Fiction was once invented to teach, sure, but it wasn't meant to exclusively teach morals. It's meant as an exploration tool that offers an extra degree of safety! Every idea explored in fiction doesn't necessarily have to be explored in real life. by this method you can explore many topics and courses of actions that you couldn't or wouldn't ever explore in real life.

it's very important that you know that fictional characters are fictional (even if they are based on real life people) and are purposefully designed in such a way to service the exploration of the topics as best as possible by having empathetic (though not always sympathetic) traits and by upholding the logics of cause and effect.

As story does not work if a reader, or story teller for that matter, just produces nonsense that cannot be followed because neither reader nor writer cared to think about actions, motivations and causes. at that point it's at best a list of items, not a story.

In functioning stories you can explore topics in a metaphysical, magical or metaphorical way of thinking. You can explore the actions and possible consequences of those actions, despite never ever wanting to do these things in real life. You can explore your traumatic experiences from the perspective of your the abuser. You can learn to memorize the basics of a scientific process by using the story structure as a mnemonic. and the reasoning for writing these things can be yours, and yours alone, but the cool thing about fiction is you can share the end result: you can tell/write/draw/commision/film the story.

you don't HAVE to learn anything about the real world, and none of these types of stories need to have a moral lesson (in fact unless you read fables and childrens media, you often don't learn moral lessons) but reading stories does always train either empathy, sympathy, reasoning, insight in causality, or a combination of these factors.

Whether or not you learn a moral lesson or not THROUGH the empathy and sympathy that you feel for the characters is mostly just a secondary thing. that happens AFTER a story is written well enough that you can form empathy for something or someone that doesn't even exist.

So, the craft of this year has been paint your own pottery. I love ceramics, and would love to have an entire set-up myself, but as kilns and wheels and all are expensive, this has been scratching the itch, instead.

So far, I have painted a stacking tea set, a gnome couple, a fox plate, a small gnome, a gnome women next to a mushroom, a mushroom house mug, a pastel mug, a FFXIV tankard, a bowl and plate, a rubber ducky, a sparrow, a pastel galaxy mug that sadly broke, a pastel galaxy teapot to replace it, a typewriter planter, three tiles (a cross-stitch, and two dot arts), a squid mug, a water cup, a couple pumpkins, a GIANT candy bowl, a yarn bowl, a mug for a tumblr meme I am IN LOVE WITH, and I'm halfway finished with a coin bank that's a giant ice-cream sundae and will not hold coins, but just be pretty.

I am getting so much creative fulfillment from it, and it's continuing to solidify for me that every creative thing you make with your own hands really is another brick in the wall against despair. stop arguing about whether "sugar addiction" is real on a basis of some kind of neuroscience and start arguing about it on a basis of what addiction rhetoric means socially and politically

"sugar addiction" is a nonsensical phrase insofar as it does not make sense to talk about being dependent on something that all human bodies rely on. but really, that's completely beside the point. the points are as follows:

"addiction" has a certain currency in political discourse. think about the war on drugs, and the legacy of that rhetoric. it is pathologisation + demonisation working side-by-side to frame addiction as simultaneously a moral failing and a medical issue (a combination also seen, e.g., in discussions of sexually transmitted diseases)

sugar has also been heavily demonised in diet culture. my family was part of the "I quit sugar" trend, so I know all too well how much sugar can be treated like the most evil substance on the planet. again, demonisation language is paired with pathologising language when people then connect sugar to the concept of an "obesity epidemic"

when you then combine these things together, you start to get an idea of how dangerous the "sugar addiction" road is. people are led to believe that there is something wrong with them for habitually consuming something that all people need to consume. this only ever serves to further fatphobia and diet culture more broadly

when someone has a so-called "sugar addiction", they do not actually benefit from treating themself as an addict. the needs that they are trying to meet in their desire for sugar are more likely to be physiological. this can be a direct result of holding themselves to the unrealistic and unhealthy expectations that diet culture has held them to. in such a situation, it is healthier to slowly figure out a more balanced diet than to try to quit sugar entirely

Below are questions to consider while writing, and especially during the editing process, to create a more cohesive, rounded, and satisfying story for your readers.

