Protecting Yourself & Creating a Good Experience
An unfortunate post necessitated by recent events.  The unfortunate truth of reality is that we, as non-psychic human beings, are unable to determine with certainty the motives of other humans around us.  If someone claims to have good intentions but are hurting you, are they simply presenting themselves poorly or are they lying entirely?  This is a question you can never truly answer, but here I will guide you through some ways to protect yourself while being kind to yourself and others.
You may reblog this if you’d like.
Although this post was created specifically in response to the turmoil in the Avatar: The Last Airbender fandom, it’s not specific to this exact situation and the purpose is not to take a side.  The purpose is to encourage everyone to do their part in ending hateful behavior and crafting a good community.
Contents:
0.  Don’t send mean asks to people 1.  Install an IP Tracker on your blog. 1.a (How to) Install an IP Blocker on your blog. 2.  Curating your Experience 3.  Making First Contact 4.  Analyzing a Message 5.  Fiction as Fiction VS Fiction as Reality 6.  The Author’s Duty 7.  Echo Chambers & Lateral Thinking 8.  Accepting Differing Opinions 9.  Good Intentions (Pave the Road to Hell) 10.  Being Mean is Fun (so do it in non-harmful ways) 11.  Morality (Personal, Community, and Legal)
0.  Don’t send mean asks to people.
You know, I saw a post some time ago on the internet that basically said:  Why do we see so many posts teaching people how to avoid being raped and virtually nothing telling people not to rape others?  So, as obvious as this may sound, I’m going to give you a gentle reminder to not send mean asks to people.
Perhaps you are angry.  Perhaps something else is bothering you.  Perhaps you honestly feel like you are doing the right thing.  These feelings are entirely valid and I understand.  However, being mean to someone else on the internet is not going to solve anything.  At best, it’s going to get you ignored and at worst, it’s going to actively escalate things.
If you feel down, depressed, or upset, consider this service:  https://www.crisistextline.org/
US and Canada: text 741741 UK: text 85258 | Ireland: text 50808
It’s a confidential service that will help support you.
On the other hand, if you feel like you genuinely have a bone to pick with someone, take a step back.  Get a cup of coffee, or tea; watch a YouTube video, and later on in this post we’ll discuss cooperative problem solving, the importance of word choice, and how to deescalate a situation.
1.  Install an IP Tracker on your blog.
This is a very simple and completely legal process.  The easiest way to do so is to sign up for Statcounter.  This is a website for market and visitor analysis, but it does IP tracking for free, which is what we’re looking for.  The site will even guide you through installing it.  However--do not post it into the description.  In my experiences, this does not work.  Instead, click Edit HTML, search for <body>, and paste it directly underneath that.
Tumblr media
For this to work most effectively, make sure that you have the Timestamps extension enabled within the inbox in XKit.  If you do not have XKit installed, you can find directions on their Tumblr page, here:  https://new-xkit-extension.tumblr.com/
1.a.  (How to) Install an IP Blocker on your blog.
Although Tumblr claims to give you the ability to IP Block through the inbox by blocking anonymous asks, many people have expressed doubts that it actually works.  Therefore, here’s an explanation showing you how to do it yourself.  There are three steps to this, all taking place in the Edit HTML section we’ve left off in last section.
1.
Directly below where the web analytics code above ends, paste this:
<script type="text/javascript" src="https://l2.io/ip.js?var=userip"></script>
2.
Directly below the previous command, paste this:
<script>
function ipBlock() {        var ip = userip;     //example: "0.0.0.0", "5.5.5.5", "3.3.3.3",     var bannedips=[         "155.555.55.55"     ];     var handleips=bannedips.join("|");     handleips=new RegExp(handleips, "i");            if (ip.search(handleips)!=-1){
                window.location.replace("http://www.tumblr.com");        }
} </script>
You can customize this script in a few ways.  First, bannedips needs to be the ip(s) you wish to block.  You can add more by separating them by commas and enclosing them in quotes, as the example shows.  Secondly, in the window.location.replace line, you can insert any valid address.  Here are some suggestions I give people:
Tumblr homepage.  Basic and effective.
A link to a Google search of something, e.g. How to not send mean asks on the internet
Your own tumblr blog, so they get stuck in a refresh loop
A similarly spelled but nonexistent blog, to give the illusion you deleted/moved
3.
