HOUSEKI NO KUNI AU

Welcome to my newfound way to scratch the Au idea :P (click on alt to read description if my writing is too crappy to read :'D)

so yeah, recently I re-read HnK and I felt compelled to imagine an AU with the Arc V characters... which I know it will not make sense to a lot of people because it's literally an AU of a spin-off series with a seinen series that despite having a brief popularity period is considered obscure by many, as you can imagine I ended up researching way too much about gemstones, buddhist monk robes, sea creatures and plants.

For those who know nothing about gemstones, hardness of a gemstone is measured with something called the Mohs scale, from 1 to 10, as you can probably guess diamonds are on the 10 on the scale with something like Talc on the 1, hardness is meant to measure a gemstone resistance to scratches and abrasion, BUT just because a gem has a good hardness, it doesn't make it resilient, that's where the things like Toughness and Cleavage comes, because using diamonds as an example again, yes they rate a 10 in hardness, but they are surprisingly easy to break on impact because they have a perfect cleavage, which unlike the name suggest is not a good thing to have, Toughness only has four categories: poor, fair, good and excellent, and diamonds at best, rate on Good, most do on Fair, in contrast a gemstone like Jade that has a 6 in hardness but has an excellent toughness and no cleavage whatsoever so despite being more easily chipped you could say a jade is more resilient than a diamond.

Why did I bother telling you this? Because in Hnk, these stats are kinda important for the gems, more in the beginning than later, but it remains as a worry in the titular gem people.

In this AU I tried to do less equivalences and more like parallels of the HnK plot, but it sort of goes like this:

Yuzu is meant to be Phos, I chose a gemstone that resembled her pink shade the closest but also for minor symbolism purposes, I wanted to choose a gem that was like Phos, brittle and fragile but with lots of motivation, Serena is a blue quartz, I was tempted to make her a harder gem, but I like it better as her being above average idk, Rin was really hard to decide, because there aren't many gemstone that resemble her hair color nor the stats I wanted to portray, I chose Apatite because I feel it was the closest hue, and the closest properties to what I wanted to portray about her: lower on the scale of hardness but resilient, and finally Ruri is a purple topaz because it was perfect for her: highest hardness for the four, but also brittle and perfect cleavage...

Yuya is Kongo-sensei (or Adamant if you prefer that translation) but here I had him being called Brother, both because Yuya looks waay younger than Kongo, but also kinda works on the context of him looking like a buddhist monk, and yes I gave him odd-eyes, I regret nothing :P

Reiji is Aechmea, the Lunarian Prince, the ones who commands the forces that attack the gemstones in search for forcing Yuya does his purpose... his name is an outdated scientific name for the red-spider lily, because in Hnk the lunarians have plant-related names, but also because of spoilery symbolism and meaning of the word, yes, lunarians also have bunny ears, so enjoy him with those :3

You have probably noticed that I didn't mention what character Serena, Rin and Ruri represent... and that's because the other don't have a direct equivalence on the canon HnK, but if you've read the story you'll be able to spot who are they partially based on, but also I wanted to adapt the character arc of Phos into Yuzu while also respecting what they are in Arc V canon.

Under the line, I'll put images, some plot points that I thought about, why under the line? Because lots of it can count as spoilers with no context for Hnk, and one of those is a straight up spoiler for how the main HnK protag ends like, if you ever intent to read it, tread carefully and consider yourself warned. (unless you don't mind spoilers lol)

Chronogical timeline

Serena is taken to the moon and Yuzu loses her arms, while Serena's are recovered.

Yuzu meets Reira and is given the shell, no one knows what to do with until Yuya notices it has Ruri's remains which they scrap off it leaving it to recover it's original blue color.

Reira leaves the shell even as Yuzu tries to give it back but she says that "her ancestor must be resting in piece now because she can't hear her voice anymore", Yuzu gives her a loose piece of herself as proof of forgiveness.

