Twig's GL Recs for March-July 2024
[Here’s my rec list for GLs through to Feb 2024 ]
Fake Buddies Korean, YouTube, 7 episodes (one ep BL, one ep GL, one ep crossover, and then 2 more BL prequel eps and two more GL prequel episodes), approx 45 minutes when compiled, Apr 27-Jun 28 2024
At first this was a little three-part series in which it turns out both members of the couple are secretly in a homosexual relationship with their best friends and using the other as a beard. Lots of comedy of errors and puns (“I like lilies better than roses”) as the characters try to make each other understand the situation they’re in. The backstory prequels were really cute friends to lovers, and it was really nice to see these couples land in solidarity! This series is short and cute and pure fluff.
To the X Who Hated Me: YunO x Jane Korean, YouTube, 3 episodes ~6 mins each, aired May 22-29 [microseries complete, X who hated me series may be ongoing]
When the previous 2-ep miniseries under this umbrella landed (which I wrote about here: ), I had no idea it was going to be a series of microseries! These are all short but good second chance romances. This one has a “reality”-show-within-a-show format, with a frustrating misunderstanding, and a good kiss. Be sure to always watch past the credits for this series!
You Are My Star, Thai, YouTube, 1ep 37 mins (aired as 3 12-min eps and then they compiled into this one short film), May 18 [complete]
youtube
This was a cute Thai GL that I enjoyed mostly because of the very clear cribbing of specific scenes from recent BLs. It was mostly trope-y (both cuteness and drama), with good kissing. See if you can spot the BL references.
Xiao Xiang Yi Jiu, Chinese, YouTube, 7 episodes 2 mins each, May 20-June 3 [complete]
youtube
This little microseries is about a girl becoming an intern for her crush/idol. Happy ending, and they do become explicitly girlfriends! No kiss because censorship.
Lonely Girls Korean, YouTube, 4 episodes 8 minutes each (32 mins compiled) May 14 [complete]
youtube
This is about a couple that struggles with the closet, lack of communication, and how to make their relationship last in the face of uncertainty. Also there’s good kisses. SukFilm have done other series before and since, but this is my fave GL of theirs so far.
The Two of Us Deep Night spinoff, Thai, YouTube, 6 episodes, 15 mins each, airing May 30-July 4 [complete]
I was so confused at first, because I didn’t realize this was supposed to be their story during the events of Deep Night that we didn’t get to see. I was excited about this one but bummed that we started the miniseries with a health scare and then a threat by Meiji to marry some guy just to make Freya jealous? I found it a little frustrating that two women in their 40s could not be honest with each other. The couple is so cute, but the storytelling is not, so take this rec with a grain of salt. Still, it’s so nice to see women in their 40s being super cute and in love in between the drama so I’m keeping it on this list! I am very glad to have gotten the dance sequence and the bath sequence.
******
And of course currently airing right now so take with a grain of salt because i don’t yet know how they end, but
Ayaka is in Love with Hiroko Japanese, 8 episodes, 25 mins, airing July 4- August 22 [ongoing]
This is a laugh-out-loud funny office comedy in which Akaya flirts desperately with her senior colleague at work, Hiorko, who then spends her evenings complaining to her friends at the lesbian bar about oblivious straights who don’t understand the meaning of what they say. I've written a little more about this show here. It is my favourite GL of the year so far and if it stays this good is on its way to being one of my favourites of all time!
The Secret of Us Thai, 8 episodes, 50 mins each, airing June 24-August 15 [ongoing]
This series starts with the cutest episode of all time and then devolves quickly into serious drama lol but it did a good job avoiding pure “noble idiocy” so I’m hopeful it will continue to hold up. As of ep3 things are happening that I did not expect, so I’m really curious how this one will go. In the meantime, it is also worth noting that these actresses are excellent kissers.
[UPDATE: Of these two that were airing, I ended up thinking I was going to have to retract for The Secret of Us but instead retracted for Ayaka Is In Love With Hiroko. I had way more fun with Ayaka week to week but the ending was really disappointing; The Secret of Us in contrast nailed the ending. I wrote about it a bit here. ]

My tips on Cascais
Having visited Cascais on four occasions, I would like to share my experiences and tips on this special place.
Accommodation
We stayed at Hotel Miragem twice and Villa Cascais once. We also took a peep at Casa da Pergola but did not stay. Accommodation at high season is expensive and tends to book early. Bargains may be had at low season or with last minute bookings. There are also several resort looking spots on the outskirts and these may be worth exploring.
Casa da Pergola is a very pretty, upmarket guesthouse, and the owner kindly showed us some rooms and they are beautifully furnished. It is small and books early.
We have stayed twice in Hotel Miragem...it’s a very large hotel, and may initially appear soul less... generally this kind of place does not appeal to me. On the positive however, it has a beautiful pool, fabulous breakfast buffet and a nice cocktail bar. The staff are friendly and courteous. We found ourselves in Cascais at short notice this year and managed to get a last minute booking and in fact on arrival an upgrade for no extra charge. So I’d recommend booking a standard room and hoping for an upgrade. We were very well looked after here... The hotel also has a fantastic gym, which might appeal to families/teens in particular.
