Something I keep coming back to when thinking about Jamil is that, among the OB! Students, he might be the one who’s twisted from a disney “good guy” as much (or even more) than from the respective villain. And yes, I’m well aware that none of the characters are very one-note Disney villain, but with Jamil it just strikes such a chord with me.

Of course, he represents Jafar who has always resented being second best and who betrays the sultan to overtake the Nr. 1 position and all the power that comes with it. And during Book 4 (and now also Book 7), we can see Jamil equally backstabbing Kalim and planning to continue with the other housewardens and the headmage. That’s not a hot take, I understand that (whaaaat Jamil is twisted from Jafar?? Who would’ve guessed /j)

But with Jamil, I feel like his motivation for striving for power is a little different. For someone who has grown up in the world of the Asim family and has been with Kalim his entire life, I believe Jamil equates power with his actual goal in life: freedom.

So when he says “You really are my genie of the lamp, Azul” it felt sooo ironic to me, because it’s you! You are the genie, Jamil!

Just like the Genie’s “phenomenal cosmic power, but itty-bitty living space”, Jamil objectively has a lot of intelligence, talent and drive to excel at something, yet the space he has in which he can live and cultivate those aspects of his personality is very, very limited.

Both characters are also forced into their prison by the circumstances of their birth. Jamil was born into the Viper family, Genie was born a genie, and now they have to spend a lifetime of granting the wishes of other people.

For them to gain the freedom they so desperately want, both characters rely on the mercy of the people they serve, who they are useful to. But deep down they know their wish won’t ever be granted.

Genie has been promised his freedom a lot of times, just for the person’s third wish to be for their own gain after all when push comes to shove. Jamil has heard Kalim call him his best friend, just to turn around the next second and demand something else of him, wielding his power over him once more.

Besides, even if Kalim did give Jamil his freedom (if he even can, considering his family might step in), it’s shown that Jamil cares very deeply for his family, so I don’t think he would consider it “freedom” if his family was still serving the Asim household, which has an even slimmer chance of ever changing.

So yeah, I find the inspiration Jamil’s character takes from the Genie so interesting and at the same time it makes me want to tear out my heart. Please, he deserves so much (peace and quiet most of all) and I want to give him everything ㅠㅠ

Can I ask for headcanons of Jamil Kalim Ace and Deuce with a reader who’s like Aladdin? With a whole monkey familiar like Abu too if you’d please!!

The reader gets chased by fancy pants snobby rich students on the regular by pickpocketing them either himself or with the help of their familiar, stealing food from the cafeteria and parkouring around the school to escape… they grew up in the scalding sands too probably wears a really worn out second hand uniform as well since the reader isn’t well off

-Sometimes you'd be running from snobbish rich people after pickpocketing from them and Kalim would be right there next to you running aswell!

-You guys first met after you stole some expensive chocolate from him while you got your pet monkey to distract him. (Bubu im not creative)

"Bubu! Where are you-" You yelled before Kalim appeared infront of you holding the monkey with a few scratches, and... chocolate?! Bubu quickly hopped back to your shoulder.

"Here! You wanted these right? I have plenty! Lets share!" He beamed. It confused you. Was this guy.. being serious??

-Expect a new uniform just for you with a little note that says

"Lets be friends!! - Kalim c:" to which you deadpanned at.. you stole from this guy regularly.

-Whenever jumping from building to building trying to escape gets tiring, count on Kalim to pop up uncontrollably flying his carpet..

"Wha-Whoah...Whoah!!! Gah-!" Trying to balance yourself on the unsteady carpet gripping onto Kalims shoulders for dear life.

JAMIL VIPER

-First met when you stole a fancy looking gem and before you could wander off, he gripped your wrist stopping you from leaving. Giving you a look of disdain he shakes his head like a disappointed mother.

...Did you know this guy..? He treats you like a little kid whenever you steal.. However, he'd never rat you out.. which confused you.

-The first time he saw you swiping from the cafeteria, he ended up paying for your lunch sighing.

"Don't you have food? Or something to make?"

"...I don't have money for food and I can't cook."

-From that day on he started making you lunch and even teaching you how to cook with ingredients you steal

"Mm! Thif ish sho goof!" Eating curry whilst talking to Jamil to which he looks at you with shame.

"Close your mouth when eating."

-You got Bubu to swipe a chicken sandwich from Ace's hands which caused him to chase after Bubu, dragging Deuce with him.

-Once they found the monkey passing you the sandwich they felt conflicted as they watched you eating so happily with your familiar, yet.

"Oi. Your monkey stole my sandwich." he points accusingly at Bubu who blows a raspberry in response which only annoys Ace further.

You decide to use your ultimate charm since you knew you couldn't escape from a guy who does track and a guy who punched his housewarden..

A cute innocent facade. You tilt your head with a small smile on your face. You can see the struggle on Deuces face trying not to fall for it while Ace seemed unfazed but in the end he sighed.

"You.. can have it... But! You owe me one, yeah?" cringing at his own words.

-After that Deuce would occasionally come to your dorm with a few treats for you and Bubu enjoying the smile on your face.

-Whilst Ace would just pinch your cheeks really hard if you swipe anything of his.

Jamil Viper

At first, Jamil didn’t care for you and your antics. As long as you didn’t endanger Kalim or his own sanity, he was fine to just leave you be.

As you two started getting closer though, he found himself laughing at your jokes and snide comments. Sometimes he would even make some himself.

He found himself envying your free spirit. No one could tell you what to do and how to act, you were your own force of nature. A stark contrast to the life he lives.

