I think Girls Band Cry has finally edged out Jellyfish as my girl band show of the season, and probably my favorite overall as well. I caved and caught up with the other group doing fansubs (their translations are on par, although the subs themselves aren't as fancy), and I just....wow. There's a lot to process here. This post is going to be long.
So, Nina's pa is aware of her faltering grades and now that she's talked to her sister about the band, her family is probably going to know all about that soon as well. Naturally, she has not told any of this to said band. The girl's natural inclination to simply Not Tell People Things is going to absolutely blow up in the second half of the show, I'm sure.
The use of traditional flat animation to convey the past---bygone periods of one's life, memories that have gotten hazy in the recollection---is probably the smartest thing Girls Band Cry does visually. Other uses of 2D animation in the series can feel like a concession, these very much do not.
Of course I wrote that and then they did the broken glass split shot thing when Momoka announced she was leaving the band, so I don't know. The series is just very inventive, visually, and I like that, even if most of the visual symbolism is not necessarily subtle.
Mine, the character in red who's given a supporting role here for what is honestly not a ton of screentime, makes an immense impact in the brief amount that she's on screen. We have somebody here who is herself not "successful" in the broad-stroke pop star sense, but who is clearly at least getting by and making a living with her music. It's inspiring, in a way, and I think that Nina might feel that way too.
I've avoided using the P-word much in my writing lately, because I think it's easy to attribute to passion all sorts of other emotions that might be described better with other terms, but if we read this work as a reflective one, we can assume that the people working on it feel similarly to Mine about their own profession. Things can be difficult, they can be hard, but you push through for your own sake. Because, if you're really that devoted to what you're doing, you almost have to.
In another piece of awesome yet obvious visual symbolism, when Nina redoubles her commitment to the band, she runs to a nearby lake and happens to catch the start of a fireworks show. I kind of love this series.
In episode 7's final moments, in the middle of a concert, the band, which has remained nameless for the entire first half of the show, is finally (and hastily) christened Togenashi Togenari. A literal line-of-sight name, because Nina is an insane person.
Episode 8 opens on a flashback, immediately reflecting Nina's current desire to drop out of school with Momoka's past plan to do the exact same thing. This entire section is flat animated, which to me is enough evidence to confirm that the show's usage of 2D animation to represent the past is an intentional stylistic choice.
Momoka remarks that if Diamond Dust gives themselves an escape route from their desire to make it big, they'll definitely end up using it rather than succeeding, so they shouldn't make one. It's interesting to note that this is the same philosophy that no less an artist than Eminem once advocated. I'm not sure it's the best advice, necessarily, but you can't deny the drive.
Subaru correctly points out that Nina's drive to succeed isn't as far-fetched as it seems, given various factors (those listed include; Tomo & Rupa being somewhat notable indie musicians, Momoka being an ex member of Diamond Dust to begin with, an endorsement on Twitter from another singer, etc.) Nina's plan is no plan---the same that Momoka had as a teenager---no escape routes, no backup plans.
It's notable that Nina's memories don't get the 2D treatment, and I think that may be because unlike Momoka, she's not romanticizing her own past. Momoka, we can clearly see by this point, is guilty of seeing Nina as a slightly younger version of herself in too literal a sense. She thinks that because she failed with Diamond Dust, she'll fail with Togenashi Togenari too, and that Nina will fail with Togenashi Togenari too, because "that's how these things go." She fails to consider that the only data point she's operating off of is her own, and what the final scene---and the inevitable confrontation with the renewed Diamond Dust---tells us, which is that the original group splitting up might have been best for both them and Momoka.
And then there's the final scene, which I find hard to put into words. It's just so much. Momoka cranking her own old song, crying her eyes out, as Nina says she loves her (!!!!!) as they speed down the highway. This show is unhinged. I love it to pieces.
Truly we are in the middle of a girls band revolution. I never like to promise these things, but I might review this when it's over.
Worth noting! The show TRENDED ON TWITTER FOR SEVERAL HOURS after this episode aired. It really does feel like an *event.* I haven't seen this many people pop for an original anime in ages.

So I have question and I thought maybe you would have insights. I'm not British or American, so maybe things work differently than I understand. Michael's new drama on BBC Best Interests had started this week. I was surprised there was no interview with Michael about it from what I've seen. Usually when a TV show go on air there are at least some articles or talk shows with the main actors, so why he is so silent? He also didn't post anything about it or good omens s2, which also made me a bit worried. I know he's directing a series now but I expected he would at least post something about them. I don't want to be pessimistic but I'm preparing myself for a letdown with GO s2 promoting. Neil already said something about the fact that second seasons don't get the same level of events if I remember correctly, and he wouldn't be able to promote it due to the strike, and I was really excited about all the new Michael and David content we will get but what if there will be nothing almost? Is it a possibility? If best interests isn't being promoted by him maybe GO will not be promoted too? That will break my heart a little.
