Heey!! Sorry to bother u, but I was rereading Lítost for maybe the sixth time and just wanted to ask if u could give us a little snippet of the next chapter?? Pls? I've read it for the first time soon after it was posted, and I just love how in-character all your characters are. Sending love!!
you've read it so many times? 🥺 I'm seriously not worthy of you. thank you so so much for your patience! I can imagine how frustrating it must be having waited that long and I'm so greatful that you and the people who have contacted me are so nice about it ♥
As for the snippet, chapter 2 opens with a (admittedly long) flashback that gives us an insight to the late dynamic Obi-Wan/Padme/Anakin had.
I went a bit back and forth whether the snippet should be from present moment but I think that part needs more editing so I hope you'll be happy with the opening flashback instead 🫶
Master Yoda truly knew how to deliver a punishment when he wanted to. Obi-Wan thought dryly as his eyes took in the people who were slowly arriving. The sounds of cheers, and claps and clicks could still be heard from the reporters outside, who were waiting like hawks did their pray to capture the perfect and the worst shots of the guests.
Master Yoda had had called it a simple request; “Fond of you are many Senators. With a familiar face content more they will feel.”
He had no choice but to accept and guard the multiple politicians that were to attend the gala and ensure their safety. Obi-Wan wasn’t a big fan of the unnecessary glamour or the spotlight. He was a Jedi, he didn’t belong here. There was next to nothing he could do however, especially after the stun Anakin had pulled.
Padme had been trying to comm him restlessly the past few days. To apologize, he presumed. Regardless of the inevitable talk they were bound to have eventually, he still felt hurt at her actions; for going behind his back, against her own word to tell Anakin of the secret mission the council had assigned him. What a fool he had been; to entrust her with his doubts, with his fears. Just because he had warmed their bed a couple of times, didn’t mean she would have his back. Padme and Anakin would always choose each other in the end and for the first time he wondered when he had stopped being an option for Anakin.
When had they stopped being a team?
A hand clasped his right shoulder firmly, “Where does your mind travelling, my friend?”
He sighed before he took another sip of the drink the senator had recommended him. He grimaced at the spicy flavour; he was more keen on the sugary side.
“To be frank, I’m just thinking how wasteful my presence is.”
Bail didn’t take his comment unkindly. He laughed easily and shook his head in a feign disappointment. “Wasteful? You already left quite a good impression on one of my friends.”
He raised his glass to toast at someone and Obi-Wan followed his gaze, which lead to Senator Danu. Yes, the Senator had an interesting viewpoint of the Kuat's shipyards, but seemed too concern about the guests who had yet to arrive. He, too, found a Jedi’s presence unnecessary - he was supposed to be fighting a war, not spend his night with the high social class of Coruscant but how could Obi-Wan explain that his attendance was more of a punishment than a service? “An interesting man indeed.”
“Your ability to blend among us must be a curse.” Bail teased him between his giggles and Obi-Wan wondered whether his had snatched an extra glass under his unsupervised eye.
“I wouldn’t call it a curse. More of an unwanted gift.”
“Ahhh, I’m certain you’ll endure.” He nodded, giving him another pat on his shoulder as his face brightened at the sight of another quest who entered. Obi-Wan couldn’t see him clearly as the people started filling in the room but Bail seemed to sober up rather quickly as he finished his remaining drink and left it on the table. “If you excuse me I have another friend to catch up. This is a night off for you Obi-Wan, try to relax.”
He watched silently as Bail walked across the room to greet an Ithorian Senator before they both made their way towards Senator Amedda who was conversing with Senator Taa. His eyes narrowed at their clumsily attempt to appear obscured as they tucked themselves in the other side of the roo,. He would have to ask Padme if there was something stirring within the Congress.
Speaking of whom, she was radiant tonight. He thought a little dazed. The multi-colored gown hugged her petite form elegantly and her bodice was studded with beads and pearls complimenting her low-cut neckline wonderfully. Delicate embroidery was stitched at the hems of her dress and her silky brown hair were pulled back a by a silver headpiece made of embossed pieces of metal connected by tiny silver shells, allowing her face to be unconcealed. The rest of the hair were wound into a large braided bun, with the remainder of two stray strands framing her face. Obi-Wan had to wonder how long she must have sat to allow her handmaids to create such an artwork. He looked up, meeting her kind amber brown eyes; warm and inviting. Obi-Wan could easily get lost in them. He had almost begun to return the smile she gave him before he caught a sight that immobilized him to the spot. Anakin was there He stood right there, in all his glory with arms crossed and an angry petulant grimace on his face. Rather clumsily, Obi-Wan put back the glass on the table; it clinked against the tray, disturbing his uneasy thoughts.
He was suddenly weary as they ambled through the crowd; it was almost poetically fitting; him against them – separated by a sea of people. But Padme was determined, even as she made small stops to chatter and greet the people who demanded her attention.
Her smile was tight, fake and by the way her fingers twitched he could tell she was getting impatient. Anakin wasn’t hard to figure out. He always wore his heart on his sleeve, something Obi-Wan had continued to chastise him for years. Anakin rolled his eyes quite rudely in his opinion as he nodded whatever the quest was telling them and tagged Padme away.
“Obi-Wan!” Padme cheerfully saluted him, pretending to have just spotted him now. As if no one had noticed the furtive looks she had been sending at his direction from the minute he walked in.
“Senator Amidala, Anakin…” He greeted them with a slight bow, hands crossed behind his back in a perfect pose as he eyed their intertwined fingers with distaste.
Padme took a notice of it and dropped Anakin’s hand quickly as if it burnt her. She scanned around the crowd, suddenly concerned if anyone noticed her impulsive behaviour. Good. He thought, she should be Anakin glared both of them, probably annoyed at their façades. “Hello, Master…” The way he dragged his title was enough to let Obi-Wan know of his mood. “None of that Obi” She told him gently, placing a soft hand on his forearm.
He tensed at the endearment and cleared his throat, gently shaking her hand off as he looked at his former padawan whose fists clenched at his side. “Did you at least have the consideration to require permission from the council for your attendance here or is it another thing I should report?”
Padme folded her arms under her chest, making it temporarily difficult to concentrate as she raised her chin slightly upwards in defiance. "I requested his presence from the council and they granted permission without any objection"
Because they'll question me later. He thought, suddenly exhausted. He would be the one to stand once more in front of the council and defend Anakin’s actions until he was out of breath. How someone as intelligent as Padme could be so thoughtless and impetuous with her secret marriage was beyond him. Did they really believe their pretence wasn’t obvious? “I see… Well then I wish you both to enjoy the rest of your night.” A resilient hold prevented him from moving and he was pulled back roughly only to meet Anakin’s furious stare. “This isn’t fair!” Padme tried to sooth Anakin but he shrugged of her hand, his attention sorely on him. “You were ready to lie, to deceive us! And you have the gall to pretend to be offended?"
Obi-Wan tried in vain to jerk away his arm but Anakin’s solid hold only tightened painfully around him. He glanced around; making sure no one was watching the display of disrespect.”Lie, deceive? I’m not the one who hid his secret marriage for years” He accused him coldly and Anakin had the audacity to look shocked.
He relished him at last from his iron hold and stumbled backwards as if he had been slapped. His gazed lowered for a moment as if considering his next words before they hardened. “I thought we had moved passed that”
Obi-Wan studied the two for a moment, contemplating how worthwhile the argument was. “Perhaps I haven’t.”
Padme’s brows furrowed in guarded curiosity, “Why didn’t you tell us?”
Why indeed. How could he explain that he was in no rush to open old wounds? How every night they spent together, he had to wonder if it would be the last?
The air fell still between them and for once Obi-Wan was glad for the people who surrounded them; their mindless chattering was enough to fill the heavy silence. Despite the recently closed bond, he could sense the storm in his beloved eyes. Guilt sent little squirming feelings slithering through his belly at their suffering. He was hurting them for no reason. It wasn’t their fault they couldn’t understand. Their relationship was already so fragile and freshly new, it left him buffed on how to treat them and hesitant at the risk of destroying what they had built through their friendship
He thought of Siri, of how he had begged her to leave the Order with him, of how close he had been to convincing her to go. He thought of Cerasi; young, and passionate - his love for her had burnt brighter than any light. And then there was Satine; strong yet gentle, just as lovely as she was wise. She had seen the bigger picture, had known they wouldn’t be able to thrive together, not when their duties had become their priorities.
His love for these women had been selfish, and childish. His passion, naivety and yearning had been overwhelmingly consuming, a bubbling sensation slowly rising so close to the surface, he had been certain he would explode.
So far, he had been perfectly content with loving Padme and Anakin from afar. They had each other; he had to constantly remind himself every time the waves of envy and possessiveness made their way to his head.
His friendship with Padme had helped fill the gap between him and Anakin; the miscommunication that had existed between them for so long and yet…
Padme was never supposed to enjoy his company enough to want him to stick around and Anakin was never meant to dwell so deep into his heart. Somehow, the two had decided to cast aside logic and thought it was normal to start pursuing him
He refused to make the same mistakes again
He gave her a sidelong glance, opting to ignore their hurtful expressions, “This is neither the place nor the time for this.”
“When will it be then?” Anakin stepped forward, jaw clenched tightly as his eyes trailed his face as if searching for an answer. “When will it be when all you’ve done is shut us out?”
“What angered you most Anakin?” He turned facing him, a taunting tone painted in his voice. “That I was ready to accept the mission or that I chose Padme instead of you to know the truth?”
Padme could barely hide her mid surprise. Her eyes darted between them in uncertainty before she shook her head and claimed with confidence. “That’s not true, right Ani?”
Anakin did not respond.

Ive been thinking about this for a few days, now
So, I was logged in with Qizulth, fixing his dark side corruption because I'd forgotten to turn it on for his new outfit
And I noticed
Synnda's complexion option is like Identical to Dark 2/3 corruption - darker around his eyes, the veins in his face more prominent, BRIGHT yellow eyes
And it got me thinking
What if he IS actually corrupted. Not from like Using it, but the shielding technique???? Dude. He literally pulled darkness into himself to protect those Masters from it. And he FREED Vivicar, instead of destroying Terrak Morhage, so he's probably still withholding a lot of that darkness he drew out of the Masters/Vivicar
When I eventually replay him (again...), I'm Heavily Considering adjusting his complexion slightly throughout chapter 1. And with him being so freakin light-sided it would really take a toll on him
Outlander!Synnda actually uses the dark side to some degree. Not nearly as much as a Sith or to be noticeable by someone Force-blind, but a Jedi would still probably call him out on it, or At Least raise a brow. So it doesn't affect him as much in that AU
But then Canon Synnda? He'd have a much harder time coping with it
OOOO and maybe when he and Key are on the Star Fortress, and Synnda practically crushes the Exarch before dropping her into the reactor? Key can sense that he was channeling the dark side there
He has a hard time holding himself together sometimes, because he never really fully recovered from the shielding. So while Outlander!Synnda learns to cope with it, Canon has a much harder time
And I'm Debating having him talk to Key about it. Like. Those two practically see each other like brothers as they get to know one another better. And maaaayyyybe??? Key can actually help him to a degree?? hmmmmm
OR YUON. Gahhh I'd love him to have a heart-to-heart with his former Master about his struggles, and asks for her guidance just One Last Time
#swtor#jedi consular#blitz rambles#blitz's ocs#oc: synnda v'ehsz#and like. can u Imagine the first time he reports back to the council#with Obvious corruption in his face#and yet hes never been reported to stray from the jedi code#or harness dark side abilities???#it would explain why he starts wearing the masks too

Episode 1: Ambush
> Fuck yeeeeeaaahhh this intro is a fucking bop, I forgot how much I like it
> OH WAIT HANG ON YODAS IN THIS EPISODE, like it’s actually Yoda centric???? mad.. i thought it was going to be anakin and ahsoka this ep
> FUCK I KNOW THAT VOICE *enter ventress* - this woman could step on me and I’d say thank you ✨
> Oh shut tf up Dooku, nobody cares what you have to say
> “Sprung the trap, we have” no shit, is it just Yoda’s trademark to say exactly what’s going on?
> HAHAHAHAHHAAH “ITS MY PROGRAMMING”!!!!!
> I have some questions, who has the creativity to come up with characters and planets that look like this?? Like that’s so cool????
> Huh you actually think you’re gonna catch Yoda???? Interesting thought.
> HAHAHAHAHA SMALL SHRIVELLED GREEN ONE WITH A LIGHTSABER *accurate tho, and I live for Ventress’ sarcasm ngl
> I want to point out the peak humour of one droid saying stop, we’re not gonna fit, followed by a droid attempting to fit >> actually scratch that the droids are hilarious in general
> HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAH HIS GIGGLE AND THEN DO YOU GUYS KNOW WHAT HE MEANT?!
> why is yoda likeable in this episode??? If you can’t tell already, I don’t like Yoda very much.
> “He IS a little one!”
> alright fine. i admit it, I don’t think I’ve given Yoda enough credit, I didn’t like him much, but 10 minutes episode and I’m lowkey giggling at him.
> Dude Yoda is so cool *(Notes: i have written in a column here: should rename the title of part i to “Yoda is a fucking boss”)

