hi, don't really know about your rules so feel free to ignore this! I was wondering if you could do how yan!merman! Kaiser would be with his darling, how does he act, interact, etc. (maybe a little bit suggestive if you can?) have a lovely day!
part of your world

fairy tales are merely short yet magical stories mothers tell to their children to help fall asleep quickly. such stories typically feature mythical enchantments and fanciful beings, never meant to believe in. but what happens when the line between real and not blurs?
just like a blue rose, they are only works of imagination, a good work of fantasy yet it's mysterious allure is what makes it unattainable. what happens when the impossible becomes possible?
michael kaiser is the merman every mermaid mother want their daughters to marry because of his good looks, excellent controlling nature and many more. however, be that the case, he's not the least interested in mermaids.
he craved for something that could challenge him, someone who is beyond his reach. have them be a part of his world.
the day he decided to admire another world by the shore is the day he caught sight of your wandering figure, crouching down on the sand, one bucket in hand while the other picked up sea shells and colorful sea stones.
he knew that humans and mermaids aren't supposed to come into contact together, to remain their kind a secret but the sight of you oh so carefree, beautiful and enchanting had him speechless. his heart fluttered, something he never thought he could experience until now.
you who is a refreshing and mesmerizing view. you who is exactly beyond his reach. either way, he'll make you submit to him.
he spent the rest of the mornings watching and observing you, when you wouldn't collect shells and stones, you'd take a walk all by yourself or build sand castles. and as each day passed, he didn't cared if he could expose his kind, he wanted to have you.
"if you want a variety, i can help you with that."
"ah!"
slowly, kaiser treads through the water to come closer to you, his eyes never leaving your figure.
"do you not get lonely too?" he asks, finally stopping right in front of you, upper half of his body exposed to you.
you gave him a small smile, tucking a strand of your hair behind your ear. "why would i be lonely?"
"i always see you every day and at the same time, all by yourself." he tells you, excitement rushing through him as he is finally talking to you.
"so you've been watching me." you respond, slowly sitting down on top of the golden sandy shores. "i'm not lonely anymore, i have you now."
his eyes widened at the response you gave him. heart thumping wildly as if it would burst out of his chest. a human acknowledging his presence. that response alone had him fallen completely in love with you.
"in what grounds do you think i could be a good company to you?" he asks, an impressive grin painting his lips.
"i just know" you reply, smiling to him.
oh how you wish you could take those words back. the words you gave to the very first you meet him, the words you wish you knew what it would mean to him.
you're now in the palm of his hand; finest pearls weaved into a necklace or earring, abundant sea shells enclosed around a large clam shell, miscellaneous trinkets that can only be found in the deepest crevices of the sea are now in your rightful possession.
no other person on land has these finer treasures apart from you. such luster, shape and consistency would have heads turning to look your way.
"there's no need for you to go back to that world, darling." he'd whisper into your ear as the two of you watch the sunset, his arms wrapped around your colorless figure. "the sea will welcome you with open arms."
"you'll love it when you're a hundred feet deep, i'll be your guide getting in, i won't let you drown. you trust me, right?" he asks, whispering in your ear as his fingers held your chin, turning your head to look at him.
trusting him is your choice. but it's kaiser that used that choice into something cynical.
shifting positions to have you seated on top of his waist, he pushes your bodies and kaiser had never felt so pleased with the skin to skin contact. admiring your figure clad in a yellow bikini, a sight he'll always remember even with eyes closed.
and not a moment too soon, he finally press his lips on yours. kissing you deeply and passionately; one hand cupped around your left cheek and the other on your waist, slipping between your legs. squeezing your warm pussy before rubbing your clit, tongues intertwining and dancing.
abandoning his common sense, his arms gripped around your figure, diving down into the water but with you this time.

No that @jilytoberfest revealed the authors I can share!
This was made for the Masquerade event for the jilytober fest of 2023. Loved the prompt!
Prompt: I bring my students on a school trip to the museum/zoo/your niche workplace and you are the guide and you are being so nice with the kids, thank you for giving them a good time and hey can I have your number?
AO3 | FF
Under the "Sea"
The Aquarium was a nice place to spend the sunny hour of London’s summer hear wave. The place inside was cooled down, and the reflection of the light inside the tanks made the viewing area feel like you were at the bottom of the ocean with all the fish swimming about.
Lily had to admit that that was one of her favourite ways to spend the day, just admiring the ocean fauna as she escaped the heat and crowds of the street, as well as avoiding her sister at their parents place.
It was an easy out, she had to admit, she had lied to her parents about needing to go and check the exhibits before school started, make sure her knowledge was up to date for the excursion she had with her class at the beginning of the school year. But a school of clown fish was always better than Tuney’s rant about how she was single and never took care of herself.
Due to the heat of the day she expected the place to be crowded, what she didn’t expect was the amount of people that arrived. Usually parents were busy during the week, but today it seemed that everyone and their little children were over at the aquarium.
Excitement all around as the kids chased some fishes or sharks and their parents chatted over the colours and shapes trying to engage with the little ones.
Then suddenly there was a collective gasp and a bit of silence before one kid loudly screamed. “Mermaids!”
It was an unusual thing for it to happen, she knew that kids had rambunctious imagination, however, usually it was sprinkle between one or two, but it seemed that all the kids were running to the main tank to see something that apparently Lily was missing.
Which made her curious.
Reaching the main tank she could see something that shouldn’t be there, there were the typical fish and rays, nothing too harmful or over the top, but then she saw what everyone was excited for. Inside the tank there was a purple haired, and purple tail mermaid, and with her there was a teal haired, with matching tail, merman. They swimmed around the tank, just waving hi to everyone, spinning and swirling inside the water. Sometimes they approached the tank’s glass and blew bubbles and put their hands on the glass to try to get the kids to approach them.
It was adorable and exciting, and something Lily was not expecting to see on that boring day of summer.
The kids loved the theatrics, she knew they were just actors with well maid props. She had to admit that the mermaid looked gorgeous, her hair was adorned with a shell crown that matched her top, with pearls all contrasting with the clam shells she had all around. It looked like her crown was effortless on top of her head, but Lily imagined that it was more complicated than using it regularly outside of the water. She kept swimming up and down; the red head imagined to get some air, and tried to go as low as possible, even getting some shells in her hands to show the kids that watched her every move.
The merman, on the other hand, seemed to have more stamina, he didn’t need to get out of the water as much, but he really liked to go all out with the tricks, showing off his perfect muscles as he looped again, following the ray’s pattern, like he actually knew how to avoid any serious danger, but it still looked daring, and of course he knew his showing off paid off, as he threw kisses to the audience. Lily didn’t like this particular stunt as much as the mermaid, it felt like he was an arrogant toerag, it didn’t help that he winked at her while he was doing his stunts, like he knew she was watching; and she was, but not like that.
It was professional interest that was all.
Lily watched the rest of the show, just to make sure what else the merpeople would do for a show. It was super entertaining for the small kids, and at some point one of the staff from the aquarium started to explain the maritime life that was swimming in the tank, and how either mermaid was interacting to make sure their life was not perturbed and the safety that needed to be maintain, also wrapping a take of how to take care of the Ocean’s life, which made it easier for the kids to wrap her minds around, and made the adults bring them more often to the beaches and aquariums as the kids would always love to see the mermaids.
Lily had to say she was impressed. It wasn’t something she was expecting, and she loved the idea, her kids would ADORE the idea of coming to the aquarium and get to see the mermaids.
Maybe she would be able to get the mermaid to talk to her kids, so they could ask a couple of questions, be more interested in the oceans and its life. They already had the trip approved by the school, maybe she could try and get some more information and get things started?
Asking the staff how to find this out was easy, they really liked the idea of the school trip becoming more involved, that is what the merpeople initiative wanted, however, she needed to clear it with the department in charge of the programming, and that was not outside of the guest area.
One of the people outside guided her to a backdoor, where you could see the offices for the aquarium, the not so glamorous side of the business, where clerical work was assigned. They told her to go inside, pass 4 doors, and then to the left she would see the entrance to the mermaid tanks where the people in charge of the show would be.
She did as instructed and knocked on the door before entering. She heard a conversation mid sentence, they were two male staff members talking.
Prongs, mate, you need to approach the glass, or else the clients won’t interact with you. You know how Minnie likes the interactions.”
“I know, Padfoot, I know, but I’m blind without my glasses, I was afraid that I would just smash against the bloody thing.” someone mumbled, seemingly struggling with something. But Lily figured it was the merman and one of his fellow co-workers.
“What happened to your contacts? I thought you had them? You approached Fred and George not being able to see?” The other voice was a bit concerned, as Lily turned the corner.
It seemed the lack of interaction was justified, and Lily felt a little bad to have judged the performer harshly, but her thoughts became blank as she saw the merman, sitting, half naked, just wiggling out of his tail.
Lily understood the male body, she had to be prepared to do biology for some of her classes, but if you asked her at gunpoint what took over her mind at that moment, she would only be able to reply: muscles .
It was unprofessional, she knew, but sweet lord, if she thought she had seen those muscles work at the tank, she was mistaken. Up close and out of the water, the merman looked even better than with the costume. How was that even possible? Did he train for everything to be in the perfect place? That had to be illegal, she needed to report these to someone, she ought, but she could barely form a word, much less make a statement on how unfair this was for the rest of the human race.
She thought she could step back, and take control over her thoughts before asking for the person in charge when someone interrupted her thoughts.
“Are you coming in?” a woman’s voice asked, trying to get through the door.
“Oh… I…” she cleared her throat, and took a moment, the woman looked familiar, and then she noticed why, “You’re the mermaid.” it wasn’t a question.
The blonde chuckled, “Usually I’m called Marlene,” she offered amicably. “But still, are you coming in or out?”
“Oh! Sorry, I just realised that you and the mermaid are the same person, the purple wig threw me out a bit.” Lily replied with a smile, “I was going in? I was actually looking for you? I guess?”
“Me?” The blonde asked.
“Love, who's there?” one of the voices called from inside.
“Someone calling for me, taking me away.” Marlene added dramatically, giving Lily a knowing smile.
“What do you mean take you away? To where? By whom?” a dark haired man came to view as Marlene tried not to burst into laughter. He was tall and had long hair in a bun that was made to look put together, but it was still messy for a professional setting, but Lily had a feeling he liked it like that. “Are you taking my girlfriend away?” He finally asked the teacher, “I didn’t know Mars had a thing for redheads.”
“Sirius, stop.” she laughed, “I apologise about him, he’s incorrigible.” she said to the redhead, “And she’s a customer, I think?”
“Oh, don’t everyone have a thing for redheads?” Lily replied.
Sirius laughed at the comment. “I like you, Red.”
“The name is Lily,” she replied, not really annoyed, just providing a name, as she hadn’t introduced herself.
“Pleasure, Sirius, and you met wonderful Marlene.” he said, shaking her hand.
“Yes, I have, she was amazing at the show. That’s why I’m here actually.” she paused and looked between Marlene and Sirius, trying to avoid looking beyond them, to the still struggling figure behind them. “I wanted to ask if you do sort of meet and greets? I have a school excursion with my class, and I’m sure they would love to ask more about the aquarium and meet a mermaid.” Lily explained, hoping that she was in the right place.
“Oh! That’s lovely! I do do that.” Marlene replied. “I love kids, however, if you want a more educational experience, I would recommend you go to one of our other performers, as I’m more of an actress, they do have some people that know more than me.”
“Really? I mean you do great with audiences.”
“She really does, but for the boring stuff you should go with Jimbo.”
“Jimbo?” Lily asked, confused about the name.
“Yeah, Jimbo, the big oaf there.” he pointed to the man behind them that finally managed to put the tails away and was starting to get the wig out of his hair, his hand going to mess his hair, as it seemed to be too slick on his head due to having the wig on for water.
“I’ve told you to stop calling me Jimbo.” Lily heard the still half naked man behind Sirius and Marlene, why couldn’t that man put a shirt on? Was he against shirts? Not that Lily minded, it was just hard to concentrate.
It seemed that he heard Lily’s internal monologue, because he was reaching for a shirt to put on, as Sirius replied “Fine, Mr Potter, better?”
“Arse,” James mumbled, after pulling the shirt on and moving closer to Lily, giving his hand out to shake, “I’m James Potter, head of the department.” he smiled, trying to be professional, but his hand twitched and moved to mess his hair again, “I apologise, I usually don’t take appointments after being in the tank.” he smiled again, “May I know exactly what you wish to, see what can be done on our end, Mrs…”
“Miss, Lily Evans, pleasure.” she shook his hand, calloused and warm, even after just leaving the water. Odd. “I teach third grade, and my school is sending the kids here the first week of term. I wanted to see if it would be possible to get a meet and greet, get them asking questions about the fauna you have in the tanks, that sort of thing?”
“Yes, of course, we can book that in.” he said with a nod trying to get something from his pockets, but he still was in the neoprene lower suit to fit inside of the tail, “I apologise I forgot I have my mobile at the office, would you mind coming with me to get this sorted?”
“Would it be possible to make a call later on? I need to request this from the headmaster at school, I’m sure they will approve but you know how it might be.”
Marlene chuckled, “Don’t we all?”
Lily had to admit that she liked Marlene in and out of the water, she was a bit disappointed that she wouldn’t be the one greeting the kids. “If I could get a number I can call later this week, I would make sure to get all the details.”
“Of course, you can have mine, I’ll get it on the agenda once we sort everything.” James replied, and Lily nodded thankfully, exchanging details so they could be in contact.
The outing to the Aquarium was more productive than she early expected, even if she didn’t get the mermaid she wanted, she got something other school years might not get, so all in all it was a win.
Getting Alastor to approve the one on one with the mermaid was simple enough, he was glad that she took the initiative and applauded that she decided to include kids outside of her classroom.
She got all the details for 2nd and 3rd grade classes, there would be around 50 kids in total, and she needed to make sure James could fit all of those in just one meeting, or if they should be divided by groups, how to work it out, and how much more it would be. She had everything sorted when she dialled his number.
The conversation was easy and professional, James made a few jokes that Lily found funny, it wasn’t odd, and he wasn’t as obnoxious as she believed at first sight. He actually seemed to care about his job, and made sure she understood the schedules and performances that needed to happen so they could fit all the kids that would want to meet a mermaid, make sure to stay on point, to teach them about the things that they were supposed to be there to see. And not deviate too much from the topics.
In a few short weeks everything that James and Lily talked about was a reality, the kids saw him swim in the tank, he was more engaging with the people in the crowd. He must’ve gotten his contacts on, today. Lily thought as she saw the performance. Marlene was gorgeous as always, she felt a little envious at how lovely she looked in the water.
James was still as daring, but actually managed to get some of the kids engaged to the tank, he played patty cakes with some, and with the smaller ones he played peek-a-boo, which Lily thought was adorable, and the kids ate it all up.
She hadn’t felt an excursion was as successful until she saw what the meet actually looked like. She thought James would be sitting on a chair with his tail all made to look like he just got out of the water, but in reality he was in a big tank that was decorated to get the kid’s attention. James was out of the water at the top, just up enough for everyone in the room to see him, but low enough so he could engage with the staff, and his tail could be seen swaying inside the water. The kids could not take their eyes off him.
Neither could Lily.
“Look, it's the mermaid!” One of her kids exclaimed, “Wotcher mermaid!” Little Tonks exclaimed from the seats they had taken.
“He’s not a mermaid, he is a man!” Little Percy replied from the back of the crowd.
“Hullo!” James replied back to Tonks and then shrugged, the best he could as he was propped from the tank,” I don’t mind mermaid or merman. Did you know fish can change from being boys to being girls if they think it is useful? Isn’t that wicked?”
“No way!” A tall kid named Bill from another class replied back.
“Way! They can change for a lot of reasons, because of their size, or the age they have, or they just feel like boys instead of girls, or vice versa. There are a lot of brilliant things that fish can do. And I’m part fish, so I should know.”
“Have you ever tried to change and be a girl?” Percy asked again.
“No, I quite like being a boy, but it’s an interesting question. Do you think if I do, my tail would change colours?”
It was a random question, something that was not as serious as fish sequential hermaphroditism, but it certainly kept the eyes of the kids on him. Which Lily had to admire, not everyone could command a room full of kids to their attention.
James sold the part completely, he went in the water to get some “air” as fish survived on water, and explained how gills worked, how fish turned water into oxygen as we did with air. He added the names of the rays, and Bill said he had twin little brothers with those names, making James laugh.
It all went perfect, Lily couldn’t have asked for a better interaction with the children. They couldn’t stop talking about the aquarium, and about maybe having pet fishes and taking care of them and the oceans.
Once the kids left and Lily was safely back home she still had the image of James’ smile and his quick replies in her mind. She took her cellphone out and typed a quick message.
Lily: Thank you for today, it was perfect, the kids loved it.
James: I’m glad they enjoyed it! They look like brilliant kids.
Lily: They really are. And you handled them perfectly, I thought we would have kids running away from the meet.
James: Thanks for the faith, Evans.
Lily: They almost run away from my classroom when I try to teach them maths, it’s nothing personal, Potter.
James: Fair, but still, it seems they have a great teacher.
Lily: Thank you
A few minutes passed and Lily looked at her screen, she saw the name still on it, the conversation was simple, and to the point. Which she hated.
For some reason she found herself desiring to get something more to talk about, to get the conversation going, to get to see what he would reply with. Maybe see him clumsily forgetting that he had a phone to begin with and being natural at just human interaction, being a great person to both kids and adults. Lily couldn’t help to shake the feeling that she shouldn’t stop the conversation just at that ‘thank you’.
Lily: Potter, are you free on Saturday?
Her heart was going as fast as possible without her dying. How would he react? Would he tell her that he had a compromise? That he was actually with someone? Did it look like she was asking him out? Or maybe it wasn’t too obvious?
Lily hated doubting herself like that, she was usually more assertive. She wasn’t sure what that man was doing to her.
James: Yes, why do you want me to dress as a merman again?
Lily could feel the joking manner of the in the reply, his jovial self shining through.
Lily: No, not really, I was wondering if you would be up to get coffee?
The seconds that passed after she sent the last message felt like eternity. She was sure she made a fool of herself. That James would tell her their relationship was just business.
What came next surprised her.
James: Name the hour and place, and it’s a date.

