Made me think how I think shows had to use older or available songs because of licensing issues. Probably why investment companies have been buying UP catalogues. In a way it drew in and retained an audience. New (& old) generations (re)discover them via media via TV (like singing or performances shows like American Idol or Glee), movies, plays & shows. Emotions are tied to moments- for some it becomes a classic. Longevity. Ex. Mariah Carey’s Christmas song, Holidays songs (4th of July), etc.
i was reading the other day about when the beach boys' masters were lost and how devastating it was to brian wilson, and of course famously frank sinatra founded reprise on the principle that artists would have full creative freedom and ownership of their masters and publishing rights, which he did not have at capitol, and he recut a bunch of his biggest songs (i don't consider them re-recordings in the same sense as what taylor is doing because his intent wasn't to replicate and thus replace them, which he couldn't do anyway considering the vocal changes he'd experienced, having to use entirely different session musicians and arrangements, etc, but he did do that to gain back some control). it reminds me of how paul was very upset when mj acquired the beatles' masters too. what's astounding to me is how many massive artists ARE choosing to sell off their work to these investment companies for massive sums. i just could never do that, i understand why losing her albums gutted taylor and why she's been so strident in talking about the connection between an artist and their art, and retaining your own work. it's certainly lucrative for those firms, though, and i'm sure we'll see many licensing deals come from those sales.
licensing songs out for films/shows/commercials can for sure sure bring a new/wider audience to the music! (it's funny because my mom asked me the other day if i thought people knew that my way, currently in a commercial, was originally a sinatra track, but the irony is frank hated that song. another notable one right now is the car commercial using everywhere by fleetwood mac, they'd been using it before christine passed away, but every time i hear it now, it squeezes my heart a bit.)
not having licenses also presents a headache - the first season of supernatural has all the wrong music on streaming because back in 2005, the wb didn't secure the rights for their classic rock in perpetuity, and it's a detriment to that season of the show. moonlighting doesn't exist anywhere on streaming because that show was so music-heavy and they didn't secure the rights in the 80s either, so whole deals with many, many artists would have to be done to get it on a platform. this has happened with a number of shows (dawson's creek didn't even have its own theme song for ages, until they worked out a deal with paula cole a year or so ago, and i believe she re-recorded it, idk if they've ever restored any of the other music). the streaming landscape has caused networks/producers to be more vigilant about this and make sure they retain the usage rights for their series ahead of time.
"Emotions are tied to moments- for some it becomes a classic." very, very true! like i've said, there are scientific studies on this! music so directly connects to our emotions and core memories.

For almost two decades beginning in 1952, Julia Warhola managed Warhol’s New York home, cooking and cleaning, making donations to churches, and contributing to his commercial work with her award-winning penmanship. By 1971, in poor health, Julia returned to Pittsburgh, where she passed away the following year. Warhol kept his mother’s death to himself but confesses in his diaries, “At Christmas time I really think about my mother and if I did the right thing sending her back to Pittsburgh. I still feel so guilty.” In 1974, he created nine posthumous portraits of Julia based on a photograph by Edward Wallowitch, acclaimed photographer and one of Warhol’s first boyfriends. These images feature the same technique used in Warhol’s lucrative portrait commissions.

Aight, the boys and Christmas. Go.
Shu- just when you think Guinness yet again will have to update the record for the most time spent asleep without medical inducement, blonde mop over here takes extra special care to hang up all the Christmas decorations, himself included. you would too after tasting Reiji’s fruitcake
Reiji- although he booked the perfect getaway from Sakamaki-household hell on Florida-lines’ luxury one week cruise, his entire trip — as expected — was ruined because he forgot Kevin. all the java in the world could and did not prepare him for the polka he had to listen to on the ride home
Ayato- his latest get-rich-quick scheme? making dash-and-runs for Charity Santa’s buckets. surprisingly lucrative. earns monthly the equivalent of what it would take to rent a furnished cardboard in Toronto, no mere feat. Fordes is even on a first-name basis with him now. but, for some reason, he still insists on the ugly sweater look. must think it goes with the one-pant-leg up thing he’s got going on he’s not wrong
Laito- is currently being blue-balled by the lack of chimneys in the neighbourhood. he figured parading as Santa would be the perfect excuse for breaking and entering your daughter’s bedroom and even spent a whole five dollars on a Dollarama Santa costume. sigh, he always figured the holidays would end with a bang, just not the kind coming from daddy shooting him in the face for making-do by entering through the front door instead. at least he had the courtesy to not enter through the back ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Kanato- Ms. Claus couldn’t be happier with ol’Saint Nick’s recent trimmings at the waist. the days of wearing the careful combination of one and three pairs of earplugs and mufflers on top of no less than four noise-cancelling headphones to drown out her hubby’s snoring are finally behind her. and who are we to thank for this Yuletide miracle? kirbo here, of course, who — without qualms — vacuumed up all cookies who had the misfortune of being out in the open. there is a petition to add him to the smash bros. roster being drafted as we speak
Subaru- went to the store to treat himself to a discount holiday lobster feast and somehow ended up taking home a pet clam. his name was Larry and he looked adorable in top hats, that is until Reiji steamed him for his fortified fish fumet. positively inconsolable ever since
Kino- so help him, he doesn’t care if he has to sit on the lap of every crusty-bearded mall Santa with musty nacho-stank for breath that our fair country has to offer. he will be the first kid on the block to own a firework shitting mecha griffin dragon cyborg, the sobering limits of reality be damned
Ruki- like the perfect twitter SJW eagle scout, he makes it his life’s mission to unleash the max-280 character rant on any and all cretins who dare post ‘merry Christmas’ instead of ‘happy holidays’. i’m sure that’s what the good lord would have wanted
Kou- his ass is commercial grass. you best believe his Christmas releases have gone more viral than Mariah Carey such that radio stations consider it a public service to put them on loop. subaru is practically seizuring from nightmares induced from seeing his face plastered just about fuckin’ everywhere, including tattooed to his own ass don’t ask, long story
Yuma- rumour has it that he keeps more than just the remains of poor Betsy (she made the most lovely roast) in the garbage cans parked outside on the Mukamis’ driveway, but who’s gonna check? not me, no siree bub
Azusa- it’s decidedly his favourite holiday. after all, a White Christmas means getting frostbite from playing too much in the snow, then burning his hands warming up by the fire, and subsequently scorching his tongue on the coco — what more could he ask for? :)

The Rapid - A China trader
In 1978 a group of spearfishers recovered a large amount of coins from an unidentified wreck off Point Cloates on Ningaloo Reef Australia. The Western Australian Museum then carried out two 8-week excavations from 1979-1980. Archaeologists from the Department of Maritime Archaeology and the Maritime Archaeological Association of Western Australia (MAWAA) examined the wreck from 1979-1980, examining the ship's timbers and recovering the artifacts removed from inside the hull. Among them 20,000 Spanish eight-real coins.
Tumblr media
An artistic representation of a china trader, here it is the Empress of China one of the first in the late 18th centur. The painting was made by Raymond Massey
The excavation provided a unique insight into life aboard one of these fast ships. The ship's equipment, provisions and personal belongings of the crew survived in good condition at this site. A wooden barrel containing salt meat and bones and bearing the inscription "Mess Beef Boston Mass" was also recovered at this site. Together with the coins, it was possible to reconstruct that the ship was the Rapid.
The Rapid was an American China trader from the early 19th century who was shipwrecked in 1811 on the northwest coast of Western Australia. China traders were the pride of the American fleet; they had to be large, well-founded, fast ships built specifically for the lucrative but competitive and rigorous trade. In their form they resembled small clippers but were only ship rigged vessels.
Tumblr media
Rapid’s bell (c) Western Australian Museum
On September 28, 1810, Rapid left Boston for Canton (now Guangzhou). After circumnavigating the Cape of Good Hope, the ship sailed across the southern Indian Ocean before heading northeast to the Northwest Cape on the Australian coast. It looked like a fast trip, but on January 11, 1811, a catastrophe occurred when Rapid hit a reef in the middle of the night. The next day a storm raged and the crew set the ship on fire, sacrificing everything to prevent the wreck from surfacing above water and attracting other ships before the captain could return and save the 280,000 Spanish silver dollars on board.
Tumblr media
The coins still in situ, found during the 1980 excavation (c) Western Australian Museum
It is remarkable that the entire crew of the Rapid Batavia (today's Jakarta) arrived alive, although some of them died afterwards. Captain Henry Dorr, his secretary and three sailors survived 37 days of privation in the 16 foot long, very leaky boat with only limited rations. On Christmas Island, the crew found resources such as rats and crabs to eat, but no water other than what they had collected in the sails.
Tumblr media
Rapid’s hull with one of her anchors remains (c) Western Australian Museum
Six weeks after arriving in Batavia, the opportunity arose for a trip home. The American schooner General Greene had lost her captain and most of her crew in Batavia, so Henry Dorr and part of the crew of the Rapid offered to navigate the schooner to America, where it arrived in Philadelphia on July 27, 1811.
Salvaging the money from the wreck was a matter of immediacy for the owners of the Rapid. The city of Boston was already suffering from commercial difficulties, to which were added the deteriorating relations between America and Great Britain, which led to war in 1812. Most of the coins were salvaged in the months following the wreck, and some $91,000 was transported to Canton in 1813, with others being stored by salvage crews in Madras and Java.
Their remains are still in place and are still object of research. The artifacts are in the Western Australian Museum

