The Nomads: Part 2
Tumblr media
Part 1 - Part 2 - Part 3 - Part 4
“So how do these even work?” She poked at one of Keeleeticktick’s thrusters.
“Hey, don’t touch that!” He laughed, and slapped her hand away. “Your glove could be dirty. You’ll tarnish it.”
“Oh! Yeah. Sorry.” She pushed away from him to a slightly further handhold. “You asked about legs last week, so tonight I was curious about you.”
“Of course, of course…” He’d been in the middle of some task on the hull, and now put away his tools, and turned one eye around to regard his own propulsion. “…There aren’t any creatures on your world that move with thrusters, are there?”
“Nope. Legs to the last.”
“Huh.” He considered that. “Well… Sure, take a look, I guess.” He lifted his silk dress forward, so she could see his thrusters in full.
He had about twenty of them, in 4 clusters. Four were larger booster types, pointed all backwards, and with longer bells to improve efficiency. The others were smaller, more flexible, and were clustered around the bases of the larger. The roots of his 8 tentacles were set in the gaps between clusters, and in front of each cluster was a pair of large bulbous organs. It was a strange, radially symmetric arrangement, that called to mind the designs of jellyfish or a squid, or perhaps even that of a human spacecraft.
The dress (his only clothing besides his tool belt and pack) looked a little strange and silly to her, but it was about the only type of garment that could cover such a shape. It had a hole on the front for his ‘head’ to stick out, sleeves for his tentacles, and was open at the back, so that his thrusters could safely fire.
As for the engines themselves, each one was a fleshy, translucent bell with a shiny liquid film on the inside surface. At the base of the bell, where artificial human rockets had their fuel mixer and combustion chamber, there was some hard structure resembling a snail shell, which, aside from his beak, appeared to be the only bone in his body.
“Does the fuel burn inside these things?” She pointed to one of the shells.
His eyestalk stretched to see where she was pointing. “Yes. Those are the combustion cores.”
“And what are these, are these fuel tanks?” She pointed to the bulbous organs.
“Yes. Oxygen in these ones, hydrogen in those… Or maybe it’s the other way around, I can’t remember. The hearts pump it into the thrusters.” He pointed to a great number of muscular tubes joining each of the fuel bladders with each of its thrusters. “Four hearts for every thruster.”
“Could you show me one firing?”
“Sure.” He gripped his tentacles onto the hull, and ignited one of the smaller thrusters. The fleshy bell inflated to its full shape, the hearts contracted violently, and a tiny spark inside the combustion shell grew into a cloud of dim blue flame that flared up through the bell, and pushed him forward slightly. The hearts throbbed again, and the thruster flashed again, as cyclic and as steady as a heartbeat.
“That’s so cool…” She held out a glove behind the jet, and felt the hot gases thump against her palm.
“Don’t do that!” As soon as he noticed her sticking her hand in, he spun it away from her. The hearts stopped beating and the bell curled up. “You’ll burn yourself!”
“It didn’t feel very hot.” She shrugged. “…I didn’t feel much of anything.”
“Really…?” His eyestalks shifted up and down, which she’d gathered to be equivalent to a frown. “…Those must be pretty thick gloves, then.”
“I guess so…”
“Hmm… Uh… Well. I’d better be getting back to work, then.”
He straightened his dress and turned away.
“Anything I can do to help?”
“You want to help?”
“Sure. I’m sick of being a passenger, I can work. What’re you doing?”
“Just… Inspecting the nets.” He gestured to the woven sheets of silk which were keeping the cargo in place. “If you want to help, feel your way around the edge of that one, and tell me if you see any damage. It will be very small, some fraying around the ends at the junctions where it joins. Use this.” He handed her a marker.
“Got it.”
Twenty minutes later, she finished the inspection, and was happy to report no frays or damage whatsoever.
He made her do it a second time, because there had to be some tears, and besides, the inspection was supposed to take about an hour. She gathered she just wasn’t looking closely enough.
Two hours later she straightened back up, blinked her sore eyes, and replaced the cap on the marker. “Okay, 49 frayed ends!” She reported back. “All marked in red… And there were 32 more that I wasn’t quite sure about, and I marked those a little higher up.”
“Alright, very good job.” He nodded with approval. The lenses of his eyes extended and narrowed as he peered down at one of the ends she’d marked. “Excellent job. Yes, we’ll have to replace this whole net.”
“Couldn’t we repair it?”
“…I guess. But repairing is a lot of time and work. And replacement is easy, and we recycle the silk anyway, so no point in having a hassle.”
“Makes sense.”
“Get around to the other side and hold it tight to keep the cargo from floating off. I’ll start cutting this side. You have a knife?”
“Yep.” She hooked her fingers into a rib in the hull, clambered her way around to the other side, and retrieved her knife from her belt. “Ready when you are.”
Half an hour later, the net had been folded down and stuffed into Keeleeticktick’s pack, and they were unfolding a new one to replace it.
“So.” She spoke up. “What kind of world do your people come from?”
“Hmm?”
“I guess you didn’t come from the surface of a planet, so where did you come from?”
“Oh… Yes…” He paused for a moment, as his mind sifted back through memories of stories and stories of memories. “It was a very large planet.” He related. “Orange and yellow, with storms and clouds of gas always swirling over its surface… I don’t think it had a surface though, I think it was just gas all the way down. But it was surrounded by small moons, and in a great many rings of rock and ice. We lived on the rings.”
“Huh.”
“It orbits that star there.” He pointed toward the heavens off their aft-starboard, and there was no possible way she could have been able to tell which of the points of light he was indicating. “The rings were green and blue, and filled with all manner of life. There were creatures with thrusters, others that drifted, others that lived their whole lives clinging to and burrowing in the rocks… The vapor their thrusters sprayed was absorbed by plants in the shapes of sheets, each one invisibly thin, and the width of a moon. The plants made it back into ice, that they used to shell their eggs and spores and organs, and other creatures fished for the spores again, to use for thrust again, which the plants absorbed again… I heard there was enough vapor floating about the rings that it looked like an atmosphere in places. And so cluttered with rocks and ice and soil and life and things that if you set off in a straight line, you would find something in not more than a night, and sometimes things could even be hidden.”
“Wow.” She hadn’t understood half of the words in his description, but got the gist that it was a complicated, exciting, and varied place. Similar in composition, perhaps, to the rings of Saturn or Uranus, but as different from those lifeless wastes as the Earth was from Mars. “But… You’ve never seen it?” She clarified.
“No… No. That was a long time ago, and only the start. Only the place where we began. We’ve been to so many other places now… That one. That one. That one.” He pointed out other stars, all across the sky. She could never tell which he was pointing to, but he obviously knew their names, could tell their distance, had them mapped in his mind’s eye. “I think I heard that our tribe’s heritage goes back about eight or nine homeworlds. All unique. All of a different feel. All around different stars… All of them abandoned when they got too crowded, or when more violent tribes appeared, or when the life we brought along became too wild and strange. My grandfather’s generation was the one that selected this star.” He pointed ahead of them, toward the brightest star in the sky, whose system they were now entering. “He and his sons spent a lifetime constructing the heavy ion engines needed to move the tribe, and then they set out.” He nodded toward the massive ion thruster glowing on the bow of the tribe’s largest ship, alongside which all the others were being towed by silk. “And it’ll be my generation that finally arrives there, and my son’s that will civilize it… And then maybe his grandchildren will leave it again. Who knows?”
“You were born on the way?”
“Yes.”
“How long do your people live? The length of a life?”
“Hmm… I think by your measure, it would be around 700 years. So, not very long.”
“It sounds like a long time to me.”
“My father said it doesn’t feel very long.”
“…Does it ever get boring?”
“We can sleep for years. We often do.”
“Ah.”
“So yes.” He twisted up his tentacles as a human would fold his arms, and stared out at the distant, intangible starscape. “Yes. It gets boring. It really… Really does. Nothing to do most of the time except… You know. Chart stars, tell stories, try to stay warm, and replace perfectly good nets.”
“Huh.”
“Your world sounds exciting though. Everything close. Everything hidden. Everything dense and different. I bet they had a lot of good stories there.”
“Yeah…” If she recalled correctly, her ship’s database had backed up all its files to the escape pods during the attack. “Yeah, my pod might have a few. I’ll take a look around.”
“That’d be nice.” He agreed. “We could always use more stories.”
“Yeah.” She was about to leave when one more question surfaced in her mind. “Hey wait, your grandad’s generation, did you say they built multiple ion engines? I only see one.”
“Yes, there are many… This isn’t all the tribe. There’s others.” He pointed off into the blackness in a few different directions. “Here. There. All around. We’re all traveling together.”
“Really?” She squinted around, feeling very blind indeed. “I can’t even see any of them.”
