Three weeks pass and whatever the girls' schedule entail, Yuna's sister was always there. Coming in at the same time they wake up and leaving at the time they're heading to bed, some days Y/N stays over and takes the couch, Yuna and Lia insists everytime that the journalist crash can in their shared room with them but the later always refuses, saying that she doesn't want to intrude any more than she already had. The two idols roll their eyes at the statement every single time, Y/N spent enough time around them to make the other four members of ITZY feel as if they've known her their entire lives.

Y/N's spent enough one on one time with all the members that she's found out about their favorite foods, guilty pleasures, embarrassing child stories, and odd habits.

She's damn well sure that she's spent a lot of one on one time with all the members, specially a certain blue haired rapper.

"I'm telling you! She LIKES you!" You only hum in response as you chop vegetables to go with the stew you're cooking. Your sister sits with on the kitchen isle infront of you flairling her arms around and gesturing like a crazy preacher on the streets of America. You drop the knife and lean against the isle with your hands supporting your weight. "Yuna, full offense but you have the tendency to overthink even the most basic of things." The girl in question opens her mouth to argue, you reach over and shut it for her. "By tendency? I mean everytime there's something to think about."

Your sister swats your hand away as she voices out indignation at your teasing "You're my older sister! What kind of unnie are you, picking on me instead of protecting me?" You roll your eyes, turning your attention back to the task of chopping vegetables. "The kind who healthily exercises her right to pick on her little sister every once in a while." You hear a gasp of disbelief from behind you. "Healthi- You pick on me everyday!" You toss the chopped vegetables into the pot of boiling water, wiping your hand on the waist apron tied around your waist. "I didn't stutter, Yuna."

Ryujin walks into the dorm with bags in their hands with Yeji not far behind her. Yeji who was the only one responsible enough to wake up on time and actually stick to the grocery list and reign her in whenever she's getting sidetracked to aisles she has no business being in. She heads straight for the kitchen and the moment she lifts her gaze from watching where she's stepping, she stops in her tracks forgetting why she was heading there in the first place. Whoa she's fucking beautiful.

Y/N's leaning on the kitchen counter by the entrance, side profile being criminally stunning as she throws her head back to laugh at something. Ryujin's eyes widen as they take in every single detail about the girl infront of her, from her nose, to her mouth, and then down her neck, oh boy- Yeji crashes into her and she turns around to look at how. As it turns out, the leader had opted to carry the bags in her arms rather than in her hands. Stacked up on one another, the bags do a damn great job at Effectively blocking the leader's eyes and interrupting Ryujin from admiring the mastrpiece that was standing a few steps away from her. "Girl, move. You can gawk at your crush later!" The visually hindered member speaks. Ryujin thanks her lucky stars that she has yet to take off her mask, she's pretty sure her blush would've been noticed otherwise. "I'm not gawking!" She whispers back at the cat eyed girl.

Yeji rolls her eyes and before she could come up with a retort, Y/N interrupts the cat fight.

"YO RYEJI! You're finally home from the shopping and you brought in the bacon!" You push yourself off the counter and move towards the pair. Yuna follows your lead and where you gravitate towards Ryujin, she opts to help out Yeji. As you bend down to reach for the bags in the rapper's hands, she objects, your hand freezes in its spot just above her hand, your fingers brushing up against hers. You tilt your head up with an eyebrow raised in question. Your faces mere centimeters away from each other and the world around you seems to stop, as if no one but the two of you existed. Her eyes capture your attention like a flame draws in a moth. "It's okay... I'm not that tired, I'm not even tired at all, I'm sure I can handle putting these away myself."

You smile at her, bringing your fingers to gently clasp at hers, thumb slowly rubbing at the flesh below her thumb. Using your other hand to grab at the bags she was carrying, you stand up to your full height and bring Ryujin's arm up along with the bags. "You've done enough, let me handle it from here. I insist." Unbeknownst to the two of you, the oldest member and the youngest member had taken it upon themselves to exit the room as silently as possible after they had set the bags Yeji was carrying over on the counter closest to them. No one knows exactly when the two had taken their leave, but you and Ryujin jump apart when the sound of the refrigerator door opening pierces the air. With your hands on the groceries and Ryujin's on her chest above her heart, you both turn to the culprit to find Chaeryeong drinking from a carton of orange juice, unamusedly staring at you both. "Are you two lovebirds planning to help me put away these groceries or do I have to do everything myself?"

You open your mouth to respond but before you could utter out an affirmation, Ryujin beats you to it as she dashes over to the things Yeji had been carrying. You shake your head at the younger girl's antics, putting the groceries down on the isle, you tell the two that you'll drain the boiled vegetables for a moment before helping with the groceries.

Brunch time comes around and you call in the girls to the kitchen. Yuna is the first to answer your call, seeing you getting plates and utensils from various cupboards and drawers she jumps into action. Coming up beside you, she taps your shoulder and takes the plates as well as the utensils out of your hands. She smiles at you and tells you that she'll set the table for you, and that you should probably go drag the members out of their respective rooms one by one.

The first room you visit is your sister and Lia's room. Sure enough the other girl was sprawled out on her bed, dead asleep. This girl really does live by her code of "Sleep till the last minute" Waking her up was easy enough, keeping her awake was the challenging part. You had to pull Lia out of the room and sit her down on the dining chair yourself. Next up? Yeji and Chaeryeong.

You knock softly before peeking your head in, the sight that greets you answers the question of how they didn't hear you call out to them. Sitting cross legged on the bottom bunk is Yeji with her earphones on as she focuses on an English book, no doubt doing her best to improve her linguistic skills, you take a glance at the top bunk, Chaeryeong is nowhere to be found. You enter the room and you tap the leader's wrist, she jolts a little bit in surprise as she take sher earphones out. "Food's done Yej, time to eat. Where's Chae by the way?" The leader takes her book, uses the earphones as a bookmark and shutting it before she puts it beside her pillow. She stands up and the two of you make your way out of the room, you find out that Chaeryeong hit the shower. Planning to be squeaky clean before she eats lunch.

So you see Yeji off to the kitchen, before you make your way towards the final room. Ryujin's. Your hand hesitates just before yiu can touch the doorknob, questions and thoughts flooding your mind.

What is Ryujin to you?

She's someone you like spending time with.

Why? What is it with her that pulls you in?

Her natural chemistry when you're both with the group.

What do you want with her?

Isn't it a bit too rushed to be thinking of that right now?

I don't know.

The door opens and Ryujin bumps into you, snapping you out of your zoned out state successfully. She loses her footing, stumbling back a bit and you quickly step forward reaching out and catching her by slipping an arm around her waist. Her hands rest on your chest, just above your sternum and your faces are so close to each other that even your height casts a bit of a shadow on you both, you can still make out the details of her eyes. They eyes flick up and down between your eyes and your lips, your eyebrows furrow. There's an urge to lean in and press your lips against her, but you're not sure where it came from or if you should give in.

Ryujin's eyes settle on your lips, you hear her swallow and her left hand starts to move so slowly that you're afraid she can feel your heart racing, it makes its way up from your chest to the side of your neck, coming to rest on your nape. She squints a bit, a small contemplating hum leaving her lips before she starts to lean in towards you, stopping a few centimeters away from your lips. You let her wait, giving her a chance to back away should she want to, her hand puts pressure on your nape. You succumb and bring your forehead to rest against hers, your questioning eyes meet her half lidded ones, she breaks the heavy silence sround you with a whisper you never even knew you were dying to hear. "Kiss me."

Who are you to refuse? You start leaning in and this time it's her who waits for you to close the distance.

What is Ryujin to you?

She's someone you want to give this a shot with.

Why? What is it with her that pulls you in?

You don't really know why. But her personality,humor, looks, and sides of her you've yet to witness draws you in.

What do you want with her?

You want to know how her lips would feel pressed against yours.

Isn't it a bit too rushed to be thinking of that right now?

Maybe, but not once have you ever been a patient person in your life. Rush isn't new to you.

"Yuna's starting to wonder what happened." Fuck. You and Ryujin turn your head to the owner of the voice in alarm, Chaeryeong is staring at the both of you from a corner withca knowing smile on her face. She gestures with a thumb towards the direction of the kitchen, before dissappearing. You wonder to yourself just how long you and Ryujin had been standing in her doorway for, when it was Chaeryeong who had taken a shower, who was the one to come get you both. You and Ryujin slowly detach yourself from each other, you look at her and her head is bowed down, refusing to meet your eyes. She clears her throat before pointing to the space behind you. "Guess we shouldn't keep them waiting any longer huh?" You step aside to let her pass, and she speed walks towards the direction of the kitchen.

You run a hand through your hair, leaning against her doorframe as you take in a shaky breath. "Yeah, we really shouldn't." You shake your head before making your way towards the kitchen as well.

Brunch was filled with silence, Lia having just woken up beforehand, Chaeryeong chewing her food suspiciously slow, Yeji keeping her eyes trained on her plate, Yuna's eyes flicking between you and Ryujin with alarming speed, normally you and the the rapper would be very touchy with each other when it comes to meal time, subtly flirting with each other and taking on the roles of conversation starters. But today there's a visible distance between you and Ryujin, you know your sister knows that something's up and you bet your top dollar that Chaeryeong had spilled what happened. The girl never was particularly good at keeping secrets.

When the meal comes to an end, Lia groggily stands up the effects of sleepiness combined with a full stomach making her walk wobblier than a drunkard on a tightrope. Chaeryong turns alarmed when Lia gets up from her seat, quickly showing the last bite of her food into her mouth before muffling something inaudible and going to help Lia keep her balance. Yuna gets up and gets to work on washing the things used for cooking just to get them out of the dishes' way. Yeji asks if you guys can handle the dishes or if her help is needed, you tell her that you've got it, she smiles at you greatfully before taking her leave. You get up with the intention to start clearing up the table and as you reach for the plate infront of yours, a hand comes to rest on top of yours. You turn your head to your left to find Ryujin still refusing to meet your eyes. "I'll take it from here, you go on ahead and do whatever." You look towards Yuna who's still scrubbing away bacon grease from a pan before shrugging and thanking the girl beside you.

You walk towards your little sister, pressing a kiss to her temple "Hey I'm going out for now alright? I'm gonna go visit a few spots around the city, take photos and whatnot." Yuna smiles at you before shooing you away. You shake your head and make your way out of the kitchen, she laughs and bids you to be careful. To which you reply that you always are.

Once the sound of the front door closing reaches her ears, Yuna immediately shuts off the sink and turns to look at her group memeber with an unreadable expression over her face. "I'm going to cut to the chase here. You like my sister, correct?" Ryujin stops walking for a moments, looking at the dirty dishes in her hands before she sets them down in the sink. Although she figures that she owes it to the Maknae to look her in the eyes as they talk about her sister, it doesn't make it any less difficult when she does. "Yeah, you're right."

