I literally dont know how to continue explaining to people that part of the reason Goku decided to stay dead was because Gohan hated fighting.
He didnt know this until cell. He literally had no idea. Gohan NEVER gave any indication whatsoever. Couple that with the fact Bulma pointed out most of people threatening the Earth during that point in time were all people wanting Goku. The saiyans. Frieza. The androids. Doctor Gero. Cell.
All because of Goku. Its not his fault but his very existence consistently put the Earth in danger. He truly believed Earth would be safer without him and therefore, gohan wouldnt be consistently placed into battle.
Because Goku didnt know gohan hated fighting. But once he knew came the very interwoven nature of these threats he brought making his own son fight because gohan felt he HAD to. Not because he wanted to. For goku, protecting the earth always aligned with his own love for fighting. But gohan fought out of necessity, out of the very idea that they couldnt afford to do it without him. He has this power he didnt ask for so he must use it right? Because it would be selfish if he didnt.
But goku... goku thought gohan was like him. Gohan WANTED to return to help fight vegeta. He WANTED to go to namek. He WANTED to stay and fight after piccolo almost died to frieza. Goku didnt see gohan train that first year. Didnt witness what it took to make gohan a fighter. All he saw was his son who now was strong and wanted to join the fight like his dad. And he knows gohan is more powerful than them, knows he can stop cell, FELT IT. Gohan has to defeat cell because no one else can. So he thinks if gohan gets angry enough fighting cell, itll be the answer. Because thats how its always been for goku. And in thirty seconds piccolo makes him realize he's wrong. He doesnt argue back, he listens and concedes and realizes that piccolo is right. And suddenly goku wants to abandon his plan and stop the fight. He made a mistake. He intends to get gohan out. And in the end, he still ended up being right, but it doesnt change what goku now knows. Gohan isnt like him and he doesnt enjoy fighting.
Goku would have NEVER made gohan fight if he thought he didnt want to. You know this whenever adult gohan gets involved in a fight and goku apologizes that he had to. Or when someone suggests gohan for a battle and goku is like nah he's "out of practice," even when they have time FOR PRACTICE. He never wants to force gohan into a situation like cell again. Because cell was a mistake and goku has learned from it. So he never asks Gohan to fight anymore. If Gohan wants in then of course he's in. But he wants his son to be able to choose that. He wants gohan to be HAPPY and if thats not fighting then thats perfectly alright with goku.
Tumblr media
So it wasnt just about keeping the earth safe. Or his friends. It was knowing that in the safety of gokus absence, gohan wouldnt have to fight either. There would be less threats, less chances of his son being forced into battle. And sure he also trusted that gohan and the others could keep the earth safe if they had to, but he was banking on the threat level significantly decreasing instead.
And decrease it did. They had seven whole years of peace. Not a single threat. Meanwhile from the moment Raditz shows up to gokus death to cell, it all takes place within the span of FIVE YEARS. The longest they went without a threat was the three year gap spent training for the androids. And they spent every waking moment knowing they were coming.
And then if you look at trunks future... majority of the human population being wiped out by the androids. Majority of gokus friends. His son. All dead. Because of him. Because he defeated the red ribbon army when he was a child. And that very easily could have been their future as well. So Goku does his job in preventing that. He saves all of them. And if hes the only one who ends up dead, well... it doesnt matter. Because they aren't. And he intends to keep it that way. So he stays in otherworld, to keep them safe and to give his son a future that he can choose. If Gohan has to fight, then he can. But at least his father wouldnt be the one bringing the threats to his door.

Kaioken strikes me as something that was done quite differently in the anime versus the manga, with the former going for a risky flash of power, and the later going full blown transformation, as well as insisting on stacking it with Super Saiyan forms in ways that end up ammounting to nothing...
Funnily enough, Toei doesn't get as much opportunity to play around with Kaio-ken as they might have liked. Goku uses it pretty extensively in the fights he's in between Nappa and Frieza, so they don't get much chance to bring it back in for a Playing the Hits moment.
Within the anime itself, I think that one punch he threw with Super Kaio-ken against Paikuhan is the only time he ever does one outside of the manga's rails.
Though they do get to have fun with it in the movies. World's Strongest, Tree of Might, and Lord Slug all see Goku fire up the Kaio-ken, though rarely with the degree of skill he brought to its mastery in the technique's later life.
You can really see the difference between Toriyama and Toei's creative philosophies with the Kaio-ken there, between Namek and Slug.
Tumblr media
In his training on the way to Namek, Goku focused on hardening his body to resist the Kaio-ken's effects and learning to fire it on a hair trigger.
The basic Kaio-ken is still the only form of the technique that can comfortably be sustained for a long stretch of fighting. However, that no longer matters, because he's cultivated a new way of using it that allows him to reach greater heights.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Goku already gave us a glimpse of what that looks like when he fought the Ginyus, using regular strength and ki suppression.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is different from when a suppressed character would suddenly release their ki and then the Scouter goes "FUCK NO" right in the PTO member's face. Goku arrived with 5k BP. And then he defeated Recoome with 5k BP. At no point until Ginyu arrives does he ever stop having 5k BP, and then only at Ginyu's request to see his full strength.
Burter and Jeice assume this was a fluke accident because that's the sort of conclusion you draw when you're so reliant on Scouter readouts. They saw Goku take Recoome down with their own eyes BUT THE SCOUTER SAYS
But Vegeta catches onto exactly how Goku is doing this.
Tumblr media
Goku's ki flares up in the moment he strikes and then drops back down to conserve energy. He's flickering his ki suppression so fast that the Scouter doesn't even have time to register the change.
This is not the Kaio-ken. Uh. Probably. We'll never know when he uses Kaio-ken again. But whether he was using the technique or not, he was showing us what "bursts" look like.
Every second spent in Kaio-ken when not needed is wasted stamina and durability. So he taught himself how not to waste it. Consequently, Goku can sustain a multiplier of x10 by flaring it just like this, which he does throughout the Frieza battle, without ever showing it.
It's a surprise reveal that Goku's already using KKx10 because his flickering of the technique has prevented it from being noticeable. Except to Kaio.
Tumblr media
These guys aren't present for the fight and are just spitballing ideas. Yamcha grasped at the "What about Goku's weighted gear?" straw a moment ago.
But the omniscient perspective of the audience is present, and we've seen what Goku looks like fighting. There's been no big dramatic shout of "KAIO-KEN TIMES ABOOBUHBLOO!" He has a battle aura at times, but that by itself isn't enough to indicate Kaio-ken.
Tumblr media
And yet this is probably Goku x10 getting kicked in the face.
This reveal took Toei by surprise as much as it did the audience. "Wait, was this Kaio-ken?" is a much easier thing to sell in the black and white color scheme of the manga. The one guy who said Goku hasn't been using Kaio-ken isn't present to watch the fight, so it's entirely possible that he's been visibly flaring red with every burst.
Piccolo, Gohan, and Krillin never get tripped up by this the way Ten does. And, y'know, they sense ki so they're probably feeling each flareup.
The halcyon days of Goku roaring with Kaio-ken and suddenly burning with its power are gone; He's beyond it. He's internalized KKx10 as a natural part of his motions, like moving his wrist in a certain way when throwing a punch.
Except when he panics and goes to x20 out of pure desperation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A tragic and costly mistake that, much like with Vegeta, leaves Goku extremely vulnerable and unable to continue defending himself.
It's hard to say what Goku should or should not do, as Frieza truly is an incomprehensible menace. He's exactly what Kaio warned about when he freaked out on Goku about "ABSOLUTELY NOT! UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES! DO NOT FUCK WITH FRIEZA!"
But he probably shouldn't have done that. Goku actually managed to do some damage to Frieza with that, to be sure.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We see Frieza scuffed and bleeding. But he blew out his body doing it.
Tumblr media
Much like with KKx4 against Vegeta, KKx20 hit Goku a lot harder than it did Frieza. He probably would have been better off keeping to the KKx10 bursts.
And then we have Lord Slug. The movie that tried to steal the thunder of Goku's Super Saiyan transformation by hitting theaters right before Goku's transformation in the manga and having him go Super Saiyan first. Or. Uh. Trying to, at least.
This is all very complicated and intricate, and conveys a technique that's simple in nature and yet complex to master. Goku has pushed the Kaio-ken far beyond what even its creator ever imagined, because that's what Goku does. He is a martial arts master.
This is the sort of stuff you think about when you're writing for Goku as a writer.
Toei or, more specifically, the people making the anime, don't think about the story like writers, however. They think about it like animators. Because they're animators. Their job is to animate. This is where a lot of the disconnection between manga and anime comes from, as Toei tends to pay more attention to what will be cool to animate over narrative consistency or storytelling.
The movie Lord Slug also pushes the Kaio-ken to new heights with. Um.
...
Whatever this is.
Tumblr media
Piccolo gives Goku his ki, and Goku flares up into the Kaio-ken.
Tumblr media
And then Goku's KK aura burns with the fiery visages of Goku and Piccolo himself working together as bros.
Tumblr media
Which makes him vastly more powerful. Originally, this was intended to be Kaio-ken x100 and in fact you still see that number passed around in supplementals and shit. It's in the Japanese trailer for the film but they took it out of the official release.
And then Goku hits Slug really super hard with the power of the ultimate Kaio-ken for a Piccolo-Daimao Playing the Hits moment.
Tumblr media
It looks super cool, was probably a ton of fun to animate, and works perfectly with no drawbacks of any kind.
But it's also. Y'know. Kinda dumb, with no explanation given for why Piccolo's ki suddenly allows Goku to hit KKx100.
Which may be why they took Goku shouting "x100!" out of the official release, but then we're left with the basic Kaio-ken one-shotting Slug, when before he got serious he was merely being pressured by the Super Saiyan Kinda. Goku needs the x100 multiplier for this moment to work. But also. That's ridiculous.
Looks fucking cool, though. Great animation, Toei.

Date Night
Goku worried he was in trouble when he walked into his home and didn't smell food coming from the kitchen. It was dinner time but the lights were off in the kitchen, the table was empty of food and the stove was cold. Searching for Ki around the house, Goku felt only Chichi’s. Gohan and Goten, he felt, were at Gyumao's home. "Uh-oh." Chichi would kick the boys out if she was so angry with him she didn't want her sons to see her yell at him..... Or she had a night of intimacy planned! That had to be it! Goku knew he didn't do anything wrong. He worked all week. All right he worked three days and spent two days training but he was on the farm.
