Matt doesn’t finish his sentence, because he doesn’t know how far he truly could go to protect you. He doesn’t want to, is the right way to put it.

I have a question: What did Atsushi mean in this panel when he said "the fact that you're the one standing in front of me"? I don't get it.

And why Akutagawa's face seem conflicted by hearing that?

I'm not entirely sure - that line is fairly ambiguous - but I can share my own interpretation! Here, Atsushi is trying to explain Akutagawa that the reason why Dazai has not acknowledged him yet is not, as Akutagawa is convinced of, because he isn't strong enough, and that his being powerful is actually of no interest to Dazai. Atsushi suggests that there's something else Dazai is waiting for Akutagawa to grow better at before acknowledging him, and Akutagawa will only be able to see what it is by keeping himself from killing (likely, what Atsushi is thinking Akutagawa lacks is moral virtue to some extent, compassion and humanity. I feel like that's also consistent with how Dazai sees Akutagawa in Beast, and what believes is wrong with him: “It’s human nature to lash out with violence. But if hurting others is your natural instinct… then you are nothing more than a mindless beast” (Dazai, Beast novel, page 18) ).

Akutagawa so far has believed that everything he could do to be seen by Dazai, was proving his own strength; and that his current situation of not being yet recognized was due to his own limits on that front. With that last line, I think Atsushi is telling him: “The reason you are where you are now [both in terms of his path towards being acknowledged by Dazai and overall current status as conjunction of events that led him to be where he is] has nothing to do with your strength or lack thereof. You're here in front of me [in your current situation that led you to this place in this moment] because there's something you've yet to realize [that would be, once again, that strength is not what Dazai seeks in him but rather for Akutagawa to accomplish a moral step up]”.

Additionally, I think Atsushi might also imply: “The reason you're here in front of me, the reason Dazai decided you had to be here, is so that you could see something you still can't grasp”, since both sskk and the bsd author seem to be fairly assured that everything sskk themselves do is because Dazai wanted them to, in some sort of weird determinism (“Why were you so eager to put Akutagawa-kun against that tiger lad? [...] How long have you been aiming for this scenario?” “From the time I met Atsushi-kun.” (Hirotsu, Dazai, chapter 37); “Why do you think Dazai-san put us together?” (Atsushi, chapter 51); “Dazai-san didn't abandon me after all. This was all a trial. A guidepost, lined with wailing.” (Akutagawa, chapter 85); and even more examples could be made; everything sskk do, seems like it's because Dazai wanted them to at some point.)

The reason why Akutagawa looks so conflicted, then, is probably out of bewilderment for Atsushi's words, for the revelation that proving his strength - that is everything Akutagawa has tried to do since meeting him - is actually not the way to make Dazai acknowledge him.

Have drawn an explanation if it helps though! The headcannon came from the actual Baldwin IV of Jerusalem and a pretty scummish knight of his, Raynald de Chatillon (whom he gave a lot of power to, whom Reynauld also got his namesake from as de Chatillon is a very greedy Crusader who plundered and stole)

It carried over to a brainrot I had that Baldwin the Leper had a lot of promise and hope on Reynauld, but first-hand saw how far he fell from grace

Yet the king never stopped believing in him because he knew what a great man Reynauld the Crusader was before he became a total monster

When the events of Darkest Dungeon 1 started and the former king entered the Hamlet, he saw how much Reynauld had changed and was happy, but pretended to not know who the knight was (until Reynauld confronted him because he can't keep it in his heart any longer, that IS his king. His king whom he disappointed, a relic of his past.)

Also the idea of Reynauld being a war commander came from his unique trinkets and his camp skills, "Leader's Resolve" or something. In the comic, he led a whole army of calvary and infantry. Must be quite the commander! ☺️

miguel o'hara had never been big on physical touch. or talking. or purposefully making funny jokes. he actually wasn't a big fan on a lot of things. the only person he really regularly talked to was lyla, but that was only because he had to in order to get things going in the spider society-- but someone he could never find himself pushing away from was you. at first, being completely honest, he'd been so busy with monitoring the whole spider society that he'd neglected to realize that you and lyla were attached at the hip. both of you got along great, both having similar wardrobes and the occasional matching sunglasses. what began with conversations with solely lyla, even after work hours, ended with miguel joining in with the occasional wry joke every now and then. that slowly began to grow more into full fleged conversations with the three of you, and you and miguel had created a bond that seemed to be just about unbreakable.

he isn't big on romance, he likes to think, because he doesn't have the time for it. sometimes miguel says the words "the fate of the multiverse" and you and peter b. look at each other and snort a little, but sometimes you see the the corner of his lips twitch.

the first time miguel o'hara does anything remotely romantic is in battle, when some random universe's doc ock decides that you'd be the perfect victim. you weren't awake for most of it, but lyla tells you that miguel had practically dropped everything to save you, refusing to acknowledge the possibility that you wouldn't make it. he had stayed at the hospital every night to look after you, and every day grew into a week into two weeks before you were discharged, and during that time, both of you talked like there was no tomorrow.

when miguel actually realizes that he's in love and he's not having some sort of allergic reaction, he kind of sneaks in a small, quick question, even leaning against the wall to sound extra casual to lyla, "hey uh what's that new album taylor swift released" and lyla drops everything because . why is this man even asking this question . but it doesn't take long for her to connect the dots, and realizes that he wants to know more about your interests and what you like. lyla tells you, obviously, and fortunately, things progress from there.

once you two are actually together, miguel treasures lazy saturday mornings and cozy friday evenings. he even loves the "i'm so exhausted i might die" monday mornings on his way to the spider society, because he's with you. if you struggle with anxiety, while he might not know the best thing to do at first, he'll talk you through it every step of the way. but he won't ever pity you or see you as something broken, he sees you as someone who's deserving of respect, and most importantly, love.

oh man this guy starts keeping an extra hair tie on his wrist for you, or he literally keeps make up wipes in his storage cabinet (he asked peter b advice on what he keeps on hand for his wife 😭<33), and he definitely thinks it's awesome that you're studying six languages, and he'll also definitely ask you about it !! also he loves holding you while sleeping beacuse if a man is touch starved it's him

Another thing that it seems to me that prompted him to go "No more thinking. Action!" is seeing the mother and her death. She called him a monster. She beat her fists at the door. And then the wolves came. And (unlike Jonathan when the vampire women had circled him again, and he ran and screamed), she stood still, and she didn't scream. She chased the monster who took her child and she met her fate bravely.

It shook Jonathan to his core.

It was the first time he admitted he cried, when he tried to open that door to save the child but couldn't. He MUST find a way (and he did).

That's very true, too. I was mostly thinking that he didn't want to fail anyone else the way he failed her and her baby, but you're right, maybe he also felt stirred and humbled by her bravery, and emboldened by it, like it was a wake-up call to him that he needed to be bolder and braver himself. He's been so terrified there once the danger of his situation became clear, wanting to escape it all, but then he saw someone who was fully aware of the danger from the outset (unlike when he first came... because he ignored all the warnings from everyone lol...) come anyway for the sake of someone else, and not be afraid of death. It probably made him feel so weak and selfish... which is so sad, because we know he's been trying his best; Dracula has specifically been breaking him down slowly, and yet he's still doing so well for himself and been fighting so hard all things considered. :( And it's not like he's only ever been in it for himself, either, because just yesterday he was ready to bravely throw it all away for even the smallest chance at saving the baby, just like the mother did 💔 He didn't get a chance to try, but if he had, if he had been able to save it somehow (however that could have happened) even at the cost of his life, I think he still would have been relieved :'( He's so much braver than he thinks he is. 😭💔