Yuna dries her hand on a kitchen towel located on a towel hanger nailed to a cupboard door below the sink. She shakes any left over water off of her hands before she crosses her arms, staring straight into Ryujin's eyes with nothing but unpredictable fire in her eyes. "Normally I would stay away from talks of your love lives, but yours concerns my sister. I want to know if this is just a small crush that you're thinking on burying or if this is something you're hoping to explore further." Ryujin stuffs her hands in the pocket of her hoodie, the Yuna infront of her right now isn't one she's ever encountered before. The maknae is usually very respectful and aware of the age boundary between her and the rest of the members, but the Yuna before her now isn't infront of her as simply 'Yuna'.

She's standing infront of her as Y/N's sibling. As someone who's got siblings of her own, she understands that Yuna wants to ensure that her sister's heart isn't going to simply be toyed around. The fact that Ryujin's older and a group member doesn't exclude her from the shovel talk, and she understands this. "If your sister would have me, this I'd like to explore this further with her by my side."

Yuna closes her eyes, and when she opens them the fire that was there before had vanished. Replaced with a look of worry and concern. "Then please take care of her. Y/N unnie means everything to me and I don't want to see her hurt." The nervousness wracking her body leaves Ryujin, replaced with bravery and dedication. She opens her arms, offering Yuna a hug which the latter accepts.

Ryujin holds the youngest member tightly in her arms, a promise leaving her mouth and taking root within her heart. "I promise you that everyday I'll be doing my best to be someone Y/N deserves." Yuna's worry doesn't vanish all at once, but it lessens because deep down she knows. Her sister and Ryujin would make a great pair.

(Lol it’s not a writing challenge wtf Louise - it’s a writing tag, but in my defense I made the graphics while waiting for my job interview and I felt like I was dying).

R U L E S | List five things that you, without fail, weave into or explore in your stories, whether it be specific themes or tropes, character archetypes, allusions to other literary works.

This is basically every story I’ve written. Thinking back, almost all the stuff I’ve written has included some type of (mostly emotionally) abusive relationship, whether it’s with a parent, a romantic partner, a friend, or some combination of these. It has long weirded me out that I had this fascination, but it made sense once I realised that some of my familial relationships are marked by, if not outright emotional abuse, then at least by a good deal of neglect and controlling behaviour. A lot of my stories explore the after-effects of abusive relationships, the damage they do to a person, and how those effects come to light when seen through the lense of a loving, supportive partner or friend. Case in point: Vittoria’s whole relationship to Carlo brings to light how messed up her youth was. Enzo’s relationships with Lorenzo and Gina make him stand up against abuse. Lia’s relationships with her brothers and later Teo do the same for her... it’s all over the place! (It would have cropped up in the sequel to CoM as well for Nadir). And if there’s one thing I want to say through my stories, it’s that it’s always okay to cut someone out of your life if they’re no good for you. Family or friends, it doesn’t matter - you never have to let people hurt you.

Nadir has anxiety which makes him seem like a brooding dark boi and Enzo gets anxiety attacks when he stands up to dad. If I’d ever made the direct sequel to CoM, Genevieve would have had some anxiety/PTSD related to the experiences in the Tournament as well. It’s no secret I deal with anxiety issues myself, so I add anxiety into a lot of stories. One thing I’ll never do, though, is make any character heal via insta-cure. Hence why both Enzo and Lia (and probably the whole family) are in therapy even years after leaving. Therapy, therapy for everyone!

Mmm, yes pleeease. There are usually elements of this to the stuff I write. If it’s not an outer conflict like “rich bois aren’t supposed to love thieves” or an inner one like “I shouldn’t love you because I’m too dangerous for you”, I love me some forbidden love. (Wow, that’s a lot of love). There’s something so delicious about characters who want each other badly, but they can’t or won’t be together... of course it aaaaall builds to that moment when they just can’t help it and give into the feeling. Oh, it’s just the best.

This is even more pervasive than even the abusive vs. healthy relationships in my writing. As mentioned before, Nadir looks like a brooding dark boi, but he’s really a soft nerd boi. Celeste is a pretty, fun-loving blonde who will absolutely wreck your shit. Carlo is a dangerous gang leader, but also the softest soft boi who loves his family and whose main kink is consent. Gina is a gun-toting badass lady, but she loves art and family and she’s terrified of being hurt. Enzo acts cold and arrogant, but is actually a soft boi who cares a lot about his sister. Lia is a pretty, spoiled rich girl who’s actually perceptive, intelligent, and hard-working. Teo is a grumpy grumpster who’s... yeah, you guessed it, he’s a soft boi. I could just have said “soft bois” here, but I think it holds true for so many of my other characters. It’s a good way to subvert expectation while also making a character likeable, I think.

I tend towards bittersweet endings. It’s not because I think happy endings are dumb or for kids - fuck that noise. Optimism and happiness are valid as heck, thank you very much. But I like just that little bit of bitterness in my endings, because I think the good stands out stronger in contrast to the bad. Case in point: in CoM Nadir isn’t completely bad and Genevieve gets a purpose other than the Tournament, but they’re also not together and it might before she can really be comfortable with him after what he did. In the ending to gen 1, Carlo and Vittoria are both alive and well, but they’re forced to live apart. For gen 2, Gina and Enzo are together and happy, but Enzo still suffers from anxiety and other after-effects of abuse, plus he’ll never be able to reconcile with his dad.

finished the story quests for bl3 (but barely any of the side missions yet) and i got...Opinions(tm)

(sorry if this doesn’t cut on mobile! also if you want to hide spoilers i’m tagging all my bl3 posts as “bl3 spoilers” so ny’all can blacklist it)

in no particular order:

i honestly wanted to give gearbox some slack and try my best to like this game bc i know people had probably unfairly high expectations for this game given all the build up, but they really just kept letting me down in everything but the graphics

said this before but overall, the characters are all Quite lackluster

^^ tyreen and troy included. adding the word "bitch" to every sentence does not automatically make it funnier

that being said, i super love their backstory + relationship with typhon/nekofeyo-whatever

the character designs are equally boring. moxxi was the only one who got a real improvement imo. lilith and maya are okay. rhys...i dont think i have to explain. lia...i dislike her hair; the black felt like it balanced out her design better and the white streak was interesting and cool but full white just looks bad tbh. zer0 feels less sleek and more bulky which doesnt fit him much. tina lost her pretty color palette and cute outfit. where are all the bright pretty color palettes in general???? there are other colors besides brown and black???? use them?????

ending of pre-sequel: “you will need all the vault hunters you can get” me: “ooh does that mean all the vh’s from previous games are back? i can’t wait to see everyone meet each other! :D” bl3: only nine of them come back, 3 of them die, the rest are involved in maybe one mission at most

boss fights. super. boring. and tedious. i mean this could be partly because i was playing on ps4 which made it extra not fun but if the only reason the fight is difficult is because they have a lot of health...it's not fun or challenging. i want fights like handsome jack with interesting mechanics. i want fights like angel with emotional impact. i want fights like the pre-sequel final boss that i forgot the name of with variation that isnt just "now they have an attack that shines bright lights in ur eyes, covers the whole arena, and can knock you down in one hit im looking at you traunt and killavolt". tyreens fight was the only one that i somewhat enjoyed because of this. all the others were just like "ughhhh again?"

im really enjoying melee amara playstyle. taking out badass enemies in four hits is my jam. this is just my fallout 4 playthrough all over again babey heck yea

typhon just wanted to be a good dad!!! he called tyreen starlight which is adorable!!! he did the best he could and tyreen hated him for it!!! i don’t blame either of them for that tbh, it makes sense from both their perspectives. tyreen definitely should have been more understanding, but she’s a dick so :/ (not saying this is a writing flaw, just a character flaw)

hammerlock needs higher standards in men but i really appreciate the undeniably in-your-face "fuck you" to all gamer dudes

i really. hate. how little the player character seems to matter in the story. in pre-sequel the vh's all had unique dialogue AND npcs would respond, sometimes even with character-specific lines. even when it was the same across vh's, it still felt like the npcs were interacting and speaking directly to them. the player character felt like a character of their own, rather than just a vessel for the player to do quests and kill enemies with or an errand runner for the important characters. i thought that was the direction they were going in with bl3 too but this just feels like bl2 only worse. there’s a separation again between you and the story and it feels like you’re just watching things happen. now ur not just a silent protagonist, but instead your a speaking protagonist who gets completely ignored. whats the point of including unique dialogue if it's not even acknowledged beyond an "uh-huh, moving on"?

sometimes the logic just feels kinda dumb. the twins killed/disabled maya and lilith in a heartbeat, they can literally disintegrate the most powerful beings in the universe, but the vault hunters? absolutely not. they must fight them for 40 minutes and then die.

after the fight with troy, no one even touched tyreen. there's no way they could have thought "yup she's definitely dead, no need to shoot her in the head or anything just to make sure. we didn't do anything to even hurt her, we just assumed." turns out she's 100% alive and gets up to start the apocalypse. who'da thunk! i know they wanted the end to seem more dramatic but it just seems stupid that they could have stopped tyreen like 5 missions earlier had they even the slightest bit of common sense.

lilith was one of the biggest threats to tyreen and troy's whole plan. of course they should leave her alive and simply steal her powers. let's kill the monk siren instead.

i know they didn't include this to give all players a fair experience instead of favoring sirens, but it kinda sucks playing a siren character and it's just completely ignored outside of ur action skill. tyreen and troy are sapping siren powers left and right, but they choose to leave you with yours. when you enter the eridian place with typhon tannis starts glowing because it has "something to do with sirens". what about the one standing right next to her? this applies to bl2 as well...jack i would willingly charge ur vault key for u pls why do u take lilith instead :'(

oh yeah speaking of tannis! i LOVE that she got angels powers. for some reason it just makes me really happy. maybe it's bc i think it's sweet that part of angel survived. maybe it's because it makes for cool fanart. maybe it's just cool. idk. also like that we got a solid explanation of what angel's powers were (influence over technology). i always thought her having control over it in bl2 might've been cuz it was hyperion tech and she had access to it same as she had access to the satellite from bl1. it wasn't super clear since it seemed like she could also materialize things like the ammo during her fight.

that also reminds me: all the dramatic reveals in this game felt kinda badly done.

the very first one with zer0/katagawa. like the whole time i was walking around looking for him i was trying to think why he might've turned/something must have happened to him or rhys. everyone was saying it was undeniably zer0. i finally meet him and take one look at his bright ass maliwan armor and its like. really. you couldnt have made it anymore obvious that thats not zer0. and then his helmet gets knocked off and surprise! it's not him. i totally didnt already figure that out with one glance 10 seconds ago. (maybe even earlier when you got glimpses of him around the building but i always missed it cuz i was looking at the fish tanks n shit)

also the tannis reveal. she was speaking to me in the same way that only known siren characters could. weird unexplained things were happening and seemed to be related to tannis. i wonder if she's a siren? surprise! she's a siren.

tyreen and troy knew about the great vault through some unknown means. typhon was talking about having a son and a daughter who he told stories about the great vault. typhon calls tyreen his daughter a while later and lilith acts surprised like honey ur a little slow, i figured that out several lines ago.

basically i'm not saying they were so obvious that i knew from the beginning of the game; i only figured them out a little before they were outright stated. but it was enough that it kinda ruined the effect and the characters acting surprised only when it was blatantly spelled out for them just made it annoying.

i feel like most of this is pretty negative, but i don’t mean that i hate the game and was miserable playing it. it was honestly okay...like i said i wanted to like it, but gearbox hates me specifically and killed/ruined all my faves just to spite me sooo...*waves hand back and forth in a sort of “ehhh” gesture*. i think my opinion on bl games from most to least fav would be: tftbl, bltps, bl2, bl3, and bl1. so it’s not the worst, but deeefinitely not one of my faves. i mean jack’s not in it (or if he is he doesn’t have a big role) so it’s already at a huge disadvantage. the ending was ok, it was all dramatic n stuff and it kinda makes sense i guess, but it was just about as okay as the rest of the game really. i don’t hate it but it’s not great either yknow?