“Not all of them are far off. See? There’s the Likokisis family convoy.” He pointed to a bright speck off to port that looked to her like nothing but another star. “HEY! HEY TIFOKOTO LOOK OVER HERE! HEY!” He waved his arms. “TIFOKOTO! I’M TALKING TO YOU! See, he heard me! He’s waving back, see? He’s my best friend.”
His eyeballs were the size of grapefruits and hers the size of grapes, and she couldn’t see anything no matter how she squinted. For something as large as their own convoy to be so faint, it must have been hundreds of miles away at least. And if one additional ‘nearby’ convoy had escaped her notice so completely, how many were there around here? “…How many ships… How many people are in this ‘tribe’?” She asked, and wondered if she’d been mistranslating the word; perhaps what she’d been taking as ‘tribe’ meant something more like ‘nation’ or ‘army’…?
“I…” Keeleeticktick hesitated. “I’m not sure I’m supposed to tell you that.”
“You’re not sure what?”
“Well…! Look Missus Fikes, you’re my friend, but you’re the first alien we’ve ever met. There are many who don’t trust you. Many who don’t want you to know the strength, size, location of our people…”
“You think I’m gonna hurt you guys?”
“No.”
“Man!” She sassed. “If I wanted to hurt you, you’d be hurt! You’ve seen how strong I am! Your cells are just filled with gas, I’m-”
A sniper round pierced a hole in the net, with such infinite precision that it grazed the tip of the finger of her glove but didn’t puncture it. A warning.
“GEEZ! WHAT!” She jerked her hand back with a start.
“CALM DOWN SIKTICKSIS YOU THICK-HEADED WAR-MONGERING IDIOT!” Keeleeticktick yelled in the direction of another invisibly distant convoy. “YOU KNOW FULL WELL THAT HE WAS JUST JOKING, RIGHT?!?” He glanced back at her. Right? He spoke in sign language.
Right. She hurriedly signed back.
Good. He replied. I know. He amended.
They continued to work on the net for the next hour or so, but it was dreadful. An uneasy silence hung over their conversation, and the other nomads besides Keeleeticktick kept their distance from her, and a strange mix of anger and fear and vague, aching sorrow followed after her.
As she lay down in her fragile pod that night, she realized that she’d learned an important lesson: that strength and power and raw capability were no real cause for pride and were no real virtue in the eyes of the universe, for they can be so easily supplanted and surpassed by greater powers, they can so easily lose their power when separated from their element, and there were many greater powers in the universe.
“Missus Fikes.” She whispered to herself, and she spoke in the nomad’s language, for it was becoming her own. “I think you are a very, very long way from home.”
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 “MASS HO!” Came the call.
In her haste to get outside, she accidentally pumped the airlock and buckled her helmet in the wrong order, and was gasping for air a few seconds as she stepped out onto the hull. She managed to find Keeleeticktick amid the ruckus. “What’s up? What happened?”
“Radar picked up an asteroid in our path, closing fast. Deep scanning shows a composition of ice, ore, and carbon.”
“Is it going to hit us?”
“Not literally in our path, I mean it’s close enough to catch!” She could hear in his voice the annoyance at how new she still was to everything. “Ice means fuel, so it’s sure to be worth the maneuver. The ores and other elements are a nice bonus too. But we don’t have much time before we pass. An hour.”
“Uh… Alright then, let’s rock!”
“Rock?”
“I mean let’s go! How do we do this?”
“You want to make yourself useful, you can volunteer.”
“Volunteer for what?”
“ALL RIGHT!” The family elder thrusted up onto the bridge, and raised high a curled tentacle in the air with an excited cry. “WHO’S WANTS TO GO FISHING?”
“I do!” Her hand shot up, along with basically every other tentacle in the crowd.
“READY THE SHIPS!” He waved them all onward and outward. “LINE AND NETS! WINCHES AND FUEL! YOU KNOW THE WAY!”
“What can I do?” She called to Keeleeticktick above the excited shouting of the others.
“You won’t get action following me, I’m a helmsman!” He turned and hurried away. “Stick with Thilykto; He’s done this before!”
The boy rushed past, slapping her helmet as he did. “Let’s rock, Missus Fikes!” It was a phrase he’d learned 15 seconds ago, from her.
“What can I do?” She repeated.
“I don’t know, follow those guys and score us some line! I’m going to get some weights!”
“Some what? Alright!” She followed a group of nomads to an open cargo sphere, pushed and shoved along with them to get a long roll of silken thread, and then kicked off again in the direction she’d seen Thilykto heading. He met her going the other way.
“Where are you going?” He demanded.
“I was following you, where are you going?”
“To the ships!”
The family’s convoy was composed of some 30 vessels, all tied to each other in a loose formation about half a mile across, rotating just enough to keep the structure rigid. The ship at the center contained the main ion engine, and it towed all the rest. Other ships were cargo vessels, their surfaces crowded with packs of equipment and supplies. Some cargo ships carried nothing but ice, others nothing but ore, one had nothing but a single enormous cannister. Some smaller ships were more enclosed, and served as homes for smaller groups. Others were packed with telescopes and imaging equipment, others carried mining augers and refineries and a manufacturing facilities, one was just a straight-up gymnasium, one of them had her own human-made pod tied to the side.
But there was a last type of ship, of which there were five, that she’d never seen used and had never asked about, and it was to these ships that the nomads were now flocking.
They shared the same basic design and layout as all the others; 8 spherical fuel cells, and 8 main engines in 4 clusters, and a crows nest and comm center on top; all tied together by metal lattice, silk, and foil plates of alien wood. But these five ships had no cargo space. Instead, they had a mining talon on the bottom with spikes for gripping into rocks. And between the talon and crows nest, they sported a trio of long cannons. And all around the ships’ circumference, like a pair of semicircular wings, were hung two massive trusses whose purpose she couldn’t guess.
She found Thilykto just underneath the crows nest, bouncing around excitedly and saying something she didn’t make out. Some of the other nomads untied the ship from the convoy, and the hull shuddered beneath her hand as they began to drift away. A group of engineers got the engines primed up, and with a flash, they sparked alive into smooth blue flame.
In her helmet radio, she was overhearing chatter from the helmsmen coordinating. It sounded pretty routine until one of the other ships sounded out. “Aim good, receiving good, powder and ignitor good! Hold onto something and shield your eyes!” And, (catching that last bit a second late) she turned just in time to see its largest cannon fire.
It was an enormous jet of flame and smoke, uncooled and undampened by air, which spiked from the barrel and discharged through every direction of space before the white of the blast faded to red. As she blinked to clear the spot from her eyes, she thought she could see the projectile cresting the tip of the jet, hurtling off into space. Except it wasn’t one projectile, she saw it was many. And each of them was trailing a silk line behind it…
“Missus Fikes, you got that silk, right?” Thilykto was at her elbow. “Got to hurry now, not much time!”
“Yeah, yep!” She pulled it out. “I didn’t know how much we’d need, so I grabbed a whole roll.”
“Perfect! Let’s thread it into one of these winches.” He led the way out onto one of the ship’s wings, where other nomads were busy bolting down motors and spools. He helped her tie the end of her silk into the drum of the nearest one, and they spun the winch backwards to wind it up. When they were done the winch must have had about a mile and a half of silk in it, and the roll in her hands was barely depleted. Now Thilykto cut the silk short, and tied the end around a small metal weight. “There we go. Onto the next one.”
“What are these for?”
“Once we get the ship spinning, the weights will fan them all straight out. Then you’ll see.”
“What’s…? I…? What’s even going on? What was that other ship using its… Its weapons for? What were they shooting at?”
“It was shooting at the Likokisis family.” He pointed off into the blackness.
“WHAT?”
“And the Likokisis family shot at the Waskleskiki family, who shot at us. These are to catch the Waskleskiki’s lines.” He slapped the winch. “And the Likokisis will catch our lines, and the Waskleskikis will catch theirs. We’ll get all three families tied together into a huge triangle. That’s step one.”
“Oh…”
“We’ve gotta hurry though! The Waskleskikis already fired! The lines are on their way!”
“Right! Right…”
They managed to get three winches threaded up before the helmsman sounded the alarm that they were beginning their spin. By that point other people had already gotten the other winches prepped, so all that was left to do was climb back to an enclosed space behind the cannons, and wait and watch.
The ship’s maneuvering engines fired, and it began to rotate. The winches all unlocked and reeled out, and the weights stretched the silk out in every direction, like the spokes of a wheel.
Then, contact! The many projectiles from the Waskleskikis gun sailed past, each trailing a line straight in between their own whirling threads. The two sets wrapped around each other, the weights all swung around and tangled themselves up in knots, and the winches reversed.
