Yan Bingyun blinks when the door opens, but doesn’t look up. Whoever it is, they’ll hurt him. He doesn’t much care for who it is. He tries to listen to the conversation they have, but the wounds from today’s first visitor have yet to stop bleeding. He’s tired. He isn’t going to get out. Listening for secrets that won’t be of use after an escape that won’t happen is pointless, so Yan Bingyun doesn’t bother to do so.

“Yan Bingyun,” the man who was speaking before says. Something waves in front of his face, but Yan Bingyun doesn’t open his eyes to see what it is. “I’m Fan Xian. You blocked me on my way to the capital,” the man adds. “Do you remember?”

Yan Bingyun opens his eyes, slowly. He remembers well enough to ascertain that the man before him is indeed Fan Xian, though how Fan Xian has come to be in BeiQi is unclear.

Then Fan Xian is pulling aside his robes, clucking his tongue at the gashes from earlier. “This wound is new,” Fan Xian says, “Just now?” he asks, and Yan Bingyun wants to talk back, but he’s tired.

Fan Xian brings up the war, brings up DaQing, thanks him for spying, and Yan Bingyun reminds himself why he’s doing this, why he’s allowing them to strip away his humanity little by little. Everything is for DaQing.

“I’m the envoy to take you home,” Fan Xian says. Yan Bingyun looks at him, sees an odd, almost earnest expression in his eyes, finds his own lips curving up into a bitter smile against his will.

“You serve BeiQi,” he says, a simple statement of fact, because that’s the most obvious answer. Fan Xian has been at the capital for such a short time, the only way he could have made it so high is if he betrayed their country, betrayed DaQing.

Fan Xian’s expression goes wide-eyed for a moment, like he can’t believe Yan Bingyun doesn’t believe him. “You think I’m lying?”

“You became an envoy in just a short time?” He braces himself for hurt.

“He is the real envoy of DaQing,” Shen W-Shen-xiaojie bursts out. “He’s here to save you!”

Yan Bingyun glances at her. “Why did he hold you hostage, if he’s the envoy?”

“Shen Zhong won’t release you,” Fan Xian says. Of course not. Yan Bingyun hasn’t given up the information Shen Zhong wants yet.

Yan Bingyun fails to see the logic in this so-called rescue, if Fan Xian really is the envoy. “So you came here by yourself. How could you find me so easily under Shen Zhong’s supervision?”

He knows he’s kept in some out of the way place, that the BeiQi emperor doesn’t even know where he is. If Fan Xian is the DaQing envoy, he shouldn’t have been able to find Yan Bingyun.

Fan Xian sounds so affronted when he protests this point. “Be careful of your words, I’m smarter than him!”

Yan Bingyun huffs out a laugh. He doubts that very much. “There are many spies from DaQing here. Pretend to rescue me, and gain my trust. By the time I feel safe and contact other spies, you will arrest us all,” he says. “Is this Shen Zhong’s plan?” It’s the most obvious trap, and Fan Xian has to know that it wouldn’t have worked. He will give points for creativity. It’s different from what he’s come to expect from Shen Zhong, but not different enough that he can’t recognize it for what it is: another one of the man’s twisted mind games.

“Damn it,” Fan Xian says, and then “Persecution mania.”

Yan Bingyun doesn’t know what that is. He says as much.

Fan Xian pulls out one of his hairpins and grabs at the chains around Yan Bingyun’s ankles. “I will tell you all about my promotion after we get out and go back.”

“If you didn’t lie,” Yan Bingyun says, not actually entertaining the thought, but wanting to see how well thought out Fan Xian’s trap really is, “you should tell me how we will get out. Shen Zhong won’t let me leave easily.” Not without the names Yan Bingyun refuses to give up. DaQing has worked too hard to get their spies into place for Yan Bingyun to break at the thought of a rescue that isn’t even real.

It seems Fan Xian has an answer prepared for even this question, though he heaves out a put-upon sigh to give it. “I have a subordinate named Wang Qinian.”

Yan Bingyun’s eyes snap to Fan Xian. “Wang Qinian? The counting clerk from the first ministry?” He’s with BeiQi now too? Yan Bingyun knows the man is easily tempted into doing things for money, but he’d never thought that Wang Qinian could be tempted to treason.

“He works for me now,” Fan Xian says, like Yan Bingyun hasn’t already figured it out. “I asked him to find help before I came here.”

Yan Bingyun wants to laugh. This whole sham is ridiculous. Where would Fan Xian find help in BeiQi to help break out an enemy spy if he isn’t also with BeiQi? He says as much to Fan Xian.

The other man just rolls his eyes, grabbing the shackle around Yan Bingyun’s wrist. “Now I know why they gave you such a heavy penalty,” he says, picking the lock on Yan Bingyun’s right wrist. “Xiao-Yan-gongzi, your personality is not adorable at all.” Yan Bingyun takes a deep breath so that he doesn’t wince when Fan Xian pushes at his wrist roughly. He hasn’t let himself think of the life he left behind in DaQing. He hasn’t thought about it since he crossed the border, really, despite how content he’d been with his lot then. He would give it all up again for DaQing. Everything is for DaQing.

“Be careful,” Shen W--xiaojie snaps, swiping at Fan Xian’s arm.

“Sorry,” Fan Xian says, not sounding sorry at all. “I forgot your wound.” He picks the last cuff, then adds, “also, I must take back my words. You’re adorable for someone,” as he stands up.

Yan Bingyun’s gaze flickers down. He wants, desperately, to be able to give Shen Wan’er what she deserves. He is not used to wanting things. Especially things he cannot have, things he does not deserve. Shen Wan’er deserves someone better than him, and he cannot betray DaQing for the younger sister of BeiQi’s imperial guard chief.

It’s easier to lie to her, to crush her hope and his along with it, than it is to entertain the thought of her leaving behind her brother and her country to come with him, because there is no way he could stay with her, no matter how much he wants it. DaQing comes before any personal desires. Everything is for DaQing.

“I’ve made it very clear. I got close to you before to get military intelligence through your connection to your brother.” That is not a lie, not really. He’d just managed to fall in love during the process. “I never had feelings for you.” That is a lie, but he’s never going to tell her that, nor anyone else. If he repeats it enough, he may even begin to believe it himself.

Yan Bingyun sees the momentary flash of heartbreak in her eyes before Shen W--Shen-xiaojie steadies herself with a deep breath. “Don’t talk too much,” she warns. “You’re weak now.”

She doesn’t believe him yet, but she needs to. Being close to him will result in scorn and suspicion and likely death for her. “I’ve been lying to you,” he repeats.

“I know,” she replies. “I wanted to hate you,” she adds, like it’s a shameful secret. “But when I saw you getting injured, it broke my heart.”