Let’s start with the simple stuff first. what classes did you take in high school? which ones were you most and least excited for? did you have a favorite teacher that made the days more enjoyable?

Nic propped her leg up on a chair, leaning in as she listened to the question. People never wanted to talk about high school--brought up bad memories for some. Some just didn’t care. Not for Nic--comparatively, high school was a good part of her life. She preferred college, but she didn’t hate her last years in the public school system. The blonde shrugged. “Well, I mean--I had to take the core classes, y’know? But my high school was big enough where we had a lot of really cool electives in all sorts of subjects--like I once took a class called ‘American History through Music”’and that was sick as fuck. I also took one on the World Wars. I liked history a lot back then. I guess I still do--but I don’t have a lot of time to sit and learn anymore. That’s why I’m big on documentaries. I mean, yeah, Liam of course--but also I like learning.” She paused, humming while she thought about her classes. “I hated English. Like what a pointless class--why would you have to learn about a language that you already speak? I mean, yes, i know, it’s not actually important. I think Lia has shared with me a few times the joy of what words mean--but i don’t know. I just never could figure out why anyone would want to spend more time than they had to writing papers or reading books. Maybe if i had taken a creative writing course or two--but nah. Give me AP Gov any day--or even trig. I was good at trig.” She paused. “Nah, teachers liked Liam. He was charismatic and charming, good at sitting and listening. School was never hard for me, but I didn’t possess the talent of sitting still for very long. I think I was...a sophomore in college when I first got diagnosed with ADHD. Did you know that ADHD often shows up different in women than men?” Nic nodded. “Yeah--its wild. Girls are significantly less likely to get a diagnosis growing up, which means that their symptoms go untreated and unsupported for crazy long periods of time--like sometimes 20 years. I think that’s why I really struggled in English--because the subject didn’t interest me and like hell i could just sit there and read something. But nah, teachers and I never bonded. Which is fine because I still did well in school. It just took some extra effort.”

and now, outside of the classroom. did you participate in any extracurricular activities like sports, band, or other clubs? were you apart of the prom planning committee or did your parent always sign up to chaperone field trips? or did you bolt home or to work at the end of the day?

“Oh hell yes. I was all about the extracurriculars. I did archery, cheerleading--don’t laugh--worked on the school newspaper for a year, managed the lacrosse team for a year, volunteered to be a mentor for incoming freshman and, of course, worked. Anything to stay out of my house. I mean, I loved Liam but my dad and I are like oil and water. He wanted me to be like Liam so badly--and I just...couldn’t. One, I wasn’t a guy--and that was disappointment enough for him. But I wasn’t Liam and spending time around dad just...it was so much pressure. So I tried to focus my time elsewhere. and I liked being busy--my brain enjoyed that piece. It was like my environment finally matched how fast my brain was working. Even cheerleading--the sport that made me a wear a skirt--was fun. Because nothing is better than proving a bunch of stupid high school boys that yes, cheerleading is a sport. a hardcore, badass sport. But if I had to pick a favorite, it would be archery. I think it’s because I got to teach it to the kiddos at camp later on, but also--like how powerful is it to be able to pull back on a bow and let an arrow fly through the sky and get a bullseye? Like it’s badass.” Nic grins at the memory. “Oh, and then seeing those kids at camp--especially the ones who struggle with who they are and their self-confidence--light up when they hit the target? the pride they have in themselves for something they’ve done? That shit’s an unreal high.” 

a night to remember. did you go to prom? if so, did you have a date or fly solo, and was it a good time where you danced all night, and what were you wearing? if not, did you have an ‘anti-prom’ party, or why else did you decide not to go? what about other school dances or pep rallies?

The blonde lets out a laugh and nods, thinking about the memory. “Oh yeah-- I definitely went to prom. I mean, I think I was always going to--but I don’t think I anticipated having a date. And definitely not winning prom queen, but that’s Malik for you. The kid was like the closest thing to a celebrity in school--I mean, I think so. He was the star jock and you know how high schoolers get about their sports. But no, Malik and I are good friends--super close. I love that guy, he’s such a good one. So of course I was going to say yes when he asked me to go with him. I’m pretty sure half of my squad was jealous, but like...that whole thing never made sense to me. The whole jealousy thing.” It sure as hell does now though. She thought bitterly, her own situation appearing back in her mind. “Anyway, we went as friends. I didn’t expect to win prom queen--hell, i didn’t even know people knew who I was. Weirdest experience ever to put a tiara on. But honestly--prom was kinda fun. Not kinda, I really enjoyed it. Malik and I did end up kissing, but it was one of those kisses where you realize, at the end of it, you’re way better off as friends than anything more? Not that the kiss was bad, not at all.” She laughed, shaking her head. “I wore this red dress with a slit up the side and I had never in my entire life though I’d wear something like that. It looked good though. Like really good. All that cheerleading paid off I think.” Another chuckle came out of her lips. “As for pep rallies-- I was in them so of course I was there. And I liked the energy of them. I’ve always liked big energy spaces--concerts, pep rallies, sporting events. It feels like--at least for a moment--you’re all connected by something greater than yourself. Maybe that’s like my church. I don’t know. But yeah, I liked pep rallies.”

some more of the hard hitting q’s. who did you sit with at lunch? did you keep the lock off your locker or decorate it? were your headphones always snaked through your sneeve? was cutting class a normal occurrence or would you never dare? did you ever get detention?

“I mean, I don’t think I was ever popular--but I always had a place to sit with someone. It was either with Liam and his friends--I guess they were also my friends, but I met them through Liam so it’s hard for me to associate them as just mine. Sometimes with my squad, but not often. I didn’t care for the dramatics of dates and boys and clothing talk. But every so often we had a good discussion on things that I did care about--sometimes it was on women’s rights, though that was a lot of Sammi repeating what her mother told her about feminism (not that it was wrong, but it wasn’t Sammi’s words, that was sure) or the fact that child workers were making the clothing they had talked about the previous day. I liked those conversations the best. But even still, it was usually me shooting the shit with Liam and our friends. I loved those guys so much, y’know? I still keep in touch with a lot of them--some have families, some just got married. In fact, I am going to Tate’s wedding in a couple weeks. Its so weird to think they’re just now getting married and...” She trailed. Maybe now wasn’t the time for that thought. “Detention? Oh yeah. Me and Mrs. Huxley were good pals by graduation. Mostly it was about cutting class--but everyone once in a while she’d catch me with a...special someone in an empty hallway. Ok, so it only happened twice and I never told Liam because he’d kill me if he knew. So I guess,” She looked up at the sky and chuckled lightly. “Surprise?” 

upward and onward. what did you want to be when you were sixteen? was there a career path in mind, a certain college, another route worth taking? were you excited to see your high school in the rearview mirror or was moving on bittersweet?  if you graduated, was it scary or exciting or a mix of both? did you end up where your younger self expected you to?

"Well, when I was really little, I wanted to be a sideline reporter for the Bears. Or a commentator for the Cubs. Something to do with sports, absolutely. I could never imagine leaving this city--not in a million years. Even at 31, the city still surprises me daily and i love that fact the most. You never know who you’re going to meet--its a giant present box you wake up in every morning. How could anyone want to leave that?” She grinned, tapping her foot. “But at 16 I think I had let go of that dream and set my sights on the Academy. Police academy. I did, briefly, think about enlisting. Thought that if I wanted to break stereotypes and gender roles, I could make a huge splash in the military. But something about that whole world--I couldn’t take the plunge. I think I wanted to support my community, keep them safe, make my home a home for all.” She sighed. “So I was going to be a cop. Plus Liam was already doing that and I couldn’t let him have all the hero glory.” She winked, smirking. “I stayed in state--in city--for school, saved me some money and I already knew the area. In fact, I didn’t really ever leave Chicago. Which, makes me small minded to some i’m sure--but why do I need to leave when the world seems to flock to chicago? Just because I never lived anywhere else doesn’t mean I haven’t been challenged to grow.” Nic shrugged. “But yeah, like I said college was probably my favorite time in my life. Like hands down. I mean how could it not be? Killed the beer pong scene, met all sorts of great people, honed my skee ball skills even more, learned some awesome things, found the love of my life--got married.” It was so much simpler at 20. So much simpler. When did everything go so wrong? “Yeah, sorry--this was about high school. Uhm--wait, what was the question again?”

and last but not least. if you could tell your younger self one thing - what would it be?