Villa Cascais is a small boutique upmarket guesthouse and we really enjoyed this place. One negative is that it is small with no real ‘extras’. On a positive note, it has a cute bar with a lovely terrace overlooking a square...well worth a visit for a pre-dinner drink. The staff are lovely here. Facilities such as the pool can be used at the sister Hotel Albatroz nearby.
Eating in Cascais
Well, there are plenty of restaurants...some very reasonable and here follows some that we sampled....
Hifen [Prounounce Hyphen]...a tapas place...young trendy and seems popular as a venue for entertaining/ work events and is always busy so definitely book this one. It’s across a square from Villa Cascais, overlooking the public beach (to explain...public means no concessions such as paid beds/ parasols, and it was traditionally the fisherman’s beach as it was possible to enjoy it for free. There seems to be regular volleyball games on for teens in the evenings here...and nice for a swim too). So if you sit upstairs, in particular the window seats (as long as it is not too windy), you may enjoy gorgeous views and stunning sunsets. Food of course is excellent here and reasonable.
Masala...In beach area of town, opposite a wine bar (same owners!)...on our first visit (of many by the way!) I thought it was small, a bit down at heel in appearance...The food is Indian, excellent and very reasonable. Great friendly staff. We booked but they will always fit you in. I’d recommend this as a sociable venue, great for groups, families etc.
5 Sentidos (means 5 senses)...up the hill in a less touristy part of town, but plenty seem to find this place. Good and varied food to be had here, including (but sadly not always) the most delish warm chocolate pudding...worth the trip here for this alone! [Interestingly, an aside, this place is opposite a lovely little church, which on our last visit to the area was literally bursting at the seams with folk attending weekly mass...spilling out on to the street even. I was informed that the priest here is very popular so people travel to his mass!]
Mar do Inferno....Situated about 2km out of town towards Guincho. We walked home from here after dinner...a nice evening walk. You can hear the waves crashing through a cave underneath the restaurant as you eat. The area is called Boca do Inferno...a local scenic spot. This place is large, family run and a bit touristy to be honest. The menu seems very pricey at first glance as the fish (it’s all fish by the way) is priced by the kg. We luckily got a great waiter who helped us choose - this is important so you don’t over order. Not everyone seems to enjoy here but we ate very well!
Kech...a Moroccan place in the old town. We just had a lovely lunchtime salad here. Across the street is another popular spot, Melody, which also gets good reviews.
Mussels and Gin...also up the hill in the older part of town. We did not sample here, but it is always busy. It’s worth taking a stroll around this area...plenty of nice little tapas style bars and informal eateries to explore at a leisurely pace!
Cafe World of Wonders...I love this place...my husband less keen due to the lack of meat on the menu...It’s mostly a daytime spot...with mezze plates, amazing juices and a lovely rooftop eating area. It has quite the hippy vibe! Nearby there are some traditional more formal eating spots...mostly serving fish.
Santini...and finally for dessert...this is an ice cream parlour...part of a chain in Portugal but the first one opened in Cascais...so you can say this is part of your history of Cascais tour! So mostly (except for the chocolate pudding experience) I skipped dessert and instead walked in here on my way home for delicious ice cream. Definitely worth a visit!
Things to do and see in Cascais
Walk from Cascais to Estoril on the promenade. Its 3km each way so a perfect daily exercise. Running or cycling an option. Best early morning but good at any time of day. By the way, Estoril has a casino, apparently the one Ian Fleming visited and inspired him to write the James Bond books! Also this was an area for wealthy/Royal visitors and there are some beautiful old houses to be seen.
Walk or cycle to Guincho beach (opposite direction to the Estoril walk). This is windy in spots...the full walk a good 10km, so cycling might be a better option (free bikes available or better ones to hire). We walked as far as Gaia...on this road...it has a lovely restored mansion with some shops and nice places to eat...good for a lunch stop.
Guincho...a wild surf (not swim) beach with massive waves. The Bond film ‘Her Majesty’s Secret Service’ was filmed in part here!
Swim...at any of the small beach coves at Cascais...gorgeous, and clean safe sea. Try SUP...recommend this. A 30 min one to one session is €15...definitely worth it...tends to be an off shore wind so good to get a lesson to start...most enjoyable!
Day trip to Sintra...a hillside town, inland and seriously uphill so it is colder (bring a jacket). Can bus (cheap) or taxi (approx €20). In my opinion taxi is worth it....but get dropped off at exactly the first site you want to see, rather than being abandoned at the bottom of the hill on the outskirts of the town. There are 4 palaces/ big houses, some with stunning gardens to visit, all quite spaced out but with a shuttle bus going between them. Our favourite spot here was Quinta da Regullaria...a fascinating house with amazing history and magical mystical gardens. There’s a free tour daily at 2pm. This is a must see. Sintra may not be as busy off season but in Summer it is crawling with tourists, especially at weekends. On our visit, we got a taxi, went early, on a weekday, saw the Pena Palace, a fairytale place, (dropped there by taxi), then took shuttle bus to Quinta da Regullaria...and then took a taxi on to Guincho, walked the beach and took a taxi home. A busy day. We were advised not to eat in Sintra as too touristy.