Christmas 2021: Day 2 - Home Sweet Home Alone (2021)
On the second day of Christmas, my true love gave to me...
Tumblr media
Two...hundred thousand dollar ugly dolls!
Now, the scheduled Home Alone movie this year would have been part 5 which actually takes place at Christmas again unlike that stepchild part 3. However, when life gives you the bounty of a fresh sequel hot off the presses then who am I to ignore it? Only a few weeks ago actually this arrived on Disney+ so I’m striking while the iron is hot and joining in on everyone’s hot takes. This movie is all thanks to Disney’s ongoing efforts to assimilate all media ever as it came with their takeover of 21st Century Fox. ‘New Home Alone’ was probably someway down on that list of talking points when people were more interested in Marvel essentially taking back control of the X-Men and Fantastic 4. Quite frankly, the big return on Disney+ that I’m waiting for is the new Honey I Shrunk the Kids. They got Rick Moranis back and everything! So long as people stop randomly assaulting him for no reason we should hopefully get to see what they’re making sometime in the next couple of years.
Home Alone is also in the news right now due to the original house being listed on AirBNB for one night only. An overnight stay at the low, low cost of only $25. I’m surpised it’s so cheap and that it doesn’t come up more often. I guess if you owned that house you’d probably get sick of all the random people doing location visits, and you probably wouldn’t need the money anyway, but it you rented that out a couple of times a year to some diehard fans, you’d probably cover the cost of your mortage. Maybe the cost is some sort of tier system, like for $25 you don’t get to sleep in that nice comfy four poster bed in the parents room. You probably have to share with Fuller, he wets the bed!
The big speculation around this new version was of course what role Macaulay Culkin might play in it. Would little Kevin be making his return, all grown up? After all, we did get that Google voice assistant commercial the other year, maybe that was just a teaser to something bigger? Spoiler alert; No. Not so much as a cameo. He even went so far as to tweet his non-involvement on the day the trailer came out. A trailer which apparently had nearly 80,000 dislikes on YouTube in the first few days following its upload. Not that you can tell now since YouTube took that away, strangely coincidental that they did so almost immediately after this and the likes of the new Nintendo premium online membership video being disliked into oblivion.
Tumblr media
There is a cute little easter egg though where we see that Kevin has transitioned his anti-burglary skills into the lucrative world of home security. Wonder where he got that logo from?
Tumblr media
Our Kevin analogue here is young Max Mercer who is surprisingly English for no adequately explained reason. Max is played by Archie Yates who was also in JoJo Rabbit. I still need to see that, I assume I’ll enjoy it based on the involvement of Taika Waititi. Max’s mother, Carol, is played by Aisling Bea who also has an English accent going on which seems to have been a topic of discussion online considering she’s Irish. I really don’t get why they’re English because it never really comes up in movie. The only thing I can think of is them trying to close a plot hole because when the big realisation that Max has been left home alone happens, it’s suggested that she ring one of her neighbours so they can go check on him. To which she points out that she doesn’t know any of the neighbours because they’ve only recently moved and the only people they do know are back in London. That just seems really unnecessary though, surely you could just as easily explain it away with them being American but having only just moved? Maybe all theAunts, Uncles etc that aren’t on this trip are several states away. Or maybe they just never bothered to get to know their neighbours? Or maybe their neighbours are all arseholes so they don’t keep contact? As we’ll see later on though, I suspect there are no actual neighbours even around...
Max’s father is American by the way so presumably all the annoying cousins and the like that are on the requisite trip that leaves Max by himself are on his side of the family. I had to go back to check who Max’s father even was because he shows up precisely twice within the whole movie; once right at the start and then again right at the end. I spent the whole time thinking Carol was a single parent.
The whole extended family are immediately one of the negative points of the film. If you think back to those first movies and, whilst being minor roles, some of the family members are big characters like Buzz or Uncle Frank. Even Fuller who is purely one note still serves as another straw on the camel’s back that leads to Kevin finally flipping out. Here you barely even see them outside of a wall of noise right at the start where Max decides to duck out and watch TV on a head rest display in the garage and promptly sleeps right through the taxi pickup the next morning. The only one you ever notice is Uncle Blake who is just really loud and obnoxious and is a big victim of the writer’s need to include as much dialogue as possible that deals in either modern day or dated references. Like when Blake describes his niece taking selfies in front of the Uber as ‘Hashtag ill judged’ or his comment on the Mercer’s not having a landline on which to call Max as ‘They don’t have a landline because it’s not 1993. What do you want me to do next, beep him after I’ve listened to the new MC Hammer joint?!’
Bizarrely, much of the focus throughout is placed on a completely separate family; the McKenzie’s. They’re having to sell their home in order to downsize due to dad Jeff’s ongoing unemployment. It’s here that Max crosses paths with them when he urgently needs to use the toilet so his mother takes him to the McKenzie’s under the pretence of a house viewing. It just seems really odd, like Max is being sidelined in his own movie, like this whole home defence thing is just tacked on to this melodrama about a family’s financial woes.
Max runs afoul of Jeff as Jeff is taking some family heirlooms out of storage, namely some old dolls which Max assumes Jeff plays with and says he’s one of ‘those guys’, whatever that means. He also calls him Frankenstein due to how tall he is, to which Jeff gives him the speech about how actually it would be Frankenstein’s Monster because Frankenstein is the Doctor. Oh God, is this how I sound? Carol makes conversation about how one of the dolls was on a antiques type show recently where some old lady bought one for $10 and sold it for 5 grand. Jeff later discovers that his doll with the ugly upside down face is a rare production error worth over $200k but can no longer find it and assumes the little brat took it because he wouldn’t give him an orange soda.
Tumblr media
The aforementioned Max sleeping through the taxi to the airport takes place and he discovers that he’s all alone. Much like Kevin, he splurges a little by playing video games, riding an ironing board down the stairs, jumping on a trampoline whilst riding a yoga ball and tries to do a little internet browsing. Or, as he puts it; “alright internet, show me your worst...”. Eww, creepy.
Tumblr media
He also does a little cosplay as Tony Montana.
Tumblr media
And even recreates the cocaine scene but with peanut M&M’s.
Tumblr media
But that’s not the only dress up he does. GENDER POLITICS IN MY HOME ALONE? DISNEY GONE FULL WOKE! CHILDHOOD RUINED!
Tumblr media
Meanwile, back at the McKenzie’s, Jeff’s much more successful brother is in town and is watching a little TV which seems to be some sort of Sci-Fi remake of Angels with Filthy Souls remake. There’s some very Palpatine/Mace Windu vibes going on here before Johnny pulls out some form of cosmic ray gun and starts blasting away. Jeff’s brother questions why they always have to remake the classics considering they’re never as good as the originals. You know movie, just because you’re being all meta and pointing it out doesn’t excuse you for doing the exact same thing.
Tumblr media
Jeff and his wife Pam decide they need to go take back the doll in order to save their home from the windfall, something they discuss openly unaware that Max is still here. He misconstrues their talk of ‘selling the ugly boy to some old lady’ and imagines being sat around being force fed gross old lady candy whilst they clean his cheeks with their hankies. Jeff’s failure to input the right code on the security system leads to an interesting development...
Tumblr media
Officer Buzz! Because there might not be a Culkin cameo but there damn sure is a Devin Ratray one! Though, this is a little awkward when Pam starts flirting with him to try and get him to leave. These writers sure are keen on clearing up their plot holes though as they then have Buzz call off a phone call made by the Mercer family who report Max being left home alone. Apparently Buzz’s little brother Kevin makes the same call every year as a prank. Nice to know he’s able to laugh about it now. They also cover the whole cops thing doubly with Max having a vision of him telling Buzz the truth, only for it to be turned back on him and his mother stuck in jail for abandoning him. Is this what writers have to do nowadays, try and pre-empt all the videos that come out from the likes of RLM and Cinema Sins?
Tumblr media
Interesting note; amongst Max’s traps are several bottles of generic diet cola with Mentos alongside in order to make into impromptu explosives. Apparently Disney have no issue paying for the licence to show the actual eBay but stop short when it comes to Diet Coke. Or maybe Coke don’t like being associated with this whole thing. I wonder if they take down YouTube videos where people do that.
I think there’s long been this idea of the latent maniacal tendencies with Kevin McCallister in the first two movies, all those violent acts on the Wet Bandits that he likes a little too much, and that’s something that this movie isn’t shy about following. Don’t let the diet coke bombs or the icy drive way fool you. Sure it’s inconvenient to be sprayed with coke or to fall on your arse but he’s just lulling you into a false sense of security. His very next trick after those two is setting the wife on fire.
Tumblr media
Okay so maybe it only goes as far as her feet but still, Jesus! I thought this might have toned things down it a bit since it’s on Disney+ but it’s still as bad as ever.
Tumblr media
I mean, he shoots Jeff in the head with a pool ball fired from one of those pneumatic t-shirt gun things they have at American sports games. Pretty sure Jeff would be dead.
Tumblr media
Not quite, Max straps a VR headset to him so that when he wakes up, he’s tricked into thinking he’s on the edge of a cliff. So, not only is he inflicting physical damage, now he’s mentally torturing too. Only, this is a very specifically designed VR game considering that Jeff can look down and see his actual body since he sees the Santa suit he’s wearing in order to trick Max in case he woke up. Either that or Max was able to code his own VR game with the Santa suit in the few hours between finding out the plan and now.
Though it all ends rather anti-climatically when they actually stop and just talk for 5 seconds and realise this has just been a rather absurd and escalating series of misunderstandings. The whole thing feels entirely unjustified though considering that the McKenzies are really bad people. Sure it was a bit torture porny at times in the other movies but ultimately the Wet Bandits or Marv and his missus were getting their comeuppance. They were out to burgle the house, kidnap that Prince or even kill Kevin that one time so it’s not so bad that he’s fighting back. Here though, all the McKenzies want is to get their doll back, plus you’ve sat through their backstory on their money troubles, so to have Max firing bags of sugar at Jeff’s ghoulies or weights at Pam’s head is completely out of line. You knew where you stood with those other movies, you had clearly defined bad guys. You didn’t have a harrowing flashback revealing Harry turned to crime in order to fund his mother’s dialysis.
Maybe I’m not giving the team behind this enough credit though, maybe Max is meant to be the bad guy? That might have been an interesting twist actually, where the McKenzie’s are a lot more innocent and quickly realise they’re in over their head, regretting even going to the house and realising they should have gone about things in a more normal way, but Max thinks it’s an act or gets caught up in inflicting the violence with all the booby traps. As it is, you want to sympathise with him for being left on his own but it’s hard to do that when he’s nearly killing these people who are struggling and just doing what they have to in order to keep their kids in the only house they’ve ever known.
That whole home invasion sequence is made especially pointless when it turns out the creepy doll was actually at the McKenzie house the entire time and Jeff’s nephew had just taken it to play with. He nearly ruins everything by throwing it down the stairs but luckily Max jumps in to save the day. Good job he did too because they’re going to need to split the sale of that thing in order to fix all the damage they did at the Mercer house.
On the one hand, I kinda liked this in my usual ‘so bad it’s good’ way as I was able to point and laugh at all the dumb stuff going on and it’s nice to revel in the fan service moments like the Buzz cameo or the familiar music cues like Setting the Trap or Somewhere in my Memory. But objectively it’s not very good, it suffers from that kid’s movie thing where all the grownups talk in this weird way with the references or trying to use cool words to be down with the kids. Like Pam referring to the local schools as ‘lit’ whilst trying to entice one of the prospective house buyers. And for a Home Alone sequel it feels like it entirely misses the point of the whole franchise considering it spends a good chunk of time pushing the kid to the side in favour of other side characters and then not even having convincing bad guys for the big ending sequence. I appreciate it’s a bit of a change which is welcome when you’re on the sixth entry to the franchise but it feels really misguided here. Maybe there’s a way you could do it whilst keeping that same sort of family friendly tone and not going into horror or something but to me you can’t tone down the villains without amping up the other side to balance things out.