The nomads all rushed back onto the wings now, to cut through the sudden tangle and collect the Waskleskikis’ threads. She was right there among them, cutters in hand, trimming and sorting and untangling, and have a great deal of fun at it, even if she wasn’t quite as practiced or precise. Thilykto was among those collecting the scraps and discarded pieces for recycling. Others were unloading the ends of enormous nets, or something like nets, from the ship’s storage locker.
The ship which had fired on the Likokisis was now approaching right off their starboard, and people were flying back and forth between them, exchanging lines, sorting and rearranging and tying and re-tying knots.
A few more minutes of confusion and untangling, and things were starting to make a sort of sense. Some of the Waskleskikis’ threads were tied down securely, others were tied to the ends of their nets, and others were attached into winches. The Waskleskikis seemed to know which these were, and began to reel in the ones on the nets, and give slack to the ones in the winches. They themselves began to reel in certain threads from the Likokisis, and let out certain others. The smaller winches from earlier had been taken down, and the winches that replaced them were quite a bit larger, and spun at enormous speed. Cables in each direction were taken in and let out, the nets followed the ones that went out, thrusters flashed to keep it tight, and before she knew it, the nets all disappeared into the distance.
Half an hour longer, and the winches finally stopped spinning. The silk was all spliced strongly together, and bolted directly to the wings. She helped stow the winches, and then there was nothing to do but wait. Most of the nomads hooked a tentacle or two into the wings, and sat back to relax in exhaustion.
“How long are these lines?” She asked Thilykto. She was feeling less exhausted.
He pointed to the left. “From us to the Likokisis is about… Eighty Tikakikos?” He pointed to the right. “And it’s about seventy to the Wasklekikis.”
“Tikakikos… Which is…?”
“One hundred thousand Tikaki. Which is about this far.” He held his tentacles up to a width of about eight feet.
She did some brief math and some gross rounding in her head, and arrived at a figure of about a thousand miles or so.
A thousand miles.
In the course of less than an hour, the tribe had spun a spider web a thousand miles wide. And they’d used nothing but silk, a few brief bursts of fuel, and three shells of gunpowder.
And she thought that was just plain impressive.
“You did really good. Missus Fikes.”
“Oh yeah? Well you did great too, man! Gimme five!”
He held up a tentacle and slapped it against her glove. It pushed them away from each other and they had to grip the hull again to keep from drifting off.
“Yeah.” He agreed. “You have a lot of energy. Are you even tired?”
“No, not really. This is easy work.”
“Huh.” He laughed. “Once we get further into the system, and start mining and building and fishing in earnest, you could have your own woman in no time.”
“I what?”
“Oh, uh, ha ha, nothing. I mean ship.” He slapped the hull. “Have your own ship in no time. A fishing ship. Like this one.”
“No, you used another word, what was the word you used? I’m still learning this language, you know.”
“Oh, geez. Ha ha. Ugh. It was just a dump joke. Calling a ship a woman. Like you become captain of a ship, it’s like you get a woman. I dunno, ask my dad. And don’t tell him you got it from me.”
“But what does that word mean? I kid you not, I have never heard it. Is it a cuss or what?”
“Did you not have women on your planet?”
“Well I don’t very well know if you don’t give me a hint or something!” She scoffed. “Describe it! I have no clue-”
“I’m not gonna describe a woman! Go ask my dad!”
“Oh come on, kid.” Somebody slapped Thilykto over the head with a teasing laugh. “Stop before you embarrass yourself.”
“I think I’m well past that point by now!” She swatted the tentacle away. “And quit laughing! You describe a woman then, smart guy!”
“Maybe I will!”
“What is the joke?” She was laughing as well now, despite herself. “It is a cuss, isn’t it??”
“Ask my dad! Like I told you!”
“Okay, you little snot.” She waggled a finger at him with a smile. “But I’m signing your name to the question.”
He broke down laughing at his own expense before he could find a retort. She shook her head and took a sip of water from her suit’s bladder.
And ten minutes later, the asteroid hit.
Whatever this silk material was, it was able to stretch a phenomenal distance, especially so over 500 miles of net in every direction, so they in the fishing vessel felt it as less of a shock and more as a gradual sort of pull. A strain gauge they’d clipped to the line began to climb.
“We’re hitting 240 over here.” The family elder read of the gauge. “HOW ABOUT YOU?”
“430.” The Likokisis elder reported.
“510.” Wasklekikis’s elder called.
“It’s getting too dangerous.” He assessed. “Detach yours before it peaks. We’ll wrap it up tight so you can re-catch it when it comes back around.”
“Aye.”
“Aye, but you owe us.”
The other two families severed their lines, and the elasticity of the silk sprung their ends inward, and wrapped them tightly around the asteroid, engulfing it completely in thread. Meanwhile, their target remained tethered to the last remaining ship, and they began to swing around each other in a pair of enormous arcs.
“Hold on to something Missus Fikes.”
“What’s happening?”
“We’re slinging the asteroid around, while the other ships make a new net to slow it down the rest of the way. It’ll put our ship adrift for a little while, but that’s okay. This has to happen sometimes, when we catch more mass than we anticipate, or when the asteroid is denser than it looks.”
“Adri- wait.” She glanced back at the convoy, which they were accelerating away from faster and faster. “WAIT! Oh crap, I can’t live inside this suit for more than a night!”
“Oh no! Missus Fikes, you have to jump!”
“I can’t make it! I don’t have thrusters!”
“You have to jump now! Before we’re too far or too fast!”
“You’ll have to toss me!”
They tossed her.
“But I still don’t have thrusters!”
“Take my squirt gun!”
They tossed her a rocket with a handle on top.
“Oh you have got to be kidding me.” She stared back at them, and saw they were all laughing.
“Don’t worry Missus Fikes, it’s easy to use, just point it and squirt!” They were sailing away from her, faster and faster.
“You’ll be fine! You can get back to the convoy!”
“The gun has eight hundred tikaki per second of delta-v! You can make it back easy!”
“If I die out here, it’s you guys’ fault!”
“No, no, you’ll be fine, Missus Fikes, don’t worry!
“I know you can do it!”
“Oh, go get a woman, you lunatics!” She cussed at them, with still no clue what the word meant. They all burst into the loudest, most contagious laughter she’d ever heard, because they too could tell she didn’t.
It took an hour or so, but she got back to the convoy just fine. It wasn’t too hard.
She was surprised by how comfortable and reassuring the silk net felt beneath her hands when she finally made it. And when she clipped the safety tether on her belt into a truss, she trusted the hull of that alien craft just as intimately as she would’ve trusted the concrete foundation of her own home. Perhaps that’s because it was her home now, and she hadn’t yet realized how much she’d forgotten.
She’d almost made it back to her pod when she heard the call. “Missus Fikes?”
She glanced over her shoulder at the fading dot of the fishing vessel. “What’s up?”
“We finally got the asteroid on telescope and… It’s not an asteroid.”
“…What is it then?”
“It’s a piece of your ship.”
“What… But? My ship was completely aluminum. I… I thought you said… Said… I thought you said the asteroid had ice and carbon…”
“It does.”
“…Oh.” She got it.
“They’re all dead.”
“…Yeah. I know.”
“I’m sorry, Missus Fikes.”
“It’s okay… I know.”
“If I had my way, Missus Fikes.” Came Thilykto’s voice. “You and I would go out together, lure that leviathan in, and kill her. I don’t care how long it takes, we would FIND her and KILL her!”
“My lifespan is too short to spend on monster hunts, Thilykto.” She sighed. “And you shouldn’t be hasty to spend yours either… I’m going to sleep now. I’m tired.”
She closed the door behind her.
The Differences Between Musical Genres
Overview of all songs within the style Digital, Including associated genres. Half heady avant-garde improv, half properly-thought-about Molotov cocktail, all methods disorienting, Throbbing Gristle's debut steamrolled a new path for underground noiseniks by eschewing many of the formal rules of rock music — drums, guitars, melody and, on Aspect B, pulse completely —going instantly for the primal appeal of distortion. "Industrial Music for Industrial Folks" learn the tagline for the band's own Industrial Information, spawning a genre fueled on grinding, mechanical terror and offered influence for everyone from Nine Inch Nails to Aphex Twin. Built on disturbing samples, disturbing digital textures, and disturbing reside recordings, Second Annual Report employed the LP as a medium of moveable transgression. In a yr through which pop music—from Robyn to Ariana Grande—was making a robust assertion, singer Héloïse Letissier, who performs as Christine and the Queens, arrived from France to continue the conversation about gender and identification on Chris. On Doesn't Matter"—over daring poppy '80s drums and glowing synth—Héloïse bravely addresses the pressures of the masculine gaze, suicidal ideas, and the nature of relationships and faith. It's a heavy and essential conversation to be having—especially in a song crammed with as much buoyant French enjoyable as this one. I don't understand how individuals in India have the guts to even name Bollywood a music business. I mean, critically? A expertise-much less bunch saying "Your eyes, your face, our love, our marriage" again and again in each track. And a few random-ass "rapper" who occasionally chips in to "rap", which all the time consists of "Get on the floor, yeah, groove it, yeah, yo, yo, transfer it". 99.9% of the songs are like that. Plus, no production quality at all. Every thing borrowed from different worldwide music. Bollywood is just industrial marketing noise which is bought off as music to a billion individuals with no style and no clue as to what actual music is.