The two of you talk about places you’d like to travel to. It was both yours and Jamil’s wish to travel the world, maybe even together.

You manage to teach him to loosen up, just a little. If he isn’t watching after Kalim, you might be able to rope him into some stupid shenanigans. As long as the consequences aren’t too severe, he does still have to look good for house Al Asim.

“I had a feeling you were the cause of all this noise. No, I’m not helping you hide from Housewarden Riddle, that’s your fault for trying to pickpocket his watch.”

Kalim Al Asim

Kalim loves the energy that you have! You two are practically always together, making jokes and planning tricks.

You are invited to every party Scarabia hosts; you always end up having the best party tricks. Sometimes people show up just to see what you come up with this time.

Even outside of parties, you guys are inseparable. During classes, you are the professor’s worst migraine but somehow still manage to get your work done before the bell.

He invites you to ride the flying carpet fairly often. You look around the entire dorm while talking about pretty much anything. He trusts you a ton, and tells you everything that’s on his mind.

“Hey! Are you free this Thursday? I’m throwing a party to celebrate the end of midterms. It’d be great if you could swing on by, everyone loved your ‘one person band’ routine.”

Najma Viper

Najma absolutely loves your company. You guys are always doing something stupid, like running from the street vendors, or just mildly bothering Jamil.

Your jokes make her double over in laughter. You know those conversations where everyone keeps adding to the joke until no one can talk with how hard they’re laughing? That’s a regular occurrence with you guys.

She’s amazed when you show off your talents to her. Especially if you manage to swipe her earring without her noticing! Just be sure to give it back.

Even when you guys are being serious, she really appreciates that you’ve always got her back. No matter the circumstance, she knows she can turn to you to lend an ear.

“Hey! Can you do that card trick again? I wanna give my brother a scare before he heads off for the day.”

Unique Magic:

Friend Like Me: By entrusting their lamp to another person - or “master” - Maram is able to access near cosmic powers. The spells must be made in the style of a wish by the “master” that Maram then fulfills. Due to the strength of the magic, Maram can only fulfil three “wishes” before to much blot is accumulated.

I know I said I was going to work on Yuri and Roma’s sprites…but Maram has been on my mind and I needed to get them in colour 🫣

For those who are new, Maram Grant is twisted from Genie from Aladdin and takes inspo from both animated and live action versions! I mention someone named “Ali” later on (like once lol), that’s my TWST!Aladdin; his full name is Amir Ali but he often goes by just “Ali” or “Al”.

Much of Maram’s basic info is available in the concept sketch post linked above, so I’m going to try to just clear up a few other things I’ve thought of.

Maram doesn’t attend traditional mage schools like NRC or RSA. I’m really leaning towards the idea that genies have their own schooling system. This is primarily because they use their lamps in place of mage stones. I imagine young genies start learning to control their magic early on through their parents (so they can attend elementary/middle school with other kids) and go through more structured learning in high school.

Genies primarily live in small communities like towns or villages similar to humans. Some communities are more nomadic than others and enjoy traveling around the Scalding Sands. The bulk of genie communities are located in the Scalding Sands, but there are some scattered communities in other areas of Twisted Wonderland. Maram claims her uncle lives somewhere in the Sunset Savannah, and that they have a friend who goes back to the Shaftlands when school is closed for breaks.

The big thing I wanted to touch on is that “Friend Like Me” isn’t technically a unique magic like what we’ve seen in game. This particular power is something all genies have access too, but because Maram is friends with a number of mages (i.e. Kalim, Jamil, and Ali) they decided to give the ability its own name. It’s just a little bit of Maram’s fun loving nature poking through.

Aside from the obvious risk of overblot when casting such powerful spells, there’s a lot of trust that goes into casting these spells. I mentioned in the concept post that to genies their lamps are everything to them; it’s how they monitor and recover from blot and they can act like little homes for the genies if they want. The big thing is that each genie revives a lamp and pair of bracelets when they’re young and is special to the individual. Genies can’t enter the lamps of another genie unless they’re given permission which is rare. The bracelets can be replaced if necessary as they’re closer to the concept of magical pens. The lamps, however, are nearly impossible to replace if lost or broken. Given the fact that the lamp has to be given to another person, there has to be a lot of trust between both parties.

Likewise, the genie has to be sure that the person they are entrusting their lamp too isn’t going to make any stupid “wishes”. This includes things that the genie could conjure up easily, without the need to access such powerful magic. The risk of overblot is not worth conjuring up money, food, clothes, etc. which they could normally do with ease

Ngl between Kalim and Jamil, Maram trusts Jamil with their lamp much more than Kalim. As much as they love Kalim’s friendship, Maram feels like Kalim would make an impulsive request out of excitement 😅

And just a silly little fact about Maram, they really like the colour blue and enjoy big Ol’ pants like jupe-culotte/harem pants.

And that’s all I wanted to clarify! Like always feel free to ask any questions, I’ll try to answer as best I can with what I have already figured out!

House of Mouse AU: Yuu and the Princess and the Frog Characters

*bangs fists on table* Mum Tiana! Mum Tiana! Mum Tiana!

I always see Tiana as the mum friend of the princesses and that is absolutely correct. She sees Yuu and is like: is anyone going to mother her? *Minnie and several other characters are about to raise their hands* No? Okay! Here sweetie, have some gumbo and beignets 😊

She just sees how hard Yuu works in a world where all odds seem to be against her and she’s still  smiling and making due with what she has when all she has is literally nothing just so touched. Besides she knows a thing or two about the restaurant business - if Yuu looks like she needs a hand, Tiana will be there to help and to remind her to take a break. And nobody is going to interrupt that break if they don’t want to answer to her.