DCA Info Part 19: Coquille Dorm 🐠🐚🌊
Tumblr media
Coquille (コキール寮, Kokīru Ryō) was founded on the Adventurous Spirit (冒険好きなの精神) of the Secretive Mermaid Princess and is inspired by the world of The Little Mermaid. Students of this dorm excel in Archaeology and Music.
Dorm Founder: Ariel
Tumblr media
Known in-universe as the Secretive Mermaid Princess (秘密の人魚姫) or the Mermaid Princess (人魚姫).
Dorm Crest
Tumblr media
The dorm crest features an emblem with a purple outline and light blue interior. The interior's background features bubbles and a silhouette of Ariel, with her pose being based on a pose she does in a promotional poster for the original 1989 film. The middle of the interior features the dorm's name and the bottom of the interior features a purple shell. On both sides of the exterior emblem, there is peach colored coral and green kelp grass.
Dorm Leader: Cerule Oceana
Tumblr media
Coquille's current dorm leader is Cerule Oceana, the princess of the Serpent Royal Family who's a lover of shiny things and desires independence.
Dorm Fairy: Marina
Tumblr media
Marina (マリーナ, Marīna) is Coquille's dorm fairy and vice dorm leader. She is described as being a good singer. She enjoys singing based on her current mood. She is often seen with a lilac shell that swims away so quickly leaving bubble trails. The shell is actually slippery and is difficult to grab onto. Marina gets easily distracted and a bit naïve but that's her charming point. Her singing always puts people in a pleasant mood.
Her current appearance is reminiscent of Cerule's desire to see the world but due to her being sheltered by her overprotective father, there wasn't much to do. She always dreamed of wanting to wander off to unknown places to seek thrills and see beautiful things.
Dorm Living Quarters
• The Coquille dorm living quarters is submerged underwater like the Octavinelle dorm of Night Raven College. The exterior is built on a formation of cliffs with an endless kelp forest below. At night, it is lit by large pearls placed in giant clams, jellyfish and glowing sea slugs. There are coral beds everywhere and along with it an abundance of sea life. There have even been dolphins and seals who stay for a bit and interact with the students. The bedrooms have shell beds, the bottom half is fixed with a soft sponge while the top is held up by sticky kelp and some barnacles. The building has spires with cone shells serving as the roof of the towers. There are giant clams attached to the towers that act as balconies and extra rooms. No one knows how those clams got to such impossible size but it provides a good design to the building. The hallways are very wide and the rooms have an opening for fish and other mermaids to swim through if they don't bother to use the entrance.
• Connecting to the building there is a walkway that leads to a dome in the shape of a massive hollow clam. This is the underwater building called, The Pearl Dome (パール・ドーム). This is where students sing and even hold parties. There is a large crystal cone on the roof that acts as a chandelier.
• Nearby the main building there is a large tower with a shell as the entrance, this is the Pearl Salon (パール・サロン). This is where the students go to have their hair done and be decorated in beautiful shells, gems and pearls. They allow students to try styling hair as long as they have proper basics learned, and post it on the cork board so that other students might like the style others have created. The staff there are a species of sea fairies, each one resembles a sea creature, they're like the dorm fairies in a way. They love to chat with students and they work in a smooth pace with not one mistake in the years of service. The sea fairies are ruled over by a queen, the queen resembles a seahorse but she's much larger and has a crown made of spiral shells. She keeps an eye on her sea fairies while also running the salon. Students don't know her real name but they call her, Madame Trixie (マダム・トリクシー). She is such a diva and loves a good gossip, she often likes to chat about boys with the girls.
Etymology
The dorm's name derives from the word "coquille", which means "shell" in French.

Birthday Countdown Revchase Snippets - Day 22
To celebrate Valentine's month as well as my birthday month, I'm going to post a snippet of Revchase every day until my birthday, using these prompts- there are 25 so it leads right up to my birthday!! Here is day 22!!
22- Write about a member of your ship giving the other a special gift.
Pairing: Robert Chase/Reverie (oc)
Media: House MD
Word Count: 717
Rating: Everyone
CW: None
Weekends off– no, shared weekends off, are the most sacred and important kinds of days off. How rare it is for House to let Chase off the hook for more than an hour, let alone the same time Reverie isn't stuck in the OR– it's a time to celebrate. And often, that celebration is going down to the shore to surf, swim, and beachcomb to their hearts’ content.
They arrive back home with sand still finding its way out of their bags, their clothes, hell, even their bodies despite several showers. With skin just a few shades warmer than before, up to a point, thanks to whatever wetsuit or swimwear they chose. With bags full of new ocean treasures, from shells to bones to beach glass.
One particular item, though, Chase has found and kept hidden from Reverie. Which is difficult, considering she digs around in all the bags to make sure they have everything before coming back home. And this item is difficult to conceal, considering its fragility and importance, so Chase has had to keep it basically on his person at all times to keep Reverie from finding it.
The afternoon they return home from the shore, and everything is put away in the house, Reverie throws herself onto the couch and sighs. Chase can tell she's exhausted from the trip and the unpacking, and since she's in a relaxed state, now might be the time to give her that special item.
“Hey, Rev,” Chase calls to her, his voice having an air of importance to it. “There's something I want to show you.”
Reverie turns over her shoulder and watches as he digs in the camera bag. “Oh, Christ, is it a picture of me eating shit on that really small wave? Did you photograph that? Because I do not want to see that. It was embarrassing enough as it is.”
Chase shakes his head and laughs. “No, it's something else. A gift.”
She raises her eyebrows. “A gift?”
“Yep,” he says, trying to keep the thing he speaks of hidden in his hands. “A gift from the ocean.”
Reverie's heart speeds up. “Oh God, what did you find?”
He kneels beside the couch next to her and opens up his hands like a clam shell, revealing what's inside. Reverie gasps and smiles, laughing in disbelief.
“Ta-da,” he says playfully, moving his hand closer to Reverie.
“Holy shit, Chase! You really found this?!”
In his hands is a small, black item, no longer than six inches. It looks like some kind of pouch with horns on the top and bottom, and that's because it is– it's a mermaid's purse.
“I can't believe you found a fucking mermaid's purse!” Reverie cheers, poking at the leathery little sea trinket. “The size, the shape…it's gotta be a small skate egg case. When and where did you find this?”
Chase smirks. “Funny enough, I found it when you ate shit on that small wave. That wave washed it ashore. I knew you've always wanted one, so I grabbed it as fast as I could and I've hidden it all weekend so I could give it to you as a present.”
Reverie takes the mermaid's purse into her own, considerably smaller hands, and admires it with sparkles in her eyes and a huge smile. “This has got to be like, the coolest thing I've ever gotten to hold. And I've held a human heart!”
“I'm glad you like it,” Chase replies with a smile. “Took a lot of effort to keep it hidden. I'm just glad you thought I took an embarrassing picture of you and refused to touch the camera all weekend.”
She laughs. “I'm glad, too. You know where this goes, right?”
“Yep.”
“The shelf of honor,” they say simultaneously.
The shelf of honor is a special shelf in their bedroom, just adjacent to the nightstand but high up on the wall. It contains several oddities and specialties from both parties’ beachcombing adventures, and the mermaid's purse fits right in next to a heart shaped shell Reverie found right after telling Chase she loves him.
“Thank you so much,” Reverie says before giving Chase a kiss on the cheek. “It's the coolest thing on the shelf, innit?”
Chase nods. “I think so. I really do think so.”

Wedding HCs [Part 1]
Wedding headcanons for the lesser talked about ships bc they need more love and I will give it to them.
AquaOrca (Gang Orca x Aquamarina)
Lets ignore the fact that Jade tried to murder Gang Orca when she found out he was dating Aomi and only later came to terms with their relationship.
The wedding would be very beautiful with ocean inspired colors. Kugo's nieces would make all the decorations because they wanna help get ready for their new auntie.
For the dress, it would be inspired by Ariel's wedding dress but with more mermaid theme to it.
Tumblr media
Aomi's anxiety rises to an all-time high because she wants the wedding to be perfect and what if she messes up? It's so bad to the point where her mothers literally had to ban any mention or talk of the wedding.
One of Kugo's nephews is the ring bearer and he gets to wear an adorable suit for it.
The day of the wedding, both of them are so excited to see each other and want to touch each other so bad but they can't because they aren't allowed to be near one another.
Jade sings a cover of one of Aomi's songs as she walks down the aisle. Everyone is in awe at how beautiful Aomi looks and even Kugo himself is brought to his knees at his wife.
Kugo has to pick up Aomi to kiss her bc he is tol and she is smol. Either way, it's a beautiful, romantic sight.
Also their rings are references to each other. Jade's has a killer whale on it and Kugo's has a clam shell bc he calls Aomi his Venus (and Venus emerged from the water in a literal clam shell).
Speaking of Venus, the cake is a parody of the birth of Venus but with Aomi. Needless to say, she's blown away by it.
AquaOrion (Orion x Aquanette)
*Aquanette belongs to @/aquajuilee
Contrary to what Sakana believed, Saizo wanted a small, intimate wedding with just friends and family. He don't have time for all the media bravado.
Ageha goes wedding dress shopping with Sakana to help her figure out what she wants. She ends up settling on a beautiful princess style dress with short sleeves.
Saizo is asking his younger brother Gen'ichiro all these questions about marriage and stuff because he got married before him and Saizo needs to be prepared for anything his role as a husband throws at him.
No particular theme but the color is indigo which looks great on the both of them.
They have the wedding at a nice place not too far from the seashore. As Saizo and Sakana kiss, a dolphin jumps up over them and it makes for an iconic wedding photo.
The cake is shaped like a seashell and is decorated with crystal candies.
DemoCat (Demoman x Black Cat)
This one goes out to @calciumcryptid
Akio wants to have a traditional Jewish wedding like his parents did and is trying to get Kuroneko on board with the idea.
As much as Kuroneko loves her baby, she's a) not religious at all/an atheist and b) feels like she'll be appropriating his religion. It's only when his mother and her have a Walter White "We're not done till I say we're done" type of convo that she agrees.
The experience is lowkey kinda harrowing for her because she never really saw herself getting married or anyone wanting to marry her (you can thank Goldeye for that) and now that it's actually happening, she feels all these emotions.
While everyone thought she was going to pick an extravagant wedding dress bc it's Kuroneko, she actually chose a rather simple looking one with black lace.
Either way, Akio thinks she looks absolutely beautiful.
Day of the wedding, Akio's mom gives Kuroneko a pair of hamsa hand earrings and a necklace with the same symbol. When asked what it meant, she was told it was a protective symbol in the Jewish faith.
Freaks out a little when she gets lifted up in the chairs by Akio's mother, his aunt, Suzy, and June at once.
StellaNox (Stellara x Nox)
Even before the wedding is announced, Taiyomi and Tsukimi already leaking shit to their friends and husbands like their name is TMZ.
Much like AquaOrion, both Umeji and Hoshimi wanted to their wedding to be private and intimate, especially with the presence of the Yonaga inner clan (though that'll be hard with the younger Sorakami sisters).
There's really nothing for them to worry about since they have experience with weddings.
Hokuto is the ring bearer and Hoshiyo is the flower girl. Meanwhile Kureko gets to be the "blessing boy" or he gets to bless Hoshimi's entrance into both the family and his life as his stepmother.
Hoshimi chooses to wear an elegant, dark blue wedding dress with stars embedded into it. It's different than her previous wedding dress, the one in which she married her first husband in.
They have the wedding in the afternoon and the party at night.
Umeji makes a toast to his new wife and makes a speech about how much he loves her and how she's lifted the darkness from his heart. For the first time in many years, people see Hoshimi become visibly flustered.
Taiyomi and Tsukimi take pictures of that and posts it to their social medias.