There are 2 main types of writing styles: plot-driven or character-driven. Most writers naturally lean towards one writing style.

But the best writers understand that they must balance their preferred storytelling to create a satisfying tale.

By recognizing your writing preference, you will be able to identify the areas you need to balance.

Plot-Driven Stories

Often exciting and fast-paced.

Compel the reader to turn the page to find out how the characters will escape, evade, prevail, or overcome.

Focus on a set of choices that a character must make.

Meticulously tie together plot points to create a cohesive story.

Focus on ideas instead of people and their motivations.

Force your characters to make quick decisions that move the plot forwards. As a result, character development is secondary to plot development.

Character-Driven Story

Focused on studying the characters that make up your story.

Can deal with inner transformation or the relationships between the characters.

Focuses on how the character arrives at a particular choice.

When you zoom into the internal conflicts, you tend to focus less on the external conflicts.

The plot in a character-driven story is usually simple and often hyper-focused on the internal or interpersonal struggle of the character(s).

The plot is used to develop the character.

Many readers love character-driven stories because the author tends to put a premium on developing realistic, flawed, and human characters.

Readers can see themselves or someone they love in these characters and, as a result, connect emotionally.

you're bed-ridden in your illness, unable to perform your usual duties—it's the first time in the year you've been working for him that you've missed a single day, and yet you're absent for almost a week. your symptoms include a low-grade fever, a strange abdominal discomfort, and just a lingering feeling that sits under your skin like something is wrong.

you visit the doctor who runs a series of tests, and though nothing comes back conclusively, the doctor sits you down and asks you some questions about your daily life. maybe it's stress, maybe an allergy, maybe some environmental factor has brought this mysterious illness on. but when your physician hears about your work, her expression changes. she consults the test results again, eyes scanning over the reports raptly. her final remark (and the pamphlets she sends you home with) all point to one thing.

tobio stares down at the piece of paper you've placed before him with a pensive, irritated furrow upon his brow.

"what's this?" he asks, his cold gaze lifting towards you.

you have your head lowered in a bow—the lines of your body rigid and uncomfortable as you stoop in deference.

"why?" tobio asks, something flaring in the centre of his chest. it burns like anger, but there's something more there too. something primal and animalistic that tells him, goads him, to fight.

that's not an answer, you both know it, and before tobio knows what he's doing, he's already crossed the room and snatched your wrist up in his hand. when your eyes meet his in surprise, there are tears in them. from this close (the closest he's ever been to you, he thinks) there's no mistaking the way they shimmer upon your lash line—how they well up the longer you look at him.

you're trembling, your knees wobbling underneath you, and tobio worries for a moment that you might buckle in onto yourself.

"i can't," you warble, "you—you're making my body weird," you say, lifting your hand up to your face and clamping it over your mouth and nose. tobio pauses, realizing that he's been polluting the air around both of you with pheromones ever since you placed the letter of resignation upon the table before him.

but you've never been susceptible to that before.

he processes this slowly while you tremble, his hand still tightly wrapped around your wrist.

his eyes widen.

I read the Young Wizards series when I was probably 10 or 11, and absolutely loved it. Specifically Deep Wizardry was incredibly important to me; it was a huge push for me to get interested in the ocean and how humans affect it.

Thank you for writing such a wonderful series, especially one that didn't simplify the complex emotions and experiences children go through. Childhood was an extremely dark point in my life, but I consistently remembered your books as a comfort and reassurance of the goodness and sheer interesting-ness of the real world. I cannot express how fascinated and joyful the world you built in those stories made me.

I've started my re-read of So You Want To Be A Wizard today, at age 20. The writing still holds up to adult-me, and I'm enjoying the book all over again. I'm looking forward to reading Deep Wizardry again especially; I'm three years into studying Oceanography and Biology.

As for Deep Wizardry, at the oceanographic end— The amount of go-to-the-New-York-Public-Library-and-dig-out-the-data research I had to do for that astonishes me to this day. It was a long time before Google, and the only source of data for much of the background needed was NOAA stuff that was locally publicly available only there. (Some more info on that in this post.) The lack of even very basic maps such as this one (published three years after DW was) forced me to handcopy and merge data from various sources into homebrew mapping notes like this.

