Awwww thanks for the tag!
What made me like them:
Okay so. . .definitely NOT his outfit LMFAOOOOO. Everytime I'm drawing him or thinking too much about him for RP purposes I have to sit back and pause for a second and go "Why the hell am I so obsessed with this guy?? He looks so goofy I want to punch him in his stupid pretty face" BUT hear me out. lISTEN- he's got actual charm and a wonderful personality. Once I've delved more into his backstory and read his lore, what got to me was his undeniable love for his family and for others, even though at first it's overshadowed by his Tsundere prickly behavior. He's sympathetic to everyone and treats others with respect regardless of their social status his best friend was his butler and he was usually ostracized for not mingling enough with his social class. He's got a good heart/moral compass it's just hard to see it at first. ALSO the way he presents himself. He's confident, highly intelligent, comes from high society so he knows his manners, also lives as a hobo so he's got some street survival skills as well, sometimes behaves childishly (similar to myself), he wants to look older but he's stuck looking quite young (just like me IRL). He may not seem like it to most, but to me. . . he's like Zuko and Kaz Brekker combined. He's also got that OUAT Rumplestiltskin effect- LISTEN he looks nonthreatening and weird BUT fans are attracted to him because of the way he holds himself. Confident, powerful, snarky attitude, is always one step ahead of his enemies, it's giving sigma male energy/malewife babygirl if I'm being so honest lol
Also one of the main reasons I like him is that he's extremely similar to my IRL fiance. There's just bits and pieces that remind me of my fiance Haru. If you combined Ollie's zodiac sign, personality, and background with Drew's personality and caring behavior then you'd get my fiance tbh lol
My favorite thing about them:
I've already said most of the reasons in the previous response but there's also the fact that he thinks he's cool and mature but nope he's just an introverted dork that hyperfixates on the most randomest shit cacti and barbeque of all things??? and hates socializing. He's just like me fr fr. But my absolute favorite thing is, again. . .his willingness to help others despite his demeanor. He literally sacrificed himself in canon and he doesn't bat an eye at interacting with people that aren't from the same upbringing. He just sees people as people. There's also A TON of similarities that we have. Being the youngest, always seen as immature no matter how hard we try not to be, dead daddy issues and mommy issues, being doted on by someone undeniably loyal to you, not good with people unless there's a common interest, the fact that I live in the desert and have worked at a literal Pyramid themed hotel/casino (think of the Golden City in Utgard . . .yea), etc. etc.
Nicknames we have for each other:
I call him Cactus Boi
A headcanon for our relationship/friendship:
I don't really have a OC/self insert to ship with him admittedly. It's weird when I think about how my relationship/friendship is with this green guy. . .it's not so much as a romantic thing mostly because since I roleplay as him and have studied so much about him it's more along the lines of. . .I'm kinda like his PR manager. With the occasional pining. . .it's like a type of friends with benefits thing??? Idk man. I just tell him to do a thing and whenever he refuses I bribe him with the ol' Do it for the glory of House Ramses. You've gotta do it for your legacy. Then he'll grumble a bit and do the thing because of his pride and mission to restore the House no matter the cost. He self sacrifices all the time what's so different about this
My favorite image of them:
From the Official Character Expression Sheet for Ollie (Osiris)
LOOK AT THIS SASSY MF MANSPREADING
OF COURSE THE RICH BOY WITH A PROBLEM WITH AUTHORITY WOULD SIT JUST LIKE THIS. YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BE A PRINCE NOT AN EDGY RECKLESS EMO- I CANT TELL IF I WANT TO SIT ON YOUR LAP OR KICK YOU IN THE CROTCH. YA DUMB CACTUS BOI. I HATE YOU AND I LOVE YOU GRRRRRR
Anything else:
I literally got back into Dislyte last year because of C.ai and Chai asdfghjkl it didn't help that the theme of my workplace was Egyptian themed and I was left unsupervised for most of the day with my phone with nothing to do 馃憖馃憖
Ayo if y'all want more Ollie ranting/fangirling just join my roleplay discord. We talk about everything House Ramses and Dislyte. (Honestly I'm more of a slightly ooc Ollie and I'm more communicative with the members than canon Ollie would be with his peers) You don't even have to roleplay you can just be yourself if you want and just lurk. DM me so I can send u the invite link.

Okay thank you
I ABSOLUTELY HATE IT WHEN PEOPLE JUST FUCKING ERASE HOOKS MISSING HAND IN THESE FICS!!!! like yes. Obviously, in most fics, it won't make sense for him to have a hook as a prosthetic, right, that's fine, wonderful.
DONT FUCKING JUST GIVE HIM HIS HAND BACK! NOT UNLESS YOU MAKE SURE THE BACKSTORY IN YOUR FIC IS IMPORTANT AND HAS A REASON FOR HIM TO NOT HAVE HIS DISABILITY!!!!
Like for fucks sake, you want to write He uses both hands instead of one hand THERE ARE PLENTY OF WONDERFUL AND COOL AND AMAZING COMPLICATED WORKING PROSTHETIC HANDS YOU CAN GIVE HIM INSTEAD!!!!
