TripCase is a free app that helps you organize your trip by making an itinerary for you. The itinerary can include flights, accommodations, rental cars, restaurant reservations, and more. To make an itinerary, you forward travel confirmation emails to TripCase, and the app does the rest. The next time you launch the app or log into the website, a complete chronological lineup of your trip is waiting for you. You can manually add details, too. The result is similar to what you get from TripIt (see below), but the method of collecting the information is different.

Brazilian state of Amapa suffers a power blackout for days (AP) A fire at an electricity substation has caused four days of blackouts in most of northern Brazil’s Amapa state, disrupting the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. The outage began Tuesday night when a fire damaged a transformer, interrupting the power supply to 13 of the state’s 16 municipalities, including the capital Macapa, the state government said. Amapa state, on Brazil’s border with French Guyana, has a total of 850,000 residents. Nearly 90% of Amapa’s population was still without power on Friday morning, according to the state’s communications secretary. Thousands of people lined up to fill water jugs and tanks at places in the capital where supply was still available, according to images shown in local press. Most of the population was without telephone service or internet access.

Minks (National Geographic) Minks, which are raised for their fur around much of the world, are, like several other mammals, able to catch coronaviruses from humans. That’s the bad news. The worse news is that 207 fur farms in Denmark are home to minks that tested positive for the coronavirus. The even worse news is that the nation’s public health authority found that the virus can then circulate between minks and humans, and worse still, the virus has mutated in the minks. Half of the 783 human cases in the north of the country are related to the minks’ mutant coronavirus. That’s extremely bad, as if this strain gets around it may be sufficiently mutated to undermine the efficacy of a future vaccine. In light of this, Denmark will kill every one of the 15 million mink in the country’s 1,200 fur farms as a precautionary step.

France reinforcing its border controls following attacks (AP) French President Emmanuel Macron said on Thursday that France is reinforcing its border controls after a series of attacks that hit the country in recent weeks. Macron said the number of police and troops in charge of border controls will double from 2,400 now to 4,800. They will focus on fighting illegal immigration and smuggling activities, he said, during a visit to a frontier post in Le Perthus, at the border with Spain. In addition, Macron said he will push for changes to make controls at the European Union’s external borders more efficient. “Attacks in France, in Austria a few days ago in Vienna, show us that the terrorist risk is everywhere, that (terrorist) networks are global ... which forces Europe to intensify its response,” he said. France will present its proposals at a European summit in December.

Greece imposes lockdown to avoid worst at hospitals (AP) With a surge in coronavirus cases straining health systems in many European countries, Greece announced a nationwide lockdown Thursday in the hopes of stemming a rising tide of patients before its hospitals come under “unbearable” pressure. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said that he acted before infection rates reached the levels seen in many neighboring countries because, after years of financial crises that have damaged its health system, it couldn’t afford to wait as long to impose restrictions as others had. The lockdown takes effect at daybreak on Saturday across the country and will last until the end of the month. People will only be allowed to leave their homes for work, physical exercise and medical reasons—and only after sending a text message to authorities. Shops will shut, although supermarkets and other food stores will remain open. Restaurants will operate on a delivery-only basis.

Kosovo President Resigns to Fight War Crimes Case in the Netherlands (NYT) The president of Kosovo, a guerrilla leader during Kosovo’s fight for independence against Serbia, resigned on Thursday to face charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity at a special international court in the Netherlands. The president, Hashim Thaci, 52, said at a news conference in Pristina, Kosovo’s capital, that he was stepping down to protect the office of the presidency. The former commander of the Kosovo Liberation Army, Mr. Thaci was indicted in June by the special court in The Hague on 10 counts of war crimes. Prosecutors accused him and other former independence fighters of being “criminally responsible for nearly 100 murders.” A judge at the court also confirmed war crimes charges against Jakup Krasniqi, a former interim president of Kosovo. Prosecutors said Wednesday that he had been arrested with the help of European Union authorities.

