For the writing prompt, let's go with ruin.
request: alexandria silver-blood + "ruins" (elder scrolls writing prompts — OPEN)
summary: Alexandria's teaching methods may not be conventional nor are they always pleasant, but Lucien can't deny their effectiveness.
tags: fluff, lucien flavius, canon-typical violence, alex and lucien are still pretty new as companions so he's still Baby, lexi is an arguably good teacher, not proofread bc it turned out so long lol
warnings: none
word count: 2.3k
ao3 link: [tough love]
author's notes: for those that don't know, lucien is a modded follower who starts as a wimpy little imperial scholar and you train him to get better at combat. this was SO much fun to write, i feel like it really shows some of my fav things about lexi and her dynamic with lucien! thank u so much for the request dearie <3
The door to the old nordic tomb was jammed after what must have been centuries without being opened, but with a heavy shove, Alexandria was able to force them to give. As soon as they swung open, the smell of decay and rot overwhelmed Lucien's senses, and he found himself struggling to hold down that morning's breakfast.
Alexandria, on the other hand, had no such qualms. Instead, she took a deep breath and smiled at the smell. "Ah, I love these old tombs. You can just feel Lady Namira's influence in the air. Makes the eyes water though, doesn't it? Or maybe that's just the dust." She fanned her face, letting her eyes dry out for a moment before readying her sword in one hand and a simple Firebolt spell in the other. "You ready?"
"Uhh," Lucien hesitated. "Do I have a choice?"
"Nope!" With that, she pushed him through the doors, and he nearly toppled over. "You'll be taking the lead this time, alright?"
"What?! Me?!" He sputtered. "Are you sure that's a good idea? No, don't answer that. It isn't a good idea whatsoever."
Alexandria didn't seem to share a single one of his concerns as she placed a hand on his back and pushed him deeper into the old ruins. "It's a chance to practice sneaking and to test out that Turn Undead spell. Two birds with one stone, as they say."
"I only learned that spell last night. Who's to say it'll even work? Don't you think the stakes are a little too high?"
"Of course they are," she said in her usual, all too cheery tone of voice. "You're not going to learn anything by staying firmly in your comfort zone. Besides, don't you trust me to keep you safe?"
It was certainly a good question. In spite of how she presented herself, Alexandria was a difficult person to read. While he often did appreciate her optimistic attitude (it was certainly an improvement over the glum nature of most of Skyrim's citizens), there were more than a few moments where it almost felt like she enjoyed tormenting him. This wouldn't be the first time she pushed him beyond his limits; ever since she started training him, she seemed to make a game of torturing him and justifying it with reasons such as, "You need to learn to take a hit," or "You've got to get out of your own head." And, well... he wanted to trust her methods, but she make it quite difficult.
"If you take any longer to answer, it's going to hurt my feelings, you know."
"N-no, I don't mean to imply anything bad!" Lucien sputtered. "I'm just nervous, is all. You've been a wonderful guard and I don't mean to offend you in any—"
His ramblings were interrupted by her bursting into laughter, and the sound echoed throughout the chamber. He felt a brief panic, but it seems the sound didn't reverberate far enough into the ruins to alarm any draugr. Alexi, it seems, didn't share his worries at all.
"Calm down, will you? I was joking!" She chuckled. "Believe me, no one understands anxiety better than I do. But that doesn't mean I'll allow you to let it control your life."
Lucien had a hard time believing she of all people, in all her confidence and self-assuredness, could relate, but her words were a comfort nonetheless. "Right," he replied, letting her words sink in. He took a deep breath to calm himself, then firmly regretted it as the stench of death filled his lungs.
Alexi chuckled again at him and patted his arm. "You'll get used to it."
"I really don't want to," he said, but readied his spells nonetheless.
*
The pair made their way through the old ruin, crouched low and sticking to the shadows, just as Alexandria taught him. The muffle spell she cast helped them stay quiet and made it easy to make out the sound of draugr footsteps farther into the depths of the tomb.
Lucien stopped in the middle of the hallway they were crouched in and leaned his head around the bend, leading into a larger chasm. Two draugr patrolled the area, moving in circles around the perimeter.
Alexi leaned back on her haunches and whispered, "So, what's the plan, boss?"
It was strange, the way their roles were swapped. "Uhm," Lucien thought back to what Alexandria did the last time they were in this kind of situation. "Wait until they wander to opposite sides of the room, out of each other's sight, and shoot them down one at a time."
"Okay," Alexandria said simply, but the minimal response was enough to send Lucien doubting himself.
"Is that not a good plan?" He asked, unsure.
"Huh? I never said that. I told you, you're the boss here! I'm just following your lead."
"Right," Lucien muttered. "Right. Uh, I just... need to be more sure of myself."
Alexi didn't respond beyond glancing around the corner, watching the draugr.
"Right?" Lucien asked.
This time, she simply chuckled. "Dearie, how are you not realizing the irony? You're still asking for my approval. It's a good plan. Now go ahead before you start getting in your head again."
Unfortunately, his doubts already took root and refused to budge. Even as he drew his bow and had it aimed at the target, he found himself frozen in place.
After the second opening he missed due to his own hesitation, Alexandria leaned over his shoulder and whispered, "Can I give you some advice?"
"Please do."
"Great!"
She grabbed him by the neck not unlike one would grab a housecat, dragged him up from where he was crouched, and tossed him into the open chamber with the two draugr. As he yelped in surprise, the two draugr turned at the sound and drew their weapons.
The rational response was for Lucien to be angry at her for being so cruel, but in the moment, it was all he could do to bash his bow against the draugr that rushed at him with a greatsword. The attack staggered the enemy and interrupted her mid-swing, giving Lucien enough time to switch out his longbow for a sword and spell.
Just as the zombie had regained balance, Lucien took a swing, putting all his might behind it. It wasn't enough to bring her down, but as the sword connected with her shoulder, the two-handed sword she carried fell from her grasp. He used the chance to shoot a Firebolt spell at her, which sent her flying backwards, unmoving.
Before he could celebrate his victory, an arrow whooshed past his face, just barely grazing his skin and taking a few of his hairs with it. It would've sent his heart racing if the poor muscle wasn't already working at full capacity.
He turned his head to the archer, who already had nocked another arrow and shot it in his direction. He just barely managed to dodge by side stepping behind a column. There was no way he could rush at the archer with his sword, and he was clearly outmatched with a bow. Should he just try to pelt it with Firebolts, or—
Suddenly, he remembered the new spell he'd just learned the night before. It was a risk trying it now of all times, but the adrenaline rushing in his veins made it difficult to rationalize it too much. He charged the spell, then ducked out from behind the other side of the column and cast it before the draugr could even release the arrow it had readied.
The second the spell hit, the draugr immediately pulled its arrow back and turned it's back, running in the opposite direction in the signature awkward steps that all draugr take. Now that the threat of being pelted with arrows was gone, Lucien rushed at the creature and grabbed it by the back of its thin, wiry hair. He stabbed his sword through its back with enough force that it jutted out of its chest. When the creature stopped moving, he released his grip on it and let its limp body fall to the ground.
It took him several seconds to catch his breath. When his heart rate finally returned to normal, a high-pitched squeal broke through the calmness and spiked it once again. Thankfully, he realized quickly enough, it was only Alexandria excitedly cheering for him.
"Good job, Lucien!" She applauded, rushing towards him from where she watched. "Oh, I knew you could handle it!"
"I... I did! Didn't I?" It was still hard to believe he could manage in a battle with her support, so to win two-against-one was inconceivable to him.
"Obviously," she laughed, giving him a playful shove. "See what you can do when you stop freaking out? When you don't have time to doubt yourself, your real skill shows."
He couldn't help but join her in the laughter as the reality of his accomplishment dawned on him. "Does this mean I'm now a proper adventurer? I never thought I had it in me!" He puffed out his chest proudly, beaming at his companion.
"I'm well aware of that. That's always been your biggest problem," she said. "Lucien, you've gotten so used to thinking of yourself as some weak little milk-drinker that no matter how much I trained you, you refused to recognize your own progress. I needed to do something to get it through your head."
"Not to imply that I'm not grateful, because I truly am," he replied, "but was throwing me to the draugr really the only thing you could think of?"