Day in Lisbon...Lisbon is huge so to be honest worth a separate trip but it is a short cheap train ride from Cascais. If you go you will be dropped at Cais do Sodre train station and across the street is the Time Out Market, which has excellent food stalls/ eating places...worth a visit. If you go to Lisbon for just a day, pick one or two things to do as it is hilly and huge. Unlike Cascais it has a significant pick-pocketing problem, especially on the trams so care is needed! Look out for my tips on a weekend in Lisbon...coming soon!
Shopping. Our favourite area was the little street close to the beach...near Masala. In particular a lovely shop selling linen mainly (for women)...It’s very reasonable, and is opposite a nice little coffee shop (cannot remember the name)...serves lovely pastries coffee and fresh orange juice! You go down steps to it and take a ticket and you will be called to be served.
In the town itself, there’s a super but expensive place called Loja das Meias....(it is in Lisbon also)...worth a visit if the sale is on but still pricey. The menswear is worth a look. Max Mara and Boss are worth a peep (again, if there’s a sale on)!
Light lunch and a drink on the terrace overlooking the ocean, at Hotel Albatroz. It’s a gorgeous setting here, coming here is less about the food, I’d recommend just a salad and some nice white wine and enjoy a stunning view .
Finally, Cascais is a super friendly place...I’m reluctantly sharing my tips...part of me just wants to keep this place for myself. Coffee, wine (especially the reds) , and food are all top class. The people are so polite and friendly...The paths are tiled however and very slippy when wet, and the weather is less predictable than the Algarve so wear flat shoes. Enjoy!

This Must Be The Place: Post Punk Tribes 1978 - 1982 from MikeKeegan on Vimeo.
THIS MUST BE THE PLACE: POST-PUNK TRIBES 1978 – 1982 Friday, July 27 – Sunday, July 29
After the much-hyped filth and fury of the initial punk movement almost instantly combusted or codified, things got much more interesting. In the halcyon pre-internet days, regional scenes were allowed to grow and develop their own identifiable and often highly idiosyncratic sounds, word of one another’s development spreading slowly through fanzines and small mail order distributors. Lucky for us, there were also cameras laying around, and the rare films in this series provide an invaluable snapshot of one of the most exciting – and one of the most loosely-defined – periods of music in the 20th Century. THIS MUST BE THE PLACE is your highly opinionated guide to viewing these creatures in their native habitats.
Friday, July 27: LA BRUNE ET MOI Filmed in 1979, barely released in 1980 and subsequently completely lost until 2005, LA BRUNE ET MOI (a play on the French translation of ‘50s rock & roll film THE GIRL CAN’T HELP IT, LA BLONDE ET MOI) was surreptitiously shot in eight days on borrowed equipment. There’s a love story in there, but it’s mostly an excuse to show great performances by Ici Paris, Artefact, Edith Nylon, The Party, Marquis De Sade and gads more. Dir: Philippe Puicouyoul. Starring Pierre Clementi, Anouschska and Pierre-Jean Cayatte. In French w/ English subtitles. Digital. 1979. 50 mins. 7:30pm
ROUGH CUT AND READY DUBBED Shot on Super8 between 1978 and 1981, ROUGH CUT AND READY DUBBED captures and questions the splintered, post-Pistols UK punk scene, from scenesters to skinheads to legendary BBC Radio One godhead John Peel. Featuring performances by A Certain Ratio, The Selecter, Cockney Rejects and Sham 69. Dirs: Hasan Shah & Dom Shaw. Digital. 1982. 59 mins. 8:40pm
Plus – a SPECIAL SECRET MOVIE after the 8:40pm show! You have NOT seen this thing!
Saturday, July 28: THE SLOG MOVIE David Markey’s homespun 1982 document of the LA/OC early ‘80s hardcore scene, THE SLOG MOVIE serves as fanzine on film, combining incredible live performances by vital bands of the era (such as Circle One, Red Kross, TSOL, Fear, the Circle Jerks and many more) along with segments of hangin’ out at Oki Dog with Pat Smear and Randy Rampage, a Raymond Pettibon skateboard commercial, and much more. An indispensible document of a time, place and (under)age! Dir: David Markey. Digital. 1982. 59 mins. 7:30pm
I CAN SEE IT AND I’M PART OF IT: San Francisco Punk Portraits 1978 - 82 The time between Richard Nixon's resignation in 1974 and Reagan's ascent from CA governor to U.S. presidency in 1981 marks a prolific surge of artistic and creative production across California, often taking a sharp trajectory from the 60s utopian idealism as a strong sense of distrust and disillusionment cast its long, dark shadows and was reflected in music – once again, the natural channel for response, reaction and outrage. In San Francisco the thriving music scene developed its own punk conceit, an arsenal comprised of bands, filmmakers, artists, clubs and the ever-supportive denizens along for the ride. Gender factors largely into the equation as women were not merely audience members, but forceful contributors driving the scene. The boundary between the spectator and performer was often blurred as audience members were inspired to pick up instruments, form bands and be on the stage the very next week. The DIY aesthetic prevailed… and the cameras were rolling! I CAN SEE IT AND I’M PART OF IT is a unique glimpse into SF’s punk past – an archival treasure trove comprised of moving and still images, both amateur and professional. This shorts program, curated especially for THIS MUST BE THE PLACE, includes but is not limited to: IN THE RED is a slice of life from the perspective of two friends (co-directors Liz Keim and Karen Merchant) who followed the scene at close range. A poetic tapestry of live performance, intimate interviews (Will Shatter exposed!) and cityscapes. In the Red gives insight into a creative and politically charged environment at the dawn of the 80s. A dusty and gritty gem! Dirs: Liz Keim & Karen Merchant. Digital. 