i’ve said it before and i’ll say it again: we’re not “bringing back” the chimney discourse. you can’t bring back what never got resolved in the first place.

I wish S2 E5 got more attention, I know it was seasons ago but that was the episode I knew Buddie was endgame. It brought together 4 characters Buck, Eddie, Chim and Maddie and basically outlined their future dealings with each other as couples.
With Maddie, Chim had his dorky pop culture side that clearly made Maddie swoon. And Chim, like how do you not heart eye the adorable JLH. They clicked and you felt it.
With Buddie, its that jaws of life comment that made Eddie think he was the smartest dude in the room. Even when he walks in he just brushes past Maddie looking for plates for food. He has no idea Chim may have developed an interest, but he clearly has none. Then Buck basically assuming if you are talking about a hot guy in a room you clearly mean Eddie right?
Even though women have flown in and out they never loose their vibes in both couples. And it honestly says alot because of course everything Buddie related in the first 4 episodes was awesome, especially episode 4 with Carla. But it was 5 that made me realize OK, they really are gonna make Eddie distinctively different with Buck then anyone else.
Hi Nonnie! Oooh, I love this ask!
So, if we're gonna talk ep 206, which starts with Buck, Chim and Eddie helping Maddie move into her new apartment, then I can tell you I have screamed about it over here, as well as in other meta posts referencing back this dialogue, but I think you're right and I haven't talked about it enough. Because YES. It sets up this ongoing parallel between Madney and Buddie, and you're absolutely right. Not only is it SO telling that when Maddie says, "He's cute!" Buck's mind jumps directly to Eddie (confirming what Maddie said earlier in 204, that Buck has a "boy crush" on him), it's also so meaningful that Eddie is around this gorgeous, smart, funny, kind woman and yet the person he's completely wrapped up in is Buck...
And this ep is, ironically, the one where Taylor is first introduced! So it's explicitly established Buck thinks Eddie is cute before she even shows up. And when she does? That's the ep that gives us peak jealous!Eddie for the first time. Taylor talks to Bobby? Everything's fine. Taylor talks to Buck? Eddie right away struts over all territorial. It can't be just that he thinks Taylor isn't trust-worthy, or he would have come over when she was talking to Bobby, too!
I'll be honest, I didn't know yet during 206 if Buddie will be endgame. But by then, I knew I wanted them to be. I think some of the stuff I wrote about in my 204 meta (the way Buck and Eddie are so connected, and Eddie trusts Buck, letting him into his and Chris' life, the way Buck gives Eddie the perfect help that he wasn't even knowingly asking for) that's what already convinced me that whether they will be or not, they SHOULD be endgame. I still stand by that.
Thank you, Nonnie! I hope this answer was satisfying? Please feel free to let me know! Hope you have a great day! xoxox
And if you or anyone else is looking for my other ask replies, you can find them using my ask tag. xoxox

dancing in a snow globe 'round and 'round
title: dancing in a snow globe 'round and 'round
Summary: Eddie mock-glares at him. “You’re a coward, starting something when you know I can’t retaliate since you’re holding your niece.”
Buck smirks smugly. “This little one will protect me,” He says and bends down to nuzzle her head, making her burst out into giggles. Eddie has to look away abruptly, something inexplicably warm and fuzzy building in his chest, a feeling of want so strong he thinks his heart might burst.

As Eddie lets himself into Buck’s apartment, he is instantly greeted with the high-pitched wails of a crying baby and the sight of his best friend looking minutes away from beginning to cry himself as he bounces his niece in his arms. Eddie bites back a smile, closing the door behind him.
“I thought you said this was an emergency,” He teases. Buck looks up, his expression morphing from one of relief to a glare.
“Make yourself useful and help me,” Buck all but whines. “She won’t stop crying and I don’t know what to do, I tried feeding her and it didn’t work. Her-her diaper doesn’t need to be changed and I-I don’t know, am I hurting her? Why did Maddie let me babysit? I’m terrible at this!”
“Alright, alright,” Eddie quickly goes to Buck and gently takes Baby Joy out of his arms. Buck lets go hesitantly and his eyes become comically wide as Joy begins to quiet down almost instantly when Eddie cradles her in his arms.
“You’re kidding me,” He says, looking betrayed. “How did you do that?”
“You’re stressed out and panicking,” Eddie says patiently. “Which means you’re stressing her out in return. Babies can sense that sort of thing, you know.” A smirk appears on his face. “Unless she just prefers me to you,” He looks down at Joy, cooing at her. “You prefer me to your Uncle Buck, don’t you, honey?”