“You’re a strong cookie, Nic. Life is going to wreck you down to your core but don’t ever think it’ll destroy you. You’re too damn stubborn to let that happen--and that is not a bad thing.”

after having posted two dance covers from convex, she decided that her entry for the dance contest should be something different. yes, it was girl group related. 

honestly, had it not been for the overwhelming attention from her boom boom cover, she probably wouldn’t be as determined to join this contest. she didn’t post it as early as some other coverists did, but she managed to at least post it in less than a week from when it was released. that was something, right? and had it not been for her recording it at the top of some mall parking lot hours before it opened, making awkward eye contact with each passing car that was searching for a place to put their car, she wouldn’t have even thought that she could be able to do this and get attention from it. 

it was cold. it was awkward. but in the end, if she was able to get attention on the internet from that little bit of suffering, who says she wouldn’t be able to do this? 

instead of going outside to record her covers, however, she decides to stay in the comfort of her home while her parents were not around. she didn’t tell anyone she was thinking of joining this. it was frankly because she didn’t think she needed to. she didn’t care whether her parents had anything to say against it or whether her friends would give her advice on what to do for her own performance. she thought about telling daniel, but she thought against it. the last time he didn’t tell her something “huge”, he became a trainee as a result of it all. (sure there were a few bumps in the road, but she can still beg him to get her a signed convex album at the end of the day so…)

though her parents weren’t home, she was in a bit of a time crunch. she made sure that the guest room was clean enough to be a good recording space for her. since she wasn’t boujee on her own, she had to settle for some natural lights as well as the lighting that the room provided her with. perhaps one day she would be able to afford box lights, but today was, unfortunately, not the move. 

she’s lucky that the time limit was just 90 seconds because that meant she could learn a choreography quickly in order to turn in the video right before the deadline. though she’s a natural procrastinator (who isn’t these days?), she wants to make sure she gets a good shot. if anyone does this song before she does as an entry, she knows that she’ll probably have a less likely chance of winning. she did not want to let this cuteass look go to waste by being compared to someone else. that’d be a nightmare. 

not only did she not have much to learn for the video, but she also actually had time to teach herself the moves rather than put it off and stress about it on the due date. since csats are over and she’s already turned in her apps, all she really needed to do now was wait to see what her future will become. if she were to go on her application portal for seoul national again, she was sure she would still see the familiar “waitlisted” on her application. so rather than stressing over that, she went back to dancing more often in order to get the negative vibes away. 

that’s why she’s here. maybe unlike that dumb school, she could be able to get an answer that determines where her life will go. whether it be the same old life she has been living before or one that was no different from her daydreams, at least mbc could let her know where she’d go. 

like her past few covers, she records with the same dslr camera she’s used before on the same tripod that has been there since her adore u cover. however, like boom boom, she was doing this cover on her own. she wasn’t a huge fan of mamamoo moomooma, but she wouldn’t deny that “hip” lip was a goodass song. it carried the badass energy that mina basically wanted to become, not to mention the choreography was made by the lia kim and minny park. that’s already a win in her book since she was basically in love with their dances. 

with the help of garageband, she was able to make a good audio for the parts of the choreography she wanted to cover for the video. it’s for moves that she thought looked impressive enough for her to be able to impress not only the audience but herself as she dances to them. whenever she does cool moves, she feels a little more badass than she already was prior. though she wished the dance break in the bridge could’ve gone a little harder, she knew that she was going to have fun with doing the rap part in the bridge. her lip-syncing should be enough to fool people into thinking she looks like she could rap. 

though it’s more than one take, she still tries her best in dancing as if she was THE main bitch on the block. that was the main message of the song, anyway. even if other people are against what you do, you should still continue being the person you are. you should own that. FUCK THE HATERS! the fact that she was dancing to a song about that made her so excited.

as she finishes her last take with the thought of no mistake, she turns off the music, turns off her camera, and takes the sd card out of it to put into her laptop. it was the same old editing process with the same old cheap editor, but she was willing to find a way to make it look as good as it could possibly be. it’s not just for her rising amount of subscribers. it’s for a broadcasting channel, too.

5x18, well this ep was divisive. N origin story was mostly good. I had a couple of issues w/it but overall I enjoyed it. We got to see how N truly was her father’s daughter. I thought Lia was cool. The intro to the N & RF ship made sense. We saw how I&N did have a loving ship, it just that I was a helicopter parent more than anything. I’m sure that caused issues as N got older esp teen yrs. I liked Godspeed, our 1st speedster villain in a while. Didn’t like his story tho. I was disappointed 1/2

that was all we got from fut I. That was the only POV we got abt her dampening N powers. Fut I didn’t tell N a lot about her father. B in his feelings the whole ep. B&I not on the same page w/N. We understand more abt why that is w/the del scene. TF around. The vid msg fr B was sweet. B talk w/N abt how she kept going back was valid bc that’s my issue too, it didn’t make sense. B taking N back to the fut was cold & ooc but it was for plot reason (the fight) B confront w/RF, loved that scene 2/2

I remember enjoying “Godspeed” more when it aired, because it was considerably better than the previous few episodes, and I had hoped that the energy of the episode would reinvigorate the show, especially as it aired after the spring hiatus period. However, now I think that he episode actually is pretty sloppily pieced together, narrative-wise, as there was every opportunity to develop Nora’s arc in the future and to give Godspeed a badass entrance, and instead, the episode was simply focused on showcasing how Nora and Reverse Flash’s alliance came to be. Because at the end of the day, that was Nora’s point: to be a plot device to deepen, heighten, and personalize the longstanding enmity between the Flash and the Reverse Flash. Still, I agree that it completely made sense why Nora turned to Thawne: in order to figure out how to defeat Godspeed, as she did not know any other speedsters who could help her. 

I loved Lia, and I wish that we saw more of her, but that would have presupposed a much more developed arc in the future. Once again, Lia’s death propelled Nora to feel more alone than ever and to be further isolated for Thawne to manipulate her. Thus, Lia’s appearance was tied to the end goal. I do think that this episode was considerably better than the previous like four installments, but I just wish that instead of demonstrating just how much Nora’s story is tied to Thawne’s re-entry into the story, the future and the world of 2049 was properly developed. I still think that it’s absurd that the narrative never gave future Iris the chance to explain why she had the power-dampening chip placed in Nora, even though, as I’ve mentioned before, the reasons are obvious: Cicada II, a meta-human serial killer, is still at large, and Barry disappeared. But again, the narrative was uninterested in this future; it was uninterested for the sole reason that this future was eventually erased in the finale, and the insertion of the power-dampening chip into the narrative was simply to create drama and traumatize Iris in the present. 

Iris was evidently a helicopter mother in the future. When she could not get ahold of Nora, she phoned the Flash Museum in order to reach her daughter, and it’s unsurprising that after she lost Barry, she would constantly be hovering over Nora. But she still brought Nora up, showering her with love and affection at every turn, which is why the way in which Nora’s memories were warped in 5x12, to the point that Iris was depicted as cold and distant, was both confusing and highly problematic to me. I did like the confrontation between Nora and Iris in 5x18, but there was so much more that needed to be hashed out with regards to the power-dampening chip. 

Barry’s message to Nora had me in shambles. Such a sad and beautiful moment. 

Godspeed was a complete dud. I’m not surprised that he didn’t live up to the hype, but even I’m perturbed how poorly he was crafted as a villain, especially because everything about V-9 failed in season 2, and so I have no idea why the writers chose to make V-9 addiction another villain’s origin story. 

I agree; my problem was why Nora kept going back to Thawne, even after she learned all that he had done. She forgave him so quickly, which still angers me, after two, out-of-context conversations with her mom and dad, respectively, about forgiveness, when Nora has always been characterized as kind of unforgiving, due to all the anger she’s bottled up over the years. It was all for plot reasons, which is my main issue with season 5: constantly sacrificing strong character moments and having characters act OOC in order to justify a particular plot point. Once again, it was OOC for Barry, the most forgiving person in the world, to run his daughter back to 2049 and unceremoniously leave her there, especially before consulting Iris. However, I agree that Barry and Thawne’s confrontation at the end of the episode was fantastic, and it was probably my favorite scene in the episode.

The Inevitable Saint Seiya Rewatch, Episodes 16-19

i am legitimately unsure how to respond to seiya fucking murdering a lady

- Hyouga, why the fuck would you leave your invincible rosary at Ikki's grave. TAKE THAT SHIT TO MU AND HAVE HIM RESEARCH IT HADES WILL NOT STAND A CHANCE

- ah yes, time for delicious toei filler

- In all seriousness, this filler is goofy and ridiculous as fuck, (OH NO THE BUGS ARE STEALING MY COSMO!!!) but I actually do like some of the character moments a lot, and I like the idea of the core group + Saori having time to bond and really become a team before shit starts really going down, and before Saori realizes she's a goddess.

- I have to wonder, though, if you're going to make filler to try to buy time while Kurumada smokes weed and makes shit up, why would you go with a really obvious "evil Pope" plotline? Seriously, it should be super obvious that eventually the manga is going to have its own plans for the Pope and Sanctuary, since he was a big figure in the first chapter/episode. Like, if the anime went to do completely its own thing, that'd be fine, but the halfway measure where it tries to weave weirdly back into the manga is just, uh, strange.

- Not that projecting Saga onto Toei's Evil Pope (complete with Evil Harem!) isn't the funniest fucking thing, don't get me wrong. Wait until they find out how much he loves being an owl!

- I mean, yeah, the montage of trainees dying horrifically by the hundreds is brutal and disturbing, but... is it really that much harsher than the picture we get of regular Saint training, considering LOL NINETY DEAD KIDS WHOOPS? I dunno...

- Marin and Shaina are both legitimately really cool characters. Saint Seiya ladies in general are cool as hell, you just wish that they got more focus, Saori included.

- The way Toei tries to inject RACISM!!! as another reason why Sanctuary evil feels a little weird, considering that, like, half of their Gold Saints aren't from Greece either...

- A wild Aiolia appears! The early stealth appearances of the Golds are a lot of fun. (Imagine how much more fun they could be if they were actually seeded in with, like, intent!) At this stage if you're watching blind you probably have no idea to make of this guy, who is also the narrator for the episodes...? It doesn't feel like he's obviously been set up as a "future opponent", but he's also not going out of his way to oppose the bad guys, either... but he does seem to be Marin's friend, so hmm...

-  It just seems like the kind of thing that'd be fun to play with, expectations-wise, if you're going to revise the series with hindsight in mind. In a way that, you know, gender-swapping Shun is not. What? Did I say something?

- Man, though, a Silver Saint like Shaina who is willing to shit-talk a Gold like Lia to his face... yikes. That's sort of nuts. You really do get no respect around here, do you, Aiolia...?

- have i mentioned lately that i'm in love with saori

- "Why are they after the Gold Cloth?" UH, BECAUSE IT'S A GOLD CLOTH, GUYS? HYOUGA, SHIRYUU, YOU TWO WERE TRAINED BY FUCKING GOLDS. SEIYA YOU'VE LIVED HALF YOUR LIFE IN SANCTUARY. YOU SHOULD UNDERSTAND THIS IS KIND OF A BIG DEAL?

- I'd loooove to see a more elaborate process of Saori slowly realizing and coming to terms with being Athena. More Saori content in general, pls.

- I really like seeing the Bronzies do stuff like run around town doing "normal" activities, like Shun jogging, though! Shun is cute! CUTE! I even like seeing Seiya hanging around with the orphanage kids and setting up Miho for extreme disappointment.

- SAORI STANDING UP TO AND SASSING A SAINT WHO JUST BLEW HER HOUSE UP BY HERSELF I CAN'T IMAGINE BEING THIS BADASS GOD

- her expression change when seiya shows up though hnnnnng

- The setup is dumb filler, but I like the underscoring that Saori is HARDCORE (ignore me, protect the Cloth!), the Bronzies meeting up to discuss what they should do, and Seiya's not-super-personal rationale at this point for going to rescue Saori. I actually do think their relationship has nice progression, the fact that ideally there would have been more focus on Saori realizing her Foundation is pretty fucking evil aside.

- wait, you guys are going with hyouga's plan? seriously? oh shit..........