She gave a shrug. "It's how I was taught. Well, for me it was sabre cats. And fire. Oh, and also flowers, but that one's less exciting. And plenty of harsh lessons, really. How do you think I got these scars?" To prove her point, she lifted up both arms, showcasing a large array of scars, burns, and calluses that she'd acquired over the years. They moved down throughout her body, displayed for all to see under her Forsworn armor. The injuries had accumulated so much that it was hard to tell one from the other, let alone deduce what had caused them.
Lucien was curious about it since the day they'd met, but it felt rude to ask. But seeing as she brought up the matter herself, and she didn't seem to have any discomfort talking about it, he found himself asking, "What actually happened?"
"Oh, what didn't happen?" She chuckled. Pointing at the rough shape of a bite mark on her right arm, she explained, "I got this one when Auntie Ursula wanted me to get sabre cat teeth because I'd used up her entire supply when making potions. She wanted to teach me a lesson about recognizing alchemy as more than just mixing things together. Respecting the ingredients the land blesses us with, and honoring the Hunt as a crucial part of the life of an alchemist."
She then pointed to the burn marks along her palms and fingers. "I got these when Mother Helle was training me in Destruction magic. A lot of mages hesitate to progress their knowledge of the arcane arts, so she often pushed us to lean into the pain rather than fear it. Learning advanced fire-based spells results in plenty of injuries, but I couldn't have learned them if I didn't stop being scared of getting burned. After getting lit on fire a few times, it stops being so scary. And, more importantly, you learn to control it better."
"What about the flowers?" he asked.
She held up her fingers and wiggled them a bit. They were rough and calloused, and the state of them made him wonder how she could even comfortably hold a weapon. "These were the first scars I ever got. When I first started working as Auntie Bothela's assistant—I think it was shortly after my tenth winter, she made me dethorn every single flower that was in stock at the store until my hands bled. Then she made me use those same flowers to make a health potion to cure the cuts, and then I'd start over. I wasn't so good at it in the beginning, so my skin didn't end up healing very well. But once most of the skin was scarred, it stops hurting, and it helps when working with more advanced recipes."
"That sounds... quite harsh," Lucien observed. It was odd how she described such unpleasant experiences with a bright smile, as though they were treasured memories.
"All my teachers were Reachfolk, and usually followers of Lord Hircine," she explained. "It's part of his teachings—to suffer is to learn and all that. It's not exactly the nicest way to teach, but I always found it... kind, in its own way. They were with me through every step of the way. There was never a moment of my training that I felt alone or lost."
Then, her voice grew softer, a kind of uncertainty he hadn't seen in her before. "I hope I've been that kind of teacher to you. It may not always be easy, but I wouldn't put you in any situation that I don't trust you to handle, even if you may not always trust yourself as much. And, well... I know you're still making up your mind, but I do consider you a friend. I want the best for you."
The confession made Lucien's heart swell, and he wondered how on Nirn he ever doubted her intentions. And, after today, he couldn't doubt her results. "You have been," he said. "I'm glad to have you by my side, friend."
Her eyes lit up at his words, and the sight was reminiscent of that of an excited puppy. "Me too!" she said, her voice back to its cheery tone.
With that, Lucien drew his sword again and gestured to the path leading deeper into the ruins. "So, are you ready to press on?"
She gave a salute and followed his lead, drawing her own sword. "Sure thing, boss!"

Long-ish Unus Annus Goodbye Post Ahead:
Hi I’m Robyn, and here are some of my thoughts on Unus Annus.
This year was (and still is)... a bit rough. I haven’t been teaching for more than five years, and nothing at college could have ever prepared me for the mess that was this last school year and this current school year. One day I was working with my students and the next day I was alone at an empty school campus teaching from my classroom. This year has been super stressful for me as a teacher, and on top of that I’m also attending grad school, so I’m more stretched out than ever on time.
I’ll be honest—I actually forgot about Unus Annus a few weeks after Mark and Ethan launched the channel. The school year always gets crazy, so it wasn’t at the forefront of my mind when they started. It wasn’t until the pandemic hit that everything slowed down for a few weeks, and I remembered about the channel. Cue me holing up in my empty classroom and catching up on videos while writing lesson plans and grading lol. It was one of the things that kept my emotions at bay while transitioning through the school year, and I can’t thank Mark and Ethan enough for still continuing with vids even though it probably wasn’t the most convenient thing for them to do.
How am I going to feel when all this ends? I think I’ll be okay. I live in the LA area, and I was super fascinated by all the small businesses that Mark and Ethan were showcasing so I made some notes to check them out after quarantine ends. It’s a nice thing to look back on for sure, and I can’t wait to spend some of my weekends revisiting memories. Unus Annus has inspired me to make the most of what I have and to grow more creatively. I haven’t created a lot of things for a long amount of time and tbh I’ve really missed it. The Unus Annus community inspired me to create edits and art in my very small amount of spare time that I’ve got—simply because I want to make the most of the time I’ve got. It’s been quite the wild ride, and I honestly think that, for me, this was the perfect year for Unus Annus to happen. I’ve been thinking about the end a lot, and I’m glad and honored to have been along for the ride.
So thank you, @markiplier and @crankgameplays and you in the community who’s reading this, for an amazing year.

Final Evaluation
The title of my FMP ( Final Major Project ) is Conflict.
When you think of conflict you automatically think of violence, so I had some ideas on that, but I didn’t want to create something based on violence. All I imagined at the time is that I would have to research on wars, and battles and see gruesome pictures, so I had to think of other ideas. To help myself I looked up the definition and images of conflict online. Once I knew the meaning of conflict, I could think of many more ideas, that I didn’t even know had anything to do with conflict. Two of my ideas I really liked, Family Conflict and Emotional Conflict. I decided to base my FMP on the sub theme family conflict. All the research, sketches and ideas I created for a month derived from that theme. When I had to scrap the family conflict idea, I moved onto my second favourite idea, emotional conflict.
I had two limitations that I could recognise in my project, time and skill set. I did not have the time to I needed to get all my work completed on time. I also did not have the skill – set to carry out my idea exactly how I wanted it.
My artist research on ChiNoMiko was vital to my project, especially my final outcome. ChiNoMiko is an artist I have liked ever since I played her first game when I was fourteen. Looking at her illustrations for her artist study, I was going to add her art book cover images to her section of the sketchbook, when I realised I would like to try something like that. This caused me to have a lot of ideas in my head, so when I started on my backup plan I decided to turn them into posters. This led me to also look at other game genre posters for design research. ChiNoMiko’s artist research also helped support my sketches and line art for the posters. ChiNoMiko’s characters are created for love games, so her character’s line art is always dainty and fine/thin. By studying her line art I began to think and experiment with different pens, the amount of pressure I apply to the pens and the angle I hold them, to get different line widths. The purpose of this experimentation was to help me decide how the line art should be for all my posters.
For this project, I was tasked to find twelve artists to research. These artists had to either give inspiration for my project or work in the interactive media and digital arts field that I will be studying next year. Though all the artists I researched, art I like and interests me. When I originally wanted to explore and incorporate pop art into my project, a lot of the artists I started to research created art in that field, from these artists I started researching and experimenting. Though in the end I decided not to create my project in the pop art style, as I still don’t quite know enough about pop art, understand it, or even know how to intergrate it into my project. For the other artist’s I explored a website called Art Station, which is a site where games, film, media and entertainment artists across the globe can showcase their portfolios and apply for jobs. I chose artists who are illustrators because I could relate their art to my FMP, and artists who are animators, concept artists, game designers, environment artists, and 3D and 2D artists, because I will be studying these skills next year.
My work is a mix between traditional and digital media. I used paper, tracing paper, pencil, masking tape, repro blue pencil, and one medium and fine markers, to create my sketches and line art. I used an Apple Mac computer, Wacom tablet and Photoshop to create my experimentations and some of my final outcome. Recording the process and research of my FMP in a sketchbook and on my Tumblr blog.
My work has three functions:
1. To aquire me the grade I need to study the interactive media and creative arts course next year.
2. To show the skills, knowledge and improvements, I gained from the digital arts course.
I hope that my audience feel they can relate to my work. That they find interest in in my work. I want for the emotions I was trying to convey in each of my outcome posters, to be recognized by an audience.
