Frontiers Update 2 is sooo good. It added a ton of content, a lot of physics tweaks, the spin dash and more. Surpassed all my expectations, and I'm very excited for what's to come in Update 3.
Like I said last year, by the end of this year Frontiers is going to be a wildly different game, and for now it's absolutely a better experience.
#sonic the hedgehog#sonic frontiers#and it all costed me the incredible amount of $0#hard to pass this offer after rejecting origins plus#something i really liked about this update is that you can tell sonic team is experimenting#they're taking the base experience and trying all sorts of things#all the new platforming challenges include tons of fresh ideas#and some even require advanced knowledge of the game's controls and physics#they're cooking right in front of our eyes#and ngl it's hard not to be excited for what they'll achieve in the next game if they keep this up

no need to apologize! thanks for asking :)) <3
🎮 VIDEO GAME CONTROLLER — what are three of your oc's favorite hobbies?
For Quinn--he's not really a hobby type of guy, but I suppose his would be working out, chilling with Fig, and sleeping, lol. He's pretty dedicated to his military work, and doesn't prefer to linger in idle moments lest he start spiraling mentally, so most of his recreational pursuits are more for distraction's sake. He's not even a super big gym guy, but he tends to work out as a physical outlet to get out of his own head..
Vincent has more traditional hobbies--cooking, reading, and role-playing games are some of his main ones. He's taken to learning new recipes, especially now he has a human bf to impress, and reading has always been a passion for him; he likes to escape too every once in a while (historical romance, mostly). The ongoing dnd campaign he and Stuart host with their mates is one of his joys as well. I think Vince would be down to try most hobbies, even more as a potential group activity with Quinn (Quinn is not thrilled with this development -_-)
🔶 LARGE ORANGE DIAMOND — does your oc know cpr? do they have any other medical expertise?
Both are sufficiently versed in CPR, Vincent probably moreso. Being in the military requires at least some medical knowledge, so I imagine Quinn would know the basics. Vincent is definitely more proficient, as he has some...intimate experience with certain practices. He's probably brushed up on it further now that he has a fragile mortal to protect.....
🍃 LEAVES FLUTTERING IN WIND — what is/was your oc's favorite subject in school?
Hmm...Quinn was not so big on school, so his favorite subject might've been P.E. Not that he was even particularly athletic, but it felt better being physical and distracting himself from a lot of the shit he was going through at the time. He wasn't bad in math and science early on, but he lost focus for a lot of subjects as he was finishing school. Funnily enough, his dad was a history teacher, yet Quinn never expressed any real interest in the subject to his father's disappointment.
Vincent appreciated most subjects, but he favored English literature and music. He'd always enjoyed books growing up, so he thrived in discussions about classics and modern novels of the time. Music was another pursuit that he excelled at; also helped that he had a crush on his piano teacher. He was relatively well-rounded as a student, though ancient Latin courses always bored the hell out of him
❤️ RED HEART — what are three of your oc's positive traits?
Quinn--he's determined when he needs to be, doesn't complain about arduous and shitty circumstances, and he cares..despite everything
Vincent--he's kind in a world that doesn't often accommodate that sort of courtesy, he's ambitious (and confident to boot), and he has a lot of compassion
💔 BROKEN HEART — what are three of your oc's negative traits?
Quinn--stubborn as shit, doesn't look out for his own well-being, terminally pessimistic
Vincent--also stubborn, can be a bit pompous, gets possessive and jealous in a nasty way
🍝 SPAGHETTI — what is/are your oc's favorite food(s)?
I think I just answered this but I'll elaborate and say Quinn will literally dip anything in peanut butter and eat it; on every sandwich, with every fruit/vegetable, on fish and chips, sausage, corn, eggs,....he's beyond saving 💀
Vincent has also been experimenting with his food intake limit (aka the tummy ache threshold), so he's been able to enjoy some raw meat dishes
😊 SMILING FACE WITH SMILING EYES — what are your oc's career/general life desires? what do they want to get the most out of life?
oh...Quinn doesn't really let himself think about life desires. Sure, he's got his job in the military, but he doesn't see himself rising through the ranks so much as staying put and seeing how much he can get away with off the record. Truthfully, he can't picture himself having a good life at all; it's just not something he's ever considered for himself. Until...Vincent came along...
Vincent's immediate desire is for his vampirism to be cured. It's the main thing holding him back and he hasn't fully embraced his future because of the notion that he's going to 'live forever'. So finding a way to be human again might put him on a track where he can finally pursue goals again...and yeah. most of those desires will revolve around Quinn....

I'm sorry if this has been asked before, but what is the full extent of a Gallifreyan's psychic abilities? I know they have basic telepathy and telekinesis. Could they have “Jedi-like” powers if they really wanted?
On a side note, do the "Powers of Creation" and the Master's lighting/electricity powers count as psychic abilities? If not, what are they?
What's the full extent of a Gallifreyan's psychic powers?
🧠 Gallifreyan Psychic Abilities
Telepathy: Every Gallifreyan possesses these abilities to some extent, though most are low-level telepaths. They can communicate mind-to-mind, especially with other Gallifreyans.
Telepathic Signature Recognition: Each Gallifreyan has a unique psycho-kinetic signature, enabling them to recognise each other even in different bodies.
Psychic Bridge/Entrelacement Formation: They can establish intense telepathic links, known as Psychic Bridges or entrelacement, with other Gallifreyans, transferring large amounts of information and emotions in a short amount of time.
Hypnotism and Memory Manipulation: They can hypnotise others and block, alter, erase, or implant memories. This is enhanced by intense eye contact. So if a Gallifreyan is closing their eyes while reading your mind, they're respecting your boundaries and signalling they're (probably) not trying to rearrange your mind.