“I hate you,” Buck grumbles, sinking down into the couch. “I’ll have you know that I’ll always be her favorite.”
“I’m surprised Albert isn’t fighting you for that title.”
“Hah! He can try.”
“Where are Chim and Maddie, anyway?”
“Date night,” Buck replies, reaching out for Joy again, sighing in relief when Eddie gives her back and she doesn’t immediately start crying again, instead just reaching up and fisting her little hand in his shirt. He all but melts, smiling dopily down at her. She really is a little angel when she isn’t screaming loud enough to wake half of Los Angeles.
“It’s their first night out since Joy was born,” He continues, looking up at Eddie now that he’s sure Joy’s not going to throw another tantrum. “I offered to babysit, and, well…”
Eddie looks amused as he sits down next to Buck, stretching his arm over the back of the couch, his thigh pressing into Buck’s. “Just because she happened to have a crying fit while you happened to be babysitting doesn’t mean you’re terrible at this, you know. Babies cry sometimes. It’s been known to happen.”
Buck pouts at him. “Stop making fun of me.”
Eddie tries to keep a straight face and fails miserably. “I wouldn’t dream of it.”
Careful not to dislodge Joy, Buck picks up a couch cushion and throws it at Eddie’s face. Eddie mock-glares at him.
It's been a while since Eddie had come to the long overdue realization that the feelings he had for his best friend might not have been as platonic as he’d thought. It had dawned on him, ironically enough, while he had been dating Ana Flores. As smart and kind and pretty as she was, no amount of time they spent together had ever made him feel as at home and carefree and…safe, even, as coming back home after every single date with her, to see Buck either on his couch playing with Christopher or waiting with a cup of coffee and a soft smile long after Chris was in bed. The moment he’d started realizing that was the moment he started noticing everything else, the way they were constantly in sync in everything they did; be it tiding up Buck’s living room after movie night with Christopher or out in the field, doing their jobs and saving lives. The way he gravitated to Buck, constantly in his orbit, wanting to share any piece of good or exciting news or even random trivia with him, first, and no one else. The way watching Buck with his son sometimes moved him so much, he’d need a moment to compose himself, to hide the feelings he felt must show so plainly on his face, clear for the world to see.
After that, he had to break up with Ana. And he still hasn’t done anything about his feelings, because, well…
Well, Eddie has never claimed to be brave when it comes to matters of the heart. There’s a reason why Buck has teasing called him ‘emotionally constipated’ more than a couple of times.
There’s a knock on the door, bringing Eddie out of his musings. Buck perks up.
“I ordered us some pizza before you got here,” He says and nods to his wallet on the coffee table. “Could you go get it?”
Eddie is relieved to do so, convinced that he won’t be able to conceal the extent of his affections the longer he keeps watching Buck with Baby Joy. As he takes the pizza from the delivery guy, he hears Joy begin to fuss again and doesn’t even need to look over his shoulder to know that Buck is panicking. He can’t help but chuckle.
The delivery guy peers around the doorway and smiles at what Eddie presumes is Buck with Joy. “Newborn, eh?”
“Yeah,” Eddie laughs fondly as he pays him. “She’s got quite the pair of lungs on her.”
The delivery guy shakes his head with an endeared smile. “Looks like you and your husband have your hands full.”
Eddie stills at the innocuous remark and before he can say anything, the delivery guy has bid him goodbye and left. He closes the door slowly, frozen in place.
It’s not an unreasonable assumption, he thinks. Hell, it’s probably one he would make himself. It shouldn’t be that surprising that people look at him and Buck, with a baby between them and automatically think they’re together. He wouldn’t be surprised if the same thing has happened whenever Buck has joined him and Christopher on any of their outings.
No, what is surprising, somehow despite the fact that he knows he has feelings for his best friend, is how desperately he wants it to be true. How much he wants Buck to be with him and Christopher, the three of them a family; how easy it is to envision it and scarily enough, how easy it is to go even further and see them many years along the line, still together, possibly even with another child-
“Eddie?” Buck’s voice sounds in equal parts amused and concerned. “Are you just gonna stand there with the pizza all day?”
Eddie turns to face him. Joy seems to have calmed down, since Buck has placed her back in her crib. Taking a step towards him, Buck must see some of the existential crisis playing out in Eddie’s head right now on his face because he quickly takes the pizza from him and sets it down.