If I had more time on the project I would have finished my family conflict animation for my outcome. I had several episode ideas, so hopefully I would have been able to create several of them. I would also have had 2 sketchbooks to record all my work on the project, since I prefer sketchbooks over blogs. This would have also allowed me to record more research and experimentation. I would also have liked to be able to make my sketchbooks more artsy. Have the writing in the sketchbooks all in different colours, and add borders of different, colourful designs.
I am both pleased and disappointed with my final outcome. I am pleased with the idea, but disappointed with the execution. I need to take drawing lessons as I have trouble drawing the human form. This problem had caused me trouble while drawing the characters poses, that I wasn’t even able to finish one of my poster ideas. Hopefully taking drawing classes will also help me draw faster. I am happy with the background in my stress poster, and although I think the lines of the furniture in my anger poster are a bit wobbly, I am still pleased with the posters background too.
My project does not meet my proposal aims. When I wrote my project proposal I intended for my final outcome to be a short animation based on the theme family conflict. But due to complications I was unable to complete the animation and had to go with my backup plan for my final outcome. This I had mentioned in my project proposal as an idea, to digitise my character designs for the theme emotional conflict. Though I also changed this somewhat, as I took the character designs I had and turned them into game posters for the theme.
Throughout the project my work had been evaluated by my teachers. This helped as during the disscusions they would tell me whether my ideas were achievabel or not, and input there own ideas to.
This in a way has been both a success for me and a disaster. I am not completely happy with my work or the time it took to complete it, but this experience has taught me a lot. I need to plan better, so I can get my work done when it needs to be done, in the order it needs to be done. I would say I should also start coming up with ideas realistically on what I’m able to do, instead of what I want to do. However I know this is impossible for me, so instead I should strive to learn and master, the skills I need to be able to successfully execute my ideas.

HighSchool!Momo
Requested: anon asked: hello!!! may i have twice momo x reader where they’re both dancers? i really love your writing!!
Pairing: Twice Hirai Momo x Gender Neutral Reader
Warnings: none
Thank you for requesting for our girl Momo. I recommend watching her Hit the Stage performance to Crazy in Love, because I can’t describe things for the life of me. Also, I do have a vague knowledge on the South Korean schooling system, because I knew it was really different from school in England so hopefully it’s at least a little accurate.
School really isn’t as bad as the movies make it seem
Well, at least your school isn’t
Yes, there are cliques, but there isn’t really a social hierarchy as a lot of western movies portray
And so you quite like school
You are friendly with your whole class, as well as those in others
Your best friends, Jeongyeon and Sana, are the greatest
You’re grades are the best they have been (all thanks to Jeongyeon getting on your back about homework)
And best of all, you were appointed the captain of the dance team
Out of all the other boys and girls in the club, you were picked
And that feels pretty great
So here you are, sitting in your desk, first day back after winter break, the teacher having just started the first lesson
When the door opens and in walks in the principle, and behind her a (really pretty actually) girl, shyly smiling at the class
“Students, pay attention”
Any eyes that hadn’t already turn to the front, and the principal nods before leaving, the girl standing still in her spot
“Hello, I am Hirai Momo, transferring from Japan. I hope you take care of me”
You and your peers around you warmly smile and say hellos back as she takes a seat a few rows behind you, but cease talking as the teacher starts up again
Sadly, you don’t get to speak to her that day, as she is surrounded by people constantly
However, Sana does get to speak to her, sitting next to her in class, and she is especially excited to have another Japanese girl to talk to
Apparently the two have become fast friends during that first day, and over kakaotalk that night you and Jeongyeon hear all about how nice she is
So the three of you agree to ask her to join you and your friends from other years for lunch the next day
Which Sana does
And so the first time you properly meet Momo one on one is lunchtime the next day
And she soon turns into someone you can see becoming good friends with
Especially when she mentions that she dances
You are quite to invite her to the dance team tryouts you are holding that evening after school, having been looking for some new members
And of course she agrees
And that is the next time you are able to properly speak to her
In she walks to the room, an almost demure confidence to her that suggests that she knows what she is doing
You greet her with a big smile that she is quick to return
Soon enough it is her turn to dance
And as TVXQ’s Mirotic starts playing (for some reason I really want to see her dance this)
Your eyes widen slightly
Because while you are a talented dancer
In a club full of other talented dancers
Momo just completely makes the song her own
So of course, you welcome her onto the team
After the tryouts are finished, and you have given out any information/announcements you say goodbye to everyone
As Momo picks up her bag and goes to leave, you call out for her to wait up before quickly catching up to her
“Welcome to the dance team. I can wait to see what you can do,” you say to her as you come up to walk beside her
Momo smiles proudly “Thank you. I’ve been taking lessona since I was three”
That starts of a conversation about her life in Japan that carries on, even out of the school gates as you offer to walk her home
And this becomes a tradition between the two of you
Everyday after school, or dance when you have it, you’ll say bye to Sana and Jeongyeon who live the opposite way to you and Momo, walking home together
Somedays are full of talk and laughter
Others a comfortable silence
And trips to convenience stores are not uncommon either
Over the next few weeks she really intergrates herself, her korean improving at a rapid rate and your group of three becoming four
Momo also becomes a vital part of the dance team, and a beloved member
She is just so naturally charming
Especially her adorable sneezes
And when the dance showcase comes up and you need to start practicing for it
Both you and your dance teacher decide to give one of the solos to your newest member
And so with a lot of your free time spent dancing together, feelings get caught
Yes. Momo has a crush on
How could she not come to fancy you?
You’re cute, you dance, you have been so welcoming and lovely to her
But she decides to not tell you
At least, not yet
Instead she confides in Sana
But she isn’t exactly discreet with her crush
And soon enough everyone in dance knows about it
Then your class
Then the school
And it is like something out of a drama
The pretty transfer student and the popular team captain
Dahyun, your underclassman, even comes up with a ship name for you two
And everybody feels sympathy for Momo
Because even though she is not even trying to hide it
Complimenting you constantly, shooting literal heart eyes your way, feeding you at lunchtime
You remain clueless
Or so everybody thinks
Because you actually caught on to Momo’s crush on you quite early
But you decided to keep quiet, not yet sure if you felt anything other than platonically for her
So you kept quiet, finding everybodies frustation at your ‘cluelessness’ hilarious
Sometimes you would even initiate extra skinship; back hugging Momo or wiping crumbs off of her cheek
But you weren’t playing around with her feelings
Because one day when you are saying goodbye after walking her home
You find yourself looking at her lips, thinking how nice it would be to kiss her
And that is when you realise that your feelings towards her are definitely not simply platonic
But instead of telling her, even though you know she would accept them without a doubt
You decide to give the k-drama like situation the confession that it deserves
Which of course calls for being as dramatic and unexpected as possible
And the time soon comes for you to do exactly that
It’s the night of the showcase and it is all going amazingly
The crowd, full of peers, parents and faculty alike are loving it
You do a mixture of covers, original choreographies, solo and group stages
And Momo’s dance to Crazy in love is a hit
You catch Momo’s gaze during the performance, and it is so dangerous, it gets your heart beating twice as fast (haha Twice)
She dances amazing, and you couldn’t be more proud of her
Before you know it, it is sadly the end of the show
But you are feeling more nervous than you were at the start of the show, but you make sure to hide them well
Soon you are standing on the stage with the rest of the crew, holding hands and bowing to the audience
You and Momo just happen to be center stage, which is perfect for your plan
Because as you all stand up from bowing
You pull Momo to face you
And you kiss her
On the lips
In front of everyone
As you pull away from her you are grinning at her pleasantly shocked face, cheeks blushing a pretty red
You hear the people around you and in the audience wolf whistling and cheering
And you are pretty sure you hear Dahyun shout out “the ship has sailed!”
