I like Batman. I like Batman as a character. I like Bruce Wayne. But it is very unserious when people act like Jason Todd, or maybe Damian, the robins as a whole, or any one writer, or any specific story arc, is singlehandedly corrupting Bruce’s character into an severe and inflexible colleague and distant, emotionally-unavailable father. Because even if he hadn't consistently been a questionable, loving yet unhealthy AT BEST father figure in the majority of his appearances since the early 80s (and I do mean to Dick, to Cass (actually shaping her into his image in Batgirl 2000 at the cost of her social development and autonomy ISNT good,) a BAD mentor to Steph, not even getting into Helena, like truly it’s not all about Jason?) The first well-written book that comes to mind where his morality is at its worst imo? That’s Wonder Woman: Hiketeia. No robins, no batfamily, just Bruce putting aside Wonder Woman’s input and the context of the situation and chasing down a girl who killed the men responsible for trafficking, assaulting, and killing her baby sister, to the point where it ends with her jumping off a cliff.

And the thing is I still like reading him in Hiketeia, because he fills the role he needs to fill in that story well, his actions align with his wordview even if it’s taken to the extreme in an uncharitable way, and he keeps my attention. I just think it’s goofy how some of us on here look at the guy who’s big character trait is being a hard-to-know, stubborn, and condescending control freak who puts other people's emotions on the wayside in favor of his mission prolifically, and go “all he did was LOVE TOO MUCH! His mean kids and associates and teammates are PUNISHING HIM for LOVING with his BIG BIG HEART and it’s tainting the narrative!” And you could say “well Hiketeia doesn't count, Greg Rucka is just a hater!” (though I certainly wouldn’t.) But when the issue is Damian entertaining the idea of leaving the family business, and before that it’s Red Hood stepping on toes, and then, wait, before that it’s Green Arrow and Wonder Woman, and then Huntress, and then oh wait we can’t think about the weird patch with Nightwing where their relationship was super rocky, and then Jason but before he died, and of course the Green Lanterns are basically treated like punching bags for him to do something awesome then- Like maybe if it’s a consistent pattern spanning what, 20, 30 years now? The issue isn’t Damian or Red Hood alone, or PKJ or Greg Rucka or Judd Winick or Marv Wolfman + George Perez or even Jim Starlin being a hater, but your blorbo just having extremely well-documented character flaws?

COOKING FOR TIMES OF EXHAUSTION WITH CATE

made a lovely shakshuka for dinner!!! based on this Matty Matheson video. I watched the video because youtube is tempting when I’m exhausted, and then I was like “I think I could cook that even while exhausted”.

prep the following:

one large onion, sliced thinly

one red bell pepper, sliced thinly

one red fresno pepper, chopped into little bits

three garlic cloves, smashed

put your spices in a bowl:

1 1/2 tsp paprika (this should technically be smoked paprika but I don’t like smoky flavor)

1 tsp hot paprika

1 tsp cumin

if you have a very large cast iron pan with a great big circumference, use that. if you do not have that, use a large saucepot of whatever substance you like. put your dish of choice on the stove at medium heat, add some olive oil. when the oil is hot, add your onion. give that a stir, cook for two to three minutes. add your bell peppers, fresno pepper, and garlic. stir, cook until it has cooked way down. onions should be very soft but not carmelized, peppers should be pretty soft. at that point dump your spices in. stir, two minutes.

now, add:

1 large can of whole peeled tomatoes, one at a time, crushing them in your hand and making a giant mess as you go. also add the liquid from the can

half a can of chickpeas (for extra protein!!)

pinch of salt, black pepper

simmer for about twenty-five minutes or until the sauce has thickened. preheat oven to 425.

meanwhile, put about two tablespoons of butter into a fresh pan and add two smashed garlic cloves. when the butter has melted and the flavors have combined, dip flatbreads into the butter one by one, and then stack them up in the pan and let them get warm, flipping them around with tongs so the one on the bottom doesn’t get burned or soggy. when warm, put on a plate and sprinkle with za’atar.

if you’re doing the shakshuka in a cast-iron pan, this next step stays in the cast iron pan. if you don’t have a cast iron pan or the one you have isn’t colossal, you want to at this point transfer the sauce to a 9x16 glass dish.

RIGHT before you’re ready to eat, make little wells in the sauce and crack eggs into them. the goal should be at least four eggs but if you have a gargantuan cast iron pan (like Matty) maybe you can do more. salt and pepper your eggs. place in oven and cook 5 to 8 minutes, until the whites of the eggs have set.

use a spatula to get under an egg and it’s surrounding sauce and put it in a bowl. serve with a squeeze of lemon, fresh parsley, and feta, and eat it with the garlic butter za’atar flatbread. (it calls for pita but the store near me has terrible pita so we used naan)

mako mori's age was something i was puzzling over while rewatching the movie, after the clear timeline of raleigh's age given in the opening monologue

Based on the information in the film, Raleigh is around 27 years old: age 15 when the first kaiju landed in san francisco, age 22 seven years later when he and yancy fight knifehead, and approximately 27 in 2025 when he meets Mako Mori

Mako's age is a little more nebulous. Her canonical age is given on the wiki as 22, which would have made her 13 when Pentecost defeated Onibaba in 2016. However, Mana Ashida, who played little Mako, was 8 years old at the time of filming. While age and appearance is not an exact science, particularly for children, based on her appearance and behavior in the flashback, I would find it hard to believe she was older than 10, which would make Mako at most 20 or 21 in the film.

Based on how young Mako appears in the flashback and the date given for the battle with Onibaba, I would hazard that Mako Mori is likely somewhere between age 19 and 21 when she pilots Gipsy Danger. That tracks with both her respectful/deferential relationship with Stacker and his reluctance to allow her to pilot a Jaeger, as well as her intense focus on getting revenge for her family; as well as adds an interesting perspective to her goodbye with Stacker where he passes the responsibility on to her.

TL;DR based on the film, Mako Mori is likely somewhere between 19 and 21 years old at the time she piloted Gypsy Danger and saved the world at great personal cost. In effect, the end of the kaiju war was also the end of her life with Stacker and the Shatterdome, as well as what remained of her childhood.

Ko-fi may say they take 0% fees on donations but that's not including payment processor fees which is about 5% depending on currencies and locations, then 10% for shop items

for anyone wondering whats up, i was about to start finishing the proofreading of some fanfic drafts to post in succession (3 one-shots and 2 chapters for one of my fanfics), but then unfortunately (heavy on the unfortunate because wtf) i got a surprise promotion to managing the entire construction project...so now I'm scrambling to learn everything the managers do to keep this project afloat. thankful for the vote of confidence, but they only gave me a week to figure stuff out
