Hi! I love ALL YOUR AUs and the massive musically-named Guck fam. Not sure if there's any particular AUs you want to write so maybe dealer's choice for any of the following? 9 - Chocolate, 11 - Heartbeat (Babies! or Vampires?), 16 - Daybreak, 20 - Wishing, 32 - Underneath.
16. Daybreak
Aw, thank you! I asked my roommate if they had any thoughts about what AU to choose, and they listed a couple. When they mentioned the variation of the MerGucket AU called French Fish Girl, I immediately had an idea for the daybreak prompt. So thatâs what I went with. Hopefully you like it!
For context, this takes place after the first scene in this ficlet and immediately before this ficlet. Also, the song Angie sings is âAu clair de la luneâ, which was the first result when I googled âtraditional French songsâ. I liked the lyrics, so I went with it.
Prompt List

Stan sat on the edge of his bed, staring numbly into the dark of the shelter he and Ford had cobbled together, tryingdesperately to ignore Fordâs snoring. After a few minutes, he got up with a sigh.
Might as well take a walk onthe beach or something.  That might tireme out enough to fall back asleep. Not bothering to put on his shirt, Stan exited the shelter and headedfor the beach.  Heâd been dealing withsleep problems for the last couple days; waking up in the middle of the nightand struggling to fall back asleep.  Probablyâcause I feel guilty over giving Angie the boot.  Sadness swelled inside him as he rememberedAngieâs expression when he told her not to come back.  Stan kicked at a rock, frustrated.
âAu clair de la lune.â  Stan froze. He looked up.  Sitting on the beach, her legs pulled against her chest, waves lapping at her feet, was Angie.  âOn n'y voit qu'un peu.â  She was singing something Stan had neverheard before.  Every syllable hit Stanâsears with the clarity and beauty of water from a mountain stream.  âOn chercha la plume-â
âAngie,â Stan croaked.  Angie looked over.  Her blue eyes shone faintly in the darkness, one of the many animalistic traits she kept even in her legged form.
âStan!â  Angie jumped to her feet and rushed tohim.  Stan embraced her in a tight hug.  âI was wondering if Iâd ever get through toyou,â she whispered into his chest.
âGet through to me?â Stanasked.  Angie broke off the hug.
âYes.  This is my third night of trying to summonyou.â
âSummon me?â  Stan frowned at her.  âAre you the reason I keep waking up atnight?â  Angie nodded.  âUh, two questions.  How and why?â
âSirens can summon humans withsong,â Angie said.  âIâm not as good at itas my older sister, but I didnât expect Iâd have as much trouble as I did withyou.â  She grinned crookedly.  âI mean, Iâve been sitting on the beachsinging at you for three nights now.  Itwould take a will of steel to resist a sirenâs call for that long.â
âOr just a dumbass with a thickhead,â Stan mumbled, thinking back to each time heâd awoken in the night andbeen struck with the urge to go to the beach, only to ignore it.  Angie stroked his cheek.  âThatâs the how.  Why were you trying to summon me?  I told you, I canât leave Ford.â
âI know.  Come.â Angie took Stanâs hand and led him to where she had been sitting when hefirst arrived.  She settled herself ontothe sand.  Stan sat down as well.
âAngie, no matter how much youtry to sweet talk me into becoming a merman, itâs not gonna work.  All youâre doing is making this harder onboth of us,â Stan said quietly.  Angielooked straight ahead at the horizon, where the sun was beginning to rise.  Everything was cast in the warm, blue lightof dawn.
âI donât get to see sunriseoften,â she said softly.
âNeither do most humans.  Usually, people sleep through it.â
âWell, merfolk arenât strictly diurnalor nocturnal; we wake up when we feel like it and sleep when weâre tired.  But fishermen set off at dawn, so itâs notwise to go on land then.â  Angiecontinued to stare ahead.  Stan watchedher silently.  Feeble morning rays hit herface, illuminating the pink and yellow freckles scattered across her cheeks.  Her caramel-colored hair was completely dry.  Stanâs stomach churned.
How long has she been on land, waiting for me?  He looked at therising sun.  I hate this.  I hate being stuck between her and Ford.  Why didnât Ford listen to me about Bill?  If he had, none of this would havehappened.  We wouldnât be stuck on adeserted island, I wouldnât be turning down a gorgeous mermaid, and Angiewouldnât hate Fordâs guts.  Angiepulled her legs to her chest and rested her chin on her knees.
âI didnât know any songs inEnglish, so Iâve been singing French songs to try to get to you come to me,â Angiesaid softly.  âYou came during the lastverse of the last one I knew.â
âYeah, uh, why do you knowFrench?â Stan asked.  Angiegrimaced.  âIâm not gonna like the answer,am I?â
âI studied abroad a while ago, inthe Mediterranean.  Specifically, thepart that lies within French territory.â
âWhat- what were you studying?âStan asked.  Angie closed her eyes.
âIâve told you before thatmerfolk and humans donât have a very good history.â
âIf by that you mean that merfolksometimes eat humans, yeah, you have told me that,â Stan said.  Angie was silent.  Stan scooted away from her.  âYou- youâve eaten humans?â hewhispered.