The Best Thanksgiving TV Episodes
https://ift.tt/2IIxzXR
Halloween and Christmas are objectively the two best American holidays. One allows for us all to indulge in our gothic, spooky side, while the other comes along with family and cheer (forced or otherwise). There’s another holiday between them, however, that is at constant risk of being overlooked.
Thanksgiving doesn’t have candy like Halloween or presents like Christmas. What it does have, thankfully, is television. Just like its Halloween counterpart, Thanksgiving comes along in the fall at an important time in the TV schedule. Traditionally, the last week of November is when many network TV shows are looking for a quick boost of creative and commercial energy to get through the Christmas break. And what better way than to do so than with a Thanksgiving episode, where all characters are basically culturally required to get together?
Though Halloween and Christmas specials often get the most attention, there are many fascinating Thanksgiving-themed episodes of popular TV shows. Here are just some of our favorites.
Bob’s Burgers
Season 3 Episode 5 – “An Indecent Thanksgiving Proposal”
Fox’s beloved animated series has staked its claim to Thanksgiving as its holiday of choice, which makes sense given that the Belcher clan takes their food quite seriously. Of the many Bob’s Burgers Thanksgiving specials, season 3’s “An Indecent Thanksgiving Proposal” is likely the best.
This episode finds Bob reluctantly agreeing to “rent out” his family to landlord Calvin Fischoeder (voiced by Kevin Kline) to pose as his family for Thanksgiving dinner while Bob poses as the family chef. While this is a strong enough set up to begin with, the episode excels at escalation and goes to some wild places – even indulging one of the series’ favorite recurring gags of Bob losing his mind and befriending an inanimate object. Of course the inanimate object this time around is none other than a Thanksgiving turkey.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine
Season 5 Episode 7 – “Two Turkeys”
“Two Turkeys” is a prime example of what makes Thanksgiving such a creatively rich holiday for sitcoms and other serialized TV endeavors to exploit. Brooklyn Nine-Nine had already long established that both Jake (Andy Samberg) and Amy’s (Melissa Fumero) respective parents were crazy. All that was left to do was to get them in the same room together.