Yan Bingyun knows. The days when Shen Zhong would bring in his sister in the hopes of using her against Yan Bingyun had been the worst days, not because the physical pain was any worse, but because Shen Wan’er would beg for him to give up the names and for her brother to stop hurting him within the same breath. She would sob until she passed out, and Shen Zhong would blame it on him, as if Yan Bingyun had wanted her there in the first place.

“Stupid woman,” he says, because if he doesn’t he’ll say something he’ll regret, something that gives away how much lying he’s done to make her stop loving him, even when it doesn’t work, even when she insists on loving him still, on bringing him bandages and medicine for the wounds her brother inflicts every day, as if she could heal each broken bone and bloodied gash with love alone.

It doesn’t work even now, because Shen-xiaojie stands up and says she’ll get him some water and walks to the kitchen area of his prison. Yan Bingyun watches her go, but his eyes flick back to Fan Xian as he returns.

“She’s not stupid,” Fan Xian says, “she loves you too much,” and Yan Bingyun knows that, knows that she’s likely one of the smartest women he’s ever met, but that does not mean that she cannot be dumb in this regard, in loving a man who cannot love her back.

When Yan Bingyun doesn’t give him a response, Fan Xian flaps his hand dismissively and returns to the front space. Yan Bingyun stays where he is until Fan Xian comes back over. “Come sit at the table, you’ll be able to drink your water better there.”

Yan Bingyun forces himself to his feet, not letting any of the pain he feels show on his face. He forces his hands to be steady, forces his legs to move, and when he near-collapses at the table, he sits perfectly straight again, pretending for the sake of what little dignity he has left that he intended to sit right then instead of lowering himself down more easily. It’s odd, moving without the shackles at his wrists and ankles. He can feel their phantom weight, as ever-present as the fire in his chest and the ache in his back.

There’s a commotion outside, but then Shen W-xiaojie kneels next to him with a cup and an apology. “There’s no hot water in here,” she says, like Yan Bingyun didn’t already know that. “Just take it for now.”

Yan Bingyun doesn’t thank her, but he does take the water. Then he tries again to make her stop. “Your brother and I won’t stop until we kill each other,” he says. “If you let me go, have you considered the consequences?” He knows he’s arguing to be kept prisoner for longer, but Shen-xiaojie won’t be forced to choose between the man she loves, however misguided she may be in that love, and the man who raised her.

“If you kill my brother one day,” Shen-xiaojie says, “kill me as well.”

Yan Bingyun doesn’t have a chance to respond before Fan Xian butts in. “Shen-xiaojie did you such a big favor,” he says. I know, Yan Bingyun doesn’t say. I’m trying to save her. “Why must you be so heartless to her? And guys, can we discuss this after we get back to my place? There’s hot water.” he adds, like it’s a selling point.

The door slams open before either one of them can respond. Fan Xian shoots to his feet and Shen-xiaojie snatches up her knife to run over to him. Yan Bingyun doesn’t react as Shen Zhong walks into the room.

“Hold me,” Shen W-xiaojie says, pulling Fan Xian’s arm around herself and putting the knife into his hands. The blade is facing out, away from her neck as she starts what would be a very good act if Fan Xian were going along with it. “Ge! They won’t let me go unless they get out!”

Yan Bingyun looks away as Fan Xian puts the knife down.

Shen Zhong turns and shuts the door. He walks to the center of the room, silent. Dangerous. Yan Bingyun feels his heartbeat speed up, though he doesn’t let it show. Weakness will be exploited, and Fan Xian has already left him unbalanced, which was likely their plan all along.

“How silly you are,” Shen Zhong reprimands his sister. “They’re spies from the enemy state!” He points at Fan Xian for emphasis. Yan Bingyun swallows, looking away again. Maybe it will finally sink in. Maybe she’ll leave him behind.

“I…I was threatened,” she tries to protest, but it’s weak, and Shen Zhong easily plows over it.

“I’m not stupid!” he shouts. He looks at the floor for a minute, resettles himself, then looks back up at the three of them. “Fan-daren,” he says, calmer. “Well done!” He chuckles, a sound that has the hairs on the back of Yan Bingyun’s neck standing on edge.

Fan Xian grins. “You come in alone. Aren’t you worried about being threatened by me?”

Shen Zhong returns Fan Xian’s smirk. “I’ve placed an order. If you threaten them with me, arrows will fly in like clouds. I will be shot too.”

“Ge!” Shen-xiaojie protests.

Fan Xian laughs. It sounds forced. “Why, Shen-daren, you have to return Yan Bingyun to us sooner or later. Now I’ve found him. Why don’t you let me take him away?”

Shen Zhong purses his lips. “Alright. As long as he gives me the name list of the spies in Shangjing, I’ll let him go immediately.”

Fan Xian takes a deep breath in, looking over at Yan Bingyun. “Let’s tell him?” he asks, like he’s suggesting they have sweet buns with dinner. Yan Bingyun doesn’t even have it in him to be surprised at the betrayal. He’s tired.

He considers for a moment, realizes they’re going to hurt him no matter what he answers, and decides to have a last bit of fun before he can no longer think from pain.

“Alright,” he says. Fan Xian looks shocked.

Shen Zhong’s expectant look turns pleased and he sits down on the table in front of Yan Bingyun, an obvious power play.

Yan Bingyun tilts his head towards him. “All of those ministers of the Sixth Bureau are our spies in BeiQi. You kill them all, so you’re building a peace and ridding the state of evil.” He faces forward as Shen Zhong processes the blatant lie he’s just been told.

Yan Bingyun doesn’t react as Shen Zhong flips the tables except to smile, faintly.

“Listen!” Shen Zhong shouts at his sister. “Listen to what he’s saying!”

Shen-xiaojie looks down at the floor. “I was caught by them,” she says, but it’s clear she’s only saying it because she has nothing else she could say.

Yan Bingyun takes one last deep breath, not letting it shudder the way it wants to, and braces himself for pain.

Shen Zhong straightens his robe. “Fan-daren, you may go now,” he says, gesturing at the door.

Fan Xian points at Yan Bingyun. “I must take him with me,” he replies.

“Not now,” Shen Zhong returns.

“It isn’t a request,” Fan Xian says.

Shen Zhong cocks his head. “Then, none of you can go today. Guards!”

The door bursts open, the city guards filling into a loose semi-circle around them.

Fan Xian folds his hands behind his back. “If you do something to me here, aren’t you afraid it’ll cause a new national war?”

Shen Zhong takes a sword from the nearest guard and lays it against Fan Xian’s throat. “Who knows you’re here? Fan-daren disappeared. We searched for him, and finally found his body. I was upset, so I promised to find the murderer to avenge you.”

Shen-xiaojie hisses out “Hold me!” grabbing Fan Xian’s arm and putting the knife back into his hand. Yan Bingyun isn’t exactly sure what it is she’s trying to accomplish. From his face, it’s clear Fan Xian doesn’t either.

