I wasn't happy with the direction I was taking it, so I went back and changed a few things to kind of help me feel better about it. Books always held comfort in them for you, feeling the pages turn and reading the words on them was always something that was welcome. But today what was not welcome, however, were some of the quotes that were printed on the outside cover of some books.

You knew the saying of ��Don’t judge a book by its cover”, a quote which you recently learned was originally “You can’t judge a book by its binding”, but sometimes the quotes and covers on the outsides of books made it hard to pick up a book without feeling judgement toward it when you were at work.

There were over 800 books that sat on the carts at the end of your shift, 800 books that someone could stumble upon the next day and pick up to read, and yet there they were, just sitting there waiting to be put back. It had already been a long day, you had been at work since noon, and then, at 8 p.m. you were about to head out and head home, only to repeat the day tomorrow when you also worked at noon.

But tomorrow could’ve been a busy day; you never knew when more people than normal would come in. You had the regulars who would come in everyday or sometimes on specific days of the week, but there were always people who’d come in you had never seen before; those were the people who you wanted to make sure you’d help them find what they needed as maybe they could be overwhelmed by the vast choices in the library.

Maybe that’s what motivated you to re-stock all the books after hours, the thought of maybe being able to help someone who came in and, since you always had to look at each book you put away, you’d know exactly where to find a book that that person was looking for.

You knew that wasn’t 100% the case though, as much as you enjoyed helping people who came into the library, the actual reason was that the library was all you had now-a-day, and all you were going to do when you got home was start the cycle of your day all over again.

Every few books that you put away, you’d read a quote on them that bothered you, the ones specifically saying things about excitement within the pages of the book they were on. You weren’t sure why, usually those were the quotes that would draw you to a book, but you couldn’t find the care you needed to write down the book title and author to read it later like you usually do.

You knew that at some point in the future, there was a good chance you’d have to re-shelf that book again, but today wasn’t a day where you wanted to start a new book, even if it did sound interesting, so you hoped that you’d come across the interesting sounding books in the near future.

Maybe it had been a week since you had lost interest in reading new things. A month maybe? It had been a long time, and you weren’t sure when it had started, but the feeling persisted. Normally, you’d be able to read a decent sized book every 2 days, a long list of them you had made while re-shelving waiting for you to pick up after you finished the one you were currently on. There was a lot of down time between helping people find books within the shelves, so you often spent your time reading something but you had been stuck on the same book for at least a week, its bookmark having not moved since the day you started it.

It was a persistent feeling, one that was terribly annoying as well, and one you wished would go away soon. But this wasn’t the first time you had felt like this, as this happened quite often actually. You had wondered what caused this feeling, what took your motivation away to do what you loved, but the thoughts that came to you about why you felt this way were less than pleasant.

They often circled back around on themselves, the thoughts focusing on how mundane everything was, how unhappy you were with what you were doing. The thoughts were as persistent and annoying as the feeling of no motivation and unhappiness, and as they stuck in your head, they often found their way to thinking about death.

It was horrible to think about death, you knew it, but sometimes your brain would find its own way there, it lingering on what you could do instead of doing the same thing over and over. You knew this wasn’t what you wanted, death or remaining in the same boring cycle, but still the cycle of horrible feelings continued, the months drawing on with no change in your routine and the horrible feeling coming and going with unpredictability.

When you had left at 3 a.m., all the books had been placed back in their homes, every single one now waiting for someone new to pick it up possibly the next day. You weren’t happy, but you were content with yourself, having wanted to quit shelving books when midnight came around, but still you persisted, wanting to change the day up a little to see what would happen.

Your thoughts still remained the same however, the circle of unhappiness and death still finding their way into your mind where they had been simmering the entire time you put books away and then as you walked home.

It was exhausting staying up so late, your body and mind exhausted from the events of the day. Nothing new had happened on your shift, and even though you stayed late to try to shake things up, you had just continued to do your same job for an extra 7 hours.

It was infuriating, knowing that nothing had changed even when you tried to make change happen, you sighing at the idea that this was going to be your routine forever as you walked your way home, the path you took being the same that you had taken every day since you started at the library.

You hoped that tomorrow would something different, the morning jobs already done ahead of schedule. There would be plenty of free time to do anything when you walked in tomorrow, a thought that gave you no hope in something new happening the next day as that free time only meant more time for you to sit and stare at the book you hadn’t touched in a week, the thoughts and feelings in your head halting you from opening it.

But, unbeknownst to you, the world wanted to take you seriously for once, your need for change something that the world felt like it could help with as it hadn’t taken you too seriously before because it never really needed to. You were only just one person amongst the rest, someone who you considered to be less than extraordinary, and yet, the world decided to grant you this one small wish for change this one time, it feeling like you were ready for the shakeup. But why in the hell was the change a completely new and bizarre looking creature staring you down just a short way from your home right now? Was the world really a world of sick humor and terrible games it wanted people to play? Apparently, it was and so as you froze in place in the middle of the alleyway, you wished you could forfeit your ticket to play whatever game you were in now.

Hesitantly flicking your eyes from the monster’s persistent eyes to different parts of its body, you slowly pieced together what you were looking at. At first you could only see its eyes staring, the darkness of night and the never lit up alley way had made it hard to see more. But as you stood frozen and in a stare down with the beast, your pupils grew and more of the monster became visible.

It was massive, probably the height of one of those enhanced trucks that speed down the road on their extra tall wheels, but length wise it was hard to see as its head lay on the ground while it stared and it’s body rounded off above it so that you were unable to see down the alley at all. You assumed it was pretty long but considering that the alley went on for quite a ways down, you were unsure just how long it could be.

But all it was doing was staring, no blinking, no moving, just…watching. And as you returned the gaze back to it, you could only hear your heart beat in your ears, your blood pressure higher than it’s probably ever been before and clouding any chance you had at catching someone before they snuck up on you. Which was absolutely the worst thought right now, but you’d definitely rather take on an alleyway thief than whatever it was you were staring at right now.

It was impossible to see any colour on the beast either, as the darkness wasn’t allowing your eyes the ability to see that detail. But once your eyes were able to see more detail, you noticed something odd sitting in the front of its mouth: a little foot sticking out.

Covering your mouth quickly, you couldn’t help but feel a small chuckle leave you at the sight. Reminding you of a cat that forgot it had its tongue out, you did your best to not laugh out more the more you stared at the creature. Maybe it was because you were so scared and disgusted, but as you failed to keep yourself from chuckling, you just let yourself laugh out loud.

It was as you were laughing that the creature retracted the foot into its mouth and gave you a new look, probably one of confusion as you couldn’t really tell from its lack of eyebrows. And as your laughing died down, you slowly wiped away a small tear in your eye as you looked over the monster again, with only a single thought coming to mind as you got another good look at it.

“Tsu…Tsuchinoko?”

“How DARE you! I’ll eat you for dessert for such disrespect!!”

“Fuck.”

It had been a long time since you had to run, probably since gym class your last year of high school when they wanted everyone to run a mile in under 10 minutes, but it was just as terrible feeling as you remembered. And as you threw your arm out to grab the pole on the corner to help you turn as you bolted out of the alley, you cursed yourself and your dumb knowledge of random cryptids. You swore that after today you would no longer read the random folklore books you found at work sometimes.

You knew the monster was behind you, you could hear it smash through the alley as it came after you, but you had already stared at the thing long enough, so there was no way you were going to turn around to look at it.

