Chances

~5k words
From Me: It's been about 2 minutes since my last love at first sight story so I figured that was long enough for another one. Just a silly little thing.
Warnings: A tiny bit of smut. Also she's shorter than Harry (only relevant for 20 seconds, max). Other than that, should be fluff fluff fluff.
Summary: Airports are gross, overpriced, and extremely anxiety-inducing. She hates being there.
But it's also where she sits with a really cute guy who makes her feel like she's flying from the moment she looks at him and before takeoff even begins.
Tumblr media
What was it about airports that were so romantic? Everyone knew how gross they were. A petri dish of diseases on every surface. Overpriced food and drinks. Not to mention the exorbitant price of books and magazines. Almost everyone passing through was stressed with worry about missing their flight, losing their bag, losing their kid, or personal items. She was one of them. Even with an hour and half cushion she was worried it would take off or something while she was going to get a coffee.
Which was perhaps why she didn’t notice where she chose to sit at her gate. All that anxiety festering and building in her that only the relief of flopping into one of the seats near an outlet would release. She put her coffee in the little cup holder, tucked her bag beneath her feet and placed the overpriced book on her lap.
Someone called out for another person making her head tip up at the noise.
It was fate. Destiny. Whatever corny thing a romance writer would say it was. But there were only so many places her eyes could fall, and they happened to land on him.
What was it about making eye contact with a guy her age at the airport that made her feel like she was in a Hallmark movie? He gave her a polite smile. One that was downright pretty. Too pretty to be on a man's lips and one that made her heart skip a beat.
Hence why she was thinking about the romanticism of the airport in the first place.
She sincerely hoped she returned his kind smile because at the very least she didn’t want to be rude. But it was all a matter of seconds; this little romance novel scene she was playing out. Her cheeks felt warm with a rush of blood to her skin before she dropped her gaze back to her book. She had to. If she didn’t, she was going to do something crazy like profess how taken she was with him after meeting those stunning green eyes for half a second like the love at first sight she saw in movies.
But was that his gaze she felt heating up her skin? She refused to look up, but the words of her novel blurred together, and she could only think about how blue was one of her favorite colors growing up but green might have kicked that right out of the top spot in that moment.
*
Their flight was delayed which stressed her out beyond comprehension. It wasn’t even that long but if she didn’t have somewhere to be when she landed, she would have felt a lot better. She swore she was the last person to board the plane, and it only fueled her anxiety further.
But if it weren’t for the delay, her being last, or the fact that she was going to miss the rehearsal dinner for her friend’s wedding, the anxiety of seeing the hot guy from the gate was sitting next to her empty seat was surely going to give her a heart attack at the ripe age of her late twenties.
She felt her cheeks burning in recognition as he smiled again at her. “Hi.”
“Hi.”
That pretty face that was going to haunt her dreams for a lifetime. “Are you 12A?” He asked. The window seat, fortunately. His voice was warm and gentle.
“Yeah, sorry,” she bit her lip.
He chuckled standing in the aisle to get out of her way so she could get settled. “S’nothing t’apologize for.”
“I’m sure you thought you were going to have the row to yourself,” she sighed and placed her oversized purse on her seat so she could stow her carryon above her head.
“Allow me,” he offered and hoisted the bag to the storage space as if she hadn’t crammed a week’s worth of clothes and shoes inside it for only a long weekend. “S’okay. S’not a big plane. They said it was full.”
Stupid airports and their romantic goggles.
“Thank you,” she said gratefully and slipped into their row.
She noted all of his items were ready: a book tucked into the seat back compartment, a bottle of water stowed there as well, and his phone and headphones that he pulled from his pocket and placed on the tray once he was seated again. She fiddled with her bag, pulling out the items she wanted tucked into the spaces she had easy access to as well. Most importantly, she grabbed the travel package of disinfectant wipes to clean off her little home away from home for the next few hours.
“Oh, that’s a smart idea,” he smirked admiring her tidiness.
“I think Covid taught me that airplanes are one of the most disgusting places on the planet.”
He chuckled. “I suppose s’fair,” he nodded in agreement. “D’you have an extra one?” He asked. She nodded and held the little package out to her row-mate. He took two and repeated her routine to clean. The air vent, the tray table, the belt buckle and arm rest. He used the second to wipe down his headphones, phone, and book with a quick swipe. She held out a little sandwich bag she used for trash while on the plane. “Y’must fly a lot,” he smirked at her preparedness.
“Used to,” she took a deep breath. “I still get kind of nervous.”
“Honestly, would think y’were not human if y’didn’t get nervous.”
The announcements were being made and she focused on the flight attendants and their safety demonstration. Well, tried to. The man beside her was so handsome it was like he demanded to be stared at; it was hard not to comply to such a silent request. He looked effortlessly comfortable and so attractive it was unfair. But maybe it was those stupid airport goggles making her fall in love with someone relatively close to her age and perhaps he was only a little hot.
But as he reached for the air vent again, his sweatshirt sleeve slid down his wrist so that her eyes darted to his forearm and landed on the tattoo on the inside of his arm. It wasn’t even something she would qualify as a sexy tattoo, but it was there. As it appeared in her vision, all her dignity, self-respect, and thought of him being only a little hot, flew right out the window.
Stupid men.
The plane jolted a little as it started its take-off, making her gasp and she gripped the armrest tight. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath as it settled into its rhythm. The final announcement that the ascent was going to begin came through the speaker and the plane got quiet as it always did at that time. “Hey, love?”
It was pathetic she recognized his voice already. Pathetic that she was going to respond to the little pet name. They had barely spoken. But the two little words were soft and sexy. In a gentle kind of way. She peeked out of one eye to glance at him. She swallowed thickly around the nerves. “Uh... yeah?”
“I can hold your hand, if y’want. S’just a tight grip y’got on m’arm,” it was so gentle. He didn’t even sound annoyed or pained. She gasped again, released his arm from her goddamn death grip, and covered her mouth. How fucking embarrassing. She didn’t even notice.
“I’m so sorry,” she whispered.
“No, s’fine,” he assured her, his smile was so kind. Like she was a wounded bird that he found after it flew into the window. “Here,” he offered pulling her hand from her mouth and laced their fingers together. “M’not a fan of takeoff either,” he explained giving her hand a gentle squeeze.
Did he feel how perfectly their hands fit together? Or did she imagine it? These airplane goggles were thick as hell. She was fucked when she got off the plane and never saw him again. They were silent during the remainder of the ascent and once the bell signaled that they could unbuckle, the pilot announced they were at cruising altitude, Harry gave her hand a squeeze again before releasing it.
“Thank you,” the sincerity in his voice made her blush and she was glad it was dark on the plane and the flight would remain dark. Because if she had to see how pretty his face was for the whole flight, she wasn’t going to make it. It was unfair that someone so handsome was seated next to her and she would never see him again. Someone who was thanking her for holding her hand. After she tried to rip his arm hair out.
Did his hand feel cold? Her hand felt cold. It was so ridiculous she just wanted to scream.
She had the worst luck.
*
Harry had the best luck. The pretty girl from the gate was in the same row as him. He got to hold her hand. The flight was only five or so hours long and the thought of it being delayed was miserable. But there she was looking so unbelievably beautiful.
There’s a REALLY pretty girl at my gate. He texted Mitch the second he saw her.
You better not be creepy. Sarah says there’s NOTHING worse than a guy being creepy at the airport.
I’m not going to make my soulmate uncomfortable. I’m just going to ask her every question that pops into my head to get to know her, and then ask how many kids she wants to have with me.
...Best of luck to her.
I’m probably not even going to talk to her :( She looks busy and what are the chances she’ll be sitting next to me? There’s no way I have that kind of luck.
But Harry did have that luck it seemed. The pretty girl was tucked into their row against the window, her head resting against the side of the plane. She was clean, organized, and adorable. He liked how she spoke to the flight attendant. Like she was a hinderance by being a passenger. It was sweet and he admired her kindness and thoughtfulness. She was so grateful when Harry handed her the little bag of pretzels and the drink she got.
“Reading something good?” She asked quietly.
Harry smiled and held it out to her so she could read the back cover. “Something m’sister recommended.”
She intently read the words on the back and nodded. “I think I’m going to add it to my never-ending list.”
God, he wanted to say he could give it to her when he was finished. But he was never going to see her again. So maybe he didn’t have the luck he hoped he did. “How ‘bout you?”
“Um...” she smiled. “It’s nothing... intelligent. It’s a brain-rotting romance thing. I don’t know, I like to read trashy stuff on the plane. Take my mind off it and everything else.”
“I see,” he didn’t ask Gemma a lot of questions, but he knew that meant it was filled with spicy romantic scenes that he could only dream about with someone as pretty as her. But that would be what Sarah called creepy, so he pushed that thought away quickly. “M’not a huge e-book person.”
“They’re good for travel,” she smiled. “I love bookstores, and I think I could build a whole house out of the books I have or want to buy. But traveling... it’s nice to have something compact. But I bought a book at the convenience store before we left. Which is so dumb because the mark up is like an extra ten dollars and I could have gotten it for free on this thing but the Wi-Fi is a bit of a problem sometimes, like I can’t get my new book to—” She paused as Harry listened intently. It was so disarming listening to her talk about books and her e-reader. It was adorable. Her eyes, even in the faint glow from the emergency airplane lights, were lit with excitement. “I’m rambling, I’m sorry.”
“No!” He frowned, shaking his head hurriedly. He immediately missed the excitement in her eyes. “Y’weren’t. I never thought ‘bout how the traveling is easier with it. I had t’forgo a whole outfit t’get m’books in m’bag.”
She smiled and sipped her drink. “I always do that. Except I’m sure you felt how heavy my bag was, I didn’t do it this time. I told myself I wasn’t going to overpack and I just couldn’t do it.”
“M’sister has a hard time with it too.”
“It’s impossible, I think. Especially for an event, you know?”
Was Harry still smiling? He couldn’t stop smiling. She just had this air about her. The air between them was vibrating and it wasn’t because of turbulence. She had to feel it, right? Harry couldn’t be imagining this electric feeling that was pulsing between them. They were just sitting there, staring at each other.
“Can I say something crazy?” He asked.
“Crazy? Are you planning on murdering me?”
“No,” he chuckled. “I jus’...” he paused and scanned her face memorizing the moment wondering how on earth he could meet her again. Maybe he’d be lucky enough to have a plane ride back with her. But there couldn’t be that much good luck. “This is a bit...” he trailed off and he chuckled. His face was only inches from hers. She bit her lip.
“Yeah... it is.”
“S’crazy, right?”
She nodded. “It is,” she whispered back.
“Hi,” he said quietly, a smile growing on his face.
“Hi,” she giggled.
*
When the plane began its descent, he held her hand again and gave it a gentle squeeze. It made her stomach flutter. As they left their little row, her heart hammered in her chest. How unfair it was that she would never see him again. He grabbed her bag from the compartment above and he walked with her all the way to baggage claim. They chatted a little more. Smiling and giggling. She didn’t even realize he was still holding her hand.