Finally, add onload=“ipBlock()” to your body tag:
<body onload = "ipBlock()">
That should be everything to get it working.  If you want to test it, click the link in step two, copy and paste the IP address that is displayed into the bannedips, save, and visit your blog.  If it’s working right, you should get thrown off.
If you don’t want your IP Block active, just remove step three and return your tag to <body>.
2.  Curating Your Experience
Although Tumblr itself does not allow the functionality, there are ways to ensure that certain words do not appear on your dashboard.  XKit has a blacklist feature which will hide posts containing certain words.  Also of note is the wildcard feature, which is accessed by adding an asterisk after the word, ex.
nsfw   ->  Only blocks exactly that word and that tag nsfw*  ->  Will block any word or tag containing that phrase
However, I would like to gently notify you that there is significant research that actively avoiding content does more harm than good!  Only you can know what is best for you, but there is a such thing as excessive avoidance.
3.  Making First Contact
If there’s anything you take from this post, please let it be this one thing:
Always be kind.  At first.  Then tear them a new one if necessary.
The inevitable happens.  As far as you can tell, you’re minding your own business on your blog.  Your ask box lights up and you perk up, wondering which of your friends is reaching out to you.
Instead, the message is nasty, condemning you for your support of your favorite ship and the theme of your blog.
You’re upset, of course!  And you have every right to be!  You put a lot of time and effort into this blog and your ship, and to have someone so coldly butt in--you can feel the frustration mounting!  Tears are glistening and your body trembles as you type up a strongly worded essay and--
Stop.
It’s okay.
Take a deep breath and step away from your emotions for a minute.  Your emotions are valid-- but so are the sender’s.
Instead of starting a fight, be kind.  It may hurt.  You may not want to be, but I promise you it’s worth it.  Here’s a template response:
Hi, anon.  I’m really sorry that you feel this way about [thing] and will gladly take it into consideration in the future.  Could you please tell me more about why you dislike [thing]?  If you’d like to take some time to gather your thoughts, I’d be happy to discuss this issue with you.
Let me confess something.  I don’t suggest this out of pure kindness.  I suggest this because their response will tell you what you need to know.  Remember how the intro talked about how people’s intentions are incredibly hard to figure out?  This is a little trick I like to use to get them to play their cards.
There are three possible responses:  They respond angrily, they respond kindly and respectfully, or they don’t respond at all.
In the first case, you may get something that resorts to expletives.  They may call you names.  They may tell you to delete your blog or any other amount of nasty things.  It’s very likely that your very attempt at kindness will anger this person!  This is a troll/bully whose sole interest is to get you upset and get themselves attention.  At this point, you can safely delete and ignore the messages without any guilt.
In the second case, you have a person with a genuine grievance who just happened to address it poorly.  Both of you have a duty to humanity to resolve the problem respectfully and politely.  You’ve avoided escalating the conflict, you may learn something new and you may even make a new friend!
This also applies to reaching out to someone for the first time.  You see someone doing something you don’t like.  Oh, it just makes you blind with rage!
Again.  I’m going to advise you to stop. Take a deep breath.  No one responds well to name-calling and being condemned.  There’s a few techniques you can use (see if you can spot them in the template message):
Listen to their opinions
Actively ask to hear their opinion
Ask for clarification
Validate the way they feel
Avoid casting blame
(These techniques work a lot in real life, too!)
Again, there are some genuinely scummy people in life!  But, there are many, many more ignorant people.  A gentle pointer goes much further than yelling and screaming.
4.  Analyzing a Message
We’ve all been there.  We’ve gotten a message and we’ve panicked--do they hate me now?!  Is this a troll message or genuine criticism?!
Again.  Relax.  Push aside your emotions and focus on the logical words as they appear before you.  Ask yourself if you are reading a tone that doesn’t exist.  For example, not everyone puts active thought into choosing between “ok”, “Ok”, “okay”, “Okay”, “ok.” etc.  Sometimes an ok is just that.  An ok.
Break the message into parts.  Find the logical structures and decipher them piece by piece.  Someone who throws some very hurtful words into a message may indeed have a point, despite coming off as very crude.  Accept that different parts of a message may mean different things.  The world is very complicated and multifaceted.  Try to avoid sticking labels to things.