Yuu definitely has a job offer for Tiana’s Place 

She’s not going to let Yuu get bullied by anyone either. When she first found out about Sam and his friends from the other side, alarm bells started ringing but Yuu was quick to comfort her by saying how Sam is like a cool protective older brother and how he gives her discounts and stuff and would never let harm come to her so she reluctantly lets it go. But don’t worry, she’s friends with an alligator and is a master at knife-wielding (and she has many knives) and as Ralph Breaks the Internet has taught us, she is not afraid to use a rolling pin.

Dr Facilier literally gave Yuu a grin and before he could open his mouth, Tiana had gently taken Yuu’s hand and guided her away whilst giving the shadow man a deathly glare.

Charlotte adores Yuu. She’s like the fun aunt that always brings super expensive presents every time she visits. Every time Yuu stops at her table, she’s just bursting with happy energy, ready to hear about all of the boys at NRC.

When Naveen isn’t busy giving his wife the biggest heart eyes ever, being chaotic with Aladdin and Eugene or getting too invested in the Yuu ship war, he’s just ready to give Yuu all of the appreciation in the world because damn, he was worried when his parents cut him off as a grown man but Yuu is literally a penniless teenager living in a dangerous, broken down, abandoned building with no way of contacting her friends/family/loved ones and she has no magic in a world where literally everyone else has magic and she’s an only girl in an all boys school (and yeah, Naveen might have been an ignorant, carefree party boy who flirted with literally everyone but he knows that there are guys out there who are dangerous. Just because he’s very big on consent doesn’t mean the rest of the world is).

Like he literally sees this sweet, kind girl and he and Charlotte are already making kidnapping adoption plans.

Tiana: *right when she and her husband are about to enter the club* Now honey, I know that you think that Yuu would be happier with us but remember she has her friends and sort-of adoptive father back at her school and kidnapping is illegal here. And yes, it is still considered kidnapping even if she comes willingly.

Louis and Ray love Yuu. They work with Naveen to compose the most incredible song for when it’s time for her and her suitor to dance together (the PatF gang all ship KalimYuu by the way)

Dr Facilier thinks Yuu is cool. Both of them are living with disadvantages and don’t really have that much control over their lives - only instead of living with resentment like he does, she just marches on. She knows better than to make a deal with him though *Azul memories intensify* but he’s a really charming and charismatic guy. He’s fun to hang around with when you watch out for him trying to swindle you. Yuu always talks about Sam and how cool she finds him and his shadows and the two of them talk about voodoo and hoodoo and yay *new friend unlocked*

Kalim Al-Asim Character Analysis

Kalim is an interesting character as far as Twisted Wonderland characters go. Simply because he goes to the "villain" school, even though he's a relatively nice person. Of course, he's not the only kind character in the cast, but because of the school he goes to, it makes it interesting.

Which is probably in part, because he is based off of the Sultan from Aladdin. Something I think people seemed to frequently forget about, because at the end of the day it is in large a part of who Kalim is.

He isn't based off of Jasmine or Aladdin because he doesn't want to fight the system, he is the system. Even if he is a very kind version of it, it doesn't change the fact that Kalim stands above most people. Which is not a fact that Kalim is ignorant to, seeing as he does have to be wary of the benefit given to him, simply because he can be poisoned at any time.

A fact that he is constantly aware of. He won't take any food from anyone, if it's not from Jamil. He wouldn't even eat the food both him and Ruggie made together, which multiple people were eating, because of the wariness. Sure, in part its because he promised Jamil that he wouldn't eat any food Jamil didn't make, but the whole reason that promise was made was because the fear of being poisoned.

He actually talks about it frequently. Maybe he doesn't out right say poisoned, instead just saying an "upset stomach", but that's exactly what he means. It's so normal to him, he can talk about it with ease. It's why so many other people become uneased once they realize what Kalim is actually talking about, because that's not normal. He has to worry about it so much that he carries around different herbs, seen in Fairy Gala, on the possibility that he is poisoned. He, ironically, is a more paranoid character than people give him credit for.

I won't get in to how I think this reflects in Jamil's relationship with Kalim, as I'll get into that in another analysis, I just think it's something to consider.

However, that paranoia is something to keep in mind. Simply because even after Jamil betrayed him, Jamil is still the one person that Kalim can trust. I think that's why Kalim talks about being friends, but there hasn't been any discussion on freeing Jamil from his servitude to Kalim. While Kalim adores Jamil, he benefits from Jamil being the one to serve him. He can trust Jamil not to physically harm him or poison him and to prevent others for doing so. He wants to be Jamil's friend so it'll ease the relationship between the two, but there is no discussion on freeing Jamil because of how Jamil benefits him. It's not something he can just let go because the danger his birth puts him in.

This is probably something Kalim learned from his parents. Not to say that Kalim doesn't care for others genuinely, but from the little we've seen and heard of Kalim's parents, they probably act that same way with the rest of the Viper's as Kalim acts with Jamil. It's probably why Jamil's parents feel so much loyalty to them, hence trapping them overall in a vicious cycle. Because it's a relationship that benefits the Asim's the most, even if they do genuinely care about the Viper's.

Of course, that's not to say that this is the only aspect of Kalim's character. Far from it. The constant paranoia isn't the most obvious trait of Kalim's, as much as Kalim's habit of bulldozing over people's own wants and needs for his own is. Which is another thing that Kalim does. Constantly.