At least the airport goggles were working both ways it seemed.
“You let me go on and on about overpacking and you checked a bag?” He smirked, grabbed her hand again and led her toward the rideshare pickup spot. “Can I say something crazy?”
“Are y’planning on murdering me?” He asked.
“You felt it right?”
“Felt what?” The smile melted off her face and she dropped his hand like it burned her. “Whoa, hey,” he laughed and snagged it quick into his again. “S’bad joke,” he brought her hand to his lips and kissed her knuckles softly. “Course I felt it.”
She looked at her feet. The seconds felt like hours as she looked for something to say. “I don’t know where to go from here,” she frowned looking back at him.
“Yeah...” He sighed. “It’s...” he sighed. There was so much he wanted to say. So much she wanted to tell him. They needed more time, more space.
She wanted to live on that plane.
Harry wanted to stay at that airport.
She pushed up onto her toes and kissed him. It was crazy. Outlandish. Ridiculous. She cupped his cheek, her thumb brushing his skin. He smiled on her mouth making her want to melt. His hand found her lower back, pulled her closer because in just sneakers she couldn’t reach his lips completely. With her firmly in his embrace, he nipped at her lower lip. It was so sinful she shivered.
The honking interrupted their moment, pulling each other apart. “I have to go,” she whispered looking at the Uber that matched the license plate listed on her phone.
“I know.”
“Hi,” she whispered with a quiet laugh.
“Hi.”
“It was... really nice meeting you,” her smile was so goddamn pretty it was going to make Harry cry.
“It was nice meeting you, love,” he answered. Safely tucked her into the back of the cab. She unrolled the window.
“I don’t even know your name.”
“Harry,” he said.
“Harry,” she repeated. “Nice meeting you, Harry.”
*
“You have outdone yourself,” she smiled as she turned. The woman before her had a stunning smile, her hair half pinned, her white silk pajamas shimmering in the light. “They’re stunning.”
“You’re one to talk, I’d give you a hug but I don’t want to mess anything up,” she wrinkled her nose. “You love them?” She asked.
“I love them. They might upstage me.”
“I sincerely doubt it. You look stunning already.”
“Do you hate me for not making you a bridesmaid?”
“God, no,” she shook her head. “I’m more of a behind the scenes kind of person anyway. If you need anything today, I’m your girl,” she promised. “I was too far away,” she shrugged.
“Don’t remind me,” she frowned. “These flowers are the things of dreams. You are the best,” she sighed dreamily. “Can I see my bouquet?” Her frown quickly turned into a smile again. “I’ve been dreaming about it.”
She went to the bucket that was at the edge of what would be the ceremony floor and pulled the bouquet from it. She felt so proud and happy with the arrangement she made for one of her long-time best friends. “Seph,” she smiled. “You look beautiful,” she reminded her.
Persephone grinned admiring the bouquet. “You’re incredible... How was your flight? Other than delayed?”
“It was...” she tried to think about anything but the color green. “Good.”
“Oh?” Seph’s perfectly plucked eyebrow arched suspiciously “How good? Did you join the mile high club?”
“Oh my God, Persephone, of course not.”
“Well, you don’t say good like that if he’s not cute.”
A slight pause as she looked at the ceiling and then back at her friend. “He was really cute.”
“You’re a walking Hallmark movie.”
“That’s literally how I felt.” They giggled then she sighed thinking about the kiss she shared with a stranger. It was so unlike her to get all in a twist about a guy she just met. This wasn’t normal. It was like she was still in the airport. There were so many things they didn’t talk about. So many things she didn’t know about him and never would. It was unfair and yet she couldn’t stop herself from feeling like she was still flying. Shaking her head, she turned to her friend once more. “Alright, I have to finish these flower arrangements. Not sure if you know this, but there’s a wedding happening here tonight.”
“Sorry about your airplane man, babe,” Seph squeezed her shoulder.
“Hey, no frowns. It’s your wedding day,” she turned back to the table she was working on before her friend’s interruption. “I think some moments are meant to just... exist in that moment.”
*
Harry had thought about only three things that day. Breathing, cake, and of course the beautiful girl he met on the plane.
You KISSED her?! Sarah asked.
I know... I’ve never met anyone like her.
That’s a real bummer, Harry, honestly. It was and Sarah was right. At first, he was joking, but now he was certain she was his soulmate, and he just let her go. But what choice did he have? Yes, there was the feeling of his heart beating faster. The excitement of making her laugh. But there was the calmness, the tranquility of being beside her. Holding her hand.
Maybe it was morbid, but Harry was certain he was looking for someone to hold his hand if the plane were to go down and maybe that’s what a soulmate really was.
It was easy. Easy to talk to her, make her laugh. It was easy to get to know her and he didn’t even know anything about her. He didn’t know where she was from, what she did, where she was going, but he just knew that she was his and he let her go. There were too many variables. Too many things he couldn’t control.
“Harry, you almost done?”
“Jus’ putting the finishing touches,” he mumbled.
“We’re going to be late!”
“They won’t start without us,” he rolled his eyes.
“If there is a speck of—”
“I’m clean, I’m clean,” he shook his head, coming to the other room and brushing his hands along his coat. “Let’s get married, yeah?”
*
The maid of honor talked about how lucky the pair of them were to find one another. How there were an infinite number of opportunities for them to not have met but there was this special moment destined for each other. Where Persephone would walk into the library to sit in her favorite study spot and if she wasn’t so superstitious she would have just found another table.
But instead, she walked right up to the table, told her future husband he was in her spot, and she was preparing for an exam, and she wouldn’t let him use her favorite seat.
The best man spoke about how he was actually destined to be with the groom for forever and ever which made the entire place laugh.
But talk of luck and destiny just made her feel miserable on the inside. If she asked for his number or where he lived, it would be hours from where she lived. She would be devastated. A kiss was a good ending to her little story. That would suffice.
Maybe he already had a girlfriend. That would work too. Something to make her feel like a horrible person and lessen the blow that her soulmate was somewhere out there never to be seen again. Harry was just a guy that held her hand on a plane and talked about books with her for hours so she wouldn’t be scared. Someone that split his snacks with her even though she didn’t know him.
No. She couldn’t think about him. She had to stop thinking about him. It wasn’t good for her brain or her heart.
It was a beautiful ceremony. That’s what she needed to focus on. Persephone was a gorgeous bride and the event was just... perfect. “I think I’ve given your name and number to just about every single woman here,” Seph said sliding into a seat beside her and kissed her cheek.
She laughed. “Well thank you,” she smiled. “Let me see,” she held her hand out for the one with her new jewelry and she admired the pretty diamond that glimmered alongside the new band of diamonds below it. “Everything is beautiful.”
“This place is beautiful because of you. Just like you said.”
“Oh... it was beautiful before. I just added to it.”
“I didn’t see it though. It’s a bargain if you can envision it like this. I seriously wouldn’t have picked it without you saying you’d do the flowers,” Seph explained. “You saw so much more than I did.”
She shrugged. “I don’t think there’s a place on earth that doesn’t benefit from flowers.”
“Well, thank you,” she squeezed her hand. “I wouldn’t be having a wonderful day without you. I know it was a lot to travel out here and—”
“No, no. Don’t even. I wouldn’t have missed this for the world. Flowers or no flowers.”
Persephone grinned. “Well... in other news... do you see anyone as cute as your airplane man? Lerone has a lot of single friends.”
She smirked and shook her head. “No offense, Seph, but there is no one that’s going to be as cute as my airplane guy.”
“No one?”
Her head snapped up to the voice that she had already planned on dreaming about for the rest of her life. Her eyes met the same green gaze she had the pleasure of looking at for five hours while chatting about books and whispering about nothing of importance (but it all seemed important at the time). There was no way. She didn’t have this kind of luck. If there was a squeaky carriage at the grocery store she was sure to pick it. There was no way that—
“Hi Harry!” Persephone smiled. “Do you two know each other?”
“Something like that,” Harry stuffed his hands in his pockets. “Hi,” Harry grinned at her.
She cleared her throat, adrenaline flowing through her body. “Hi,” she whispered breathlessly.
“Harry baked our cake. He went to school with Lerone.”
“Oh,” she swallowed.
“And I heard y’did all the work with these pretty flowers,” Harry smiled.
“She’s like the flower queen,” Persephone giggled.
“I see.”
There was a pause while they stared at each other. Harry grinning like a madman, he was sure. But she was stunning. A floral dress draped her body, her hair half pinned up. She was so pretty. Somehow even prettier than the way she looked on the airplane and Harry was certain she could never be prettier than the moment she sat next to him.
“Hi,” she laughed.
“Hi,” he chuckled.
“Of all the gin joints.”
Harry took a seat beside her. Persephone had moved onto the next table and yet, she hadn’t even noticed. “I haven’t stopped thinking ‘bout you, love,” he grabbed her hand. “Been thinking ‘bout the plane, y’e-reader, and that earth-shattering kiss.”
Her cheeks heated up and Harry reached out to brush his thumb on her cheek. “This is insane,” she whispered.
“I know,” he agreed.
“I don’t have luck like this,” she explained. “I’m the kind of person that has their luggage get lost. Or my coat will snag on the doorknob. If I didn’t want to be paired with someone in a group project in high school, I could guarantee I was going to be in their group.”
“Y’think it’s lucky you’re meeting me?” He practically wiggled his eyebrows. Trying to sound egotistical but all it did was make her fall harder for him.
Her heart skipped a beat. “Well...yeah,” she swallowed. “I mean... what else am I supposed to call it?”
“It doesn’t have t’be luck. Can jus’ be meeting you.”
“I don’t think it works that way for me.”
“Can I dance with you?” He asked.
“I’m not very good and I think there’s a good chance I’ll step on your toes and—”
Harry was already helping her stand and tugging her to the dance floor. She did step on his toes, not hard, but her quiet “sorry” was lost on Harry. It felt perfect to hold her in his arms. One hand in his, her other at the back of his neck, his free hand on the small of her back. They fit like puzzle pieces. “A florist, hmm?” He hummed right by her ear.
“A baker?” She replied.
He chuckled. “What are the chances?”
*
“D’you have any idea how good y’look?” He groaned. She was in just a T-shirt. Harry’s T-shirt. He propped his head in his hand as he looked at her laying in his bed. His finger skimming just below the hem of the shirt. It barely touched her thighs and the only thing that stood in his way was a scrap of fabric she called underwear.
She giggled. “Back at you.”
“This is insane,” he smiled and pressed his lips to hers.
“It is,” she whispered.
If all her bad luck had been to make this weekend happen, she was forever grateful. This was worth it. Harry was worth it. “When’s your flight?”
“Quarter of five. When’s yours?”
“The same, of course.”
She smiled and tucked her face into his chest. “How far away are you from my shop?”
“Only ‘bout a half hour drive,” he told her. “Why?”
“Just... wondering.”
“Jus’ want t’know how much time and distance is between you and a toe-curling orgasm?”
“Don’t be crass.”
