Prison of Plastic Thoughts

So, finished Prison of Plastic. Here are my spoilery thoughts: - I think I understand better why this show is called Epithet Erased. A very core theme is the pain that these powers cause, mainly to the inscribed themselves. - I really like this decision. I was expecting this to go in the direction of "oh no Inscribed hurt Mundies" like so many stories do. This is really tired, and always rubs me the wrong way because of how they are resolved. The notion of somebody's abilities being fundamental to who they are feels very ableist (looking at you, Legend of Korra). Being blinded would change my life, but it wouldn't make me any less. - On that note, I hope we get to see a character actually have their epithet taken away and to not get it back later in the same arc. I wanna see somebody grapple with what not having it means, and grow beyond their epithet. - The thing that unites all of the antagonists, is how they view powers. Mera's epithet causes chronic pain, Zora's sucks the joy out of life, Lori possibly accidentally caused the death of her mother with it. For these characters epithets are disabilities. This has a ton of narrative potential, and I'm immensely curious to see where Jello goes with this. - When you embrace that both Mundies and Inscribed can be the metaphorical representation of disabled people, EE is actually a very compelling disability analogy. Not sure if that's intentional, but I don't care! - Further on the EE-as-disability-analogy, I think this makes Molly the perfect protagonist. The first thing we see Molly use her epithet for is prevent overstimulation. While for other characters their powers are just nice boons or even active hindrances, Molly is the only one that relies on her Epithet. She runs counter to Bliss Ocean's ideals, in an interesting way. - Moving away from disability now! - Lori is so hatable, but also so lovable. Seeing her actually play along with Molly was so such an amazing moment, very sad to see how it ended. - Also, very conflicted on shipping Lori and Gio. They have such chemistry, but also Lori absolutely does not deserve him. I need her to finish her arc so I can see this ship god damn it. - Rick is the best. I envy his energy. - I totally thought Ricks friends in Ocean Country were killed for helping a slave escape for a sec. - Naven has such twist villain energy. Same vibes as Ralsei. The way he talks to Lori and the fact he has Yoomtah as a driver are all very sus. - I really want to see what Trixie’s epithet is, assuming they have one. I’m expecting something super obscure. There’s also that crow, and the possible Songstress connection I’ve seen some people theorize about. - Giovanni kidnapping Molly is so on-brand. He was really great this arc in general, really. Didn’t have a lot of big, bombastic moments, but I actually liked that. Get to see more chill Giovanni. AKA, what makes him so cool.

thoughts on prison of plastic

it's been over a week now and of course I'm still in brainrot so might as well get some of it down. Of course I'll be getting into some spoiler territory, I'll just keep it all under a read more

let me start off with saying of course I adored it all, the voice acting in the audiobook was amazing and really helped bring out the best in it all. I don't think I could ever read the book without hearing everyone.

I love Rick and Naven so much and want to see so much more of them already. I want to see just a bit of Rick running around the STEM building trying to make friends and just seeming unhinged to everybody and Naven having to relax his staff like "don't worry guys he's not some random bum that slipped past security. Yes I know what I'm doing, stop making that face."

Rick is honestly such a delight and a sweet babi when he finally calms down and I absolutely loved going in just expecting Naven to be some kind of soft meek pushover but then he's just this big sass master that will stare into your soul and call you pathetic.

The neo trio are my new adopted daughters and no one can stop me. I loved their dynamic through the whole book. I was instantly in love by just the prologue alone.

Giovanni also being a massive highlight as always. From him being as dense as a rock to fully knowing the problems around him. Also him immediately becoming enemies with Martin and kidnapping Molly is the greatest move of all eternity yas Gio slay! Part of me hopes he may go back for Lorelai and steal both of Martin's most valuable treasures and either they live happily ever after like that or Martin actually shows care and concern and his daughters can yell at him for being more garbage than the literal garbage island.

I did come around to liking Lorelai in the end, at first I really didn't like her because she just seemed like a bitchy sister. But her interacting with Giovanni and also getting a full deep dive of her trauma and feeling called out because I also cope with escapeism really did bring her around for me. I want both these girls to catch a break.

MOLLY BEING THE MOST ADORABLE BEAN EVER AT THE END AND GETTING TO PLAY WITH HER FOOD AND JUST FEEL LIKE THE LITTLE KID SHE IS IS WHAT KEEP ME BREATHING.

Overall this book was great, I think the only qualm I had was Trixie's deep dive into her insecurities felt almost a little off to me. Like it feels like you're on the highway and you see something off to the side in the next exit you're about to pass and your dad hard swerves to get to the exit.

That's also another thing, not particularly a qualm but as you read you very much start to notice that Jello LOVES comparative descriptions. A lot of things are like a lot of other things. It's nice to see and I think does help build the particular charm Epithet Erased has but I remember seeing a post saying you could make a drinking game out of all the comparative descriptions and I feel that's a hospital visit waiting to happen.

But yeah, this book is amazing. If you love Epithet Erased PLEASE go get it yourself along with the audiobook.

Just finished Prison of Plastic and I managed to only cry once! Loved it alot and because I'm not sure if there's a spoiler tag for it, spoilers under the cut.

FIRSTLY!!!!! The scene where I cried was when Molly snapped at Lorelai. Fricking hell man that hit hard, and I was listing to the audiobook. Think it might be the first time ever that I've cried at a book THAT hard.

Secondly, YES GIO TAKE MOLLY AWAY FROM THAT WRETCHED HOUSEHOLD!!!!!! Crusher and Gio are now Molly's new parents, fight me. Molly deserves to be a child again after everything she's gone through.

I'd just like to say The Gio Martyn interaction was exactly how I expected it.

Naven is kinda sussy tbh but I'm not sure yet. Although if we're talking about new characters I just need to say Rick is AMAZING!!! Second favorite character right there, Ramsey will always be first place though. He's so charming and charismatic that how can you not be this man's friend?

I also loved Trixie and Phoenica a lot. They're both adorable and such good friends for Molly. Can't wait to see Feenie just become magical girl in a later installment if one ever comes! (Side note Trixie and Gio are cousins??? Wow interesting) Overall I loved it and can't wait to see what's next for Epithet Erased!(If Brendan ever decides to continue it after this point)