Miles away under the sun-kissed surface of the ocean, where the water is clear as crystal and blue as the contrasting sky above – resided populations of beautiful mythical creatures. Down in the lowest depths, the most scarce of areas that no human would ever dare to scavenge, lived the Mer-people.
Underwater forestry, plants, organisms of wondrous visions illuminating the deepest pits of the oceans. Fishes of all sizes and shapes occupied the area, weaving through the stems and leaves of charted trees along the motion of the currents. Just as birds fly among the surface. Gorgeous sands decorated the floor along with seven separate kingdoms enriched with enchanting palaces, each declaring a claim to their own sea.
Each palace, unique in their own way. Accommodating their surrounding habitats. Each of the seven districts ruled under the marvelous Mer-King, and each sea acquainted a heavenly, handsome prince. Kingdoms decorated with coral walls, sculpted sandstone slates and amber pointed windows. Roofs made from the finest and largest of mussel-shells, clams and hidden glittering pearls and jewels. Stones of riches, easily the most expensive gems that belonged in the pits of the hidden worlds.
The Mer-King seeded the realms with seven little princes who were all very beautiful children in their own distinctive ways. For each Prince, were given a household to look after, to grow up with, and study in practice to control their provinces.
Within the Arctic Ocean, where merfolk varied in shades of murky indigo and dotted with black spots was inhabited by the eldest of sons, Prince Seokjin. The Indian Ocean decorating the waves with scales of vibrant oranges complimented with a singular stripe of white down the backside, consisted Prince Yoongi. The cold of the Antarctic rested Prince Namjoon, along with his kingdom of deep purple-to-silver tailed scaly family. Tails irradiated a glow just like the moon reflecting on water.
Creatures in the North and South Pacific diverse in tropical colors, salmon pink beings belonging to Prince Jimin in the north, and bright crisp yellow folks ruled under the south’s youngest, Prince Jungkook. The last two kingdoms lay in the Atlantic Ocean. Beautiful deep green tails of the north, quipped with touches of holographic shine belonged to Prince Taehyung. Lastly, the region in the South Atlantic was full of rays of aqua blue and speckled with gold – is where Prince Hoseok lives.
Throughout their childhoods, given brief age gaps and the stretch of locations between another, the brothers all grew up together. Frequent visits, family gatherings being a constant presence with the young boys. All merfolk belonged to another, they took after another and populated the sea floor. Fishes would swim up, gently being held, feeding out of the hands of mermaids and mermen. Eventually within a mer-person’s life, they will be acquainted with a creature of any species. A forever buddy that becomes their pet, their friend, and family.
The beauty of the South Atlantic Ocean kingdom with a magnificent palace that had astounding flowers growing between the cracks of the walls in each apartment and room, was decorated with a large garden in the front. Full of dark and iridescent baby-blue trees with fruits that glittered like gold. Matching the specs of gold that embellished the tails of the locals. Flowers blazed with hues of butterscotch yellows, resembling the bright and burning sun from the surface above. Bushes and smaller shrubs matched the color of sulfur.
Hoseok was certainly a singular child, one who was quiet and thoughtful in group settings, but was the loudest and most careless when it came to freedom. His skin was soft and delicate, like the touch of a sunflower leaf. His eyes sparked a deep blue, twisted with an almond mix of brown. His tail was no doubt the most stunning in his sector, outshining others around him, a tell-tailed sign that he was of royalty. But the most notable of signs that screams royalty was the unique earring that never left Hoseok’s lobe.
Each handsome prince was given a dedicated pearl at their coming of age ceremonies, each identifying with their tail color. To which they must protect and kept safe for the sake of their empires. For the fact that these pearls harness great mystical powers, such power compacted within one tiny jewel. But this power could completely destroy a nation if given to the wrong hands, and if their owners neglect their duties.
Nothing pleased Prince Hoseok more than hearing about the unreachable world from above. Human beings who lived on land, not within the sea. Stories fascinated the curious mind of Hoseok, constantly being riddled with tales of these notorious humans. Over time, with the help of Nannies and families, Hoseok’s knowledge grew when it came to the world that was simply out of reach. Ships, towns, land animals, you name it.
Over the course of his younger days, he ventured out into the sea, accompanied by his trusty companion, Kiko – a leafy sea dragon. Together they collected a handful of unknown knick knacks, thingamajigs, and doohickeys that they forged for from shipwrecks. To this day – Hoseok still makes these trips, ventured out further into the sea without supervision, even breaking the surface of the water to catch a glimpse of the amazing world.
Nights where he could sneak away, rise to the surface and lay under the moonlight in the clefts of the rocks. Watching lights from the shoreline flicker dimly, the casted stars sparkling the sky in beautiful constellations.
“It’s so beautiful up here, isn’t it Kiko?” Hoseok spoke towards the leafy sea dragon that circled around his fins which remained dipped in the water. He sighed, breathing in the foreign air, the dryness cutting into his lungs. The wind played with his shaggy hair, his earring dangling along. His eyes set firmly on the coast, waves easing in and out at the ridge of the bay. Everything up here was so unfamiliar to Hoseok, so tempting and entertaining.
“There’s beautiful places all over. And under.” Kiko mused back. Skeptical and cautious as she grew accustomed to Hoseok’s nightly adventures. There was no way she could talk the Prince out of his plans, ever.
“But up here is so – is so,” he pauses. Noticing a small child holding an elder woman’s hand, probably enjoying a nightly walk on the beach. “… Amazing.”
The high church-towers were in view within the town that lined the coast. Carriages and music playing in the distance, even the chime of bells ringing. The simple fact that he could not go there himself caused him to yearn for it more, wish for it to happen in his dreams. This Prince was indeed passionate about the land before him, stretching his hands towards the air.
“Careful yourself, Hoseok.” Kiko warned. “It’s late, shouldn’t we be heading back before someone notices your disappearance?”
He nodded, with his eyes still trained on the silhouettes of the strolling humans. Watching them turn up a set of stairs and disappearing behind the curve of the walkway. He was fascinated, the kinship between humans wasn’t much different from his to his folks. Humans were so distant, but they seemed so similar to him.
A small tug on his fin caught his attention, seeing his little buddy pulling him. “Let’s go, you have a busy day tomorrow.”
On the swim back, descending down into the dept of the sea, Hoseok reminisced his favorite times above water. The early mornings, the midday views of seagulls flying high above in flocks, the sunsets were clouds scattered the sky and painted in violets, reds, and oranges. Watching the Sun extinguish into the horizons plane as the cool of the night sky took over.
Hoseok loved the upper world and all its inhabitants so very much.
Tumblr media
Daybreak tickled the waters, reflections of lights bouncing and refracting off another in the clear-cut liquids. It shined through Hoseok’s large amber window, casting a ray on his slumbering face causing him to wince. His body curled tighter in his clam-based bed; a thicket of woven blankets made of the finest kelp keeping him comfortable. Bio-luminescent decorations that drifted within his quarters losing their dim glows.
Shortly, his door would be knocked upon. Guards prepared to assist him along his daily routines, breakfast, taking a swim through the gardens, fitting for dresswear. Today, his brothers were due for a visit – since his kingdom was hosting the annual Festival of the Arts this year, as the event rotated between each realm every year.
It was always a delight to seek comfort from his siblings, to talk among another with similar thoughts and feelings as each and every single one of them were in the same shoes – in this case, fins. They were close to another regardless of the actual distance of their homes. And he was more than happy to celebrate the festivities and provide his best hosting service.
Prince Jungkook was the first to have arrived along with his party, very atypical of the youngest who outshines the mer-world quite frankly with his beaming yellow tail and natural abilities. His excitement to see his older brother urgently was overwhelming as he searched throughout the Aqua realm’s palace for Hoseok. Wittingly enough, he knew Hoseok’s patterns, the layout of the entire home.
“Hyung!” Rang through the water – not sounding quick enough for Hoseok to process before the bulldozing clash of his body into another’s. Tough arms circled Hoseok, tightening in a rush just in time for him to tilt his head to catch the sight of jet-black hair and a flash of canary yellow.
“Ah, Jungkook. You nearly gave me a heart attack!” Hoseok hollers. “Don’t sneak up on me like that!”
Jungkook laughs, holding his brother tight and against his will, “I’m sorry Hobi – it won’t happen again.” The scrunch of Jungkook’s nose and the teasing smile made his quick apology sound completely fake.
“You’ve filled out more I see.” He notes the stature of Jungkook from the last time he’s seen him. Chest expanding further, his hair longer and pulled in a half bun with loose ends spilling out around his fringe. The twinkle of Jungkook’s yellow pearl lays just between his clavicles on a threaded necklace. But his youngest brother still adorned his childlike smile, large eyes popping out with animation.
“Indeed, I have.” Said the yellow tailed man.
“Have you prepared well for the ceremony tonight?” Hoseok questioned while shifting out of the other man’s clutch, fluttering his fingers through his case of human books. Careful not to tear the thinned papers that were not made for the water.
They were in the secondary study – dedicated to Hoseok’s cherished collectibles of human items that drifted down to the sea floor. It was a private area, filled with wonder and intertwining plants. So many new and beautiful objects decorated the interior of the room along with the drifting innocent fishes that floated around like fruit flies.
Jungkook grabbed hold of his brothers’ hand, tearing him past the seaweed curtains and out of the room. “I need help with a part of the choreography – I’m not sure what to do.”
Each of the seven princes were a part of the annual festival, performing their own pieces of art. Music surrounded their lives, and each prince specialized in one of the three professions: Singer. Dancer. Composer.
In tune with another – they create a perfect melody, a rhythm they cast into the waters. And all together they grow stronger with the help of their pearls.
“Let’s not head to the ballroom – I’m sure they are still setting up.”
“Jungkook! Sir!! Prince!” A peep of a scream came from the corner, a frantic Moorish Idol fish bee-lining towards the two still Princes. “Don’t you bolt off like that again! I can’t catch up with your speed!” it pants as it swarms around Jungkook’s face.
“Gotta be quicker, Pip!” Jungkook giggled, using his fingers to brush against his tuckered-out buddy.
Pip eyed Hoseok, recognizing the older Prince and jumped in embarrassment. “Prince, I apologize! I didn’t greet you properly, please I am so dearly sorry!”
“No need for formalities.” A wave of Hoseok’s hand hushed Pip’s words. “It’s nice to see you again. Now – about that choreography…”
Tumblr media
The rooms were lit to the high-nine. Capacity of several variations of flourished colored tails decorated Hoseok’s palace – events like these are his favorite. Not only is he surrounded by his school, he’s encircled by his glorious brothers. The only thing that stressed out the aqua tailed prince, wasn’t the planning of events, fitting for costumes, dresswear, or deciding the best dishes to cater. The performance he practiced for day in and day out alike his brothers – what stressed Hoseok out was the company of his father, the Mer-King himself who only showed his presence for special occasions.
Each Prince were presented in front of the crowd of hundreds, their titles in all. Dolled up to accommodate the affair with engaging chains that wrapped around their waists and wrists, extra clam and shell accessories added to decorate around their loose arms and tail. Designed capes, hip skirts, and sheer fabrics that moved with the waves as they would do with the wind from above. Crowns made from wreaths of white lilies with bejeweled opal white pearls dangling down the band.
One by one they presented their acts along the stage, an entertaining uproar surpassed through the crowds from the Royal’s concert. The dancers who weaved like fluid coil to the cords of music were nonother than the feisty topaz yellow Jungkook, the carefree aquamarine dazzled Hoseok, and the flirtatious yet ditzy salmon pink royal, Prince Jimin.
Contrasting the dancers were the stunning vocalists of the group, Seokjin and Taehyung. Together they crafted a harmonious aura with their lyrics and tones. Entreating voices far sweeter than any human or mer-folk around.
Princes Namjoon and Yoongi of the Antarctic and Indian Oceans were strong composers, masters in a range of musical instruments. Their wits, knowledge, and pure love for the magical symphonies poured out of their bodies through devices and tools. Drafting tunes for songs every breathing moment.
It was late once again as Hoseok frustratedly swam up to his usual cove. Hoisting his body up on a smooth rocky islet that broke through the surface. Up here, Hoseok felt light and at ease. Repressing the tensions that bellowed below in the pit of his realm. The breeze was steady and refreshing, toying with the stands of his dampened hair and drying off the droplets of water that trickled down his skin.
He shed the tokens that deemed his high rank prior to wondering off from the palace, only keeping his stationary earpiece securely in. The clouds floating are coated in golden and rosy shades, evening stars piercing the sky in the dimming east. The nearing night looked extraordinary in Hoseok’s eyes.
A large ship with three white masts settled still on the water with only one sail unraveled. People littered the deck, music and song resounded from the vessels, and soon after when the night casted over the sky, the light of hundreds of lamps burst into view.
It was odd for a ship to be sailed far out during this time, even more peculiar to have a scatter of lights beaming from floating lamps that hovered into the air.
He swam close to the captain’s cabin being cautious to stay low in the water, and with every rock of the waves Hoseok was able to look through the clear windowpanes. Kiko stayed close to Hoseok, wiggling herself into his hand for security as they drawn near the scary object that rested on the water.
There were many richly dressed humans within, gowns and suits decorating each member in a fashion. The most bewitching of them, a person who stood out of the crowd and stared into the far distance of the water was a young princess with flowing thick hair. No doubt in Hoseok’s mind that this beauty was no younger than him, and he felt completely captivated by her looks.
A festival was being celebrated on the same day Hoseok’s home celebrated his. In honor of this princess’s birthday the crew were dancing and singing on the upper deck, similar to how Hoseok’s family just partook on a stage deep below. It was fascinating his wondering eyes, activities so alike to his own. And the moment the princess appeared among the lively bunch, rockets shot up into the air, turning the night into day.
The loud boom of cracks sizzling into the air scared Hoseok and Kiko, forcing him to dip his head back under the surface.
“Let’s go back! This isn’t safe!” Kiko chimed in, shaking her frail leafy body.
Hoseok looked up through the plane of water, eyes wide with shock. Not once has he ever seen this lightshow before. These weren’t cracks of blue zigzags that dressed the sky like lightning, theses were bright loud bangs of noise that sparked fire.
Through his perception, he watched the glows vanish. Until another boom ripped through the air along with another flash of light. “Hold on.” He says.
The curious merman raised his head above water again to witness a scene of falling stars upon him. A fiery shower he surely has never seen before tonight. It was like large suns revolved around his head, the brightest of fishes swam in the air that reflected on the clear glass-slate of water of the sea. Who knew humans could have such power.
The princess could be seen distinctly throughout the sailors that laughed and jested with glee. Her face adorned with a wide smile, one that shined so bright. “Oh – she’s so beautiful, isn’t she?”
It was later now, but Hoseok couldn’t take himself away from the ship and the beautiful young princess. She remained looking through that cabin window, rocking to and fro by the motion of the sea. He was enchanted by her, charmed by this unique being. There was something about her.
“Would you look at her?” Hoseok examined, smiling to himself. “She’s breathtaking.”
Kiko fluttered around Hoseok, a nervous wreck of a fish as she sensed an unnerving suspicion. “Please, we must go back. We’ve overstayed too long.”
“Oh poppycock. The palace is in perfect condition. Nobody will notice me missing.”
“Sir – “
There was foaming and fermentation in the depths beneath causing the ship to tilt faster. Waves rose high and violent in a span of minutes. Sails were spread, a commotion coming from the desk resounded. A distant thunder was heard, rumbling through the space above.
“Ah – father…” Hoseok snapped his head, “He’s angry.”
“I told you we must go!”
Hoseok and Kiko both swam a few meters down after once last glance at the ship that furled their sails once more. Until a sudden pound echoed through the waves. The great vessel tossed and turned on the volatile waters like a rowboat as the waves rose to an extreme height. It towered over the ship, clashing forcefully into the deck and submerging the manmade object. Water filled the cavities of the deck, the stout masts bent under the swirling billows.
“Hoseok!” Kiko shouted at the stunned merman who watched with wide eyes. An internal struggle inside him to tell him to go back to the Mer-King or to help the sinking ship. “We need to go!”
“I can’t! It’s going to turn over into the sea!”
Just as he guessed, the crew among the vessel was in terrible danger; since he himself had to beware the shattered beams that tore away from the vessel and splashed down above him. Wreckage both floating and sinking, causing hazards to think twice about.
“Get him to stop Kiko, tell him I’m fine! Just stop the storm!” Hoseok shooed his seahorse away, heading himself to the surface and ignoring the pleading screams.
It was pitch dark above, so dark that he could not distinguish anything until a flash of lightning disclosed to him the whole of wreck. Burning flames above the water. Hoseok only felt urgent for his wondrous princess as he sought her out the instant the ship kissed the bottom of the seafloor.
Hoseok knows no human can breathe underwater, he knows the only times he’s seen a human up close were the bodies of corpses that drifted down into the depths. He did not want that fate for the princess.
He dove himself through the shards and fragments that sprinkled within the water regardless of the danger he was inducing but with his steady swim he found the princess having difficulty holding her head high. Her eyes already closed while clutching her frame around a piece of driftwood, inevitably would have drowned completely if it wasn’t for the aqua blue merman who came to the rescue. Bearing the force of the heavy current, holding the princess above the water’s surface.
Tumblr media
The sun rose in the horizon towards morning, by then the ongoing storm had seized and there weren’t any traces of remains from the shipwreck. Rays of lights restored color to the princess’s cheeks, though her eyes remained closed. Her dampened dress riddled with sand and stray leaves of seaweed.
They lay off in a secluded cove far from the casually populated beach. Surrounding cliffs hiding them away. Hoseok laid gazing up at the arresting princess, stroking the strand of wet hair away from her face. Her skin was soft like a rose petal, and a slight pink undertone hid beneath its expanse. “Please wake.” He whispered as he studied her features.
This was the first time Hoseok laid about the land, just shy of the waters reach. He could see the dry green wood that extended along the coast, cliffs and mountains drawn clearer. Firm quartz sand which he now occupied along with his new companion. He turned her face towards the rising sun that was illuminating the world.
A quiet sound escaped the mouth of the princess, surprising the merman suddenly. He leaned back, head blocking the sun from direct view of her face while she sleepily opened them. The haze of her eyes coated her sight, looking at the figure that was in view. She grumbled, blinking rapidly to readjust the image before her. A stranger hovered over her, a concerned look across their handsome face as they looked down at her in curiosity. Golden brown hair flowed around; a glint of blue entrapped into his brown almond eyes.
“Hello,” Hoseok whispered, lifting the corner of his lips up.
“Who-“
Hoseok shifted the moment he heard of loud barking noise coming from the side of a cliff. His movement caused the piercing rays of light to shine into the princess’s eyes, blinding her some more.
The merman jolted away from the shore in a panic, hiding behind some stones further into the sea. Hoseok watched from afar with unyielding attention, a black four-legged being running towards the reviving princess. A small group of men followed suit to the black figure who alerted the humans of its findings.
“Oh Princess!” one shouted as they ran over. They smiled kindly down at her, assisting her off the sands and into a blanket. “Princess Y/n, are you hurt?”
She was dazed and confused, checking her surroundings for the other person she just saw. Did she see someone or was it her imagination? Who had saved her from the previous night? “Where’s the man? The one who saved me?”
The surrounding men gave another a questioning look, looking quite confused when they eyed the area around them. “Miss, nobody is here besides us? You must have swallowed too much seawater – it’s a miracle you survived.”
The black hairy creature spotted Hoseok out, yapping towards him and trying to get the humans attention. The animal saw him, no doubt, and Hoseok ducked for cover under the waves as they passed, waiting for his moment to come back up.
The princess was taken back onto the land with the assistance of the furry creature and humans, leaving Hoseok distraught behind the stones of the bay. But he was relieved that she survived, her beauty could live on longer, and he couldn’t wait to share his story about how he saved a human. Immediately, when the princess was finally out of view, he plunged beneath the water to return back to his palace.
“Y/n…” He hummed, repeating the sweet name that rang his ears. “Her name is Y/n.”
Tumblr media
“Where did you go last night?” The Mer-King shouted in the dining hall. Hoseok floated in front of his father, eyes trained to the seabed below their fins. The six other brothers hovered off to the side in a stationary line, motionless as they watched the scolding unfold. Each accompanied by their personal pets who too drifted in the silence of the water.
“Answer me, Hoseok!” the King’s voice resembled the same boom of the magical fire show from last night.
“I – I was… I went...”
“Don’t you dare tell me you escaped up to the surface.”
Hoseok fell silent. His words lost in his throat when he made eye contact with his father. The King stood still with the length of his graying hair exceeding past his shoulder blades, a crown sat atop his head made out of coral and angulate wentletrap shells. Spikes of eelgrass flowing from the tips of the multicolored crown. His slimy tail was ombre from a berry red into a sandy brown – dorsal fins displayed wide and drifted just how a beta fish would, flared up just how a beta fish would. His steel gray eyes stared down at Hoseok with intensity, waiting for a response.
Voiceless silence. Hoseok could not speak another word without distressing his father any further. In defeat he hung his head down to the floor, sinking his shoulders.
“You are not to leave the palace.” The King’s voice broke through. “You are not to enter the surface of the water. Do I make myself clear?”
“But Fath –“
“Am I clear!?” He shouted. Voice echoing through the quiet halls of the palace – hand clutching his beloved trident tight.
“Yes, Sir.” Hoseok grimaced. Kiko fleeing into the middle of Hoseok’s back.
The Mer-King departed the dining hall, leaving the seven brothers to themselves. It was when Hoseok looked up seeing the concerning looks crossing each of his brothers, did he feel guilty for his actions.
“What are you doing? You know you shouldn’t meddle around up above. What if someone saw you?!” Namjoon spoke, the cool tone of his voice chilled through the water. The purple scaled man swam closer to Hoseok, the slate of silver shining through his hair and the tip of his fins. His purple pearl shimmered in the arm cuff on his right of his crossed arms, his crab responding in the same gesture. “Hoseok, think of the dangers.”
“I know. But hear me out – I did something so amazing last night!”
“Namjoon’s right, you know this.” Seokjin stepped in with a pointing finger embellished with his pearl, “And to pull that stunt, especially when father is visiting, you’re asking to be yelled at.” His small, very animated manta ray wiggled around Seokjin’s mannerisms, copying the same movements as he did.
Hoseok’s mouth formed a triangle frown. Resentment settling in the pit of his stomach along with a mix of emotions. “Can you just listen to me?”
“Then speak.” Heads turned over to the aloof green merman who seated himself on top of the turquoise sea-glass table. The side of his hair clipped back with a white barbed clam, allowing the rest of his deep brown wavy hair to flow naturally. Under his ear shined the dark pine colored pearl, just how Hoseok’s did. Taehyung’s fingers twirled around his pale jellyfishes’ ruffled tentacles, staring off into the distance in deep thought. “What was amazing?”
Hoseok scanned the eyes around him, taking in a strong breath before telling his otherworldly experience. The merfolk knew of legends, myths and facts about the land above. Artifacts that fallen down into their domains created curiosity but there were fears of the stories about merfolk traveling far too close to the coastline. Humans may be mystical to mer-people, but it was never wise to breach the surface to study them.
“And the lights started falling down after the loud bang! Fire burning and sizzling out in beautiful streams! It was so bright!” He exclaimed with his audience listening in. “But then the storm demolished the ship! It happened so fast!” Hoseok continued his dramatic story with such immense passion, comparing how humans and merfolk celebrated in similar ways.
It infatuated the listening ears, well, some more than others. “And then I saved her from the wreck! I saved her guys! I brought her to the shore and – “
“You what?”
Yoongi, with a tail of vibrant marmalade orange cut his younger brothers train of thought. His narrow coal cut eyes shot angry towards Hoseok. A menacing stare emitting from the shaggy dirty blonde-haired male, questioning his brother’s reckless behavior. “You went on land?!” His pet lionfish flared its fins at the tone of his owner’s voice, grumbling something about idiocy.
“She lived because of me!” Hoseok retorted, leveling up to the stinging tension that was rising quickly.
“You’re troublesome, really.” Yoongi chided. “She would have been fine if you were here in your palace! That storm wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for you!”
“You’re setting a bad example for the younger ones.” Seokjin nodded towards the wafting men who innocently drifted in the background of the conversation.
Hoseok fumbled over his words, mouth gaping open looking for words to fill into it. He knows his brothers aren’t wrong, they were just being cautious. But Hoseok felt like they looked down upon his widened spectrum, his drive to expand the knowledge about the world above. It wasn’t fair with all the limitations merfolk had, and even more restrictions for a Prince.
Tumblr media
Hoseok grew quiet and reflective as days passed by. Obeying the tolls and jobs of his prince duties, being kind to other fish folk and leaning a helping hand for many in need. He stabilized his environment, praised the coral reefs that skirted his territory, even assisted with gathering the ripened fruits that sprouted from the gardens’ trees.
Though each and every day Hoseok pondered about the princess who lived above. Questioning to himself about her whereabouts, how she was doing and what she was doing. He dared to stare at the new statue that became his favorite décor in his luxurious field of flowers. A beautiful stone chiseled and sculpted to look like the princess, partially broken from the wreck of the ship, now stood in the middle of his oyster paddock.
When Hoseok wanted to be a daredevil, he succeeded in slipping away from the eyes of his staff and even his personal buddy. Rushing himself back to the surface where he loved so dearly to catch the linger of the air that dried his face and scales. Many times, he rose to the place where he had last seen Princess Y/n, where he left her on the sands before scurrying away. He always returned to his subterranean abode with a bit of sadness when he never saw her.
It was dawn when the first light creeped through the panels of Hoseok’s second study where he was toying around with one of his thingamajigs, trying to understand the use of it. He had an unexpected visitor in the middle of the night, a slither of a reflective shine catching his eye. An oily slick tinted film in the moonlight when he angled his tail in the right way.
“Taehyung.” Hoseok breathed, “You should have told me you were heading here; I would have arranged a genuine greeting for you when you entered the gates.”
He seemed cheerier during the night hours, maybe it was the relaxation of the disphotic zone or the cool temperament of fishes relaxing. Whichever excuse it may be, Taehyung always glowed better during the evening. “I’m sorry hyung – I wanted to check in on you. I was worried.”
They spent the entire night in deep thoughts, conversing to another about their worries and provinces. A few discussions about trades between regions, assembling plans and arrangements for brotherly gatherings. Taehyung found a fascination with a particular utensil from Hoseok’s study, a metal tool that had spikes at one end and a smooth handle on the other.
Throughout the night Hoseok confessed his sorrows to his younger brother, revealing his secret about the princess he had saved. How her beauty enchanted him, imprinting on his mind, how her statue now lays in the greens of his garden. The embarrassment crept up to him, distracting himself from his feelings as he showed Taehyung around his collection of human things.
“If my memory is correct, I believe I might know who your princess may be, because I have seen a castle above the waters.” Taehyung twirls the man-made gizmo around his fingers as he speaks. “When you mentioned her before in your story, I grew curious.”
Hoseok was caught off-guard from Taehyung’s words, stunned even. “Y – You know where she lives? You need to show me!” The aqua tailed man fluttered around with a sense of emergency, he held Taehyung’s hand pleading to him. “Please brother, show me what you know. It’s a wonderful morning already, the current is leveled, and the waters are clear!”
Embracing their arms together, Taehyung and Hoseok swam out past the palace walls into the blue of the ocean. Together they rose out of the water after miles of swimming, just in front of a tall bend in a cliff. They remained far off from the cost, deep enough to be unnoticed from the naked eye. But from their point of view they were able to see a castle with bright yellow stones, a flight of marble steps that led straight into the sea. Statues topped the pillars that outlined the walls, the building crowned with a Caspian blue. A great bay window faced toward the sea, the windows expanding long and wide.
The area was farther out from Hoseok’s natural comfort spot, he would pass this sector many times when he would visit up north to Taehyung’s realm.
From a closer look the two mermen can see silken curtains that hugged the frames of large bay windows, the walls inside decorated from top to bottom with magnificent paintings. Blurred bodies of servants walking across the tiled floors and expensive rugs. Deep within one of the larger rooms there was a fountain glittering with dancing water which sprouted from several areas surrounded by long stems and tendrils of plants.
“It’s so beautiful.” Hoseok whispered, creeping himself closer towards the castle that was built on the edge of the cliff. It was a real delight for the royal mermen to witness an abode so lovely, so riveting.
“This is the only castle I know of. I’m hoping this could be her palace.” Taehyung swam down, toying around with his small jellyfish in a fit of giggles. Dangling strands of seaweed around as if he’s forging the same motion as his buddy’s tentacles.
Hoseok dipped his head under, meeting up with the green tailed strides. “Thank you, Taehyung!” Hoseok’s arms entangled around Taehyung’s waist, spinning the two mermen in circles.
“It’s not far from the area where I saved her. Oh, I do hope this is her home!”
Taehyung beamed back a boxy smile, noticing the wild spirit of Hoseok shine. He was aware of the consequences of going to the surface, aware how enraged father could get when the sons acted up. But he was very happy to help out his brother – he saw something in Hoseok that he didn’t see in the others.
“Please, whatever you may do. Just be safe.” He petted the side of his brother’s hair, flicking his finger over Hoseok’s pearl earring.

