Hi!! I hope it's okay to ask, which university are you/were you attending? I want to study animation in university but i have no idea which one to choose, so can you please tell me about yours?👉👈

I go to CSUF! It’s definitely one of the cheapest places to get a degree in animation in California, if not the US.

Only a handful of the California State schools offer animation, and most of the ones that do are 3D only, and I wanted to learn 2D.

SJSU has a good 2D anim program, and they’re the only state school in the bay area that does, BUT last I checked you need something like a 3.9 GPA to get in?????? like HELLO these are animation students. who are you fooling

the other schools I considered were CSULB and CSUN.

CSULB has a strong animation program! They have the guy that literally created the worldwide 24 Hour Animation Challenge. However, they required ONE extra art history class that none of the other CSUs needed, and I didn’t have it, and I wasn’t about to prolong transferring a whole other semester just to take it. (It was prehistoric art history, I think, which I admit sounds cool as fuck)

The reason I chose CSUF, beyond liking their curriculum better than CSUN, was because I heard about the Pencil Mileage Club. It’s the largest student-run animation club in Southern California. I’d argue that networking is almost more important than your actual skill. I’ll admit, the faculty is probably not doing as much for the students as other schools, but PMC more than makes up for it. I’ve made all my friends (and girlfriend teehee) through this club. I was president of my Art Club at my community college, so it was important to me to be part of PMC’s council. I’m now an event coordinator and so I help organize and run events and studio tours and guest speakers! :)) Clubs and extracurriculars look fantastic on resumes, so wherever you go, look into what’s available.

Things I should note: when you start at CSUF, whether as a freshman or through transferring, you will not be an animation major yet. You have to do the portfolio review first, and you can’t have any of the prerequisite classes in-progress when you apply. The portfolio requirement is only a few years old, too, and therefore it’s not nearly as competitive as, say… calarts or sheridan. I often say, students make the program better, not the other way around. the higher the level of students that apply, the higher the overall education quality will need to be to match that. Though this does mean that the higher quality a program is, the more people will be excluded, unfortunately.

CSUF’s aniamtion program itself is…. a little silly. You take storyboarding and character design after doing your short film ? for some reason? The new department head started at the school the same semester I did, and she’s definitely trying to make it better. She held a screening of the production classes’ finished films, and she told me she plans to have the curriculum restructured by 2025 (after I graduate, lol).

I’ll also mention that the art buildings are in the process of getting demolished and rebuilt. The first wave of new buildings won’t be done until the end of this year, and once that’s finished, they’ll tear down the remaining two buildings and start remodeling those. For now, we do a lot of our classes in the modular buildings jdhshfjs 🫡

We also have a mated pair of gay ducks that come every spring. Their names are Pebble and Rock. They are beloved by the art students.

And really, you don’t NEED a degree in animation to get into the industry. There are SO many online resources out there, a lot that are free, that can give you just as good of an education (in fact, several of my professors’ lectures have just been playing youtube videos and pulling up articles). BUT your classmates WILL be your future coworkers. If you’re not establishing relationships with people in some way on your own, you definitely need to make that bigger priority. After all, you won’t be working by yourself when you’re in the industry.

iterator lineup! i wanted to keep their designs more consistent in my art so i made this as a reference. rambling about more details under the cut bc i love talking about my designs hhehehe

-moon and pebbles have matching cloaks! sibling iterators and their matching outfits my beloved <3

-pebbles' cloak is too big for him, which is why it always slumps off one shoulder and the sleeves often cover his hands. i like to think the ancients made the cloak before pebbles' puppet was completed, because they liked the idea of making it match with moon, but didnt quite get the size right!

-all of their antennae (minus sig of course) are able to rotate forwards and backwards, but only suns can rotate theirs in/outwards as well!