But you couldn’t care less about all the attention you are getting, because you and Momo are too busy smiling at each other
You ask Momo out properly when most of the other people have left
And now the afterschool convenience store trips are counted as mini dates
In fact, food dates are kinda your thing, because Momo loves her food
So you introduce her to your favourite local spots, and in return she makes her Mum make you her favourite Japanese dishes
You two also dance together a lot, and you are each others own hype man, encouraging each other through all the hard choreographies
You also love to learn kpop dances together and you always own any random dances that your dance club decide to do for fun
Jeongyeon is still the one you both go for academic help though, with you often turning up on her doorstep together for study sessions
Speaking of Jeongyeon, her and Sana love you both dearly, but if you keep acting so sickeningly sweet around them they’re throwing hands
Momo loves calling you things in japanese, but always refuses to tell you what they mean
But you find out from Sana that she calls you everything from “sweetie” and “baby” to “turnip” and “frog legs”
You ‘accidentally’ buy the extra spicy ramen for her after you find out she calls you frog legs
After that first kiss in front of everyone, the most pda you do is hugging, because Momo loves to surprise you with random backhugs
Basically, you are one th cutest couples that your school has ever seen

I would like to learn more about...
Pairing: None. Kurt-centric slice of life. Probably not Rachel friendly, I just see it as being her but others might see it as more unfriendly.
Rachel hovered over Kurt as he filled out the class schedule for his first semester at NYADA. He’d already been placed in the dance class and vocal class and workshop time, he now needed to flesh out the rest of the semester with classes that he could take that weren’t the second half of topics and didn’t require a class as a prerequisite.
“I’ll have to take First year Drama and script analysis over the summer. Madame Tibideaux said if I went both summer sessions I could take those classes and the rest of first year voice and dance. I can only take a max 10 credits during summer sessions, and that is that right there. I could get in speech and maybe the math general requirement now though. With Modern Musical Theater and that Exploration of Dramatic arts course I would have a good start. That would probably be about max credit wise anyway.”
“You aren’t going home to Lima in the summer?” Rachel asked quietly.
“No, I have to catch up so I can be on course by next year. My college fund is not unlimited. And at NYADA all it is going to cover is tuition.”
“But Kurt…”
“Sorry, Rachel. It wouldn’t hurt you to stay here. You could find a job and see if you could get permission to audition.”
Rachel scoffed. “I already plan to audition whenever something I might want comes up. I told Madame Tibideaux that as well. She can’t actually stop me.”
Kurt rolled his eyes. “Did you ever consider the recommendation for no auditioning until you are given the go ahead might be there for a reason?” Kurt asked.
“And I know the reason. It is so that they have less competition. Rumor has it most the teachers at NYADA do at least one professional show a year. They just keep the students down so they don’t outshine the teachers.” Rachel said and Kurt could tell she was serious.
“Anyway,” Kurt continued, interrupting what he knew would end up a huge rant if he let Rachel get into it. ”I need to go in and test my musical theory foundation and piano skills for placement in those classes, but those are each just one credit a piece. But taking the classes will have to wait till fall. Then in fall I can take English Comp and World History. That is six credits and a good chunk of my generals out of the way. Hmm…so let’s see…Dance is four credits, vocal and workshop is four credits...and six more. That is fourteen, plus musical theory and piano…so 16. Hmm, if I add projection, which is one credit and History of Theater in America, which is three, I’ll still be under 21, which is the max without getting all sorts of permissions and such.”
“But, we won’t share any classes.” Rachel said.
“Aren’t you taking the English class?” Kurt asked.
Rachel snorted. “I need to focus, Kurt. My dads came with me and helped set up my first year schedule. I have dance, vocal class and workshop, a private lesson, and first year acting with emphasis on musical theater. WE think 12 credits are enough and will allow my focus to be properly pointed to where I can show the most star power. They advised sticking as close to that as possible for the next year as well.”
“What about script analysis and your generals and oh…the rest?”
Rachel rolled her eyes. “Attention won’t be focused on me in those classes, Kurt. And if I can’t keep the focus I won’t get the roles I deserve. I need to be seen. I am certain I’ll be able to get them covered without having to actually take them.”
“And here I thought the purpose of NYADA was to learn all about musical theater and become better prepared for a career in the industry.” Kurt said.
“By being seen at what you shine at.” Rachel answered.
Kurt snorted and went about filling out a schedule in which what he wanted to take didn’t overlap.
Rachel grumbled and muttered under her breath about letting her set his schedule up, but he plugged along and got his classes set up like he wanted. He briefly wondered what she was going to do when she wasn’t let into certain classes next year due to prerequisites not being taken.
Rachel forgot her complaints about his schedule by the time they started classes anyway, except when he wasn’t home to fix her food when she wanted him to.
She whined about him taking summer courses again when it was close to summer. She had wanted him to follow her to the theater while they started putting together Fanny so he could do all her running for her, like make her coffee or feed her lines when she forgot them.
“Sorry,” Kurt told her the third time she demanded he not take the summer courses. “Not only do I have my NYADA courses but I managed to get into a class recommended at Vogue.com. I’m taking a photography course being offered by one of the photographers who does the regular magazine photos. It is an opportunity of a lifetime.”
“Why?”
“Because I was offered the chance when I asked her why she made a choice she made while setting up one of the shoots that showcased the summer scarves we had a small write up on. Thea had a spot open in this class and told me she’d love me to fill it since I was asking questions that had substance.”
Rachel looked at him as if he were speaking a different language. “I mean why would you take a photography class? That has nothing to do with starring on Broadway. What a waste of time! If I were you, I’d use the time you spend there doing something useful…like auditioning.” Rachel said with a sneer.
“I already told you, I will wait to audition until I have something to put down on paper and have more classes under my belt.”
“You’re going to wait for permission aren’t you?”
“Probably,” Kurt replied. “Anyway, Photography is fascinating. I have such a great deal of respect for most of the photographers who I’ve met and this is simply the opportunity of a lifetime. She even set up a photography basics course for me to take before I go to her classes. I can’t wait. I mean, I don’t know if I’ll ever use it professionally, but if I can create with it for my own enjoyment and also learn what makes a great photo for different purposes for use with vogue.com it will be worth every moment.”
Rachel was of course fine with Kurt taking photos when they ended up being able to be used for her portfolio.
Blaine didn’t get into New York until three days before NYADA started back up again…Sam in tow, so Kurt didn’t have to hear ‘why are you taking’ whatever it was that seemed silly for him to take to whoever was complaining (as Santana joined in for Fall semester complaining) from Blaine at least. This was good because Rachel and Santana were annoying and loud enough to keep Kurt on edge. He was already stressed because he was having to rearrange what he’d tried to put in before…but his yr. two vocals class and intermediate dance class interfered with his previous set up. Rachel had wanted him to just drop what he’d had to pull out of all together but instead he just switched courses. He’d tested out of musical theory thankfully, because it was one that didn’t fit any longer, and he’d managed to keep projection and history of theater, but Eng. comp and world history were moved to online courses which had a full year to finish and so didn’t count into his credit count and his piano course had had to be postponed. On Santana’s and Rachel’s list to complain about were the screenwriting class, choral for chorus, world literature and sight singing. Rachel also tossed fits over the online courses…because they took away time from Kurt following her off to Callbacks and watching her sing and cheering her on. Or rather watching her and Blaine sing and cheering them on, since Blaine was ‘allowed’ to sing with Rachel and while he was out with Rachel, whereas Kurt was just supposed to sit and cheer for her. Kurt loved having online homework to do as an excuse to stay home personally…a year of just sitting and waiting for her to ‘allow’ him to play as well was enough.
“Look,” Kurt finally snapped. “After world lit, I have five more general courses to take. I might plan on being a star someday, but sight reading music and being part of a chorus are just good skills to be able to bring to the game. And honestly, you two…how can you scoff at screenwriting? To make your own script? The power of writing, of being the creator of a whole show? How can you not see the appeal?”
“But Kurt, those classes will take away from your voice courses and dance and acting classes! Where is your focus and pin pointed passion!” Rachel yelled.
Kurt rolled his eyes. “The same place it has been since I got here. NYADA is a place to learn all about the theater profession…not just singing. The more I know, the more I have to bring to the table when I go out to audition. Those credits listed on a CV matter, Rachel. The more I participate throughout the school, in a variety of areas, the more professionals in the school I meet and hopefully the more letters of recommendation I can bring with me. Not everyone gets handed their dream role right off the bat like you did. The rest of us will have to fight our way into a role.”
“I had to fight for my role, Kurt.” Rachel snarled.
“No, you really didn’t Rachel.” Kurt said. “Talk to other people who have gone to open call auditions. You got lucky and went to auditions on an appointment system because your casting director for the show had been suffering from migraines and decided a traditional open call wouldn’t be an option. Did you think that was normal? How auditions are generally held here?”