I had a dream that I got myself a shapeshifting Nicki Minaj makeup set as a birthday present. I just got home from a long trip and impulse-purchased the makeup set at an airport duty-free shop. It was pitch black outside and felt very late at 9:30 like when you are a little kid and feel 9:30 is late. When your time is controlled by someone else, staying up late feels like a luxury. I’m not sure how old I was in my dream, since I travelled alone but still felt as though someone set a bedtime for me.
The makeup set was a mystery box from the newly released “Nicki Siren” collection, which was mostly mermaid and sea-themed clothes and accessories. It cost 900 dollars, but the crushing sadness of being stuck in an extended layover on my birthday and the Fear of Missing Out since it was the last Nicki Siren set in the store compelled me to buy it. It was the volume of a shoebox. Top-down, it was square and slightly taller than it was wide. I opened it in my bedroom. The cardboard box was white with dark blue gouache-like writing and the front of the box had Nicki’s face in the corner wearing a pearl and seashell studded tiara and a teal wig with a surprised expression. The overall mood was bright, fun, and unusually unsexy.
Inside the box was a teal plastic cube with gold accents. Inside the cube was custom light blue bubble wrap flecked with gold glitter. Under the bubble wrap was a 30-inch gold chain necklace with pearls at 3-inch intervals and two huge clamshells hanging off it. The clasp of the necklace had an 8-cm long flat silver pendant in the shape of a fan coral on it, studded on one side with tiny white crystals. Upon closer inspection, it wasn’t a real chain and instead gold beads fit together like a chain strung onto braided teal leather. The information packet in the box under the cube said the beads were 20-ct gold-plated sterling silver, the clasp pendant was cubic zirconia and platinum-plated sterling silver, and the pearls were cultured.
Despite being quahog type clams, the clamshells had the color and texture of a teal turbo snail shell. This is biologically impossible and I assumed the shells were fake or some weird manufacturing technique was used. Luckily, the shells could be removed from the necklace. which made it much more wearable. I was worried about the shell toggles being right on the pearls, since pearls are fragile, but the pearls were extremely slippery and couldn’t be scratched. I spun the clamshells around the pearls until I got bored. The shells were hinged containers. The smaller clamshell I could close my hand around and had 13 loose non-slippery pearls in it, while the big clamshell was the volume of two double cheeseburgers, extremely heavy, made sloshing noises when shook, but couldn’t be opened.
The giant clamshell also had a big rectangular magenta sticker on it, which looked very good against the teal shell. Peeling the sticker off, there was product and copyright information printed directly onto the shell, which was ugly as hell and the opposite of normal giant stickers.
When I gave up on opening the giant clamshell, I noticed the necklace chain had grown a cigar-like steel tube around one of the pearls. The tube unrolled into a 3-inch-long hamsa charm with a cloisonne enamel design of white birds flying over fields and forests on it. I went downstairs to get a string and a chair. When I hung the hamsa on the ceiling fan in my bedroom, it started bending again and the birds had left the forest and were now flying over the sea. Although the design changed, I never saw the birds or the hamsa move.
After I got down from the ceiling fan, the pearls were sprouting like seeds, growing into cubic zirconia pavé coral like the one on the clasp. Unlike the hamsa I could see them grow and change in real time. As an experiment, I pinched one of the sprouts until it broke. The broken sprout withered until it disappeared and instead of faceted gems set in perfect prongs, the pearl started producing cloudy industrial accident crystals and twisted wires, before slorping it all back into itself and turning black.
I felt bad about that and grated a block of parmesan over the pearls to atone. I had to clean cheese out of the prongs afterwards but it felt like the right thing to do. I noticed the coral was “eating” the cheese calcium crystals and growing little pearls so I put them back into the cheese and by the time all the parmesan disappeared, they were twice as big as the original with a seed pearl at every place the coral branched. When the coral pendants stopped growing, the pearl “eggshells” crumbled into powder and flowed back into the little clamshell, which grew a mirror and became a highlight powder compact.
I looked back in the box and found a little redwood box taking up the remaining space. In the wood box were sheets of stickers made of dyed suede leather, more cubic zirconia, and metal foil. I put some on my phone case and decided to cover the product information on the giant shell with stickers because it looked so bad. This caused the big shell to open. In the shell was a bottle of “Cali Coast” Nicki Siren perfume, a mini lip palette, a mini eyeshadow palette, three tubes of mascara, a teal lipstick, a magenta lipstick, and a sea salt bath bomb. There was a dent in the shell the exact size of the stunted black pearl so I put it in and closed the case. When I opened it again, the black pearl turned into a pearl-handled powder brush.
I looked up the makeup set on the internet and there was a #NickiSirenChallenge on instagram where people bragged/commiserated about what they got. Always, the pendant on the clasp was some kind of immobile sea animal like an anemone or sea pen or sea star and there were always two teal turbo-patterned bivalve containers, like scallops or oysters, one big and one small. The necklace also varied from choker to floor-length, some with real chains, some beads set with larimar cabochons, some with solid gold chains, some with no metal and all natural pearls. Instead of stickers, some people got sample-size vials of different perfumes, keychains, silk scarves, or vouchers for free Nicki Siren clothes. One in 150 makeup sets had clasp pendants with real diamonds and solid platinum.
To open the big case, you must cover it in stickers, put a key on the keychain, wear the scarf, or redeem the vouchers, depending on what you got. The big case always contained normal makeup and the little case contained 5-30 pearls which turned into different things depending on how you treated them, usually more makeup if you broke them, jewels if you didn’t. It was discovered breaking pearls before they sprouted turned them into applicable products like face creams or nail polish remover. Breaking pearls after they sprouted turns them into tools like nail files or lash curlers. Naturally people cared more about the pearls than the makeup even though it’s technically a makeup set.
The little case could turn into anything with a hinge, usually corresponding to what the pearls turned into, like my compact and brush. Most people got jewellery boxes but some people got phone cases.
There was a small chance of getting a bonus animated lucky charm. Someone got a clear resin horseshoe with a functioning ecosystem of malachite seaweed and peanut-sized copper sea urchins in it. Someone else got a palm-sized glass nazar which changed eye patterns before fading to a solid blue disc, then a brass goldfish would jump out of the center of the disc (not literally, it was a flat sheet of brass embedded in the surface which was etched using perspective to make it look as though it were leaping out of the nazar) before falling down, creating ripples that looked like an eye again. Another person got a blue faience ceramic Egyptian fish amulet that changed poses like it was swimming and sometimes moves to different rooms by itself. There were only 20 lucky charms in the world.
In one video, a pole dancer did a routine to Nicki Minaj songs and opened the box on stage. She got vouchers for a cameo in a music video and an entire free outfit. When she pulled the necklace out of the box, the strands of pearls just kept coming and when she turned the box upside down, the stage was engulfed in pearls like a giant shimmering mop.
In another video, someone poured Veuve Cliquot champagne on their case pearls and they hatched into huge round life-size faceted topaz sea apples encircled with braided gold wire instead tube feet, sprays of diamond-tipped gold as feeding tentacles.
Someone was able to score a rare full size Nicki Siren SuperBase foundation tube and she made a video where she applied the foundation, then complained it didn’t match her skin tone. The foundation immediately darkened to match. Later she made another video proving SuperBase foundation was like holy water because it could be refilled with different foundation but still be the same no matter how diluted it gets. SuperBase was the only product that behaves like this.
Someone ran over a case pearl with a Ferrari and it exploded into an 80-piece skincare set.
I felt bad because aside from the hamsa, I got the second cheapest versions of everything. But as I scrolled through instagram, I became grateful that I didn’t incur Nicki’s wrath.
Someone bought ten Nicki Siren sets and when she opened one, the stickers were paper, the necklace chain was that weird golden alloy that turns your skin green, the clasp pendant was a lead picoroco barnacle with a giant chunk of plastic for its beak, the small cockle had two pearls in it which turned into another lead barnacle and a sea salt bath bomb, and the big cockle had 8 sea salt bath bombs in it. When she tried to open the other boxes, there were more boxes inside and the boxes grew as though they were being put into more layers of boxes. She resold a box to someone else and in it was one of the rare larimar necklaces and a plate-sized bronze disc with the face of Medusa molded on one side and a shifting mosaic of an ancient Greek harbor on the other side. Consumed by greed, she kept opening the boxes until they were the size of refrigerators. Nine boxes in her garage, she now parks outside. She makes increasingly desperate unboxing videos and with every update her comments are filled with “i can buy a box for $3k dm me i’m serious” and “Ma’am. Please give up.” and “pouring out my superbass foundation for u when u cant fit in ur house ne more LMAO”.
Someone smashed open her big shell instead of opening it properly and it was filled with moths which followed her around eating her clothes.
An influencer who infamously bugged Nicki into giving her a free set for promotion was crying next to a 10-foot-wide crater in her house because she broke all the sprouting pearls in her little mussel case and the pearls became so heavy they broke the table, broke through the second floor, broke through the first floor, broke through the foundation, and sank into the earth. Then the little mussel turned into a 2001 flip phone and Nicki called her through it and said she was a “fake-ass copy-ass jealous-ass bitch”. She still wore Nicki Siren eyeshadow in the video.
Someone lied about getting a lucky charm for clout and it turned out she strung sea-themed Pandora beads on a mass-produced dreamcatcher. After she redeemed her voucher for a silk dress, when her big freshwater oyster case opened, there were 8 sea salt bath bombs in it and also moths. The moths ate her new dress.
There was a news article about the finder of the resin sea urchin horseshoe being banned from casinos because it increased his luck in gambling but most importantly made his bets on horse races always win. Since the hamsa is a hand, I assumed it would make me unbeatable in card games.
There was also a news article about German material engineers trying to get as many Nicki Siren pearls as possible to study their previously unseen anti-friction properties.
Not to be one-upped, Megan Thee Stallion announced the “Hot Girl Eternity” line of hoodies, t-shirts, and booty shorts which will allow the wearer to be immune to fire, heat, and radiation (hoodies), conjure flames (t-shirts), and absorb power from things they burn to add to their own lifespan (shorts). Even though they have yet to be released, it’s already impossible to get Hot Girl Eternity hoodies because they have all been preordered by hazard area workers and x-ray technicians and also stans.
I think in my dream all rappers are powerful enchanters because that makes the most sense given everything that happened.

Being on land is… fine. It’s fine! Newt’s fine. I mean, no, it’s objectively torture and his feet feel like they’re being shredded with every step, but. It’s fine. He’s good.
“Three days, huh,” he says. The words scratch dry and painful against the lining of his throat and come out in a hoarse breath of air. He scowls, and stubbornly keeps talking. He doesn’t do it to be listened to. He does it because thoughts outside the head are somewhat more linear than thoughts inside the head, and just at the moment he could use the help in keeping them straight.
“Three days. That’s fine. I can do that.”
After all, he’s made his way successfully to the end of the beach and it’s only taken an hour out of his first day. He takes the spelled clam shell out of his pocket and tilts it open an inch, just enough for the shrunken occupant inside to look out.
“Frank,” he says. It comes out as a soundless wheeze, but the thunderbird tilts his head all the same. “Is this Arizona? It’s got sky. And, um, rocks. They aren’t very red, maybe the current changed?”
Frank shrills a sad warble of denial and Newt bites his lip in frustration. “Well, which way?” he asks. The edge of the beach is lined with wooden planks, like one of the old ships if they were flat instead of ship-shaped, and beyond that a series of tall, blocky buildings. He’s already tried walking on the wood, and though it’s less pebble-strewn than the sand it’s not actually any less painful.
Every step will feel like walking on glass isn’t the sort of thing to pay attention to ground covering, Newt guesses. When he’d agreed, he’d been thinking of the worn-smooth sea glass, and he won’t say he regrets his life choices because it’s still important to get Frank home, but. He maybe regrets the finer details. Of some of his choices. A little bit.
Not ascertaining that Frank didn’t know where Arizona was before starting the countdown clock was, maybe, one of those things.
He spots a human. There aren’t many out - it must either be too early or too cold for them because they’re sun creatures, aren’t they? Newt doesn’t think they migrate, but he’s definitely noticed an increase in them during the summer months. He’s glad it’s winter now though, because even as weak as it is the unfiltered daylight makes him squint. But! Unseasonal or not, he’s found a human.
“Excuse me,” he wheezes, flagging the man down. “I’m trying to get to Arizona. I have a thunderbird, he needs to go home, and if I don’t get him out of this clam in three days then it’s going to eat him. And, um, I’ll turn back into a mermaid and belong to the sea witch. So really, it’s a bit important.”
The human frowns at him in concern, fingers twisting nervously in the handle of his briefcase. “Are you all right?” he asks. “Are you choking? Do you need - is it gas? No, it can’t be gas. You don’t look like you’re choking. Do you want to sit down? Do you need some clothes?”
Newt blinks. Opens his mouth. Closes his mouth. Opens his mouth again, then leaves it there in consternation as he remembers that his voice is rattling around a shell in Grindelwald’s cave.
“Oh,” he mouths, and, slowly, not quite sure how it works with his tail split in two and made knobbly, sits down.

