Living in Calgary
I've been living in Calgary for 2 years already, and I think it's time to recap few things about living here, pros/cons and possible remedies to the issues you might face here.
Please note that life now is different compared with what you could have even 10 years ago. I guess both Vancouver and Calgary (as those are the only cities I've lived in long enough) were nice for newcomers (by newcomers I've meant people who just moved there and didn't have a lot of money to settle in). Right now, both cities have changed and introduced more obstructions to residents.
That's why despite a lot of cons of Calgary below, it doesn't mean that this city shouldn't be considered for living. It's all about tolerance and life choices. If you have proper expectations, it will be easier to adapt. There are definitely people who love Calgary (esp. if they are mortgage-free and/or love winter activities), and who hate it (e.g. who got their houses ruined by hail or flood).
I'm not going to provide a simple list of pros/cons (as cons for me could be pros for you, for example, long winter season), but rather take the most important areas and describe them.
Services
Calgary is definitely a family-friendly city, much more friendlier than Vancouver. Schools and kindergartens are not so busy and expensive. If you want some particular school, you still need to be in the wait-list though, but if you’re not picky, there are definitely some options available. All levels of education, including universities, are presented.
It’s not a problem to get the family doctor too. Walk-in clinics are not so busy too, and emergency wait times are bearable.
Entertainment options are quite good: museums, libraries, one of biggest YMCA in Canada, Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Alberta Ballet, Calgary Zoo etc
However, I have to note the prices of the dental services. Alberta has the highest prices for dental. Historically, oil and gas companies provided full dental coverage and didn’t care much about prices. It’s all changed, but the prices are still high. I hope it’s going to change, but right now please be careful about it.
Transportation
I can’t say much about public transit, I guess it's ok-ish in downtown and not so good in the outskirts, but that's applicable for all cities in general. For reference, in 2020 the single fare for adults is $3.50 for 90 minutes (there are no zones in Calgary). There is CTrain too (light rail transit), but it's not as extensive as in Vancouver. There are some plans to improve it (e.g. add Green Line), but it has been delayed many times already, and it's difficult to predict when they will finish it.
Calgary is a private car city - it has 2 major highways (100 km/h limit) through the city, plus there some long streets and avenues which could be considered minor highways (the speed limit up to 80 km/h). Essentially, you can get to any location in Calgary in 30 minutes on average. I guess the only real traffic jams I’ve seen was during Stampede, and it’s just a week in a year. In general, it’s a real pleasure to drive here, especially if you leave Calgary core and takes any of the scenic routes it has on the outskirts and further in the numerous parks.
Despite that there are few obstacles for being a happy driver here:
a lot of speed cameras. Speed tickets are a source of income for the city, and sometimes they abuse it. Radars are legal, including hidden mobile radars, and the abuses include sudden speed sign changes and school zones limits which disregard the school days, and enforced from 7am to 9pm everyday including weekends and holidays.
gravel on the road. They use sharp-edged gravel in the winter, and considering speeds on highways and lots of semi, you may forget about having a nice non-cracked windshield and sunroof (I've got huge cracks on both). Glass insurance is not included in the basic packages, and should be bought separately.
a note about insurance. It's not cheaper than ICBC, it's actually more expensive and has more restrictions (at least for immigrants).
a lot of construction. Mostly closer to downtown, but major highways are affected too. Fortunately, there are not many two-lane highways like in BC (mostly 4 or 6 lanes), so the delays are not so huge, but could easily take 20-30 minutes.
My recommendations: don’t buy luxury cars (not only winter tires and windshields are expensive, it’s difficult to maintain the low speed), get glass insurance ASAP, use apps like Waze to check the road condition ahead.
Climate
Calgary has more sun than Vancouver, however I can't say it's a sunny city (I guess Canada just in general doesn't have a lot of sun). Moreover, the sun doesn't matter so much as it doesn't mean that the city is getting a lot of its heat - it has snow for at least 6 months a year (first snow could fall in Sep, but usually it doesn’t stay for long, and the last snow is melted in Apr/May).
Sun is very bright (due to altitude), and the humidity is low. Nice green grass requires either irrigation or rainy days. There is no dedicated line for irrigation, so you would need to use the “drinking” water, and a lot of it.
A note about “drinking” water - its quality definitely worse than in Vancouver (it's quite hard and has other chemicals). While they allow us to drink it from the tap, we don't risk it, plus we don't like having stains on every glass surface we have in the house. Fortunately, it's possible to avoid it with softener (plus we have a reverse osmosis system for actual drinking). It’s not cheap though, but it’s a long term investment that could be worth thinking about (we’ve installed the systems from https://www.jugfree.com/ and they have prices there for reference).
Short summers don't always bring warmth and sun only, but also heavy rains, hail and tornado. Hail damages houses and cars, and the last storm in Calgary (June 2020) has the estimation in damages nearly $1 billion: https://calgaryherald.com/news/local-news/cost-of-damage-from-weekend-storm-could-total-1-billion-nenshi
Winter is not so harsh though due to Chinook. Visually it looks like huge dark clouds cover the city and the temperature is rising. Even without it, the winter is mild enough, but it's not always good. As the day/night temperature could differ in 20C, the ice (usual or black) is the real issue here, and winter tires are strongly recommended.
My recommendations: South Calgary has a better climate and usually hail is not so bad here (we live in South East). It’s better to avoid the north (besides that, North East has a high crime rate).
Real Estate
The houses are cheaper in Vancouver, definitely. Medium income families can afford decent living conditions here. Surely, nothing fancy, the same overpriced wood frame houses as in North America overall, as the construction lobby is very strong here, and having sound-proof, properly thermal insulated houses, preferably from bricks, is a luxury.
Please note though that the taxes are increasing. As Calgary (and Alberta overall) in a financial crisis (they put in motion a lot of expensive projects when the oil/gas industry boomed, and still couldn’t recover after its collapse), so they burden their problems on residents.