1978. 20 mins. LOUDER, FASTER, SHORTER is raw and powerful performance document recorded at the Mabuhay Gardens in March 1978 during a benefit concert for striking Kentucky coal miners. Bands UXA, The Dils, The Avengers, Sleepers, and Mutants raised over $3000! Beautifully shot, it’s an insider’s view that takes you to the belly of the beast, a musical time traveler’s delight. Dir: Mindaugus Bagdon. 16mm. 1978. 17 mins. BRUCE CONNER, a key figure in San Francisco’s artistic community since the 1950s, began documenting the SF punk scene in 1977 when his friend Toni Basil (the dancer from his seminal film Breakaway and of “Oh Mickey you’re so fine…” fame) invited him to see Devo. This portion of I CAN SEE IT AND I’M PART OF IT includes a slideshow presentation of Conner’s legendary portraits of individuals and performance shots, a primary element of the history of SF punk. Conner segment includes music videos he made during this time: MONGOLOID (music by Devo), and Mea Culpa (feauturing music by David Byrne & Brian Eno). Special thanks to Michelle Silva and Robert Conway of the Conner Family Trust, Paule Anglim, Christine and Travis and from Paule Anglim Gallery. Dir: Bruce Conner. Digital. 1977 – 1981. Approx.15 mins. Complete Program Length Approx. 70 mins. 9pm
BUZZ OR HOWL UNDER THE INFLUENCE Despite the heavy regionalism we’re focusing on in this series, these bands did not exist in a bubble. Through various magical combinations of guile, luck, stupidity and very hard work, plenty of bands got in the van and relentlessly criss-crossed the nation, serving as Johnny Appleseeds of the underground. Once the van was back on the road, a new scene had sprung. Thanks to the Hugh M. Hefner Archive of the Moving Image, we’re tapping into an unimagined motherlode of live footage from the likes of Public Image Limited, Black Flag, the Avengers, Suicide and many more, much of it shot for regional television programs or personal collections. 16mm/35mm/Digital. 1978 – 1982. Approx. 75 mins. 10:20pm
Sunday, July 29: DEBT BEGINS AT 20 Filmed in dour, totally appropriate black-and-white (much like that other paean to the Pittsburgh existence, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD), DEBT BEGINS AT 20 is a completely charming and accurate portrait of how artistically-inclined punk and synth enthusiasts in smaller regional scenes made the screechy, caterwauling tuneless tunes we’ve grown to fetishize. And why did they do it? Because they were bored out of their minds. – Bret Berg, Destroy All Movies Dir: Stephanie Beroes. 16mm. 1980. 50 mins. 7pm
DOWNTOWN 81 Jean Michel Basquiat is your cash-strapped guide around downtown Manhattan circa the end of the world, or more accurately 1981. It looks like a neutron bomb went off, and the only living creatures left are the weirdo, omnivorously post-everything musicians and artists hiding in stark lofts, cramped apartments and moldy nightclubs. This movie is an embarrassment of riches: watch DNA shred through “Blonde Redhead”, see James White & The Black’s aggro no-wave soul revue live on stage, plus Debbie Harry, Tuxedo Moon, Kid Creole & the Coconuts and more. DOWNTOWN 81 is, simply put, the coolest. Dir: Edo Bertoglio. Written by Glen O’Brien. 35mm. 1981. 73 mins. 8:15pm
Programmed by Mike Keegan and Gina Basso. Special Thanks to Bret Berg, Zack Carlson, Jake Perlin, David Markey, Liz Kleim, Mindy Bagdon, Michelle Silva, Robert Conway, Paule Anglim, Linda Scobie at Canyon Cinema and Dino Everett at the Hugh M. Hefner Moving Image Archive at the School of Cinematic Arts.

ONE DAY IN TORONTO ITINERARY – TOP THINGS TO DO IN TORONTO
BEST TIME TO VISIT TORONTO
Toronto can be an all year round destination. From Christmas markets in the winter to one of the world’s biggest Pride parades in the summer. However, winter temperatures can drop to -30. On the contrary, summers go up to 50 degrees! The best time to go is in September and October when the city puts on it’s colourful fall coat but still sits in the 20 degree weather sweet spot or April and May – when you can catch the cherry blossom season and the city takes on a pink aura! Fall and spring allow you to sightsee while the city is still not overcrowded with tourists, traffic and extreme weather conditions.
A FEW FACTS ABOUT TORONTO
Toronto is Canada’s most populated city with 25 % of the entire country’s population settling in or around the city. You will find over 8000 restaurants with more opening daily, making Toronto to be every foodie’s dream destination. If you consider yourself a food lover, Food and Sightseeing tour is exactly what you should look for by coming to this marvelous city!
Toronto holds the Guinness world record for the longest street in the world, Yonge Street, that stretches for 1896 km!
The city is also known as an “artist mecca”, with over 20 000 artists residing in it as well as 25% of all Hollywood movies filmed in it. Toronto’s film industry brings in approx. 1.5B USD each year.
