I don't really believe in the concept of noblesse oblige but whenever I get really mad at people online who are objectively way worse off than me in terms of every offline metric, I instinctively remind myself it doesn't behoove me to punch down so I send their tweets/posts to my friends with snide comments rather than fighting them publicly.

Summary: When Taehyung took a simple order of pizza, breadsticks, and a soda to a customer on a rainy day, he had no idea how good his tip would be.
A/N: This fic was written for the @bangtanwritingbingo Summer Bingo square Jungkook x Taehyung and also for @venusiangguk who requested TaeKook with prompt #11: “Is it an oral fixation or do you just not want to talk to me?”
The life of a pizza delivery boy was far more interesting than one would think. Though it was a lower end, minimum wage job, for someone like Taehyung, it was excellent. He was a natural social butterfly. Outgoing, bright, vibrant, always seeking to make new friends. This job allowed him to meet a whole variety of people. Who didn’t like pizza? Upper class, snobby elite individuals, right down to the barely surviving folks who managed to scrape together enough for a small delivery once in a blue moon – Taehyung loved meeting them all.
It was a Friday. It was payday. It was a good day. At least, until the clouds rolled in, darkening the sky and bringing thunder. And unfortunate torrents of rain. But a delivery boy doesn’t get a day off, and orders tended to only increase when the weather was this cruddy.
Taehyung didn’t mind. Not really. He could handle a little rain and he had a sturdy car.
The delivery was simple. A large pepperoni pizza, a small order of breadsticks, and a 2 liter of Coke. Simple. Probably a parent with a young child, a college age student, or a babysitter. Should be quick. Probably not a great tip for any of them, but that was okay; he’d had a big delivery to a house party earlier and had made a massive tip… And gotten a cute boy’s number. Taehyung was handsome, so it happened more than one would assume. The jokes about wanting to sleep with the pizza boy weren’t always jokes. Not that he’d ever go through with any of it. It was simple flirtation, it helped with tips. Taehyung figured he’d have to find someone pretty damn special to actually call them back.
The rain seemed to come down harder as Taehyung drove to the address on his GPS. He reached a cute little house with a nicely kept yard. It was a little bit of a walk from where he was able to park to the porch… The driveway would offer a little more protection and a little shorter distance… Normally he didn’t park in driveways; people tended to sometimes get a little angry – but considering the circumstances…
Taehyung pulled into the driveway, nosing as close as he dared to the garage door. He grabbed the pizza bag and covered it carefully with a plastic sheet before pulling up his hood and getting out. He raced from the driveway to the front door, relaxing only when he was safely on the porch. He knocked once, putting on a broad smile.
The door opened a crack, and then a little further, and then all the way. And Taehyung, for what it was worth, forgot how to breathe.
Standing in the doorway was the most stunning young man he’d ever seen. The man was just a little shorter than he was, with shaggy brown hair that swooped down nearly over his eyes, parted enough to peek his forehead. He wore thick silver hoops in his ears, two in his right and one in his left. His plush mouth and round nose matched his face perfectly, and dark eyes drew Taehyung in almost immediately. The man’s beauty wasn’t lowered or altered in the slightest by the fact that he was wearing a sweater and sweats, his feet bare. He smiled softly, his nose crinkling up.
Taehyung beamed. “Hey. Pizza. You’re…” He glanced at the nametag on the receipt. “Jeon Jungkook?”
Jungkook nodded. He glanced over Taehyung shoulder, his small smile drooping. “Come inside,” he said softly, stepping aside.
“Oh, thank you.” Taehyung stepped inside just enough for Jungkook to close the door, and crouched to take out the food. He handed it over to Jungkook quickly. “Pouring out there,” he commented.
“Flooding,” Jungkook agreed.
Taehyung scowled at that. He turned, glancing out the window. As Jungkook had commented, the streets were nearly filled with water, pouring in rivets in certain areas. Taehyung’s body went cold. “Oh God, it got worse.”
“Doesn’t look safe to drive in,” Jungkook muttered.
Taehyung sighed heavily. He turned back and smiled as best he could. “I’m sure I’ll be fine.”
He turned to grab the doorknob, but Jungkook rushed forward, grabbing his wrist.
“It’s a flash flood. News said it was dangerous. You should stay until it’s lightened up.” His voice was soft and timid, barely above a whisper. Either he was terrified, or truly the shiest man in the city. But he seemed genuine in his concern, and Taehyung felt a strange peace come over him at that.
“I’ll call my boss.” Taehyung turned and pulled out his phone, dialing his boss’ number.
“Kim Taehyung! Are you safe? It got so bad out there, I was worried sick.”
“I’m fine. I’m at the last customer’s house.”
“I shouldn’t have sent you out in this mess. Can you make it back?”
“The roads are pretty flooded. I was calling to ask if I could stay out. Until they clear up. I’ll work extra hours tomorrow.”
“Don’t worry about it. Stay safe. Do you know the customer?”
“No, but he’s letting me stay until it clears up. I’ll let you know when I make it home.”
“Thank you, keep me updated.”
Taehyung hung up and smiled. “She’s okay with me not going back. Uh… Thanks for letting me hide out here until the weather lightens.”
Jungkook nodded. He looked down at the food in his hands and turned, setting it on his table. He turned back, chewing his bottom lip.
Taehyung blinked, unsure what to do. He watched Jungkook disappear through a doorway and then return, holding out a paper plate toward Taehyung.
“Are you offering me lunch?” Taehyung asked. Jungkook nodded, pulling open the pizza box.
“Thanks.” Taehyung kicked his shoes off and hung his hoodie before he stepped up, taking a slice of the pizza. “I’m Kim Taehyung.” He stuck out his hand. Jungkook smiled shyly and shook it. He opened his mouth to answer and then closed it, grabbing a breadstick and sticking it into his mouth instead.
Taehyung laughed a little.
He sat at the table, watching Jungkook eat.
“Do you live alone?” He asked. Jungkook swallowed the bite he had in his mouth and nodded, quickly adding more food to his mouth.
Their lunch continued in that manner – Jungkook would answer yes or no answers, always adding food to his mouth, a drink, or biting on something to keep his mouth too full to give Taehyung much of an answer at all. Despite the one-sided conversation, Taehyung was thoroughly intrigued by Jungkook. He wanted to know everything about him. Namely, why he refused to speak.
Despite his quiet nature, Taehyung could feel Jungkook looking at him whenever he looked away. A few times their gazes met, and Jungkook’s was intense enough that Taehyung found himself a bit flustered. For someone who refused to speak, he was certainly showing plenty of interest.
After lunch, Jungkook wandered over to the couch. He looked at Taehyung and patted the seat next to him. Taehyung smirked. He settled next to Jungkook, turning his attention to the television when Jungkook turned it on, flipping through the channels. He picked up the string on his sweatshirt as he did, sticking it into his mouth and chewing gently on it.
Taehyung chuckled a little. He relaxed back against the couch, glancing over at Jungkook every little bit. Even relaxed like this – the boy was stunning. His profile was nearly perfect. He could easily be a singer or a celebrity.
“What do you do for a living, Jungkook?” Taehyung finally asked.
Jungkook looked over, his eyes wide. He dropped the string from his mouth. “I— I’m computer. I program. Computers.” He stuttered.
“Wow, that’s cool,” Taehyung grinned. “You must be super smart, that’s such a cool job.”
