1, 4, 11 and 13 for the fandom asks. Any fandom, whichever fits best ^_^
1. the character everyone gets wrong
AYLA CHRONO TRIGGER. I KNOW PEOPLE ARE GREAT WITH HER IN MY LITTLE NICHE BUT THE AMOUNT OF TIMES I'VE SEEN HER REDUCED TO 'HOT AND DUMB' IS ANNOYING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
she's the leader of her people, talking to AND effectively communicating with people from the future about concepts she's never encountered before now AND SHE'S DOING THIS ALL IN A SECOND LANGUAGE. she is very strong and capable and has many moments throughout the game where she says some pretty profound and inspiring stuff, but because she speaks a little differently and has a sexed up design, she's just for looking at apparently 🙄🙄 God forbid a woman be hot AND clever
(^that goes for all hot and clever ladies in media for me, I just feel particularly butt hurt about ayla)
4. what was the last straw that made you finally block that annoying person?
Uhh... I block pretty liberally and just try to avoid drama in public if I can, but usually I unfollow if my dash was getting clogged with shit. The only example that comes to mind isn't a fandom one but I blocked someone once because they were being way too American for me (I know I joke around in varying degrees about Americans, but this was like. Too much about gun bullshit and displaying closed mindsets to other cultures.. No thank youuuuu)
11. number of fandom-related words you've filtered
Dunno cause I lost my main 😭
I know I filtered dead poets society cause I really don't give a shit about that film, ever since we had to watch it in class lol
I probably had most Marvel stuff filtered too I think, but otherwise I think it was just flashing gifs and insects and stuff that I don't really want to see in general
13. worst blorboficiation
Uhhhh... This is hard to think of. I generally try to avoid fandom takes I don't vibe with and my brain is slow today so ummmmmm
I'm just gonna say the way Capcom have treated their main resi characters LMAO. Especially the Redfield siblings... Like dude they're the best how do you fuck them up!? Chris isn't stupid by any means but throughout the series he just gets worse and worse and makes weird decisions that don't even feel plausible from a character flaw standpoint. He was done fucking dirty in re6 and then re7/8 was just. What the hell. 7 didn't look right but whatever, 8 he looked SOOOO FINE but acted BADLY. (I LOVE re8 but I.... Kinda hate most the story decisions LMAO)
AND CLAIRE!!!????? I LOVE CLAIRE SO MUCH AND THEY DID WEIRD STUFF TO HER :''''(
she's a capable, if a little hot headed, badass that is VERY FUCKING CLEVER. I really enjoyed seeing her in re2r and and cv, but then in rev2 that was straight up not Claire? Like, you can't tell me that she suddenly lost her ability to talk to children like humans when she helped Sherry in re2. She felt flanderised in the worst sense and the game left me feeling very frustrated at a lot of character points. AND DON'T GET ME STARTED ON THE FILM/TV PERIPHERALS. I'LL TRY TO KEEP IT SHORT BUT BASICALLY. INTO DARKNESS WAS A CRIME AGAINST CLAIRE CAUSE SHE NOT ONLY HAD THE MORE INTERESTING PLOT POINTS TO FOLLOW, BUT WAS DEPICTED SO POORLY AND EVEN MADE INTO A WEIRD DAMSEL IN DISTRESS FOR LEON... SHE WAS SHAFTED SO HARD JUST FOR LEON TO TAKE CENTRE STAGE (BUT EVEN THAT FUCKED LEON OVER A LOT TOO TBH) and I'll refrain from the other times she's appeared in movies cause it's been a while since I watched any and I don't wanna go on too long into incoherency haha

The ones that suffer the most
I wanted to talk about this for a long time.
I’m a Resident evil addicted, I finished almost every RE game released and I must say that Capcom made some poor choices regarding Jill and Chris, they are EASILY the most mistreated characters in RE Franchise.
But let’s explain why is that:
Tumblr media
Jill and Chris are survivors, they had to survive in a mansion with a lot of puzzles and zombies, while looking for items that could help them to progress and find a way to reach Brad.
Tumblr media
When they arrive at STARS Office, they are revolted that Umbrella did all that under their noses and innocents were dying because of that and they explained EVERYTHING in a report - but Irons made that go away.