“I’m not in trouble.” Goku put his lunch cooler on the table and rubbed his hungry stomach. Goku didn’t mind Chichi wanted intimacy but couldn't they eat first? He was starving! "Chichi?" Goku called for his wife as he headed to their bedroom. Maybe I can talk Chichi into cooking something before we get down to business. But as he entered his bedroom, Goku realized Chichi wasn’t planning a night of intimacy. Oh, this is bad. There was a suit hanging on the closet door. One of Chichi’s fancy dresses hung next to it. His wife was in the bathroom showering. It was Date Night.
Escape! Escape his mind told him. Go to Vegeta for a spar. Go to Piccolo for a spar. Go to the moon! Just anywhere as long as he can escape Date Night! He put his fingers to his forehead searching for the first ki to pop up. "Goku, if you leave, I won't cook for you for a week!" Dammit. His weakness. He couldn’t say no to that. Not again. He dared Chichi once. Goku was confident Chichi wouldn't withhold food from him but Chichi did and Goku found himself sitting at the dinner table as his sons ate. Gohan looked regretful as he ate Goku’s portion of dinner but Goten was smug as he happily ate his Daddy’s food. Never again Goku vowed. Goku lowered his fingers. "How did you know?" Chichi opened the bathroom door. Her hair was wet and her wet body soaked through the towel wrapped around her. It was as if she jumped out of the shower to stop him. "I know you." Chichi adjusted her slipping towel. “Is going out with me that unbearable?”
“No.” Goku didn’t want Chichi to think he hated going out with her. “I don't hate Date Night, Chichi, but I hate wearing suits.”
“It’s only for one night, Goku. I’m not asking you to save the world.”
“That’ll be easier.”
“Please,” Chichi pleaded. “We don’t have many nights alone.”
“Don’t you let me know about this earlier?” It wasn’t like Chichi to drop Date Night on him all of a sudden. She always told him two days before, the night before and the morning of so he doesn’t forget and come home early to prepare. This always allowed Goku to find a reason to delay coming home and get out of Date Night.
Chichi’d get upset and yell at him for ignoring her reminders but by morning, Chichi was over it. This time, Chichi wasn’t upset with him. She looked disappointed and that always ate at him.
“It was Dad who made dinner plans for us. He came over for lunch and thought we deserved a night alone and offered to watch our sons tonight.”
“Oh.” Goku looked over at the dresser and noticed the fresh bouquet of red roses in a vase. “That explains who gave you that.” He noticed a white box next to the vase. “What’s in there?”
“Pearl earrings.”
Goku’s eyes widened horrified. “Is it your birthday? Is it our anniversary?” Goku panicked. It couldn’t be one of those! At least he didn’t think so. Gohan and Goten always reminded him.
Chichi squeezed the bridge between her nose. Her sigh was a woman at her wits’ end. “Sometimes, Goku, the people you love gift you things because they want to and not because it’s a special day. Sometimes they plan things and want to be with you because they love you.”
Oooh, Chichi got him good stabbing him in the heart with that one. “Sorry. I’ll take a shower and…..I hate suits, Chichi,” he complained again. “It’s not you.”
“I hate you’re the one everyone turns to when the world is in danger. I hate when the world is celebrating victory, I am wondering if my husband is coming home. It’s not you or your love for fighting.”
Chichi twisted the knife and pulled his heart out with that one.
Defeated, Goku went into the shower. As the hot water ran down his body, Goku thought of Chichi. All Chichi wanted was to spend time with him. Goku liked spending time with Chichi, too. Date Nights weren’t always dinners, movies or concerts with him in fancy suits. Sometimes it was them doing things together. He remembered visiting a farm and picking fruit with ChiChi. He remembered going to an amusement park. They even hiked the mountains on Mount Paozu. When it was only them, Goku and Chichi did active things together and Goku loved that.
After they had children, Chichi relegated Date Night to having private dinners, going dancing, and attending movies or concerts. Chichi’s excuse was wanting to relax after spending all day with an active baby and husband.
It’s only one night Goku told himself. The restaurants he and Chichi ate at always had good food. So what if he had to wear a stuffy suit? It’s gonna constrict me all night. But Chichi will smile and thank him for giving her this night. It was worth it to see her smile.
Goku was in a better mood about Date Night when he stepped into the bedroom naked and fresh from his shower. He put on his clothes as Chichi finished preparing herself. She wore a figure-hugging dress. It was black, sleek and whoa! Goku noticed the side slit went all the way up her left thigh and when she walked across the room to her vanity table, he saw teases of her beautiful lithe leg.
“That’s a fancy dress. Did your Dad get you that?”
“No. I bought this myself.” Chichi brushed her hair in front of the mirror. “I was shopping with 18 and saw this on a mannequin. I kept staring at it that 18 encouraged me to try it on. It looked good on me and it’s out of my normal price range but something in me told me to get it. Somedays you see something you want and you have to have it.”
“Hmm,” Goku murmured approvingly. He had his pants, shirt and tie on. All he needed was his jacket but Goku couldn’t take his eyes off Chichi in her dress. It did look good on her.  It accentuated her figure lovingly. The cleavage of her breasts drew more attention to assets he lovingly used as pillows some nights. The long slit teasing her leg reminded Goku of how tightly that leg would wrap around his waist as he drove himself in and out of her when they made love. Her hips looked prominent enough for him to grab and give a good rub or smack.
I want that now.
And Goku suddenly had a way out of Date Night.
Chichi wasn’t aware of Goku’s thoughts as she put on her earrings and makeup. She was glad Goku wasn’t arguing against Date Night anymore. As she wiped red lipstick on her lower lip, Chichi noticed Goku in the mirror. He was dressed but what concerned her was Goku’s eyes and where they were staring and that smile. That smile always meant trouble... for her. "Why are you looking at me like that, Goku?" "You think I'm looking at you?" Chichi wasn’t fooled by that innocent voice. Not with his eyes glued to her butt and that smile that said, "I wanna smash those cheeks". "You're staring at my butt." "You're sticking it out. You're asking me to look." "I am not!" "Can't help it." Goku stepped forward to rub his hips against Chichi’s. "You know I love your body." Chichi closed her lipstick case and smacked her lips together. "Love it later. Don't-- hey!" Goku's hands massaged her breasts. “No bra.” He noticed how quickly Chichi’s nipples poked through her dress. “Good.” That was one less article of clothing he had to pull off to get to what he wanted. He pulled Chichi’s dress open exposing most of her breasts and skin down to her stomach. "Ya know I can't control myself when I want ya, Chichi." Chichi couldn’t suppress her moan as she felt prodded from behind by Goku’s erection while her neck was being nibbled on and her breasts massaged. He acted innocent but her husband knew how to get her body excited. "Save it for after dinner." Silly woman Goku thought as he pushed Chichi’s dress until it pooled at her feet. Didn't she understand? She was dinner.
“Can’t.” His hand slid between the slit. He could feel the lace barrier protecting itself from his invading hand. “Gotta have you now.”
Goku turned Chichi around and crushed his lips to hers with his tongue immediately pushing deep and hard into her mouth. Chichi purred a deep sound as she felt Goku’s erection press against her thighs. Chichi’s nails bit into his shoulders as she ground herself against him. Goku groaned a sound of victory in his throat as he felt Chichi’s fingers unbutton his shirt.
Goku helped Chichi undress him. He held back his smirk when his clothes joined Chichi’s on the floor and he caught the lust in her eyes at the sight of his chest. It was always broad and rippled with muscles. He loved how quickly she wet her lips when she saw what hung between his legs. When he undressed before her, it was always as if he was unveiling a new gift to her.
Chichi’s hips bumped against her vanity table when Goku pushed her against it and began a trail of kisses from her neck to her mouth and left Chichi basking in the feel of his hard body against hers teasing as his thick and rigid shaft brushed against her stomach.
“Ah,” Chichi jumped as she felt Goku’s hot fingers brushing against her intimate curls. When he illuminated his hand in her most intimate spot, Chichi couldn’t resist him. Her hips rocked slightly at his touch and urged him to go deeper.
“Isn’t this better than us in stuffy clothes?”
Even whispering, Goku possessed the most sensual voice; a deep, rich baritone, that when his breath fanned her ear and sent vivid images of them tangling with the sheets, it immediately caused Chichi to lubricate his fingers.
“Yes,” she cried out as his fingers tormented her between her legs, stroking her up and down. “Ah,” she whimpered as Goku suckled a nipple. She groaned and arched her back as in and out his fingers moved, stretching her, moving deeper and thrusting faster as she clenched him, eager to have his cock in her over and over until a familiar scream broke free as a powerful sensation ripped through her.
Chichi’s orgasm came upon her faster than she expected. It still hummed in her when Goku grabbed her hips and lifted her. She secured her hands around his neck as her legs dangled over his arms while her feet, still covered in her shoes, gently slapped Goku’s thighs as Goku pulled her down onto his cock, filling all of him deep in her.
“Ngh!” Goku couldn’t hold back his groan at the pleasurable union. So warm. So wet. So damn good. “It always feels so good in ya.” He pulled Chichi up and pulled her back down always amazed at the exciting feeling of their flesh slapping together.
Chichi sounded drugged with passion as Goku moved deeper with his lifting and pulling her down onto his penis brutally pounding into her body with swift speed and urgency as the sloshing of his coated cock thrusting in Chichi grew louder and the slapping of their bodies got faster until Chichi reached another climax. As a moan tore from deep within her and her walls clamped his cock, a bestial roar came out of Goku as he exploded into Chichi with his copious, thick cream filling her welcoming body.
Chichi rested her head against Goku’s shoulder. She breathed in and out hard as her body tingled with satisfaction. “That was amazing.”
Goku grinned. “I know.” Chichi looked so relaxed. She wouldn’t want to go out now.
“How do you know my body so well?”
Goku’s hands settled on her hips. He squeezed them before pulling Chichi against him. “Because it’s mine.”
“You spoil me when you love me, Goku.”
“I know,” Goku cockily agreed. “But you deserve it.” Mainly because it got him out of Date Night. After loving Chichi, she’ll either want another performance, cuddle or sleep. Goku didn’t mind except he was hungry. If he can wear Chichi out, then he can slip away to raid the kitchen or leave the house and hunt for dinner.
But before Goku could contemplate on any more options, Chichi pressed a kiss to Goku’s shoulder and slowly moved to his left breast for more kisses before moving across his chest to the other breast where she gave it the same treatment. “Do you know what I want to do now?”