-pebbles and sig both have neon markings that look like top surgery scars because theyre my transmasc kings

-suns has claws and little paw bean markings on their hands

-suns is technically a 2nd gen iterator, only because they're structure was fully completed at the same time other 2nd gen iterators were being constructed. their construction was started in what was still considered the 1st gen

-i imagine iterators eyes are kind of screenlike, so they can optionally project pupils onto them to emote better if they want to! moon and sig do it the most (although moons pupils tend to flicker in and out post-collapse), pebbles mostly does it when he wants to roll his eyes, and suns uses it for intimidation factor and staring unsettlingly /lh

-i didnt include any of them here because im still brainstorming about it a little bit, but i imagine they all have little accessories or trinkets that were sent to them by the other iterators! both before the mass ascension, delivered by proper Ancient messengers, and post mass ascension, delivered by slugcats or similarly modified creatures

-sigs pronouns are he/they but they often use she/her for themself when its funny, or use feminine titles/honorifics just because they like them!

-because i love worm off the string aus a little too much, i thought about what their strengths would each be while designing them too </3 moon is the most robust and can take the most damage before her exterior shell even begins to dent. pebbles is the best shot, and is the fastest when it comes to just straight sprinting across flat ground. sig is the fastest when it comes to bumpier terrain and is the best at climbing and jumping. suns is the best at intimidation factor but also makes very good use of their clawed hands and sharp feet. hes the most skilled at fighting without weapons!

It was a day when someone would get comfortable and take a little nap. 

Too bad humanity went extinct not long ago. 

There are still remnants of what they have left behind. Machines, animals, the earth itself…

It seems like a little machine is sitting on a not-so-little sofa, its wings being preened by an angel. 

And by preening its wings, we mean the machine’s wing blades made out of solid material are being wiped off with a wet towel. 

It was nice, the little machine thought. It was never given such treatment ever since it was declared scrapped. Or… ever, really. 

V1 cannot feel the towel from its wings. Okay, maybe that’s a lie. It can feel things from its wings, but right now, it disabled that part because it registers all touch as danger. 

After all, that is where it stores its weapons. That is how it stabilizes itself whenever it dashes. It cannot fly with them—not like its beloved, at least—but that doesn’t mean they are completely useless. 

In other words, the wings are an integral part of itself. 

As a result, V1 rarely lets others touch its wings. Partly because of the aforementioned programmed instinct to flinch from even the gentlest of touches, partly because it doesn’t trust anybody to destroy its wings in its most vulnerable. 

Which makes it all the more telling when V1 lets Gabriel wipe them with a towel, cleaning them off some blood it couldn’t absorb anymore. 

“Uh, V1?” Gabriel asked. “How do your wings store your weapons?”

V1 shrugged. Just because it was a creation doesn’t mean it knows how it was created to the tiniest detail. 

“Oh…” Gabriel said, deflated. 

V1 looked behind him and saw that Gabriel was touching the top right blade. The one they’re storing a couple of objects that are… not designed to be weapons in the slightest. 

It’s just a couple of charms, pebbles and trinkets they’ve picked up during their travels. There’s even a plush toy of itself for some reason. V1 does not know why it exists at all, in Hell nonetheless, but it’s there, stuffed inside its wing. 

“Can I… put things inside?” Gabriel asked. 

V1 nodded. It then raises a hand and tilts its head.

“No no,” Gabriel said. “I mean can I put things in your wings directly?” he clarified. 

Oh. 

V1 nodded. That can be arranged. 

It flipped a setting in its software. It then gave Gabriel the thumbs up. 

“…that’s it?” Gabriel asked, confused. “It… doesn’t look like anything changed.”

V1 turned its body towards Gabriel. “Trust me,” it signed. 

Gabriel looked at V1, then the towel. He then sighed and tried to put the towel in the orange wings, only to…

…

He seemed to be frozen in place, seeing his hand phasing through V1’s solid-looking wings. 

Slowly, he moved his hand away from the wings, watching in awe as he effortlessly removed himself from it. 

The towel is gone. It seems to be inside that wing now. 

V1 flaps its wings slightly. Its sign of excitement. “Liking it?”

Gabriel laughed softly. He seems to be excited about this new feature. 

“Do you think you could fit my swords inside?” Gabriel asked. 

V1 nodded. Its wings can contain things bigger than them as long as they can fit through the wings themselves. 

“Well? What are we waiting for?” Gabriel asked, now getting excited about this prospect as V1 was. 

And so, the two of them tried to fit a bunch of objects inside V1’s wing blades, cleaning them all forgotten. 