That’s just what “Two Turkeys” does. The whole family, including Jake’s dad Roger (Bradley Whitford), Amy’s dad Victor (Jimmy Smits), and Amy’s mom Camila (Bertila Dama), decides to have Thanksgiving at Jake’s mom Karen’s (Katey Sagal) house. Quickly, dueling Thanksgiving turkeys are set up, competitive juices start flowing, and a thumb or two is lost. “Two Turkeys” is Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s best Thanksgiving episode but “Mr. Santiago” in which Boyle intends to behead a live turkey certainly gives it a run for its money.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Season 4 Episode 8 – “Pangs”
Most TV Thanksgiving specials ignore the complicated origins of the holiday…and perhaps wisely so. For a long time, most sitcoms and network dramas lacked a real capacity to carefully discuss Thanksgiving myth-making while also addressing Native American genocide.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer, however, had no such misgivings and dives right in. “Pangs” is technically the beginning of a Buffy/Angel two-hour Thanksgiving event. It’s got all the usual Thanksgiving episode trappings: food, friends, and family. It also has an army of Chumash Indian Warriors coming back from the grave to punish Sunnydale for its colonial sins.
Chuck
Season 4 Episode 10 – “Chuck Versus the Leftovers”
This is cheating a bit as “Chuck Versus the Leftovers” technically takes place on the day after Thanksgiving. But Black Friday shopping and turkey leftovers are certainly a part of the Thanksgiving experience.
This episode finds Chuck’s mom Mary (Linda Hamilton) and international arms dealer Alexei Volkoff (Timothy Dalton) coming over to Chuck’s place for a day-after-Thanksgiving leftover feast. Meanwhile Chuck’s friends at Buy More have to contend with the Black Friday shopping crowd. This is the definitive Chuck Thanksgiving episode as it highlights what the show does well. It balances the high-octane drama of Chuck’s spy life with his supposedly tranquil home life. Getting to enjoy Linda Hamilton and Timothy Dalton going head to head is just icing on the Jell-O salad.
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
Season 1 Episode 12 – “Talking Turkey”
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air features a few Thanksgiving episodes over its six season run but its first attempt remains the best. Will’s mom Viola makes one of her rare series appearances here when she joins the Banks’ household for Thanksgiving.
After the parents see how the kids mistreat everyone’s beloved butler Geoffrey, the gang is forced to cook a Thanksgiving meal on their own. Predictably it doesn’t go well. This is a big episode for all involved but for Viola and Aunt Viv in particular. It’s fascinating to watch through a modern lens, given original Aunt Viv actress Janet Hubert’s steadfast lack of involvement in all future Fresh Prince reboots and reunions.
Friday Night Lights
Season 4 Episode 13 – “Thanksgiving”
So many of the best moments in Friday Night Lights happen at the Taylor family dinner table. How then could the show pass up an opportunity for a good-old fashioned Thanksgiving episode?
“Thanksgiving” is an excellent episode that also serves as its respective season’s finale. This hour concludes Coach Taylor’s first year with the East Dillon Lions in truly satisfying fashion. Before that there’s still plenty of time for a heart-to-heart with QB Vince Howard and Buddy Garrity’s attempts at frying a turkey.
Friends
Season 5 Episode 8 – “The One With All the Thanksgivings”
Perhaps no series on television took the responsibility of Thanksgiving episodes more seriously than Friends. Friends has so many Thanksgiving-themed episodes that the entire list could essentially be made up of them. And that makes sense given the show’s premise of friends as a found family in the big city.
For the purposes of this list, however, let’s go with the aptly-named “The One With All the Thanksgivings.” In this fifth season episode, Ross, Rachel, Phoebe, Monica, Joey, and Chandler flashback to all of the Thanksgivings they’ve shared together. Consider this a Canterbury Tales of Thanksgiving … that just happens to feature Monica with a turkey on her head.
Gilmore Girls
Season 3 Episode 9 – “A Deep Fried Korean Thanksgiving”
Stars Hollow, Connecticut on Gilmore Girls just looks like a town itching for a good fall holiday. The New England hamlet is the kind of place that absolutely lights up with some fallen leaves and the warm aroma of turkey in the oven. Thankfully, the show agreed and rolled out a Thanksgiving-centric episode in its third season.
“A Deep Fried Korean Thanksgiving” adopts the tried and true “accepted too many dates to the ball” trope as Lorelai and Rory are pulled among four competing Thanksgiving dinners: Lorelai’s parents, Sookie, Luke, and Lane. It’s a jam-packed (and tofurkey-packed) episode that still somehow finds the time to introduce the beloved Cat Kirk.
How I Met Your Mother
Season 3 Episode 9 – “Slapsgiving”
In many ways, How I Met Your Mother was the natural sitcom successor to Friends. Like its NBC forefather CBS’s comedy followed a group of friends living their best lives in New York City. Another area in which HIMYM picks up the Friends ball and runs with it is with its appropriately respectful treatment of Thanksgiving.
How I Met Your Mother loves itself a good Thanksgiving episode. None of them, however, are better than the season 3 installment “Slapsgiving.” This episode finds the gang gathering at Marshall and Lily’s house for their first Thanksgiving as a married couple. Meanwhile, Barney is living in mortal fear of the third slap Marshall owes him due to losing a “slap bet.” That countdown to The Slap imbues an already excellent episode with a real fun sense of urgency.
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Season 9 Episode 10 – “The Gang Squashes Their Beefs”
Dennis, Dee, Charlie, Mac, and Frank have made a lot of enemies during It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s very long, very creatively lucrative run. That’s why for the show’s ninth season finale, the gang decided to gather several of the folks they wronged together and get to squashing some beefs. And what better way to do so than with a nice Thanksgiving dinner?

This installment is a one big setup to a dinner table with the gang’s rogue’s gallery at the end and it is all well worth the wait. Some dry turkey and even dryer conservation is nowhere near enough to make nice with the McPoyles, Hwang, Cricket, Gail the Snail, or Bill Ponderosa, but bless the gang for trying anyway.
Mad Men
Season 1 Episode 13 – “The Wheel”
Not many Thanksgiving episodes can lay claim to being their respective series best hours, but then again AMC’s all-time classic Mad Men isn’t just any other series. Season 1 finale “The Wheel” is certainly among the best Mad Men installments ever and it just so happens to take place during the week of Thanksgiving 1960.
The Thanksgiving timeframe serves as an elegiac backdrop and Mad Men viewers are forced to confront what kind of man Don Draper really is. Don delivers the pitch of his lifetime to Kodak executives as he urges them to imagine their latest photo wheel creation not as a sleek, dispassionate time machine, but a carousel that can bring families back home to all the most important times of their lives. Then when Don returns home for Thanksgiving, he discovers what he probably already knew – those times are gone and no carousel can bring them back.
Master of None
Season 2 Episode 8 – “Thanksgiving”
OK, we know we just said that not many Thanksgiving episodes can lay claim to being their respective series’ best but here is another contender. “Thanksgiving” is the eighth episode of Master of None’s second (and thus far, final) season and it’s a perfect example of everything the show does well.
This episode takes a break from Dev’s (Aziz Ansari) storyline in the present to delve into the past of his friend Denise (Lena Waithe). Over several Thanksgiving meals throughout the years, Denise comes to realize her attraction to women, processes it, and does her best to communicate her identity to her mom (Angela Bassett). It’s a touching saga made possible by the Thanksgiving season. It also serves as many viewers’ introduction to the storytelling dynamo that is Lena Waithe.

The O.C.
Season 1 Episode 11 – “The Homecoming”
Mid-2000s teen drama The O.C. always paid proper respect to holidays. Who could forget the Cohen family’s dutiful observation of “Chrismukkah?” But the series’ first Thanksgiving installment in season 1 might just be its best holiday offering ever.
“The Homecoming” is a wonderful example of everything that The O.C. does well. The plot splits itself in two with Ryan (Ben McKenzie) and Marissa (Mischa Barton) heading back to Ryan’s hometown of Chino to meet Ryan’s brother in prison. That sets up a ludicrous crime arc that would make even the Riggins brothers of Friday Night Lights jealous. Meanwhile, back at the Cohen household, Seth’s (Adam Brody) inelegant juggling of the two women in his life comes to a chaotic head.
Orange is the New Black
Season 1 Episode 9 – “Fucksgiving”
Orange is the New Black’s Thanksgiving episode debuted all the way back in 2013, when Netflix was just proving itself to be a spot for original content. So imagine viewers’ surprise that in the streaming world, you can include the F-word in episode titles.
As is the case in every OITNB episode, a lot happens in this hour-long installment. But with Thanksgiving as the backdrop, there’s a real festive air to the proceedings. Perhaps it helps that Taystee (Danielle Brooks) is set to be released and returned to the real world or that Pennsatucky (Taryn Manning) is praying for the rightful end of said real world. In any case, “Fucksgiving” passionate conclusion makes a convincing case that Thanksgiving is among the sexiest of holidays.
Riverdale
Season 4 Episode 7 – “The Ice Storm”
Riverdale’s Thanksgiving episode is about just as insane as one would imagine a Riverdale Thanksgiving episode would be. “The Ice Storm” (which borrows its name and concept from Rick Moody’s 1994 novel of the same name) finds Jughead and Betty stranded at Stonewall Prep due to an ice storm on Thanksgiving while Archie hosts a Thanksgiving dinner at the community center.