In the ORIGINAL RE3 we had this special file (Jill’s Diary)
August 7th Two weeks have passed since that day. My wounds have been healed, but I just can't forget it. For most people, it's history now. But for me, whenever I close my eyes, it all comes back clearly. Zombies eating people's flesh and the screams of my teammates dying. No, the wounds in my heart are not healed yet...
August 13th Chris has been causing a lot of trouble recently. What's with him? He seldom talks to the other police members and is constantly irritated. The other day, he punched Elran of the Boy's Crime department just for accidentally splashing Chris's face with coffee. I immediately stopped Chris, but when he saw me he just gave me a wink and walked away. I wonder what happened to him...
August 15th Midnight. Chris, who has been on a leave of absence for a "vacation," called me so I visited his apartment. As soon as I walked into his room, he showed me a couple of pieces of paper. They were part of a virus research report entitled as simply as "G". Then Chris told me that, "The nightmare still continues." He went on to say that, "It's not over yet." Ever since that day, he has been fighting all by himself without rest, without even telling me.
August 24th Chris left the town today to go to Europe. Barry told me that he would send his family to Canada and then he would follow Chris. I decided to remain in Raccoon City for a while because I know that the research facility in this city will be very important to this entire case. In a month or so, I'll be joining with them somewhere in Europe. That's when my real battle begins...
For some weird reason this file isn’t available in RE3 Remake.
But ok, here we see that Chris was doing some investigation - in the RE2RMK  you could see this letter that Chris left in a way that normal people wouldn't understand - the only thing that Claire says is that “doesnt look like him” but how normies would understand what Chris is like is he is not well represented in media ??????????????????
Tumblr media
And Jill had all the detective work in her wall.
Tumblr media
So far so good - we understand the basics about them - they are Special police force, the elite, they had a traumatic experience and they survived to tell the story.
Some problems until now:
Jill had a MAJOR personality change in RE3 RMK- I honestly like most of that, she is a badass in the originals and she is a badass in the rmk but I still dislike the fact that she swears all the time (specially because in RE1, RE Rev, RE5 she doesn't do that)
We can tell a lot about her personality just looking at her room, but I still miss some stuff (I had expectations - so this is not a real problem. but still) like a Vinyl player (since she is probably into classical music), some letters from her father so new players can understand her origin and why is she so good in lockpicking and more about her dog (she had a pic in the original that could’ve been her boyfriend but it was replaced by a dog in RE2 rmk but in RE3 Rmk there in no dog)
Okay - after you finish the game the only thing we see is this:
Tumblr media
In my opinion this is Chris since he is always associated with Green colors while Jill is associated with blue.
So my speculation here is that she found him while in the original we had this:
Tumblr media
This is not a major chance but still is important (lore of course - duh) but the problem here is that while Jill is looking for him - Code Veronica is happening.
So I can only assume two things, they did not show him because they DON’T HAVE A FACE FOR HIM or I am wrong and that is Jill, but if that is Jill so why there is no decent epilogue like the original ?
Okay, now we are arriving in the real trouble area
I will do RE5 first and the Wii and Rev1 (even tho those two comes first in the lore)
RESIDENT EVIL 5
So before the game was release we had some propaganda, including this:
Tumblr media
So have in mind that Jill was dead, I thought that she died and RE5 would explain that shit.
But in the beginning we see that Chris is looking for her and have in mind that Chris HAD A MAJOR CHANCE IN HIS APPEARANCE, and I’m not talking about his muscles.
Tumblr media
I will not address Chris in CV since he was good in that game but I the team that made CV also made the original, it had CONSISTENCE.
Here we have Chris, he’s THE classical american soldier protagonist from Hollywood in the 80′s/90′s and he had some omage to TOPGUN
Tumblr media
He also shares some traits with his sister
Tumblr media
A major trait here is that HE HAS BLUE EYES, typical good looking soldier from US.
and now let’s have a look at Chris in RE5...
Tumblr media
Yeah... I still hate this face even tho I love his Character in this game, this ugly a** monkey looking mf and he had a lot of steroids
So we have some lore to him in RE5, Jill and Chris went to a mansion looking for Spencer (one of the fathers of Umbrella and the one that was behind project Wesker, he wanted to do this Virus so he could live forever, so RE has a good lore, it’s not just about zombies) but when they found him, he was dead and Wesker was by his side, in a fight Jill sacrificed herself to save Chris’s life.