Besides, they’re all clean already. Gabriel’s practically done at that point. 

They ended up fitting way more objects than they expected. Removed a lot of stuff too. 

They had fun. Gabriel seems happy.

Despite the circumstances of his construction, I like to imagine that Pebbles was made as a labor of love alongside the necessity. Pebbles had so much effort put into him, small facets of his design taken from beloved parts of iterators from past generations (him and Sliver being the only ones in my group with earrings is on purpose).

Despite how much opposition and hatred was thrown his way by religious movements, he was loved by so many. For more than just the needs he met

since i downloaded a shitton of region mods and got to retread some + added some more for my annual replay and got done with them all, gonna briefly list them and share some opinions!

-overall general flaw i do have with some is length. while cool to see such developed regions, some are longer than i think they should be. makes sense if they have multiple connecting areas (a “central hub” of sorts), but for straight shots idk feels like a lot of padding as good as the regions are.

-stormy coast: an example of the aforementioned length problem but man is it a wonderfully unique concept. love how it changes based on campaign and it is fun to explore! i want more regions that play into how the rain functions.

-coral caves: ooog so pretty!!! kinda weird to explore as saint due to how some paths are blocked off, and there’s a very evil echo location, but overall a pleasant time :)

-hanging gardens/preservatory: actually peak i’m obsessed with the latter and want more content for it holy shit???? definitely gives off the vibe playing vanilla rw has, especially in the endings. do wish there was a break point shelter midway through preservatory but i understand why not. just a lil difficult if trying to bring back the pearl, especially since there’s a guaranteed red lizard spawn in all campaigns. for hanging gardens proper, my only gripes are wonky shelter layouts and a couple kinda bullshit jumps.

-lush mire: the only one i didn’t like. absolutely gorgeous don’t get me wrong but insanely buggy and confusing to traverse. idk what interferes with it but music never plays, there’s an infinite loading screen issue, and the game crashes when sheltering. i’m sure it’s good to some and there was a lot of effort put in, yet for me, no matter how many times i did try and give it a go, it never ends up being a pleasant experience.

-pilgrim’s ascent: wonderful concept, good execution, not much to say.

-scorched district: it connects to metropolis :) another really needlessly convoluted region but otherwise a fun time! i like exploring atop pebble’s can……….

-far shore: stormy coast minus the weather, so a lot like spearmaster/arti’s iteration. same stuff down to critiques, but i love the volcano. really gorgeous and interesting set pieces here!

-mossy fields: WAHHHH SO PRETTY!!!! idk not much to say about it either but it is a lovely little experience. noodle eater my beloved.

-eventide: genuinely amazingly impressive. found this one via the trailer on youtube and turns out according to the creator’s yt bio they’re 14???? dunno if this is their first time making a region or not but they did super well. i need more truly eye candy locations. only issue is the music that plays because it’s uh. poorly mixed and kinda grating. if the ost was made by the modder i do have to give them props for trying. wish some rooms had a bit more space too. one of my favorites for sure, and i think it’s cool how much rw has influenced younger modders to try their hand! can’t wait to see how the creator’s skill evolves if they end up making more!

-steaming edifice: we need more fun regions. just ones with interesting gimmicks and minimal lore. the baby lizards are adorable too! there’s a couple bullshit jumps here and there but otherwise some of the most enjoyable platforming in any of these.

-fog gulch: oughhhh the atmosphere is on point and kudos to the track that’s just fart reverb and dog barks(?) it’s beautiful. some item textures need some better shading, and the amount of creatures that cause explosions is a bit annoying. the maraca spiders are especially egregious due to how numerous they are. definitely goes on a bit too long, but on a visual and conceptual level (plus the fog vultures), it nails it.

-forsaken station: i don’t have every area mod installed that connects but i love the aesthetic and design. pleasant to go through despite how confusing the map gets.

Second of oh boy I hope you were asking for headcanons!! if not.. uh.. Anyhow im gonna talk abit about some iteratormodel thoughts!! Im gonna use this totally legit reference here to you know, viszualize.

Keep in mind this is all just my own thoughts!