Riverdale Season 4 Ending Explained

Of course this episode features cartoonish levels of scheming, but it also takes the responsibility of the holiday seriously. Riverdale spends the episode’s opening once again addressing the tragic death of Luke Perry and his character, Fred Andrews. Amid all the plot twists, the show still excels at putting family first.
Seinfeld
Season 6 Episode 8 – “The Mom and Pop Store”
Many episodes of Seinfeld feature dense plotting, but even by those standards “The Mom and Pop Store” is a very busy episode of television. These 22 minutes feature Jerry getting tricked by a mom and pop shoe store, George trying to find Jon Voight, and Kramer having some major nosebleed problems.
But the Thanksgiving portion of the episode is what stands out as Elaine gets the invite to Jerry’s dentist’s (played by none other than Bryan Cranston, beginning his fruitful arc of Seinfeld guest appearances) Thanksgiving. Jerry is unsure if he himself is invited, but when dental issues begin to pop up, he decides that a Thanksgiving dinner full of dentists might be a useful place to stop by.
Smallville
Season 6 Episode 7 – “Rage”
While it was cruel for Smallville to wait until after the Jonathan Kent era to hold its first Thanksgiving episode, it’s nice that it got around to it all the same. Granted, Thanksgiving doesn’t factor much into “Rage.” Instead much of the hour deals with Clark assisting his good friend Oliver Queen with his mysterious addiction.
But when the Thanksgiving table moment finally does arrive, it’s a real winner. In terms of pre-Arrowverse WB/CW warm and fuzzies, it’s hard to top a dinner featuring Clark Kent, Martha Kent, Lionel Luther, and Green-freaking-Arrow. And of course the presence of NXIVM’s own Allison Mack as Chloe Sullivan just adds a strange glow over all.
The Sopranos
Season 3 Episode 8 – “He Is Risen”
Many classic Sopranos scenes take place around the Sopranos family dinner table (mostly so Tony can yell at the insufferable A.J.). It’s only natural then that the show would feature a Thanksgiving episode at some point during its classic six-season run.

The Sopranos: The Most Memorable Hits
By Tony Sokol
That moment comes midway through the excellent season 3. Granted, Thanksgiving doesn’t play a major role in this hour, aside from Janice’s creepy elderly boyfriend muttering “he is risen” during dinner. But this episode is filled with classic Sopranos moments all the same: the introduction of Gloria Trillo, the death of Gigi Cestone on the toilet, and Ralph’s continued seasons-long efforts to dig his own grave. All of those events will factor heavily in the episodes to come, for now, however, The Sopranos is happy to just pass the gravy (actual gravy, not red sauce).
South Park
Season 15 Episode 13 – “A History Channel Thanksgiving”
Over the span of its staggering 23 seasons (plus one Pandemic Special), South Park has revealed a real affinity for holiday episodes, particularly the Christmas ones in which the show can feature longtime characters Santa Claus and Jesus Christ.
In this season 15 episode, however, South Park turns its satirical eye to Thanksgiving…or the History Channel version of it more accurately and weirdly. After the boys are assigned a paper on the history of Thanksgiving, they watch the History Channel to discover that the holiday’s origins are far more extraterrestrial than expected. Soon, Stan and company are involved in an interdimensional Thanksgiving adventure involving wormholes and Natalie Portman.
The West Wing
Season 2 Episode 8 – “Shibboleth”
A “Shibboleth” is a long-standing tradition or custom (often a phrasing or even a single word) that distinguishes one group of people from another. The best episodes of The West Wing seek to understand what the shibboleths of this strange country are…and “Shibboleth” is undoubtedly one of the series’ best episodes.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
It’s the night before Thanksgiving at the White House and the West Wing staff are all facing decisions. CJ has been tasked with choosing between two turkeys to pardon; Toby, Josh, and Sam must figure out how to watch football on Thanksgiving day; and most seriously: President Bartlett has to decide what to do with a boat of persecuted Chinese evangelical Christians seeking asylum. It’s a typically hectic day in the West’s most powerful executive office, but the show explores how one holiday can bring all the chaos to a halt. For a little bit at least.