Astral Projection: Advanced Gallifreyans can project their minds through the Astral Vortex over vast distances and through time. This form of psychic ability is particularly strong when contacting different incarnations of themselves.
Soul Catching: A way more esoteric ability is to absorb memories from a dying Gallifreyan, preserving their experiences and knowledge, which is useful for plot, I'm sure.
🚫 Limitations and Extended Abilities
No Telekinesis: Typically, Gallifreyans don't possess strong telekinesis as part of their standard psychic skill set, only minor telekinesis for moving tiny objects, such as pieces in board games. However, specific instances demonstrate that under certain conditions, they can manifest proper telekinetic abilities:
Caleera: Caleera, a Time Lord Academy student, had profound psychic abilities that included telekinesis. Her case was so unique that it was 'controlled' via medical intervention.
The Tenth Doctor: The Tenth Doctor showed some telekinetic ability when he channelled the collective psychic energy of Earth.
Jedi-like Powers: While their psychic abilities are pretty darn impressive, it's a stretch to say they could do Jedi powers on the hoof. Gallifreyan telekinesis isn't about lifting starships or blasting you with the Force into a wall. These abilities, while powerful, are exceptional. They require specific circumstances or an inherent level of talent that's not common among Gallifreyans.
✨Powers of Creation and The Master’s Thor-like Thang
Powers of Creation: This is likely not a psychic ability but an advanced manipulation of physics and cosmic laws. It's more about an in-depth understanding of the universe and an ability to manipulate its fundamental aspects rather than anything psionic.
The Master's Abilities: The lightning/electricity powers of the Master likely resulted from his botched regeneration process, where excess artron energy was harnessed as a weapon. This is different from typical psychic powers and more related to a 'whoopsie' in the regeneration process.

Scott Damron A Journey to Mastering the Heights in Rock Climbing
Rock climbing is a sport that requires not just physical strength but also mental resilience, technical skill, and a deep connection with nature. For Scott Damron, a passionate adventurer and climbing expert, rock climbing is not just a hobby—it’s a way of life. With years of experience scaling rock faces across the world, Scott has established himself as one of the most respected names in the climbing community. His journey to mastering the heights serves as both an inspiration and a guide for aspiring climbers.
The Early Days: A Passion Ignited
Scott’s love for rock climbing began at a young age. Growing up in the scenic landscapes of Georgia, United States, he was always drawn to the outdoors. The forests, mountains, and rocky terrains surrounding his home provided the perfect environment for adventure. It wasn’t long before Scott started exploring the rocks in his local area, developing an early interest in climbing.
However, Scott didn’t immediately dive into the world of professional rock climbing. Like many climbers, he started small, using basic gear and learning the ropes through trial and error. It was this grassroots approach that laid the foundation for his future as an expert climber. Scott’s enthusiasm and curiosity led him to learn more about the technical aspects of the sport, pushing him to seek out training and knowledge from seasoned professionals in the climbing community.
Building Expertise: Training, Trials, and Triumphs
As Scott’s skills evolved, so did his desire to challenge himself. He quickly moved from beginner climbs to more advanced routes, tackling difficult rock faces and mastering techniques that would take others years to perfect. But it wasn’t just about conquering peaks—it was about understanding the nuances of climbing, the importance of mental focus, and the ability to analyze and assess risks.
In order to become a true expert, Scott sought out opportunities to train with top-tier climbers and participated in numerous climbing expeditions. His dedication to honing his skills led him to explore some of the most challenging and dangerous rock formations in the world, from the towering cliffs of Yosemite National Park to the craggy peaks of the Alps. Throughout his travels, Scott not only gained valuable experience but also developed a deep respect for the natural world and the elements that shaped these incredible landscapes.
One of Scott’s key philosophies is the importance of continuous learning. Even as an expert, he never stopped seeking knowledge, always looking for ways to improve his technique, increase his strength, and better understand the mental aspects of climbing. For Scott, the journey never ends, and each climb represents an opportunity for growth and self-discovery.
The Mental Game: Focus, Fear, and Overcoming Limits
While physical strength and technique are essential for rock climbing, Scott believes that the mental aspect of the sport is just as important. Climbing is as much about overcoming fear as it is about physical endurance. The higher you climb, the greater the risks, and the more you have to trust yourself and your equipment.
Scott often speaks about the role of fear in climbing, noting that it’s an emotion that every climber must learn to manage. Rather than trying to eliminate fear entirely, Scott teaches that climbers should acknowledge it, respect it, and use it to their advantage. By recognizing fear as a natural response, climbers can better assess situations and make more calculated decisions.
One of Scott’s key mental techniques is visualization. Before each climb, he spends time visualizing the entire process, from start to finish. This mental preparation helps him stay focused, calm, and in control when facing difficult routes. Visualization, paired with positive self-talk, allows Scott to push through challenging moments and overcome self-doubt, enabling him to reach new heights—both literally and figuratively.
The Climbing Community: Teaching and Mentorship
Scott’s journey in rock climbing has not only been about personal achievement but also about giving back to the climbing community. He has always been passionate about mentoring new climbers and helping them reach their potential. Over the years, Scott has taught countless individuals the fundamentals of rock climbing, guiding them through both the physical and mental aspects of the sport.
As a mentor, Scott focuses on building confidence in his students. He understands that rock climbing can be intimidating for beginners, and it’s essential to create a supportive environment where climbers can feel safe and encouraged to push their limits. By breaking down complex techniques into manageable steps, Scott helps climbers gain a strong foundation before tackling more difficult challenges. He emphasizes the importance of patience and persistence, knowing that progress in climbing is often gradual.
