I will say I do still think it's kind of both baffling and extremely telling that fandom so consistently gives Ford the whole 'caught up replicating cycles of abuse and also violent anger issues' shtick as though Stan didn't take all his cues for how to raise twelve year old boy Dipper from his own father's playbook. Like, I genuinely dunno what to say on that score, it's very explicit in the text. It is literally stated out loud in the show.
#megan whines into the empty abyss of cyberspace#gravity falls#stanley pines#listen man Stan is such a textbook boomer (affectionate)(derogatory) in so many ways and this is one of the most overt#and yeah it's absolutely a generational thing of the like#millennials and younger looking at the ways their parents talk about their grandparents and going 'holy shit that was so abusive'#while the parents in question laugh it off and are genuinely surprised that anyone could interpret how their parents treated them#as abusive at all#listen if Stanley Pines was even the tiniest bit self-aware there's no way in hell he'd treat Dipper like Filbrick treated him#but unfortunately Stan does actually textually explicitly see his dad as having been in the right!#and the show doesn't really push back much about it#it never quite threads that needle and honestly I do think that maybe that's one of the things that warps the fandom's takes so badly#like it aaalmost gets there in DD&MD when Dipper says he prefers hanging out with Ford because Ford doesn't make fun of him#and overtly play favorites with Mabel the way Stan does#but there just isn't quite space in the back half of s2 to really get into it#weirdmageddon is too busy with the fractures between each set of twins to have much time left over for intergenerational twin relations#I am also one of maybe like ten people who doesn't think Filbrick was the root of all human evil either sooooo...
