Miracle Meeting

Summary: It’s the first of many strange meetings you’ve yet to come across. As you feel you’ve hit rock bottom, someone comes along to give you an opportunity. Feeling like you have no other choice, you pack a bag and head to a town known as Old Midev, the place where your adventures will soon begin.

They say that despite the appearance of calm surfaces, you should always be aware of the danger of currents churning just beneath them. There’s a point people warn you about, for once you drift too far from shore, there’s a good chance you’ll never be able to come back, even for all your fights and struggles. The best thing for you to do at that point is move with the flow, all the better to keep your head above water. Is that what your life had come to at this point? Had you been swept along by unseen forces, working to barely keep afloat? 

A little raindrop made its way down the glass pane, weaving and shifting past other stagnant dots of moisture. The trail it left formed small beads before it drifted down too far, disappearing from view. The locomotive ticked and churned along its path, unaffected by the storm outside. You sighed, changing your posture after having sat in your current one too long. Everything in your body was stiff, your muscles were sore, but most of all you were undeniably nervous. Was this a mistake? You wondered. Had it been too good to be true? But at this point...was there a better alternative? In all honesty, your life was at a low point. A very low point. Due to circumstances beyond your control, you’d lost your job, been told you had to find a new place to live by the next month, and finding any sort of stability financially, mentally, or otherwise seemed nigh on impossible. 

That was, till about two days ago. Trying to scrounge up any semblance of peace, you’d taken a trip to a local park. Disheveled, heartbroken, you sat on a bench, pondering if soon you’d have to sleep on this very seat in the near future. At that point, it seemed like a very real possibility. Little kids threw balls at each other and screamed in joy, the birds around you sang without a care. Everyone else looked happy. Everyone else didn’t seem to struggle as you did. And while it seemed silly, you couldn’t help but seem envious of everything. Envious of the adults who seemed to have everything together. Envious of the free birds. Even envious of the little flowers planted in their permanent little pots. 

“Mind if I sit here?” A gentle voice snapped you out of your thoughts, some worry racing through your mind, wondering if the stranger had noticed how bitterly you watched the passersby. The man was a kind looking soul; bright blue eyes, dark-toned skin, well-kept clothes, a shining smile on his attractive features. A soft breeze ruffled his curly brown hair. He pulled his ivory jacket closer around him, adjusting the blue scarf around his neck, the ends of the fabric billowing behind his shoulders. Something about him struck you as otherworldly, but you couldn’t place it. 

Aware of the way you looked compared to him, you scooted a little closer to the edge of the bench, straightening your own clothes in an attempt to make your hoodie and sweatpants a bit more presentable. “Uh...sure…” 

As he sat down, he thanked you only to apologize right after. “I’m sorry, I just had a feeling...maybe you could use some company.” Had you really looked that pathetic? Like a wounded animal left on the side of the road and calling out for help? You refrained from making a comment, hunching your shoulders instead. The stranger tilted his head at you, then lifted his chin to observe the puffy clouds drift up above your heads. “A beautiful day,” he expressed. “Don’t you think?” Really? Out of everything that could’ve possibly happened today, a charming yet odd stranger basically asked how you thought the weather was? Was it a good day? Was today, a day you’d been handed two rejected applications, a day you’d been hunting for anyone to take you in, a day you felt as if nothing could get worse, a good day? “It doesn’t have to be a good day,” he started, speaking as if he’d directly read your thoughts, “For it to be a beautiful one.” The breath in your lungs stopped for a moment as you observed him with semi-wide eyes. How did he…? The man simply shot you a sympathetic grin. “Ah, sorry for the assumptions. It’s just, in my line of work, you tend to see a lot of people sport the same expression. I couldn’t help but notice it on you when I passed by.” 

Some heat poured into your cheeks. So you had been that easy to read. A small family walked by in front of you, one of the younger children running too far ahead. Their guardians hurriedly reminded them not to go too far. Once they passed, you straightened your slouched posture, taking a deep breath. “In your line of work?” 

“I’m a doctor,” he explained. 

“Ah…” How much despair had he seen, how many grief-stricken people had left such an impression on him that he could simply tell how someone was feeling just by their face? Was he an empath or just observant? It doesn’t have to be a good day for it to be a beautiful one, he’d said. The leaves off the trees shone different shades of green, some shifting to warm hues in preparation for the approaching autumn, rustling under the beams of sun branching out from behind the clouds that rolled past the grey-blue sky. The air was crisp enough for jackets, but not yet cold enough for coats. You could smell the aroma of freshly baked goods, the air carrying the scent from the bakery just across the street. It was...rather stunning. “I’m going to be homeless.” The truth slipped out of you before you could process even moving your lips. With it, your emotions followed, tears streaming down your cheeks. “Everything I’ve done, everything I’ve been working towards has failed. My efforts amount--they amount to nothing! I don’t even know where to go or-or what to do anymore.” A choked back sob made your voice waver. “I’m sorry...I don’t even know you, I--I’m sorry. I don’t know why I just shared all that with a stranger.” The tears slowly began to dry as you brushed them away with the back of your hand. 

“Dr. Matthews,” he stated. “But you can call me Simeon.” 

You blinked, sniffling a little as you glanced quizzically at him. “Huh?” 