Rachel shrugged. “I didn’t think about it. Why would I?”
Kurt rolled his eyes.
“I have no idea why you might think about how things are generally done in the profession you are going into.” Kurt sneered.
“Besides, I’m going to be famous now and they will always have me audition privately and first for any role I want from now on.” Rachel added…completely seriously.
Kurt finalized his schedule and resisted the urge to slam his head against the wall…or strangle Rachel.
Unfortunately, Blaine was around to join in the complaints when Kurt signed up for his Spring Semester classes for his second year. Blaine complained about Mime and Movement the most, although he complained about the Kurt taking such a full load to begin with. Rachel complained about Stage Combat. Santana scoffed at Shakespeare and his Health and Wellness class. He was also taking the next parts of his second year vocal and workshop, dance, piano fundamentals, and half his 2yr acting course. Needless to say after all the complaining he was highly surprised to see Blaine in Mime and Movement, let alone his second year vocal and workshop and acting class . In fact, the only two classes Blaine wasn’t in were Kurt’s dance class and his Health and Wellness course. Blaine complained about Kurt’s course choices all semester long.
Kurt hid when he signed up for classes during the next summer. Not that it mattered. There was no one left to whine and complain at him about his choices at all. Not even Dani and Elliot. Not that Kurt blamed them. Between Santana being around and being horrid to Dani after that relationship didn’t work and Rachel’s treatment of the both after she was not included in the remake of the band and Blaine screeching at Elliot and then treating him like he was garbage from then on out, Kurt couldn’t fault them for being driven away…on good days. On bad days Kurt couldn’t fault them for staying away from his toxic being.
His gloom lasted through the first session of summer classes. He’d taken his biology /anatomy class with a lab, getting that science credit needed for the full BA, and ethics class and his first audition techniques class, as well as adding Intro to guitar and Songwriting basics. It was a full 10 credits, but it had knocked off two more general courses and some of the single credit courses he hadn’t fit in yet. He did a summer acting workshop as well which wasn’t counted in his credits but Madame Tibideaux counted as the other half of his 2yr acting. It stretched through both summer sessions and Kurt figured by the end of it he’d spent more time acting than if he’d taken the class.
His second summer session was filled with dance specifics. Three credits of Tap and three credits of Ballet, then single credit ballroom technique and Jazz ensemble dance. He asked and got permission to stretch his session to 11 credits and added Jazz Harmonies, Dialects and Cold Readings Techniques.
Cassandra July didn’t allow moping. Kurt was in her class and in her presence every day of the week for several hours.
Cassandra July loved pointing out your personal issues. However, oddly enough, she made Blaine out to be the idiot of the tale…the one who flunked out because he was too much a pompous ass to do things in the proper order and proper manner, the idiot who threw his money around and tossed fits and demanded special treatment to get himself put into classes he wasn’t in any manner prepared for. She drug Rachel through the wringer, and Kurt could not fault her one bit. She just growled at Kurt for letting their desertion drag him down instead of celebrating the freedom their absence afforded him.
Cassandra July pointed everything out loudly, in public. Within a week, guys who he’d been as friendly as he was able to be with in Stage Combat and Mime class without Blaine flipping his lid were coming up to him and talking to him. Elliot called and asked f Kurt wanted to hang out. Dani called and invited herself over to the loft, to help him cleanse it of lingering bad vibes. Friends he’d made in Adam’s Apples who he hadn’t been able to talk to for over a year called out of the blue.
Thea asked if he wanted to take another photography class…or rather, it turned out, follow her around to shoots on weekends and learn how to work shoots and do quick edits on site. Isabelle got back from her stint in LA and involved him more within the social circles at vogue again and colluded with Ms. July to have Kurt practice his ballroom dance with people Isabelle found several times over the course of the session. Kurt hadn’t even been aware the two knew each other well enough to interfere with his blues.
Isabelle and Dani also somehow got together and found him a good therapist. (A bit of an unholy pairing which also led to several articles on Roller Derby styles…much to Kurt’s dismay.)
Elliot, Chase, and Dani were with him when he was trying to figure out the schedule for his third year of NYADA. They looked over his shoulder as he registered his courses online.
“I thought this semester was work study?” Dani said.
“It’s the year actually, half is work study and the other half is ‘from script to stage’, which means costume and design, lighting and sound basics, make-up arts, set design and stage craft, and intro to directing. They basically split the 3rd years into two groups and tell them which semester they are supposed to do which in. My name was drawn for first semester for work study. At NYADA, if you don’t leave the city for work study, that simply means 4 credits of dance and four credits of vocal and workshop, 3 credits of generals and if your work study isn’t calculated to be at least six credit hours, then also the three credit screen and studio class on top of work study. I’m signing up for the class just in case so IF I have to take it my spot is there. And I’m taking full advantage of the option of registering a full year 3rd year and getting my spots in spring semester solidified. During your script to stage semester you have to have a vocal specialty class…I’m aiming for harmonies, a dance specialty class…Ms. July suggested Irish Dance and Clogging essentials, and an acting specialty…I’m going with the improve class. To top off the bunch you need a three credit general in there, too. I choose the arts appreciation course…it is mostly a lot of watching and attending and write-ups, which will be nice contrast to all the doing of that semester.”
“Are they trying to kill you third year?” Chase asked.
Kurt laughed. “Most those courses, like costume and lighting, are available to the non-musical theater students from the start for the most part, but we are pretty much kept out until our third year. I think they set it up this way to give us musical theater brats an ego check. Also, this forces some people to get involved in courses other than their vocals and dance and acting. Sadly, Rachel wasn’t the only one to have basically avoided courses that didn’t spot light her. Others seem to look forward to this year with gleeful anticipation.”
“So…”Elliot said.
“So?” Kurt asked.
“So…what are you signing up for?” Elliot prompted.
“Oh! So, Ms. July put me into acrobatic dance…more focus on leaps and tumbling and stuff, instead of her regular advanced dance course. She said it was because I have been doing dance during summers and have been ‘suitably committed’ to doing well in class, but Jules from Stage Combat last year said that third year regular advanced dance does a lot of Ballroom style dancing so I figure she moved me because I took ballroom already and have that cheer background that she’d like to torture me with. Then I have a vocal hour with Larson and a vocal hour with Tibideaux, and the two hour Tibideaux workshop. Larson is not happy, but he said if she doesn’t use me better this year she will not get me next semester at all and he will sign off for the extra credits next semester to have me for vocals and workshops to himself. I’m taking History of the Cinema, with focus on Musicals, for my general elective course. If I get the work study project at the Old Actor’s home…it will be 7 to 8 credit hours and I will do the studio class in summer. If I get the Children’s theater project instead it is six credits and I’ll have to talk to Tibideaux about the studio course.”
“Which work study project do you want most?” Dani asked.
“You know, I don’t really care.” Kurt said. “I would love to work at the home again. I love spending time with everyone there. But working with kids would be fun, too. I just want either of those projects. My third and fourth choices weren’t as fun sounding.”
“If you work with the kids, I want to tag along sometime.” Elliot said. “I have always wanted to learn enough about how to put together a youth drama program and have it be successful enough to last several years. It would be a great chance to maybe pick some minds.”
“Are you totally looking forward to your second semester?” Chase asked.
Kurt smiled. “You know, I am. I’ve been looking forward to these classes since I started NYADA. I declared a musical theater major from the very start, which I wished I hadn’t after talking with Adam after just a few weeks, but it was too late really, otherwise I would have taken some of the classes during my very first semester. I mean, costume design? Who wouldn’t want to take that?”
“Well, I can’t wait for you to take them…I expect you to sneak some time on the machines in there to put together some costumes for the band! I don’t have access to the costume shop anymore.” Elliot said.
Kurt laughed.
“You know, maybe you could see if you can add any of what you learn in your dance courses into the band dancing, as well.” Dani added. “I mean some leaps and jumps would be bound to get the girls all hot and bothered…and that is always good for future show turnouts.”
“Not to mention the men in the audience.” Chase added.
Kurt leaned back and looked at his friends, marveling at the difference it made when people truly wanted what was best for you and not just them. Elliot ruffled his hair and made Kurt squeak.
