God bless you and your posts! I'm super=>happy there are still people like you who can freely talk about the retro eroge stuff without the need to deny all of it's mighty aspects someone is afraid about🙏
If you could give a top 5 games for those looking to get into the PC-98 genre, what titles would you include?👀
omg HIIII!! thank you for popping by (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧ yay, this is a passionate hobby of mine and to look away from any of it-- the good, the bad, or the ugly-- would cause it to lose some dimension. Eroge is made by people and people are messy. (‾◡◝) So thank you for understanding that. Ahh, I feel like I'm not qualified somehow... I've played a lot on the pc98 as theres plenty of short (very stupid, very goofy) games, and I have a habit of skipping the greats in chase of random things that I think looks cool. I'll try to compose a list anyhow. Folks reading this, these are adult games with adult content, and a lot of it is "anything goes!!" Rarely do they surpass the wildness of modern day eroge (some are rather tame), but warning still stands!!
💎Toushin Toushi

A classic Alicesoft game with an english patch. Play as a swordsman who enters a tournament... and then things fly off the rails in the last quarter. Its one of those top-down RPGs so if you're an ancient gamer you'll be right at home, but be sure to get the Happiness Bell for a boost of EXP or you'll be grindin' all day and night! It's a cute, quaint (until the end) game with a good sense of humor and a few surprisingly tender moments. It was one of the first pc98 games I'd ever played, and it helped me form my thoughts on the medium. At several points you are presented the choice to be an evil creep or respect other's consent and for being a creep you get punished by the game mechanics. Not enough to really make a huge difference but the fact that its even there gives you something to think about. In the end, it's a game about consent. The sequel game has reached legendary status and you can go ahead and play that one instead, but I still find some enjoyment with this old crusty thing.
💉Amy's Fantasies

This is one of those OFFICIALLY english translated eroge with a pumped up to the max ridiculous Himeya Soft scripts that you can play RIGHT NOW USING THE INTERNET LETS FREAKING GOOOO!!! It's so. It's. Well. Dare I say it's the most pc98 pc98 game to ever pc98 on the pc98? Nonsensical balls-to-wall stupidity, outrageous ero, is that guy her brother, her step brother, her half brother, a clone, what is he, the characters don't even know. There's a chapter where they go to the Ass Hospital for Butts. There's a bajillion ashita no joe references for some reason. The suspicious looking mansion burns down, because "all suspicious looking mansions burn down". It's one of those "anything goes" type beats, so please keep that in mind. But when I think of the pc98, this is the first thing I think of.
🌼Doukyuusei 2

The first entry (which has an en tl of the amazing remake) is already one of my favorite games ever. But this? It somehow surpassed it. The story goes deeper, the characters hit harder, and the art is MWAH! Because the focus is more on the pure(-ish) romance this time around, there's less of a scummy perv feel than the first game (I need to make clear the scummy perv feel was why the first game was good, btw. It's 90's schlock at it's finest. The protag has ruined all other pc98 schlock protags forever, woe is me, he's just too amazing). This is one of those "must play" games even if you're not into eroge. The exploration system and relationship mechanics are what set the stage for future dating sims like Sakura Taisen, Tokimeki Memorial, and countless others. Ah, it's just too good. Youko is my wife. If you wait a little while longer, I'm sure the remake will be getting an english translation as well.
⚔ AmbivalenZ

I admit I haven't finished this one yet at the time of writing this, but I doubt there is anything that will sway my opinion of it now. It's PEAK CHUUNIGE, HYPER VIOLENT PURE LOVE DEMONIC REINCARNATION ACTION. Play as a badass immortal knight whose true love's soul was shattered centuries ago on a quest to fight a sexy demon lady with a blood sword. There's an ensemble cast of bold, lovable characters and a compelling story to boot, just talking about it makes me excited! After playing Diabolique and falling down the rabbit hole I have come to be a bit of a Tori fanboy. She's very good at hurt and comfort. The exploration system is the slightly frustrating oldskool Alicesoft affair but it's not enough to ruin the experience. I would recommend this edgy, bloody, quirky yet pure hearted story to just about anyone.
🌔Kurayami