He rummaged for a few things in the confines of his pockets. With an outstretched hand, he offered you two things. One, a tissue, something you accepted with more than a little sheepishness as you dabbed the end of your nose with it. The second was a business card. It was a white and rather professional looking little paper with gold lettering. The name and title ‘Dr. Simeon Matthews’ was printed on the front, along with his email, business phone number, and website address. “Now I’m not a total stranger.” He smiled earnestly, and something about the idea of a doctor easily convinced that simply sharing a name would immediately make you acquaintances let a bubble of amusement float to the top of your mind. 

“Simeon?” You repeated, and he nodded to confirm you’d gotten it right. The vowels slid past your lips. “It’s a nice name.” 

He beamed at the compliment. “Thank you.” His long legs shifted and his hands fidgeted in his lap as he struggled with an internal thought. “Tell me...have you heard of Old Midev?”  You hadn’t. In fact, you couldn’t even tell what he was referring to by name alone. A book? A show? An illness? “It’s a little old town quite a ways from here, but it’s where I grew up. It’s so small most maps don’t even bother displaying it,” he chuckled. Homesickness stood out behind his eyes, his smile a lonely one. “It’s been quite a while since I’ve been home...Do you like house-sitting?” His question left you stunned, and a pit formed in your stomach. You could connect the dots. Was he inferring what you thought he was? 

“Simeon!” A high voice turned both your heads. A child about the age of ten or twelve was awkwardly running towards the bench with a little plastic container in his hands. Golden hair bobbed across his forehead as he stood before the man and presented the container; a little cupcake with pink frosting and pearl-like sprinkles dwelled inside. From under the kid’s blue jacket sleeves, you spotted bandages as well as a medical bracelet covering his wrists. “I managed to get one! They let me watch them make it fresh! Doesn’t it look delicious?” 

“It looks amazing, Luke!” Simeon addressed the pale child. “But remember what I told you about running?” 

Luke huffed and raised his nose. “I’m old enough to buy this by myself! I can handle running a little.” 

“I just want to be cautious is all,” Simeon assured him. The doctor used a hand to gesture towards the kid. “This is Luke, he’s a patient of mine.” Your heart quickly sank. It explained the bracelet, why Luke looked too pale, why his bright tufts seemed so thin. Simeon noticed your face quickly drain, and he playfully ruffled Luke’s hair. “He’s been a fighter, but it’ll end up being moot if you waste all your energy running around like a rabid chihuahua!” 

Luke, affronted, swatted Simeon’s hand away and fixed the stray strands. “I’m not a chihuahua!” There was fire in him yet. He pulled the cupcake box closer to his chest like he had to protect it. His sweet innocence and their wholesome dynamic let a smile curl across your face, something that hadn’t happened to you for a while. “Who’s your friend, Simeon?” 

The man hesitated. He didn’t know how to explain that you two had literally just met, and your name had yet to be announced. He’d probably refrained from asking in the event it would make you uncomfortable. You drifted your sight between the two of them, the sense of unease devoid from your intuition. Usually you could trust your gut on sketchy strangers. The two of them felt warm, safe, strangely familiar, like you’d been fated to cross paths. Some faith in your humanity was restored, and as you looked at Luke, you remembered that other people were suffering too. If he could, you too could fight a little longer. With a little sigh, you let some of the heavy weight of hopelessness slide off your shoulders, and you shared your name. 

And that was simply the beginning of your journey. A meeting of miracles. 

Simeon had asked you again how you felt about house-sitting, and before he took off with Luke, he encouraged you to give the number on his card a call once you’d thought it over. Now here you were, on a train to this town of his, doing something potentially reckless. Old Midev...small alright. After you’d double checked Simeon’s doctorate claims, you’d searched this town. It did exist, but it took you a while to find it. For the longest time, the only result that would show up were some crackhead conspiracy posts on a mystic sea creature written by someone calling themselves The Sorcerer. There was only a lake in that town, nothing really seaworthy about it. Nothing really note-worthy about it, in fact. From the overhead map view, you could see a school, a library, a park, a gym, a grocery store, a few other scattered businesses--basically the bare minimum--and that was it. There were only about 800 people, and even that was slowly declining as residents moved away. But in that town held the potential of some support, a shelter, some hope, at least until you could get back on your own two feet. 

The train buckled a bit, the speed starting to decline. You picked your head up, eyes heavy as you’d almost begun to nod off. Only now did your heart begin to pound. New people. A new environment. Would you be able to tell people you were basically someone’s charity case? That you were going to be squatting in someone’s empty home till you could sort yourself out? Groaning, you tapped your feet against the floor to get your nerves out. It took about another ten minutes before the train came to a complete stop. The luggage you’d brought with you resided in a single large suitcase in the proper compartment. Everything else you owned you had boxed up and placed in a storage unit in your old city. 

If the station you stepped out onto was a testament to what the town was like, you could see that it truly lived up to the name Old Midev. The train had pulled next to the only station in town. It almost seemed as if the station itself was built before the rails, and they conveniently converted it into a station as an afterthought. It looked more like a barn than anything. A little red wooden building with rusty red walls and white trim that had begun to chip and grey with time. The platform was decorated with log benches, carved animal statues, and barrels that had been cut in half to serve as flower planters. There was a nice little overhead to keep people--and you--from standing out in open weather. Even though it was still raining, it had lessened to a light sprinkle. As you tried to move, your luggage quickly got snagged on a nail sticking out from the creaking floorboards underneath you. With a tug, you got it free. The pistons to the train hissed as they prepared to shut the doors behind you. It’s your last chance to turn around. It’ll be hard to get out of this if you stay, you told yourself. And yet you stood your ground, watching the train start to chug away. 