5.  Fiction as Fiction VS Fiction as Reality
I’ve seen a lot of arguments floating around recently that seem to think that these two ideas exist in a vacuum.  It’s simply not true.  The ideas are entwined intrinsically--Fiction is both fiction and reality.  Fiction was created to mimic reality yet extend it far beyond what can happen in the confines of reality.  What happens in reality impacts fiction and what happens in fiction impacts reality.
This is undeniable.
Both of these ideas exist, and as the author it is your duty to figure out what that means for you.
You cannot hide behind Fiction as Fiction to ignore your responsibilities as an author.
You cannot hide behind Fiction as Reality to promote censorship.
Both of these ideas are far too simple for the complicated world we live in.  A complicated concept requires complicated solutions.
Every word you write has an impact on the people that reads it.  This is the very definition of writing.  We use writing as a tool to share emotions.  Extend empathy.  We use writing to make people cry, to make people laugh, to make people angry.
To deny that this impact exists is to deny what writing is.
But censorship is not an option.  Censorship prevents these stories from being told, and quite frankly, no one should have the right to decide what story should and shouldn’t be told, regardless of what is in that story.
What is the solution then?  There is no easy answer.
6.  The Author’s Duty
When you put words before another human being, it becomes your responsibility as a moral individual to give your best effort into ensuring that those words have a positive impact on the individual.
This doesn’t mean not making them cry.  Or not making them upset.  It means ensuring that the morals you impart on them are sound and logical.
How one achieves this is up to you.
In general, tone makes all the difference.  Writing murder in a positive light versus writing murder in a negative light can drastically alter how the audience perceives your scene.
Empathy, too, can help sway your audience.  If your writing must involve racist police officers stopping a young black man, make sure you delve into how unfair this is, how terrifying it is, how this needs to change.  Do not normalize it.  Do not let it go by without a somber note indicating your awareness of the topic.
Sometimes, the solution is to simply avoid the issue.  There are certain topics that only some individuals should write about, and that’s just how it is.  This isn’t to say that you can’t write about it, but keep that writing private.
Most importantly, do your research, and ask for help and keep an open mind.  It’s a grave responsibility and you may not do it right and that’s okay!  Everyone is capable of learning.  Everyone is capable of changing.
7.  Echo Chambers & Lateral Thinking
An echo chamber is a phenomenon where an individual’s exposure to certain topics becomes self-enforcing because they don’t see, or actively avoid, differing opinions.
Echo chambers are also exactly what happens when a rift this massive opens in a small community.
When Orange blocks Green and starts posting about it, all of Orange’s friends decide whether they agree or not.  The overwhelming majority, due to peer pressure, will agree.  Many of them will then block Green and the users directly associated with them.  In retaliation, Green will defend themselves.  Because Orange’s group had already blocked Green, Green’s friends only seen Green’s point of view and will rise in response to the perceived slight.
What results are two heavily biased groups of users that refuse to communicate with one another and many individuals swept into the mess because they don’t wish to be isolated.
Even worse, it turns a complicated and multi-faceted issue into a binary issue.  Either you agree with Orange or you agree with Green.  The world is not this simple.
Instead, I would encourage everyone to practice lateral thinking of their own accord.  I would encourage you to make your own decisions, rather than blindly supporting or condemning the people around you.  Everyone has their own opinions about what is or isn’t okay, and that’s perfectly fine.  Even your closest friends will have different opinions than you.
8.  Accepting Differing Opinions
Once you’ve accepted these different opinions (good on you!) what do you do now?  Simply put, the choice is on you!  There’s a few options:
Quietly accept it
Respectfully debate it
Avoid it
Escalate it
The first two are pretty obvious, and the third one is where blocking people and the blacklist comes in.
The fourth one is extreme and only recommended for activities causing active, known, measurable harm to other people.
This involves actively seeking a legal entity to handle the issue.
Being mean to people on Tumblr is not a solution.  Tumblr is not a place to pursue a justice agenda.  There are bigger issues in the world, and I encourage you to find ways to make a difference that will actually be fruitful.  Donate to charities.  Extend yourself as support to victims.  Contribute to research.
Changing the mind of strangers on the internet is not a good use of your time.
9.  Good Intentions (Pave the Road To Hell)
This has been a phrase for a very long time.