This is a very short game about getting trapped in an elevator on Christmas Eve with one of three different girls, all named Mari and all written different ways. The game is meant to be replayed several times over with your choices drastically changing the scenario. The story can be a relaxed romance, a sentimental tragedy, or it can even get a little spooky. It's a game that's creative with the resources it has. The song, 17 year old Farewell, is probably one of my favorites on the whole system. There is supposedly and english translation in the works but it's been in limbo for a long time now.
~~~ Aaaaand that about does it, I think. Again, i feel like I'm not a good source for this thing but these are the games that I would pick. I hope you find something you like. I feel like a playthrough of Amy's fantasies with some beer and very open-minded friends would be a fun way to spend a night. ☆⌒(*^-゜)v
that and sometimes ppl for some reason expect TL notes explain more than just puns or hard to translate phrases or words, and want notes to stuff like references and shout outs to other media, XYZ scientific theory, or historical event, but when creators make those references they're usually not expecting EVERYBODY to get them lol, they're treats for the smarty pants or other nerds.
like i dont think precure expects its audience of 3 year olds to get an ashita no joe death parody
and i dont think that any child ever really knew what the FUCK was going on in veggietales to be quite honest 😭
#Are you telling me Char broiled this burger?#veggietales just has so many weird and obscure references for no reason its so funny
The Komi Report - Communication 440
This week in Komi Can't Communicate:
Moe Ashitano puts on her socks....
...and two mangaka reach an understanding
Read It: Mangareader Mangakakalot Viz Media (North America Exclusive) Mangadex (English updates are dead, but there’s the backlog; and Spanish language updates)
weh.... no continuation of the group discussion this week. Once again we are going on an unrelated tangent; but one must school oneself in patience. Let's appreciate this chapter on it's own terms together 💪
It shouldn't surprise me any more when a character unexpectedly returns, but I'd wager that many people had completely forgotten about this girl - she doesn't even have an entry on the Komi fandom wiki.
Here she is appearing for the first time in Ch. 258 - Contact Info as a late addition to Komi's second year class. Until this week she had one, maaaaaybe two other appearances. Every dog has her day, and today is Ashitano's.
Girl I think you have some sort of disability or perhaps a chronic illness. You should talk to a doctor.
Fun fact - her name is derived from the title of a 1968-1973 boxing manga called Ashita no Joe. And the way she burns out is a visual reference:
(Ashita no Joe, Volume 20)
Her father appears to be another visual reference to the titular Joe Yabuki. Oda loves doing references like this (I enjoy it also). With that background information established I will render my opinion - she's alright. Her appearance in this chapter is amusing, if not particularly interesting.
What I love about this chapter is the other section....
My girl!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I thought at first that the Viz Media folks had misspelled 'catharsis', but now I know that 'catharses' is the plural form; meaning multiple instances of catharsis. I am learning so much from this chapter aklksjdnlasndlaknsdlkasd
It's really sweet to see the positive effect Komi has on the people around her - simply by reaching out to people and forming a connection, she inspires further connections and bonds within her community. It's so emoi (❁´◡`❁) and it's exactly how Tadano helped Komi in the beginning; by making that first move and reaching out.
We learned in Emoyama's arc that she didn't have any friends... now she's bring her manga club together (TwT) and soon enough she'll be gay with Sukida (wishful thinking)
Himejoshi 🤝Fujoshi solidarity. I had to put that whole moment here because it's so beautiful to me. Putting aside the questionable habit those two have of writing romance manga about real people, I love this wholesome manga club action. I want a dozen side chapters about these three. I want a spin off.
Emoyama is the salve that has healed the division between a hardcore Girls Love enjoyer and a hardcore Boys Love enjoyer....
Also, of course Sukida witnessed Komorebi and Susumi in the park askdnlaksdnlasd. She has a spidey-sense for yuri.....
Well! That's all there is to say about Ch. 440!! The manga club is the clear standout and I love it very much. Ashitano sent me down a fun little pathway looking into Ashita no Joe so I liked that, too. Hopefully next week we'll get to continue the group discussion.
Until then, stay safe!!
I'll delete this later because I know it's a terrible idea to share pages like this but I found this funny (slightly nsfw)
1. Writing 'what the fuck?' Like a dying message
2. Staggering past it
3. The Ashita no Joe reference but on a toilet
4. This may seem like he's shocked to get a boner over a guy but he's known he's gay for ages; he's just shocked that he now finds his beloathed love rival sexy 🤣 I'm a huge fan of love rivals turned lovers so I enjoyed this one.
Honey Lemon Soda Episode 6 Review - Culture Festival At 2x Speed
