Showrunner Duane Capizzi did an informal Q&A session with some fans in a CS chatroom. There are several question askers, all marked by name. Get some insider knowledge on the show, after the break!
Duane Capizzi:
Just checking things out! Feel like I'm poking my head through a door at a party I'm crashing haha.
Fun to see everyone hanging out and talking all good things Carmen
Can't stay long - I should have taken the code name "Crimson Phantom"
Crimson Phantom - I like the sound of that (if it's not already taken haha)
Carmen:
It's an awesome nickname! Personally I'm more of a Scarlet Santa Rosa person myself- I love that little interaction with Jules and Carmen in the special
Duane Capizzi:
Scarlet Santa Rosa! Yes, that was really cute between them. Too cute in fact.
Coach Brunt had some names for her too if i recollect
Arden:
Lambkins
Wren:
Didn't Brunt also call her Monica Santa Monica once?
Mage:
Yeah in the Boston episode
Also Josie San Jose
Arden:
I personally prefer Fedora the Explora
Duane Capizzi:
Josie yes hahaha
I can't believe we got away with Fedora the Explorer! I thought that would be noted but I'm glad we did. So funny!
Carmen is amazing! She "owns" whatever she wears, doesn't she?
Carmen:
She definitely owns Carmen Brand Outerwear
Duane Capizzi:
I'll share another tidbit though (along the lines of Carmen being a love story where everyone is in love with Carmen).
It was important for obvious reasons that the show be (among other things) about female empowerment. And we wanted to celebrate fashion of course. But it was super important to me to not fall into the "male gaze" trap. That was something I imparted to the storyboard crew and directors. It's a fine line, I know, but I think we succeeded.
Arden:
You sure did. What I adore about Carmen Sandiego is how unsexualized all the characters were while still being inclusive to different body types and races
Duane Capizzi:
Well artists love to sneak things in! So it was a little rule I had
They were mostly great about it - in all the 32 episodes, I think I asked to change only two shots for that reason. Where I had to go "ahem"
"Outerwear" sounds so peculiar but I think that's what made it work. I kept changing it back and forth and sometimes I'm surprised to see/hear it in the show. For the longest time it was "Carmen Clothiers." Did I make the right decision? Sometimes you can rework things too much and lose sight - it happens!
The one shot that leaps to mind was Shadowsan carrying her fireman style at top of 202, as they were escaping through the tunnels. Her, um, fundamentals were just a little too front and center to not fall into the "male gaze" trap. Nothing awful! It was borderline. We just adjusted the angle a bit
Julia:
My favorite most definitely has to be her formal wear from the "need for speed caper"
Duane Capizzi:
I'd have to think about my favorite outfit or top five. All her evening gowns of course!
Maybe "witch." We couldn't make it red because it would not have been a very good disguise (plus, you know: "Scarlet Witch" haha).
But let's not underestimate her signature hat/coat - I continue to be enamored with how we updated her look from the old trench coat thing.
Arden:
Not me suddenly motivated to draw Carmen in a scarlet witch outfit
Duane Capizzi:
Then you have to draw Zack as Pietro!
(or Player? Only his fingers are speedy)
Arden:
Idea: what if player (or Shadowsan) was Pietro
Duane Capizzi:
Shadowsan IS Pietro. He's so quick you never see him move.
Wren:
Shadowsan's fight with Brunt where it went slowmo and he moved fast was so cool!
Duane Capizzi:
Hey, Shadowsan is quite the fashion plate too - am I right?
I love the outfits on the show. So good! So perfect! But, I'm not being very modest am I
I really love SS in the dark trench coat. So. Bad. Ass.
Carmen:
Any thoughts on the Fashionista memory thing?
Duane Capizzi:
Fashionista, sure! What do you want to know?
Carmen:
Give me a second-
Duane Capizzi:
Thank you for noting the aesthetics on the show! Much effort, passion and vision from all involved - Chromosphere, our directors, animators, composers, sound mixers - everyone gave it all they had, it was so inspiring for all involved.
Carmen:
Was there any significance to that specific memory- Carmen defending Julia in the Fashionista Caper- being chosen as the first memory she remembered when she went outside? Like, why that scene specifically over any others for example?
(referring to the finale)
Duane Capizzi:
Oh, that! To be honest, not from me: we were just trying to do the "swirl of confused memories" like we did with Gray earlier in the season. We wanted to show that the ACME device had jostled some old memories loose and that "the girl agent with glasses" was now taking root in Carmen's rush of memories/emotions
But that specific memory, not necessarily from my POV - it could have been any number of Julia moments, like their first meeting on the train (for instance)
The director Jos Humphrey must have picked it. It worked for me!
Carmen:
We all loved that it was that specific memory that was chosen out of all Julia and Carmen moments, the fact that she remembered defending her was an added emotional experience to the already emotional finale
Duane Capizzi:
Well let's talk about the original scene in 204! On the surface just a light fun episode, but so many things came together there: Shadowsan connecting with Player; SS getting his new clothes; but the key thing was switching Julia back from doing Chief's bidding back to Carmen's side. The episode was built around the moment that Carmen pulls Julia on stage with her (I'm not kidding). That was THE moment
Carmen:
We have MANY questions... we should probably set a limit
Duane Capizzi:
Ask away - I don't mind. Honestly, Carmen is my favorite topic! I've been living, breathing, dreaming Carmen for the last 5 years! I don't think there's much to say, I think it's all there on screen. But happy to talk about it because I love to
Cam:
I have a question, what about the color theory in Carmen Sandiego? What do you think certain colors mean as in, blue, yellow, green, and red.
we have our own ideas about the colors but it would be interesting to hear from your perspective
Duane Capizzi:
Color theory! Well chromosphere color scripts every episode (!). If those haven't been shared publicly yet remind me, maybe I can get permission to do so or have them do it. They are lovely to behold.
