Kids today. This morning my mom took my lil bro to an English class. It was, according to my mum, was a conventional in-house class (if you get familiar with tutor teachers then u can imagine), and by “conventional” she meant extremely crowded, stuffed with elementary students whose eyes sparkled with innocent joy and the respected obedience we long lost. They were sitting side by side each other with such a humble proximity that they could barely feel the cool breeze of the electronic fan above them. Then, after a friendly cosy welcoming, the tutor, Mr. Minh, gave my lil bro, what seemed to be an entrance test.
As my prediction, he failed.
A brief glimpse at the test. There were 2 parts of it: science and writing. The first was a 3 page long paper with a total of 8 questions related to history, geography, math, and literature. I was kind of flipping thru the writing, so little did i can tell much about that. But the tricky part was the whole test was designed for 5th-grade students wishing to enter Tran Dai Nghia Highschool (a prestige secondary/high school). That meant it was for the elite. And my bro was nowhere near to the definition of it. So i kind of made myself at peace with this saddening results.
But then I took a closer look at the test. Guys, those kids who could finish this, were no joke... I mean they were the real genius.
To make myself clear, students who finish this ridiculously advanced exam, are required to get themselves familiar with “the structure”, including a high level of critical thinking and information-reflecting skills. I mean questions are not packed with easy guessing answers. Those kids gotta really use all brains and senses to get through. Plus, English format would be a hard-beaten challenge. I am not aware how kids these days have excelled a wide grammar and vocab range at such an age! I wonder how many time they forfeit their favourite tv channels or football match to study the shit out. Or how many pressure and anxiety they gotta bear every single day. At such an age.
Come to think of it. I am baffled. Really. I would love to have my bro all intelligent and smart. But if it turns out as a tragedy as forcing him to abandon his drawing hobby or missing his taekwondo classes, or let go the enjoying part of being a kid, that is carefree does what he loves, then the elite experience is not that worth it. At all.