He doesn't do it maliciously; he honestly doesn't even realize that he is doing it. Because he's use to being home, to having everyone bend over backwards for him. That's his normal. And since no one ever said anything about it bothering them, and now there is only one at NRC that Kalim can trust to go to for these things he could normally go to anyone for, that puts even more pressure on Jamil. And since Jamil won't say anything because of his own position, Kalim doesn't even realize that he's doing it.

Because no one in NRC is going to say anything. Kalim only trusts Jamil enough to go to for these things, and everyone else at NRC won't say anything because of two reasons - One: it isn't any of their business. Two: Kalim's position in his family naturally puts him higher up on the social hierarchy than everyone else, so no one will say anything. 

It's a vicious cycle of Kalim constantly bulldozing over people, not maliciously, because no one can or will say anything.

And then, Jamil overblots. And Kalim gets a real hard look at how his actions have affected people, even if he never met any harm. And I think that's the worst of it. Because Kalim genuinely had the best intentions, he can come off condescending. Azul says this the best, Kalim did nothing wrong, but because of how he was raised he naturally pisses off people of a lower standing of him because he doesn't realize what might be a sensitive topic.

And then another blow to Kalim's ego comes in the form of the VDC. Kalim has now given Jamil permission to express his own personal beliefs, and to go out and do things for himself now, and Kalim is forced to accept just how much has been given to him on a silver platter. That Jamil is that much more gifted than him. And while Kalim would often praise Jamil for his efforts, it was never in comparison to himself because he has unknowingly being condescending in that regard. Of course, he would never compare Jamil to himself, because Jamil always did worse. And now he has to accept that's not because he had a better skill level than Jamil, it's because Jamil was letting him win.

And this understandably frustrates Kalim for multiple reasons. He thought he was doing super well, now he has to accept that he wasn't doing nearly as well as he thought he was. He has to accept that he was being unknowingly condescending to someone he trusts and does see as a friend, and that hurts.

But, Kalim takes this gracefully. He even goes outside of Ramshackle to practice so he doesn't disturb anyone else, so he doesn't disturb Jamil, to get his frustrations out. That way he can actively work on bettering himself, to be the person he thought that he was. Because Kalim is genuinely a nice person, it's just that this kindness comes with its own thorns. Thorns that even he himself isn't aware of.

Original Jamil: ...this person is a friend of my master...

EN Jamil: You're speaking to a friend of my employer...

Original Jamil: I have been assigned to showing my master's school friend around town today.

EN Jamil: I'm showing my employer's friends around town today.

(It is not unusual for Jamil's role to be changed from "servant" to "employee," and Kalim's role changed from his "master" to his "boss.")

Interestingly, Jamil does not refer to other people in the Asim household with the same word!

He uses 使用人 when referring to the other people that Kalim’s parents employ, which is closer in meaning to employees or staff, so no problems here.

For himself, however, he uses the word 従者, which is closer to the English word “servant” (personal attendant / follower / body servant / etc).

Original Jamil: The lord of the manor asked you to wear your dorm uniform for the unveiling, right?

EN Jamil: And that’s why your father told you to come to the party in your uniform, right?

Original Jamil: Word reached the Lord and the Lady, and they told me they wanted to try some…

EN Jamil: Work reached Kalim’s mother and father, and they told me they wanted to try some.

Jamil uses extremely formal speech when speaking about Kalim’s mother and father.

Original Cater: Our cute guides of the Scalding Sands increased by one!

EN Cater: Yeah, why settle for one guide, when we could have two?

This is a difficult sentence to put into English, but Cater isn’t just saying that now they will have a cute guide, in reference to Najma; he is specifically calling both Viper siblings cute.

Removing (or replacing) the word “cute” from Cater’s dialogue is not new for the EN server.

Like most languages you are generally supposed to avoid repeating the same words over and over again in written Japanese, just like in English. Whenever it’s done in Twisted Wonderland it is generally on purpose and for a story- or character-related reason.

Cater, for example, intentionally refers to everything around him as “cute” as a remnant of the environment in which he was raised.

The “-sama” honorific gets localized into multiple different words for EN.

If Jamil’s expression here was kind of confusing for you, this might be why: he originally says “DOKKAN!”, which is kind of like “boom”? The sound of something exploding/breaking.

It is a direct homage to what Jafar yells in the Japanese-language dub of Disney's Aladdin, during his version of the "prince Ali" song.

It was also a shout-out to Book 4 when overblot-Jamil sent everyone flying into the desert with an explosion (where “DOKKAN!” was translated as “WHOOPEEEEE!” for EN.) Jamil’s DOKKAN is infamous amongst JP server fans, and he is often referred to as Dokkan-senpai.

In the original, English-language Aladdin, Jafar's line there is "whoopee", making the Book 4 use of the line a direct homage, just like the original game :>

A young fae boy who attends school with his ward, Faisal. He speaks a fae language, and while he understands the common language just fine, he can only speak a few words of it, usually having to be translated by Faisal to speak to his classmates. Despite being so young, he’s actually very good at school often looking bored in class.

He comes from a very rich family, and is an only child. Faisal has been his playmate since Faisal was born.

Idk why I decided to make him a kid, maybe it’s cause I wanted him to be one of those silent but still very expressive characters, like tinkerbell in Peter Pan? (Even though I don’t know when I last watched that movie lol) idk, he came into my mind and knew who he was ig lol. I gave him those horns cause I couldn’t remember if scarab beetles had them or not, but I like them so I’m keeping them even though I don’t think they do.

Name: Faisal Mihos

Age: 18

A standoffish person who always looks annoyed, even when he isn’t. He’s been by Yasser’s side since he was young and is the only one able to understand him. He and Yasser are usually seen together.

