downtime (a night off)
also on ao3
//
It’s a rare phenomenon that all Avengers are under the same roof.
It isn’t that they don’t enjoy each other’s company, or that they are in any way adverse to coming together for times of crisis and shit’s hit the fan, or that there is some overarching agenda that depends on them being kept separate unless absolutely necessary. It is simply, a matter of scheduling.
Thor likes to split his time between Asgard and Earth, and goes back frequently to provide company to his brother, worried that Loki will feel abandoned by him yet again if he were not to show his face that often. Those visits never go well however, and when Thor is back on Earth, he seeks out Jane Foster, to lick his wounds in private before he is prepared to face his team.
Natasha and Clint are yet to quit their day job at SHIELD, and Fury frequently calls them away for missions that they can’t hear about, speak about, or even know about until they’re in the middle of the assignment. It isn’t uncommon for them to be summoned at odd hours of the day, sometimes in the middle of the afternoon, and sometimes when they’re just about to sit down for dinner.
Tony, for all his posturing that he has no other focus apart from Iron Man, still has duties and responsibilities at Stark Industries. Not being CEO may have considerably reduced the load, but he’s still the face of the company, the Stark behind Stark Industries, and Pepper likes to use him to remind their investors of that from time to time. Just to keep everybody in line.
In the days after the New York Invasion, after the public had adjusted their worldview, after the cleanup, after things reached some sort of normalcy -  Steve was nowhere to be found. He packed the clothes he had into a duffel bag that fit neatly over his shoulder, and took his SHIELD issued motorcycle cross-country, exploring the America that had become during his extended sleep. Apart from a couple of updates to inform everybody that he was still in fact alive, and hadn’t fallen back into the ice, nobody heard from him for months - until he showed up back at Stark Tower, startling both Tony and Bruce, to say that he was reporting for duty.
Bruce has made his home in Stark Tower, two floors below Tony’s penthouse suite, but he hasn’t forgotten his days on the run, the people who helped him, the people he helped. They have a lot of downtime as Avengers, and he likes to use it out of the country, in the places he used to call home, helping people the way he used to. He doesn’t go alone anymore, instead he manages a team under Doctors Without Borders, but it still gives him the same sense of fulfilment it used to in his days of obscurity.
It’s a rare phenomenon that all Avengers are under the roof, not because they don’t like each other, but because their singular lives are too vast and rich for them to meet frequently and constantly.
This just means that when their schedules allow for a precious opening when the team can meet without fear of an alien invasion or imminent global destruction - they try their hardest to make the absolute best of it.

“Has anybody ever told you,” Clint pauses, smacking his lips and squinting his eyes, “that you have the most fantastic ass?”
In front of him, Tony is swaying from side to side, as if moving to music that nobody else can hear, but he still manages to look unbearably smug at Clint’s comment, “Everyday baby. You didn’t think it was my winning personality that got so many people into bed, did you?”
Natasha pipes up from where she’s sunk into the couch, tilting her head up so that her voice isn’t muffled by the cushions, “I thought it was your money.”
Tony whirls around, and points the vodka bottle he’s clutching at her, “That too. But mainly my ass.”
“Barton is right, Friend Stark,” Thor tilts his head, his gaze falling down, “You have a glorious behind. Asgard’s halls are filled with the most voluptuous of courtesans, and I can’t say any of them have a behind that compares to yours.”
“Eyes off his behind,” Steve grumbles, his arms wrapping around Tony’s waist and pulling him close to his chest, so that Steve can hook his chin over Tony’s shoulder. He isn’t as drunk as the rest of them, because Bruce and Tony are still working on combinations of alcohol that work against the super soldier serum, but he’s got a pleasant buzz going on; and it makes him want to bundle Tony up in his arms and never let go.
“That’s my behind,” Steve squeezes around Tony’s waist for effect, “No more staring.”
Tony jerks his head to the side, and presses a sloppy side to the underside of Steve’s jaw, and Steve goes limp around him. This thing between them is still new, undefined, and neither of them want to do anything to jeopardise it. It feels too big for that, too important.
“All in good fun Cap,” Clint says in a slurred voice, “No need to go all cave-man on Tony. You’ve staked your claim, pissed around him, whatever you want to call it.”
Next to him, Bruce wrinkles his nose and whacks Clint upside on the head. He’s the only one out of the six of them who’s currently sober, electing to not drink because he has no idea how the Hulk will react to booze.
“Don’t be crass Clint,” Natasha says, nodding at Bruce approvingly, “I think it’s cute. It’s sweet that Mom and Dad are in love.”