Belarus nuclear plant opens (Foreign Policy) The first nuclear plant in Belarus began operations on Thursday amid objections from neighboring Lithuania, whose citizens live within roughly 12 miles of the facility. The plant, built by Russian state company Rosatom, will eventually power a third of Belarus according to a statement from its energy ministry. Lithuania’s complaints about problems with the plant’s construction have been waved off by Russia, who say it meets the highest international standards. Lithuania has offered free potassium iodide tablets—which can protect the thyroid gland from radioactive iodine released during nuclear accidents—to residents near the plant in the event of a nuclear meltdown.

Iraqi forces kill protester, wound 40 in southern Basra (AP) Iraqi security forces killed at least one anti-government protester using live gunfire and wounded at least 40 others in the southern city of Basra on Friday, security sources and a rights official said. It was the first killing of a protester by security forces in Basra since Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi took office in May. Deadly flare-ups have been rare since protests against Iraq’s ruling elite and demanding jobs and services largely subsided earlier this year. During months of anti-government protests that erupted under his predecessor Adel Abdul Mahdi in October 2019, more than 500 people were killed, mostly young unarmed demonstrators.

Israel rebuked for ‘biggest demolition of Palestinian homes in years’ (BBC) The United Nations has rebuked Israel for carrying out what it said was the biggest demolition of Palestinian homes in the occupied West Bank for a decade. Some 73 people, including 41 children, were made homeless when their dwellings were knocked down in the Bedouin settlement of Khirbet Humsa, in the Jordan Valley, the UN said. The Israeli military said the structures had been built illegally. But the UN called the Israeli actions a “grave breach” of international law. According to the UN Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs (Ocha), 76 structures—including homes, animal shelters, toilets and solar panels—were destroyed when Israeli bulldozers moved in late on Tuesday. Footage from the scene following the demolition, released by Israeli human rights group B’Tselem, showed the area strewn with wreckage including twisted metal, sheets and cots. “This is a great injustice,” resident Harb Abu al-Kabash told the Israeli newspaper Haaretz. “We didn’t know they were coming and we didn’t prepare, and now we are facing rain.”

Ethiopia conflict escalates as army sends more troops to Tigray region (Washington Post) Ethiopia’s dispute with the northern Tigray region escalated Thursday with reports of heavy shelling and the army’s deputy chief declaring that the country had entered into “an unexpected war” and was sending more troops to the area. The intensifying conflict drew an urgent international response, with the United Nations dispatching a special envoy to Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, and the International Crisis Group warning that the conflict could spread beyond Ethiopia’s borders. Clashes erupted in Tigray on Wednesday after Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize winner, sent troops into Tigray province and declared a “military confrontation” after the regional government attacked a federal military base.

Guest Post: Local news collaboration in the time of COVID-19

The image is familiar, even mundane, to most of us now: a dozen or more faces peer out against various backgrounds – some real, some green-screened – talking and planning across many miles. Together, apart.

But it was an unprecedented group that first gathered on April 1 – in more ways than one. First, the faces were of journalists from newsrooms from across Colorado, who in previous years have been more accustomed to competition than collaboration. Second, the group was finding unity in a common purpose – how working together could help each of them reach more Coloradans with accurate, timely, potentially life-saving updates and rigorous reporting in the unprecedented time of COVID.

Since that first Zoom call less than a month ago, nearly 100 journalists representing over 40 newsrooms across the state have joined the Colorado News Collaborative – which now includes the state’s largest and smallest newspapers, radio and television stations, digital news outlets, and professional journalism associations. A major factor prompting each to join the COLab, as it’s called, is a common need to figure out how to do more with less.

Why? While online news traffic is surging due to reader demand for trustworthy local news and information, Colorado’s newsrooms themselves are running on fumes.

Some of this isn’t new: With Google and Facebook gobbling up more than 60 percent of local digital ad revenue annually, the number of journalists in Colorado has declined by 44% between 2010 and 2018, and nearly one in five Colorado newspapers has closed its doors since 2004.

Last fall, the Colorado Media Project reported that at least 30 Colorado counties — most of them rural — have been left with only a single source of original local journalism.