Rounding around the corner of the corner market, you began to follow your path to work for some reason, probably defaulting to it by habit. Running over the bridge where you saw no other people, you glanced over the guard rail lining the sides, momentarily wondering if the fat snake monster could swim.

Hearing a loud hiss from behind you, you threw your gaze forward again to watch the path you were on, deciding now wasn’t the time to find out if you could out swim a snake while in a deep river.

Throwing yourself over the railing of the bridge to gain more distance in front of the beast, you yelped as your bag caught on the decorative edge of the railing and slammed your back into the bridge.

Panic beginning to rise to levels you’ve never felt before, you threw your torso forward and slid yourself free from your bag, and as you took off again, you felt a bit sad at the idea of losing all your things. But when you looked back to where your bag hung and you saw the monster sliding over the railing toward you, that feeling quickly disappeared completely.

Thinking about where you could go, the thought of running to the other bridge that crosses the river and then trying to run back to the alleyway to go home to hide came to mind. Cursing loudly when you realized your keys were still in your bag, you tried to think of another place to go. Work? You’d definitely lose your job if you brought in a snake monster right now as it definitely not be gentle on the books. The police station? What the hell could they do, there was a 10 foot tall snake hot on your trail and they’re barely able to stop petty thieves on most days.

While deep in your thoughts, you began to feel the pain coursing through your body at all the running and jump you were doing, and cursing yourself for being lazy and never exercising, you tried to steady your breathe as you continued on, adrenaline probably the only thing keeping you going at this point.

It was as you entered the river side park did you finally enter an area full of lights, and as you landed on pavement that ran parallel to the water, you threw your head back to look at the very persistent creature.

Illuminated by the park lights, you saw the monster for all it’s glory, and it was absolutely putrid looking, with its dark brown coloration and it apparently being covered in moss behind its fat center.

Glancing for only a moment, you returned your eyes back to the park in front of you, quickly catching site of a person walking on the path toward you.

“Hey!!” you called out to the person, “Watch out, there’s a monster!!” Seeing the person unflinching at your warning, you continued on past them, your eyes falling to the side for only a second to catch sight and meet their bright blue eyes as your body moved passed them. Gulping as you kept going on the path, you considered covering your ears as you worried what was going to happen to the person

But only a few meters down from where that person was did you hear a noise you weren’t expecting, and at the sound metal sliding against metal, you tried to turn yourself around quickly to see what was happening behind you. As your head turned ahead of your body, you watched as the person who you passed slid a sword easily through the large snake monster’s face, stopping the beast in its tracks.

Stopping in place with your eyes wide and your breath continuing to come out quickly, you slowly slid your hand over to your other arm to grab some skin and pull, thinking about how you might be in a nightmare right now and it’d really be great if you could wake up. But feeling the pain from yourself, you knew this was reality.

The snake and the person stood still, supposedly in a stand off against the other. It was amazing that the snake was still alive with a sword sitting inside it’s face, but anything was possible at this point, hell, the thing could even be immortal, and you’d believe it at this point. Another terrible thought to have, but your mind was racing right now at what was happening. Pulling yourself to reality at the sound of hissing, you felt yourself step back a little from fear.

“Spaaaaaaaardaaaaaaaa…” you heard come from the snake in a low growl. Unsure of what exactly the creature was saying, you returned your foot back forward again, hoping to hear more of what may be said. Watching as a free hand from the stranger began to raise behind them, you watched as they held up one finger at you, causing you pause your movement.

“Just give me one second here.” The stranger said, their voice almost cheerful as they spoke. Completely confused, you complied and kept yourself in place.

It was only a moment later that the stranger moved, their sword being pulled freed from the monster and being thrown through its face again, this time horizontally. The snake monster hissed louder at the sudden assault, with its being retracting at the pain and its body pulling in on itself and its skin rolling as it shrunk in on itself.

“Oh man, you’re quite round, aren’t you?” The stranger said as they placed their sword over their shoulder. “And you’re bleeding quite a bit too! The park workers are going to have to clean all this up now.”

Glancing at the ground where the snake once was, you noticed the pavement was covered in a green liquid, assumingly blood. Trying to think of any animal that you’ve read about that could have green blood, you shook your head to bring yourself back to what was happening. And as your eyes went back to the back of the stranger, you heard the snake begin to move.

Expecting it to charge toward the stranger, you stumbled back a bit, surprised when the chunky creature took a sharp turn into the river, its body quickly being submerged in the water and disappearing completely. Seeing the bubbles slowly disperse within a couple of seconds, you kept your eyes on the spot where you last saw the beast.

“What a pain…” you heard suddenly from the direction of the stranger. Turning to face the person, you watched as they rubbed the back of their neck just before returning their sword to their sheath.

As the person turned around to face you, you looked over their full body under the park light. They were wearing a long red leather coat, something that looked way to heavy to be wearing this time of year, and they had white hair, something you found odd for the fact they looked not too much older than you. But when your eyes met their piercing eyes again, you froze as they stared you down. Trying to sputter out literally any words, the man interrupted you.

“What’d you do to piss off that thing?” he asked as he walked over to you. Stopping right in front of you, he glanced to the side and toward the area where the monster entered the water.

“I, uh…” you said finally after a few moments of silence. “I called it…tsuchinoko.”

“…What the hell is that?” The man asked, his eyebrow raised as he turned back to you.

“It’s uh…a really fat snake in Japanese folklore that likes to lie and drink too much.” You admitted, feeling embarrassed at having to explain the insult that landed you in this mess. Hearing a laugh rip out of the man’s throat, you couldn’t help but chuckle a bit.

“That’s amazing!” the man said between laughs, his hand resting on his chest as he continued to laugh. “No wonder it was so mad!”

“Yeah, it chased me down from over the river.” You said as you turned and pointed to the bridge you had crossed a bit ago. “I’m surprised it didn’t catch me, I’m not exactly the most fit person…”

“It must have been too fat to catch ya.” Responded the man as his laughs slowly died down. “Wish it hadn’t run away into the water, I was hoping to finish it here.” He said as he turned to face the river again.

Following his gaze to the water, you slowly stepped forward a bit, pausing suddenly as fear hit you at the idea of the monster being anywhere in the water. Hopping back 3 steps, you tried to relax yourself, your hand on your chest to try to help you breathe slower.

“You scared?” the man asked watching you jump back. Nodding at him, you kept your gaze on the river. “If it comes back, I’ll make sure to kill it. Where do you live?” he asked as he glanced at you from the corner of his eye.

“Over the river, not too far away from here.” You answered as you pointed at some faintly lit buildings just over the river. “It was sitting in an alleyway I walk through when I go home. Not exactly what I was expecting today to happen.”

“I bet.” The man chuckled. Watching as he motioned you to follow him with his hand, you paused for a moment before following him as he walked toward the bridge.

Reaching the remains of your bag near the start of the bridge, you gathered all that was left of the bag and what was inside, scooping everything into your arms and holding it all close. Relieved that everything you owned looked to be in okay shape, minus a bit of dirt on everything, you ran up the bridge to follow behind the man again.

Finally, having got your breathing under control after some walking, you raised your hand up to your neck to check your heart rate as you walked, slightly surprised it hadn’t given out from how fast it was going earlier.

After you finished counting, you looked up to the tall man in front of you, your eyes focusing on his hair and then the sword upon his back. Your mind wandered off slowly as you felt like you knew who this man was with how distinct his looks were.

“Which way now?” the man asked as he stepped off the bridge. Pointing to the alleyway that was visible from where you both stood, the man began to walk toward it, you hesitating for a second before you jogged up in front of him, you clutching your things to your chest a bit tighter.