“Hey!” Tony frowns at Natasha, “Who are you calling Mom and Dad? And which one am I?”
“You’re Mom!” The response is simultaneous, and any complaints that Tony has are immediately drowned out by Thor bellowing in laughter.
“Steve,” Tony says urgently, in a soft tone, and when Steve turns his head to look at Tony, his bottom lip is jutting out, “Steve, do you really think I’m the Mom?”
“Sweetheart, you have three robot babies down in your workshop, of course you’re the Mom.”
Tony nods, seemingly satisfied by that answer, and leans more back into Steve’s embrace.
“Okay,” he says after a couple of seconds, “I’m the Mom. I can live with that. I liked my mom more anyway.”
Steve opens his mouth to reply, but he gets cut off by Clint, who yells, “Stark! You have any of those fancy simulations you got in the training rooms up here? I want to see how many shots of tequila it takes to make me stop shooting straight!”
Tony wrestles out of Steve’s embrace and grabs the bottle of tequila that’s lying on the table, “If you think you’re shooting up my living room you’ve got another thing coming Legolas!”
He hauls Clint off the couch and they stumble into each other, making their way to the stairwell, presumably to get to the training room.
“You got the salt and the lemons?” Steve asks Natasha, and she nods, “I can go grab it from the kitchen now.”
“Best to probably grab some water too,” Bruce adds, standing up to walk with her, “So that Tony and Clint don’t accidentally impale themselves.”
Thor stands up with a giant lurch, ‘Fear not! I shall watch over Friend Barton and Friend Stark, to ensure that they don’t injure themselves.”
He strides away in the same direction that Tony and Clint took before any of them can say anything, and Steve and Natasha share a look.
“We need to get down there fast,” Steve says, “Somehow I feel like Thor will do more harm than good.”
“Agreed. You catch up with Thor and make sure he doesn’t accidentally electrocute everybody, me and Bruce will meet you down there with supplies and a couple bottles of water”
“Sounds like a plan,” Steve nods, and rushes off after Thor, quickening his steps when he hears Tony yell out in joy.
It was a rare phenomenon that the Avengers were under the same roof, but the best of times always came from it.

It was the end of the day, your favorite part. This week has been hellish, and Hotch promised everyone to take the weekend off for themselves. Penelope and JJ were talking about being with their significant others, Emily wanted to go to Vegas, Morgan was going on a small road trip, and Rossi and Hotch didn’t really give details on what they were doing, but you had a feeling you knew what it was. Hotch had a four-year-old to take care of, and Rossi probably was working on wife number five at this point.
When the week started, you promised yourself that you were going to go home, take a long bath with your favorite scent and a bottle of wine, and then stay in your pajamas the entire weekend binge-watching your favorite shows. Usually, your weekends were filled with overtime, paperwork, and listening to your teammates bicker at one another, so the thought of doing nothing all weekend sounded like Heaven.
Lastly, there was Spencer. He does the same thing he always does whenever he had some downtime: learn and read. He could never seem to stop reading because his brain was always eager to learn. And it was never the trashy novel that you believe every person should read at least once in their life; no, it was academic books that only he seemed to understand. The only part you loved about him reading those kinds of books was that he told you all about it the next day. Granted, you never knew what he was talking about, but it made him so happy to share what he learned.
That’s all you ever wanted Spencer to have: happiness. He rarely sees it, so whenever he finds it, you vowed to never be the person to take that from him. He was cautious, always did things by the book, and rarely ventured out to do something new and exciting. Maybe that’s why you two gravitated towards each other because you were the exact opposite of him. Adventure and thrill are what fueled you. It’s why you were so good at your job because you genuinely loved what you did despite seeing the horrors of reality.
Spencer envied that part of you. He loved to hear stories of when you went skydiving, hiking through the Grand Canyon, cliff jumping, and so much more. You were seeing the world in its true beauty, and he was kind of jealous. It took a lot out of him to even do the job he has because it was hard for him to come out of his shell. He kept to himself and didn’t like other people touching him except for the team. It amazed you why he would continue to take the subway when it was always crowded, but you let him be. Everyone else drove to work, but he opted to take public transportation. He explained why once, but you’ve forgotten the reason.
It was turning into a late one on Friday and everyone else had already left the office except for you and Spencer. You two must have had the same thoughts because you decided to get all your paperwork done before going home so you didn’t have to do it on Monday morning. It was nearing midnight when you finished your last file. Looking over your desk to Spencer’s which was right across from you, he was also finishing his last file which meant he was just about ready to go home.