Now, with local advertising plummeting to historic lows, the COVID crisis is already further expanding Colorado’s news deserts, reshaping the local news landscape in ways it may never recover.

The formation of the Colorado News Collaborative is a bright spot in these dark days. Participating newsrooms are joining forces to coordinate coverage to avoid duplication and maximize resources; cover more stories about people and communities statewide that are currently going untold; collaborate across newsrooms on data-driven accountability journalism; and facilitate wider distribution of stories, in both English and other languages, in order to better serve the public.

Today and throughout the coming week, in front-page newspaper stories and broadcast features across Colorado, COLab partners are releasing their first major collaborative storytelling project: COVID Diaries Colorado.

On April 16, the deadliest day to date in the U.S. coronavirus pandemic, scores of reporters from across Colorado set out to find how people were coping. They found stories of grit, ingenuity and hope. You can find some of their stories in this publication, and all of them are online at http://colabnews.co.

So now if you’re sufficiently inspired, and wondering: How can we support these dedicated local journalists — among the short list acknowledged as essential workers by Gov. Jared Polis — in this challenging time?

Christmas in San Miguel de Allende

This Christmas we returned to Mexico, but to San Miguel de Allende (SMA, in the mountains several hours northwest of Mexico City. It’s a very attractive town, and the old center has retained its historic nature with old buildings, narrow cobblestone streets and churches.

It is also well known for having good restaurants.

SMA was a mining town, but the mines ran out in the late 1800’s and the town was nearly abandoned. It was discovered by Americans in the early 1900’s, and an art school was established which became popular with soldiers returning after WWII. As often happens, tourists followed the artists and expats followed the tourists. Today it has a large expat community. The result is large neighborhoods of new million dollar homes on the hills above the town and lots of remodeled older homes in town that seem to cost about half that. So while the expat community is less than 20% of the population, financially they are much more significant. As a result it probably feels very comfortable to most Americans who would otherwise be concerned about visiting Mexico.

There are a number of interesting sites in and around town. Our favorite was the Toy Museum which has folk style toys. I’ve always enjoyed seeing the inexpensive toys people make and years ago we would see them in the Christmas markets in Latin America. Today inexpensive plastic toys have taken their place.

The museum’s collection has few old, used toys; most are new, but of types that reflect the historic ones and still hand made from inexpensive materials: wood, clay, bamboo, cloth, straw, etc. Growing up my father made toys for us, so I can really identify with these.

One popular group of toys are models of carnival rides: merry-go-rounds, small ferris wheels, carnival games, puppet shows, etc. I can imagine that for rural children who might get to a town for a traveling carnival once a year, it would be a big event and to have a toy that reflected the experience would be great.

There’s a botanic garden on the hills outside of town. It’s a little rough and it’s mainly cacti. (It’s pretty dry here most of the year.) But it was interesting, and a good walk.

An American artist moved to the area about 20 years ago, and built a compound of house, studio, gallery, and other structures he calls the Gallery of Jimmy Ray and covered everything in mosaics and glass bottles. He offers tours, and it was an interesting visit. (Jimmy Ray was his father.)

The farthest trip was about an hour away to a pre-columbian ruin La Canada de la Vírgen. It was discovered on private land, and while the site itself is now owned by the government, access is through the private property. So it can only be visited on a tour.

It’s not a large site, but it’s interesting and of an intermediate period, after Teotihuacan and before the Aztecs. A number of features of the construction seem closely related to some of the sites around Oaxaca, and the language of some of the locals is related to the Zapotecs in Oaxaca.

While SMA is a pretty city, and certainly walkable (except for those expensive places on the hills above town), it’s not as culturally interesting as Oaxaca. It was never a major local cultural center historically and today the rich, older expats have less cultural interest than one might hope. So the difference between last year in Oaxaca and this in SMA was striking to me.

A great example is the Posadas. These are a Mexican religious tradition honoring the journey of Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem.