(Also I saw one episode of BI and I thought it was interesting, moving and Michael and the actor who played his wife were incredible. It is such a different character for him, his range is truelly incredible).
Hello, Anon! Again, apologies for being a bit delayed in answering this, but I appreciate you writing in to me.
So yes, Michael's show Best Interests did air a few weeks ago (I've seen almost all of the episodes and am hoping to write a review of it as I make my way through all my Anons). I can tell you that he actually did do some interviews for it--this one here in the Guardian, and this one in the Telegraph, and there might have been others that I've missed, though @invisibleicewands would probably know for sure.
I think there are a couple of things that happened with these interviews, which is that any promotion to BI unfortunately got overshadowed by the clickbait headline on the Telegraph article that ultimately led to a few clashes on Twitter between Michael and Laurence Fox (Billie Piper's ex, of all people?) about Michael's comments related to non-Welsh actors playing Welsh roles. So that, along with Michael continuously working on The Way (the series he was directing) nonstop is what I think kept him off of social media up until now.
(I will say, though, that it is curiously worth noting that Michael didn't do any kind of promotion for Staged 3, and all of that seemed to fall to Georgia and AL to repeatedly post about on their socials instead...)
As for GO 2, yes, it is true that the Writers' strike and possible impending SAG strike have thrown multiple wrenches into the proceedings (for instance, the GO 2 panel that was to have taken place at SDCC has been cancelled, as has the signing that was scheduled there). But there have already been snippets from an interview with Michael and David in SFX magazine floating around (along with another article in Radio Times that has invoked the ire of much of the fandom). Also, with any luck, you've been on Twitter today, because our Michael seems to have returned to form with a vengeance. His header photo is now one of the GO 2 photos of Aziraphale and Crowley:
Tumblr media
And he's been tweeting up a gloriously chaotic storm this evening, after months and months of silence (and probably being locked up in Neil's basement):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My guess is that whatever kept Michael from talking before now--probably an NDA, per the contract he signed for the second season--has expired, and now he's coming out swinging. I've previously talked about the kinds of things Michael tweeted when the first season came out, but if you weren't here for that, it was basically a level of feral that he seemed to strive to surpass with every successive tweet. Given how much has happened since then, I think we are in for fandom-breaking tweets the likes of which probably go far beyond what any of us have imagined.
And--perhaps best of all--we do have one confirmed talk show appearance with Michael and David, on the One Show on BBC 2 tomorrow! (I've gotten an intriguing Anon about that as well, which I will be answering shortly.) So take heart, Anon, for all is undoubtedly not lost. It's likely that these interviews were planned well in advance, which means there could also be more interviews still to come. This press tour may not have the breadth and scope of the first season, but if Michael and David together, it's more than guaranteed to be something special.
I hope this has lifted your spirits some, Anon. Thank you for writing in! xx

Tumblr media
I was a little confused when I ran across this tweet so I did a little digging around because this is has a ripe scent of shit on it.
And found this:
Tumblr media
Now I don't feel bad posting this with the username because this user got banned from twitter pretty close to the time period they posted this tweet.
Tumblr media
I had to use the wayback machine to check the account but it looks like it was banned back in 2019 if I'm reading it correctly.
Tumblr media
That in itself isn't hard. Shit, I got banned from twitter but it was because I kept telling nazis I love to fuck their mothers and enjoyed sending them furry porn. If they were going to act like giant cocks I just assumed they wanted to see them.
This one user made this horrible tweet, then pretty soon after gets banned from twitter and it doesn't look like they went back to the fandom after the fallout. I wont be posting a link to it to stop stupid fucks like ya'll from harassing the user further but I did find a secondary account from this user and I'm 98% sure it's them and after having gone through the account I can say with very little uncertainty that this user is no longer a reylo.
This isn't the first rodeo with this user though as simply typing in their unsername and 'drama' into google brings up a few interesting articles and them being an absolute fucking frothing cunt isn't new behavior. You see, the reylo fandom isn't very big and because of that we're pretty transparent on who is who in this space and is actually very good at self policing. People in the fandom who say shit like this get shoved out of it pretty fucking fast and I've been here for over 7 years so I've seen my fair share of shitty reylos getting told to fuck off.
Fuck me, I've told a few shitty reylos to fuck off.
I'm a furry first and foremost, I got no fucking bones against telling racist pieces of shit in my fandom to kindly dick off into the fifth level of hell as I ain't a fucking stranger to assholes in my fandom spaces and the importance of telling them to fucking leave.
So I'm fucking baffled how you take one tweet, from one user who has long since been removed from this fandom as this tweet was made back in 2019, 4 whole fucking years ago, and are using it as your one way ticket of proof that all reylos are racists?
You do understand the one person doing a bad thing in a fandom does not automatically mean the entire fandom is trash, right? Just because there is one child molester in the LGBQT communities Does Not Fucking Mean every one of it's members are now child molesters. That's not how the fucking works.