Taking a moment, you leaned back in your chair to get a good look at him. Your desk was a good vantage point to really stare at him without him noticing. He could easily look up and see you being creepy, but he was always invested in his work so it didn’t give him time to look up. The view you were at gave you access to his strong jaw as he flexed it in frustration. His tongue ran over his lips for the tenth time that hour which is another thing you couldn’t stand about the man. He drove you crazy whenever he would lick those damn lips right in front of you. He must know what he’s doing, and if he did, then he didn’t seem to care how it affected you.
“You done?” you asked.
“Yeah, I am. Are you?” he asked, flipping his file shut.
“Finished about five minutes ago.”
“And you were just sitting there?”
“I had a pretty good view,” you winked, causing a blush to creep onto his cheeks.
“What are you doing this weekend?” he asked as he got up and gathered his things into his messenger bag.
“Binge-watching Game of Thrones after I take a long bath to soothe my muscles. What about you?”
“I wanted to get in about twenty books before Monday. I have a list of some I want to read.”
“You know, that will never not amaze me,” you chuckled as the two of you walked to the elevator.
“What will?” he asked when the doors closed behind him.
“How fast your brain can process words. What I wouldn’t give to read that many books in such a short time,” you giggled. Spencer managed to smile, but it was lost when he looked at his watch.
“Shit,” he sighed.
“What is it?” you asked as the doors opened to the parking garage where your motorcycle was.
“The train I usually take isn’t in service right now. I remember they made an announcement saying that the last train left two hours ago. The busses are all down too. I guess I’ll have to walk home.”
“No, you’re not. I can give you a ride. It’s on the way,” you smiled, grabbing the helmet you left on one of the handlebars.
“On that thing?” Spencer gulped.
“What, you scared?” you chuckled.
“You don’t have two helmets. It wouldn’t be safe.”
“You think I would leave the house without two helmets? Here,” you tossed him the one you were holding before reaching into the compartment on the back of the motorcycle and pulling out another helmet, “you can use that one.”
“A total of 5,286 motorcyclists died in crashes in 2016. 41% of fatally injured motorcycle drivers were not wearing helmets,” Spencer spits out the facts as if he just happened to know it.
“Luckily for you, you have a helmet.”
“But--”
“Reid, do you need elbow pads and knee pads too?” you teased him. “I have some if you really want them. Come on, would I ever put you in danger? You’re not going to die or get hurt.”
“Okay,” he whispered, sliding on the helmet. Grinning, you put your own on before starting up the bike. Getting on, you waited until Spencer was behind you before taking off. Almost immediately, he grabbed your waist and held tight, scared of falling off it.
“You’ll be fine, Spencer. Nothing is going to happen to you. Why ruin such a pretty face?” you teased him once more. The cars were nothing as you whizzed by them, but the lights were so pretty at this time of night. Spencer got scared whenever you would change lanes without really looking over your shoulder to check to see if it was safe. He knew you knew what you were doing, but it was still scary to him.
Approaching a traffic light, you were still at a far enough distance that if the light turned yellow, the proper thing to do was to slow down. Just your luck, the light turned yellow… but you weren't slowing down.
“You’re not going to make it. Y/N, slow down!” Spencer urged.
“Wanna bet?” you grinned, cranking the gas up. Spencer pulled you into his body tighter, but you had to ignore it if you wanted to make this light and not cause any accidents. The light turned red just as you entered the intersection, and Spencer watched as you fled from the would-be scene.
“You’re insane!” Spencer yelled. Approaching his apartment building, you slowed down to a stop right in front of it. Spencer didn’t let go of you just yet because his mind was still processing what just happened and what could have happened if you were a tad too slow.
“Spencer, you can let go now,” you chuckled.
“I don’t think I can,” he whispered. Grinning, you grabbed his hands from the front and unfolded them so that you were set free. His arms felt nice around you, but he probably didn’t want to be with you for much longer. He had twenty books to get through this weekend, and you’d only serve as a distraction. Both of you got off the bike, and he took off his helmet and returned it to you. Placing it in the compartment, you turned to him with your helmet squished between your arm and your right hip.
“That wasn’t so bad, was it?” you laughed.
“I am never riding on that thing again,” he shook his head.
“Well, have a good night,” you smiled, going to place your helmet on again when he spoke. He didn’t want you to go because despite being scared, he actually had fun. He loved the kind of person you were, and if he let you walk away now, then he would never forgive himself.