Jungkook smiled shyly. He stuck the string back in his mouth, gnawing on it.
“I’m finishing up college myself,” Taehyung continued, looking back at the television. “For photography and media design. I absolutely love art in all forms.”
He glanced at Jungkook from the corner of his eye, catching the other eyeing him up and down. A slow smirk crossed his lips.
“You know, Jungkook… I’ve gotta ask.” He looked back at him and reached out, tugging the sweatshirt string from his mouth. “Is it an oral fixation, or do you just not want to talk to me?”
Jungkook’s eyes widened. He covered his mouth and tilted his head a little.
“No, I—I don’t not want to talk to you. I mean, I—” He squeaked a little, covering his ears.
Taehyung’s grin grew. “Are you really so shy?”
Jungkook lowered his gaze and nodded.
“Well you don’t have to be.”
Instead of responding, Jungkook slipped his finger into his mouth, chewing the skin around the side of his fingernail.
Taehyung reached out, pushing his hand down. He shifted over a little, staring until Jungkook looked at him.
“You’ve been checking me out all afternoon.”
“You noticed?” Jungkook squeaked. His cheeks began to redden in little blotches, chest rising a little faster. “I’m sorry.”
“Why?”
“It’s creepy,” Jungkook muttered.
“I don’t think so. In fact, I’m pretty flattered.” Taehyung reached out, hesitating a moment before touching Jungkook’s cheek with his hand. “Not often a stunning young man looks at me like that.”
“I didn’t mean to…” Jungkook whispered. He looked away, but didn’t pull his face away from Taehyung’s grip.
“I’ve been looking at you too, Jungkook.” Taehyung paused, letting Jungkook look at him once more. When he did, Taehyung continued. “We’re both adults. If you do have an oral fixation… Well…” Taehyung wet his lips, leaving the question unasked.
Jungkook’s eyes dropped down to his crotch, and Taehyung smirked.
“Yeah, that’s what I thought. Is that what you were thinking about?”
Jungkook didn’t answer. He bit on his lips, sucking them in until they formed a fine line. Taehyung pushed a little further, stroking his thumb over Jungkook’s mouth.
“It’s okay if it was. You just need to tell me. So that I know how to respond.”
Jungkook’s eyes widened just enough to be noticeable. He released the grip on his lips, then bit his bottom lip once more, drumming his fingers on his thigh. “What if I was?” He kept the same soft voice, but there was something else. A rough, needy tone that sent the blood straight to Taehyung’s cock.
“I guess I’d have no choice but to oblige your curiosity. I can’t deny a cute boy his wants, now can I?” Taehyung rose. He put his hands on his jeans, hesitating. “Is this what you were thinking about, Jungkook?”
Jungkook nodded, his eyes glued to Taehyung’s crotch.
Taehyung undid his jeans. He could not honestly believe he was doing this. He pushed his jeans and boxers down, letting them pool around his ankles. His cock was already standing at attention, mostly hard at the prospect of having Jungkook in any way.
Despite his shyness, Jungkook responded immediately. He sank to his knees and stroked Taehyung’s cock twice before opening his mouth. Taehyung pushed his hips forward slowly, letting his smooth tip slide over Jungkook’s tongue.
“Holy shit... Suck on it.”
Jungkook’s lips closed immediately and he began to suck, bobbing his head easily along the shaft. Taehyung’s toes curled. He buried his fingers in Jungkook’s soft curls, letting his head fall back. His cock hardened the rest of the way within seconds. Taehyung snapped his hips forward until the tip of his cock bumped the back of Jungkook’s throat. He looked down.
Jungkook gagged once, screwing his eyes shut. Instead of pulling back, he shifted, swallowing the spit pooling around Taehyung’s cock. He moved back a little and pushed forward. Taehyung felt his tip bump his throat again, and the convulsion of his throat, and then it relaxed.
Taehyung shouted when his tip slipped into Jungkook’s warm, tight throat. He began to pump his hips gently, not wanting to hurt Jungkook, but wanting to savor that tight, unique feeling. He pulled his cock free, marveling at how slick with spit it was, shining in the lamplight. Jungkook let his mouth hang open, drool spilling out over his chin and onto his lap. His cock was tenting the front of his sweats obscenely.
“You getting off swallowing my dick, pretty one?” Taehyung teased, slapping Jungkook’s cheek with his cock.
Jungkook nodded. He leaned back, pulling his sweats down around his knees. His cock wasn’t huge, but it certainly was hard, dripping precome the moment it was exposed.
“Can you come from this, sweetie?” Taehyung cooed. He rubbed his cock over Jungkook’s lips.
“Almost,” Jungkook whispered. “As long as I can finger my ass.”
“Do you have toys?”
Jungkook nodded.
“Go put one in for me. One that will help you come. I want you to squirt without touching yourself.”
“Yes, Sir.” Jungkook rose. He tugged off his sweats and rushed off. Taehyung stroked his cock lazily, Jungkook’s spit slicking the way.
Jungkook returned with a thick, curved dildo in one hand.
“Wanna stick it up my ass?”
“I’d love to.”
Jungkook crawled onto the couch. He let his head hang over the edge, and slung his back and hips up the back of it, folding himself up so his knees nearly touched his chest. The angle exposed, and spread, his ass beautifully. Taehyung spit against his hole, smirking when it fluttered and Jungkook giggled.
“I was fingering myself before you came,” he explained. “Just stick it in.”
Taehyung did as he requested, sliding the silicone cock past his tight rim. Jungkook moaned contentedly, his dick dribbling precome onto his upper chest.
“Jungkook...” Taehyung said, nestling the toy neatly between Jungkook’s ass cheeks. “Can you come on your own face in this position?”
Jungkook nodded.
“Let me know when you’re close... I wanna see that.”
Taehyung shifted, rubbing his cock over Jungkook’s lips once more before sliding into his warm mouth. The new angle let Taehyung watch his cock slowly slipping in, each bob of Jungkook’s Adam’s apple as he swallowed, easing the way for the sensitive tip to finally slip into his throat. Despite having been there earlier - the feeling still caught Taehyung off guard. He lightly rested his hand on Jungkook’s throat as he began to pump his hips. Much to his surprise, right at the start of his throat, Taehyung could feel a little bulge on each inward stroke. He rubbed it gently, gasping at the sudden pressure.
“Oh god, I’m really in your throat—“ he panted. He pulled back and Jungkook gasped in a breath. He grinned, his eyes shut.
“Where’d you think I was putting it?” He teased.
Taehyung slapped his bare ass, working the dildo deeper, and Jungkook moaned.
Taehyung slid his cock back into his mouth, gripping the base of the dildo. One hand rested over Jungkook’s throat, rubbing lightly each time he pumped his cock. The other he used to tug the dildo, not enough to pull it free from the clench of Jungkook’s rim, but just enough to tease.
Jungkook moaned around Taehyung’s cock, the wet gulping noises adding to the obscenity - and sexiness - of the situation.
Jungkook’s cock was leaking precome freely, dribbling clear streaks over his heaving, sweat slicked chest. He began to tap Taehyung’s thigh and pointed at his cock.
Taehyung pulled out, and Jungkook moaned loudly. He reached down, holding his ass open further, and pushing his hips up more. His cock twitched and throbbed visibly. Taehyung began to work the dildo quicker, angling it against where his prostate should be. Jungkook’s eyes rolled back.