Although he's been useless for over one hundred ten years allready, essentially the most celebrated person from the city of Bergen, nonetheless, is EDVARD GRIEG. As classical music has been canonised for much longer than different musical genres and has earned its place even as an academic topic its unlikely for this artist to fall into obscurity through the many generations from the height of his profession. For many of us, our taste in music is an integral a part of our identification - so much so that, to a sure extent, what we hearken to is who we're. The songs of our youth, heard a thousand instances, fill our headspace with stray lyrics and infectious grooves, creating a filter for the way in which we see, hear, and perceive the world from then on out. And while some have a much less aware, elanateal229.hatenadiary.com more organic strategy, others actively draw boundaries between the music they settle for and the music they deny - and by extension, the people related to these musical cultures, as effectively.
Metallic is a great style of music. It is incredibly numerous, from heavy steel, to hurry and thrash metallic, and even to pirate steel, just like the band Alestorm, and there are even humor steel bands. Metal bands sing about demise, ache, sometimes love, life, peoples personalities, it tells stories, and many different issues. The music itself is diverse. There are songs that begin off slow and http://www.audio-transcoder.com progress to actually quick solos, there are metal songs which are fast all throughout the music, and there are gradual songs. All in all, metal is a great style of music resulting from its great range.
Though each house and techno music were merchandise of city African-American culture, these kinds would get pleasure from a lot of their recognition by the late Eighties within the U.K. and Germany. In the U.K., parties could be held in large open fields out in the countryside. The brand new drug ecstasy turned a popular ingredient to the house and techno events of this era, along with different psychedelic drugs like LSD. These events acquired the title raves and shortly turned famous all through the world for their wild, Dionysian, utopian vibes.
In answering your title question, I agree with the other reply right here (from Tetsujin): genres exist because classification Is What We Do and our brains our wired for using heuristics (see, for example, the writings of Herbert Simon ). That's, labeling something by genre provides a sense of its innate structure and the "rules" by which it performs - or, perhaps extra apparently, the principles it performs round with. (This is why (I personally believe) there is vital argument around whether or not artists fit into sure genres. It seems to be significantly endemic to some steel sub-genres, where there's even a time period for 'trueness to the style': kvlt) Extra merely - or extra individually - the label of genre is among the shortcuts that helps me resolve whether or not or not I may prefer it.
The Art Installation and The Academic Lecture:
Over Easter 2019, I was invited to Lecture at the ISPESCONGRESS 2019 hosted by Alanya Alaaddin Keykubat University.  It was a wonderful experience as the conference was an intimidate gathering of about 40 academics and professors with interests and specialization in Global Sustainability as it applies to Sports, Entertainments, Performing Arts and Culture. There were international speakers as well as national speakers. It was hosted at the Asia Beach Resort and Spa, It was a fantastic Value!
Thank you to all the Professors, Directors and Lecturers that made this Easter Conference in a seaside resort in Turkey informative, laid back and authentic; connecting good hearts and sharp minds. Thank you for inviting me as a Keynote speaker to the Sustainability Culture Salon and Panel.
This is a summary of what my lecture was about:
2019 we will explore the implementation of Global Sustainability in the Context of Silk Roads 3 showing :
That beyond the concepts by UNFCC, ICH was instrumental in the Trade routes and Cultural Renaissance in human history, before any western academics defined it on a United Nations level.
Artists & Athletes are the Creators of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) and historically they co-created the ideals of Silk Road 2. ICH transcends concepts of Nation State.
How the role of sports and arts can bring a universality that a cure to the rise of Far Right Neo Nazism that HINDERS the growth of Silk Road 3 Trade Routes.
Art (c) Kel1st.com & CeciliaYu.com , Photo (c) CeciliaYu.com 2019
The talk is part of an Arts Salon featuring a Light & Art Installation titled: “Kel1st & Yu : Preliminary Sketches for Silk Road 3 ”.  The evolution of ICH in our East-West art experiment heralds the challenges of Silk Road 3. Kel1st & Yu is in its 6th years of development where the 6000 years old Chinese Calligraphic Art is “challenged” to consider New World Graffiti Art which is only 50 yrs old. ICH and Silk Road 3 can be explored as a microcosm via Artistic; co-creating a Visionary Global history Beyond Borders as ONE Human Race via Culture, Science and Trade.
The Location in Alanya, Turkey: I feel humbled to see the relics of past empires from Cleopatra’s (the real one) summer holiday spot to Caesar’s Roman Temple, Ottoman Empire Battle Forts to Ataturk’s legacy…the place itself is an educational venue full of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH). Empires rise and fall, human cultural connections are eternal. Alanya and Antalya is a place of great beauty and have so much Intangible Cultural Heritage that it was very hard to see everything in only a few days. I was honored that I was given a private session to view the Ottoman Calligraphy at the small blue Mosque by the sea. It is wonderful to see Calligraphic Art in their original settings, just as the creator intended it when he or she first designed the composition!
  The Sightseeing: I Really Loved the diversity of experience in #Turkey! In one day, I breakfasted at a Sultan style Chocolatier with some amazing recipes, shopped in markets, sat on the beach watching a Volleyball game, then went to a local restaurant celebrating #Ataturk ‘s Children Day, then arranged a private view of some #ottomanempire #ottomanart calligraphy at the gorgeous little blue mosque. They were so kind to give me a dolphin Sarong to cover my hair as I forgot my scarf and turned on the crystal chandelier for me so I can take photos, then out to the Vegas style hotel strip for dinner, drinks, cocktails and late night shopping!!! I liked that the secular and the spiritual coexist here. Best of #ancient and #modern #privatebeachlife
  Sunset at the private beach and pier was truly mesmerizing as I saw a young man, in silhouette, practiced his martial arts as the sun set on the hilltop castle and I took a moment to remember the rise of the Ottoman, and the fall of the Byzantine empire…..
The Private Beach Resort & Spa: As for the Gorgeous Asia Beach Resort & Spa Hotel: Special Thank you to all the Resort Technicians who hooked up my Art Light Installation till 2am!!!! Thank you for your diligence.  The staff, management and the technicians were brilliant. Everything was brilliant and attentive! The Buffet was just amazing and it took me the first 2 meals to realize that apart from the Huge Buffet, I also had to try the fresh grill, the fresh bakery and the fresh omelette breakfast bar!
It was very hard to try everything because as soon as one thing finished, another part of the hotel is set up for more snack bars, food, drinks galore. We found the late night open restaurant where you can do a light soup, salads and a little bit of a hot meal useful as often after the conference was done, a few of us still had informal meetings.
So overall, thank you so much for making my stay and the conference a great success. Thank you for the wonderful staff at reception. The night manager and also all the technicians that stayed up till 2 am hooking up my art installation. Then had to get back by 7 am to do the IT for other conference keynote speakers!
It was an amazing location. Thank you to cleaning staff for making sure my minibar with free drinks and mineral water are always topped up.
I went to the spa on the very last day. They were so diligent in trying to give me the quality of massage and Turkish bath experience in spite of some language problem. I want to thank all of them. Being turned into a Human Cappucino with a Turkish Hammam coffee exfoliation rub and then a frothy Foam Bubble Bath on the luxurious and beautifully decorated Marbles inside the Hamman  was very interesting!  I also enjoyed the salt room to improve my breathing, organic face mask,  head massage and the body massage afterwards. I was so tired, I fell asleep during my massage and woke up to fresh fruits and tea served in the relaxation area!
Similarly thank you to all at the hotel, bar, waiters at the large dining room, servers of drinks, cocktails mixologists etc …for treating us with Warmth and Graciousness understanding a Professional conference have different needs to a tourist vacation.
Thank you for showing us great hospitality and providing a good environment for Intellectual endeavors while all those on holiday were clearly enjoying their time too.