So to get started I like to seperate iterators into older models v newer models - older being ones before anchients lived on top of them and the newer ones post ancheints - which reflects how their built. Older ones like moon are for one, well.. older, older tech and older materials, their clunkier and larger, think the teddybear phones. Second, their made to be low maintence, their built somewhere and then they will just chug along till they solve The Great problem. They generally more durable, hide all inner wiring and machinery with plates, all delicate things like hands are also covered. In short their more machines and tools than anything else.

The newer models in contrast like pebbles are more like our modern smartphones: lighter, sleeker, more functions and also shit quality, which is why pebbles got a much sleeker and thinner look. And besides the fact that tech evolves and develops this also ties into how their created (possibly? not sure if its actully canon who knows) when the ancheints are in closer proximity to the iterators, - think how pebbles entrence is bascily right by artificers entrence to pebbles city - their now not only machines, their something closer to art(?) their something to show off ( i have some deranged thoughts about iterator manifacturing and capatlism but lets not get into that) and they are now something not just a machine, working somewhere unseen, they are now objects you can see, so they need a "cooler" look. ( think like those transparent gameconsols)

-- also side note i read a like comment somewhere talking about iterators and ancheints beautystandards which oh boy, feral. and i like to think that shows in pebbles and the newer models design much more than older ones, the whole thin gangly monk look and tiny feet (ancheint bound their cool birdfeet) and a more elaborate design. I always found it curious that iterators dont wear masks but i guess there is a distance, i mean its funny that the people who wanted death most of all created something that couldnt die, - also it implies some iterators killed themself which oh boy - anyhow i also have a lot of thoughts of iterators using wires as hairdoes but this tangent is getting long so i stop.--

so to come to somewhat of an end, moons definitely just gonna chug along till the world ends if needed while pebbles probably started cracking his shell and wires like half a century after maintence stopped, boys not made to last in that way, aestetics over function if you will. also no this is not an elaborate way to explain why moon is just bigger ( i like drawing soft squares, sue me) and let me tell you it felt very fucked up to draw naked pebbles. Now i think i talked to long but again if you read this long thanks for the ask!!! I hope I answered nothing!!

[Full text: I’ll be honest here, I was so hyperfixated on the idea of an Aoba/Madoka Kaname (from Puella Magi Madoka Magica) crossover being both like siblings (like the entire whole older brother shtick where he has like a clumsy, insecure younger sister who’s secretly a girlboss deep down, who literally turned into a god in the Rebellion film).

Plus, their colour palettes/designs, schemes and all are adjacent to the Gumball/Anais (from The Amazing World of Gumball) colour palette scheme, meaning they would resemble them a bit. Their interactions would be really sweet together as I know Aoba would have this small, pink-haired fluffball of hope consistently follow him everywhere Aoba goes, and would try to get him to as he goes to Junk Shop Heibon to complete his daily working shift while Madoka just goes to school like an ordinary schoolgirl just the way she is.

Aoba sometimes comes home and buys Madoka a lesbian flag she can hang up on her wall, and makes dinner for her a lot. She introduces her girlfriend Homura to Aoba and he’s like “aww, that’s sweet.” I feel like he’d grow accustomed and fond to her, and I feel like he’d grow an ever-loving desire to protect her from falling into despair so much so that she turns into a witch.

One of the funniest things I can imagine Aoba doing is having one of his alters (Sly Blue for example), fronting and then she gets a call from him and he takes her on a little ride while Madoka brings Homura, her beloved, with her to the retail park that is extremely far away from both of their locations. He then lets them play on one of those Beatmania arcades, and he goes to the cigarette bar to get a quick smoke and to accompany his younger sister and his girlfriend, and they both win so much on the Pop'n Music arcades while they start to finish off and get ready for the bowling venues.

Sly sits on one of these chairs and watches his younger sister Madoka and her girlfriend go off at these bowls, and claps and cheers when Madoka manages to succeed at taking one of these bowling pins all in one go. And after that, Sly fronts back to Aoba, the main host of the system, and then he calls back for them to come back so they can go in there to explore the garden, town pebble streets and more amusement parks for their own excitement, so they can have pretty picture taking time.