“Stick it down my throat,” he begged. His voice was rasping and dry. He opened his mouth wide, sticking his tongue out.
Taehyung obeyed, sliding his cock in. Jungkook’s nose nuzzled against his tight, full balls, and he gagged, his cock twitching. Taehyung struggled to hold still as Jungkook began to swallow and moan around him. The squeeze was bordering on uncomfortable, but Taehyung barely noticed. Jungkook was moaning against him, the vibrations tingling up his cock and all the way to his toes. He almost missed the desperate tapping on his thigh for a second time.
He pulled out, and Jungkook jerked hard. He burped, his cheeks pinking up even more, and his cock began to spurt. The first rope landed on his chin, milky and thick. Jungkook tilted his head just enough and the next two spurted into his open mouth. Taehyung went forward, sliding his cock in. The final hot rope streaked over his shaft, making him shudder. He pushed his cock deep into Jungkook’s mouth, feeling the silky slide of Jungkook’s come as it coated his cock.
He began to pump his hips, chasing his orgasm. “Gonna come in your throat,“ Taehyung gasped, holding Jungkook’s head. Jungkook gave a thumbs up, moaning around his cock.
Two more pumps and Taehyung went still, grunting softly. His cock spilled into Jungkook’s throat, milked by the steady swallows, and urged on by Jungkook’s hands on his ass, holding him deep. The orgasm curled his toes, every nerve alight with pleasure. Each pump he knew he was spilling into the delicate, exposed throat of his pretty new friend. Jungkook’s breath was hot against his balls as he struggled to draw in air and not choke on the come. His own softening cock twitched weakly and dribbled onto his chest.
Taehyung pulled out only when he began to soften, and Jungkook shot up, coughing and gagging. Taehyung sat next to him, rubbing and patting his back. He reached up, wiping away some of the stray come and spit streaking Jungkook’s face.
“You okay?” Taehyung worried. Jungkook nodded, clearing his throat. He smiled sheepishly.
“I’m okay,” he whispered, his voice raspy. Taehyung rose and grabbed the cup of soda from the table, bringing it over to Jungkook. Jungkook rose just enough to pull his sweats up before slumping back onto the couch and taking the cup from Taehyung.
Taehyung fixed his jeans, glancing around.
“So that was… Something…”
“Were you pleased?” Jungkook asked softly, staring into the cup.
“Was I—Of course I was pleased, you were great. I’ve never had someone… So happy to do that. Do you really like it when people…”
Jungkook nodded again. “I don’t get the opportunity often. I’m too shy to really make friends, let alone proposition someone.”
Taehyung sat back down next to Jungkook. “Look, we just met… And I didn’t, obviously… Plan for any of this. So, you would be well within your rights to tell me to fuck off…”
Jungkook looked over, tilting his head a little curiously.
Taehyung smiled. “God you’re cute,” he sighed.
Jungkook giggled a little at that, lowering his gaze. “I already sucked your dick,” he said softly. “You don’t need to butter me up.”
“What if I’m buttering you up for something else?” Taehyung asked. Jungkook looked back up.
“Like what?”
“A date.”
Jungkook raised his eyebrows, making them disappear into his shaggy bangs. “A date? W… With you?”
“Yeah, with me. I like you. I want to get to know you better. What do you think?”
“I—” Jungkook seemed to freeze, pinching his lips together in a fine line.
“You don’t have to say yes,” Taehyung worried.
“No, I – I want to. I just… Why?”
“Because I like you.” Taehyung shrugged. You want to?”
Jungkook nodded.
“Great. Uh… Well, I mean… Obviously I’m already over but… Maybe this weekend?”
“I’d like that.”
Taehyung grinned. He pulled out his phone and handed it over to Jungkook. “Your number, if you’re okay with that?”
“Yeah, of course.” Jungkook took it and typed it in. As he did, Taehyung rose, peeking out of the blinds.
“Looks like the flooding has gone down enough. I should probably get back to my work.”
Jungkook nodded. He rose, fixing his own pants. He handed Taehyung’s phone back.
“Text me so I can get your number… Drive safe, okay?”
Taehyung nodded. He pulled on his jacket and toed into his shoes. Jungkook moved up to him, looking shy once more.
“What?” Taehyung teased.
“Can I kiss you?”
“Can’t get enough of that oral fixation, eh?” Taehyung joked. He reached out, brushing his thumb over Jungkook’s bottom lip. “Of course you can.”
He pulled Jungkook into a gentle kiss, holding him close. It was funny, he realized, as they separated and he hurried out the door to his car. A simple twist of fate – a forced meeting – a simple call for a pizza on a rainy day – could change an entire life.

batman forever riddlebat ship meme
(This one was inevitable. God, do I love this movie. @heroes-etc gave me questions from this ship meme.)
2. Who is the most insecure and what makes them feel better?
The obvious answer here is Edward because he is... clearly and pathologically insecure in his identity and requiring outside approval. You could argue he gets over this once he adopts his flamboyant supervillain identity, but as soon as he steps out of it to be Edward Nygma again he’s as self-conscious as ever. On some level his Bruce cosplay at the Nygmatech party is probably supposed to be a dig at his former idol, but it’s pretty transparent that he’s paranoid about not measuring up, especially once Bruce actually walks in.
As for what makes him feel better, two obvious high points of his self-esteem right off the bat (lol) are when Bruce is giving him positive attention in his intro scene, and directly afterwards when he’s murdering his boss for ragging on him.
Of course, neither external validation or murder is, like, a permanent solution to insecurity. Obviously. If they ever got together Bruce would probably make him go to therapy, which would be incredibly hypocritical because, as Dr. Meridian points out in this movie, that’s not exactly something Bruce is doing. Although in Bruce’s defense, if you count the novelizations as canon for this continuity, the psychiatrist Alfred hired for him as a child basically wrote him off as a lost cause that was going to inevitably self-destruct at some point in adulthood. So I can see why he’d think therapy isn’t for him.
"Young Bruce may seem quite the stalwart, but there’s still a child beneath that veneer of calm acceptance [...] The day will come when that veneer crumbles, and the boy reacts to the memory of his ordeal. Such matters may be postponed, but not indefinitely. And the longer this one is delayed, the greater the damage will be to his psyche.”
“Still,” Alfred pressed. “How do you think this will all come out? Off the record, if you prefer.”
Another pause. “I am not terribly optimistic,” the stout man admitted. “But I assure you, I will do my best.”
Alternatively, Bruce just lets Edward borrow his clothes and calls it a day. It’s less time consuming than therapy and both the movie and novelization demonstrate how into that Edward is.
He was murmuring to himself, “We’ll probably be dining at Wayne Manor together.” He envisioned Bruce sitting across from him, and began to launch into a narrative [...] “Yes. Yes. A Party in my honor? I should have rented a tuxedo. What?” he couldn’t believe it, “One of yours, Bruce?” He gave it a moment’s thought and then shrugged. “Why not? We are the same size.”
3. Who is the most romantic?
Uh, not Bruce! Batman Forever is the most thoughtfully romantic he gets in the entire series, and even here his only two dates ideas are “whatever Gotham social event my secretary tells me I need a date for” and “coming on to my date in my alternate identity to see if she loves me enough not to cheat on me with Batman.” Also, he vacillates between staunchly refusing to do any flirting at all and dishing out the least romantic pick-up lines possible.