> HA HA HA HA AH BITCH YODA GONNA KICK UR ASS
> Eh i don’t think I’ve said this enough, Yoda’s fucking cool.
> PFFFFFFFFFFTTTT fully just stole her lightsabers - imagine how much trouble Yoda would’ve saved himself if he had just kept the bastards instead of letting her take them back
> Alright fine, maybe I will enjoy this season.
Episode 2: Rising Malevolence
Notes: I am so sorry in advance, to be honest this entire one is just me either thirsting or cooing over Plo Koon and I can’t help it, and no, I still have not decided dad or daddy (its currently 14(?) hours after I watched the episode and I am still very undecided and I don’t think I’m ever gonna be able to make that choice)
> HEY ITS LITTLE BABEY AHSOKA AND OMG HOLY SHIT HES IN THIS EPISODE????????????????
> Lowkey I dunno if it’s dad or daddy?
> Awwwwwww Lil soka (wait I’m talking about Plo Koon in case you’re confused) (NOTES: uh I know I put it up top but just case you missed it)
> Sorry, did Anakin just say he was gonna ask the council?? The fuck??
>>Be mindful????? Who the fuck is this????
> Ugh it’s palptatunes slimy looking ass
> OBI OBI OBI OBI OBI OBI OBI
> oh shit man that’s bad *if you haven’t clued in I’m going on about the weapon
> AWWWWWW HE WAITS FOR THE CLONES TO GET ON FIRST
> dude what the fuck is going on with his hair??
> Everytime Plo talks my mind goes 🥰 sorry that’s off topic (or is it?)
> At least obi-wan sees sense, Anakin teaching an already reckless Ahsoka was never going to end up with them both being quiet
> AHSOKA! 😠
> Oh wait Wolffe doesn’t have his scar yet????? WAIT DOES THAT MEAN WE SEE HIM GET IT LATER?! Oh no oh no oh no oh no oh no oh no oh no oh-
> HAHAHAHAHA HE ONLY TAKES A BATH ON BREAK
> HMMMMMM AWWWWW I VALUE YOUR LIFE MORE THAN FINDING THAT WEAPON
> There’s more alive, oh good I was afraid that they- aw shit poor Plo he sounds like he feels so guilty
> fucking hell I just wanna give him a hug and kiss his cheek and make it all better (NOTES: see what I mean???? Thirst or fluff?)
> OOP THERE IT IS! I was wondering when the usual Anakin would show up
> “Redeployed himself.... again.” I can feel obi-wans exasperation with this kid man
> Okay so, Anakin is a little shit. So disobey the council but don’t tell them that I’m teaching you that
> Aw no there’s gonna be more clones die??????? Oh no and they have to watch oh no oh no oh no-
> I have questions: How are they screaming? I don’t think that’s how space works??? Ok but I legit don’t know?? Is it even possible to scream in space?? And shouldn’t it have killed them straight away?
> Aaawwwwww Ahsoka my baby (literally anytime this child comes on screen)
> “Anakin where are you” I love obi wan so much hahahahahahahahaha
> WAIT NO PLO AND FEW OF HIS SONS TROOPERS ARE ALIVE DONT LEAVE
> oh good job R2, crisis averted
> Pfffftttt the droid humming is distracting me from the more potential death
> Plo Koon is cooler than Yoda, you cant change my mind so don’t try.
> YEEEEETTTTTT poor sinker yikes I can’t imagine flying through space is fun
> PALPATINE YOU BASTARD HE PROBABLY WANTS MY LOVE DEAD HOW DARE HE
> “Twice the trouble they have become”?????? No shit Yoda. What were you thinking pairing these two disasters up?
> AND THEN HE TRIES TO GET THEM TO ABANDON DAD(DY?)
> R2’s whirring is a vibe tho
> AAAAAAHHHH NOT TO ME PLO MY HEART 🥺🥺
> oh god the animation is terrible (NOTES: I can’t believe it took me that long to make that comment)
> Aw he seems so sad, thank u Ahsoka, she gave him the love and hug he deserves
> Ugh now my internet’s playing up dang it, well this is infuriating, I WANT TO KNOW IF THEY DESTROY THE WEAPON OR NOT?!
> He seems so genuinely scared??????? Plo has me getting major feels
> OH SHIT FUCK THE OTHER DROID SHIT FUCK NO SHIT
> how did everyone hate Ahsoka when this first came out??? I love her so much
> I mean like, I know they’re not gonna die??? But I still feel so anxious omg
> Holy shit the disappointment that rolls off of dooku is kinda hilarious (it took all of me not to start giggling at this)
> “Riiiiiiiiiiiiight the council report”

j | write or describe an alternative ending to [insert fic].
You didn’t pick and I’ve been sitting on this for a while sO y’all get to know how From Eden was supposed to end before I wussed out and decided Nah Romance Y’all! I’m putting it at the end, though, because this is long enough as it is!
u | share three of your favorite fic writers and why you like them so much.
ryn i know u sent this and i hate you for making me pick anyone at all for anything sO YOU’RE RUDE, BLOCKED AND REPORTED, I’M MAKING YOU ONE OF THEM AND I HOPE IT GETS CHUMMY FOR YA
@fortunexkookie - ryn is easily one of my favorite writers, because everything they write is very real. like. each mc is relatable in their own way, they’re all very human and flawed and realistic, and i really love that. each of their iterations of the members are also very distinct, like their Falling Skies Jungkook is very different from their The Turing Test Jungkook, while still maintaining, I think, the things that make them them. Both Jungkooks are, at heart, very much like I imagine the real Jungkook to be, while still being distinct characters. If you dropped them both into a room, they’d have their own personalities and quirks and traits, but they’d still be JK. And the way Ryn does their world-building is simple and understated but it can’t be denied that it’s some of the most beautiful worldbuilding I’ve seen. And we’re not going to start on the prose part of their writing, because I will legitimately never stop talking about the way Ryn consistently puts in lines that just. Echo. In your brain. Like. It flows and it emotes and it’s perfect for the scenes, but then they just hit you with these specific parts that just stay in your heart for so long that they grow roots. I’m never not going to be in love with Ryn’s writing.
@junqkook - Yara is an ICON. Like. HOW she read something I wrote and thought it was good I still don’t know because I legitimately am floored every single time I read something by her. I’m pretty sure I’ve gone through her masterlist at least twice, and every single story is so unique and creative, even the ones that are inspired are published series, and I’m just. In awe. The characters she creates are always so varied and intriguing, and the worlds are so interesting and fascinating, and I am consistently envious of the way her work flows so smoothly and so naturally. It all has such a natural progression, the dialogue is genuine and real, and I’m just. I’m in awe. Literally in awe, I love it so much, and I can only hope that my shiny garbage can one day be like that.
@gukyi - i don’t think we’re actually mutuals, because I could only wish for someone like Guyi to know I exist, and the only reason I’m keeping the tag is bc she deserves all of the love and praise. If you want good fics, especially if you’re not one for the smut, then you really need to be following Guyi because the worlds she creates in her fics are absolutely astounding. Her entire HP au series is absolutely phenomenal and creative and stands out from every single hp au I’ve EVER read, which is rare because while they all tend to be good, they also all tend to be very similar because there’s only so much you can usually do in a hp au, and I haven’t read a single fic from her that I didn’t love. Victorious? Iconic, the worldbuilding she did to add onto HTTYD was phenomenal, and she blew the childhood friends to enemies to lovers trope out of the park. Her horror fics are some of the only ones I’ve read because they’re just that good. THE WEDDING PLANNERS? Truly iconic. I honestly WISH I could write like Guyi.
n - answered here
g | do you write your story from start to finish, or do you write the scenes out of order?
I’m a dumb bitch, so I have to write my story from start to finish. I tend to ramble in my notes about various scenes I want to include, and maybe some random notes about the relationship or their personalities, but like.
o - answered here
k | what’s the angstiest idea you’ve ever come up with?
That’s gOTTA be Forever Rain, like. I’m not usually an angst person, so I’m not super good at coming up with angst prompts, but Forever Rain is EASILY the most angsty thing I’ve ever come up with. I’m getting sad just writing it, like.
From Eden Alternate Ending
The aftermath of the fight with Demeter changes everything. Hoseok and Hades don’t see Yoongi before he gets dragged back to Olympus, which shouldn’t be possible in the first place, but Zeus has always tended to side with anyone who wasn’t the Queen of the Dead. No one is even sure Yoongi’s alright until Hermes comes down to tell them about Zeus’ decision, and Hoseok is pretty sure he’s never seen Hades angrier than that night. They haven’t spoken since, not really; he knows that she visits him when she thinks he’s asleep, knows that she runs her hands carefully through the air above his fractured wing even as she has to work to stitch her own body back together out of shadows and the memory of what hope felt like. The guilt shoves from her in waves, until it cloys in his throat and drowns out his own. Hades is focused on her own pain; how she should never have gone to Zeus, never have sought out what Yoongi was so afraid of, never trusted that Hoseok would be able to stay with him when Yoongi could convince anyone of anything. She doesn’t talk to anyone, doesn’t do anything but the work expected of her; the dead are piling up, slower than during Demeter’s rampage in the mortal world, but without Hoseok there to pass judgement, the Council is forced to, and they take far longer than he ever did, and she doesn’t know what she’s going to do because he was hurt because of her.
Hoseok, meanwhile, is on bedrest, forced to spread his wings over several chairs so that they stay put, so the bones don’t break further and they set correctly. He’s a god - one of the oldest gods - but Demeter knew what she was doing when she twisted his wings beneath her and laughed as they cracked. In this story, Hades does not talk to him softly as he heals; she’s too afraid to see the accusation in his eyes, the blame that does not exist. She doesn’t tell him that she thinks its her fault, so he isn’t able to convince her otherwise. He doesn’t shed any tears with her in the darkness, she doesn’t hear his whispered confession that he blames himself because if he’d stayed...if he hadn’t flown off to try to protect his queen then maybe, just maybe, Yoongi would still be there. He’d still be safe. She doesn’t wipe his tears with her thumb, she doesn’t press a gentle kiss to his cheek after asking for his forgiveness, he doesn’t slide his lips across her knuckles and tell her there’s nothing to forgive. Instead there’s only Hoseok, stuck in a room and in pain, wondering if he’s condemned Yoongi to death because he couldn’t follow orders.
In this universe, Hades is too afraid to send warnings to Olympus about what might happen to the dead if Yoongi returns hurt or upset. She doesn’t want to meddle more, doesn’t want to cause more damage to the flower god that she loves so much, doesn’t want to watch him crumple like the blossoms around her pomegranate tree. Can’t bear to think about where the golden drops that decorate the ground there came from, but can’t bear to have it covered, either. It’s a reminder, of just what happens when she gets too close. Of what happens when she lets herself forget that she carries Death on her fingertips and Tragedy in her footprints.
In this universe, when Yoongi returns, he isn’t waiting in her room to tell her that he loves her and Hoseok. He doesn’t hold her, doesn’t show her how much he missed her in those months. In this universe he comes back quiet and solitary. He doesn’t visit Hoseok at the gates anymore. Yoongi can’t bear the reminder of the pain he caused. This time, Yoongi stays in his room. He visits the tree and his flowers, tends to them until the remnants of his blood are visible no more and the only reminder of that night is the taste of pomegranate on his tongue. He doesn’t visit Hades, doesn’t make jokes with Hoseok, and neither of them seek him out, too ashamed or guilty or grief-stricken to be faced with the hope he holds in his very skin. None of them can bear it, so none of them do.
Hades stops wandering the Meadow. She doesn’t visit the gates, either, ignores the whines of Cerberus when he misses her, refuses to pass anywhere near the courtyard where the tree sits, surrounded by a kaleidoscope of color that she’s grown to hate. The smell of pomegranate surrounds her, as it always has, but it turns her stomach now more than ever. She cries more often than before, and no one notices.
Hoseok doesn’t let the Council take over again. There’s a backlog of spirits, that’s the excuse he sticks to, and there’s too much work to be done. He pets Cerberus when the dog whines, letting all three heads lick wounds in him that no one can see, and he pretends that it’s okay. He doesn’t look at the flower crown hanging on the peg nearby, pretends it’s not there and that it’s as faded and withered as the ones behind it. His judgments become harsher, less forgiving than they were, and people stop asking for them. He stands with the dog at his back and the anger on his face and pretends like he’s healed. He doesn’t acknowledge that more broke that night than just his wing. Or that it never really healed.
Yoongi doesn’t speak. He’s silent and steady in the darkness, hands moving on instinct. He misses Cerb, misses the way he would cajole Hoseok into judging more souls, misses the way Hades would smile as she worked on the flowers. But he knows better, now. His mother spent six months reminding just what would happen if he ran again, what would happen if he let himself think he was safe again. He has nothing else to do so he thinks, about what he should’ve done. How he shouldn’t have convinced Hoseok to leave, how he shouldn’t have been in the Meadow, how he shouldn’t have asked about the pomegranates, how he shouldn’t have gotten attached when he knew she wouldn’t let him stay. How he shouldn’t have run. The pile of flower crowns beside him grows with every day, and they mock him with their refusal to wither. They stay, bright and full and hopeful, a light in the dark of his room that refuses to go out. When he leaves to go back to his mother, he doesn’t take them with him.

Ep. 5: “Nothing to Report” - Jabari
JENNET
jennet vs ethan? more like jennet + ethan😀😀😉😉
(a little later)
plan was a success, i know thats right!

Somehow the Pennino vote worked, and Pennino if you are reading this, you really are an amazing guy, and I hope we get a second chance someday. That being said, you are too smart and self-aware, and that is dangerous. For this round, the reward challenge is interesting. I haven't met everyone in the game yet, so I don't know if people are looking at challenge results yet, and I have done my best to have middling performances, but winning this would mean I get put in the spotlight again for winning 2 individual rewards, so that potentially makes me nervous. More than anything, I want to avoid tribal, I don't think there would be a repeat of last time if we go again. I anticipate a swap in 1-2 more votes, either to 2 or 4 tribes. Video conf coming soon :D
JABARI
The girls and I flopped on the reward challenge and Ethan came up like a beast. I really feel out tribe of 5 is doing well and hopefully we can pull win and stay together. If not I Imagine Sam will be out, as for idol searches nothing to report though I feel I am getting close.

Me when I found the idol: :) Me when the hosts told me I had to gamble my vote like 13 times in order to get it: :( I really wish we’d lost now so Nicole could be out and I could have an idol! If we don’t swap next time and it’s there, I’m taking the idol and throwing the challenge. Then we can vote Nicole out and I can have an idol! Will my allies be suspicious that I didn’t vote at that tribal? Not if it’s unanimous for Nicole which you KNOW I’d be doing the work to make happen. If we do swap, I’ll probably go get the idol anyways UNLESS we swap to tribes of 5 and my tribe is bad. But even then, I might as well go get it because I could play it that round if I needed to. Um not much else happened this round! I hope we merge soon.

sorry ur getting text today ok im so fucin ajfdkhsakjlfhsalkjfhskjfhksjd i hate this anyways i think the tribe is split into two duos and then me - jennet and jabari /ethan and sam. pennino was kinda my duo but also eh. i think ethan has an idol or at the very least an advantage. a f r a i d not sure what to do. could stick w jennet and jabari and hope for the best or preemptively flip and try to make it w ethan and sam... i think there'll be a tribe swap soon but ajsfhsaldfhsdkj afraid if there's too few calumma come merge we'll be fucked but sokka pulled it off before it's not impossible we'll be okay depending. but if i piss off jennet or jabari calumma might not vibe w me following so i'll be stuck at the bottom of the totem pole w old not calumma and that's not a good spot to be either. :( my "lets do something fun" says lets flip fuck it, but my loyal ass/wants to make it to merge this game ass says sticking w calumma is my best bet. jabari was posting cryptic shit last night so im gonna lead into that and see what hapepns anyways fuck this tribal. fuck tribal. i love all of these people i dont want to vote them out like genuinely there's no one here i want to see gone i HATE THIS anyways if i flip on calumma id probably go jennet bc she's a bigger threat than jabari iirc and if i stay loyal i'd probably aim for ethan bc sam is the more obvious target i... think?