In addition to one-on-one training, Scott is also an advocate for rock climbing as a means of personal growth. He believes that climbing fosters a sense of empowerment, resilience, and self-discovery that can carry over into other areas of life. For Scott, rock climbing is not just about scaling walls—it’s about pushing yourself to be the best version of yourself, both on and off the rock face.
Conclusion: A Legacy of Inspiration
Scott Damron’s journey in rock climbing is a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and continuous growth. His story is one of triumph over adversity, a journey that has inspired countless others to take up the sport and challenge themselves in ways they never thought possible. Through his expertise, mentorship, and unwavering dedication to the climbing community, Scott has solidified his legacy as one of the most respected climbers in the world.
For aspiring climbers, Scott’s journey serves as a reminder that the path to success is not always linear. It takes time, dedication, and a willingness to embrace both failure and success. But with the right mindset and determination, anything is possible—just ask Scott Damron, the expert who has reached the top time and time again.

3D Modeling: 3D Modeling and Animation Some, but not all, Unity developers have knowledge on how to integrate 3D models and animations. It would thus be very beneficial if they knew how to work together with designers and artists.
Knowledge of Game Physics: A good Unity developer should know enough simulation of realistic physics to control gravity, character movement, or interaction among objects. This is of paramount importance for lifelike game environments.
Development of Multiplayer Games: If the game you plan will be multiplayer, a Unity developer should know how to implement multiplayer networking frameworks, manage the synchronization among the users, and use server-side logic.
AR/VR Development: In this, you would be searching for developers that have the experience of working with hardware like Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, or Microsoft Hololens. They should know how to integrate those devices and optimize the game for immersive experiences.
Where to Find Unity 3D Developers
There are innumerable platforms and avenues that can help you find qualified Unity 3D developers:
Freelance Platforms: Such websites as Upwork, Freelancer, and Toptal provide highly skilled Unity 3D freelance developers. You may check their portfolios, ratings from previous clients, and experience relevant to the project you need to ensure you hire the right person.
Development Agencies: Specialized firms like AIS Technolabs hire experienced Unity 3D developers and, because of an agency, you will probably receive a team of developers with various skill sets to ensure end-to-end support for your project.
Game Developer Communities: Sometimes Unity Connect, GitHub, and forums with Unity developers can give you the necessary results. You would get an idea about the work of the developer from contributions and project showcases.
LinkedIn: This is another very good place where you can look for Unity developers. Here, you can browse through profiles of different varieties, see all the recommendations, and even post job postings to find the right kind of candidates for the positions at hand.
How to Choose the Best Unity 3D Developer for Your Project
After shortlisting a few, follow the following steps to choose the best Unity 3D developer.
Port Folio: See what they have done before. See if they have worked on games like yours in terms of style and complexity. See if they have maintained uniformity in their quality and a proper understanding of game mechanics.
Assess Their Problem-Solving Skills: Game development oftentimes deals with solving seemingly complex problems, be it performance optimization, bug fixes, or implementing a feature. Ask the developer what kind of challenges they faced in past projects and how they overcame them.
Test Technical Knowledge: You can perform technical interviews for determining their competency with Unity, C#, and any other specific requirements your project might have. Even give them some small task/test to check their coding abilities.
Communication and Collaboration: Game development often involves collaboration between designers, artists, and other people on your team. Ensure that the developer can communicate well with your team.
Talk Through Deadlines and Budget: Your project deadlines and budget should be well discussed with the developer. A good developer should be able to give you a realistic timeline and even a cost estimate based on what you require.

Davigo: A New Innovation in Games
BLOG 9: MR TECHNOLOGY IN GAME MEDIA
Being a huge gamer, I've always been fascinated by the appeal of virtual reality games. I watched videos to learn more about the virtual gaming world even though I don't own a VR headset. I was looking through LinkedIn to see what new and innovative games people had made when I suddenly came across the game Davigo. It is not like any game I've ever played before; instead, it takes VR to a new level by exploring Mixed Reality (MR). Attracted by its singularity, I decided to learn more about it, trying to dissect the fundamental technologies that make up Davigo using Academic frameworks.
About Davigo
Within the ever-evolving gaming industry, Davigo stands as a ground-breaking example of how cutting-edge technology and limitless creativity can coexist. In contrast to traditional virtual reality games, Davigo goes beyond the boundaries of virtual reality, engrossing players in an immersive Mixed Reality (MR) setting.
The concept of the game is elegantly simple yet ingeniously innovative. Davigo stages an epic brawl between a formidable giant and a valiant knight. The twist lies in the dynamic interaction between the two players. The VR user becomes the colossal giant, tasked with capturing the knight and obstructing their ascent up intricate structures. Simultaneously, the knight, controlled by a PC player, navigates a vast map, aiming to conquer the giant through strategic maneuvers and well-timed attacks. This asymmetrical gameplay creates a riveting experience where the virtual and physical worlds seamlessly intertwine.
