No it hasn’t. It’s been incredibly common for RPGs to give out-of-combat party members at least a fraction of the EXP received by combat participants and many others will give them full EXP since even Dragon Quest IV on the NES. The post-DQIV RPGs that don’t do this are usually not traditional turn-based RPGs.
Tumblr media
It’s so funny how controversial the EXP share is among Pokémon fans as if every RPG ever doesn’t distribute EXP among your whole party. Pokémon fans would know this if they played another RPG.

I did a lot of work for Lost in Cult on Console Chronicles, and a Handheld History Vol: 2
It was a lot of fun, and I pushed the images as far as I could go in the schedule I had. Here's a peak of a Phantasy Star image I created. I'm really excited to show more on release!

Sega Master System - Phantasy Star
Title: Phantasy Star / ファンタシースター
Developer/Publisher: Sega
Release date: 20 December 1987
Catalogue No.: G-1341
Genre: RPG
FM Sound: Yes
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The original Phantasy Star was designed for the Mark III and Master System. This is why the cartridge is black. Also, since Phantasy Star was made with the Master System in mind it has FM sound capabilities which improve on the weak sound of the Mark III (same as a non-Japanese Master System) as long as you have the FM Sound expansion pack. The Japanese Master System had this expansion pack built-in, unlike the Western Master System.
By today's standards the original Phantasy Star is pretty basic but still retains one of the most amazing mazes to be seen on an 8-bit or even 16-bit system. They are so smooth that you must see them to believe how good they look. The classic 3D dungeons were going to make a comeback in the Mega Drive version of Phantasy Star 4 but were cut out at the last minute to save on memory costs.

I’ve started working on a series of digital zines about the original four Phantasy Star games. The first one is available now as a free PDF! Please check it out, share, and let me know what you think! https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Ufs3qyC0HT7F3uKrgEfEKCdoYKhLz9u7/view?usp=sharing

oh there's the proof I wanted. while you can easily access the enemy assets by unpacking the jar file, it does not include their palette swaps.
I guess that in order to do a thorough sprite rip i'll have to actually play the whole game and see all enemies. how tragic. having to replay one of the most important games of my life. a sacrifice i make for the greater good

Day 17: An NPC that you hate
Wakes, in NGS. He's like the way Afin was in base PSO2, but he's not a bro character, he just walks by while I'm doing other things and talks at me.
This is to say that there aren't many NPCs that I actually dislike. I think second place might be the mad doctor who wanted to Kill Myau.

Being that this was missing a source - let's add that: This is from the Phantasy Star (I) official setting book from 1995 (it's actually cropped to remove the logo from the top of the page). I don't see a signature on the original painting, but I'm willing to bet this was by the late Rieko Kodama.

Thinking about that Gaben quote about having to provide better goods/services than pirates if companies want people to stop pirating and how Sega really did that with the Sega Ages version of Phantasy Star. Like yeah, it’s the original game which I could just pirate, but THIS is what makes it the only version of the game anyone should ever play.
Tumblr media
The character bars that track HP and MP and the dungeon map are all this release needed to convince me to never pirate the original Master System version.
And even though I don’t use it, it also has “Ages” mode which increases EXP and Meseta yields (I think it triples them?) and lowers encounter rates which is good for newcomers because the early game grind can be a big turn-off (you can die to your first encounter in the game, it’s brutal).