TOP THINGS TO DO IN TORONTO
With so many restaurants, museums, sights and sounds it can be overwhelming to try and see everything. Follow this guide and you’ll get the best of Toronto in one day!
Start your day at Union Station
Pearson airport express train will take you straight to Toronto’s busiest subway station – Union. This station has around 300,000 people passing on a standard business day and it’s the perfect start to experience the vibrant lifestyle of the city.
Have breakfast at St. Lawrence Market
A short 10 min walk on Front Street will take you to the St. Lawrence Market, named World’s Best Food Market by National Geographic in 2012.
With over 100 vendors, you can find anything from traditional Jewish “bagels” to Ukrainian perogies, local cheeses, or the Canadian peameal bacon sandwich. After you have breakfast have a coffee or a drink in the Great Hall and complete your visit with a walking tour to hear about the Markets 200-year-old history.
Explore the Distillery District
Continue walking on Front Street for 15 minutes and reach the historical Distillery District. The area is the best-preserved collection of Victorian Architecture in North America. It is the home to over 40 heritage buildings and courtyards, boutiques and artisan shops and a popular walking destination. You can shop, eat, explore or wake up your inner photographer here and meet people from all over the world.
Live on The Edge on CN Tower
Take the bus on Front Street or walk up to King Street and take the 504 streetcar that will get you near the CN (Canadian National) tower, before the night crowds. Built in 1976 as a satellite tower, it held the record for the World’s Tallest Building and Freestanding Structure until 2007.
You can choose to take the glass elevator to the observation deck, lie down on the glass floor or test your limits and walk outside on the towers edge around the circumference of the roof! The first of its kind in North America, The Edge Walk makes for a once-in-a-lifetime thrilling experience!
Have lunch in Kensington Market
Hop on the Spadina Streetcar that will take you through the hectic Chinatown all the way to Toronto’s most vibrant neighborhood – Kensington Market. It’s a bohemian neighbourhood populated with artists and packed with affordable cafes and restaurants. Since Canada’s Marijuana legalisation in 2018, you can find a variety of dispensaries and indulge in the local past time before choosing one of the restaurants. You can find Chinese, Portuguese or Colombian cuisine here. Looking to try something different? Try Rasta Pasta – a Jamaican Italian fusion!
Check out Queen Street West
Voted one of the coolest neighbourhoods by Vogue magazine and just a 5 min walk down from Kensington is the trendy Queen Street. The street stretches throughout the city but walk east from Bathurst Street and check out the cool shops like The Condom Shack or have a photo session in the Graffiti Alley. You can shop on the local “TSOQ” (The Store On Queen) for a fresh new look or have a drink at “Bowine Sex Club” (not an actual sex club) – the alternative live music haven downstairs and a relaxing tiki rooftop patio upstairs!
Shop at Eaton Centre and Bloor Street
Take the 501 East to Queen and Yonge and explore the largest Toronto mall on the longest street in the world. You can find clothes, shoes, jewelry at all price ranges here but if you want to indulge in some luxury shopping take the Yonge street and walk over Yonge-Dundas square for some street entertainment all the way up to Bloor Street and check out the stores like Holt Renfrew, Davids, Tiffany, Prada, Louis Vuitton, and Hermes for some luxury items.
Watch the sunset at the Harbourfront
Use your last hours to treat all your senses. Hop on the Yonge-University subway back to Union station and walk down to Harbourfront. It is the lakefront neighbourhood overlooking Toronto Islands and Lake Ontario. The views are spectacular and the air is fresh! You can try a local craft beer at Amsterdam Brewery, have a nice dinner or just hang out at Sugar Beach – an urban park beach with live music and festivals. Interested in a planned tour? Try one of the many boat tours. For an added romantic touch take the sunset cruise!
Party in the Fashion District
Still have time left? Take the 510 streetcar up to Fashion District and enjoy a night out. The name derives from the early 20th century when the area was a textile centre. Today, the old factories and warehouses house a variety of clubs and bars. Want to laugh the night away? Try Second City – a comedy club that gave the world comedians like Mike Myers and Martin Short. Feeling like a drink with a twist? Have one at SpiN nightclub – a martini bar with ping pong tables. Still not enough? Walk out on King St W and just close your eyes, wherever you point you will find a lounge, bar or club to go to!
WHERE TO STAY IN TORONTO
The Omni King Edward Hotel The original luxury hotel, built in 1903, this establishment has a royal feel to every moment of your stay. While consolidating present day solace and polish, The Omni King Edward Hotel still has the castle like loftiness. Marble washrooms and custom vintage sheets combined with its central location by St. Lawrence market make for a extraordinary stay in Toronto!
The Beverley Hotel Encompassed by shops and eateries, The Beverley Hostel is set on stylish Queen Street West in Toronto. This boutique lodging offers rooms with a moderate stylistic theme and free WiFi. A bar, eatery, rooftop bar, and retail shop are on site so you can relax and enjoy views of the city at any time.