Day 24: Feast
it turns out that everyone was lying to you about mermaids.
->contains gore, cannibalism.
.
.
.
Tonight is the night. The Festival of Rebirth. The end of something, the beginning of another.
You come back from a morning dive with your bucket full of striped fish and pear-shaped kelp roots and clams with shells the shapes of flower petals. They’re meant for the celebration, a communal meal around the bonfire. Your mother caught snow crab last night to make the stew she always does, and you desperately wish you could taste it one last time.
But you aren’t going to the festival. You aren’t even going home. Orange light flickers in the distance, the warm beckoning lanterns down the beach leading back to the village. You go the other way, tiptoeing through the tide pools, swimming through the shallows into the shadow of a seaside cave. The rocks here scrape your knees and bruise your elbows as you pull yourself upright out of the water, the bucket clutched to your chest. A sad, mournful sound like a high-pitched whale song, echoes off of the walls.
There is blood in the sand and on the low rock ceiling. There are shredded fish scales of such shimmering beauty that they could be mistaken for gemstones, left carelessly scattered along the ground to be swept out by high tide. There, in a small, murky, sits the village secret, her kelp-strewn hair clinging to her clammy, sea green skin.
They call this sad place Mermaid Grotto. This is where the feast will happen.
“I’m back,” you say softly, sitting on the edge of the rock wall lining her small lagoon. The mermaid’s golden eyes soften at the sight of you and she glides over, her face alight with joy. Her name is Uroko. You might be the only one who knows this. Nobody else has ever bothered to ask. “How are you doing?”
“Better today,” she says. She speaks so slowly, her voice low and melodic, suited for so much more than crying in this dark place. “And you? How are you?”
“Nervous,” you admit. “Do you know what today is?”
Her expression falls, her gaze dropping, her smile growing bittersweet. “Ahh. So soon,” she murmurs. She comes closer, tugs on your ankle and urging you into the pool. You slide in beside her, sitting on the bumpy rocks beneath the water, and she soothes you with one of her whale-like songs as she runs her fingers through your hair.
The stories started when you were little. Did you know, your parents said, that the flesh of a mermaid will make you immortal? The proof was all around you. Your grandparents, your great-grandparents, the village head from two hundred years ago—all were alive and well and smiling at each village gathering and festival, hardy enough to help with the pearl dives, weaving nets with the children, carving scrimshaw with dextrous hands. That’s the fairy tale you’re sold in this village, the story they start you off with. At that age, you sit by the bonfire at the Festival of Rebirth and eat your fill of the savory fish passed around in a ceremonial basket.
Uroko is covered in scars, jagged white lines and pale patches. There are notches in her fins and hollows in her beautiful tail, places where she did not grow back the same after pieces of her were carved away. You tear up just thinking about it. She wipes your face with her webbed fingers, kisses your forehead. She doesn’t blame you for any of it. You couldn’t have known.
“I brought you something,” you tell her, grabbing the bucket from the rock wall above. “I know it’s not a lot, but I had to hurry. Someone’s going to coming looking for me soon.”
“It is plenty,” Uroko says gratefully. She eats as though starving, tearing into the fish with her teeth and spitting out the bones. You heard about this, too, in a story once. Mermaids are ravenous, their appetites unmatched. With so much life in a single body, it’s no wonder their meat is so tender, so flavorful, and blessed with the magic of longevity. She eats everything you’ve brought and licks the bucket clean. You know she’s still hungry. She looks to you with wide, pleading eyes, but shies away guiltily.
“It’s okay,” you tell her. You sit up, unraveling the bandages wrapped tightly around your arms, your legs, your torso. You let them sink to the bottom of the pool. Uroko watches, her mouth opening unconsciously and drool trickling into the water at the sight and smell of your wounds being exposed to the open air. You look almost like her this way, covered in lacerations, in snaking scars tissue and a dotted trail of bite marks. She licks her lips but she holds herself back, covering her mouth with her hands. “It’s okay,” you repeat. “Don’t worry. Help yourself, like always.”
“I,” she looks at you, her face scrunching up in a bitter, miserable expression, “I do not want to.”
“Please,” you say softly, holding out one of your arms and the scabbing wounds along the underside. “You need to eat as much as you can.”
Only in adulthood do they tell you everything. The whole story, not just the fairy tale. That the mermaid flesh comes from the abused creature they keep in Mermaid Grotto, who is ritually tortured and harvested and left in a pool of her own blood and filth, who is fed the scraps of their catches so she survives for another wretched year only to be carved up once again. And when they are done with the mermaid, when she has grown weak and her meat tastes sour and she is unable to even lift her head above what little water she is given, then they kill her and throw her in a hole in the woods without so much as a grave marker, and then they lure a new one to the shallows and start all over again.
One cannot eat a mermaid and live forever. One must keep eating mermaids, or the magic will fade away. You’ve seen the desperation in the years between, when the bones of these secret creatures are scattered in the woods and the fishermen take to the coast with madness in their eyes. You don’t want any part of it.
“I am afraid,” Uroko admits, her beautiful voice trembling. “I am afraid of what will happen.”
“You’ll be okay,” you promise her. “Just eat. You’ll need your strength.”
Her teeth bite into your arm and you wince, swallowing a yelp. You don’t want to discourage her. This is hard enough for both of you as it is. You look elsewhere, away from the vicious hunger at her face. At the bloodied rocks. At the cloudy water. At her tail swishing above the water, the missing scales, the gouges and infected wounds. It helps harden your resolve, even when it stings and it burns and your flesh crunches and you feel her scrape bone, feel the stringy, muscled insides catching on her teeth. You bite back even the whimper that wants to come out, trapping it in the back of your throat, but tears roll down your cheeks.
You always thought it was strange, how your village worshipped  mermaids the same mermaids they feared so bitterly. Loved them for their flesh but hated them for the calamity they were said to bring. Dead mermaids were to be thrown back into the sea, lest they bring terrible storms and great, destructive waves to shore. They were spoken of as saints and monsters, of divine messengers and evil omens. It was all so abstract until you met Uroko.
She told you they were being silly. Dead mermaids can’t do anything like what they said. But a healthy one could certainly devastate a village.
Uroko is crying when she bites into your shoulder. Your arm is shredded, a mess of loose-hanging, mangled flesh. You cling to her, bury your face in the crook of her neck, and breathe in the scent of sea breeze and brine. Your blood runs down your skin and colors the water, swirling around you both in red coils. Uroko’s tears turn to saltwater pearls and sink to the bottom. You’ve talked about this. Planned this for months. You’ve brought her food every day, let her have bites and pieces of you to regain her strength and mend her wounds. You’ve watched her grow, her scales regain their shimmer and her eyes glow with life.
This is her festival, her night of rebirth. You whisper all of the secrets you’ve ever kept in your life to her, about silly things, serious things, about the things you regret, so she can carry them to the bottom of the ocean.
“You will see it, too,” she promises through her tears, between mouthfuls of your flesh, the feast of your body. “You will be with me, always. I will show you everything.” She sinks the sharp ends of her claws into herself, carves out a piece of green, bloodied flesh from her own body, and holds it to your mouth. You shake your head frantically, but she insists, presses it to your lips. “Please,” she begs you, “please.” It won’t work, but you don’t tell her. She’s as afraid as you are, and you’d like to believe it. This bit of flesh will not keep you alive as she tears you open to feast upon, but it may let you speak longer, may let you see her a minute more. It’s worth it to you.
A sob tears from your throat when you bite into her. It’s the sweetest, most delicious meat you’ve ever tasted, better than any piece of her you’ve eaten during the festival.
“Did you know,” Uroko whispers, “that the flesh of a mermaid that is willingly given grants its own sort of longevity?”
By nightfall, the pool is red. The bonfire is lit and the villagers descend upon Mermaid Grotto, but they are stopped a terrible, haunting noise. The singing is frightful, a screaming siren’s wail that shakes the cave walls and chases out the tide. And then it is silent, too silent, even the seabirds gone somewhere and the echoes fading. The pool is red and there are eyes glaring hatefully out of the dark, a webbed hand clutching the rocky edge. There will be a feast tonight, but it will not be for them. It will be for the sea.
A wave, so tall it scrapes the sky, comes crashing into the shore, sweeping away the festival, the village, and all of those bones in the woods. There is nothing left when it’s over, no bonfire, no grotto, no mermaids in a cave. But were there anyone left to see it, they might have glimpsed the glint of brilliant scales, the flicker of two intertwined fish tails slipping beneath the waves.

Summer Love 2 (Kim Taehyung)
One || Two || Three ( FINALE)
Tumblr media
Pairing: Mermaid! Taehyung x Reader
Words: 5.3K
Warning: Slight angst
Genre: Mermaid AU
Synapse: Taehyung is now a human who used to be a mermaid not long before. From food, lifestyle, clothing to flora and fauna; everything is new and fascinating to him. But adjusting to human life isn’t.
     ~Masterlist ~ One || Two || Three ( FINALE) || One shot Masterlist
                           ═══════ ⋆★⋆ ════════
It was almost sunset again. With summer close to its end; the breeze was colder than before, a good excuse to hide blushing cheeks and blaming the weather for it. Even the sand wasn’t as hot, neither was the ocean as warm as dark clouds gathered around the cove, breeze picking up and swaying the coconut trees around. The leaves bent at an odd angle to the right, painted in shades of vermilion and pink.
Taehyung watched fascinated how the plants that grew above water looked so different, and far less vibrant than the ones swaying in the water currents a hundred feet below. Not that he went back to the ocean again ever since he sprouted a pair of feet.
Somehow, the ocean scared him. It felt like he was being rejected by his very home. He had no qualms about bathing in freshwater, or drinking it either. In fact, he seemed to be always thirsty, ravenously so. Even his skin tended to become dry and flaky if not hydrated often enough.
So busy he was, watching around himself, capturing the vibrant shades of sunset that never ceased to amaze him as it cast everything in the same shade as the sky, that he lost his balance with his head gazing up at the clouds and fell headfirst onto the sand with his two mismatched feet.
"Taehyung!" A shrill scream of his name and a pair of feet came bounding over the white sand. Turning over, he flopped down and looked up at the sky, the clouds forming various shapes-- some familiar, some not, soon replaced by a worried face he had been now seeing for about one moon cycle.
A month.
It had been exactly a month, as she had claimed last night, feasting on roasted clam shells sprinkled with salt and lime sitting in front of the little bonfire they'd built on the cove. He was terrified of the fire. The way it engulfed everything and it was beautiful too, quite horrifically so.
It was warm. A warmth he needed and craved after being out of the ocean after for so long and a lustful need to drink the very same water he'd only breathed for all his life and gorge himself back inside it as his skin felt alien to even himself. Dry, hairy and itchy instead of the soft, smooth and slimy skin he had before, covered in scales at his lower half and gills to his throat.
It was all puzzling to him. How everything he knew and was used to, had now been suddenly taken away from him. But he felt it in his heart, he just knew it-- if he ever wanted to find the fate of his parents', know what transpired that day -- he'd have to understand himself first.
"Wow, that's some Rudolf's nose you're sporting," Y/N snorted, her eyes reflecting the oranges and pinks of the sunset, her russet brown hair now glowing much like the clouds above. She looked so unreal, in the faint glow, that it took more than a couple moments to gather his thoughts.
"Who's Rudolph?" He asked sitting up, rubbing away the sting on his nose and forgetting all about his scraped knees. He'd deal with them later, he had been falling on his feet a lot. Feet he didn't have a month prior. Walking was a task, and so was sitting, or standing even. It was always awkward while deciding which appendage went where. Which foot to rest his weight on, and which to keep active.
"It’s a reindeer. He had a red nose." She smiled, recalling the carol she had recited quite often every Christmas. It was her favorite until things went downhill. Something she didn’t want to be reminded of, ever again.
"A reindeer?" He asked, his head tilted in child-like curiosity, lips being worried underneath sharp teeth. Despite turning human, he still retained some of his marine features. And then his beautiful turquoise eyes lit up as if he had solved a rubrics cube.
"Santa's reindeer! I heard about those tales." Nodding to himself, he bit lip harder, trying to stop his smile from growing any further and failing to do so when his eyes met mine, a light shade of pink flushed the apples of his cheek and his ears an adorable pink.
Realizing the compromising position she was in, Y/N jumped back, straightening her white top and averting her eyes to his blistered feet. He had been walking everywhere without any slippers, something about losing his balance more if he wore extra things on his feet. He preferred going natural, bare feet, still trying his best to get used to having human legs.
It took him about a week to even stand on his own feet without support. The first day they woke up together, the first sunrise, wasn’t all that amazing finding that he was human again.
As the Sun reached higher into the sky, he felt his skin get drier and the itch unbearable. Scratching his dull pale skin that once shimmered under the light, he breathed heavily, gulping, eyes wide and jaw slack. He felt... Different. Unnatural. His throat raw and parched, even his teeth felt weird as he ran his heavy and dry tongue across his mouth. Not as sharp as before but sharp still.
"Tae, look at me." Cupping his cheeks, she made him face her. His unfocused eyes stared back blankly. "What's wrong?"
"Water". Even speaking one word hurt his throat and he bent down as violent coughs shook his body. He wondered if his human had cursed him to eternal suffering if this was his demise. If this was his parents' demise.
But soon the thought was forgotten as soft hands soothed his back, rubbing it to take away the sting of his raw throat, and now, newly formed lungs. Or maybe they were always there, waiting to be used. He did breathe out of water before.
The itching and tingling were back again, with more vengeance this time. Clawing at his back, he breathed a sigh of relief as the itch was momentarily relieved only to yelp as he drew blood and it smelled the same, yet was thicker, darker and warmer when he brought his fingers in front of his eyes.
Sniffing at the blood, he confirmed not much had changed, except he was drying inside out. Scared, and desperate he looked at his human seated right beside him as she shared an equally horrified and guilty look in her eyes and then she scrambled forwards.
"There's no water. Let me help you into the sea." Tugging onto his slippery hands, she helped him onto his feet and as his body tilted forward, she held onto his abs trying her best to support his weight instead of gawking at his naked half.
Breathing heavily, he stood by the edge of the boat, looking down at the ocean below that made the boat sway and his eyes widened. Stepping back with a jerk, he bumped into her and together they fell down onto the deck with a groan. He felt his blood run cold and his skin breaks out a sweat. Weird. Humans....were weird.
Bringing his hands right in the front of his eyes and shielding them from the harsh Sun; he sobbed, his shoulders shaking along with his chest.
"It doesn't want me back... It’s scary. I don't have what it takes to survive in there anymore."
"How else?" Looking around, she tried finding something. Something... To hold water. She soon spotted a bucket and ran towards it, almost falling on her way over. "I knew I'd kept it somewhere after cleaning all day."
Picking it up, she sprinted to the edge of the boat and bent as far as she could with the bucket in hand. Filling it up halfway with water, she walked the rest of the way back to him. "Here, try drinking."
When he didn't raise his head, like she had expected him to; she heaved a sigh and poured a little water over his flaking red skin. Hoping against all odds, it soothed his skin. He belonged to the ocean, surely that was the kind of water he needed.
A scream of agony shook her to the core. He looked up at her in betrayal and pain, his eyes watering, her figure looked like a fogged up shadow, yet, he glared at her as if she had done the worst crime humanely possible.
His eyes then lost its turquoise sheen and turned black his back straightening and he opened his mouth once again, much wider this time and wailed. His voice was shrill, hopeless and painful. It made her ears hurt, to the point she was absolutely certain they would bleed. But it was her heart that hurt more. She had truly gone and taken away everything from the lad. If only she didn't ask him to stay.
“Are you really sure?” She asked him after a moment. A moment too long where he had relived the reason he was absolutely sure he didn’t ever want anything to do with the ocean.
Regarding him, she noticed how his back stiffened and straightened at her question. It wasn’t much, really, but she knew how terrifying the ocean must be to him now that he didn’t have his fins, tail or gills.
And what he did have, didn’t cooperate with him most of the time. She had front row tickets to him learning to walk and talk like a human.
Would he truly ever be able to live like one? She doubted the notion. He could only pretend to blend in with a species he wasn’t a part of. But he could never truly be happy.
“I’m sure. I want to be with you, not alone, in the vast expanse.” He said with such conviction, you’d think he was only declaring his love for a certain flavor of ice cream and not his life’s one of the biggest decisions. Actually, technically, even choosing ice cream flavors is hard. You can never pick favorites with just one flavor. There’s just way too many good ones to try.
She sighed, her hands fisted by her side, hidden away from his line of sight, “Taehyung.” She breathed out, “As sweet as the thought is, just try, I’ll save you if anything goes wrong.”
“But why?” He whispered, tired of the same conversation, “Why do you keep pushing me away?”
Of all things he would retort with, she hadn’t expected him to ask her that. Over the month they had known each other, it wasn’t just his clumsy self she saw. She saw him grow from a person who hated humans to someone who sympathized with them. Though, he still was very much annoyed.
She had a certain fondness for him too. He was like a child, full of wonder and enthusiasm. But she never thought he was insecure. Sure, he lived alone most of his life, had his parents taken away from him without a confirmation of what exactly happened to them. She wouldn’t be surprised if it left behind a scar that would never heal.
But he had to face the ocean once again. It was his home, his life. She couldn’t bear to take it away from him. Even if she liked his company, even if she loved when he smiled, his presence made her life a million times better.
But she had to make sure, just this once, if he was completely done with the ocean, or if it was just him being scared. Where did this stem from? Of course, it wasn’t just her being paranoid.
He was a professional when it came to white lies. Anything he didn’t like, he would say mermen are allergic to it, or that it would be poisonous. He even went as far as claiming a certain height would kill him as he belonged deep into the ocean.
But, he still loved grilled cheese despite claiming it was poison; climbed to the peak of the hills near the ocean, despite claiming it would kill him; and, yes, the classic, he ate all the greens despite saying he was allergic to them. Truly, he was a child who came up with ridiculous notions just to avoid trying new things.
Yet… she had a doubt. What if, it wasn’t the same this time? She still had to try. At least, walking on seawater if nothing more. She couldn’t just give up halfway.
“Because I see your pain”, she expressed, coming closer to him on her knees and held onto his trembling hands, “every day, you’re hiding those tears away from me.”
Tracing his palm, she flipped it to the other side and brought it closer to her mouth, kissing his wrist. “I see your faded scars, I see how much you hate failing, I see it all.”
“Please.” She whispered. Hoping against all odds he wouldn’t be stubborn anymore. She would be by his side, through it all.
Sighing, he closed his eyes, feeling her lips on his skin, reveling in it and then snatched his hand away as soon as he felt a stirring, somewhere, that wasn’t his heart.
Of all things human he had got used to, he still couldn’t quite bring himself to adjust to having genitals that worked completely differently.
Mermen, well, they just had to spray their semen on the eggs, and their appendages never really worked any differently at odd times of the day. The human body truly was a piece of work. Without him even allowing it to, it was aroused and sought a mate. Not just that, sometimes, he really had to wonder-- what did he see? What did he touch? What’s going on down there?
It was endless guessing and apparently, it was rude to be hard. The many times he had to hide, he had lost count of that already.
Crossing his legs, he shied away from her touch, earning an odd look from her. Biting his lips, he contemplated, it wasn’t that he was scared of the ocean, he was terrified. The first day she had poured salt water on him, it stung like hell and he felt his clawed marks fade away instantly. There was something about the water and himself, something magical, he couldn’t quite understand and he was scared he’d fade away like his scar if he jumped into the water.
What if he turned to foam like he was meant to? As the only living child of his parents, he couldn’t afford to die so easily. His parents’ only wish was for him to live healthy and happy. And if that was beside a human, pretending to be a human, he didn’t see any fault with it. He was happy.
Sure, he missed his parents, he missed swimming in the depths of the ocean, but he had his curiosity about humans sated, he had found someone he could trust, he had found himself a home. With her, by her side. It was okay if he couldn’t go for a swim, as long as he stayed with her. The freshwater pools would do, just like this morning when he went swimming in one.
“Fine”, he stretched his arms above his head; twisting the kinks on his neck, once to the left, then to the right; and smiled satisfied as it cracked loudly. “Let’s go for a swim at four in the morning. Before the fishermen come to crowd the ocean”
Jumping up in glee, she tackled him in a hug. Squeezing his lithe body to herself, she breathed in his soft scent of the ocean. Closing her eyes, she listened to his heartbeat, trying her best to match her breathing to its rhythm as the last rays of the Sun, bathed them in a faint lavender glow.
“If I die, it’s on you,” Taehyung whispered, holding onto her frail body tighter against his own. If he could, he’d fuse their bodies together. He enjoyed her warmth, her cheerfulness, her optimism and most of all—her soul. He just wanted to be close to her at all times. Human or not, she was just perfect, in every which way to him.
Stiffening, she bit her lips, contemplating her next words. He could have been joking, of course, he could, but the tone of his voice didn’t have the usual brusqueness to it. It was rather soft, like silk, and she wasn’t sure if it was his nervousness or true feelings.
If only she could read minds! What she wouldn’t give to have that power right about now. But such whimsical wishes were dangerous. No. She’s happy just as she is, she should really stop making wishes out of the blue.
One such wish lead to Taehyung lose his own identity. And it was nothing but her own fault. Her own greed. Her own loneliness.
“Sure. Just help me plan how to hide your body first” She whispered and looked up from his chest to meet his unamused eyes. Her eyes were twinkling like the first few stars in the sky. Bright and beautiful. Caressing her cheek, he felt it again.
The stirring in his heart. He wanted her, he needed her. But he couldn’t quite describe this need he had to hold her in his arms. The need to make her his own. While he knew his kind never held such profound feelings for the other. They chose their mates for breeding sure, they even chose mates to spend their lives with, but nothing was permanent.
Yet, when it came to her…
He wanted so much more than to share idle talk about everyday things. So much more than to sleep next to her. So much more…. Then just to hold her in his arms. She was just where he wanted her, it wasn’t enough, and he wanted more. So much more.
She waited for him to either get her joke or be offended, but instead, she was met with deafening silence. If it weren’t for the seagulls or the ocean roaring behind him, she’d have gone mad being scrutinized under his watchful gaze. He was still as if he were made of stone, yet his body was warm, his skin soft and his breath on her forehead warm, inviting.
His lips looked so pink and soft, she licked her own, her breath picking up when his gaze dropped to her own lips, gaze darkening and jaw ticking. He was controlling himself, she could tell from the bruising grip he held her in. But for what?
“Taehyung?” She whispered, hoping to sound confident, and felt betrayed by her own vocal chords when her voice broke halfway, making her sound far more high pitched than she’d intended and a beautiful full blown smile bloomed in his lips.
Even though the spell was broken, they were both relieved it didn’t escalate, yet frustrating for the very same reason. They’d not only become close and fond of each other but were now skirting the dangerous waters of lust and want for the forbidden.
“Let’s just get some food, Y/N”
•❅──────✧❅✦❅✧──────❅•
“Ready?” Her voice asked behind me, and I wish I could assure her. It wasn’t that I didn’t lie, I just didn’t want to now, not when my life really was at risk, not when I wasn’t sure of the unknown.
“I’m so not ready right now”, I said, my voice quivering and was shocked to hear the tinkling sound of her laughter that sounded like the wind chimes in every quaint little bistro we visited along the shore.
I couldn’t even blame her, I sounded ridiculous even to myself. I had nobody but myself to blame when it came to getting myself into sticky situations.
“It’s okay, Taehyung.” She rested a hand on my shoulder, her hand too cold to the touch, but I bared with it. She only wanted to comfort me. “I figured you’d never be ready for it”
Looking down at the water, I gulped once again. It had been about a hot minute since we stood here hidden away from civilization on her boat in a little cove among the huge volcanic rocks. The sky was at its darkest, not even a single star could be seen, and so was the ocean.
I knew from experience, no monsters lurked there. I could probably swim the expanse of it blindfolded —it was really, really close to the colorful coral reefs where I spent my childhood in.
It was then I realized where my fear stemmed from. I wasn’t scared of the ocean, or of dying either. I was scared of not even leaving behind a mark that showed I was here, I was alive. Something that proved my existence. I was scared of never having accomplished a story to tell of my own. I hadn’t achieved absolutely anything. Heck, I didn’t even know what happened to my parents fifteen odd years back.
But, right now, by her side, I decided I didn’t need it. Not at the cost of my misery, and certainly not at the cost of my unhappiness. I don’t think that’s what my parents would have wanted for me. To live like a human on land, trying to find them and disregard me completely. I was a fool to think that was what I was meant to do.
“Y/N…” I turned to her, taking her hand in mine. “If I don’t do the dolphin jump within minutes of drowning, know that I’ve turned to sea foam. That’s our fate.”
Gulping, she looked down at our joined hands. Slowly tracing the raised veins on my hands. As I felt her hands tremble inside my own, Hands of mine, that weren't quite the same as before. I pulled her close by her soft, supple hands and held onto her.
If I died, I hoped she found someone who’d be worthy of her love, care and attention. If not, I’d make sure she’s mine. I loved her.
There.
I admit it. I loved her. I loved the person she was. Selfless, patient and amusing. She was just everything I’d ever needed in a mate. I didn’t care anymore, whatever species I’d be, I’d spend my life loving her, protecting her and doing whatever it takes to make her happy, by my side.
But I wouldn’t tell her that just yet. I need to be sure what I am and know how to be with her. I need to find myself first before I can love her. Be someone she can lean on.
“You’ll be back, Taehyung.” She sniffed on my chest, holding me tighter by the waist. “I just know it.”
Letting go of her, I faced dark water once again. Taking a deep breath, I clenched my fists and wiggled my toes, so far, every part of my body was still working just fine. Without looking behind me, I closed my eyes and jumped. The couple of moments when I was suspended in air, I felt like I was flying. The wind was still, and it felt like I sliced through it straight into the water below.
Hitting the surface hurt, it wasn't soft, and I knew that. I was familiar with that. And yet, I underestimated the feeling of splashing on water. It was surprisingly not cold at all, it wasn't warm either. It was just the right temperature and I loved it.
It was as if I was in a desert and had suddenly found an oasis. The thirst I had experienced for over a month had finally been quenched. My parched throat felt moist once again, I could breathe easier and closing my eyes, I let the feeling wash over me.
I was home.
Wiping my eyes, I smiled up at her and saw her shoulders slump in relief as she peered out of the edge of her boat. Soon a beautiful smile bloomed on her pretty lips, and she waved at me to come back. Nodding, I tried bringing my feet up to float properly and swim back to her. Like I did countless times in the swimming pools. But, I couldn't. They felt heavy, numb even.
Diving underwater, I tried seeing what was wrong and immediately regretted it. My skin felt boiling hot-- like I was burning from the inside. The hot flashes made me squirm and flinch; and, as a human, I couldn’t even breathe underwater. Was this the end? Was I turning to foam?
I just couldn’t give up yet but I felt my body slowly give up. I lost the focus in my eyes, all I could see was blurred masses of black ink in murky brownish water. I felt myself sink deeper and deeper as a film covered my eyes, making me see things clearer, brighter even. Blinking them, I tried making sense of the new sensations I was feeling all over my body, all at once. Spreading my hands in front of me, I could see the gaps between my fingers being filled, making them webbed once again.
It was then I realized, I could feel my feet again, but it felt more familiar, heavier. And as I looked below, I saw my tail grow back again, the legs joining together and scales forming over them. It didn't hurt one bit, the excruciating pain of being overly heated from the inside was now almost gone. What remained was a dull thrum of tingling all over my skin which felt refreshing and new. I was back to being a merman again- gills on my neck, ribs; and fins along my forearms and tail.
Overjoyed, I swam around the many little fish, squealing and gliding alongside the turtles, trying out my newly formed tail and fins. Oh, how splendid it felt, to be alive once again.
Swimming at full speed, I went towards the surface where the faint light of the first rays of sunshine could be seen and then I leaped once my arm broke the surface, creating a beautiful arc over the boat where Y/N sat sobbing into her hands.
The water along my body and tail falling down in rivulets and showering her in fresh, clear ocean water. Smirking at her flabbergasted expression, I winked and dived to the other side of the boat.
With a resounding splash, I cut through the surface of the water once again, startling the butterfly and tang fish that were swimming about looking for morning catch. Laughing, I raised my head above water and ran my hand through the wet tresses, feeling my hair become more silky and smooth.
“Thank you!” I screamed, cupping my lips. I just couldn’t wipe the stupid grin off my face and watch her look at me with awed eyes, it just grew even bigger. Swimming towards her, I floated on next to her boat on my back, running my hand across my chest.
“You know, I never thought I’d say this, but you were right.” I agreed, biting my lips to keep my smile away, “Thank you, really, for persuading me to come back.”
“It’s nothing, Taehyung. I’m sure you’d have done the same for me.” She said, nodding as if making herself believe it too.
“Actually, you’re too stubborn.” I pointed at her. It was true, she never listens. Ever. Unless I prepared a whole speech with pros and cons. “ I’d have just thrown you into the ocean while you slept.”
“Hey!”
•❅──────✧❅✦❅✧──────❅•
That day, I chose to stay back in the ocean while she took the boat to the next town over for supplies. I missed her in the three days that I didn’t see her.
Her presence had been like a rock to me. Something to lean on, something that was there, but I didn’t really feel bothered by it. In the one month, that I’d spent with her, every moment was special and beautiful. Even sleeping next to her was a novelty for me.
I missed it all. The shared meals, where we cooked together and fed each other. The little human jokes I made, the mermaid innuendos she came up with. Every time she was distracted and looked the prettiest of all girls I’d ever come across. The times when she came fresh out of the shower, her skin dewy and soft, to the point I wanted nothing more than to kiss her skin and make it more flushed and beautiful. The moments when we got lost in each other’s eyes and I had to hold myself back from tackling her then and there. The moments where even the silence felt comforting, the moments where I wanted nothing more than to kiss her silly and watch her lose herself in me. But I held back.
I held back then because my fate wasn’t in my hands. Because back then, I wasn’t sure where I belonged—the land or the ocean. But, now I do. Now, I do know. I know my place is right beside her. In the ocean, or staying afloat on it, living on a boat. I’d do it all if that’s what it takes. I’d explore the world by her side, I’d always wanted to too. It was my dream too.
And for that, I had brought along the things I deemed necessary. Most of them were collected from the clutter humans left behind. But I found them interesting and important. Hopefully, Y/N wouldn’t make me throw them away. They held some precious memories of mine.
Some of them were gifts for her. Shiny chains, rings, hair accessories and other things—they meant nothing more than objects lost in the ocean to me. But, I knew, for her, they’d mean the world. They were antique and made of precious metals and stones that shone and shimmered like the night sky. I wanted to see her smile when I gave them to her. I wanted her to wear them for me.
I couldn’t buy her things, I didn’t even have an identity of my own. What I had, however, was knowledge of the ocean no human could ever possess and treasures hidden miles below the surface that no human could reach.
Oh, I figured how to transform too. I was a merman under the ocean. When completely submerged, my body transformed itself to mold to its surroundings and when on land, dried out completely, my humane organs became apparent and I adapted to the surroundings accordingly. It was weird the first few times as it was painful.
But the more I tried, I found my way about it. Or maybe, I just got used to feeling the pain and the heat. Whatever the case, I now knew how to survive in both land and water and somehow more than the fact that it elated me, I was terrified.
Humans were greedy by nature. They always wanted what they couldn’t have. I was scared. What if one day, I wasn’t as careful?
What if they found out about me? Would they cut me open and find out the secrets to my regenerating tissues? Or would they keep me alive as a display and watch me as I struggled inside a cage?
I wondered if this was why my parents never told me I was capable of living out of the water. I wonder if this was why they weren’t as scared when pulled out of the water. Maybe they were humans now. Maybe they were alive and well.
Or maybe in a lab somewhere, or maybe a part of the ocean. Lost to the waves.
As I sat here, waiting for her to come back, I only hoped I didn’t lead us to a fate there was no coming back from.