“That… thing had a….er, it was eating…someone… in the alley when I found it,” you sputtered out to the man as he stopped at the sight of you halting right in front of him. “I’m not sure what else could be down there…”

“Oh, you didn’t mention that before,” he replied, his eyebrow raising a bit. “Don’t worry, I’m not squeamish or anything.” As the man laughed a bit, he placed his hand on your shoulder, squeezing it lightly as he stepped around you and began to walk toward the alley. You gulped, not terribly worried about how squeamish the man was, but more so worried about yourself and how you didn’t really want to see the ‘leftovers’ the snake creature left behind. Even with worry filling you, and a lump sitting in your stomach, you followed the man again.

The red coated man stopped just before the alley with his back pressed against the wall nearby, you stopping just a few feet behind him as he did this, and as he leaned his head into the alleyway to peer down it, you wondered how anything that may be in the alley could not see him and his bright head of hair.

“It’s clear.” You heard from the person before you, him slowly making his way into the alley and you stepping quickly to catch up to him, not wanting to be alone for any amount of time. “Where is it you live again? You pass down here every day?” the man asked, his head glancing back at you as he spoke.

“It’s those apartments just ahead, you can see the entrance there,” You replied as you pointed forward to your apartment. Lowering your hand, you continued “And I do. I’d have to go all the way around the block to the next street if this wasn’t here. It saves a bit of time. But now that extra time doesn’t seem so great after…what I saw.” As you finished speaking, you watched as the man in front of you began to slow down to a stop, the sight of blood splattered on the wall now easier to see as you both neared it.

“So, this is where you saw big and ugly?” Nodding your head and humming a confirmation at the man, you brought your hand up to your nose, holding it closed as you quickly passed around the halted man, trying your best to not look at the blood. Even with your best efforts, the sides of your sight allowed you to see a bit of the wall, it being covered high up and practically painted completely in a splash of bright blood. You felt your stomach flip at the minimal sight, you gulping to try to help the feeling.

You didn’t stop moving until you were out of alley, you halting just as you stepped out just before you turned around, your hand slowly releasing your nose and allowing you to breathe normally again. The stranger was no longer looking at the horrid sight, instead he was just a few paces behind you, his eyes watching you as you waited in place for him. When he got closer to you, you gulped, quickly flicking your eyes to the spot of blood before looking back to the man.

“Should…I call someone about that?” you asked, your voice low so only the approaching person could see.

“I’ll take care of it,” he replied, a small smile on his face. “You should head inside. That’s your apartment, yeah?” as the man pointed to your apartment, you turned and looked at your home for a second, before turning back and nodding at him.

“Yeah, but…aren’t they going to want to talk to a witness…?” you asked softly, a bit confused as to how this man was going to handle this situation.

“Like I said, I’ve got this!” replied the man, his hand resting lightly on your shoulder before it pressed down to turn you around, his other hand joining after you turned around as to motion you toward your apartment. You complied with the movement, your head reeling with a thousand questions, one especially pertaining to who this man was, what he was even doing out this late at night, and why he seemed so vaguely familiar to you.

As you walked to your door, your mind began to go through all the regulars you saw at work, knowing very well that he wasn’t one of them, but you talked to so many people every day that it was possible he had come into the library before, even just one time. Having no recognition of ever seeing someone so young with such white hair, you thought about someone you were talking with earlier in the week who came into work asking to see your boss to make a delivery.

You had called your boss up over the phone, telling the person who was in front of you that he would be right out. You began to make small talk with them, them telling you things about their job, and you hearing quite a few odd things that had happened to them on previous deliveries they had made in the past.

And that’s when you remembered one crazy delivery story they told you about in the short time you talked with them, it not being the first time you had heard the story from a delivery person who came into to deliver something to your boss.

“Oh, I know!!” you said suddenly, causing the man behind you to jump in surprise as you halted yourself just before your apartment door. “You’re the pizza customer I hear about sometimes! The one who never pays and runs a shady business!” Turning from your front door and facing the man, the description you had been given by at least 3 delivery drivers matched as the man had such distinct hair and such a unique wardrobe, features that each of the delivery drivers were very specific about when they described him to you.

“…Er, I guess?” The man responded, his face contorting a bit which told you he was very confused.

“Sorry, my boss orders delivery a lot, so I talk to a lot of the delivery drivers in the area. I remember a few telling me about you.” You said, face slightly red at having to explain. Hearing a chuckle from the man, you smiled a little and reached for your keys. “But the shady business part explains why you fought that fat snake and what you’re going to do once I go inside though. So, I won’t ask too many questions then.”

“Sounds good to me.” The stranger said as he gave you a thumbs up.

“Well, maybe just one…” you said, watching as the man rolled his eyes. “What…WAS that thing? It wasn’t a regular snake I’m assuming?” you asked, shuffling through your keys for your front door key.

“Well, it was…” the man said before he paused, his hand coming up to rub his chin lightly. “Listen, if you see it again, just call me.” He said finally after some seconds of silence and pulling a small card out of his front pocket.

Taking and looking at the card, the only things on there were a phone number and an address that wasn’t very far away. Nodding and putting the card in your pocket, you placed your key into the lock and unlocked your door.

“Understood.” You said as you pulled open the door slowly and grinned. “Thanks for walking me home, shady business pizza guy!”

“Dante. My name’s Dante, not…that.” Dante said, sighing a little at the nickname, a cocked smile on his face. Chuckling a little, you introduced yourself before you stepped into your place, waving at him for a second before closing the door and making sure to lock the doorknob lock and place the dead bolt in its place.

Feeling the card inside your pocket, you slowly turned yourself around and walked all the way inside, mind racing at what all had just happened. Pulling the card out slowly and feeling it in your hand, you glanced down at it as you placed all your things down inside the kitchen, feeling a bit better knowing that that card was going to be staying on your person for a long time.

He’s the Florida man who police describe as a person of interest in the disappearance of his girlfriend, Gabby Petito, with whom he was filming a cross-country YouTube series called “Van Life.” Police in North Port, Florida, where Laundrie and Petito lived with his family, are spearheading the investigation and, with the news that Laundrie also has vanished, they’ve launched a massive search effort to find him – and Petito. In the days before Laundrie disappeared – Petito’s family attorney told CNN he’s “hiding,” not missing – police ramped up the public attention on his refusal to speak with them about where she was. Chief Todd Garrison tweeted at Laundrie and his lawyer, “@NPPDPoliceChief Mr. Steven Bertolino, esq. the @NorthPortPolice needs your help in finding Gabby Petito. Please call us to arrange a conversation with Brian Laundrie. Two people left on a trip and one person returned! #wheresgabby #FindGabby #fbitampa #gabbypetito.” But then he too was gone. That news came after police say Laundrie’s family decided to speak with them in detail. Petito, 22, of Blue Point, New York, is described by New York authorities as a “white female, approximately 5 feet 5 inches tall and 110 pounds. She has blonde hair and blue eyes, and several tattoos, including one on her finger and one on her forearm that reads ‘let it be.’ The van she was traveling in has been recovered.” Blue Point is located on Long Island. At the fall of darkness on September 18, 2021, police called off their search for the day, finding nothing.