“Start,” Shen Zhong orders, but before the guards can make it a full step forward, there’s a shout for Shen-daren in the courtyard. A guard whispers something into Shen Zhong’s ear that makes his glare even worse.

Fan Xian smirks in return. “Guys, wait a moment. My helper is here now,” he says, handing Shen-xiaojie back her knife, heedless of Shen Zhong’s sword at his neck.

Yan Bingyun isn't sure who his helper could be, given that even Shen Zhong defers to this person at least partially.

He says as much, and Fan Xian smirks again. “I’m popular,” he snarks.

Yan Bingyun thinks, not for the first time, that if this rescue is truly real, it is the worst rescue that he could have imagined. He ignores Fan Xian quietly reassuring Shen-xiaojie, straining his ears to instead listen for Shen Zhong’s conversation with Fan Xian’s mysterious helper.

He doesn’t quite catch everything, but he hears “Saintess,” and knows that Fan Xian must be with BeiQi now, if only because there’s no way Haitang Duoduo would deign to help anyone from DaQing.

Saintess’s reply is just as garbled, but he catches “Let them.” He realizes that this is likely a test of Shen Zhong’s loyalty to the Empress Dowager.

Shen Zhong’s reply is still quiet, but he assumes it’s him refusing to let Yan Bingyun go.

Then Saintess says “His Majesty’s order.” Yan Bingyun already knows that it’s a bad idea to have said that. Shen Zhong serves the Empress Dowager, not the Emperor. Shen Zhong must reply, because Saintess raises her voice. “It’s the empress dowager’s order as well,” she calls.

There’s a pause, some more muffled words, and then Shen Zhong calls to let them go.

Fan Xian grins. “I told you I was here to rescue you,” he says, clapping his hands together like a child. “Let’s go, Saintess will have prepared a carriage for us.” He leans down in front of Yan Bingyun. “I saw you collapse into this spot earlier; don’t pretend like you can walk on your own. Now c’mon, up you go.” He grabs Yan Bingyun’s forearms, clasping tight enough to have leverage but loose enough that it doesn’t truly hurt, and pulls him to his feet. Yan Bingyun hides his wince. Weakness will be exploited, after all.

Fan Xian stops at the door, turning to look at Shen-xiaojie. “Thank you for your help today,” he calls, and the ghost of a smile flickers across her face.

Haitang Duoduo is leaning against a carriage when Yan Bingyun and Fan Xian leave the courtyard. “There’s space enough for three in there. I’ll take you to your hotel.”

Fan Xian nods. “Thank you,” he says as he helps Yan Bingyun climb into the carriage.

Yan Bingyun doesn’t let himself think about how this is the first time that he’s been outside of the confines of that house since he was captured. He doesn’t let himself believe that this is real. He can’t let his guard down, because letting his guard down means he’ll be hurt. Letting his guard down means he gets caught, and it means that BeiQi tries even harder to bleed information from him.

So he doesn’t let himself believe this is real, even as the sounds of city life wash through the thin carriage walls, even as Fan Xian leans against the side of the carriage, even as his chest burns and his limbs ache. He doesn’t let himself relax, doesn’t let himself lose his posture, because if he loses his posture, he admits that he’s safe, and he isn’t safe. He doubts he’ll ever be safe again.

Yan Bingyun’s head was kind of hard to get into at first, but then I sat down and watched this scene, pausing every time the subtitles changed and writing down exactly what they said, and then writing Yan Bingyun’s internal dialogue about it, and it went much easier. By doing that, I wrote this entire thing in the span of one afternoon/evening. The only reason it took that long is because the pizza for dinner came halfway through and i decided pizza was more important than Yan Bingyun’s internal angst

chapter 2 will come out on the 7th, for and if ao3 gets its act together, this should be posted there too. The link will be in the reblog to my main.

Personal side note you can skip, but I edited this during my 2 ½ hour long government classes where my teacher lectures for over half the class about a subject that we already took both notes and a quiz over, so if I didn’t edit, I would have fallen asleep, and he already has his eye on me bc I don’t stand for the pledge of allegiance, so that just wasn’t happening. Also, I wrote this a literal month in advance, and it is the most edited piece of writing I have ever made in my entire life, including things that are worth large percentages of my grade.

the one where Jake learns to trust his daughter (or not)

“That’s not fair!”

Jake’s heart breaks every time he’s a witness to his two precious girls fighting. And since Ana recently got into the rebellious stage of her teen life, it’s happening quite often now and Jake hates it.

“I’m not changing my mind, Ana! You’re not going to this party and I don’t want to hear any more of it!” Amy’s not shouting but her voice is so sharp it could cut. This is the authoritative Amy Santiago-Peralta speaking.

“No one ever invites me to this kind of stuff and do you wanna know why?!” his dear Anana’s eyes are full of angry tears now, her cheeks are red and puffy from crying and Jake thinks he’s too soft to have this kind of conversation with his kid. “Because guess what - both of my parents are fucking cops! That’s why!”

Well, this is new.

“Anana! Mind your language!” The shock he’s feeling is evident in his tone. “If you are not able to maintain a certain level of respect for your mother, this conversation is over. Now.” Jake is not the shouting type of parent, so he reprimands his daughter very calmly. And even though the disappointment and look of betrayal on Ana’s face almost breaks him, he doesn’t give up - there are boundaries that cannot be crossed, and using such hurtful words definitely does so.

Ana looks him deep in the eyes for a few more seconds before she turns around and runs to her room, closing the door with a loud thump, and making Amy jump. She’s still shocked from the turn their conversation took.

“Can you believe it? I feel like I don’t recognize her anymore.” His wife starts to voice her frustration, caused by their daughter’s behavior, but Jake’s buried too deep in his thoughts to pay any attention to her rant.

“I think we’re making a mistake, Ames.” He stops her mid-sentence.

“What?!”

And there she is, back to her furious mode.

“Are you saying what I think you’re saying? You think we should let her go to that boy’s party? That’s ridiculous. What if she drinks herself unconscious? What if she does something stupid?” Suddenly Amy’s eyes get wide and there’s a look of terror on her face. “What if she does drugs?!”

“First of all, Ames, none of this will happen ‘cause we raised her better than this. She’s our daughter and we need to learn to trust her. Secondly, at least we know this guy - it’s Tommy, for God’s sake! You adore him - he aces every year’s spelling bee, he does math camps and he helped you recently with your crossword puzzle - he’s our daughter’s best friend of your dreams! Besides I don’t think this kind of guy is gonna organize a crazy party.”

“If our daughter is as naive as you, I’m worried even more. You’re so easy to fool, Peralta.” Jake’s a bit taken aback by his wife’s insult. “I’ve known guys like him - they charm you with their knowledge of physics or chemistry fun facts and than bam! There they are - trying to get to your pants!”