...So I have to say it's nice to discover that this doesn't stack up too badly against more modern mapping resulting from much better data. :)

And this area is apparently still on track to become a national marine sanctuary, assuming nothing goes wrong with the process secondary to yesterday's unfortunate events.

Granted, you had willingly agreed to stay after with Lucifer at RAD to finish up some of the work for the upcoming event (which event was it now again? Diavolo holds so many you can barely keep track of them anymore) but that wouldn’t stop you from complaining a little. In your mind of course. You gather the papers Lucifer had finished going over and put them in their respective folders. Silence fills the room as the two of you harmoniously work to at least make a little dent in the giant pile of paperwork. Why do these events always result in so much paperwork?

We’ve already stayed out far too long for me to make a proper dinner, we stay out any later and we might end up with Beel destroying the house again.” You accept that, you had wanted to head home as soon as possible anyway. Lucifer straightens out his uniform as you subconsciously end up doing the same, not missing the small smirk that forms at his lips once he notices.

“Hey, let’s just buy some takeout on our way home. I’ll be quicker and the sooner we get Beel food the better, y’know?” You suggest, Beel isn’t the only reason you suggested it though. You can tell Lucifer is quite tired himself and cooking for what could basically count as 16 people is something that takes a lot of energy. However, if you were to point that out he would glare at you, claim that he’s the furthest thing from tired, and stubbornly cook a dinner for 32 people instead.

“Alright,” he nods, “you’re right that the sooner we get food to Beel the better. So, I suppose we can have takeout today. Let us pass by Hell’s Kitchen then.”

We enter Hell’s Kitchen as servers rush past. No surprise, they are a very popular restaurant. You follow as Lucifer heads up to the register. Effortlessly he starts listing his and each of his brothers’ favourite orders, Beel’s order taking about twice as long as all of the brothers’ orders combined. Lucifer glares at you, probably both for pointing out the picture and for using that nickname out in public, as he scoffs. “I do not keep a photo of you in my wallet, we must get your eyes checked soon. Humans shouldn’t be seeing things that are not there.” You roll your eyes at his response, you know very well what you saw and he wasn’t going to make you seem insane. As quickly as possible with your human body you grab onto his uniform and reach for his pocket where he kept his wallet. Lucifer is faster though, not super shocking news, and grabs onto your wrist. It doesn’t hurt, you note as you try to free yourself, but you really aren’t given any wiggle room here.

“I was going to grab your wallet,” you say as nonchalantly as if you were talking to him about the weather, “I mean, if I was really seeing things you should be okay with me checking your wallet, right?” A deep scowl starts to form on his face as you continue to press him with a face full of mock shock. “Unless…” You gasp. “You were lying to me, Luci? Don’t tell me you were trying to gaslight me! Really, what am I supposed to do with you? There’s no need to be ashamed of keeping a picture of me in your wallet. Really, I support it, I know you can be pretty desperate and clingy so this way you can still keep me with you at all times,” you tease him.

Lucifer’s scowl deepens even more— you didn’t know how that was possible— as he practically sends you a death glare. You’re sure that if you had been anyone else you would have withered away on the spot, but you’re not anyone else and you can tell he’s just trying to hide how flustered he is. “You humans always spout such inane things,” is all he says as he lets go of your hand. You carefully note how he hadn’t really disagreed with what you had said. Of course he wouldn’t, you both know nothing you had said had been nothing but the truth. You also manage to catch how the tips of his ears are bright red before he quickly walks to the pick-up area.

“Our order isn’t ready yet. You know that right, Luci?”

The Resort (Part 1)

THIS IS AN URGENT ANNOUNCEMENT TO ALL THOSE IN THE [REDACTED] & [REDACTED] AREAS

It has come to our attention that an unfortunate accident at one of our chemical treatment plans has occurred on the [REDACTED]st of [REDACTED] 2023, resulting in the contamination of the water supply in the above mentioned areas for a period of approximately 3 hours and 10 minutes.