Police Are Searching for Laundrie in Carlton Reserve

As of September 18, 2021, North Port police were conducting a massive search for Laundrie in Carlton Reserve. That’s a 24,565-acre preserve located in Sarasota County, Florida. “The North Port Police Department, FBI, and agency partners are currently conducting a search of the vast Carlton Reserve for Brian Laundrie. His family says they believe he entered the area earlier this week. More details when available,” North Port police wrote on Twitter. Police revealed in a statement that the attorney for Laundrie’s family called the FBI on Friday night (September 17) and indicated the family wanted to “talk about the disappearance of their son.” The family “now claims that they have not seen Brian since Tuesday of this week,” police wrote. He was “last seen wearing a hiking bag with a waist strap.” Police said they are frustrated because, for six days, they pleaded with the family to contact investigators regarding Petito. “Friday is the first time they have spoken with investigators in detail. It is important to note that while Brian is a person of interest in Gabby’s disappearance, he is not wanted for a crime. We are not currently working a crime investigation. We are now working a multiple missing person investigation.”

We have no information that a crime occurred here in North Port. We are pleading with anyone, including Brian, to share information with us on her whereabouts in the past few weeks. The lack of information from Brian is hindering this investigation. Authorities told News Channel 8 that K9s are using bags of Laundrie’s clothing to help with the search for him. About 50 officers from various departments are involved, according to the television station. “We’re hopeful that he’s out here,” North Port Police Spokesman Josh Taylor said to News Channel 8. “Certainly, we prepare for all different possibilities, but you know, our goal is to locate him and bring him back to North Port.” Police told CNN that Laundrie’s vehicle is back at his home but might have been at the reserve at one point. North Port police revealed that, according to Petito’s family, “they were last in contact with Gabrielle during the last week of August. Prior to the last communication, Gabrielle is believed to have been in Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming. Petito and Brian were traveling in a white 2012 Ford Transit van with Florida license plate QFTG03. Gabrielle, 22, is white, approximately 5 feet 5 inches tall and 110 pounds. Petito’s Family Attorney Says He’s ‘Hiding,’ Not Missing

Richard Stafford, the attorney for the Petito family, told CNN that Laundrie is “hiding.” “All of Gabby’s family want the world to know that Brian is not missing, he is hiding. Gabby is missing,” he said, according to CNN. Before he vanished, Laundrie’s lawyer told NBC he would not speak with authorities because “intimate partners are often the first person law enforcement focuses their attention on in cases like this and the warning that ‘any statement made will be used against you’ is true, regardless of whether my client had anything to do with Ms. Petito’s disappearance.” Jim Schmidt, Petito’s stepfather, told CNN about the search for Laundrie, “We’re still trying to get the word out there and try to find that one person that might have some details that we need. Just trying to get out there and find that person and hopefully they can help us with anything that will bring her home.”

Rocky Shocky Dracos - May 2018 Banlist

Banlist season is kind of savage when you think about it; everyone’s out for blood, and they turn to tournament results for donors.

Spoiler: we didn’t get much blood, but this list was fairly solid nonetheless.

The best decks of this format were Pendulum Magicians (notable variants included the Magician FTK, which copied the effect of Lyrilusc - Independent Nightingale twice with Supreme King Dragon Starving Venom to burn for 4000 twice; and the Zexal variant, which used Chronograph Sorcerer to make Beatrice in order to dump Rank-Up-Magic Argent Chaos Force, then overlay Gaia Dragon, the Thunder Charger to add it back to hand, then discard it to turn Number 39: Utopia into Number S0: Utopic ZEXAL) and True Draco (almost entirely Demise, though the Metalfoes variant also faired well). Almost nothing else came close to these decks, though the format was fairly diverse apart from that: 60-card variants, Dinosaur variants, 60-card Dinosaur variants (wow!!), SPYRAL, Burning Abyss, Zefra, Metalfoes, Mekk-Knight Invoked, and sometimes ABC and Trickstar all made significant tournament placements during the format, and for a while, it seemed like everyone was happy.

Of course, that’s ignoring the two legal FTKs. In addition to the above Pendulum FTK, Gem-Knights got a Link Monster last set, and as a result, generated some easy combos to burn 8000 on turn 1 by making Lady Lapis Lazuli and copying her effect with Gem-Knight Master Diamond. If you interrupt it, they end on True King of All Calamities instead, for an equally interactive experience.

Oh, and Draco was pretty uninteractive as well. You could spend your entire turn building the biggest board of monsters ever conceived by man, but any board without backrow could more or less be outed with good old Rocky Shocky (Amano-Iwato + Raigeki), down to the point where it was the default answer to any “break my board” post on Zodiac Duelist. Once they got in, or if they went first, they spiced up the experience by flipping two or three of the exact same floodgates every single time, so you’d have to deal with outing a Master Peace on top of obscenely powerful backrow. Oh, and Amano-Iwato also prevents the activation of handtraps (except for Infinite Impermanence), so you can’t do anything about them drawing cards!!

Mind you, this is on top of an already GOOD archetype. Imagine telling someone playing 2016 Monarchs that they made an archetype where all of the continuous spells were Eidos and drew cards, and all of the traps were Escalation, and one of them was also Monster Reborn, and all of the monsters went plus if your opponent tried to play the game, and every time you Tribute Summoned, you also destroyed stuff, and the field spell was BETTER than Domain, and...

But that’s over now, right? Did they finally do Draco dirty this time? We’ll see.

Forbidden

Astrograph Sorcerer

Astro, Astro. It’s funny how long it took for this card to become good: it wasn’t played at all until Electrumite came out, but I guess that makes sense, since Electrumite is the reason this card had to go straight from 3 to 0. Let’s get into why this card in particular is so ridiculous, and why it was obviously the best hit.

Astrograph Sorcerer does three important things.

You can destroy it in scale to summon Stargazer Magician from the deck or hand. This makes half of Electrumite without a Pendulum or Normal Summon.

If a monster is destroyed, you can summon Astrograph from hand to search another copy of any monster that was destroyed this turn. This isn’t even once per turn, and can activate even if Astrograph wasn’t in hand when it happened.

Astrograph is level 7, so you can overlay him for Odd-Eyes Absolute Dragon, which can float into Odd-Eyes Meteorburst Dragon or Odd-Eyes Vortex Dragon when it leaves the field; this comprises about 1/3 of the ending board of any Pendulum deck.

Best part is that putting it to 1 doesn’t stop you from being able to loop it at all! You can resolve it multiple times per turn with just one copy thanks to Electrumite’s effect.

Yeah, this was a great hit.

Master Peace, the True Dracoslaying King

Yep, this is Luster Pendulum. He’s now Zoodiac Drident crossed with Apoqliphort Towers, and naturally he’s on the banlist again. Feel old yet?

To continue on that analogy, I fully expect this deck to go the way of Qliphorts and continue to see play as a stun variant. Note that nerfed Draco is still a better deck than Qliphorts, unfortunately.

Phoenixian Cluster Amaryllis

Woohoo, we won’t get Plant FTK! With that, I have the feeling we’ll be getting the Aromage Link Monster next set, since that’s the card that enables this FTK. Once again, a good hit.

Supreme King Dragon Starving Venom

Magicians lost two cards, it turns out. Did I mention when you copy Independent Nightingale with this, it becomes unaffected by card effects? And it’s a 3000 beater with piercing? And you don’t even have to use Polymerization?

There were people making the case for Nightingale being banned instead of this, but I’d like to make the argument that copy effects limit design space even more than random Level 1 birds that can burn do.

I actually think the FTK more or less dies with Astrograph, but this helps to make that certain.

Ancient Fairy Dragon

Remember how everyone laughed at that Fairytale archetype and then, on the same day, an FTK was discovered off of the field spell?

Remember how ABC-Dragon Buster is a 1.5 card combo off of any Field Spell?

