You know, I only hear out of my day long as you're a stupid **** John remillard. And why would I hear anything else? Do I have the flu, or covid?

Saturday night (16 July 2022) I go to my Brazilian friends place for a party for his wife. Tell you what, they know how to party. Very multicultural.

Sunday was a rest day, and Monday morning I head in to work for the 0830 shift....

Left my entry pass at home, got a temporary pass...

Feeling the head ache and a cough, tested myself at my desk... negative.

Great, I'll just go home and get some rest.

1500 ish, I get a message from DC, my Brazilian freind PC wife.... he's feeling tired, and tested positive after taking Monday off as well.

Well...... shit.

Symptoms wise, headache, sore throat and a cough, very occasionally. Not quite as actively alert as I usually am, but about 93%.

I say 93% because I left my work pass at home, and didn't think to bring home any of the work supplied covid RAT test kits. Bother.

Now it's 0300, ish, I'm sleeping in the spare bedroom (shitty mattress on the futon couch bed thing). And can still smell the liniment and deodorant in hete that my father in law was using over the weekend as well.

My wife, K, and EN, the father in law, didn't attend the party, and went for a drive on Sunday while I rested at home.

I'm kind of annoyed that we're out of test kits at home, wanting some panadol to help moderate the headache and any potential fever.

I did have a passing thought that if not covid, what if it's influenza.... then calmed down and squashed that line of potentially panic thought.

Sasha the fox terrier has left K in the master bedroom and snuggled up on the bed beside me, her version of time share affection.

Personally, a bit tight in the chest, a headache and wanting plain food and plenty of cold drinks (like chilled fruit juice) is more of a cold.

But I have no idea if that's precursor symptoms of covid.

I'll keep updating this, see how things go.

When I was a young adult, I had lesbian friends who were by 20 years my seniors. And I'm absolutely from the era described in the initial post.

Those older lesbian friends I had were disappointed with us, who has it so much easier to get into academics as women, who had already seen the half-assed gay marriage get ratified, and didn't go full speed for fully equal rights.

At the first pride I went to (2002), there was a lesbian comedian whose number had a section punchline that was "we're being normalized and don't know how to handle it". The skit absolutely had "don't touch my garbage" opossum energy: "Hete, this is my ghetto. Go get your own!!"

Yes, we're dwarves standing on the shoulders of giants. And to see the change since then as inexplicably large... It's weird.

When I learned about the L word (not the series, that didn't exist yet, and was an outcry years later), I was maybe 15 years old. I was several years into the experience when it finally got a name.

You couldn't google things. Google was yet to be started. But if you were patient, you could find things on altavista. And in the country, it was all there was. Not much, very slow, but it was a way.

Life is much better now, and I'm glad. but there's still so much road ahead...

Thus is the defining characteristic of gay millennials: we straddle the pre-Glee and post-Glee worlds. We went to high school when faggot wasn't even considered an F-word, when being a lesbian meant boys just didn't want you, when being nonbinary wasn't even a remote option. We grew up without queer characters in our cartoons or Nickelodeon or Disney or TGIF sitcoms. We were raised in homophobia, came of age as the world changed around us, and are raising children in an age where it's never been easier to be same-sex parents. We're both lucky and jealous. As the state of gay evolved culturally and politically, we were old enough to see it and process it and not take it for granted--old enough to know what the world was like without it. Despite the success of Drag Race, the existence of lesbian Christmas rom-coms, and openly transgender Oscar nominees, we haven't moved on from the trauma of growing up in a culture that hates us. We don't move on from trauma, really. We can't really leave it in the past. It becomes a part of us, and we move forward with it.

For LGBTQ+ milennials, our pride is couched in painful memories of a culture repulsed and frightened by queerness. That makes us skittish. It makes us loud. It makes us fear that all this progress, all this tolerance [...] can vanish as quickly as it all appeared.