“I wasn’t talking ‘bout you,” he peppered a line of kisses down the side of her face and along her neck, down the curve of her shoulder, even when the T-shirt got in the way. “You are so pretty,” he mumbled pulling at his shirt to touch her soft skin and curves. “I don’t think I’ve ever met someone so pretty.”
“I’m sure that’s not true.”
“No, I’d remember you,” he smiled pressing his lips to her collarbone. He pulled the shirt off her and he brushed his thumbs across her nipples softly. Making them perk up more than they already were with the cold air from the room and no barrier between her. “Definitely remember this,” he mumbled into her skin.
“I have to pack,” she whispered but her voice was air and her resolve wasn’t there.
“Put it in m’checked bag,” his lips were occupied by one of her nipples making it extremely difficult for her to concentrate. “Jus’ shove everything in there. Then s’a promise I’ll see y’after we land.”
Her heart fluttered. “You want to see me again?”
He popped his head up from licking at her like she was candy. The air was even chillier against the sensitive skin without Harry’s warm mouth wrapped around her. “M’sorry, was I not clear?”
She smirked. “I don’t know. I’ve been thinking about airport goggles.”
“Airport goggles?” He repeated.
“I have really bad luck, Harry. I just worry that the idea of me in an airport because I’m roughly your age... or like, you know airplane food is a real thing? Not just a joke? Something about the altitude messing with your tastebuds or something. So maybe this is all an illusion, is what I’m saying. Maybe I am really unlucky because when we get back to our real life we won’t have airport goggles and—”
“Kitten,” he chuckled and rubbed his thumb across her lip. “Shh,” he whispered and pressed a soft kiss on her mouth.
“I’m just saying—”
“I know,” he rolled his eyes. “I hear you. But m’telling you, there’s no such thing as airport goggles. Even if there are, m’never taking them off.”

"Hey man, next time you race try not to kill the other drivers," (Y/N) (L/N) sunk down into the P3 chair next to Sainz, who had just won the race. He glanced over at her with a scowl, clearly wanting to say some nasty things if it wasn't for the million cameras in the cooldown room. She shifted in her seat, stretching her arms as she watched the race's highlights on the screen besides her. Carlos and her both had a spectacular race, considering they had started from the bottom of the grid more or less. She knew she had the skills to get to the podium, but she was surprised at the fact that Carlos had managed to somehow win the race from nowhere. It didn't seem like his normal self and she wondered what could've motivated him to actually drive good for once.
"Next time you race, try not to be cocky and drag other drivers down," Carlos grumbled, his voice was muffled due to the rag that was currently soaking up all of the sweat on his face. She glared at him, holding an accusatory finger to the air before Max had settled down in the P2 chair. He shook Carlos's hand, before waving at (L/N). The room was silent, spare Max rambling on about what he saw during the race. As Max continued to talk, (L/N)'s eyes flickered occasionally onto Carlos, wondering what was going through his mind. She was definitely in the wrong, but her ego wouldn't handle that and she needed to tear him a new one once they were done with all the celebrations. She always hated this circuit anyway.
"She's not supposed to be here, mate," Charles giggled, jerking his thumb towards the woman that was angrily storming into Ferrari's garage. Carlos looked up from where he sat with a groan escaping his lips.
"She isn't," Carlos stood up, taking the cap off his head to run a hand through his hair, "I suppose you've come to apologize for your behavior this weekend? Or last weekend? Or the many weekends before that?" "Apologize?" (L/N) snorted, rolling her eyes, "I've come to ask about what you said at the press pen!"
Charles, sensing the tension between the two, gently ushered the two into Carlos's driver's room before shutting the door. The last thing Ferrari needed after this lovely weekend was to deal with the drivers having to go through PR training once again, especially with the amount of times Carlos had been talking shit about (Y/N) (L/N). Carlos had stood by the door, arms crossed as he gestured with his hands for her to begin whatever stupid argument she had managed to pull out of her ass this time.
"You remember what you said?" She growled, and when she saw him shake his head, her nostrils flared, "You literally told the press, 'sometimes, I like to put people in the places they belong and that's precisely what I did with (L/N)', are you kidding me?"
"You should be happy," Carlos scoffed, "I could've said way worse. Besides, I was giving you a taste of your own medicine. You said after qualifying yesterday that even with a million practices, I'd still fumble."
"Yeah, because you do! You're inconsistent as hell and that's why-"
"And yet who won the race today starting behind you." Carlos interrupted her. She closed her mouth, chest heaving. Carlos could see the gears turn in her head, she was trying so hard to come up with something. He had a smug smile on his face and somehow this was more victorious than winning the Grand Prix.
"It doesn't matter if you win today or not, you won't be driving for Ferrari soon, anyway," She spat. She smirked at the way his face fell, her arms crossed with her head tilted upwards. That cocky look on her face that always drove him wild.
"You're such an asshole," Carlos seethed, and before she could respond with a snarky remark, his lips crashed onto her. His hands came to hold onto the sides of her face, pulling her as close to him as he could. He pulled away for a brief second to take a quick breath and noticed the way her eyes widened, "Did you just kiss me? Listen here buddy, I'll have you know that-" Her words died down when she noticed Carlos's eyes flicker to her lips. God, her absolute hatred for him made her forget how charming he truly was. She wouldn't admit to it, though. Not now nor ever. Right now, all they needed was to blow off this steam. She grabbed onto his neck, pulling him down to another searing kiss, eyes closed as their teeth crashed into one another. She tugged his hair and he squeezed her waist, both of them realizing that feelings may not exist at the moment, it was all about just shutting each other up.
"I hate you," She murmured before going in for another kiss.
"I hate you more," His lips attached to her neck, leaving open-mouthed kisses that were sure to bruise her.
"Well, I hate you the most, stop trying to be better than me." She snapped in a strained voice and he groaned out loud, pulling back to stare at her,
"How much money do I have to pay for you to shut up?"
𝘾𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙡𝙚𝙨 𝙇𝙚𝙘𝙡𝙚𝙧𝙘
Charles didn't win the next race, unfortunately. He was a bit happy that he didn't DNF, but the fact that the winner of the race was none other than his sworn enemy did little to comfort him. He glanced over to Max who was at P2, and looked around to the room to make sure that rat wasn't lurking nearby.
"W-What was the gap between you and her?" Charles asked. He knew asking would literally do him 0 help, but he couldn't stop himself from wanting to know.
"I want to say around a good 20 seconds or so? Maybe a bit more, I wasn't too sure," Max responded, watching Charles sink deeper in his seat with a look of despair. He gulped, staring aimlessly onto the wall in front of him. How was she that fast? What had she done with the car overnight?
"I'm sorry for (Y/N) for the next few races," He heard her, loud and clear, as she entered the cooldown room, mocking him for what he said last weekend. Charles instantly glared at her, not even bothering to hide his true intentions. No amount of PR training could hide his disgust for her. She settled into her seat, relishing in the feeling of being the race winner.
"You do anything with your car?" Charles grunted, and she shook her head,
"No, no. I just have more skill," She flashed him a smile, before getting up once again to grab a bottle of water. Max, for once in his life, decided to be quiet in the room and see the argument follow through. He'd heard Charles tell him multiple times about how (L/N) got on his nerves, but seeing it in person would be amazing.
"I doubt that. You used to place below me during the races," Charles took a sip of his water.
"What are you insinuating then?" She snarled, and Max glanced over to the camera crew, signaling for them to leave. While this would do numbers for the ratings and news headlines, they were promised some share of money if they got their asses out.
"Um guys, I don't think we should be fighting, we have to cooldown anyway..." Max began, but his words fell onto deaf ears as Charles stood up from his seat to stalk over to where she stood.
"Maybe you'd be more likeable if you were honest with yourself, sometimes cheaters-" Charles began, standing his ground when she yelled back,
"So you think I cheated in this race? Seriously? That's your argument?"
"Well, we do know that last weekend there was water in your tires," Charles snapped,
"That wasn't my fault? Stop being such a sore loser, Leclerc. Maybe this is why you haven't won a championship yet."
Max's jaw dropped as he watched the words fly out of her mouth. Charles, in the meantime, tossed his water bottle to the ground and stepped closer to her with his finger in her face,
"At least I raced clean without losing grip when I tried to overtake someone. You just got lucky today, that's it."
"Luck, really? Yeah, tell me about your luck when you're fighting more with your teammate than with the other drivers on the grid during the race." She hissed.
Was it the air? Was it the fact that the adrenaline was still high after the race, or was it the fact that despite not being able to stand each other they were only centimeters apart. It didn't take long before Charles's hand dug into her scalp, pulling her head back ever so slightly as he kissed her. Seeing this as another challenge, (L/N) brought Charles down to the ground, both of them fighting to be on top while still furiously kissing each other. His hands gripped her waist and she had her arms around his neck, dragging him towards her as they rolled off of each other on the ground, tongues practically in each other's mouths with the intention of wanting to ruin each other. She scratched him, he yanked her hair, she punched his chest and he twisted her arm and yet their lips never stopped wanting to consume the other. It wasn't until (L/N) pulled away to breathe again did they both realize that Max was still there with a very shocked expression.
"I'm... I'm just going to leave and make sure uh no one else enters this room but uh guys you might want to... put yourself together before we get on the podium," Max had one hand covering his eyes as he walked out of the room.
"Do you think he's gonna tell people we just made out?" She asked, propping herself onto her elbows.
"I doubt it," Charles responded with a roll of his eyes, "I mean, who would go and loudly state that Charles Leclerc was kissing you of all people? I wouldn't wish that upon my worst enemy."
He winced when her hand smacked the back of his head.
𝙈𝙖𝙭 𝙑𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙚𝙣
Max never forgot. He never forgot anything. He had made a promise to himself that he would wipe that smirk off her face and he intended to keep it. Even with all the setbacks that he was facing this particular weekend. Back to back penalties, a grip drop and on top of all this, a very haughty (Y/N) (L/N) purposely bumping into him on the paddock with a bright smile,
"Have fun! I've always wondered how the view from the back would look like for you," She chirped, speeding past him on a scooter. Max's jaw went taut, and he did little to hide his anger for the rest of the day. He was going to make sure that the race tomorrow would haunt her for the rest of her life. She had chosen the wrong person to mess with and he was determined to prove it to her.
Max was on a different level during the race, he was unbelievably fast and it surprised everyone but mainly (Y/N) (L/N).
Her radio went off, and someone buzzed through, "Max is currently at P6, he's coming up behind you."
"What the hell?" Her voice was a bit quiet, still in disbelief at the fact that Max was now right behind her, "How does he do this?"
And before she can react further, she sees him overtake her as he flashed his middle finger at her before speeding off. That got her going, and despite the radio telling her to calm down and control her motions, she began to chase after Max. Her ego was bruised but surely she could redeem herself. Unfortunately, she lost grip and her car went spiraling out of control towards the barriers.
"A safety car will be deployed soon, Max," GP informed the driver.
"Who crashed?"
"(Y/N) (L/N)."
Max couldn't help the giggle that escaped his lips, and to quote Alonso he merely stated, "Karma..." before turning his radio off for the rest of the race.