Poultry Farming
Is Poultry Farming a Profitable Business? Live Stock 101
Is poultry farming a profitable business? This is one of the frequently asked questions about the livestock business. But most people don't know that poultry farming in Nigeria is a gold mine that's yet to be fully exploited.
With over 200 million population in the country, you don't need a soothsayer to know that poultry farming is a lucrative business. Interestingly, if you have the right strategy in place, poultry farming is a good business to start.
So, if you are looking for information about poultry farming for beginners check here vesti dana, you will find this article interesting.
What is Poultry Farming?
Before I answer the question "is poultry farming a profitable business"? Let me quickly explain poultry farming to you.
Poultry farming involves raising birds like chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese mainly for their meats and eggs. When managed correctly, poultry farming in Nigeria is one of the most viable agricultural business ideas.
Surprisingly, it's easy to start a poultry farm. It doesn't require much capital. You can always start small and expand it later. You can even start this business in your home if you have enough space.
Is Poultry Farming a Profitable Business In Nigeria?
Yes! Poultry farming is a profitable business in Nigeria. The market for livestock in Nigeria is large. And you can take advantage of the large market if you are strategic in your approach.
In 2017, This Day Newspaper revealed that the Nigerian Poultry Industry is worth over 1.2tn. 1.2 trillion naira? Wow! Indeed, domestic birds farming is a goldmine.
Let me surprise you with another shocking statistic. Do you know that Africa's egg industry grows by 3.9% annually? And  Nigeria is the biggest market for eggs for sub-Saharan Africa.
Don't forget that egg is a product of poultry. You see! If you are business-minded, you will make it big if you start poultry farming in Nigeria.
Furthermore, the Nigerian government has been making regulations to encourage poultry farming business. For instance on turske serije, in 2003, the federal government banned the importation of chicken in Nigeria. However, one day old live chickens are exempted from the regulation.
From what you have read so far, the answer to the question - is poultry farming a profitable business is Yes. However, it's not a get rich quick scheme. It will help if you put in commitment and a level of hard work.
How Profitable is Broiler Farming in Nigeria?
Poultry farming is a general term that covers the rearing of domestic birds, including broilers. It's normal for you to ask how profitable is broiler farming in Nigeria before you start it.
Let me tell you something; broiler farming is one of the most lucrative aspects of poultry farming business. Their demands are high, and it's relatively cheaper to train broilers than other domestic birds.
On average, it costs about N1,509 to nurture a broiler bird to maturity. This includes the cost of getting the chick, feeding, treatments, and other unplanned expenses.
Again, try to be strategic with your poultry farming business. Always target the sales of your broilers and other birds towards the peak period. The peak period for the sales of domestic birds is; Christmas, New year, Easter, Sallah, etc.
During these periods, the demand for poultry birds is very high. And if you understand the interplay of the law of demand and supply, you will know that price will increase.
You could even sell a broiler as high as N4000 to N5000.  Do the Maths, if you are selling a broiler that costs you about N1,509 (Including the cost of buying the chick) to nurture at N4000, that's profitable, isn't it?
I think I have provided a good answer to the question "is poultry farming a profitable business". From what I said so far, you can see that if you are strategic in your approach, poultry is a profitable business.
How To Increase The Profitability of Broiler Production
Like I promised earlier, this article will provide you with all the information you need about poultry farming for beginners.
One of the reasons my answer to the question "is poultry farming a profitable business" is yes, is because I understand that with the right strategy, you will 'cash-out' real-time doing this business.
If you are new to poultry farming, here are some tips on how to increase your profitability.
#1. Don't Waste Your Feed
One of the mistakes poultry farmers make is not doing anything about feed waste. You may think that feed doesn't cost much. But if you calculate the accumulated waste over time, you will be shocked.
Ensure you invest in high quality feeds. Pay attention to quality instead of quantity. As a rule, don't stockpile feed. Stockpiling feed encourages waste, and you may end up spending more than necessary.
#2. Don't Use one Feed For All Breed of Broilers
I know this may sound strange to you. But it's not advisable to use one feed for all broilers. Times are changing, and there are a series of developments in the poultry business.
For instance, there are new breeds of broilers that consume less feed and grow faster. If you are rearing these birds, you must give them their specific meals. Otherwise, they may end up eating more without growing fast.
Do you understand what I just explained? In a nutshell, broilers that grow faster and eat less, have their feed. If you aren't feeding them with it, they will not grow as expected.
#3. Use Low-Cost Ingredients
Don't allow anybody to deceive you. Feeding your broilers with high-cost ingredients won't change anything. Discuss with people who are currently into poultry farming; they will be able to guide you accordingly.
#4. Be Strategic in Your Approach
There's no way your poultry farming business will be profitable if you aren't strategic about it. Always target the sales of your birds towards major festive periods like Sallah, Easter, Christmas, New year, etc.
How to Start a Poultry Farm in Nigeria
Now that you have the answer to the question "is poultry farming a profitable business in Nigeria, I think it would be nice to understand how to start a poultry farm.
But your poultry farming business can't succeed if you don't have a positive mindset and the skills. Even though poultry farming business has growth potential, you need to learn the skills. And understand the best way to care for the birds you are rearing.
Here is a step by step process to start a poultry farm;
#1. Choose the Type of Poultry Bird You Want to Rear
Before you start a poultry farming business, you need to decide on the type of bird you want to rear. You can either rear birds for their meats or eggs.
Generally, most poultry farmers in Nigeria rear one of the following domestic birds;
Layers: If you are starting a poultry business because of commercial eggs production, you should consider layers.
You can start rearing layers when they are one day old. Interestingly, they start laying eggs when they are about 18 to 19 years old. They will continue laying eggs till 72  to 78 weeks.
Layer poultry farming in Nigeria is lucrative, and the market is large. After all, almost every household in Nigeria consumes eggs. The market is endless, and if you are strategic about it, you will earn a fortune from layer poultry farming.
Broilers: Broiler production is one of the most profitable aspects of poultry farming in Nigeria. It involves rearing young males and female chicks for meat. Interestingly, when you manage your broilers very well, they could grow from 40 g (Hatch weight) to about 1.2 to 2kg within 6 weeks.
Cockerels: Unlike broilers and layers, cockerels can easily survive in any environment. You can also sell them as meat. But they don't grow as fast as broilers. They cost more to rear, but their demand is high in the Nigerian market.
If you have the means, you should consider rearing more than one type of bird. You can consider raising layers and broilers. But if you have limited resources, you can start with broilers, and add layers later.
#2. Select a Location for the Farm
Once you decide on the type of bird to rear, the next step is to choose a location. Sometimes, the location you site your poultry farm could contribute to its success or otherwise.
Ideally, you should get a piece of land and build a spacious cage for your birds. The size of the land depends on the number of birds you want to rear.
However, if you don't have the resources to buy land, you can build a space at the back of your house.
By asking the question "is poultry farming a profitable business in Nigeria?" It's obvious you are a bit new to the business. Therefore, try to start small, learn from your mistakes, and expand as time goes on.
Factors to Consider When Selecting a location for Your Poultry Farming Business in Nigeria
You don't just choose a location for your poultry business. It's important to make your decision based on certain factors. Some of them are;
Nearness to neighbouring residence: Your poultry farm should be a bit far from a neighbouring residence. Of course, it shouldn't be too far so that people can come and patronize you.
The prevailing wind direction in the neighbourhood
Nearness to an adequate source of water
Easy access to land for manure application
#3. Provide Good Housing and Shelter for the Birds
The housing of your poultry birds is as important as the poultry farm itself. I hope you understand the previous statement? What I mean is that your poultry birds can't survive if you don't provide good housing and shelter for them.
There are different housing designs you can construct for your birds, depending on the breeds. For instance, the housing design of a layers' poultry farm is different from that of a broiler.
So, please do your research, discuss with experienced poultry farmers, they should be able to advise you on what to do.
#4. Feeding and Medication Plans
Before you start your poultry farming business, you need to have a feeding and medication plan for your birds. Generally, poultry birds are prone to infections. So, always feed them with nutritious, net, and dry food.
It's not advisable to buy poultry birds' feeds in bulk. They need fresh food to survive. So, please give them a good meal and medication.
However, try as much as possible to avoid waste. Remember, the lower your cost of nurturing a bird, the higher the profit.
#5. Marketing and Sales Strategy
The previous points were the operational aspect of poultry farming. And here's a big deal. I'm sure you aren't rearing your birds to give people for charity. I don't think so.
Try to have a marketing and sales strategy in place for your poultry business. That's what will differentiate you from the crowd.
Like every other poultry farmer, you hope to get good sales after the harvest. Don't you? But you can't achieve this if you are doing the same thing every other person is doing.
Instead of taking your birds or eggs to the market to sell like every other person, you can use a different approach. Here's how to market your poultry farm products;
Build a strong online presence for your poultry farm
We are in the digital age. And you can add a touch of digital marketing to your poultry business. Build a brand around your poultry business online. Have a website, social media pages, and invest in digital advertising.
I know what you are thinking. It will increase your operational cost. That's true, but in the long run, it will give you an edge over other people in the industry.
You can even have an option where people can order online on your website. Or let them know on your social media pages that you do home delivery.
Let me quickly tell you a story about my friend Ola.
Ola and I did NYSC together. He studied Agriculture related courses. But he told me he was going to start a poultry farm after our NYSC in 2015. I didn't take him seriously; I thought he was joking.
But he wasn't, he started a poultry farm immediately after we finished our service. Guess what? Ola is doing very well. He digitized his poultry farming business, and he has become one of the biggest poultry farmers in his state.
You can be Ola! Start something little today; someone may use your success story as a testimony tomorrow.
Market Your Products Directly to Hotels and Restaurants
Don't wait for people to come to you. Create a market and separate yourself from the crowd. It's easy. Identify major hotels, fast foods, and restaurants close to you, and offer to supply them chicken.
Advertise Your Products
You can also market your poultry products by advertising them. Contact popular influencers on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. They will charge you, but the result will be worth it.
Employ a MarketerIf your poultry business is already doing well, try to employ a marketer to carry out aggressive marketing.  While you focus on the operational aspect of the business, the marketer will help you bring sales.
How Much Does It Cost to Start a Poultry Farm in Nigeria?
Starting a poultry farm in Nigeria is relatively cheap. It doesn't require much capital. With as low as N50,000, you can start up something. This includes the cost of setting up a shelter for your birds as well as buying a day old chick.
Interestingly, if you manage your poultry farm properly, you can get a 100% return from your capital. But you need to be consistent with nurturing your birds. Give them attention and shelter them in a neat environment.
Layers vs Broilers, Which is More Profitable?
Beginners to poultry farming always want to know between layers and broilers, which is more profitable. Even though they already get the answer to the question "is poultry farming a profitable business", they still want to know which birds would be better for them.
Broilers and layers are two types of poultry birds. They are reared for meat production. These birds grow very fast because of their strong genes. Within a few weeks, you can start selling your broiler birds.
Layer birds, on the other hand, are reared for commercial egg production. Although they don't grow fast like broilers, they have genes that enable them to lay more eggs.
The question now is between layer and broiler poultry farming, which is more profitable? Well, the answer to this question depends on certain factors which include;
Startup Costs
Generally, it's cost more to start up a layer of poultry farming in Nigeria compared to broilers. Unlike layers, within seven weeks, you can start selling your broilers and make your profit.
Marketing
It's generally easier to market layers than broilers. You can market the eggs your layers produce or store them if there's no market for them. Broilers, on the other hand, aren't easy to market.
Long term Revenue
While broilers only produce meat, layers produce both meat and eggs. After producing eggs in commercial quantity, you can decide to sell your layers for meat buy it here on oglasi.
Generally, both broilers and layers are profitable. But if you aren't looking for a quick turn over on your capital, I think layers are more profitable in the long run.