Just because there is one nazi in the furry fandom Does Not Fucking Mean the entire fandom are nazis. I fucking hate nazis and I love to tell them they're not fucking welcome in my fandom.
Tumblr media
Just because there are
well
known
and
documented
racist
in the Star Wars fandom, Does Not Mean every Star Wars fan is a fucking racist you daffy fuck.
Just because one reylo says racist shit DOES NOT FUCKING MEAN all of them are racist for fuck's sake.
And by the looks of it, this cunt ain't even in this fucking fandom anymore.
So again, are you or are you not able to understand one user does not dictate the worth of an entire fucking fandom? We're not a fucking hive mind mate, we can't control what every person in this fucking fandom says, but we can and have reacted promptly in telling the shit ones to fucking leave.
Or are you going to continue acting like a fucking child @reylossaidwhat ?
This is your fucking choice. And if you're going to act like a fucking twat in this tag, well I'm going to have to ask you the same fucking thing I ask every festering twat who shows up here to do nothing but stir shit and that is to fucking leave.

funny how you had no problems when anons were going to syd to call her cheap and say they were shitting on content makers but when someone else says that gifs can be overpriced now you agree with it? just shows how little your words means.
anon, are you okay?? because this obsession you have with me and this nonexistent rivalry or mutual hate relationship with rptsyd is really getting so old.
i'm assuming you read mcthsman's response to that ask about gif packs being paid for?? they brought up a lot of great points i never considered, especially about underused fcoc and how USD prices might translate as higher in other currencies. they did a great job explaining their viewpoint on this matter and i agree with what they're saying. if the rpc has a desire to bring more diversity into writing, i do believe that those resources should be accessible to the public without a paywall, especially when they're not popular fcs that pretty much almost every gif maker has made packs of.
that said, i don't mind gif makers charging for their efforts in creating and editing resources for like private commissions. or i saw another blog mention donation links or patreon as more accessible ways for those who can't spare $20+ for gifs we can't make ourselves and want to use. and i personally don't mind paying creators for their time and effort on what i think is a fair price. not everyone in the rpc is rich. i work two jobs myself to make ends meet and have a little extra spending money i can save for donations and things like that so i have no complaints on my end.
syd did talk about some packs being overpriced (15$ for 250 gifs if i remember correctly) and also mentioned how they've paid or donated more than that. they also admitted themselves that if the rpc thought that was a fair price then they didn't mind it being a "broke me" thing. one of my tag responses to an ask about that basically shared a similar sentiment in that i understood not everyone can pay that much for gifs when we all have real life responsibilities like rent/mortgages, groceries, utilities, medical bills, vet bills, etc.
there was nothing mentioned from syd then like what mcthsman is saying now about underused faces of color blocked from the majority of the rpc behind a paywall, which is a pretty significant issue i didn't realize was happening until i saw it in their post and it is something i feel should be talked about.
this isn't the first anon i've received on a subject that snaps at me about what i've said or not said or what syd's said. not everything i talk about or answer has to do with syd unless she's explicitly mentioned and whatever you think my feelings are towards them. i have them blocked because i didn't like their content and i didn't agree with them continuing to be so hateful towards strangers on the internet who felt they had to make a public apology on this site like they're a celebrity on twitter. the fact that you're using this pretty significant topic of discussion as a means to stir some pot for... i don't even know your objective here. probably so syd has more to talk about on their blog idk. it's sad and embarrassing. it clearly shows you don't care about this issue at all and you're trying to make this personal for your own drama of the week.
you can keep sending me anons about syd cause i won't be answering them any more. and the ones i do continue receiving i will block your ip address to prevent any more coming into my inbox.
hope you understand!! 💓

Final Fantasy VII Remake is garbage
And here's why (7:57:47) Totally not inspired by Hbomberguy Note : this is a repost of my twitter post with a few fixes here and there.
Chapter 1: The Overdrive-Nomurism Cosmo Nevismitical.
Like every European who didn't bought games from Japan or the US, FF 7 was my very first step in the FF franchise. It is a very important game for me, a game that my best friend allowed me to play because he lent me his PS1 with most of his games.
First things first : I have 0 problems with the "timeline cross" thing, despite it being a very Nomura thing. I actually like it. I also like the visuals and the much improved writing of the characters (in most situations, sadly this too isn't great for reasons I'll tackle later).