Remember Fieldspell.dek, which ends on UCT + Mechaba or Naturia Beast with no trouble whatsoever?

Yeah, you can thank this card for all of that. There are people that think Ancient Fairy is innocent, but this card is absolutely the culprit. I bought a copy not too long ago, but I’m glad I’ll be putting her into the “banned cards” page of my binder, hopefully never to see the light of day again.

Rank-Up-Magic Argent Chaos Force

And here’s the first case where I feel like they picked the card to hit at random, as Konami used to do. The Zexal combo required a bunch of cards to exist within the game:

It seems like Konami spun a wheel for this one, since I can’t imagine Utopic ZEXAL coming up in any non-degenerate strategies, and it certainly prevents them from printing any searchable non-Quick-Play Rank-Up-Magics, but who cares, buy Links!

That Grass Looks Greener

I’ve been a 60-card player since around this time last year, and Lightsworn is my favorite deck of all time, so I’m sad to see this one go, but it was absolutely responsible for 60-card decks’ most unfair hands. “Oh, you decided to drop Ash Blossom on my Lonefire? Here, let me just mill a third of my deck real quick and end on Naturia Beast or Void Ogre Dragon with Fairy Tail - Snow and Shiranui Spiritmaster in the GY. Oh, and you only have three cards in hand. Sorry, not sorry!”

Limited Cards

Dinomight Knight, the True Dracofighter

This is the best card in Draco that isn’t named Master Peace, and is the sole reason for why I think the deck isn’t totally dead. Return and Apocalypse are still absurdly strong cards going first and this card searches them.

Gem-Knight Master Diamond

Here’s another “spin the wheel” hit; the Gem-Knight that actually burns is Lady Lapis Lazuli, but hitting this hurts the deck’s attempts to play legitimately, too. Problem solved, I guess, but at what cost?

They can’t make Calamities anymore, either, but that matters much less when they can’t actually kill you, either.

Chain Strike

And there’s a strange hit! Chain Burn has been a nuisance since, well, the release of Chain Strike, and this hit is kind of out of nowhere, but who cares. Chain Burn is dead if you don’t draw an insane hand. Better now than never.

I’m doing these out of order so I can sort them into tiers depending on how much discussion they actually deserve. Without further ado:

Neo-Spacian Grand Mole

Fairy Tail - Luna saw no play and Solemn Strike is still at 3. Who cares.

Grandsoil the Elemental Lord

The functional errata is effective already, though we won’t get it in print until FLOD: SE. Elementsaber buff, though the deck really isn’t good anyways.

Mathematician

This is still a solid card, honestly. I could see it seeing play again in decks that don’t need a Normal Summon, or if they finally unban Construct. I don’t think that deck’s in the game right now, but it could be soon.

Atlantean Dragoons

Dragoons was tearing through boards years before SPYRAL Tough was, and honestly, there’s very little stopping it from doing so now with Light of Sekka in the game (Abyss-scale is a brick and chances are that you don’t run any spells that do anything more impactful than drawing two cards and fixing your hand). This is kind of like when Charge of the Light Brigade came back to 3: It’s a fairly solid buff to a fairly solid deck. Add onto that the imminent reprint of Moulinglacia and the new Mermail Link Monster, and the deck is looking like it’s soon to be in a very strong place.

Ignis Heat, the True Dracowarrior

This means virtually nothing compared to Dinomight coming back to 1.

...

Okay, hear me out. Ignis was the deck’s best play going second since it grabs Heritage, which plusses off of disruption. That’s fine, but:

Amano-Iwato stops your opponent from doing anything to stop you already.

You are going to search your spells with Diagram anyways, and you don’t need your opponent to be using effects on your turn to do that.

Heritage is still a disruptable card itself, and the proper play with Ignis is usually to let him hit the board and swing over him later in order to give the opponent Heritage on a turn when they can’t immediately use it.

For these reasons... yeah, Ignis doesn’t actually matter that much. Draco would still be fine with Ignis at 1, and I don’t really expect that he’ll be run at more than 2 at MOST due to the way optimal ratios work with Card of Demise.

END OF LIST

And that’s it. So what happened here?

Magicians nerfed. FTK and Zexal builds murdered. Pure deck is still viable.

Every other pendulum deck nerfed, though pure Metalfoes arguably lost the least. (Zefra didn’t use Astrograph at all, but really needed AFD.)

Draco nerfed. Still viable, mark my words.

60-card is dead outright. The best playmakers are still there, but Left Arm into Grass is no longer valid backup for Lonefire Blossom. You may see 40-card Dino or Zombiesworn lists in the future given good enough hands, but there’s no good way to fit the Lonefire combo in 40 cards without bricking too often.

Gem-Knight FTK dead.

Plant FTK pre-emptively dead.

Chain Burn, for some reason, also dead.

Every deck that plays Destrudo into AFD is nerfed or dead. I expect ABC and Zefra to survive through sheer power, though both lost much in consistency.

Invoked are fine, though invoked hybrids lost AFD, I guess.

World Chalice untouched. If you think you’re good at this game, try this deck and realize how wrong you are.

SPYRAL untouched. Easily a top-tier contender.

Burning Abyss untouched. Still a solid deck with proper backrow.

Paleozoics untouched, though the worst part of their worst matchup is totally gone, and they’re very solid versus Altergeist. Budget players, keep an eye on this deck.

Mermails buffed. Remember to respect this deck, since anyone who’s still got it has probably been holding onto the cards for years (especially if they have Moulinglacia, that shit went straight up to $40 a pop).

Neo-Spacians tier 1, obviously.

EXTRA: Cards that Did Not Get Hit, Somehow

Card of Demise

Normal Amano-Iwato, set 3, activate Diagram, Demise. Your opponent looks you straight in the eye as if you could respond, but he knows the truth. In the pursuit of victory, he lost whatever part of his heart that was capable of compassion. Even now, there’s no saving him.

This card provides way too much advantage in the right decks and has deserved a hit for like four or five lists in a row now. I’ll be happy to see it gone, but Konami seems to think not. Maybe LC Kaiba still needs to sell?

Trickstar ANYTHING

This deck has fallen off a bit, but Drollcarnation is still legal and the deck is still a threat based off of that alone.

Scapegoat

Free 1-card Borreload if your deck doesn’t SS on the opponent’s turn! That’s fair, right? Kill me.

some april notes as the month is getting closer to the end:

i have read 2 full graded readers (butterfly lovers pleco reader, chinese short stories ebook). i’ve read also part of the 500 word Sinolingua book (and looked through the vocab index and know every word in it). And part of Journey to the Center of the Earth Mandarin Companion (I should finish it today as I know all the words in it ToT its one of those cases where its so simple its almost boring).

i watched through the about 2 hour japanese Dracula Musical - no subtitles, and the first time i’ve ever braved either japanese nonstop that long OR japanese audio with zero subtitles in any language to rely on. i feel really ;-; accomplished compared to what i’ve done before aha

i watched 20 minutes of a japanese Persona 2 Innocent Sin last night (japanese subs). i do actually think with lets plays combined with subs and my chinese hanzi recognition, i could pick up some new words if i just did it More Often. Anyway this is just notable since the Dracula Musical made me brave enough TO try this with a game i have no context for lol.

i watched 25 episodes of a show in chinese this month (Two Souls in One). Depending on when it ends i might have watched 30 by the end of the month, since its about to finish.

i’ve read a bit over 20 chinese chapters this month - i probably won’t get where i wanted with hanshe, but i’m doing a good amount and that’s what matters. i got distracted with graded readers (which i do think are helping me).