What does it mean?
Well, I’ll offer my own interpretation.
It means that people often become absorbed with the idea that they are doing the right thing and forget to be mindful of the true consequences of their actions.
It doesn’t mean to not do good things.  It means that good is relative and not everyone will find your actions good.  It’s important to keep an open mind and realize that just because you think something is good, doesn’t mean everyone agrees.
10.  Being Mean is Fun (so do it in non-harmful ways)
Yeah.
It’s okay.  You can admit it.
Being mean is fun!
If it wasn’t fun, people wouldn’t do it!  In fact, this very blog was created because I found that writing the character being mean was very enjoyable and cathartic!
So, if you find yourself tempted to be mean to people in your life, maybe find another way to get those emotions out.  Hell, people on tumblr just might appreciate you taking up a nasty, villainous character that’ll tear their character up...
People love angst.  You can take this bad thing and twist it into something good.
11.  Morality (Personal, Community, and Legal)
Bringing this long post to a close, I would like you all to end by thinking about what morality really is.  In particular, I’d like you to think about morality on three different scales:  Your personal morality, the morality of the community you’re in, and morals as described by laws.
You’ll find that these morals don’t overlap.
Or, at least they shouldn’t. Please revisit section 7.
Being aware of morality in these three ways may help you determine how to proceed when going forward.
Do I personally agree with this? Does the community I’m in agree with this? Do the laws have anything to say about this?
None of these are right.  Everything has different morals, and it’s up to you to find the exact opinions that fit you.
Don’t let people blindly tell you how you should and shouldn’t feel about a topic, and don’t let people bully you into changing your morals to fit into their perceived moral high ground.
But at the same time, be open.  Extend yourself to new ideas.  If enough people tell you that something is wrong, it just may be time to listen.
Be you.
Be unique.
Be safe.
And above all, be kind.
Have a nice night, everyone.  I hope we can all work to a brighter future.

Note
I’m new to tumblr. I would like to give credit to those who post stuff. How do I do that? I just want to honor your guy’s work. Thanks!
First of all, thank you for this question! I think that a lot of people need to hear the answer.
1) DON’T STEAL CONTENT!! Now, what does that mean? Well… if YOU didn’t take the photo, THAT’S NOT YOUR CONTENT. If YOU didn’t make the gif THAT’S NOT YOUR CONTENT. If YOU didn’t record the video. THAT’S NOT YOUR CONTENT. If YOU didn’t create the artwork. THAT’S NOT YOUR CONTENT. If YOU didn’t record the video that you are making gifs of THAT’S NOT YOUR CONTENT. It doesn’t matter if you found the pic/video on another platform. IT’S STILL NOT YOUR CONTENT. ALL of these instances (and ones I didn’t name) would require credit to the original creator is reposted!
1.5) DECIDE IF YOU REALLY NEED TO POST SOMEONE ELSE’S CONTENT!! If you see a gif you like on Tumblr. REBLOG IT. That’s literally the whole point of Tumblr. There is no need to repost some else’s gifs/videos/artwork/edits if they already exist on Tumblr. USE THE REBLOG BUTTON. It still ends up on your dash all the same.
2) GIVE CREDIT IF YOU’RE POSTING OTHERS CONTENT!!! This is a long one but I will try to give as many examples as possible:
If you want to repost a picture from Instagram. Include the LINK back to the original posters Instagram account/picture. Do your research, sometimes the account that a picture is posted on is NOT the original poster. If you can’t find the original content creator. DON’T POST IT. If you really want to be nice, shoot the person a message on Instagram and ask if you can repost it. Also, see this post for more Instagram etiquette
What about photos from big sites like Getty Images or ISI (or anywhere else)? Credit the photographer and don’t remove the watermark. I cannot stress those enough. These people make their living off of taking and selling photos so give them credit where credit is due.
If you want to repost a video on Instagram, use the link posting function on Tumblr (It’s the big green circle) and link the video! That way it still get’s its views on Instagram. Also, as I said before, it never hurts to message the original creator and ask if it is okay.
Let’s say you find a video on Instagram or Youtube or any other platform that you want to make gifsets of. That’s fine, but make sure you LINK BACK TO THE ORIGINAL VIDEO!! And again, you can shoot the original content creator a message and ask if it is okay.