FF 7 R is sadly a victim of what I call the Overdrive-Nomurism Cosmo Nevismitical. Or in human language, a "Tetsuya Nomura thing". Why is that, you ask ? Because he always, ALWAYS have to add overly complex terms, UI elements or game designs that goes off the rails. Oh you want to upgrade your weapon ? Open the menu, open the upgrade menu, open the character menu, open the weapon menu, then watch an unskippable cutscene -EVERY SINGLE TIME- to get to a useless 3D scene just to choose upgrades. And that's not all.
if you choose the wrong weapon by mistake, when you get out of the menu, there's another (short) unskippable animation. Then when you choose the right weapon, the animation shows up again because maybe you didn't saw it correctly the first time ! Then you want to upgrade your teammates weapons too ? You have to exit this menu (animation), exit your character weapon menu, go to your teammate weapon menu, open one of their weapon (animation), then you want to do it for their other weapon ? Guess what ? You watch this, every, single, time, for, every, single, weapon.
This is a "Nomurism" to me. Remember the Crystarium from FF XIII ? All this beautiful animations and crystals just for... an incredibly linear upgrade system you have 0 control in and 0 choices other than the one imposed to you. You can't upgrade how you want, follow the stupid line and look at the pretty colors !
It's the equivalent of the moving keys in front of childrens. The Bubsy 3D of UI design. I hear you tell me that UI design isn't Nomura, but he is the game director. He said yes to this (off course he did). Then the other Nomurism is the characters. While I'm ok with most of the main cast, we have to talk about Suchar. I mean Rochey Suchar. I mean Roch. Oh boi.
Side Quest In the french version, Roch is named "Rochey" (and yes, you pronounce it in Rochay), because Roch sounds like "Roche", a roc in french. Just like Torgal in FF 16 is renamed Talghor in the french version, but off course the subtitles keep his name "Torgal" because while they renamed him because of the french comic book "Thorgal", they couldn't be bothered to not butcher the subtitles. I guess it's forbidden to use "Thorgal" in french but it's ok in Japanese and English ? Side quest done, 100 Gils (it's a FF 16 side quest, so off course the rewards sucks)
Rochey (yes, I'll keep the french name, deal with it) is when FF 7 Remake jumped the shark, killed it, vomitted in every orifice of the poor beast, and then took a dump on his poor corpse. This is the moment Cloud shows that he can jump from a bike going full speed, then attack in midair while not losing his speed or air control, go back to his bike with 0 efforts. It's also the moment where Rochey do a 1080° with his bike for no reason aside for Tetsuya Nomura to make another Nomurism. I bet gravity murdered Nomura's family in the past.
I've stated at the start that this post was inspired by the Hbomberguy video essays "This X is Y and here's why" because I love his work and it helps me a lot with my writing (still needs to improve). I know that FF 7 Remake isn't an Immersive Sim game but in Hbomb's Deus Ex Human Revolution video, Warren Spector says "NPCs don't do the cool stuff, players do. You make the player do the cool stuff, NPCs watch the players doing it". It resonate with me everytime I see a character doing impossible things in a cutscene then being stuck in front of a wooden door when the player is given control back.
Chapter 2 : A game design 20 years late
Because of all the horrendous slow movement the player is forced to make in the entirety of the game while in every cutscenes possible, Cloud can jump 10 meters (I'm french), destroy a tank with his hair and fart missiles, but OFF COURSE, a fucking fence thinier than Nomura's braincells is what stops him everytime ! "Oh no, we must find another way, I surely can't slash this fence with the sword from Berserk. I have to find another way. Oh no, a 1 meter gap ! Surely I have to walk slowly over it, I can't jump at all ! What ?! The ground is made of wodden planks ?! QUICK, let's WALK VERY SLOWLY for no reason !
Oh no ! A pile of debris ! I can't jump over it despite the clearly visible space I could just jump over, I have to get on my knees and walk as SLOWLY as possible. To the "It's for loading purposes" crowd, yeah most of the time it is, but sometimes it's just one slow walk after the other ! Like, com'on, I know the visuals are pretty good but until the Shinra Tower, every place is pretty much a hallway with one straight line with a variation you will be forced to take at one point so it's not really "exploration", but just an alternative path you'll be forced to take later. The pacing is all over the place. Speaking of...
Chapter 3 : Pacing : you're doing. It wrong.
Remember how OG FF 7 MIdgar's segment was between 5 to 8 hours depending on how players tackled it ? Since the remake takes entirely place in Midgar, they had to stretch it. And oh boi, the streching is all over the place. The game even makes a FF XIII-ism by telling you that "Yeah, you should totally do the ALL the side quests because that will reward you and you'll gain XP and stuff ! Do it please !". Like, it's not even hiding how badly paced it is.
Doing all the sidequests in Wall Market is horrendous and forced ! It's not "SIDE QUESTS" when you are forced to do it ! A forced multi-part arena, interminable dialogue between the multiple useless "leads" of Wall Market, and having to move from A to B to A all the flippin' time while mostly walking very slow to listen to Aerith or just move in one of the most badly designed town ever saw in a modern Action RPG.
The way back to Sector 7 after Don Corneo is even worse. Every single segments of the game just goes to a stop everytime. OH DAMN MAYBE THE PILLAR IS IN DANGER but oh look ! Ghosts ! Let's have fun with them, the pillar isn't a big deal after all !
