give a basic bitch a semi-decent coming out storyline and they'll act like this is the greatest thing ever done and pretend this is the first good thing coming off a media they're so predictable

joaquin left riverdale on a bus headed to san junipero to save himself, but then he comes back to riverdale to help save fangs and for that choice he gets imprisoned, blackmailed, and murdered before he even graduates high school. but then in another lifetime, where joaquin never existed, where fangs makes it to graduation (heterosexually (?)) and tries to leave riverdale for good, his bus crashes. town that kills you if you leave! town that kills you if you stay! town that kills you and kills you and kills y

Are true riverdale fans of the opinion it is a very good and nearly flawless show or does being a true riverdale fan mean being able to mock writing choices
it's long-running serial television plotted a season/half at a time so definitely not even "nearly" flawless.
BUT. i'm not doing combat with the writing team. i'm not actively reading against the text the way i have to in order to enjoy something like supernatural or the 90s robin comics or the fucking sopranos, which are patriarchal christiancore copworld rapeworld white supremacist horrorshows that hate their minority audiences, with like 2 good creatives involved and martyring themselves to fight the good fight on sparse rare installments if you try to approach them sincerely.
riverdale writing staff are like a favorite smart problematic tumblr mutual to me. I don't always like what's on their blog or who they're referencing. but we're in the same community and i'm interested and inspired and i trust their agenda overall, even when i see shit i wouldn't have fucking posted. but bc i'm not being condescended to or actively spited i'm not gonna condescend to or spite them, you know?
i expect rvd to age like twin peaks (another very uneven, highly referential serial juggling a couple of intensely cool metanarratives on top of its core story). and twin peaks fandom mocks twin peaks all the time. twin peaks includes some CLUNKY shit. it's kitsch. it's camp. it has a second season that is largely ASS. james is there. and on top of that it also includes some genuinely offputting-to-me stuff that just bothers me to sit through, even though i feel like i understand and respect what they're going for with it. i just don't want to watch someone sweep the fucking bar for minutes and minutes as entertainment. OK!!?
...so yeah. mock riverdale but in the right spirit. is that an answer? do i sound like i'm chugging the flavoraid koolaid fresh-aid? probably.

people's complaints about the riverdale polycule ending are so stupid like why are you complaining that 4 people dating was too shocking or silly. it should have been the whole town in that polycule 🚬

What type of 'Die a hero or live long enough to become a villain' shut is Netflix PULLING RN!!!!!
Either they'll nuke a show after 1/2 good seasons for really no reason, or give it a handful of seasons that progressively get worse until its the most unwatchable shit imaginable

early s1 riverdale is so funny because there's so much drama about how archie and jughead ~used to be friends~ and had this ~epic falling-out~ and they keep saying shit to each other like "you don't even know me anymore!" "i used to know you." and the whole time it's because archie bailed on a roadtrip they were supposed to take, like, six weeks earlier

no but like what is up with the wider shipping community and their way of allowashing clearly aspec-coded characters. or hell. even canon confirmed aspec characters. this amanormativity shit is making me tired. does a character really need to wear a giant shirt that says “i’m asexual” or “i’m aromantic” or “i’m aroace” in all caps and flaming text to tell everyone not to ship them the same way allo characters get shipped. we are not a monolith but i know i can sure as hell say our experiences will never be the same as an allo person’s

Her music isnt bad. But largely unremarkable in a way that makes me believe chappel roan was manufactured in a pharmaceutical lab specifically for straight women who wanted to have a ‘but I listen to X!’ card for when they get a liiiittle too homophobic.

Pour one out for Reggie, always second choice for the Lodges after Archie
SECOND CHOICE FOR EVERYONE. like literally it is so hard to evaluate reggie (especially w/r/t the lodges) without bringing in The Tragedy Of The Side Character Rival-Foil who exists in the narrative to experience B-plot versions of the A-plot in miniature
riverdale-the-metanarrative is so blatantly full of guys who are different versions of archie and where his character could go in the story if he didn't have to be the protagonist-hero - munroe as the jaded star fighter with the same nickname hiram originally used on archie as an endearment, who could get out of this damn town if he commits to sports. eric jackson as the disabled vet with unmanaged ptsd who betrayed his unit for a manipulative man in authority who just gets to be a respectable figure in society while his groomed victims suffer (and he could speak up and get justice if he's willing to handle the social impacts of being labeled a survivor). kevin as the openly-gay damagingly-impulsive, validation-seeking, people-pleasing, insecure joiner with a nice-but-emotionally-distant dad who keeps trying to find happiness through in-group conformism. julian s7 as literal understudy, and the guy who died in war (also got targeted and negged by s7 reboot hiram lodge in the s7 reboot version of wrestling. dramatic monologues).
reggie is like. the most powerful and tragic of all of these archie analogs bc he's sometimes a rival, too. so his jealousy and inferiority complex towards archie exists both inside and outside of the narrative! all of those other archie reflections aren't also competing with him and comparing themselves to him and constantly getting handed his leftovers and cast-offs and feeling that that is what's happening. but reggie is :\
anyway. so tragic. love u reggie

im fascinated by a certain brand of riverdale viewers that seem to only want whatever white picket fence normative ending they thought of 6 years ago and are also somehow unaware this is not how all other people watch riverdale like we’ve all seen the “making this previously straight character bisexual now is actually offensive to gay people and it’s queerbaiting when they gay kiss and have gay sex and talk about gay feelings” people (which is code for we already have the safely designated gay characters who we have already labelled in our heads as gay characters and so we dont care about them or think about them beyond the fact that gay 1 and gay 2 go together because they’re the gay ones) and now also the “the core 4 ending up in a quad together is just a cop out so they dont have to pick barchie or bughead and no one has ever even considered it ever” people while the riverdale bloggers have been like yeah those 4 are psychosexual about each other since day one it’s like we always say the core four are in all ways except literal in a polyamorous relationship. i mean how can you be so unaware of the gay riverdale posters if i’ve seen you you’ve probably seen me be real

Gay Archie, chasing Reggie back to his family's farm after Uncle Frank discovered their forbidden romance and kicked Reggie out of their home: What if you and me had a little ranch somewhere? It'd be a sweet life. You'd be this rancher and I'd be your farmhand and we'd both just be doing our thing.
Reggie: I told you, it ain't gonna be that way. You know, you have Betty back in Riverdale, and I've got my farm here.
Gay Archie, on the verge of gay tears: Well, try this one and I'll say it just once: We could've had a good life together! A real good life! Had us a place of our own. But you didn't want it, Reggie! So what we got now is the epic highs and lows of high school basketball!
