#adding ghost trick to my list of what im calling ''gateway games''#which are to me games that allow you to introduce a new comer to the tone and mechanics of a larger franchise#see a while ago i was thinking about what yakuza game id recommend a newcomer to play#and i came to the conclusion that my answer is actually judgment#cause yakuza is a long ass franchise that asks for a fair bit of patience if youre playing through the entire series for the first time#but judgment is pretty low commitment. standalone self contained story that allows you to get a feel for the vibes of yakuza#and i think ghost trick is that to ace attorney#not as cleanly mind you. ghost tricks brand of mystery and puzzle solving id say... a bit less demanding than ace attorneys#but like i think ghost trick has similar vibes to ace attorney. if you like one youll like the other#and i think ghost trick is shorter than most of the ace attorney games. so its low commitment#i had this thought cause i was describing ghost trick to a friend while i was playing it#and he sounded pretty interested. despite the fact that i cant convince him to dip his toes in ace attorney waters#ranting

Ngl my main takeaway from that video is not sparkly Edgeworth, or what do you mean you can play the games in any order, or where is plvspw, or even Weirdo Number ...
I JUST CAN'T BELIEVE I'VE BEEN PRONOUNCING BAROK WRONG THIS ENTIRE TIME??
#ace attorney#ik lots of people were hoping for something new but I didn't come into this expecting a game announcement so it was fun!#can't believe ERIC VALE voiced phoenix in a PROMO THOUGH WHAT#WHERE was Christopher Wehkamp though?? Don't think Edgeworth's va was the same as in the anime#oh and if ghost trick is considered part of the universe there's. Implications there#Most importantly that Missle is the same Missle!!#my Detective Jowd mentored Gumshoe and that's where he got the coat from hc can be real... /j not like they'd actually confirm something#like that lmao

yeah gang we've done ace attorney and professor layton so now we're completing the Capcom Trio.
#Personally I think Jowd deserves to say it#also I'm tagging [spoiler man's] name so beware#Ghost trick#ghost trick phantom detective#Capcom#Ace attorney#Sissel#Cabanela#Lynne#detective jowd#Yomiel#Also gonna do this again: 50 notes and you're getting an artistic depiction of the winner saying the darnest thing#Was gonna be 100 but that seemed ambitious seeing as Ghost Trick's far too underrated

I was recently reminded of one of Phoenix's many near death experiences and that in turn reminded me of my headcanon that Sissel (from Ghost Trick) exists in his universe and is constantly having to save his life
This obviously leaves the glaring issue of why Sissel hasn't saved anyone else's lives, but I guess we can just say Wright is special and Sissel doesn't like to interfere too much
#ace attorney#Ghost Trick#they're both Capcom characters so it makes sense#And spirit channelling already exists so the Powers of the Dead are not that much of a stretch#the only reason I don't think a cross-over game would work is that their gameplays are mutually exclusive:#if you stop a murder occurring then you don't need to prove anyone's innocence#Now Prof Layton X Ghost Trick on the other hand that's an idea I can get behind

From what I’ve gathered, you’re a DS/3DS person. Besides the obvious choices of Pokémons and Laytons, what are some of your favorite obscure titles that more people should play if they have the physical or TOTALLY LEGAL means to?
PICROSS 3D
#genuinely though that is my answer. play it.#outside of that the first two gens of pokemon mystery dungeon are great. i haven't played them in full but twewy/ghost trick are classics#ace attorney but you can play that far more accessibly on pc/mobile/every other device these days#i think everyone knows and loves tomodachi life#a weird pull? i genuinely enjoyed pokemon art academy.#i haven't played this one either but from what i've seen the fossil fighters series is a fun very niche pick#in general just go rooting through videos or lists of ds/3ds games you will definitely find something to love#there were just SO many strange and wonderful things being made in that era because of the portability and such