But basically Carmen = red (duh); Vile = green; Acme = blue. That's the simple version. We started talking about that early on.
color scripts = they do thumbnail art of key scenes to share mood/emotion
we tried to NOT use red for non-Carmen scenes; and scenes where she was significant the color red would be dominant or sometimes symbolically precede her (for instance).
If you google color scripts I'm sure you will see some come up. Try Pixar color scripts for instance. There's a great Art of Pixar book with their color scripts.
Arden:
Do you think Julia is blue or purple?
Duane Capizzi:
Haha, Jules definitely purple! Cute.
Mage:
You've just confirmed the whole color theory these guys have been working on for a while.
Duane Capizzi:
I was actually being funny - is she actually color scripted purple in the series? Wow, my mind might be blown
Garfield:
Now I have a question!
Julia has great admiration and respect for Carmen. Do you think Carmen has as much respect and admiration for Julia as Julia does for her?
Duane Capizzi:
I think Julia might just be a little infatuated with Carmen (even if she hasn't fully articulated how to herself - remember, the show may be sophisticated but it's still a kids show). But mostly Julia just knows/intuits/deduces Carmen's a good guy, pretty much from the beginning. I think the two have a connection that defies space and time in some ways - look at how much they work in tandem without being in the same scenes together much of the time. I love that!
As for Carmen, of course she respects Julia: she knows Julia "gets" her, and respects Julia's smarts and mutual love of history/respect for cultures.
I love how Chase is the ultimate buzzkill for whatever might be stirring in Julia as she's watching Carmen fly away in the Pilot. She's like, "whooaa ..." Then Chase falls onto the windshield. Hilarious!
Nina:
I was actually wondering if Carmen and Julia were meant to have opposing color schemes? With Julia's original outfit I mean
Duane Capizzi:
Oh, good question about Julia's original outfit: I'd have to think about that or ask Jos or Chromosphere. J's colors ARE sort of a drabber distant cousin to Carmen's, aren't they? I think mostly we just wanted "drab workaday" colors for Interpol, knowing that both of them would eventually be slicked up as ACME Agents.
Nova:
Devineaux is immune to injuries it is the only reason why he has lasted so long in ACME and Interpol
Duane Capizzi:
Devineaux, one of my favorite lines: "I did not know you two kept in touch."
Am I right?
SelinIndigo:
I have one question:
Will we ever know Carmen's given name? Also, if you don't mind when is her birthday in this reboot?
Duane Capizzi:
Carmen's given name: never say never! But for where our series ended, I thought it would just interfere. That's not how I wanted you to remember her. It would have just been a label and spoiled her mystique IMO
Player, however: we totally messed with you! "Mr. Bouchard."
Carmen's birthday?
Hmmm.
Maybe month and day but not year: would hate to date the show
I also don't like naming ages in shows because it just gets weird with timelines and such. Or can be.
Carmen:
I made a post about this a while backā how did Carmen end up getting Julia's apartment address? did she just text her for it or straight up ask? did she find out on her own in the least stalker-y way possible? I just have so many theories- do you have any thoughts on it?
Duane Capizzi:
The apartment in the IA special? Oh that whole story was like one big dream sequence ;)
Arden:
What does the wink mean? Does Julia even live in an apartment?
Nina:
Does that mean Carmen dreamt she gave Julia roses or-
Duane Capizzi:
We played things faster and looser for fun there
Okay, I just saw what time it is. Yikes! Time flies when you're having fun. Well THANK YOU EVERYONE (for loving the show, for building this site, for being you.

Overly Belated Game Impressions from PAX Aus 2018
Every year I go to PAX Aus with some close friends to check out the Incredible Future of Games that everyone else already checked out six months ago. This is usually coupled with checking out some wonderfully well-preserved old games and hardware, along with some typically wonderfully weird indie stuff I've never heard about before. Every year, I've written up a little review of things I've played (or watched get played) on an old private forum some friends maintain, but this year, I've figured, fuck it, I might as well post it publicly, right?
Not Indie Games
Super Smash Bros Ultimate sure is a Smash game. That's not a bad thing, but since this was the same demo build from E3 (so before the Castlevania reveals) there wasn't a huge amount of surprises - just a damn good fightfest. Amusingly, the demo booths were split into two groups - For Fun (items on, Switch Pro Controller) and For Glory (items off, the new Gamecube controllers). New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe has a nonsensical name and spawned an even more nonsensical meme. The demo had six levels to play - three from the base game, three from the Luigi expansion - with both the new and old characters to play. It doesn't look like anyone other than Toadette can get the meme crown, meaning players using that character won't have to jostle for powerups in multiplayer. I didn't play Pokemon Let's Go Eevee because the queue was like 90 minutes long, but my friend braved it and gave it a resounding "ehhhh" with a hand gesture resembling a teetering see-saw. Apparently the co-op stuff wasnāt available in the demo, either, which concerned my friend since that was specifically what he was interested in.
V-Rally 4 looks nice aesthetically, but the gameplay seems pretty "eh". The name seems to be about the most interesting part. Dragonball FighterZ for Switch seems like a pretty decent port. I donāt know much about the source material or original game, but it ran fast and I didn't notice any obvious hitching or whatever.
Luigi's Mansion for Nintendo 3DS is... a 3DS port of the Gamecube launch title. It ran at a solid 30fps... a whole lot better than I recall Luigi's Mansion 2/Dark Moon running, but I was also using a vanilla 3DS for that game while the demo units at PAX were New models.
