I finally have faces to put to these voices!!!

(Design process and kinda-rant under the cut)

It took several years and a shit-ton of trial and error but I think I've finally found redesigns for these two that I'm happy with!!! Designs that meet the game canon standard and breathe new life into the characters, while not entirely forgoing what made the original designs so identifiable. Sonia was the most difficult for me. Her fur and outfit colors are so close to each other that they not only can make her look like she's not wearing leggings, but given Sonic Underground's apparently-low budget, that means tons of coloring/animation errors. I also felt like she could easily be confused for Amy (which actually happened at one point!) so I wanted to try and put as much visual distance between them as possible without making Sonia unrecognizable. One way I did that was with her quills; them looking almost like separate "hair" in her original design inspired me to reinterpret it as a bleached undercut. For the longest time I wasn't sure how to represent the "shaved" part on a mobian but my lovely brother was nice enough to help me figure it out. As for Sonia's outfit, I turned her dress/top and skirt into an 80s-esque top with shoulder pads and shortened her gloves; overall I was going less for "fashion vomit princess" and more for "glam rock starlet" and I think I pulled it off. Manic was significantly easier but still took a while to get there. I never knew what I wanted for his quills, sometimes I wanted them short and sometimes I wanted them long. His bangs, gloves, and converse are all taken from the character creator in Sonic Forces. I made him more of a jade green to help him stand out from all the other green Sonic characters, ESPECIALLY Jet and Surge; I actually had to throw together a bit of a Sonic color chart in order to get this right. His outfit's pretty straightforward, I wanted to stay within the realm of skater/punk/ska/grunge. I almost kept his vest but decided the sleeveless hoodie looked better, same with the gloves (I took away the spiked cuffs b/c it felt too much like Surge). I didn't draw their medallions/instruments but they still have them, though Sonia has a keytar instead. I also gave them both silver eyes to show their relation to each other (Aleena has them too), no particular reason, I just felt like silver was a cool-enough and relatively unique eye color to use. In this context, they're still brother and sister but aren't related to Sonic at all due to them not being owned by SEGA (however, they DO get to go on an adventure with him that requires them to work together and they get to be very close during that time, I'll share the details later). At this point the only changes I'd make are giving Sonia darker leggings and Manic eyeliner Maybe in the future I'll post a supercut of all the designs I went through to get here