This innovative gaming experience is the result of the creative work of Davigo Studios, a young game development company. Davigo Studios, a newcomer to the industry, stands out for their level of inventiveness and creativity. Davigo serves as a promising introduction to the unique perspectives and inventive approaches Davigo Studios brings to the world of gaming.
youtube
Academic Standpoint
A study published by Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) suggests that: The concept of Mixed Reality (MR) emerged in academia as a result of the combination of Augmented Reality (AR) and full immersion. An MR experience is thought to result from the ability to seamlessly combine both augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) within the same application or device. But scholarly disagreements and uncertainties have been raised by the theoretical understanding of MR. (Speicher et al., 2019)
Some have claimed that MR and AR are interchangeable, while others have struggled to articulate the concept's theoretical underpinnings. Three requirements have been determined by scientists to be combined in order for a piece of media to be classified as an MR experience: (Speicher et al., 2019)
Inclusion of VR or Not: MR experiences can either include Virtual Reality or not, allowing for a spectrum that encompasses both immersive and augmented elements. This versatility adds layers to the user experience, providing a dynamic interplay between the virtual and real worlds. (Speicher et al., 2019)
Advanced Understanding of Physical Environment: The capacity of MR to provide a sophisticated understanding of the physical world is one of its most important features. This knowledge could be closely connected to particular hardware, resulting in a complex interplay between virtual and physical components. (Speicher et al., 2019)
MR as a Distinct Term from AR: MR, according to some academics, is a novel idea where virtuality and reality are seamlessly blended rather than just a different name for augmented reality. According to this viewpoint, virtual components coexist in real-time, space, and digital mediums, resulting in a blended experience that defies conventional definitions of augmented reality. (Speicher et al., 2019)
Theorizing Game according to Academic Standpoint
According to observations made by the study's interview subjects, Davigo is not considered to be within the purview of Mixed Reality (MR) when analyzed from an academic perspective. On the other hand, a more thorough investigation uncovers intriguing details that may allude to an unusual connection with MR.
According to scientific perspectives, AR elements are deemed essential to meet the criteria for Mixed Reality. Here lies the first departure from the conventional understanding, as Davigo lacks explicit AR elements. Yet, it intricately aligns with the first condition of MR, allowing players to engage with the game with or without VR hardware on their PC or laptop devices.
The game satisfies the requirement for either VR or not, but it does not meet the requirements for either being synonymous with AR or having a sophisticated understanding of the real world. This disparity forces a closer look at Davigo's special qualities.
Logical explanation for this game being a Mixed Reality experience could be that it is a Mix of Virtual Reality and Alternate Reality. Making it ether a MR game or a whole new genre of game in itself. It cannot be just called a VR game as there is implementation of other computer game technologies too and that too half of the game depends on those mechanics too.
A rational explanation emerges, indicating that Davigo would be better characterized as an amalgam of Alternate Reality and Virtual Reality. This combination defies traditional classifications, establishing Davigo as either a unique MR game or a whole new genre. Because it uses a variety of computer game technologies and has important gameplay mechanics that depend on these, it defies easy categorization as a VR game.

Conclusion
As we theorize about Davigo, we find ourselves at the intersection of genres, challenging traditional frameworks and opening up discussions about the evolving nature of immersive gaming experiences. Davigo, with its distinctive blend of Virtual and Alternate Reality elements, beckons us to reconsider and expand our conceptualization of gaming genres and their theoretical underpinnings.

long metaverse post time
The metaverse is more or less set in stone at this point due to advancements in tech, but while suckerberg is trying real hard to be the first one through the gate even going as far as to re-name his corp after it, there's still a chance that his attempt fails and in lieu of that potential outcome we have something to consider.
I think we need to consider what exactly a corporate meta-verse would likely look like in comparison to an open source and corpo resistant meta-verse and how we might fight against the corporate monopolization of the digital side of vr infrastructure (given the resources required to produce the physical components we aren't in much of a position to control that at the moment but the digital side is another story completely). We have a lot to learn from our failure to do the same with the standard internet (specifically the clear net {the publicly accessible portion of the internet}) and many of those lessons are applicable here as well and could even be brought full circle to help undo some of the corporate takeover of the clear net.
The two most common methods of interaction with the internet are through search engines and social media sites. In the clear net both of these functionalities have been virtually monopolized by large corporations, both because the profit they stand to gain from the massive number of users interacting with these services as well as the ability to filter out content that is unprofitable for them and direct users toward more profitable content and interactions. This happens more than you can probably even imagine. Try going to google and searching a word or phrase that should have millions or more hits then checking the results found count
Then scroll down and click to the last page till no more pages load and check again.
The difference between these numbers is caused by results that do exist but which are virtually inaccessible to the average user, logged and indexed by the search engine but left un-displayed because they don't generate profit for google.
We don't really have any hope of preventing Google or Facebook or any other large digitized corporation, from integrating themselves with every VR system they can get their hands on but what we can do is fight them on a ground that even on the clear net they have never actually managed to get a solid foothold in (despite much time and effort spent) and that is the protocols and code infrastructure backbone of how all the digital systems interact with each other.
How these protocols are developed has a large impact on the ability of users to self-organize rather than having to go through corporate systems. By making these protocols as open, accessible, and friendly to new developers as possible we can enable people to create their own systems that challenge the existing corporate structures because when it takes a large amount of effort to create even the simplest search engines due to all the interactions that must be handled by the code many of which require different protocols that require very specific knowledge to use and keep up to date Is it really a surprise that only large corporations with lots of resources are the only ones that can maintain a system reliant upon those?
By developing these protocols in a more accessible way it primes the creation of services by people who actually care about how those services function rather than just how much profit can be generated and makes it easier for them to get over one of the larger early to mid game hurdles of creating a digital service.
Cooperatively owned social media sites and platforms are gaining traction but have a massive uphill battle to fight corporations are trying very hard to develop their own new cross/between site integration protocols such as all those little social media widgets that let you share something directly from an unrelated site to your media feed. They can't take over the true backbone such as things like HTTP (at least not yet) but they are fighting for control of the connective tissue.
Virtual reality; however, is just in its infancy. Those protocols have not yet been written for it and who writes them and for what purpose can change the shape of the battlefield to be more favorable to smaller developers and enable working class projects to be scalable with less effort, potentially even allowing them to out-compete some capitalist platforms in terms of user engagement because without the motive for profit they stand to be more user aligned and that's something that people notice and like, what they don't like is that these sites seem small and unconnected and that is what good protocols can change.