The Novotel Toronto Centre Including an indoor pool, hot tub and spa, Novotel Toronto Center is situated inside a 10-minute stroll of Toronto Union Station and Air Canada Center. Visitors can appreciate the on-location eatery and free WiFi accessible all through the property. The Toronto Center Novotel is a 4-minute stroll from the Hockey Hall of Fame. DAY TRIPS FROM TORONTO
Niagara Falls Desert the Toronto noise for the striking magnificence of Niagara Falls. Begin with a drive through Niagara’s wine district on the way to the falls. Journey up Niagara River for a spectacular view of the great Horseshoe Falls and afterward head down to the Whirlpool Rapids perception deck. After a long day of sightseeing you’ll want a glass of wine. Luckily, one of the many Niagara wineries is there to quench your thirst.
Elora George National Park Take an hour bus ride up to The Elora Gorge. A prominent vacation spot situated at the western edge of Elora, Ontario, Canada. As the Elora Gorge Conservation Area, it is one of the numerous preservation regions claimed by the Grand River Conservation Authority. Spend the day hiking, swimming, tubing or just enjoying the sights and sounds of untouched nature.
Toronto Islands Take the ferry or a taxi boat from Harbourfront to the Centre Toronto Island and spend the day at the Island Zoo, at the beach or sipping beer in one of the many restaurants located around the island. If you’re feeling like going down to your birthday suit take the ferry or a water taxi to Hanlan’s Point drop off and then bike or walk to the beach. (about a 20 min walk). The South end of Hanlan’s Beach is clothing optional!
EXTRA TIPS FOR VISITING TORONTO
Buy a TTC Day Pass – instead of spending 3.25 CAD per trip, buy a day pass that allows you to travel all through the city on buses, streetcars and the subway. There are group and family options available as well. You can buy the pass at every Subway Station within the City of Toronto.
Plan your visit around one of the city’s festivals – September brings Toronto Film Festival and the hottest Hollywood stars flood the city for a week. You can check out one of the films as well. The same month has Nuit Blanche – an all night art installation and performance festival. Bars are open later and the city is packed until early morning the next day.
Use the bike share program – Toronto loves cyclists! There are public bikes you will find docked all around the city. You can rent them by hour, day or even a week. Just pick one up and drop it off wherever you see another station.

My opinion on a Happy Ending (FWIW)
Obviously I believe wholeheartedly in banjogate, and my belief in it has never wavered. Even without the evidence we’ve found, i simply would not buy the end is the end.
It doesn’t fit with anything Peter’s written before. It doesn’t fit with the narrative of the story. It doesn’t fit with how TV shows are written. It doesn’t fit with how Peter has described the show (feel-good, make people happy). NOTHING about it would make sense as an actual ending, unless Peter has had a brain transplant and Sian and Paul and the BBC execs have all lost their damn minds. So, no.
So, if we take ti as read that this ISN’T the end, you then have to look at what Peter’s said publicly, and ask why? Why create this big drama? Why not just show the series in full, say it’s the end beforehand and let the country enjoy it?
IMO, the reason not to is to create a TV moment, a cultural impact the kind Peter grew up idolising - things like the Morecambe & Wise specials, Only Fools & Horses etc.
Two of the biggest comedies of the 80s were will-they-won’t-they romances - To the Manor Born and Just Good Friends. Both shows had HUGE climactic happy endings which were MASSIVE ratings winners, and I think Peter wants to have one of those TV moments to his name.
Peter specifically mentioned that he didn’t want Car Share to be Just Good Friends (though he loved it) because “they did circle each other for a good few series.”
It should be noted with Just Good Friends, it was meant to end after its second series, but it ended with an unhappy ending - the couple not together - but the public were so unhappy, 2 years later they filmed a 3rd and final series where they did eventually get together.
The last episode of season 2 was meant to be the final episode ever. it got HUGE viewing figures, and the audience was left heartbroken and devastated as the girl left the guy and walked out of his life... sound familiar?
Peter says he doesn't want to do a Just Good Friends but leaves the audience on the same point their audience did? I don’t think so.
I think this shows that Peter wants to give the audience the same feeling as these show did - shows that made you think this was the end, and then give you that huge high of the surprise happy ending being delivered. The unhappy ending was what we had, BUT he will deliver the happy ending in grand style.
I say grand style because you don’t create a big lie like this, create a huge situation, and then “fix it” in a throwaway 10 minutes in the middle of Children in Need or Comedy Shuffle. If this is going to be worth how upset he’s made the fans, it needs to be BIG - and that means at least 1 full episode (likely 2, to complete the 6 episode standard Peter has always done) to have impact. Something that can be trailed as the big conclusion. Something that would create Just Good Friends level of buzz.
I know some people have worries about how could they manage to film 1 or 2 whole episodes extra without anyone knowing - and the answer is, they wouldn’t be “extra”...
They filmed season 1 from May - June, with the cafe scene from 1x06 being filmed in December (no idea why, presumably logistics). It took them 2 months to film 6 episodes.
In summer 2016 they filmed season two - from approx 2 May to 27 June. So they took 2 months to film only 4 episodes? The same length of time it took them to film 6?
Also, due to the WAY they film the episodes - all episodes are filmed simultaneously, with all scenes in one location filmed at once, no matter which episode they are from. Thus in the week of 24th May, they filmed all the scenes at Our Mandy’s house, from eps 1 to 4, and possible 5 and 6 too. How would anyone know which episode they are from?