The Great Connection and Friendships built: All attendees and Keynote speakers spent time at the Gala dinner and also exchanging global ideas about sports, culture and sustainability after dinner, where we met for drinks, coffee and tea. We had a lot of fun as well like on the very last evening when we were all so tired, the sudden appearance of a White Elephant made up of Towels, made us all convulse into controllable laughter! It was one of those spontaneous moments of Joy and camaraderie! The white towel elephant will forever be the official mascot and injoke for Ispecongress 2019 by the seaside Resort! 🙂  Again, without the wonderful staff at the hotel, who made THAT WHITE elephant, we would have that brilliant bonding experience!
The Art contradictions with Kel1st, in between times: My decision to create a little fusion piece that accidentally became to official poster and central image for the entire Ispescongress had its usual art bicker with Randy Rodriguez, the artist for Kel1st. We disagreed on a number of things artistically but was pleasantly surprised by how well our “contradiction” worked together in the central image where half of his image done on textured paper contrasted with the wafer thin Chinese Calligraphy Art paper made from Rice and Skin that I favor when I am experimenting with Chinese calligraphy. When lights were shone through the materials both the texture of the darker hue and the rice paper, came out like a Ying & Yang contrast. It was interesting and completely unintended. While Kel1st is not into deviating from traditional wild style, I believe it was a pleasant surprise for him artistically. In the same way, I discovered that Ottoman Calligraphy had sword like strokes which had some resonance in the Wild style calligraphy’s use of arrows; a certain kind of call for protection. However I feel that before we explore this further, Wild style needs to get a better understanding as an art tradition for why there emerged a tendency to go towards what I joking described as “Holy excessive Arrows”! Sometimes less is more…like the ubiquitous style of Ottoman Calligraphy that “rounds” up the sword-like strokes in order to emphasize that Sacred Calligraphy are used primarily for the celebration of Divine peace. I think there are food for thoughts there for Kel1st’s Artist in order to contain his temperate least he ends up saying things about other people’s cultural traditions that are, in the heat of the moment rude, while in reality he is extremely diligent in learning about other’s calligraphic tradition in order to become a better Wild Style Master. I am not going to pretend that Kel1st did not see a healthy dose of the Cecilia’s famous temper. Even poor Professor Sebahattin got a good telling off when he tried to adjust a small piece in my art installation, imagining he was just  helping to straighten it at 1am in the morning! 🙂
“Wow, Art Fascism!” said Professor S.
Me: “The only acceptable form of fascism is in the art world!”
We laughed! But unfortunately it is true… All artist are deep down, ART FASCIST! We might as well learn to laugh at ourselves! At least we created wonderful Art & educational Lecture events towards the UN Global Sustainable Development and Education Goals, so all is well in our world!
  My Easter Art Installation and Lecture at ISPESCONGRESS 2019 at #PrivateBeachLife! Thanks Turkey! The Art Installation and The Academic Lecture: Over Easter 2019, I was invited to Lecture at the ISPESCONGRESS 2019 hosted by Alanya Alaaddin Keykubat University.
Undo my ESC - semi-final 2
Hey there, folks. Last week, I published the first part of “Undo my ESC”, a look at semi-final 1 where I took the entrants and made óne change, either minor or drastic, to make the competition better in my eyes. I didn’t need to take out my time-travelling tippex too much for the generally stellar first semi-final, but semi-final 2 is a different kettle of fish altogether. There are a few songs I don’t want to change at all but must, but a lot of songs could do with changing. As always, this is just mý take on things and written light-heartedly. (Some people always unfollow the few times I publish entries relating to my opinion - to those folks, I say, skip the read.)
Norway – We could scarcely get off to a worse start for my tastes, as this unwelcome return is a composite of so many elements that make me cringe – the music, which sounds like a jingle for a new version of Supermarket Sweep; the painfully ironic title “That’s how you write a song”; the lyrics which are nigh beyond parody for their triteness; the cheesier-than-feta visuals and choreögraphy. Nothing really lit up my world in this year’s MGP, but I would have preferred the runner-up, the new Wallmann song or even (for the sake of a guaranteed belly laugh in the final) Scandilove over this abomination.
Romania – From a song being hotly tipped to one, in the death spot, which many people assume will lead to the end of Romania’s qualification streak. Personally, I increasingly enjoy this unloved song quite a lot. It has a personal poignancy and resonance with me, reminding me of conversations with friends lost to suicide or prolonged self-destruction, trying to reach out and help them see the beautiful things in this world. There’s not much I’d change – but since Voltaj were able to do well with a bilingual version, inserting some Romanian would be my little alteration.
Serbia – I was so excited to see the return of Beovizija, and it didn’t disappoint, with a very varied show including wild dances, poignant ballads and the funkiest jazz-rap I’ve heard since Digable Planets, and áll in Serbian. As is often my jinx, most of my support went to the eventual runner up, Pesma za tebe, a gorgeous bit of Balkan blues which I prefer a lot more than the Zajdi zajdi ripoff colliding with a dance mix that ended up besting it. I would send the flawless Saška Janks instead.
San Marino – Trust San Marino to veer into the world of national finals for a bit of credibility, only to make the selection process as risible as possible. I see some value in Who we are, because the combination of its rip-off of Heroes’ chorus, the robots, the dramatic with a capital D hand gestures and the rap make me laugh hysterically. But there were far better songs – Out of the twilight being very reasonably the fans’ favourite, but a bit by the numbers for me. I actually would give the nod to IROL. People say that San Marino doesn’t have enough performers to be competitive but 8 Sammarinese artists signed up to 1in360 and they eliminated all but him. Rap turns off a lot of Eurofans almost automatically, but it would have been heart-warming for a local artist to win such a mercenary NF system.
Denmark – I suppose, if for nothing else, Denmark deserve some props for consistency. How can a country that brought us such mould-busting entries as Disco-Tango, Fra Mols til Skagen and Dansevise be so consistently bland for several years? I don’t dislike Higher Ground, but it feels like an empty attempt to create a tune for a soundtrack for a hokey straight-to-video movie. I’d improve it by translating it into Old Norse.
Russia – On the one hand, I’m glad Russia stuck to their promise to Julia to bring her back for 2018. On the other hand, I disliked Flame is burning, and hate I won’t break even more (except for the hilarious “becoming a mountain” scene at the end of the music video) and so, if I had the liberty, would go back to 2017 and avoid the provocative gambit that led to her having been selected. If not, I would simply give her a song to sing in Russian as she seems rather more confident with her mother tongue.
Moldova – My word, talk about picking one of the worst songs out of a generally terrible selection. Moldova’s song this year is an infernal throwback to the darkest days of the contest. Its dirty trumpet riff pulsates like a bad headache as the most awkward ménage-à-trois partners this side of the Volga plough their way through some bizarre lyrics. I don’t want to subject myself to listening to the Melodie pentru Europa finalists again, but I’m sure I remember there being something better…
Netherlands – It says something about both this year and the artistry of Waylon that even one of my lesser favoured tracks amongst those he presented for consideration is amongst my top anyway. I’ve come to love Outlaw in ‘em as one of the few upbeat tracks that make me want to dance rather than make me deeply irritated, and I love the lyrical message of everyone finding the strength to be their own person and stand up for themselves. However, I lóve the melancholy and yet equally rousing Thanks but no thanks even more and would have picked it for ESC.
Australia – Four years after their supposedly one-off participation in the contest, and a year after they were sent into the final by the juries despite rightfully getting slated by the public vote, Australia are still here, somehow. There was word of them organising a national final, which could indeed have been an interesting show. Instead, they’ve gone with something so bland that it is nigh offensive, crowned by lyrics that are merely a string of platitudes. When Australia have such a rich musical scene, it’s a crying shame to send something so generic.
Georgia – I’m delighted that Georgia is sending its first song fully in their language, thus overshadowing the couple of lines in Georgian at the start of the hideous I’m a joker several years ago. It’s very authentic and showcases both beautiful vocals and great musicianship. My one worry is that it may seem a bit one-note to some people and fail to qualify – I might try to make a bit more contrast between the verses and chorus.
Poland – A cut-price Alexander Wallman with his cringey uncle behind him throwing shapes whilst pretending to mix, to the musical backdrop that sounds like a knockout coke advert jingle. Not really a recipe for success in my eyes, but somehow this won the Polish national contest. This is background music at best, like much of the songs in Krajowe Eliminacje this year. The only one that didn’t just bleed into those surrounding it for me was Ifi Ude’s Love is stronger; not typically my cup of tea, but a very striking composition and, in my eyes, the most likely of the entire selection to stand out.
Malta – Whilst Denmark provide a heady dose of beigeness from the north, Malta compete with them in the generic national selections stakes from the south. And how can a country where English is spoken natively alongside Maltese consistently come to the contest with criminally, almost laughably bad lyrics, like that of the winner, Taboo? I’d pick Song for dad over it – at least its lyrics were simple but earnest.