In the following winter he becomes too confident having "learned" Serena's fighting skills and took over winter duty, because most of her body was brittle low in hardness she was already in a pinch and then she heard the voices of the ice floes that distracted her enough for her to lose her legs after an attack, and upon waking up, Yuya realized they only had purple fluorite and Ruri's pieces, which happened to be compatible after a minor test and made Yuzu new legs, now Yuzu's body is barely half of her original body.

During this process, Yuzu becomes increasingly unstable and short-tempered due to the memory loss that comes with losing body parts, while her body and inclusions were very compatible with Serena's and Ruri's remains, her mind has been showing her things that she has no way of knowing, she she asks Yuya about it, it's the first time she heard him say "I'm unable to say anything else" leaving her at loss.

One day she finds Reira ashore again, and this time she sees her humanoid form for the first time, since now she had learned how to use it, and she tries to propose the alliance of the Admirabilis and the gems, unfortunately just as Yuzu was about to be convinced a new lunarian sunspot appears in the sky, and they go after Yuzu.

Just as she was about to be captured, she's rescued by Reira's giant jellyfish form who tries to fight off the lunarians but is instead taken prisoner to the moon, Yuzu doesn't even realize because her head had been taken too, and lies on the shore until another gem finds her unconscious body.

Yuzu wakes up after a coma of 100 years with the surprise that she now has green and short hair and strangely enough, she feels smarter and clear-headed than before. Other gems notice that she acts more like Rin than herself.

And that's all I have so far! Will I ever complete this into a full AU? In doodles or sketches maybe? Will I write a fic about it? ...Probably not ^^' that's why I called it "scratch the itch of an AU"

Houseki no Kuni Sunday 2

MAJOR spoilers for episode 5-8 of Houseki no Kuni

So this time around I went ahead and made notes for each episode that I watched.

I am loving this season so much tbh, though a mutual keeps telling me that that its gonna get divisive way later. Honestly can't wait then

Episode 5

-Phos be needing a lot of help, like oof These people out here needing to fucking scrape them out of a shell, and now they gotta search a whole continent and ocean for them

-youz really a bitch for all of this Ventricosus And right as I was typing this she got her arm blown off, breh

-What did those Lunarians think they were going to do with their little pointy fire sticks on a giant ass snail monster??? I like the tendency of goons to just be stupid in most media lol

-Come on Cinnabar, they just came to you literally missing half off their body:(

(Story in 3 parts) -At least Kongo cares enough that even though Phos is practically useless, they still send out a team to find them. -Ok, I spoke too soon. He ready to kill a bitch -NOOOOOOO KONGO, DON’T TAKE THEM ENCYCLOPEDIA

Other notes: So I was thinking more about Phos getting Ship of Theseus'd. This could be such a good message for, like, how much of yourself are you willing to get rid of just to fit in? To where you're nothing like who you originally were

Episode 6

-The Ice their greatest opp in this episode.

-I don’t think Kongo’s poor gem heart can take much more of this. Bro, just showed up with two entire arms missing. Imagine every time you let your kid out of your sight, they just show up with their skull bashed in

-Kongo comforting Antarcticite is what I needed today

Hello! I was reading one of your HNK theory posts and saw you say Jade was "not really Jade" I love your rambles on geology, so is there a reason you say that? Are they actually a different rock? :D

Good morning Anon! Tricky question you got here, hehe!

I said it because “Jade” is not an actual mineral, but a general name for commercial purposes! No mineral is called “Jade”, but at the same time MANY minerals and rocks could be “Jades”!

Im gonna give a LOONG explanation so i’d better put everyting under the cut.

The commercial “Jade” may be different minerals and rocks, mostly from the Pyroxene mineral group.