You say “bad writing,” I say “totally in character for a hot rich guy who knows that this is as hard as he has to try to get into someone’s pants.” Bruce might love his partner with the intensity of a thousand dying suns, but he’s still sending Alfred to buy all their Valentine’s Day presents. His idea of a romantic evening for two is finally trusting someone enough to tell them his secret identity. If he’s done that already, or they already figured it out, then his playbook is over. That’s clearly the only romantic fantasy he’s ever allowed himself.
(I was going to say he does this once every movie, but he actually never does this in Batman & Robin specifically because he doesn’t actually care about Julie Madison. She proposes to him and he gets her name wrong while shooting her down. Add that to the “Bruce Wayne isn’t romantic” box.)
The ridiculous amount of magazine cut-outs populating Edward’s apartment indicates that he probably has a very vibrant and extensive set of fantasies involving Bruce, which is hinted at a couple times in the novelization.
Edward would certainly know him when he saw him. He’d spent enough time anticipating the moment, after all [...] Finally he was going to be meeting Bruce Wayne face-to-face, and he had every moment of the encounter scripted [...] He’d rehearsed it to perfection in his mind for weeks upon months.
In the grand scheme of things... in the fabulous, sweeping, intertwining destinies of Bruce Wayne and Edward Nygma, such a slip would not even rate a footnote.
He becomes suddenly and painfully aware that if Bruce Wayne walked away without Edward Nygma by his side, then that would be it. It would be finished. All these weeks, months... indeed, a lifetime of planning... and it was crumbling under him just like that.
Of course, that doesn’t necessarily mean his fantasies are all romantic in the traditional sense of the word. This is a man who was charmed by Harvey holding a charity circus hostage with some kind of graffitied missile warhead. Tonally, there’s not even that much of a difference between his crush collages and his riddle death threats.
What’s weirder, using a magazine cutout of someone you hate to make a pop-up card of their face, or using a magazine cutout of someone you love to replace the anatomically correct heart in the cardiovascular system diagram you keep in your apartment/arcade/makeshift laboratory? Probably the former, since it was made with the express purpose of Bruce actually seeing it. Although presumably Edward was planning on taking Bruce to his apartment at some point? And in the novelization, he actually drags Bruce into his cubicle to look at his Wayne Shrine.
He grabbed Bruce’s arms and shouted “No, don’t leave me! I need you! [...] Bruce was thunderstruck as he was pulled partway into Edward’s office... and then he caught sight of the shrine.
Edwards’s head bobbed eagerly. Now, finally, Bruce would understand the depth of Nygma’s devotion to his idol. He would see how important he was to Nygma.
Notably, the only thing that upsets Bruce about the fact that one of his employees has a serial killer wall dedicated to him at their work station (@heroes-etc: realistically.... IS this the first time this has happened? i doubt it.) is the fact that the shrine includes a picture of him taken directly after his parents’ death, which is obviously a huge trigger for Bruce’s PTSD.
Wayne’s gaze zeroed in on the picture of himself as a young man.
The eyes of Wayne the elder locked with Wayne the younger, and when he slowly turned his scrutiny back to Edward Nygma, Edward could feel the temperature in the cubicle drop to subzero.
Later, once Bruce isn’t being actively reminded of the most traumatizing day of his life, he reflects that he could probably relate to Edward’s specific brand of crazy, and hopes that it’s not too late to try again (it is).
He paused momentarily at Edward Nygma’s cubicle, thinking about the intensity he’d seen in the man’s eyes the other day. Nygma’s ideas might have been a bit odd, but that sort of passion—if properly channeled—could accomplish miracles. That was something Bruce Wayne certainly knew better than anyone else. Perhaps after this fiasco was the time to take Nygma aside under less-pressured circumstances. Start again...
With any other character, I would call bull on their being this unphased by someone being obsessed enough with them to build a stalker shrine, but, like. It’s Batman. He probably has a stalker shrine to Michelle Pfeiffer Catwoman in his cave somewhere. When they start dating, Edward mails the weirdest magazine cutout valentines to his office on the regular, and every time Bruce has to assure his staff that it’s not a ransom letter and it’s just “his boyfriend being romantic.”
9. What is the most embarrassing thing they have done in front of each other?
I mean, by most people’s standards, any one of the things that Edward does in front of Bruce could easily be the most embarrassing thing to happen to them in their lifetime. But for the most part, Edward seems blissfully free of that kind of self-consciousness. He accidentally introduces himself to Bruce as “[extended moaning sound] Bruce Wayne” and shakes it off without even registering his mistake. Even when he feels like Bruce has rejected him and his project, his emotional state is more shocked, saddened, and angry than it is ashamed. He does apologize to Bruce, during the scene where they first meet, for holding on to his hand too long during their handshake. And by “handshake” I mean that Bruce extends his hand to be shaken, and Edward just grabs on and holds it without any motion whatsoever for the entire first half of their conversation. Which might be the only time he ever apologizes in the entire movie. So I’ll say that was his moment of embarrassment.
Bruce only really embarrasses himself in front of Alfred, but Edward does manage to trick Bruce into getting scanned by his mind reading device at the Nygmatech party. Being tricked in general would be pretty awkward for Bruce, since this movie goes out of its way to show the audience how SMART and CLEVER and KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT BRAINWAVES Bruce is at every opportunity. But being tricked into getting your mind read is about a million times more embarrassing than just running into a wall like some kind of Looney Tune. Obviously having access to Bruce’s mind allows Edward to figure out that his former boss/current obsessee is Batman, but also it’s just got to be super weird in there. Bruce is a bizarre man.
12. What first changes when it starts getting serious?
Whether he’s idolizing Bruce or plotting his destruction, Edward is still seeing the subject of his lifelong obsession as a larger than life exaggeration of the real man. Some of that pedestal would probably survive into the beginning of a romantic relationship, but by the time they got serious Edward would have had to recognize that Bruce has both positive and negative traits. He would also have had to grapple with the fact that the man he once assumed would make everything in his life better is a lot of work to be around, especially in this movie’s continuity where the trauma of his family’s death and his guilt over allowing enemies like Joker to die are genuinely affecting Bruce’s day-to-day functionality.
(A lot of things, Chase.)
Edward’s introduction scene demonstrates that he doesn’t see Bruce as having these kinds of problems. His Escapism Wish Fulfillment Device TM is clearly a very personal project for him, since he, you know. Is kind of already living in a Bruce-centric fantasy world.
When he’s pitching it to Bruce, however, he states that he doesn’t think someone like Bruce would ever need to escape reality (which could just be ingratiating flattery, but he barely seems aware of what he’s saying at the time because he’s too busy staring with his mouth open at Bruce putting on glasses).
(Side note: an interjection from @heroes-etc
Anyway, moving on.)
Obviously we know he’s wrong, since Bruce escapes his reality every night by dressing up like a bat and scaring people. Normally that’s just subtext (or me being cynical and creating subtext), but Batman Forever introduced a hot psychiatrist who is constantly poking at Batman for being a power fantasy created by a traumatized mind to cope with intense feelings of helplessness in childhood.