I can imagine Aoba loving Madoka like he’s his own daughter and doing Madoka’s hairstyles every morning like crazy while on the phone trying to listen some deals that Haga-san made to him, putting small ribbon hair clips in Madoka’s hair, and making her breakfast and making sure she’s at least well fed and happy.

I want her to be happy after the shit she has gone through. My precious baby daughter. My daughter, she didn’t deserve all of this, she deserves to be all happy and to be all pain and trauma free. It’s not a matter of comparing “yaoi vs yuri” of which series is pure or fucked up or whatever. I’m not simply here to compare them. I’m here to illustrate my point cohesively that Madoka would view this mentally ill skinny 23 year old gay boy who has had a never had a good day ever in his life, and she would go “I’m going to view that man as my older brother. He seems nice.” and tries to hang around with him to try to get more information from this gay boy who has a shit ton of unresolved BPD that would end up with him being sent to a mental asylum. It’s about the potential, it’s about the silly sibling shenanigans of Madoka trying to wake her older brother up so he can take her to school. It’s him seeing that she is going down a dark path full of magical girls. Whatever. I am so mentally ill about them. Madoka Magica changed my brain fundamentally and mentally and I needed to thus propose this like crossover even further because I want to say it out loud.]

Hi, thanks for the questions!

Altheia couldn't pin down just one favourite thing about Julian, but if she had to pick, it would be how free and expressive he is, that he wears his heart on his sleeve and has few inhibitions (even though that isn't always a good thing). Also, how attentive he is to what other people need and want. Physically - his hands, how elegant and long they are. He's so expressive with his hands when he talks that she finds herself distracted looking at them and not paying attention to what he's saying.

Hobbies - beachcombing and adding to her collections of seashells, old coins, sea glass and pretty pebbles. She makes little animals out of tiny shells and beads.

Favourite food - scones with jam, and cream if she's feeling fancy.

Of the rest of the M6, she's closest to Asra. Nothing romantic ever happened between them, but she mentored him for a few years before the plague hit, and then of course they lived together after he resurrected her. Once the truth about everything came out, it took her a while to process everything and she, Asra and Julian took a bit of time to work through it all, but once at the other side of that, Asra will always be her closest friend.

The Trials and Tribulations of the Jebble Sculpture

Once upon a six hours ago, I had a dream. It was a dream of creativity, of beauty, and of my beloved insane jester. It was a dream of cherishing him, a wish to hold him in my hands.

I didn't yet have access to getting my grubby mitts on an official Jebble talking plush, but what I did have was clay.

My first attempt begun smoothly. I had forgotten at the time that I owned oven-bake Sculpey polymer clay, and as such I used the more obscure Sculpey air-dry clay for my creation. I worked slowly, tediously carving each and every silly detail into his goofy round face, delicately attaching the pupils to his eyes and the ears to his head.

Working slowly was my mistake.

As I soon realized the fate to befall him, I began to panic, hastily kneading bits and pieces of clay in an attempt to finish forming him before he became too solid to work with. My efforts were for naught; in fact, in my rush to put on his features, he began falling apart, his features now messy and his body covered with divots from my nails. It was too late for him. There was nothing within my abilities that I could do to save him.

Thus, I had to make the difficult choice to abandon him. He sat on my dresser overnight and, in the morning, was as hard as plastic. His strained expression demonstrates his eternal misery, having to live with a half-finished body, wearing a half-finished outfit, covered in dirt and cat hair from the stickiness of the clay, but alas, there was nothing to be done.

This is how Pebble was born.

I wasn't satisfied with the outcome of my efforts. All this time spent on a dud, and for what? To leave him to sit barely right of my keyboard, forever gazing into my soul?

No. I had to try again.

That moment was when I realized how to do Jebble justice. I dug through my drawers, moving aside long forgotten craft books and papers, and pulled out my old box of Sculpey oven-bake clay.

When I say old, I mean old. I'd had this clay since four, maybe five Christmases ago, and that didn't make working with the already tough material any easier on my hands. It was dense, crumbly, and disheveled.

By some miracle from Toby Fox himself, I managed to make it work. Using the same original formula I had for Pebble, albeit at a slightly larger scale, I began sculpting. Two balls, one on top of the other.