“You finished?” Dani asked.
Kurt nodded. “I’ll get an email confirmation in the morning.”
“Then I suggest we party! I hear a club calling our names!” Dani shouted.
Kurt smiled and stood up, heading straight for the door. “First round of whatever we are drinking tonight is on me. I am feeling quite fabulous.”
The four friends headed out, a haze of laughter following them.

Student Push Back Is Frustrating, but It Made Me a Better Teacher
I was driving to work listening to Dan Carlin’s political podcast “Common Sense.” Carlin was explaining how to make history relevant to all students, whether it's the history of hip-hop music, the evolution of the coffee industry or a person you pass on the street. What stayed with me that day: everything and everyone has a history—but history doesn't matter to students if it's not relevant to their own lives.
As a high school history teacher with 15 years of experience, this shouldn't have come as a surprise, but something about the way Carlin explained it awakened me that day. I've always used the power of personal connection to teach historical thinking skills such as critical analysis, synthesizing information and recognizing bias, but that day I realized I hadn't given students the freedom to decide what history they wanted to learn and how they wanted to learn it—and Carlin says choice is key. I was determined to create a project that would help me provide more choices for students. I called it “Big History.”
This was six years ago, when I was teaching at Mount Vernon Presbyterian School (MVPS) in Atlanta, Ga. MVPS is an independent school that serves close to 1,000 students in Pre-K through 12th grade. The mission of my school was to prepare students for an ever-changing world—bold, I know. We were given freedom to implement non-traditional practices such as design thinking, while maintaining those that are tried and true like document-based essay writing. As an educator, I felt empowered, and I wanted to create that same feeling for my students.
I was a ninth grade World History teacher at the time and since I taught every ninth grader at the school, I’d be able to implement the change I was making with my new project across the entire grade. The goal of the project was to allow students to self-select a topic they were interested in researching (E.g., fashion, warfare, sports) and share about it as if they were an educator. The project would culminate in a presentation of the information they learned using a format that allowed them to demonstrate their personal strength. I was a genius.
After sharing some basic parameters for the project, students began working. One young lady studied the history of fashion and presented her findings with a fashion show that brought the audience through the evolution of fashion from the prehistoric era to the classical time period. Another student investigated warfare and created a video game to demonstrate how the Greeks battled various city-states. While many students enjoyed the freedom to investigate their interests and share with their peers, there were, as always, some students who struggled to complete the assignment. Anya was one of them.
It surprised me that Anya was struggling. She was a top student. As an eighth grader, her sole mission was to receive the highest grades in her class so she could be recognized on Awards Day. This was a lofty goal since Anya’s class was an academically competitive group.
Anya thought outside the box at every juncture. This was a quality I admired about her, but it was causing some roadblocks for our project. Anya was not seeing the amazing revelation I had around teaching history. She pushed back constantly to gain an understanding of why we were doing this project, and she rarely accepted my responses. No matter how much I tried to explain my why, or support her in identifying what she wanted to research, we couldn’t find common ground.
I encourage students to push back and ask questions, but it was getting to a point where frustration was creeping in for both of us. Before our frustration escalated, she sent me an email about an “aha moment” she had. Her issue was not the Big History project. She was struggling to understand why we do projects the way we do in school and she said that stemmed from an even broader question she was noodling on: why is school set up the way it is? After spending a good amount of time talking about education and schools, it hit us: This was her research question for the project.
Anya's Question Tree, Image Credit: Anya
Anya studied various school models like High Tech High and the Watershed School in Boulder, CO. She conducted deep research and had so much to share, but when it came time to decide on a medium for her presentation, she had an internal struggle. Anya didn’t think it was right to give a traditional presentation to showcase her research on innovative school models that were exploring new ways of teaching and learning. She didn’t want to share information that her classmates could find if they searched on Google. Instead, she wanted to use her research to spark changes at our school.
I proposed the concept of redesigning projects at our school, which I had been thinking about this for awhile. Her constant line of questioning and all we had learned together through her research prompted us to take action together. Anya prototyped a structural change—an ideal schedule that would allow the time and flexibility for the kinds of projects that, in her view, were indicative of an optimal learning environment. She collected data and brought charts to class that displayed her findings to provide evidence for her claim that things needed to change, and she brought multiple schedule options to think through. Her ideal schedule carved out time for student collaboration, off-campus experiences and time for teachers to serve as mentors for students.
While most students presented for five minutes, Anya’s presentation was 45 minutes long with a 40-page slide deck. Teachers and students from other classes flocked in to watch her share after hearing so much about her project, and three people recorded her presentation.

Anya’s project led to some changes in my class, impacted elements of her personal education path and created change within our school. In my history class, her project paved the way for Genius Hour, a period of time dedicated to independent project work. Anya and a few other students continued to research the transformation of education. She even went on to found a student led-magazine, Trailblazers, which focused on the education transformation movement. MVPS created an Innovation Diploma program, a school-based startup that gives students the opportunity to develop as young innovators by working with various industry leaders and creating solutions to company challenges. Anya was, of course, a founding participant.
Anya’s fierce demand to understand why school and projects are designed the way they are also led to some personal changes in my own practice. The experience allowed me to see myself as a mentor and helped me recognize that everyone in the room has something to teach. It showed me that to push the limits of education, I have to try new things, listen to my students and trust them to make smart choices.
Today, Anya is a Stamps Presidential Scholar at Georgia Tech and a member of their Grand Challenges Program, which allows her to spend time collaborating with peers and teachers to solve sustainable solutions to a problem she is passionate about. She is a business administration major, though in her studies and Grand Challenges work, she continues to look at education with a desire for radical change.
What started as push back from Anya, which I almost misconstrued as disrespect, ended up building a strong connection that has remained. I had no idea Anya would have such an impact on my teaching over the past six years. In fact, we still talk regularly and are currently co-writing a book about the impact relationships have on education.
Today, I am the STEAM Interdisciplinary Specialist at the Atlanta Girls’ School, where I’ve applied many of the lessons I learned from Anya and her Big History project. Every time I co-create a new lesson plan or design a project, I channel Anya and ask "why?" Why are we doing this work? Why does it matter? Asking myself these questions pushes me to think outside the box like Anya always does and that has made me a stronger teacher.

Mk.gee Creates with Transparency and Intention on Sophomore EP, ‘Fool’ [Q&A]
Throwing caution to the wind, Michael Gordon better known as Mk.gee, left his East Coast home of New Jersey for the modern Land of Milk and Honey, California. Attending the USC School of Music, Mk.gee began honing his craft and allowing his new home to mold his identity as an artist. Weaving together elements of R&B, jazz, electronica, funk and pop, Mk.gee refuses to let genre stand in the way of his creative process.
Mk.gee released his first body of work, an album titled Pronounced McGee in early May of 2018. The album is as dynamic as the artist, various elements of sound combined with dense lyrics create a sonic catacomb of emotion. Needless to say, Mk.gee’s album debut was a victorious showcase of his raw talent as a songwriter and musician.
Wasting no time, Mk.gee returns with his new EP, Fool, serving as a time-stamp of his growth, both as a musician and a person. We had the privilege to speak with Mk.gee about his passion for music, the construction of his sound, first tour, Frank Ocean and his plans for the future.
OTW: When did you first start making music?
Mk.gee: I started around 7, I started writing on the piano while I was taking lessons. It felt very natural to write music, and it was the only fun thing about playing the piano at the time to be honest. Having a voice early on in both writing and playing was really important for me. It allowed me to find some sort of identity. I started actually recording my own music when I was in middle school/ early high school though. I had a band most of my teen years. They were really talented guys, but it was a really unhealthy environment to be creative and to grow. They put down a lot of my writing and singing. For my 14th birthday, I asked for a Tascam porta studio, so I could just record my own songs and play all the parts. It wasn’t like a “Fuck youm I’ll just do everything” intention, it just happened out of absolute necessity to create without repercussions.
OTW: You’re originally from New Jersey -- did the move to California effect your sound in anyway?