On Christmas Eve in Oaxaca, the Posada tradition calls for a group from each church to parade from their church to the town square, around the square, then back to the church. When they arrive at the church it symbolizes the arrival at Bethlehem and they have Christmas Eve service. The parades vary, but always feature children with one girl playing Mary, usually on a float, or the back of a truck. Sometimes the scene is at the manger, sometimes on the journey, sometimes Mary is all in white surrounded by angels as Queen of Heaven. Most parades have a brass band and costumed marchers and may include flowers, fireworks, large puppets and more. They can be quite varied and clearly the participants enjoy doing it.

Here it’s quite different. A Posada happens every night for the week before Christmas and moves from one church to the next each night. The routes and times are published, so we went to see one. It’s a very small affair: a single scene with Mary, Joseph and an angel played by adults on the back of a pickup with a couple of brass horns, and between a few dozen and a hundred marchers in ordinary street clothes, walking quietly. So while it is certainly a very appropriate religious expression of the event, it has less to be of interest to an observer.

There have been a few music events, including a Jazz and Blues concert and a Messiah performance. These seemed more oriented to the expats than the local community, and had no particular local cultural component. This is in comparison to a wide range of music in free public concerts, folk dance and folk arts almost every night somewhere in Oaxaca.

The one interesting Christmas tradition here is the swags over the doorways. There are many of them with a lot of variation in materials and styles. But I don’t remember seeing them so common anywhere else.

There are a quite a few good restaurants in town, but in the upscale ones we visited the food is very international and could be located almost anywhere in the world.

So again SMA is an attractive, walkable town that is very comfortable and easy for Americans, but not enough Mexican culture to keep me interested.

We rented a house on the edge of the historic center, but up a steepish hill giving us good views of the town. It’s a lovely well equipped house on three floors. So between walking up the hill to the house and climbing the stairs we are getting some good exercise. (BTW, the town itself is at over 6,000 elevation.)

What we didn’t realize was that the street in front of the house is one of the major routes into town, on a steep grade and with cobblestone pavement. So the traffic noise is loud and pretty continuous during the day. Inside most rooms it’s not too bad, but the porches and patios are too loud to have a conversation.

Tomorrow we leave for home, back to Chicago winter weather, but for me it’s time to go. I’ve got projects to get done and I’m ready to get back to them.

Hyatt is months away from opening its third flagship hotel in Japan with Park Hyatt Kyoto, which is slated to debut on December 1, 2019. We have the latest construction photos of this nearly-completed resort and commentary about Park Hyatt Kyoto, which promises to be a great use of points.

As regular visitors to Japan and Hyatt enthusiasts, we’re incredibly excited about Park Hyatt Kyoto. As you can read in our Park Hyatt Tokyo Review, our experience there was superlative–one of our best hotel stays ever. This newer property promises a more interesting ‘traditional meets modern’ style and likely will have even better omotenashi, Japan’s renowned hospitality philosophy. Suffice to say, Park Hyatt Kyoto has the realistic potential to be one of the best hotels in the world.

However, Park Hyatt Kyoto is not for everyone. We want to get this out of the way right off the bat. If it’s your first visit to the historic city, staying in a traditional ryokan or restored machiya is arguably a must-do experience. (We cover this in our Where to Stay in Kyoto, Japan guide.) With that said, if you’re using Kyoto as a Kansai home base for 4 or more days, doing a split stay with a couple of nights at Park Hyatt Kyoto could be a very appealing option…

Next, let’s talk location.

Park Hyatt Kyoto has a great location near Kodaiji Temple (below), which is a short and lovely walk from Kiyomizudera Temple in the historic Higashiyama district. We spend more time in this area of Kyoto than anywhere else, and walked past Park Hyatt Kyoto a half-dozen times on our most recent trip to Japan.

This is far and away the most interesting location of any luxury hotel in Kyoto. How Hyatt managed to score this prime piece of real estate is beyond me, but the views of Yasaka Pagoda (below) and the rest of Higashiyama are incredible.

Stepping out of the resort and right up the steps of Ninenzaka will be an incredible experience, immersed in the heart of Kyoto’s historic side.