What if you want to create a gifset/post with other’s gifs? Remember, if you like a gif just reblog it! The first thing I would do before reposting someone’s gifs is to message and ask them! I promise you most people don’t mind, myself included. Now, if you don’t do that make sure you tag the original creator (do your research) in the post where you used the gif. NOT THE TAGS, they disappear when the post is reblogged.
Remember, never crop the watermarks or tags out of videos when reposting them. Leave them in their original form.
4) DON’T BE A DICK! I’m sure everyone messes up at some point (I definitely have), so if someone calls you out on it (hopefully respectfully) then fix your mistake! Delete the post (especially if it has a lot of notes) or add the proper credit. Keep in mind that when editing a post only the new reblogs will have the credit.
5) HOLD PEOPLE ACCOUNTABLE! Don’t reblog posts that don’t have the proper credit. Giving people notes is only enforcing the idea that they can get away with not crediting creators. Also, you can kindly message them and inform them of their mistake. Hopefully they will correct it.
tl;dr  Basically, if you’re posting something on Tumblr that isn’t 100% yours, make it obvious it is not. Make it obvious where the content came from
Sidenote: There is always a lot of gray area with stuff, and I don’t really want to get into it because it is something that you have to learn over time, but for example we don’t credit players when they post their own (meaning they took it) photos to Insta because it’s almost common knowledge where it came from. I also didn’t even get into posting content from private sources because that’s something that you should NEVER EVER EVER do! In the end, use your common sense, please.
Feel free to add anything else I didn’t cover below.

Majoritarian Privilege - A Conversation
Reblogged from Twitter: https://twitter.com/deepsealioness/status/1151253082526740480
A bunch of people on Twitter suggested that we should have a blog where they can read the extra long threads that we post in a consolidated text. So here it is folks! Thanks for all your support and likes and RTs and QTs that makes us do what we do even more fun.
This was the twitter thread and consolidated for readability.
Welcome folks to another collaborative thread between @deepsealioness and @batutaah. Our topic for today is Majoritarian Privilege. It is an important topic as unfettered Majoritarian Privilege can slide quite fast into fascism. This is what we are seeing in India and many places around the world. This is what we should all focus our fight on. As usual we speak in our own voices
What is this majoritarian privilege people keep talking about?
Tumblr media
Every human being on this planet is a minority. You might think you are in the majority - but your religion, economic and educational status, gender, sexual orientation, experiences and opinions all turn you into a unique minority of exactly one person. You might be in majority because of your religion, but in the next instant your sexual orientation can mark you out as a persecuted minority.
Conversely you might think you are in the minority, but might join a tribe of like-minded people and become the majority.
Let’s start with an explanation of what it looks like:
Let’s imagine the world as a binary of majority of coffee drinkers (Cs) and a minority of tea drinkers (Ts). The Cs always go to Starbucks and the Ts have to tag along just to give the Cs company, some also order C, some order and drink their tepid tasteless T, some don’t order anything at all. Some ask to be excused from the C expedition.
Tumblr media
After a while the Ts find another cliche of like-minded Ts and starts hanging out with them. The Cs get offended - how dare you join the enemy? We are sure you’re over there plotting the take-over of Starbucks and convert it into T-haven.
There is also a lot of C’s who start telling other C’s that the T’s are going to take over so we C’s have to unite. They keep saying ridiculous stuff about Ts like they actually add salt not sugar to beverages. Most C’s buy this explanation & think C’s uniting is only way to curb this. T’s say of course no salt but the propaganda has already spread in whatsapp
Y’all Ts are the same - say some Cs, cause my uncle was once served T when he specifically asked for C. How dare they impose T on us? We should drive the Ts out. The owner of Starbucks sees that he’s losing customers to this insane binary and offers regular tolerable T as well.
Some Cs think it is a blasphemy to mingle with Ts. Other Ts would drink poison before drinking Starbucks T and the fight goes on. Some of the Cs catch a T and force-feed him coffee. Ts can only protest at this outrage, they haven’t got the numbers to tackle Cs. Other Cs look at the Ts outraging and point it out as their inherent nature that makes them so vocal.