Goku watched Chichi’s fingers glide over his smooth muscles; saw her lips press kisses missed by her hands as she descended. He felt himself growing hard again as Chichi kissed down his stomach. “I have an idea.”
Chichi deliberately ignored the organ where he wanted her mouth and kissed his thighs teasing him all around him there. Her mouth hovered over his jutting cock with a pearl of his cream at the tip. Chichi gave it a lick and just as he expected Chichi to pull him into her mouth, she grabbed her dress and his clothes off the floor and stood.
“Have dinner at the restaurant.” Chichi tossed Goku his clothes and walked towards the bathroom. “Get dressed.”
“What?!” His plan didn’t work! Chichi still wanted to go out. She never did this before. “But…..but….” he struggled. “I just ate.”
“I haven’t.”
Chichi slammed the bathroom door and left Goku wondering if he was losing his touch with his wife.
****
Three chefs and three waiters were called in to help with the service for the restaurant that night. When Gyumao made the reservations, he mentioned his son-in-law would be coming which made the restaurant manager relive nightmares of Goku’s past visits. It boggled his mind how someone as athletic-looking as Son Goku ate as much as he did.
“Oh, no….” Maddox, one of three waiters who will serve Goku and Chichi nearly turned white as a ghost when he saw Goku walking in. “He is alive. I thought he was dead. I thought I was free from serving this man again.”
“At least they tip good,” the second waiter, Ray, encouraged his friend to think positive. “I paid my electric bill from the last tip I got when she came in with her sons.”
“What’s the matter with you?” the third waiter wondered what was wrong with his coworkers. He was younger and had only been on the job for three months. So far, he hadn’t served the Son Family but he heard stories and always thought they were exaggerated. “They are a normal couple coming to eat.”
The other two waiters shook their heads at the rookie.
“Hi,” the rookie, Devyn, introduced himself. He and the other two waiters walked Goku and Chichi to the table reserved for them. It was the largest in the restaurant. Devyn couldn’t understand why Goku and Chichi had to sit here. They were both slender and didn’t look as if they would eat more than one serving of food. He handed Goku and Chichi their menus, left and returned with a bread basket and water.  “Are you ready to order?”
Devyn took down Chichi’s order first. She had a salad, a hot and cold appetizer, two dinner items which seemed a lot to Devyn, and one dessert item. “And you, Sir?”
“One of everything.”
“Everything what, Sir?”
Goku pointed at his menu. “One of everything here,” Goku pointed at all the hot and cold appetizers. “And here,” he pointed at the signature, entrée and dinner selections. “No dessert.” Goku closed the menu. “I’m not a big fan of sweets.”
Devyn’s eyes widened. “On the menu?” Goku nodded. “Sir……” Devyn was sure he heard wrong. “That’s a lot.”
“Not really,” Goku didn’t think so. “Chichi said I can’t go overboard with dinner but I haven’t eaten since lunch and me and Chichi had sex before we came here so I’m starvin’!”
“Goku!” Chichi flushed at Goku’s blabbing. “Don’t tell him that.”
“But he doesn’t understand why I’m hungry.”
Chichi snatched the menu from Goku. “He doesn’t need to know that.” She handed hers and Goku’s menu back to the waiter. “Thank you and could you bring another bread basket for my husband and a pitcher of water for us, please?”
“Uhh…” Devyn still couldn’t get over Goku ordered everything on the menu except dessert.
“Understood, Ma’am,” Maddox complied and pulled Devyn away with him.
Two chefs were veterans of Goku’s orders and were already working on Goku’s order when the official order came in. Goku received the first wave of his order before Chichi got her food. Hers came when the second wave of Goku’s food arrived.
“Date Night isn’t so bad now is it?” Chichi asked as she slurped her Udon soup. She couldn’t stop smiling at Goku ravenously eating. Maybe it was the seven years, but she had a fondness for watching Goku eat. She missed this so much.
Goku swallowed a large bite of dinosaur meat mixed with rice. “Not when we eat this good.” He almost choked but the food was too good to slow down on.
“I hope you like the company and the food.”
Goku looked around and noticed a few people staring at them. “Company is fine. I don’t why they are staring. Haven’t they seen people eat?”
“People, yes. You, no.” Chichi teased her husband. “I mean my company.”
“I always like your company, Chichi.”
“Sometimes it doesn’t feel like that,” Chichi murmured as she switched to eating her salad. She wouldn’t be down tonight. She wanted to be positive. “When we were driving in, we passed a dance club. There was a sign outside that said ‘Ballroom Night’. We should go there after dinner. I don’t know the moves the kids do today but we can waltz like we did at our wedding.”
Dinner wearing stuffy suits Goku could tolerate but did they have to dance? “Do we have to?” Goku whined. “I forgot a lot of steps.”
“You’ll remember once we dance again. I know it.” Goku didn’t look enthused with the idea. Maybe I’m pushing for too much. “These shoes are tight. My feet might swell if we dance.”
Goku was happy to hear that. “Well, then we shouldn’t go.”
“No,” Chichi sadly agreed. “I guess not.”
“Chichi, is that you?”
Chichi looked in the direction where her name was called. She saw a woman with dark, curly hair walking to the table. “Anya?” Chichi stared before she jumped from her seat and hugged the woman. “Anya! Oh, it’s so good to see you! How long has it been?”
“I think ten years.” Anya embraced Chichi. “I haven’t seen you since Pa’s funeral. Ma’s been gone for twelve years and after Pa died, I didn’t feel a need to return to the village.”
“But you’re here now,” Chichi told her. “Or in the vicinity.” This was the closest big city near Mount Paozu and her father’s kingdom. Whenever Chichi came here with her family, she often saw people from her village dining.
Anya waved a man over. “I wanted to show Nate where I come from. We’ll be in your Dad’s village for a day to visit my parents’ graves.”
“Nate?” Chichi inquired curiously at the tall and dark-haired man approaching them. “Who is Nate?” More importantly, where was Anya’s husband, Quinn?
“Quinn and I divorced, Chichi. I finally had enough.”
“Oh. I’m sorry.” Chichi wasn’t privy to all the news from her father’s kingdom but she thought she’d hear about Anya and Quinn’s divorce. But as Anya said, she hadn’t been back home in years.
“Don’t be. I wasted too many years on that man. You were right, Chichi. Quinn married me because our parents arranged our marriage. I tried. I really did but Quinn never loved me. I thought having kids would change things but it didn’t. Then Ma and Pa died and I realized I was with a man who would never love me. I didn’t know what to do but we talked after Pa’s funeral. You told me I deserved to be happy and I shouldn’t stay in a situation where I wasn’t happy. So, I divorced Quinn. It was hard,” Anya admitted with a frustrated sigh. “I wanted a divorce from Quinn but he wanted a divorce from everyone. I raised our children alone.”
“You could’ve come back. Dad’s village would’ve taken care of you.”
Anya snorted. “And deal with the whispers?” Anya shook her head dismissing that. “How many divorced people are in that village?”
“Hmm.” Chichi couldn’t deny Anya’s point. “Good point.” Divorce was unheard of among her father’s people. “So, what have you been doing?”
“I inherited some money from Pa after he died. That got me a new home in North City. I worked as a housekeeper and cook while I went to school. I got a teaching job and,” she smiled at Nate, “met a man who dropped his nephew off and I have been happy ever since.” She flashed her wedding ring at Chichi. “Very happy.”
“Oh, Anya, that’s wonderful.”
“All thanks to you, Chichi.”
“I…’Chichi put a hand on the side of her head stumped. “I don’t remember saying anything to encourage you to divorce.”
“You didn’t say those exact words. You told me I should be happy and I knew I couldn’t be with Quinn. I think you were going through a rough time with Goku but I guess that passed because you two are still together.” Anya shook her head amused at Goku still eating. “Every time I saw you, Goku, you had food in your mouth. You haven’t changed. Well, I hope you have. You were almost as bad as Quinn.”
The food nearly fell out of Goku’s mouth. “Hmm?”
“Oh, Goku’s not like Quinn,” Chichi quickly defended Goku. “We’ve had some rough times but things are great now. We have two wonderful boys.”
Anya was happy to hear that. “I’m glad. Nate and I have to go but maybe we can have lunch before Nate and I go back home?”
“I’d like that.” Chichi embraced Anya again, shook Nate’s hand and watched them leave. “That was a nice surprise.” Chichi sat back down. “Anya looks so happy. I’m glad for her.”
Goku wasn’t sure if he should be. “I don’t remember her. Who is she?”
“A girl I grew up with. She married before we did and never seemed happy with Quinn. I never thought he appreciated her. He always left her alone even with three kids.” Chichi chewed her karaage when she snapped her fingers. “Oh, I know what she meant. It must have been that talk I had after you came back from Yardrat.”
That wasn’t good. Goku slowly chewed his boar meat. Chichi was really angry with him then. “What talk?”
Chichi smiled at her husband. “Finish your meal, Goku.” She dismissed his question and tilted her head to the staff. “They have to clean up all these dishes.”
“Oh.” Goku looked at the pile of empty dishes being taken away by Devyn, Maddox and Ray. “He had some food left but what Chichi said on what caused her advice to Anya had Goku wanting more food. “Can I have another helping of this?” Maddox and Ray groaned while Devyn only had enough energy to place the dishes back on the table before fainting.
****
“You’re quiet,” Chichi observed Goku as he drove them home. Too quiet Chichi thought. Something was on his mind. Something bothered him.
“I’m full.” Goku kept his eyes on the road. “I’m always quiet when I am full.”
“You’re quiet and happy when you’re full. You’re quiet and sullen now.”
Goku couldn’t help himself after hearing what Anya said to Chichi. He ate his dinner but his appetite was ruined. He couldn’t keep it in him any longer. He had to know. “Did you wanna leave me, Chichi?”
“Excuse me?”
“Did you wanna leave me?” Goku repeated. “You told Anya to leave her husband. Did you say that because you wanted to leave me?”
So, that was bothering him. She had a suspicion but thought she was wrong. “I was mad with you then.” It wasn’t a secret. Anyone around them could feel the tension between Goku and Chichi when Goku returned from Yardrat. “I felt connected with Anya and her problems so I told her what she should do.”
“Then you wanted to leave me.” Goku frowned. Did he screw up that bad? Chichi was mad at him when he came back. He refused Porunga’s wish and delayed telling her what happened when he was away. He knew he hurt her then. He was absentminded and selfish over many things then but he never thought he pushed Chichi to consider leaving him.