Usually, the “jade” is a mix of different minerals, and it’s sometimes called “jadetite”. It’s a metamorphic rock (meaning it’s more minerals fused together at high temperatures, much like Lapis Lazuli). The most common minerals inside “jade jadetite” its mostly Jadeite, others can be Nephrite, Kosmochlor, Serpentine and Omphacite.

the most common “cheap substitute” to jade is Nephrite, with an hardness of 6 and the typical toughness and deep green colour for what is known the jade gemstone. So, when you go buy a “jade”, it’s usually this mineral! Nephrite, too, is not a “real” mineral but more a “mix” between two, Actinolite and Tremolite.

Then there is the rare Jadeite, discovered later than Nephrite, with many colours, harder but more brittle. It’s a Pyroxene mineral.

Kosmochlor is a mineral very similiar to Jadeite and to what “jade” would look like- very green and tough, but it’s too rare to be used in jewelry usually. But when it does, it can be selled as “Jade”. This is also a Pyroxene mineral.

Omphacite is a Pyroxene mineral too, and it’s green and tough too, and can be selled and used as a “jade” not actually being a “jade”. But what’s a jade anyway? It’s all so confused.

Back to the manga character Jade, the only proves i can find to know what mineral is Jade is from the chart from the show.

The hardness is 7 (none of the ones above are 7 in hardness) and the formula is NaAlSi2O6 , that corresponds to a variety of Jadeite called “Soda-Jadeite” or “pure Jadeite”. So our Jade could be a variety of Jadeite, since we learned today that there is no actual “jade”!

hnk characters as stuff I see while stargazing

I’m still taking a break from this series, but this particular shitpost has been sitting pretty on my hard drive for a few months now, and people seemed to like birdseki no kuni, so I think I shall publish it. For the sake of my stress levels, please avoid posting spoilers in the tags.

Phosphophyllite:

Eta Carinae. Can’t decide whether to be one of the brightest stars in the sky, or completely invisible to the naked eye. Covered in dark clouds. A mess. About two minutes from going supernova.

Antarcticite:

The Perseid meteor shower. Really cool, but you only have like half a month to get to know it before it’s gone.

Cinnabar:

Lunar eclipse. Red, edgy, and emo; makes a statement.

Cairngorm:

Shaula and Lesath, aka the Cat’s Eyes asterism in Scorpius. Stares at you with disapproval bordering on contempt.

Padparadscha:

Venus. Bright and beautiful. Light of my life. But it’s only up for a few hours at a time

Ghost Quartz:

The Milky Way. Reticent and shy. Always there, but only visible in ideal lighting conditions. Quite pleasant when it decides to show itself

Diamond:

Canopus. Flashy… But only second best!

Kongou:

Polaris. Everything revolves around him whether he wants it to or not.

Rutile:

Cetus. Oh god, it’s going to eat me!

Yellow Diamond:

Virgo. Just wants to lie down and take a nap.

Bort:

Orion. Swole and overbearing. Always waving a weapon around.

Lapis Lazuli:

Hale-Bopp. you missed it because you were three years old when it passed by. The Gen Xers in your local amateur astronomy club talk about what a profound impact it had on their lives, but you’ve never seen it, and you never will. You are quietly bitter about this.

Alexandrite:

Auriga. Both have goblin energy—Alex because they are a turbo nerd, Auriga because it looks like a garden gnome.

Amethyst:

Mizar and Alcor. Baby’s first binary stars.

Euclase:

Summer Triangle. Always watching over you, (unless it’s winter.) It’s up to you to decide whether or not this is a good thing.

Jade:

Big Dipper. Basic.

Benitoite:

Cassiopeia. Also basic, but less stands out much less.

Neptunite:

Lynx. Hard to see. Skulks around showing only its back. What is it up to? What is it thinking about? You’ll never know.

Zircon:

Canis Minor. Small and has no money, so you can imagine the kind of stress it’s under. Follows Orion around.

Red Beryl:

Corona Borealis. Elegant and fashionable.

Ventricosus:

Arcturus. This star holds a special place in my heart for being the first non-basic star I identified without the help of a chart, at the tender age of eleven. Ventricosus also holds a special place in my heart because she’s great.