That’s the upside. The downside is that Park Hyatt Kyoto is not conveniently located to any subway or rail lines, and the buses that service this area are notoriously crowded (to the point that we actively avoid them).

You’re looking at about a 15 minute walk to Gion-Shijo or Higashiyama Stations. It’s a nice walk, but still far from ideal.

In fairness, the target audience for Park Hyatt Kyoto may be more inclined to take a taxi or private car everywhere (we think that’s a mistake if you want to experience the real Kyoto, but that’s another topic for another day).

In any event, it’s a pleasant walk through a nice area and offers access to both the Keihan Line (our favorite rail line in Kyoto) and the Tozai Subway, so at least there’s that.

The last few years have seen a boom in Kyoto hotel properties, with several noteworthy foreign luxury properties opening hotels. The Ritz Carlton Kyoto opened about 5 years ago (and is one of the nicest Ritz Carltons in the world), Starwood’s Suiran Luxury Collection Hotel opened a year later, and Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto followed that another year later.

One month before Park Hyatt Kyoto opens, Aman Kyoto will open on the exact other side of the city, just north of Golden Pavilion. These new high end properties join the likes of older (yet reliable) favorites such as Westin Miyako Kyoto Hotel and Hyatt Regency Kyoto.

Park Hyatt Kyoto will be a boutique hotel, with 70 guest rooms, including nine suites. Standard rooms at Park Hyatt Kyoto are 485 square feet and standard suites are 732 square feet.

Interiors are being designed by renowned hospitality designer Tony Chi. For such a small hotel, the property looks incredibly large–it’ll be interesting to see how the finished product makes use of its space.

Current rates for Park Hyatt Kyoto are over $700/night, with rates during cherry blossom and fall colors seasons, plus other holidays like Golden Week, expected to go for far more. While Kyoto tends to be cheaper than Tokyo on the low end, this is about par for the course with the city’s higher tier hotels.

Park Hyatt Kyoto is a Category 7 World of Hyatt property, which puts a free night at 30,000 points. Accordingly, this will be an excellent use of points. Between this, the limited number of rooms, and high demand during peak seasons, we’d recommend booking Park Hyatt Kyoto early.

Another interesting thing Hyatt is doing that we haven’t seen from other luxury Western brands is partnering with an established, traditional name in the city.

Park Hyatt Kyoto will be located within the grounds of Higashiyama’s famed Kyo-Yamato Restaurant, which used to be part of a sub-temple.

We’ve yet to dine at Kyo-Yamato (京大和), but the family-run location is hundreds of years old and is renowned in Japan for its kyo-ryori kaiseki cuisine.

This gives Park Hyatt Kyoto instant credibility and gravitas, and should help to make it feel less like a modern luxury chain jarringly plopped into this historic area. The seamless look of the hotel’s exterior design should also help with that.

As we’ve noted elsewhere, tourism to Kyoto has surged in the last 5-plus years, and this trend should only continue with the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics expected to provide another boost in numbers.

While it’s great to see more people enjoying Kyoto, which is our favorite city in the world, the downside of this is that it’s caused prices to surge and overcrowding to occur at popular temples.

Of course, with such a low room count, the Park Hyatt Kyoto is going to be an expensive property regardless of tourism trends. The greater tourism trends are a double-edged sword here.

Park Hyatt Kyoto is a stone’s throw from one of the most congested areas of the city, but it’s sufficiently isolated so that shouldn’t be too much of a problem.

Moreover, the streets of the Higashiyama District totally clear out at night and the place becomes a veritable ghost town, even on busy days. One of our favorite things to do in Kyoto is walk this area at sunrise or late in the evenings, it’s absolutely beautiful and serene. This is difficult to do if you’re staying in other areas of the city, but will be perfect for guests staying at Park Hyatt Kyoto.

Additionally, walking north of Park Hyatt Kyoto leads to Philosopher’s Path and a number of hidden gem temples that are perpetually devoid of crowds, even during peak seasons. In case you can’t tell, we’re pretty excited to stay here, and plan to book something for later this year or early next. We’ll report back with a full review once we do!