Some of the knowledge generated through the creation of these protocols can be taken and reappropriated for the creation of new clear net protocols as well, although most likely in a more limited way to help prevent further corporate development of inter-site connections by creating them first. And considering the clear net and the other sections of the internet will all likely interface with the meta-verse extensively there will be protocols there in need of implementation as well presenting a ton of untapped potential.
The Internet used to be a self-organized space. The metal verse can be as well and if we build it with intention we may be able to prevent its deterioration and even ensure its resilience in the face of centralization. Imagine using a search engine maintained by a cooperative worker-owned business model that won't hide search results like corporate search engines do and logging into a legitimately user-oriented social media platform that doesn't just try to algorithmically increase angry interactions to keep the ad revenue coming. Imagine video and music streaming services where the artists and creators actually get a decent cut of the revenue.
Some of these platforms already exist. For example; resonate co-op is a music streaming cooperative looking to compete with Spotify, there are multiple worker owned and operated YouTube competitors such as Means TV, and some work is even being done to create co-op social media sites but starting out is the hardest part especially given how much suppression of information about these platforms is happening and the difficulty of integrating them with other sites in such a way that they actually attract users. They need every advantage that they can get and VR is a new frontier where we can create the advantages ourselves before the lines on the map haven't even been drawn yet.
We need this.

E-Sports
Occasionally, you can read about a game adding or already having “e-sports features“ like tournaments or spectator mode, or about trying to “bootstrap an e-sports scene“ by hosting a tournament with a five- or low-six-figure dollar amount prize pool.
This is not how it works. You can’t turn any game into an e-sport by paying people to play it, or by adding features that enable players to run their own tournaments. E-sports are computer games as competitive spectator sports.
For this to work, you need:
Full-time competitive players
A large audience of passive viewers
A media industry/tournament circuit with sponsors, commentators, broadcasting channels, hosting and monetising professional matches
You cannot have #3 without the first two. You cannot have full-time professional players without #2 and #3. It all feeds into the other pieces.
Maybe, if you cannot afford to have a tournament circuit and full-time pro gamers, you can instead have something similar on a smaller scale:
A high-level hobbyist competitive scene
A small, but committed crowd of enthusiasts keeping the game alive
Enough interest for the enthusiasts to fund an annual tournament
The small-scale model seems to be how speed running and the fighting game community operate. The large-scale model is how StarCraft used to work, and how League of Legends, CS:GO and Overwatch work today.
Professional Competitive High-Level Play
E-sports depends on world-class players who can make a living playing your game at a world-class level. They are called “professional gamers”. They train for the game as their day job, probably with some cardio, gymnastics, and hand-eye coordination exercise mixed in. They have sponsors and trainers, which I will cover more in depth in point #3. For there to even be world-class players, the game has to reward high skill.
A competitive scene needs a a balanced, but competitive game. A competitive game with has skill measurement and a high skill ceiling.
E-sports pro gamers are playing the same game as regular players, but they are very good at it, so good that they dominate matches against average players, and even matches against good players. That’s what makes them world-class. If you could spectate just any game on the ladder, the e-sports scene would nor be special. If the outcomes of a match are heavily influenced by randomness, there can’t be a big difference between world-class players and people who just picked up the game. If the game provides high skill measurement at low levels, but runs into ceiling effects at high levels, for example if pro players frequently play a perfect game of computer golf, or a perfect game of computer bowling, there is no skill measurement at high levels, and high-level matches become boring.
An e-sports scene can only exist when the game is balanced for high-level play and has a long skill chain. I the game is discovered to have boring solutions, it must be patched.
How can you determine who is a “world-class“ player after the game launches? How can you be sure the pro-gamers are really world-class if they only play against other pro gamers? How do players ascend from competitive hobbyist to pro? An e-sports game needs a lively hobbyist competitive scene. Good matchmaking and a public ladder allow professional players to practice against random high-level players, hobbyist players to measure their skill against pro players, and everybody everywhere to know where the metagame is at. After all, what good is skill measurement if you never measure yourself?
An e-sports game needs a ranked ladder and good matchmaking.
The pro gamers will probably spend a significant amount of time each week training, sparring against team mates, practising specific moves, techniques, or strategies. This requires custom matches (ranked ladder matches are still good for raising team brand recognition on twitch though, in addition to getting a feel for the metagame). I heard that during the heyday of StarCraft II, some teams spent hours practising defence against cheese like 6-pool Zerg rush, a bunker rush, or a Zealot/Stalker all-in.
Of course, if you practice defence against bunker rushes for days only for bunkers to be nerfed on the day of a tournament, it’s all moot.
There must be a way for competitive players to practice in custom games against colleagues. Patches affecting balance or tournament play must be small and announced well in advance.
The Passive Watching Experience
The audience cares about the game, knows what’s going on and who is winning, and loosely follows the metagame and the goings-on in the e-sports scene, but not necessarily all the beef and player transfers.
The simplest, but not easiest, way to a large audience for an e-sport is to have a large player base. People who occasionally play the game at a hobbyist level are already familiar with the mechanics, and a little emotionally invested in the outcome of games. Even in some real-life spectator sports (like football), you expect almost all people in your audience to have played the game at some point in the past.
A large hobbyist player base also feeds into the smaller pool of more competitive players, and thus ultimately into the pro gamer scene.
All this is presupposing that the e-sport still resembles the game as most players know it. If the high-level matches look completely different from hobbyist ones, if different skills are important, and if it is difficult to know for a hobbyist player what is going on and who is winning, it is much more difficult to parley a hobbyist player base into an e-sports audience. In some Nintendo party games, like Mario Kart and Smash Bros, (but not Mario Party, which is only casual and does not have a competitive scene) most players are playing only very casually against friends, and in others, most players are only playing in single-player mode. They don’t care about winning or getting good at the game, so they are less likely to care about e-sports.