Hungary – I’ve come to really enjoy Viszlát nyár, the raw and emotional lyrics and performance and the big personalities of the lads in AWS, especially Aron and Soma trolling Wiwibloggs a few days ago! I do think there were potentially better picks, though – notably Azt mondtad and, for something also on the heavier side, Nem szól harang.
Latvia – This is a hard one. I really do love the sultry yet pensive Funny Girl and can see why Latvia were wowed by Laura’s convincing performance. It is one of my favourites this year – but I must admit to loving Madara’s Esamība even more for its delightfully ethereal feeling that never fails to send shivers down my spine.
Sweden – It’s long become a tradition for me to see a song or songs in Melodifestivalen that I wóúld have considered in my top 10 had it won, but instead it loses to something completely odious for me. Even in this pretty poor year, there were a few songs I think were a lot more interesting, like Dotter’s “Cry”, the woefully undervalued veteran Kikki’s “Osby Tennessee”, but I think my change would be for the runner up to take the winner’s place. Felix Sandman’s poignant Every single day has outperformed the ungodly Bieber-Timberlake hybrid that spawned Dance you off in the Swedish music charts, and I truly do thing it was a case of the better song being bested by the flashier show.
Montenegro – Inje was by far the best of Crna Gora’s short but sweet national selection, and I am over the moon that the country is returning to what has best served it at Eurovision and bringing back the Balkan ballad style that recent years have been sadly bereft of. There is really little I would change, but I’d want to ensure an eye-catching presentation that brings the story of the song to life as well as the music video did.
Slovenia – My initial reaction to Slovenia’s song was “hvala ne” (no thanks.) I found it really obnoxious on first (and second, third, etc) listen – I am really no fan of songs that have no real chorus. Over time, I’ve come to enjoy it as something rather different to the field, but I still would send the stirring V nebo instead.
Ukraine – I know Mélovin has many fans, but his song does little for me. It’s a low-key attempt at an anthemic song that doesn’t really get off the ground for me. That is not helped by the fact that you can (and we have!) asked a few dozen people to listen to it and because of his alien pronunciation, get a few dozen different “interpretations” of the original Mélovinese lyrics. The funky, soulful, playful, melancholy and yet still upbeat Lelja getting pipped to the selection was one of the biggest robberies of the entire year for me!
And the automatic qualifiers in this round:
France – I really do like “Mercy”. Great storytelling, musically very well produced and “Madame” has a lovely voice. The quality of France’s return to national finals, though, was such that it was not my favourite. I think the even more French flavoured efforts that were the heartbreaking, spellbinding, classic Tu me manques and Lisboa, Jerusalem were even better picks. I also loved the almost psychedelic feel of Ciao. Keep this standard up next year, mes amis !
Germany – Well done to Germany for jettisoning the absolutely torturous national final procedure they had last year, where they eliminated two people off the basis off completely unrelated covers and then we heard the same two songs performed over and over again for the rest of the night by 3 people. However, there was not a great leap in terms of quality to match. I preferred “You and I”, but Michael Schulte’s was probably the best song on the night. I fear could be easily forgettable amongst 25 other songs. My change would be to try to make the choruses a little more dynamic.
Italy – Italy hardly ever put a foot out of step at this contest, and that’s in part thanks to the grand tradition that is San Remo, which has even more prestige than ESC itself in the country. There were dozens of great songs in San Remo, but Non mi avete fatto niente, an effecting song with a very strong message, was one of the best for me. My only worry is that the frenetic, breathless pace seems to alienate some listeners – if I had to make a change (as is the premise with this conceit), I may cut one or two repetitions of the chorus and slow down the thunderous, impactful but perhaps sometimes alienating delivery of words just a tad. So those were my thoughts on how I’d change this year’s ESC if I had to make one change. I’m intrigued at what other folks would come up with in this scenario, too!
Impaired Judgment
a summer fic for the Olicity Hiatus Fic-A-Thon
wrote this in the summer can read at A03
Summary:
John Diggle is out of it by an aphrodisiac truth drug and its awkward field mission. He tells Felicity how he appreciated her and then it leads to how he thinks she is very beautiful and sexy and how he tried to control himself in the beginning before Oliver got a clue and they were just friends. When Oliver shows up Diggle needs his help too. John has no clue what was said. Oliver and Felicity promise to never tell him.
Notes:I just love John Diggle and I don't find enough Dig centric fics.
prompt: Impaired Judgment
Tumblr media
“Overwatch, I’m going to need you to help me with Spartan.” Green Arrow calls out as he leaves the exit door with his partner half on him stagger walking. She places the really uncomfortable mask on her face and runs towards where Oliver is holding Dig up and takes over draping her arm around the man on the other side and helps Oliver get him to safety in the van.
“Need to finish checking the perimeter; will you be okay with John here?”
“Sure. Do you know what chemical he walked into?”
“No.”
“I’ll draw blood and start analyzing.”
“Okay. Keep an eye out, if you see anything. Get out of here.”
She nods. Oliver gives a quick look to John before he hurries back in to finish his sweep.
--->
Other than a few moans and John having a moment of opening and shutting his visor over and over while giving Felicity odd smiles that somewhat look even more bizarre coming from him.
“I like my new helmet; I should have listened to you from the beginning when you said it needed loads of improvement.”
She made a noise of agreement as she helps take one sleeve off his jacket to roll his shirt up his arm. Placing a stretchy band around his bicep so she could draw blood he is observing at her every move.
“I don’t wanna act like Oliver and not be a good listener.”
“I don’t think anyone can beat Oliver.” She hears a snicker on the communicator and pays no mind to it as she draws blood.
“Good, he’s really thick headed, took him like ever to suck it up and go after one of the best girls I’ve ever known.”
“Awe thanks, I think you’re awesome too.”
“And sexy.”
“Um sure, I think you’re very handsome.”
“Sexy, super smart like really out of this world smartest genius and a loud voice that does wonders.”
“You aren’t talking about yourself at all.”
“No I’m talking about you silly. You are a diamond, did you know that?”
“A mineral?”
“A unique mineral, did you know diamonds exhibits great fire and brilliance just like you.”
“Oh really?”
“Yep, Oliver told me that. Well he went on and on. Diamond is like a 10 on the moth no, no, moors um no …”
“The Mohs scale.”
“Sure whatever, see how you just corrected me like that it so…”
“Educational?” She heard Oliver make a ‘psst’ sound.
“Sexy. Smart ladies are stimulating.”
She just moved to look at the video feed to make sure Oliver wasn’t in any danger while keeping a very vocal John Diggle company.
“Do you know something?”
She looks at John waiting for a reply.
When he just had his head cocked to the side she finally asked, “Do I know what?”
“I threw you way over the friend zone long, long, long, long…” He stops like he’s thinking a bit. “Long time ago threw you to the sibling sector.”
“Oh.”
“Yep. You became a little smarty-pants sister.”
“Okay.”
<---
They get interrupted a by the Green Arrow as he asks a mission question, “Overwatch is there any movement on the second level?”
“No. There nothing going on under you but movement on the stairwell 800 feet to your left. Plenty of movement happening on the third and fourth floors.”
“Got it. I’m sending in those little gizmos to check for chemical comprehensions to load later at the lair.”
“Be careful.”
“Always.”
--->
John Diggle was snickering throughout their whole exchange.
“You two are wild bunnies.”
“What?”
“Yep, like catching you two butt naked last week.”
“Oh my God.” Felicity squeals out.
“Oh shit.” She hears Oliver say.
“I so saw you naked once.” He snickered out with a laugh. “Before it became a recurring theme.”
“What do you mean you saw her naked?”
“Oliver, he can’t hear you.”
“You talking to Oliver?” she nods. He continues after shrugging. “I wasn’t supposing too but I did. I was paralyzed with fear you’d see me. But I was there. I was supposed to keep an eye on you.” He laughs. “I sure got a nice eyeful too.”
“I really don’t want to hear this.” Oliver mumbles.
“Oliver was just being a dick. Ha! A dick, I’ve seen his dick too.” He retorts looking amusingly at Felicity’s wide eyes. “His I may have seen a tad more than your blush rosy behind and perky breasts with button nipples that I bet he enjoys palming now. I know I would if I was him.” He looked like he was sobering up but asked, “Do you know I love you guys and both of you love me right?”
“Of course, I love you.”
“Does Oliver?”
“Of course. You two are brothers.”
“Yea. Love that bone head.” He has a faraway look as he shocks her yet again, “I knew you’d been a queen since the day you put him in his place that boy was going to be a goner.”
Felicity took a cloth from the first aid kid and wiped sweat from John’s forehead. He was also slightly heating up so she shoved a thermometer into his mouth.
<---
“Oh really.” She continued as when she took the stick from John’s mouth after the allotted time and saw he had a slight elevation. “Oliver John temperature rose just a tad.”