January Meeting Recap

Hi Downtown and Wooster Square Community,

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend our January DWSCMT meeting! Below are the minutes from the meeting.

A few additional notes to the minutes:

Economic Development Survey: As a part of their presentation, Economic Development and City Plan created a survey about the Development Process. Fill out survey and send back to Economic Development or bring to next meeting to discuss.See survey here.

Point in Time Count: The CT The Point in Time Count (PIT) 2019 is next week - this is the one day of the year that we have an unduplicated count of sheltered and unsheltered individuals and families. This one day count informs how we utilize services and it influences how we request and gain access to much needed resources on the state and federal level. The Greater New Haven area will be completing the PIT Count this year on January 23, 2019 from 4:00am-7:00am. If you are interested in joining us this year please visit the CCEH website and sign up! Speed Sign on Olive Street News: Two “Your Speed Is…” street signs have been approved for intersections at Olive and Green Street, and Chapel and DePalma Court. They will be installed soon. Learn more here.

The Storehouse Project: The Storehouse Project has applied for CBDG funding for their Mobile Food Pantry. The Mobile Food Pantry has a site at Gateway. They are looking for letters of support from individuals. Learn more about the project and how to provide letters of support here.

DWSCMT Summer Movie: It's time for City of New Haven Parks & Recreation to start planning their annual summer movie series! Each of the 12 Management Team areas will have a Friday night showing of a popular movie which will be selected by popular vote in March. The DWSCMT Executive Board would love your input on when and where the Downtown-Wooster Square movie should happen! Fill out the survey here.

General Updates

DWSCMT Meeting Time: The DWSCMT monthly meeting has official been extended from 6 pm to 7:30, with the last half hour for Economic Development updates, and at times, presentations from developers.

Civilian Review Board: The Board of Alders passed a Civilian Review Board ordinance last week. The Management Teams play a role in recommending representatives from the district to serve on the Civilian Review Board — to then be nominated by the Mayor and confirmed by majority vote by the Alders. It’s important to the DWSCMT Executive Board that the process of recommending CRB members is transparent, fair, and representative of the diversity of Downtown and Wooster Square. We are going to be exploring best practices around what this process could look like and would love input from multiple perspectives. More updates to come.

New Haven Police Department

Crime reduction down by double digits in 2018, specifically violent crime

Recent increase in commercial burglaries, Sgt. Maher has been working to investigate but they have since been reduced to zero this week

Green initiative is still ongoing to address quality of life issues – officers on beat 7 days a week

Full time radio car is coming to Wooster Square to address recent property crime issues

Town Green

Night Market in December was a success, looking to do another event in Spring/Summer so it will be held twice a year in the future.

2020 budget planning is currently happening for next year’s events

Flights of Fancy taking place on January 24 – shop, sip, and taste at over two dozen local shops and restaurants

Beginning a window display program for empty storefronts – looking for artists, partners on supplies, property owner sponsors. Contact [email protected]

Grow with Google program Feb. 13, 9 – 4:30: representatives from Google will be holding workshops at the library

Women in Stem programming, youth events, Democracy in Crisis conversation with New Haven Scholars

Yale

Yale is planning a number of events to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day, please check their website for more info.

One event includes: Yale University’s 2019 MLK Commemoration on Wednesday,January 23. With a theme of “Think Globally, Act Locally,” this event will feature community organizers who honor King’s life and legacy through their daily work towards social justice from the intersection of activism, art, faith, and healing. Moderated by Hanifa Nayo Washington (Communications & Participant Engagement Coordinator for Co-Creating Effective & Inclusive Organizations), this dynamic panel discussion will feature: (1) Barbara Fair, social worker and social justice activist; (2) Kerry Ellington, Community & Economic Development Organizer, New Haven Legal Assistance Association; (3) Aaron Jafferis, Founding Artistic Director, The Word New Haven; and (4) Mikveh Warshaw YSN ’17, psychiatric nurse practitioner and founding member of Mending Minyan. The event will be held at Sheffield-Sterling-Strathcona Auditorium (SSS 114), which is located at 1 Prospect Street at the corner of Grove Street. Doors will open at 5:30p.