Last time I checked, I was watching a shoujo romance anime and not a rollercoaster at an amusement park. Why is this episode so fast? It’s legit speed-running. On top of that, it’s ugly as heck. Why am I watching a PNG slideshow?
This episode is basically Uka doing her best so that her class can have a good Cultural Festival. Her class is doing a maid cafe and she’s basically doing everything from preparation to set up so she’s essentially the leader. It’s nice that everyone in the class starts helping out bit by bit and by the end, we see male and female students riding bikes with cardboards attached at the back. Fortunately, the maid cafe seems to be a hit! Uka also gets into a maid outfit and also gets an Ashita no Joe meme plastered onto her as she also got a Dragon Ball one earlier—this episode is crawling with memes as you can also see an Urusei Yatsura reference somewhere in the preparation segments.
Also, another point of note in this episode is that Uka might think she’s being too dependent on Kai and is trying her best not to be. Instead of focusing on her crush, she’s working hard to make the cafe a success. It’s nice that she is aware of her co-dependency on Kai and is trying to get out of it, but it’s sort of hard to do so when she has a crush on him. It also doesn’t help that there are mean girls wondering if Uka will separate from Kai once she found her footing as Kai presented himself as being in charge of her.
Kai, on the other hand, is still a bit aloof, but I do think he does like her, but he’s only being subtle about it and not too obvious. The way he told Takamine about how he is ‘taking back’ what he said about Uka earlier, so I’m assuming he’s going to be more honest with his feelings and not be on a tightrope?
To be honest, while this entire episode is ugly in presentation, I do admit that the festival is really good when it comes to the vibes. It does look like a huge event and has that festival vibes. It does feel as if it’s worth to come to! That’s all for now. Let me know your thoughts on this episode!
Astro Note
アストロノオト
(Anime)
Sci-fi Romcom by Shochiku KK
Era: 2020s
Rating: B
Plot: Takumi is a chef in in search for a job and finds an opening at Astro-Sou, a boarding house, where he meets Mira, the charming manager, and after seeing the culinary horrors she has put the residents through, decides to take the job, even if it's not what he expected from the job posting. Neither is Mira.
Length: 12 episodes
Thoughts: Don't do a drinking game on finding Maison Ikkoku references in the first episode or you'll be knocked out pretty quickly. The cute manager with a white dog the other main character has some misunderstanding over being a widow or not and finding her dangling from the roof, the room 5 where our protagonist ends up living, the eccentric co-inhabitants (but not THAT eccentric, I don't think Takumi could handle living between Akemi and Yatsuya), and it finds space to give each of those eccentrics a bit more of a backstory to them - the Wakabayashi father and son relationship, the Idol Teruko, and even throws in a ghost story at that. Shokichi, the oldest resident is mostly used as a link between Mira and previous manager Tasuke, but at the end he gets a big send off (and a Ashita no Joe Dezaki postcard). While it's Maison Ikkoku that got the most attention, this really wants to be a Showa era anime at heart, and I'm fine with it. The overall message of the show is one that is often found in many other shows - don't be constrained by what is expected of you, be it a galactic princess who'd rather clean leaves off the gutter, a local idol who's still at it in her 30s because she loves being in stage or a boy who wants to wear frilly skirts. It also does the usual love triangle things, however it feels like it's not committing too heavily to tell you things aren't going to end exactly where you expect. Narratively, it feels pretty balanced with the time it is given, if rushed at the end.
A big point of contention was the art style - it really goes for that kind of Showa era retro look but with modern production. It results in something very unique for a modern anime and kind of wish more tried this approach, although I feel it works so well here because once again this is an old show at heart. The ending really sends that home, throwing a super robot at it, something that is currently only running on nostalgia fumes from that era.
Recommended to: Have you ever imagined if Maison Ikkoku involved aliens? No, not like Urusei Yatsura.
Plus:
It gets a lot of the vintage vibe it aims for right, from the OP by Ai Furihata (who voices the indie idol Teruko, has a knack for doing 80s inspired pop) and character design, including how they can have any type of face it needs at the time, model be damned.
It goes full on the background art, and it has a very colourful look to it.
First episode really reminds you of Maison Ikkoku (if you need to be reminded)
Minus:
Also reminds you that you could be reading Maison Ikkoku again instead.
Creed III just did an Ashita no Joe reference unintentionally. Pretty sure MBJ stated that his references include Dragon Ball, Naruto, Megalo Box, and Hajime no Ippo. What I am saying is, go read or watch Ashita no Joe. It's peak boxing manga/anime.
Also, cross counter is such a cool move. Fist pump the air when I first saw it executed in the manga.