Chris started doing mission after mission because her body was never found, and he made a name for himself, he became a ‘legend’ inside BSAA and you can see that in the beginning of RE5.
The reason behind the muscles was probably to fight Wesker mano to mano but still is not well made, it really felt weird playing for the first time.
So now we have a problem here, there is thing that you use in a narrative that is to make someone strong af powerless, and they did that to Jill. (a good example of this is in TWD- Ricky is a fucking legend and Negan made him powerless in the face of a event)
Jill was used in a Boss fight and that is it... She is not in the game as a character, she is being manipulated and her whole design was changed, she looks like Nina from Tekken. WTF. - BTW, the fact that Wesker had mind control over her created 1000 fics of sex
Tumblr media
So that is it, my main problem here isnt Jill itself, but it’s the fact that they used her character as a boss even tho she is the heroine, she never appears in RE lore again until some guy inside Capcom said “Well people are asking about Jill so let’s place a file in Rev2 saying that she is in rehab”
The only time that she appears again is in a 3DS NINTENDO ONLY game, it felt that Capcom simply don’t care about her character.
By the way Revelations 1 is a great game and was adaptable some years later for PC and consoles
But you think that this is bad, wait until we arrive at RESIDENT EVIL 6
When I learned that Jill was not in RE6 I was mad... But after I played that game I said “thank you God” that game was bad, transformers kind of bad, it had bad writing, the lore was all over the place and Chris was the one that suffered the most in this game.
He was responsible for the death of an entire squad, suffered amnesia and people still wanted him in the command
Tumblr media
THEY MADE HIM AN ALCOHOLIC
The golden boy of BSAA reduced to THIS.
By the way, the director said that HE WANTED TO KILL CHRIS IN THIS GAME to SUBVERT EXPECTATIONS - so if you liked Piers now that he died only because of that.
So now let’s analyse what we know:
The first 2 main characters are not well represented in media until RE6, they don’t know how to re introduce Jill in the games and Chris was reduced to a normal guy at a Russian bar;
But it gets worse...
Capcom LOVE Leon, we know that. he is always the hero, he is the protagonist in almost every movie and he is always the cool guy so when he get’s a new model, he looks like this:
Tumblr media
But When Chris get’s a new face he look like this:
Tumblr media
WHO DAFUQ ARE U, no offense to the model but he has NEGATIVE JAW LINE.
And still he doesn't look like Claire’s brother, there is no blue/green eyes and he looks younger that he was in 6 (and 6 still uses that ugly character model)
But let’s go in the lore- we HAVE 0 info on Jill in RE6 / RE7 and no sight of her in RE8
And speaking of which, they tried to make Chris the bad guy in the trailer so when we play we see “Ohhhh he was not the bad guy, that happened and that is why he did that”
But still...
If they are going to do that to his character don’t use this character, shit ! Do something with that Wesker’s son that made 0 sense in RE6 but leave Chris out of this - it really feels that they simply don’t know how to treat him right
And you may think that I may be complaining a lot because of his appearance
But this is him in RE8
Tumblr media
(to me this is some random dude from Russia)
Tumblr media
And this is him in RE:Verse (that is going to be release TOGETHER)
So this tells me that they have 0 clue of how to handle his looks
Jill got RE3Rmk but it felt like a cheap game compared to RE2Rmk where the original RE3 was SO MUCH BETTER
And this is bad because there are so many new fans joining the fandom only to see 2 great characters suffering from poor director’s choices.
I’m sorry about this rant, if you like Chris face and looks its okay, really, but dont tell me that Chris from 5/6/8 is the same from 1/CV and if you think im wrong about Jill its fine, but she is an amazing character that could have so much more impact in RE universe (I mean, she never even appeared in a RE movie - animations)
But it’s sad to see so many characters that receive good representation in media and good games/lore while Jill get’s almost none and Chris is handled like random face guy.
I was going to talk a little bit more about Rev 1 and RE Umbrella Chronicles but there is no need since Im mad right now and it seems that Capcom has 0 interest in making Code Veronica and Umbrella’s fall after that since their fav boy Leon need a rmk in RE4 even tho RE4 is not that old.