Also, they have tons of other cash grabs there (carbon tax, some administrative fees nobody can explain), so the utilities are not cheap either. Insurance is also one of the highest in Canada (the official excuse is they are losing money because of hail storms and other disasters).
My recommendations: Towns near Calgary could be worth researching (like Okotoks or Chestermere). Surely, there are some disadvantages living there (for example, I’m literally 5 minutes drive from both major highways, so don’t have to deal with the slow traffic), but it’s definitely cheaper. https://www.realtor.ca/ is a Canada-wide database, you can look up the property ahead.
Geography
Calgary has quite a good location if you like nature. It has the unique position to provide access to several big natural areas at once, so if you have bad weather in one region, you can drive to the opposite direction and still find something nice. Please note that Calgary has the international airport with the decent choice of direct flights too.
On the west:
Banff National Park. It's a two hour drive (depending on traffic jams, usually they have some esp. on weekends). Please note that you don’t necessarily need to visit Banff and the park, and can find nice places near Canmore and Kananaskis (K-country).
East K-country, has several provincial parks. More accessible, shorter (1+ hour) drive (not necessary Hwy 1, but also Hwy 22), almost no traffic jams. A lot of ATV options, lakes and mountain hikes.
On the east:
Badlands. Surely, the most famous is Drumheller region (1.5+ hour drive), but they have much more than that as the badlands are presented in many places in Southeast Alberta, like Dinosaur Provincial Park (2h drive).
A lot of lakes with kayaking, fishing and jet skis options. The examples are Lake McGregor (a little over an hour drive) and Lake Newell (2 hours drive).
On the south:
Waterton Lakes National Park, 2.5 hours drive, a lot of activities there, but due to recent forest fires not everything is open.
US border (the traffic is much lighter compared with Vancouver, almost no waits). The prominent examples are Glacier National Park, Montana (3 hours drive) and Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming (10 hours drive).
On the north:
Shortcut to Jasper. While driving through Banff in theory faster (5 hours), in reality due to constructions, traffic jams and two-lane Icefield Parkway it could be faster to drive through Rocky Mountain House (6 hours).
There are a lot of parks there too, we just never got a chance to explore them yet. I guess Big Hill Springs Provincial Park could be an example of those (1 hour drive).
Shopping
It’s easier to shop here due to easy commuting and close availability of the big stores: Costco, Walmart, Superstore, Save-on-Foods, Home Depot, Lowes etc. Definitely, there are big malls (i.e. Chinook Center, CF Market Mall), outlets (i.e. CrossIron Mills) and big specialized stores (i.e. Cabela’s) too.
Diversity is not so good though - mostly North America merchandise. We found only one decent store for Asian products: T&T Supermarket. There are some small Asian stores too (mostly in the North), but they usually don’t have anything extra special compared with T&T.
Seafood options are not so great too (both in restaurants and in stores). Oysters and lobsters are quite uncommon for Calgary. I guess T&T has the best selection, but still less than in Vancouver.

Disaster donations' dual payoff: Hurricane Laura & other disaster help now, donor tax break later
Hurricane Laura made landfall at Cameron, Louisiana, at 1 a.m. today, Aug. 27, as a Category 4 storm, with winds of 150 mph. Three persons lost their lives. Property damage is still being assessed.
Now Louisiana residents, who were the hardest hit by the area's strongest storm in more than a century and which at mid-morning, more than 100 miles inland, was still a Category 1, must deal with the aftermath.
We're still getting reports on the damage. The one bit of good news is that the expected storm surge, if it materialized, looks to have been in a largely unpopulated areas of southeastern Louisiana.
Still, Laura did her fair share of damage, as reports from Lake Charles show. The community of 78,000 or so is about 50 miles north of Cameron and took a beating. Of particular concern is the chemical plant that was on fire today.
BREAKING: Large Chemical leak from a plant in Lake Charles flowing over I-10, extremely dangerous situation. #hurricanelaura pic.twitter.com/61GA37NR1v

Tax help later, recovery help now: This is a tax blog, so at some point relatively soon I'll post about how the Internal Revenue Service and tax code can help.
Right now, though, taxes are the last thing on the minds of Pelican State and, to a lesser degree, Texas residents who got some of Laura's wind and rain. They just want to make sure their loved ones are OK and find out if they have a home to which they can return.
If you want to help, there are plenty of ways to do so. The fastest, easiest and most recommended way is to donate money to reputable groups who are equipped to provide disaster recovery services.
The two charity giants, the American Red Cross and The Salvation Army, are taking donations.
To donate by phone, call toll-free the Red Cross at (800) RED-CROSS or 733-2767 or the Salvation Army at (800) SAL-ARMY or 725-2769. The Red Cross also accepts text donations; text the word LAURA to 90999 to make a $10 donation.
Charity Navigator has compiled a list of 12 charities its analysts say do good jobs of providing relief and support to Hurricane Laura (and Tropical Storm Marco) affected areas. They include the Red Cross, as well as
Operation USA,
Center for Disaster Philanthropy,
Good360,
SBP,
Heart to Heart International,
Matthew 25: Ministries,
Americares,
GlobalGiving,
All Hands and Hearts Smart Response,
Family Promise and
Direct Relief.
Chef José Andrés' World Central Kitchen already has volunteers and staffers in Southeast Texas and Southwest Louisiana, ready to feed people in need after Hurricane Laura. You make an online donation at the nonprofit's web page.

Animal care, too: Pets also are traumatized by disasters, especially if their families are unable to care for them or they become accidentally separated.
If you want to help the animal victims of Hurricane Laura, consider giving to Austin Pets Alive!, a nonprofit shelter and rescue group currently caring for more than 70 cats and dogs that were in the storm's path. The shelter's urgent needs include laundry detergent, dry cat food, pet carriers, pee pads, leashes and latex gloves.