Simeon had given you some insight into a few things before he’d so graciously purchased your ticket for you. One, he told you that you were welcome to stay as long as you needed. Yes, this town housed his home, and yet his work had him traveling constantly, so there was no one there to look after it. Two, his extra set of keys was in a compartment behind a wall plaque with a proverb on it. And three, a friend of his would be waiting at the station when you arrived to help take you to the house you’d be staying at. Only...you were seemingly the only living soul around. Swiveling your head to observe the area around you, you only further confirmed this. There was no one else here. No one was sitting down, no one was inside the building when you peeked in the windows. Being alone in...such an unfamiliar place...out in the middle of nowhere. Your blood started to run cold. Should you have done more background checks on Simeon? Yes, there was a website and a secretary and Luke and everything...but maybe it had all been staged! Was it all fake? Did you make a mistake? What were you even doing hopping on a train to come all the way out here?! Sure you had joked about dropping your entire life to move to a desolate place and change the way you lived, but you never thought it would be this frightening in the moment!

“Hey.” The monotone voice of someone behind you made you shout. You quickly turned, placing your suitcase in front of you in the event you needed to use it as a shield. You’d brought a self defense keychain with you and hidden it in your sleeve. Up until now, you hadn’t had to use it yet...but you would if you were desperate. There before you, occupying the space you could’ve sworn was empty, was a man; ripped jeans, dark circles under his eyes about as dark as the large sweatshirt he was wearing. Floppy purple hair with frosted ends hovered in front of his vision. He had a chain around his neck, a dirty look across his face, and a strange intense stance. You were dead. You knew it. Somehow you’d been fooled into coming here, and now you were about to be killed. “Are you the person Simeon sent?” 

Oh...was this the friend Simeon had talked about? Your nerves were still on edge, but you found it a little easier to breathe. “Y-yes...are you…” 

“Yeah. He sent me here to pick you up. I’m kinda late, I-” He was interrupted by his own large yawn. “I overslept. But it’s whatever.” Wasn’t it already dipping into the late afternoon? There was still some trepidation inside you, and he must’ve finally noticed your defensive stance. “Oh. Simeon told me to say ‘seraph’...I think it was the word.”  Seraph had been Simeon’s little safety measure to try and ease your anxiety and to prove who to trust. It was such a random little word, you’d doubted anyone could come up with it without being told by Simeon first. Your shoulders loosened a bit. Although, still...not to stereotype...but you found it interesting that a character like Simeon would be friends with someone like...this person before you. He appeared as if he’d torn up his entire wardrobe with a set of knives and yet looked entirely comfortable about it. Like...soft-emo-core. And yet their clashing attire wasn’t what bothered you...it was Simeon’s angelic nature vs...this person’s apathetic attitude. Well, who were you to judge? Simeon just always threw more surprises at you. 

“Yeah. That was the word.” You sighed and rubbed the back of your neck. “Thanks for coming to pick me up. I wouldn’t know left from right here.” 

His blank face managed a little laugh. “Most people don’t. Anyway, come on, my brother has the car running.” He already started walking off, not even bothered to check to make sure you were following. You muttered some curses in your head before dragging your heavy suitcase behind you, trying not to trip on the uneven platform. 

“Your brother?” 

“Yeah, I don’t like driving,” he replied, kicking a few stray rocks as he hopped off the platform and onto an unpaved road. A large four-door red pickup truck was idling a few feet ahead. Through the darkened window, you could see another man--the brother, you pieced together--eating behind the wheel. You grimaced. Getting inside a vehicle with two people you didn’t know was exactly the sort of thing you’d been told not to ever do. The one time your escort actually looked back was the time you’d hesitated. “What,” he smirked. “You think we’re going to murder you or something?” 

You stopped in your tracks. “Maybe! I don’t know you!” Your accusatory tone came out of nowhere. “You still...Simeon told me the name of the person coming to get me. You haven’t told me your name.” 

He rolled his eyes and opened his mouth. Even if he’d told you, you weren’t sure you'd fully believe him. The main factor that contributed to some trust was all thanks to the person who rolled down the window of the truck, swallowing another handful of fries. “Belphie! Why didn’t you help them with their suitcase?” The name was right. Simeon had told you the person coming to get you would’ve been called Belphie. Strange name. Much like the password, you doubted anyone would’ve just made up a name like that on the spot. 

“Eh. I didn’t feel like it. It looks heavy,” Belphie admitted. You almost glared at him. What is with this guy?

The other man opened the door and stepped out of the truck. He was wearing a tracksuit. Red jacket and matching crimson pants, both of which had black stripes running vertically up the sides. He was wearing a black shirt underneath, a little bright stain of some sort smudged on his chest, probably some condiment from what he’d been eating. Unlike his brother, he had bright red hair and an expressive face, although his voice shared the same consistent and unwavering deep tone like his sibling. He stepped towards you, almost giving you a heart attack when you realized just how tall and muscular he was. God help any creature that dared to upset him. When he moved his arm in your direction, you felt faint, but then he simply grasped your luggage with one hand and plucked it up from the ground, settling it gently in the bed of the truck. 