Indie Stuff
The Xbox Adaptive Controller was present as part of a demo setup for a version of One More Line. I wasn't expecting to have to push the Big Novelty Button as hard as I did, I thought it'd be a lighter touch for some reason. Although I know the button kinda isn't the point of the thing...
Supertrucks Offroad is a PC adaption of a mobile take on old top-down racing games. There's promise here, but the current handling and physics leave a lot to be desired. Hopefully it continues to develop and evolve.
Infinity Heroes is a card game with some simplified mechanics and animated versions of all the card graphics. Has potential, but still plenty of rough edges and pre-alpha grit to sand out.
Metal Wolf Chaos XD sure is a port of an Xbox game. It feels pretty well done, all things considered - the framerate is great, the controls are responsive, and the English subtitles are sometimes even connected to what's being said by the characters!
Ghoul Britannia: Land of Hope and Gorey is a point-and-click adventure game that, unexpectedly, uses a Fallout-esque isometric perspective instead of the usual side-on.
Table of Tales is a VR tabletop RPG where you control an entire party of Scoundrels by moving pieces around a constantly-changing board and playing ability cards. Since it was a VR game, there was a long sign-up queue to play, so the developers set up a little booth where Arbitrix, the game's DM (and, incidentally, a mechanical talking bird), would cheerfully explain the game for you. He said my goatee was perfect for a pirate adventure. It was probably intended as a compliment.
Supermarket Shriek is very similar to a game I prototyped years ago, except it's got a Supermarket Sweep theme and shrieking goats. Also, it's actually getting finished and has more than one level, which is another differentiator. Use the shoulder triggers to make the characters inside a shopping trolley scream their lungs out, propelling the trolley and allowing you to steer it through silly retail-themed obstacle courses.
You probably think, based on the squat protagonist and camera angle, that Tunic is a riff on Zelda: A Link to the Past. Surprise! It's actually a riff on Zelda: Ocarina of Time! The combat is very similar, with a dodge/roll button and Z-targeting (although I guess it's more RT-targeting now) that jumps to the next enemy upon beating your current one. I can't say enough nice things about the graphics... One thing that's interesting is that the entire game is in a fictional language. This includes stuff like the pause menu!
Dash Blitz is a pretty amateurish attempt at a Smash-esque platform fighter. The "feel" just isn't there, sadly.
Nom Nom Apocalypse is a top-down dual-stick roguelite about fighting off food monsters. It looks pretty interesting, but sadly I didnāt get to go back and give it a hands-on look.
Henry Mosse and the Wormhole Conspiracy is a good old-fashioned point and click adventure. The graphics are wonderfully drawn in a cartoon style, but they suffer from really puppet-y animation like an old Flash cartoon, and it breaks my heart.
No Moss Studios bought along Beam Team, a couch co-op game about fighting a giant donut that I didnāt get to try, as well as a collection of weird little Patreon-funded oddities like Sprout Up, a simple little mobile game about weaving through vines, and My Magpie, a bird-aiding simulator of sorts.Ā
Little Reaper is a platformer with a fun movement twist in that you can throw your scythe - which travels in an arc like a hammer in Mario - and teleport to where it lands. I'll have to give this a closer look.
Mars Underground is an Earthbound-esque RPG-style adventure game with a Groundhog Day-style conceit of being stuck in a time-loop. I can't really say it struck me, to be honest.
Scout's Honor is a co-op party game where four players team up to set-up a camp-site in a limited amount of time while dealing with hazards and such. It looks kinda cute, reminds me of Overcooked a bit.
Ice Caves of Europa is a rather odd-controlling game where you pilot a hover-drone controlled by an artificial intelligence. This one probably takes a bit more time to wrap your head around than a convention center allows.
Introspect looks really cool - a Shadow of the Colossus-style boss rush with an emphasis on movement tricks and agility. I didn't get to play it while I was there, but the developers were handing out download codes for the show floor build. It seems pretty fun, although it still needs a good deal of polish.
Soundfall is a dual-stick rhythm-shooter where you have to get to the end of a course before the song ends, with rewards for shooting and slashing to the beat ala Crypt of the NecroDancer. One to watch.Ā
Ticket to Earth is a tactical strategy RPG ala Fire Emblem with a tile-matching mechanic that makes how you move to your enemies even more important by limiting your movement and charging your special abilities. The comic artwork is nice, although the talking heads only seem to have one or two facial expressions.
Nova Flow is a first-person speedrunner that reminds me of a blend of Mirror's Edge's DLC maps and that one paint game that got incorporated into Portal 2. One of the demo levels was apparently one of the hardest levels in the game, and the developer was quite impressed at my getting within inches of completing it before the demo timer ran out...
Dawnblade seems to be an attempt at doing the whole Diablo thing on a phone, with the player hacking their way through short, pre-made maps. Visually, it looks like any of a million other games riffing off of Warcraft 3, and it seems to have some weird mobile game trappings like a stamina system to limit the amount of time you can play in a period of time.
Little Bit Lost is a survival game where you've been shrunk down to the point where ants tower over you and are powerful monsters. This one felt real early. It has promise, but needs a lot of polish to truly deliver on it.
Rogue Singularity is a 3D platformer with procgen levels. The feel didn't gel with me, and I can't really say I liked it all that much. It didn't help that the Switch port I played seemed to lack anti-aliasing entirely, giving the entire scene an unpleasant jagged look.
Ashen looks utterly fascinating - an open-world Souls-esque action RPG with Journey-style "passive" co-op where you can occasionally meet other, anonymous players out in the world and either help them or leave them to their fate. It looks really pretty.
Speaking Simulator is a hilarious puzzler where you have to manually operate a human mouth in order to say Entirely Normal Phrases in order to convince people that you are absolutely a human and not a murder robot in disguise.
