A closer look at Simon "Ghost" Riley's interpersonal guilt

Simon is fairly certain he's liked the Sergeant for a long time. Maybe since the first time they met. Probably not, his hair pissed him off. But very quickly he grew much too fond of him. 

It's always been a very frustrating affair when Simon catches feelings, ever since he was little. Originally, when he was a boy, he was upset because it made him realize he was gay. It took him a long while (11 years, actually) to get over that. But as he got older—after Roba—his frustration stemmed from the fact that it would never work. He would never allow it to work. He was too fucked up to ever be in a proper relationship. He has a hard time sharing a bed due to his nightmares (or night terrors, depending on how truthful he's being in describing the reality of the situation), he's very stubborn when it comes to his routines and “odd habits”, he’s slow to trust, and has enough baggage to sink a ship. The last time he hooked up with someone was maybe seven years ago, and even then he left nearly as soon as they both finished. He hasn't simply slept in the same bed as someone in… four years, probably. And that was with Price. It was a one time thing they have yet to discuss.

This is all without taking into account Simon's distaste towards contact, especially in a sexual manner. He dislikes even being naked in front of someone due to the fact that it makes him feel vulnerable. The act of sex itself makes him feel like he’s both the victim and the aggressor. He would never call himself a rapist, but the term still weighs heavy in his chest. It pops into his head any time things get a little too heated with a man at a pub, along with images of his hands forcibly being put onto a woman. Luckily he’s long since given up on endeavors like finding a stranger to shag. He technically has assaulted women before. Three, to be exact. He doesn't remember what their faces look like. He's fairly certain he watched anywhere but in their eyes on purpose. One had brown hair and a tattoo on her inner thigh, he remembers that. She bled. He started crying, apologizing. He knows she couldn't understand him. He hopes this doesn't make him a bad person. Or maybe he does. This uncertainty is what tears him up. Sometimes he wishes someone would just grip him by the shoulders and shout at him for all the horrible things he's done. Get it out in the open, maybe some confirmation would be good, as the ambiguity of his own morality is a subject he often ponders to a self-sabotaging extent. He knows that what he did to survive under Major Vernons and Roba’s hands doesn't represent him. He would have never, under his own volition, done anything like that; but, in the end, just knowing that he caused that sort of harm to anyone… it sickens him. 

And thinking about accidentally doing something like that to Johnny… it makes him want to never touch him ever again. Most days he can't even properly have a wank because that stupid bastard's face will present itself in his formerly anonymous fantasy, then that will quickly devolve into him being concerned about him somehow forcing himself onto the sergeant. And how does one even broach this subject when speaking to someone? There’s no casual way to say “oh, yes, hello, by the way I’m very worried about somehow raping you.” He would sound like a madman, more than he already seems. 

This is all in relation to Johnny's wellbeing. If Simon was considering himself, he might have to stay at least three meters away from Soap at all times. The last time he touched Ghost (a prolonged hold on his shoulder, paired with eye contact that made Simon feel as if Johnny was trying to crawl inside his skull) his skin burned for hours. He can't imagine the pain he’d be in if they were to, god forbid, cuddle. 

Besides, he would never want to burden someone like Johnny with someone like Him. He’s a lot to handle, which is why he does most of the handling on his own. Soap is privy to maybe two percent of Simon's issues, and even then the ones he does know about are surface level. He doesn't need to know anything beyond what he can extrapolate based on Ghost's somewhat bizarre behavior. Simons moderately damaging inner reflection and self awareness has begun to present itself as a problem. He's been in his own head a lot recently-- not when it's dangerous, as he's a good enough soldier to be able to turn that off in the field and the debrief room, but it has become a small issue when he's attempting to socialize. Or, more accurately, when someone is trying to socialize with him. Frequently he finds himself sitting, or standing, just… thinking. He thinks too much. 

Johnny sometimes helps. It's like he can sense when Simon is in distress, like a damn therapy dog. Then he just stands there and goes into some swear ridden spiel that has Simon forgetting his train of thought. Sometimes he wonders if he does this on purpose, but then he deems that too conspiratorial and self indulgent to be the truth. 

He’s gone over these points time and time again in his head, all the while he's got no idea if Johnny even likes men. 

He needs to find a hobby. 

A few card games later, Ghost decides it's time to head back to his room. He says it's because he's getting tired, but really it's because he doesn't want anyone to see him leaving the Sergeants room at this hour. He isn't concerned about his reputation—he's more concerned about Johnny’s. Sleeping with your superiors is already frowned heavily upon, let alone sleeping with The Ghost. Not that they were doing that, but nobody would believe them if they tried to explain themselves. 