Bonus:
Tumblr media
Fun fact: Chris served in the Air force, so yeah, to me even Tom Cruise looks more like Chris than Chris from the games

some Leon taking care of an injured Luis I dug out of the deepest depths of my drafts
Set after the end of CODE:Veronica, in an AU where Luis met Leon and Claire during RE2, and when Claire left to look for Chris, Luis went with her because he felt like he owed her a favor. Leon stayed behind with Sherry. Same universe as How Do You Talk To Girls? but that's just how they met and doesn't get into any RE2 or CV stuff, so this can be read standalone, you're not missing too much.
(Also Leon gets to keep Sherry and isn't extorted by the government because she didn't get infected and before leaving Luis coached him on what he should say so he comes off as a potentially useful idiot instead of someone who "knows too much.")
Luis's heart is racing the second he wakes up, because Leon isn't in bed with him. He's pretty sure he didn't just dream Leon picking him up, but far from certain. All his memories of the night before are hazy. He vaguely remembers taking a painkiller after getting to Leon's apartment, or at least what he thought was Leon's apartment, so that's making the memories even more clouded. He at least knows he didn't dream getting out of Rockfort; there isn't a tracking collar around his neck.
And because he's clean. Well, not clean. Slightly less dirty and disgusting than before is a more accurate description. And he has clean pajamas on. Not the once white shirt that ended up dyed red with blood. Not the pants that had gone from skintight to loose and baggy over the course of his time as an inmate.
But none of this is evidence that the Leon part wasn't a dream. Someone else could have cleaned him up and changed his clothes.
Then he hears something, and everything is okay again. Leon's voice from the other room. He doesn't know who Leon is talking to, and tunes the conversation out because he doesn't particularly care. All he cares about is that he is with Leon.
No longer on the verge of a panic attack, Luis closes his eyes again. Leon comes back into the bedroom a few minutes later, and starts putting a hand on Luis's wrist. His eyes flutter open. Leon lets go of his wrist.
“Hey, sweetheart, I'm gonna bring you something to eat. Be right back,” Leon says softly, and kisses his forehead. A couple minutes later he returns with a basket of snacks. “Sorry I don't have a meal for you. I wanted to get back to you right away. I'll cook something later, but you should have something now.”
“I heard you talking to someone? Sherry?”
His memory really is fucked. He knows he asked about Sherry last night, but can't remember any of what Leon said. He's pretty sure there wasn't any bad news at least.
“Oh, no, I was on the phone. She's not home. I was supposed to pick her up today, but that didn't exactly pan out, so she's staying there another night.”
“Didn't pan out?”
“You. You've been asleep for like 16 fucking hours. I was worried sick. Kept coming back in to check your pulse to make sure you weren't dying on me. Didn't want to pick her up and get her worrying about you too.”
“Oh. So that's what you were doing before getting me food. Sorry for worrying you. I guess I just need to catch up on good sleep. Been a couple months since I slept feeling safe, and clean. I guess I showered last night? I don't remember much…”
“It's okay. I mean I knew it was just something like that, or I would have taken you to the ER or something, but you mean so much to me that I still felt worried,” Leon says. “God, you were annoying last night. I love you, but you were horrible. You wanted to shower before going to bed, but I told you no, because you'd taken a pill and were kinda out of it and I didn't want you falling and cracking your head open on my bathroom floor. But you argued with me and said you were too dirty to sleep in my bed, and then you started crying too, so I finally just gave up and compromised and let you take a bath. With me watching you, so you wouldn't drown. Of course after like 3 minutes you fell asleep in the tub and I had to dry you off and carry you to bed.”
“Shouldn't have asked. I was definitely better off not knowing I did that. But you were watching me in the bath? Did I at least say something inappropriate about it to you?”
“Surprisingly, no. You did when we were arguing though. A lot. You just kept listing various sex acts and saying you'd do them if I let you shower,” Leon chuckles, and then pecks Luis on the lips. He's trying to be careful because he knows touching Luis could hurt him, but all he wants to do is wrap him in the tightest hug. He really thought Luis was dead, and still struggles to wrap his head around Luis being alive and here. “But whatever, how do you feel? You need another pill?”
“I feel a lot better, actually,” He doesn't feel better. He actually feels worse. But he hates that the pill fogged his memory up so badly. He'd rather deal with physical pain than mess his mind up again. “Maybe if you have something over the counter, but I don't want to take anything strong again.”