Yale students have returned to campus

On Wednesday, January 16 the Education Committee will hold a workshop on the school to prison pipeline. We'll hear from experts, NHPS administrators, and stakeholders. 6pm, Alder Chambers of City Hall

Alder Roth

Budget season is coming March 1, there will be a calendar of public hearings and workshops

The state is getting grant money for renovating the Crown and Temple street garages, could affect parking during construction time

Feb 7, 6 pm – there will be a public hearing on Bikeshare before City Services, new bikes are coming that you will not need to use a credit card for

Traffic Safety – there will be a banner placed across the medical center bridge to alert people to stop at red lights to address recent incidents where people are frequently running red lights. Also proposing red light cameras be installed.

Point in Time Count taking place on January 23 from 3-6 am. This program will count the number of people experiencing homelessness, both on the streets and in temporary housing. It will also audit the programs offering shelter. This is a very important event that affects HUD funding. There will be a Youth Point in Time event as well, led by Youth Continuum on January 23 for a week. Register to volunteer here.

Alder Greenberg

On Thursday, January 24 the Affordable Housing Task Force will vote to finalize its report and recommendations. The report and recommendations will be made available to the public in advance of the vote. 6pm, Alder Chambers of City Hall.

Sickle Cell Disease Association of CT

The first community center in the Northeast to open in a month on the corner of Orchard and Chapel

They are currently looking for letters of support in order to obtain grant money for programming at the facility.

Emergency Management — Rick Fontana

New Snow Emergency plan

New communications will be sent during parking bans and snow emergencies, with shorter SMS messages and more concise info

They have new equipment to pre-treat road surfaces (ice-eater instead of brine, more effective and safe for trees/cars).

New focus on treating/shoveling sidewalks, quality assurance

New zone structure for parking bans: Zone A (Downtown), Zone B (Snow Routes), and Zone C (Residential)

For $3 a day, affected residents may park in Temple and Crown street garages, and there will also be designated school parking lots

No odd side parking during parking bans (if even is regularly banned, residents must find another place to park. Example: Lyon Street)

Update from Anstress Farwell: The New Haven Urban Design League held a meeting to discuss a new parking garage design for Union Train Station. An abbreviated report will be coming out soon about what Union Avenue could look like.

Economic Development Presentation – Mike Piscitelli and Aicha Woods

The Economic Development Division has 6 departments

Their goal is to look for a more comprehensive place strategy for Downtown, which acts as both a regional center and neighborhood.

Focused on defining development values and looking for successful development project criteria; the projects relationship with Development has changed in recent years, more private investors are involved now, and the rulebook needs to be re-written and have more clarity over development values

Long Wharf Plan is going before the Board of Alders and City Plan Commission

Olive, Elm, and State Street Corridors- focusing on commercial corridors and zoning regulations that may be out of date (newhavencorridors.com)

Examples: 80 Elm Street Hotel in former Webster Bank building.

Buildings on east side of State Street

170 Olive Street, more mixed-use buildings for this area

Ninth Square Residences will have new owners, with first floor retail and market rate apartments

RFP for community event use at State and Wall parking lot in evenings/on weekends areas

Development deals with both building codes and zoning codes

If it’s a deviation from the standard, project goes to the BZA (Board of Zoning Appeals)

If it’s checking a technical detail, it goes to a Site Plan Review with the City Plan Commission

If the project requires a zoning change, it can go to the Board of Alders

Deviations with special exceptions go to BZA, special permits go to CPC. Exceptions have one set of criteria, where permits are more elevated and often involve design criteria

Public Hearings – some are required and some are requested by Alders. Public Comment by letter is also allowed

The Historic District Commission deals with changes to property in a historic district.

Projects with the city’s direct interest (where city land is involved) go straight to the Board of Alders.