REALLY hoping we don't swap tonight...... that way I can instantly go get the idol! Or if we do swap, I hope I stay on Calumma. I think I should have actually just gone for the idol but I was worried about needing my vote at next tribal and not knowing what's ahead. Like imagine if I went for it, I lost my vote, and I only got the idol to be good for one round. Or for no rounds. It literally would have been useless and I would hate to swap and have no idol AND no vote. At least now if we swap, I definitely have one of those things! I'm not interested in gambling everything to get nothing so it just didn't seem like a smart choice. I did consider taking it and only gambling once just so Nicole definitely didn't get the idol but that didn't seem like a good idea. She only has like a 1/25 chance of finding it IF she's been guessing every single day and even if she does find it and we don't swap, my guess is Pete will want to throw his vote on Mikey which is fine with me because that is their relationship that will be affected, not mine. 24/25 odds Nicole has no idol is better than a 1/13 chance of losing my vote right? I'm honestly not sure as I still to this day cannot do any math <3 I have been saying this whole game I think we're going to swap at 15 into 3 tribes of 5 so hopefully I am wrong! And we swap at 14 or even better do not swap at all again until the merge. At least I will know who could have the idol if we swap. Narrowing this down is useful, as is knowing that the all 3 pre-merge tribe idols likely have expirations close to final 8/9 and probably aren't good until f5. Plus I'll get the chance to try and get another idol from a different tribe (or find out that someone else already has it too!). You may notice I didn't mention my other teammates in this confessional. Well that is because none of them are really here and nothing is going on since we've been winning. I have still been talking to Mikey and Pete on and off but Lovelis seems to be pretty busy so he hasn't been here. And Nicole...... has left me on read again. We just do not know what is going on there.
LOVELIS
WOO we won immunity!! I'm anticipating a swap soon so I'm tryna stay as cool with Mikey and Nicole as I can just in case I'm put on a tribe with them again, but I do hope I can stay with Shane or Jessica in the future because those two are the ones I get on with the most for sure, and I'd feel more comfortable moving forward on a tribe with them for now! I don't think Nicole has any trust in me after the Nash elimination so I'd be more weary if I had to work with her in order to save myself in the long run, but let's see what the future holds shall we!

Ok this tribal is terrifying. Apparently lindsay and jabari are trying to blindside me by telling me the vote is Sam, and this could be a super good bait from Jennet to try to get Sam to idol. If they’re playing logically, they vote Sam if that’s the case anyways. It wouldn’t make much sense for Jennet to spill, not vote with us, and vote for me, I hope these people are logical, because I’m operating under the assumption that they are.
MADISON
I honestly have to laugh at Shane messing up 2 times during the challenges, us having the lowest counting score, and still being immune at the end of the day. It's truly beautiful. Daisy won the reward so she will be attending the tribal tonight and I hope she can give us an idea of how the dynamics are on another tribe. It's hard when there hasn't really been much to do on Brookesia so having a little bit of info could go a long way in this game.
NICOLE
Hello! So we won. I was having a little bit of a hard time this round if I'm being honest so I'm glad we won immunity because I think I definitely would have hit the road if we did not. Logic puzzles are really gonna be my legacy in this game huh...anyway, I have been searching for idols everyday and have not found ANYTHING except a second guess which I already used to find nothing. Even worse it seems that everywhere I look something has already been found! Which means other people have things! Which stinks. But, I think I'm in a pretty good spot if we swap after this round. But if we stay on this tribe....yikes!
JENNET
super nervous, i have TWO alliances with the same name... hoping that helps me at tribal so when i say the name of it, both groups thinks its them😳😳
(a little later)
told ethan and sam what jabari and lindsay have planned for them... hoping it doesnt blow up in my face
(after searching for an idol)
was hoping to vote out lindsay bc shes been playing this like shes our leader but shes the stronger competitor and i dont want to push sam and ethan too much

i feel like this game is nonexistent lately...I do want to say Shane is lucky bc in the counting challenge he messes up like 2-3 times and i was like ...blinks.... idk but luckily we managed to escape tribal council once again so our odds going far and having numbers are pretty high I’d say? I feel like a swap is coming tho so I’m a bit nervous! My confessionals are gonna remain dry for now sorry mwah

PETE
I’m pretty sure Nicole may still get numbers against me when the time comes. I’m nervous for a merge but honestly i’ll be grateful if I even make it to one for the first time lmao like at this point I may have a few numbers but I’m hoping another struggling alliance picks Jessica and I up at the merge and we can rest in majority for a little bit at the start of it. I was thinking about maybe throwing one challenge so we can either A. Vote off Nicole who is a big threat and could do damage later on. or B. Vote off Mikey who could be a secret snake which could win a couple more trust points with Nicole and maybe pick up and ally there. I’m not sure. I did save Nicole in one light by redirecting my alliance’s target from her to Nash, but in another, I didn’t side with her in voting off Mikey so she lost her ally. It’s complex, I feel like throwing a challenge AND not throwing a challenge could both be the mistake I look back on when I get voted out later on. i dunno send help lmao

CHAPTER 10 - TRIXI
The great plains were a welcome change of scenery, or so Trixi had thought at first. Gone were the trees, the humid air and the critters that refused to go silent, but in its place had come endless miles of farmland and far too many rolling hills for his liking. As it evidently turned out, too much of any one thing was always a bad thing.
As they had exited the forests, the paths had become wider, so now the four of them walked roughly abreast, no longer limited to the single files of the dirt paths behind them. Out here, roads were indicated by real fences rather than the treelines, and they looked far more well-worn than the highway that they had abandoned.
“These marks are fresh.” Trixi knelt down to touch the road, observing two long indents in the road, indicative of a caravan train passing through. Small portions of dirt had been kicked up, possibly from horses pulling carts. “Maybe half a day old, or even newer.”
“How can you tell?” Jirei knelt down next to him, staring at the soil. ”What do you see?”
“It’s his smell, not his sight,” came Ruzuli from the side, leaning against a fence and drinking out of her flask. She stood on one leg, propping the other up on the fence, looking as casual as possible. She pointed to the side of the road, and Trixi watched Jirei’s face turn from curiosity to disgust, as her gaze met a steaming pile of dung, complete with straw sticking out of it and the unmistakable smell of fetid waste. She hastily turned away, much to the amusement of the dragonling. Trixi almost felt bad. Finding out what happened required an analysis of all factors, and sometimes those factors were unsightly.
Octavia clapped her hands and cleared her throat loudly, bringing their attention over to her. She pointed out the sun, still hanging high in the air. “We’re approaching the solstice, so the days are getting longer. We should use the light while we still can.” A chorus of nods confirmed she was making the right choice, and before long, Trixi joined his team, walking side by side as they progressed through the endless grassy plains.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The setting sun coated the fields with a warm orange light, illuminating the wheat stalks and wild grasses alike, with a lone hill breaking up the monotony of the flat sprawling lands. And at the peak of the hill sat four individuals, lying prone in the tall grass, staring at a circle of caravans parked in a grass patch by the road. They lacked a spyglass, so to scout out the men below they would have to rely on their natural senses. With their naked eyes, they could make out some horses grazing, and a campfire already made, but could make out little else. As small grey wisps floated above the makeshift camp, they deliberated their next moves.
“Caravans painted red, white and green. Council colours. Probably official business,” Jirei reported from her spot in the grass.
Trixi stood up and brushed off some spiky seeds that had jabbed themselves into his jacket. “Should we approach them?”
“I say we do,” said Octavia. “They might know something about the happenings around the country that we don't. We're going into Shuyong blind, and I'm not a huge fan of that.”
“I say we don't,” countered Ruzuli. “You know the goblin bandits are coming from the east, don't you? For all you know it could be a trap!”
“Or it could prove immensely useful.”
The two briefly debated before Jirei broke them up. Trixi was honestly amazed at how fast she got them both to settle down and plan a tactical middle ground.
They decided to approach them, but with a fair amount of caution, and before the sun went down. They wouldn't brandish their weapons, or blatantly prepare for a fight, but they would keep on edge as they walked down the dirt road, eyes peeled for any dangers. They were just metres away from the ring of caravans when someone stepped out from behind one of them.
“Halt!” The word both relieved and surprised them, as they slowed to a standstill to meet the elvish guard that stood before them. Dressed in reds and greens, his chain mail almost glowed against the setting sun. He held his pike firmly planted in the ground, but Trixi knew from the way he wielded it that he could strike with it in a heartbeat. “State your purpose!”
Jirei stepped forward to act as their representative. “We are just travelers, and we mean you no harm.” She removed her hood, revealing her Elf features. “Headed to Shuyong, just like the rest of you.”
The guard removed his helmet, setting his short black hair free. He bowed once and began to speak, although it seemed like he only wished to address his kin. “My name is Feng, and I'm in charge of guarding this caravan train. It's brave of you to be travelling so far in these treacherous times,” pausing to flash a wary stare at the other three, before continuing, “Especially with foreigners.”
“Mercenary?” Ruzuli butted in, clearly displeased.
“I prefer the term ‘security expert’.” His response was bland and flat, a far cry from the amicable expression he had given Jirei.
Trixi didn't like his gruff expression, nor his arrogance. He had known elves were a proud people, but never to the extent of blatantly looking down on others. He much preferred the elves back in the Chalice, where forced interaction between the numerous races of the continent quickly knocked down elves like him down a couple of pegs.
Feng turned back to the circle of caravans, pointing at a large pot in the center. “Help yourself, we've got plenty of food. You're welcome to stay, and it's safer in numbers anyway.”
“Thank you for your hospitality.” Jirei was clearly uncomfortable too, fidgeting about, unhappy about her teammates treatment. But she remained composed, bowing in respect. Ever the diplomat, he thought, remaining silent for the time being. “We will not forget this gesture.”
“Just watch yourselves around here,” he warned. “I might not mind outsiders too much, but there are some with far more...radical views on what to do with your kind. The passengers might be merchants, but they’ll end you in a heartbeat if you so much as look at them the wrong way. We’re far from the cities; out here no one cares if one or two people go missing.”
As Feng boldly strode away, Jirei immediately hung her head in shame. “I apologise,” she mumbled. “Not all of us are like him. They spend so long within the walls of the Alliance, they forget the rest of the world exists.”
“Do not hang your head in shame, Jirei.” Ruzuli had placed a hand on her shoulder. “Raise it in pride instead. Be proud that you are not like him.”
“I, u-uh,” Jirei stammered, not quite sure how to respond, taking a few moments to think. “Thanks?”
“We should be the ones thanking you. You're ten times the elf he'll ever be.”
Trixi watched as the red flushed in in an instant, standing out against her light brown skin, and she looked down once more, this time in embarrassment rather than shame. But even as she looked down, the smallest of smiles seeped across her face.
As they walked over to the large pot, they were greeted by a lone dwarf, sitting on a wooden stool. Trixi was secretly glad to have met someone shorter than he was, and greeted him back.
“Rare to see this many foreigners this deep into the Alliance.” The dwarf cradled a small wooden bowl, filled with a savoury stew, complete with chunks of carrots and potatoes.
“Rarer still to see one traveling with elves, no?” Trixi sat down next to him and retrieved his own bowl. Apart from him, everyone else had already begun to scoop their own portions.
“Ah, but they need me. Special talents mean I get special treatment.”
“And what would that talent be?”
He motioned for Trixi to lean in, and whispered, “Guns.”
Trixi didn't know what that word meant, but he was sure it sounded mysterious. “What’s a gun?”
He shook his head and muttered something about how he knew they should have changed the name. “Handcannons,” he explained. “Imagine half the explosive power of a cannon, fitting in your hand, with a fraction of the weight and cost. I'll be bringing the very first shipment of these new weapons all the way to Shuyong. I'd show you one, but its secret and confidential.”
“And you are?”
“Harlin,” he said. “Master Inventor and head of the Dwarven Armoury.” Master Kris might have discovered the formula for creating whitepowder many years ago, but it had been the dwarves who had pushed it to its maximum potential. Their penchant for mass production had lead to widespread usage of their various inventions. While two decades ago cannons were only seen aboard dwarven vessels, now they were a staple of defensive strategies, mounted on ships and castle walls alike all over the continent. Only the Chalice held out, refusing to install the revolutionary weaponry.
“I'm Trixi, and my team's headed to Shuyong to do some adventuring. Some artifact to be retrieved.” Trixi had scooped some soup for himself and had hastily slurped it down. After eating cold dry rations for a week, the hot food was a welcome change.
They traded tales of their homelands, of the contraptions they had once made, eating together as the sun set behind the hills, exchanging places with the moon.
“So, how long has your party been on the road?” Trixi managed to get the words out while finishing off his third bowl of soup.
Harlin’s eyes skirted to the left and right, before dropping to a whisper. “Truth be told, we've been traveling two weeks, but we haven't moved from here in three days.”
“Oh?”
“You can say that again. The one that’s in charge? He don't want to cross the Citrasa. Something about goblins.”
“Goblins?” Trixi knew that there were goblins to the east, but nothing too threatening. They could barely rob a couple of travelers, let alone a large caravan train with a good number armed guards.
“Goblins indeed. Personally, I think he’s just paranoid. Whatever the case, we've got to make it to Shuyong by the solstice, or we'll miss out on the Festival of Ava. So goblins or not, we'll be leaving in the morning. You and your mage party are welcome to join us.”
In response to Trixi’s shocked look, he let out a hearty laugh. “What, you think just because I'm short means I'm stupid? Your elf friend’s staff gave it away, not to mention the human’s essence constantly being activated. Tell her to knock it off, it's scaring the horses.” As Trixi walked away to inform Octavia that her magic had been detected, he heard more laughing from behind him.
When Trixi returned, visibly shaken, he received a friendly punch from Harlin. “Relax, I won't tell a soul.”
“Promise?” After Octavia had been exposed, her essence had been deactivated, but she nevertheless shot death stares over at the two men talking. “They barely like us, imagine what they'll do when they find out we're magic users.”
“Nothing, I imagine.”
“Nothing?” Trixi tilted his head to his side, idly twirling hair with his index finger.
“Council colours don't mean council rules, boy.” He shook a small stick he had strapped to his belt and it extended into a cane, using it to help himself up off the stool. It was only then that Trixi noticed Harlin’s oddly bent right ankle. He hobbled up, and used his free hand to point at the caravans around him.
“Paperwork says we're carrying weapons and armour. Resupply mission for Shuyong’s defence force.” He rapped his knuckles against the wood, giving it a satisfying thwack. He chuckled to himself before sitting back down.
“But you look in those caravans, and you'll find a whole slew of other goods too. Oranges. Pork cuts from the western mountains. Tea leaves from the south.”
“They’re smuggling tea leaves?”
The dwarf collapsed his cane and snapped it back onto his belt. “You’d be surprised how much they tax these premium goods. The council doesn't pay much to move their stuff around, so we make do.” He stared at the fire, seemingly transfixed by the dancing flames. “Get some rest, kid. If you want to follow us, we leave at dawn. Now if you'll excuse me, I have some stargazing to do.” Without moving from his spot, he flipped himself onto his back, and began to watch the skies. Trixi silently excused himself and ran over to join the rest, already sitting in a circle on their bedrolls.
The moment he sat down, Ruzuli and Octavia began to vent. Octavia was still uneasy that he had so easily unearthed their true identities, and made no effort to hide it. She glared at the dwarf the same way a warrior glared at his mortal nemesis, intense and full of rage. Not for the first time, Trixi was glad he was on her side.
“I don't like him.”
“Well, I don't like anyone here.”
“You don't like anyone, ever.”
“Rude.”
“Enough.” Jirei's lone word was gentle but firm, quickly silencing the squabbling duo. “Trixi, you were the only one to speak to him. Can we trust him?”
He gulped. Harlin wasn't completely honest, but didn't seem like he was out to harm anyone. “Y-yeah, we can.”
“Good. Did they mention when they'll be crossing the river?”
“Tomorrow, we'll make it there by midday. Harlin told me so.”
“Harlin?”
“The dwarf,” Trixi explained. “He said the leader of the caravan think there are goblins nearby. They've been delaying the crossing due to it.”
“Bad choice.” Ruzuli propped up her arm with an upright knee, with her other leg flat on the ground. “If the goblins really are here, then the best tactical choice should be to just rush through. Every day they spend here is more time for the enemy to gather their forces, to scout out our defences.”
“Indeed, and I suspect the same.” Jirei pressed her palms together, and when she pulled them apart, a lattice of green vines hung in the air, loosely connected to her fingertips. “Using these vines, I sensed a large collective of lifeforms to the northeast of us.”
“Really? I didn't sense a thing.” Octavia had crossed her arms and folded her legs, bending herself halfway to a human pretzel. “Or is my understanding of druidic powers flawed?”
“Well, about that...” Trixi watched the druid grind to an awkward halt. She tapped her index fingers against each other a few times, before speaking again. “It's a new technique that my teacher taught me. It's not very precise about location, but if it senses something, it's there.”
“So...we should be prepared for a battle on the bridge?” Trixi said, trying to break up any tension within the group. “It’s a clear bottleneck, and once we're on the bridge it's hard to get off it quickly.”
They would spend some more time discussing possibilities and general strategies about how to defend the large caravan train, before agreeing to retire for the night.
As Trixi lay in his bedroll, staring at the few stars that dotted the sky, only one thought consumed his mind. When his master had discovered the explosive powder, she had been reluctant to publish her findings. She argued that many would find a way to abuse its destructive power, but was ultimately convinced by her peers. It would be better to inform the world of it than keep it a secret and wait for another party with far more malicious intents to wreak havoc. Now that the havoc wreaking weaponry could fit in one's hands, as Harlin claimed, that danger had grown tenfold. Too many stray thoughts cluttered his already busy mind, and it drained his energy away. Within the minute, his eyelids would shut for the evening.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Trixi did not need to rely on any rooster to rouse him from his sleep, or even his internal alarm. Instead, Feng, the elf guard from the previous day, roamed about the camp at the crack of dawn, ringing a large bell repeatedly, waking every single traveler up. “Thirty minutes!” Feng hollered in the air. “Thirty minutes and we leave!” Evidently, the rest of the travellers were already used to this routine, as they roamed over to a large barrel of water to begin to freshen up.
“Good morning,” he groaned, but no one responded. He sat upright, and realized his teammates had not only already awoken, but were already ready to leave, sitting around the fire.
“How nice of you to join us.” Ruzuli said, failing to stifle her own smile.
“No one woke me up?” He ruffled his hair, allowing it to settle into its natural mess.
“No one dared interrupt your sleep, lest they incurred your wrath.”
“Very funny.”
“She’s not wrong,” Jirei said, holding a bowl of oatmeal. “You snore like a horn.”
Trixi groaned and fell back into his bedroll. It was going to be a long day ahead. Eventually, he had to leave the warmth of his bedroll behind and get up, preparing for the travels ahead.
After precisely thirty minutes, Feng indeed gave the command to move off, ringing a series of bells mounted on the front car to convey it. The caravans were arranged in a particular order to improve security. At both ends were the cars containing the food and other assorted essentials for traveling. They were crucial, but in the event of an attack they would be the first to be abandoned. Next were the cars containing the armaments, stuffed with the premium goods to sell when they arrived in the city. And at the very heart of the train, sandwiched between eight other cars, was the one carrying Harlin’s deadly cargo. Feng and his other guards knew that if it came down to it, they would have to defend that car with their lives. Under no circumstance could the revolutionary weapons fall into anyone else’s hands.
Trixi observed the uniquely Elven manner of pulling their cars. Instead of a horsemaster and whips, like others might use, they instead employed rangers, users of green essence who were more attuned to animals in nature. They could quickly create a bond to the horses, and give them the commands needed, with only a simple pair of reins to communicate. He noted that all the rangers that sat at the front of the wooden carts were also dressed in the colours of the Elven Council. They clearly took their transportation very seriously.
Most of the passengers would be walking alongside the caravans, with only a select privileged few being able to sit in them, Harlin being part of that group. He waved goodbye to Trixi as he awkwardly went up the steps, disappearing into a cabin. As for Trixi, he had been placed at the rear, alongside Ruzuli, Jirei and Octavia. Feng reasoned that if they had travelled all this way without any help, then they should be able to handle themselves.
Most of their fellow travelers steered clear of the strange new companions, so they walked alone, right beside the very last car. Trixi watched as a horse began to neigh loudly, walking erratically, and the ranger instinctively calmed it down, sending green essence flowing into his reins. The horse quickly fell silent, and continued its march.
As the cars set off from their encampment, with two horses pulling each one along, Trixi stared at the map. The Citrasa was nearly half a day's walk away from them, and would be the final major checkpoint before they reached Shuyong. Unfortunately for Trixi, the view remained unchanging, barring the occasional lone tree sitting by the roadside, leaving him nothing to focus his mind on. Instead, he thought of their ultimate goal that day, to cross the Citrasa.
Unarguably the most famous river in all of Sagure, Trixi had seen the Citrasa depicted in countless texts and paintings. Spanning the entire length of the continent, from all the way in the northern Fang Plateau, before flowing south. It rested briefly to form Lake Kaerin, and split to form two separate rivers further down its length. Beyond the fork, they were simply referred to as the Southern and Eastern Citrasa, described simply with its direction.
As he walked in silence, he tuned into the conversation going on ahead of him.
“Ruzuli, would you stop touching your hilt?”
“It makes me feel safe.”
“You know what's safe? Any scenario where you don't have to use your sword.”
“Hmpf. Fine.” Ruzuli awkwardly jammed right hand into one of the numerous pockets that lined her shirt, while Octavia beamed on, with a mocking smile specially reserved for her.
“You know, this exact conversation has happened before.” Jirei waggled a finger in the air, waving it playfully as Ruzuli continued to sulk.
“Not a surprise,” Octavia said. “She doesn't strike me as the type to change that easily.”
“I am literally right here.” Ruzuli pursed her lips, angrily glaring at the two girls mocking her. Trixi swore he could see invisible puffs of smoke floating from her nostrils, like the flame-breathing dragons of yore.
A sudden flash filled the sky, followed moments later by a low rumble. “Not me,” Ruzuli whispered, as grey clouds rolled in, the sudden storm approaching from ahead. Before anyone could respond, three high-pitched bells rang out. The command for haste.
All along the caravan train, nine sets of reins began to glow as the rangers compelled their steeds to accelerate. Brisk walks were discarded for jogs as they picked up speed, racing towards the bridge, now ever nearing. A fierce wind had picked up, buffeting them as they struggled to keep pace with the train. Further away, a sea of fog had seemed to form, riding on the winds. Within minutes, it would reach them, robbing them of the sense of sight. Nevertheless, the train pressed on. If Feng was to be deterred by the surprise storm, he was not showing it.
Trixi’s footsteps went from making short, muted sounds to loud rickety clacks, as he set foot on the wooden bridge. By this point, the fog had all but consumed them, with only the occasional lightning strike lighting up the sky. This should have been the time to appreciate the way they had constructed the flat wood bridge, to admire the Elven carvings on the side, or the olden style of architecture, but the urgency of their pace robbed Trixi of this chance.
Two low pitched bells brought the command this time, slowing the entire train down to a halt. For a moment, all was still in the misty silence.
“What the-”
“Why are we stopped?”
Trixi heard the murmurs float over from other passengers, and began to think. Feng was a tactical man, and surely had his reasons. Still, he would like to know what was going on. Most of the people travelling were not strong fighters, and already they were looking around nervously, waiting for an answer. Trixi had to admit, it was making him antsy too.
“Can you do anything about the mist?” Trixi said, asking Ruzuli for aid. “Surely you know some kind of trick to beat it back.”
“The mist is as intangible as it gets,” she responded. “I’m not very good at using light-based spells. Octavia?”
“Something’s not right.” She murmured.
“What?”
“I said something’s not right. There’s a lot of essence being used somewhere. North? North-east?” Her eyes began to glow white. “I’m going to try to get a better read on that.”
Trixi felt a faint rumble in the earth. He had spent many years studying the ways of geomancy, but this was no earth tremor. This was something large, and it was coming for them. The rumbling grew stronger, and in an instant, a large wooden cart burst out from behind them, making all sorts of unearthly noises as it trundled towards them. A small team of goblins ran alongside it, pushing it barrelling towards the rear train, just over twenty metres away. Trixi saw the whitepowder that filled it to the brim, and with a look of horror, realized their plan.
But before he could shout a warning, Ruzuli shot forth a wide cone of flame, trading accuracy for raw power. The moment it so much as touched the cart, it instantly ignited, exploding with such force that it ripped the bridge apart, leaving a gaping hole where it had once been. The shockwave knocked Ruzuli back, surprised by the aftermath of her own power, while Trixi was forced onto one knee, bending down to endure the blast. When the wreckage had settled, the white smoke of the explosive powder mixing with the fog.
“Was that it?” Jirei whispered in a quiet voice.
As if responding to her question, another explosion rocked the bridge, this time far louder, and far more violent than the one they had just witnessed. They turned to see that a similar attack had been carried out on the front of the train, reducing one car to splinters and setting another ablaze.
To add insult to injury, the fog that had plagued them suddenly fell away, as if it had served its purpose and now bade goodbye. That in itself should have been shocking, but more shocking still were the two large ships, sailing full speed at the bridge, having cleverly used the fog to set up an ambush. Aboard the ships, goblins hung off every rope and every sail, brandishing weapons and itching for a bloodbath. So their suspicions were right. Damn it all. Right on cue, the high pitched bell broke into a frenzy, ringing over and over and over again, rousing the guards to their stations.
No path ahead, no path behind, and no escape for the besieged caravan. The battle on the bridge was about to begin.