He turned on his feet towards you, Belphie slinking away to get into the passenger seat of the car without even offering to help. “You’re MC, right? Simeon told us some about you.” The doctor hadn’t known you for very long, so the ‘some’ must’ve been the whole...rock bottom explanation. He jabbed a thumb over his shoulder to point behind him. “That’s my twin, Belphie.” Twins? They didn’t exactly strike you as such just on an observational standpoint, but it’s not as if twins were always identical. “Sorry about him. He gets grumpy when he’s tired.”

“It’s okay…” You mustered up a polite grin. 

“You can call me Beel.” Beel opened one of the backdoors to the car, quickly clearing the backseat by shoving old takeout bags into one slightly bigger bag before settling it on one spot on the floor, looking a bit proud of his swift cleaning job. “Hop in, MC. Let’s bring you to Old Midev.”

Enginursday: A Beginner's Guide to Sourcing from Alibaba

Alibaba is the Wild West of product sourcing - a freewheeling, international bazaar offering low-cost bulk parts and products that range from the mundane to the, well, bizarre. Here, the risks are high but the potential benefits manifold. You may seek your fortune reselling low-cost goods (or finding low-cost parts for your widget), but you may find yourself flim-flammed, hoodwinked and yes, even bamboozled. But oh, the rush when your diligence pays off!

It seems excited.

I will begin with an important disclaimer: at this stage in my procurement career (and in SparkFun’s history), sourcing from Alibaba is basically the last resort. SparkFun has worked hard over the years to develop a list of trusted vendors. Many of these companies have locally-based representatives, knowledgeable sales contacts and field application engineers we can meet with face-to-face to discuss all our latest needs and quirks. Others are vendors in China, Taiwan and other countries whom we discovered via Alibaba eons ago, and have since built long-standing relationships with.

If you already have a supplier with whom you have an established, trusting relationship, love and cherish them all the days of your life. Understand also that their capabilities may extend far beyond what’s reflected in their catalog or line card. If there’s something specific you need, ask your existing contacts. At the very least, they may be able to provide you with a referral. I also highly recommend ThomasNet as an alternative starting point for finding reliable, quality sources for components, hardware, equipment, you-name-it.

That said, onto the fun. If you’re starting from scratch as we once did, or you simply like to walk on the wild side, you may be ready to plunge into the wacky world of Alibaba. Let’s begin with the search bar.

Don't look at my search history.

This part is pretty straightforward. Here, you can search for parts by keyword or toggle the little arrow to search for particular suppliers. As with any search, you’ll want to find that sweet spot between specificity and generality. It’s also important to know what that thing you’re looking for is called! That seems obvious enough, but keep in mind that there are different synonyms out there for the same type of product (e.g. “coin cell” vs. “button cell”), and businesses in other countries might have different naming conventions than you’re used to.

You can also browse items by market (at left) if you have a vague idea of the type of things you’re looking for and just want to peruse the marketplace. There’s also a new image search feature (the camera icon at the right). As it turns out, you can even search for products based on the current status of your life:

Time to hit the gym!

Once you’ve honed in on a thing you might want to buy in quantity, you’ll see on the product page a handy little pricing scale, info about shipping charges and lead time.

How many horse masks will you require today?

Great, right? Well, ignore it. IGNORE IT ALL. It could be accurate, sure, or it could be that the supplier just put random information in there because honestly-who-really-knows. If you want to know how much the thing costs, ask.

But first, try to learn a little about the supplier by clicking on the supplier name at right and perusing their company page. Alibaba is far less Mos Eisley Cantina-ish than it once was. They have a variety of verifications and certifications to help you sort out the legit from the sketchy, although there’s always some risk regardless. I like to see a high customer satisfaction rate, “Gold Supplier” status (multiple years is always a plus) and a decent rate of response.

Once you’ve achieved that nice, warm, fuzzy feeling, feel free to message away. At the bottom of the page you’ll see the box you can use to send a message to the supplier. I cannot stress enough how important it is to keep this first message as simple as possible. I’ve found that I’m far less likely to get a response if I include multiple questions, customization requests, lists of products, sample inquiries, etc. I know, it’s hard to imagine that somewhere a sales rep is perusing their inbox and smashing that delete button every time a message is more than three sentences long, but there it is. Here is the basic template of what I send:

Dear Mr/Ms [rep name], Hello, this is [name] with [company name]. Please quote me for [quantity] pcs of your [product name or part number]. Thanks and kind regards, [name] [email address]

That’s it! This is not to imply that Alibaba suppliers won’t send you samples, customize their product, give you quotes for multiple pricing tiers and multiple products, discuss terms, etc. This simple first email jus gets the conversation going, and you can feel free to move on to all those subjects and more once the wheel has begun turning. Alibaba has a messenger feature, but I always include my email in the signature of the first message to emphasize that I’m okay with them emailing me directly. Personally, I prefer to communicate this way, but to each their own. If you do include your email, you will eventually get spammed, so be ready. You can also make a “business card” on Alibaba, which includes your contact information, and you can choose whether to share it or not with each message you send.

Yes, there is such a thing as too much squid.

You may find you’re not satisfied with a quote or minimum order quantity (MOQ). $1,400 per ton of giant squid tentacles may be more than you are willing to pay, or perhaps you only require 10 tons of them instead of 25. Again, ask away. Alibaba reps often have room to haggle. If you have other quotes or retail pricing to show them for comparison, go for it. Just don’t be a jerk about it. Consider what you might be able to offer them to make it worth their while.