i studied about 350 common words in the nukemarine memrise course this deck, along with the grammar and kanji i already had done. i’m hoping i’ll get this number up a bit more before my japanese games come in ToT (my ideal would be at 1000 words but... i’m trying to be realistic and my motivation just is NOT there to cram that many right now probably). Still, 350 in a month is pretty good progress!

just in general both chinese and japanese are doing better than expected right now. chinese has been doing how i’d like it - the show i’m watching never requires me to lookup words to follow or enjoy the plot, just some replaying scenes to catch more details sometimes. reading wise: reading these graded readers is giving me a REAL sense of accomplishment - seeing what was once super hard for me take only 30 minutes to read, seeing a book full of unknown words now be full of words i completely know, seeing myself speed read over a book that i used to have to slowly glance through and re-read to grasp. i HAVE made progress in the year since i last tried to read these and it shows. i am super excited to see what reading the little prince will be like since i have memories of struggling through it before (and when i watched the youtube video reading recently it i realized i knew all the words in those videos). also - i am reading Guardian right now. I am reading my print novel of Guardian! that’s been a goal since i started! And as of now it IS something I can do right now, no dictionary (as long as i’ve read the english translation at some point prior). The reason i’m not doing it more right now is my reading speed for it is SO slow. So hopefully a bit more practice will speed it up. I’m seeing now with graded readers how much my reading of THEM has sped up, so there’s hope.

I also read a info page for the bilingual Dracula today and it mentioned a 26-29 hour reading time and that makes me feel a lot less bad about my reading speed? Last time I calculated how long it would take me to read hanshe at my current speed (roughly 15 minutes per chapter), 55 chapters left was going to take me 26 hours to read. Now... unfortunately the chinese novels i read tend to be 100-150 chapter long beasts. But - to see that a french/english book of about 800 pages would take me about as long makes me feel like i’m not reading so slow as it feels. i think i am reading chinese slower than english, but not dramatically slower. I need to actually MEASURE my reading speed sometime soon. But I’m pretty sure its like ‘slow speaking speed’ to ‘normal speaking speed.’ it unfortunately is not faster than speaking speed, but i do think for the most part its usually at least that fast.

January Reads

Where did January go? I’m not being funny, but Christmas seems like it was 2 minutes ago, and now its February. I think its probably due to the fact that I didn’t actually come back to Uni until the middle of January and then I had two weeks of exams. The less said about those the better - I’m glad they’re over! I have some nice things planned for the next few weeks as well, so yeah, hopefully February will be a good one.

My other exciting news is that I’ve got a job for the Summer at a summer camp in New York state, which I am so excited about. I’ll be working as a camp counsellor, but also playing the piano in the theatre department. 7 weeks of playing showtunes, is basically a dream job for me, and I cannot wait! Although I don’t agree with certain events and situations currently happening over in the USA, hopefully I’ll still have a great summer!

Still, there’s a whole Semester of Uni to go before that, and for us Chem Eng students, that means a shit ton of maths and horrific lab reports, but I digress. I am actually really enjoying my course, don’t let some of my comments make you believe otherwise!

Anyway, back to point of the post - what I read this month. In January I read 2 books. Not the most I’ve ever read, but I did have exams, and one of them was a pretty long book. My thoughts will be under the cut, and a full spoiler warning applies as always. Enjoy!

1) Living Shadows by Cornelia Funke

I read the first book in this series over the summer, and fell in love with it. So when I got the beautiful new editions for Christmas, it couldn��t be long before I picked up book 2, which I also really enjoyed.

I think these books sit in a really strange place. By that I mean that they’re set in this fairytale world, and so bits read like a fairytale or a children’s book, but holy shit some of the stuff in here is not for little kids. Also, all the main characters are in their 20s. This means that I really like these books now, but I don’t think I would have enjoyed them in the same way if I’d read them when I was like 11, and I read most of Cornelia Funke’s other books.

I liked the plot of this book, in that it was more of a treasure hunt than book 1, which was basically about saving Will. I’d just like to add that Jacob’s self-sacrificing actions would have made Dean Winchester proud. This time Jacob was trying to save himself, by finding this crossbow, and I really liked the hunt part, where they were unravelling all the clues. I also liked that it became a race against time against Nerron, and the part where he and Jacob were swapping stories, sort of showing that they were more similar than they liked to think.

I think it dealt with some of the fallout of book 1 quite well, but I would have liked to have seen more from Kami’en and the Dark Fairy, as well as Will and Clara, although I know why they couldn’t really be in it. Still, I think some interesting things have been set up for future books, like the Alderelves and the mirrors, and look forward to reading more in this world when book 3 comes out in paperback - I want my copies to match!

2) Brisingr by Christopher Paolini

So, I did a slightly silly thing and went into the Inheritance Cycle tag on tumblr when I’d only read 2 and a bit books in a completed series. I was just curious to see how much stuff there would be in the tag, and wound up being spoiled for a couple of plot points in the last 2 books. I’m not going to lie, I was quite happy about some of the things I learned, but it did make a couple of moments in this book lose a bit of their impact because I knew what was coming. That’s completely my own fault though.

I mentioned when I finished Eldest how much I am loving this series and wondering why I didn’t read it sooner, and that still holds, although I thought this book had quite a lot of filler in it. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still really good, and some important things happened that needed to happen - the truth about Eragon’s father, forging his sword, finding out about the Eldunari, but there was also a lot of small battles and missions, and generally escalating the war, which was good, but sort of filler-y. I think its probably something to do with the fact that this was originally going to be the final book, but there ended up being a 4th book, so there was more time for things to build up, but then there wasn’t a really big spectacular battle at the end of this book like Farthen Due or the Burning Plains. I remember having similar thoughts about the 3rd book in the Unwind series, which is also a trilogy with 4 books in it.

Eragon himself is such a pure cinnamon roll of character - like he still doesn’t quite know how he found himself in the middle of this adventure, and he doesn’t really want to fight and kill anyone, but he’s willing to do whatever it takes to save the world, and I just really like him ok. Nasuada is amazing, I love her too, and I feel so sorry for Murtagh and Thorn. I saw a post saying that Murtagh is basically the Bucky Barnes of this series, and that is so true.

I also really like the magic system in this series and how the nature of it is explained and thought out, like how its linked to energy and life and stuff. And I’m always up for dragons. I’m really excited to find out how this series is going to end, although I’m going to take a little break and read some slightly smaller, lighter books first, because Inheritance is an absolute beast of 800+ pages. At least its on kindle so I don’t have to carry it round with me!

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week’s theme is the top ten books from my favorite genre. Because there aren’t any pride-themed topics this month – which is quite the oversight – I’m picking my top ten favorite LGBTQIA+ fiction books!

On Saturday I did a roundup of ALL the LGBTQIA+ books I’ve reviewed on this blog so far, but I’m going to narrow it down to my favorite ten today!

In a rough order but not an exact one:

The Merry Spinster is a collection of short fantasy stories that explore gender in interesting ways, by transgender author Mallory Ortberg. It’s a pretty trippy collection and quite fun.

The Spy with the Red Balloon is the sequel to The Girl with the Red Balloon, but I don’t think you really need to read the first one to understand the second. The plots are pretty separate. In Spy there is a demisexual character and a gay character, and it’s a lovely magical-realism exploration of World War II. (Girl explores living in East Berlin, behind the wall, after the war, and has a time-travel element. Both books are fantastic and written by a demisexual Jewish author.)