pint-size potential (1/?)
Sod the Council and their archaic concepts of what made a child worthy. He was given a job to do, and he would do it, but he would do it his way.
(au: Buffy's a baby Potential, and Giles is her new Watcher)
ao3
tagging @theforestlesbian and @sih bc u nerds supported me writing this & i love u both bunches
In comparison to England, California was unbearably hot. Giles was fairly certain that he was assigned this particular location just because someone in the Council hated him. No respectable Watcher wanted an American Potential to raise, let alone a Potential in the middle of the bloody desert. Merrick had initially been assigned to the child, but then that four-year-old Potential had cropped up in England, and no one else wanted to relocate to America to raise a baby.
So of course, the job went to Giles, the black sheep of the Council. He’d been working with them for long enough to merit the responsibility of training a Potential, though he had always imagined said Potential being a bit—older. Old enough to talk, certainly. Baby Potentials didn’t generally last that long, what with all the demons and vampires attempting to kill them—and bugger all, that was probably why he was being sent to care for this one. Giles did miss the days when Potentials were harder to find.
Tentatively, Giles entered the café, quietly surveying the room. A gaggle of giggly college girls wearing sweaters in similar shades of pink. A young couple who looked to be out on a date. A neat-looking middle-aged woman, standing primly next to a baby stroller. Ah, thought Giles, and crossed the room. “Ms. Smythe?” he inquired.
The woman looked critically at him, then said, “I do hope you’re qualified for this sort of rigor, Mr. Giles. Infant Potentials are a particularly serious responsibility.” Giles tried to look into the stroller, but Ms. Smythe moved in front of him, adding, “To be blunt, the Council has assigned you to this child due to your particularly unsavory past. We believe that, if nothing else, you are at least suited to defend this child from harm until she is old enough to do so herself.”
This was thoroughly unnerving to Giles, who hadn’t thrown a punch in years. But he hadn’t bought a plane ticket and flown down to this hellishly sunny city just to go straight back with nothing to show for it, so he said coolly, “I can assure you that I am fully capable of protecting the Potential.”
“Good,” said Ms. Smythe. “We shall expect reports on her well-being.” Handing him a file folder, she added, “All the information you need—addresses, phone numbers—it’s in there. The keys to your home are in the pocket of the Potential’s baby stroller.”
“Thank you,” said Giles, who wasn’t at all looking forward to living in Los Angeles. It seemed like some deeply tragic parody of an American sitcom—single father living alone in the big city, except the father wasn’t a father and the baby was one in a long line of possible preternaturally strong vampire killers. He took the folder from Ms. Smythe. Then, stepping neatly around her, he looked down into the stroller.
The Potential, the little girl he was now tasked with guarding until adulthood, was wearing a pink-and-blue striped onesie and bundled in one of the standard Council baby blankets. She was wearing a small hat and little mittens, one of which seemed to be missing, and she was fast asleep.
“What’s her name?” Giles inquired softly.
“That’s hardly relevant, is it?” Ms. Smythe sounded a bit exasperated. “Right now, your responsibility is to bring the Potential to your new apartment and make sure that the proper magical wards are placed to keep her safe.”
“But—”
“As I’ve said, all the information you need is in the folder,” said Ms. Smythe shortly. “Kindly do not dawdle, Mr. Giles.”
Giles pressed his lips together, taking the stroller and carefully wheeling it out of the café. He didn’t look back at Ms. Smythe; he hoped that he wouldn’t have to see her again.
About five feet from Giles’s car, there was a slight dip in the sidewalk, which jostled the stroller ever so slightly. This woke the Potential, who took one look at Giles and immediately started to cry.
Ah, yes, Giles thought. This is exactly what a headache feels like. Wheeling the stroller over to his car, he deposited the file folder in the front seat and carefully lifted the Potential out of the stroller. She cried harder.
“Shh,” said Giles awkwardly, trying to bounce the Potential a bit. “There now. We’re off to a new apartment.” Opening the other car door, he placed the sobbing Potential in the baby seat, thought for a moment, then found the file folder again, flipping through it. “Buffy Summers?” he repeated. “Good lord, do all Americans name their children like this?”
The Potential wailed.
Giles hesitated, then took her back out of the car seat. “Well,” he said, holding the Potential—Buffy—so that she was facing him. “Buffy Summers. I-I expect we’ll have to get used to each other, or this will be a very difficult arrangement for both of us, all right?”
Buffy spit up on his jacket.
Giles had had experience with much more toxic and potentially fatal substances (coming into contact with many different kinds of demons did happen to also mean coming into contact with many different kinds of bloods, fluids, and secretions), but no one—child or otherwise—had ever spit up on his good tweed jacket. Thoroughly upset, Giles was tempted to buckle Buffy back up into her car seat and just drive home without any other clumsy attempts at comfort; it was clear he wasn’t suited for this, anyway, and Watchers weren’t supposed to be comforting—
Then Giles looked down at Buffy. She had very wide, teary grey eyes, and looked just about as distressed as he felt. That wasn’t a Council-approved baby hat, Giles realized, and the outfit she was wearing most definitely wasn’t picked for her by the Council. It seemed very likely that Buffy’s mother had given her to the Council fairly recently—perhaps even today.
“Oh,” said Giles softly. For the first time, he felt a strange twist of sympathy and sadness. Most parents gave up their children willingly after some sort of traumatic incident or attack, and he did remember hearing that his Potential’s mother had nearly been attacked by a particularly clever vampire. But what struck him most about the situation was that Buffy knew none of this. All that she knew—all that she could know—was that she’d woken up without her mother there. “There now,” he said softly, and this time he genuinely did want to comfort her. “It’s all right.”
Buffy sniffled, still looking somewhat distressed.
Carefully, Giles removed his handkerchief from his front pocket, dabbing gently at Buffy’s face. “You’re tired, aren’t you?” he inquired gently. “I woke you up. I’m sorry about that.” Strangely, he felt that Buffy was on some sense aware of the change in his voice, because she seemed to be calming down. “Let’s get you to the apartment,” he said, placing her carefully in the baby seat and strapping her in. “You can rest there, and I,” he shrugged off his jacket, folding it carefully before placing it in the front seat, “will perhaps wash my jacket.”
In the baby seat, Buffy rubbed her cheek with her fist and looked at him with a forlorn expression. Giles shut her car door, packed up the stroller, and got into the car himself, making sure that the radio was at a low volume before flipping it on. He turned it to a station with classical music, looking back at Buffy. “How’s that?” he inquired.
Buffy whimpered.
“No?” Completely by accident, Giles changed the radio station to a peppy American pop station. “Oh, good lord,” he muttered, and was about to change it again when he saw that Buffy looked—not quite happy, but at least a bit calmer. “Right,” he said, dryly amused. “Well, you’re very clearly an American.”
Buffy made a sleepy hmm noise and rested her cheek against the side of the baby seat.
Giles hesitated, thinking, then rummaged in the satchel that he’d tucked under the front seat, finding the small, raggedy baby blanket that Buffy’s mother had given to the Council for her to keep. He had been instructed to keep the blanket only for when Buffy had been a quiet, well-behaved baby, but—Buffy was too small to really understand that, and he was beginning to realize how many parts of this arrangement were thoroughly unfair to her.
“Here,” he murmured, turning into the backseat and holding the blanket out to Buffy. She snatched it from him immediately, holding it very tightly and looking at him with bright, wide eyes. “Let’s go to the apartment, shall we?”
The “apartment” actually turned out to be a rather nice two-bedroom house. Giles supposed that this spoke to the fact that many of the Council members had old money. There was a rather nice living room, a sunny, well-lit kitchen, a study, and then two bedrooms upstairs. Giles’s room was quite lovely—olive green wallpaper, a comfortable bed, an easy chair by the window—and seeing it made him feel a bit better about the whole situation. He could imagine living here.
Buffy’s room was sparsely decorated, with only a small crib and a set of drawers. The walls were painted an unpleasant off-white that made the room feel clinical and lifeless.
“Absolutely not,” said Giles flatly, Buffy in his arms, and walked them both back to his bedroom.
Buffy, now well rested and significantly more cheerful, tried to grab his glasses. Something about that made Giles feel very happy—he didn’t like the thought of her being a miserable, afraid child in this house, though that seemed to be what the Council was encouraging. Gently, he removed her tiny hand from his face, placing her down in the middle of the bed.
“Stay here,” he said, and then began the arduous task of moving the crib from Buffy’s bedroom to his.
How on earth single parents managed to do things like this, Giles could not and would never understand. Not to mention that it was very clear that the Council had arranged the furniture in his room in such a way that it would be incredibly difficult to find space for a crib there, but Giles refused to be discouraged. With Buffy half-watching, half-staring-with-interest-at-the-ceiling, Giles managed to remove the easy chair from his bedroom, shove it into Buffy’s room, and place the crib by the window where the chair had been. Exhausted, he collapsed onto the bed.
Buffy rolled over and into his side, looking curiously up at him.
“You’re right,” said Giles blearily, “it is quite a nice ceiling,” and fell asleep.
The nap only ended up lasting five minutes, because Buffy attempted to take off his glasses again, which woke Giles up. He did feel a bit better, though; awake enough to pick up Buffy and place her in the crib with her baby blanket. She began to chew on one of the edges.
Giles went back into the awful white room (eventually it would be Buffy’s room, he decided, as soon as it had a better coat of paint) and opened the drawers, looking through the baby clothing. They were all very plain, monochromatic items, lots of small white socks and beige onesies and a set of gray pajamas he supposed Buffy could wear to bed that night. None of the colors seemed to suit a baby who liked pop music and had a bright pink blanket dotted with rainbow hearts.
“I shall have to go shopping,” Giles said to himself, and shut the drawer he was looking through. This room really was incredibly off-putting.
Re-entering his room, he found Buffy lying on her back and looking significantly less interested in the ceiling. He lifted her up and out of the crib, walking her back downstairs so that they could get a better look at the rest of the house. There was a cheap, barely-functional high chair in the kitchen, and no baby food in the refrigerator—honestly, the Council’s inability to understand the needs of a growing child was becoming clearer by the second.
The study was full of the boxes that Giles had sent for from England. He could work on unpacking tomorrow; it seemed as though today would be spent writing up a shopping list for Buffy, whose tiny hand was now tightly curled around a fistful of his shirt. When Giles looked down at her, Buffy held up her baby blanket, all but shoving it in his face.
“You like pink, I’d wager,” Giles quipped.
Buffy looked at him with the quiet solemnity that Giles had only ever seen on very small children, then draped the blanket over his head.
Giles looked over the file folder that night, Buffy now clad in the awful gray Council pajamas and asleep in her crib. A few papers on job options, a few maps of his neighborhood, an emergency phone list, and a neatly printed information sheet regarding Buffy. Buffy Anne Summers, it read, aged five months, unlikely Slayer status.
Unlikely Slayer status.
Something in Giles twisted very hard at that. This wasn’t any kind of great responsibility; this was a lost-cause Watcher raising a lost-cause Potential just because the Council didn’t have anywhere else to put them both. He’d given up his life in England for this, all to take care of a girl who might never get called in the first place. A girl who could have lived with her mother for longer than just a few months, if not for the Council’s foolish determination to keep tabs on every single possible Slayer in the world.
He placed the information sheet down and left the bedroom, angry and hurt and tired and sad all in one. He’d thought that there was some reason that justified his new status as Buffy’s caregiver, but it was abundantly clear what the Council thought of both of them.
Downstairs, the phone rang. Giles ran a hand through his hair, then went to answer it.
“Mr. Giles.” Travers sounded more bored than anything. “I’m calling to make sure that you have arrived safely in Los Angeles. Is the Potential with you?”
Giles was starting to like the word Potential less and less. It felt like more of a trap than a word. How many girls were stolen away from their families, raised for a calling that might never even be theirs in the first place? It might have been one thing if he’d been greeted with a girl old enough to talk and laugh and tell him what she thought of the whole affair, but Buffy was never even given a choice about her life being turned upside down. Buffy was too young to even understand that her life had been turned upside down.
“Mr. Giles?”
“Yes,” said Giles heavily. “The Potential is with me.”
“Excellent,” said Travers somewhat indifferently. “I am assuming you have read the documentation we provided you with?”
“I have.” Giles didn’t trust himself to say anything more than that.
“Then you will understand why we will not be requiring monthly reports,” Travers informed him. “A Potential who is less likely to be Called is of less relevance to the Council at this juncture, though that may change as time goes on. You shall send us a written summary of the Potential’s development each year.”
“I understand.” The jumble of emotions had settled down to a less specific “awful.”
“Thank you. Good day.” There was a click, and then the dial tone sounded.
Giles hung up the phone and sat down on the couch. It stung, to be cast aside, but more than that—the child upstairs, entrusted to his care simply because she wasn’t of relevance to the Council and he wasn’t of any use to anyone. What sort of a caretaker could he be to her if the Council thought so little of him?
For the first time in a very long while, Giles felt acutely aware of the absences in his life. It had been a long time since he’d felt himself a part of something, and even his involvement with the Council couldn’t erase the fact that there was no one who could tell him that he was suited for this position.
No one but himself, really.
Well. There was one more person in his life now, and—and Giles wanted to do right by her. Sod the Council and their archaic concepts of what made a child worthy. He was given a job to do, and he would do it, but he would do it his way.
Giles pulled himself up off the couch, climbed the stairs, and entered his bedroom, studying the small girl in the crib. “Unlikely Slayer status,” he said softly, and brushed a gentle hand across the top of Buffy’s head. “Well, then, I suppose it doesn’t matter whether I raise you according to Council standards, does it?”