- AND THE CRYSTAL SAINT APPEARS. MY NEMESIS

- oh my god i want to see camus demonstrating this hilarious ass leg freezing technique. 'donk' sound effect and all. why would you deprive me of this

- i like how even the crystal saint, someone who is obviously defined as very much a 'nice/good saint', will cheerfully watch his student get mauled by a polar bear as part of his training though

- I'm not sure if it's more plausible that CRYSTAL SAINT failed to warn Hyouga that "hey, even if you freeze their legs, they can still punch you" or if Hyouga heard and just forgot...

- Shiryuu and Kiki are too late to reach the cave, watching them fly away in a helicopter because this is a filler arc. Wait, Sanctuary uses helicopters? Is there a helipad in Saga's house? Is it equipped with a personal bath? I need to know these things, dammit!

- I would seriously watch an entire fucking episode of just the Bronzies and Saori sitting in a room together discussing battle plans and other serious business, punctuated by Seiya and Saori occasionally flirting, and Hyouga occasionally invading Shun's personal space. A+++ quality episode right there.

- poor shaina, getting filler villain-ized. but on the other hand, i kind of like her more in the role of 'ruthless and threatening villain/supporting character' as opposed to having a crush on seiya, ngl.

- Saori shitting on Tatsumi is always the greatest thing. But even that aside, even with the GHOOOST SAAAAINTS, I... like the idea of more elements of the Graude Foundation and their interactions with the actual world getting involved in this conflict?

- I also really like Saori already showing she's growing up and changing the way she thinks. She has this perpetually troubled air about her even in the Ikki arc, so even though there's not as much focus on what's going on in her head as there SHOULD be, it's plausible she's really mulling things over, re-evaluating them, and internally struggling so she can be up to this task she doesn't fully understand. Rather than being smug about Graude's capabilities like Tatsumi and like she was in the early episodes, she's already thinking about the impact of their actions on the world at large. Because she rules.

- Really wish we had some aspect of her more directly confronting the fact that her grandfather was an evil fuck, but it's one of those things I feel like I can probably headcanon too, I suppose.

- i like how seiya is sitting there playing sad guitar and hyouga and shiryuu huddle together and are just like "man seiya's guitar sucks" “i know right”

- Saori's growth is great because she really feels like an actual character to me? There's an awkwardness about how she's trying to approach the Bronzies and bond with them that feels really organic and endearing, but she's trying very hard. I really like touches like Saori trying to say the reason she came was because she was worried about them, and Hyouga and Shiryuu sort of exchanging this skeptical glance. It's what makes things on Saori's end sort of easy to 'headcanon', so to speak.

- I love this whole idea of Saori randomly chucking her jewelry into the ocean to 'show her appreciation'. Because it's so fucking weird and awkward. This is a gesture that doesn't actually mean anything to the Bronzies - they're totally like "huh? uh, okay" - and objectively it's a dumb useless thing to do, but you can tell she, as a young girl, has really been wracking her brain over how to SHOW that she's growing to care about them, and... and came up with this? Uh, it seemed like a good idea maybe? And her self-consciousness continues to come through, the way she can't even look at the Bronzies as she explains what she's trying to say is that their lives are more important than any Cloth.

- In growing this way, Saori is already vastly different from her grandfather and even Sanctuary, who obviously didn't value life at all - but Saori is trying to figure out and navigate this new way of thinking and caring on her own. Of course it'll be clumsy as hell, but there's also a real earnestness to it. Saori is so great...

Marvel’s Eternals Trailer Breakdown: Who Are The New Characters of the MCU?

Marvel’s Eternals trailer is here, and with an all-star cast and an Oscar-winning director (in the form of Chloe Zhao) it looks like an ambitious, surprisingly cerebral new addition to Marvel Cinematic Universe lore. It doesn’t reveal much, but what it does is more than enough to make us hopeful for all the cosmic surprises that MCU Phase 4 has in store for us.

Watch the Eternals trailer here if you haven’t already…then we’ll get to talking about who all these cool new characters are!

And here’s the official synopsis, courtesy of Marvel Studios:

“Marvel Studios’ Eternals welcomes an exciting new team of Super Heroes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The epic story, spanning thousands of years, features a group of immortal heroes forced out of the shadows to reunite against mankind’s oldest enemy, The Deviants. So who are all these cool new characters joining the MCU? We’ve got a breakdown for you here.

Richard Madden as Ikaris

Eternals is going to give us a veritable Game of Thrones reunion with Richard Madden as Ikaris, the most famous member of the Eternals. Of course “most famous” is relative when dealing with Marvel creations this relatively obscure, but hey, it worked for Guardians of the Galaxy, it’ll work here.

It’s not yet clear exactly what everyone’s power sets will be like in this movie, but in the comics, Ikkaris had the powers of flight, energy projection, super strength, and limited teleportation. Like most of the characters in this trailer, Ikaris was created by Jack Kirby in 1976.

With him in the above photo is…

Gemma Chan as Sersi

Sersi is a powerful sorceress, and the member of the Eternals with perhaps the most love for humanity, and the trailer hints at that by seeing her walking among regular folks in different time periods. We’re also willing to bet that she’s the Eternal most likely to pop up in other MCU movies, as the character has been a card-carrying member of the Avengers in the comics.

Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo

Another Jack Kirby creation (albeit one who didn’t make his way into the pages of The Eternals comics until 1977), Kingo has a power set similar to Ikaris. In the comics, he became an action movie star, although based on the brief glimpse we get of him in this trailer, he may have opted to become a Bollywood actor instead. Check out Nanjiani’s badass Marvel-ready physique!

Lauren Ridloff as Makkari

Every good super team needs a speedster, and what’s better than a speedster? A nigh-immortal one! Like Quicksilver, Makkari (note the similarity in name to “Mercury”) has been known to be a little bit impatient thanks to the gift of speed. Fans of comics to screen adaptations will recognize Lauren as Connie from The Walking Dead.

Anyone spot any MCU Easter eggs in this reading room? One thing is for sure, that isn’t Dane Whitman’s Black Knight armor…because we saw that in a museum in Spider-Man: Far From Home!

Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos

Phastos is a relatively recent addition to Eternals lore, first appearing in 1985 where he was created by Peter Gillis and Sal Buscema. Phastos is an engineer, inventor, and weapons master…all useful skills when you’re practically immortal. Here he seems to be using his innate cosmic abilities to create something wondrous and beautiful.

Fans of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (and really, who ISN’T) will know this isn’t his first trip to the Marvel Universe, having voiced Jefferson Davis in that film.

Salma Hayek as Ajak

The voice you hear in the trailer is that of Salma Hayek as Ajak. The original comics lineup of the Eternals was pretty male-heavy, and Ajak was portrayed as a man on the page. One of the key figures of the early Kirby comics, Ajak has been worshipped as a god at various points in history.

Lia McHugh as Sprite

Sprite may look young, but they’re as ancient, wise, and wily as the rest of the team. Think of Sprite as the trickster of the team (at least if the comics are anything to go by), and their antics could cause havoc for the Eternals’ place in the MCU.

Don Lee as Gilgamesh

You’ll note the similarities of many of the Eternals’ names to mythological gods and warriors. That’s no accident, as it’s generally accepted that these characters’ adventures were interpreted into folklore and mythology over the centuries. Here, one of the oldest recorded stories in human history now has a place of sorts in the MCU. Here he’s played by Don Lee, and if you haven’t seen Train to Busan yet, you should just go ahead and fix that immediately. Thank us later…it’s one of the best horror movies of the century.

In Eternals comics, Gilgamesh was known as “The Forgotten One” for some time, but it was ultimately Sprite who convinced him to return to the fold. He adopted the name of Gilgamesh “officially” when he joined the Avengers for a time. Perhaps it’s no accident that our best look at him in this trailer comes when the team is having a discussion about who will lead Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in the wake of Tony Stark and Steve Rogers.

This version of Gilgamesh was created by (wait for it), Jack Kirby, and first appeared in the comics in 1977.

Barry Keoghan as Druig

Another Kirby creation, Druig is Ikaris’ cousin. Described as an “aloof loner” in the film’s synopsis, Druig has a checkered past in the comics, and could cause some trouble at some point.

This isn’t Barry’s first brush with a comic book-related project. At one point he was set to star in the long in-development and troubled TV adaptation of Y the Last Man, and also has a role in the upcoming The Batman.

Angelina Jolie as Thena

Warrior, scholar, and all-around badass Thena is another potential leader of the Eternals, although in the comics that has brought her into some conflict with Ikaris from time to time.

Kit Harrington as Dane Whitman

Remember that Game of Thrones reunion we promised? Well, it’s here in the form of Kit Harrington’s Dane Whitman. But Marvel fans may recognize the name of Dane Whitman as belonging to the heroic Black Knight (another occasional member of the Avengers…hmmmm…there’s a lot of those in this trailer). We wrote more about the history of Marvel’s Black Knight here.

What else is hiding in this trailer? Well…

Is That a Celestial?

If you look very closely in the fiery part of that volcanic eruption, it seems there’s a giant figure there. Could this be one of the Celestials, one of the giant beings who travel the cosmos conducting experiments on the inhabitants of various planets? And speaking of which…

What are these two up to?

That sure appears to be a partially formed human body in the background there. Is this a hint that the existence of super powers in the MCU is a result of cosmic intervention by the Celestials?

We’ll find out when Marvel’s Eternals opens on Nov. 5.

Uhm Jung Hwa “Ending Credit” MV Review

~The Song~

Ending Credit is a bop, sis. A lowkey, melancholy bop.

But a bop, nonetheless.

Ms Junghwa might have played racketball with my wig with Ending Credit.

She might have run up on my ass with a razor and faded me with Ending Credit.

I might need surgery cause I'm missing the first layer of my skull cause of Ending Credit.

But, you know… A bitch isn't mad!!!

Uhm Junghwa has a voice that you don't really hear a lot of in K-Pop. Her tone is very airy, but she lacks any of the brightness that the typical vocalist has in spades. She has a thinner tone than makes her voice easy to layer and stack, but you know it's her singing. Overall, she has a very distinct voice and after 25 years in the game, she's definitely learned how to harness it to great effect.

Ending Credit, like I mentioned above, has a very sad, melancholic vibe to it. It's a rather upbeat song, but it's more "dancing with tears in my eyes" than PSY's New Face. This is partly due to the New Wave/NuDisco style production, courtesy of Primary and SURAN (who are the absolute last people on Earth I would have expected to be Behind The Music™) and the chord progressions that make up the song.

New Wave is a very bittersweet sounding genre of music. No matter how many major chords you use to write a New Wave song, that shit comes out with a sad, almost nostalgic undertone to it.

But that's okay, because that's clearly the vibe they were going for in Ending Credit. The chord progressions used here are usually used when they're either discussing change that's happened in the past, or a change that's about to happen. There's a "life will go on" feel to Ending Credit, and it makes me wonder if Mrs Junghwa is retiring soon. I mean, she did debut in 1993, so I couldn't be surprised.