Shoreline Diaries
Waves sloshed over Maleah’s tiny pink surfboard, the dawning Kauai sun warming her brown calves and forearms. She had been learning to surf for about three weeks, so naturally, she was already an expert. She had ridden with her father a dozen times already. She could manage a go by herself. As she paddled out onto the choppy waves, she saw rows of trophies on her mantle and medals around her eight-year-old neck. She was too busy looking at her fantasies to see how rough the surf was getting.
She bobbed like a cork on the vast, blue ocean, and the further she paddled out, the more water washed over her. She slid on the slick surface of her board but managed to stay on top of it, if just barely. This was fine, this was just because she was going out further. She’d been doing good; it was time for a bigger challenge. She was ready. Maleah was a born surfer, and the ocean was in her blood. This is what she had woefully misinformed herself.
When she got out way too far, she saw the great swell of the wave that she would set out to conquer. She got up to her knees, turning her board to face the shore. She heard the rush of the water as it crested over the wave, felt herself rise. She hopped up onto her knees, waiting for the right moment. Then, when she felt like she was at the crest of the wave, she hopped up to her feet, savoring that sweet feeling of standing, triumphant, as the queen of the seas.
But it was fleeting, much more fleeting than the other times when she’d practiced with her father. Something was wrong. She wasn’t gliding gently into shore as she had before. Was she too far forward? The nose of her surfboard tipped forward and she went tumbling face first into the water. The tail of the board kicked up in the air and smacked her squarely in the back of the head, sending stars flashing across her vision.
The world went quiet as she plunged under the surface, her head spinning and aching. She couldn’t for the life of her figure out which way was up, and she kicked and paddled pitifully in no particular direction. Her lungs screamed as she swallowed panicked gulps of water. She couldn’t see the trophies and medals anymore. Now, all she could think was, I’m going to die.
Just as her vision started to get hazy, she felt a pair of hands scoop her up under her arms. With incredible speed, she shot toward the surface, her head breaking with a huge splash. She coughed up what felt like gallons of water, her chest and eyes burning. The hands tugged her along as she floated there wheezing, sending her toward the shore. In half the time it had taken her to paddle out, she was in the shallows.
Maleah heard a soft, high pitched grunt when she was pulled into the sand, and it was then that she first thought to look at who had rescued her. That was not her father’s grunt. She lay flat on her back, the tide gently washing up to her ears. When she managed to pry her eyes open, she saw another little girl hovering over her. At least, she looked like a little girl. Maleah thought that it was the bright sun in her eyes that made everything look green, but when they adjusted, she found that no, this girl’s skin really was the color of seafoam and her hair the color of seaweed. Her eyes looked like the purple coral reefs Maleah had seen when diving. She blinked half a dozen times, but the colors stayed the same.
It wasn’t until she pushed herself up to her elbows and the water drained out of her ears that she realized that the girl had said something to her. “Are you okay?”
Maleah looked at this green girl, and now that she’d sat up, she found that the girl’s lower half was a shimmering, scaly, turquoise tail swishing around under the water. Her tailfin looked like a satin scarf had gotten washed away. “You’re a mermaid,” she said simply, as if she’d solved an easy math problem.
The mermaid smirked. “Luckily for you. Weren’t you ever taught not to go surfing alone?” Maleah’s dark brown eyes started to get shiny with tears, and her lips trembled just a tiny bit, so the mermaid didn’t press it further. “Are you okay?” she asked again instead.
Maleah ran a hand on the back of her head where the board had hit, and she could feel a tender welt raising under her black hair. When she looked at her hand, the ghost of blood ran down her palm in little pink droplets. “I don’t know. My head hurts a lot… but it’s not, like, gushing blood, so…” She closed her eyes, breathing deep, the soreness of the saltwater in her lungs ebbing away with each exhalation. “What’s your name?”
The mermaid grinned wide, rolling onto her tummy and propping her chin up on her webbed hands. The water washed all the way up to her chin. “Anueanue! My mommy said she named me that because my eyes are purple instead of green like the rest of me, and it reminded her of a rainbow. I’m the only one in my family with purple eyes. My mommy says it’s what makes me special. But everyone I know calls me Anue, so you can call me that, too, if you want.” The words came out fast and soaked in enthusiasm; Anue didn’t get to meet very many new people.
“Well, thank you, Anue. I could be a lot worse off if it weren’t for you.” Her muscles slowly relaxed as the adrenaline drained out of them, and she leaned forward on her knees to stave off lightheadedness.
Anue beamed, proud of herself and tickled to death that she’d made a new friend. “You’re welcome! You just have to promise me that if you see me drying out on the shore that you’ll shove me back in the water, okay?”
Maleah giggled. “Deal.” They shook on it and then marveled at the temperature differences between each others’ hands. They spoke at length about their respective worlds, how things in the ocean compared to things on land. It was fun for both of them to be able to talk about themselves at length and have someone listening who was fascinated by the information. It was a gift they seldom received. They had a surprising amount in common for being from such different worlds. They both loved singing, dolphins, and building sandcastles, even though those things looked a little different in execution.
They talked until Maleah’s parents woke up and found her sitting there alone on the beach. It was in the brief second while she turned her head to see them bounding the hill toward her that Anue slipped away under the water, and when Maleah looked back, she caught just the last swish of a satiny tail. Between her disheveled look and her surfboard floating out on the waves, it wasn’t hard for her parents to guess what had happened. Her mother was furious, but the scolding was offset by her father’s sobs of simultaneous relief and worry. All of her claims of seeing a green mermaid with purple eyes went totally ignored in the wake of all the lectures and hugs and tears. As they ushered her back inside, showering her forehead with kisses, she watched the waves wash up on the shore, unsure if the shimmering green shape floating just beneath the surface was waving goodbye at her.
Any time that Maleah ventured into the water alone, Anue was there to meet her. Countless sunny days were spent swimming around in the shallows, visiting coral reefs and talking about their days. They traded trinkets to keep in their respective rooms. Anue gave abandoned shells, sand dollars, and pearls while Maleah gave pink plastic ponies, princess-themed combs, and superhero action figures. The became each other’s diaries, swimming out to meet each other when heartbreak, good fortune, or dreams struck. Maleah’s parents got used to her talk about her stories of her imaginary mermaid friend Anue. As she continued to talk about her in her teens, they figured it was her way of asking for alone time to process her thoughts. As long as they could see her from their back door, they were fine with her “going to visit Anue.”
On an overcast day in late July, seventeen-year-old Maleah paddled out to their favorite meeting spot on her surfboard. She strapped the board leash onto her wrist and rolled off to sit on the sand bar, letting the board drift gently around her. The water washed over her shoulders in gentle waves, and she searched the surface for Anue. She saw her just a second too late. A wriggling green shape whooshed toward her, and she managed to take a breath before a pair of mermaid's arms dunked her in a hug. Their heads broke the surface giggling, and Maleah gave her friend a proper hug.
“Mal, it’s been too long! You’ve got to poke your head out the back more often. It’s not like I can text you,” Anue said, flipping a sopping green lump of hair over her shoulder.
“I know. It’s been crazy the past couple of weeks. Between the paperwork and packing up and stuff. I’ve been meaning to come out here, but I just…” Her eyes fell. She didn’t have an end to that sentence.
Anue didn’t want her to finish the sentence, either. She put on a bright smile. “It’s fine. You’re here now. So we got to hang out at least once before you leave. So, are you excited? It’s so far away! Though, I guess everything is far away from Kauai.”
Maleah breathed a huge sigh. The six-hour flight to Oakland and then the interview at Berkeley had been the longest day of her life. “It is really far. And cold. And they don’t really have a beach. Just a wharf. But the shellfish was pretty good. You’d like their clams.”
“Ooh, sounds nice! You’ll have to bring me some back when you come home on break. Because nothing travels better than shellfish. The other passengers on the plane will love you.” Anue gave her friend a playful nudge and got a small smile in return. The dread that seemed to be choking Maleah started to grip Anue as well, and she swallowed to combat it. “But this is a really big deal, isn’t it? Like, isn’t it a really hard school to get into?”
Maleah gave a huge nod, her eyes wide. “I had to write a million essays and get about a hundred thousand reference letters and raise all of the scholarship money in the world. It’s normally rich kids whose families have gone there since the dawn of time. But I got lucky, I guess.” As she thought about leaving her beach, her sun, her mermaid, she hardly felt lucky. She knew that going would open a lot of doors for her in the future, but at that moment, the only door she wanted to open was the one at the back of her house.
Anue looked at her friend’s downcast face and decided that a change of subject was in order. “Hey, listen. I want to go out to the reef. I saw this beautiful empty conch shell down there, and I want to grab it before some hermit crab does. What do you say? C’mon.”
Maleah gave her first real smile of the day. She told her the idea sounded great as she climbed back up onto her surfboard. She paddled out to the near reef, Anue swimming along the surface beside her. They talked about how their weeks had gone, including the drama of the green sea turtles who wouldn’t leave Anue’s little brother alone and the girls at Maleah’s school who were jealous of her test scores. They knew the path by heart, even without looking below the surface. After tethering the leash onto her ankle, Maleah slipped off her board and dove to see the colorful wonderland beneath the waves. Anemones and cauliflower coral shined in the sunlight and tiny schools of fish darted away as they drew near. Anue almost blended in with the beautiful scene, her dark green hair floating behind her head like the forking fingers of the coral she swam around. Maleah dove as deep as she could, letting bubbles slip out of her lips every once in a while. After making most of a circle around the clump, she saw the spiky, bright pink shell buried in a hole in the reef. It was perfect, totally whole and vibrant in color. She nudged Anue and pointed, who was already on her way toward it. Maleah’s lungs complained at her, so she decided to go up for a breath.
She folded her arms on her surfboard, gently treading water as she waited for Anue to come up. The shell broke the surface first, rising from the depths and held aloft like the Statue of Liberty’s torch in her hand. “Ta-da!” she proclaimed. She propped herself up on the opposite side of the surfboard to present the beautiful shell to her friend. Maleah took it as if it were made of glass and turned it every which way, partly to admire it and partly to make sure she wasn’t going to meet an angry conch. “A pretty shell for a pretty lady.”
“Thank you, Anue,” she said, her voice soft and near tears. “It’s going to have a prominent spot on my desk in the dorm. It’s the queen of shells. It’ll tower over all the other shells you’ve given me as their rightful ruler.”
Anue smirked. “Good. You have to take every single shell I’ve ever given you. Otherwise, I’ll be totally heartbroken and think our friendship is a sham.” She sent a playful splash at her.
Maleah snorted, shaking her head. “Believe me, I’m going to be taking every last thing that reminds me of home. It’s going to be so bleak and gray there. I’m going to need them to remember what color is.”
Anue’s smirk turned into a full-blown mischievous grin as she disappeared under the water for a second. Confusion twisted Maleah’s face, and she craned her head around the surfboard to see what she was up to. She reappeared on same side of the board, holding something behind her back. “Well, if you’re looking for things to remember me by, then I think I have just the thing for you.” She brought it around front to reveal a necklace made of clamshells strung together with a braided cord of seaweed. The shells were perfectly shaped and alternated between pure white and deep purple surrounding a large, striped one in the center. “You may have to replace the cord eventually, but…”
The sight of the beautiful thing was too much, and Maleah had to throw her arms around her friend’s neck. She thanked her a hundred times, tears rolling down her cheeks. All of the anxiety of the coming weeks spilled out in her tears, and as long as she had this amazing friend, it would all be okay. And as Anue tied the wonderful necklace around her neck, Maleah felt like she would be with her even as she left the sea.
They swam and laughed and cried until sunset when Maleah regretfully left the ocean with pruned fingers and red cheeks. She promised she would visit on every possible break, that she would write everything down so she could remember every detail to share with her when they met again, and Anue promised to do the same. Sobs wrecked their chests as Maleah went inside, knowing that they would see each other again but wondering how they would make it through the next few months without their shoreline diaries.
Maleah did well enough in her first semester, though the constant longing for the beach made her skin ache. She wore Anue’s necklace every day and got compliments on it frequently. When asked where she’d gotten it, she’d always tell them her best friend back home had given it to her. She talked about her in vague terms all the time; almost everything brought up some anecdote to share with her classmates in conversation. People thought she was generally cool, if a little distant.
But Maleah became the talk of the campus when she jumped off the wharf, screaming that she’d seen a mermaid.