This is exactly what the majority do when the minority voices against oppression. The label them as extremist. How can now T be an extremist? But so many people are calling him an extremist it must be true or is it?  Sometimes T drinkers just want to say that I am a T so you have to respect me for being a T but then the Cs say that no we all drink C, you can’t talk about T, it hurts our sentiments. Ts asserting that they want to drink T becomes problematic
There are some Cs who understand what Ts are subjected to so they say #Tea4Life not because they drink T, they don’t. But when they say Ts can drink what they want but Cs even non-fanatic ones get upset over it
Other Cs dislike what the Cs are doing in the name of C and ask the Cs to desist. The other Cs turn around ask the normal Cs to go to T-Haven. Ts everywhere are now being force-fed coffee and forced to shout “Chai Starbucks”. Ts ask the normal Cs for help. The normal Cs ask the Ts to please shut up while they are trying to explain things to the Cs.
Tumblr media
Normal Cs think that it’s not my problem I don’t drink T so I don’t want to get into this. Some normal Cs also say that while Ts can drink T they shouldn’t be drinking T so openly because T is a regressive drink
The Cs are fed up with Ts complaining and tell them - “Starbucks mein rahna hoga toh Chai Starbucks kehna hoga”. They start  picketing Starbucks to even remove their tolerable T options. Starbucks obiliges, cause their owners, baristas and janitors are alls Cs.
This is how it starts & most people don’t care because this is not affecting them only the minorities are affected so when a minority tries to assert his voice saying that this is what is happening to me & is unfair then the majority start labelling them. Ts start screaming at this injustice and demand T-haven. This reinforces the Cs perception it was the Ts plan all along to victimize themselves for their beloved T-haven. They persecute the Ts even more.
This is the process of demonising minorities. Asking for justice is being judged in the same way as some of the crazy Cs have been force-feeding the Ts. The Ts have not force fed the Cs at all, they just want T
Some Ts start appeasing the Cs by drinking insipid T while shouting “Chai Starbucks”. The other Ts are not pleased and call them sarkari Ts. Cs hold the sarkari Ts as model Ts for all other Ts to emulate.
Since there are a group of Ts who are willing to accept what Cs say they are considered as a role model Ts-  because by not asserting that they want to drink T they are appeasing the Cs
Then there are the Alcohol drinkers, As who go - y’all Cs and Ts are both wrong. A is the way to go. Y’all Cs and Ts should give up and join As. Some Cs and Ts join the As and start bad-mouthing both Cs and Ts. In this way, they have equated the persecuted Ts with the oppressor Cs.
They fall into the trap that absence of dissent and peace is more important than justice.
This is actually the worst category of people than the fanatic Cs because they don’t understand what the real problem is & just want to say that I am being fair to both Cs & Ts. Their sense of neutrality is so skewed. These As are largely those who renounced C. But have kept old prejudices against Ts, now they  prefer A, but also have a nostalgia for C, they can’t see that Ts are just asking to drink T while Cs are force feeding C
Tumblr media
All of this complete BS could have been avoided if the Cs had asked Starbucks to provide tolerably tolerable T, so all Ts would not feel excluded. Ts would drink T, Cs would drink C and Starbucks would rake in the money.
Batutaah:
So let’s give a real life example of majoritarian privilege - this time from a Hindu Brahmin perspective. A friend was a teacher in Saudi Arabia and got popular with his students. Every Bakrid, the students would gift him meat (that’s what Muslims do, distribute the meat to the poor, family and friends). This poor Brahmin could not even touch it. He’d call me to come over and take the meat away from his house and presence.
So was it wrong of the students to love him and appreciate him within the context of their culture? Should he have screamed and asked them to get out of the house?
He dealt with the matter maturely and respectfully - even at the cost of having to purify the room. According to him, it made no sense explaining all this to the students as he gets a fresh batch every year and he’ll just be repeating himself over and over again. Muslims navigate their way around India in a similar way.
Let’s take a more visible example. This is a pretty common scenario in the US. You’re in BBQ country and your colleagues have invited you to a BBQ. You eat mutton, but not beef. You tell the host that you don’t eat beef. Host obliges with mutton option out of consideration for your belief. Enter Mr. X from your community who just grabs a steak and goes to town on it. Your hosts ask him why he’s eating something prohibited and he says only fools and extremists don’t eat beef.