By the time all the celebrations were done, Max walked past (L/N)'s garage and he noticed the way she was pouting, legs crossed as she was busy texting somebody. Her fingers flew across the screen, and it almost looked like she was about to cry. Max did feel a bit bad for her, he knew she had worked to get to where she was - she was after all the only female driver on the grid so she was talented. He walked over to her in the best hopes that he could try to make her feel better, I mean he wasn't a monster.
"Oh, look who's here, the ugly ass sloth who can't mind his own business," She sneered, crossing her arms as she looked up at him. Yeah, that was it. Max didn't want to comfort her anymore, he was going to stoop down to her level.
"You know, maybe if you learned to shut your mouth and admit your mistakes, you could've actually done well in the race today." He scoffed, towering over her. She stood up, going back to texting her friend with a scowl on her face.
"Texting your mechanics to help salvage what's left of the car?" Max snorted.
"No, I'm texting my friend about how some douchebag keeps talking to me like I even asked for him. Like why the hell are you even here? Go back to your own garage, asshole." She snapped, pocketing her phone. Max threw his backpack onto the ground besides her and took a step forward,
"You know I was going to be nice to you-"
"You said Karma over the radio, I heard that shit clearly," She hissed, stepping closer as well.
"I said it in the moment, but right now I was going to be nice. I was going to comfort you. You are talented, you're not a shit driver like I said you were, but God... your ego. Your stubbornness. Your... your absolute pathetic move to shift the blame onto someone else for your wrong doings. Get over yourself, you don't know shit about your own car and yet you always blame me for something during the race!"
"My car is completely fine before you wrecked it!"
"Oh, so that DNF last weekend was my fault? You rammed into me! Let's not forget that!" Max yelled, glancing over to the new shiny car that would be in use next weekend.
"Oi, eyes on me," She snapped her fingers in his face, grabbing his jaw to turn it to her, "Don't stare at my winning car."
Max yanked her hand from his jaw, glaring at her. Oh, he hated her. He hated her so much. Even when he wanted to be nice to her, she always found a way to ruin it. How was it possible for a woman as beautiful and genuinely talented as her to somehow always end up as the most annoying, stuck-up little piece of shit that he had ever seen? Within seconds, he had her against her "amazing" car with his lips onto her. She gasped in surprise, eyes darting to the corner of the garage to make sure all the mechanics had left, but considering the way Max was making her melt in his kiss, her worries soon faded away. Max had one hand pressing her down against the car, her back hit the edge of the halo and she groaned in pain, causing her to arch into him as he deepened the kiss. Her hands came to grip onto his shoulders as she bit down on his bottom lip, and she could feel him smiling against her.
"I wish you were like this every weekend," He whispered, delving into another kiss. She wrapped her hand in his hair, tugging him gently away from her,
"I hope you realize this is a one time occurrence. I have standards," She smirked.
"They must be pretty low then like your racing skills," Max snapped, kissing her once more as he felt her smirk fade against his lips. He really did mean it when he said he was going to wipe it off her face, he just never imagined it to be in this way.
"Shut up," She mumbled, "Just shut up."

y/n leaned over the counter, watching as Max stirs the pasta sauce on the stove, the delicious aroma filling the kitchen. He’s trying to keep his focus on the bubbling sauce, but her relentless teasing has him breaking into a grin every few seconds.
“So… when’s the wedding?” she asked with an exaggeratedly serious tone.
Max side-eyed her, a smirk tugging at his lips. “Who’s getting married?”
“Oh, don’t play clueless” she said, folding her arms as she leaned a bit closer. “You and Charles. Obviously. The F1 power couple the world has been waiting for. Come on, Maxie, we all see the way you two look at each other.”
Max snorts, shaking his head. “You’re insane, you know that?”
y/n gasped with mock outrage. “How dare you dismiss my beautiful ship! I’m practically the captain at this point.”
Max laughs, finally giving up on stirring the sauce to turn and face her, wiping his hands on a dish towel. “Yeah? Well, if I’m marrying Charles, does that mean you’re left alone to dream about me from afar?”
She rolled her eyes, reaching out to poke his chest. “Don’t flatter yourself, Verstappen.”
Max caught her hand, tugging her a bit closer until there’s barely any space between them. “Then stop with the Charles jokes. He’d hate you for it, anyway.”
“Oh, he would not,” she insisted, brushing off his comment. “Charles has a sense of humor. You two are just too shy to admit your feelings. Besides, I’m sure he’s off gossiping about us right now. Maybe with Lando. You know how much Lando loves a good rumor.”
Max raises an eyebrow, stifling a chuckle. “You think Charles and Lando gossip about us?”
“Oh, please,” she said, waving her hand. “I bet they’re talking about all the hot drama from the paddock. Anyways, apparently Lando’s ego has gone from medium to extra-large lately?”
Max sighs, rolling his eyes. “Don’t even get me started on Lando’s ego. Sometimes I think he just loves hearing himself talk. I mean, did you hear him the other day? Talking about how he was ‘definitely the best driver’ and that I got lucky in Brazil for going from 17th place to first?”
y/n let out a giggle, covering her mouth. “I know! I’m like, buddy, calm down. He’s sweet, but there’s a lot of ‘me, me, me’ going on lately.”
Max shakes his head, exasperation all over his face. “I swear, he’s like a puppy. One compliment, and he’s bouncing off the walls. And don’t even get me started on him dating Magui, the influencer who used to be with Joao Felix. The same Magui who cheated on him, like, a million times. Lando swears it’s not serious but come on.”
“Oh, he lives for it,” she said, rolling her eyes. “He’s totally wrapped up in her whole ‘cool, edgy, unattainable’ vibe, but she’s just trying to be relevant. You know she’s doing everything she can to become a WAG.”
Max snickers, pressing a kiss to her forehead. “And I thought we were bad at keeping things private.”
“Please, we’re saints in comparison,” she said, wrapping her arms around his neck and pulling him in closer. “And speaking of secrets…” she leaned in, voice lowering, “do you know how Alexandra and Charles met?”
Max raises an eyebrow, intrigued. “No, how did he meet her?”
“She was friends with his ex and her sister” y/n said with a sly grin. “Can you believe it?”
Max chuckles, shaking his head. “Guess Charles has a type—and a way of meeting them through friends. Wasn't Charlotte also friends with the girlfriend before her?”
y/n laughed, nodding. “Right? And I swear, Alexandra and Charlotte look exactly the same. It’s like he’s got a specific blueprint for girlfriends or something.”
Max’s arms slid around her waist as he pulled her even closer. “Seems like Charles might have some explaining to do.”
y/n leaned her head against his shoulder, feeling his warmth against her. “it's fun knowing everyone’s secrets. Like how Pierre’s girlfriend, Kika, has that whole beef with Magui. She can’t stand her.”
Max raises an eyebrow, a grin forming. “Why am I not surprised? Didn’t Magui basically try to become a WAG overnight?”
“Exactly. Kika can’t stand it. Magui’s been copying her style, her posts, everything since the two stopped being friends. I swear, she’s just trying to outdo Kika at being the ultimate F1 girlfriend.”
Max shakes his head with a chuckle. “Kika’s a sweetheart; she deserves better than that drama.”
She laughed, tightening her arms around his neck as he hugged her close. “You know, we could give Lando a run for his money in the rumor department.”
Max laughed, kissing her once more. “You know what? I’m okay with that.” He leans down, murmuring in her ear, “As long as I’ve got you.”
She can’t help the smile that spreads across her face as she pulled him in for a proper kiss. This was their little slice of paradise—gossiping, cooking, and just being together with Max, in this lovely, imperfect chaos that’s all her own.

more of daniel taking care of max when he has a migraine that i didn't post ❤️ if you're just joining us, max had a career-ending head injury and left f1. he and daniel are married but currently broken up!
(part 1/part 2)
“Stay,” Max says, rushed, before Charles can get anything else out.
“Okay,” Daniel says. He tries to clear the lump in his throat. He’s been waiting for Max to say that word, but this is as close as he’ll get, probably. “Tilt your head forward for me.” Max does; Daniel gingerly presses the ice where his head meets his neck.
Max hisses, reaching up to grab Daniel’s forearm. It’s been so long since Max initiated touch with him; Daniel forces himself not to jolt.
“I know, baby, I’m sorry.”
Max groans, gradually loosening his grip. “Can we do the bathtub thing?”
“The– Oh, yeah, sure. Charles, do you have a bath?”
“I feel like you are being the doctor and I am the nurse,” Charles says. He’s hovering closer than a second ago. “Yes, I do, is it for something weird?”
“Nurses are very important,” Max says. Daniel wonders if the meds are making him loopy already.
“It’s not for anything weird. Can you fill it up with hot water? As hot as it can get without burning.”
“Fine. But it’s for him.” It’s too dark for Daniel to see the look Charles is giving him. Just as well.
Daniel stays there, crouched beside Max, keeping the ice pressed to his neck. Max’s breaths are shallow, like he’s trying really hard not to wince, but he’s mostly failing. “The medicine is gonna help,” he says, just for something to say. In the dark, eyes closed, Max reaches around for his hand. Daniel links their fingers, squeezing hard. Max’s hand is clammy and he can’t get a good grip on Daniel, all weak and floppy. “Tell me what feels bad?”
Max turns his face into a couch cushion, making a tiny whining sound. “It’s– like, all the bad stuff. I scared Charles with the throwing up.” He’s talking more, which is a good sign.
“It’s fine,” Daniel says. “He called me and I’m here now, so it’s fine.” He presses his thumb against where Max’s jaw meets his cheek. He’s so tense everywhere.
Charles comes back into the room. “The water’s in the bath. I’m saying again to not do anything weird.”
“We are going to do something so weird,” says Max. He groans as he swivels his legs around to stand up, pressing on his forehead. “Ah, fuck. Shit.” He grabs Daniel’s wrist, squeezing hard.
“Take it easy,” Daniel says, clearing his throat where it’s all thick. He hates this, he hates that Max hurts, that he’s still hurting, and he— he loves, sort of, that it’s him Max is reaching out for. It’s fucking twisted.
Max doesn’t ask to be helped, so Daniel doesn’t offer, just hovers as Max slowly pushes himself to stand up. But Max is unwieldy, swaying a little, and— and he grabs for Daniel again. Maybe it’s just because Daniel’s seen it all before, because he’s fed him and bathed him and sat with him in the middle of the night, but. He’s still being chosen. “Sorry,” Max says, like Daniel would ever want him to do anything else. “My eyes are not so good.”
“It’s fine. I have you.” I always will, I always fucking will.
Charles waves them through to his master bathroom. In the light, Daniel can see that Max’s left pupil is blown. He’s sweaty and he looks like shit, hair all messed up, but he’s Max, and he’s gorgeous. Daniel wants to hold him.
“Max, yell for me if he is doing anything weird to you,” Charles says, and ducks out of the room. Conceding.
“You could have told him we’re not getting naked.”
“I mean, I am taking my pants off,” Max says. “Can I hold onto you?”