You can apply to be a foster parent, as well. And, of course, the shelter accepts monetary donations.
Golden State aflame: While the aftermath of Hurricane Laura naturally is getting most attention today, we can't forget about disasters that hit before the Gulf Coast storm.
California is in the midst of some historically terrible wildfires. The California Community Foundation (CFC) has established a Wildfire Relief Fund. You can donate at that web page to provide financial help for the group's recover efforts.
Photo: US Department of Agriculture/US Forest Service
Also check out CCF's separate pages for ways to support specific geographic assistance efforts. They are list on the Wildfire Relief Resource Pages for Southern California and Northern California.
Charity Navigator also put together a list of nonprofits that are helping Californians as they deal with the wildfires. is tragic situation. Some overlap the Laura charities. Others, like the aforementioned CCF and the California Fire Foundation are specific to that Pacific Coast state.
American Red Cross and Salvation Army workers also are on the ground in the fire-ravaged areas. So is World Central Kitchen, with feeding efforts in Northern California.
Don't forget derecho donations: Folks in Iowa also are still trying to get their lives and businesses back together after the unexpected and devastating derecho that this that state earlier this month.
Table to Table, an Iowa City organization that redistributes food that might otherwise go to waste, is assisting in efforts in Cedar Rapids by delivering food to those in need.
The Hawkeye Area Community Action Program (HACAP) is a local nonprofit organization, United Way Partner Agency and member of Feeding America. HACAP, which serves six counties in Iowa, has a list of places where those who need it can get access to food, shelter or charging stations. You can donate online to support those services.
Horizons, a local organization in Cedar Rapids, is delivering food to families in need through its Meals on Wheels program.
Feed Iowa First, which serves Linn County, is accepting donations and seeking volunteers to keep its services running. The organization operates urban farms across the county and distributes produce to communities using mobile veggie vans. People are allowed to take as much as they want, no questions asked.
The Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation created a disaster recovery fund. Again, you can donate online at that web page.
The Iowa Derecho Storm Resource Facebook page offers a clearinghouse of services and the people and communities who need them.
And, one more time, the Red Cross and Salvation Army are in Iowa, along with, you got it, World Central Kitchen, feeding folks in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Finally, since I've relied on Charity Navigator it's only right that I put in a plug for that group. It also is a 501(c)(3), meaning that in order to keep vetting of other nonprofits and curating lists like those for the recent catastrophes, it depends on generosity. If you have a few more dollars to spare, consider giving to Charity Navigator, too.
Check out charities: Speaking of Charity Navigator's examinations of nonprofits, that's something that every potential charity donor should do, too.
Research charities that are soliciting donations for any disaster relief area. Charity Navigator, GuideStar and the IRS' e IRS' Exempt Organizations Select Check to make sure the charity is OK.
Be skeptical of ones making unsolicited phone calls or sending emails. They could be scams. Hurricane Laura relief efforts. It’s common for scammers to exploit people’s charitable nature during a disaster.
More donation deduction options: Such checking is the first step if you want to claim the charitable donation on your taxes. Your charitable gift must be to a legitimate, IRS-qualified nonprofit.
In most cases, such charitable gifts are made by taxpayers who itemize. Those donations are claimed on Schedule A of their annual tax return.
But this year, the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act expanded the donation deduction to those taxpayers who claim the standard deduction. On you 2020 taxes you'll file next year, you now can claim up to $300 in monetary gifts you make to qualified charitable organizations.
Basically, this is an addition to what used to be known as above-the-line deductions that are shown as adjustments to income on Form 1040's Schedule 1. These amounts reduce your total income to a lower adjusted gross income that, in most cases, means a smaller tax bill.
If you are able and want to donate more, great. You can and claim those amounts, too. You'll just need to itemize.
Regardless of which donation deduction you qualify for, take it. I know it's not why you give, but you also shouldn't ignore the tax thanks for doing so.

Puerto Rico Golf Returns To Full Strength
On the seven-minute drive from the clubhouse to the first tee of the memorable East Course at TPC Dorado Beach in Puerto Rico, you pass through a meticulously landscaped garden of tropical plants, by the $1,500-a-night AAA five diamond Ritz-Carlton Reserve (one of three in the world) and under the oddity of a 10-foot long two-inch-by-six-inch piece of lumber driven through the trunk of a palm tree like an arrow might be shot through an apple.
The board could easily be cut down, but it is left there as a reminder of the wrath of Mother Nature and just how ferocious she can be when she gets her dander up like she did two years ago, when Hurricane Maria ripped across the island packing 200 mph wind gusts capable of lodging a board in a tree trunk. There’s no telling from how far away Maria might have carried that piece of wood to its violent end, but what is clear is the distance Puerto Rico has come since Maria, and it is remarkable.
A lot of lives were disrupted, and many native Puerto Ricans were forced to move to the U.S. Life still isn’t completely back to normal in some of the small southeastern Puerto Rican towns where Maria came ashore. Even in the island’s economic center of San Juan there are still buildings boarded up and plenty of reminders of Maria’s destruction. But Puerto Rico today is a study in the resiliency of human nature.
“It’s a high five to humanity when you can get through something like that, something that is so far away from the norm and what you are used to,” says Eric Krahn, golf course superintendent at Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Golf & Beach resort.
TPC Dorado Beach brings the best of Robert Trent Jones II to Puerto Rico
Despite questionable support from the federal government, some sectors of Puerto Rico’s economy — the tourism industry for one — have bounced back better and stronger. Much of the tourism industry actually used the storm as a reset button, adding capital investment to insurance dollars and rebuilding bigger and better to make the island more attractive as a tropical getaway.
So for mainlanders, arriving in Puerto Rico is that exotic tropical island vacation, different enough to think you need a passport, but no customs clearance required. There is an easiness about traveling here. Many major East Coast markets offer direct flights, and when you get here, there is the familiarity of home but the distinct feeling of not being in Kansas anymore.
