you know, for all the horrors of pre-invasion lorien's worldbuilding, i think the single most bone-chilling thing about it is the 'loric spark.'

every single garde has been implanted with an RFID chip from the moment they got their legacies, if not birth. the entity always knows where they are. and it's proven that it can and will pass on this information to people who can act on it. who might, oh, say, make the laws that oppress and control them. the people who might hunt down parents who tried to make a run for it with their babies before they could be ripped out of their arms.

every system like this inevitably has people who manage to slip through the cracks. but the garde can't. they never could. there is nowhere to run; there is nowhere to hide.

#lorien legacies #LL entity #LL tag #LL crit tag #everything to do with the entity is Absolutely Terrifying holy shit #the problem with these authors is that they are really good at writing genuinely upsetting systemic horror #there are a lot of times where i read about the cruel; dehumanizing atrocities carried out by the mog cult; and how normalized it is #and it gets to me! it very much has the effect they were going for!#and everything to do with the academy and systemic attitudes and initiatives toward earth garde in LLR is horrific #to a degree where even if they hadn't waffled about Whether It Was Actually Bad the way they did i'm not sure i'd be able to finish it #......the thing is that they are also very good at writing systemic horror by /accident/#whether at all or going 'yea this is fucked' and not realizing or exploring exactly how bad it is #and/or they point it out and then just kind of wave it off later; often to be hypocritical about it #because they need their Bad Guys to Be Bad and Their Good Guys to Be Good #the result is that systemic horror from the mogs makes me go /whoof/ whereas systemic horror from lorien is just [incoherent screaming]#and it hits me much worse in LLR because it is very much involved in Real World Shit and they CANNOT seem to make up their minds #about what is and isn't systemic horror; or who is responsible for being complicit in it #i Cannot with it man exaggerated fantasy alien worldbuilding is bad enough #anyway.