âNo!  No. But I haveâŚâ  Angie played withher hair.  âI have killed them.â
       âSweet Moses.â
âThatâs what I studied abroadfor.  I wanted to learn other methodsthat merfolk have for sinking ships.  Butthe merfolk off the French coast speakâŚâ Angie muttered something under her breath.  âI donât know how to say it in French, letalone English.  But itâs a language thatâssort of a mixture of French and Mermish. Theyâd use that language, theyâd use Mermish, theyâd use French, and theywouldnât bother translating things for me.â Angie rolled her eyes.  âFrenchmerfolk are notoriously snooty.â
âFrench humans have thatreputation, too.â  Stan paused.  âSo youâre a murderer, huh?â
âTo be fair, Iâve never sunkships as recreation,â Angie said.  âOnlyas part of my job to protect the colony. Merfolk donât really go out of their way to sink ship after ship aftership.  It draws unwanted attention to whereour colonies are.  Thatâs why the Bermudacolony had to be abandoned.â
âHang on, you mean the BermudaTriangle is real?â Stan asked.  Angieshook her head.
âNot anymore.â  Angie sighed. She looked at Stan.  âIâm tellingyou this because, if you become mer, youâll have to come to grips with it.  Youâd be abandoning your species for someone whohas killed humans before.â
âI mean, some humans kindadeserve it,â Stan mumbled.  Angie manageda small smile.  âBut I keep telling you,I canât become mer.  It would mean leavingFord behind.  I canât do that.â
âIt doesnât need to mean leavingyour brother,â Angie said quietly.
âI thought your colony didnâtwant him, since he tried to kill you.â
âMy colony doesnât want him,no.  But you do.  I spoke to some people, looked through theancient laws.  Thereâs a loophole thatFord could use to join the colony.â
       âReally?  What is it?â
âIt- it involves him beingsponsored.  But it wonât work if you holdoff on becoming mer.â
âWhat do you mean?â Stan asked.  The sky was growing brighter now, the sunâsrays stronger and less timid.
âIn order to start the series ofevents necessary for Ford to use the loophole and become mer, youâd need tobecome mer first.â  Angie met Stanâseyes.  âYouâd have to leave Ford.  Right now.â
       âWh- I canât say goodbye?â
âHe canât know about this planyet.  Not until we set everything up.â
âThis sounds pretty sketchy,âStan said.  Angie nodded.
âI know it does.  And I know that you donât have any reason totrust me, but-â
âHey.â  Stan put his hand on her shoulder.  âThatâs not true.  I trust you, Angie.â
âAfter everything Iâve told you?âshe asked.  âThe ship sinking and-â
âI trust you,â Stan repeated.  Angie smiled. âIâll do it.  Iâll eat the flowerand become mer.  But only because youpromised that you can help Ford become mer, too.â  Angie nodded. âIâll be right back.â
ââÂ
Stan ducked into the shelter and grabbedthe magical flower that had been resting on the stump next to his bed.  It looked as pristine as the day Angie hadgiven it to him.  He glanced at Ford, still fast asleep.
âIâm sorry, Stanford,â Stan saidquietly.  He rested his hand on Fordâsshoulder.  âYouâre gonna figure out thatI left with Angie, but itâs not what it looks like.  Iâm not abandoning you.  Iâll be back.â  Ford let out a loud snore.  Stan squeezed his shoulder.  âI promise, Iâll sneak back to keep an eye onyou.  I wonât let your terrible survivalskills keep you from living long enough to become mer.â  Stan took a breath.  âGoodbye.â
Stan trudged through the sand towhere Angie stood, still watching the sun. Daybreak was almost over.  Once hewas by her side, Angie looked at him with a smile.
âAre you ready?â she asked.  Stan nodded.
       âLeft my pants behind andeverything.â
       âGood.  You wonât need them.â
âSo, uh, what- what do I do?âStan asked.
âEat the flower.â  Angie watched Stan pop the flower into hismouth, chew, and swallow.  It had analmost fruity taste, fizzing as it touched his tongue.
       âWhat now?â
âWe wait,â Angie said softly.  She leaned against him, resting her head onhis shoulder.  They watched the sun climbhigher and higher.  Stanâs eyelids grewheavy.  Exhaustion washed over him.  âAny minute now.â  The moment the sun had pulled free from thehorizon, Stan closed his eyes.
       Everything faded to black.

When we received the copy, there was no context at all, just the slogan and this sentence: Is it possible to have a few words translated into Spanish by Monday?,â followed by a request that we also translate the word small.
To support my argument, I will present several examples of the current media environments and personal experience, particularly in relation to music and music industries since music is one of the important mass cultural forms, representing current trends of peoples' mind and thinking. Without his work in the 1950s and '60s, there would be no field of study that sought to explain how the nuances and great sweeps of human history are made possible by media of communicationâhow media determine the thoughts and actions of people and society, in a softâ way. We know about it because we were at least, up to the coming of the Social Networks, reading books, listen to all types of different genre and good music and that has kept us as a "Sane Society' in this day and age. Then, tickled by curiosity, he read it and at the same time compared it with the previous translations. So long as Man Mind has existed, from the crude forms of mass mobilization to contemporary Meida technological mind control, it has always been the desire and aim of those who are rich, and have time to fine-tune and fine-chissel their distorted and concocted strategy of mass control to set and determine the final outcome, social arrangements and reality. Mutant X [TV] (2001-2004)
S01E21 âDancing on the Razorâ
[spoilers]
Sci-fi/action
Tom McCamus plays a main role in season 1
The penultimate episode [of season one]. No prizes for guessing why I consider the end of season one the end of the show. The title may or may not be a quote of Iron Maiden lyrics. Or may be me drawing parallels where none exist. Which really is the backbone of English Literature. Oh how proud my English teacher would have been. Or perhaps not. He was not at all impressed when I read out a novelised X Files episode in class.