So here, even though you have taken your time explaining your belief to your hosts, you were just undermined by someone from your group. You keep quiet cause any more complaints would prove that he’s right and you’re an extremist. This Hindu and and another Muslim became the minority BBQ partners and every time there was a BBQ one of them made sure to ask for halal mutton option at BBQs. This is how we find allies - some common goals, but not bed-partners altogether.

Muslims and other minorities are extremely self-aware of their position in Indian society and they handle this in different ways.
For example, I was watching a bollywood movie with a bunch of my Muslim friends. There’s a scene in the movie that shows a Hindu police officer offering prasad to a Muslim he’s interrogating to test if the Muslim is an extremist. I don’t remember the name of the movie or the storyline, because that scene shifted the whole focus for our group.
We asked what would any of us do in that situation. Do we eat the prasad and thereby save ourselves and our families from trouble. Insist on not eating. Try to explain. Remember that the power dynamic is severely skewed in favor of the cop. There were some who said that they’d say ‘Bismillah’ and eat it and save the trouble and God knows best. Others said it was more preferable to go to jail and God would reward them for the sacrifice. Others wanted to educate.
This is how we navigate the waters as minorities in a majoritarian stream. Just because people react differently doesn’t meant the provocation did not exist. Though we might get different reactions from the minority group - the provocation remains the same
These rather tame examples are what Majoritarianism looks like. And it is not always negative.
We can use our majoritarian privilege to be a positive force that binds people together as well - as long as we stop for a second and empathize with others.
One of my profs always took us to bars after successful project completion. After a couple of times, he realized that I was not enjoying the experience. So one day he called me to his office and gave me $50 in an envelope, apologized to me and asked me to accept the gift and enjoy it as I would deem proper. He did not ask, like others did, why I did not drink alcohol and enjoy myself for once. He did not call me a spoil-sport or try to pull me down in any way. I was bowled over by the consideration he showed me and that was one of the main reasons why I chose him as my dissertation advisor.
Deepsealioness:
My experiences have been from both sides, enjoying the majority privilege and also being a linguist minority. I will quote twitter experience as it is easier to relate. Being a majority, I don’t need to worry about being anonymous or be apologetic about my views. I won’t be labelled an extremist. I know most of my minority friends can’t do that. Sharing name becomes a risk leave alone a picture
Tumblr media
When Hindi imposition issues came up, the same people who applauded me for talking against BJP suddenly felt that my views were too extreme, I was unfair to Hindi speakers, while all I was doing was asserting myself as Tamil speaker. Just talking for my rights makes me an extremist, why? Because the majority control the narrative, when I assert, they want the power intact so they need to shut me down. I had two Hindi speakers who reached out to me and said I stand with you
I have 19k followers, even if I say I have only 1k Hindi speakers on my TL, I got support or understanding from 0.2% . Remaining went angry with me, unfollowed me, labelled me hate monger all for asserting my identity. If we truly want people to be treated equally, we need to step out of our place of comfort to understand what the issue is and where our loyalties lie. Cs like me get more bashed for standing for rights of Ts.
We don’t get any cookies with T or C for doing this, we just want to stand for what is right.
And so should you How do we do it? Not all Ts are right but if I try to understand the place Ts are coming.  I as a Cs enjoying my rights to drink C should give equal not partial or due to sympathy but truly feel that Ts have right to drink. Am no savior of Ts  by standing up for Ts, just human with empathy
Batutaah:
What @deepsealioness is saying here is very important. You can become a minority from a majority in the flip of a coin. But unless, we as a sane society, make way for a more tolerant, civilized and equitable discourse the same oppressive majority, can turn on us. Unless, we have started much earlier by developing our muscles for civility of tone and empathy towards distress, we’ll end up facing the same hostility someday.
The slide to majoritarian fascism always ends up hurting its cheerleaders the most.
John Stuart Mill was first coin “the tyranny of the majority”. His advice was that a society should decide that not even a majority can take away someone’s fundamental rights. Something India has achieved in its #Constitution and is ours to protect.

FAQ
What is Double Danganronpa: Lost Faith?
DDR:LF is a Danganronpa fanstory (Also called Fanganronpa) with 16 original characters created by @byutak, all classmates where each one of them has an ultimate talent.
The story is about said characters being forced to kill each other in order to leave the place they are trapped in; more precisely, they are trying to escape from the underwater domes.