For a large player base, the game has to be easy to pick up, easy to understand, and still fun and competitive at the entry level. Being easy to pick up and understand also makes e-sports games easier to watch and understand passively.
Having multiple games modes can be a nice compromise, allowing casual players to play in a low-skill game mode while competitive players have a higher skill ceiling. This works best if the cards, units, weapons, or whatever your game has, and all mechanics and physics still follow the same rules, and only a few elements are swapped out. Playing with the same rules but different starting configuration and goal state is better than playing “easy mode” with a completely different balance. Casual observers can follow and appreciate e-sports matches if they know what’s going on. By changing the win condition, starting state, and introducing a couple of new mechanics, new game modes can mostly maintain the game mechanics while shifting the dynamics of a match. Keeping the dynamics but making the moment-to-moment gameplay less predictable for the casual observer is much more confusing.
For the viewers who are not playing the game at all, e-sports broadcasters must explain what’s going on, who is winning, and what the current metagame is.
In some games, the metagame is more important than in others. Card games like Hearthstone are difficult to understand for viewers who are not up-to-date on the metagame, even though the mechanics are easily explained, and the card-specific rules are written on the cards. Without knowledge about the current metagame (which decks are dominating the ladder, whether aggro, control, or combo decks rule, what kinds of tech cards/adjustments players can add to react to small shifts in the metagame) it is nearly impossible to make sense of what is happening. That is true even when the viewers see all the cards and know both decks in advance. Specifically, it is difficult to understand why a player is playing fast or slow, greedy or safe, defensive or aggressive, and also who is winning. The same goes for Magic - The Gathering. It’s nigh impossible to understand how a matchup between two decks works without knowing what other cards could be in there, but aren’t. This can ruin the experience for people who know the rules but play the game only very casually.
Other games may have clearer indicators of who is winning and what is going on, but even fighting games with health bars, RTS games with supply counters, and MOBA games with lanes whose battle lines you can see on the minimap won’t let you tell who is winning based on one factor alone. Such a game would be boring! In every competitive game, there should be a way to sacrifice hit points for better positioning (e.g. in Smash Bros or Virtua Fighter), or to fall back on a lane in exchange for gold, so there is never a “simple” metric to see who is winning. If there were such a metric, the first player who gains a small advantage by that metric would just snowball out of control and dominate the match.
In any case, passive spectators benefit from additional visual feedback, because while the players know which buttons were pressed, the audience does not. Passive watchers have much less information than active players. In the first-person view, it can be enough to just indicate whether something failed or succeeded, hit or missed. A fighting game player knows which button he pressed, and his opponent knows whether he blocked correctly or not. Nonetheless, the game should also communicate visually which type of action the players chose for the benefit of the audience.
Visual spectacle and clear legibility are sometimes at odds with each other, but visual spectacle can make watching a game more “fun“.
Having too clear an indication of who is winning can be a detriment, too. It’s good to have clear visual feedback, but not to have limited gameplay options. If the future trajectory of a match is set in stone as soon as one player establishes a clear lead, the game is no longer fun to watch from that point onwards. In games with perfect information, or with enough information, the losing player might simply resign instead of drawing out the match to its bitter conclusion, but in some games with fog of war, one player might be oblivious of his disadvantage, or he might go on and on looking for “outs“ while the audience already knows how everything will eventually play out.
This is just one way in which games can be boring to watch at higher levels of skill, even if the audience understands what is going on. There needs to be a certain flow of action, to keep viewers engaged and entertained. The game should get going without a long set-up phase, and should wind down without a drawn-out endgame. To keep viewers involved at all times, decisions throughout every phase of the match should influence the outcome.
Comebacks, reversals, pivoting to different strategies, risky plays with big pay-offs are all ways to introduce drama into the watching experience.
Fighting games are harder to read for the audience moment-to-moment, the matches are shorter, they can end abruptly, and they are difficult to get into. All this means they don’t make for as fun a watching experience compared to MOBAs, RTS games, or objective-based modes in first-person shooters.
Digression: Let’s Play and Variety Streaming
E-sports is not the only way to broadcast games for entertainment. Your YouTubers and variety streamers can make a living on games, but they don’t have to be world-class. People don’t watch them because they are good at the game, or sometimes not at all because of the game, but because of the streamer’s personality, the community, and the funny commentary. Playing the right game is a way for small twitch streamers to gain new viewers, but it’s not what keeps people around. Some streamers mainly stream the same single-player game every time, and are so good at it they have a streak of hundreds of games in hard mode. Even they retain their viewers because of their personality, not because they are the best at the game.
Of course, a variety streamer or Youtuber can also play competitive games like Chess, PUBG, or Rainbow Six: Siege. It’s played a different format though: Viewers see what the streamer sees, and a face-cam, and if the streamer is eliminated from a round of PUBG or Fall Guys, the streamer often does not spectate the rest of the round for the viewers find out who wins.
YouTubers of average gaming skill can even play tournaments of casual but competitive (in the sense that you play against each other) games against other YouTubers, or organise tournaments in more casual goofy games like Ultimate Chicken Horse, Duck Game, Mount Your Friends, Golf with Friends, or Rock of Ages and still draw in viewers. This is a common method of cross-promotion.
Variety streamers also play party games like Quiplash, Cards Against Humanity, or Mario Party as a backdrop for conversation with other streamers.