Brennan and Jesse wander round one of the many abandoned warehouses that are invariably chosen as meeting spots. I think I might be wary of being asked to go to such a location if I was a scared and vulnerable New Mutant. The GSA show up and fight the guys one or two at a time, Kung Fu style. The New Mutant they were supposed to meet doesnât show, but someone has installed cameras in the warehouse and is watching them.
Proxy Blue reports that she has an informant who has video footage of the fight. Am I the only one who is disappointed the internet no longer looks all shiny and bevelled? My first website was. Back in the day when people had websites.
The guys of Mutant X decide that they wonât be able to trace the email from the person who set them up. Despite all of them allegedly being great computer hackers. Adam says they finally have something in common with Genomex. Other than him being an ex-employee? And their goals actually aligning pretty often? I guess weâre all guilty of saying things that sound good, but arenât necessarily true.
Mason complains to his new number two about Proxy Blue broadcasting his business on her broadband spectrum. I do love it when they toss around âtechno termsâ in an effort to sound more sci fi. Recall when we didnât all have broadband? Recall when we didnât have internet? Thereâs a scary thought. Support Net Neutrality! And with that, I think I have reached my maximum allowable number of tangents in the first five minutes of this episode.
His new number two, Harvey Lanchester (Roman Podhora) suggests that the leak came from inside Genomex. Mason refuses to believe that, despite his employees being discovered working against the company actually quite frequently. (Cut to some poor intern shaking their head and taking down the 1 above the âdays since employee defectionâ sign). Mason indicates that he has implemented some sort of method to detect thoughtcrime (1984 reference number three). Today, I believe that would be extremely easy. Let me scare you to death for a second: do you ever think anything you donât google/message to someone/say on the phone? Hereâs hoping my NSA file says something along the lines of: âMostly harmless, mind too focused on frivolous things to revolt. Mad as a spoon.â
Harvey is an interesting second in command. He replies to Mason in the same sharp and unforgiving tone as his boss uses, and seems to get away with it.
The Mutant X girls have more luck in their computer hacking than the guys. Shalimar says they tracked a caller to Proxy Blue to a company called Macklin Exporters.
Harvey is way ahead of them, and his team is pulling apart the exporting office. He demonstrates his power, which is to shoot some form of heat beam from his forehead. The exporting company looks to be, if not a front, unsuccessful. Their warehouse is completely empty and doesnât even have any racking to store things on. Macklin employee Jay (James Gallanders) is brought over to Harvey for questioning. He claims not to know anything. Shalimar and Brennan stroll in and fight off the GSA. They rescue Jay, not bothering about all his unconscious colleagues. Probably uncredited extras, and not important. Harvey sets fire to the warehouse, presumably killing all of those poor unimportant extras.
Brennan and Shalimar take Jay back to a safehouse. They start to question him but they end up telling him about what they are. And isnât the whole point of this operation to stop just that? Jay says he knows nothing except heâs only alive because he was late for work. So did the GSA kill his colleagues before setting fire to the building? And for that matter, why did he not react much to seeing his colleagues at least knocked out?
Proxy Blue reports on the âexplosionâ at the warehouse. And she even mentions that itâs not connected to the unreleased video footage from earlier. Isnât it a bit odd that she would indirectly expose her informant like that? Predictably, Mason isnât happy with how Harvey dealt it. Emma and Jesse look up Harvey in the New Mutant database and find that he has a psionic combustion power. Iâm not sure why this power is classed as psionic when it would be better classified as elemental or even molecular. But I know I canât escape the obvious explanation - and Iâm rolling my eyes as I write this - itâs because it comes from his head, isnât it? Emma thinks Proxy Blue is taunting her informants to come forward with the disc, which would make sense.
Shalimar questions Jay again. He refers to his colleagues as friends, which is inconsistent with his apparent apathy towards them. Brennan gets a call from Adam, who pushes him to get information from Jay. He asks for his coworkersâ names but he does not know them, despite just calling them his friends. He tells them to look in his apartment, and that there is a list of the other employees on his refrigerator. Iâm sorry, but is it normal to keep that sort of thing on your refrigerator?
Brennan goes to Jayâs apartment, but once again the GSA is there before them. However the whole scene is stolen by Man Carrying Dog in an Elevator.
Meanwhile Shalimar seems to be having fun mothering the man they think is involved in (badly) attempting to expose them. She tells him about how this exposĂŠ will affect their lives, while making a good show of drinking from a cup, which is clearly shown as empty from the angle they chose to film.
Brennan and Harvey face off. Their fight is interrupted before it starts by the unsung hero of this episode. Oh yes itâs Man Carrying Dog in an Elevator! Thereâs another man involved this time, and they pass the dog between them. At times I am a Supporting Artiste (the most pretentious and best job title) and honestly I think they think itâs hilarious to make us do the most stupid and bizarre things. Where is the logic behind the dog being carried twice? Part of me loves the abject falseness of film and TV but the other part of me thinks the people who make it need a bit of real life experience to realise how silly theyâre being. Politicians should also be forced to go on my Grim Reality course. Insider info: the dog was probably owned and brought along by one of the men.
Shalimar and Jay get very flirty and plan to go on a date. But he tries to kiss her and she pulls away. Probably for the best, seeing how her last two relationships ended.
Jesse discovers that the company looks legit so the spying must have come from a single person. And as the rest of the workers are dead, the only way for the story to go anywhere is if Jay was the culprit. Wow, Shalimar sure does know how to pick em!