Untitled Goose GameĀ had a massive queue that I was absolutely not going to fuck with. :(

Hindsight: My thoughts on Loki (2021)
Spoilers below. Please correct me if I slip up. I am in no way shape or form educated on ANYTHING to do with the making of films, how to critique this stuff etc, this is all just my opinion. If I havenāt covered a scene, itās probably because itās already been covered much better than I can. This is my extended episode 1 review.
Episode 1: GLORIOUS PURPOSE
Pre-title scene
The scene titles looking like a train station combined with the scrolling through time is such a cool stylistic choice.
The music is familiar, but followed by an alternate shot of Loki as Cap. A different perspective of something known, how fitting. FYI, Iām going to mention music a lot.
Love how no one questions the Hulk terrifying people.
This is the last time Loki will hear Thor call his name, or speak to him. Oh darn, I made myself sad.
Marvel studios logo
The Marvel logo changing colours + Loki theme finally taking the centre stage. I love it.
The comments made on Loki soundtrack videos saying āI see that the Mandalorian soundtrack has become a genreā are so accurate it hurts. Shout out to Ludwig btw, he deserves all the awards for his soundtracks.
My thoughts so far: This part is setting up the general shift in tone from what weāve seen in past Marvel projects, even the other shows. It reaffirms the audienceās subconscious that whilst we are familiar with the characters, thereās new twists up ahead, subtle hints to oncoming mischief. Props to the entire team behind the series.
Gobi Desert Scene
As much as I liked the opening bug crawl, the following interactions look a bit CGId. Iām being picky, they really are gorgeous. Itās also difficult after having seen the Mandalorian, but that show really paid attention to scenery as it was an instrumental part of the story, whereas here itās just one scene and all the others are stunning.
The parallels to Tony in the desert. Loki immediately rips off the muzzle (?).
I just watched the scene and yes, Tony rips off the mask immediately.
Also I think I would have definitely had a crush on young RDJ.
And Gwyneth Paltrow (GOOP LADY) if I didnāt know her now.
Props to Tom Hiddlestonās acting. Lokiās face when he sits up is just pure confusion but with the signature hint of indignation that Iād expect from his characterisation at this point.
The rock lmao.
THE MUSIC WHEN B-15 (MY QUEEN) APPEARS. HELL YEAH!
Also props to the supporting cast of minutemen, where does Marvel find these people? Theyāre so well choreographed, they all move perfectly and itās a joy to watch.
Love the time doors honestly.
I couldnāt have been the only one who thought that the temp pads were Samsung phones for a sec right?
Lol is that unintentional foreshadowing about the TVA? Jk Iām just clowning.
Has anyone spoken about what the Temp pad showed?
My theory is that āUnitsā refer to a predetermined rate of change [e.g. m/s] where one unit = one increment of change.
The steady rate of change here is interesting. Iāll talk about it more at the end of the next episode.
I love the music, just the slow ticking increasing in pace and the dramatic flares brought on by the strings (I think), simply divine. Natalie Holt got it spot on and props to Tom Hiddleston and literally everyone involved for understanding the importance of good music with this series. Iāll talk about this in depth in the next episode, just wanted to mention it when it first started that I noticed.
In retrospect, I can definitely retract my critique of the background in the scene. It holds up well now that Iāve rewatched it.
B-15 doesnāt get enough love. Shout out to Wunmi Mosaku, sheās a trooper and Iām here to hype her up.
Also y'all I just checked the cast list and ???? Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner and Tessa Thompson are on it?????? MARVEL TF IS THIS WHAT TOM MEANT BY EP 4 BEING WILD I-
Tomās acting chops: The face moment. You know the one. Itās pretty incredible.
Theory from me: the reason that Loki doesnāt see the hit coming is because B15 was moving unnaturally fast.
Itās the immediate change in the music to reflect the audienceās reaction at the standard fight scene taking a strange turn for me lads.
B-15 doesnāt smile, which I think is in character for her.
Sheās seen this shit wayyyy too many times.
Weāre not even five minutes into the first ep and a) Iāve waffled this much, Gods, and b) the music has changed at least 3?? Times to reflect whatās happening. I love it.
My theory about resetting the timeline: the reset charges get rid of anything in the immediate vicinity of the branch, pretty much a mini-apocalypse of the timeline. If everything is erased, none of it matters. Does that make sense?
Taking away the Tesseract while yes, it serves a purpose with showing Loki the might of the TVA later on, also reflects how nitpicky the TVA are about their time-keeping. They do everything in a very orderly fashion, but as we see later, the outdated nature of things is very human.
The TVA - the elevator thing
Man I love the TVAās look. Someone (and Iāve heard that Kate Herron was also very particular about the set design) went to extraordinary lengths with every single scene, not just this one, but the one before as well.
Heck I just want to appreciate how much of a visual feast this series is. Good on āem.
The shots changing angle is also very interesting. They switch it up between one-takes, close-ups of differing extremities and it just keeps the flow fast-paced, ya know?
Watching Loki run was hilarious.
āSounds dumb.ā - Casey, Null Time Zone.
This weird robot is what I think of when the TVA is mentioned. Advanced tech mimicking a retroistic 70s feel.
The catās adorable.
The clock. The cup. The placing of props. Impeccable.
The clockās hands donāt move whilst theyāre on screen.
The realisation on his face when he eyes the stack of papers.
Why is the wall so badly scratched???
I love that the signature is in character. I have a huge thing for attention to detail lmao.
Again, why are all of the walls so scratched? If they could talk, Iād presume itās just a set design choice but itās interesting that they did that.
Does anyone else want a TVA sweater vest?
Tickets
The opening zoom in on Loki combined with the consistent brown-orange colours of the set makes the room look uniform and encompassing. I love how the lights are always placed in a repetitive manner so rooms are given the illusion that they go on forever.