Lazy People’s Club for the Sleepy and Tired | 7
blooming | into the light
Pairings: Noctis/Reader Genre: Friendship/Romance/Friends-to-Lovers Tags: Fluff, Humor, Eventual Romance, Slow Burn, and an inappropriate amount of references to video games and classical music and literature titles, no beta we die like men ;;v;; pre-canon a.k.a before FFXV Chapter Rating: T Crossposted on: AO3 Summary: Rules to join the Lazy People’s Club for the Sleepy and Tired: 1) One must love sleep. Sleep is love. Sleep is life. 2) One must be tired. Physically or emotionally, both are acceptable. 3) One must love video games. Halfhearted interest in video games will result in immediate termination of membership.
Fortunately, Noctis falls into all three categories.
CHAPTER SUMMARY: in which noctis takes a nap with his new friend
SOME WOULD CALL IT A childish fight. A hug, a peck on the cheek, and all that’s left is for you to make up with him. Yet, the thought crossing your head isn’t one of apology, not that you had anything to apologise for. Byron’s transgression is expected for one such as him, and you were long beleaguered by his critical dissection of your decaying life.
“You don’t even know how to love to begin with.”
You repeated his choice of words, knowing they were uncalled for.
The very same words Byron uttered, a callous weight to the sentence. Somehow, it sounded stupid for some reasons. Logically thinking about it, all human beings are capable of loving, wanting to love, and yearning to be loved in return. And love takes form not only as eros, the romanticism portrayed in novels of passionate rapture; ludus spoke of the playful love between two persons, agape represents the universal and unconditional love, and philia—the mutual friendship, the bond you now share between the prince and his excitable companion.
They, too, are forms of love.
And you are capable of loving them just as much as you loved everyone else.
Just thinking about your butler’s cryptic words hurt your head. Your half-eaten lunch of ham-and-egg sandwiches lay in a plate on your table, but you’ve long lost the appetite for it. Not when your head’s all wrapped up in thoughts of Byron, Byron and his dismissive nature, Byron and his stupid long ponytail, Byron and the icy glaciers in his murky eyes. Byron who tucks you in your bed once upon a time, Byron who coddles you with books and ribbons and food, Byron who takes you by your chin and whispers into your ear that you’re not made for this, you’re not made for loving, you’re not meant to be loved—
you were not born out of love
—ah.
Father is in your head again.
You bury your face in your arms, slumped over your work table in a helpless heap. Father and salt-and-pepper for his beard, a balding head, crow’s feet crinkling his eyes in that expression of perpetual disappointment. When he holds you with rubbery hands, you know a severe lashing is in order. What does he care anyway? He’s never hid the fact that he wedded mother—sweet Mnemosyne Ignatius born into a family of commoners—not out of love, but out of sheer profit. Her indomitable intelligence captures his attention, and being the strategist he is, seeks to claim her like a piece of land for Lucis.
If he could engineer genetics to provide the best of both parental genes, then you supposed you were the test tube baby. Science breeds love. And you were a product of it.
In fact, you would’ve been a genetically superior species if not for a slight defect; you are a daughter, and not a son. What is seen as the pride of the Andronicus is lamented as a tragedy spanning generations and generations of males, all bones and skeletons chanting your name as a curse from their graves.
Disgusting daughter of the Andronicus doesn’t need to go out for school, they say, so keep her in the house and give her home tutors.
What could you do? What could you do to outshine others when you’re already shadowed from the start?
Trying to win father’s approval, your tiny hands constructed a manor out of building blocks.
The base would be your education, first and foremost, whilst its pinnacle will be your induction into the Lucian council. Touted as a bright child whose intellect surpasses those your age, your primary education flew by in just several years. Then comes your secondary education at ten, swallowing algorithms and equations and history and Crystal knowledge and regurgitating them with your fingers down your throat within three years. Fourteen and dying, tertiary education waits for no one but those who persevere; thick textbooks are your bedtime stories and writing discursions is your forced hobby. Academic journals are your daily reports and publications bearing the penname T. Andronicus is a common quote from one scholar to another.
With this, you had hoped, at the very least, father’s impression would improve. ‘Look, father, look—I’ve graduated at nineteen with a doctorate!’ you’d rehearse in front of the mirror, and father would finally regard you with light in his eyes and an approving hum of ‘yes, child, I see it now; you’re definitely an Andronicus, worthy enough to carry on the family name.’
But no.
Disallowed from attending your own graduation at the prestigious Lucis University, confined to the living room with only Byron and the chancellor of Lucis U attending, the ceremony is a disquieting funeral progression in all blacks. No commemorative pictures, no bouquets of flowers, no twirling of doctoral gown, and certainly no tossing of tudor bonnet. Not when father’s a lingering presence around the corners, watching.
In the end, what did nineteen years of your life amount to?
Nothing.
Nothing but a rolled up piece of paper.
With a weary sigh, you drag your unwilling body from the table, approaching your trusty cupboard of escape. All the emergency supplies are neatly folded within, clean white linens and scent of sunshine on the sheets. Wrenching the contents out on the floor, you make your way to your favourite spot by the glass windows, where the sunlight falls just right and the warmth seeping through the glass panes feels just nice. An afternoon nap is in order, and you’re not going to take no for an answer.
A customary action you’ve already perfected, you lay out the sheets, layered it up with comforters, decked the corners in pillows and bolsters, and leapt onto your private heaven. Always in an oversized shirt too big and pants too baggy, you shimmy down your blanket and bury your face in the reprieve, even if outside, Insomnia is a constant force in the world.
You don't have to care.
You don't have to care at all, for it is a world out of your grasp.
Scrubbing away all remnants of Byron and father and papers and pens, you turn to your side and grabbed a pillow, encasing it in a bear hug. Sleep will come, sooner or later, even if it rides a late train.
That is, until, you hear the doorknob turning.
“—and the teacher said it too!”
from the other side of the door, mama laughs. you couldn’t see her past this wood, but you could just image the way her face lights up with mirth, her luscious curls bouncing, her shoulders shaking. somehow, the thought makes you smile too. even if you’re separated by this door, nothing separates the bond between a mother and a daughter. what was it called again, in that blue-and-red book byron got for you? oh—right, storge. a bond built upon empathy, familiarity, and the natural love between parent and child.
if this is truly love, then you’d never want to let it go.
when mama’s laughter dies down and she speaks up again, it is all breathy with a trace of melancholy. “byron,” she says, and the albino standing by straightens up at the mention of his name. “thank you, thank you always for risking your life to bring us together. i can’t repay you enough. if—if quintus knew of this, then you’d surely—”
the steady footfalls of byron approaching your location echoes in the parlour, and he too kneels by your side, pressing a gloved hand on the door. it’s as though he could feel mama, just like you. “not at all, lady mnemosyne. taking care of her is my job. and,” he pauses, eyeing you from the corner of his eye with a smirk, “even if taking care of kids isn’t my specialty, the astrals are helping out loads. six knows how rowdy she can get when she’s bored.”
in an instant, your face shoots up in flames. “whuh—hey! that’s soooo not true!”
he laughs. and mama laughs too.
but mama’s laughter is strained, breaking at the edges.
WHAT GREETS HIM WHEN HE steps in is the usual plateau of Insomnia’s generous panorama of skyscrapers—and the sight of you, all cuddled up on your makeshift island of blankets and pillows by the sunshine. This time around, you noticed his presence straight away, for you sat up on your bedding and gave him the haziest of looks, one with half-lidded eyes, mussed up hair, and a drooping neckline teetering on the edge of your shoulder, revealing the sharp cut of your collarbones.
In other words, Noctis realises as he shuts the door behind him, you are a mess.
By all means, it’s not unexpected, he supposes. Last week ended on a sour note with your butler being a jerk not only to you, but to him and Prompto as well. The albino scoffs at the idea of ‘friendship’ and probably thinks it’s like a kid’s show, one with loads of rainbows and glitters raining from the sky in all its neon glory. Friendship is magic or whatever it is that Kenny Crow squawked in an ad by the subway. In a ritual increasingly habitual to him, he slips off his loafers and socks, drops his satchel behind the door, and plods over to you.
“Hey, you look like shit,” he says—and he can mentally imagine his etiquette tutor screaming at him at the back of his head because he did not just address a female nobility like that and oh Six where have I gone wrong? as she wrings her hands tragically. Still, his casual greeting cracks the sleepy stupor you’re in, and your lips curve into a small smile. It’s nowhere a big one, but it’s a start.
A hand rubbing your eye, legs splayed by your sides, you yawn. “Compared to you, yeah I look awful. What’s with all the getup? Some fancy royal stuff you had to attend, Prince?”
Oh—right. It had been the norm to show up in shirt, cargos and boots to your room, so you obviously haven’t seen him in a black dress shirt, fitted pants, and matching tie. Cufflinks and tie pin too, if he were to count that in. Being subjected under your intense scrutiny puts him in an awkward spot, so he looks away and busies himself with unfastening his diamond cufflinks, drawing his sleeves up to his lean forearms.
“Yeah, last paper for finals today,” Noctis grouses, rubbing his nape. “Lucis U and their formal dress code, seriously.”
That makes you laugh, a small sound in a room too big. And that, that’s definitely a good start for him.
“I feel you,” you agree in an almost placating manner, pulling a pillow to your chest as you rest your cheek against it. “They made me wear formal stuff for finals, even when I was taking it in my own house. Sheesh, talk about upholding the proud Lucis U custom.”
Leaning backwards and holding his upper body weight with an arm, Noctis regards you under curious eyes. “You’re a graduate of Lucis U too?”
“Yeeeep, that’s the one. Just don’t call me a senior or alumni or whatever,” you brush it off, shaking your head. The subject is dropped just as easily as a new one is introduced, something you’re skirting around again. “Anyway Prince, now that it’s the end of the semester for you, what’re you gonna do? Got some exciting plans all laid out?”
Well, that’s a first. He’s hardly heard you talking like this, all laidback and bare to the world—to him. Mentally filing away the random trivia in his head, Noctis studies the lazy hints of a smile on your lips before shrugging. “Nope. It’s December and I’ve got absolutely nothing to do.” He pauses for a while. “Well—except Justice Monsters is gonna come out with a new game soon, but you know how they’re always teasing us with the release.”
At the news, your eyes are round, blinking at him owlishly. Half of your face buried in your pillow, your voice comes out muffled. Almost reminiscent of a preying cat waiting for the perfect moment to ambush his legs, Noctis thinks to himself as you speak up. “Justice Monster series? You mean the arcade ones, right?”
“Yep, that’s the one,” he repeats your words right back at you, and he doesn’t miss how you wrinkle your nose at him in mock exasperation. “Their last game was what—four years ago? Prom said they’re revamping their whole system to make it new, but I don’t know if that’s the case. Kinda liked the old battle system, to be honest. Can’t add much to a pinball game anyway.”
For a moment, there is a lull in the conversation.
You’re all quiet, contemplative, eyes trailing down from his nose and resting on his knee, and all Noctis thinks is that he’s messed up somewhere. But it’s a video game and you’re a diehard fan of games, right? So what’s with the awkward silence?
“I’ve never played Justice Monsters before,” you say, a slow and thoughtful drawl of your words. Almost too loud in the deafening silence of this room. “Since they’re all arcade stuffs.”
That’s not a problem because Noctis supposes Justice Monsters series isn’t for everyone and the gaming machines are all located in rowdy arcades, teeming with high schoolers raring to outdo each other in high scores—oh.
Arcade.
He almost wants to drag a hand through his face at his momentary lapse in judgment. “My bad.”
“Nah, no harm done,” you reply, and there it is again, the fledgling of a smile on your face. “I just know most of the console stuffs since I can play it from home, and that’s easy enough. Any chance of Justice Monsters being ported to console or mobile? Maybe I can get a chance to play it someday.”
All he can do is to shrug, scratching his cheek. “Don’t hold your breath on it. If it took them this long to release a game, it’ll probably take them decades to port it over.”
You make a noncommittal sound at his answer and flop backwards, snuggling in your nest of pillows and blankets, sprawling all over the white sheets. The drowsy haze is back at it again, gradually consuming your limbs, starting from the languid curl of your legs to the indolent circling of your arms around a pillow. Rays of sunlight fall on your features in fragments, the warmth from the sun a stark contrast against the biting chill of your room. Sleepy, lazy child of the Andronicus, all nestled up in your kingdom of pillows and fort of sheets. Always tired, always sleeping.
Finding neither the need to break the silence nor the want for a new conversation, Noctis hooks a finger in his necktie and loosens the loop strangling his neck. He throws the silk piece aside and sets to work on rearranging your feathery mountain of pillows, making some space for him. If anything, you don’t seem to mind it at all. Your encouragement is to pat the space right beside you, already relinquishing the hold of several pillows to be gifted to his territory. By the time he’s done, he’s already lying on his back, taking in the arabesque detailing on the plaster ceiling, half of your pillows by his side.
It’s a quiet affair, lounging about like this.
You’re not talking, he’s not talking, and that’s fine. Conversational silence is an art many failed. Cold silence is offset by the warm brushes of sunlight on his skin, all over his body. The fuzzy hum of the central air conditioning, your even breathing, and just pillows. Very fine pillows, he thinks, as he shifts about to get the perfect position on this little island.
Undisturbed by his presence, you continue to stare into space, lost in your thoughts. A blank look he’s seen for weeks now, eyes trained on the ceiling, broken by the slow flutter of your eyelashes every now and then. Almost like a default expression of yours but you made a favourable impression so far, starting from the smaller smiles and even smaller laughter. He’s not expecting full-out chortles like Gladio or one of Prompto’s indignant cries, but you’re getting there—slowly.
Maybe by the time he’s King of Lucis, you’d wield an array of expressions like King Regis’ Armiger, ready to laugh, ready to smile, ready to shout your way to the top as his strategist.
And he thinks Prompto will like that very much.
Gazing at the parading clouds in the sky, cotton white on baby blue with just the barest hints of crystal pink from the magic barrier, you finally breathe out a sigh. “Hey, Prince? You wanna sleep together?”
He blinks.
Distracted by the hushed tranquillity of your room, Noctis almost misses your question. Craning his head to get a better look at your face, his eyebrows furrow in automatic. “Uh—what?”
Did he mishear that?
“I said, you wanna sleep together?” you repeat a tad bit firmer this time, rolling sideways to look at him. “I’ve got extra blankets and pillows back there. You look like you could use some extra hours ‘cause your dark eye circles are starting to scare me.”
Geez, that’s what you meant. You almost gave him a premature death. With how your face is clean from any suggestive traces of—whatever it is, all that you’re offering him is an invitation to sleep. Nap. Pillows and blankets provided. Absolutely free of charge. All of that, and something else. Friendship. Unspoken in the air.
“I blame it on the finals. Too much Ebony and too little sleep,” Noctis grumbles, pressing a hand to his hair as the beginnings of a yawn threaten to ruin his denial. “But nah, I’ll pass—“
Aaaaand you’re already up and about without even caring about what he has to say, walking towards the cupboard in a few resolute steps, wresting the doors open. Emptying the entire content of two comforters and three pillows stacked on your tiny arms, you cross the entire length of the floor with the same hurriedness as before. In dogged determination, you fuss about with donating his landscape of pillows with even more pillows and almost buried him under two comforters before you’re finally satisfied with the arrangement.
Dusting off your hands, you return to your half of the land and slip under your blankets once more, pulling them up to your chin. “Good night, Prince. See you later.”
He isn’t even given a say in the matter? “Hey, wait—“
Turning away from him, you pull your blankets over your head and all is lost to the world.
sunday. sundays are best spent with family, a quality time shared between parent and child. to you, no day matters more than the days you spent with mama, reverential over the piano keys she pressed, keeping every single musical masterpiece locked tight in your mind. today, a sunday, is just as good as any other day as byron places your hand in his, guiding you to the parlour by the piano room. he must’ve felt your excitement since you bounce on your feet and eagerly sat by the adjoining door the moment you entered.
two quick knocks and a word. “mama—“
only, her shrill scream answers your call.
THAT FEELING WHEN HE’S HIT with one of Prompto’s misfired stopcast in one of their training rounds? Yeah, that’s exactly what he feels like, now that he’s up. Or barely up anyway. Crimson stains the rumpled sheets, telling him of a sunset bleeding past the skyscrapers and blending into the distant horizon. A persistent hammer is hitting the back of his brain and his throat is all scratchy, bordering on a gaiatoad’s croak. Another nap sounds like a brilliant idea, but two things are nagging him right now; one: his shoulder aches like Gladio took him camping, and two: someone’s phone is in his face.
Forcing the sleep away, Noctis rubs his eyes and attempts to straighten his vision.
Phone. Hands holding said phone. A distinctly feminine face and complementing effeminate features attached to said hands. Sloppy shirt and a drooping neckline and all clean cuts of collarbone with a blanket hiding the rest of the body beside him. Shoulders rising and falling in steady breathing, wordless.
What in the Six is this.
Is this a newer version of a wet dream? With girls showing up in his bed, holding up a phone to his face? That’s impossible. His toes are freezing and his fingernails are bluish bordering on purple and this really doesn’t feel like any of those hormonal teenage fantasy phase he outgrew—even if it’s too realistic to begin with.
“Hey Prince, you’re up.”
Where has he heard that voice before?
Eyes peer curiously from behind the phone.
“Prince? You up yet?”
And quite suddenly, everything jolts back into his head like someone’s hit rewind on a tape; the stiff pain in his shoulder is because he’s an idiot for rolling in his sleep and ended up lying on his side, he drove his Audi to the Citadel to make a long overdue visit to your room, the finals seized him by his throat while it had Prompto in a chokehold on the wall, Ignis made oatmeal and berries for today’s breakfast, and—
“Slow start, huh?”
—right.
Finally, everything makes sense.
“Yeah,” Noctis finally finds his voice, even if it is raspy like he spent a night at a karaoke box with the gang—minus a brooding, dismissive Ignis who’d rather be found in a bookstore. “I feel like a zombie.”
Now you’re looking at him, all sympathetic even as you’re tapping on your phone. “That’s awful. Those late-nighters finally caught up to you, huh. Want some aspirins?”
As groggy as he is, he has half the mind to refuse your offer. “Pass. I’ll be okay.”
“If you say so.”
A distracted reply.
And a distracted reply from you only meant one thing: King’s Knight.
He’s not wrong when he sees your fingers working on overdrive over the screen, chewing on your bottom lip in pure concentration. Entirely absorbed in the game, teeth grinding, brows stitched together, it almost looks like you would break your phone if you missed out on a combo or two. He knows he can count on you to wake up only to play King’s Knight and tune out everything else on Eos if it meant clearing a raid with a perfect score. But at this point, he’s torn between deciding whether your obsession with the game borders on downright lunacy, or you’re going to drag him deeper by his feet into this hell as well.
The dramatic moment ends with much harrumph on your side and you lifelessly throw yourself on your back again, phone aside. Blue eyes stray from the way your brows are pinched together and your teeth littering your bottom lip with bites, to the sprawl of your arm and down your phone, where DEFEAT drops over the screen in gruesome reds and blacks.
Ah. Right.
Losing a raid is always frustrating, that’s for sure.
“That sucks.” This time around, he’s the one who’s sympathetic. “What raid was it?”
“Against one of the Einherjars.” You mourn, rolling over to your side. Face half-obscured by your hair, falling over your cheeks, Noctis isn’t sure what to make of your expression. Is it one of resentment? Or simply one of lament? Turning on his side, Noctis squints to get a good look as you continue your spiel of grief. “You know these Einherjars, right? You gotta fight them to recruit them?” At his nod, you continue—not before sighing deeply like it’s a long-suffering disease. “There’s a secret dungeon in Yeiva Village where you can fight the Einherjar Callisto. And he pretty much trashed me good. Real good. I got wiped in 1.5 minutes flat.”
“Probably because Kaliva’s cooldown on his shield takes fifteen seconds,” Noctis offers his conjecture, in which you meet with rapid agreement. “Sure, Kaliva’s got high resistance towards magic but he’s a glass cannon at physical defence. He can’t take those big attacks if the boss comes at him.”
“That’s so true, Prince,” you mutter under your breath, rolling your eyes. Your free hand reaches out to tuck the offending locks of hair behind your ear, and you all but pulled your blanket over your shoulder again, smothered in a cocoon. “Necromancer Kaliva’s got better RES than most, but his DEF is still tiny compared to Warrior Ray Jack. Ugh. This feels so hopeless. I can’t get that Einherjar at this rate.”
Noctis bites back a small laugh.
Because—seriously, are you actually sulking over this?
Fumbling under the covers, he reaches for his phone and draws it out of the pocket. Within two clicks of unlocking and logging into King’s Knight, he settles his eyes on you again, fighting the grin that’s starting to grow on his lips.
“Hey, c’mon. Let’s try again. I’ll tank it for you.”
[tbc.]
if someone says they’re gonna tank a boss for you, those are words of pure love right there. ;;v;; <3 honestly this chapter is such a warm fluff when i wrote it (im around chapter 17 rn where sweet fluff happens again) and writing fluff makes everyone happy <3 except. when plot comes into play. that’s when tragedy happens. ;;v;;
out of curiosity, how tall are you readers? ouo ) if you readers don’t mind sharing? or what sort of height would you readers prefer? or would you readers prefer if there is no mention on height at all? i was writing a chapter and encountered some difficulty as i couldn’t imagine the average height of the readers of this fic in comparison to noct (involving some brushing-touching-feely stuff), so i’m trying to establish some average height to get it going. <3 please and thank you, if you don’t mind!