River of Teeth and Taste of Marrow are two novellas exploring an alternate history United States in which hippos were imported to the Mississippi and used like cattle. Wranglers ride hippos, it’s great. One of the main characters is non-binary, and has a romance with another character. The author is non-binary as well.

Starless, by Jacqueline Carey, is a sprawling, epic fantasy that covers a princess and her nonbinary bodyguard as they embark on an epic quest to save their world. (And possibly fall in love with each other on the way.)

The Summer of Jordi Perez (and the Best Burger in Los Angeles) is a great summer read. It’s bright and sunny and follows a teenager as she tries to determine who has the best burgers in LA while falling in love with another girl. This is also the only contemporary fiction book on the list – I mostly read fantasy, as you can tell!

The next four are all at about the same level of I LOVE THEM.

Once & Future is queer King Arthur in space. It encompasses a bunch of different identities and it’s an amazing take on King Arthur and it’s just wonderful. I cannot wait for the sequel.

Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom, by Leigh Bardugo, have a pair of gay characters in the troupe of thieves, and it’s an epic heist novel followed by a revenge & rescue novel. I really need to read the rest of the Grisha-verse, because I LOVED these two.

The Wrong Stars and its sequel, The Dreaming Stars, are a pair of sci-fi novels starring an incredibly diverse spaceship crew (the captain is a bisexual demisexual!) trying to save the world from a massive alien threat. It’s a space opera with nonbinary, trans, and ace characters, as well as the bi and demi captain.

It has dragons and politics and action and big battles and assassins and magic and it’s just amazing. I will keep boosting this book because I love it so much.

When I was a kid, I loved monsters. I dressed up as a monster or an alien (i.e., stealth monster) every Halloween. I watched monsters movies on weekends and tokusatsu shows or whatever featured monsters after school. I loved kaiju and the monsters on Sesame Street and The Muppet Show. I sat in the aisles of both my school and my city’s libraries, staring at pictures of monsters in books. I devoured books on mythology, mostly because of the monsters. (There’s nothing like Jason of Jason and the Argonauts to make you side with monsters). I would make towns out of my toys and rampage, laying waste to entire municipalities. I say all this not to establish my monstrous bona fides, but to provide some context. My Favorite Thing Is Monsters, Vol. 1 (Fantagraphics, 2017) feels eerily parallel to my own life, though I did not grow up in 1960s Chicago, like both artist/writer Emil Ferris and her protagonist, Karen Reyes. But I feel the book’s mix of horror movies and comics, mythology, private detectives and painting. Chicago was just across the lake and I spent a lot of time with my mom at the Art Institute of Chicago. On Saturdays, I would watch Creature Features like Emily Ferris and My Favorite Thing Is Monsters‘ protagonist, Karen. And I would have loved to be a monster.

In My Favorite Thing is Monsters, Emil Ferris creates the notebook of 10-year-old Karen Reyes using what appear to be the school supplies that would be available to Karen at the time. Ferris also renders Karen’s recreations of paintings at the Art Institute of Chicago and the covers of horror magazines Karen likes. (I would read any of the magazines). My Favorite Thing Is Monsters is burly book, and I am only on the first volume. Together the two volumes come to something like 800 pages.* And it is a masterpiece. When I first came on to the Gutter, I wrote about how I was interested in the parallels of fine and disreputable art. My Favorite Thing Is Monsters hits their overlap on a Venn diagram just right. Great art inspires art in response. It’s part of how you know it’s great. That and there is always more to say about it. There are a million things that could be written about My Favorite Thing Is Monsters. And when they were written and you picked up the book again and read it one more time, there would probably be a million more.

My Favorite Thing Is Monsters reminds me a lot of Lynda Barry’s work. Barry’s art is much looser and she tends not to vary her style depending on the content. Ferris style is generally tighter and more meticulous. Her range goes from very cartoony depictions to recreations of paintings that have caught Karen’s attention–in the style she has created for Karen. But Ferris reminds me of Barry in other respects. As in Barry’s Marlys comics, Ferris focuses on a school-aged girl in the 1960s. And both are willing to show the ugliness and the beauty in their characters’ lives. Though we mostly see Karen’s life outside of school. My Favorite Thing Is Monsters reminds me of Barry in its density of art and text, particularly with Barry’s memoir/creativity teaching guide/graphic novel, What It Is (2008). Ferris is not afraid to fill a page with text if it serves the story. And she is willing to mix in the pain of childhood. She remembers what it’s like to be 10-years-old.

On spiral bound, blue-lined ruled and using ballpoint pen, felt tip marker, what looks like number 2 / HB graphite and hard-leaded colored pencils, Karen Reyes records her story and the stories around her. She loves monsters and drawing and she draws herself as a werewolf girl who is not completely transformed. She lives in a basement apartment with her mom and her older brother, Deeze. In Karen’s notebook, Countess Alucard tells Karen that she is braver than the countess because, at a sleepover, Karen dared kiss Missy’s hand when Missy was asleep.

There are a lot of problems in Karen’s life. The newest is the death of her upstairs neighbor, Anka Silverberg. Anka might have been murdered. Karen, wearing a trenchcoat and fedora, decides to investigate—looking for clues in paintings, exploring the cemetery and interviewing a specter and recordings of Anka recounting her life. Karen swipes the cassettes from Anka’s husband Joseph. But what starts out as one mystery that seems solvable proliferate into so many more.

Her friend Sandy appears and disappears like a ghost. She sees neighbor Sam “Hotstep”** Silverberg looks much like Boris Karloff as Imhotep in The Mummy (1932). They are both tormented by the loss of their beloved. But Anka Silverberg, the woman who dies in the beginning of the book, is more protean. Sometimes Anka seems like a ghost or a zombie. But other times she is Medusa or an Egyptian queen. Like Karen, Anka used stories to make sense of her own life. Instead of horror movies and comics, Anka used mythology to understand her life in Weimar Berlin, in Nazi Germany and, later, in Chicago.

I appreciate how compassionate the book is for one that goes into so many dark basements of life and history. It could easily become nihilistic, and Karen is briefly tempted by St. Christopher the Werewolf to give in to an impulse to destroy everything she loves because it could not protect her from the awful parts of being alive. In a dream she kills all the monsters, but realizes it is a terrible mistake. Because the monsters in her life are good. It’s the humans in the story who are “monsters.” And we call them that to try to distance any human capacity to do terrible things from human beings. We do it to feel safer and less implicated.

But if there’s anything the last two hundred years or so of history have taught me, it’s that Dracula has nothing on human beings when we go bad. I think that’s why monsters have become ever more sympathetic, despite the unhappiness of horror fans who want them to stay scary. In My Favorite Thing Is Monsters, Karen sees and hears about human beings who are capable of so much worse than Dracula or the Wolf-Man. She lives through the assassinations of John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King. She sees the smoke from Chicago’s West Side as it burns down after King’s assassination. And she listens to Anka’s story of growing up in a brothel in Berlin and being shipped to a concentration camp. Karen is afraid her brother will be drafted to fight in Vietnam. And she is angry that no one will talk to her about any of this.