They sometimes play competitive games in a team with other streamers, but the necessity of coordinating within the squad in League of Legends, PUBG or CS:GO means more airtime will be dedicated to the actual game, and banter will suddenly have to make way for tactics.
Events and Broadcasting
E-sports events have legitimacy, teams, sponsors, brand recognition that draws an audience, and commentators.
E-sports broadcasters usually call the commentators their “talent“, not the players. The players or “athletes“ come and go, and they get sponsor money from elsewhere, but the commentators and moderators are hired by the broadcaster/event organiser. The commentators are usually both entertaining personalities and knowledgeable about the game. They fill dead air with background info about he players and their recent matches, explain what’s going on, crack jokes, or just do play-by-play commentary. Viewers are often more attached to commentators than to players. There are usually two commentators and a dedicated off-screen observer controlling the spectator camera, in addition to a referee spectating the game, and the players. Additional moderators and interviewers may be on the stage during an e-sports event. Sometimes experts (retired pro gamers) are brought in to analyse a replay in the pause between matches, like in real sports.
While variety streamers play both the role of “entertainer“ and player, this is split up between players and the commentators/moderators, so players can focus on winning and commentators can focus on filling dead air.
By “legitimacy” I mean this: Players in tournaments are supposed to the best of the best, and the organiser’s brand guarantees that viewers won’t see any old boring game, but a pro game with high stakes. If there is a random member of the public in the pool, you know he played his way through some preliminary rounds. I could host a LAN party, throw a Kernel Panic tournament, and declare the winner the 2021 world champion, but I would not have any legitimacy in the eyes of the player base. Large prize pools, a structured and well-regulated tournament, big-name players, and a blessing from the developers can bestow legitimacy.
Getting players, sponsors, broadcasters and an audience into a room takes a lot of money. E-sports sponsors are usually manufacturers or brands of higher-priced gaming hardware, like Alienware, Razer and ASUS ROG, or snack foods and energy drinks. The products are either used by the pro gamers, thematically connected to the game in some way, or used by the audience. Snack foods go well with watching e-sports, but less well with playing. You wouldn’t want to eat a packet of crisps and move your hands back and forth between the crisps and the keyboard and mouse...
With so much money invested and riding on the success of e-sports events, there is a lot of incentive to diversify and look for the next big thing, but also
Takeaway
When you read news about a developer or publisher “establishing a game as an e-sport“, it often means throwing money at a tournament and getting sponsors on board.
When you read about a developer “adding e-sports features“, it often means a ladder, tournaments, or spectator mode.
Of all the prerequisites established above, the most important to establish a game as an e-sport are:
balance
skill measurement/high skill ceiling
easy to learn
interesting to watch
fun to watch
A game like Fall Guys is popular and “fun to watch“, but not particularly interesting, the drama only works if you follow a single player all the way to the last round, not if you watch the action from high up. Fall Guys has a lot of randomness and a low skill ceiling.
Amazon once even hosted a casual game tournament in which variety streamers played mobile games against each other. The goal of that event was to sell their Fire (Android) tablets. This did not kick-start a competitive mobile gaming scene.
There were rumours of EA trying to “establish“ Star Wars: Battlefront II as an e-sport, by funding a large tournament, but the game was neither interesting nor fun to watch.
It is a fool’s errand to “add e-sports“ to a game, instead of trying to make a good game first, or at least one that is fun to watch.

New Characters!
Emir “Kidd” Farooq
Age 23
A young man with a high spiritual sensitivity, who comes from a family of traditional occultists and capacity for honing his own spiritual prowess inwardly, though the honing the process of channeling his outward is the subject of his tutelage under Issea.
Coming from a line of traditional Exorcists and Spiritual Advisors, you would be surprised to hear that his family thought that he would have nothing to do with the trade. For the longest time, Emir held no interest in keeping up with his brother as head of the family business.
It wasn’t until Issea, a random man with little connection to their world, shielded and aided the young Emir during an exorcism gone awry in a small town with techniques he’d never seen before. It kindled a new fire in the young man to learn under the Tactician, from which he would come to hone new destructive forces over a variety of missions in the following years, including his claim to fame; a common ability but used by Emir with great efficiency, his ‘Spirit Gun’ and its variations.
Hence, his title and status as a sharpshooter, Emir the Kidd.
Kidd, in return for all of the guidance, with the intention of helping to save the people of his doomed world, centers around missions that will exceedingly push him deeper into the Ethereal Realms. Trips that, could potentially require him to be gone for extended periods of time, which Issea himself cannot do.
Leia “Moon” Mahina
Age 25
An alchemist and a regular visitor to the Valemede Family in seeking the council of Issea, as a friend to the Mahina House. She's a capable tactician in her own right, but often comes to challenge Issea to some manner of sparring, though ends up tossing around Kidd instead, while Issea is left to coach the both of them.
In reality, a lot of their games are a front, as much of Leia's family are tied to much of the underground resistance efforts against a malicious organization of elites and is typically the one doing recon and middle manning for Issea. If nothing else, she acts as a solid second-in-command to her mentor due to her capability to keep up with and even surpass him in moment-to-moment deliberation.
This is mostly due to an advanced technique passed down from the Mahina Family, as one of its 4 secret weapons. This ability is called Memory Partition where the user is able to partition their thoughts to form multiple independent thought processes. While normal people can only have a single "room" in their brain and focus on one thought, partitioning adds partitions to the one room to create multiple rooms.
Her abilities are typically on higher end of her family, especially with consistent aid from Issea, but magic is not her forté and she relies on her agile speed and hand to hand, ranged and multi-purpose physical weaponry mixed with on-the-fly applications of alchemy. Leia also utilizes the deadly wire projected by her own spiritual energy, made easily malleable, retractable and can either react with physical and spiritual forces. Funnily enough, despite Kidd’s moniker, Leia is the one with efficient weapons knowledge.