My second and final full day in Tokyo was visiting Disney Sea. The friend I was staying with decided to join me since she was also on vacation and we made our way to the park. We had decided to try something called Disney Bounding, even though it was late September and the parks let adults dress up in actual cosplay of characters. It’s really cool to witness. My friend and I decided to go for villains because we believed Disney Sea was the park that was taken over by villains and maybe we’d see the whole park transformed with a larger Halloween influence than I had last year at Tokyo Disneyland. Disney bounding is putting together an outfit that is inspired by a character to wear at the parks since about 80% of the year adults can’t dress up. My friend chose Scar from The Lion King and I picked Captain Hook from Peter Pan.
I had a lot of fun figuring out an outfit, though to be honest, I failed my first attempt. South Korea has a lot of  really nice underground malls where clothing is a bit cheaper and I spent an afternoon with a friend walking around trying to put something together. I really proud with my finds only to go home and realize that despite being elastic and looking like they’d fit that they didn’t actually. The downfall to shopping in the underground where you can’t try anything on. Lesson learned. I’m still proud of what I ended up with but as family and friends have pointed out I also ended up looking a bit like Carmen Sandiego. It was a happy coincidence.

picture of the monorail with Mickey Mouse shaped windows and gates that say “35 Happiest Celebration”
Once we arrived at Maihama station we had to take the monorail to Disney Sea. The monorail has four stops.
1: Resort Gateway: This is where you catch the train back to Tokyo.
2: Tokyo Disneyland Station
3: Bayside
4: Tokyo Disney Sea
The monorail isn’t free. It’s 260 yen per ride and you can get a day pass or a two day pass. You can also use the same pass that you might use in Tokyo for the regular trains and buses. I hoped that there was a special Disney one way ticket but there’s not. I had a Passimo (a transit card for Tokyo) which I should’ve just used instead. You can also walk to either park. I walked to Disneyland last year, but it was nice to take the monorail which was comfortable, played Disney music and was very cute.

Once at Disney Sea we headed to the bathroom so my friend could add the finishing touches to her Scar look. Which included us spending a half hour while she drew the iconic scar on her face with lipstick and eye liner. We took our cute tickets which she’d gotten at a Disney store in Tokyo and headed in. I went straight through but my friend got stopped. There’s a list of do’s and don’ts for the park and despite being on the website it wasn’t anywhere we’d looked before going. To save you time because I couldn’t find it easily while navigating the site you can find rules for dressing up here. We spent nearly an extra half hour waiting for a staff member who was kind enough to run off and get my friend make up remover.

Once in the park we looked at the schedule for the day. We arrived early enough to catch the main show we wanted to see “Villains World” but there was already a crowd before it started. Two! Hours! Early! Rather than wait with the crowd for two hours in the early morning sun we headed towards the back of the park towards the Lost River Delta to watch a show called “Out of Shadowland” at the Hangar. We were about an half hour early and there wasn’t too bad of a line. We got good seats and enjoyed the show which was a musical that was 100% in Japanese. I was expecting it to be a little bit like the Lilo and Stitch show I saw last year where it came with a translator but no. The plot is simple and it is possible to follow along. It’s about a group that goes into a woods in search of a special bird. A shy girl named Mei finds and follows the bird and becomes separated from the group and then finds herself in the “Shadowland” where she meets a deer spirit named Yuu. Yuu wants her to help save the world he lives in (with her magical powers) and defeat the evil bird but Mei just wants to go home. Through her adventure she finds courage and confidence. It was pretty to watch and fun, though as a note there is some flashing lights at various parts and possibly some parts that may be disturbing to very small children.

The last showing is on March 31st, 2019, after which a new musical will be performed at the Hangar stage. The show is about 25 minutes long. The schedule for the performances change occasionally but in general it seems to be performed about 5 times a day at the Hangar stage: 10:30,  12:00, 1:30,3:45, and 5:15 p.m.

Picture of Mermaid Lagoon, lots of blue and pink coral
After the show we headed to the Mermaid Lagoon to get lunch. Most of the Mermaid Lagoon is indoors in an area called Triton’s Kingdom. Inside Triton’s Kingdom is a very fluorescent space made up of coral mixed with a video arcade vibe. While there aren’t video games, there are tons of rides perfect for children. We weren’t there to ride any of the rides though and none of them really seemed like adult rides. They all seemed to be specifically activities for children. We headed towards the back to Sebastian’s Calypso Kitchen. This is a counter style restaurant where you order, pay and then go up to the counter where they’ll give you a tray with your food. We went here because according to the today page (which is 100% in Japanese) you can get some special Halloween treats.

My friend ordered their  スペシャルセットwhich was a seafood burger that was a scallop cream croquette with ratatouille sauce on a purple bun. She ordered it as a set so it came with a side of fries and a choice of drink for 990 yen. I misread the today page and thought that it was also the restaurant with Halloween non-seafood burger but it wasn’t. So instead I ordered a sausage pizza ソーセージピザ (700 yen) and their special Halloween drink calledメロンソーダ(ホイップクリーム&パイナップルシロップ)(380 yen) which was a melon soda with a whipped cream and pineapple syrup topped with little gummy candies in a very cute cup.

A picture of the inside neon lit dim Triton’s Kingdom inside facilities.
A beach version of Donald Duck surrounded by families and children trying to get pictures.
The seating was cute with little clam shell booths but like the rest of Triton’s kingdom it was very dimly lit. When we finished eating and were just enjoying our drinks my friend let out a scream, threw her arms out and then herself over the back of our clam shell booth. At first I thought she’d forgotten something she had to do for work or saw something upsetting, but then I spotted a Donald Duck wobbling past in snorkeling gear. I told her “go” and she bolted. It was probably the funniest part of the day and she managed to get some cute photos with the Donald Duck who was instantly swarmed on all sides by children, just like Pluto that was also wearing beachwear nearby.
After our trip to Triton’s Kingdom in the Mermaid Lagoon we headed to the Arabian Coast. While the Mermaid Lagoon is The Little Mermaid themed the Arabian coast is Aladdin themed. Here we rode Jasmine’s flying carpets which is a ride similar to Dumbo the flying elephant. Only for Jasmine’s flying carpet each carpet can seat up to four people, with two people up front and two in the back. The two sitting at the front get to control whether the carpet slowly moves up or slowly moves down. It’s a bit delayed but fun.

After the ride we stopped momentarily at a snack stand called Open Sesame to buy a pumpkin and maple churro. There was also a large line in the Arabian coast but for what I wasn’t exactly sure. It may have been for either the Agrabah Marketplace which boasts magic tricks as well as items for sale or Abuu’s bazaar which was a place to play carnival style games for an extra fee. Those were at least things in the area I assumed might’ve been the cause of the long line, but there is also a restaurant, some shows and a couple more rides that may have caused it.

Our next stop was the most exciting to me: Mysterious Island. Mysterious Island is located in the center of the park and is enclosed on all sides with paths leading in and out. It’s easy to spot from the rest of the park since a large portion of it is a volcano called Mount Prometheus. It’s 189 feet (57.61m) tall and occasionally belches out flame that can be seen and heard almost everywhere. Beneath this mammoth of a man-made volcano are two popular rides and a small cove to excite any steam-punk fan or better yet, anyone who enjoys the works of Jules Verne.

Jules Verne was a French author in the 1800’s to early 1900’s. He’s most well known for his science fiction adventure stories that are hinted at throughout the Mysterious Island. Actually even the name of this section of the park is the name of one of his novels, specifically his #12 novel in “The Extraordinary Voyages” series. The island is in fact the hide out of one of his characters Captain Nemo who is also found in his book Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (book #6) which shares a name with one of the rides on the Mysterious Island. The other ride is Journey to the Center of the Earth (book #3), which is another of Verne’s adventure novels.
We headed first to ride Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and made our way down underground and into a semi-long line with plenty to look at and enjoy. When it was time for us to board our crafts, small submarines that fit six, each set of two with their own window we were quite pleased. The ride was fun and felt in the same spirit as the book, a journey of exploration of the ocean with a bit of danger. Which really was the theme of both rides. It’s a similar style ride to the Peter Pan one found at the other parks.

I enjoyed the ride so much that I was ready to run across and under Mount Prometheus to get in line for Journey to the Center of the Earth. This was a bad idea. Outside Journey to the Center of the Earth are a lot of benches and places to sit. I should’ve sat. My feet were already hurting and the line ended up being 70 minutes. Which for park lines isn’t too long, I’ve been in line much longer before but the wait was disorienting. Unlike many rides at other Disney parks there weren’t any “From this point on your wait is___ minutes”. There also wasn’t any staff to ask. We were underground and there wasn’t much difference in things to look at. The line snaked around items and among other parts of the line to the point I didn’t know who else was behind me and who was in front of me to know where I was going next. That coupled with the pain in my feet was just torturous. I was about ready to throw in the towel when my friend spotted what she thought was the start to the ride. What she spotted in actuality were elevators that took us down further to where we entered another line, but this line at least we could see the special drilling device designed roller-coaster car. The ride was a lot of fun and the most intense roller coaster we managed to get on that day. Thankfully it had little places at the front of our seats to place bags and hats or anything we needed to store for fear of loosing. This was another ride that fit about six people.
These rides were a lot of fun and if you’re in a hurry it’s worth getting a fast pass for. We didn’t understand how fast passes worked and didn’t try to get any for the day. There should be fast pass ticket machines near the rides where you can scan your ticket and get a fast pass for a specific time period in which to return to the ride. Thankfully though our 70 minute wait was the longest we had for a ride that day.
After a short rest we left the Mysterious Island and headed down towards the Mediterranean harbor. The Mediterranean harbor is a lake area near the front of the park. This is where all parade like performances are held. We saw two from vastly different view points.  We caught “Villains World” from in front of the Zambini Brother’s Restorante near the Disney Sea Transit Steamer Line. The best place to catch shows is from the front stage however the seating here fills up over two hours before the show starts. The area we sat filled up about an hour before the show. I suggest bringing an umbrella or parasol while you wait and snacks. Because there were two of us, one of us would sit while the other would go off and get snacks. Since it was still hot out I made use of my electric fan. You can’t move much so I highly suggest bringing something to do or something to keep you either warm or cool depending on the weather. People also bring mats to sit on or collapsible chairs that they take down before the show starts.

Screen shot of Mediterranean Harbor with suggested viewing wait spots for the shows. The Yellow Star is where the main stage is and fills up nearly 2 hours or more before a show starts. The black and white stars are other stage spots where characters may disembark from boats as well as where dancers may appear. These don’t fill up nearly as quickly but still try to be there about an hour before the show starts.
I really loved the “Villains World” show. It was fun and entertaining and great to watch. We had good seats since we were right outside a mini side stage where the characters got off their ships to interact with the dancers that were dressed to match the villains. Part of the music was in English and a lot of what the villains said was in Japanese. It was a lot of fun.

This was however a point where I lost my friend for a bit. When the show ended and we gathered up our things she had to go file a complaint with the staff because of an altercation she had with one of the other guests sitting near her. It didn’t go so well and she was gone for about an hour. During this time, since I had no way of contacting her I wandered around the American Waterfront as quickly as I could before going to our meeting spot. There isn’t any wifi at Disney Sea which made me worry how we’d communicate if something happened while she filed her complaint. She also has a phone with very poor battery life which meant she might not have been able to contact me even if she’d wanted to to update me on what happened.

Big Band Beat at Broadway Music Theater
There are some cool things to do in the American Waterfront. You can watch “Big Band Beat” which is a musical performance with characters and dancing at the Broadway Music Theater. It’s thirty minutes with about 5 show times a day that may change depending on the day: 12:20, 1:50, 3:20, 5:20, and 6:50pm. There is reserved and non-reserved seating available depending on the time of day. Reserved seating is usually for orchestra seating and requires getting a seat via lottery. To enter the lottery you need to go to Biglietteria (located near Gondolier Snacks across from Lido Isle at the Mediterranean Harbor) and scan your ticket that you used to get into the park.  (Same as with getting a fast pass) Otherwise head to the Broadway Music Theater before the show to try and get a seat in one of the non-reserved spaces.
Also in the area is The Tower of Terror and a Dockside Stage which is where a twenty-five minute performance called “Hello New York” occurs. Performances happen about five times a day though they do change and sometimes there are less. Usually performances occur at 12:05, 1:35, 3:05, 5:15, and 6:45.
Toy Story Mania is another area in the American Waterfront. It’s similar to Abuu’s bazaar in that it’s mostly carnival games though there is a couple indoor rides. There’s also a beautiful park called the Waterfront Park which was a popular spot to get photos. I saw a ton of people wandering through the park getting pictures of their photos.
New York Deli
Halloween special set of prosciutto with apple sandwich, fries and drink (Kirin apple soda)
After this quick wandering through the American Waterfront I hurried to our meeting spot where the other Halloween sandwich was that I wanted to try. It was in one of the many restaurants on the American Waterfront, this one called New York Deli. The entrance was a little confusing since it wasn’t on the main street but instead around the corner from the main street. I had hoped it’d be a smallish deli where I could easily spot my friend but instead the shop was huge. I did a quick run through to make sure she wasn’t sitting and waiting for me and when I didn’t find her I ordered my meal, スペシャルセット, (1,150 yen) which was a prosciutto and apple sandwich set. I couldn’t remember what prosciutto (raw dry cured ham) was and thought it was just a regular deli meat until I took a bite and saw that it had an unsettling raw color and consistency. I’m not a huge fan of raw foods and despite everything, knowing that it’s meant to be that way just couldn’t really get over the texture. I picked at it, enjoyed my fries and my Kirin apple soda. About an hour later after being super anxious for awhile, my friend showed up and joined me. She didn’t have as much trouble finding me in the restaurant as I feared. We headed off to Port Discovery to ride Aquatopia and were pretty happy to see that it had a short line.
Tumblr media
Picture of Aquatopia building at night.
Aquatopia is split into two sections. It’s a water ride where you won’t get wet. You board a small craft that follows an under water track that spins and turns and goes around obstacle’s and water features that may make someone dizzy. It did make me a little dizzy at one point. We ended up enjoying it enough to ride it twice, trying each side of the ride. Afterwards we had just enough time to head back to the American Waterfront and catch the “Fantasmic!” show. We took the Disney Electric Rail that goes from American Waterfront to Port Discovery and back then hurried to the water to try and find a spot to watch the show.

It was fun and a bit like the one shown at Disney World under the same name. It stars “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” version of Mickey Mouse and includes many familiar Disney characters.
Disney Sea Transit Steamer Line from above

After the show we walked to the other side of the lake to catch the first Disney Sea Transit Steamer Line after the show. The Transit Steamer lines stop at various ports around the park. At each spot you can show a crew member your map and they’ll show you where the boat will let you off. Ours stopped at the Lost River Delta, the only spot we hadn’t really spent much time in and which we had run out of time to enjoy. There are two large attractions here Raging Spirits and Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Crystal Skull. Instead of exploring we hurried back in line and boarded the next Transit Steamer Line back to the Mediterranean Harbor. Riding it around was a beautiful and peaceful experience. We got to see the entire park from a different view and it was lovely. We were even able to catch site of the fireworks from the “Brand New Dream” show that starts at 8:30 every night.
Tumblr media

After exiting back at the Mediterranean Harbor it was close to closing time. We popped into one of the shops near the entrance to get souvenirs and I quickly learned that only one specific shop carries pins and it wasn’t near where we were. We were even in what the map stated was the shop with the largest selection of merchandise.
Utterly exhausted and with a couple souvenirs to share with friends and coworkers (Omiyage (お土産)) we boarded the monorail back to the train station. Utterly exhausted neither of us paid close attention to the stops assuming that it’d be awhile till we got off and thus missed our stop and had to ride the monorail around once more. We heard Resorts and tuned out when it continued on to say JR line. It was literally the next stop.
I feel like Disney Sea was a bit harder to navigate than Disneyland. You really need to plan what you’re going to do, especially if you want to watch any of the performances. Unlike other parks there isn’t a parade route that goes throughout the majority of the park that you can catch a decent view. Instead there’s only a man-made lake at the front where you have to be early in order to try and get a good spot. While it feels like there’s less to do at Disney Sea it’s much more spread out leading to rides having a long wait time that can very quickly eat away at your day and time. A lot of things also aren’t really explained in English, only a couple things on the map state: In Japanese only, or give warnings about strobe or flashing lights. If you don’t do a lot of preparation ahead of time you could be caught unaware. Visiting with characters is also a bit more difficult. While there are certain set character visits, our surprise Donald Duck and Pluto in swim gear isn’t along the list of character greetings on the English website, neither was Jafar which I spotted wandering around the Arabian Coast at one point. This meant my goal of finding a Captain Hook to take a picture with for my Disney Bound inspired outfit was a bust. The only time I spotted him was during the “Villains World” performance.
Disney Sea is just a little bit less festive than Disney Land. It wasn’t taken over by villains like I had expected and the amount of decorations was a lot less. Both parks aren’t as festive as my Halloween loving self would like but, each have about one good Halloween performance and some decorations. I think Disney Land, though, wins out by having the Haunted Mansion turned Nightmare Before Christmas.