Simon doesn't sleep that night. He lies awake, staring at his ceiling for hours until the light starts to peek through the blinds on the small window of his quarters. He checks the clock, then peels himself out of bed and starts to get dressed. He’s running drills today. Simon hauls himself through his usual routine of getting changed, walking a few paces around his room without socks, then checking the closet once before tugging his boots on and slipping out the door. He jingles the knob once, then twice to “double check” whether it's locked. He wanders through the sparsely populated halls towards the mess. He might go to the gym after getting some grub, but he hasn't fully decided.

Guys, I really need to rant about Metasusie rn. Like, I don't dislike thoses who ship it, but I have such an absolutly visceral hatred for the ship itself my hands are literally trembling right now. If you dont wanna hear me rambling about how much I hate it, then just pass. Chances are I won't be very polite and organised.

So as time progresses I keep seeing more Metasusie. I feel like now's a great time to remind people why this ship is so controversial in the first place by explaining why I and so many others dislike it. Here I go...

Okay. First off. Why the heck would you ship two characters if the only thing we know ever happened beetween them is one of them at the very least ordering (possibly more) the other to be captured, modified and enslaved against his will, and the others time we see thgem together, he literally can't interact of his own because of that, while she is either about to force him to exterminate his own friend, or she is straight up presenting him like he's a non sentient toy she's about to sell ??? Along with fact that Susie calls MK an it in the second cutscene , and that the only time we ever see them interact in game (albeit possibly not canon) is him running away from her, and her chasing him ?! The fact that some people wiew that as a cool starter to a ramantic relationship is is worrying to me.

I feel like some people ship Metasusie out of spite, if that makes sense. They see a ship that's hated on a lot and they want to play devil's advocate. I understand, really (my own "devil" has black, torn off wings) . But even then you still have to consider what makes the devil hated in the first place. There's a lot of wrong in this ship you just can't ignore.

Most of the fans ship them for natural reasons ; because they look cute together, or because of their common points, and they usually just ignore the implications it has. This is understandable, again, but, if you want to ship those two in a cute way, you have to staight up rip away all the unethical stuff. To do that, you have to undermine Susie's terrible actions (or pretend it never happened), to make her cute, to ignore her character. In other words, you have to woobify her. For Meta Knight, it's no less bad, because he's a victim of mechanisation, like many others, and implying it was'nt that important is just kinda dumb (If that was the case, why would the Haltman company be the game's villains anyways ?) . When I say you can't ship those two in that way, I mean that you have to either mischaracterize them heavily, or retcon what happened beetween them to make it work.

That, or they're sometimes homophobes who want to latch on the first heterosexual ship they see. They make those two stereotypical depiction of both genders. Those, are the absolute worse, for obvious reasons, and albeit they're not the only ones who turn Meta Knight and Susie into people they're not, they always do it in the worst possible way : making MK a strong, masculine knight character who can't feel pain and Susie a cute, feminine and smart scientist who needs to be protected and can do no wrong, so the pink character and the blue character are the most gratingly stereotypic ship to ever exist. I see it often, wether intentional or not. It's so wrong and sexist in both way and is probably the worst iteration of the ship to ever exist. Men can feel pain and have trauma, and women can do fucked up things for fucked reason and be fucked up.

This ship has yet another infortunate message. The Haltmans are obviously a metaphor for colonialists. A colonialist having romantic relationship with a person who was colonised, is basically what this ship is. And if you know the slightest bit about that in history, you've probably understood why I feel so icky about this ship, knowing this is a possible comparison.

There's also those who ship one sided, fucked up Metasusie. This is maybe the one of the two only ways to ship those two without mischaracterisation, and the only one I actally like. Not only because I love angst, but also because it actually acknowledges that the slavery, the kidnapping, the mind control, the colonisation, all of that, is fucked up, and that it should'nt be a relationship. (My own interpretation of this, if it interest you, is that Susie has such horrible trauma with her father that she does'nt know what a healthy relationship is anymore. In the absence of her father, she goes to the only person she has a speck of admiration for, and thinks it's love. In her skewed idea of love, the partner has to follow blindly what she says and constantly be under her control, so when he resists, she just think he needs to be "tamed" more. Meanwhile, MK is traumatised and just wants to escape. Eventually she learns that it's more coping than loving and leaves him alone.)