A long time ago now, Faisal’s family was struggling financially, especially with their newborn. They turned to Yasser’s parents, and in return for food, shelter and money, they would act as keepers for their safes and home, but most importantly as a babysitter and friend to their own newborn child, Yasser. Ever since the older members of the Mihos’ would look after the Khepri’s home and belongings while the younger members would act as playmates and eventual babysitters for Yasser.

I was wavering on where I should put these two, whether it be in NRC or RSA. The deciding factor ended up being that Yasser and Faisal have a fairly good relationship, so because of that they’re in RSA. If it was just Faisal he’d probably go to NRC tbh, but he wasn’t complaining when he got accepted to RSA.

Yasser has gone through the school system a few times before due to his wards, so he’s pretty good at it by now! His playmates technically have to be by his side all the time till he’s old enough to be able to be on his own, but that won’t be for a while now. So since he wants his friends to be happy, he goes with them to get their education!

Part of the reason why these two have a better relationship than Jamil & Kalim is because Yasser is a literal child, so it’s way harder for Faisal to be mad at him compared to Jamil’s anger at Kalim. Plus while the two are chained together in a sense, it’s on a way lower scale than jamikali’s. Like, the Mihos are like, the only ones taking care of the place, and the Khepri’s don’t really care for power and influence or anything. I like to think they’re more so travelers who’ve amassed a lot of wealth over time and need some housekeepers now that they’ve (kind of) settled down. This might maybe change in the future tho? Idk, still working some things out.

But yeah!! Yasser and Faisal!!

Looking Good!

His house is pretty and giant. 

I half expected Malleus to say,  “Oh, this is nothing compared to my house”. I do love how Malleus has a thing for architecture and the history of the buildings. That’s just so cool, and I love history. 

We are looking good! I love it! We are going to have a night out on the town if you ask me! 

I am sorry, but what? Do you not wear the hood? Or, do you poke it through? I need to see that. 

You like the outfit! I like the outfit! Why won’t you come home?! I have to say, I wish Kalim got something. Maybe next time. It is a replica! Oh, that explains a lot! 

Aladdin also stole, but you’re not wrong. 

True. It is a cute love story. Speaking of the Genie, is Azul supposed to him, or do you think we will see a twst! Genie? He better be a himbo. The flower language in this game is amazing. 

So, they respect both sides of the story. That’s amazing. Even though Jafar isn’t the greatest person, he is a good villain. That being said, his boss fights were fun. I really need Sora to be thrown here.

Twisted Wonderland Impressions So Far

- I was initially annoyed that I didn’t get assigned a house, but I love being stuck in the shithole Ramshackle dorm building with a demon cat. I love that everyone acknowledges I am a prefect of this dorm and also that this dorm is shit.

- I love that I technically have 1/2 an enrollment to the school because I have to share it with the demon cat. We are, by our powers combined, one full student.

- I was ALSO initially annoyed that I had to be paired with Ace and Deuce for like the whole first book, but they’ve grown on me! I love how he and Deuce went from strangers to bickery-but-inseparable friends like INSTANTLY.

- bonus points for Ace’s frequent “don’t give us a couple’s name” + “we’re not ALWAYS together” complaints, and meanwhile Deuce does not apparently give a single shit if other students think he’s dating Ace. (Or if he does care, I haven’t gotten to those scenes yet.)

- I don’t know how I feel about this, but Ace says shit like “cool beans” and “excuse us, king.” Cater might be the Instagram kid but Ace for SURE has a tumblr. Feels weird, man.

- Deuce is delightful: he knows exactly one spell, he loves his mom SO MUCH, and he is SO SERIOUS about being a better student and son. 100/10. He has a whole scene where he talks about bargain hunting/sale shopping with his mom and then rescues a classmate from a crush of students all trying to buy sale-price novelty pudding. What a darling.

- Also, the sale-shopping scene was the scene you get when you unlock his PE-uniform card? Like, everyone else’s PE scene is them actually in PE class or doing sports or something; Deuce puts on his PE uniform to better navigate the school sale.

- Kalim and Jamil are lovelyyy. Kalim is so bright and sweet and kind (and he’s one of the only students who has a light-themed attack? I think?), and Jamil is so patient to put up with him? And he so clearly loves Kalim even if Kalim does actively make bodyguard duties as fucking hard as possible.

- Another student is like, “You know, why don’t you just let him die? I would. He’s so much work,” and Jamil’s response is 100% “Don’t ever talk to me again, you sick freak.”

- Just the AU of the sultan and Jafar from Aladdin being childhood best friends and genuinely fond of each other is so surreal and delightful

- Love that the Maleficent house is 1/2 actual students, 1/2... ancient fae beings??? who have decided to attend high school?? One of them is I guess a dragon?? I’m FASCINATED. This house is WILD. Weird vibes all around, I feel like none of them should actually be at this school.

- Love the jazzy music that plays with when the Ursula house students show up. They look like they run a speakeasy. They dress like they’re in The Godfather. They sell one of their classmate’s eel-skin mucus as a skin cream. 100/10.

- #1 Eel boy Jade SEEMS nice and sweet and soft-spoken, but I’m pretty sure there’s an “I sold your soul to Satan for one corn chip” moment coming up.

- Apparently no one in my Potions class is allowed to go on class walks outside because we won’t stop trying to eat the poisonous mushrooms we find in the woods

- the inter-house friendships are very cute?? I haven’t encountered very many of these yet, but I love it when students from different houses are close friends with each other. Kalim being a big brother to Ortho is adorable.