Part 2 coming soon after for readability sake.
EDIT : Here's part 2 !

I've never asked a question on here; I don't know how it works. I hope I'm doing this right. Feel free to skip this....
Anyway, proceeding as if I am doing this correctly, regarding the gay noble who's supposed to flirt with Jaskier and the confirmation of a character who's supposed to be a prince.
I've been tentatively excited about the idea of a gay noble flirting with Jaskier. Excited because I'd be overjoyed to see a canonical gay romance and because I'd be absolutely delighted to see Jaskier fall in love with someone who loves him back (I do ship Jaskier with Geralt but I doubt the show will make it canon because it'd piss off the book purists, and I think the way the show will make the most audience members happy is to have Geralt end up with Yennefer and then set up Jaskier with another man [all that said, Geralt/Jaskier/Yennefer is my OT3 but that would require Netflix being brave enough to allow polyamory]). Let the bard be happy!
However, I've been nervous that there will be even more bard whump in S3. When Jaskier was talking to Yennefer about people donating to the cause of helping the Elves, it sounded like he thought that they were all, well, donations. Money sent in good will. But then the spymaster dude said he wanted the bard brought in to pay up and.... I'm nervous about how the payment will be collected. My guess is that, most likely, Jaskier will be forced to be a spy but....
And then, because I haven't yet read the books (waiting on my library hold), I went to TV Tropes. I didn't find a Prince Radovid but I did find a King Radovid and he's apparently about as bad as the Emperor. He's apparently just a terrible person. So if the Prince isn't a separate character but is the same character prior to becoming king, I don't see how Jaskier would be interested in this guy.
So, maybe they are separate characters and the Prince is a much better person than his father and he and Jaskier will just be a sweet couple. But I'm nervous. I'm worried the storyline could get pretty dark but maybe I've just read too many hurt/comfort fics.
you're doing wonderfully don't worry lmao!
in terms of jaskier and relationships (and presuming you don't mind book spoilers since you've had a sneaky look yourself, and if you DO mind spoilers ignore all this and send me an angry ask and I'll answer again lmao), I haven't read the books but I'm pretty sure he ends up with a woman in them? and although the writers clearly aren't sticking to the book content (cough season 2 cough) they are definitely going down the yenralt route (terrible a job though they're doing of it) so yeah, geraskefer/geraskier unfortunately is unlikely to be a thing. I am however surprised at just how blatant they've made the unrequited love between jaskier and geralt, even if they haven't actually stated anything there's so much that can be taken that way, so who knows where jaskier is going to end up relationship wise. i would assume, if it's anything at all, that this "relationship" with the prince guy is likely to just be a fling though.
here's where we differ lmao bc I'm a sucker for jaskier whump, I just hate the lack of comfort we get for him 😔 so yeah if they whump him again i need some sort of resolution to it not just "oh hey let's torture the bard and then never mention it again." but anyway, considering the set up of this storyline at the end of s2, and that I think spy!jaskier is a significant plot in the books (?) i'm hopeful that it's going to be a decent story!
Tumblr media
with this information given from twn twitter, and what we already know about jaskier in s3, it's probably reasonable to assume that these two characters are going to be connected, and the "until someone gets hurt" makes me🤞in a vaguely evil jaskier stan sort of way.
but again, this info compared with the book character doesn't seem to add up, especially when taken with the actors "character types" lmao and twn propensity to ignore the books.
basically, we know nothing lmao i'm just speculating and hyperfixating on a random line of a script that may or may not even be real. we move✌️

I've heard the sentai translation of the movie isn't good. Is there a reason why the translator completely butchered the translation especially since Yashiro and Doukemi don't really use the words the translation has?
Please be careful with rumors like that, because usually they come from someone who either doesn’t have a strong grasp of Japanese yet, or who knows nothing about translation, or both. You cannot tell whether a sentence was correctly translated or not by simply comparing the words of the source with the translation. Language is way more complex than that. It’s rare for words in one language to correspond one hundred percent with a word in another language (which is why language teachers push monolingual  dictionaries on you as early as possible). The further apart two languages are the truer this statement becomes.
As translators we translate meaning, not words, because especially in fiction the meaning of a sentence isn’t just the sum of the words it’s made up of. Context is everything. Often there’s meaning implied that someone who doesn’t speak the language well enough simply doesn’t understand. Let me give you a quick example:
Japanese writers love to use quotation marks to emphasize words. Maybe you’ve seen photos of that Japanese airline ad that went something like: Please enjoy our “safe” and “comfortable” flight. See what’s happening here? The person who translated the sentence simply wanted to stress how trustworthy this airline was, but didn’t know that quotation marks in English are frequently used to express sarcasm. So now the sentence implies the exact opposite of the intended meaning, although the translator tried to stick to the original sentence as closely as possible.