The further I progressed, the more hopeful I became, but I tried to keep my expectations low. I hadn't sculpted anything since I was eleven, and most of my memories of it were the sadness that accompanied my beautiful pieces breaking.

And yet, I couldn't help but think he was turning out splendidly for my first time in so long. Even if his gums looked unnatural, and he had no bottom teeth, and he was currently little more than a slightly detailed head atop a sphere, he was beautiful. Surely nothing could go wrong...

I worked on him more and more throughout the evening as I binge watched Matt Rose and Jeaney Collects videos, often looking back at his ingame sprite for reference. He wasn't perfectly accurate, quite stylized in fact, but what did it matter? I loved him all the same.

It was here I realized I would have to make some further stylistic changes to his design, both for his own safety and for my own convenience. I knew from my own experiences that Sculpey's oven-bake clay could be fragile, especially without glaze (which I didn't have) or an internal wireframe (I did have crafting wire, but nothing to cut it with, so he unfortunately went without any). If I wanted to keep him for longer than a month in a house with my clumsy self and a cat who loves to knock things over, he would have to be optimized.

So, such changes were made. I decided to skip out on giving him arms, for the amusing rotund aesthetic it provided and to minimize the parts on him that could break. His legs would be simplified and his body would simply be placed directly atop his shoes. Black paint would be used to add the illusion of shorts. His tail would be made short and thick, curled closely to his body so nothing poked out too much. His ears and the bells of his hat were his only particular weak spots, but they looked nice as they were and couldn't be modified too much without rendering them unrecognizable.

He was still fugly, but it was a start.

I then would hit another roadblock: his collar. At first, it's quite difficult to distinguish just what it is based on looking at his sprite, and his other official depictions don't make it any easier; on the official Jebble plush, he dons the typical scrunchie-like poofy collar, but on the rest of the merchandise, including shirts and posters, it's more flower-shaped, for lack of a better word.

Personally, I am on the side of Jebble fanartists who portray him with the former, but I was quick to choose the latter for my sculpture for the sake of my own sanity; delicately folding all those ruffles would have been painful, and making and attaching a bunch of little triangles was infinitely easier.

Thus, this was his final design. Simple, skrunkly, and round.

Here's him fresh out of the oven, lightly toasted and ready to eat paint.

Getting paint to match his colors was quite an experience, helping me to remember just how blue he is canonically, despite how often he is depicted as purple. I, too, am guilty of making his blues warmer than they are, but what can a guy do? It looks good with the yellow and green.

Regardless, I wanted to stick to the canon colors for him, so I dug up my old bag of paints and mixed them up. Painting him went quite smoothly, and he was almost finished, but then...

One minute, I was holding him with confidence, taking care not to touch any of his still-wet paint as I added slightly darker shades of blue to his face.

The next, he had fallen face-first onto my desk with a loud thud.

My heart was broken, and yet it was still racing in my chest as I internally hoped that nothing had fallen off of him, that none of his paint had been smudged in my panic to pick him up, but even then I knew hoping was worthless. In this horrific accident, he had lost a good chunk of his right ear and one of the bells from his hat. How could I let this happen to him? How could I let my confidence do this to my beloved boy?

I didn't have glue to repair him, and for a moment I sat there on the brink of tears. All of my efforts really were for nothing after all. I'd might as well hit him with a hammer so he wouldn't have to suffer the same fate as Pebble.

Somehow, through the fog of desperation and sorrow, an idea came to my mind. I still had the pieces that had broken off, and maybe, just maybe, I could reattach them with the air-dry clay.

I stuck small blobs of it to the places that had broken and squished them tightly together, then smoothed out the edges to somewhat blend it in with the rest of the clay.

Thank the stars it (mostly) worked. The bell that had fallen off was too small to reattach, and had to be remade entirely from the air-dry clay, but it worked. He was fixed.

Recovery was a longer journey for him than it was for me, but thankfully he had his beloved hubby and weird brother to comfort him in these trying times.

He even got to wear Spamton's jacket, which was somehow simultaneously too big and too small for him, and he wound up looking like he was T-posing.

But after all this, once his repairs were dry, I repainted him and he was finally finished.
