I’m sorry people are vague blogging and giving you crap about defending Dean. You don’t have to be hyper critical of every piece of media you consume. The early seasons of SPN were written in the early 2ks by a bunch of white men, so of course there are problems. We all know that. Your spreadsheet shows that those problems aren’t with Dean saying the word bitch a few times to female villains, but with the writers themselves, and no amount of critical character meta will undo that. And it’s weird for people to act like loving Dean through all the seasons means the viewer themselves is okay with misogyny. Dean (as the writers wrote him) changes drastically throughout the seasons, has depth, and is a fun character to watch. Enjoy your rewatch and monitoring Jackles jacting joices!

hi sorry i didn't see this earlier !! but thank you<3 I don't really mind others disagreeing w/ me but yeah i saw a few posts yesterday and i was like, oh no did i accidentally create discourse? sjfkdkdk i'm so insulated in my own corner of spnblr idk what's going on out there in the wild wild west. Also the vaguing feels very high school, like why are we doing that? But anyways, yes, the show as a whole has gone through SO many changes and lived through many eras where the social and political norms changed drastically. It's impossible to overlook those real world contexts and the writers themselves and what they each brought to the show / characters.

Like the show clearly got better (still had lots of flaws don't get me wrong!!) re: stuff like casual sexism / misogyny and the language used as what was socially acceptable to say changed. Like after I did my "bitch" and "skank" searches, I also searched "slut" out of curiosity and it doesn't occur very much (only 18 times out of 300+ episodes) and the use of the word drops off completely after season 12. Strangely it was used the most in season 4, a total of 9 times which is half the total usage of the word. I haven't had time to dig deeper but I'd be curious to see who those s4 writers were and to whom the word was being used (my guess is again villains / enemies / antagonists). But yea it's only used sparingly after s4, and then never after s12 which to me signals that like, the writers realized 'ok we can't get away with using that word anymore bc it's no longer socially acceptable' etc etc.

Bugs (I forgot how creatively they named the episodes in the old days). this episode is one of the earliest instances of jacting joices™️‼️ I think this episode features the first time onscreen Dean lies to Sam. and god, but jackles really started to steal the show here, i think. jacting circles around jared. lmao.

this got rly long, so i put it under the cut. TLDR; the moment Dean lies to Sam about John being the one to check up on him at Stanford is when the show starts to slide from Sam to Dean, IMO.

at the barbecue when Sam says the dad yelling at his son reminds him of John and Dean scoffs, says no that’s not like dad. Sam is like, well dad never treated you like that. you were perfect. he was all over my case.

Sam is still firmly the protagonist at this point. he's the one we sympathize with via the framing of the show. he's the one who lost his girlfriend the same way he lost his mom, who was kicked out of the family for wanting to go to school (they say he was kicked out of the house but we know the Winchesters don't have a house, don't have a home except each other), and he's the one who was pulled back into this hunting thing while Dean, the hunter we can't sympathize with bc we know jackshit ab hunting at this point, is the one who's on the outside.

and since Sam is the protag, the show is being written from his POV, and we don't know yet that John abuses Dean. that John has been abusing Dean via parentification and neglect (which, to be fair, he also neglects Sam, and Sam does feel it) ever since the fire. we don't know yet that no, Sam, John doesn't think Dean is perfect.

the show hasn't decided that yet, and frankly, the show never rly commits to calling John abusive – the show vacillates wildly between calling John a dedicated hero of a father who raised two fine hunters in the honorable pursuit of justice for his darling, dead wife, and a neglectful, tunnel-visioned man w severe abuse and substance issues that treated his kids like tools for his own personal quest for revenge for a woman he never rly knew

i digress.

the barbecue scene moves on. Sam's clearly not satisfied w/Dean's summation of John, and we're meant to take his side here based on what we know of John so far, so we're meant to read Dean's dismissal of Sam's legit comparison as the dismissal of a favorite child who got treated differently – like Sam sees it. but he drops it, they focus on the hunt again, and Dean is the somewhat clueless older brother who doesn't ~get~ Sam.