Brennan drops by to the safehouse and tells them the GSA got to Jayâs apartment before him. Jay tries to call the police but they stop him. Suddenly he mentions his sister. Now if he isnât the culprit, he at least has something wrong with him that gives him a lack of empathy and a poor memory. Shalimar goes with him to find his sister.
Proxy Blue has nothing to report, and is now saying it may have been a false alarm. Harvey thinks he has done enough to diffuse the situation, but Mason insists he finds Jay. I noticed something about one of the panels in Masonâs office, the one that is X shaped. It looks like a Western Blot, which will mean nothing to the non-scientists in the room. Neither will this: I miss the smell of agar in the morning.
Emma looks for Jayâs sister but canât find her in the database. There is no mention of her being a New Mutant, so this suggests something very sinister: does Adam have a database on everyone in the country?
Predictably, Jay tricks Shalimar and locks her in his apartment. She escapes, but not before he disappears. Harvey finds her and uses her power to try to torture her into telling him where Jay is. Emma sneaks in and uses her extra power of illusion to trick Harvey and the other GS Agents into thinking she is Mason and does a remarkable job of persuading them to leave Shalimar alone without giving away what she is doing.
Jesse finds some info on Jay. Which means Adamâs database must include regular humans as well as New Mutants. So he must have stolen this from another government agency. Which is a rather odd thing for someone supposedly supporting freedom and liberty to do. Jay is apparently a journalist. Surprise surprise. Jesse makes an offhand comment about him packing computer chips. Is this actually one of the USâs exports? But anyway he was fired from a job as a journalist.
Proxy Blue reports that the âexplosionâ was an accident. Mason video calls Harvey to congratulate him, and he is confused because he just saw him. Masonâs reaction to this is quite hilarious. And they are both still none the wiser.
Adam tells Shalimar that Jay lied about having a sister and is also the one who set them up. The girls want to go after him, but Adam isnât keen. They go after him anyway. And I have to say I love the yellow and lime green lighting in the warehouse. Itâs not realistic in the slightest but cool anyway. Jay plans to give the disc to Proxy Blue but the girls ambush him. Shalimar grabs the disc and hits him. But he grabs Emma and holds a gun to her. Emma has clearly learnt to use her powers even in stressful situations, and she makes him think the gun is too hot to hold.
Shalimar gives him a beating and they are about to leave victorious but the GSA arrive and ruin it. Interesting thing about Harveyâs powers: why is it that when he hits things it sets them on fire, but on people he just makes them painfully hot? Emma redirects one of his heat blasts and hits him with it. So sheâs also a telekinetic now? And why does it appear to be deadly/severely disabling on him when other people seem to be merely in pain from it?
Adam grabs the disc and they are about to leave when Mason shows up with the most GS Agents weâve seen all together. They have the most tropey standoff. Then decide to destroy the disc and set fire to the warehouse.
Later, Brennan sort of admits he has feelings for Shalimar. Emma and Shalimar complain about their bad luck with men. I mean, sure, they are young people, but in the circumstances dating is probably not a great idea. They are looking through a rail of Emmaâs clothes and Shalimar makes fun of them. And nobody really thought this through because Emma is always seen to be ultra fashionable (for the time).

Intro - June, 2013 [Translated]
Here is a great RAM-era interview I found on Issuu.com! Thereâs discussion about the guest musicians, real instruments vs electronic equipment, the lyrics, why new music takes them so long, and the RAM marketing campaign. Fair warning that I do not speak German, and this was done via Google Translate and WordReference.com, so itâs loosely translated at best, but it is nice readable English.
âONLY THE MUSICâ Intro Magazine, June 2013
Eight years ago, Daft Punk released their last studio album Human After All. Now, Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo are back: Random Access Memories, their most elaborate work, is completely without outside samples and is based on a cross-generational guest list. Together with Giorgio Moroder, Nile Rodgers, Pharrell Williams, and six other guest musicians, they explore a spectrum of sounds ranging from West Coast Pop to disco, to contemporary house and R&B.
The Random Access Memories project was subject to extreme secrecy. Following a strict schedule set by the two Frenchmen, it was revealed to the public little by little via advertising clips on Saturday Night Live and at the Coachella Festival. Sebastian Ingenhoff and Thomas Venker speak exclusively with Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo about the albumâs different production methods, the slow work pace, the guest musicians, and the long-awaited lyrics.
Daft Punk, why did you choose the title Random Access Memories? Thomas Bangalter: It is about the interrelationship between computer memory and human memory, which is more and more being replaced by digital technologies. Technological progress plays an important role nowadays, it is being integrated into everyday life more and more and so has a real impact on human behavior. We have always been interested in futuristic ideas, as you can tell from the robot personas we assume on stage. Robot figures, which shift between artificial intelligence and human behavior, are a recurring theme in science fiction.
On your album, however, you did not use computer technology. The tracks were done with analog equipment and guest musicians. So you are âhuman after allâ! Thomas: Thatâs true, but itâs still the same music. You can achieve precise craftsmanship in an analogous way and also have a certain robotic quality. It works on a different level than artificial intelligence. The human aspect of electronic music has always interested us. How do you make music that is mainly produced with synthesizers and sequencers come to life? Lifeless electronic music is synonymous with bad music.
You were able to get two pioneers of dance music together as guest musicians, Giorgio Moroder and Nile Rodgers. Moroder, for example, took up techno at the start with Donna Summerâs 1977 production âI Feel Loveâ. Thomas: We wanted to represent a broad spectrum to carry the past into the future, to draw a connecting line through the decades. Not in an archival sense, but with a clear view of the future. Giorgio Moroder may be over seventy years old, but he still has something to say, and he does more contemporary work than a lot of young producers. We wanted to create something that is timeless but also contemporary.