I want to know how you would write Trespasser if you were given the chance to change it from that bullshit that Bioware threw into our faces. Like how would you go about telling the story?
I saw this yesterday then rambled about it for at least an hour to my Hawke and got so mad and up upset about it and rolled around angry and Im gonna try to answer this without doing that.
Ok so, Im approaching this with the assumptions that DAI is complete, no edits can be made to it (-sigh-) so all the events happened, Solas is still around being a dick, etc etc etc. Some bioware god has just handed me a blank script and said “do whatever”
Im gonna bullet point so I ramble less:
I’m going to keep the exalted council because honestly I think that was one of only two great things trespasser had going for it. DAI and the inquisition fucked up so many political things and power structures and fucking burned massive holes in Thedas that being forced to be held accountable is GREAT!! Its so great! Also gives a good reason to have the gaggle back together (including the Divine etc etc)
I would hazard to push this FURTHER if I can, having the council do more than try to force you to dissolve the inquisition. I would want to see them charge the inquisitor and members of the inqusition with shit cause DANG we got away with a lot.
Additionally some PROPER conspiracy/politic interigue but I will get to that in a second.
I am gutting the Solas plot line. Gutting it. The outside hide of it is still good, I like the mirrors taking you from the council to fucking fucked up history between realms whatever place and I HAVE to keep Solas/FenHrel so like FINE but I am BURNING the concept of “dalish/elhven gods having secretly be Very Powerful Mages who kept slaves and fell to their own hubris and are just as bad as their tevinter oppressors” because no and Im not even going to explain WHY thats horrible and insulting.
INSTEAD. I would play the actual trickster god card. Like actual mythology and god pantheons. I would have it that Solas was just around to fuck with you and get his shiny ball back and now that he’s got it he’s not gonna destory the veil to ‘restore his people’ but he’s gonna use it to wake the other elvhen gods the Fuck Up so he can cause chaos and run circles around them until he can best them like he did with Mythal.
Lets Wake Those Fuckers Up but keep them as gods please.
Have the Archon be assissate and replaced with a Venatori bastard. Seriously. We underused those shit heads in DAI and how much FUN would it be to have Tevinter go to level 20 out of no where and be like “We have dwindling resources and are a shadow of what we were so we are fucking COMING FOR YOU THEDAS WE ARE SENDING THE ARMIES OF SLAVES AND MAGES TO TAKE UR SHIT”
Fuck man have someone on the exalted council be in their pocket and be like “I for one welcome our new Tevinter overlords” and make you go “fuckin what”
Imagine reports coming in from the Anderfels, from Nevrarra, from the Free Marches that Tevinter armies are fucking SHOWING UP without warning and fucking pillaging villages for resources and enslaving/blood magicing the people there? IMAGINE.
I am also KEEPING the qunari invasion cause that was the OTHER good thing trespasser had. Like. GOOD. Thank god. Its about time we saw them go ‘we’ve had enough and we are coming to FIX SHIT forcibly if need be’
Why are they gonna start invading? CAUSE TEVINTER OBVS. They are gonna be like “Hey Thedas, we are gonna get to you later, but first we gotta unite to destroy this fucking magic evil, we’re doing it with or without ur help actually and fuck you if you think we arent gonna try and convert you suckers later”
Also they still hear about the Dread Wolf fuckery and are not about that either.
Combining more ideas - What if the tevinters be like “oh what you got some elvhen gods waking up and gonna start some shit? Well fuck you if you can kill corphyues we can kill them and steal their shit or enslave them like we did those elf rats anyways fucking watch us”
Exalted Council is a fuck show and the inquisition is not like, “oh we stepped down”, its “fuck u no more insquition” and the inquisitor being like “I lost a hand cause it was fucked up and broken and now I lost my crew and we are at square one and borderline criminals and we gotta fix the world now”
Like origins kinda now that I say that out loud
Anyways, FIGHT ME, this would be way fucking better.