It is easy to try to separate everything into good or bad and choose a side. But things are complicated and people are complex. And the stories that save us sometimes justify doing terrible things. There are the monsters who can’t help what they are or how they look. They are all hair and teeth or sewn together corpses and galvinism. And there are the monsters who choose to be cruel, to try to control the world and tell us the worst stories about ourselves. I make this same differentiation between monsters and “monsters” not only because I love monsters and have always hated to call awful human beings with their name. It allows people the space to be more complex than simply good or bad. The same person can do wonderful and terrible things–sometimes at the simultaneously. It is a human conceit that if somehow we can identify the monsters, we can drive them out or slay them and then live happily ever after. But these are usually the most dangerous stories, the ones that lead to genocide. Humans are not as straightforward as monsters. Dracula drinks blood to survive. Werewolves bite because they are cursed. Frankenstein*** was created and then neglected. Frankenstein can’t help what he is, what his mad scientist father made him, but after reading a lot, he can choose what he does. It is his fault that he murders, but it isn’t his fault that he doesn’t have the emotional maturity to make good choice. Like Karen, I’m with the werewolves.

Welcome to my new feature, LiteraItaly!

I say it’s a feature, but really this is just a way for me to track my progress with some books on my TBR that I’m not exactly in a rush to cross off, but that I’d certainly like to cross off at some point.

If you didn’t know, in 2015 I went to Italy for the first time when my friend Elena and I visited Rome and fell head over heels in love with the country. The following year I was lucky enough to go to Florence and Bologna, and Florence is now without a doubt my favourite European city.

I love Italy’s history, its people, its food (oh my god the food) and all that stunning architecture, and yet I realised I haven’t actually read a lot of books set in Italy and/or written by Italian authors. That’s something I’d like to change.

Below are some books either set in Italy or written by an Italian author, as well as two fantasy books whose settings are inspired by Italy. All of these are books I own (aside from one fantasy book which isn’t out yet, but I have every intention of getting my hands on once it’s released) and they’re all books I’m very excited to read.

The Birth of Venus, Sacred Hearts and In the Company of the Courtesan by Sarah Dunant: Given how much I love my historical fiction and how much I love Italy, Sarah Dunant is an author I should have read by now. My copy of The Birth of Venus is very special to me because I bought it from the Uffizi Gallery’s gift shop after seeing the actual Birth of Venus painting while I was in Florence. I’ve since picked up a copy of In the Company of the Courtesan from a charity shop and Sacred Hearts on my kindle, but I still haven’t read any of them. Oops!

The Black Prince of Florence: The Life of Alessandro de’ Medici by Catherine Fletcher: After visiting the palace the Medici family built for themselves in Florence, I couldn’t help wanting to know more and more about one of Italy’s most scandalous families. The Borgias are one thing, but the Medici basically had Italy in their pocket.

The Land Where Lemons Grow: The Story of Italy and its Citrus Fruit by Helen Attlee: I don’t know why, but I love lemon groves. I don’t think I’ve ever even been to one, but all those trees with all that yellow I just love and I really like the idea of learning the history of Italy through its citrus fruit.

The Merchant of Prato: Daily Life in a Medieval Italian City by Iris Origo: I hadn’t heard of this book until I came across it in a bookshop in Glastonbury and I couldn’t bring myself to leave without it.

The Tale of Tales by Giambattista Basile: I’ve actually started this one – and seen the incredibly bizarre film inspired by it – but haven’t finished it yet, and I’d like to. There’s some severe racism in here and I get the impression the author hated women given how horribly he writes about them, but these are essentially some of the first Italian fairy tales and, as a lover of fairy tales, I’m interested in that aspect of it.

Italian Folktales by Italo Calvino: Yet more Italian tales! This book’s quite a beast – my edition is around 800 pages – so I think I may have to make my way through it very slowly, reading a tale or two a day.

The Prince by Niccolò Machiavelli: The Prince is essentially a political treatise, but I’ve heard there’s still a lot we can learn from it even now and I’m intrigued! I picked up my edition of this book in Bologna, so it has sentimental value, too.

The Brilliant Death by Amy Rose Capetta: Italian inspired fantasy and an LGBT+ romance. This book could not be more on brand for me if it tried unless it had a unicorn in it. I can’t wait for this one to be released!

The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch: I’ve actually started this one just this week and its Venetian-inspired setting is clear already. I’m hoping to love this one!

Lavinia by Ursula Le Guin: I still haven’t read any Ursula Le Guin (the shame) and it’s only recently I discovered she’d written a kind of retelling of an Ancient Roman myth, so I bought a copy immediately and I’m looking forward to reading it.

A Day of Fire: A Novel of Pompeii by Stephanie Dray, Ben Kane, E. Knight, Sophie Perinot, Kate Quinn and Vicky Alvear Shecter: I’ve been low-key obsessed with Pompeii since I was a little girl and I learned about the eruption of Vesuvius. This novel is essentially six stories following various different people caught up in Pompeii on that fateful day and one of these days I’m going to get to it.

The Enchantress of Florence by Salman Rushdie: I’ve been interesed in Salman Rushdie’s work ever since I read and loved Haroun and the Sea of Stories, and yet I still haven’t read anything else by him. This is another novel I snapped up while I was in Florence and I’m very intrigued by it.

The Book of Human Skin by Michelle Lovric: My friend Elena read and loved this one, but she’s also warned me that the main character is essentially an Italian Ramsay Bolton. This novel sounds incredibly dark but fantastic, and I can’t wait to get to it – it might be a good novel to read close to Halloween, actually…

Florence in Ecstasy by Jessie Chaffee: As soon as I saw that cover I knew I needed a copy of this novel, but I’m ashamed to say I still haven’t read it.

The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco: In the realms of historical fiction, this book is a classic, and as someone who enjoys historical crime I feel as though this is a book I definitely should have read by now. I haven’t been reading as much historical fiction this year, but I’d still like to get to this one.

My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante: Sadly the covers of these books are hideous, but I’ve heard wonderful things about Elena Ferrante and I want to see what I think of this series myself – especially as I believe there’s a TV adaptation in the works!

LeSean McCoy, Buffalo Bills vs. New York Jets ($8,200 DK, $8,500 FD)

McCaffrey is going to have a huge impact on the Panthers and on DFS this season. With Cam Newton easing back into form off shoulder surgery, I think McCaffrey drives the bus this weekend against a defense that was atrocious against the run last season. Ryan Schimpf, 2B/3B, Padres (ADP: 262): He had a .316 ISO, which is insane. For context note that Babe Ruth’s career ISO was .342. Schimpf’s K percentage is also nuts at 31.8 percent. But he walks (12.7 percent). Add a flyball rate about three times the league average and you have to write off batting average without a doubt. But a possible 40 homers at 2B is definitely a path to winning a league. I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t break camp in the everyday lineup and if I’m wrong, who cares since this price is free.

Aaron Nola, SP, Phillies (ADP: 143): Love the Ks and BBs. He says he’s healthy. Innings will be an issue but we’ll worry about that in August. Homers weren’t even a problem last year. His ERA in 2016 thus makes zero sense. Bet on positive regression.

Ivan Nova, SP, Pirates (ADP: 233): Looked like a fantasy ace last year in Pittsburgh, which has been a haven for pitchers. I can’t ignore 52 Ks and 3 BBs because the weight of that small sample is so great. Note the K rate is not going to help you but he has such a sweet WHIP floor given those walks.

Eugenio Suarez, 3B, Reds (ADP: 254): More cheap power. I’ll be surprised if homers don’t significantly regress this year, league wide. But 25 homers are a reasonable projection for Suarez in his age 25 season, too. His K/BB profile suggests a .260 average is well within reach.

Tom Murphy, C, Rockies (ADP: 242): Could be the Trevor Story of catchers this season in Colorado. Hit 24 homers in 347 at bats last year in AA and MLB combined. Also added 28 doubles and seven triples. Yes, he’s a gamble in that he may not have a job. But you’re being paid to gamble given this ADP.