The novelization makes it clear that it’s not the illusion of perfection that Edward is attracted to, however. The picture of Bruce in Crime Alley is what kickstarts Edward’s obsession, not because Bruce seemed flawless but because he seemed to be going through similar pain as Edward (whatever Edward’s pain even IS in this continuity). So I think recognizing Bruce’s issues would be less of a dealbreaker and more of a point of connection, were they to get serious.
He saw, there in Bruce Wayne’s face, an intensity that mirrored his own. An anger, a frustration at the hand that fate had dealt him. There were no tears on Bruce’s face. Instead there was a smoldering intelligence that Edward intuitively sensed was on par with his own.
There was something in Bruce’s eyes, something in that gaze. There was Bruce, in a moment of raw emotion, his parents just having been cruelly taken from him. And there was no self-pity. Just cold, hard anger.
[...] Ed still had the newspaper with him when he was walking home from school. Not that he needed it to read; the contents were safely locked away in his skull, thanks to his photographic memory. But he wanted to clip out the articles and pictures about Bruce Wayne. He found the young man fascinating, as if he had discovered a soulmate of sorts.
For Bruce, on the other hand, getting serious presumably just means attempting to include Edward more and more in the found family he builds in the latter half of the 90’s Batman movies. Alfred approving a love interest is not quite as tantamount in this continuity as it is sometimes (Micheal Gough Alfred is pretty laid back), but Bruce is still spending all of his non-Batman, non-socialite time with his butler. So if Edward wants to hang out with Bruce, he has to either get on Alfred’s good side or prepare for a lot of “romantic quality time” where his boyfriend’s dad is glaring at him from the background.
Dick is less important to get on the good side of, since he and Bruce argue all the time in these movies (apparently one of the proposed scripts for Batman & Robin was Bruce kicking Dick out of the house and making him go to college, where Dick would cope with his dad-related anger by bullying his psychology professor Dr. Crane into becoming a supervillain. I personally feel like I deserved to see that Scarecrow origin). So if Dick doesn’t like Bruce’s new boyfriend, it’s just one more thing for them to be catty to each other about.
Alfred’s niece Barbara Wilson on the other hand (who is adorable as a fusion of Barbara Gordon and Julia Pennyworth, do not @ me) would be absolutely vital for Edward to win over, because her opinion could easily either make or break his standing with her uncle. Also Bruce decided to adopt her within five minutes of meeting her, so he’s obviously fond.
19. Where do they go on their first date?
Edward’s fantasy sequence in the novelization makes it obvious enough that he would really, really like to have dinner at Wayne Manor. Hanging out at someone’s house isn’t really a traditional first date, especially if one of you is a billionaire who could have taken you literally anywhere, but clearly none of that matters to Bruce, because that’s exactly the first date he invites Vicki Vale on in Batman (1989).
It’s pretty painfully awkward (“You want to know the truth? I don’t think I’ve ever been in this room before”) until Bruce gives up on the formality and takes her down to eat the rest of their courses with Alfred in the kitchen.
I feel like his first date with Edward could probably go the same way, with a few major differences. One, Edward would have been super enthused about eating in the fancy dining hall, and Bruce would have only suggested finishing their meal in the kitchen because Edward clearly wanted to see As Much Of The Manor As Possible. Two, when Alfred offers to stop embarrassing Bruce and leave them alone for the end of their date, Edward would have insisted he stay and break out the baby albums. You cannot convince me that Alfred is not a scrapbooker. Actually, does what Edward’s doing count as scrapbooking? Maybe they could compare notes.
#riddlebat#batman forever#edward nygma#riddler#bruce wayne#batman#ship meme#i do not actually recommend reading the novelization because it did chase so dirty i still seethe about it sometimes#but it did make edward pretty fucking gay#now the batman & robin novelization i recommend wholeheartedly#because for some reason bruce has a huge crush on mr. freeze#like literally bruce stalked him for a while in his 20's#and his internal narration is constantly monologueing about how handsome victor is#truly george clooney batman is canon gay

BASIC INFORMATION
FULL NAME: Isabelle Sofia Lightwood PRONUNCIATION: ˈɪzəˌbɛl soʊˈfiə laɪtwʊd MEANING: The name Isabelle is a Hebrew baby name. It means: Devoted to God. REASONING: I believe the key word in Isabelle’s name meaning is devoted. Isabelle is a person whose devotion to her family and close ones, much more than the job, or duty, is infinite. Despite her great cynicism about love, and free spirit, and the claims about her nonchalance and immaturity from people around her, she quite clearly can’t help but give herself entirely to them, and tucks away her own private life and anything that matters to her at the smallest sign that her family or friends are in need of her and her support. It could also be called fierce loyalty. (one of the first examples from the books, how she breaks up with meliorn, after he treats her and her family poorly with the seelie court). her devotion to her true self, wavers when under comparison to her devotion to her family, but is also remarkable on all other accounts. NICKNAME(S): Izzy, Iz. PREFERRED NAME(S): Izzy. BIRTH DATE: Unknown May 15th 1991. AGE: 16-17 (books), 19-20 (show) ZODIAC: Taurus. GENDER: Female. PRONOUNS: She/Her. ROMANTIC ORIENTATION: Biromantic. SEXUAL ORIENTATION: Bisexual. NATIONALITY: American. Isabelle was born in the New York City Shadowhunter Institute. ETHNICITY: Caucasian. CURRENT LOCATION: New York, United States of America. LIVING CONDITIONS: Currently residing in the Shadowhunter’s Institute of New York, where she was born and grew up after her parents and big brother were banned from Idris and relocated to New York. TITLE(S): The smart one. Little sister. Best forensic pathologist in New York (show exclusive). Master of Weapons. Heart breaker. Warrior. Informant. Distraction. Diplomat.