Let me say that again - Uhm Jung Hwa debuted in 1993.

Ma'am is touching 50 years of age, and she still makes your faves look redundant.

I have to say that my absolute favorite part of Ending Credit is the bridge - when everything but the synth pad and Junghwa's voice drops out. I freaking tear up every time I listen to that part. It's just so powerful!!

A different kind of vocalist would have gone HAM with the high notes n ad libs on the final chorus, but Miss Junghwa decided to keep it cute n classy, which I appreciate. I do think she could have done a little bit more, but at the same time, it's always from one extreme to the next with these divas.

~The Video~

Ending Credit the video sees Uhm Junghwa at the premiere for what I assume is her final role. The video flits between Junghwa watching herself on screen, and Junghwa dancing about various locations of the theater, looking every bit the powerful diva she is. Ending Credit was shot, on location, at the Universal Arts Center in Seoul, which is super cool because they could have easily replicated all the various locations Junghwa filmed in at a studio. It just adds to the whole concept of the video, sis.

Junghwa's makeup in this video is very heavy (I'm pretty sure it breaks every ~rule~ for a Korean style beat), but it suits the video. It emphasizes her age, but not in a bad way (even though there's nothing wrong with looking your age); she looks like the distinguished actress that everyone aspires to be. Her styling, in general, in this video looks very '80s/'90s which only adds to the finality of the video.

Ending Credit the video is a really cool experience, because it shows off just how amazing of a performer Junghwa is. Most of the shots in this video are solo solo, and she keeps you enraptured. If there's one thing I know about this woman, it's that she O O Z E S stage presence. And even when she has dancers supporting her, your eyes stay glued to her (even though her dancers are all fine as F U C K).

Which, I mean, she's been K-Pop's Dancing Diva™ for 25 years now. You kinda have to know a thing or two about charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent to survive that long.

~The Choreography~

Lia Kim (Ending Credit's choreographer) is a fucking genius.

Uhm Junghwa is a competent dancer. She's not BoA level, but she can hold her own, okay?!?!?! And Ending Credit's routine is not overly hard or complex. The moves are somewhat physically demanding (ma'am is up, down, and all around in the first minute of the song; that shit was exhausting to watch live), but I wouldn't say this is the hardest routine I've seen in my six years of K-Pop standom.

Lia Kim is a genius, because Ending Credit's routine is straight up performance art. Ending Credit's routine emphasizes Junghwa's performance ability (like I said above, this woman oozes stage presence), and shows us exactly how she stayed on top of her peers during her peak. Junghwa looks like she's dancing for her life, but also like she's having the time of her life. If this is her "last" role, then she's gonna give it her all and more.

Ending Credit is Junghwa's second video in the Cloud Dreamer of the Nine series that uses all male backup dancers (the first being Dreamer), and idk if that's a Thing™ for her (it's hard to find older K-Pop videos), but it speaks volumes to me?!?!?! I'm so tired of this division in K-Pop where it's like, "boys dance this way, girls dance that way"; and if girls wanna be taken seriously as a dance group, they have to do more masculine styles of dance. Getting beyond the misogyny in that (which you know my nonbinary ass has a lot to speak on), it's just boring as fuck. So it's nice to see Junghwa telling the rules of K-Pop to fuck off.

~Overall and Final Thoughts~

Ending Credit scalped me bald.

Junghwa gives us a whole lot with Ending Credit, sis - the song is so so S O addicting (Primary is more powerful than we ever knew), the video is awe inspiring (and tugs on the heart strings a lil), and the routine is up there with one of the best of the year. Everything was on point. I'm really at a loss for words here, guys; if I was rating this the same way I songs in my Review Roundups, Ending.

Uhm Jung Hwa is fucking badass. She really didn't have to come back to music after she dropped her 2008 mini album D.I.S.C.O. I mean, that era was way before my time, but it's literally one of my favorite minis to just play when I want something fun. She didn't have to start doing music again, because her acting career is probably making her far more money than releasing music ever did. But she really just does not give a fuck about that shit, boo. You can tell this woman loves performing with her whole heart, and she has a team that loves pushing the boundaries of what acts like her ~should~ be doing at her age.

Junghwa is really That Bitch™, and you cannot tell me anything else. She's not overly well known in international K-Pop circles (but then again, not a lot of actual K-Pop legends are), but I highly recommend checking up on her stuff. She was playing hopscotch with her contemporaries' wigs back in the day day the way she's playing with your faves' hairlines now.

Author's Note - this is a review that I left half finished when I halted reviews last month, so I figured I'd go ahead and release it now. I had a much different review planned for today, but I think it'd do far more harm than good if I posted it now. That, and I can't really bring myself to look at it right now. I hope you enjoyed!!

Whether it be besties turned bad or friends of convenience or even family members not exactly on the same page, it seems like the WWE has super-sized the idea of friends becoming foes. It’s a time-honored tradition played out time and time again over wrestling history. Remember Bruno Sammartino vs. Larry Zybysko?

Let’s see how the WWE puts a new spin on things. What they do in the next few months, if done right, could be the stories we talk about in 30 years from now.

Roman is taking no prisoners, including his own flesh and blood, to claim what he thinks is his rightful spot atop the WWE, this time as Universal Champion. Taking down cousin Jey Uso should put the rest of the WWE on notice that no one is safe when they try to take what Reigns thinks is his and only his! And when you put the voice of Paul Heyman together with the forthright, directness and physicality of Reigns to back it up, it’s truly the cherry on top of the sundae.  Watch the Samoan history video from SmackDown.

RETRIBUTION – Now, we have a purpose and some depth. Not only did RETRIBUTION have some promo time, but they also left their mark all over the top of the WWE Universe. First, they take out WWE Champion Drew McIntyre and Keith Lee in the main event. Then, they get into with The Hurt Business to close the show. Let’s hope they keep it interesting with some creative plans. Honestly, I really thought Randy Orton was going to be in the middle of the ring when they attacked McIntyre & Lee in the main event, but I like the way they went with it instead. A good night for RETRIBUTION and a few weeks of aimless wandering. It also looks like RAW will be there home.

Zelina steps up – Well, well now! Not only did Zelina Vega tell Andrade & Angel Garza she’s had enough of them, but then she walks right into RAW Women’s Champion Asuka’s grill to challenge for her title. It’s something no one saw coming, so a cool swerve. Do I expect her to beat Asuka, no. But, wouldn’t it be fitting if Andrade and/or Garza try to get back in her good graces by trying to help her win the title? Or maybe, that will dig a deeper hole for one or both of them. Either way, it’s entertaining and a good hook.

Steel Cage Match – Lots of good physicality between Seth Rollins and Dominik Mysterio. The right guy won to hopefully end their feud. Now, it looks like we are on to Rollins vs. Murphy as they traded shots hitting each other with the cage door during and after the match. You have to wonder where Mysterio’s sister Aaliyah plays in all this as she went to check in on Murphy. Is it getting Murphy over to the good side or can Murphy stay true to Rollins and try to get sis over to the Monday Night Messiah? Hmmmm….

Braun destroys RAW Underground – Sure, it makes no sense that now we’re getting SmackDown stars each week on RAW when the rules only say once a quarter, but the WWE has never been about following their own rules. Make it up as they go, right? Either way, having Braun Strowman destroy everyone in the Underground and promise to come back next week is good for the show. It’s better than the middle-ground we were seeing on SmackDown lately with The Fiend, who now has Roman Reigns to play with.

Solid:

Cedric Alexander – There’s no getting out of the athleticism of Alexander. Plus, putting him in the ring with Ricochet is always a good match. Now, he’s good some personality to go with it as a member of The Hurt Business.

The Riott Squad – Makes sense to give them a win heading into their Clash of Champions Title match with Nia Jax & Shayna Baszler. Poor Natalya & Lana, maybe her going through a table is retribution for the third-party social media chaos.

Owens vs. Black – This feud would be greatly enhanced with a crowd I think. Right now, it just seems like filler, but it’s action packed in the ring, so no harm, no foul in this crazy pandemic World. Plus, a little social media rib from Black saying Owens might be part of RETRIBUTION. Interesting.

Lee vs. McIntyre – Maybe it’s me, but the Keith Lee I found as likeable in NXT is coming off a bit gruff on RAW. McIntyre and Lee seemed awkward at times in their back-and-forth going into the main event and of course, immediately went to blows. I did like them teaming up to fly over the top rope to fight off RETRIBUTION though. That was some good stuff right there! I’m just not sure where Lee is headed though.

Io vs. Shotzi – I make no bones about it that I’m a Shotzi Blackheart admirer. Good showing against the champ here in the opening match. But too much Io Shirai here who finishes off Blackheart with a missile dropkick and top rope moonsault. Wouldn’t be shocked if we see this again down the road for the Championship. Maybe Shotzi takes home the #1 Contenders Battle Royale next week?

Kushida – I’m diggin’ the new attitude. He’s a badass and looking to take over. A tremendous upgrade.

Damian Priest – Honestly, I was expecting much from the main event with Priest defending his NXT North American Championship against Timothy Thatcher, but I was impressed. It overdelivered and both men won me over with a very good match. Props to Priest for his first successful title defense!

Drake & Dain – They’ve never been friends, yet found themselves fighting The Undisputed Era Wednesday night. Well, that was until Dain said he wasn’t showing up. Yo’ cuz – As you’ve seen from our star of the week, it’s another banner week of storytelling from your main event on SmackDown. Sure, the Samoan Street Fight wasn’t anything earth shattering in terms of a match, but the story of Roman vs. Jey, cousin vs. cousin remains the best thing going. Reality is king and the WWE is using it to its fullest. The little nuances make all the difference. From the smiles to the daggers that Reigns sent Uso’s way at the end of the show, you could feel the temperature in the room drop 50 degrees.

No sense:

Lucha House Party – Why exactly are we pushing the trio only to try to rip them apart? Having Kalisto and El Dorado criticizing Gran Metalik during his match with Cesaro is ridiculous. No one, and I repeat, no one wants to see that feud, especially when you’re trying to push them with a title shot at Clash of Champions. 

Lacey Evans – Why do they continue to waste her talents with the same ol’ catchphrases and losing matches? Evans could be a dominating force in the WWE if they just gave her a chance. BTW, in this pandemic World, I’m shocked the sanitizer hasn’t become a finishing move.

Wasted:

The Dirt Sheet – Did we really need to waste 10 minutes of talk just to see Otis rip off The Miz’ clothes? I did not. You know what else we don’t need? A lawsuit.

Parting shots:

RIP Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Legend. Icon. Inspiration. And yes, all around badass. Regardless of your political bias, you have to admire her spirit, her fight and her life. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family and friends.

1. Have you ever had something happen to yourself (not as a baby) that you didn’t remember until someone else told you about it?