“I know I said you were annoying, but it's really not a big deal. I'd rather have you be annoying than be in pain.”
“Seriously, Leon, I don't want it. Even before you told me about last night, I was planning on stopping it in the next couple days. I want to be in my right mind so we can start our life together right.”
Leon frowns for a second, then gets up and kisses the top of Luis's head, not minding how disgusting his hair is. “I'll see if I have anything over the counter. Eat something while I'm gone.”
Nothing is appetizing to Luis. But he knows he needs to eat, and he knows eating will make Leon happy, so he manages to choke down a couple packs of fruit snacks.
“Ibuprofen,” Leon says, handing Luis a glass of water and some pills. He smiles when he notices the empty wrappers. “Glad you're eating. Got a hot bath ready for you. Figured you'd want a real one, so you can actually get clean instead of falling asleep immediately.”
“I do want to get clean, but why a bath? It's basically sitting in your own filth.”
“It's not that bad. It's like doing the dishes.”
“What the hell does that even mean..?”
“You have really nasty dishes, then to get them clean you let them soak in hot water and soap. Then you just have to rinse ‘em off. But it's not just about the cleanliness. The hot water will be good for your pain.”
“You make compelling arguments. Bath it is.”
“You're not going to ask for me to watch?”
“I'm genuinely so excited about just getting all this grime off me that I don't feel like making a joke. But if you want to watch… I certainly won't object.”
Despite his protests, Leon insists on helping Luis walk to the bathroom, and he does stay in the room after helping him into the bath. Not even for an inappropriate reason, he's just missed Luis so much, to the point he hates the thought of leaving him alone, even if it's just in the next room.
“Leon? I need– uh, I need your help,” Luis hates asking for help, so he decides to finally add a joke to put himself a bit more at ease. “Not for anything perverted, so don't get too excited. Just– Can you wash my hair for me? Don't know if I can even bend like I'd need to.”
“Of course. Should be last though, when you're done,” Snapped out of his idle mind, Leon starts to pay more attention to Luis, and he's kicking himself for not doing so sooner. When he's just laying back and just soaking, the hot water is soothing and he looks content. But every square inch of Luis's body either has dirt, blood, or both, and needs scrubbed. And Luis winces almost every time he has to bend in a new way, to reach a new unwashed spot. That explains why he'd phrased his request like he couldn't be able to wash his own hair at all. He wouldn't ask for help if it would just hurt. Leon scoots to sit on his knees beside the tub, reaching a hand out to Luis's hand with the washcloth. “Don't like watching you hurt yourself. Let me?”
Luis does hesitate to hand the washcloth over. For over half of his short life, he's been fiercely independent. The day his grandfather died, he was alone in the world and it was trial by fire. He made it out of Valdelobos himself, armed with nothing but maps, a bit of food, and a guitar. Then when he made it to civilization, there was so much more he had to learn, and quickly. He learned where not to sleep. He learned where pity would buy him a full belly, and just how often he could exploit each bleeding heart before their generosity would be stretched too thin and they'd stop feeding him. He learned to listen to his gut instincts and avoid any situations that he had a bad feeling about.
Actually, cross out that last one. Eventually he wanted to do more than just beg, so he started playing guitar on street corners to scrounge up enough to keep him fed. There was a woman who stopped by everyday. She struck up a conversation, asking about his life, why he was on the streets, if he had any family, etc. Despite the nagging feeling in his gut that something was wrong, he spoke freely, bragging about everything he had done all by himself. And then she asked if he'd heard of Umbrella, if he'd be interested in taking some tests to see if he'd be a good fit for a special boarding school…
Even at the boarding school, he was alone. They were all kids, but Umbrella buttered them up with compliments about how mature they were. They were expected to act like adults and treated like they were, never being given any slack. There was no being taken care of, ever. If you got sick or hurt, you were expected to just grin and bear it and keep working, or else…
So needless to say, being taken care of is very foreign to Luis. Letting anyone take care of him is weird, and uncomfortable. But he does give in, and surrenders the washcloth to Leon and closes his eyes.
“All clean, from the neck down,” Leon eventually says. “You want me to wash your hair now, or soak longer?”