The piece with Giorgio Moroder is a good nine minutes long. It starts with a monologue in which he first reflects on himself and his work, before handing the stage over to a meandering track that shows what freedom music can have. Did he come up with that idea himself? Thomas: We wanted to document the history of his music. Where did Giorgio come from? What kind of circumstances did he face when he invented techno? Did it come about by accident or was it due to his ideas of futuristic music? This is of course something archival, but then comes this incredible song with incredible synthesizers and a great hookline. You can immediately recognize Giorgio Moroderâs style. But also our style â at least I hope so. Â It was about the line connecting us. We want to show that todayâs dance music would not be possible without the dance music from the 1970s.
The other disco-era icon on the album is guitarist Nile Rodgers, who is still very busy â he was just on tour with Chic and in the studio with Tensnake. How was it collaborating with him? Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo: He is now over sixty years old, but insanely energetic and young at heart. It was incredible to be able to work with him. He still comes across as a child, totally enthusiastic and engaged. If you feel Nile Rodgersâ energy, then you realize that physical age says nothing about a person. He was very ill, he had cancer. When you have conquered a disease like that, you live your life more consciously and intensely. He is incredibly productive and always wants to do three things at a time. Thomas: He told us an incredibly beautiful story about the making of Chicâs âI Want Your Loveâ. Â When Nile first heard âI Feel Loveâ by Moroder and Donna Summer, he thought, âWow, this guyâs playing is super tight, this is incredibly fast and precise.â When he realized the tightness came from the sequencer, he wanted to bring that into his guitar playing. So he followed the sequencer. And this is how âI Want Your Loveâ by Chic came about! Listen to both pieces one by one and pay attention to the guitar playing. Itâs amazing. No one knew that until now. Nile is a huge fan of Giorgio Moroder. And vice versa, Giorgio is also a big Chic fan. But they never really worked together. On Random Access Memories they have finally come together. Obviously that makes us proud!
On the other hand, you recruited young producers like Gonzales, Panda Bear, and Pharrell for the album. Thomas: Exactly: âPast, present, futureâ. They are all producers we like and who have touched us somehow. Take the tracks with Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers â the most innovative R&B producer of the past decade meets the most brilliant disco guitarist in the world. The guests on the album are virtuosos in their field and were able to make a real contribution to our ideas. Neither Guy-Manuel nor I are outstanding at the piano â Gonzales, however, is certainly one of the best pianists in the world. So he was able to contribute something that we could never have done in our lives. We did not just want big names, but rather contributions that made sense.
The lyrics are about the search for love, the essence of life, the hedonistic escapism of the night â and all the abysses connected with it, the dramas and losses. Thatâs typical of disco, that the music is often very uplifting but the lyrics are contradictory. That is tradition, even so for Chic. Thomas: Dance music needs that emotional depth, that contrast of sadness and happiness. It is always easier to create something that is sad or happy. But to combine both in a song, that is art. Guy-Manuel: Thatâs the great thing: you can be incredibly happy and be crying at the same time. Ideally when youâre dancing, you feel like a volcanic eruption, bubbling over in all directions. Itâs not just black and white, but many shades between. Our albums have always tried to represent a broad spectrum of feelings. There are very dark tracks from us, but you can still play them in a club because they might have an uplifting bass line or a nice melody.
This year is your anniversary: 20 years of Daft Punk. Yet you have announced you will not be performing live this year. Why? Guy-Manuel: There is no need to rush. We have completely invested the past few years in the record, now we want to enjoy the anniversary. Thomas: We want people to focus on the album and not on us standing on stage. It should be something special with a very particular value â after all, it was a very ambitious undertaking. Guy-Manuel: For many, a new album is just an excuse to go back on tour. Thatâs where they can make money. But we want it to have a special appreciation and not be just a flashy stage show. Thatâs why weâve said from the outset: Hereâs the record, and it stands on its own. No music videos, no tour, only the music.
You started in 1993 as young bedroom producers. Now for the new album you have worked in several big studios like Ampex in Los Angeles and Electric Lady in New York. How did that affect writing the tracks? Thomas: Was our songwriting process really different than before? We have never thought of electronic music as computer music, as something that you sort of spit out. It has always been about capturing and preserving a special moment. When we started, it was much more chaotic than it is now. We had a bunch of drum machines and a couple of good ideas we could feed into them. But we never wanted to control the equipment like a computer, rather appreciate it as a living thing. As an organism. Now we are doing the same thing with real instruments. If you do punk rock and suddenly everyone else starts doing punk rock, it would get boring at some point. Then maybe you want to compose an opera, just to see if you can bring punk rock into it. Then opera becomes the new punk rock. Guy-Manuel: Now electronic dance music has become very uniform. With the computer, anyone can put tracks together, but often they are only presets that have been strung together. Itâs not a challenge. We want to make music that is more than a few mouse clicks. We want to have emotion and soul. Just something human. Bangalter: Itâs hard to program emotion on a computer. Analog synthesizers give you a mix of different sounds, but they never sound sterile. It is much different than a computer. If you then add in elements like a Fender Rhodes and a keyboard, you can create poetry. You canât produce an album with a few mouse clicks. Obviously this is a very conservative point of view. But just imagine what would have happened if the few people who make interesting music on the computer would have used real instruments.