If an MOQ is higher than you’re willing to commit to, it doesn’t hurt to see if the supplier has some flexibility there, too. Maybe they can lower it if you commit to purchasing multiple different products (giant squid eyeballs?). You might also consider committing to multiple smaller orders spaced out over the course of a year, assuming you’re confident in your volume projections. If you have a slew of questions, I recommend putting them in a numbered list to avoid important details getting lost in a big block of text.

I always request at least one sample before agreeing to purchase an item in quantity. Usually, suppliers with whom you do not have an existing relationship will expect you to pay for the sample, and that’s quite understandable. Sometimes they’ll just request that you cover the shipping. I usually ask them to send an invoice with a PayPal ID/email, but you can also pay directly via Alibaba. It’s important when requesting a sample (as with a full order quantity) to confirm what it is you’ll be receiving before committing to it. Some product pages display multiple products, or have multiple versions of a single product available with varying specs. Requesting a datasheet, manual, or any other supporting documentation is crucial.

This may require some vetting.

Once you’ve received, evaluated and approved a sample, you may be ready to commit to a full order. I won’t dive too far down the rabbit hole of payment terms, but most Alibaba suppliers will expect money up front, often via bank wire transfer (“T/T”) or PayPal, at least for your first order. Be wary of Western Union, as it offers relatively little protection against scams.

Alibaba also offers its own Alibaba Secure Payment platform. I haven’t personally used it for more than small dollar (usually sample) transactions, but it does offer a path for disputing transactions. You will also want to work out your shipping method and terms with the supplier. That is yet another topic that could be a post unto itself.

A final word of caution: be wary of copyright, trademark and patent infringement. Even companies that are generally open source still aren’t exactly thrilled with companies impersonating their brand. It’s one thing to build off an existing design, but it’s another thing entirely to copy it and slap another’s logo on there. Knockoffs tend to hide quality and reliability problems behind the mask of others’ hard work and diligence. And they leave the real companies’ support personnel scrambling to field questions about products that end up having nothing to do with them. So once again, don’t be a jerk.

Moreover, should you choose to be a jerk nonetheless (or inadvertently stumble into jerkhood), customs often stops shipments of knocked off products, and you as a reseller are potentially liable for the things you choose to put on the market. Some violations are harder to spot than others. Did you know you can trademark a vague color combination? Well, neither did we!

Which leads me to another thing: educate yourself on product compliance issues (RoHS, CE, FCC, Prop 65, etc.), export restrictions, etc., or consult with someone who can get you on track in that vein. There’s a whole prairie full of rabbit holes there.

Anyway, if you want to source on Alibaba, just remember the five Ds:

1) Don’t take anything for granted 2) Documentation, documentation, documentation 3) Don’t be a jerk 4) Do do do due diligence 5) Dkeep it simple

Redwoods mean those are the parts where the fog off the coast comes in at night; redwoods condense rain out of fog. What matters in Silicon Valley is not even that.

Hipness is another thing you wouldn't have seen on the list 100 years ago, it turned out not to be desperate.7 To use a purely Web-based applications are an ideal source of revenue.8 An improved algorithm is described in Better Bayesian Filtering. At Viaweb we spent the first six months just writing software. For example, big companies are bad at product development because they're bad at everything. “NEED MONEY FOR BOTOX” reads a neon sign in a post on Alchemy 43’s Instagram page. The rest of the feed looks like that of any typical beauty startup these days: lots of Beyoncé references, lots of soft pastels, lots of pretty young women.

But Alchemy 43 is not a makeup or skin care brand. It’s been dubbed the “Drybar of Botox” and offers customers a more aesthetically pleasing place than a sterile dermatologist’s office or a sketchy Groupon medspa to get Botox and other face treatments. The shops feature curvy, soft pink furniture and white marble countertops. Apparently they even offer you snacks — not a popular amenity at most dermatologist offices.

Like Drybar, the popular chain that offers only blowouts and other dry styling (versus cuts and color like at a full-service salon), Alchemy 43 aims to be really good at one thing. But instead of blowouts, it’s face injectables.

The messaging around Botox and other so-called “minimally invasive” injectables has shifted lately. While it is a potentially dangerous medical treatment, it’s being increasingly marketed as a beauty product, and that marketing is often directed toward younger customers. The rise of Alchemy 43 and a new beauty website launched by Allergan, Botox’s manufacturer, demonstrates an attempt to make needles as commonplace as mascara wands.

More than half of Alchemy 43’s customers probably don’t even have wrinkles yet. Founder Nicci Levy said the biggest surprise after one year in business was learning that more than half of her customers were younger than 35. “They’re very pro-preventive treatments; they’re very pro-getting started early. They’re not ashamed,” she says.

People used to be ashamed of it. Botox was controversial when it launched in 2002. After all, it’s made from a deadly toxin — Botulinum toxin, to be specific. In large doses, it will kill you; in tiny doses delivered via a slim needle, however, it will freeze your facial muscles to temporarily smooth out wrinkles. You have to keep at it every three to six months to maintain the results. There aren’t conclusive studies that getting Botox can “train” muscles and actually prevent wrinkles, but some practitioners, including Levy, say there is anecdotal evidence that this is the case.

Since 2002, use of Botox has increased more than 800 percent, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. And in 2017, minimally invasive treatments, which include things like fillers, lip plumpers, and Botox, were up 2 percent over 2016 levels. Allergan, the company that made Botox the proper-noun-Kleenex of wrinkle reducers, is making a killing: Botox sales were up 14.5 percent in the second quarter of 2018 to $934.5 million, according to CNBC.