It's a tough call. Luis wants to, but isn't sure it's a good idea. Mostly because the water feels too good, and he had been so exhausted that even those 16 hours weren't enough. It makes him worry he'll doze off. Of course Leon would prevent him from drowning, but it would be embarrassing, and apparently he still has a tiny scrap of dignity left that he doesn't want to give up.
“Just do my hair.”
“Be right back.”
Leon comes back holding a pitcher. And without pants on.
“I didn't take my pants off for anything perverted, so don't get too excited,” Leon grins as he parrots Luis's words back to him. “Just relax and sit in a way that doesn't hurt. All I need you to do for me is tilt your head back so I can rinse without getting water in your eyes.”
Luis slides more towards the middle of the tub. Leon sits on the edge of it, one foot on the bathroom floor, the other in the tub. First he has to go through the tedious process of getting Luis's hair untangled. He doesn't get frustrated or annoyed by how long it's taking, he just keeps gently untangling knots with his fingers. Eventually he reaches for the faucet and turns it on just long enough to fill the pitcher.
“Wish I had a nicer bathroom, with a detachable shower head,” Leon mumbles, as he starts pouring the pitcher to wet Luis's hair, being careful to make sure all of it is saturated enough, and none is dripping down his forehead. Luis has no complaints. Something about the way Leon pours the water feels nice on his scalp. “Should have just gotten us a hotel really. Could’ve had a tub big enough for both of us, would have made it easier to wash you.”
“This is fine,” Luis says. “It's good. I don't think I would have been willing to swallow my pride and ask for help if there was a chance you would get into a tub full of dirt and my blood.”
“Guessing you want to shower for a couple minutes to rinse all the soap off, so I'll go get you a towel now while you do that?” Leon asks when he's done with Luis's hair. “Put one in the dryer when I got the cup, so it would be warm for you.”
“Wait, Leon, can you…” Luis trails off. Leon has already done so much. He was thoughtful enough to go out of his way just so Luis's towel would be warm. “Nevermind.”
“I'm not getting up until you tell me what you were going to ask me to do.”
“I was going to ask you to rinse me. Something about the way the water felt while you poured was relaxing. But that would take forever, I'll just shower.”
“I got all night,” Leon says, reaching for the cup again. “I really don't mind. Actually like getting to take care of you. You deserve it. Remember in Raccoon City, how you'd be demanding to look at me and thoroughly clean so much as a paper cut. Just let me return the favor. Please.”
Please really is a magic word. At least it is when Leon says it.
“Okay… And you can help more with my hair, after I'm rinsed. Blow dry it. I'd usually braid it or wake up with knots, but just pulling it up into a bun should be fine.”
“I can braid it for you!" The way Leon's whole face lights up with excitement over the fact he can help Luis… Yeah, he can get used to this, he can learn to let himself be taken care of, if it means Leon keeps giving him looks like that. “Sherry doesn't have a lot of good memories with her parents, but she did miss her mom doing her hair. I got Barry and one of his older daughters to start teaching me that kind of stuff. I'm not great at it yet, but I'll try.”
“Well, I'm perfect for you to practice. I don't care how it looks, just don't want knots.”
“You are perfect for me. In a lot of ways. Wait, did I ever tell you that I fucking hated you when I first saw you?"
“You definitely did not. I would never forget hearing something so heartbreaking!” Luis says over dramatically. He'd be dramatically clutching his chest if moving didn't hurt so much. “But seriously, what? You were the one looking at me first! I went to talk to you because you were giving me serious bedroom eyes. I didn't even hesitate to leave the woman I was talking to, because I thought I was going to get to have sex with you instead.”
“I mean, you did get to have sex with me. Eventually. But I wasn't even interested in you at first, I just wanted to know how you looked so stupid and still got a girl.”
“You're telling me you thought I looked stupid? Do you think I forgot about how I was doing my best to be patient for once in my life and not try to sleep with you right away, and then all of a sudden you forgot you were shy and asked me to suck your dick in the parking lot! You liked me!”
“Jesus Christ, Luis,” Leon says. “Just shut the hell up and let me finish the fucking story!”