Oh my goodness, all the time? I could truly be a living, breathing version of that psychology experiment given how often people remind me of things I have done but have no memory of them. A good example is that I do not remember reading Hamlet in high school, but bestfran, who was in the same class as me, swears up and down that we did. And not only that we did, but that it was like... a thing. Like parts were given out. People got into it. It's possible that costumes were worn? And I had no memory of this until she started talking about it. I very seriously thought she was lying to me, that's how much I had forgotten this happened. It was only after she started talking about it and telling me that it definitely happened that I was like "oh shit, you are right... you are so right." (Or she has some weird thing about wanting to implant false memories about Hamlet, which I guess I would also be okay with.)

2. Best food combination that shouldn’t work but does that you have ‘invented’?

This is actually really tough. I have made some pretty odd cupcakes in my day, but the one that is most often requested is my pear, feta and hefeweizen cupcake, which I am told is a pretty strange combination? But I guess not that strange because people want them all the time?

3. Do you like live theatre? Art exhibits? If so tell me about something you’ve seen that made an impact.

Very much so! We have a free museum here that houses many of my most favorite surrealist paintings, but it is also associated with the Rothko chapel, which is one of the most peaceful places I think I have ever been? The picture does not do those monolithic paintings justice, either... they are easily 3 or 4 times my height and truly overpowering to see up close. They look just all black, but they are filled with so much movement. Rothko is certainly a difficult painter to capture in photography. I could (and have) stared at them, lost in the shades and hidden colors, for moments that seemed very long. It's just silent in a loud way. 10/10, do recommend.

4. Do you have an accessory or jewellery or makeup that you wear almost always?

I have a silver ring with a little cross on it that my mother gave me, I think right before I started college? I wear it on my left ring finger, but it is neither a ~*purity ring*~ (because I am not religious and also purity rings are creepy) nor is it meant to signal any sort of message... it's just the most comfortable finger. Fun story. Not long after HGD and I started dating, he had my ring in his mouth (I don't know?) and bit (yes, with his teeth) it out of shape. He didn't think it was real silver? I don't know what he was thinking. But I was so angry. We took it to the place where it is from and they were not sure they would be able to reshape it because it looked like HGD had fucking bitten a stress fracture into my ring?! But it was fine (HGD got so lucky). So now it has little tiny teeth indents, which is dumb but also kind of wonderful. HGD isn't allowed to touch the ring anymore, though.

5. What is your strongest olfactory memory?

Any time I smell Chrome (the terrible, cheap cologne that every teenage boy seems to own?), I am transported back to being 16 years old in the early evening heat of August, and a boy is handing me his Pink Floyd shirt that is many sizes too big and saying "I heard a rumor that you liked me?" and kissing me on the cheek.

6. What album that has been released in the past two years should I go buy?

Okay. If I had to pick just one album, and it doesn't even matter if you like rap, it would be DAMN. by Kendrick Lamar. It is undeniable how good it is. But I am bad at picking one, so I might also recommend World Eater by Blanck Mass, Humanz by Gorillaz, or Dirty Projectors by (you guessed it) Dirty Projectors!

7. When you were a kid did you have a favourite make believe game you’d play? Or dress up you’d wear?

When I was a little girl, my cousins and I all very much liked to play with my grandfather's wife's square dancing skirts. We would just twirl around in them for hours, pretending that we were all beautiful dancers!

8. Tell me something that made you feel proper chuffed with yourself. In a nice quietly contented way.

Oh, any time I corral my team into agreement, or really even any time I get them to go *a* direction, I feel very quietly content with myself! Or! And god, this is so dumb, but any time that I put a lot of things in my queue for this blog so that it doesn't seem like I'm dead for days on end!

9. IS MISSING. Is this one of those things where I am supposed to notice? I will take this chance to tell you all that you should go read Silv's first lines meme answer, then.

10. Have you ever had a scary or very odd animal encounter?

Well... this is more about an animal encounter that I didn't have, but when I was a kid, my family stayed the night in Yosemite National Park in a canvas tent (which was surprisingly nice... or 10-year-old me had lower standards than current me, maybe). When you park, you watch this TERRIFYING video of bears just RIPPING CARS APART if they smell food in your car so you have to throw away EVERYTHING that might attract bears. And I mean everything, even gum wrappers. So you can imagine what they would do if they smelled food inside your tent, right? I slept surprisingly well that night for being terrified that I might be mauled to death in my sleep by a hungry bear, though.

11. Share a link to a fic or fan art that you love?

Oh... oh, so tough. Wildfire by abbycadabra makes me feel things everytime I read it. And I really, really love atalienart's "Spell Series"!

Answers to @devinesis's questions:

1. What’s something in this world that you just don’t understand and wish you could?

I very sincerely wish that I could understand the conservative mindset of putting businesses or profits or churches before actual human lives. I mean I wish I could understand it in the way that they must feel it, because I jokingly say that Ted Cruz is obviously the Zodiac Killer in a Lizard Person's body (*cough* he is *cough*), but I can also (begrudingly) admit that he is maybe also a human bean (even if a v bad one)... and how does he, or any person that voted for him, or any person that votes along beside him in Congress... well, how do they justify their own seeming lack of humanity? It's a mystery to me.

2. What show or movie does everyone love and tell you to watch but you just hate no matter how many times you try?

I'm probably about to lose so many followers but THE HARRY POTTER MOVIES?!?! Like I disagree with nearly all of the casting, I will never forgive them for not making Harry's eyes fucking green, and even the movies that I watched... it felt like they glossed over all of the most magical parts? 

They are irredeemable trash in my opinion and even though we got some cool actors out of it, I have no interest in even trying to love them. AND DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON SIRIUS BLACK, OKAY.

3. The first book you ever really loved? (If it’s HP, cool, but you have to say something else, too. LOL)

Oh. Anything by Francesca lia Block... I devoured her books when I was younger. I wanted so desperately to be one of those manic pixie shangri-la fairy girls that she wrote about. Or To Kill A Mockingbird because... well, Atticus.

4. If you were going to be in a relationship (platonic or sexual) for the rest of your life with a character from the Harry Potter universe, who would you choose?

Sorry, Draco, but I'm going with Hermione Granger. Helpful for studying? Check. Sometimes problematic but woke af? Check (better than most other characters in the book). Will be down to sometimes do girly things? Check. Is good at keeses because most girls are? Check. Likes to know things? Check. Is a badass? Check. Knows muggle AND magical shit? Check. Is def a ride or die, and down for adventuring without being a baby (looking at you, Ron)? CHECK.

5. Your most hated book you were ever assigned to read in school?

Tess of the D'Ubervilles. *rolls eyes* She should have just killed everyone and rolled out of there with two middle fingers up in the air instead of complaining about everything for the whole book (I realize this is not a very nuanced look at this novel, but lord, did I hate this when I had to read it in school... we also had some nightmare-level assignments related to this book, which is probably part of the reason I hated it so much).

6. If you had a personal uniform like a cartoon character, what would it be?

All black everything (which is not far off from what I usually wear now), except, like a cartoon character, everything would fit perfectly and never fade and always look cool and I would also never have to actually put on eyeliner, I would just rock the perfect cat-eye all the time.

7. Where is your “happy place”?

Any place where I can get a (good) vanilla latte or listen to music very loud and just dance around like an idiot.

8. Favorite form of exercise?

I really enjoy yoga, but I certainly don't do it often enough. I also kind of like the monotony of elliptical machines?

9. If you had a crush when you were, like, 12–14—looking back, is it embarrassing, or do you nod at your younger self in approval?

Mostly I am embarrassed but I did crush hard for a few hours on a total stranger at a battle of the bands when I was probably 14. He had long black hair and weird tall shoes and was defintely wearing eyeliner and looked like the closest thing I might ever see to Davey Havok in person and I just wanted to talk to him because he was so pretty (but also clearly much older than me). I still approve of that one, 4-hour crush on a dreamy goth stranger. Other than that, 12-14 year old me definitely had trash taste.

10. What, for you, are the most hated and most enjoyable tasks of adulthood?

Most hated? Having to ever wake up early and be somewhere on time while knowing that if I'm late I have no one to blame but myself? Most enjoyable: Being able to decide when I want to do things, if at all (within reason).

11. What small-talk question do you most hate answering from strangers at a party?

In high school it was, "where do you want to go to college" because I did not know where I wanted to go to college, or even if I wanted to go to college. In college it was "what's your major?" as if there are not a million other things you could say to a perfect stranger that would be more interesting. In grad school it was "oh, so why did you want to study this"... we all have the same answer, guys. We aren't here for the money. We're all here because we want to help. Come on. Currently, it's "oh, what do you do?" because my job is sort of difficult to explain and I always get "the look" of like "oh, that sounds like it must be really sad" and I know it's not necessarily what I should be doing, but it's what I'm doing right now, damn it. Also because we could talk about literally anything else, why does it always have to be work?

Adore: a·dore  (ə-dôr′) verb. To love someone very much, especially in a way that shows a lot of admiration or respect, or to like something very much.

“Stiles, can I ask you something?” They were sitting in the hood of the jeep after another day of fighting villains, relaxing. They’d escaped from the others with the excuse that they were fixing the Jeep and instead had driven to the lookout to have a time for themselves.

It was a clear night, the moon shining so bright and soft music playing on the jeep’s radio. A perfect night, Malia thought.

She was resting her head in Stiles’ chest. She liked to hear the steady beat of his heart. It always made her relax. She knew she’d be able to hear it even if she weren’t in that position, but she liked it better this way. It made her feel closer to him.

“Sure, what is it?” He replied, eyes closed, hands loosely brushing her hair.

“What— What do you like about me?” Malia asked with a little hesitation. She’d been thinking about this for some time now, but had been too nervous to actually ask. She hadn’t wanted to know his answer, reason unknown to her. But, finally getting the courage, she’d decided she’d inquired.

“What?” It was obvious that the question had taken him by surprise, for his heart had skipped a beat and was starting to go faster.

Malia raised her head slightly so she could face him, but his eyes were still closed. She stayed in that position anyway and explained. “I mean—there’re plenty of girls way better than me. I’m not the prettiest nor smartest girl in the town, so why are you even with me?” She didn’t know why she felt like this, but she couldn’t help it. Everyday at school she’d see girls like Lydia or Kira—with their perfect faces, makeup or not, and their wonderful outfits. And, if she was being honest, she was kind of  jealous of them. But, of course, they hadn’t been trapped in the body of a coyote for the majority of their teenage years so they’d had time to learn about all those things.

He opened his eyes and looked down at her. “That’s not true, Lia. You’re one of the most beautiful and smartest persons I know.”

She sighed, not quite pleased with his short answer.

Stiles seemed to have picked up on that, because he smiled to himself and continued.  "Fine. You wanna know what I like about you?“

"That’s what I said.”

Stiles let out a little laugh at her bluntness. This’d be easy.  "Well, let’s see.“ He pretended to think about it for a moment, his finger tapping his chin softly. "For starters, I like how you’re not afraid of saying what’s on your mind. You say what you want to say, no matter where or with whom you are. There’s not filter with you.”