- opposite end of that: Rook being an absolute weirdo to EVERYONE who isn’t human. Big “planning to pull a Most Dangerous Game with his classmates” vibe. BUDDY WHY.

Twisted Wonderland Original Characters

Esmerellis “Esme” Danserai

Background:

Esmerellis is a third year at RSA. He lived in the Rose Kingdom when he was little, but after his parents died he was put under the care of his Uncle who traveled a lot. He hasn’t settled down in one place since he was very young. 

Esmerellis is 19. Like Ruggie he comes from a very poor family. When he was first presented with the opportunity to join RSA at 16, he declined to stay and help take care of his Uncle. The next year when he was 17, he was presented the opportunity again and decided to take it with some persuading from his Uncle.

Fun Facts: 

He’s apart of the “Aladdin Dorm” at RSA (or whatever dorm is the opposite of Scarabia) and has a slight dancing rivalry with Jamil. He does get along with Kalim, however. (Think of the “You’re stupid. I like that in a man.” meme. That’s their relationship.)

Esmerellis has gotten a piece of jewelry from every place he’s ever lived.

He does have a goat familiar, but I haven’t decided a name for it yet. It’ll either be Delilah or Achilles.

His birthday is June 19th.

His Unique Magic is “Dance la Esmerellis.” Somewhat similar to Ruggie’s Unique Magic, he can control the movements of others whenever he plays his tambourine. 

If you are familiar with @wolken-himmel​ then you know that they also have a Twst oc based off of Esmerelda. 

By no means am I trying to copy them or their work. This was an idea I’ve had on my mind for a while. 

I do like the name Esme that they came up with, but I didn’t want to copy it. That’s why his full name is “Esmerellis” and “Esme” is just a nickname that a few people call him.

Tonio Paddison

Background:

Tonio is a second year at RSA. He was raised by his Mother and Grandmother in Port o’ Bliss after his father passed away. He’s Sam’s cousin and maintains a brotherly-relationship with him. Sam taught Tonio everything he knows about business and, before joining RSA, Tonio worked part time at Sam’s Shop at NRC to raise money. Because of this, several third year students at NRC know Tonio (and slightly resent him for going to RSA instead of NRC).

Tonio almost rejected going to RSA, not wanting to leave his mom and grandma, but they wouldn’t let him pass up an opportunity like this. Especially since his grandmother is a very powerful mage and he would excel in magic if given the chance.

Fun Facts: 

He is a member of the “Ariel Dorm” at RSA  (or whatever dorm is the opposite of Octavinelle/Whatever dorm Rielle is in).

In his first year, he helped out in the cafeteria for extra money and his food was so popular, that Ambrose allowed him to open his own restaurant at RSA as long as 10% goes toward the school. Tonio saves most of his funds, but does send some money to his Grandma and Mother.

He and Azul are business rivals.

His Birthday is November 12th. 

He has yet to discover his Unique Magic because he hadn’t explored his magic much until joining RSA, instead focusing solely on academics and working.

Rashad Al-Jasim

Background: 

Rashad is a second year at RSA. He’s from the land of Hot Sands and is Kalim’s cousin. He’s apart of Kalim’s family that is royal and unlike Kalim he’s an only child because his mom passed away when he was young and his father never remarried. Because of this, he’s very close to Kalim and views him as a brother. 

Unlike Kalim, Rashad isn’t naïve and notices Jamil’s resentment. Rashad doesn’t like Jamil because of this, but is at least cordial with him and does have sympathy for this family’s situation. 

Fun Facts: 

He’s apart of the “Aladdin Dorm” at RSA (or whatever dorm is the opposite of Scarabia) with Esmerellis and finds him interesting.

He forbade his father from using any influence on the school to gain him favor (Not that Ambrose would take a bribe, unlike Crowley).

Like Kalim likes elephants, Rashad likes peacocks

He has an orange cat familiar named Rayah (rye-ah).

He doesn’t like people knowing he’s royalty/wealthy, so he doesn’t wear much jewelry. 

His birthday is November 25th

His Unique Magic is “Genie in a Bottle.” He can temporality make someone’s wish come true, but only for a short period of time. The bigger the wish, the sooner time runs out.

I did my best to make Rashad as culturally accurate as I could while still keeping the Disney flair, but if something about his design is inaccurate or insulting please let me know and I will more than happy to fix it.

Rhyme Rosehearts

Background: 

Rhyme is a first year at RSA and is Riddle’s younger brother. When their parents divorced Rhyme went with their father while Riddle stayed with their mother. He didn’t get to see or talk to Riddle much after the divorce, but still tried to keep tabs on his older brother.

Once they both started RSA and NRC, Rhyme was able to officially start contacting Riddle again through letters, but Riddle never responded until after his overblot when he started to take control back from their mother. 

Fun Facts: 

He’s a member of the “Alice Dorm” at RSA (or whatever dorm is the opposite of Heartslabyul/He’s in whatever dorm Che’nya is in). 

He’s more of a free spirit than Riddle since he didn’t live under their mother’s thumb like his brother and has a huge amount of curiosity. He isn’t afraid to ask questions or admit he doesn’t know something.

Che’nya immediately knew that Rhyme was Riddle’s brother and when he told Rhyme that he knew Riddle when they were kids, Rhyme asked Che’nya to tell him everything. That’s how Rhyme knows so much about Riddle after they were separated.

Like Riddle likes hedgehogs, Rhyme likes mice. 

He has a mouse familiar named Earl Grey.

His Birthday is May 4th.