“Actually, I don’t think I should be alone. I’m still too scared, and I think some company would be best for me right now. Would you like to come in and have some coffee?”
You knew he was bullshitting you right now, but the fact that he would make up an excuse to get you to stay made your heart sing with the thought of endless possibilities.
“I’d like that,” you grinned.
Your bath and binge-watching could wait another weekend.

I have been playing it for about a year and have gotten pretty good. My special skill is talking with people I’ve never met before. Zero shyness. Mizuki: My hobby is shopping. My special skill is eliminating my presence. No matter the circumstance, I can disappear with ease and have people wondering where I went (laughs). Yuto: Baseball. I played it from second grade to my first year of high school. I also love watching it. Soya: To debate and talk about the world news and topics. Ryuto: Playing the ukulele is a recent hobby. I bought it when I was abroad, and I got really into it after I played it as a break from the test studying period. My special skills is turning things I hate into things I like. Such an example is acrobatics! 5. On average, how many hours of sleep do you get a night? Ryo: 6 hours. I sleep at midnight and wake up at 6 in the morning. Mizuki: About 7 hours. Today was 6 hours. Yuto: 8 hours. Today was about 8 hours, but the ideal is 24 hours. I can sleep all day! Soya: 6 hours. I got 11 hours today so I’m super content. Ryuto: 7.5 hours. It was about 6 hours today. 6. What’s your favorite thing to eat lately? Ryo: Beef tongue. I buy a block of beef tongue, cook it in sesame oil, and mix it with some spring onions. Eating it like that is the best. Mizuki: The smell of truffle. (Iwahashi) Genki went to this place and had truffle french fries that were super good and now obsessed with, but I haven’t had the chance to try yet (laughs). Yuto: Convenience store oden. I must have daikon and sometimes I’ll also buy egg and kon’nyaku, too. Soya: Cream croquette. Crispy on the outside and soft, melty center inside. Ryuto: Convenience store kalbi bento. 7. What did you eat today? Ryo: For breakfast, I had yesterday’s leftover yakiniku. For lunch, I had curry. Mizuki: Bacon cheeseburger. Yuto: Kimchi. I wasn’t feeling too well this morning, but I felt better after eating kimchi. Soya: For breakfast ad lunch, I had beef tongue rice my mother made. Ryuto: For breakfast I had cereal. I was studying for tests during lunch so I didn’t get a chance to eat… When I’m immersed in something, my appetite takes a break. 8. How many texts do you send in a day? Ryo: About 50. I have about 10 people I talk with regularly. I call in my downtime, so I don’t text much. Mizuki: Almost zero. I immediately reply when I get something, but I rarely send anything myself. Yuto: About 50. Soya: I don’t answer my phone when I’m busy so zero. I usually only text my family, the group members, senpais, and some other people, so maybe about 4 a day. Ryuto: About 3. I call more than text. 9. Who in Johnny’s did you message most recently? Ryo: Shime-chan (Shimekake Ryuya) texted me, “Why didn’t you come to the stage show,?” and I replied, “Because of work and tests.” I want to go if I could~ Mizuki: Nishimura Takuya of Kansai Johnny’s Jr. When I have time, I’d ask him how he is and he sends back a nice reply. Yuto: 7MEN Samurai’s Sasaki Taiko and I entered the company at the same time, so he’s always being cheeky with me. For instance, he saw the TV show I appeared on recently, “Everyone looked amazing …except for Yuto” (laughs). Soya: Tanaka Juri-kun. He gave me advice on the rap I did for “The Shounen Club.” Ryuto: (Sasaki) Taiko. He wants to get something simple across but can’t find the right words for it so the text comes off as angry (laughs). 10. What’s your favorite emoji? Ryo: Cute, funny faces emojis. Mizuki: LINE stamp of the white, round character with his thumbs up. Yuto: Stamps of my favorite anime character. I use the “OK” and “Thank You” ones a lot. Soya: Surreal character stamp of a slim kid. The one where he’s bowing going, “G’mornnnnn!!” is convenient so I use it a lot. Ryuto: Grinning and laughing white bear. I like the relaxed, half-baked ones. 11. What’s on your homescreen? Ryo: A picture taken at Disneyland of JUNIOR 5, including Saku-chan. Mizuki: It’s completely white. I can see the icons easier this way. Yuto: A picture of Mount Fuji I took outside of the hotel window on a family trip. Soya: It’s a photo of a single red rose I purchased. The photo quality on my phone is really good so the red is so vivid and beautiful. Ryuto: The view of the ocean at sunset. Around the summer, it was of Yuto’s expression upon taking a photo with Matsumoto Jun-kun in the dressing room. 12. What’s the most recent photo you took? Ryo: Of my own hair. Just dyed it black. Mizuki: Choreo video. Yuto: A picture of Matsumoto Jun-kun during his concert. The pose he was during while wearing pink gloves was really cool so I took a picture of it without thinking about it when I saw it in a magazine or something. Soya: A picture with friends taken in front of the emergency stairwell on the day of the school culture festival. But we took it with the light the wrong direction so it was a big fail (laughs). Ryuto: Taiko holding a ukulele. 