You can get a Budweiser, but you’ll probably want to try Madella. You’ll hear natives call it the peso, but they are talking about the U.S. dollar, which is the official currency and spends everywhere without having to calculate an exchange rate. Your cell phone works here without an international plan. And Spanish may be more widely spoken, but English is the co-official language and spoken almost everywhere.
Rio Mar is a Puerto Rico classic
Following Maria, the island has rebuilt its identity, clearly with an eye on its heritage but thinking about its future. A new marketing strategy moves away from emphasis largely on beaches and the San Juan metropolitan area toward a broader focus on the island’s many tourist offerings, among them golf.
It is true, some courses didn’t reopen after Maria, leaving the island with 17. So if Puerto Rico were to become a state, it would rank dead last in number of golf courses (Alaska has 24) despite its golf-friendly tropical climate. In terms of quality, however, it would be hard to argue that Puerto Rico would not be near the top. Way upscale resorts like Dorado Beach, Coco Beach, Bahia Beach Resort (photo at left) and the Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Golf & Beach Resort near San Juan, and Royal Isabella on the west side of the island, measure up nicely with golf resorts around the world.
Most of the island’s resorts include private club components that are rapidly growing thanks to Act 22, a tax law designed to attract high net-worth residents by providing exemption from Puerto Rico income taxes on all interest and dividends.
Jeff Willenberg, director of golf at the resort community of Dorado Beach, where entry-level real estate carries a price tag of about $1.5 million, says Act 22 had spurred development and membership at the resort community. But then came Maria.
“Immediately after the storm everyone was in shock and wondered what the future might bring. We knew Dorado would overcome this, but the big question was would the new growth leading up to the hurricane evaporate as people would be hesitant to move to Puerto Rico from the damage to the island.”
Coco Beach: Classic island golf in Puerto Rico
By early 2018 those worries evaporated, the program resumed and people continued to move to the island. At TPC Dorado Beach membership grew by 85 in 2018.
Two of the Dorado courses — the West and Pineapple — didn’t reopen after Maria, not entirely from the destruction of the storm. There is so much growth within the community that more room was needed for condominium construction.
Still, that leaves the resort along the Atlantic Ocean 30 miles west of San Juan with 36 holes, including the fabulous East Course, clearly one of the best in the Caribbean. From its ocean-side opening hole the Robert Trent Jones Sr. design recently upgraded by RTJ Jr. darts in and out from the turquoise water and includes a stretch of holes on the back nine that move up into some hills, offering a much different look.
About 30 miles on the other side of the historic city of San Juan (where among the blue cobblestone streets of Old San Juan you can eat at the Barrachina Restaurant, which claims to be the birthplace of the Piña Colada) the Coco Beach Golf Resort has been home to the Puerto Rico Open on the PGA Tour since 2008. The event wasn’t played in 2018 while the island cleaned up after Maria.
The PGA Tour event opposite the World Golf Championships event in Mexico is held on the resort’s Championship Course. A few holes play on a peninsula that juts out into the aqua blue ocean, but unlike many seaside courses, there are no truly memorable individual holes here where you might rinse a shot in the ocean. Instead the Tom Kite design relies on the sum of its 18 parts to add up to a wonderful tropical seaside experience. A second course at Coco Beach, The International, was also designed by Kite. It moves up into hillier terrain and through mangrove-lined swamps.
With a high-end resort on property, Bahia Beach is a popular spot.
A little farther along the north coast of the island in Rio Grande, the Wyndham Rio Mar Golf and Beach Resort is the epitome of oceanside luxury. The beach is a quiet strip of sand where guests can relax with almost no one else in sight at times. The two courses are about as different as can be playing from the same clubhouse on a tropical island.
The Ocean Course teases and taunts with tropical breezes, salty air and the occasionally glimpse of the ridiculously blue ocean, but makes you wait until the 16th hole to play along side it. That turns out to be okay because from the elevated first tee that looks out to the ocean, the holes George and Tom Fazio built leading up to the 16th sit largely by themselves with no intrusion from condos or real estate. Just don’t expect your brief golf visit with the ocean to be pleasurable. Yes, an iguana encounter is possible, but it’s the 238 yards of a windy par 3 that is more likely to spoil your visit.
On the other side of the property, the River Course, designed by Greg Norman, snakes its narrow fairways and small greens through a tropical rainforest-like setting as it plays along the serene Mameyes River, at times offering eye candy views of the mountains of the El Yunque Rainforest.
A neighbor of Coco Beach, the St. Regis Bahia Beach Resort course plays through lush tropical foliage with thick canopies of maritime forest. Natural lagoons meander through the layout like a lazy river, and the omnipresent ocean breeze is as menacing as it is refreshing.
Palmas Athletic Club is a 36-hole complex in Humacao hard on the island’s East Coast. It is home to 18-hole creations from Rees Jones (Flamboyan) and Gary Player’s Palm Course. On the southern coast in Ponce lies the 27-hole Costa Caribe Golf and Country Club. Oceanfront holes, 14 lakes, mountain range views, and an island green ensure players are alternately entertained and engrossed.
On the west side of the 126-mile wide island, choices are fewer — the down-home pleasures of a place like Punta Borinquen Golf Club or the modern luxury of the Links at Royal Isabela, where golf is played on cliffs 200 feet above the ocean. It is there that brothers Charlie and Stanley Pasarell — Puerto Rican natives and former tennis champions, no less — said no thank you to big name designers and in the early 2010s routed the layout themselves on property Charlie’s investment group had purchased years earlier. After tackling their 7,538 yards, you’ll appreciate the pampering of Isabela’s modern luxury resort hotel.