Daniel nods slowly, feeling oddly like he should look away. He watches the ceiling as Max holds onto him for balance.
If Max notices him acting weird, he doesn’t say so. “You’ll get your pants wet,” he says instead.
Oh. Daniel glances to the door, where Charles is not. This isn’t what he expected when he woke up today, he thinks, as he’s stepping out of his jeans.
They sit on the edge of the tub, Daniel pressing the ice pack to Max’s neck. It’s an easy trick; get the circulation down into his lower body and away from his head.
“Charles could do this,” Daniel says, after a moment.
“I know,” Max says. He leans his head on Daniel’s shoulder, closing his eyes. He doesn’t say it, but Daniel knows it: I wanted you. “Do you have somewhere to be?”

Australia 2024
Max last saw you in the paddock in the summer of 2018 following your high school graduation. He had known you for two years, being Daniel’s teammate, and found you shy compared to your older brother. He was 21 then, so the two of you didn’t really talk that much, and he just thought of you as “Danny Ric’s sweet little sister.”
Six years later, he barely recognized you. You’d let your hair grow out, your muscles were more toned and defined, and it seemed like you’d become the queen of yapping. He had spent 10 minutes creepily watching you from the garage as you talked with Yuki, trying to figure out who you were. It all made sense when he watched Daniel appear, pulling you into a hug. Max blushed when he realized it, trying to shove down all the thoughts he was just having about the mysterious hot girl in the RedBull garage.
Daniel waved him over after spotting him, and Max made his way over to the group. Your eyes were shining as he approached, excited to see an old friend, and you pulled him into a hug to greet him. He was caught off guard at first but wrapped his arms around you in return, breathing in your ocean-scented perfume.
“It’s good to see you, Max; it’s been so long!” you cheerfully said to the Dutch man.
“I know. What has it been, six years?” He asked, even though he already knew the answer. He needed to pull himself together.
“Yeah, I think so,” you replied. Yuki and Daniel were called off to RB, leaving you alone with Max, who seemed a little nervous.
“So what brings you back?” He asked.
“Finally have the time off work,” you said. “I stopped coming while I was in school so I could focus on my studies, and then every summer, I had an internship so I couldn’t come to any of those races. Then I got a job right after graduation in St. Tropez, and it’s been so busy but so good. I get to do what I love and the town is so beautiful. I’m a marine biologist, so I always knew I’d get to call some coastal town home.”
You finished talking breathlessly, and Max looked at you with wide eyes.
“I think that’s more words I’ve ever heard from you than in those two years when Daniel and I were teammates,” he teased, and you blushed.
“I was like 16, Max,” you huffed, and he laughed.
“Are you coming to more races this season?”
“I hope so. Since I’ve been with this company for two years, I have a little more allowed time off,” you told him.
“It’ll be good for Daniel to have you around,” he said, your heart squeezed, thinking about how rough it’s been for your brother the past couple of years.
“You’ve been a good friend to him,” you replied softly, bringing your hand to squeeze his. His face flushed and you were amused by the power you seemed to have over “Mad Max.”
Later, Max walked towards his driver's room after debriefs when Daniel caught up with him.
“So my sister is back,” Daniel said, and Max continued, not looking at his friend.
“So she is,” he replied simply.
“I saw how you were looking at her,” Daniel said firmly. “Don’t make me say it.”
“You don’t have to say anything,” Max said, turning to Daniel with his signature smile. “Off-limits.”
Daniel nodded, still eyeing him but letting him go into the room.
Miami 2024
Since Australia, Max had followed you on Instagram and you had quickly followed him back, which led you down a rabbit hole of what he had been up to in the past couple of years. You weren’t the only one that had glowed up.
Your company had an office in Miami, so you flew out the week of the race to tour the facility and watch your brother in action. On Friday morning, you were walking through the hotel lobby on your way to the beach when you ran into Max.
“Hey!” You said brightly as you caught up with him.
“Y/n,” he said, greeting you. You didn’t miss the way his eyes dragged down to your chest, where your bikini was visible under your see-through coverup. “Headed to the beach?”
“Yeah, I figure a day laying out in the sun will do me good,” you replied.
“I’m sure it will.”
“Too bad you can’t come with me.” You said, subtly testing the waters, trying to determine if your interest was even slightly mutual. Max’s gaze was intense in your eyes, and you could tell he was fighting an internal battle.
“Don’t flirt with me, y/n. It’s not allowed,” he said sternly, which made you smile wider.
“Who said I’m flirting with you?” You replied, and he rolled his eyes.
“I see how you look at me like I’m a piece of meat,” he teased, and you laughed out loud.
“You’re the one who was literally staring at my tits five minutes ago,” you replied, and he slapped his hand over your mouth, looking around.
“Don’t say that schatje; your brother has eyes everywhere,” he said seriously, and your eyes crinkled in amusement. “I’ll see you later.”
Daniel's race did not go well, finishing in P15. You could feel the disappointment radiating off him when he got out of the car and your heart sank. You knew he would try to mask his pain with happiness for Lando getting his first win, but you saw right through it.
Don’t get me wrong. You were ecstatic for Lando, having met him when Daniel was at McLaren. The two of you were the same age, so you got along easily. Admittingly, you did shed a few tears when he crossed the finish line, but your heart ached for your brother.
He was silent when he met you after the debrief, and you launched into a very long story about a shark you were tracking off the coast to try and distract him. You hit the 7-minute mark, and things were finally starting to get interesting when Daniel laughed loudly out loud, looking over at you.
“I love you,” he said, and you smiled, moving into his arms.
“I love you too Danny,” you told him.
“No more sadness today, let’s celebrate Lando,” he said, determined, and you grinned.
Lando was already fucked up when you guys made it to the club that night. You hadn’t seen him after the race yet, so he picked you up and twirled you around when he saw you.
“I’m so proud of you buddy,” you told him and he smiled.
“Okay, then buy me a shot,” he replied and you giggled.
“You make so much more money than I do,” you complained teasingly. He pulled out his wallet, handing you his card.
“Just use my card for the night.”
You were at the bar waiting on the shots when you felt a presence behind you, a hand casually settling on your lower back.
“I’m surprised Daniel let you leave the hotel wearing that,” Max said in your ear, causing chills to flare up all over your body. Your red dress was tight on your body, and you’d be lying if you said you weren’t thinking about catching someone’s attention.
Tumblr media
“Hmm, so that means you like it,” you smirked, turning to step into him.
“You are going to be the death of me,” he murmured, and you shot him a wicked grin.
“Then get your affairs in order,” you replied before grabbing the tray of shots and moving back to the group. Max followed close behind you, congratulating Lando when you both reached him. You watched your brother narrow his eyes as he looked from you to Max, and you gave him an innocent smile.
Many drinks later, you danced in the crowd a respectable distance away from Max. That didn’t stop him from openly watching you the whole time, though.
“What’s up with you and Max?” Lando asked as you took a break from dancing.
“Nothing,” you said quickly and he gave you a look. “Nothing can happen.”
He nodded understanding, “You think Danny will kill him?”
“Most likely,” you said, sighing and looking back over to Max, who was talking to your brother funny enough. “His funeral, though.”
You excused yourself to go to the bathroom, and when you came back into the hallway, an arm shot out, grabbing you.
Max pulled you along to a darker area of the club with a tad more privacy. He stopped in the corner, moving you against the wall and leaving you no time to say anything before his lips were on yours.
It was a bruising kiss that had you feeling delirious, reaching up to tug his hair, which made him press up against you harder.
“Wearing that dress just for me hmm,” he said, pulling back before attaching his mouth on your neck, trying to leave a mark. You half tried to push him off but found yourself whimpering instead.
“Max, we can’t,” you said breathlessly. He finally let up, his lips puffy, as he looked at you with fire behind his eyes.
“I know, I just wanted to claim what was mine,” he said and you squeezed your legs together at his words. “Now, when all those guys keep looking at you in there, they’ll see my mark on your neck.”
“You are insane,” you said, amused but then panicked, thinking about your brother. “He’s going to kill me.”
“Maybe,” Max said. “That’s what you get for wearing that dress schatje, and he won’t know I did it. Your funeral.”
You knew drunk Lando probably blabbed immediately after you left him, and those words made that apparent.
Sure enough, when you made it back to the dance floor, your brother took one look at your neck and yanked you outside, lecturing you about kissing random men. If only he knew.

It’s sick how much daniel and max like each other:( Remember that teammates era vid where they had to ask each other questions from a set of cards and daniel pretended his card said “Did you miss me over break?” or smth and while Max was thinking of an answer, Daniel rushed to clarify he was joking “that’s not the question! that’s not the question!” and they both laughed their asses off. (Same interview where daniel asks if max’s first kiss was a boy or girl)
Like Daniel, let that man answer. I KNOWWW those two were codependent af and Daniel was confused and in denial why at the end of break he was lowkey excited to see his barely legal teammate:/
STOPPPP not the gay chicken daniel was trying to pull with max "will always out gay chicken the gay chickener" verstappen. daniel going for the good old boys joke haha wouldn't it be funny if we were slightly gay with each other like as a JOKE fully expecting a classic bro-y'haha yeah man i spent all week dreaming about you haha lol' meanwhile max was Earnest and Sincere fully ready to go 'well i did :) because it's always more fun with you' (the fact that he actually ended up saying that at some point it's so sick)...... the hints we got from their teammate era.....sneaking into their building.....ST TROPEZZZZZ....mechanics saying they were annoying and crayzeeee together when they were drunk. it was LOVE maybe it was platonic love but it WAS LOVE

I might be going crazy but istg I made the ‘el knows’ tag in a post about her trying to fix up Mike and will💀🙏
also I think it’s the 2 one bc she was thinking about max the entire time and I think that Mikes speech was just annoying her so it was kinda both bc she must of been like ‘bitch why the sudden switch up,oh so now that I’m dying you love me yeah right I see the way you look at my fruity arse brother you dumbass boy Jonathan told me you were flirting with him the whole roadtrip you bitchass moron’
Tbh if I were el I’d be pissed💀🙏
so yeah I think there might be a future argüèrent where el tells him she doesn’t believe him and all that but yeah, the I love you speech was an abomination I can’t believe some Melvin’s still thinks it’s endgame after that clusterfuck of a ‘confession’
Two options:
Mike's speech made her angry and helped
Mike's speech didn't make her angry, Max's choking made her angry and helped. Mike's speech affected nothing and wasted time.
Not looking great, guys.

Max Meeting The Gang
"A whole weekend?" Max raised his eyebrows, watching the football practice as if he understood a single thing about the game. Next to him, Vince was his perfect opposite, actually enthralled by it all and occasionally cheering.
Vince was wrapped up in a cardigan on top of his sweater and he hadn't shaved in a couple days, so his perpetual five o'clock shadow had leveled up into a full beard. He still looked pale and gaunt from that horrible flu bout, despite more than a week having passed since. Frankly, Max had been surprised when Vince showed up to his classes on Tuesday, instead of taking the day off.