“At least we know he is breathing fine. Be careful Felicity with his impaired judgment he could become a threat. But keep him talking if he starts to sound off I’ll head back sooner he’ll need medical attention.”
“Alright, you’re doing great being stealthy in there. Did you find any TI points?”
“I’ve found three so far. Whatever they are mixing here it’s big.”
“Well once we have knowledge you can come back with the team.”
--->
Diggle had his eyes on her lap as she was talking to Oliver and when her attention was back on John. He chirped out, “So nothing in the oven yet?”
“What?”
“No baby Queen? I’m ready for a baby Queen, ask your hubby when he’s going to hurry up and knock you up.”
“Wow, maybe I’m not ready there so much on our hands…”
“Excuses, excuses. You two are so full of it.”
“Wow John, I didn’t think you felt this way.”
“Felicity if you really knew how I felt you’d wouldn’t talk to me again.”
“How do…”
“Felicity don’t you dare.” Oliver said quickly.
“Ah, happy you asked.”
A groan on the communicator told Felicity that Oliver so was not pleased.
<---
After listening for fifteen minutes on how to have intercourse and all the body parts needed and why John was content that he spoke his sexual piece. Felicity moaned in displeasure. Between hearing Oliver fighting some men and Diggle recipes on baby making Felicity was horrified enough for a lifetime.
“Now I’ve been strident with Oliver in this matter but I’m so glad we talked about this.”
Oliver spoke up, “Heading back now. ETA three minutes.”
“Got it. John lets buckle you in.”
“My pants are too tight.” He started to unbutton his pants.
“John please stop, oh god your unzippering.”
“What the hell is going on?” she hears Oliver huffing as he is heading their way.
“John is…”
“I need to be free.” He says as he moves his hand into his boxers.
“Oh God I can’t watch.” Felicity turns away but she can hear a satisfied moan from John as he finally is freed from his tormenting confinement.
--->
The back door of the van opens and Oliver groans.
“Felicity drive us a few miles up then I need to help Diggle get some relief.”
“What do you mean help John with relief.” She says as she pulls away and drives until Oliver tells her to stop. Both men get out and she can’t see them nor hear them. Not until the communicator is back online.
“We are heading back just drive us to the lair.”
“Fine.”
Once at the lair Diggle falls asleep. He vitals all stable so Felicity is running the chemical composition as  Oliver stands near John.
“John is going to be so mortified.” Felicity quips looking at the sleeping form.
“That is if he remembers.”
Oliver and Felicity quite don’t know what to say and promise to never tell him like ever. They come to find that John Diggle has no idea what happened after the gas hit him. They wait for Lyla to come pick him up.
Aidan Baker & Claire Brentnall — Delirious Things (Gizeh/Pleasence)
youtube
Here Baker (Nadja, Caudal, WERL, several more) and Brentnall (Shield Patterns) team up in an homage to/exploration of various aspects of the dreampop/shoegaze/synth pop sound, specifically where those genres start blending together. Baker has mostly traded in his guitar for a vintage Casio but runs it through his customary array of pedals, leading to an intriguingly hybrid, sometimes droning sound. Brentnall often sounds like she’s attempting to find some ideal synthesis of Elizabeth Fraser and Kate Bush in her singing, which is just about perfect for these songs (five on this album, along with three instrumental interludes). At their best, like the gossamer “Wingless”, the stiff, formal beat and echoing waves of the open title track, and the coldly fuzzy “Shivering”, Baker and Brentnall create songs that can stand confidently alongside their influences, with a particularly compelling chill of their own. Not all of Delirious Things reach those heights, but the other tracks here are still pleasurable examples of the form.
 Billington/Shippy/Wyche — Billington/Shippy/Wyche (Astral Spirits)
Billington / Shippy / Wyche by Billington / Shippy / Wyche
Some years back, The Ex got off a plane at O’Hare Airport, headed on down to the Empty Bottle, and surprised the attendees of a jazz festival that prominently featured members of the ICP Orchestra by hopping straight on stage unannounced and blazing through a loud, wild and did I say loud set with Han Bennink. It split the audience between rock heads who loved the brutality of the blast and certain jazz fans who covered their ears (not without cause, because that shit was LOUD) and muttered afterwards about the fascism of volume. Nowadays we have some real fascism to worry about, but Ben Billington (Tiger Hatchery, Quicksails, Ono), Mark Shippy (U.S. Maple, Miracle Condition), and Daniel Wyche (crucial Chicago show organizer and solo musician) are keeping the blammo improv flag flying high in a stiff breeze which issues from the two guitarists’ large, loud amplifiers and Billington’s gale force drums. This is wall of sound stuff, but the more you face the wall, the more you find differentiation in its blasted surfaces. Flip the tape over and you’ll hear that the trio’s not all about loudness, though. They can also leave plenty of space between the alien sounds and move them with the intuitive agility of old river pilots who navigate the currents by vibration and feel.
 Gunther’s Grass — Bastille Day & Other Lullabies (Titacacaman Records)
Bastille Day & Other Lullabies by Gunther's Grass
Four years after their 2013 debut, Gunther’s Grass is back with another set of hardy improvised drones. Built on the novel confluence of acoustic bass, hurdy gurdy and the Southeast Asian free-reed instruments khaen and pii jum, the West Coast trio’s music is slow, dark and overwhelmingly thick with timbral friction. While the ostensible project of Bastille Day & Other Lullabies is to explore “imaginary dreamscapes of lost cities, ancient battles and remote frontiers,” as usual the dream probably says less about its contents than it does about its dreamer. The trio does well, anyway, to resist appropriating global genres or programming narratives, producing instead six examples of its own unique blend of Eastern and Western influences. Whereas it’s not surprising to find drone pieces stretching whole album sides or more, the brevity of the tracks on Bastille Day (six minutes on average) serves to highlight the contrasts between pieces — and in doing so undermines some of their subtlety, along, most likely, with a bit of their power. Still, I’m not sure where else to find music with quite so tactile a layering of the keening, the grating and the groaning. My guess is that it only exists here, wherever that is.
 Philip Jeck — Iklectik (Touch Music)
Iklectik by Philip Jeck
Live performances by British sound artist Philip Jeck actually manage the impressive feat of being even more immersive than his studio albums. Maybe it’s the immediacy of hearing the sounds, created using faded and damaged vinyl records, synths and other instruments, as they come to life in front of you, conjured by an unassuming man who stares down at his devices, avoiding the eye. Maybe the unpredictability of using such a fragile tool as old vinyl adds a certain tension. Whatever the case, Iklectik, recorded at the London venue of the same name, is a welcome addition to Touch’s new series of live recordings. Evolving over 45 minutes, the solitary piece that makes up Iklectik develops gradually, from a blissful opening sequence of wobbly drones and warm bass through more unsettling tonal surges not that dissimilar to something you might hear on an industrial record and an all-consuming wall of synth bliss to a crackling final section driven by muted beats that fades into silence. At times, the audience can be heard rustling and crackling, adding to the intimacy of the recording. Where Jeck prefers to divide his studio albums up like suites, the single track flows more organically, following the emotional whims of its creator. Jeck is often compared to the hauntology scene, but in truth his music, especially live, is more introverted and contemplative, making Iklectik a sort of avant-garde sonic poem.
 Niko Karlsson — Valosta valoon (Feeding Tube)
Tumblr media
Coming out of the loose network of ensembles that comprise the so-called Finnish underground, Niko Karlsson makes his solo debut LP for Byron Coley’s label. The eight racks here feature multi-tracked layers of bowed and picked string instruments, voice, harmonica and other miscellany. Karlsson stakes out a not-unpleasant  territory at the confluence of various streams of modern psychedelia, from the loner psych of Dark Noontide-era Six Organs and the DIY ethos of Finland’s underground strains to the nocturnal explorations of Timo van Lujik’s various outsider projects. Throughout, he’s adept at crafting delicate, well-balanced arrangements: see the distorted guitar and droning bowed strings under the hypnotic acoustic guitar patterns on “Unen Oma,” or the hushed blending of voice, string drones and chiming on “Varjon Kantamana.” But Karlsson’s dedication to balance might be what holds this album back. Valosta valoon is entrancing when he hones in a single texture, such as the nest of interlocking, minimal string patterns, almost aleatoric, on “Linnoitus” or the ethereal choruses he conjures on “Surujen joki” and “Harhailijani.” Elsewhere, he wants to suggest an air of mystery but the transparency of his process and the often conventional treatment of his material means he ends up falling short and settling for something more prosaic.