Royal Isabela sits on what may be the most spectacular piece of golf real estate on the island, but it also bore the brunt of Maria, the eye of the storm traveling almost directly over the course as it left. Isabela, like the game itself, persevered. There are stories about the great lengths people went to restore golf on the island — like the one Rio Mar’s Krahn tells about wading through waste-deep water in the days following Maria trying to unclog drains on the River Course. Or the one Dorado Beach’s Willenberg likes to show you in person of the board blown through the trunk of the palm tree.
Maria is just two years in Puerto Rico’s rearview mirror, but judging by the quality of the island’s restored golf economy, she is a distant memory.

Top 10 Lake Towns of 2018: Fantasy Waterfront Retreats at Bargain-Basement Prices
csfotoimages/iStock
What makes a great lake town? A lovely, inspiring, and beckoning body of water? Check. A cool, relaxing vibe with plenty of splashy and nonsplashy extracurriculars? Check. Affordable and irresistible housing a short hop from the water? Yes, please!
When the mercury starts soaring across the U.S., more folks get the urge to turn fantasies of shore living into reality. And why not? Lakefront housing tends to be less expensive and more accessible to a wider swath of the country than popular ocean beach towns. And—without delving into some kind of tortured Stones vs. Beatles, GOP vs. Dems, or ferret vs. capybara lifestyle debate—lake town living offers quite a few perks of its own.
That’s why the data team at realtor.com® set out on its annual quest to find the best lake towns in America. These are the places where there are plenty of well-priced and available homes, property values are rising (so snagging a home will be a good investment), and there are plenty of fun things to do on or around the water. And then we slathered on our sunscreen.
Do you want to live near a picturesque pond, or within striking distance of one of the majestic Great Lakes? The ambiance is dramatically different, and so are the housing prices.
“If you want to be on a larger body of water, you’re typically going to pay more. … You’ll have more fishing opportunities, boating opportunities, and recreational [and dining] opportunities,” says Jim Billig, president of Sportman’s Connection, which produces fishing lake guidebooks in 12 states. “The smaller lakes … are going to be more affordable.”
To figure out the top spots, we looked at home price appreciation from June 2015 to May 2018*, the percentage of vacation homes, the number of food and recreational establishments per capita, the number of outdoor activities per capita, and the number of realtor.com home listings that mention the word “lake” in more than 900 U.S. metropolitan and micropolitan areas. And we limited our selections to one place per state to ensure geographic diversity, and excluded areas where the median home list prices were above $600,000.
Now get ready to make a splash!

For decades this southern Missouri town has steadily built its rep as a Midwestern country music mecca—it touts itself as “the live music show capital of the world.” But, more stealthily, it has also become one of the nation’s leading lake towns.
There are beaches, a full marina, and scuba diving in the 43,000 sparkling acres of Table Rock Lake, one of the area’s main attractions. Lake Taneycomo, a reservoir less than 10 miles from downtown, is considered one of the best trout fishing lakes in the country due to its unusually cool waters. And the oft-overlooked Bull Shoals Lake, about a two-hour drive east of Branson straddling the Missouri-Arkansas border in the Ozark Mountains, offers plenty of cabins, resorts, and RV parks for those who want to stay on the water.
For those who fall in love with the region, there are plenty of affordably priced homes for those who want to stay year-round or just for the season. Many are condos, although there are some waterfront houses ranging from four-bedrooms in the high $200,000s to the occasional mansion selling for a few million dollars.
Most of local real estate agent J.R. Boushehri‘s clients are baby boomers within a 300-mile radius seeking condos with a view they can stay in a few times a month and then rent out the rest of the time. The condos range anywhere from the mid-$50,000s up to $300,000, says Boushehri of Keller Williams Tri-Lake Realty.
“Whatever price range they’re looking for, there’s something out there,” he says.

Once known as home to the Ringling Brothers Circus, this south-central Wisconsin town has a high percentage of homes boasting lake views. It’s no small wonder that John Muir, who grew up just north of the city, turned into one of the 20th century’s most famed naturalists.
While the city’s namesake, the Baraboo River, is the most obvious water attraction, there are plenty of lakes here (locals seldom tire of letting you know that Wisconsin has more of ’em than neighboring Minnesota). Devil’s Lake State Park attracts more than 1 million visitors annually who enjoy activities that range from lounging on glacial sand beaches, to rock climbing for all levels.
It’s also home to the International Crane Foundation, which claims to be the only place on the planet where visitors can see all 15 crane species.
“It’s just a beautiful area,” says Al Doering, owner of Baraboo Canoe & Kayak in nearby North Freedom, WI.
Folks who don’t mind not being directly on the water can find all sorts of bargains. There are standalone cottages, cabins, and even four-bedroom houses for under $225,000 that are just a walk or short drive away from Devil’s Lake.
3. Brainerd, MN

Why settle for one lake when you can have more than 500? That’s right, there are that many lakes located within 25 miles of Brainerd, making it one of the most attractive destinations in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. There are all kinds of waterfront real estate options, and recreational opportunities ranging from canoeing to water skiing, to world-class tubing (BYOB).
If a private lake isn’t Minnesota nice enough for ya, this central Minnesota town has more on its plate than lutefisk. Brainerd is ranked highly for its number of dining establishments, including a few overlooking the water. And there’s a trio of nearby breweries—Gull Dam, Jack Pine, and Big Axe—within a short drive of town.
Real estate ranges from spacious four-bedroom houses with private docks on the larger, 500-plus-acre lakes that go for about $450,000 to smaller, two-bedroom cabins with shared beach access for about $200,000, says Chad Schwendeman, a local real estate broker at Exit Lakes Realty Premier. Luxury condos on the larger lakes can go for about $500,000.
Most of his clients are second-home buyers coming from the Twin Cities.
“On a Friday, they can head north two hours and they’re at their cabins,” Schwendeman says.