“I didn’t want to leave you, Goku. I felt you wanted to leave me. You changed, Goku. You weren’t the man I lived with for five years. You came back and sometimes I felt I was living with a stranger. I wasn’t living with the man who opened up to me about his Grandpa’s death. I wasn’t living with the man who wanted to provide for me and our son. The difference between me and Anya is that I still love you despite that. I was angry and hurt by your absence… your distance… how you seem to want to be around Gohan and Piccolo more than me.”
“I didn’t think like that!”
“I know.” And that took a while for Chichi to see that. “It felt like that then. I said what I said because Anya was no longer in love with Quinn. I was still in love with you and I wanted to work it out. I knew there was hope for us. Anya didn’t have that with Quinn.”
That was a dark time for them. He was distant and held Chichi at arm’s length. He didn’t realize how much he put Chichi through until he was at death’s door with the virus. “I could’ve been better then.”
“I know.” Chichi gave his thigh a gentle squeeze. “We both could’ve, but we’re passed that, Goku. I’m happy with you. I understand you now and I love you. I don’t want to be with anyone else. I’m not going anywhere.”
Me neither. I’ll only want you, Chichi.
Goku knew he didn’t show that a lot but he meant it. He’ll only want Chichi.
And he needed to show that more.
Goku drove the car off the road. He drove into a field of grass and put the car in park. This confused Chichi. “Goku, what are you doing?”
Goku played with the dials on the radio. Chichi had some stations preset. He turned to the fourth one. Chichi set that to a radio station that played love songs. He turned the volume up as a soft melody played.
My love must be a kind of blind love
I can’t see anyone but you
Goku stepped out of the car and walked over to Chichi’s side. His wife looked at him confused as he opened the door and held his hand out to her. “I owe you a dance.”
Happy tears gathered at the corner of Chichi’s eyes as she took Goku’s hand and allowed him to pull her out of the car. Chichi leaned against Goku’s chest as his hand settled around her waist. Slowly, they waltz to the song professing forever love. It had been years since they’d danced. The last time was under a sense of dread as the Cell Game loomed over them. Now it felt like new beginnings blossoming between them. “You haven’t missed a step. You’re still good.”
Chichi’s words jinxed Goku for she felt a foot press on hers. “I spoke too soon,” she giggled. Ah, she didn’t care. Goku could step on her toes throughout the entire song. It was worth it being in his arms, knowing he wanted to dance with her, knowing he only wanted and would never leave her.
“Wanna see how Saiyans dance?”
Oh, dear. What could that be Chichi wondered with a laugh. “Saiyans have a particular dance?”
“Oh, yeah and it’s much better than how it’s done on Earth.”
He had something playful in mind. Chichi could see it on his face. “Then show me.”
Chichi’s heart jumped as she felt Goku pull them off the ground. She looked down to see the car getting smaller as they floated higher in the sky, above the trees and into the clouds where the full moon shined like a beacon in the sky.
“Well?” Goku effortlessly held Chichi with his hand as he spun Chichi in a twirl. He marveled at how Chichi effortlessly floated in the sky. It was as if she belonged here with him. He always thought she looked so pretty when she was in the sky with him by Nimbus or in his arms under the sun or the moon.
The moon may be high
But I can’t see a thing in the sky
I only have eyes for you
Chichi wrapped her arms around Goku’s neck as they floated in front of the moon. “I think I like the Saiyan way of dancing better. Thank you,” she kissed him. “I’ll treasure this night forever, Goku.”
Goku wasn’t going to forget this night either. “I’ll do better with Date Night, Chichi,” Goku promised.
“Maybe we mix in some active dates," Chichi suggested. "We did do a lot of them when we were younger." Before Goku, could say it, Chichi stopped him. "I don't mean bedroom gymnastics."
Goku playfully pouted. "Those are my favorites with you, Chichi, but I know what you mean." Goku seriously sobered his words. “I won’t try to get out of Date Night again.”
"Hmm…” Chichi pulled Goku's lips to hers as the light of the full moon shined on them. “That’s all I want.”

CELL/PICCOLO/FREEZA: HEADCANONS.
Falling in love with Goku's older sister.
FREEZA
Tumblr media
- You were exhausted, your friends were worried, even Goku, your little brother, while fighting with the Ginyu Force in Namek.
- Goku decided that he was going to fight the Ginyu Force for you take a time to rest.
- But Freeza didn't let that happen, so he went to fight you.
- Of course, he was stronger than you and beat the shit out of you, not only because you were not strong enough, but you didn't had a Senzu Bean, so you're pretty tired.
- Freeza was planning on killing you, but for some reason he couldn't, so he decided to keep you alive.
- He somehow got attached to you, planning to bring you with him after killing Goku and his friends.
- He failed.
- In Hell, Freeza tried to ignore the cute creatures and fairies that were annoying him, with your image on his mind.
- After Killing Krillin, Goku managed to transform into a Super Saiyan thanks to his anger.
- Because even if he were younger than you, Goku is a overprotective brother.
- And he knew... That he was in love with his enemy's sister.
CELL
Tumblr media
- He was bored.
- After announcing an Tournament, Cell was starting in the middle of the ring with his arms crossed.
- After he absorbed a lot of people and the androids, he got to get his Perfect Form.
- Goku were training with his friends, looking forward to get stronger to defeat Cell.
- Arriving at the tournament, Goku was the first to fight Cell.
- You were watching the fight, anxious about how it was going to end.
- When Goku said that he gave up, you were really confused, only to get your eyes widened when he told to Gohan fight.
- Everyone there was shocked, even Cell.
- You yelled at him when he gave a Senzu Bean to Cell, telling how crazy he was and that Gohan can't fight someone who was stronger than him.
- You were so scared for Gohan, watching Cell beating him was so cruel and Goku didn't even do anything.
- After hearing Gohan yelling of pain when Cell gave him a "hug", you snapped and punched the enemy on the face, making him let go of Gohan.
- Cell was admired of your strength, he smirked, staring at your angry expression.
- Before fighting Cell, you told Gohan to leave and help everyone defeat the Mini Cells.
- While battling you, Cell was impressed by your strength and determination, loving the way your fight to protect the ones you loved.
- And the moment you were almost dying because of being defeated, he only pushes you away from the fight.
- "You are an interesting woman, maybe after this battle, I'll keep you to myself."
- Slightly confused, you watched him leaving the place, continuing to fight Gohan.
- He knew that that girl was the one for him.
PICCOLO
Tumblr media
- Gohan was busy, Videl was busy, Goku was training with Whis at his planet.
- So the only one who could take care of Pan was Piccolo and You.
- Indeed, you liked to train, but love having time with yourself or some friends too.
- So when you got to Know that Piccolo were taking care of Pan alone, you decided to help.
- You have meet Piccolo when you came to earth with Raditz, to find your brother, Goku.
- When you got to know that you were a aunt, you got so happy.
- But you didn't liked the way Raditz treated your brother and nephew, so you decided to help them killing Raditz, even if you didn't want to.
- After some years, you helped Piccolo to take care of Gohan on his training days.
- Somehow, Piccolo got attached to you, even though he didn't liked to admit it.
- So after Gohan and Videl were married, you always find some time to help him take care of Pan.
- He watches you playing with the newborn baby, making cute faces and holding toys for her.
- It was a new feeling for him, he never thought that he was starting to fall in love with Goku's sister.
- But he knew, that maybe he could have a chance with her, meditating together, taking care of Pan together.
- He would protect her all the time, be with her all the time, but he would never know how to confess because he didn't knew what to say.
A/N: That's all for today, sorry if there's any mistakes.

Okay yknow what, i get to make a rant post about Dragon Ball. I absolutely DESPISE the conception that Goku is a bad dad. The main sticking point is the Cell Games, and how Goku gave Cell a senzu bean and forced Gohan to fight. but like. that was THE ONLY OPTION at that point. Goku knows "fuck, i aint strong enough to win this. But I know Gohan is. I know the strength he has, and I know that the only way to unlock his power is through rage and desperation" it may seem dumb, but Goku is a fighter, the man knows strategy in his fights, and strategically, Goku knows Gohan is stronger than him, he's seen how Gohan was able to stand up to second form frieza due to his rage, he knows that both he and Vegeta evolved to Super Saiyans due to rage and desperation, that it was their one chance. Goku had to make the situation more dire to make an explosive response.
and heres the thing, the Cell Saga also makes a good case that Goku does know and care about Gohan, he spent a full year straight isolated with him, he spent every day bonding and connecting with him. And fighting and training is genuinely one of Goku's ways of showing him caring, think about his relationship to all his friends, and his wife, who he literally met through fighting. And when push came to shove, Goku was willing to sacrifice himself to protect Gohan. And that's not even the first time he did. He was willing to sacrifice himself on planet Namek so that Gohan could survive. He let Piccolo kill him so that he could save Gohan from Raditz.
And then, after the dust settled, he realized that he invited all this fighting and pain into Gohan's life, since Raditz came to earth for Goku, Vegeta and Nappa came to earth for Goku, Frieza came to earth because of Goku, the androids and cell exist because of Goku. He knew the best option was to stay dead and let Gohan enjoy a life of peace. and for 7 years, there was peace. outside of *maybe* Bojack and Broly, who once again, when needed, Goku literally jumped out of the afterlife to help Gohan fight both Bojack and Broly (and Cell too).
And if you think Goku staying dead was selfish, and that he shouldve come back , literally the MOMENT Goku was resurrected for 1 day, an ancient battle of Gods and Demons dragged Gohan's life back to fighting, forcing him to awaken his inner strength and fight a god-killing demon. And in GT we saw that overuse of the Dragonballs to revive people was Bad to say the least. And as soon as Goku comes back to life, what does he do? He becomes a good grandfather to Pan, and spends his time with Goten, working together on a farm. Clearly, the man wants to spend time with his family, it just so happens he keeps dying for them and ends up trapped fighting deathmatches when he is alive.
TLDR :Basically, Toyotaro. I know that picture of Xicor on your desk is beckoning you like the Green Goblin mask. Bring in Xicor to the canon and let Goku be a good dad to Goten and Xicor in Super, and let him be a good grandpa for Pan.

DBS Super Hero Reaction
I finally watched Dragon Ball Super Hero. Here’s my thoughts.