“You're so mean to me, Leon. Telling me you thought I looked stupid, telling me to shut up, it's like you don't even love–” Luis cuts himself off with his own laughter. It's a laugh that hurts his ribs, but he's not sure he cares too much. Poor Leon just looks so baffled. “I'm sorry. I just wanted to kiss you, but I couldn't reach you without hurting myself. I knew you would kiss me if I sounded sad and said anything about you not loving me, but I just couldn't keep a straight face because you've been sitting here pouring–”
This time Leon cuts him off, with a kiss.
“There. If that was what you wanted, all you had to do was ask. You didn't need to go crazy like that,” Leon gives Luis one more kiss, on his forehead, before going back to rinsing. “You got what you wanted, so now you can shut up and let me finish rinsing you and telling you the story.”
“What I kept trying to get to is that I hated all that shit about you, until we were closer. You fucking broke me, I swear. I'd only ever been into girls, and then I got up close, and saw that your stupid tangled hair was actually just beautiful curls, and your stupid tight pants showed off your stupid hips.”
The phone rings before Leon is done rinsing. He murmurs an apology and says he'll be right back. Luis starts to come to an upsetting realization: He’s not as fine as he thought. The hot water was doing some heavy lifting. Now he's cold, and every piece of his body aches.
“Shit, Barry, bad time. Can you give me like half an hour, and I'll call back? Just let Sherry stay up 'til then.”
“Oh no, he's actually awake now! Sorry, didn't even realize how that would have sounded to you. Just bad timing because he needs some help with his hair. Got too caught up in the relief of him waking up to realize it was getting close to Sherry's bedtime, or I would have called already.”
Sherry. Luis wishes he didn't fucking hurt. He puts his arms up, to try to stand up again and shower, so that Leon wouldn't have to waste time rinsing Luis with a fucking pitcher. But he can't do it. Everything hurts.
“Thank you so much. Go ahead and tell Sherry he woke up, but don't say anything about him being ready to talk to her. I know he wants to, but obviously he's still not great, so I don't want her to be disappointed if he falls asleep or doesn't feel up for it tonight. I'll still talk to her, of course.”
Luis starts crying.
“Sorry, that was just–” Leon stops when he sees Luis's face. “Luis, what's wrong?”
“I… I heard what you were saying. I wanted to get up and shower myself so you could call Sherry sooner, but I'm worse than I thought I was. Tried to a couple times, couldn't get myself up.”
“It's okay. I'll do this faster, if you want to hurry?” Luis nods. Before Leon had gently poured, slowly and methodically making sure that water would reach everywhere it needed to, and feel good for Luis. Now he pours quickly, almost dumping it on him. Luis isn't upset at all, he wants to get to Sherry. The hairdryer cord is long enough that Leon blow dries it while Luis is still sitting in the tub, so that he can get Luis straight from the tub to the bed. Once his hair is mostly dry, Leon is reaching into the tub with the warm towel, scooping Luis up in it. “I got you, Luis. Always will.”
It's not at all difficult for Leon to lift Luis, which Leon has mixed feelings about. Leon wasn't even as strong as he had been in Raccoon City, having given up on all the police training. He had still been going to the gym, but wasn't as serious about it. Picking Luis up should be doable for him, but not easy. But Luis had lost enough weight while gone that Leon didn't need to be that strong to carry him. He sets him on the bed as gently as he can.
“I'll go get your medicine.”
“No, Leon, still don't want it. I want to talk to Sherry.”
“Luis, please,” Time for an experiment: Can Luis resist Leon saying please? “You told me yourself, you're worse than you thought. You're in pain, you need your medicine.”
“Compromise. Let me talk to Sherry first, read to her, then after I'll take the pill without arguing at all,” No, he cannot resist it. “I promise. I'll even let you take me to another doctor for a second opinion tomorrow…”
“… Okay. I'll be right back," Leon returns with the phone and a book he sets down on a night stand. He keeps the phone wedged between his face and shoulder, so he can talk to Barry while he puts a shirt on Luis and tucks him under the covers. “Hey, Sherry. Sorry I'm late, but I got a surprise for you.”