Another thing happening while I was there was the 35 anniversary of the parks. Throughout the parks were special Mickey Mouse statues that reflected the area of the park they were in. I didn’t find them all, but they can be found on the map. It felt a bit like a scavenger hunt when I did stumble upon one.
Disney Sea My second and final full day in Tokyo was visiting Disney Sea. The friend I was staying with decided to join me since she was also on vacation and we made our way to the park.

Return of the ‘research’. Episodes 13 and 14. It’s actually been a bit since I’ve watched anything/taken notes, and the notes for ep 13 - 16 are backlogged. I don’t remember what I wrote, lol.
Episode 13: Mermaid’s Ritual
1. Taki is just a clam. Not a mer-clam or an anthro clam. Just a clam.
2. Hanon says she’s never seen the Pink Palace before. Why not? I assume the princesses didn’t really leave their own realms before the whole Panthalassa thing, but then didn’t Noel and Rina know each other before? Maybe not? I might be remembering wrong, but I don’t think that Noel and Karen have ever met before either...
3. Gaito’s magic well jiggles into existence.
4. More underwater physics mysteries: Taki, in human form, and Hippo walk on the castle floor, while the mermaids swim through the castle. Later, Momo swims through some kind of barrier, so it’s implied that there is a difference between the seawater and whatever is happening in the castle. Sidenote: I watched TroPre recently, and they also have an underwater castle. It’s probably not a bad idea to look at how they handled that a little closer? idk it’s probably not explained more than ~magic~
5. Hippo and Nikora are worried that Lucia won’t be able to truly open up to Aqua Regina during the ritual if she is being so obedient. This is one of those single lines that could be more interesting if elaborated on. Oh well, I guess that’s why I’m doing this whole thing.
6. Kaito tries to visit the hotel, only to find it empty. He’s kinda realizing how bad he messed up, but worse than last time. He can’t focus as he surfs later.
7. Momo casually kidnaps Kaito, and Kaito’s friends calmly watch as their friend rides a baby dolphin out to sea. Kaito also doesn’t seem too worried about this. Guys...
8. Taki plays a conch shell flute. Rina says the flute is magic. I don’t remember this flute being significant, but I’ll see?
9. Momo successfully brought Kaito into the palace. I would love to see how that went down bc at this point, Kaito doesn’t think he’s any different from any other human man, so from his perspective a baby dolphin is trying to drown him.
10. Kaito sees human Lucia in mermaid Lucia. My dude, you have figured this out like a month ago.
11. Gaito and squad bust through like the Kool-Aid man. Yuri floats through the castle with a full grand piano. I’m assuming this is her version of T-posing.
12. Kaito is once again shown to be immune to Yuri’s music.
13. Maria asserts her dominance as the unofficial leader of the Dark Lovers.
14. The Dark Lovers make a whirlpool. This somehow makes a tasteful peekaboo rip in Kaito’s new threads. Kaito and Lucia are sent in opposite directions.
15. After waking up, Lucia heads for the nearest Kaito-shaped object. Whoops all Gaito.
16. Gaito is a straight creep. Good villain tho.
17. Gaito seems surprised when the pink pearl glows? Implications are that, despite having the yellow and indigo (and kind of the orange) pearls, he’s not really done anything with them except put them in a crown.
18. The mer-trio face off with the Dark Lovers and Gaito. Gaito mocks Rina, and Hanon is surprised that Gaito looks like Kaito. Welcome to the plot.
19. Super Love Songs is a bop.
20. Let’s check in on Kaito. He’s alive. Time for him to look longingly at Lucia as she sings. I’m begging these two to talk. Kaito is magic-ed away from the castle and back into his surfing gear.
21. I think it’s very cute that Lucia is nervous to go back to school! I also really like that Kaito used what was left of the OG birthday present to make a new one.
Episode 14: Memories of a Starry Sky
1. Hanon introduced Lucia to the mermaid fortune telling cards, and the audience to a new eyecatch. I think this is a cute way of doing the eyecatches!
2. Hanon convinces Lucia to make and wear a beaded necklace bc the cards said so.
3. Rina gets two love letters from two of her classmates. She is confused as the girls run away giggling.
4. Lucia pockets her pendent to wear her beads. Why not wear them both? Last episode, you “swore on your pearl” to help Aqua Regina, and you’re just gonna slide your pearl in your girl pockets?! It’s for the drama.
5. Lucia and Hanon go to the beach to look for Kaito, who is going to the train station to visit his parents’ graves. The girls run into Taro, and Hanon leaves Lucia to hang off of his arm.
6. Lucia and Kaito have a comedy of errors moment, so now Lucia is ahead of Kaito, who has her pendent bc it fell out of her pocket.
7. Taro fills Hanon in on what Kaito is doing. Rina runs into Hanon. The girls plan on helping Lucia look for Kaito bc of Lucia’s poor sense of direction.
8. Lucia is lost enough that Kaito is ahead of her again without them crossing paths. Kaito gets the pendent wet and it glows bright pink, alerting Maria of where the pearl is.
9. While pondering why Lucia’s pendent is here in the first place, Kaito hears Yuri’s piano music coming from the nearby church. The church should have an organ, not a piano. Whatever tho
10. Kaito confronts Maria, who demands the pearl from him. He plays dumb and Maria resorts to violence immediately. She sticks him to a wall and caresses his cheek. Jail for Maria. This show is a lot hornier than I remember. Anyway, Kaito finally connects the dots and realizes who his mermaid is.
11. Maria pacifies Hanon and Rina by icing their mics. I guess the pearls don’t work when covered in ice? whatever it adds to the drama i guess
12. Lucia gets attacked with ice and Kaito looses it, shooting forehead light. This saves the girls. This also apparently takes away Kaito’s memories of just him figuring out who Lucia is. Bad plot point. The story would have been more interesting if he kept that knowledge. Would he confront her? Would he try to help her without talking too her? Maybe he assumes there’s a reason why she didn’t just tell him? If you’re not going to elaborate, don’t bother putting the plot point in at all.

🌊🐚Shells and other Beach Correspondences🐚🌊
Tumblr media
💙🐚What are Shells?🐚💙
Shells are the outer protective coatings of certain marine invertebrates such as mollusks. They are mainly combosed of calcium carbonate and chitin. Shells are formed along with the invertebrate and as the creature grows, the shell grows as well because of the added calcium layers. When the creature dies, the innerds are either eaten or rot away leaving clean remnents behind. Sea shells are extremely important to the marine ecosystem and are more than just pretty things to look at.
For one they serve as homes to many invertebrates and crusteceans like hermit crabs. The majority of sea shells found along beaches are the remnents of deceased invertebrates. But even the remnents have their uses! Shells are used as food sources for microbes, worms, and other creatures. They are also used by coral branches, sea weed, and sponges to "anchor" onto and start growing. You can even find a layer of algae or barnacles growing on the surface. Some animals such as sea urchins and small fish also use them as protection. Even certain species of sea birds use sea shells in their nests! The layer of sand and limetone on the ocean floor is mainly made up of eroded shells and rock as well. 🔹Source🔹
💙🐚Shell Correspondences🐚💙
In general all shells can be used for protection, beauty, love, and friendship spells. Broken shells can be grounded into powders to be used in jars, powder recipes, and more. Shells can also be used in curses by breaking them and imagining the shell as your target. They represent the element of water and the goddesses Venus and Aphrodite. Since they are formed in the ocean and are exposed to moonlight they also correspondend to lunar energies. Shells can also be worn as amulets.
🐚Abolone: These large shells have a perlescent patterns on their insides. They can be used as offering bowls or to smother smoke bundles. Because of their beautiful patterns they can be used for finding hidden treasures and wealth.
🐚Amonite: Theyse are ancient creatures that are related to the nautalus. The correspondences between the two are very similar. The amonites brain-like shape make them excellent for memory spells. Amonites have existed since possibly before the dinosaurs and correspond to deep wisdom. Also, amonites are know to have crystals inside them, making their properties even better. Amonites are very easy to find at museum shops, zoo stores, online, etc. They are extinct so you don't have to worry about buying them unsustainably. Nautalus on the other hand, are a different story. Do not buy nautalus shells since they are criticaly endangered and the mass harvesting of their shells is driving them to the brink of extinction.
🐚Auger: The augers phallic shape makes it good for spells pertaining to masculinity.
🐚Clam: Because of their accoation to the goddesses Venus and Aphrodite, clam shells are very good in love, friendship, beauty, and relationship spells.
🐚Cockle: Ever heard the phrase "warming the cockles of someone's heart"? That's what gives the cockle shell it's meaning! Cockles are good for love, friendship, and relationship spells because of the relation to the cockles (ventricles) of the human heart.
🐚Conch: They are known to make a horn-like sound when blown into, making them good for communication spells. I also like to put them near the entrance of my room/home for protection and to keep out bad energy. They are also good for love and friendship spells.
🐚Cone: They are generally good for protection and curses. The cone snail is a venomous, predatory snail with a special "harpoon" meant to inject venom into prey animals and predators. The venom of the larger cone snails can be fatal to humans (especially the Australian ones).
🐚Cowry: Were used as a currency in some civilizations and are associated with wealth. They also represent feminine energies, fertility, and menstruation due to the shape of the opening being similar to female genitalia.
🐚Moon: Their beautiful moon-like shape makes them perfect for lunar and emotional magic. They can also be used for dream work, meditation, and divination.
🐚Murex: Because of their many spines they are very good for protection spells.
🐚Olive: Since olive oil is good for healing and skin care, I also like to use this seashell for healing spells.
🐚Oyster: Are known to create pearls and are considered a delicacy among many costal cities. Because of this, oysters are good for wealth, success, and good fortune spells.
🐚Scallop: They are actually very speedy mollusks and move around a lot. Because of this they can be used in movement and travel spells. White scallops are like the clear quartz of shells and can be used to amplify spells or to substitute for other shells.
🐚Whelk: Because of the easy to handle shape of the shell, welks correspond to control and positive change.
💙🐚Shell Care🐚💙
Tumblr media
🐚🔷Cleaning🔷🐚
Sometimes shells collected from the beach have a funky smell to them. This is due to bacteria and algae beginning to rot and it produces a foul smell. To clean them you can either..
Scrub them with baking soda and water (be gentle!)
Place them in soil for a few weeks. The good bacteria along with bugs in the soil will begin to eat the dead stuff.
Boil them. Make sure you place them in when the water is lukewarm so they don't break due to the heat.
Make sure you do NOT clean them with vinegar. Shells are composed of calcium and vinegar wears down calcium. 🔹Source🔹
🐚🔷Charging🔷🐚
Shells collected directly from the sea don't really need this step and are good to go. However, shells that were bought or have been collecting dust in your closet need an energy reset. Take your shells and place them in saltwater (along with some sand, charged shells, or seaweed if you like!) and let them charge for a few hours. If you want a real boost, let them charge under moonlight.
💙🐚Shell DIY's🐚💙
Besides using shells as spell ingredients, you can also use them to make...
Shell candles
Mermaid crown
Incense burners
Offering bowls
Spoons
Wall hangings
Wind chimes
Runes
💙🐚Other Beach Treasurers🐚💙
🔹Crab claws: The zodiac Cancer is represented by the crab. Using crab claws and shells in spells can help you get more intuned with Cancer (if that's your zodiac). They are also good for protection, curses, and emotion magick.
🔹Driftwood: Corresponds to strength, endurance, and "going with the flow" because of how it floats across the sea and is shaped by relentless waves.
🔹Hag Stones: They are formed when erosion or creatures create holes in rock. The constant erosion and saltwater make hag stones smooth and rounded. They are referenced in pop culture including the movies Coraline and the Spiderwhick Cronicles. If you've seen either of these movies, you will know that hag stones were used to help the main character see hidden things/creatures. This is why they are good for clarity spells. They can also be used for protection amulets to either hang around the house or on yourself.
🔹Sand dollar: I like to associate sand dollars with wealth because of the name. They also are a natural pentacle shape and can be used on your altar, as an amulet, or in protection spells.
🔹Sea glass: Is formed when glass is broken up and eroded by salt water. Over time the glass edges become blunt and the glass is given a lovely texture and color. Sea glass is a lot of time used for clarity spells because of their glass components. I also like to use them in meditation, dream work, and physchic spells. They can also be used for change, "going with the flow", and endurance because of how they were formed.
🔹Sharks teeth: Sharks teeth have many uses. They can be used in protection spells. I also associate them with success or "grabbing your desires" because of how sharks grab their prey. Teeth can be used in curses as well.
💙🐚Shell Collecting PSA🐚💙
‼️If you need shells, either get them from the beach, buy them from an antique or second hand store, or buy them from someone who responsibly collects them. DO NOT buy them from those souvenir shops or craft stores. Shells, dried sea horses and star fish, and other creatures are mass harvested from the ocean every year, dead or alive. They are left out in the sun to dry out and are then sold across the world in shops or as crafting supplies. This mass harvesting is depleting ocean at an alarming rate and is causing ecosystems to collapse. 🔹Source🔹
‼️If youre collecting shells, only take what you need. Are you really going to use ALL the shells you collected in that bucket? Shells are very important to the ocean since they are the home to many different animals such as crusteceans. Leave pleanty of shells behind for the little guys. 🔹Source🔹

Percabeth: Fall break? Or Halloween?
pjo roommate au ♥
*
Halloween falls on a Tuesday this month. Annabeth’s plans include studying for this week’s quiz and preparing for her ARCH380 presentation. She has a mind-centering playlist singing quietly from her laptop and a pristine graph pad primed and ready for drafts and sketches and diagrams.
She expects to get a few knocks on her door, despite the fact that she hasn’t posted a pumpkin on her door–a cheery decal given to every resident in the apartment complex, which designates homes that are ready to receive trick-or-treaters. Annabeth’s a bit of a scrooge this year. She’s just so damned busy, and under so much pressure–every moment of her time needs to be devoted to this project. It’s nearly 35% of her grade. She’s nothing if not a physical embodiment of focus. She’s got her protein bars, and tea, and extra pencils. She’s optimally comfortable in sweatpants and her roommate’s hoodie.
An hour passes. Two. Three. A few people knock on the door and move on. Annabeth flips through her flashcards, and reorganizes her notes, and perfects her blueprints. Her playlist winds to a close and starts from the beginning again–beautiful, slow instrumentals, orchestral and humming. She pulls her pencil across paper, sees stretching structures, towering and technical and stunning. She runs down equations like clockwork; easy, like breathing.
Another knock on the door.
She ignores it, like the others, except this one does not cease; it knocks, and knocks, and knocks. And knocks. And knocks.
It does not stop, even when Annabeth glares at the door. Even when she holds her breath and counts to ten. Twenty. Thirty. Even when she stands, and stomps to the foyer, and unlocks the bolt and chain, and whips the door open.
She has to admit surprise. She does not expect to see her own roommate standing in the hallway, nor their best friend, waving sheepishly behind him. Percy is dressed like the Little Mermaid: long green fin, purple clam-shell bra, curly red wig. His candy bag is shaped like Flounder, and is filled with treats and cans of soda and random, loose pieces of popcorn. Next to him, Grover is decorated in browns and greens like a five foot twig.
“I am Groot,” Grover intones.
“Trick or treat,” Percy greets.
Annabeth sighs, and starts to close the door. “I don’t have time for this.”
But Percy sticks his fin in the door, and Grover shoves it open with his vine-wrapped crutch. They shove their way inside.
“It’s Halloween,” Percy says, easing her back, a gentle hand on her arm. He pushes until there’s enough space that Grover can step in and shut the door behind them. He pushes until there’s not enough space between them–she’s already wearing his hoodie, the one that smells entirely too much like him, but he’s–wearing a strapless bra disguised as clams, and his entire chest-ab-hip situation is on display, so that’s–she tries not to look, tries not to let herself get distracted, but–
“Annabeth?”
Heat rises to her face. She turns back to the study center she’s set up in the living room. Her laptop rests on the coffee table, and everything else is spread out from that epicenter–textbooks, and notebooks, and binders, flashcards, graph sheets, blueprints, spare pencils, erasers. She is about to resume her seat in the center when Percy grabs her elbow.
“Hey, come on. You’ve been studying all night. Come out with us.”
“Percy, I’m busy–”
“And you’re stupidly smart, and I know you know all this already,” he says, gesturing to the living room. He hasn’t let go of her arm. “Don’t you want to come con the neighbors out of free candy?”
“Free candy!” Grover crows. He leans forward and pushes Annabeth’s laptop closed with his crutch. Her music abruptly cuts off. “Let’s go, Annabeth. We’re breaking you out of here.”
Percy smiles. His eyes are unfairly pretty. “Yeah, let’s go, Annabeth.”
She sighs.
The silence of the apartment ticks by. Grover shifts on his feet, and Percy shakes her arm, and Annabeth quickly reorganizes her plans, sorts her next day by class and study blocks and computer lab hours. She’ll have to wake up by eight, no matter how horribly late her friends might keep her up–she’ll also have to reschedule her advisory hours, and see if she can maneuver her work study block to something more manageable. But–
Percy ushers her into her room, and together they manage to wrangle her into some sort of a costume. They fashion her white bedsheet into a Grecian peplos, and tie it off with a gold cord from her box of spare craft materials. She slips into a pair of gladiator sandals, and pulls her hair up into a messy updo, and swipes some shimmer on her face, and it’s enough to allow her to say she’s some kind of goddess. She’ll convince the neighbors, at least, but–
She turns, and spins in her sheet-dress, and laughs self-consciously. She looks up at Percy. “I guess this’ll have to do.”
“You, uh–yeah,” he says. He blushes down to his chest. He looks this side of starstruck. “You look good. You look fine. Let’s go?”
Annabeth smiles. She tries not to feel flattered; she feels his eyes on her as she leaves the room, and can’t help but sway her hips as she walks through the living room, joins Grover. He holds the door open for her. “Let’s go!”
Grover grins. “Happy Halloween. Let’s go get some candy.”