Lighting here creates depth, but whilst the lights form a ceiling, we canāt actually see how theyāre suspended and I think thatās neat.
The posters. Yes.
This is the first time I noticed the different minutemen uniforms. This oneās half orange-red and black. Pretty cool imo.
Shout out to Tara Strong and the entire animation.
The butterfly was a nice hint to the butterfly effect, and the music is perfect as always.
The wooden walls in the background of this shot. How very 70s.
The reflection showing the guy getting pruned is pretty cool.
Again, another clock with no movement on the wall.
The first 11 minutes are up and weāve made it to the title! If youāve read this far, congrats.
1549 Aix-en-provence, France
Just speculating, weāre in a church with an initial high-angled nearly birdās eye view and then a cut to one looking up at Mobius. I guess it means even if we think as viewers our perspective is omniscient, weāre not spared from the mystery in this series.
Whoās in the stained glass window?
I love how they tie in a detail as small as the gum. It just goes to show when you havenāt got much time, every character interaction is meaningful.
Props to Owen Wilson, he really sold Mobius to me.
Mirrors in a church showing the devil behind Mobius. Or on his side.
Time court 37
The time court 37 really reminds me of train stations.
The chairs remind me of pews. They sure are reverent of the Time keepers.
The lighting is a cool, bluish tinge for the first time Iāve noticed. Especially on Ravonna (MY LOVE!).
B-15 knows Lokiās clowning lmaooo.
Ravonna isnāt here for it either.
Ravonnaās nailpolish is a very nice shade of brown.
Theory: Resetting is ābeing brainwashed for the TVAā. Not very original, but itās interesting that the TVA thinks that Loki would be useful as a worker, unlike the guy who got pruned earlier.
The TVA exterior is amazing. It also extends forever in all directions, even down.
Time Theatre 25
What is that elevator music??
āI thought you didnāt like to talkā Ragnarok, anyone?
Loki reading the āTime theatreā sign whilst rambling. Gotta give it to him, heās always aware of his surroundings.
The little TVA logo on Mobiusā shirt.
Shout out to whoever did the costuming. Personally, I liked the shirts with no collars, and the armour of the minutemen and Hunters came off to me as practical but not ignorant of the branding that the TVA likes.
Theory (bear with me): Once youāre a part of the TVA, youāre not collared anymore, though there is an appearance of that on the shirts.
Seriously tho, what are those shirts like? Mobius doesnāt have a collar.
Why do the ties justā¦ end?
Neat details:
Holo projector 35.
The lights being reminiscent of skylights but still leaving the characters in the dark. āThe sun will shine on us again, brother.ā Not yet.
The reflection of the projector in the table/on the ground.
Loki: *turns away.*
Mobius: *sips Josta.*
Seriously, the lighting is great. Loki moving in and out of the shadows? Great way to show his mistrust/ unease of the situation.
The illusion speech is the last time we really hear 2012 Loki in my eyes, mainly because Mobius really gets into the cracks of who Loki is and then thereās action.
The āI was- I amā Freudian slip is perfection.
Side note the musicās changed yet again. Itās definitely setting up the more mournful tones for seeing his motherās death.
I find it interesting that the door is partially in the shadows.
Doors are symbols of opportunities, barriers and both death and birth from what I remember of high school English.
From what I know in interrogations the person being interrogated is allowed to sit with their back to a door. Initially, both Loki and Mobius are sideways, equidistant from the door. When Loki wants to run, he edges closer to the door, even if it is just to make a point. Excellent blocking in my eyes.
Oh man, Mobiusā little gestures.
āAlways so perceptive about everyone but yourself.ā I really donāt have to talk about the significance of that line, do I?
Frigga being stabbed in the back. Little solace to a dead man? Ouch. That hurt me too.
Lokiās wounds heal unnaturally fast, because heās no mortal.
Mobius really drives home the last point. Who says ālike you did your motherā ??? Owen sold how Mobius can influence Loki's mind.
The ābest versions of themselves' line and showing Thor must have hit Loki hard. He spent two movies trying to prove who he is, measuring himself against Thor. And then he sees them both working together and being equals.
Lokiās escape
Wunmi and Owenās line delivery is unforced and charged, completely in character.
Mobius looking under the table is hilarious to me.
The music.
The tidy cubicle = healthy timeline is a bit contradictory because theyāre supposedly in the null time zone but okay.
Is no one going to mention the taxidermy ferret?
Loki just had an identity crisis. His āgut you like a fishā seems in character.
The dudeās really questioning everything he knows lmao.
Caseyās āwhatās a fishā was really our first hint that not everything is what it seems to be at the TVA.
It amuses me that Lokiās on his knees when he gets the Tesseract.
Iām sure someoneās pointed it out already, but given that Loki takes back the Time Twister, itās possible he could have stolen an Infinity stone.
Again, pointās already been made but Loki seeing the Infinity stones is what sells the power of the TVA.
Please, the rest of the office not giving a damn when one dudeās having some drama is hilariously on point. They really said ānot my problemā.
Lokiās future
The screen on the table showing what heās rewinding as it happens.
Btw if you pause any moment during that, youāll see a scene.
A quick note on Lokiās characterisation:
Heās been through a lot in a very short period of time, quite literally finding out that his actions donāt have any consequences. Heās lost all autonomy, especially as a god who probably believed he was not as restrained as mortals. More on this in later Eps.
I really liked Ragnarok because it showed Loki and Thorās maturity; they had to step out of legacies that were thousands of years old and come to terms with a universe that was much bigger than them. It also fleshed out their relationship as brothers, but not at the expense of who they were. Loki still is a schemer, and he talks more because he has less to hide in my eyes. Heās no longer just a villain, and that canāt be shown by just actions, especially in his own tv show.