Tumblr media
I think it’s weird that in a movie with the term “Super Hero” in the title, that LOVES to make overt references to the past, we don’t get any mention of Great Saiyaman 1 / 2. Of course, it’s all an allusion to Gamma 1 / 2 as Tokosatsu-style heroes.
Honestly, it’s really fun to see Magenta POV from the outside looking in and telling us what some people THINK is going on with Capsule Corp. I imagine he put this together from the scraps of information that he could glean from Dr. Gero’s observations. It does track.
Tumblr media
People know about Nappa and Vegeta arriving. The Saiyan’s pod ended up at CC. And it would be easy for people to spot the Namekians living in Capsule Corp. So, you could conclude that Bulma is getting access to Alien Tech. But, Magenta also assumes that the Capsule technology is rooted in alien tech. As far as we know, it isn’t. And then Magenta jumps to the conclusion that CC is paving the way for an alien invasion… without evidence.
Obviously, Magenta is biased. Being a military organization, everything looks like a battle. He can’t contemplate that the Saiyans and Namekians are essentially refugees, and CC is just being philanthropic.
Overall, the movie is just fun! It has those original Dragonaball references for old fans like me, and the Tokusatsu stuff for the younger audience (in Japan). They are being cheeky with the Goku and Vegeta stuff. Whis forces them to fight without transforming because they had no idea what was happening in the manga. (They made this movie in the middle of the Granola arc, even though it takes place AFTER it). So, they couldn’t show off Ultra Instinct / Ego.
As I like to say, the movies are just more, and this movie gave us a bunch of really great Piccolo scenes. Him chastising Gohan, pretending to be a Red Ribbon solider, all the stuff with him and Pan. The main event fight doesn’t start until about an hour in… so, we get more time of them NOT fighting than fighting. I love it.
Tumblr media
This is Piccolo's movie... and I don't want to hear any BS about "Piccolo is Gohan's real dad." As much as I like Piccolo. Piccolo spends half the movie telling the audience that Gohan isn't good enough. Then at the climax, Piccolo just expects Gohan to find it in himself to defeat Cell Max. Which is the the EXACT same thing Goku did during the Cell Games! Except Goku ALWAYS believed in his son!
With that all being said… I kinda wish this wasn’t canon.
Mainly, because as good as the set up is, the conclusion feels unearned. It might be a consequence of being a movie, but (in my opinion) when you have two big character developments, at least one of them should feel triumphant.
First, it irks me that Piccolo wishes to unlock his hidden power and Shenron “throws in something else.” Why can’t it just be his hidden power? Now I’m wondering what the fuck that symbol is. And this is the second time someone has WISHED for a power-up. It feels really lame and unearned. It kinda sucked when they did it for Super Saiyan God, then it sucked again when SS Blue just happened. Now, we have Orange Piccolo on that list.
Maybe they’ll explain it better in the manga, but what made SSj1 (and SSJ2 to a different extent) was how well they seeded them before they appeared. (SSJ3 sucks because they didn’t build up to it correctly.)
Tumblr media
My theory is that it's a mix of Ultra Instinct / Ego, but it still doesn't explain how he managed to tap into either of them. You could say because Gohan talks about practicing the "demon drill" in secret, he's also been training with UI-UE in secret too.
Then there’s Beast Gohan. 25 min into the battle, Piccolo gets bodied, and Gohan rages out. I’d like to know why this isn’t just the SSJ2 transformation? What is this transformation? Where did it come from? I have my theories… but from a narrative perspective, it’s just a dues ex machina. SSJ1 was not a dues ex machine – it had real ramifications after it happened. Beast Gohan appeared to resolve the plot and then disappeared.
They need to do what they did with Slug and say - that wasn’t a real transformation. Then actually explain what "Beast Mode" is supposed to be.
7/10 – The spectacle is great, but the best part is the first half. Feel free to leave your comments (and theories about Beast Gohan) in the comments below!

I do have gohan beast brainrot now, which is kind of weird since a lot of fans seem to hate the form. and that's fair and all, it's just-
the manga is going the direction of "he can use it whenever he wants now" and I do kind of wonder what they'd even think the kind of 'training' piccolo gave him to learn to control it was
like I wouldn't think he'd have trouble controlling himself while in the form, more that you'd wonder if it would be hard to figure out how to transform into it again. because of the whole rage thing. it's not like it's easy to just get angry on command
and anyway if the narrative behind gohan was "he needs to learn to keep his anger under control" that'd literally just be what they're doing with broly
but it just makes you think what he had to learn and train for to the point he can literally tap into 'beast mode' at will. it feels like it'd be really relevant to the direction of his character, so it's a bit disappointing it happens off-screen maybe
i mean yeah, of course it's relevant to his character. he gets his own unique form from the power of being gohan. any sort of discussion about it and what it is and how he can master it is indirectly a discussion about gohan. there's no 'super saiyan' in the name or anything this time
so that's probably why I'm so interested in seeing what kind of narrative that would be if it was ever discussed on-screen
i don't trust toyotaro's writing ability to pull it off well; even when the stories are decent they still feel like exposition dumps and the characterisation is slightly off, but at least it's nice they're giving us more fuel for endless fanfic discussion

Dragon Ball Super 088
Tumblr media
This one’s kind of a grab bag, like Episode 85 was, but the random stuff is better, so I guess it works out.
Tumblr media
Let’s start with Piccolo training Gohan.  They only have about a day to prepare, but Piccolo thinks he can get more out of Gohan.  For one thing, he manages to get Gohan to use his “Ultimate/Mystic/Potential Unleashed” form that he used against Super Buu.  Throughout this series, it’s been implied that Gohan just lost that ability, or forgot how to do it, but this time Piccolo just tells him to go ham and he does it on the first try.
Tumblr media
Piccolo also tells Gohan he has two major weaknesses holding him back.  First, Gohan uses his emotions to drive himself, which is fine to a certain point, but it can be dangerous to tie your power to your emotions.  If he keeps thinking about his need to protect his family, it can make him afraid, or desperate, which can make him prone to mistakes, no matter how strong he gets.
Second, Gohan tends to get careless when he’s winning.  Piccolo cites the Majin Buu fight, but I think we all know he’s only choosing that battle because the Cell Games are too painful an example.  Of course, we’ve already seen a more recent instance of this when Gohan sparred with Krillin in episode 83.  Krillin proved that he could outmanuever Gohan and score a ring-out, despite Gohan’s superior power.
Tumblr media
This is best illustrated in the scene where Gohan manages to chop off Piccolo’s forearm, kind of like how Tagoma ripped it off back in Episode 22.  That pretty much took Piccolo out of the fight back then, but Gohan doesn’t follow through with another attack the way Tagoma did.  He just assumes he’s done, which gives Piccolo a chance to show off his new trick of firing ki blasts from severed limbs.
So Gohan is still making the same mistakes he did as a kid, while Piccolo is continuously adapting.  He won’t be beaten the same way again.
Tumblr media
Anyway, they plan to keep pushing to see if they can get Gohan to an even higher level before the Tournament, and Gohan suggests they work on some combo moves while they’re at it.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, in Universe 6, Cabba seeks out his old mentor from the Sadala Defense Force, Captain Renso.  He asks him to join Team Universe 6, but Renso’s got a bum leg, and feels he would only slow the team down.  Instead, he suggests that Cabba recruit his sister, Caulifla.
Tumblr media
Cabba’s not too keen on that idea.  While he’s confident in her fighting ability, they’ve never gotten along too well, mainly because Caulifla is the leader of a bunch of punks on the mean streets of Planet Sadala.  Considering how shitty the U6 team was in the Destroyer Tournament, I’d say anything is an improvement.  All I know is that Caulifla only makes a brief appearance in this episode, and she immediately became my favorite U6 character.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Krillin and 18 are sparring in their backyard.  18 keeps whoopin’ his ass, and she’s already decided to claim his share of the nonexistent prize money.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Trunks doesn’t know how to work a diaper.
Tumblr media
But Vegeta does!  Seriously, when did he get so good at this?  I’m pretty sure he had Gohan give him lessons or something.
Tumblr media
Beerus is annoyed that everyone is so care free about things, so he considers telling them about their universe possibly getting erased, if only so he won’t have to worry alone.  But Whis warns him that Bulma will give him shit for it.  And he’s right, she would.  I mean, Beerus can blame Goku all he wants but Beerus could have stopped him if he gave a shit.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Yamcha continues to fantasize about playing hard-to-get when Goku asks him to join the team.  He’s starting to wonder why Goku hasn’t approached him already, but you kind of need to speak up if you want in this thing, man.
Tumblr media
Anyway, fans complained about the terrible state of Yamcha’s apartment when this episode first aired, and I think the bigger issue is that the artists just blew off drawing his apartment.   Like, this doesn’t look like there was any conscious decision to make it look fancy or crummy.  There’s simply no aesthetic whatsoever.  The furniture looks like it came from a motel, the chair looks like a child’s car seat, the bed looks like something out of a 1940′s cartoon, and there’s no door leading to the patio.
It’s the same problem we saw in Future Trunks’ bedroom at Capsule Corp.  They just slapped some stuff together and called it done.
And yeah, that’s it.

The Prince's Sacrifice [Vegeta & Tifa]
// drabble with @badassbarmaid
The fight between the brainwashed Majin Vegeta and Tifa had supplied more than enough energy to revive Majin Buu, especially once they were righting at full power in their Super Saiyan 2 forms. Once they could sense Buu’s energy, Tifa’s words finally made Vegeta snap out of Babidi’s control. Just like with Cell, this was his doing. But this time he will make sure, it would not be Kakarot that saves them all, Vegeta was adamant he clean up his own mess this time.
So after knocking out Tifa as took out the Sensu Bean Gohan had given her before, he consumed it for himself so he could fight Majin Buu on his own. The pink fat child like monstrosity unfortunately kept regenerating from his every attack, so he knew the only way was to convert all his remaining power into a final explosion that he could not regenerate back from.
Knowing the Namek was nearby with ears able to hear him, Vegeta decided to say his final goodbyes. It would be up to Piccolo if he wished to relay them or not, he couldn’t care less. There was especially a lot he wanted to tell Tifa before he knocked her out, but at least he had the time to say it now.
Tumblr media
“Tifa, I’m sorry that things had to come to this. I suppose my instincts fixated on fighting you because deep down, I knew, that you were the only one who could bring me back to my senses. Hmph, to think that a little Saiyan girl like yourself could influence me so much over the years, but I do not regret the time I spent on you.