There’s nothing stopping them from filming another 2 episodes, using much of the same locations as the other episodes without anyone being aware or suspicious at all.
Now, that decided the only question is HOW willt hat big ending be delivered? I posted this on Digital Spay but thought it was worth repeating here.
The way I see it, the format of the conclusion will go one of several ways:
1) Purely DVD release - to me this is the LEAST likely. It comes off as mercenary and manipulative, and it wouldn't have the same impact as other methods as it's not going to result in an impactful "event" of the episodes airing.
2) Christmas TV airing - this is the method most likely to make the biggest impact. Frankly I think it would be MASSIVE. If 5 million or so were watching s2 on a Tuesday evening, with no advance warning that it was the final season - I think a Christmas day airing of the last ever episode + guaranteed happy ending = over 10 million viewers. This would be a huge thing, and I can imagine Peter would love to have something this big under his belt to be in TV Christmas history, given his love for Tv and the culture of British TV, and thus the importance of the Christmas episode. In many ways this format is perfect, however it IS missing the charity aspect that Peter is so fond of. Will he go totally for impact and iconic TV moment over charity? Plus, of course he’s said no Christmas special. Would an episode from season 2 SHOWN at Christmas perhaps not be classed as a Christmas special?
ALSO, another problem with this method is the DVD issue - if the episode airs on Christmas Day with the DVD coming out afterwards, they will miss the BIG pre-Christmas DVD market - which we know is a HUGE deal. They would possibly have to wait until the following autumn to release the DVD and hope to become THAT Christmas' big seller. Would they be willing to wait that long after it's been on TV?
3) Cinema screenings - It's possible he's going to do at the end of the season what he did at the start, and air 2 episodes in cinemas in aid of charity. There is a precedent for this, so we know it's absolutely something he'd do. We know he loves to do big things for charity, and the end of Car Share would be a BIG thing that would no doubt sell out. Again, the downside is the lack of impact, but it's possible he sees charity as more important than that and the episodes would air on TV shortly after the cinema screenings and still be a big ratings winner.
4) TV airing not at Christmas - it's possible he may be telling the 100% truth about it not being a "Christmas special" and instead have it air at a different time, the most likely being around Children in Need in November. Doing this would allow for the DVD release to be before Christmas, it would include the charity element and still be a universal airing thus resulting in water-cooler impact. I could see it airing as part of CiN, possibly with a stipulation that it will only air after a certain amount of money is raised. Also, November is usually when the Dance for Life tickets go on sale, so that would tie in together with the publicity. The downsides are that in these telethons there are never LONG pieces airing, skits etc are usually less than 15 mins - and I don't think our resolution is going to be that short.
Basically what I'm saying is, I don't know WHAT they are going to do but I don't have a single doubt in my mind they ARE airing at least one more episode and we'll know by Christmas.

Showreel Research
Blog 15
Upon leaving university I am to have a professional showreel in which clearly displays my skills within TV and Film, specifically my skills within the sound sector. Creating an audio showreel I predict will be difficult due to the content of my showreel being more concentrated on sound, over visuals. Key aspects I must remember to think about while creating my showreel includes qualities such as:
Keep it short (Approx 3-5 mins long)
Label everything e.g. job role/ equipment/ type of sound edit
Don’t fuss over the content as the audio/ sound is what I want to showcase
Before I went about creating my own audio showreel I began conducting research into audio based showreel’s in which inspire the structure and quality of my own. Below are two examples I found online in which will aid me creating my own audio showreel.
Example One -
What I found inspirational within this audio showreel is how the sounds where able to collated together to a montage in which not only creates a story line but is also engaging to the audience. Like previously stated the content is not key however having it be relative and impressive will all aid in creating a professional and impressive CV.
Example Two -
What I enjoyed about this showreel was about how personal it was to the artist, the spectator got to see the worker in person and get a good understanding of his personality. Similarly as a spectator you could see how passionate he was to his industry and his job, this is an aspect I hope to show within my own showreel.

Manchester Animation Festival - Tuesday 14th November 2017
Student Films 1
Watching the student’s films gave me both pride and amazement over the animation community. The different creations and stories shown gave me more inspiration and determination for my own direction within this career.
A Song For The Whales
Director: Lorenzo Fresta Country: United States Year: 2017 Length: 00:05:00 Technique: Digital 2D Language: Gaelic
“In a cold northern village, whose identity can only be found in a history of violence and blood, a young princess tries to help her brother to find his own way.“
This animation’s style of both characters and background design were simply beautiful and fit perfectly combined. The use of smoothly painted backgrounds with the contrast of thin lined characters were visually appealing with the mystical story. The story itself was engaging and heart felt as the older brother of the two main characters has to make a tough decision between his tribe and his younger brother’s wishes.
Liv
Original Title: Liv Director: Sunniva Fluge Hole Country: United Kingdom Year: 2017 Length: 00:03:58 Technique: Digital 2D Language: Norwegian
“Instead of sitting around waiting for death, Liv goes back to her roots to live out the rest of her days in the wild.”
Mainly what I can say about this animation is the great representation of a decent to death. The old woman in the film is a strong, independent figure who makes her own send off a peaceful one. Her pet dog within the film also respectfully sticks by her until the very end. This animation is another great example of combining smooth washed backgrounds with the use of lined characters, it adds more to this film with the use of colour pallet creating a feel for the hills and wilder land of the UK.