Altough. Some of those people treat the ship, in its unhealthy form, as a good thing. To them Soos and MK are inhuman people who love by hating. But like, unheatlthy relationships are not a good thing. I only like toxic Metasusie if it's treated as a bad thing.

Finally, some shippers actually give both Susie and Meta Knight character arcs, where she comes to understand she is wrong and he learns how to forgive her/cope with his trauma. Not my cup of tea, but honestly, that's based. Altough I like it (moderatly), I just don't understand why you'd ship that over stuff like Metadedede, where the characters have an at least friendly relation in canon.

That was long, but in the end, if I can't understand fully why it's shipped, I can stand Metasusie if it acknowledge both character's flaws and and Susie's terrible actions. It does'nt happen often however, as most instances I see are sadly just idealised, woobified, mischaracterised versions of them randomly loving eachother without context. I won't (and can't) stop people from shipping them that way, but I'll keep being against it.

Wow, after this, I actually kinda feel better. I ended up being more polite than I thought, too. I guess I needed to get this out of my chest somehow...

alr about the Rebesker post, after multiple people pointed the issues out, i decided to take it down, for context: i made a pretty heated post of my negative feelings on Rebesker (Rebecca Chambers x Albert Wesker). i was very dumb when it came to handling this topic (i was aggressive, i didnt word my reasoning wel, overal it wasn't a good post and something i'll refrain from doing in the future). i posted it roughly 5 hours ago but after coming home from school and rereading it again (+ some reblogs that also pointed out the main issues) i decided to delete it since i realized my fault. I JUST FUCKING FINISHED LAB RATS: ELITE FORCE AND. IT ENDS? LIKE THAT?????? I KNEW IT WAS ONLY ONE SEASON bc lets be real you cant beat lab rats and god knows wth theyre doing with the writing in elite force BUT THE CLIFFHANGER???? like i knew i was coming up on the last episode. i was perfectly aware of that. i think the way some ppl on here talk about shipping is annoying, i dont even like the word shipping. i dont like or dislike shipping, romance is just a type of relationship that is sometimes present or can be read into the shows/etc that i like. ppl talk about shipping like its an activity distinct from enjoying the media itself. idk does that make any sense. sure there are characters i think should kiss and ill get crazy invested in that but i dont call myself a shipper any more than you would define how you interact with media based on how much you care about idk parent child relationships. i just watch shows and what i care most about varies between medias. but i know some people DO treat it like its a separate activity and DO go into stuff looking for which two guys they can smush together. idk if this means anything i just think the entire way fandoms view and talk about romance is just annoying lol

Why i dont actively ship PPGxRRB:

I'm scrapping my drafted essay post about this for now because its really uncalled for and unnecessary. IDK sorry to anyone who looked forwards 2 it, but i just dont think i illustrate my point very well and more than half of it is lowkey a biased vent post and pure rambling. Either way this is the TLDR for the post you'll never see LOL.

But actually, I do ship PPGxRRB, i've just drifted away from it over the years. I think one of the biggest 'problems' i have with PPG x RRB is mainly with the portrayal of it. My main issue is with how a lot of people mischaracterize the RRB/PPG and completely deconstruct them as characters so that they can be love interests for the eachother and nothing more. One of my points in my scrapped post was that; I have no idea how an entire fandom managed to gender-bend the Bechdel test, but it is rare that i find PPGxRRB media where the RRB have actual lives, interests, hobbies, and friends that have nothing to do with the PPG. Half the time they can barely have a thought if it isn't about the PPG. As i said, Gender-bent Bechdel test.

Another point was that: ppgxrrb has gained a horrible reputation for itself over the years. Back in its "Glory" days, Toxic fans of the ships had bulldozed anything that differs from their favorite empty dynamics. Those usually being The Reds, Blues, and Greens. Nowadays i still see almost nothing in the realms of variety between creators interpretations of the ships. Almost every time i see a PPGxRRB post, it can fit into a set dynamic that the ship is already infamous for.

I want to be able to see the creators love and passion for their ships. I want to know how and why these characters ended up together. If a story is to be told, i want to hear it. I know that the majority of PPGxRRB creators are, by default, amateurs (they dont get paid and its not on a professional scale), but after seeing the exact same badly written love story hundreds , maybe even thousands of times with little-to-no variety, I've gotten bored and tired of people devaluing my favorite characters to be nothing more than overplayed dynamics and shipping fuel.