“God, who have you been with?” Jake’s disgust quickly changes into anger “Who was he? Did he hurt you? Do you need me to teach this guy a lesson?”

Amy’s expression softens a bit at her husband’s concern.

“I was twelve years old and all he wanted was a kiss but it was enough to scare me. Tony beat him up. Got suspended for it.”

Jake feels a sudden wave of affection towards Amy’s younger brother.

“Good to know. Anyway, I think we can trust Anana with this. She’s sixteen and it’s true what she said about her peers not inviting her to parties, you know it.”

There was an incident few months ago, when a boy from Ana’s class got arrested by cops from Amy’s precinct and it was Captain Santiago-Peralta herself who had a talk with him about the consequences of possessing drugs. Life has been hell for Ana since.

“Well, it’s not her fault that boy was trying to destroy his life.”

“True, but it’s her who suffers now from it.”

There is a moment of silence between them as they stare at each other - Jake knows it’s a hard task convincing his wife about something like this, but he is also certain about the rightness of his move. He’s not going to back out. And Amy must see the determination in his eyes cause she eventually buys in.

“Fine. But it’s your responsibility altogether - if she ends up in a hospital from alcohol poisoning, it’ll be you who sits by her bed and worries about her.” They are both aware that Amy’s bluffing right now - there’s no way she’d be able to sit still, if one of her children was suffering.

“Nothing bad will happen - wanna bet on it?” There’s a hint of excitement in Jake’s voice at the thought of rivalry.

“Jake, I am not betting on our child’s well-being.”

“Right, yeah, sorry. Got a bit ahead of myself. That’s not good parenting.”

Amy shakes her head in an act of resignation.

“I can’t believe I’m saying yes to this. It’s crazy. I’m so scared.” Her voice is quiet as she speaks her fears. Jake has known from the beginning of this argument that Amy’s opposition is fueled only by anxiety. But that doesn’t change the fact that he believes that this kind of behavior is wrong. They have to trust their soon-to-be-an-adult daughter. No matter how difficult it is for them. And all he can do now is offer his wife some comfort in a hard moment as this one, when it’s the first time their child goes to an almost adult-like party.

So he embraces her, kisses her temple and mutters into her hair soothing words.

“Anana will be fine. It’s completely natural for you to be worried, but she’ll be fine. She’s a smart girl.”

Five days after that conversation, Jake thinks he couldn’t be more wrong as he watches his daughter puking into their neighbours bushes.

He made a deal with Ana, that she can go to the party but he’ll pick her up at exactly 1 am and the moment she got into the car he knew she was totally drunk. It was Tommy who helped her out of the house and Jake should be probably thankful for it but instead of showing him his gratitude, he gave him a stern look of disappointment. The boy paled at the view and muttered quietly “Sorry, Mr. Peralta” before running back to his house.

And now Jake finds himself standing behind his precious offspring, who is pouring the contents of her stomach out of herself, with a hurtful expression on his face. There are so many emotions bustling inside of him - there’s anger of course, a bit of disappointment - there’s no point it denying it - but mostly worry and compassion, because his kid is in pain. There is no need for him to hold back her hair - she has it tied up in a bun, that reminds him so much of her mother. So he just stands there feeling a bit weird.

She finally finishes throwing up and he squats beside her.

“Better?” he pats her shoulder awkwardly. He’s taken care of many people who suffered from too much drinking but it’s a whole different experience when it’s his kid.

“I’m so sorry, dad. I know it was you who convinced mum and now I’ve disappointed you.”

“Not gonna argue with that. But we’re gonna talk about it in the morning, Ana.”

The absence of his pet name for her doesn’t get unnoticed as a quiet sob escapes her mouth.

“I’m really sorry. I’m so stupid.”

“Hey, don’t call my daughter stupid!” He cracks a smile in attempt to cheer her up a little, and strokes her hair. He can’t stand her seeing sad, she’s his precious little girl. “You’re young, not stupid. And this -” he points at the vomit in front of them “- this is just a mistake. A mistake that you’re gonna learn from, right?” she nods biddably. “Come on, let’s go home before your mum gets suspicious.” He makes an attempt to stand up but Ana’s tuck on his jacket stops him.

“I love you, dad.”

“I love you too, Ananas.” he plants a kiss on her forehead and offers her a hand to help her stand up.

They sneak into the house without waking Amy up, and Jake thinks it’s one of his greatest achievements as a father.

“Babe, why is our daughter up so early after a party and mowing the lawn?”

Jake’s making coffee in the kitchen when he hears his wife’s sleepy voice. He turns around to greet her with a quick kiss on her cheek and smiles at the sight in front of him. Amy looks beautiful as always, even though she’s wearing not very fancy plaid pajamas and a silk robe on top. Her hair is already combed regardless her waking up just minutes ago.

And she’s right - it is very early in the morning, Ana doesn’t get up this early even on week days, not to mention the weekend.

“Well since I’m not allowed to spill anything regarding last night’s events, all I’m gonna say, is that what you see is me enforcing some good old days discipline.”

There is now a playful smirk on Amy’s face as she approaches her husband with a glint in her eyes.

“So, you’re saying this is some sort of punishment for Ana?”

“That’s one way to put it. I spend most of the night thinking what would be a perfect lesson for her and I came up with the best idea. The effect of consuming too much alcohol is a penalty itself. All I have to do is to make sure she remembers this hangover.”

Yes, he has a whole list of chores for his little Anana to do and mowing the lawn at 7.30 on Saturday morning is one of the most pleasurable ones.

He watches their daughter from the coziness of their kitchen, as she dutifully performs the task he gave her and he’s not able to fight the proud smirk that creeps it’s way on his face. He shouldn’t be so smug about this, right?

But his ego is stroked even more when Amy speaks, hugging him from behind and kissing his neck.

“Mmm you’re such a brilliant dad, I think it turns me on a little.” She almost purrs into his shoulder blade, making him beam.

“So, you’re saying you have a thing for dads?” He chuckles before turning around to face her and his hands immediately find their way to her waist.

“Nah, just the father of my children.”

And that’s it for Jake, he can no longer hold back as he dips in for a kiss. His wife responds very eagerly to his actions and it surprises him a bit even though it shouldn’t. His hands slide beneath the top of her pajamas and he starts caressing her back with his palms, knowing how much she enjoys it. It’s a completely innocent touch but it earns him a moan from Amy nonetheless.

After a moment of hot kisses, hectic touches and whimpering sounds it’s Amy who eventually comes to her senses even if just for a second.

“Atlas is still asleep and Ana is gonna be busy for at least half an hour or so. You’re thinking what I’m thinking?” There is a radiant smile on her pretty face, her cheeks are pink, eyes are shining and there is no way Jake could ever say no to her.

“Definitely.”

And so he dutifully follows his wife to their bedroom.