tokyo 5 - exile, transference and counter-transference
The video screen on the far left flickers, white dots falling like lucretian atoms, when they collide they do not merge. She is adjusting the line of the suit whilst looking at herself in the full length mirror. He says something to her and she nods says something equally indiscernible and takes the gun out of her pocket, and the other one from her waist band and hands them to him. In a piroutte movement that strikes fear in the observers heart she spins and does a silent crane kick. She sits down next to him and pulls on black socks and the elegant boots they bought earlier. [here more of speech and waiting]. The transference is nearly complete now, her dressing in an elegant version of her normal black suit meeting uniform, doesn't hide the fact that the process of actualization is becoming conscious wishes.
The council room is over 12 X 12 metres square, the ceiling, with a heavy molding forming a cornice is about 12 metres high. The molding gathers into a rosette in the centre of the ceiling - all that remains of the long gone chandelier is the brass chain that hangs from the hook. The ceiling is painted in an off white colour, the the walls are paneled in light polished or perhaps vanished wood and the parquet floor is an oak tone. The double door is set in an arched panel that is framed by two doric pillars with the doors and pillars painted in a dark clear varnish. The walls have a series of small portraits that are either small discreet paintings or photographs. On the left had wall, in the centre there is a marble bust of a man. The heavy curtains are drawn back from the windows letting the afternoon sunlight into the room. Against the wall on the right is a long console table with bottles of mineral water, and three unlit table lamps. A black telephone sits beside one of them with a pad of white paper and a pen. There are four windows, each with double doors that open out onto a balcony. Across the courtyard the other side of the building comes into view, with the outside covered in scaffolding as that part of the building is undergoing renovation, cables are draped in [what sort of arc?] parabolic arcs across the front of the scaffolding. There are guards looking out over the courtyard to prevent anyone walking past the room. The sunlight is the only illumination in the room, the photons streaming in causing deep shadows in front of the three tables each of which is about 4 metres long. Which are arranged in a U shape with thirteen chairs which are arranged on the outside of the U. There are other chairs set back along the walls. There are discreet power points set in the tables and on the walls. But unlike the rest of the building it has no network points, nor does it allow any wifi or phone signals enter the room.
[the first time] [she follows Kenzo down the corridor. Reported Speech is the most unreliable use of language.] She enters the council room after Kenzo, knowing her seat would be filled by someone else. They were all sitting around the table, dressed in various shades of black and dark grey. Kenzo sat on the last available seat to her right nearest the door. Her father was accompanied by two people standing behind him, she recognized neither of them and wondered where her brother was. Other council seats were also occupied by four or five new people, the police representative was sitting next to her father looking a little uncomfortable. <It had been a very bloody war, she thought> "The final act of business is to decide what to do with her. <not even my name, she sighed. Thank goodness I didn't bring the beretta.> She briefly closed her eyes and opened them again. She smiled. Aware that some at the table flinched. They offered her exile or sacrifice. Silence, sunlight was entering the room, photons were highlighting the slowly falling dust particles, Lucretius must have felt like this looking at the sunlight in rooms like this in ancient Rome. "What sacrifice ?" she asked. "The person you came here with must be killed. Exile means you can never return." There was a sharp intake of breath from Kenzo. Her fingers flexed. The air conditioner started to hum, blowing cool air into the room. The sound of her feet moving slightly, involuntarily. The rubber souls creaking on the parquet floor. One of the guards behind her moved. "Don't move again." In a voice that spoke of dark desires, of Pentheselia wanting to harm someone, anti-photons falling threatening to flood the room. She turned "I need ten minutes" and without waiting for an answer left the room. She closed the door behind her and leaned against the wall, her fingers feeling the raised surface of the wallpaper. Her imaginary was screaming with rage. Exile or sacrifice. She breathes out the tension and walks down the corridor. The corridor is long and very slightly curved, a window at each end opening out onto the street, with doors on both sides. There is a cornice that runs long the ceiling and wall, at either end of the corridor it turns to the left and right into the corridor that continues round the building. There is a stairwell that rises and falls through the building on the inside wall behind an anonymous door. The room in which he waits is near the end of the corridor, behind a bland light oak wooden door. [To live through such a situation is to recognize the impossibility of neutrality, it liberated and intensified their most powerful emotions. All their boundaries collapsed...]
The rooms is 3 metres by 4 metres with a high ceiling. The walls and ceiling are painted white, there is a wooden floor laid over concrete with a patterned rug on the floor. There are two comfortable sofas with a large ottoman in front of the one he is sitting on. Small wooden tables on metal frames and legs with small clear plastic floor protectors on the ends, stand at the ends of the sofas. A flat screen monitor is hanging off the wall by the door. She enters the room from the wooden door in the left corner of the room. She feels the tension leave her as she explains about the options offered, saying she can only accept exile. He doesn't allow her to finish explaining the two options. "Come to London. I would love you too. We need some time to work things out." "And if it doesn't?" "Think of it as a three month experiment." He says seriously. "A year then, lets run the experiment for a year, from last week." She responds standing up and begins to change her clothes dumping the jacket, shirt and trousers into the bin. She is wearing a black sports bra, black pants and some pain relief patches on the larger bruises. She bends over and kisses him. Says something quietly in his ear. Pulls on a pair of jeans, white teeshirt, socks and her black boots, a shoulder holster and her leather jacket. She puts one pistol in the holster and the second smaller pistol into the belt holster behind her back. She pulls on the leather jacket. "Are you sure that you can live with all my baggage?" " Ït is an experiment and i cannot imagine it failing. I will be cautious and take it a day at a time like a hopeful constructivist should..." She looks at her new image in the mirror. The transference nearly complete. [ Kenzo, Magrid and H look at them on the video screens. "You were right Magrid, it's love. I never imagined she could trust and love anyone like this." H watches her daughter undressing and dressing. "Sacrifice was a terrible idea" "I proposed that that we apologize to her, but the council wanted to maintain their authority" H looks at him. "Thankyou for that." "I wonder if she would have moved him into her house, at least during the experiment..." Magrid said. H looks between them wondering at his aberrant behavior. ] "Constructivist, i like the sound of that. I seem to have transferred all my allegiances to us."
They walk down the corridor, she kicks Kenzo gently on the ankle. I'd probably have killed you for this choice a few days ago. Consider that a gentle payment for making me go into exile. He apologizes. Thinking he wouldn’t have blamed her really. He tells them where they will be staying tonight.
[the second time]They separate, the two of them stand behind the single chair. H goes and stands against the wall next to Magrid, the look and listen to them speaking. "These are the thirteen lords and ladies of the yak...." surprised at how easily the comforting cynicism is when she explains things to him. " Ït has changed since the last meeting I attended, three or four of the people are new. " "Anyone I should know?" "That's my father" pointing at him. "Which is the dragon yak ? " She gestures at Kenzo who is looking at them slightly amused. " So it's all their fault" He says looking around the room inspecting their faces. "I should thank them. These things cancel out but still thank you." The room as fallen into silence as they talk. She looks at him and suppresses her laughter. In the silence he asks "Ïs there any hierarchical ordering of their seating positions ? " She shakes her head looking at the new people and wondering if she needs to know them, "Not that I know or care about. It wouldn't matter anymore anyway." He dumped the bag of weapons, which clanked mechanically onto the hard wooden chair. She thought about the machine pistols in the bag and imagined spraying the room with bullets. Her right hand reached out reflexively. One of the new people flinched at her expression. Instead she looked at him. "I choose exile, we are going to London. I cannot stay here everyone will be safer, happier and live longer if we go gently into exile..." He father was frozen as he heard the 'we'. Kenzo gestured to Magrid who was looking tired and leaning against the wall. Looking around the table. "Exile it is, Magrid could you arrange that please." He pushed himself away from the wall. "Yes I'll go to the office and start the process. Let me know where to bring the documents and other things." She opened the bag and took out the short sword, walked across and put it down in front of her father. He looked shocked. " I resign. We will be leaving" (Kenzo wanted to smile at the 'we'). She begins to walk away, turns and looks at her father again. "Never come to London." [More irrelevant and useless words are spoken by people around the table, which are duly recorded but neither of them can ever remember them.]
[the third time] Part of the wall on the left opened, revealing another room the same size as the one they are standing in. There are tall tables with stools around them. A bar with waiters and waitresses carrying trays of food the the tables. The floor is a continuation of the parquet flooring from the council chamber, the walls and ceiling are painted white, there are no cornices, the corners between the walls and ceiling are set at a 90 degree angle. Behind the bar the wall is covered in handmade white patterned ceramic tiles. A diverse range of drinks bottles and cans stand on shelves behind the bar, they are labelled in the languages of the country of origin. At the end of the bar a waitress is serving snacks on white bone china plates. [...] She is talking to a man standing next to an elegant woman who is looking concerned at her. She writes something on a piece of paper which she hands to him. She steps forward and hugs the woman and then hugs him. They both look surprised. She turns away and leaves them looking shocked. Looking for her brother. She sees him holding hands with a woman she does not recognize, they are walking towards Kenzo and him. They meet in the middle of the room. She moves across the room, carefully avoiding the people filling the room and talking, getting there in time to hear him ask: What are you doing here ? The woman ignores the question. I am staying hear/here with him. Raising their hands up as a gesture of empty meaning. On the shores of tokyo bay. I am here to say goodbye to you. She stood next to him, liking the way he was looking confused at the woman and her brother. <Is there anything i don't like about him she wondered>. He reached for a drink. She stopped him. There is nobody here who can be trusted. She tells her brother that the house and all its contents have been given to seo, he will supply protection for her and the child, the rest is his. She tells Kenzo they should go. [are there/their other words spoken? perhaps] He escorts them out. The transference is complete, the counter-transference is absolute.
Old identities escaped by the act of walking through the streets of a city.

Micah Zenko on the Dangers of the US Threat-Industrial Complex
The Diplomat’s Franz-Stefan Gady talks to Micah Zenko about his most up-to-date e book (co-authored with Michael A. Cohen) Crystal clear and Present Basic safety: The World Has Hardly ever Been Improved and Why That Matters to Americans, which outlines how and why the American public has been bombarded with inflated overseas menaces and perennial nationwide protection crises by a so-termed Risk-Industrial Elaborate.
The e book argues that threats by states this kind of as Iran, North Korea, and the rising military energy of China and Russia have been exaggerated, when other threats to U.S. democracy and the American way of daily life — rising financial inequality, declining public well being and the expanding countrywide personal debt, among some others — have comparatively been given a lot less attention by national stability professionals.
Micah Zenko is Whitehead Senior Fellow in the U.S. and the Americas System at Chatham House. Previously, he worked at the U.S. Point out Department’s Office of Policy Scheduling, Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Governing administration, and as a Senior Fellow at the Council on International Relations.