The protagonists are Seiji Oozora and Machi Miwa, and along with everyone else, they’ll work together in order to solve the mystery that surrounds them. Who trapped them there? Why are they in that place? Only they can find the answers to these questions.
A story where everyone’s faith will be put to test; where the doubt deep inside their hearts will come to light and show who they truly are.
Is there a discord server?
Yep! the link to the discord is https://discordapp.com/invite/aSd6PN4 Feel free to join and have a chat! ^^
Where can I find this project?
Twitter: https://twitter.com/Byutaki DeviantArt: https://www.deviantart.com/byutak Main Tumblr Blog: https://byutak.tumblr.com/ DDR:LF Tumblr Blog: You’re here! Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCnzRs1oxH8pl3JSfKuN1BFA DRAmino: http://aminoapps.com/p/h0j1rs
What are the main tags in the blog?
#byu talks - Used whenever I make an announcement or talk about something (mostly important). #ask - Any asks that have been answered. #FAQ - It’s... this post. #(any character’s full name) - All the posts that contain a character, whether it’s info about them or a drawing they appear in. It goes like #Name Surname #ddrlf fanart - All the fanarts that have been reblogged here. #promo - Any post that isn’t DDR:LF related, but it’s from another fangan that I think you should also check out. #ddrlf spoilers - This won’t be used very often, but once I’ve posted a chapter, any posts that mention anything related to the latest chapter will have this tag; just so people can blacklist is until they have the time to watch it. After a week has passed from the posting date, I’ll no longer tag them.
Where can I find information about the characters of the fangan?
All the character profiles are saved in this post! (If the link doesn’t work, look for the tag “#character masterpost”).
When are you releasing a new update?
It’ll be released whenever it's ready.
Now, for the long version:
Currently, I’m the only one working in this fangan. That means I have to do everything for the time being. On top of that, things like college and social life are also in the way. I try to spend as much time as I can in each aspect of this fangan, however, being a only-one-person team takes a lot of time. In the future, I’ll make a call to fill some of these positions, making it easier for me to just focus on things like art and writing.
In which ways are we allowed to use the content of the fangan?
To be fair, I don’t have many strict restrictions regarding that! However, I’ll list what you can do.
This list might be updated in the future. If what you want to do isn’t listed below, please message me before doing anything so I can tell you if you’re allowed or not.
YOU CAN:
• Make posts/videos with your theories and thoughts about the fangan and/or the characters.
• Draw your characters interacting with the DDR:LF cast, or simply fanart of the characters.
• Translate my posts in your language (Please make sure to credit me in the post. Also send me a message to your post).
• Make AUs
• Memes
YOU CAN’T:
• Mention spoilers (At least not without a warning).
• Claim the characters as your own (Seriously, that’s gross. Don’t ever do that).
• Repost the content of the fangan (Unless I personally allowed you to. For that, you can send me a PM).
What about the drawings/sprites? Can we use them or edit them?
There’s a line that I’d like to draw here.
Things like AMVs or such videos where these are used are fine (With credit of course).
Edition of images, however, have some limits. You can’t recolor them, and much less claim that recolor as your own OC. Now, you can use the images to make an “aesthetic edit” or something like that, as long as the art is still recognizable (Again, with credit).
Can I help with the project?
If I’m recruiting new people to help with the project, you may contact me; if not, then no.
Can I give some feedback regarding something about the fangan?
Of course you can! If you’re doing it respectfully, feedback is always more than welcome ^^
However, if you’re going to give feedback, it means that you found something that seems off or wrong; not something that seems “bad”. Things like “I don’t like the design of this character” aren’t good feedback because, while everyone has their own opinions, it’s just an opinion in the end. An appropiate AND helpful feedback would be, for example, “The design of this character is a little plain. You could add something like a pattern on this side.”
Can I make a suggestion for something to happen in the next episode?
Sorry, but everything’s been set in stone. Fates, deaths, mastermind, relationships... they’ve all already been planned and I’m not going to change them. You may suggest things like “These two character don’t interact at all, can they do it in the next chapter?”, which I MIGHT consider doing since it’s not something that’ll change things, but other than that, not much can be suggested.
I hope this post helped you! If you have any other questions, feel free to send an ask!