Mk.gee: Of course, hundred percent. I didn’t even really take recording my music seriously until I moved. I primarily saw myself as a guitarist when I first lived on the west coast. I’ve had stuff at that time of the move that I recorded/produced by myself at home in New Jersey, but I’ve never released any of the songs, so I didn’t really have a “sound” beforehand. When I moved, I became infatuated by a lot of music and artists that I was never exposed to on the East Coast. I moved in 2015 by myself kind of abandoning all preconceptions of me and my ego/past-life/etc… with that I learned to become a sponge. Not that I let go of past tastes and identity completely, but I learned how to let everything inspire me because subconsciously I knew no one could call me out and say listening or making a certain type of music wasn’t “me.”
I was introduced to artist’s like Blood Orange, Jai Paul, Lolawolf, New Order, just really awesome popular counter-culture stuff that I found an identity in.

OTW: What inspired your pursuit of a music career? Did you ever think you would be getting the recognition you are?
Mk.gee: The music career thing felt like very natural just because I’ve been gigging and writing since I was pretty young. I was inspired by a lot people; I don’t think one person inspired me, but I remember my old jazz upright bass teacher taught me really important life lessons as a musician -- to preach honesty and intention. My parents are really supportive, even though they don’t necessarily love my music, which is cool. I know I would be writing and recording my music, I just didn’t know I would be a full out solo artist. I focused on guitar and jazz for most of my teen years and thought that I would be primarily a session/touring musician.
I’m not sure if I thought about recognition or validation a lot as I grew up, but my younger self probably would be pretty proud that I’m even doing what I’m doing in the first place.
OTW: Your lyrics feel personal, what’s your songwriting process like?
Mk.gee: It used to only be rhythm based. I’ve always been obsessed with rhythm, not just rhythm counterpoint like in guitar/drums but in the way people pronounce things and the way rhythmic words sounded specific to how they come out of people’s mouths. I slaved to this the last record, making the groove/track/beat first then finding sounds that married together really well with lyrics. For this project, I broke that a bit and found some different schools of thought for lyrics and writing. This record I wrote more with just guitar and vocals or synth and vocals just to stress the songwriting more. The process constantly changes though; I get bored easily.
But yeah, vulnerability is adjacent to connection.
OTW: Saying your music is diverse would be an understatement, what inspires your sound? Mk.gee: A lot of stuff. I don’t really believe in like guilty pleasures. I listen to what I like and what makes me feel something. Just anything that moves me. Could be from like experimental electronic/noise music to folk or pop music. I make different music because it’s just a lot more fun Having an album with every song consistently like the last is boring to me. I just like to change and bounce around a lot; that’s just how I like to operate. For this project I listened to a lot of artists like Grouper, Phil Elverum, and George Harrison. I try to find a lot of inspiration in colors and photographs too. It brings the music to a more physical, colorful place. A lot of the writing on the project was to Lauren Greenfield and Nan Goldin photographs/magazines.
OTW: You’re undertaking all of the writing, recording and mixing duties yourself; what spurred the crusade to do it all yourself?
Mk.gee: It doesn’t really come from a selfish point of view. Doing all of the parts just brings together the most organic piece of “me” that can possibly be curated. It makes me really happy and satisfied doing all of the work. I find out a lot about myself through every song and every record because of it. I don’t really like to talk about me doing it all because it becomes distracting to the music.
It’s not about how I did it or where I did it, it’s just about the art.
OTW: You worked on your new EP between tour dates this summer; was the project inspired by your time on the road?
Mk.gee: To be honest, almost all of the songs were done before I went on the road, and some of them before I released the first double EP in May. A lot of people say I’m releasing this music too soon after the album, but I want to catch people up with who I am now as a person and what I’m gravitated towards. Pronounced McGee was done about 2 years ago, which is usually the standard album cycle, but for a 21-year-old at the time, that’s 2 completely different beings, and I’m very conscious of that.
I think it’s good to release spontaneously and freely; it should be an accurate reflection of the artist as they release it, not who you were a couple years ago. It should be a time stamp.
As for the tour, I didn’t write on the road too much. I wrote a lot when I came back being inspired by the shows and traveling. It’s too early to tell what will happen to them though.
OTW: You recently toured with Omar Apollo; what was that experience like? Are you excited to hit the road again any time soon?
Mk.gee: I really couldn’t ask for a better tour partner. Omar is a homie, and the whole crew was just a great hang, really down to earth. The tour got me really excited to hit another one soon, hopefully on the East Coast because my friends and family really haven’t seen me play and sing my stuff ever.
OTW: Do you plan on releasing visuals alongside the upcoming EP?
Mk.gee: Some things are in the work for post release, yeah.
OTW: How did you choose which singles to release first; what made you go with “Come On” and “New Year?”
Mk.gee: I chose “Come On” because it was the good bridge from the old stuff to the new project and the title of the EP, Fool, is taken the song. “New Year”’s color represents the album a bit more accurately.
youtube
OTW: Your song, “You,” was recently featured on blonded RADIO, specifically blonded Midterms pt. I -- how does it feel to know Frank Ocean is a fan of your music?
Mk.gee: It feels a bit unreal still. I screamed so much when it happened (laughs). I’m obviously a huge fan of Frank as well as the radio show. Huge shout out to Joe for throwing me on and showing me so much love. I don’t strive for validation, but it feels good when it happens. I’m extremely grateful.
OTW: Who are you listening to right now? Who are your Ones to Watch?
Mk.gee: I’ve been listening to a lot of The Microphones, Grouper, Lucy Pearl, The Stylistics, etc… My friends are ones to watch for sure. They are making really amazing/individual art right now and they inspire me a ton; Bella Porter, Big Buddy, Orkka, and Umi to name a few.

The Lazy Way To vortex venom red dot
One among the very popular styles from the firearms industry within the last two yrs has really come to be the handgun mounted reddish dot. Like along time staple of limitless course contest pistols, the manufacturers are finding ways to produce the reddish dots much more meaningful and also considerably more lasting to changeover them to re take pistols. As an established pioneer in the current marketplace, Vortex Optics was on the very top of things with n one but 2 new handgun red dots released for the particular use. Besides vortex venom manual built Razor red dot that's been already around in the marketplace to get a couple of decades today, the brand new Venom along with Viper reddish dots are somewhat marginally even larger to accommodate standard handgun mounting plates like the people awarded all the MOS and even Smith and Wesson M&P Core apparatus. This week, we will look at every of the showcased new versions and investigate the advantages of working with a red dot developed handguns and also the way that those two disagree irrespective of seeming virtually identical. Red-dot Advantage To genuinely receive a amazing idea of just how crucial the Venom and also Viper red dots are to the at the present time, we'll have to grasp the reason why they are therefore sexy to handgun shooters. Traditionally, the handguns have consistently used the reliable iron arenas now being really a three-dot method or any main-stream "U" form with entry sight. Tactical gun shooters all through the late 1990's in to the new century found utilizing a red dot optic. Their rate is getting on-target and also glancing in you to the next significantly improved. As stated earlier in the day, these red dots together side some small alterations in the direction of the brackets to be used with handguns begun exhibiting your own competition circuit in the same minute. Between real world usage of gun approaches and lessons found around your competition matter, a bunch of marginally useful advice has been received united aspect training a developing amount of shooters all over some great benefits of dots that were reddish. Besides speed, the red dots had been regarded as a lot of use to shooters with getting older eyes that maynot see iron stains nicely. The different light of those shores allowed for shooters to see at a wider selection of light states. Maybe maybe not only could shooters watch the arenas, nevertheless they quickly found their accepted spaces increased as nicely because of single-point planning that broadly speaking provided a harrowing target point of view in comparison to standard iron sights. Tactically, those pistol reddish dots made open borders inside the struggle and in the streets functioning law-enforcement. Obtaining the dot to concentrate on allowed to find a bigger area of view pay attention to societal recognition. Normally the shooter required to maintain focus on the front sight and enable everything to blur when shooting the gunman. The red dot makes it possible for a far superior perspective target while watching with the red scatter clear and concentrated. Special-teams undergone the reddish scatter grip by using their night vision gizmos. These NVGs since they're frequently proven to could grab just one reddish dot far superior in comparison to using the operator must work out in which the non-illuminated iron arenas wound up in precisely the darkened. Venom · Reticle 6 & 3 MOA Dot alternatives · Dot Coloration