(Next time Jake picks Anana up after a party, he still can tell she’s tipsy but she hides it really well. What she can’t hide though is a big hickey on her neck and this time it’s Amy who has to calm him down when they have another difficult conversation with their daughter the next morning.)

The first time he sees it, he’s scrolling through Instagram while eating his breakfast.

Tag someone who would love it here, the caption on an Instagram post says, accompanied by a thumbnail of a lady straddling what looks to be a giant rod. Louis stops scrolling out of habit, taking a bite out of his bowl of cereal.

He doesn’t realize what, exactly, he’s watching, until the one minute Instagram video starts replaying itself. This time, Louis finds himself marginally more awake, watching a bunch of people straddling giant penises, taking photos of giant penises, reading fucking signs from penises on the side of the road. Because, apparently, Instagram decided to show him an ad about a penis park in South Korea.

“What the fuck,” he declares, “is this.”

From somewhere to his left, Clifford barks. He’s eating his breakfast as well, the dog food Louis had put in his doggy bowl, but he always likes to bark whenever Louis talks out loud. He probably thinks Louis’ offering him leftovers or something.

“Good boy,” Louis says absently, his eyes still glued to his phone. He doesn’t really understand why he’s seeing this right now. It’s arse-o’-clock in the fucking morning. He doesn’t wanna see any penises while eating breakfast unless he’s about to get laid.

Besides, how does Instagram even know that he likes dick, anyway?

“Cliff, do you think Instagram knows that I’m gay?” He asks absently, his thumb keeping the screen lit up. The video is playing for the third time, now. It’s getting really weird. The people at Instagram probably think he’s never seen a penis before. Louis should really scroll past now.

Clifford barks again. Louis hums. “Yeah, maybe,” he says nonsensically, before scrolling down. He’s about to look at the next photo on his feed when he catches sight of the account that posted it.

“Ladbible,” Louis frowns. “Huh.” Guess it’s not an Instagram ad after all.

That’s strange, because he knows the ladbible Instagram account--he’d followed them a few months ago, because they’d been posting videos about football and other things related to Louis’ interest. Now, when he clicks on the username and scrolls through the account, he finds nothing but pictures of memes. And not even good memes.

“Huh,” Louis says again. He’s about to click unfollow when Clifford starts whining, scratching at the door. He sighs, sets his phone on the table, and goes to let his dog out.

He promptly forgets about the ladbible until a few days later, while sitting on Liam’s couch and watching a film. It’s one that Louis has seen countless times, so he has no qualms about opening his various social media. He only ever likes the action scenes anyway.

He’s doing just that now, opening Instagram and liking a bunch of photos when he spots it. I care deeply about like 5 people in my life and about 500-600 dogs I’ve never met on Instagram, the photo reads.

He frowns at it, confused, before he realizes that ladbible posted it. “The fuck,” he mutters to himself, then leans over to elbow Liam. “Liam, look at this.”

Liam, who’d been watching the film, turns to look at Louis’ phone. “Um?” He says.

“Isn’t it dumb?” Louis asks, clicking on the comments and scrolling through it. He can’t believe this shit even got 82,000 likes. There is a lot of better content out there that deserves 82,000 likes.

“It’s relatable...?” Liam replies, sounding a bit unsure. Louis huffs.

“No, it’s not,” he says. “You’re telling me you only love six people in your life and six hundred dogs?’

Liam shrugs. “Dogs are cute.”

“Yes, but that doesn’t mean you only care about six people,” Louis argues. “Like, you’ve got your mum, and your dad, then Ruth and Nicola. Then you’ve got your nan. Your aunts and uncles. Your cousins. Andy. Me and Zayn. That’s easily more than six people.”

Liam looks amused. “Tommo, you do know what a meme is, right?

“Of course I do, Payno,” Louis says, rolling his eyes, “but this is really just shitty.”

He doesn’t really think much about his next few moves, just taps on the comment bar and types out, As much as I love dogs, it’s posts like this that show how the Lad Bible is going down hill. Sad to see ! He presses send, then scrolls past the post, going back to liking a bunch of photos.

After that, ladbible pops up much more frequently on his feed. It’s really rather annoying, because Louis will just be scrolling peacefully down, trying to update himself on the lives of his sisters and his mates, when there’ll be a random meme in the middle of it all. And it’s not even good memes--they’re shitty ones, some of them even screenshotted and reposted from Twitter or Facebook. Louis finds himself irrationally annoyed by them.

He knows, at the back of his mind, that the logical thing to do here is to just unfollow, so he never sees their content again. But Louis has never been logical, and hate-following someone just sounds like a lot more fun than unfollowing. At least there’s something he can take his annoyance out on when he’s had a pretty shit day.

It’s pretty obvious to Louis that the person currently running ladbible knows nothing about being a lad. Lads often talk about football and sports and doing fun, adventurous things. Lads do not post six versions of the Spongebob meme, or videos of fluffy kittens and puppies. Lads also do not post videos about eating penis cakes.

(Although Louis admittedly watches that one.)

It’s not all bad, though. There are times when ladbible posts something relevant to Louis’ interests. A video of some blokes doing pretty sick skateboarding tricks. A video of a bunch of men doing stunts for an action film. A video about a drive-through for Gregg’s.

Louis shows his appreciation for that by commenting Finally some REAL news on here.

Ladbible follows it up by posting a photo of lightning hitting water with the caption Fuck these 6 fish in particular - God.

Louis rolls his eyes. Not funny . he comments. Get better.

It all comes to a head a few days later, when ladbible posts a photo of Drake. Why does Drake look like he bought a drink from across the bar and now he’s just waiting to be acknowledged, the caption says, and okay, fine, Louis can kind of see it, but really, this is just unnecessary. What did Drake even do to ladbible? Drake is more of a lad than, well, ladbible.

Who runs this shit ? He comments, during the half-time of a footie game. Content used to be looooooooooads better.

He locks his phone after that, focuses his attention back to the game. Man U is currently tied with Chelsea, and they’re about to do some penalties. There’s a big chance that Man U might lose this match. Louis might actually cry if they do.

Luckily, they don’t, and Louis finds himself jumping on his sofa happily, celebrating the one-point lead Man U had. He pulls his phone out of the couch cushions, just so he doesn’t actually crush it, pauses when he sees he’s got a reply from ladbible.

@louist91 This is Harry :D it reads. Who are you?

Louis blinks at it, slowly settles back down on the couch. Ladbible replied to him. What the fuck.

He’s never really thought about what he’d do should this happen--Ladbible has about four-point-five million followers on Instagram, after all. Each of their posts gets an average of eight hundred comments. Louis had always thought his comments would disappear under all the others.

Except. Ladbible saw his comment and replied. What the actual fuck.