But Chicago house, which greatly influenced you, relied on this difference. It was a statement against submissiveness, a revolution in the sense that you no longer had to master instruments to produce music. It was about being creative with something simple like a drum machine and a sampler. Guy-Manuel: Of course, and the music always sounded very warm. Chicago House had soul and depth, something you find in few dance tracks now. Maybe because at the time they were using real synthesizers and real drum machines. It might have been produced quickly, but it was made with a lot of attention to detail. When Iâm at a club and thereâs a Robert Armani track on, I can instantly distinguish it from the mush of beats. However I cannot tell most contemporary dance tracks apart, a lot of it just sounds boring to me.
Your first album Homework was the blueprint of a somewhat more brutal sound that was cultivated a few years later by the label Ed Banger. Pedro Winter was also your manager for a while. Are you following the Parisian scene now? Thomas: Ed Banger is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year. Pedro comes from our generation, we started at the same time and have been experiencing similar advancements. We share the same interests and preferences. Itâs nice to see that theyâve found their way and that this sound lives on. Itâs hard for artists and labels to stay on the ball for years and years, because the scene changes: younger people grow up and want different sounds. If youâre still around after so long, then youâve done something right.
In twenty years youâve only released four studio albums. You take a lot of time. Thomas: We have to do it like that, because it gets increasingly more difficult to reinvent ourselves. You want to become more complex and not a caricature of yourself. Many older musicians keep making the same thing out of convenience, because they are afraid to lose their fans. But thatâs bullshit. If you donât have any challenges to face as a musician you might want to retire. We take a lot of time because we want to reach a higher level with each album. Like a video game. Thatâs why the latest album is always the most difficult for us.
As a marketing gimmick you aired two fifteen-second commercials on Saturday Night Live. What was the idea behind the campaign? Thomas: It was supposed to be very small teasers that donât give away too much but arouse curiosity. Like a good commercial. We intentionally didnât want anyone to hear any songs in full. Physical marketing through print magazines, TV stations, and billboards just has a better vibe than online marketing. It fits better for us, because we grew up with that. All of this online marketing is not very poetic. We make the tools available to people and they can do with them what they want. We donât use the internet much ourselves. Of course we shot an elaborate video that we put on YouTube, but thatâs not exactly what we wanted this time.
But at the same time you are known for your spectacular music videos. Youâve worked with major music video directors like Spike Jonze and Michel Gondry in the past. Thomas: Many say our clips were revolutionary, but the revolution was that we didnât make any. After the two fifteen-second videos came a slightly longer performance video with Nile Rodgers, Pharrell Williams, and our two robots. But itâs not a music video, itâs more like an advertisement. Â In either case itâs pretty funny. I donât think you can really surprise people with music videos anymore in the internet age. Thatâs why you have to move forward, giving yourself challenges and new formats to utilize, both on a musical and an aesthetic level. Random Access Memories is a complete piece of artwork that must first be absorbed. For me that could go on for more than a year. What comes after that? A tour? A film? Weâll see.

THE HISTORY OF DAFT PUNK Through the years with Homem-Christo and Bangalter
1974 On February 8th Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo is born in Paris.
1975 On January 3rd Thomas Bangalter is born in Paris.
1992 de Homem-Christo and Bangalter form the rock band Darlinâ with Phoenix musician Laurent Brancowitz. The British magazine Melody Maker described their demo as âa dafty punky trashâ - a historically significant phrase.
1993 Bangalter and de Homem-Christo change their sound, creating a techno house group and naming it Daft Punk.
1994 Scotsman Stuart McMillan reacts euphorically to their hand-delivered demo âThe New Waveâ and signs the two to his label Soma. As a result the three singles âThe New Wave / Assault / Waveâ, âDa Funk / Rollinâ & Scratchinââ, and âInto Silver Clubâ are released.
1995 Daft Punk move to the major record label Virgin, sending Da Funk up the charts with a bigger marketing campaign.
Thomas Bangalter forms the label RoulĂŠ.
1996 The last photo of the two in which you can see their faces is shot in May 1996.
1997 Daft Punkâs first album is released on January 17th. Homework makes them well-known outside the club scene. Among the biggest hits of the album are Da Funk, Around The World, and Revolution 909.
Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, together with Eric Chedeville, forms the label Crydamoure and the group Le Knight Club.
1998 Bangalter, together with Alan Braxe and Benjamin Diamond as Stardust, releases the hit single âMusic Sounds Better With Youâ.
Bangalter and de Homem-Christo go into the studio with Romanthony. One of the songs from this session, âOne More Timeâ, is released two years later as a single and, with more than four million copies sold, becomes the duoâs biggest hit so far.
2001 On March 9th their second album Discovery is released. In addition to Romanthony, there are guest appearances by DJ Sneak and Todd Edwards. It will go on to sell three million copies.
For music videos of Discoveryâs single releases Daft Punk use excerpts from Interstella 5555, a musical they produced with anime director Leiji Matsumoto.
2002 Thomas Bangalterâs partner, the actress Ălodie Bouchez, gives birth to their son Tarra-Jay on January 22nd.
Bangalter produces part of the soundtrack for the controversial French film Irreversible by Gaspar NoĂŠ. He also later worked on the soundtrack of its successor, Enter The Void [Note: Not really true, Thomas did help a little bit but was busy with Tron at the time; he is credited on this film as a âsound effects directorâ].
On July 8th, LCD Soundsystem releases their song âLosing My Edgeâ, in which James Murphy sings about being the first guy playing Daft Punk to the rock kids.
2005 On March 14th their third album Human After All is released. Itâs a harbinger of Daft Punkâs later period of sampleless-ness.
On February 21st LCD Soundsystem released their hit song âDaft Punk Is Playing At My Houseâ.