Experienced translators know stuff like this, they know where to cut or add something to avoid confusion. So if the subtitles of the Saezuru movie don’t exactly match up with the words said in Japanese, that is not a sign of a bad translation. Quite the opposite actually, because it tells me that the translator paraphrased stuff to make the dialogue flow naturally in English. Which is good, because that way you can focus on the story and don’t have to pause the movie every few seconds because your brain needs time to parse some weirdly phrased English. (Because that’s what you’ll get if you try to translate too literally.)
Translating subtitles is also extra difficult because you have a character limit for each line (and a two-line limit I think). So sometimes less important stuff has to go. That’s not ideal, but a) all the important information is still there, and b) it helps you to enjoy the movie better, because watching and reading at the same time is hard. Blaming translators for stuff like this is pointless, because it’s nothing they have any control over.
So, although I haven’t watched the Sentai movie (because I can’t access it from Japan), I’m 99% sure that the translator did not “butcher” the translation. Everything I’ve seen so far from the trailer and screenshots looks rock-solid! I also follow the translator on twitter where he wrote that Saezuru has “some of the best written and most fun dialogue I’ve had the privilege of translating”. That doesn’t sound like the standard promo talk, if you ask me. He also lives in Japan, is raising a family here and lives in the countryside where there’s hardly if any other English speakers around, so I can assure you that he knows his Japanese.
Tl,dr: Please don’t blindly believe randos on twitter who complain about the translation of their favorite show, or who throw around words like “butchered” when they don’t even know what they’re talking about. Language is complex and translators are professional language geeks who know what they’re doing. Most of the time they’re fans, too. And more than anything they’re humans who also make mistakes sometimes, so if you think you found one, be polite about it, but also consider that maybe your Japanese isn’t at a point yet where you can see why the translator chose a certain translation. Nobody is out there to ruin your favorite media on purpose, so chances are the translator did the best they could under the given circumstances (which usually means little pay and little time).
If you’re still not convinced that there’s probably nothing wrong with the subtitles of the movie, feel free to send me examples of “butchered” translations, and I’ll try to shed some light on why the translator chose the line in question. And now I’ll dive back under my pile of work, so I can hopefully reply to some more questions in February. Cheers!

It's always so funny when people discover George's junior series achievements and are surprised by it... you all thought Mercedes just signed some random dude from Williams?? 😭😭
#georges junior career is critically underrated come and fight me on this one#he gets less attention than the 2018 f2 2nd place just saying
Honestly this is such a mood. especially the bit about the 2018 f2 second place. admittedly that particular driver was one of my favourites when I first got into the sport through DTS and now I can really don't like him. He just gives me the ick, and his tag is muted on here and I cannot stand his teams obsession with him (or the wider media & fans) but yeah is talented, has some impressive results in F1 and junior career (some argue better than George) and is one of the favourites for a WDC in the future.
I am completely naive in how the junior categories work - I literally understand that they start of carting, and then some end up in F2? idk lol but I was looking at George's yesterday on Wikipedia and it was impressive and I also read a thread the other day on twitter that said the was only apparently only beat by Nyck de Vries in his entire junior career, and I wonder if that followed him through to F1 (Yes he had an injured Robert and Nicholas did beat him twice towards the end but I think he'd given up once he got his Mercedes contract and I don't blame him)
So many people are calling him overated and I'm like what?! The British media is too busy sucking up to 2018 F2 Second place man. I doubt he will beat Lewis unless the latter has a stinker of a season but I hope GR can be consistent and be up there and near enough Lewis to show what he can do and hopefully challenge for a title if the car is capable of it.
PS. apologies for the essay, I have a lot of feelings evidently.
Oh anon, you are correct on many things here 👀 Yeah Norris was a favorite of mine too but ultimately his own behaviour, his team and fans mostly put me off. He's talented, no doubt but I've met people who were surprised Norris didn't win the 2018 f2 championship, with how much he is hyped.
You know what was worse? Silverstone 2019, no one mentioned George. He and Williams alone talked about his home race, most people otherwise ignored it. End of the year rookie voting for fans? If I remember correctly, George barely scraped 11% and people were surprised about his existence 💀
British media bias didn't exist for George until Mercedes came into the play. People didn't bother with him, he was at the back, his skill wasn't much worth because he only drove against an injured Robert and a pay driver Nicky - completely ignoring the fact that the two were still putting out stable and good results. So yeah, George only got more popular with Sakhir because people were starting to hope he beats Lewis. Which isn't going to happen, let's be honest. George can put out stable results and deliver but I doubt he's ready to beat Lewis, some time and learning and he will win a wdc for sure 👀
As for junior categories, I don't know who beat George but he definitely raced against Nyck. It could be true, I just don't know it, sorry 😅 and yes, they start with karting before switching to single seaters. Most start with regional formula before moving up to f4, then f3 and f2 before jumping maybe into f1!!