"Yeah, we leave Friday after class and come back Sunday night," Vince answered, waving to his sister as the cheerleaders entered the field, "it'll be fun, Max."
"I don't know, Vince," Max shrugged, rolling his eyes as he saw a bunch of girls look in his direction and start to giggle, "they're your friends, not mine."
"Yeah, that's how you make new friends," Vince reached in and squeezed his nape in affectionate manner, shoving Max slightly, "you know my girlfriend already, that's two."
Max crossed his arms, chewing on his bottom lip, "I guess... I'll think about it."
"Well, don't think too hard, I need to know by Thursday because I'm grocery shopping before heading there," Vin shivered violently, pulling his cardigan tighter around himself and Max eyed him worriedly, but didn't say anything, "if it's anything, I think you'll really like them."
That wasn't what concerned Max. Vince clearly was really really close with his friends, if anything they seemed more like family than just friendship, and Max had a weird fright deep in his guts, like he was just about to meet Vince's parents. Not that it made any sense, he had never been the type to meet the parents of the people he dated, he knew Mr. and Mrs. Monacelli already and, oh yeah, he was not dating Vince.
However the fear was the same, that he was going to meet Vince's friends, they'd decide they hated him, and he'd kiss his friendship with Vin goodbye.
"Get out of your head," Vince jabbed his elbow in Max's tummy, not too hard, "it's going to be fun... I'd like if you came."
And really, did Max ever stand a chance against such words?
-------------
Since Max had a car and Vince was going to go grocery shopping beforehand, they decided to go together. Max wasn't so sure about all of this, he wanted to bolt and his stomach was churning with nerves, but Vince was making a damn good job of making sure he couldn't, like by riding along with him.
"VIN!"
Max looked up in time to see a blur of dark hair and then Wendy was tackling her boyfriend into a hug, kissing his face all over, "oh my god, you look horrible," she whined mid kisses and Vince chuckled, planting her down on the ground.
"Thanks?"
"You look so pale, doesn't he look pale, Max?" Wendy cupped her boyfriend's face, "this is like the third stomach flu you had in six months, I'm putting you in quarantine."
Vince laughed at that, wrapping his arms around Wendy and giving her a hug from behind, pressing a kiss to her temple, "you sound like my mom, honey."
Wendy let out a little scoff at that, but it vanished quickly as her green eyes paused on Max and her pout melted into a smile, "hey, I'm so happy you decided to come," she perked up to give him a hug, leaving him stunned.
Max's whole face was a shade of red, when the front door of the cabin opened and a group of people stepped out. He recognized Vince's friend, Luke, immediately, the one with dark wavy hair and just as tall as Vin was. He was chatting with two other men, who were holding hands and clearly a couple.
"Guys!" Vince called out their attention, "Max, these are Luke, Leo and Jon. Guys, this is Daniels," he introduced them with a smile and Max wanted to shrink in his shoes. He felt clammy and nauseous all of sudden, but forced up a lopsided smile that communicated he wasn't so anxious he could vomit.
The man Vince had pointed out as Jon, raised a hand, all smooth and formal, "nice to meet you, Daniels."
"Just Max," he cleared his throat, shaking Jonah's hand and then Leo perked up to do the same, although he looked much more friendly than his boyfriend.
Luke didn't shake his hand at all, only offered him a tight smile, "hi Max."
"Where's Bell?" Vince asked, frowning and squeezing Max's shoulder, "oh there she is."
Max followed Vince's gaze and then raised his eyebrows as he saw a stunning ginger getting out of the house. She was wearing a black bikini top and jeans shorts, curly hair falling like a mane around her face and Max's jaw all but dropped.
He stepped aside in order not to be stepped on by her, as Bella apparently didn't even register him before tackling Vince with a hug. She squeezed him tightly, murmuring in a strained voice, "I've missed you."
Then her eyes landed on Max and she raised her eyebrows, scrutinizing him, "that's Daniels?"
"In the flesh," he answered before he could think better of it and she seemed momentarily surprised she had asked that out loud and that he had answered. Bella measured him up and down, then smiled.
"I thought you'd be taller."
"Well, this isn't awkward at all," Vince teased, while Wendy wrapped an arm around his waist and laughed, "let's go inside the house."
Max was more than a little dizzy with the amount of information he had to absorb in such a short time. Vince and Wendy shared a room upstairs, as well as Jonah and Leo. Downstairs, Luke and Bella had the third room and Max was delegated to the sofa bed, in the living room — which he didn't mind in the least but still made a big show of complaining about, just because he enjoyed watching Vince fumble over himself in search of a solution.
"You're mean," Leo whispered, leaning in his direction, as Vince continued to try and argue with Jonah and Luke that they should all draw straws.
"I prefer fun," Max retorted, smiling back at the other man, "so how long have you known Vince?"
"Since his first week of college," Leo shrugged, resting his back against the kitchen counter, crossing his arms to his chest, "he came to college already in the team, but I was doing try outs. Adopted me on the spot."
"And here I was feeling special," Max rolled his eyes, "he does that a lot?"
"Adopt strays? Not as much as Luke does," Leo let out an amused huff as his boyfriend told Vince he was not switching room and that was final, "not you though, he hates you."
"Couldn't have guessed," Max snorted, as if he could ignore the way Lucas was all stiff around him or the over the top PDA he was displaying with his wife simply because Max had looked at Bella.
"He's just jealous that Vince likes you," Leo shrugged, patting Max's arm, "it'll wear off by the end of the weekend, Luke can't hold a grudge."
Across the kitchen, Luke said something in a low, snappy voice that caused Jonah's eyebrows to jump and Vince to frown, shutting his mouth in a tight line.
"Maybe we should intervene?"
"Nah, let them hash it out," Bella's said, pushing herself between them and resting her back comfortably against Leo's arm. She was holding a beer and looking Max up and down like he was a zoo animal, "so how long you were in?"
"Jesus, Bell, you can't just ask people that," Leo exclaimed, while Max let out an amused snort. He hadn't ever told Vince that he had done time, so he wondered how she knew this.
"Just two days, protest arrest," Max answered, but never quite started that conversation, since Wendy wrapped a hand around his wrist and tugged at it, all the while saying loudly:
"Enough with the gossiping, we were all gonna go in the lake."
He did not, in fact, want to go in the lake. Ever since the day before his stomach had been a mess, which Max was chalking up to nerves, and he felt weirdly self conscious of stripping before this group, when his belly was sticking out, bloated and crampy.
Still, it was a warm, sunny day out and he had no excuse not to go in. He paced around the shore, as Bella raced Wendy down the pier and they both jumped, followed by Luke and Leo, the blonde spluttering up water and pushing his hair back as he yelled, "c'mon guys! Jon!"
Jonah was all smooth, unlike his friends who still behaved like kids, he took his time to strip and neatly fold his clothes, before walking into the lake instead of jumping from the pier.
"Aren't you gonna get in?" Vince patted Max's shoulder and the man shrugged, feeling horribly out of place.
"I don't know about this whole weekend, man," he started to complain, but Vin cut him off with a dramatic gesture. He always talked with his hands, really not helping the stereotype.
"You haven't been here for an hour," he said with a heavy sigh, kicking off his shoes, "if you still wanna leave by night, I'll drive you back, alright?"
Sounded good enough, even if Max felt a pang of guilt at the idea of Vin wasting another 3 hours of his weekend by driving Max back to Doveport, then back again to the cabin.
"Alright-" he stripped off his shirt, wincing slightly when his stomach let out a nauseated growl and rolled, breakfast sitting like a fucking brick.
Next to him, Vince stripped his shirt and threw it on top of Jonah's carefully folded pile, messing it up and causing the man to shout all the way back from the lake, "VINCE!"
"C'mooon, get in, Vin! Max!" Wendy squealed, drowning Jonah's shout and climbing on his back so she could have some leverage. She was the shortest of the group and while Luke was standing on solid ground, Wendy was panting as she struggled to keep her head afloat.
Max let his eyes wander, roaming over the expanse of Vince's naked back and biting down a dreamy sigh. By now he had seen Vin shirtless - and fully naked, thanks to the recent flu from hell - more than he ever thought he would. Still, the guy was a vision.
He removed his own shirt and grimaced at his stomach, wondering if it was visible to anyone else how upset the organ was, then dumped his wallet and cell on top of his shirt and kicked off his shoes, joining the group.
The water felt extremely cold against his skin and he shivered violently, letting out a string of curses when Vince promptly dunked his head in the water as soon as Max was close enough.
He came up spluttering and cursing, only for Wendy to be smiling at him and shut him up easy like that, "Welcome to the group, Max," she whispered in his ear and Max opened his mouth to reply, only for Bella to dive and tug at his feet, causing him to go underwater once again.

I know this is basic asf but I kinda wanna get ur writing style, can u do a Lando one where she’s a McLaren driver and the just flirt?
Also do u write like papayatwinks or does she help u or something
(Ig you be the judge if i write like her or nah.. Its been a minute [4 years lmao] since I've written a fic but I got this soooo)
Tumblr media
Anything for you, my prince
Warnings: none, maybe use of y/n. Is that a warning? idk lmao
W/c: 506
Pairing: Lando Norris x driver!reader
A/n: FIRST FIC BABYY. Enjoy ig :) don’t come at me for wrong names of people on the staff i tried my best thank you. I also used a random Gp and McLaren’s results are not accurate here.
Summary: The team has doubled down on Lando’s championship fight, so when Lando reaches Y/n, team orders are put in place but Y/n doesn’t let him go without a little fun.
Tumblr media
AND ITS LIGHTS OUT AND AWAY WE GO
Y/n started on pole. She sped past max and kept the lead with Lando close behind in P5 after a bad quali.
“Perfect start y/n, now just keep the lead and this could be a good result for the team”, her race engineer said over the radio.
She knew she would probably have to give the position to Lando soon as operation “LN4THEWIN” was fully in swing at McLaren.
By lap 34 she was still in the lead. Lando however had gained many positions and was trailing close behind in P2 now.
“Lando is behind you y/n”, her race engineer reminded her of her teammate’s position.
“Has he asked for team orders yet”, she asked him jokingly.
“Erm… no I don’t believe so— no he hasn’t.. why?”
“Well, wouldn’t whiny little Lando want to pass me without a fight? That cute little baby would never hurt me”, she giggled into her radio.
“Will, what’s my gap to Y/n?” Lando asked his engineer.
“Erm, Lando you’re at 1.3 sec of Y/n you can attack at this pace in the next 2 laps.
“She also asked if you had requested team orders yet”, Will told Lando with mild confusion in his tone.
After hearing this, Lando chuckled and tried to increase his speed on his old tires. But, Y/n kept pressing.
“Tell her I don’t need Team orders to overtake her,” Lando told Will.
Two laps later and he was still behind Y/n
“Y/n were going to need to swap positions. Lando is clocking in better speeds right now and it’s for the good of the team.”
She wanted to scream and drive that eyesore orange car into a ditch. She wasn’t a quitter; she didn’t want this season to go like this, but it had to be done, unfortunately.