If I had a daughter instead of a son, I would have liked her to look to you as a role model besides myself. Gohan has clearly gone softer over the years, it could have been much worse if you were not there to keep him training. With me and Kakarot gone, it’s up to you and Gohan to secure the peace. No matter how long it lasts, do not stop your training, who knows when the next threat will come.
As the Prince, it should be his duty to take care of his subjects his and people. I had forgotten about that before we met, Tifa, you are the only one that gave me the respect my royal lineage entails. So just like Kakarot before me, I leave the Earth to you and the others.
Farewell.”
Tumblr media
With that all said, he let out a final roar as he released all his remaining energy, filling up the area with a golden hemisphere of destructive light. It was truly goodbye, he knew he could not have a body like Kakarto in the Otherworld. But at least he hoped at the very end, he did not lose his pride as the Prince of all Saiyans.

Part XI(Finale) - Evolution
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Gohan & Sym Part XI[Finale])
Part IX(Finale) - Sym's Evolution:
In Sym's mind, only one bit of Cell remained, who is back to his Perfect Cell form because Sym was born from him, not Almighty Cell who had his memories & was created with the remains of the Larve & Cell Jr pieces. Perfect Cell aimed to take over his body & tried to use Sym's Obsidian form to fight him, but Sym is beyond that.
There was no fight. Sym had 2 choices, either destroy Cell once & for all, or absorb him. Either way he'd be completely gone from his consciousness. Sym chose to absorb him, telling his father that he'll never be like him.
Meanwhile, Sym's body starts to be covered in an orb(like Frieza during his transformations in Budokai 3), it cracks & he emerges. Sym evolved.
Just like Omni-Cell, no more insect features, Sym looks more like a Saiyan but with his father's resemblance, but he has bird-like features(because of Toriyama. His last name partly means bird). The battle is done, Sym is a new ally to the Z-Fighters & the battle inspired Gohan to keep up with his training.
Sym does the same under Piccolo, their dynamic truly becomes like father & son. Sym took on the purple Gi, but Piccolo gave him the weighted armor. Sym wants to gain his own power. He still has SSJ, but forms after that are similar, but with bird puns(including Platinum, which he currently can't use again). He even sparred with Tien & Yamcha, seeing Ultra Riyō for the 2nd time and realized they couldve jumped & killed him if he was evil.
Before that, he feels like he owes 17 & 18. He went to Capsule Corp, asked(politely. Uub & Cabba are polite & Gohan before them, that seems to be a thing with these students) Bulma for a place to rebuild 16.
Sym has Cell's memories & Gero's but partly. One ability that stood out was Sym reading minds far beyond what Goku could do. He sees memories, which is how he was caught up on the Earth's DB Super events(up to the Moro Saga) & God Ki. He saw Andriod 21's memories when she was Vomi, and he saw 17 & 18's memories of 16.
So Sym pieced together 16's memories enough. The body he made for him is BioMechanical like him, Cell and 17 & 18. Not fully machine like before & it also has Sym's Saiyan & Namekian genes.
It took 2 days for 16 to wake up & he was pissed because he remembers everything. Including the Cell Jrs. Sym had to talk him down & stop a fight from happening in Bulma's lab. After everything's explained, 16 calms down & let Sym finish making his new armor. Which comes from data on Vegeta's RoF armor that Bulma made.
Sym gives 16 an actual name, Shin Gevo. They go to see 18, Gevo's reunited with Krillin & 18, and he basically becomes an Uncle to Marron. The two visit MVP 17 next, and Gevo's proud of 17 becoming a Park Ranger, which he intends to help him with. But he definitely has to train, test his new strengths.
(Also, when it comes to this What-If, Super Hero doesn't change much. Except Cell Max had more time to cook, Sym didn't know Gero had other Kin, Sym & Gevo meet Dr Hado, see that he isn't evil, and Cell Max whoops Sym, who tried to use his Platinum form again but cant. And Sym called Cell Max a cheap knock-off of his father).
Sym will return in Rakshasa's Reincarnation(where Cell & 21 will also return, in Hell), and after that, The Cold King's Fury.
No joke, I got other What-Ifs planned. Earthlings Rise will keep going, and I'll finish Namek Prime first. Just three characters though, not tons of transformations. So that shouldnt be a huge project like this one, but it might.
Until Next Time.

Chapter 47: The Warning
How am I going to tell her? How should I tell her? Damn it! Not only is there another fight, waiting for me, I’m supposed to die. What upsets me is that I die before the battle, and from a heart virus, how pathetic. I’m grateful that Trunks gave me this medicine, but I’m still very worried.
All my friends get killed in his future. My Gohan will be eventually killed. What hurts me the most is I wasn’t there to keep him safe. I do wonder why Trunks didn’t say anything about Chichi. Is she even alive at the time? Piccolo is trying to talk to me, about our plans for training, but I can’t think about that right now. As excited, I am for a good fight, there’s just so much to take in. I literally am putting my life on hold; I also have more at risk.
That’s when I look up and see Gohan looking at me. My little boy. I left you, and you had to suffer from my past. NO! Not this time! With the knowledge that I have time to train you, that I have the cure to that virus, I will not fail you. I don’t plan on ever leaving you with my burdens! You should be able to make your own path. You should be able to do what you want, and not follow in my footsteps. As much as I would like to step down, I don’t want to put that on your hands, if I can avoid it.
Piccolo tells me he’ll come back tomorrow, with that I’m alone with my son. Did I even give him a proper hug? With so much going on, did I ignore you? I need to fix that. “Come here son.” He rushes into my embrace, and he’s crying. No! You’re not supposed to cry. My little man is supposed to be happy, not hurt.
“I miss you so much daddy.” I can’t help but to hold him tighter, and rub the top of his head. My son is in pain, and it’s all my fault. I have to fix this. “Let’s go tell mom, that you’re back.” He looks so happy saying that, but I’m worried. I’m reminded of the little problem I have to face. “Mom will be so happy you’re back.” I can’t help but bite my lip. That happiness isn’t going to last long, especially when I tell her the news. She’s going to kill me. Maybe I shouldn’t tell her right away. So, I just smile, to not worry Gohan.
We then land in front of our home. I’m not ready to face her yet. I tell Gohan to go in without me. That I just need a moment to brace myself. He questions why, but I assure him it’s for a happy reason. the moment he walks in, I try my best to put on a happy face. I know she won’t believe it, well not for a long enough time. But I am happy that I’ll get to see her. It’s just, the news that I have to tell her, is what’s breaking me from the inside. My poor Chichi.
I’m started to feel extremely worried all of a sudden. It’s probably because Gohan has still hasn’t come home. I just finished dinner too. If he doesn’t show soon it’ll start to get cold. He knows how I get when the food gets cold. But now I feel a stronger worry in my heart. Something is definitely wrong, but what. Just when I was going to reach out for Gohan, he opens the door. I rush and hug my baby, and spin across the room. I then set him down, to face me. “Don’t you scare me like that. Now, tell mommy what was going on.” He just looks at the ground, and stays quiet.
I don’t like this. What’s going on? Just when I was going to say something more, I felt strong arms embracing me from the back. Gohan is now looking at me, with a smile. I barely hear him say surprise, as I’m engulf in emotions. I’m on the brink of tears, when I finally look to see who’s holding me. It’s… It’s… “GOKU!” I turn around and give him a proper embrace. My husband’s home! I feel like a kid, as I try to embrace was all my being. I don’t even know that he had moved us to the couch. I don’t want to let go. MY HUSBAND’S HOME! I can’t hold the tears, as I continue hugging him. I can feel he’s rubbing my back, but it just makes me cry more. He’s home! He’s finally home!
But the moment gets ruin, when his famous stomach decided to announce itself. I actually miss that, too. We start to giggle, as I finally get off his lap. That’s when I remember. “Oh, no!” He looks worried. “I didn’t make enough.” I feel disappointed now. If I knew he was coming today, I would had made all his favorites. So, not fair. I then felt his arms around me again, and I just enjoy the comfort. “Go clean up. I’ll make more while you two eat.”
He raised my face to look at him. “That’s ok. Don’t worry about that for now.” Now I’m worried again. Something is really wrong, especially if Goku is not concerned about food. I want to ask him, but he just kisses me, and goes to our room to clean up. I can’t help but feel trouble by his response. So, I follow him into our room, and lock the door. He turns to me worried. “Chichi.” He’s biting his lip. He doesn’t do that unless something is really wrong, or we’re having sex.
I reach out to him, and he backs away. Something is really wrong. He usually tells me, but the fact that he’s backing away is really worrying me. So much that it angers me that he’s not saying anything. “Goku! Tell me what’s wrong! Now! Mister!”
“3 years. Something bad. I die before…” He’s crying. It feels like the room got hotter, as I witness his hair change color.
“Goku?” I try to reach him, but he turns away. I hug him from behind, he’s just still. “It’s ok, it’s ok. You can tell me when you’re ready.” I let him go, and rub his back before I start walking towards the door.
“Please don’t leave.” I turn to see he’s still crying. I try to reach out again, and this time he embraces me. “Chichi, I don’t know what I’m going to do.” I rub his back, and we end up sitting on the floor. “Chichi, I’m going to die in 3 years. And this happened before a big fight happens, and I can’t save anyone. Everyone gets killed, except Gohan. But then he gets killed sometime after.” I felt a tight pain in my chest, as he told me this. He then held me tighter. “I failed at protecting our son. I failed at protecting you.” He just continued sobbing into my shoulder.
I try all my might to hold back my own tears, and I tried to smooth my Goku’s pain. Then it hit me. “How do you know what’s going to happen in the future?” He then pulls out a small bottle, from inside his weird shit, and tells me that some kid from the future told him what was going to happen. That the bottle contain medicine that will save him, but Goku still seems troubled. I still think he’s hiding something from me. But I’ll let it go for now. Besides, he calm down enough that his hair changed back. Kinda feels cold without that strange energy coming from him.
I wipe the tears from his face, and remind him that he still needs to get cleaned up for dinner. That’s when I felt him grabbing my behind, and the other hand keeping me close. “Don’t I get a welcome home kiss?” I couldn’t help to giggle at that. “There’s my happy wife. Now come on, I want her kisses.” My silly husband. I give him a quick kiss, on the lips. He starts pouting. “Not that one.” I kiss his nose. “No.” I can’t stop giggling. He’s so cute when he pouts like that. “If you don’t give me the kiss I want, I’ll just take it. I’m trying to play nice, so, give me. Give me.” This time I give him a long, passionate kiss. I could feel his hands roaming my back. We break off the kiss, and I’m left breathless. He practically purrs into my ear, “Much better. I want more of those for dessert.”