We collected questions for the members from fans on Twitter from 2016.12.30 to 2017.1.13. We handpicked some questions from the bunch and answered them!
Which song hypes you up the most live?
Teru&Kid'z: Monochrome Effector!
Kid'z: I have so much fun playing it that I burst out laughing.
Nob: Probably Black Rail. Because it's the first song I have a bass solo in.
Hiro: Love Letter or Monochrome Effector. Love Letter is a ballad that isn't too heavy, it's just right. There's a J-pop feel to it that gently touches the hearts of the Japanese.
The line "Nothing is impossible, so you're not going to give up, right?" from Black Rail has helped me several times. Do you have a favorite lyric or a line you're emotionally attached to from a MFS song?
Hiro: I don't remember which song I used it in first, but I've come to like using the phrase "fall apart", and I've used it a couple of times after that in other songs.
Kid'z: I was just working on Tomorrowland and The Puzzle when I joined the band. They left a mark on me.
Teru: I love the line "I must say it, even though it won't reach you" from Still.
Nob: It's Saishuukai STORY for me. It's the first song that Hiro worked on the backbone of, and I think it was a turning point for him. It made an impact on me and made me feel that he was out there to win.
When did you decide to play music seriously?
Hiro: I started thinking about it and acting on it on my first year in high school, but it wasn't until my third year that it started to take shape.
Teru: I thought about it seriously probably on my third year in high school. When I was deciding on what course to take after graduation.
Nob: While at my job. When I was still working as a painter, I was coating a wall when I suddenly thought, ".....What the hell am I doing?" After that, I immediately said, "I quit." I met Sho-kun about three days later.
Kid'z: I started playing the drums when I was 3, but I think I thought about doing it for a living when I was in middle school or high school... But when I visited my parents' house the other day, I saw that I had written "I'll go to Tokyo and become a drummer" in my grade school yearbook. It came true, I thought (laughs).
A question for Hiro. Since Hiro was at the core of making the album ANTITHESE, what do you look for in terms of guitar, bass, and drums respectively?
Hiro: "Overwhelming personality". For each part, how will you rearrange the songs I made with only the basic chord progression and melody? How well do you think it will synchronize with my image? Those are what I'm looking for.
When you toured around the 47 prefectures last year, was there a place where you thought, "I want to live here~"? Also, is there another country you would want to live in?
Teru&Kid'z: Okinawa!!
Kid'z: Actually, I flew there about a week before the show. I've always loved that place, so I had a great time.
Teru: If we're talking about a country to live in, Japan is nice.
Kid'z: I think so too. To tell you the truth, I'm quite the clean freak (laughs), so if it's not as clean as Japan then it's probably not for me.
Nob: Fukuoka, Sapporo. The food is delicious! And Osaka. Its liveliness is amazing. I'm really dull (laughs) and I spend my time quietly during my off days, but when I'm not doing that I want to be in a place that's still bustling with people until midnight. Foreign countries are scary.
Hiro: I think Osaka and Fukuoka are good too. If we're talking about another country, America.
What do you always do before a show?
Hiro: Doing a simulation on the day of the show is a must.
Kid'z: Stretching, mental preparation in a place with no people.
Teru: During the 47-Prefecture Tour, Hiro would slap me on the back before every show. It somehow gives me motivation.
Nob: I walk around the area all the time. Like what a track and field athlete does before the real deal. I do it on instinct to boost my spirits.
What do you think is the coolest thing about each member?
Teru: Hiro's voice, Nob's moustache, Kid'z' nose.
Kid'z: When Hiro sings, when Nob plays the bass, when Teru plays the guitar (laughs). Everyone's at their coolest when they're performing.
Nob: Hiro's face. Kid'z when he's playing the drums, and maybe how he looks like when he's driving. As for Teru... He would casually say a few striking words from time to time. Whenever that happens, I think "This guy's really solid".
Hiro: (thinks) Nothing really... Seriously nothing (laughs).
If you had a time machine, which would you rather visit, the past or the future? Also, what would you do there?
Teru: Future. I wanna see what I'll be doing 30 years from now.
Kid'z: Exactly the same as Teru. I want to ask my future self what it's like.
Nob: It's the past for me. I want to restart my life all over again, or to try living a different life.
Hiro: I'd choose the past too. It'd be nice to go back to the 90s, for instance, when music was selling like hotcakes, and see how well my own music would fare in that era.
A question for Teru. During the 47-Prefecture Tour, where do you think you had your best MC?
Teru: Well, Niigata left an impression on me. If I remember correctly, Kid'z was talking about things that didn't make sense during the MC, and I got seriously angry. That was funny, but it was in no way my best MC.
Please tell us your aspirations for this year!
Teru: I decide to take on a new challenge every year. Anything would be fine, even something small.
Kid'z: To do my best without overdoing things, probably. Because I pushed myself too hard last year (laughs).