“Lemme guess, Lando put in a special request?”, she asked, mildly annoyed.
“HaVE YOu ToLD HEr yET??”, Lando yelled into his radio. Two laps till the last lap and he was stressed. His championship would be almost locked in with this win and he- sorry the team needed this desperately.
“Yes we have informed her of the team orders”
Three corners later and y/n opened the gap for Lando to pass.
“Can you open my radio for Lando to hear?”, y/n asked her engineer.
“Yeah, why?”
“I want to speak to Lan”...
“Your position your highness,” she said raising her hand in a little wave for Lando as he passed.
——
“So you think that’s funny?” Lando asked her
“Yes, you don’t?” She turned her head to him as he approached her at her computer.
“You made me look like a whiny baby, that’s a bit humiliating” Lando sat next to her in the swivel chair.
“I don’t think it’s humiliating.. Lord Norris” She bowed in mockery of his embarrassment.
Lando laughed, “Get outa here, and fetch me my hoodie over there”, he pointed to the chair next to her
“Anything for you my prince”

Would it make more sense to contribute money to my employers 401k to max out the match contribution or to instead just contribute a small amount and use the rest to pay off high interest debt or building an emergency savings (I have like 1.5 months worth of expenses saved and… $30k of credit card debt….). I was unemployed for a long time but now have a stable salaried job where I make enough to cover my expenses (credit card minimums, loans, groceries, rent, etc) and have a little left over that I divvy up between small treats (a movie ticket, a nice pastry, thrifted clothes), donation posts, and like an extra $50 credit card payment and I’m not fully sure the optimal way to use that small amount of money. I do need a small treat from time to time to not lose it (and socializing often costs money even if it’s a cheap activity) but maybe it’s better saving on getting a $10 movie ticket each month to potentially pay off my debt like a month faster a couple years from now? how do I create financial security without feeling like I’m putting my life on a depressing pause for a debt free future that won’t happen for a couple years (assuming I make the same money and don’t incur additional expenses)?
Yeah, you've hit on a really important piece here, which is motivation and long-term resolve. The Mr Money Mustaches of the world talk up the importance of stoicism and shit and preach reducing living expenses, but it's equally important to keep in mind what actively gives you enough hope, pleasure, and reinforcement to keep you going.
Cutting back on expensive nights out is one thing; removing all joy and socialization from your life and therefore nerfing your long-term ability to remain employed and earning is another matter entirely. Enjoy those movie nights out. Supplement with having friends over to stream something on your laptop and eat snacks, free museum days, you know, do lots of cheap shit in addition to the little treats, but dont deny yourself the treats. those arent extravagances, that's being ALIVE! and the only reason we aspire toward financial independence is so that we can live life as we wish to, rather than being owned by an employer.
Employer matches are pretty much a guaranteed double on your money, which is better than even paying off a loan in terms of earning potential. so I'd recommend socking away that 5% from your paycheck automatically, so that you never even have to think about it, and then budgeting any remaining expendable income on knocking out that credit card debt.
30k is enough to really hurt, especially with interest over time, but not so great that knocking it out is impossible. you can do this! make sure in particular to focus any unexpected income on paying down that debt. birthday money, tax returns, perhaps filling out some class action forms online, any little bit helps -- you may want to check out the Snowball Debt Repayment method, in particular, as a lot of people find it more motivating to have a few shorter-term goals. (Basically, if you have multiple credit card debts, focus on paying off the smallest one first, so you'll get the rush of having vanquished at least one beast).
Good luck!!

Same scenario as before, except it's the other four ! And, straight into the scene:
“Sandra!” Max yells, just a moment too late. The platform that was supporting the thing bends uncomfortably, a groaning sound that stills the world for a split second, before everything comes crashing down.
Sandra pushes Chris back, trying to follow after him. He falls off the stage. She gets caught in the shoulder blade, the thing pushing her forward, but not enough. The piece catches her mid-thigh and keeps her on the stage. Her cry of pain mingles with Chris', echoing in the empty theatre.
“Shite,” Trevor hisses, rushing to the edge of the stage, Annie appearing next to him.
“I'm the first-aider,” Annie says, swallowing the nausea down. “You three focus on getting Sandra out of that. After I get Chris checked out, I'll have a look at her, alright?”
Sandra huffs out a strained agreement. Annie points out Dennis, Jonathan, and Robert to come help her with Chris. They quickly make their way down to the main floor. Annie doubles back to the edge of the stage and calls for Vanessa.
Vanessa's eyes are wet, and Annie can see how she can't decide where to look—at Chris on the floor, pale and clearly in pain, or at Sandra, whose face was red with the struggle to not let anyone know how much pain she's in.
“Nessa, call A&E, alright? They know all of us by now, so I expect that the paramedics will be here soon.” Vanessa nods her head rapidly, her shaking hands fumbling for her phone.
“Alright, Chris,” Annie says, her voice soothing and steady, walking to him and beginning to examine him. As she knelt down next to him, she started asking the routine questions that she learned in her first-aider courses. “Who is the Prime Minister?”
“Keith Stormer,” Dennis answers confidently.
“Not your question,” Robert says immediately, pinching the bridge of his nose.
“I thought his name was Kier Starmer?” Jonathan asks, poking his head from around Robert's shoulder.
“It is,” Chris grits out, sucking in another sharp breath when Annie puts pressure on one of the sore parts of his arm. It's not broke, but it will be one hell of a bruise in a few days.
“Good, Chris,” Annie says, patting his hair softly in apology for the accidental bruise poking. “Do you have someone you'd like us to call for you? Anyone that can help out here, or at the hospital later?”
Chris uncharacteristically hesitates, glancing at Robert, before he clears his throat, “My Mum. I want to see my Mum.”
A thump is heard from the stage, followed by Max swearing for several seconds. Robert's eyes grow wide, simply staring at Chris in disbelief. Dennis frowns, scratching at the side of his nose. Jonathan and Annie share a look, and Chris swallows audibly.
“Please.”
--- Annie looks back at Chris and gives him a thin smile. “Are you sure, Chris? The last time she was here…” She trails off, not wanting to bring up the bad memory, but having to anyway.
Robert takes a few steps away from Chris, making sure to be quiet about it, and Annie's eyes flick to him. He emphatically shakes his head “NO” and makes an X with his arm. Annie nods nearly imperceptibly, but it's enough to let Robert know she understood him.
Though it isn't that hard of a task, to be fair.
“She's my Mum, Annie. She should know when I'm injured.” Chris argues logically. Or, well, what passes for logic in Chris' mind right now.
“But she's, she's,” Annie wracks her mind for an excuse to keep Celia from getting phoned. “She's not a paramedic or first-aider, Chris. She would just be another extra body to work around.”
“They're not paramedics or first-aiders,” Chris fires back, pointing with a pinky at the three men standing on his other side.
“They're Cornley,” Annie says, “The only thing keeping them from being either of those other roles are work ethic, confusion, and a tendency to fade into the background.” She ticks the reasons off on her fingers, nodding to Robert, Dennis, and Jonathan respectively.
Chris quiets down, and Dennis decides to sit down next to him. Close enough that Chris could feel his presence, but not close enough that Dennis would accidentally further pain him. “Your Mum doesn't really like us,” he says conversationally, leaning his elbows on his knees. “She'd probably just yell at us the whole time and then at you.” Dennis pauses, tilting his head in thought. “And then at us, again. She's kind of scary, your Mum is, Chris.”
“I know,” Chris mutters, shutting his eyes. “She scares me, too, sometimes.”
Dennis and Annie pretend not to hear his confession, knowing that the Director is not in his right mind and would absolutely hate finding out he'd been so vulnerable with them. “No, Chris, don't close your eyes. We don't know if you've got a concussion or anything, yet, so you can't fall asleep.”
“We should keep him awake by talking about plays!” Dennis suggests, straightening up.
“Oh, god, no,” Robert and Chris say at the same time.
Jonathan and Annie muffle their laughter while the two men stare at each other, betrayed. Dennis is just frowning, trying to think of another topic of conversation.
“The paramedics are probably almost here,” Annie says, once she's no longer laughing. “You just need to stay awake until they can check you out, Chris. We'll follow behind you in Trev's van when they cart you out.”
Chris looks at Annie, blue eyes hazy with pain. “Alright, Annie.” His eyes soften as she pets him on the head again, Dennis striking up a conversation with Jonathan about the latest footy match of the Prem League. Robert chimed in every now and again, but mostly just kept watch over them. Annie felt a surge of protectiveness over the cast, and especially Chris. Like hell was Celia Bean going to know about this.
--- Robert raises an eyebrow and scoffs at Chris' plea. “You actually want us to invite your mother, my ex, to the theatre? With both of us here? And you, completely incapacitated?”
Chris just stares back, a frown on his face.
“What, are you going spare now? What would having her here do?”
“She's my mother, Robert.”
“And?” Robert can't stop himself from asking. “The last time you spoke to the woman, she proceeded to only talk about the Westminster Dog Show and how her neighbour Violet can never take a hint.”
“What's wrong with that,” Dennis asks, looking between the two men. “My Mum calls and does the same. Well, she's usually talking about Bake-Off and her neighbour is named Maris and not Violet, but the idea's the same I suppose.”
“She called after The Most Lamentable… after having seen Chris nearly break his foot when the drawbridge fell wrong. And having Max embarrass him on national telly during their finding out they were twins. She didn't say one word about his perfromance,” he pauses, “performance, and then reminded him that he needs to, ah,” Robert stops himself.
“Needs to what?” Jonathan asks.
“Nothing, ignore me, just focus on the fact that my ex-paramour is an awful woman to have around right now,” Robert replies hurriedly. Chris gives the man a grateful look.
“Do you want to phone my Mum instead?” Dennis asks.
“How would that help?” Chris barely refrains from rolling his eyes.
“She's good in a crisis,” the small man shrugs.
“True,” Jonathan chimes in. “She's helped me with Bennie more times than I can count.”
Annie, Dennis, and Jonathan start talking about Bennie, trying to give Chris a distraction to focus on instead of the pain. Both Chris and Robert give them a mildly irritated but fond look.
Blue meets blue, and Chris mouths, “Thanks.”
Robert nods. Of course. Anytime.
--- Jonathan finds himself speechless at the sight of Chris pleading with Annie about this. Ever since he's been with the Drama Society, he's always had a, a, a caution around Chris' Mum. She never seemed to be alright with the fact that Jonathan was divorced with a child, but dating someone in the cast. Even though that relationship ended ages ago. He'd done his level best to make sure that Bennie never ran into her, and given that Chris' Mum showing up in person to the Theatre was as likely as England winning the World Cup, it has been successful so far.
Still, Jonathan is a parent. He knows what it's like to find out that your only child is hurt or injured in some way. He supposes this is what spurs him on to sit down next to Chris and start talking to him, Dennis and Robert's confusing argument a backdrop to it all.
“Have I ever told you about the time Bennie and I were watching Pan, and she started to try and recite your lines along with you?” He asks Chris. “Or when we watched A Christmas Carol? She was more excited to see you on screen than she was me,” he chuckles at the memory of Bennie cheering when Chris-Scrooge appeared.