The Diplomat: In your book you and Michael A. Cohen write that numerous People are unaware of the political, economic, and social development that has taken position in nearly each corner of the globe above the earlier three a long time. Alternatively, the U.S. community is currently being fed, “a continual diet regime of risk inflation that has manufactured them deeply fearful of the planet outdoors their borders,” convincing them “that abroad menaces are perpetually getting to be additional probable, lethal, and sophisticated.” Why is that so?
Micah Zenko: The remedy, in aspect, is identified in the cognitive biases that have progressed within just our minds. Human beings are hardwired to treatment very first and foremost about our survival, passing on inherited genetic qualities, and ensuring the basic safety of small children and grandchildren. Threatening information or imagery imprints significantly deeper on the brain and is additional easily recalled than is nonthreatening information. Compounding these innate human tendencies is the actuality that beneficial worldwide developments and the undisputed realities of human development go unmentioned by America’s leaders or media stores. So, unless of course you make an remarkable work to study issues like Entire world Health and fitness Business stories, you will naturally think the world is generally finding even worse and worse.
How do you determine the Risk-Industrial Elaborate?
It is an informal constellation of actors that bears similarities to the “military-industrial complex” and “its acquisition of unwarranted influence” that President Eisenhower famously warned of in his farewell deal with in 1961. It is made up of Pentagon officers and generals who roll in and out of the defense market quicker than at any time defense contractors keen to promote weapons techniques and providers politicians who weaponize purported foreign threats to pass favored legislation pundits and feel tank fellows and screenwriters and administrators who acquire guidance and complex guidance from the CIA and Armed Providers. Supporting these entities are journalists and mainstream media, which simplify and amplify threatening illustrations or photos and information and facts with no historical context or standpoint. The defining attribute of the Danger-Industrial Complicated is the too much to handle inclination to exaggerate the quantity and implications of international threats on behalf of individual or organizational self-passions, while almost never ever acknowledging any reduction in those people threats or favourable world-wide traits.
You do not advocate isolationism in your e book, but at the very same time you criticize the militarization of U.S. international coverage and the inclination for military services intervention by the international policy institution of the two important U.S. functions. Can you cite just one or two illustrations the place you would decrease U.S. armed forces involvement in the earth?
The Trump administration’s explicit regime alter coverage in Venezuela is the latest illustration the place appeasement-like dynamics are currently being played out. The United States performs an outsized external role in making a disaster in a place, even though contacting for the recent political leader to move down from electric power. Now, with domestic and international audiences looking at, the United States has positioned its very own reliability on the line to assure this demand is met. The Trump administration can either back down, and be charged with appeasing a brutal dictator, or keep on escalating the diplomatic pressures, shows of armed service force, and unquestionably covert routines. It is the self-induced pressures to do “something,” which significantly way too typically potential customers decisionmakers to contact on America’s most demonstrable and responsive device — military services pressure.
Do you see the Danger-Industrial Complicated at get the job done when it will come to emerging systems? For case in point, after once more there is communicate that the U.S. is slipping at the rear of in the technological race, this time for hypersonic weapons and synthetic intelligence.
One well known instance with newer systems is the follow of popular cybersecurity companies, which have a disproportionate affect on how policymakers and citizens understand digital vulnerabilities. These corporations publish investigation reviews about state-based hacking teams or electronic forensic accounts of consequential information breaches. While the hacking threats protected in such studies are real (if overstated), these similar corporations also offer products and services and software to defend against these hacks.
These studies then provide as the foundation for engineering journalists’ stories. But if you study those tales, they never ever incorporate any disclaimer about that firm’s monetary motivations to make the reports in the initially place. It would be like a Lasik surgery medical professional publishing reviews about the alleged harms brought on by eyeglasses. No journalist would report this without having noting the conflict of interest, but when it arrives to cybersecurity firms they do this regularly.
In your book you appear to counsel that “nation setting up at dwelling,” as U.S. President Barack Obama emphasized in 2011, must be the top rated priority for U.S. policymakers. Could you elaborate?
The core thesis of our reserve is that U.S. leaders make a strategic misdiagnosis about what threatens People, and how greatest to protect against or mitigate from these threats. The best threats, pitfalls, and harms that Americans deal with just about every working day do not originate from abroad, but somewhat our neighborhoods and communities. Our book has a chapter, “That Which Harms Us,” which documents these quite a few rising threats, and the fairly very low-expense plan interventions that would diminish them. When the CDC [Center for Disease Control] announced in November that lifestyle expectancy in the United States experienced fallen for three straight many years — the previous time this took place was during the top of the Spanish Flu a century back — it really should have catalyzed an quick and sustained reaction to confront this countrywide disaster. But, it went largely unnoticed mainly because dealing with domestic troubles is apportioned much less funding and interest than international types.
The Pentagon’s Overseas Contingency Operation (OCO) funding is slated to increase to an unparalleled $174 billion in fiscal calendar year 2019. What do you assume this claims about the institutionalization of danger inflation in the U.S. authorities?
The Pentagon has invested $1.8 trillion in OCO funding due to the fact September 11, 2001, so Congress and the American community have commonly become inured to these staggering expenses.
Moving beyond the United States, even though the U.S. political establishment seems to be permeated by danger inflation, political elites in allied nations around the world undergo from danger deflation. For instance, Germany does not see Russia as a significant danger to its countrywide security, nor is there a great deal awareness about escalating Chinese impact on the European continent. And even though the govt of Shinzo Abe has been pushing Japan to turn out to be a more assertive military services actor in East Asia, the Japanese general public and the vast majority of the country’s political class stay aloof to foreign threats. Do you imagine menace inflation by the U.S.-centered Danger-Industrial Intricate is a reaction to or compensation for the unwillingness of allies to do far more for their possess nationwide security?
The basis of U.S. overseas danger inflation is its expansive building of foreign pursuits. At a person time or one more, pretty much the entire earth has been declared a “national interest.” From the Monroe Doctrine, to the Carter Doctrine, to mutual defense treaty allies, to much more imprecise ideas, these kinds of as unstable locations or ungoverned areas, as well as outer place and cyberspace — No other country has these express international pursuits, which is why overseas menace inflation is comparatively distinctive to the United States. So, it is not just allies, but non-allied spouse nations, commercial house operators, personal sector significant infrastructure firms, and many others, who enjoy a part. In excess of time, these entities have spent larger or lesser amounts on their defensive abilities, but individuals investing levels have minor impression on U.S. menace perceptions.
Connected to this, general public polling in allied international locations has proven that the U.S. is frequently viewed as just as substantially of a danger to countrywide safety by the community in people respective international locations than perceived adversaries. This was the circumstance even prior to the presidency of the Donald Trump and can be traced back to a selection of things including the legacy of the 2003 invasion of Iraq, the 2008 Money Crisis, and the perceived U.S. hypocrisy of touting a rule-dependent global purchase whose procedures evidently do not use to the United States. This has manufactured it frequently hard to defend U.S. steps overseas. Do you believe this is an overlooked aspect and one thing that in truth will hurt U.S. national security in the very long run?
Wonderful query. I do not imagine U.S. officials make considerably of a honest effort and hard work to protect its actions overseas, outside of fora in which these challenges come up, this kind of as the UN Human Legal rights Council and the Security Council. When presidents and diplomats defend or justify U.S. policies overseas, it has all the features of a staged functionality. They read through an elaborate script, but huge majorities of the viewers perceive it a perform of fiction. Of class, saying to uphold ideas and norms that you and your allies violate is not completely an American apply fairly it is popular of all fantastic powers.
State governments cooperate (or not) with the United States, based upon their shared passions at the time. But those people passions are constructed and prone to shifting based upon domestic political pressures and regional or world norms. When the United States most requires cooperation that is overt and visible to public scrutiny, that is when very poor world-wide opinion of U.S. foreign plan can be detrimental.
Can you title two concrete proposals how to lessen the influence of the Danger-Industrial Complicated?
The mainstream media must market a a lot more well balanced and precise depiction of the environment, which would aspect the innumerable good developments of recent human progress. Attempt to obtain a person these kinds of story on cable information or in a newspaper. You will not.
The most active and vital users of the Menace-Industrial-Sophisticated are all of us. Specified their prolonged background of mischaracterizations or outright lies about foreign threats, citizens must concern the purported statements of their political leaders. Critical considering is the only dependable defense versus misinformation. In addition, we advise a dozen totally free web sites that offer nonpartisan, factual details about the earth.
Our Planet in Facts, Gapminder, OECD Library, Wikipedia, Human Protection Report Challenge, Uppsala Conflict Knowledge System, Earth Overall health Organization, Centers for Condition Handle and Avoidance, Heart for Systematic Peace, Gun Violence Archive, World wide Terrorism Database, and HumanProgress. These are free of charge, regularly current, and exact characterization of domestic and international affairs that are normally misrepresented by the Menace-Industrial Complicated.

Question with progressive insurance?
Ok heres the deal. Last September we were backing out of our driveway and bumped into our neighbors drivers door on his late 80's mazda mx3. It caused a little dent in his car and just a tiny scratch on our car. We agreed that we will just handle it outside of insurance once spring came. Now that the snow finally melted here, he left a note on our door saying he wants payment in full in 7 days or he will report to our insurance. My question is, progressive told us they put it under property damage so there is no deductible but what will this do to our rates if anything? Thank You""

What does 'annual deductible' mean for health insurance?
Hey guys so I just want to get this straight because we are looking at purchasing new insurance... Isn't a lack of affordable health insurance merely a very late term abortion for Blue collar workers?
Alright, I'm being overly dramatic but what if, as head of household such an individual, without insurance, is treated to a very costly procedure and dies anyway? Why then, if Welfare is so frowned upon by the same opposition group to affordable health care (often referred as Universal health care by way of diversion)why is the mother, if she is unable to provide for her children often left homeless and left to wander the streets while they are given up for adoption? Why is this oft repeated scenario accepted by Christian voter or even wealthy atheists (ordinary ones, even) for whom there never may be enough money? This is a worst case scenario and actually happens in some cases. How does one address this issue? I've heard all of standard insults but I'd really appreciate an honest answer and I'm not at all in favor of universal health care for the indolent or the F--k 'em and forget 'em fathers everywhere or, for that matter, the largest group of Welfare recipients, save their unfortunate offspring.""

""Grad Student Getting First 4x4: Buy/ Lease, and Insurance Cost?""
I'm going to grad school for 2 years in Utah. It'll be such a shame if I never get to explore its remote wilderness, just because I don't have a 4x4. So, I'm thinking about a Wrangler: - Lease one.. On Jeep's website, it says leasing a Brand New Sport for 24 months is less than $400/mo [$9,600 2 years] - I can buy a preowned, and the furthest I can go is $10,000. But with that price, I reckon it's gonna have lots of miles, and need some tune up crap.. Another thing is: Being out of state, I have to get my own insurance, which presumably is more expensive than extending my parents policy. I'm 23, 2 speeding tickets. Progressive gimme a ridiculous quote - $1,200 for 6 months. I wonder if it's me being underage, or my violations.. But I see some post in here, people pay 70, 80 bucks a month. How much do you pay for yours? What do yall folks think I should do..buy one or lease one? Or based on my case, do you suggest me getting other 4WD alternatives?""

I was just curious, as I am shopping for car insurance for the first time. I am a 23 year old male, so it will probably be higher than a lot of others, but I was wondering what you think is a fair rice as I shop around? Recommend a certain insurance company? All answers will be appreciated! -Dan""
When to add insurance a newly purchased used car?
I'm purchasing a used truck from a relative of mine for pretty cheap and I'll have to drive the vehicle back down, about 130 miles, to my city by myself. My question is do I have to purchase insurance for the truck before I go up there? Or do I have a grace period where I can drive the truck (say 5 days) without insurance and then once I have the title and other paperwork in my name, go and get insurance? I'm in the state of California, if that helps.""

""Where to get the cheapest car insurance for new driver, and which combinations of options, to get it lower?""
I am 17 and lice in Hartlepool in England and I have got a 1.2 mk2 3 door Fiat Punto. And i need insurance, apparently Adrian Flux is cheep for young drivers, but just over a month ago i was quoted 1800, and now that i need it i am being quoted 2600, y? I was also surprised when i found out that my car is a group 4 insurance, with it being a little 60bhp 1.2 compared to my mates 130bhp car being a group 5. I cannot go on my mams insurance either as she can only drive an automatic. So I considered selling my Punto and try getting an automatic to go on my mams insurance as she has over 10 year no claims, but her 200 insurance went up to 2500. I guss alot of the price being because of where we live, there was multistory flats, in a big estate, and was a bad area, but now they have been knocked down and is now a new modern housing area. Is there anywhere I can contact, to come prove it is a nice area now? Thanks""

Insurance grace period/need insurance to title and register?
In IL, is there any grace period between buying a car and having insurance? Or put another way, will I need to show proof of insurance when I go to DMV to register and get title? HELP PLEASE. car insurane/accident help needed. please.?
I got in a car accident Saturday night. The other person was at total fault. She called her insurance company, Allstate, and made a claim, and told them that everything was her fault. I called today and put in my statment. They told me to come to a local Allstate place tomorrow, they will estimate how much it will cost to repair my car, cut me a check, and I can take my car anywhere to get it fixed. They said while my car is in the shop they will rent a car to me free of charge. My insurance hasn't even been involved, and it doesn't look like it will be. My concern is, that my boyfriend was driving, and he is not on MY insurance. But will this even matter? Help please. I'm 18 and I live in Florida and I'm stressed out to hell and back.""

Car insurance question no claims bonus?
so, i went onto the website with the annoying singing fat man, got a reasonable quote for my classic car, declared all cars in my household, one of which is a company car with 2 years NCB. Paid the deposit and remainder was to be paid monthly by direct debit. After a couple of weeks now they've written to me wanting proof of the NCB I stated, wanting details of the previous insurance and policy number. So, I email them (as they stated in the letter that this would be the quickest way to resolve and avoid having my policy cancelled) saying the NCB was on company insurance rather than another private insurance which i think they assume I have (the option on NCB on the website included NCB on company cars), no response to my email, so I send another, now I've had a red coloured letter threatening cancellation of my insurance unless I provide the information. Tried phoning and it's either constantly engaged or answer phone. Emailed for a third and final time and put a copy of the email in the post with no response. I feel I have been totally mislead by assuming I have NCB on my company car policy, so, should they decide to cancel my policy can I get my deposit and 1st month's payment back? Citizens advice has told me that the policy was misleading and was not as described so I should be due a refund but how can I expect to get this if I cannot contact them? HELP and advice please!""
How much will my car insurance go up because of a ticket?
The other day, I was in a hurry to get to school, and I was pulled over going 70mph in a 45mph speed zone. I was issued a $101.99 speeding ticket and was NOT charged with reckless driving or anything else. I haven't told my father yet (I'm not yet 18.), but I am selling a lot of video games I do not play anymore to pay for the ticket and any other increased insurance rates. My question is: how much will my car insurance (USAA Full Coverage) rates increase per month because of this ticket? I drive a 2008 Super Black 350z, and I have been involved in an accident, so my rates are already about $500/mo. Friends have told me that my insurance will go up at least $200. Is this true? More or less? Or is there a percentage of my current rate that it increases by. Any help would be appreciated, so I know how much I should expect to pay my father when he sees the ticket on my insurance report. Thanks!""

How much would I pay for the Insurance Renewal?
I recently had a car accident with my brand new 4WD vehicle. The front part were badly damaged and is now in the manufacturer's garage. Good thing I didn't get any physical injury as the vehicle's air bag went off just on time and my comprehensive insurance will cover for the agency repairs. My question is, assuming that I'll never encounter another major accident for the next 11 months, how much(more or less) would I pay for the vehicle's insurance renewal next year after it has been assessed by a qualified individual. As early as now, I want to have an idea how the insurance company will compute for my insurance renewal and what are other factors do they consider say I paid them around $1,300 for this year's fee. I hope someone could give me an idea re insurance renewal and other pertinent info re this matter.""