13. What sort of pictures do you have the most in your camera roll? Ryo: Pictures with friends. When we go out, we ask people nearby to take photos for us. Mizuki: I don’t really take photos, they’re pretty much all choreography videos. Yuto: Photos of the members’ selfies when they steal my phone. I dunno what kind of faces Hashimoto-kun makes, Saku-chan’s photos are of eyes wide open, etc. (laughs). Soya: Family. My older sister loves photos so there’s a lot of everyone. I’m like cut off to the side. Ryuto: Of the members. I turn my camera towards the members in between rehearsals. I have a lot of good faces from Yuto. 14. What do you always have in your bag? Ryo: Breath mints. Mizuki: Mask and tissues. And a train character chewing gum. I loved that gum since I was kid so I always have it. Yuto: Perfume. I’m into scents, and I’ve been into jasmine lately. Soya: Hand wipes. I use it when there isn’t any hand soap when I’m out. Ryuto: A ballpoint ben. It’s the kind with both black and red ink together and it fits into my wallet. 15. What’s your most recent purchase? Ryo: Hawaiian jewelry. I bought something that has “strength” associated with it. Mizuki: A red smartphone case. (Takahashi) Kaito gave me a case that has a built-in battery that I’ve been using, but the color faded… so I went and bought the same color and style! Yuto: Hawaiian ring. Soya: Five rings from Hawaii. My fingers look pretty when I put them on. Ryuto: Mobile battery. 16. What do you want the most right now? Ryo: Motorcycle. I want to ride one during a concert! I have to get a license first, though. Mizuki: I want to try living on my own so I want a one bedroom apartment (laughs). Yuto: White sneakers or boots. I surprisingly like white, even the wristwatch I’m wearing now is white. Soya: A super amazing massage chair for when I’m tense. I never experienced it before, but I want to experience the first class cabin of an airplane. Ryuto: Macro lens for an SLR camera. 17. What type of girls do you like? Ryo: A girl who looks good with short, brown hair. Mizuki: A girl who supports and doesn’t reject my opinions. Yuto: Someone who isn’t clingy, a girl who is a bit of a tomboy. Soya: A bit of a dreamer who says funny, innocent things at times. Ryuto: Someone who talks for me. I don’t hate conversation, but I’m bad at bringing up topics… 18. If you were a girl, which member do you want to go out with? Ryo: None! I know too much about them all so it would be bad (laughs). If it’s any other group, then (Yoshizawa) Shizuya-kun. He’s so nice. Mizuki: Sakuma! Since he wouldn’t be disagreeable with me (laughs). Yuto: None (laughs). But, if Saku-chan was my boyfriend, it would be pleasantly fun. Soya: Hard pass on all (laughs). But if I had to choose someone, the person that fits the answer to the last question the most would be Sakuma. Ryuto: I guess Mizuki-kun. If I were his girlfriend, I’d probably fuss a bit over if he’s sleepy. 19. When do you feel the most happy? Ryo: When I’m talking with my friends at school about how we’re graduating soon. It’s a bit sad though—that only have a little bit of time left together with my classmates. Mizuki: When I hit the snooze button. And, when I eat yummy foods! Yuto: That feeling when I realize that so many different people love me now than ever before. Soya: Shampoo (hair wash) at the beauty salon. Ryuto: When I can relate to a book I’m reading. 20. What’s one thing you want to say to yourself about this past year? Ryo: You’ve grown up a lot! You now like black costumes more than the sparkly ones, you now have an interest in cars and motorcycles, your tone suddenly changed. Mizuki: Blossom. It’s your final year of high school, and it feels like it was spent brilliantly blossoming. Yuto: It was an incredible, spectacular year! Soya: You worked hard! Deserving of praise! Ryuto: You worked hard! You gave everything you had in all the work opportunities given this year.