His Unique Magic is “Pass the Sword.” He can give anyone but himself a power up that helps them get stronger, but it loses affect if Rhyme hurts someone. 

I know that Azul’s parents are divorced, but I can’t remember if Riddle said that his parents were divorced or not since he only mentioned his mother in his overblot flashback. If nothing else, I know his parents likely don’t like each other much (it’s somewhat implied in his Ghost Marriage card), so let’s just say they’re divorced.

He knew when he saw the parade of animals that consisted of elephants, monkeys, peacocks and even performers amongst the variety of animals that he would regret the moment where he told Kalim about his crush on you…

“It’s time to impress your crush, Jamil!” Kalim cheered, seemingly more excited than the said-man who was still staring at the parade in disbelief. He knew that the oldest Al-Asim was extra, but isn’t this a bit too much?! “K-Kalim! Why’s there a whole parade here?! I thought I told you to not meddle in my affairs?!” Jamil practically screeched at Kalim who flinched at the tone of his vice housewarden before his bright smile returned, making Jamil groan seeing it making its great return. “I wanted to help you duh! It’s what friends do, right?” Kalim innocently said, not seeing any issue with his rather extravagant idea. Jamil sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose, trying to calm himself before he lost his composure. 

“Yes, this is what friends do. But not to this extent! Why do we even need a whole parade to impress them?! It’s not like it’s their first time visiting and it’s certainly no special occasion to make excuses for this kind of attraction!” Jamil explained, clapping his hands together while staring deeply in the ruby eyes of Kalim. The young heir blinks before nodding slowly. “Hmm… I guess it would look suspicious…” Jamil heaved a sigh of relief hearing that but maybe it was a bit too soon because the next moment he’s choking on air. “Let’s just say this is for a party!” This utterly, blubbering fool-!

Jamil wearily smiles as he shifts uncomfortably on top of the elephant where Kalim used to stand during their trip to the oasis. He’s not used to being up there without Kalim, who gave him a thumbs up and promptly left him using the excuse that he needed to entertain the guests - i.e: scarabia students, first year ‘one-brain-cell’ group, and more importantly, you. He gritted his teeth in frustration and embarrassment. Why did he have to suffer like this? Who the hell did he pissed off in his previous life to deserve this treatment? Why did his mouth have to betray him and slip the one thing he didn’t want Kalim to know-

He sat up straight when he suddenly heard Kalim’s voice in a megaphone, making him raise a brow. Was this part of this so-called plan? Wait what was even the plan- “Make way for Prince Jamil!” One blink. Two blinks. Three blinks. Yep it’s screeching in the head time. He could feel his face heating up at what Kalim said, feeling all eyes on him now. Ahh too bad Kalim took away his hoodie or else he would’ve pulled the strings so hard to cover his face. He was dressed in one of Kalim’s garments, one given to him unexpectedly by Kalim who forced him to wear it. 

“Say hey, it's Prince Jamil!” Kalim’s voice screamed in the megaphone once more, making Jamil wince before gulping when he heard people start yelling out ‘hey’. Honestly, he couldn’t bear to look straight in your directions or else he’ll burst from embarrassment. Ugh whyy- He could feel the elephant moving now, making him hold onto the golden pole that’s holding the cover over him to stabilize himself. When’s this nightmare ending-

“Hey! Clear the way in the old Bazaar!” Kalim’s voice sang in the megaphone but Jamil noticed he sounds considerably louder than earlier, peeking over the edge in front of him, he could see Kalim dancing already with the animals. Jamil sighed, putting a palm on his forehead. Of course Kalim would do this. “Hey you, let us through it's a brand-new star. Oh, come be the first on your block to meet his eye~!” Jamil folded his arms in front of him, letting his index finger tap on his arm on beat. Even though he despises Kalim for his servanthood and his own naivety, he gotta admit that Kalim can hold a tune. “Make way, here he comes! Ring bells, bang the drums - You're gonna love this guy!”

“Prince Jamil, fabulous he, Jamil Viper!” Jamil jumped back when confetti started to appear out of nowhere around him, but he couldn't help but crack a smile. As much as this is embarrassing, it is kinda fun. “Show some respect, boy, genuflect, down on one knee.” Jamil could see Kalim doing some flips here and there. It looks like he was enjoying himself. Jamil kinda wants to join him instead of sitting there looking pretty. “Now, try your best to stay calm! Brush up your Friday salaam - Then come and meet his spectacular coterie!” 

Unable to help himself, he glances at your direction which is a bad mistake since he locks eyes with yours making him flustered and quickly glancing away. But wait, what was that glimmer in your eyes when he locked eyes with you? “Prince Jamil, mighty is he, Jamil Viper! Strong as ten regular men, definitely!” Jamil rolled his eyes at the exaggeration of Kalim. He knew that Kalim was referring to that one memory of them together where Jamil managed to make Kalim believe he can lift 10 men, of course that was before the whole servant fiasco. “He's faced the galloping hordes - A hundred bad guys with swords, Who sent those goons to their lords? Why, Prince Jamil!” 

Rolling his eyes once more at Kalim, he decided that’s enough fun for the young heir. It’s time for his turn to shine! He heard many gasps as Jamil suddenly jumped from the elephant and landed near Kalim, who was as shocked as them but promptly recovered by laughing out loud. “Can’t have you having all the fun now.” Jamil smirked as he started to dance with the rhythm, letting himself get lost to the music. Kalim laughed at what his right-hand man said but said nothing as he continued singing. By now, Jamil has tuned it out as he is now focused on dancing. Maybe he wanted to focus so that he won’t mess up - so that he won’t look bad in your eyes.