Lokiās little laugh when Thor talks about giving him a hug. Man that was sad.
What shouldnāt be forgotten is that Loki doesnāt know how it ends. He doesnāt know whether Thanos gets defeated. For all he knows, he died in vain and left behind a brother with no family.
The collar says DANGER.
This is the scene that really nails it home to Loki that his purpose in life was to cause pain. He found out his glorious purpose in that timeline, heās conflicted as Sylvie points out in Ep 3.
When Loki talks to Mobius, theyāre both in medium shots. Theyāre on the same page.
Lokiās delivery has changed when talking about the 'illusion' but Mobius hasnāt. That may change in the later episodes.
1858 Salina, Oklahoma
Others have covered this better.
Sylvieās theme is similar to Lokiās but not identical.
Itās got sinister tones which change throughout the series.
I love how you can see the images of the minutemenās past and future as they walk through a time door, they literally step through time.
Iāve got a whole other post on the end credits scenes. Cheers if you read this all lads.
Ep 1 review
All in all, this was a scene-setting episode. One of my friends texted me and said āLoki really went through ten years worth of character development in minutesā and I think that sums it up pretty well. Itās a great set up, but the next episode is where the plot begins to progress. Really enjoyed it. Thereās not too much that was aided by what we know from ep 3 besides Caseyās fish from what I caught.
See y'all next time, if there is anyone reading this. Look after yourselves!
#spoilers#loki spoilers#my respect for people that write scripts/analysis of any kind has increased immensely.#opinion#things i've noticed#sorry if they're not original#i don't hate mobius he is just very good at being an interrogator and it scares me#loki#loki review#b-15 deserves love#the analysts (mobius) the hunters the minutemen casey every one of them deserves love#here's to everyone who worked so hard and put so much into this series

Continuation of part 1
This part is pretty fast and I may or may not have shoved two different narratives here. Like the second with "I try to picture me-" we see Raiden and Sara
Originally, I wanted this whole scene to play out uninterrupted for the whole line, as it's likely hard to imagine the Raiden Shogun not being there as their archon for most of her subjects. Her influence goes deep throughout the people and culture of Narukami Island.
But then I also really liked the timing of this clip from her demo where there were two Raidens but one disappears, so I kept it. The transition rapidly zooming into the Shogun's face is also meant to show the perspective of who can't imagine being without who
"I try to picture me without you but I can't," Inazuma can't picture itself without the Shogun, Ei can't picture herself without Makoto.
Now this next sequence is mostly the unedited dramatic showcase sequence in her demo because oddly enough, it's perfectly in beat with Immortals that it's kinda terrifying, props to the Mhy editors for the consistent beat. I could've replaced the trailer's audio with the song honestly, but I had an agenda.
Anyway it's pretty cool
Then here we have her raising the sword. It draws the eye up, a perfect for guiding the eye from her to the sword to Kazuha's friend when it switches to the animated cutscene
He's here because he is a pretty important figure in that he dared to brave and challenge the Vision Hunt Decree. "We could be immortals, but not for long" fits him because his conviction burned so bright that it essentially immortalized him by standing up against the God of Eternity herself. It was short lived, but a moment can last forever and his ambition was carried on.
Also yes I did wake up and choose violence that day by putting him there.
For "And live with me forever now, pull the blackout curtains down," I initially wanted to put the clip with Raiden and Sara in the first part and switch to this on the second part of the line, but 1. I already used it and 2. the blackout part was too short for the scene to play out and it just didn't flow nicely, so I simply put the entirety of it in that line. Though it could kinda fit with the first part as Ei essentially pulled Traveller into the domain.
Lumine has no bearing being the traveller here, she was just the one I used when I first played so
"But not for long," I thought it would be kinda funny to put Ei here because you won't be living for long if she had any say in it.
Next is the fight scene right before Traveller is knocked out. The flash from the lightning strike was used to transition into the next clip of empty Visions falling all around Raiden
The scenes from Kazuha's friend to the one where the Shogun slowly steps down is meant to showcase what transpired with her rule and dictatorship, that everyone else won't last in the face of the Eternity she currently wills.
Editing this until 4am last night was a mistake, but I like how it turned out

early-mid season (brunch?) anime review time, featuring acclaimed hits such as Oreimo 2: Incest Divide By 0 Error, Re:Zero Sidequest: Furry Fuckers who Shit in the Woods, and my personal favorite, The Cube Show
oh god this is so long im officially otaku trash here we go
so lets start with the best show ever:
clockwork planet: wow this was weak. I really liked No Game No Life but this does not hold that standard (not that itās a high standard to aspire to but this is just not as fun). This was absurdly slow cheap looking trash that uses a Potentially Interesting concept to do absolutely nothing. dropped. dropped right on its dumb head full of gears.
alice to zouroku: also looks pretty cheap but it has a lot of interesting stuff going on. I donāt know how to Feel. the show hasnāt really ramped up yet but it could go in a ton of directions and Iām ready to be totally blindsided by where this goes.