It always pissed me off when people just erase a characters disability in their fan fictions. Especially with Hook when most of them have his Modern AU backstory involve him being in the Navy and includes Milah somehow, show some goddamn creativity and come up with a reason he lost his hand. Or say he lost it in the Navy for fucks sake.
By all the gods stop erasing his missing hand.
Wow. That was fast, Nonny. Very fast, lol.
AND I AGREE WITH YOU 100%!!!
Honestly, the main reason I avoid OUAT AUs (and AUs in general, actually, regardless of source material - but especially OUAT ones) is because the backstories of the characters are so important in them becoming who they are that I just can't see them still being the same people if you change their backgrounds entirely.
This is especially true when it comes to Killian Jones and his missing hand. I've seen all kinds of AU scenarios, where he loses it in a war, where he loses it in a car accident, where he gets it cut off by a mob boss... and, I mean, those are all okay, I guess - but they all pale in comparison to the canon story. I mean, you just can't compare "the evil of all evils casually lops your hand off to get the magic bean you're holding after he's just crushed the heart of the woman you love right in front of you" and "lost your hand in the war". True, both will have a major effect on who you are as an overall person... but they're going to affect you in profoundly different ways.
There's also the whole timing thing. In canon, Killian's hand was lopped off hundreds of years ago. His resentment and need for revenge are still there, yes, but the actual pain is long in the past. And the fact that he's hung on to his anger and still thirsts for revenge even after hundreds of years speaks to how deeply Rumplestiltskin truly wounded him that day. You just can't duplicate that in a modern AU, no matter how hard you try. Okay, fine, he lost his hand in a car wreck. Would he still be mad about it 200 years from now?
Which, of course, brings me to my #1 reason for avoiding OUAT AUs - there is absolutely no way to properly portray the emotional importance of Milah in Killian's life within the confines of a modern, non-magical world. He kept that torch burning for hundreds of years, people. She wasn't his previous girlfriend who died a year ago. She wasn't his ex who left him for another man. She was his first and only love, slaughtered in front of his eyes, that he remained in love with and turned avenging her death into his sole reason for existence for hundreds of fucking years. Write me a better lovestory.
Oh, wait. But there IS one. It's the story of the woman who managed to reach past all that baggage and emotional turmoil to touch his heart again, a heart not touched by anyone else in hundreds of fucking years, to find the good man inside and lift him out of the abyss of darkness his life had become.
And you LOSE the most magical part of that story when you change it into "guy with an ex who lost his hand in the war" or even "guy whose last love was killed by a criminal who maimed him at the same time" because none of those scenarios do a proper job of exhibiting how deeply he loved Milah, how profoundly he was scarred by her death and his maiming, how long he's been floundering in the dark, and how ready he is to be saved from that. Make Milah as important to him as she should be in a modern AU, and it reads false when he gets over it a year or two later and moves on with Emma. Gloss over Milah and her profound effect on him, and you have an altogether different man.
Which brings me back to the missing hand. Much like Milah, Killian's hook is a huge part of who he is. First, there's why and how he was maimed - it wasn't an accident. It wasn't a casualty of war. It was a cold, callous, purposeful maiming by the unstoppable force that just killed the love of his life. And he didn't randomly choose that hook. It's a symbol of his failure that day - his failure to protect Milah, his failure to kill Rumple, his failure to keep the bean from him. It's also a promise - a promise to himself and to Milah that he will correct those wrongs. He will avenge her death, kill Rumple, and succeed with the very tool he failed with the first time.
You can't just slap a prosthetic hand on him and call it a day.
Nor can you minimize the importance of that hook to him after literally hundreds of years using it. There's a reason why Storybrooke Hook doesn't modernize his hook or "upgrade" to a proper prosthetic. After hundreds of years, he's had his hook far longer than he even had the hand. It's a part of him. (Incidentally, I love that Wish Hook's cursed form had a modern prosthetic and that WHook kept it even after the curse broke - this is, I think, the only way I can envision any version of Killian Jones voluntarily switching from the hook.) You're not going to get that same connection between a man and his hook in any kind of modern AU. Again, it's a constraint of time.
I guess, simply put, you need a couple hundred years to properly create Killian Jones as he's meant to be. Modern AUs simply don't have the time to believably form the character. They can make a facsimile of him, but it's like a cake taken out of the oven too early - it just doesn't stand up on its own the way it should.
Oh, and I ain't got no time for people erasing the missing hand entirely. I'll be honest. I just "nope" right out of those as soon as I realize that's what they're doing. God gave us a back button for a reason, my friend, and that reason is OUAT fics where Killian has both hands.
Of course, Captain Duckling fics are a whole different ball of wax, I suppose... but I avoid those, anyway, because that's literally not the Killian Jones I know and love. It's cake batter in a bowl.
馃槶 for all the kink/whump writers who have to figure out how bondage works with only one hand, though. Honestly, that's the only way I'll forgive magical hand replacement or glossing over. I mean, that shit's complicated. But even then... I dunno, Nonny, it doesn't feel like Killian when he's got two hands. It could just as well be anybody, y'know? And then what's the point?!