But one other piece of data may shed light on why we’re seeing these face injections being sold a bit differently than they used to be. According to the same 2017 ASPS survey, in the 20- to 29-year-old age group, minimally invasive cosmetic procedures were actually down 1 percent compared to the prior year. It’s the only age group where that was the case. Young people might still be leery of things presented in a clinical light and framed as an anti-ager for older people.

One particularly famous person in this age bracket personifies this. Kylie Jenner, 21, made headlines in July when she revealed she was getting rid of her lip fillers. That was the culmination of years of controversy surrounding her getting the lip injections in the first place. Her fillers raised lots of thorny issues about how we think about race and beauty and questions about how young is too young for injections, to name a few.

So despite the strength of the market for injectables overall, there’s obviously still a lot more room for it catch on among younger consumers. Interest this year seems to be perking up in that age group: A representative at RealSelf, a sort of TripAdvisor for aesthetic procedures, says, “The age group where interest in Botox is increasing the fastest is with 18- to 24-year-olds.” That age group is also the one driving the online conversation about beauty on platforms like YouTube and Instagram.

Botox has always been positioned as an aesthetic procedure, and that’s different from what we normally think of as a beauty procedure. Medical aesthetics refer to procedures that require a medical practitioner to administer; they affect your appearance and are not done out of medical necessity. Beauty procedures are relatively more benign treatments like manicures and, yes, blowouts. Medical aesthetics exist in the place between hardcore plastic surgery, with anesthesia and downtime, and a more superficial procedure like getting a blowout.

Which makes Allergan’s new beauty website all the more interesting. Spotlyte, as the company is calling it, looks like a lot of other popular beauty sites out there right now. Images are sprinkled throughout a page featuring a clean layout and a sans serif logo. Articles include interviews with inspirational women in beauty-adjacent jobs and reviews of popular skin care products.

But there are also a lot of articles about aesthetic medical treatments. There are first-person essays recounting experiences with injectables and breezy interviews with beauty editors about their experiences with the procedures. The word “Botox” is never mentioned. Instead, the site is “brand-agnostic,” according to an Allergan representative, meaning it uses the phrase “wrinkle reducer” instead. It’s a little jarring to read it in interviews because no one really talks like that. In real life, everyone just says Botox.

“The content will be 50 percent medical aesthetics and 50 percent beauty. The juxtaposition of beauty and medical aesthetics gives readers a holistic lens into these worlds, while providing them with a variety of options to discover,” an Allergan representative wrote to Vox in an email.

Further supporting the thesis that there is a new beautification of Botox happening, Spotlyte is led by Alexandra Wilkis Wilson, who co-founded Gilt Groupe and GlamSquad. The latter is a service that allows you to book on-demand beauty services like hairstyling and makeup application in your home. Wilson knows how to position and sell beauty messaging.

Spotlyte is part of a mysterious initiative Allergan is calling Project Moonwalker, which “has been charged with fueling the category with digital innovation and thought leadership in order to change consumer perception and engagement with medical aesthetics.” Reading between the (frown) lines here, changing consumer perception likely means making medical aesthetics less scary and more normalized.

There is a chat system prominently displayed on the site for readers who have questions. “We want consumers to make an appointment, get a consult and have a treatment … that’s the goal,” writes the Allergan rep.

Alchemy 43’s concept has proven to be very popular. The first shop opened in 2016, and there are now four outposts in LA. Levy, the founder, plans to open more in New York City in early 2019; Dallas, Orange County, and Miami will follow. Alchemy 43 has $3.2 million in funding, and, tellingly, one of its investors is Drybar founder Alli Webb.

Like Spotlyte’s leader, Levy is also using her background in beauty to position medical aesthetics as a beauty treatment. She has a long history in the beauty industry, working with makeup brands like MAC and Benefit. She also worked for years at Allergan as a sales rep, and both experiences inform how she markets the treatments. And like what the anti-aging skin care industry is doing lately, she uses terms that skew more positive rather than talking about changing your looks.

“We’re not about fixing problems,” Levy says. “It’s kind of like if you want to buy new makeup. We’re not about covering flaws or changing people’s faces; we’re about taking their natural look and enhancing them, whatever that means to them.”

Levy says she’s been surprised that the early adopters at Alchemy 43 have been younger, first-time injectors, not older women who already have experience with injections. (Men, a growing cohort of injectable users, make up about 15 percent of her customers.)

Younger customers are bringing in their moms. “So what happens now is we’ll have a girl come in — it’s her first experience with preventive Botox or with getting her lips enhanced, and then two weeks later she brings Mom in,” says Levy. “It’s been this shift in who’s teaching who about beauty.”

At $200 and up, several times a year, the procedures are not cheap. Alchemy 43 offers a payment system whereby members can pay $99 per month via debit, and that money is then banked and customers can apply it to treatments. There are perks to being a member, such as 15 percent off treatments and free treatments after a certain time period. (Levy says millennials seem to be “scared” of credit.)

What’s happening here is a continued normalization of what has historically been considered taboo. Separating out injections from the scary world of plastic surgery and positioning them as a beauty treatment, like getting your eyebrows waxed, is an important step in that direction for the companies that are selling us these procedures.