4. Traverse City, MI
Median home list price: $327,050 2-year price appreciation: 17.8%
Traverse City, MI

Even without accounting for its proximity to Lake Michigan, the second largest of the Great Lakes, Traverse City—known simply in many parts as “T.C.”—is one of the premier lake recreation destinations. It was ranked one of the best in the state, according to MidwestLiving, and the country, according to personal finance site WalletHub. It’s about four hours east, and worlds away, from Detroit.
Lake lovers here have plenty of home options, including one- or two-bedroom condos near the beach starting around $100,000, or four-bedroom, two-bathroom homes down the street from a lake for about $200,000.
Buyers with money to burn may prefer one of the Traverse City mansions, such as this 8,468-square-foot beauty with views of the water, a movie theater, wine cellar, and heated pool for just under $3 million.
The attractions don’t just revolve around Lake Michigan. The Boardman Lake is an official Blue Ribbon trout fishery (the designation is only for lakes with outstanding water quality, accessibility, and sustainable fish management).
Bonus: In late June and early July, Traverse City hosts the National Cherry Festival, an annual extravaganza that attracts more than a half-million visitors. The area is also home to roughly 30 wineries that have taken advantage of its grape-friendly latitude.
5. Gardnerville Ranchos, NV
Median home list price: $575,000 2-year price appreciation: 23.4%
Mansion on Lake Tahoe
realtor.com
The Gardnerville Ranchos metro area is the most expensive lake town on our list—for good reason. The county lines a good portion of Lake Tahoe, a popular destination for the rich, the famous, and just about everyone else. The area is also located on the El Dorado National Forest and boasts sweeping mountain and waterfront views. Bliss.
Recreationally speaking, Tahoe, which straddles the California-Nevada border, is the 800-pound gorilla that drives the region’s economy. It’s said that people come for the skiing but stay for the lake.
The area is particularly appealing to nearby California residents. They can escape high state taxes if they cross Lake Tahoe into Nevada and live in the cheaper state for six months and a day. There are few modest homes to be found (operative word: few). But there are plenty of breathtaking mansions going up, including this $47 million beauty with a guesthouse, stables, and a private pier.
6. Port Clinton, OH

When most of us think of a dreamy summer destination with quiet bays, beaches, and nearby islands that require a passport to visit (Canada, eh?), northern Ohio isn’t the first place that comes to mind. Yet Port Clinton, a small town with a population of just under 6,000 , is the epicenter of one of the better kept secrets among fans of lake recreation due to its prime location on one of the Great Lakes.
Located on a peninsula that juts into the western end of Lake Erie, Port Clinton sees its population swell in the high season as visitors descend on the mom-and-pop shops, restaurants, and antique stores in nearby towns. The area offers a half-dozen lakefront parks, as well as the three Bass islands and Kelley’s Island. The latter is a major tourism center served by ferries and a small public airport.
Real estate in the area is a real mix, with quite a few reasonably priced condos on the market. Buyers can snag one-bedroom condos right on Lake Erie for under $135,000, while modest beach houses can be found in the mid-$300,000 range. Buyers seeking to splurge can pick up this luxurious, five-bedroom, five-bathroom house on a bluff for $850,000.
7. Coeur d’Alene, ID
Median home list price: $393,750 2-year price appreciation: 24.7%
Coeur d’Alene, ID

Located at the far end of the Bitterroot Mountains in Idaho’s northern panhandle, Coeur d’Alene is more than a lake town. It’s an outdoor paradise surrounded by mountains, rivers, hiking trails, and abundant wildlife. It’s also a convenient 38-minute drive from Spokane, WA, a major travel hub. That may be why this small town where everyone knows your name and boasts little to no traffic is attracting so many ex-Californians, according to the website Livability.
Residents and visitors have their choice of three major lakes—Lake Pend Oreille, Lake Coeur d’Alene, and Priest Lake—each with abundant opportunities for boating, swimming, and first-rate frolicking.
The cost of living here is slightly higher than the national average (just look at this $3.25 million three-bed, four-bath, waterfront condo with every amenity imaginable), but it’s still considerably cheaper than big Western cities such as Denver, Portland, Seattle, and San Francisco.
Buyers who are amenable to living near but not on the water can find plenty of deals, including this charming, two-bedroom, one-bath home for $165,000.
8. Sonora, CA
Median home list price: $349,200 2-year price appreciation: 16.8%
Washington Street in Sonora, CA
Google Maps
The gold rush that defined the early days of this Central California town played out long ago. It’s been replaced by geographical gold: Sonora is the closest city to Yosemite, the crown jewel of the national parks system. Although the park is best known for massive granite cliffs like El Capitan, there’s no shortage of lakes inside and outside the park.
“It’s a small community,” says Heidi Bettis, a local real estate agent at Coldwell Banker Segerstrom. “But if you’re an outdoors person, it’s the best place to be.”
Many of Bettis’ clients are from the San Francisco Bay Area, who buy second homes throughout Tuolumne County, where Sonora is located. The environment and climate, which features about 260 days of sunshine a year, have been key in attracting retirees and economic refugees fleeing the high costs of San Francisco, about three hours away.
“You can buy a million-dollar cabin or you can get a little, tiny, 700-square-foot cabin for $200,000,” Bettis says.
9. Sevierville, TN
Median home list price: $252,500 2-year price appreciation: 24.2%

Neighboring Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge can have their swarms of tourists. Friendly Sevierville, a more under-the-radar vacation spot and hometown of country legend Dolly Parton, will take the anglers and lake fans. (It’s about 30 minutes east of Knoxville.)
“Lakefront real estate in our area is pretty variable,” says Ron Laughlin, a local real estate agent at Century 21 MVP. They range from 2,000-square-foot cabins on the water built in the 1970s on several acres that go for between $300,000 and $350,000 to 5,000-square-foot, more modern homes than can fetch $2 million. “There’s a few real high-baller homes, but not that many.”