2009 Daft Punk produce the soundtrack of Tron: Legacy. The album is released on December 6th.
2010 On October 20th Daft Punk make a guest appearance at the Phoenix show at Madison Square Garden. They play a mix of âHarder, Better, Faster, Strongerâ, âAround The Worldâ, and â1901â.
2013 On May 17th Random Access Memories is released. For the duo it is one of the most important moments of their career, âbecause the best is always yet to come,â says Bangalter. âYou must not think retrospectively.â

[SCENARIO] How the Vocal Team will Propose (JH/JS/WZ)
A continuation of one of our earlier scenarios (How the Hip Hop Team will Propose). We will also be doing one for the performance team as well, so we hope you look forward to it!
A/N: WHOO! And that wraps the Vocal Team up! We really tried our hardest to make each of them unique in their own way, so we hope you like them!
Enjoy!
-Scooped âď¸ -junnie :> -jihooned
[JEONGHAN/JISOO/WOOZI] | [SEOKMIN/SEUNGKWAN]
SYNOPSIS
I think we all know that the Vocal Team are definitely the shyer, less expressive ones (other than Seungkwan) in the group, so we can see them turning to simpler, but sweeter ways to propose to their significant others. True to themself, their proposal methods may be really cliche but it will definitely melt any girlâs heart.
JEONGHAN
Totally totally romantic about it
May not seem like he would put in much effort
But he WILL i tell you HE WILL
No matter how long youâve dated him, he will know if you are THE ONE
Ponders night after night for a month or so
Would be calculative about it
âif i marry her will it benefit both of us?â
âShe has a lovely caring family so i wonât have such a hard timeâ
âMy mum already treats her like her daughter in lawâ
Alright why not
Im at the age anyway
Yo best friend Seungcheol and Joshua i need your help like pls mani mani help
Seungcheol: âAnything for you broâ
Joshua: âTotally bro, Iâm happy for youâ
âDino-ya whose baby are youâ
âugh must we do that hyungâ
âTsk answer meâ
âJeonghannie hyungâs babyâ
âAlright glad you know letâs get to workâ
First he will ask you out on a normal date
First will be meeting you in a posh car
âRented it just for you babeâ
âImma make you feel like the queen todayâ
Will Pay to give you a makeover and a new set of clothes
While waiting for you to finish makeover he will be slowly preparing the next part of the surprise proposal
He will rush back to the boutique and sit there for 5 mins just to tell you that you look great when you appeared
Pretending that he was there all the while
And once you go back into the makeup room/dressing room/ hairstylist etcetc
He would rush off elsewhere to prepare
Once youâre done and you look stunning
He would definitely praise you on your looks, and then tip the shop assistants for helping him keep his cover
Would bring you to a beautiful restaurant
Probably wanted to reserve the whole restaurant for you
Got into a fight with the manager of the restaurant because he wasnât allowed to reserve it all
Still goes there anyways because thatâs your favourite steak place
While ordering the food, Jeonghan would recite every single detail about the food that you would order
From no peas to more cheese
Then when youâre done with your food, he brings you out for a walk at a nearby park.
Both of you would sit at a nearby bench and talk about everything under the moon
Then Seungcheolâs dog would approach and give you a letter
âDearest (Y/N)..â
While you were distracted by the dog, Jeonghan probably left to get the helium coloured (Gold, Silver, White)balloons from dino and a bunch of flowers from joshua who were hiding nearby
You gasped as you spotted him coming back with flowers and balloons
âThank you for being there for me 24/7â
âIt has come to a point where i need you, i want you, and i love you.â
âWill you marry me?â
// gets down on one knee and opens the ring box revealing a simple, yet eye-catching ring, while giving you his 1004 smile <3
Would definitely jump for joy when you agree to his proposal
Puts on the ring for you, holding onto your delicate hands
And he will forget to hold on to the balloons
And they would all fly up
Jeonghan and you would laugh it off,
WOULD definitely share his whole plan with you after the event, recalling and telling you about every single problem he faced while planning
From seungcheolâs dog not cooperating to dino almost losing the ring
Ends up wanting to cuddle back at your house, emphasizing that he was your husband already
Would whine if you didnât let him
Ends the date by giving you a warm, passionate kiss
JOSHUA
Joshua is known as the gentleman of Seventeen
Heâll definitely want to date for a few years before marrying you
But before that, youâll have to meet his ENTIRE family first
That includes his grandparents and cousins and aunts and uncles
Youâve met his parents before when they visited him in Korea
But the rest of his family is in America which means both of you will get to travel overseas together â
His parents has a good impression of you and they already treat you as if youâre their own daughter
Tbh his family wonât worry much as they know and fully trusts that Joshua is capable of making the right decisions when it comes to his significant other
Somewhat means that youâre gonna be accepted and welcomed into the family hehe
Theyâll keep complimenting how both of you are perfect for each other
And his grandparents will start hinting to him to officially make you part of the family
*insert Joshuaâs super shy smile weeeee* đđđ
Heâll want to make his proposal a simple yet super memorable one
Joshuaâs from LA and beaches are quite a thing there so he plans to propose on a beach
Heâll take you for a simple western dinner at a cosy restaurant by the sea
After dinner, heâll make you walk with him along the beach
The skyâs getting darker and itâs getting chilly - so heâll make sure to take off his jacket and put it over you to keep you warm
Heâll suddenly stop and turn to you
âWhatâs wrong?â
He takes your hands and puts them over your eyes, âNothing, jagi! Just wait here, and donât open your eyes until I tell you to!â
âBut Josh-â
âJust do it!â
Youâre clueless about what heâs gonna do but follow his instructions anyway
Meanwhile, you can hear the clicking of lighter and guitar tuning sounds
âOkay jagi, you can look nowâ he comes behind you and removes your hands from your eyes
He then turns you around so youâll be facing him, and he hands you a bouquet of your favourite flowers, babyâs breath
He then steps aside and youâll see something like this:
Tiny glowing candles in the sand forming the shape of a big heart
âJoshua, whatâs this?â
âSurprise!â
And he pulls you so that youâre standing in the middle of the heart with him
He picks up his guitar thatâs lying on the sand and sings you 20
He chose 20 because he feels like the lyrics deem fit for what heâs about to do... Â itâs one of your favourite Seventeen songs
âI wanna be your morning baby, ijebuteon be alright. Hamkke inneun morning baby, I want you to be my night ~â (I wanna be your morning baby, from now on, be alright. Spend it together, morning baby, I want you to be my night.)