A lot of people like shipping because of the dynamics, but ship dynamics don't hook me in, and ive noticed that most PPGxRRB stuff is purely ship dynamics and nothing more. Theres nothing wrong with loving ship dynamics or being drawn to ships for their specific dynamics! I just dont care about dynamics, i care about chemistry and story. But most amateurs cant effectively show the chemistry or write the story, a lot of them can barely characterize the 2 characters in their ships.

FYI this isnt about anyone specific or even many recent fans of PPGxRRB. I've been in/around the online PPG fandom since before 2016, and a lot of my thoughts/feelings on the matter have a lot to do with stuff that happened over the years i've loved this series, and more specifically, The RowdyRuff Boys.

To be clear: When i say that they are mischaracterized, i'm not talking about HC's. I'm just tired of seeing the PPG and RRB dulled down into one-note personalities with stereotypical characterization and almost always no tangible character development. A love story is still a story, and a lot of shippers seem to half ass the "story" for favor of the "love".

I dont hate or even dislike PPG x RRB. I'm just really tired of rarely seeing people do the RRB justice, and i want these characters to be treated with the full respect that i think they deserve.

i dont know anything about red vs blue but i want in on this drama what happened what is restoration

The shortest possible version of this. Which is hard to do because this was a 21 year webseries with an absurd amount of background and moving parts to get into as well as a notoriously complicated story.

Restoration was the final "season" of Red vs Blue that to be frank should not have been able to release considering the company had been in gradual collapse for years prior to its announcement and release and most people had agreed the "true end" to the show happened in 2015 even though seasons would keep releasing until 2024. Restoration is not Terrible but it was clearly rushed and had the bulk of its content cut in order to make it happen at all before the company that was founded on its success finally shut down.

Grimmons is a pairing of two cast members which is so ubiquitously accepted as not just fanon but legitimate canon (agreed upon by the guy who made and acted one half of the pairing), like, not just as in everyone agrees they SHOULD be lovers, but like, they have just been stated to have fucked at least twice in series (one of these times got retconned but that itself is complicated so for our purposes can still be considered canon) and are actively portrayed as like, an old married couple who only isn't actually together based on a mutual respect for the current status quo and a general mutual dislike for Change and Emotional Communication. They are essentially in an unstated relationship in universe but what this translates to in real life is a solid 21 years of gaybait. The baiting had been ramping up in recent seasons (a writer for the show would drop his proposed Confirmation Scene that didn't make it in when the company announced its closure) and the trailer for restoration featured the two of them having a Meaningful Moment completely alone looking at the sunset in the place they met. This was The Moment right. Like the only moment they would ever have to do it, the moment they should do it, even if they did it in a kind of half assed way.

Not only did they not do it even though it seemed like they would (like. It had the exact buildup you'd expect and then it just. aborted) but at the end of the show one of them discharged the other form the army and they are separated forever. End of series. If this made you mad to read imagine how the oldheads felt. We felt bad. LOL.

The chucker v tuckington wars are honestly way easier to explain, Church and Tucker were close in early seasons so they were the popular ship for blue team, not as ubiquitous as grimmons but like, the obvious one, Plot Circumstances made it a lot more difficult to ship them, Church leaves, enter Washington who now has the closest relationship with Tucker on blue team, they have a dynamic that is so easy to ship it mostly manifests in fandom in ways that are boring as fuck (when they're not. Racist and ableist. But don't get me started on that.). Washington and Church don't really like each other which means you can't apply the throuple solution and everyone starts arguing about how like, Church had Tucker's heart first but Washington is better for him or whatever, like, very typical ship war shit. The truth is that all three of these men are terrible people and it doesn't matter who Tucker likes because his taste is dogshit either way. People started joking that whichever guy Tucker ends up having a Meaningful Moment with or about in restoration is the guy who wins the ship war but Tucker does not speak to or about either of them for the whole season. <3

huge horror game fan. this has some canon backing but it's really fun to me. i also think he's a huge scared cat about them. he and ritsu convince themselves they gave both themselves and shou's hamsters lavendertowne syndrome and they treat it deathly seriously.

It's not selfshipping itself I have that much of an issue with. It's something i dislike, yeah. But it's refusal to engage with the actual franchise that I rant about. The selfship areas just have a lot of overlap with that. I don't like selfship but I don't hate you for it. It's alright.

Don't be afraid - specifically within the context of the song itself rather than just the lyric, i guess ?? to explain it ?? unknown till the end is blatantly a love song and yet the music and vocals are so aggressive, then this line instantly followed by a guttural growl that i'd expect from heavy metal just goes HARD. i think it perfectly captures what i put as my favourite thing about him