  Felix Kubin — Takt der Arbeit (Editions Mego)
vimeo
Conceived as a soundtrack to a series of 1960s educational videos about industry and work, Takt der Arbeit heavily wears its concept on its sleeve in the the artwork depicts an industrial machine.  Martial drum machine and acoustic beats clatter throughout opener “Musik für neue Büromaschinen”. But Felix Kubin’s sense of whimsy and fun also pierce through the intellectual rigor of the exercise.  Although “Musik für neue Büromaschinen” feels like it’s meant to represent the sound of heavy machinery, it’s actually throughout  tied to the more mundane office work that dominates the lives of so many in Western societies: mobile phones chime, a printer reels off paper, a dial-up tone rings out. Kubin cleverly takes the original concept of soundt-racking images of past work and aligns it into the present, drawing an intriguing parallel between grinding industry and the constant pressures of commute-work-sleep-repeat. “Musik für neue Büromaschinen” has an aggressive, relentless humor behind it, as do the ever-shifting, percussive musings on the digital age that are “Martial Arts” and “Uhren” (splendid use of vibes and xylophone). In between, “Geburt eines Schiffes” is a grinding industrial epic, a caustic exploration of how the capitalist system hammers into the ordinary people that get absorbed into its machinery just as much as it did to miners and factory workers of yesteryear.
 Magda Mayas/Jim Denley — Tempe Jetz (Relative Pitch)
 Tempe Jetz approaches time from several angles. It’s a document of one brief one-off encounter between Magda Mayas, a keyboard player based in Berlin, and Jim Denley, a woodwinds player based in Sydney. The track titles — “A Departure,” “Customs Declaration,” “In Transit” and “Arrival” — relate a passage that is clearly bounded but of sadly unpredictable length. The circumstances — a three-hour recording session in a moldering, shutdown sports club — sound like something that you would put behind you. But it is dedicated to the first Australians who sustained a way of life for tens of thousands of years before the ungentle hand of British colonization swept it away. The music, performed on alto sax, bass flute and a clavinet in less than perfect repair, was made in the moment, but the decaying materials at hand likely influence the antiquity of the sounds, which feel like they have been blowing around the Australian continent since before the first sailing ships punctured the horizon. Breaths wax, whistle and wane while mechanical parts thump, pop, and plink, and elements interact with nonverbal fluency. Ideally instant composition yields sounds that can be revisited and considered at length, and that’s certainly the case here.
 Mdou Moctar — Sousoume Tamachek (Sahel Sounds)
Sousoume Tamachek by Mdou Moctar
Mdou Moctar got his start nearly a decade ago waxing futuristic. While his first record received no official release in his native Niger, the sounds of his maximally auto-tuned voice and bouncy programmed beats were shared across the desert from phone to phone, and first made their leap out of the desert via Sahel Sounds’ Music For Saharan Cell Phones. But Moctar’s no one-trick pony. Subsequent albums and his performances on his recent US tour confirm that he’s a blazing guitarist who can hold his own against anyone on the Guitars From Agadez scene that Sublime Frequencies put out a few years back, and he played the Prince character in the first Tamachek (that’s what the Tuareg call their language and themselves) language film ever made — Akounak Tedalat TahaTazouhai, a desert remake of Purple Rain. Like Prince or David Bowie, he’s been a shrewd assessor of trends and opportunities. His computer music rode a new trend to places no one else making it could imagine, and his higher-octane guitar music fits right into the recent louder-faster rules of desert blues. Sousoume Tamachek embodies another artistic phenomenon. While Moctar recorded it thousands of miles from home in a Portland OR studio, it’s the most tradition-steeped thing he’s done. He picks electric and (mostly) acoustic guitars, plays hand percussion and sings songs he sang before he first dumped his voice into a hard drive. The result sounds reflective, although you won’t know for sure if you don’t know Tamachek. But you won’t need words to appreciate his loping grooves, lilting lines, yearning voice or the sense of commune with something vast and quiet that they evoke. Freed of the need to either blare or pixilate, he’s a calm and comforting troubadour.
Bill Meyer
  Schnellertollermeier – Rights (Cuneiform)
With their 2015 debut album X, Schnellertollermeier blended jazz, prog and metal. Those touchpoints remain for follow-up Rights, but the trio builds from a new center now. They give their sound, for the most part, more bright spots, though Manuel Troller's guitar still can reach some dark places. But the real change comes with the shift in focus to more minimalist composition. These four songs build around shifts in repetition. The prog isn't gone by any stretch, but if you look to the core of the songwriting, you'll find more Philip Glass than King Crimson.
The group holds to this approach, but they don't restrict themselves with it. The title track eventually chases the metal, and the dynamic sensibility might fit more into even a post-rock mode. The album builds throughout until the near chaos of “Round,” making the album feel, if not like a single suite, much like a set of related pieces. It's a strong accomplishment given the musician's unwillingness to settle into a single sound (I didn't even get to the Krautrock elements). Schnellertollermeier's ability to more with less (and occasional bits of more) builds on their previous success for a simultaneously constrained and adventurous exploration.
 Shobaleader One — Elektrac (Warp)
youtube
Thom Jenkinson hasn’t slowed down much since he started working as Squarepusher, whether it’s the ultrafast runs he’s capable of pulling on the bass, his relentless and often successful attempts to feed more genres into the maw of the Squarepusher project (drill’n’bass! musique concrete! krautrock! free jazz!) or, with Shobaleader one, recruiting other musicians to pull off his intricate, dense compositions live on (mostly) analog instruments. Last heard from circa 2010’s d’Demonstrator, here the quartet (including Jenkinson on bass, naturally) takes on 11 classic Squarepusher tracks and does a surprisingly credible/seamless job of performing them live (complete with approving crowd noise). The tracks are well selected for the process, even if the closing “Journey to Reedham” sounds like it came close to doing in the drummer. Perversely, aside from major Jenkinson fans, the best audience for Elektrac might actually be listeners who’ve never heard his work, because the live rendition of these highlights actually makes for a good introduction to the man’s music, whether it’s the twisty jazz-funk of “Coopers World”, the increasingly frenetic slap bass of “Deep Fried Pizza”, or the sighingly lovely “Iambic 5 Poetry.” The result is something that seems like a side project that’s actually more accessible than a lot of Squarepusher albums.
 Tsinder Ash — Offerings (Bone Weapons Records)
Offerings by Tsinder Ash
Tsinder Ash are part of an often-overlooked but quietly assertive queer music scene that is providing more diverse voices than those offered by many of the mainstream LGBTQ+ pop stars currently hogging more than their fair share of the limelight. On Offerings’ opening track, “All My Sisters” a sampled voice talks about “a new form of human being,” indicating that Ash’s music and thought processes go beyond merely thinking about sexuality and into the more complex and enlightening areas of gender and self-identification. “All My Sisters” is a fascinating work, lurching ominously forwards on carpets of seething drone but guided by a sumptuous banjo melody as Ash intone fervently “All my sisters full of rage/stand outside that circle they drew in flames.” Their voice is high-pitched and androgynous, firm and sensual where needed, fragile and haunting elsewhere. “All My Sisters” resembles an early Woven Hand track, with a similar ritual feel and passionate delivery, whereas the more sparse “Cavebirds” travels through ambient cabaret, the focus on Tsinder Ash’s almost operatic vocal delivery. They play nearly all instruments on Offerings, displaying a disarming virtuosity at every turn, whether it’s the deft guitar finger-picking on “Garnets” or the crumbling electronics on “Cavebirds”. But their voice remains the key asset of this lush, haunting EP: they draw you into Tsinder Ash’s world, lay their soul at your feet and invite you lie with them as they sing about things that really matter.
 Various Artists — Home Again Blues (Mamlish)
Tumblr media
 Contemplating the current climate of musical plenty it can be difficult to recall earlier eras when paucity of access was much closer to the norm. A contemporary of Yazoo and progenitor of later purveyors like Document and Catfish, Don Kent’s New York-based Mamlish imprint was one of the only figurative games in town when it came to reliable reissues of pre- and immediately post-War blues during the decade of the 1970s. Sourced mainly from scavenged or borrowed 78s and pressed in vinyl limited editions, Kent’s compilations and single-artist surveys returned valuable time capsules to circulation. Home Again Blues is part of an initial trilogy of reissues released on compact disc and licensed through a Polish distributor. Kent originally cast his net wide, snaring rawboned and raucous singles by regional artists from Virginia (John Tinsley), Louisiana (James Bledsoe), Michigan (L.C. Green), Texas (Frankie Lee Sims) and of course Mississippi (Luther Huff & Bluesboy Bill). The crackle of bruised and weathered acetate is part of the aural bargain although never to the point of invasiveness. Sixteen tunes may seem comparatively slim pickings by today’s copious collection standards, but the curation and annotation by Kent and radio colleague Pat Conte are both aces.