There are a lot of cultural implications, none of them particularly good. The same arguments that existed when all of these injectable products first launched are still there: Is it worth the health risk, however small, of injecting unnatural substances into your face? Should we really be trying to literally erase the signs of age from our faces? As a person who has been getting “wrinkle-reducing injections” every six months for the past several years, I question all of these things regularly. But youthfulness equating to attractiveness is a difficult norm to buck. Chasing and maintaining youth can be an addictive pursuit.

Levy compares what’s happening in the injectable market now to other beauty treatments like bikini waxing. [It was a] “fringe thing to do, but things go through this evolution and then pretty soon everybody does it and you’re crazy if you don’t,” she says. “I feel like Botox and injectables are at that peak now. No longer is it this shameful thing. Now it’s like, ‘Who does your Botox?’”

Would You Lease To This Mystery-Tenant?

With new legislation continuing to favour tenants over landlords, a landlord has to make very sure that he or she wants to effectively be “partners” in a real estate investment, since a tenant is very hard to remove once the lease is signed and the key is in the door.

I’ve always been extremely diligent when evaluating candidacy for my investor-clients.

Last month, I received an offer on a rental property with a very mysterious tenant.

Let me tell the whole story, and you decide whether or not you’d have this person as your tenant…

Okay, maybe that photo is a bit overboard.

It’s not like we didn’t see the tenant’s face in the story I’m about to tell.

But even when you do meet the tenant, and even when he or she is nice, pleasant, says all the right things, and seems trustworthy, it can blow up in your face.

Last month, there was a story about a “professional scammer” in Liberty Village who had duped at least twelve landlords and/or roommates.  Read the story HERE.

I’m also reminded of another story, this one from 2016, which is a classic “don’t judge a book by its cover” lesson.

As this article reads, a “well-dressed, professional-tenant” had been duping landlords in Yorkville, and gaming the system designed to protect both landlords and tenants.  A 62-year-old man, seemingly-normal, wearing a suit, with tales of his career as a professional, had been moving into expensive condos, not paying the rent, and then forcing the landlords to chase him through the courts for eviction.

As I tell my investor-clients, the professional scammers usually stick to online ads, and don’t look to MLS for their prey.  If they do, they’re looking for an absentee-landlord, with an absent-minded agent, and if and when they’re pressed on personal info, they’ll simply flee, and move on to an easier target.

Nonetheless, I try to be very diligent when looking for tenants for my investor-clients, while trying to avoid doing anything that could be construed as “discrimination.”

What actually is discrimination can change like the direction of the wind, and as the word gets softer, and a lot weirder as we wind down 2017, I think a lot of people would cry “discrimination” if they could.

This is why when rejecting a candidate, you simply say, “We’re going in another direction,” and not answer any follow-up questions, as was the case last month when my investor clients turned aside a rather mysterious tenant.

Mysterious might not be the right word, as I alluded to above.

But “sketchy” is fair.  And I’m sure we could think up some other words to describe her.

But in the end, we just didn’t think she passed the “sniff test,” which is a very inexact science, but one that is often the most useful, nonetheless.

As is the case with many of my stories, I’m going to change some of the details to try to protect anonymity…

I had a listing for a 1-bed, 1-bath condo in the west end, up for lease for $1,995/month.

Surprisingly, it didn’t lease in the first 12 hours like most places in this red-hot Toronto rental market, and it actually sat for a full week!

On the eighth day of the listing, I received a phone call from a rather young agent who said he would be submitting an offer on behalf of his client, and that the client was a “Triple-A tenant with great income.”

He wasn’t wrong, on the latter part – at least not at face value.

Upon receiving the offer shortly thereafter, I scanned through the supporting documents.  Those documents, for those of you that don’t know, are usually the following:

1) Rental Application (OREA document – name, DOB, address, last two places of residence, occupation, present and prior employment, financial obligations, personal references, etc).

2) Credit Check (I always ask for Equifax, full version, with the “FICO Score” and all debt as well as credit inquiries).

3) Employment Letter

Beyond these, however, I insist upon “proof” of employment, such as recent pay stubs, or a screenshot of a bank account showing deposits from the employer.

I also look up the tenant on LinkedIn (any business professional without LinkedIn is suspicious), Facebook (see how they act in their spare time), Instagram, Pinterest, and anything else I can find online.

So upon receiving these supporting documents, the first one I looked at was the employment letter.

That was the first red flag.

Wait, that’s not exactly true.  The very first red flag was the very first thing you’d see on any rental application or offer: the tenant’s name.

Ruby Starr

Yes, this tenant’s name was Ruby Starr.

Now, I don’t think you have to be a regular visitor to websites that would crash your hard-drive to think that perhaps a name like “Ruby Starr” might be one you’d find in the world of adult entertainment.

The name was a bit odd, but I moved along regardless.

I got to the employment letter, and that’s when my spidey-sense really started tingling.

Ms. Ruby Starr, apparently, made $95,000 per year working at a sandwich shop.

But it wasn’t just any sandwich shop; it was one in Niagara Falls.

It really didn’t make any sense to me.

And the letter was on a blank, white, standard, 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper, typed in Times New Roman, and signed by a guy whose name was something out of The Sopranos.

I looked up the sandwich shop, and they did indeed exist.  Not only that, they were quite well-known, with five locations in Niagara Falls.

The employment letter said that Ruby Starr was going to head up the expansion plan of this “family company” that sells sandwiches in Niagara Falls, as they look to open two locations in Toronto.