Battle of New Orleans and the rise of Andrew Jackson
205 years ago today the Battle of New Orleans was fought in the War of 1812.  The battle is probably among the most remembered events in the War of 1812, along with the Burning of Washington DC and the Battles of Baltimore and Lake Erie.  The war itself and its reasons for fighting are largely gone in the public’s memory, even in the participating countries.  However, the war was consequential in some ways and this battle though fought after the peace treaty was signed and before news of its signing reached American shores would be consequential not in a military sense but a psychological one.
When one thinks of the War of 1812, most in the world might think of that year as being exclusively about Napoleon Bonaparte’s Invasion of Russia and the Patriotic War fought there which turned the tide of the Napoleonic Wars, but related to those wars and namely due to Britain and France’s rivalry was the War of 1812 fought in North America between the United States and Great Britain.  It was the second and final bloody war fought between the two nations.
The war resulted as part of unresolved issues from the American Revolutionary War which ended in 1783 and granted the US all the territory east of the Mississippi River and south of the St. Lawrence River and Great Lakes, with common shared usage of all these waterways.  The issues were in part the refusal of the British to abandon all their forts in these areas, namely in the current upper Midwest of the United States, then known as US Northwestern Territory and later the Indiana and Illinois Territories.  The modern states of Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois and Wisconsin were the very threshold of the American wilderness and not widely settled aside from the fur trade and Native American tribes.  This lead to another issue, Native American tribes in this territory had taken issue with increasing American settlement.  1785-1795 saw a ten year war between the US and a confederacy of various tribes in this area, called the Western or Miami Confederacy, which the Americans defeated after the Battle of Fallen Timbers.  Increasing tensions between the Native tribes and a new confederacy formed under a Shawnee named Tecumseh (1768-1813) against American settlement and being armed by the British who sought to create a Native American controlled buffer state between its Canadian colonies and the US was another source of tension.
The final issue and most pressing was that of impressment, the act of taking sailors from a foreign nation and forcing them to serve in another against their will.  America had remained neutral during the French Revolutionary Wars and subsequent Napoleonic Wars but the British Royal Navy being the world’s most powerful was largely making it harder and harder for America to remain neutral.  It sought to disrupt American trade with France and it also sought to shore up its manpower shortages in naval service.  To do this it began the act of impressment by stopping American merchant and naval vessels and seizing sailors and forcing them into British naval service.  At first it was done on the grounds that some British sailors had ran away into American service and therefore they were collecting them back.  The reality became by 1807 though, namely the famed Chesapeake Affair that American sailors themselves were also being taken against their will.  Thomas Jefferson had the  Embargo Act of 1807 passed in an effort to prevent trade with both France and Britain by removing crucial American markets and hit their economies to the point they would stop.  America saw impressment as a violation of a neutral nation’s rights and national dishonor.  The act only hurt American trading interests instead and was repealed 15 months later.
By June 1812, these combination of events lead to the declaration of war by the United States under President James Madison against Britain which was locked in the Peninsular War in Spain against Napoleonic France at the time.  The war really caught both sides unprepared and what followed were two and a half years of blundered offensives by both sides and mostly successful defenses as well.  America still used a state militia system to supplement it’s small regular army which gave it numerical superiority to the British regular army in Canada.  However, the British navy effected a blockade of the American Atlantic Coast which hurt shipping and trade.  However, despite America’s numerical superiority and Britain’s best troops being in Spain, the US leadership was incompetent in many ways and the militias often only followed state loyalty rather than national and this over and over bungled American plans to overtake Canada.  The British to make up for a lack of regular support had Canadian militia and Native American tribes serve as auxiliary forces which fought with great success in several early campaigns.  By 1813 however, America fought back in some notable ways.  The Americans retook Fort Detroit in Michigan after its capture and notably defeated the Royal Navy in the Battle of Lake Erie.  Interestingly the US won many single ship duels against the Royal Navy all throughout the war which somewhat tarnished the Royal Navy’s reputation and confounded the British, giving America sorely needed bright spots for its failed offensives into Canada.  The Americans then killed Tecumseh at the Battle of the Thames ending his confederacy and British support for an Native American buffer state.  To top it off, America burned York (Toronto) the capital of the British colony of Upper Canada destroying its parliamentary buildings and taking the Speaker’s mace, which America kept as a war trophy until 1934 when President Franklin Roosevelt gave it back as a goodwill gesture.
1814 was intended to be the year of British revenge.  In spring 1814, Britain had finished the Peninsular War with the defeat and first abdication of Napoleon in France and his exile to Elba.  New and experienced troops were transferred to North America.  Three British offensives were planned to end the war in their favor.  The first was the August 1814 invasion of Washington DC and Maryland.  The British entered Washington DC and in revenge for the burning of York, Upper Canada by America the year before, they burnt the abandoned US Capitol building after holding a mock legislative session, they also burnt the abandoned White House after holding dinner there along with other government buildings.  The US government however had evacuated ahead of time to evade capture, so the act of burning Washington was less a strategic win and more of a symbolic revenge.  A hurricane hit right after the burning and its rains put out the fires.  The British then attacked Baltimore, Maryland hoping to destroy the important American commercial center and its naval facilities but were defeated and from this battle, America’s national anthem the Star Spangled Banner came, written by witness, Francis Scott Key.  The second offensive, was the Battle of Lake Champlain fought in upstate New York and Vermont.  Its goal was to weaken American naval power on the lake and the St. Lawrence River and to cutoff public support for the war in New England from the rest of the US (New England was against the war in many ways due to their lucrative trade with Britain being hurt).  A combined land and naval battle took place in September 1814 at Plattsburgh, New York.  The Americans were like at Baltimore triumphant and the British repulsed.  The third and final planned offensive was to take place in the American South, by taking its major commercial center at New Orleans, Louisiana.
As the plans for New Orleans to be attacked were being made in autumn 1814 and the British and Americans were diplomatically trying to find a resolution to the war’s end in a neutral location.  The chose the city of Ghent, then in the Kingdom of the Netherlands and now modern Belgium.  Even as negotiations for peace were under way, the British Secretary of War, Henry Bathurst instructed Major General Edward Pakenham to lead the attack.  Pakenham was a veteran of the Peninsular War and brother in law of General Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington and soon to be hero of Waterloo.  Bathurst was concerned the Americans would not ratify any peace deal and so he thought an attack and occupation of New Orleans might strengthen the British position to end the war in terms favorable to them.  The attack was planned for late December 1814 or early 1815.  As it turned out the British and American delegations lead by Lord Gambier and future US President John Quincy Adams respectively signed a peace treaty on Christmas Eve 1814, the treaty essentially restored the status quo before the war.  Neither side would gain new territory or lose any territory, a true military and political stalemate.  Though unarguably, the British allied Native American tribes lost the war militarily and politically when British support for them having their own state dropped and the British abandoned all held forts captured during the war and held prior to the war in American territory.  American settlement and military encroachment on these lands would be overwhelming and irreversible to the Native tribes in the coming years.  With the Treaty of Ghent signed, it now awaited ratification in Britain’s Parliament and America’s Congress.  News being what it was in those days traveled by ship and would take weeks to reach American shores.  Pakenham’s attack on New Orleans would commence even though the war was technically over unbeknownst to him or his troops.  In New Orleans they would run into the man in charge of its defense and a man with personal vendetta against Britain, Brevet Major General Andrew Jackson.
Andrew Jackson (1767-1845) was born the son of Scots-Irish immigrants from Ulster, Ireland in the Carolinas prior to the American Revolution.  His father died shortly before his birth and during the American Revolution he served as a courier for the American Patriot army along with his brother.  However, a few events during the Revolution would shape his life ever after.  He first lost his brother Hugh to heat exhaustion in the wake of British victory, then Jackson and his brother Robert were taken prisoner by the British in 1781 and famously was ordered by a British officer to clean their muddied boots, Jackson refused and was slashed at with a sword by the officer, it left scars on his arms and face the rest of his life.  Their mother however secured their release and on the return journey home, nearly starved to death when Robert contracted small pox and died.  Then his mother volunteering as a nurse for American prisoners in British custody in Charleston, South Carolina contracted the same disease and died herself.  Andrew Jackson was complete orphan by the age of 14.  He always blamed the British for the loss of his family and his personal wounds and near death experiences.  Jackson was man to hold grudges all his life.  Overtime, Jackson became a self-made lawyer, landholder and businessman of some success, moving to Tennessee.  There he became a member of US Congress briefly and became a wealthy slave plantation owner and earned a reputation a a tough man, fighting in a duel when his wife’s honor was insulted, he killed his opponent and suffered a bullet lodged in his chest near his heart the rest of his life, never to be removed.  He also was elected to the lead the Tennessee militia and during the War of 1812 fought in the Southern Theater against the British allied Creek tribe in the Creek War.  This war ended in American victory which destroyed Creek resistance in the Southeastern US.  This gained Jackson some level of fame, but he was made ultimately given the responsibility of defending New Orleans against any impending British attack and rushed to its defense following a brief occupation of Pensacola Florida, then a Spanish colony.  He earned the nickname, Old Hickory from these campaigns, his men named him this affectionately for his fierce temper and personal toughness, tough like hickory wood
In December 1814, Pakenham’s force landed in Louisiana supported by the Royal Navy squadron of the Gulf of Mexico under the command Admiral Alexander Cochrane.  Jackson as acting military governor of New Orleans, placed the city under martial law.  He then began planning its defense and organizing his army.  In late December he heard that British troops had landed, in anger he launched a night attack against their camp, declaring “By the eternal, they shall not spend a night on our soil!”  The night attack didn’t dislodge the British but it inflicted casualties and made them realize what they initially thought would be an easy conquest would be more difficult.  Jackson fell back the city and the British continued their gradual approach which was hampered by the swampy conditions of Louisiana.  Jackson’s new plan was to build a so called Line Jackson, an entrenched position of earthworks, redoubts and parapets four miles south of the city manned by infantry and artillery which would defend the city it stretched from banks of the Mississippi River into a swamp on plantation field, the idea was to block the British and prevent being flanked or outmaneuvered by the river or swamp as natural defenses.  he also placed artillery on high ground opposite side of the river to further defend the line..  Then he had a second line prepared as well.  His army totaled 5,700 men at most.  It was a true American mix of 968 US Army, Marine and Navy regulars from all over the country but mostly consisted of southern militia volunteers from Louisiana and Tennessee primarily but also including Mississippi and Kentucky contingents.  It also included freed and enslaved black Americans, Choctaw Native Americans and even pirate smugglers under French pirate Jean Lafitte who helped man the artillery with great skill.  The army spoke a mix of English, French, Spanish, Choctaw and Louisiana Creole.
The British army would number 8,000 land troops giving them numerical superiority  The composition of the British army was diverse too though it mostly consisted of British regulars including Scottish Highlanders but had some all black regiments from the British Caribbean or West Indies as it was known then and a small set of support from Native American allies too.  Pakenham’s plan was to first have a set of troops cross the river and overtake the American cannons guarding any approach on the river’s west bank.  Those guns would then be swiveled to the east to fire upon Line Jackson and flank the Americans with an enfilade.  Meanwhile, Pakenham somewhat forced by geography due to the swampy terrain on the British right flank would have to use his superior numbers and the flanking enfilade from their left to overwhelm the American lines.  He thought this possible in part because of the discipline and experience of his troops and the low regard for American troops, especially militias that made up Line Jackson’s defense.
The Battle of New Orleans began on early morning January 8, 1815 in darkness and under heavy fog.  Pakenham’s flanking detachment of the 85th Regiment of Foot and Royal Marines under Colonel William Thornton crossed the river and attacked the flank of the American artillery guarding the west bank, successfully they captured the guns despite casualties and logistical difficulties due to bad terrain.  Thornton himself was wounded and this was to be the only British success of the day though it proved inconsequential to what transpired over the next half hour.  There is debate about whether the Americans spiked the guns rendering them useless of it the British actually carried out an ineffective enfilade.  Meanwhile as the fog lifted on the field of battle, the main British force was subject to American artillery and small arms fire.  It quickly laid waste to the British caught out in the open field.  Some British troops reached the 8 foot deep and 15 feet wide canal dug in front of Line Jackson’s earthworks, they were pinned down and the 44th Regiment of Foot tasked with supplying ladders needed to scale the canal and earthworks simply forgot them, this would later land its commander Lt. Colonel Thomas Mullins a court marital for negligence.  As a result the British advance was grinding to a halt in front of Line Jackson, some stayed pinned in place and fought where they could but the 93rd Highlanders Regiment was ordered to attack the furthest redoubt on the American right flank on the banks of the river.  The Highlanders initially took the redoubt but couldn’t hold it without support, all the men on the redoubt were killed, wounded or captured once the American 7th Us Infantry Regiment arrived to retake it.  There were cases of the British simply scaling the earthworks by hand in groups but they too were mowed down by musket fire and grapeshot from the American cannons at close range or they were grabbed and disarmed by the Americans and taken prisoner.  Pakenham and his second in command General Samuel Gibbs were both fatally wounded by American grapeshot.  In Pakenham’s case he was injured in the left knee first which killed his horse as well.  As he was being helped up to a second horse near the front of the line, he was hit a second time in the right arm and finally a third whiff of grapeshot penetrated his spine, killing him as he finally mounted his second horse, Pakenham and Gibbs deaths lead to confusion on the British side, no orders on how to continue to advance in the face of withering American fire and no commands to retreat, many were killed or wounded outright and others are recorded by some sources as simply playing dead to distract from enemy fire.  Finally, General John Lambert in command of the British reserve realized command fell to him ordered a retreat with the reserve called up to cover the British retreat.  Thornton’s detachment on the west bank of the river withdrew from their flanking position unable to change the tide of the battle.
The battle was over in roughly a half hour though there is some debate on the American casualties, they were comparatively light with most sources saying 55 dead and 185 wounded though Jackson claimed only 13 Americans died.  The British on the other hand suffered 386 dead, 1,521 wounded and 552 captured or missing in action.  The British lost their two top commanders in the field and numerous other officers as well.  The British would withdraw from Louisiana and would fail to take another American fort before successfully capturing Fort Bowyer near Mobile, Alabama in February 1815.  Upon which they planned to attack the city proper when news of the Treaty of Ghent ending the war in stalemate finally arrived, they withdrew.  New Orleans was for the British an abject failure, made all the more gutting now knowing the war was over.
For the Americans, New Orleans had a galvanizing effect on their psyche, the news of the victory at New Orleans reached many Americans before news of Ghent’s peace treaty did giving the false impression to some that Jackson’s victory contributed to the peace signing.  It helped usher in the so called “Era of Good Feelings” where Americans felt a sense of camaraderie and claimed the War of 1812 had been a victory even though it was a practical stalemate.  Americans had achieved at New Orleans a victory in their “Second War of Independence” against Britain.  In the coming decade mostly under President James Monroe, there would be little internal strife and relative economic prosperity which granted name the “Era of Good Feelings”.  Also the War of 1812 ended the Federalist party, leaving only the Democratic-Republicans in control as a one party system and ending the so called First Party System in American politics.  Britain and America would never go to war despite some occasional scares up through the American Civil War again and go on to become very close allies during the 20th and into the 21st centuries.
For Andrew Jackson, New Orleans changed everything, he was the national hero of the war and a household name ever after.  His popularity was such that he would become senator for Tennessee and then campaign for President in 1824 in a contentious election against then Secretary of State John Quincy Adams, the campaign lead to political mudslinging and eventually due to a lack of majority in the Electoral College for any candidate, a vote was held in the US House of Representatives leading to Adams winning the Presidency.  Jackson returned home and networked until the next election, he would win the equally contentious 1828 election decisively against Adams and serve two full terms as President of United States (1829-1837) in very consequential fashion, establishing the modern day Democratic Party and influencing Democrat-Republicans opposed to him to become the Whig Party forming the Second Party System.  The era of good feelings started by Jackson would end with Jackson, the Jacksonian Era had begun...