Nob: I want to get rid of some neck fat, chisel my abs and train my body. And I want to be featured on a musical instrument magazine like Bass Magazine.
Hiro: To take things slow but get things done. I want to add more intensity to my current pace this year.
What's one song that changed your life?
Teru: For me, it's Ozzy Osbourne's I Want To Change The World. I heard the song while my dad was watching Ozzy's DVD and thought, "How cool, I want to start playing the guitar!"
Nob: Sigur Rós' GIósóli. The video also made an impact on me.
Kid'z: One by B'z. I've always loved B'z, but that song and its lyrics just hit me differently.
Hiro: I don't know if it changed my life, but I felt like my values have changed since I listened to TK from Ling tosite Sigure's music. It made me see things from his point of view, made me ponder on the meaning of the lyrics and interpret them myself, and had me yearning for approval and self-confidence. It was at that moment when I realized that there are ways of making this kind of music, and that I had another option in life.

[id: several tweets by twitter user Oweeeeeendennis @ OweeeeeenDennis.
"If you've noticed an uptick in cartoon show creators 'biting the hand that feeds' there's a reason for that:
Animation is more popular than it's ever been, the people who make it know that, yet the companies that produce it don't and continue to act as though it's lesser.
The people making the animation are acting professionally, keeping the secrets these massive companies ask us to keep and going along with their bizarre requests, while they don't hold themselves to the same standard or offer support.
So animated show creators have now started gaining their own fans. Fans who follow the people who make the show, not the company. It's led to a democratization of making animated shows, something that has never happened before.
Many companies still act like they can treat show runners like it's the 90's, where they can do anything and there won't be a public stink about it. That's just not the way it is anymore.
There are also no protections in the animation union for show creators beyond basic union protections, even though show creators are asked to do WAY more than they've ever been asked to do.
One example I can think of is that show creators are often asked to use their personal social media to promote the brand. Companies look at show creator follower counts when thinking about green lighting a show because they view it as a way to get free advertising.
There's a LOT of shit that show runners put up with that is, frankly, incredibly unprofessional. Stuff we're not allowed to talk about because it would reflect poorly on a billion dollar company, be mildly embarrassing, and mean they'd have to take SOME kind of effort to fix it.
The deal is supposed to be "I give you the rights to this IP I've created and I work on it according to your rules for several years of my life. In return you promote it, make sure it's presented correctly, and get 90% of the products.
If studios can't do that, what's the point?"
Responding to another tweet that reads "# down with the suits, the higher ups disappoint us once again, # amphibia," the same user writes:
"Here's the issue: they get to hide behind being 'higher ups.'
No one knows their names, but everyone knows ours, so they don't personally take any of the heat for their actions. The crew end up being the ones trying to calm down a situation based on 'higher up's' decisions.
So the crew, who has never been trained in PR, is the one who has to go out there and be like 'uh it's ok guys!' or something. Which leads to confusion because none of us are trained to do that and people say the 'wrong things' and then we get in trouble AGAIN. It's such a mess."
Responding to a tweet that reads "I genuinely, wholeheartedly want to know what can actually reasonably be done - both from the creators and from us - for industry change to be demanded," the same user writes:
"Companies are just a mass of people with a logo.
Don't support companies, support the people who make things.
That shifts the public power to the creators, not the companies. This means that a creator will have more leverage to get the support they need on their project.
Those people can work for companies, and it often means you have to pay the company, but don't have brand loyalty. A brand isn't a person who has a family and needs to pay bills, it's just a logo that can be puppeted by anyone voted in by a board of executives."
In response to tweets by this user, a different user Olan Rogers @ OlanRogers, with a verified symbol, writes:
"I genuinely would love to see more shows from you, that being said I would delete those tweets. These are all things that should be brought up through the Animation Guild which in my opinion needs to be overhauled because of how much more popular animation is becoming.
The Animation Guild is operating like it's the 90s and like an animation boom isn't happening. I can't think of one thing they've done for me besides confusing health care. You aren't wrong but tweeting these things makes you personally vulnerable because who knows who follows you."
Oweeeeeendennis responds:
"yeeeeeeah. I'm probably gonna do that now, then go clean my room. I hate everything."
Olan Rogers responds:
"😂I'll say this if you ever want to take these concerns to the Animation guild, I'm in. I think you would find a lot of creators would be in and I would bet each have countless stories that would back up all of what you said up."
Oweeeeeendennis writes two more tweets outside that exchange:
"Anyway, screenshot those tweets while you can, cause I'll probably delete them tonight after I'm like 'oh shit, my job!'
Too late!
@ OlanRogers is right. I'm going to focus this attitude into the union and try to advocate for better rights for everyone overall."
Finally, there is a meme of a man with dominoes of increasing size. The smallest domino is labeled "Disney delays the amphibia season 2 finale 10 hours before it airs". The largest domino is labeled "western cartoon creators unionize"