This seems to distract Chris from following the line of conversation about his Mum. “No, you haven't.” Chris looks away, and winces when his eyes catch on the lights in the house of the theatre. They weren't bright, but it appears that all of Chris' senses were heightened due to adrenalin from the fall. “Does she really?”
“She does the splash sound then the cut to stage when you walk on,” Jonathan confirms. “She's decided that you're her second-favourite member of the cast.”
“Her first is you, I assume?” Chris asks rhetorically.
“Nah,” Jonathan denies easily. “That role is held by Auntie Sandie. I'm Bennie's solid third choice.”
“Doesn't that hurt? Knowing you're not her first choice?”
Jonathan thought about it while Annie murmured more concussion check-list questions to Chris. Once she gave him a tentative clear for concussion status, Jonathan answered the injured man's questions. “I don't think so, no. I know that outside of the Drama Society, I'm her favourite Daddy in the world, as she says. And anyway,” he leans back on his hands, “Loving her isn't about me. Even if I were her least favourite person in the world, she's still my Bennie-Button. She's still my little girl. And it's my job to love her regardless of what happens, you know? That's what being a parent is about, to me.”
Chris is silent for a long while, and Annie moves from checking him over to rubbing a hand on his shoulder comfortingly before going back on stage to check on Sandra. Dennis and Robert's argument seems to be over, now discussing what they're going to eat for dinner. Jonathan knows that it's only because Annie isn't worried about Chris as much as she had been earlier that they aren't as worried either. Jonathan is more concerned about Chris' emotional injuries that have become rapidly more apparent in the past five or so minutes than they have been in nearly a decade of knowing him.
“Oh,” Chris says rather faintly when he speaks again. “I've,” he pauses, wetting his lips and looking at some point on the stage curtains off to the left. “Oh.”
--- Dennis bites his lip. “Are you sure you don't just want a Mum?” He asks hopefully. Mrs. Bean scares him, and when she and Robert were dating, he hated having to go home to the flat and see her there, sitting primly on the edge of the sofa while Countdown was on the telly. And not even the funny one with Jon Richardson or Jimmy Carr. The original. And he knew that Robert didn't care for the original either. It always confused him why he would let Mrs. Bean order him around like some kind of dogsbody. Robert was the exact opposite in his mind.
“Why would I just want any Mum here, Dennis,” Chris snipes, inhaling sharply when he moves the wrong way.
“Well, I always thought that my Mum or Annie's or Max's were good in these kind of situations,” Dennis explains, scratching the side of his nose again.
“Well,” Chris starts, “I want to see my Mum.”
“But why?” Dennis couldn't stop the words from falling from his lips if they had been holding a neon sign with horns attached. The question was going to be asked, one way or another.
The furrow in Chris' brow deepened. “What do you mean why? She's my Mother. She raised me. She's my Mum.”
Dennis' frown matches Chris', and the two of them don't notice that it's dead quiet in the theatre. “Those aren't reasons, Chris.”
“Then what, pray tell, are good reasons, Dennis?” The sarcasm was palpable, but Dennis ignored it. Sometimes, you had to play the jester's role in real life and tell the king what everyone else is thinking.
“My Mum knows what to say to keep me calm,” Dennis starts, “Annie's Mum brings blankets and a soft plush animal with her if you phone her up. And Max's Mum has their chef make a nice, comforting bowl of soup for you to eat to help you feel better.”
Brown eyes meet steely blue with no hesitation. “If you really want your Mum here because you think she'll be able to help or make you feel better,” Dennis says, “then we'll get her here. But if you're only asking for her because you think you should, then we can get an actual Mum who will be helpful and make you feel better.”
“But, but she's my Mum,” Chris sounds lost, almost. Like the words Dennis says to him exist but do not make anything near sense. “I should want here here when I'm hurt.”
“Should,” Dennis repeats, tone non-judgemental.
Chris blinks a few times, barely nodding as he absorbed the information. “Should” is an easy word to use, but it's so much harder to confront what it means.
hello everyone today i woke up thinking about chris calling for/asking for his mother after being severely injured or ending up in some other form of severe distress and one of his companions has to gently remind him that her being here would just make things so much worse for him and all he can do is sob because he still just wants his mama soooo bad </3

God, where do I even START with Ben and Gwen??
For one, yeah, they're born on the same day. The same fucking day!! That's like some "written in the stars" type shit. Absolutely INSANE that the writers did that and then expected me to be normal about it.
I'm so obsessed with how the very first episode has Gwen fighting to protect Ben. She doesn't even like him and that's one of the first things she does as a character — she uses a shovel and attacks a robot that's about to shoot Ben and says, "No flying tree-trimmer is going to hurt my cousin!"
One of the first things that Gwen as a character ever does is protect Ben, and she never stops.
People who only ship Bwen based on how they bickered in the OG are MISSING OUT, that's literally just the tip of the iceberg!!
Time and time again, Gwen puts Ben first. Ahead of her own personal feelings, ahead of other people, ahead of the fucking planet. Gwen will jump alone into an endless pocket dimension to face off two of the most evil people in the galaxy to save her stupid fucking cousin. She'll throw away her normal life to learn magic and fight beside him because this dumbass clearly needs backup.
And Ben does it, too!!! They don't even like each other at this point in the show, and already, Ben is willing to sacrifice himself when Zs'Skayr threatens to drop Gwen off of a roof. He's willing to face his biggest fear to protect her. He has an absolutely world-shattering, self-image destroying break down when he thinks that he lost her.
THEY GET WORSE ABOUT IT AS TEENAGERS!!
As teenagers, Ben and Gwen are each other's best friend. Of course they are — who the hell else could understand what they've been through?
They are shown to be losers. Gwen is smart as hell and incredibly accomplished, and yet, she's only shown in a single episode to have one friend outside of Ben. Ben doesn't even have that much! He's bullied at school, the closest thing he has to a friend is literally his girlfriend. Neither Ben nor Gwen are ever shown to know anyone at all who isn't a) each other, or b) an alien related to their hero work. Not even any off-handed names mentioned to give the illusion of these kids having a social life!
There's even a joke about it:
Kevin: Ben, you sure this is the place?
Ben: That's what the tip said.
Kevin: Yeah, that's what worries me. You don't get tips, I get tips. You got no connections.
Ben: Come on Kevin. I've got connections.
Kevin: Yeah, like who?
Ben: Umm, uhh, like Gwen.
Gwen: It's true, he does know me.
(AF S2E1 'Darkstar Rising')
When Ben is 11, he takes off the Omnitrix. He leaves it off until he's 15, and Grandpa Max goes missing while hunting down some aliens. So Ben puts it back on.
But first he goes to Gwen. He goes to his best friend, the person he trusts more than anyone in the world, and asks her what he should do — if it's worth putting the Omnitrix back on.
"It wasn't the watch that was special, it was you. And you earned the chance to have a normal life," Gwen says. "You put that thing back on, and that's pretty much it for normal."
Nowhere in this scene is Gwen's life discussed. She's attending a prestigious private school. She's top of her jujitsu class. She's going to go to college early. She's got her whole life ahead of her, and she doesn't say anything about it. Ben doesn't ask.
And yet, without communicating it at all, Gwen helps Ben as soon as he decides to be a hero again. She's right there with him. Of course she is. Where else would she be? Gwen and Ben are attached at the hip, always. Where he goes, she follows.
Into space? She's there to watch his back.

(bonus points for pocket dimensions)
Tumblr media
If she has to follow him literally inside of the Omnitrix to save his stupid, self-sacrificing life, she will.
Tumblr media
In an alternate timeline where all their friends and family are dead or slaves and their enemies have taken over the world, Ben is the only one she cries over.
Tumblr media
When their friend (and Gwen's boyfriend) became corrupted by power and turned against them, Gwen was going to stand by and let Ben kill him.
Tumblr media
She begged, she pleaded, but she never raised a hand against Ben to stop him. She couldn't bring herself to — Ben even says as much. "You wanna know why you lost? Because you care about not hurting me."
Gwen is willing to sacrifice her humanity for Ben. Her parents, her future plans, her boyfriend — she can and she will throw all of that away to save Ben.
Ben taught her how to drive. Ben chews out her boyfriend when he's not treating Gwen right. Ben will fight until he can't anymore to protect her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ben and Gwen are constantly sacrificing themselves for each other, and the real tragedy of it is that it's not even mutual.
Ben will sacrifice himself for the world and for the universe.
Gwen won't. Because Ben is her reason for fighting.
She's not a hero like he is. She's Ben's cousin, first and foremost. He's her best friend. He's her motivation to fight. He can take her life into his hands and turn it upside down whenever he wants and she won't say a word about it.
Ben and Gwen are incredibly codependent — Ben because he's incapable of opening up to new people, and fighting side by side is the only way to get close to him, and Gwen because she decided a long time ago that she's going to be her cousin's weapon.
Gwen lives to watch her cousin's back. If he wants to fight, she will teach herself how to fight. If he needs a pep talk, she'll chase after him into the rain. If he's pinned down, she's watching his back — always.
They were born on the same day. They're so entwined with one another that of course they were. Of course.
No one else in the show means as much to Ben and Gwen as one another does. No one.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the way i get giddy whenever i see Bwen on my dash. "cousins who act like bickery siblings" really sums them up (with a delightful dash of Relationship Writing Fumble) since you didn't watch it as much, a fun fact for you: they were even born on the exact same day. my siblings and i called them "cous-twins" when we were growing up bc of that
HELLO??!?! BORN ON THE SAME DAY!!!!!!! they 100% are cous-twins omg how am i not meant to ship them? even when i was a kid and watched it, at first i assumed they were like bickering childhood friends who would probably be love interests. then i found out they were COUSINS, and my interest did get piqued but sadly not enough to watch it more often than in passing.
i loved that they were cousins but close enough to bicker exactly like siblings because they spent so much time together. they really are so adorable, and their dynamic makes for an amazing relationship, especially when they grow up and mature enough to not bicker as much.

just to add to the list of reasons why i do not like the redesign of maria's outfit in the remake and the narrative issues with it: maria's outfit is in direct contrast to mary's outfit in the original to reflect their different personalities.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
maria is wearing dark, bold pinks while mary is wearing soft pastel pinks and white/cream colors. maria's skirt is leopard print and mary's dress has a flower print. maria is wearing a short skirt and a short top that isn't even buttoned all the way and mary is wearing a knee-length dress with a jacket that's completely buttoned up.
Tumblr media
like, maria's outfit in the original is supposed to reflect her personality and how it is the opposite of mary's because maria is not only james' fantasy of mary in general but very specifically his sexualized fantasy of her. like, literally lol.
Tumblr media
so by having maria's outfit in the remake be so boring and bland and flat and much more conservative looking — and i don't just mean the amount of skin showing (or not) but just in terms of things like color and pattern and style — it feels like it's largely missing the point of the costume design in the original game and how it was all very intentional in order to reflect and contrast their differing personalities.