↬ INTRODUCTION VIDEO
BACKGROUND
BIRTH PLACE: New York Institute. HOMETOWN: New York City, NY USA. SOCIAL CLASS: The Lightwood family carries a big reputation and honor to its name, and they are, if banned from Alicante, the leaders of the New York Institute, which is not of small importance. Isabelle, therefore, occupies a central place in Shadowhunters’ Society and through her family is/was also directly involved in the leadership of the Institute, until she gave it up. She has had to go through some struggle and hard work to be noticed, in spite of her excellent service to the Clave, since, as the little sister, a lot of attention was drawn out of her, and her youthful behavior and rebel-like reaction to social norms, has caused her to be overlooked more than once (and even threatened to be deruned by Imogen Herondale when disrespecting her). However, her fierceness and bravery have earned her, since, even more status than at the end she cares for, realizing she’s more interested in traveling and living her life, than in being a central key to Clave politics. It’s also mentioned (in the books) that the fact she’s a female might also influence her status, part of it reflecting on the fact she can’t cook because her mother Maryse specifically refused to teach her, so she wouldn’t be stuck behind in the kitchen, but taken seriously as a shadowhunter and become a great warrior. Despite all of this, it’s her temper, bluntness and boldness, that lands her an invitation from the Iron Sisters, to become one of them, during the time Jace had been missing under Jonathan’s influence, and she went with Jocelyn to ask for the Siters’ help. EDUCATION LEVEL: Shadowhunters are generally highly educated, and Isabelle, despite her warrior nature, has been known to be unwavering when studying things she particularly enjoys, such as the History of Weapons. And has, canonically, spent hours reading about close-range combat in the Institute's library. As mentioned before, she has some knowledge in biology and physiology, (and is specialized in the study of Forensics Pathology in the show). Aside from that, she likely knows at least three different languages, and has general skills and knowledge in all different areas of shadowhunting, from history, to geography; from the shadowhunter’s Laws and Accords, to Religion and the selected study of Magic, such as the training to travel through Portals etc. She’s also shown as being quite fascinated by the Iron Sisters as a girl, and seems to know quite a lot of information about the sisterhood and their history and craft (specially show wise). FATHER: Robert Lightwood. MOTHER: Maryse Lightwood. SIBLING(S): Alec Lightwood, and Maxwell Lightwood. Jace Herondale (adopted) BIRTH ORDER: Alec (two years older) - Jace - Isabelle - Max (seven years younger) . CHILDREN: Unknown. (she does wants them though) PET(S): None. OTHER IMPORTANT RELATIONSHIPS: Clary Fairchild. Clary was the first Shadowhunter girl, her age, that Isabelle met/co-lived with, in the books. When Clary met the trio, Isabelle was the first one she spotted, and she caught her attention right away. Isabelle also, when they met, wounded Clary’s wrists by binding them with her whip, when Clary stumbled upon her and her brothers interrogating a demon. In the books, they have a strained relationship at first, since, though Isabelle is curious about Clary, and Clary admires her, there is also jealousy between them, but they eventually grow into a tight friendship. When Jace stops communicating with her, it’s Isabelle who messages and calls Clary. She also hugs Clary and attempts on being overly sweet to make up for her colder behavior before, when she’s trying to be her friend, but Clary says she can just be herself. Isabelle is the one Clary talks with about Alec’s feelings too, and Isabelle asks her not to tell anyone. She’s also more excited to meet Clary because of her influence on Jace, and how Isabelle then first realizes Jace is still capable of true romantic feelings, despite of everything Valentine has done to him. It is also the reason she comes to briefly be angry or rather resentful of Clary while they believe to be siblings and Clary’s presence starts to cause Jace, misery. She gives her a talk about it in COG, but after that, their relationship only straitens further, and they become quite close. In the show, Isabelle is visibly more excited about meeting Clary. She says that “before Clary everything was the same” and “at least now things are interesting”. In the show their jealousy is brief, if even there, and they quickly come to a close relationship, and to lean on each other. Isabelle takes Clary under her wing as an untrained shadowhunter, and grows quite protective of her. She’s there for Clary for the rough patches, helps her train, and says things like “You have me, and that’s not going to change.” and “I hate to leave you.” when she applies to lead a mission out of the Institute to the Iron Sisters. It’s clear Isabelle is dedicated to her. Simon Lewis. Simon and Isabelle meet when Simon goes after Clary after Jace takes her to the institute. At first, Simon hits on her to try and get Clary jealous, and Isabelle shows some interest in him. But after he gets kidnapped by a vampire clan, and though Isabelle still saves his life a couple of times, their flirting and beginnings of a relationship comes to a stop. Simon is the one who, in the books, becomes Isabelle’s first love, and the person who is capable to make her want to get over her fear and distrust of males in romantic relationships, and give it a try, however hesitant Simon, himself, may be. They go through a lot of ups and downs and break up and get back together plenty of times before settling down. However, I will not be portraying it, Roleplay wise. So far, their relationship is amicable. Magnus Bane. Magnus Bane is Isabelle’s future brother-in-law. When they meet, Isabelle asks Alec if he got along with him, because she thought/hoped he would. Isabelle and Magnus bond over their fashion-driven, dominant, vibrant, personalities and their love for Alec. They grow to be good friends, and (in the books) Isabelle leaves a long rant in his phone when he and Alec briefly break up. Sebastian Verlac. Sebastian is her main enemy, as he is for most of the characters. In both the books and the show, Isabelle is the first to meet Sebastian and the one he first approaches as way into the others’ lives. In both cases, they have flirty relationship at first, more so in the show, where he’s been the one to “save her” from a greater demon, and seemingly help her on the road to overcome her venom addiction, under false pretenses. In the books, that relationship ends when after her disregard of her little brother’s warnings, he ends up dead by Sebastian’s hand, and she almost dies herself during his attack. After that, she blames herself a lot for the incident and swears to avenge Max. She ends up beating Sebastian up badly, and though she doesn’t kill him, herself, as she swore, she helps Jace do it, in their last battle. She also cuts his hand off, during the first war, with her whip. She hates him more than anyone she’s ever hated in her life. PREVIOUS RELATIONSHIPS: Meliorn, The Seelie. Meliorn is her first metioned-by-name boyfriend, both in the books and in the show. He’s a Seelie, knight from the royal court, and Isabelle and he have a brief but somewhat intense relationship (specially show wise). In the books, Meliorn is the one to lead them to the Seelie Court. In the show, Isabelle goes to trial, for saving Meliorn from certain death under the Silent Brothers’ interrogation. She breaks up with him in the books for not speaking up for them with the Seelie Queen, and in the show because she wants to show her mother that she can be a serious shadowhunter and take more responsibility on the family, so Alec doesn’t have to take on all the weight. Raphael Santiago (show wise). In the show, Isabelle goes through a yin-fen addiction, and yin-fen is described as a tamer, manufactured version of vampire venom. When she runs out of the substance, and Aldertree demands she obeys his commands for more, she refuses and after hearing from Magnus that vampire venom is the origin, she goes looking for them. A group of vampires almost kills her, but Raphael shows up and sends them away, as leader of the clan. He saves her, but then succumbs to his own addiction to blood and bites her, himself. They grow into a co-dependent, complicated relationship, until Magnus figures it out, and Alec find out. Briefly after that, Isabelle realizes how dependent they’ve become when Raphael hides her phone, so she can’t get her brother’s messages for help, so she won’t put herself in danger. She goes to Alec’s aid, and breaks up with Raphael, though she’s glad to see he’s survived Valentine’s attack to the Institute. Others. In both the books and the show, Isabelle is said to have had multiple flings and boyfriends in the past. Simon is warned, after he starts flirting with her, that she’ll “break his heart after she tires of him” by Jace. Isabelle is described as aloof and distant in her relationships, burning fast and ending them quickly. She’s also known to have got her boyfriends in trouble, when they follow her into her adventurous life (specially night life). When Simon becomes a rat, after drinking a faerie drink at Magnus’ party, under Isabelle’s supposed supervision, she cries, and Alec consoles her, telling her it wasn’t the first time, but also that it wasn’t her fault. When Simon confronts her about these things, she tells him the truth: that her behavior was born from having had her heart broken as a child when her mother told her about her father’s infidelity, and that, however, she never got involved with boys that actually could fall in love with her, because contrary to popular believe she did not wish to break anyone’s heart, and had never done so, as the boys she went out with were never that interested in her as a person, to begin with, Simon included at first. IMPORTANT EVENTS: When Jace was brought to the Institute, to live under her parents’ tutelage, Isabelle at first thought that he’d be fragile and vulnerable, and need help, after watching his father’s murder. When he refused her, at first she was hurt and upset, but they got over it once they started training together, and Jace found out Isabelle was the only one that could keep up with him. They bonded strongly over it, after that. Meeting Clary. As described before, when she met Clary was both in the books and show, when her life took a turn from her daily duties and training, to be engaged in a full Shadowhunter Civil War. That was when life got “interesting”. In the books, Isabelle finds out about the fact her father cheated/used to cheat, on her mother when she was 13, by her mother’s own word. That moment changed her and shaped her life from then on. It was by her mother’s own words that she found out, and she said then that she “could never trust a man”. Isabelle took that to heart, and started distrusting males deeply. She swore she would never fall in love, and let a man break her heart, like her father broke her mother’s one. It was a strong part of why she bounced from relationship to relationship, before things could get serious and deeper feelings could be involved, and why her relationship with Simon was so rocky. In the show, this is more meekly portrayed somewhat, and her relationship to her father is much warmer than in the books. It might also be why in the books she is described as cold, though she’s anything but to her siblings and loved ones, but in the show her personality is warmer and more open to strangers, male or female, or why her relationships so far have been deeper and more emotional than compared to the ones in the books. This is a key element to her characterization, and for my characterization, this follows book canon more strictly. The death of her little brother Max Lightwood, largely influenced her, as she was present at the time, and made her relationship with her father even worse. As mentioned, she blames herself for not listening to Max, or not being quick enough to save him, and from then on, becomes even MORE fiercely protective of her other brothers, and when Jace goes missing, not months later, she is deeply unsettled by it and fears losing him like they’d lost Max. It gives her a new vulnerability that she hadn’t allowed herself before. IMPORTANT ISABELLE SHOW MOMENTS MY ISABELLE LIGHTWOOD HEADCANONS COMPILATION ARRESTS?: Yes (show wise). After interfering with justice when she helped break Meliorn free from interrogation, and helping steal the Mortal Cup. She was cleared without jail time, after a day of house arrest. Amost (book wise). Imogen Herondale threatens to arrest and / or derune her when Isabelle tries to lie to protect Jace from her wrath, after she catches him talking to his father in his ship. PRISON TIME?: None. House Arrest.