I called the gentleman who signed the letter, and he sounded somewhat legit.  He said that Ms. Starr would be driving around to different suppliers, managing the new locations, overseeing the construction, etc., and it all sounded good until he sort of trailed off, like he was focused on something else but still trying to speak into the phone, and he just started muttering random words like, “direct suppliers…….bakery buns…….you know, cold cuts………like two locations………it’s all good……..salads too.”

I can’t quite explain it, but I felt as though the person I was speaking to wasn’t really all there on our phone call.

I followed up with the cooperating agent and asked for a few recent pay stubs, and he emailed them to me within five minutes.

That was either very helpful, and convenient, or it was suspicious – as in why didn’t he send these over with all the other supporting documentation before?

The “pay stubs” weren’t really stubs of any sort.  They were basically two PDF’s, which contained deposit amounts and looked as though they were typed in Excel.

Anybody could have typed those up, clicked “Save as PDF,” and called them stubs.

But even more suspicious now was the fact that the address on the pay stubs didn’t match the address on the rental application, which upon further research, didn’t match the address on the driver’s license.

And I’m not sure if this matters, but that driver’s license had expired.

So we had three different mailing addresses, and none of them were in Niagara Falls where Ms. Starr apparently had worked for the past six months – according to her rental application.

Oh, wait, one more thing – the guy from The Sopranos said she had been working for him for over a year.

It was all pretty messy, if you ask me.

This girl made $90,000+ working for a family sandwich-chain, in Niagara Falls, having never lived there, and she had three different addresses.

And her name was Ruby Starr…

I looked her up online, and she had no LinkedIn profile.

I found her on Facebook, and she looked……..well……

….well, I asked one of the younger guys in my office, “Hey, what does this girl look like to you?”

He smiled, as though it were a trick question, and said, “I dunno, an escort?”

I asked him, “Come on, be serious.  What do you think when you see this photo?”

He said, “I think that girl is probably at that club (in the photo) to meet rich men.”

He identified the club as Cabana from the background, and then we went through four or five other photos of her at clubs, which he identified.

I felt somewhat guilty, simply judging or labelling this girl because of how she looked.  But the name!  I couldn’t get over the name!  The $95,000 salary too!  It didn’t add up.

I discussed the situation with my landlord-clients, and they said they wanted to meet Ms. Starr.

So I told the cooperating agent that my landlord would be at the condo on Saturday, and she could drop by and say “hello.”

My clients Brad and Allison, called me after the meeting, and they were pretty coy.

“We’re not quite sure what to say,” Brad told me.  “Something was…….off.”

“Yeah, something was off.  That’s a good way to put it,” Allison said.  “The girl just seemed so spaced out, and nervous!  Oh my word, was she nervous!  She wouldn’t look us in the eye, she kept staring at the floor, and she kept fidgeting.”

I asked for them to tell me a little more about her, and they said things like, “She was nice,” and “She seemed pleasant,” but it wasn’t really what I was getting at.

So I said, “Brad, I’m going to ask Allison this question so you don’t get in trouble.  Allison, was this girl attractive?”

Allison said, “Yes.”

I asked, “Very?”

And Allison said, “She was a rocket, David!  A rocket!”

Brad laughed, and said, “Yeah, look, I don’t know what she does for a living, and maybe part of me doesn’t care, but something seems off here.”

Brad then asked if her boss told me what she was doing, and I said yes, that he said she’d be driving around to different suppliers, the various locations they were opening, etc.

There was a pause, and then Allison said, “David that’s so odd, because we asked her if she wanted to see the parking space, and she said she didn’t have a car!”

That was strange.

But even stranger was when Ms. Starr also said she hadn’t seen the condo!  She said, “My agent just made this offer for me; I haven’t seen this place yet.”

Everything that this girl said raised another red flag.

At one point, she said she didn’t know where the two new sandwich shop locations were going to be, and when pressed, she said, “I can’t tell you, we’re not telling people.”

Then somehow or other, her background came up, and she said, “I’m from Russia, but I was adopted by a very wealthy family.”

When asked about the three addresses she provided, she said that she had just broken up with her boyfriend, and the address on her pay stubs were from his place, but she was staying with her parents (the second address), and she simply “forgot” what she was doing when filling out the rental application with the third address, because she was “rushed.”

It didn’t add up.

She made almost $100K per year working for a sandwich shop in Niagara Falls, but had never lived in Niagara Falls.

She provided us with three different addresses.

Her only piece of ID was an expired driver’s license.

She had never seen the condo when the offer was made on her behalf.

Her employment letter was typed on a blank piece of paper, and her pay stubs were just PDF’s from Excel.

She had no car, but her boss said her job involved driving around.

She said she had worked at the sandwich shop for six months, but her boss said over a year.

Her boss was just as sketchy as she was.

She was apparently from Russia, but adopted by a “wealthy Canadian family.”

Her Facebook photos were all of her, very dressed up, at nightclubs.

And her name, was Ruby Starr.

It was just all way too convoluted, and there was no reason for the landlords to take the risk that this wasn’t some sort of scam.

I’m sorry, this girl could end up being the nicest human on the planet.  I could be totally wrong in all of this.  There could be logical explanations for every single red flag I’ve raised above.  But in the end, there is always another renter out there, and with vacancy rates in Toronto at less than 1%, there’s no reason to work with this prospective tenant.

Of course, it helped that later that night – after the meeting between Ruby Starr and my clients, we received another offer on the condo.