There’s only one thing to do. Louis takes a deep breath, taps on the comment bar. He’s never been one to quit when confronted, and he’s certainly not one to run away with his tail between his legs.

Hi Harry, he types out cautiously. I’m Louis . Why is the content on here shit ?

He sends it, watches as it appears under the other comments. The post he’d commented on is getting quite a bit of attention now, so Louis thinks that maybe ladbible--Harry--won’t find his comment anymore.

But he does. Hi Louis! the comment says. it’s not shit, it’s funny. :D

Apparently, Harry is an avid smiley face user. Who knew. It’s shit, Louis replies, his fingers flying furiously over the keyboard. What happened to all the content about footie and going on trips around the world?

Niall does those! :D comes the reply, a few seconds later.

Where’s Niall then ?

Southeast Asia. Harry says. He asked me to update his account while he’s there.

Louis hums. How long will he be there ?

Six months, the comment says.

Louis’ eyes widen. Six months?! He has to deal with shitty memes for six months?!

I have to deal with shitty memes for six months ? he types out, because he’s not very good at keeping thoughts like this to himself.

If you don’t like them just unfollow the account , Harry replies, and the words in Louis’ head sound a bit angry. Condescending. or better yet, make your own account.

He’s so--Louis finds himself getting riled up. Is it so wrong to want good Instagram content? To get what he joined Instagram for? Harry isn’t even the original owner of the account. Who the fuck does he think he is, telling Louis to unfollow for not posting the content he wants? If anything, Louis should be the angry one. Louis knows what ladbible should be posting, and this guy Harry is out here, just fucking everything up. He signed up for cool, laddy content. Not shitty Twitter Screenshots and six versions of that damned Spongebob meme.

“Fine,” he mutters to himself. “Fine.” He comments the same thing on the post, locking his phone and placing it on the coffee table. If Harry wants him to make his own account, Louis will damn well makes his own account. And it will be much better than the shit Harry posts on a daily basis.

Cost of Freedom (11/??)

Summary: In which Ran visits Shinichi. Prison ! AU

[Beginning] [Previous Chapter] [Next Chapter]

Seventeen months ago:

“I didn’t do it.”

Saguru puts a hand to his forehead, rubbing at the creases in his forehead. He’s tired, having been working this case for over a month now, his eyes heavy in their sockets, begging him to rest. The only thing however, is that Hakuba Saguru does not have time for sleep.

In between attending KID heists, school work and trying to prove the innocence of one of the only people he has ever truly gotten along with, it is difficult to relax, to rest.

Saguru doesn’t quite want to sleep if it means waking up to this. The school work is easy - he almost thinks he should skip class for a while until everything returns to normal and Kudo-kun goes back to being a regular high schooler.

“I know you didn’t,” Saguru says, staring across at Kudo, smiling in what he hopes is a reassuring manner. It has never once crossed his mind that the other teen is actually guilty, he won’t believe it - not ever - because it’s just not the type of person Kudo is. “And I’ll prove it.”

From the cell he is being held in, awaiting a trial that Saguru will make sure ends with an innocent verdict, Kudo grins. He doesn’t look nervous, probably because he knows that he has done nothing wrong, that there is nothing for them to convict him of.

It’s just circumstantial evidence that has been found at each of the murder scenes. Kudo Shinichi is not a murderer, all Saguru needs to do is prove it.

“I know you will,” Kudo says, sitting back against the wall. “I believe in your skills as a detective.”

Saguru nods, and when he leaves, it is with determination weighing down on his shoulders, feeling almost as if it is the world he needs to carry. He feels like Atlas, holding the world up, the strain against it hurting but something only he can do.

He does not visit Kudo Shinichi again.

“Ran.”

Mouri Ran looks up, glances at Shinichi as he sits opposite her, and smiles.

There is a sadness lurking behind his eyes as he smiles back, something that’s only developed since she’s started visiting him, but Ran tries not to overthink it. Instead, she leans forward, takes his hand, and prepares for another visit.

(She attempts to forget that her visits are numbered but it is a difficult task.)

“Shinichi,” she replies, rubbing circles on his palms, “how are you doing?”

“I’m okay,” a lie, “this place is bearable, you know?”

There had been a time when Shinichi had not lied to her, but Ran knows that this is not the truth anymore. For someone who’d once valued the truth, he gives her nothing but falsehoods, words designed to offer reassurance where there is none.

Ran fills in the gaps: Shinichi is not doing well, and he is not coping.

“I’m glad.” She doesn’t call him out on it though, if it makes him feel better to know that she is reassured by his words, then she’d let him tell her a million lies. As long as she knows the truth, how he is really doing. At first, when he’d shut her out, she’d been left with a bitterness in her mouth, betrayal stinging her over and over again like a particularly malevolent wasp.

Then she’d managed to make him cave through phone calls and letters, until he’d finally sent out her first visiting order. She’d been uncertain at first whether he’d done what they’d accused him of, but the moment she had seen him, she had known.

Known that he was innocent.

“Tou-san’s still working on your case,” Ran says, searching for things to say.

It’s always difficult trying to find what they can and cannot talk about. School and life outside, no matter how much Shinichi asks, isn’t something she can go into. She cannot bring herself to remind him of all the things he is missing.

“He is…?” Shinichi says, and his smile flickers, almost as if he is battling against a frown. “He won’t find anything, you know. Not now.”

Ran knows that it’s unlikely that after a year they’ll find any new leads on Shinichi’s case, but she and her father haven’t given up - won’t give up on it. Even if her dad has tried to talk her out of looking into it further, he’s never told her to stop, and he’s never put the case files back onto the shelves.

“We will.” Ran says, although she can hear her own uncertainty. It’s not an easy case, someone has been thorough in making him seem culpable. “It’s just taking time, leave it to us, okay?”

Shinichi grimaces. And Ran realises it’s going to be one of those visits. One where he tries to push her away again - he’s never been good at fooling her, maybe to others he is unreadable, but Ran has spent far too long by his side to be fooled by pretend grins and empty words.

“I want you to drop the case.” Shinichi says, and Ran has to pretend it does not hurt as much as it does. It leaves a gaping wound in her chest, as if he has torn her heart out and is squeezing it before her eyes, waiting for her to crumble.

“I won’t.” Her voice is firm. They’ve had this conversation countless times and frankly, Ran’s tired of it. She wants to have nice conversations, wants to hear about him, the book he’s most recently read - she misses when he would gush over Sherlock Holmes to her.

Now instead of being faced with one truth, she is subjected to several lies that she has to sift through herself. This is not how their relationship is meant to work - and it hurts to see that it has deteriorated so much.

“Ran.” Shinichi says, “Please. You need to just let it go. There is no evidence that will prove my innocence.”

He pauses, chokes on words, before steeling himself. Well, Ran thinks, she’s not a Karate champion for nothing, she’s capable of taking whatever hits are frown at her. She can deflect them and she’s not afraid to throw them back.