Bright-red (Adaptive) · Eye Alleviation Limitless · Excess Fat 1.1 ounce. · Length 1.9" · Max Wind age Adjustment 120 MOA · Magnification 1x · Mount Pica tinny Viper · Reticle 6 MOA Dot · Dot Coloration Bright-red (Adaptive) · Eye Alleviation Limitless · Unwanted Fat 1.34 oz. · Period 1.8" · Max Elevation Adjustment One-hundred Ten MOA · Max Wind era Adjustment a Hundred MOA · Magnification 1x · Mount Pica tinny Further Things in Every Box · Pica tinny Mount · Rain Pro Tect · Lens Cloth · Mounting Screws · CR 1632 Battery · Screw-driver · Assortment Time Last year twelve months I were lucky for Viper and Venom red dot optics for analyzing into some Glocks I would use of. Fellow gun author because of the Swanson Media team, " Craig Reynolds conducted the Viper on his own personalised Glock 3-4 MOS 9 mm though I initially analyzed the Venom within my own Glock 34 MOS. My first test of the Venom red dot came in an area indoor stove that the day after upgrading it into my pistol. After roughly 30 rounds, then your Spurs walked. Let me repeat the optic flew O-F-F! Fortunately, even though vortex venom 3 moa red dot on the cement flooring, the Venom was intact and functioning absolutely. When scrutinizing the mounting screws then it seemed that the threads eliminated out of their store. I took a quick trip for the area components shop also found a purse of metal screws the exact very same size while the mill fasteners from Glock. Having a dab of gloomy lock-site and the two screws that are brand new, it is not just a issue. Such as this particular episode, I have just learned of any one of it with the problem out of just two added shooters in regards to the Glock about the web forum, quite possibly now becoming with the whole specific gun together side red dot combo. After some travels into some training center called "The Swamp," the reports on the red dots were nearly indistinguishable. Craig and that I agreed, 1st we would have to change the mill Glock sights for suppressor arenas to them to turn into tall adequate to co-witness the optics. Second, there's been a specific learning curve for employing reddish dots around pistols irrespective people of practice together with all reddish dot variants on rifles. Developing muscle-memory to allow a fast and slick draw in to a crystal clear sight shot does take some time and lots of repetition. No thing the difficulties, the positive aspects ancient were draining staying witnessed by people. The moment Craig and that I exchanged that our factory spots were with a bunch of colorful suppressor evening arenas out of Trijicon, matters just got enhanced. Having been able to co-witness my brand new iron arenas with most of the current reddish scatter, my capability to index goals climbed by leaps and bounds earlier I entrusted myself into using the red dot. Following hitting outside in a one of Swanson Media crew's own, John Phillips of most Survivor Creek Tactical I'd him build a slim account, flexible holster to my personal Glock 3 4 with precisely the exact same RTI platform allowing belt and also Molle loop take. Fulfill Craig's demands for everyday a low-ride holster was made out from none aside from your King of both Kydex himself, " John Phillips of both Survivor Creek Tactical as well. The moment getting the holster from John's shop, Craig's Glock begun to experience in the waist band of these trousers daily to your play and also work. For individuals that are not familiarised with Craig's day job if he isn't writing he possesses a well-renowned heating and air-conditioning enterprise. Atleast five times per week, Craig could be found running under domiciles and around 100-degree attics to put in components and then fix equipment that's destroyed. It is vital to see cause Craig's Glock needs to survive anything they can while still riding in the waistband of their pants. Does put worry around the guns complete but also assesses the durability and dependability of the reddish jolt attached? During the calendar year's span, the Spurs lived and had been executing just along with this very first day that's mounted. At the time, Craig and that I started to appraise notes to numerous unique predicaments the optics analyzed along side the way that they accomplished. Craig functioned far on light states out of their discipline throughout late evenings and nighttime moment. The red dot performed nicely on alloy objects out to ranges of twenty-five and thirty meters although optimal lighting gave Craig selfconfidence together using his regular haul because of his side-arm of taste while also outside hunting and kayaking. At the same period I was using the precise Venom while teaching within an NRA teacher in a inside stove nearly just about every Sunday early morning. This assortment is likewise very badly lit but creates a number of the most useful in door light coaching that you may request. The versatility of brightness modification enabled the mind to execute attractively for my me and me. By allowing shooters to produce usage of one of many reddish scatter-armed pistols in combination with their firearms with iron sights has ever changed in to permit them to have additional teaching energetic at creating them a lot better entire shooters. The red dots provide shooters better functionality which leads to higher confidence in beating their limitations in their utilizing their own firearms. Instructing my own brand new shooters how exactly to utilize the crimson dot system tended to result in a more compact learning curve in contrast to having my capable shooters. With brand new shooters, there have been no any preconceived notions regarding frequent sighting instead of compared to come across shooters needing to understand a brand-new sighting app cause I did this. As an example my pistol faculty students, a superb bonus are discovered from the red dot "L" formed design and style. The absolute most appropriate angle made by Viper and Venom provided enormous leverage in handling the pistols one-handed. When utilising the hand merely to great and get a handle on the gun, the tape regularly needs to do the job well with the top layer of the buckle or border of this boot to grab the slip having adequate pressure to print the slip and also room near to battery is some times categories to a diminished tier. Both Viper and Venom functioned being a hardy make-shift lever to do this accurately. I'd like to become this impressed with that which I had learned from Craig and which I had learned of your Venom I opted to attempt of these Viper elements also. From the time I was knowledgeable about how well the Venom performed about the 9-mm point, I chose to observe how much time it truly is kept in my own Glock forty MOS chambered in 10-mm I personally utilize as my "forests rifle" once I am out hunting or trekking. The new Viper would be analyzed on an identical point cause the Venom was supposed to continue steadily to continue to keep matters equivalent, therefore that I installed on my Glock 34 MOS. After some months of analyzing chromium, '' I began to see that the Venom started off first to show off during the 10-mm's recoil. I researched the issue and heard the straps below the battery often detect flexed through heavy recoil and cannot let the capability to flow continually. Right after putting venom vortex below the battery , then that wasn't any more a struggle for that rest of the section of this test interval. Even the Viper red scatter done with no trouble and into exactly the exact same fantastic penalties whiles that the Venom. Both variations were quite notable and has been trusted methods such as drama or workplace. From the conclusion over a twelve months old assessing, Craig's Viper seasoned not had a battery life saw zero troubles with all the full brain. Between the Venom and the Viper parts, I tested during the same point I only struck usually the sole cited difficulty including all the battery prongs inside the device and needed to displace the batter on the Viper right after constantly pretending to near the unit off immediately after my stove travels the built in 14-hour auto-shut off conserve quite a sufficient level of battery lifetime. All parts examined were ran on approximately a moderate setting and arrived at or surpassed the 20,000-hour markers. Final Ideas Employing a retail price tag of # 329 for each Viper and the Venom, your pick where would be your best ping lies completely within the individual shooter's customized choices. Currently using just above a yr-old experience using all Vortex Viper and also Venom optics currently within my own pistols, each have been still relocating powerful and doing well. I've discovered in my own private encounter, the reduction account with this Viper experienced the little border together with pistols being a consequence of the particular location of the battery lifetime and also much greater view if co-witnessing utilizing suppressor altitude iron sights. You will detect CR2032 a less demanding battery to get in a broader selection of shops in contrast to your Venom's CR1632 battery too. The Venom reddish dot is excellent for the Picatinny railing of shotguns such as the Benelli M 4, rifles such as the AR-platform and especially for guns like the HK SP5K. vortex 6 24 pst of impression is really somewhat faster in gaining an objective compared to tube vision that a standard tube styled red scatter provides. This spacious open view comes at a small price label when you examine to the tube mode red dots using a broad glass appearance of this Viper and also Venom reddish dots in the form of vulnerability into the current weather which could harm optics. Through heavy use and regular transfer in between Craig Reynolds and that I personally, we've discovered no harm or indications of usage for every one among those versions analysed within the last calendar year. In recent torture evaluation on those sorts of reddish dots along with others, have set them in the top grade for severe durability within the small business. If anything needs to appear nonetheless, Vortex's fantastic full-life "no mistake" guarantees on each of their kindness makes certain you issue that you'd wish to be worried. I ask you to check out on 1800GunsAndAmmo. Com's entire line up of Vortex Optics and find that which is right for you.