ID-0: man this really is the Season of Baffling Concepts. tay keeps telling me this is a comedy but im not seein it. I think itās a pretty decent space sci fi concept show that seems to be gearing up for... something philosophical? no clue. I like what weāre setting up and I want more. unfortunately this is the type of show where, like with gatchaman, I cannot physically focus my eyes on the mech designs long enough to realy appreciate them. probably just my problem though.
seikaisuru kado: the real standout of the SF offerings this season and my personal favorite this far. I donāt want to spoil too much but The Cube Show is not a show you should skip. looks and sounds fantastic, concept is great, writing is... really not fucking around at all, is it? slow, grindy high concept sci fi with very human characters (lol get it). this will be remembered even if it ends up being stupid (it wont). dont miss it
re:creators: I really dont know. every episode is an infodump but weāve got a cool cast of characters, theyāre likeable, and this has tons of potential. IIRC this is the team that did aldnoah:zero so it could go to shit instantly but for now itās solid and has me wanting more. also gunpuku no himegimi <3 design <3
oushitsu kyoushi haine: had no expectations and was not planning to watch, turns out this is top 5 shows this season? itās not fujobait. probably. has a fantastic OP/ED pair, looks consistently Really Good and everyoneās likeable. also if weāre going to bring back chibi this is the way to do it: sparingly, and with really strong visual gags. the one thing I REALLY WANT is more worldbuilding
uchouten kazoku S2: glorious so far. this is even more wild than season 1. if you havenāt heard of uchouten and you have even a passing interest in japanese mythology, comedy, or shapeshifting moms you really should go check it out - everyone is a FUCKER and everything Escalates Very Fast. tenmaya is best waifu of this season though... this fucking old guy... hes perfect
eromanga sensei: call me trash I dont give a shit. this show is pretty good. its definitely weird siscon bullshit but its pretty good regardless. I like to have fun. do you like to have fun?
sakura quest: more like Too Real Feels Quest. if youāre a person in your 20s-30s who has ever struggled with adult life in any way, this is for you. I have no idea how something like this got produced in the current industry climate but itās fuckin great and painful and honest and real. I have a pet theory that Manoyama is Not On Earth as We Know It and that this town is fae folk btw lets see how that plays out
bastard akashic records magical instructor super dangerous dudessss better watch out boyz: likeable just because of how blatantly shitheaded MC is. these character designs... uh... those sure are garter belts... so far this is entertaining and not much else but thatās okay they dont all have to be miracles
soutai sekai: I have no idea why this exists or what can justify this show. Reol why did you get involved in this. youāre so far above trash like this. someone must have offered her serious fucking dosh to associate herself with this. im gonna complete it (its only 2 eps) but this is definitely garbage.
girl beats boys: ever wanted to watch cromartie highschool but with no comedy instead its kind of a weird documentary? turns out I did. this is kind of fun actually! itās so odd I canāt help but admire it
maid dragon specials: ?????????????okay???? if we gotta
kabukibu: Iām a big fan of SHOUTING AWKWARDLY. dropped instantly. dont care if accurate, this is weird and dumb.
frame arms girl: this is where it becomes clear that I have desperately overextended this season and have become WAY too generous with my time when it comes to anime. this was a miscalculation I am regretting. also, this show isnāt good but I guess I can see the appeal. if anything should be an 8-minute-episodes show itās this. probably dropped.
forest fairy five: I got bamboozled by the cover. I canāt make an excuse for my foolishness. It Will Not Happen Again.
high school fleet OVA: this needed to come like six months ago if you wanted to capitalize on this. I dont remember a single one of these characters. sorry lads, its not workin
mahoutsukai OVA 2/3: Yes. show coming in the fall is fucking hype
sin: nanatsu no taizai: I, too, like to get fucked by tentacles. also Miami
sekai no yami zukan:
also currently watching:
kekkai sensen: holy shit dude this is so good. I canāt believe the animation and music quality? how is this not legendary? maybe it gets fucked up down the line but on episode 3 this whole concept is such a solid package I cant see myself not loving it very strongly.
scrapped princess: I sscrappedddd (JOKES!!!) this show a few times bt now that Iām finally giving it a chance I can see that the fight scenes have a surprisingly good quality and end up in cool locations (crystal caves with actual foley work to back it up? and a complete tonal shift in the visuals? sign me the fuck up dude)
older stuff I finished recently:
did I mention girls und panzer last time? probably. this is still great though. I cant get over the fucking Finnish artillery gun scene in the movie jfc this is just soooo good
so ra no wo to: fantastic as a slice of life/military show with musical elements. if you see people comparing this to K-On tell them to fuck off because the only similarity is the time they were released. this isnt a light music club show. probably the best visual style of any show Iāve watched recently - really sets the tone of the show and adds a LOT of otherworldly and mysterious qualities... strong girls... let them be strongth... OP/ED is wonderful too
death parade: looked pretty cool. ended up making me kind of sad and the characters were a bit empty (no Iām not counting the fact that theyāre Puppets as a valid reason for that). more than enough has been written about this show.
upotte: who told me to watch this? who the fuck? Iām gonna find them strangle them. dropped this is for weird gun otaku smeglords
kuzu no honkai: my dick was absolutely raw at the end of this. I was leaning to the side and hunching over slightly for the next 24 hours. people who dont like this have never been challenged by a horrible relationship and/or are repulsed by raw painful emotionally-charged human sexuality (both of these things are fine by the way)
rakugo lovers double suicide (season 1): on the other hand. with regard to human sexuality. time for probably my most controversial opinion ive ever had. this show is GARBAGE. VALUELESS GARBAGE. the characters are absurdly, laughably flat; the entire season is a bait and switch; itās REALLY SLOW and drags for about 2/3 of the season because it only had about 4 episodes worth of actual content; every character motivation makes no sense especially the death scene near the end are you serious? did people really take that seriously? I was so irritated by the fact that this went down like this that I actually had to go away from my computer for a while. this show isnāt gay either, itās the most painfully straight thing and it has no perspective other than that of a straight person who has never experienced anything outside of their sphere of comfort. also FUCK this hoe what is her PROBLEM? go ditch her stupid ass if sheās gonna be like that. sheās an abusive partner who abandoned her child repeatedly and it is absolutely ridiculous that they put up with her presence. theyāre all pretty abusive though so whatever I guess that Ā makes this fine. people who enjoyed this, Iām sorry but you got fucking duped man. this was not written by a fully formed human mind. this was its seasonās Yuri on Ice and is currently hideously overrated. please do not waste your time on this. or do, so you can see how awfully itās written and understand that Most People Are Dumb Idiots With No Taste.