“I did it.” He practically spits the words out, as if the words burn his tongue as he forms them, poison sizzling against muscle. “I killed those people, so stop trying to prove that I didn’t.”

Ran leans forward, and cups his cheek, and smiles. It’s so like him, she thinks, to tear himself apart simply because he thinks it will benefit her. She just hopes that he can understand, why she won’t let him hurt himself like that.

“Shinichi,” she stares into his eyes, keeping his gaze until he glances away, “I trust you, and I always will. But if you think you can convince me that you committed a crime like this, I can only say that I will never believe it.”

Shinichi pulls at his collar, and for a moment Ran sees purple bruises, many of them fading into a splotchy yellow. It makes her feel slightly sick, makes her want to grab onto his sleeve and drag him home so that he doesn’t have to deal with whatever is hurting him anymore.

“You are wasting your time here,” Shinichi says, “you should be outside trying to move on.”

There’s only two problems with that, Ran thinks.

Firstly, she can’t leave Shinichi behind, it’d be impossible to cut him out of her life, not after all of these years watching him out of the corner of her eye, not after loving him for this long.

Secondly - she doesn’t want to move on. Not unless she really has to.

“I’m not leaving you behind.” Ran says.

“Don’t be an idiot,” Shinichi narrows his eyes, turns away from her. “It’s only going to hurt you more if you keep coming to visit.”

She does not care much for the pain she might feel. Ran would rather see the two of them through to the end, even if it means turning her heart into dust, emotions aflame as if they’ve been set alight with gasoline.

Ran does not have time to respond, not before the shouting starts. It’s loud, and when Ran turns her head, eyes widening, she realises that the man looks scarily like Shinichi. It does not take long for her to add a name to the face - Kuroba Kaito, phantom thief KID - and it takes significantly less time to realise that he is bleeding, raw emotion replacing blood in the room.

“Kaito…” Shinichi mumbles, from behind her, and when Ran glances at him, she realises that he has gone pale. He is wincing.

He was your friend and he’s innocent. He’s going to die.

KID says the words that Ran has been too scared to say - Shinichi is going to die. She’s known since his trial, has known that there has been a countdown over his head, the number lessening with every passing day, but she has never let herself vocalise it. The moment she does, it becomes real.

“I am going to die.” Shinichi says once the shouting has stopped. He leans back against his chair, pulling his hand away from her. Ran flinches, scratches at one of her arms in an attempt to calm herself down. “There is nothing you can do that will change that.”

“I’ll get mum to appeal against the death penalty, we’ll get rid of it.” Ran tries. Desperation leaks into her voice, and maybe she is crying but she doesn’t necessarily think tears make her weak, they just make her honest with herself. “I won’t ever let you die.”

Shinichi hesitates. “Your mother is a brilliant lawyer, but she won’t be able to change my verdict. Please Ran.”

“I can’t just give up-”

“Listen Ran,” Shinichi leans forward, and it is almost as if he’s trying to memorise every part of her - the colour of her eyes, the laugh lines that have worn away at her cheeks. “I can’t keep this facade up, I can’t keep sitting down in this room and pretending it’s not going to happen, so please, let me give you this.”

She doesn’t quite feel like he’s giving her anything.

“I don’t want your last memory of me being one that’s painful, okay?” He continues, “so let’s enjoy this visit, and leave it like this. Let’s end it all on a happy note.”

But here is the thing, Ran doesn’t quite feel like this is a happy note.

“Okay.” She says anyway. She wipes away tears, and forces a smile on her face. “Yes, let’s just enjoy ourselves today.”

When the visiting times draw to an end, the clocks ticking and ticking, a feeling similar to doom festers in Ran’s stomach. Shinichi glances up at her and his smile is bittersweet, an expression that reminds her just how much she both hates and loves him.

“I love you,” she says, and means it, even if it is quiet and he doesn’t hear it. She doesn’t repeat herself, not even when he questions it. Instead, she tells him that she’s never going to stop missing him, no matter how much time passes.

“Thank you,” Shinichi says, after a moment, “for giving up on me.”

Ran wants to laugh. She wants to tell him that she is not giving up. Not on him, never on him. Even if she cannot see him, even if he thinks she has, she will never stop trying to prove that he truly is good.

Instead, she nods.

She will let him think what he wants. If it makes things easier on him, then for now she will be the one who has finally given into his request, who has finally decided it is time to take a step and face reality. Ran does not tell him that this is not the way it is supposed to end.

“We’ll meet again,” Ran says, as she stands up. She grants him one last smile, “someday.”

Their fingers touch for a second, and then, there is only empty space between them.

It is not until she is outside that Ran dissolves into tears.

She falls to her knees on the grass and sobs until tears are staining her cheeks and the back of her hands. In the back of her mind she knows that she needs to catch the next shuttle bus down to the train station, but it doesn’t quite register in her mind - it is not urgent.

“Ran-san?”

The voice is male, and she recognises it, how couldn’t she? Turning up to look at him, Ran wipes away her tears and takes the hand that is offered to her.

“Saguru-kun.”

Saguru smiles at her. It’s not mocking, or pitiful, nor is it very happy. It’s the smile of a man who has realised that being weighed down by problems leads to nothing but aching bones and crushed spirits.

“I’m on my way to the train station,” he says, and he points to a car, driver sat in the front. “If you’re headed in the same direction, you’re welcome to join me. You don’t have to wait for the bus.”

Ran opens her mouth, readies herself to refuse. “I coul-”

“Actually,” Saguru interrupts before she can turn him down, “I was hoping that we could go over Kudo-kun’s case. I feel like maybe we’ve overlooked something.”

Does anyone know if there is a temporary car insurance you can get, so you only have to pay for it when you are driving the car. My car insurance is $150/month for plpd(partial), it is the cheapest there is, and my car is only worth around $2000. I only drive my car once a month for a 70 mile round trip. I just think its a lot to be paying $150 for a 70 mile trip. More than $2 a mile just for the insurance seems like quite a bit to me. The build-up to any major tournament is a time of great uncertainty. Who will make the 23-man squad? How will England fare on the big stage? Who will they narrowly go out to on penalties in the quarter finals?

This summer, though, amidst the miasma of unknowns, there were two things so assured we could set our watches by them happening. In the immediate weeks leading up to a World Cup, The Sun would manufacture a scandal involving a member of the England squad. And their fall-guy was always going to be Raheem Sterling.

How did we know this for sure before it even came to pass? Well, the first bit required very little deduction beyond possessing a basic knowledge of the English media because this is what The Sun newspaper does; this is their M.O. Every two years without fail they feed into the excitement and anticipation of the general public and attempt to whip up a storm of indignity. Should one not immediately present itself they are more than happy to reach into the realms of the silly because they know if they shout loud enough about pretty much anything they hold sufficient sway over their readership to trigger a percentage to respond in kind.