Douglas Lake, barely a 20-minute drive from downtown, attracts 1.7 million visitors annually. They are drawn to the lake’s boating and reputation as one of the best lakes in the nation for largemouth bass and crappie fishing.
10. Spirit Lake, IA
Median home list price: $296,900 2-year price appreciation: 3.2%
Orleans Beach on Spirit Lake, IA

Those who love to fish may want to hightail it to Spirit Lake. The Northern Iowa region has a well-earned rep as a great place to catch pike and muskellunge. Spirit Lake, which shares a tiny part of its namesake with neighboring Minnesota, is surrounded by a quartet of lakes, including the east and west sides of Lake Okoboji. It’s also home to the Berkley fishing tackle company, launched in 1937 by a 16-year-old paper delivery boy who used backyard chicken feathers and the family dog’s hair to craft hand-tied flies for vacationing anglers.
“We’re a resort town. Memorial Day to Labor Day, that’s when everybody makes hay. The lakes get a tremendous amount of use,” says Aaron Jones, a real estate broker at Re/Max Lakes Realty. “Outside of that time frame, we’re just a small town.”
Most of the buyers are looking for second homes, ranging from $300,000 to well above $5 million, that sit vacant in the off-season. They typically hail from the Midwest within a 300-mile radius of Spirit Lake, Jones says.
“We still have a lot of fishing cabins that were built in the early 1900s. They’re little two-bedroom, one-bath cabins that now can sell for half a million bucks,” Jones says. You just can’t deny the allure of lakefront land.

Translating Minnesota for New Englanders Coming to the Super Bowl
  by Joanne Meehl
If you’re coming to the Super Bowl, here are some things about Minneapolis (and Minnesota) you’ll want to know, translated by this former Bostonian. I may meander a bit as I write a section but in the end, it all helps you better navigate the place and the culture.
Note: For all Super Bowl events, see this guide: https://www.mnsuperbowl.com/events
Here we go, in no particular order:
1.26.18
The WIND
It’s almost always windy here. Which is no fun when it’s super cold and/or when it’s snowing. We don’t get as much snow as you do in Massachusetts but it stays around longer because it’s colder. It was in the 40s yesterday and will be so today, but the temps predicted for game day will be closer to zero. So be sure to bring the right headgear or you’ll be miserable. On bad days I wear a knitted hood/scarf under my hooded jacket. You know that heavy-duty parka in the back of your closet that you save for Mt. Washington or the colder slopes in Vermont or Maine? Bring it.
And that’s why there are about 8 miles of Skyways in Minneapolis and St. Paul, each. The Skyway connects you from building to building at the 2nd floor in most cases and often there are stores and restaurants and companies along the way, almost a second city. If it’s going to be that cold leading up to the game, you’ll learn to love the Skyways.
But Winter’s Fun, Doncha Know
Minnesota makes winter fun with the “Bold North” theme. There are many outdoor activities at this time of year and in “the cities” especially near the stadium it’s very walkable. There are many guides being published online and elsewhere that list “best of” restaurants and other venues, such as at Trip Advisor. There’s a lively music and theater scene (more live theater seats here than anywhere outside of NYC), tons of breweries, university/college culture. Politically we lean left but not nearly as much as Mass., and people here are typically thoughtful and considerate. And yes, nice. Predominate heritage here is German, Norwegian, Swedish, and Lutheran so you won’t find the outgoing-ness of the East Coast.
Architecture
Before I ever visited the area, I had this image of boxy Midwestern buildings. Wrong! Even in the suburbs, there is very cool architecture and building lighting here. Definitely not Boston red brick colonial.
Also, many cities here built their Main Street just like other streets. Don’t look for the town green with the old white church.
Terminology 1 - Parking
Parking garages: They’re called “parking ramps” here. And they smell better than in Boston. And amazingly, in many places in the denser suburbs, they are free. And in the city (or St. Paul, nearby) the cost of parking is way lower than it is in Boston. But expect them to be full. Easiest: Park outside the city, take the light rail in. You know, like parking in Newton and taking the Green Line into Boston.
 Terminology 2 - Food
Soda is called pop here. Casseroles are called “hot dish”.
Terminology 3 - The cities and geography
Minneapolis and St. Paul (the state’s capital) are known of course as the Twin Cities. People here just say “the cities”. Minneapolis is a bit more cosmopolitan and modern, St. Paul more Old World and a bit lower profile skyline. St. Paul is often called “the last city of the East, and Minneapolis “the first city of the west” because of where they are located on the Mississippi. So you’ll find TV and radio stations here that are like WCCO (St. Paul, east of the river) and KARE11, west of the river. BTW, I watch KARE11 for news and they’ll be broadcasting all week up to the game from Nicolette Mall, a bunch of streets in Minneapolis currently dedicated to the Super Bowl. The media here is pretty sophisticated.
Terminology 4 - Native Americans
Native Americans here prefer to be called Indians. So if you hear Minnesotans referring to Indians, they are not being politically incorrect, they are just using the preferred terminology. Unlike in the Northeast, here Indian tribes wield economic and political power. They run most if not all of the casinos in the state.
 Radio
For THE best music radio station anywhere, even beating the college stations in Boston/Cambridge, don’t miss 89.3 The Current. It’s a Minnesota Public Radio station dedicated to indie/local/cutting edge rock and new artists, though they’ll surprise you with Billie Holiday or classic blues every now and then. Their hosts know their stuff, too. My favorite place for jazz and similar: The Dakota. Great food there, too.
 Finding your way around
The grid of streets in Minneapolis is pretty easy to understand. In some suburban cities (yes, there is such a thing here – think Weymouth or Framingham, for comparison), such as Plymouth (Minnesota) and Maple Grove, street names are used over and over again – so there might be 4 Norwood Lanes but what separates them is their numbers (always 4 or more) so you’ll find Norwood Lane in the 6000s is a whole different location than the Norwood Lane in the 7000s. Oh, and you will find that Minnesota has cities or towns named Andover, Bellingham, Cambridge, Lexington, Melrose, Randolph which still weirds me out when I stumble upon them.