ao oni the animation: please explain why this franchise was ever popular. I do not fucking get it. I really tried. this show came about 6 years too late regardless I cannot justify its existence
gakuen handsome: 2deep4me zaaannkoku no tenshiii no these (evangelion playing in the background my third eye is opening)
yumekui merry: Painful. if this is actually a quality show, my bad but fuck these goddamn cats. I hate anthropomorphic cats with all of my being

Day 48: The wait was totally worth it
Yesterday was a long day, thus I had to wait till the next day to write everything I wanted to about it. Yesterday was also an amazingly fun day, because we went to Universal Studios Japan! In order to catch the first bus of the day, Trisha and I woke up at 5:55am in order to get ready super fast and catch the 6:34am bus. I will admit, despite how much I think I tried, I ended up making us late and we ended up having to run to our bus stop in five minutes.
Luckily we did make it in time and without forgetting anything too important. Slightly dying a bit from running for more then 5 seconds, we took the bus to the train station (bought a quick snack and water from the convenience store) and took the 7:01am limited express train from Hirakatashi to Kyobashi. From Kyobashi we took the Osaka Line directly to Universal City. One thing that was kind of cool on the train was that we saw two girls (maybe twins?) who were dressed up in the same outfit but opposite colors. They both had overalls, a hoodie underneath, and converse. Yet one had black hoodie and black converse with white overalls, and the other had white hoodie and white converse with black overalls. It ended up looking really cool seeing them both together. And twinning clothing was something that we saw all day. Some couples, families, and groups would all be wearing the same (usually very fashionable) outfit. We even saw a couple both wearing the attack on titan survey corp cape.
When we got to Universal City we walked through a collection of restaurants and shops that were not even open yet since it was about 8:00am. The park opens at 8:30am so we got in line for tickets and, $70 later, we were in line to go into the park itself. The first thing we did was go straight to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Now, I have also been to the Harry Potter world in Orlando Universal Studios, but Trisha had never been to it before. But even though I had been, the world building Japan did leading up to the park was really cool. They had an actual forest path that led up to Hogsmeade and had its own little section of the park so that this path was the only way to get there. We started by getting in line for the ride in the castle, a 4K3D ride that was absolutely amazing. Afterwards we almost immediately got into the Flight of the Hippogriff ride, which was just another little rollercoaster.
Since it was getting a little crowded and there was still a lot we wanted to see, we moved on from Harry Potter to go check out Jurassic Park. We were most excited for the flying dinosaur rollercoaster, but accidentally got into the line for Jurassic Park the ride. However, that ride turned out really cool, with the theme music from the movie playing as we encountered cool animatronic dinosaurs through a log-flume like ride. We were a bit worried about getting soaked but we got lucky because our seats were the third row back and we made it out without hardly getting wet (front seat got soaked). After that we went right into the Flying Dinosaur line which had a projected 3 hour wait.
So thatās what we did. Waited for almost three hours for a flying rollercoaster. It was totally worth it. By the time we finally made it to the top and sat in the coaster, I was exhausted. But the moment the seats lifted back so that our arms and head were dangling, able to look directly down, the adrenaline started pumping. It was absolutely amazing. It went up and down and upside down and around. We went in a tunnel and over the water and over a bunch of smiling and waving people down below. After flying dinosaur we got turkey legs from a stall (since we saw everyone with them while we were waiting in line and very hungry), and then made our way over to Neon Genesis Evangelion Ride.
Another 2 and a half hour wait in line brought us to my favorite ride of the day. A ride called Space Fantasy that had been temporarily decked out to be used as a temporary Neon Genesis Evangelion ride (which is an anime I watched a couple years back). It was absolutely incredible because the ride utilized VR technology. Just like any other VR set, we were given one to put on as we sat down in the car and we were set rolling. The VR set was perfectly timed to the coaster so we literally were watching an anime scene all around us that moved perfectly with the indoor coaster itself. I watched a fight scene between mecha aliens while on a roller coaster! Anime characters I know from a show I love doing things right in front of my eyes. When the monster attacked we would veer away from it. It was so cool! Definitely the highlight of the day and if I were to go back to USJ before we left I would totally go on it again.
After getting some merch from the stall afterwards (I got a little cape blanket for warmth with the NERV logo on it and some really awesome keychains), we decided to head back to Harry Potter world since we wanted to eat at the Three Broomsticks. The wait was not nearly as long as I expected, and soon we were seated with our trays of food (pictured below). While we were in Hogsmeade we also bought some chocolate frogs (I got the dumbledore card!) and we went back to Hogwarts to take the castle walk.
However, since dinner didnāt take nearly as long as we thought it would, we ended up having another 3 hours to walk around. With our leftover time we went to go on the Amazing Spiderman ride which was 4D and made excellent use of its effects. Then we caught the Terminator 3D experience which we (obviously) couldnāt understand most of, but it was still really cool because they kept switching in between live action actors and 3D film for really cool effects. Plus the woman who greeted the audience at the beginning of the performance was very expressive and funny (even if we couldnāt understand).
The last thing we did right before closing was check out the Godzilla performance, which was another 3D experience where we were in the perspective of a jet fighter trying to take down Godzilla thatās destroying the city/Universal park. Afterwards we visited the armored titan from attack on titan one last time (and took a few more photos/videos). It was super exciting to see such a huge replica from a show Iāve watched. Overall, everything we did was absolutely amazing but at 9:00 the park closed so we took the two trains and bus back. The rest of the evening was spent doing the Japanese homework I should have done a lot earlier.