I do wish the Umbrella Chronicles retelling scenarios were better. One of the best things about Darkside is the fact that Leon and Claire stick together for the majority of RE2 doing everything together and it fucks so hard. Having Chris and Jill stay together for all of the mansion could have been so damn good, but they just dropped the ball and left out so much. One of the things I was excited about going into it was finally playing a version of RE1 with the canon ending, because
Tumblr media
And it seemed like a no brainer that Umbrella Chronicles would be the perfect opportunity to remedy that. But no! Barry is not in the game. Barry does not exist in Umbrella Chronicles. His name isn't even mentioned. And there's just so much over stuff left out too. The Darkside RE2 retelling doesn't have everything, but it has enough to feel like a well rounded faithful telling. Chronicles RE1 felt very incomplete. On top of leaving stuff out, Chris and Jill don't really have a lot of conversations. They talk a bit, but with how long they were together they definitely could have had some longer and maybe less generic talks.
I kinda wish they just didn't make the fourth Umbrella's End scenario. It was actually really fun and I enjoyed it, but it doesn't feel all that necessary. Like compare to the Darkside Chronicles structure, which was 3 scenarios. 2 retellings, RE2 and CV, and then a new scenario with previously unknown events, Operation Javier. Unfortunately Umbrella Chronicles has 4 scenarios, 3 of them being retellings, in addition to each retelling scenario having at least a couple bonus missions with new previously unseen events! I feel like they bit off more than they could chew.
With the bonus missions we get to see some extra Rebecca mansion stuff, Wesker fighting Lisa Trevor and escaping the mansion right before it blows up, Ada being able to make it out of Raccoon City alive because Wesker told her the plan to blow it up and that there would be a helicopter she could escape on, etc. That was stuff we didn't really know before. We really didn't need to see Chris and Jill raid the last remaining Umbrella facility to declare that Umbrella was officially over, we knew Umbrella was gone after the trials. The most significant thing about the Umbrella's End scenario is Wesker finally fighting Sergei, a Russian Umbrella dude who was in a lot of the other Wesker bonus missions, and downloading all of Umbrella's data before blowing up the facility they were in. But like, I don't think we really needed Chris and Jill to storm into Russia in order for Wesker to fight his nemesis. (The game makes it seem necessary by Wesker using Chris as a pawn to fuck the facility up before going in himself so he doesn't have as much to do, but idk, there's definitely other ways it could have gone down)
I think the game would have been a lot better if they put a little more into the retelling scenarios instead of making Umbrella's End. Again, the DSC retellings are very good and felt complete because they're longer and therefore cover more ground. And I'd say they're more than just good retellings, they bring new things to the table. Not a ton, but the extra screen time together and dialogue between the protagonists and both characters experiencing events only one did originally definitely deserves to be mentioned as a pro.
The Umbrella Chronicles bonus missions are enough to serve as the Operation Javier aka new lore role, it didn't need a shoehorned Umbrella is over plot because, again, WE ALREADY KNEW HOW UMBRELLA FELL. They really did not need to pull a "oh well akshully their stocks crashing wasn't the end of Umbrella, after the trials they had one huge facility left with BRAND NEW BOWs and Chris and Jill stormed in and it blew the fuck up dramatically" retcon.
The bonus missions felt more significant plot wise because they filled in gaps. This might sound goofy, but I do feel like I have a more comprehensive understanding of RE overall after some of the bonus missions, especially the one with Wesker escaping the mansion and the one with Ada.
But maybe I'm just biased because I think Umbrella's end happening offscreen because of capitalism was a frustrating but perfect way to end it, and a Chris and Jill and a shit load of soldiers dramatically storming and destroying one facility and then declaring the global company Umbrella was gone for good climax was a lot less compelling. Like I've seen a shit load of facilities get blown up in RE and a lot of the time it doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. I mean in this game alone I watched the training facility blow up, the mansion blow up, and Raccoon City blow up, and none of that was the EnD oF uMbReLlA, so seeing yet another Umbrella thing blow up does absolutely nothing for me at this point. A simple statement that the trials caused Umbrella's stock to plummet which eventually destroyed the company actually feels a hell of a lot more satisfying/dramatic/definitive/etc. to me than yet another "place with Umbrella monsters go boom boom" ending because it's not something I've seen happen so many times that it loses the punch yknow
And I know that Darkside Chronicles came after Umbrella Chronicles so it being better is likely a case of them learning from their mistakes, but I'm still just sad about how much better it could have been. An actual canon RE1 ending where everyone who is supposed to live does, lots of Chris and Jill banter, we were robbed.