I couldn’t help blush at that. “Behave mister.” He nods, and we get up from the floor. I give him one last look, before I leave the room, while he gets cleaned up.
“GOKU!” I just finished putting on a clean tank top, when I heard death calling me. What did I do now? The moment I walked out our room, I spot Gohan mouthing a ‘sorry dad.’ Oh crap! I tried to retreat into our room. “Don’t you think about it! Come out here! RIGHT NOW!” I silently prayed that my destruction will be painless. I walked into the living room, to face my sentence. “Why did our son say he left because he could sense this Frieza guy? Didn’t you ‘supposedly’ kill him?” You just had to tell your mother. Well, she asked. “Excuse me! I’m waiting for an answer!”
“I thought I did kill him. I was pretty sure I killed him. And I thought the explosion would do the rest.” I whispered that last part. You can see she wasn’t buying it.
“I see. Well clearly someone else made SURE he was dead this time. Oh, would you also care to explain why Gohan was asking me permission to train for 3 years?” That one I gulp, and wished I could instant transmission and come back to a perfectly happy wife. Well, looks like today really isn’t my dad. Getting news about my upcoming death, having to worry about future events, and on top of that, a beautiful angry wife. Which I can’t do anything about with Gohan standing right here.
“Just hear me out.” She’s tapping her foot, and a finger on her arm. Oh boy, whatever next comes out my mouth is either going to save me, or it’ll be my last words. Please Kami, I don’t want to sleep outside on my first night back. “Well, you see hon, there’s these cyborgs, that are currently being created to kill me, in three years. And not only is their mission to kill me, they also an unstoppable force that will destroy the human race.” I smiled, and slowly stepped back as she slowly moved forward. “I was hoping to train Gohan to help us out, since, well, we’ll have a better chance at winning.”
She then grabbed me by my top. “And when we’re you going to tell me this? Or even ask me?”
“After dinner. And tomorrow we were going to start training.” She let me go and started crying. Oh no! No! she then got angry again.
“My baby isn’t going to be training for 3 years! He has a lot of catching up to do in his studies! And if he takes more time off studying, HE’LL FALL BEHIND!”
“Come on, Chichi. Once this is over no more training, no more fights, he can do all the studying he wants. Just this once. Come on. For the earth. And besides, Gohan wants to train.”
“Yeah, mom.” I think he just hit the nail on my coffin, cause Chichi looks ready to explode.
“I said no! I don’t care if it’s for the earth! MY BABY IS GOING TO STUDY!” Chichi can’t be serious. She just has to be joking. I wouldn’t be asking, or even telling her, if it wasn’t important. But for her to say that she doesn’t care about the earth sounds like a joke.
“Oh, Chichi, you must be kidding?” I lightly slapped her shoulder. Well, I thought it was light, but clearly it wasn’t. For my wife flew through the wall, past a tree, and landed on a large rock. CRAP! She’s twitching, so she’s alive, but now I’m too afraid to touch her.
I try my best to help her up, and bring her to the house. I then go about that I should take her to Dr. Knight, but then she insist not to. “But Chichi.”
“It’s not that bad. Put me down, and get the first aid kit.” As me, and Gohan bandage her up, I keep apologizing. I been in space for so long, I don’t even know my own strength. Even though I’m trying to help bandage her, I’m afraid to do anything.
I can’t believe this man. Does he really think I’m going to let him train our baby for that long. Now to top it off, I got slam through our home. He insisted on taking me to the doctors, but these are flesh wounds. Plus, dinner got cold. He comes back, and the whole day goes up in flames. What am I going to do with him?
He does something, that makes him disappear for a moment, and then he returns. He tells me how Korin doesn’t have senzu beans right now, but he’ll have some soon. The rest of the evening is spent me trying to keep my temper, as Goku tries to wash dishes, and not break every other one. I’m so close to telling just stop, but he keeps mumbling how he has to do this. Gohan had finally changed back to normal clothes, and is doing one of his new textbooks.
It’s when we finally put Gohan to bed, that I realize the situation I was in. Plus, I also noticed how distant Goku was being. I long ago forgave him; since clearly, it was an accident. When we reached our room, is when I really saw how bad Goku took it.
I had just made it to our dresser, when I looked back to ask him something. He didn’t move from the door. He looks scared. I try walking towards him, and he moves away. “Goku. Can you please help me?”
“But… But… what if I hurt you again?” He looks really nervous. My poor husband.
“Please Goku. I really need a shower. Just help me out. Please.” His face turns red, but he does agree to help me. As he slowly undresses me, he bits his lip. Once my tops are off, he stops, as his hands are on my hips. “Goku.” He shakes his head and looks up at me. “Can you finish please.” He nods, and go back to undressing me. Once I’m down to my bra and panties, do I remember that maybe a shower isn’t a good idea. Maybe a hot bath would do better. Or a sponge bath.
It feels like forever since I last cleaned my wife. It almost feels like an honor to even touch her again. Things didn’t turn out how I hoped, but being able to have this moment will do. I try my best to stay focus, and be gentle as possible as I clean my beautiful wife. Even when she’s all bandaged up, she still have an unmistakable beauty to her. I really need to watch myself around her.
But now that I think of it, maybe it’s a good thing that plans were changed. What if I harmed her doing ‘that’? I could never forgive myself. As I continue to wash her, I try my best to be extra gentle. And now that I’m slowly cleaning her legs, I try my best to stay focus, even with the fact I have her open to me. I can’t do anything; I’ll end up hurting her more.
Why did I have to go and hurt her? I messed up big time. I finally rinsed off the soap, and quickly grabbed a towel. Once all dry, I didn’t know if I should carrier her to the room or let her walk. I felt lost. I let her walk, but I stood close behind. Once I helped her get dress, and into bed, I was face with another problem. I can’t join her, in our bed. What if I hurt her while we sleep? I could never forgive myself. So, I end up sitting on the floor, by the foot of the bed. I really don’t deserve her.

You mentioning Kami giving up on Goku as an anti-Piccolo Jr plan, passing him off to Popo and pivoting to learning the Mafuba, made me think of something.
Is this why Kami gave up on Goku?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Piccolo wouldn't know this information, he's getting that from Kami.
But Kami didn't monitor Goku's training with Popo. In order for Kami to know that, it must have happened when Kami was training him, before he gave up.
So is this WHY Kami gave up on Goku and passed him off to Popo, because Goku couldn't handle a full year in the HTC? Goku could only handle a month (2 hours in real-time) and that wasn't enough for Kami.
Kami decided that if Goku couldn't take more than a month, he wasn't going to be tough enough to beat Piccolo Jr, so Kami passed him off to Popo and decided to learn the Mafuba to handle Piccolo himself.
As an aside, it's funny you mention Piccolo asking Goku if he discussed the plan with Gohan first.
Tumblr media
Because Goku did discuss it with Gohan. Not fully, but day 1 of training, Goku told Gohan the plan was to make him stronger.
Tumblr media
Gohan just didn't think he was serious.
Tumblr media
who do you think is the best teacher in Dragonball?
That's a tough question. But I'm leaning towards Mr. Popo.
Our journey through teachers begins, of course, with the Muten-Roshi. Goku's only with Roshi for about eight months so we don't get to see a lot of his teaching, even though other Kame-senryu students are with him for longer. In that time, he's able to instill a very important philosophy in Goku that will guide him through his life.
Tumblr media
It's the Muten-Roshi who imparts Dragon Ball's central theme of never being satisfied with yourself and always striving for self-improvement. He went to great lengths to instill that in his pupils - lengths so great that even Roshi questions whether they were truly necessary.
And he does have other good things to teach. Most notably, he's the one who teaches Goku the value of mental discipline and rest.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This well-balanced approach to self-improvement is something Goku carries with him. Part of what makes him so exceptional as a martial artist is that he understands that training and technique honing is only part of the process.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of the things that makes Goku a great martial artist is that he understands your body needs time to recover and grow after exertion. That is the turtle master way.
But for all his benefits as a mentor, what the Muten-Roshi sucks at is fucking teaching martial arts. In terms of philosophy, he has much to impart. But when they ask him, the Muten-Roshi, the Old Heavenly Master of Martial Arts, to teach them martial arts?
Tumblr media
He just gives them bodybuilding instruction. Roshi tells them that this is all the Kame-senryu is: Extensive strength training to become so physically tough that you can knock out a foe with one punch. He is, however, full of shit.
Tumblr media
Despite claiming that martial arts is just being really strong, his fight against Goku in the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai sees him pull out all kinds of esoteric techniques and skills to level the playing field against Goku's insurmountable might and analytical brilliance. The Muten-Roshi knows a ton of practical martial arts technique. He's just not sharing.
I'm half-convinced he held all this stuff back on purpose just so he'd have a few aces up his sleeve in the tournament proper. Which even Roshi isn't sure was actually necessary.
His next teacher is Karin, the God of Martial Arts. Karin has some useful wisdom to impart with regard to anticipation.
Tumblr media
And he introduces one of the most important items in the Dragon Ball series.
Tumblr media
Thank you Viz for the redundant translation of "Holy Hermit Bean Bean". I don't get enough migraines from the dub constantly calling them Senzu Beans. This is the Chai Tea of Dragon Ball.
Goku is with Karin for about three days, and it goes pretty well. Karin presents Goku with a challenging test to overcome, which he must do by getting lighter on his footwork and learning to anticipate Karin's moves.
But for the most part....
Tumblr media
It's still just strength training. Tenshinhan's out there learning secret Tsuru-senryu techniques to levitate in the air and nobody's willing to do more for Goku but bulk up his muscles. Speaking of which.
Tumblr media
This guy tried to murder his own students because they wouldn't do an assassination for him. Fuck this guy. He sucks. Get out of here!
Tumblr media
When you get to the moon, tell Toninjinka that his mochi needs wo-- Oh, wait, the moon's gone. Uh. Have fun in space.
Goku's next teacher would be God. Or at least he would be if God ever bothered to teach him. Which he didn't. Goku has never studied under God.
Tumblr media
He made Goku stay at his Temple for three years to prepare for his rematch with Piccolo. But he gave up on that after deciding Goku didn't have what it takes to do what he felt must be done: Kill Piccolo and let God die with him. Goku's soft heart wouldn't allow him to do it.