Jamil’s eyes snapped at Kalim who pointed in your direction, the direction of one of the balconies of the Scarabia dorm. He glared at Kalim in return, mentally telling him ‘don’t do anything rash’. Kalim only smiled and Jamil knew he’s in it for real now. “Prince Jamil, handsome is he, Jamil Viper! That physique! How can I speak? Weak at my knees! - ow!” Jamil slapped Kalim’s head when he heard what he sang. If earlier he wanted to bury himself, now he just wanted the sun to burn on him!  “So get on out in that square - Adjust your veil and prepare! To gawk and grovel and stare at Prince Jamil, oops.” Kalim let out a giggle, winking at him, making Jamil confused but the confusion was gone as soon as he felt his feet leave the ground. 

The magic carpet managed to catch him off-guard and snag the unsuspecting ‘prince’. Jamil could feel himself flying upwards, closing his eyes briefly before reopening them. To his horror, he was right in front of your face now! He stared dumbfoundedly at you, opening and closing his mouth like a fish out of the water as you giggled at him. Even as Kalim continued to sing in the background, Jamil couldn’t hear him clearly now, getting lost in your eyes. He snapped out of it when you touched his face. Seeing your mischief-filled smile and your mirthful eyes, he knew you were about to tease him. “Greetings Prince Jamil~” 

He lets out a sigh, might as well go along with the roleplay now that he’s in this situation, before smiling back at you. “Greetings (princess/prince). Would a jewel like you go on a small adventure with me?” 

He swore he could hear Kalim cheering for him in the background as he helps you on the magic carpet, letting out a small smile for Kalim and mentally thanking him, maybe Kalim’s ideas aren’t so bad every time.

some thoughts on twst en unique magic/signature spell localization

***Spoilers for chapter 4 of the main story + Trey’s UM!***

I can excuse Trey’s UM being changed from “Doodle Suit” in JP to “Paint the Roses” in EN; the Kanji for Trey’s UM name in the original read as “Paint the Roses”, so it makes sense why EN might go with that name over “Doodle Suit”. The term “Paint the Roses” also has a more obvious and direct reference to Alice in Wonderland, which fits with the vibes of TWST EN (it has a lot more added Disney movie references than what was originally in the JP version). However, I will say that it is slightly jarring to read different words than what the character is speaking (and therefore what I am hearing).

Meanwhile, I cannot say that I completely understand the decision to change Jamil’s “Snake Whisper” to “Snake Charmer” for EN. “Snake Whisper” made so much sense. Jamil is often characterized as a snake (the popular JP fandom emoji to represent him even IS a snake), so when he speaks his UM, he is literally becoming the snake whispering in Kalim’s ear to influence his words and his actions. This is similar, of course, to how Jafar used his snake staff to manipulate the Sultan into doing his bidding in the Aladdin movie.

Personally, I think the localized name, “Snake Charmer”, robs us of a lot of the nuance that “Snake Whisper” had. At first glance, the name seems to make sense, especially considering the effect his magic has on others... but then think back to how Jamil has been characterized so far and it suddenly makes less sense. If Jamil is shown to be the “snake in the grass”, why is he “charming” other people??? Doesn’t that imply that other people, including Kalim, are the snakes, not him? If I’m being generous, maybe this could be excused because, in Jamil’s eyes, the world is his enemy, the place full of snakes that has robbed him of his rightful place. Maybe to him, he isn’t a snake. But honestly? I’m pretty sure Jamil knows he is being underhanded and that he has to be—why else would be work in secret to dethrone Kalim? The same goes for Jafar in the original movie (he worked in secret because he was aware what he was doing would be frowned on by others), which means the new name commits the act of actually obscuring a Disney reference in a UM name.

Going back to the original UM, “Snake Whisper” works well because it better alludes to his personality. As the JP term implies, a “unique” magic is just that: unique to each person, a power formed and cultivated in part by one’s personality and individual traits. In this case, the “whisper” part of “Snake Whisper” may refer not only refer to Jamil’s ability, but also the type of person he is. He works quietly, secretively.

“Snake Charmer”, by comparison, kind of gives the wrong impression of Jamil. Most people associate being a “charmer” with being flirtatious which Jamil definitely is not. He’s nice, sure, but nice is not always a synonym for charming. In fact, the game makes it a point to tell us that Jamil doesn’t stand out and is seen as very “average” by his peers, so he isn’t seen as “charming”, amicable, or even persuasive (another definition for the word “charming”) by most. If we consider the full phrase, “Snake Charmer”, that somehow makes things worse because it can come off as orientalist (not that Aladdin was free of problems, but this just adds to them). Like... do you think the EN audience won’t understand the concept of Jamil’s UM unless you dumb it down to a stereotype? Disney already has a poor track record when it comes to representing other cultures, so maybe I shouldn’t be surprised but... we all expect that they do better.

It’s just a baffling and confusing move overall, and I don’t get it 😞

Currently fueling my Alois is besties with Kalim propaganda by doing a redraw of that one Kuro flashback manga panel of everyone hanging out in the kitchen, except it’s with Jamil, Kalim, and my Aladdin OC’s 😌

I’ve also finally got some semblance of character designs for Amir (TWST!Aladdin) and TWST!Jasmine (I still don’t have a name for her 🤧). I’m really vibing with Amir’s outfit ngl. I didn’t intend for all three of my OC’s to have long hair, but I feel like the long hair is a staple for Jasmine and Amir would absolutely forget to cut his hair if he isn’t reminded to at least trim it.