Owl Reviews Stuff She Just Finished: Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright
So yk I didn't know what to expect going into this game, I'd seen really funny dialogue of it and mostly got it because I was extremely hyperfixated on Layton. But I did NOT expect such an emotional rollercoaster of a game with themes that tie into both Professor Layton and Ace Attorney and utilizes the strengths of each series so efficiently. I did not expect this game to make me cry. I did not expect this game to become one of my favorite Professor Layton AND Ace Attorney titles. But it did so I have to talk about it.
With two successful IPs on the cover this game could have easily been halfassed but every corner of it is full of passion for both titles. I mentioned before how they build off and complement each other and I think that's a result of the people working on this game having an in-depth knowledge of what makes PL and AA work and what their shortcomings are.
For example (I mentioned this in the liveblogs but may as well repeat myself here) Ace Attorney games are often limited to just the courtroom and investigation, not to mention you're not going to see 90% of the characters ever again after the case is done. This is serviceable for the kind of game AA is but it makes the world itself feel a bit uninteresting. However Professor Layton games have you confined to one town and make you explore it in depth, with recurring background characters who all have different (yet basic) personalities. Because of this, the Layton segments where you walk around town become crucial parts of the game where you can interact with future or past witnesses as they go about their lives, making these witch trials feel like they're taking part within an actual community, which make the emotional beats in the trials hit REALLY hard.
In turn, AA strengthens PL by adding variety. Layton games can be a bit monotonous if you're not engaged since the gameplay mostly consists of talking to people and solving an occassional puzzle, and there's a lack of interesting smaller mysteries to keep the audience engaged while they work on solving the bigger ones. But Ace Attorney games thrive on side stories, they're what make the trials so interesting! So by adding the smaller mysteries in the form of witch trials and mixing in clues about what the Hell is going on in Laberynthia you make a much more dynamic story that never feels like you're getting nowhere.
Enough about story structure and nerd stuff like that though, let's talk characters!
I love the main four and have always loved the main four so I'm not gonna talk abt them. The original characters for this game were freaking amazing. I see a lot of people really dislike Espella (which is understandable since she's probably the weakest of the cast) but she's pretty alright imo. She's going through a lot of things with the entire town despising her and [SPOILERS] so it makes sense why she would act the way she does, even then I feel like most heartfelt moments with her were a bit forced, which kind of lessens the impact of the last scene. I LOVE the relationship between her and [ANOTHER SPOILER] as well as the dynamic she has with Maya though.
I LOVE BARNHAM. He's one of my favorite prosecutors, he may not have any deep angst or trauma like so many of my favs do, but he's just a well meaning dude who thinks he's doing what he needs to to protect his town, even if it means casting wiitches into the flames. He also goes through a little character arc of his own where he also starts to bend the rules, the only laberynthian to do so. It's fun. Barnham is my best friend.
Unfortunately I can't talk about Darklaw or The Storyteller without getting into spoilers but basically: I love Darklaw and think she deserves the world, I'm on the fence about The Storyteller and feel like parts of his character were extremely rushed.
The secondary characters are also great, you have your classic goofy witnesses but also some really heartfelt characters and relationships in the trials, this is nothing new for Ace Attorney but when you include the conscious knowledge that these characters are going to be cast into the fire then these mini stories are enough to move me to tears (Looking at you, Golden Court).
Anyway, overall a fantastic experience that caught me completely off guard. No notes. I give it 10 burning witches out of 10.
Oh. And also:
#once again spoiler free so i can convince you to like the things i like#sorry for the incomprehensible rambling these 'reviews' are essentially excuses to ramble anyway so#i have a lot more concrete thoughts on this than i did for ghost trick i think thats bc im familiar with these series and ik how they work#owl reviews stuff she just finished#plvspw#professor layton vs phoenix wright#plvsaa#professor layton#ace attorney

So like. As I'm sure some of you may know, Ghost Trick's creator, Shu Takumi, and producer Shingo Izumi have said they might think about doing a sequel if ghost trick's remaster is shown a lot of support.
Which is interesting to me because I can see a 2nd ghost trick game going in two different ways. Either a spinoff title of ace attorney vs ghost trick, which back in 2013, Shu Takumi talked about.
Or.....a direct actual sequel. And I think the majority opinion on a sequel is that it would be hard to pull off since ghost trick's story is so tight. Though I think it could be pulled off, it just wouldn't make sense for it to focus on sissel again. My ideal for a sequel would actually be for it to focus on kamila.
My justification for this is that an older kamila would be involved in a plot about the foreign nation (in the new timeline) getting info about the temsik and solving the mysteries surrounding it. And yeah, sissel and missile tag along. Missile probably dies again and gets his ghost powers back. Maybe kamila would get some too. Who knows?
I only thought about this bc even though the rest of the story is tied up pretty nicely, we don't know ANYTHING about the foreign nation. What were their goals? Why did they need a piece of the meteorite? Did they know about it before meeting yomiel?
Anyways this is just speculation lmao
#on another note. I think takumi's vision for a ghost trick ace attorney crossover is soooooo funny#bc in my head. I thought it would be like. lynne is wanted for murder right. in ace attorney universe they#throw around the death penalty like crazy. sissel and missile and yomiel try to get her out of it.#sissel's and missile's job is to mess with the evidence found at the scene of the crime#sissel tries to lead the defense attorney to find the ''evidence'' that proves lynne is innocent. meanwhile missile is to#mislead the prosecutor by only showing evidence that is easily refuted in court#yomiel is the corpse btw (hiding who was actually killed). no autopsy report bc he just walked off when no one was looking#as per usual everything goes horribly wrong. eventually in the court room he accuses sissel (a cat) of murder#with his accomplice being missile. but takumi is just straight up like#''sissel is the prosecutor and phoenix is fucking dead'' the madman. the funniest timeline#btw the only reason why they all have their powers in my version is bc most crossovers kinda ignore#the canon like that and I will too