 The Mississippi
Although the Charles River through Boston is pretty wide there at the Zakim and other bridges, when you see the Mississippi you feel its might. It’s figured into so much of our nation’s history, including here in Minnesota. To see it, go to the Guthrie Theater at the north end of Minneapolis, and, well, just look down. The theater is worth a tour all on its own – someplace I take everyone who visits here, because of its cool history, the actors who’ve played there, and the performances, of course. Great little gift shop and restaurant, too. An hour or two south, the river is even wider and truly awe inspiring.
 Prices
It’s generally less expensive here than in Massachusetts/New England but people *are* raising prices for a week or so before and after the game. If you’re renting someone’s apartment while here, know that what you’re paying they will use to pay their mortgage for a few months. Hey, you’re from the East Coast, you can afford it, right? ;)
Religion
Lutheran Lutheran Lutheran -- it’s the main denomination here for white people. But that means a wide range, from old fashioned Garrison Keiller-style Lutheran church ladies to very right-wing Christian. There are many stand-alone Christian churches who while outwardly nice are largely anti-gay, anti-liberal, man-in-charge-of-the-family type churches. People here in general assume you are Christian and wear their Christianity pretty openly, even at business meetings, which I found jarring when I first moved here. And still do.
There is a large Muslim population, Ethiopians and other Africans who’ve settled here over the years, who are now running for office and taking leadership roles.
Guns
When I first moved here and saw signs at the doors of many restaurants and stores and elsewhere that said “No guns allowed here”, I was like WHAT?! GUNS?! Know that here in the northern Midwest, you are not in Massachusetts, and that you are now in “most of America” which is a gun culture and that’s really clear here. Minnesota is not an open-carry state (so far) so you won’t see people brandishing their weapon.
Yes, it’s worth it to go to the Mall of America
It was built inside a former baseball stadium so you get the idea of size. Four stories, three levels of stores (some are in the mall twice because it’s so big), hotels, restaurants, and a full amusement park at its center. The light rail (surface rail line, like the T only way cleaner!) comes right to the mall from downtown. Ikea is right next door. You’ll definitely get your steps in no matter where you go there.
 Minnesota is HUGE
Minnesota is larger than all of New England put together. It has 87 counties (vs. 14 in Mass., and I can still name them all). If someone here says they are “from outstate”, they mean they’re from outside the metro area. The state was settled in the 1800s and became a state in 1858, relatively recent times to those of us from New England who are used to dates from the 1600s and 1700s in our states’ histories.
The state is 1/3 mostly pine forest (north), 1/3 deciduous trees (the middle third, most like the Northeast US, including maple trees), and 1/3 plains (south). It’s flat or rolling with some elevation in Duluth, about 2.5 hours northeast of the Twin Cities and a cool industrial chic college town. North of there on the way to Canada is the Sawtooth Range, a low “mountain” range along Lake Superior.
Lake Superior: Seeing any Great Lake for the first time is an absolutely freaky experience: it’s the ocean, you think, because there’s waves and seagulls and an unlimited horizon. But then again it doesn’t smell like the ocean. Many in the Minnesota-Wisconsin-Michigan-Illinois area refer to this part of the country as “the central coast”, because the Great Lakes really feel like the ocean, including expensive property prices if you want a house on the shore.
 Taxes
Minnesota is the most heavily taxed state in this north central part of the US. Result: highly educated people, a rich diversity of industries, many free options including a strong county-based library system and amazing outdoor activities like trails everywhere even in the hearts of most cities. But compared to the tax rates back east, they’re pretty moderate, so when I first arrived here and people said “Oh, our taxes are so high!”, I laughed at them. I then pointed out how many services they have and the quality of life. New buildings, beautiful ball fields and sporting facilities, family activities, free movies and music on town stages, large civic centers, STEM schools, much more than I used to see back east.
So quality of life is high here. There’s a saying that real estate people here use: “When people are asked by their company to transfer here, they usually are against it. But they take the transfer. Then when their company wants to transfer them elsewhere later, they refuse because they love the quality of life so much, and they stay”.
 More about the people here
Yes, there’s “Minnesota nice”, people who will help you in all kinds of ways even if they don’t know you. But Minnesotans have a rigid circle around themselves: They tend not to live elsewhere, meaning they go to college in Minnesota and get married here and stay here, even if they are transferred around by their company, they vacation here. So family is central to their lives and their best friends are family, not necessarily someone they work with.
If you’re outside that circle you get to experience Minnesota Ice… in Massachusetts, you meet someone and pretty early on you’re inviting them over for dinner so you can get to know them better. In the 8 years I lived in one neighborhood here, no one ever had us over for dinner. I learned not to take offense because, as one native told me, they don’t invite EACH OTHER over for dinner – because they’re not family. I took some exercise classes and normally have an easy time striking up converations with people but not here: the women who were 100% of the class, after I’d say hi, would turn away and resume converations with their friends they came to class with, and not introduce you to the others. So it’s hard to make friends here if you’re not from the family!
 Minnesota Drivers
Minnesota drivers are maddening. At stop lights, they stop at least one car length from the line at the lights. You wonder if the light will get tripped by the first car being so far back (it does, somehow). The light turns green, and the person ahead of you now seems to be making a decision: Can I go? Is it OK to go? Will I be considered obnoxious if I go? For this still-impatient Bay Stater, it makes me nuts they are so slow on the green light. I don’t use my car horn to push someone but jeezelouise, after a few moments you want to  Even if you are about to crash into them, they WILL NOT use their horns; they would rather you hit them than they be careful and use their horn – because, dontchaknow, that would be being aggressive.