OCCUPATION & INCOME
PRIMARY SOURCE OF INCOME: Resources/Payment from being a Shadowhunter. SECONDARY SOURCE OF INCOME: None. TERTIARY SOURCE(S) OF INCOME: None. APPROXIMATE AMOUNT PER YEAR: Unknown. CONTENT WITH THEIR JOB (OR LACK THERE OF)?: Izzy enjoys being a Shadowhunter. She loves their culture, their history, their battle to protect mundanes, their principles, the essence of being a nephilim, and the fun they get to have in the way. Her first loyalty, however is to her family and friends, above all, moral and law, and she loves being a part of the Shadowhunter world more than she loves the bureaucratic job itself, or the attitudes of the Clave. That is shown when she refuses taking over as Head of the Institute, once her mother steps down and her brother declines. She respects the Shadowhunter history but thinks things could be a lot better if people used their brains more, and followed blindly less. Being a shadowhunter is just where she belongs, and she’d be devastated to be yanked away from her world, but not because of the job specifically, despite how good she is at it. She is more than her job. PAST JOB(S): None. SPENDING HABITS: Isabelle likes to spend at large when she’s able to. She wouldn’t put spending money over her family’s sake or her duties, but it’s something she enjoys a lot, when it comes to shopping, and whenever possible. She loves having different outfits and preparing her looks every day, and having something exciting to wear can brighten up a dull day. She specially adores buying shoes and underwear, and getting to show the first off in their hunts. It’s one of her favorite pastimes, it feeds her confidence, and makes her feel better when things are hard. However, a few of her favorite things are not bought at all, but actually gifts and heirlooms passed on through her family, and sent to the institute by the Iron Sisters. For example her jewelry that doubles as weapons, such as bracelets, ankle bracelets, hair pins etc. Note: in the books, the Lightwoods are not described as wealthy and Isabelle’s shopping is still a great part of her, but done mostly in thrift shops and through sales. MOST VALUABLE POSSESSION: Her electrum snake whip, that is often used as a bracelet around her wrist, and “comes to life” shifting forms as needed, or intended by Isabelle. It was given to her by her father when she turned twelve. It’s her most trusted weapon and wielding the whip is one of her specialties on her offense and defense. It makes her feel safe and empowered. Secondly, the Lightwood family necklace with a red ruby gem that glows in the presence of demons. It was given to her by Magnus, as the necklace belonged to him before having ended up with the nephilim (in the show), and it was passed down to her from her female ancestors (in the books). In the show, they had traded it to him in exchange for Clary’s memories, but since those were never recovered, and they helped save Magnus from a Valentine ambush, he returned it to them, and gave it to Isabelle. In the show, the necklace was destroyed by Azazel, a greater demon, when he attacked Isabelle, thinking she could lead him to the Mortal Cup, but that event is disregarded by this characterization.
SKILLS & ABILITIES
Nephilim physiology: Being Nephilim, Isabelle possesses a variety of enhanced physical and mental abilities granted to her by the blood of Raziel in her veins and also by the angelic Marks of the Gray Book. She also has power to perform tasks unique to their species, such as the ability to use and call on the power of angels for their seraph blades. This includes enhanced strength, agility, stamina, and coordination, which only improves over time and practice. (x)
Parabatai bond: As is not uncommon, Isabelle never wanted a parabatai.
PHYSICAL STRENGTH: Great physical strength, that may be enhanced by runes. Isabelle is mentioned to be specially strong. OFFENSE: Isabelle is an offensive soldier. She is often on the front lines with Jace, in the attack, unlike her brother Alec who covers for them. She is used as “bait” or “distraction” for demons and other enemies alike, both in the books and the shows, and put in the center of the action. She is a highly trained and skilled shadowhunter, and mentioned to be the only one able to keep up with Jace (and his extra angel blood) in the training room. She has, as well, beat up Sebastian, who is the only person stronger than Jace, himself, due to his demon blood. In both show and books she is frequently shown demonstrating her abilities, saving her teammates several times, and facing off demons, vampires, werewolves, and Circle members. She is even shown (show wise) defeating several Circle shadowhunters even while deeply weakened by vampire venom withdrawal, to save her brother’s life. DEFENSE: Isabelle’s abilities also make her good at defensive moves, it’s just that she prefers to be on the attack, but she’s very capable defensively. SPEED: Great speed, that may be enhanced by runes. INTELLIGENCE: Highly intelligent and intuitive, with a scientific specialization, show wise. ACCURACY: Great accuracy, that may be enhanced by runes. She shows an specially high level of skill and proficiency wielding the whip. In the show, she’s shown even as a young girl, striking candles to extinguish them, with her whip. In the books, she tears off Sebastian’s hand to keep him from killing Jace during the first war. AGILITY: Great agility, that may be enhanced by runes. She shows that ability even on the high heels, which she wears almost daily. Isabelle moves like a dancer. STAMINA: Great stamina, that may be enhanced by runes. She is noticeably stronger than the average shadowhunter. TEAMWORK: Isabelle is good with teamwork. She doesn’t mind not taking the lead, and goes along with different plans, as long as she is a part of it, and can keep her teammates safe and be on forefront of attack. She grew up working as a team with her brothers Alec and Jace, and would rather not work alone, her only problem is with being left behind. TALENTS: Whip wielding. Close range combat expert. SHORTCOMINGS: Can be cold and aloof in life, but she also can be reckless and very forward during battle, putting herself in danger without fear. LANGUAGE(S) SPOKEN: English, Ancient Greek, Latin (book wise), also Spanish and French (show wise). Isabelle mentions Hodge only taught them Ancient Greek and Latin, but also the desire to learn more languages, including French, which I take she would have. GLASSES/CONTACTS?: No. DOMINANT HAND: Right. HEIGHT: 5′9′’ feet (or 175 cm) WEIGHT: Unknown. BUILD: Thin, but strong, curvy and voluptuous, non delicate bone structure. She sees herself as “big”, and not delicate as she wished to be, as opposed to other girls like Clary (i.e. in the show she says Clary is “lucky” to be “so flat-chested”), in the books, Jace tells Clary, that while she’s jealous of Isabelle, Isabelle is jealous of her too, for being “petite” and “delicate”). EXERCISE HABITS: Constant because of her daily training of her shadowhunter skills. SKIN TONE: Pale, white (books). Darker, toned (show). TATTOOS: None, however, her runes (permanent show wise, and temporary book wise) can be considered or seen as tattoos, in which case, she has them on her entire body, specially torso, neck and arms. PEIRCINGS: None. MARKS/SCARS: Many. Isabelle has plenty of scars from training, battling, and book-wise, she has scars left by the runes when they disappear, since they burn the skin. But she has specially noticeable scars from her own whip that are created on her by Sebastian’s hand, after she attacks him, he gets a hold of her whip and whips her several times with it, before Jace can save her back. Clary and Simon both take notice of those, and say it only makes her look more beautiful, and warrior like. NOTABLE FEATURES: Striking dark eyes, high cheek bones, pretty nose, full lips, elegant traces, curvy build, long, sleek hair, long eyelashes. USUAL EXPRESSION: Smiling, smirking, charming. CLOTHING STYLE: Isabelle is fashion savvy, and prefers clothing that draws attention, whether by color or by the cuts and fit to her body. JEWELRY: Lightwood family necklace. Gabriel Lightwood was notably smoking. It is rumored that one Consul agreed with everything my great-great aunt Felicia Lightwood ever said, because when she spoke all he heard was ‘Foxy foxy foxy.’ If you break up with Alec, you will not only be losing one stone cold fox, but a family of foxes. I will pass down the word to my children’s children. No Lightwood is ever going to so much as wink at you in a bar. Think about that. Think about being Lightwoodless and lonely five hundred years from now, in a sad and chilly nightclub on the moon.” FAVORITE QUOTE (ABOUT): “… Isabelle looked stunning with her hair swept up in a loose knot. Clary knew she’d never be able to pull off that sort of elegance in a million years, and she didn’t care. The Hate U Give
“The Hate U Give Little Infants Fucks Everybody.” The phrase originally made popular in the '90s by Tupac as an acronym for "THUG LIFE," inspired another work of art, Angie Thomas’ debut novel, The Hate U Give. The book so successfully connected with a young generation grappling with gun violence and police brutality that it has remained on The New York Times’ bestseller list since its release in February 2017. Now, the film adaptation of its powerful story will attempt to reach an even bigger audience with its Black Lives Matter message.
Both the book and movie follow Starr Carter, a black teenager well-versed in code-switching between her black community in Garden Heights and the prep school her parents send her and her siblings to in the ostentatiously white and wealthy Williamson neighborhood. When the audience first meets her in George Tillman Jr.’s film, her stern-voiced dad, Maverick (Russell Hornsby), is teaching his children what to do if a police officer stops the car they’re in. Put their hands on the dashboard; do as they say. It’s the difference between life and death. She is nine-years-old in this scene, her older brother is ten and the youngest member of the Carter family is just a year old, still fussing in his mother’s arms.
The story then jumps forward to when Starr (Amandla Stenberg) is a vibrant 16-year-old who plays on her school’s basketball team and finds love in a goofy yet earnest white classmate named Chris (K.J. Apa). But the unintended consequence of having one foot in two different social circles is that you never really feel balanced in either. She feels out-of-place both at her white prep school where white kids love to use black slang and at a neighborhood party her friend brings her to so Starr can help her out in a fight. Starr’s awkward feelings are pushed aside for a moment when an old childhood friend and first crush, Khalil (Algee Smith), approaches her with a smile completed by dimples. A fight breaks out at the party, interrupting their meet-cute, and the two drive off in Khalil’s car. On their way back to Starr’s home, the two teens reminisce about old times and even share a kiss. Then, red and blue lights flash. A cop pulls them over for some unexplained reason, and Khalil gets defensive. Starr tries to coach him through her father’s warnings: hands on the dashboard, do what they say. When the cop walks away to run Khalil’s license, the teenager carelessly reaches for his hairbrush to pass the time. Shots ring out, killing Khalil. The officer handcuffs Starr next to her dying friend. He had mistaken the hairbrush in the boy’s hand as a weapon and shot first before asking any questions.
The event is a seismic one for the community and for Starr, who finds herself swept up in the media frenzy and the outrage. She suffers from post traumatic stress and seems to wander the halls of her school, unsure of what’s she doing there at all. Although only a short drive away, her classmates seem entirely disconnected from the problems facing the neighborhood next door. This exasperates Starr, and she begins breaking rank from one of her white girlfriends who really doesn’t understand what’s going on. Her boyfriend, Chris, stumbles through a crash course in how to be an alley, trying his hardest to help her.
The movie feels instructional without getting too preachy, taking time to explain various inequalities and barriers facing black Americans, typically in exchanges between father and daughter. In learning the ways of this unjust system, Starr decides not to accept things the way they are. Her outlook reflects the kind of youth-led movements that have sprung up from Black Lives Matter and the marches against gun violence in schools. The status quo just simply won’t go unchallenged this time.
Stenberg, whose previous credits include other YA fare like “The Hunger Games” and “Darkest Minds,” carries the difficult part well, growing from a carefree teen to traumatized kid to a natural born leader before our eyes. She’s hardly alone in her efforts as the supporting cast includes Issa Rae, Anthony Mackie and Common. As Starr’s parents, Hornsby and Regina Hall also share a nuanced and complicated dynamic—a loving couple who feel differently about how best to raise their children, in the difficult neighborhood in which they grew up or elsewhere.
To visually mirror the experience of switching between the worlds of Garden Heights and Williamson, the lighting and color of the scenes also change from warm, familiar tones (Garden Heights) to washed out blue hues (Williamson). The scenes in the Carter household look inviting and well lit, bringing to mind the comfort of a loving family. When Starr is at school, her face looks washed out and pale, as if the screen was trying to mute the colors of everyone’s skin to look the same. She tries so desperately to fit in this environment, she sacrifices who she is in more ways than just avoiding using the slang terms her classmates have co-opted.
In my screening of “The Hate U Give,” there were tears, gasps, laughter and cheers. A shiver rippled through my skin when the shots rang out, and I choked back sobs in many more scenes. It may be a popular movie with arguably simple messages, but it delivers them in emotionally effective ways. We feel for Starr and we are with her in moments like when she confronts a racist friend or questions a reporter for fixating on Khalil’s checkered past. We get a sense of the isolation she feels in her school’s hallway and when she’s forced to watch her friend bleed to death. If the story ever feels too basic, too “intro to race in America,” it’s because this is the story of a 16-year-old girl who’s learning that the world is even worse than what she knew. In the audience, there will likely be many more girls who will either be hearing a story like Starr’s for the first time or recognizing their experience onscreen for the first time.