“Why are you freaking out now?” Seokjin asks, and the seconds tick by and suddenly the atmosphere shifts. “Ahh, I get it.”
Yoongi perks up, swivels, spots Taehyung stepping from the hall into the room and he’s in fitted slacks and the baby blue button-up from earlier and he looks divine.
Yoongi’s heart just stopped and he’s not sure how to get it beating again. Namjoon’s a doctor. A doctor in training, but some form of medical professional regardless. Namjoon knows CPR and cardiac arrest symptoms and all that shit. He’ll know Yoongi’s dying.
“Perfect timing. Let’s eat.”
Or he’s going to wink at Yoongi and send suggestive eyebrow raises the whole night. Great. Fabulous.
(Or: Yoongi loves Taehyung and Taehyung loves Yoongi and somewhere along the way they figure that out.)

“Do you stare at the sky in the middle of roads at night often?” he asks.
Yoongi shrugs. “Do you join random people staring at the sky in the middle of roads at night often?” He glances at the guy and his heart slams in his chest at the wide smile he sees.
“I’m Taehyung. Everyone calls me Tae though.”
Yoongi nods slowly, “Yoongi.”
Tae seems to repeat the name to himself, carefully remembering how it feels in his mouth. Yoongi can’t look away. “Yoongi? Do you want to get out of the middle of the road and get hot cocoa?”

“Min who?”
Jimin waves his hand dismissively. “The rock star you couldn’t care less about but whose face you have to stare at through your camera lens tonight.”
Taehyung slings his camera bag on his shoulder and shoves the press pass into his back pocket. “Sure, whatever. Just point me in his direction when we get there.”

Desperate times call for desperate measures, and Taehyung is not above taking a soul-killing office job solely for the benefits. The drab cubicle he now calls home is bad enough, but his new boss Yoongi is possibly a robot and definitely an asshole.