then they track the bug kid down in the woods, Sam bonds w/him bc they both feel misunderstood by their overbearing dads. he says, stick it out, you're gonna go to college in two years and get away from your dad.

oh my FUCKING god. at this point, we don't know that Dean never graduated high school. sure, he's got a GED but that's it. he never got to even dream of going to college – that was Sam. he never got to even dream of getting away from John – that was Sam. ohhhh be still, my heart. my Dean-loving heart.

so it's at this point Dean jumps in, says, what kinda advice is that? kid should stick with his family. bc he's not allowed to have different thoughts. Dean's alone, and probably has been for years, ever since Sam left. when he says kid should stick with his family, he means you should've stayed with me. which. selfish, yeah. but god, my fucking heart.

Sam just gives Dean the bitchface (justified, IMO, since he only hears you shouldn't have walked out on Dad, and not why did you leave me with him/why did you leave me alone with him/why did you leave me ALONE?)

and the scene moves on.

now they're at the university, Dean has clearly been thinking ab what Sam said, about how leaving his family was always a dream of his. he says, hey back there why'd you say that. Sam says, i know what he's going thru. Dean says, how about telling him to respect his old man, and Sam, understandably, kinda loses it. he calls Dean out – this isn't about the case, this is about you thinking i don't care about Dad = I don't care about the family = i don't care about you.

for as much as they talk on this show, Sam and Dean never really are on the same page, are they? Dean says one thing, Sam hears another and responds and Dean twists it and responds to what he thinks Sam's saying who responds to what he thinks Dean's saying and – yeah, that's Supernatural for ya!

AND THEN COMES THE FIRST STANDOUT MOMENT OF JACTING JOICES™️

Dean tells Sam (who's just said that he thinks John's disappointed in him and always has been, who thinks that when they find John he won't even wanna see Sam) that John used to check up on Sam at Stanford. and if this line and the exchange following it were delivered by a lesser actor (or one who wasn't possessed by Dean Winchester, as we all know jackles is), we wouldn't look at Dean and think: oh my god. you are lying. you are fucking lying. we'd believe him when he says it was john going to stanford, or we'd think Dean was lying but was sent on john's orders to check on him, or we'd think maybe Dean and john took turns.

but no. jackles knocks this moment out of the park, and for the first time we start to understand Dean as a deeply caring person. [i would argue that 1x03 where Dean bonds with the selectively mute kid gives us our first glimpse, but since this moment is shared between the brothers, it gets deeper to the core of Dean's character faster]

THIS MOMENT MAKES ME FERAL. there's no fucking WAY this could be read any other way, sorry. he softens, steels himself to tell Sam that John was the one who swung by to check on Sam bc he wants Sam to have that. he wants Sam to think John worried about him. even though it was Dean doing the worrying, and Dean doing the raising, and Dean doing his fucking best to keep the family together, he says it was John bc he knows Sam needs that. (or he thinks he knows. this is not the first or last time Dean will make a decision for Sam by withholding information from him, but it is the first time we see it onscreen.)

Sam is surprised, asks What? and Dean. Dean looks down. looks up (not at Sam, but over his shoulder. he'll get better lying to Sam's face over the years. but not yet).

Dean says, yeah. meaning, yeah, Dad was worried about you. he checked on you. kept you safe. Dean says yeah, lies right to Sam's face and Sam – Sam buys it. bc he wants to believe he's not a disappointment? even though I don't rly think Sam ever needed or wanted john's approval like Dean did. so I'm not happy w/that conclusion.

i think it's likelier that it just comes down to Sam not knowing Dean all that well. Dean isn't his brother, he's his dad and his mom and he's four years and a lifetime older. and it isn't Sam's fault that he believes this, i don't mean to say that. i love Sam. he believes Dean bc he trusts Dean, and he doesn't need any proof from Dean other than his word. (here, anyways.)

i don't have a good ending to this post that got way longer than i meant it to. i just. i really fucking love Dean Winchester. i really, really do.