Leia’s codename “Moon” comes in part from the alchemic significance of it and in practicality for team formations on missions dealt by the family. Significant elements are managed by one user or another when on team missions, with her frequently handling Silver. In keeping with that, QuickSilver, for which the moon represents, is a dissolving force that blurs and adapts. It often brings home particular words of Issea’s teachings:
“… Let go of yourself, so that you may decide and adapt, in any moment, with any notice, who to be.”
From time to time, she may accompany Kidd on his missions and vice-versa but as her exposure to spiritual planes continues, her capacity for Ki Control will also strengthen, which enhances things like her gunplay, reaction & strength.
She’s also cousin to Lana Mahina, but they’ve never had a real interaction.

[Commissioned by @echo-of-carcosa for their gaslight fantasy game. In their game, Haspergrin here is the arch-enemy of Kasadeya, whom they also commissioned. The commission info mentioned plagues and destroying cities--current events led me to take the flavor text in the direction of ecofascism.]
Great Old One, Haspergrin CR 28 CE Outsider (native) This towering humanoid appears as a scarecrow made by a madman. Its head is vaguely beak-like, a cape of shredded leather and feathers hangs off of its back, and its legs appear to be composed of yokes and horse collars. It clutches a massive scythe in one hand, and its other arm is oversized and tipped with blade-like claws.

Haspergrin, the Rotting Reave, is the Great Old One associated with the destruction of cities and the collapse of industrial societies. His cult is obscure in worlds without access to technology, but to advanced civilizations he is a bogeyman first class. His ultimate goal is to see all settlements wiped away, and for humanoids to live once more in small, scattered and terrified groups, no longer able to impose their will on the world. As such, his dogma appeals to many druids, who find themselves growing more corrupted and hateful even if they began with good intentions. His cult often recruits from the ranks of the oppressed underclasses in cities, encouraging them to tear down the foundations of lives without proposing any alternative but violence and chaos. He delights in deaths intended to “save the planet”, and his followers spread disease as a form of “population control”.
Haspergrin’s very presence snuffs out all artificial light sources, and as such he prefers to make himself known at night or underground. Before making his grand entrance, he will often use mythic contagion to spread a disease for miles around, weakening resistance and shattering morale before he even strikes. Those that see him find their higher brain functions stripped away, collapsing into a primal, animal state. His battle tactics involve destroying weapons and armor with his mighty scythe, and spreading diseases as widely as possible with his great claw. He will often allow some of his foes to survive his onslaughts, to serve as a reminder of his wrath and to die slowly of contagion.
Haspergrin has stalked humanity for millennia. He was originally a sahkil tormentor, devoted to the fear of the dark. But as humans built cities, developed artificial lighting, and banished night from their lives, Haspergrin grew ever more hateful. How exactly he transcended the ranks of the sahkils is somewhat mysterious, but his faithful hold that his current form emerged from the body of his old one as an imago emerges from its cocoon. Sages suspect that this transformation was permitted under the aegis of one of the Elder Gods, such as Sheol Nugganoth or Nyarlathotep. The current sahkil tormentors see him as an enemy, especially Kasadeya, whose concerns often focus on high society. Haspergrin can still summon sahkils, who obey him out of respect for his former status and fear of the fate that awaits them if they disobey.

He is immune to bleed, necromancy effects, poison, sleep effects, stunning, exhaustion and fatigue, and nonlethal damage. He is immune to any spell or effect that requires a Fortitude save unless it also affects constructs. Dreams of Darkness (Su) Haspergrin can use his nightmare spell-like ability on any creature that has ever taken 10 or more points of ability damage or drain from a disease, or anyone who has ever been injured while in total darkness. In addition to the effect of the nightmare, creatures so affected must succeed a DC 36 Will save or be plagued by shadowy hallucinations. Such creatures are permanently shaken, and suffer a 20% miss chance when making all attack rolls. Creatures that cannot see are immune to this effect. This is a mind-influencing curse effect, and the save DC is Charisma based. Great Claw (Ex) Haspergrin’s great claw is always treated as a primary natural attack, even when he makes weapon attacks. It deals 1.5x Haspergrin’s Strength modifier as bonus damage. Haspergrin can also wield a scythe in one hand without penalty. Immortality (Ex) When Haspergrin is slain, his body disappears, leaving behind only his scythe. The first creature that picks up his scythe must succeed a DC 36 Will save or be compelled to build Haspergrin a new body, which takes 1 week of work before it animates and Haspergrin lives again. If this save is succeeded, or nobody touches the scythe, it fades away after 1 day. In this case, Haspergrin cannot manifest a physical body until one is built for him by a cultist or dupe. Neverlight Aura (Su) All artificial light sources cast no illumination within 1 mile of Haspergrin. Any spell with the light descriptor cast in this aura must overcome Haspergrin’s spell resistance to function. Plague (Su) A creature struck by Haspergrin’s great claw must succeed a DC 41 Fortitude save or succumb to one of the diseases that can be afflicted by the contagion spell. There is no onset for this disease, and the save DC for this disease becomes DC 41. Any creature that touches a creature affected by Haspergrin’s plague must save or be infected with the same disease, although the onset time and save DC are as normal for that disease. The save DC is Constitution based. Summon Sahkils (Sp) Once per day as a swift action, Haspergrin may summon one or more sahkils equal to a CR 20 encounter. They serve him faithfully for 1 hour or until slain. This is the equivalent of a 9th level spell. Unspeakable Aura (Su) Creatures that succumb to Haspergrin’s unspeakable aura are feebleminded, as per the spell. The save DC is Charisma based.