For The Sun – and let’s be clear here that other tabloids are guilty of such nefariousness but never is Murdoch’s rag anywhere other than leading from the front – this bi-annual approach is win-win-win. The morally bankrupt institution stations itself erroneously as the nation’s moral arbitrator. They shift units. And they destabilise the national football team thus increasing the chances of failure which in turn leads to a greater capacity for sensationalistic headlines.

So we duly waited for it to come, as sure as night follows day and faux outrage feasts on something good and positive.

But why Sterling? How could we be so certain it would be the Manchester City striker targeted? That was elementary. After all, it was hardly going to be Albion’s great white hope Harry Kane was it? His persona has already been carefully defined as a clean-cut hero complete with childhood sweetheart. Should the Spurs forward stumble – as he did in Euro 2016 – that can be left to the sports guys to deal with. Should he prevail and score lots of goals, that affords the country’s second largest selling newspaper a golden opportunity to wheel out the white van icon Geoff Hurst and have the pair pictured together arm-in-arm in a front page splash for the ages. If the Sun reporter could sneak in a framed photograph of Douglas Bader on the wall behind them then all the better.

What then of Jordan Pickford’s tattoo of a dagger? Presently the disturbing increase in knife crime is a national talking point so perhaps there was a potential – and utterly ludicrous – tie-in there? Perhaps Pickford was a contender? But no: the Everton keeper looks like a lost puppy and he is young, bless him (he is one year older than Sterling). Furthermore, he is white.

It was always going to be Sterling because it always is Sterling.

There he is tired, look, because it’s the middle of the night; and driving an unwashed car because he doesn’t give a s**t; and openly mocking our cheap eating habits by scoffing a sausage roll; and openly mocking our cheap flying habits by using easyJet and then openly mocking our bank balances by taking TWO expensive holidays.

Look there he is, the unscrupulous swine, proposing like a love-rat; and showing off a sink he’s bought his mum that is better than the type us hoi polloi get from Homebase; and going to Primark while on a gazillion a week and getting his batteries from Poundland and just when you think the toe-rag couldn’t disgrace himself more, he then goes off to have some breakfast after missing out on a Young Player of the Year Award! There he is, Sterling the ‘footie idiot’ (The Sun); a ‘symbol of the amorality at the heart of the so-called Beautiful Game’ (Mail Online).

Ever since a 20-year-old Sterling had the temerity to switch from one Premier League club to another in 2015 (one of 27 players who did so that summer alone) an industry of hate has built up around a clearly decent and perfectly normal young man. It has been a relentless, obsessive and downright weird campaign, unprecedented in its voracity and designed to turn Raheem into a national bogeyman (or a ‘symbol of amorality’).

So with a scapegoat needed to undertake their traditional pre-tournament bashing of the national football team, why on earth would The Sun waste all of their hard work castigating someone entirely new? The groundwork had already been done and that’s a huge understatement, while frankly it’s barely an overstatement to claim that so poisonous has been their coverage that on Tuesday they need only have put up a large photograph of the player with his name below it. That alone would have riled up the haters no end. Look at him there, playing football. Like he thinks he’s better than us.

As it was they went with a tattoo featuring an assault rifle on the player’s calf, but let’s move past that for two interconnected reasons. Firstly, the story is ridiculous and manufactured. It’s the faux-outrage that is outrageous, not what a footballer has inked onto his body. Secondly, the non-issue has thankfully been debunked, ridiculed and levelled with reason elsewhere many times over.

Yet there is one aspect to the farrago that has not been mentioned enough in my opinion, and more so it’s an aspect that directly relates to what this article is about – which is not the witch-hunt of a player per se (a subject I have written about several times for this very site) but questioning why The Sun insists on demoralising its national team ahead of every major tournament.

Should you have picked up The Sun newspaper earlier this week and seen their hysterical coverage of the offending tattoo it would be understandable if you assumed the ink was barely dry. Perhaps Sterling had intended to premiere it at the World Cup? If it was a magic tattoo that is with the ability to radiate through his sock.

In fact a reliable report has suggested that it was done way back in late October and even if that’s not the case it was certainly done prior to City winning the league as photographs of Raheem celebrating clearly show the tattoo in evidence.

So The Sun sat on this. They waited and given they have previously screamed blue murder over the player in question eating cereal or walking alongside a female mate in Jamaica, it can be surmised that it was not a story relegated to their in-tray without good reason.

They waited for the season to finish. They waited for the excitement and anticipation of England’s participation in Russia 2018 to build up some steam. They waited for the most damaging time to mentally disrupt a key figure for Gareth Southgate’s team, a player who scored 23 times last season and was otherwise flying.

This therefore was not just an attack on Raheem Sterling. This was an attack on our national side.

Which, as previously stated, is The Sun’s M.O.

That’s how Gary Lineker this week described the newspaper’s fetish of undermining our hopes and the only criticism I have towards his response lies in the use of ‘unpatriotic’.

It should have been written out in capital letters.

So why do they do it, this comic that hilariously professes to have the country’s best interests at heart? Pure and simple it comes down to numbers and opportunity, because prior to any major sporting event a vacuum needs to be filled, a disparity that has a lot of interest from the general public but not a great deal to write about. So that’s all it is really. A business decision. A chance to shift a few extra papers even if it means shafting something that its readers hold dear.

It of course doesn’t end there, though. That’s just the start of it. This summer – just like 2016 and 2014 and 2012 and 2010 and back through time – The Sun, having given ‘our boys’ an entirely unnecessary kicking to weaken their resolve will then enact a staggering volte-face come the tournament’s kick-off.

Indeed by the middle of June this joke of a publication will turn full John Bull, plastering tub-thumping jingoism onto its front page while alluding that 11 footballers are going into battle, held strong by the ghostly spirit of the Somme. We few, we happy few. We band of brothers.

Personally I find this stage to be the most unnerving. It’s like a psychopath enquiring about the health of old Mrs Higgins down the road while cradling a puppy. It gives me the creeps if truth be told.

Then, when England exit having been defeated by a very good international rival another volte-face; another dramatic shift. They are a disgrace who should not be allowed back into the country. The manager is a vegetable. The venom returns. The fangs. The spite.

This familiar, well-worn pattern reveals highly schizophrenic tendencies but an individual can be schizophrenic not a major news organisation staffed by hundreds. So we have to ask ourselves – which is their natural state of being? Which is the real Sun and which extreme is fake?

Surely deep down even the Manchurian Candidates who swallow the newspaper’s lies and bile wholesale must know the answer to that one. Hate leaves ugly scars that are visible to even the blind.

Don’t buy the Sun. In football, as in life, they set out only to do England down for their own advancement. They are the enemy within.

They are a tattoo that we wish was temporary but which stains our very soul.