So he dumped Goku on Popo and went, "You deal with this, I'm busy," and then went off to pursue the Mafuba/Evil Containment Wave instead. Goku's training was a scrapped project for him.
Nonetheless, Goku grew substantially during his time in Heaven. (Look at him! He's so much taller-- No, I jest.) Popo is the first teacher to offer Goku something that isn't strength training.
Tumblr media
It's almost like he's never had a master teach him spirit or skills before. It's almost like.
Mr. Popo doesn't offer Goku more strength training. Instead, for the first time, Goku has someone who wants to teach him technique.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is some of the most game-changing instruction Goku ever receives in his career. Over the next three years, Popo sharpens Goku not just physically but spiritually.
He technically doesn't learn to sense ki here; He gained a rough comprehension of it from drinking rat poison earlier that day. But as Popo demonstrates here, there's a world of difference between "Oh cool I can sense your ki" and "I feel Yamcha's ki 700 km in that direction. He's sitting in his home eating breakfast Wheaties and scratching his butt. Puar's preparing to make eggs aaaaaand now he's a frying pan."
This is where Goku makes the transition from martial artist to Heavenly Martial Artist, and the difference is stark. When he shows up to the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai, he's on a whole different playing field.
Tumblr media
He no longer experiences reality the same way as everyone else. He's ascended to a higher plane of understanding. All because of Popo, since God abandoned this project and ran off to do his own thing instead. Goku is literally the "Dr. Gero's computer kept working and completed Cell anyways" of martial arts.
Great work, Popo. Gold star.
Kaio is next on Goku's list of mentors. He's working on a bit of a time crunch; Goku only has six months to spend with him. Kaio's training emphasizes two things. One is, of course, more strength training though this time there's an interesting twist to it.
Tumblr media
Planet Vegeta's gravity is at least as strong as the gravity on Kaio's world. This is where Goku's introduced to the concept of gravity training for the first time - Something that, ironically, Vegeta would cling to more heavily than Goku. Goku's been doing weight training since Roshi, but the idea of increased gravity as a substitute for (or in addition to) weight is introduced by Kaio.
Goku himself would incorporate this gravity training into his later efforts to more fully master the Kaio-ken on his way to Namek. Speaking of which, that's the other thing Kaio imparts on him. From him, Goku learns the Genki-Dama and the Kaio-ken.
Tumblr media
Kaio pretty much became Goku's forever teacher after this point, but we rarely see him do more than supervise. Which makes sense, since Goku officially became a Master himself as of the Namek arc. Though all of Goku's teachers will always be looking out for him, his art becomes truly his own from this point onward.
That brings us to Piccolo.
Tumblr media
Piccolo comes from the "My Daddy beat me and I turned out fine" school of shaping young minds. It's to be expected; He was literally Evil Incarnate just eight years ago.
While Piccolo's journey of redemption is heartwarming to see and he does succeed in honing Gohan into a weapon, his skills as a mentor leave something to be desired. He fails to consider Gohan's psychological needs. He builds Gohan's strength and teaches him technique, but fails to grasp that this four-year-old child does not have a warrior instinct to get out there and throw hands with planet-killers.
He throws Gohan into the deep end and Gohan sinks like a stone. Failing to develop his bond with Gohan and offer the kid the encouragement he needs to get out there and do this is a fatal error in his training.
Tumblr media
Piccolo pays for this mistake with his life.
Finally, that leaves Goku himself.
Tumblr media
As a Master in his own right, Goku has so much to impart onto Gohan. At least, whatever Piccolo hasn't already. As a teacher, Goku is encouraging of Gohan and offers him clear and unmistakable guidance.
He talks things over with Gohan, explaining ahead of time what their goal is and how they're going to achieve it.
Tumblr media
Like Popo, Goku's pretty great as a teacher. There's just. One. Small. Problem: He fails to consider Gohan's psychological needs. Yeah, that's right, Goku walks face-first into the same error that Piccolo died for, which is why Piccolo freaks out on him for it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It helps that Piccolo not only has personal experience making this exact same mistake, but also the wisdom of God now.
Like. It's important to note that it's not that Goku misunderstands Gohan. He knows, intellectually, what kind of person Gohan is. He knows Gohan's passions lie elsewhere.
Tumblr media
Nonetheless, Goku sees too much of himself in Gohan, overlooking the reality that Gohan was so gung-ho about training with Goku because he thought he was helping his dad. Despite clearly conveying the mechanisms and goals of their training, Goku never even thought to broach this topic with him because he just. Assumed.
Even though he knew Gohan longed for academia, he assumed Gohan also had the spirit of a martial artist in him. That Gohan was still driven by the same fire that he is, compelled to push his limits and test himself against mighty foes. He makes that fatal mistake that so many parents make, of projecting himself onto his child.
Tumblr media
Goku pays for this mistake with his life.
Android 16 is able to salvage Goku's mistakes and make this work, much as Goku once salvaged Piccolo's. And to his credit, Goku learns and is able to offer Gohan the emotional support and direct coaching he needs to finish the job.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I particularly love "Show me the power that we made together" because it puts the emphasis on his and Gohan's bond, rather than Gohan's fighting. It demonstrates the expansion of his understanding of Gohan's motives.
Nonetheless, this was a pretty significant error too make as a teacher so I can't give Goku full marks.
With that in mind... I gotta give it to Popo. Popo took God's castoff dumpster-project, poured himself into it, and gave Goku some of the greatest instruction of his entire career. A+

Building on Happyhonagon's idea, let's make things real dark. What if Frieza had injured Piccolo, but killed Gohan? Would it make any difference for DBZ? Just imagine how it would've been for goku to see his son not only push him out of the way but watch the Death Beam kill him right in front of his very eyes.
Goku would turn Super Saiyan as per usual because his son just DIED. However, this situation will have a major impact on Gohan instead. It’s his choice to go to Namek, trying to revive the Zfighters, but in the end he just died in one blink of an eye. As Piccolo can’t save him this time, Gohan will think himself as too weak to handle himself, let alone ‘save’ others. His short death gave him some time to think.
Tumblr media
After being revived and transported on Earth using Porunga’s last wish, Gohan would train a bit more harder than canon, possibly becoming less of a bookworm and more of a serious fighter as his ‘death’ kinda acts as a motivation/trauma. Gohan would be more enthusiastic to join the Cell Games and fight Cell too in the future. But dang, poor Gohan
Ehh that’s what I think, u guys can have different approach.

For the pass 2 weeks, I've been thinking about Goku, Krillin, Yamcha, Tien and Chaotzu in the Street Fighter universe. At first it was because of shipping dynamics, ( Imagine Yamcha x Juri Han, and I tried thinking of some ways for Krillin x Chun-Li) but the Z-Fighters would be around other actual martial artists! Like Tien fighting Gen is the main idea I've saw, but I need other mind to share this idea.😶 ( If you're familiar with the lore and characters of Street Fighter)
I may not know a whole lot about Street Fighter lore, but I know enough. But the Z Fighters would have to be nerfed. Instead of Yamcha being able to casually blow up a planet, he'd to be stronger than Bora who is stronger than Mr. Satan. And Goku would be of similar strength to Ryu.
Well for 1... We had the same idea about Yamcha x Juri 😂 (it would be an interesting dynamic.)
Tumblr media
Yamcha would probably remain a bandit for the most part, but becomes a good guy. He'd wander the globe in a similar way that Ryu does. His interraction with Juri would be her toying with him while he tries to keep his cool. So a crazy lady with a reformed bandit. Always at odd but they save each other whenever the other is in danger. Maybe it kinda resembles a Batman/Catwoman kind of relationship.
And I think Tenshinhan fighting Gen is cool since both are former assassins. Maybe gave Gen help Tien leave the path of the assasin or they are simply 2 former assassins meeting in combat. Tenshinhan vs Sagat would be something cool to see too. And Chaozu could be kinda a zombie character since he's based off of Jiangshi. Maybe his life force is mystically tied to Tien through a special item. (Gameplay wise, this would make Chaozu part of Tenshinhan's moveset.)
Chun-Li and Chi-Chi knowing each other would be neat. A sisterhood bond between the two. Coupd even say Ox Ming was old friends with Chun-Li's father many years ago. (But having all these characters somehow know each other could seem contrived if done wrong.) I also feel like Videl and Karen would be rivals, while Videl & Sakura would be friends. Not sure how Bulma would fit into it besides being the rich friend. She'd be Karen but without the combat.
As for Krillin x Chun-Li? That could happen. They date for a while but later the relationship ends once Chun-Li leaves Interpol. And then there could be the story about Gero being the scientist for M. Bison & creates the Dolls. So Krillin, Cammy, and others help free some of the dolls which include 17 & 18.
I also think it would be cool if Roshi and Oro are old friends. And maybe Gouken was once friends with Grampa Gohan. And Gouken's students were friendly rivals against Roshi's students. Ryu & Ken vs Goku & Krillin, trying to see which school has better techniques. Ryu & Goku would both have the Satsui no Hado ( to try to control. Ken & Krillin would have the Kyoi no Hado ("Surge of Mindless Intent")/ Mu no Ken ("Fist of Nothingness") before Ryu & Goku, but Ken & Krillin's mastery of it would be less after Ryu & Goku master the Satsui no Hado/ Mu no Ken. Which fits well with Goku's name meaning "Awaken to Nothingness." It can resemble Ultra Instinct. Which Krillin's Non-Self State is essentially a lower level of power similar to UI.
Vegeta would have been succumbed by the power of the Satsui no Hado like Akkuma.
As for how other DBZ villains would fit in this? Maybe Freeza & Cell are experiments? Freeza was an ancient experiment that was once a ruler and recently awoken from a slumber? Maybe Cell is a recent creation of Gero & M. Bison that strictly follows orders? And Majin Buu is a stolen copy of Twelve that was altered by magic?
Not sure how to incorporate alien characters into SF. But someone like Piccolo could be a human who's body altered due to a special environment he grew up in. And since his clothing is Indonesian inspired, he could train under Dhalsim to explain why he has stretchy limbs. Then he went rogue then came back to his senses.
Kinda went more into it than I intended. 😅 I just like the idea of certain crossovers a lot.
But the coolest thing is that with the upcoming SF6, we can create DB characters if we want to! The character customization in that game looks amazingly in depth!
Also, DB x MK is a fun concept to me too. I've even done some fan art a few years ago.