Cops & Robbers
Original Title: Räuber & Gendarm Director: Florian Maubach Country: Germany Year:2017 Length: 00:08:15 Technique: Digital 2D Language: German
“Daniel is playing 'Cops and Robbers' with his friends. Carla is there too. She brought Christian. Daniel wishes to be alone with her. He watches her, hidden on the playground. The sun goes down.”
A very relatable and sympathetic story of a boy with a crush on a girl, in which has its own obstacles. The first person view of the story immerses you in their perspective making his situation tenser for the audience. I found the whole film very interesting and very well paced in terms of its writing and direction. The art style of the film had its own 2D style but gave more personality to the individual characters within the story line. I highly enjoyed this film.
NUEVA VIDA
Director: Jonathan Seligson Country: United States Year: 2017 Length: 00:06:58 Technique: Digital 2D Language: English
“A ball, some brains, and a lot of fluids. A cautionary true tale on the dangers of playing soccer from my dear brother, Kenny.”
An amazing story from a man who’s had a wild adventure of himself and the journey he was having. The style of the film really appealed to my own and the use of black and white pallet gave the sense of a past story coming to life through the man’s words. This also shown through great and direct imagery on screen. It made the environment both tense and worried for this character whilst we were pulled into his traumatic story.
Student Films 2
Grandpa Walrus
Original Title: Pépé le morse Director: Lucrèce Andreae Country: France Year: 2017 Length: 00:14:45 Technique: Digital 2D Language: French
“On the windy and cloudy beach, Granny is praying, Mum is shouting, the sisters don’t care, Lucas is alone. Grandpa was a weird guy, now he’s dead.”
A story of a family accepting death of a beloved family member, ‘Grandpa Walrus’. The film shows the individual character’s dealing with the death in there own ways as they visit Grandpa’s death bed with his ashes. The Grandma attempting and succeeding in releasing his ashes on this sandy shore to make peace with the rest of the family hitting a wall of realisation that their Grandpa is actually gone. The style of the visuals and story in this short reminds me of the quality of Studio Ghibli’s work in which amazed me. Such an excellent and I give much props to the student.
After All
Director: Michael Cusack Country: Australia Year: 2016 Length: 00:13:22 Technique: Stop Motion Language: English
“After all is said and done... all that is left are memories. A man cleans out his childhood home remembering past conversations.”
This story is very strong and filled with emotion. A man dwelling in memories of his lost mother, conversing through each step leading towards her death. Throughout the poor man is tortured through what was said and done in the past but once everything was contoured he get’s relief and sweeter thoughts over his mother’s passing. The detail within the characters were so well done and mirrored real life with expression and interaction. I admire the use of the same environment set in different ways to create each memory and scenes through props.
Creating Worlds At Aardman
From the depths of the Pirate Captain’s cabin, to the rolling hills of Mossy Bottom Farm, to the lush forest valley of Nick Park’s latest film Early Man, the crew at Aardman are responsible for creating some incredible worlds in miniature. These authentic environments give the character’s depth and act as an impressive environment for the animators to inhabit. Animator and Director Will Becher offers an insight into Aardman’s creative process, and looks at how the sets, puppets and performance help create some of the studio’s most iconic characters and shorts.
Viewing the amount of effort and design put into the different world’s created by Aardman shows why the film’s are so successful. They really immerse you into the character’s world and everything within it, even with subtle hints with props. The attention towards the characters also goes a long way as each moment of an expression is separately moulding, same with other aspects like different outfits, hands etc.
I was very grateful to see exclusive content of the upcoming film ‘Early Man’ including main figures in the film.
The World of Tomorrow Double Bill
Director: Don Hertzfeldt Country: USA Year: 2015 & 2017 Language: English Approx. Run time: 50 mins Certification:15
The highly anticipated follow-up to Don Hertzfeldt’s World of Tomorrow finds Emily Prime swept inside the brain of an incomplete back-up clone of her future self, who’s on a mission to reboot her broken mind. Continuing the tradition of the first film, World of Tomorrow Episode Two was written entirely around candid audio recordings of Hertzfeldt’s five-year-old niece.
Director Don Hertzfeldt is a two-time Academy Award nominee whose animated films include It’s Such a Beautiful Day, World of Tomorrow, The Meaning of Life, and Rejected. His work has played around the world, receiving over 250 awards, and made a special guest appearance on The Simpsons in 2014. Seven of his films have screened in competition at the Sundance Film Festival, where he is the only filmmaker to have won the overall Grand Jury Prize for Short Film twice.
Indiewire called World of Tomorrow “one of the best films of 2015,” while The Dissolve named it “one of the finest achievements in sci-fi in recent memory.” The A.V. Club described the film as “visionary” and “possibly the best film of 2015.” Rolling Stone ranked World of Tomorrow #10 on its list of the “Greatest Animated Movies Ever.”
This two part film was absolutely amazing, I loved the mix between a harsh reality and humour. The simplicity of design allowed focus on the story and writing in which was about this twisted future reality of an adult clone version of a young girl called Emily, without her caring she follows the clone on a adventure of discovery and perception. This film makes you think and wonder for the characters involved, it is intriguing with its content.