Malia knew that wasn’t completely true. She’d a lot of trouble speaking her mind when it was about things related to her feelings. Or things that made her feel weak in general. She had trouble asking for questions on math class because she didn’t want her classmates to laugh at her; or when she and Kira had sleepovers and her friend started asking about her relationship with Stiles or how she was doing with her father. But she didn’t tell him that. She decided to let him have this one.

He continued. “I like your confidence and way of walking. It’s like you own the entire world. And how fearless you are. I mean, you’ve saved my life countless of times. Hey, It’s like you’re my knight in a shining armor.” He said over excitedly.

Malia couldn’t help but laugh at this statement. “You’re not intimidated by that? Most guys would be.” She teased.

“No way. How many guys can say that their girlfriend is a gorgeous and badass werecoyote? I’m proud of that”, he affirmed, shaking Malia and making her laugh even harder. He soon joined in and the entire forest was filled with the sound of their laughs.

Once they’d gotten their breaths back, he looked at her and carried on. “ I also like your smile. And I like how excited you get when you see something for the first time. I like when you watch movies with me on the couch of the living room, or in my room, or even when we get distracted and don’t watch them,” He raised an eyebrow, and she could feel herself blushing. Hoping he wouldn’t notice, she gave him a slight push on his side.

He chuckled, but immediately continued like it’d never happened.  "I like our conversations, because I know I can tell you anything and you’ll not judge. “ He moved a little so she was obligated to stand up. Once up, he cupped her cheek with one hand. "I like when you look at me with those beautiful brown eyes that make me feel like I’m the luckiest guy in the world. I like your lips and how amazing they feel when they touch mine,” as if to prove the point, he leaned over to give her a soft kiss.

Malia thought It felt different, somehow. It wasn’t like their normal kisses— passionate and heated. This one was delicate, lips barely touching each other. It made her stomach feel like there was a storm happening inside of it. It was strange, but she thought she could get used to this feeling.

After a second, he separated. His voice getting hoarse and barely a whisper. “But specially, I like how strong you are. And I don’t mean strong as in ‘physical’ strong; I mean for how much you’ve put up with and are still going: you lost your entire family at a really young age. You were trapped in the body of a coyote for eight whole years, then forced to change back to human again by two stupid kids that wanted to play heroes”, she chuckled.

“You were just trying to help” Malia said softly, remembering their conversation in Eichen House, back when she was so desperate to change back to even hear what he had to say. She was glad she did not longer feel like that. She loved her life as a human, no matter how hard it could get.

“I’m glad you don’t feel like we ruined your life anymore.”

“I guess you could said I’ve gotten quite attached to the stupid guys”, she joked. He gave her a shy smile.

“My point is: You’ve been through so much, Mal, and you still have a smile on your face. You still try your hardest to adapt to the "human” world.  And like Scott once said, you study harder than any of us to compensate for all those missing years. And you may not be top of the class, but you’re better at countless of other things.“ He started drawing patterns with his thumb on her cheek.

Malia smiled fondly at him. She liked the way Stiles made her feel. When she was around him, she felt calm. Her mind stopped thinking about all those things that tormented her, and she could relax and just be herself.

He smiled back, stopping for a moment and just looking at her. His eyes explored her entire face— passing from her eyes, to her cheeks, to end up on her lips. He bit his own lips absently. "Hell, Malia. I don’t just 'like’ you. I love you—no, I adore you. You’re one of the best things that’s ever happened to me. You’ve helped me more than anything and anyone could ever had. She put her hands behind his neck, pulling him closer to her. He hummed to the touch, rolling over so he was on top of her, resting his body on one of his arms, the other resting behind her neck.

Malia pulled back for a moment and looked at him. “Me too.”

“You too, what?”

“I adore you, too.” She made emphasis on the word, and he grinned, going back to kiss her, and Malia wished this night never came to an end.

My Top 19 K-Pop songs of 2019

(No one asked, but I’ll tell you anyway :) )

19. LOL - Taeyeon: I waited so long for Taeyeon’s new solo album to come out because her solo work has always really resonated with me, and I love the vibe she went for for Purpose. This is my favorite song from the album (along with Love You Like Crazy) because I love how soft the “ha, ha, ha” part in the prechorus is before louder, dramatic, sassy chorus comes in. It’s like an evil character’s song in a movie. 18. The Fifth Season (SSFWL) - Oh My Girl: It just sounds so pretty. Oh My Girl always sounds so pretty but something about this title track takes off when that chorus hits and makes you feel like you’re flying away in the true, whimsical, Oh My Girl fashion. They release nothing but good music, always. 17. Valkyrie - ONEUS: My favorite debut this year! Fun fact, Hwanwoong was my original one-pick in Produce 101 Season 2 and I was pissed he got eliminated so early and I was waiting for his debut ever since. Honestly, all of ONEUS’s stuff is pretty solid but this song is my favorite from them and definitely gave them a different sound than a lot of k-pop groups at the moment. Love the dance, love the guitar in the minimalistic part of the chorus into the EDM drop, and love my little man Hwanwoong :) 16. Baby You Are - EXO: This album took so long to come out that a lot of other groups caught my attention during the year and I wasn’t as hyped for their comeback as I usually would be, but immediately on first listen, this was my favorite song. ChanKai leading the chorus *chefs kiss*  and I love the groovy vibe they went for and how this album went from intense songs to these lighter songs to the ballads.  15. Fun! - fromis_9: Exactly what you’d expect from the title of the song. They all looked great, sounded great, the choreo is cute, and I adore the spunky sound. The music video is really cheeky too! 14. Chronosaurus - Stray Kids: I was really unsure whether I would like Stray Kids because something about their debut stuff didn’t vibe with me at first but them Miroh came out and I was like oh??? And then I listened to this mini album and I was like OH???? THAT CHORUS! anyway we stan now 13. Dumb - BVNDIT: I was not expecting to like this song! I wasn’t the biggest fan of their debut because I was worried that they were going to have this group do the exact same style as Chungha, and while this comeback still has some of those vibes, I think the edginess of this song made it stand out to me. The choreography is one of my faves this year, simple and elegant at the same time and the girl that starts the second verse (Yiyeon?) has such a stunning vocal tone that really caught my attention. 12. Bing Bing - Red Velvet: not Red Velvet’s strongest year but this song and Parade stood out to me because it has that wacky classic “red” style that I like. The live performance is what pushed this song ahead of Parade for me, because they all look so sassy and confident and their runways walks ended ANTM’s career. 11. Happy Ending (JPN ver.) - Seventeen: is technically not a Korean song, and I know there’s a Korean version to it, but I’ve listened to this way too much for me not to include it. This song and Hit have my favorite choreographies of the year but I prefer how laid-back and acoustic parts of this song are despite how hard this dance goes. 10. Icy - ITZY: I wish I had just an ounce of the confidence these girls exude, especially Yuna when she gets her center time. Everything about this song is so strange yet done so right, and ITZY gets bonus points for being choreographed by my favorite choreographer on Youtube at the moment, Brian Friedman. 9. Lion - (G)I-DLE: I don’t want to like (G)I-DLE, because I hate how their concept is just cultural appropriation and the girls think it’s okay to use other cultures as an aesthetic or a costume they can put on whenever they want, and call it something like “ethnic hip.” But credit where credit is due, this group puts out some of the most creative, best quality music out there right now and Soyeon sure knows how to write a song. The power this song exudes.... amazing. Special shout-out to Blow Your Mind and Put it Straight from the Senorita album as well! 8. Spring Snow - Pentagon: Kino just knows what kind of music I like, and it is unfair that his song in every album is my favorite but here we are. This song just makes me feel endlessly happy, like the ending theme of a coming of age movie? They’re another group that put out nothing but quality music all year, and I also want to mention Sha La La which I feel deserved more love than it ever got. @ cube bring back Yanan please thank you 7. Highway to Heaven (Korean ver.) - NCT: I think I mentioned this in my concert recap but everyone was looking forward to Superhuman when the VCR for this song came out I immediately knew it was my new favorite NCT song.The MVs (for both versions actually!) are so simple and pretty and the song is so hopeful (in Korean......) and Haechan finally got his deserved high note, bless this song 6. We Must Love - ONF: my fatal mistake is not discovering ONF sooner, and it is also the mistake of literally everyone else who has not heard of them. because their viewcount is so LOW The melody in this song is so pretty and so dramatic and I LOVE THEIR MAIN VOCAL??? also this song made me fall in love with Laun literally 2 months before he left but I digress-- 5. LALALAY - Sunmi: I got so excited about this song that I learned the dance within the first week and that’s dedication right there. I love a good Lia Kim choreo, and I love the attitude and the energy Sunmi exuded. Also the stage outfits and makeup 11/10. 4. Devil - CLC: I want to put every song CLC put out this year on this list but I have no space so I picked my favorite. While I like CLC when they decide to go badass, I have a soft spot in my heart for songs like Pepe and No Oh Oh so having them give us that retro sound again was really refreshing. Sorn got lines! This was also another song I immediately learned the dance to. This was their BEST year by far and I’m looking forward to their album (hopefully, I’m tired of minis and singles) 3. You Calling My Name - GOT7: In all honesty, I haven’t fully liked a GOT7 comeback since 2015 (If You Do <3) which I feel awful about because they were one of the first songs I got into when I started liking k-pop that year. I kept up with their variety work and still liked the members and was waiting for another title track to catch my attention again and this one punched me in the face. I’ve listened to this song every day since it came out. Styling, on point, production, on point, and especially the CHOREO is on point. also jinyoung.....is very powerful..... 2. Rooftop - N.flying: I’M SO HAPPY FOR THEM!! I grew really attached to this group after subscribing to Jaehyun and Hun’s youtube channel (2idiots, best content out there lol) and I’ve been waiting for their big break because they’re all so nice and work so hard and it finally came! It amazes me how big this song got in Korea, and it’s so refreshing to hear. Hweseung’s vocals, ugghhhhh <3 1. DAY6′s entire discography Wanna Go Back - DAY6: wow I’m incredibly predictable aren’t I. I’ve been incredibly stressed with studying this year, and most kpop is too distracting for me to listen to while doing school work, but DAY6′s music has been really comforting and helping me to stay focused, which makes them my most listened to artist of the year. I struggled to pick a favorite song because they all are, but I settled on Wanna Go Back because it’s one of the only songs I know of that have made me cry on first listen. The lyrics hit too close to home, and it’s really meaningful to me that they put into words so eloquently.

In general, while I don’t think this is musically the strongest year for kpop, I feel like a lot of groups released music that was more true to their authentic selves and a lot of the songs that stood out to me are songs that just make me happy. As someone who loves kpop dances, the choreo this year was also impeccable. Here’s to more great music to come, and I hope everyone takes care of themselves into the new year!