And you canât help but just smile and stare at how beautiful he is when he singsÂ
How he glances at you dreamily while singing đđđ
You canât help but wished that this moment will stay like that forever
But sadly, the song ends at some point and he puts down his guitar and steps closer to you
Suddenly, you feel yourself blushing as you try to avoid eye contact
He senses your shyness, raises your head so that your eyes meet and teases with a smirk, âDid you like that, jagi? đâ
You didnât want to give him the satisfaction, âWell⌠the candles are prettyâŚâ
âReally? Thatâs not all though. đâ
âYou mean thereâs more? đŻâ
Joshuaâs smile fades away as he takes a deep breath before he continuing
âY-y/n, I know that loving me isnât easy. Itâs been tough on you and I am grateful that youâre still here. Thank you for caring for me, being there for me, being true and being you. But now, I want to be the one who looks after youâŚâ
As he said those sweet words to you, you canât help but tear up
âBeing with you makes me happy and I really canât afford to lose youâŚâ
Joshua gets down on one knee and pulls out a ring from his pocket and presents it to you
âY/n, will you be mine forever?â
You were so overwhelmed by emotions and all you could do was smile and nodÂ
Joshuaâs eyes widen as a smile spreads across his face as he takes your left hand and puts the ring on your ring finger
He then stands up, wipes away your tears and pulls you into his chest for a warm hug
He whispers into your ear, âThank you, y/n. And you can never remove this ring.â
You look up to see him gazing at you with his perfect almond eyes that shimmers under the moonlight
âWhat if I donât want to listen to you?â you teased
âYou donât have a choice. Youâre officially-ish mine. đâ¨â
WOOZI
Heâs so shy
So damn shy
He definitely wants to do it in a private place where its only the both of you around
Aka his studio
The two of you would have probably dated for like a pretty long time now
Because he wants to make sure that youâre the one for him
And you want to make sure that heâs the one for you
(But honestly the two of you are a match made in heaven)
Maybe at first, he probably wouldnât see the point of having a proposal
I mean, youâve been dating for so long, youâre practically a married couple
heâd think that it wouldnât be necessary because itâs already so obvious that youâre going to marry him anyway, proposal or not
BUT OF COURSE, Seventeen would never tolerate such nonsense
âYOU HAVE TO MAKE IT OFFICIAL YOU TWAT,â screams jeonghanÂ
so he finally obliges and decides to surprise you
Jihoon being Jihoon will end up spending months pondering over how to propose
He will worry about everything
Even the smallest details
What coffee I should drink that day?
What should I wear?
What time should ask her?
He will probably consult all the Seventeen members for ideas and stuff
Literally ALL the members
He might also ask Ailee for some tips because heâs a clueless bean
âGirls like roses right? So Iâll just buy roses for her?â
âWoozi, just because Google said so, doesnât mean that sheâll like it. -.-â
Ok so on the day heâs gonna propose
Heâll probably be writing music in his studio while you accompany
And it feels like a normal date because the both of you have done this many times
But Jihoonâs extra awkward quiet that day and he wonât even look you in the eye when you talk to him
You figured that he was probably really stressed
The times he acted like this are usually during pre-comebacks when he was under the heavy pressure of creating new songs for their group
And you decide that you shouldnât probe him further so you returned to lying on the couch and scrolling through your phone
But in actual fact, he was just really stressed about how to propose to you
Seeing that youâre not going to attempt to talk to him, he decides to take this as a chance
Jihoon goes over to a corner of the room to retrieve a small box from his bag
He joins you on the other side of the couch, hands clutching onto the box as if his life depended on it.
âHey, I got something for you.â
He hesitates before passing you the box
Your hand reaches out to open the lid but before you can click it open, he stopped you?
âIf youâre not ready for it, you can just give it back to meâ trying to act all cool just because he thinks heâs a manly man
You kinda know where this is headed but you refuse to believe that this was happening
So youâre like âo..kay?â and stare at the box for like a long time
Jihoon obviously cannot stand the silence so heâs just like
â(Y/N), will you marry me?â
He says this while looking everywhere except you cause heâs nervous af
âI--I mean, weâre going to get married some point in the future, anyway, but the boys insisted I do this whole... proposal thing.â
Youâre shooooook but you sort of manage to crack a smile?
âThank god you said yesâ he whispers to himself, eyes still darting everywhere
So you kinda have to hold his face in your hands to make him look at you
And you smile while kissing him, telling him how grateful you were to have him
Sometimes it sucks how Jihoonâs a smol, unromantic, emotionless creature and you question how the both of you started dating in the first place but now you canât imagine life without him <3