“Hey, man,” All traces of amusement are gone from his face now. “What’s wrong?”
There are a number of things that Eddie wants to say. That he should say. He knows he shouldn’t jump into something without thinking about it properly, especially after the disaster that was him moving too fast and too recklessly with Ana.
And yet.
This isn’t just anyone. This is Buck.
And Eddie isn’t even perfectly sure that Buck even feels the same way, but-
He’s never felt quite so compelled to just go for it, to throw caution to the wind and be brave for once as he does now.
Slowly, Eddie sways into Buck’s space, cupping the back of his neck and pressing his forehead to his. He feels Buck exhale sharply, stiffening for a brief moment, before melting into his hold.
“Eddie,” Buck breathes, his voice breaking on the last syllable.
“Is this okay?” Eddie whispers, not quite sure what it is that he’s asking permission for.
Is it okay for me to touch you? Is it okay for us to cross that line? Is it okay that nothing is ever going to be the same again?
Are you sure you want me, baggage, demons and all?
Buck responds by closing the space between them and kissing him.
It’s soft and gentle and sweet, somehow both hesitant and confident at the same time, so much like Buck himself that Eddie smiles into the kiss, joyful laughter caught in his throat as he pulls him closer. They keep it at that, mindful of the fact that there’s a baby less than five feet away from them, not even kissing after a point but just swaying together, breathing in each other’s air.
“So, this is new,” Buck murmurs what may be twenty seconds or twenty years later.
Eddie hums. “Feels like we’ve been dancing around it for a lot longer than we’ve both realized.”
Buck chuckles. “I wasn’t sure if you felt the same way.” He admits. “And…I guess I was scared, too.”
Eddie pulls away slightly to look at him. “So was I,” He says quietly. “Hell, I still am. But…” He pauses momentarily, trying to find the words. “I think we can be good together. We are good together.”
Buck’s responding smile is like sunshine personified and Eddie can’t help but kiss it, lingering softly, just because he can.
“I guess we’re really doing this then,” Buck says, breathlessly when they part.
As if on cue, Joy begins to fuss again and Eddie laughs at Buck’s groan.
“I think she’s hungry,” Eddie says. “And our pizza is getting cold.”
“But we’ll talk later, right?” Buck asks, rather anxiously. “We need to figure this out-and work-and Christopher-“
The fact that Buck’s already thinking of Chris makes Eddie’s heart swell. “We will,” He assures him, taking his hand in his, smiling when Buck interlinks their fingers. “One thing at a time.”
Joy makes another disgruntled noise and Buck finally nods, his smile returning as he turns to check on her. And Eddie-Eddie cannot be happier.
And maybe, for once, he gets to keep this.

Indigo Night
Just a cute lil fic based on this post because it was honestly hilarious.
Title doesn’t really have anything to do with the fic, I just like the song.
Read it on AO3.
It’s a quiet night inside the fire station.
Eddie is comfortably seated on the couch, waiting for their next call but secretly hoping he can sleep until the end of his shift.
Hen is seated on his right side. She seems focused on a book but from the way her eyes keep shutting every few seconds, Eddie knows she’s one second away from falling asleep.
Chimney’s there too, sprawled on the armchair, his eyes fixed on the television currently broadcasting an old episode of Friends, his mouth agape.
And then there’s Bobby, seated at the table, focused on some documents. Only Buck is absent, probably still fast asleep in his bunk downstairs.
“What you doing, Cap?” Hen asks from the couch, her voice low.
“Just getting the paperwork ready for when Eddie and Buck finally get together.” Bobby answers and his voice is deadly serious but a small smile still stretches up his lips at the edges. Eddie whirls his head around and rolls his eyes at him.
“That’s hilarious, Cap.” He says sarcastically and sighs, throwing his head backwards until it touches the backrest of the couch.
“He’s not wrong, y'know.” Chimney adds. “Just tell the damn man you’re in love with him already. This is getting embarrassing.”
Eddies lets out a small laugh and shakes his head in disbelief. There’s no point in denying it any longer – he thinks. Because he is. In love with Buck, that is.
And it’s not breaking news either. It might have been a few years ago, might have been a few months ago, even. But not anymore.
It seems to be a widely accepted truth among the 118. Whether it be among his closest co-workers or among the b-shift as well, everybody just seems to be in the confidence. Nobody questions it. No-one even doubts it. It’s just there, so vibrant, so loud, and Eddie just came to the conclusion that there was simply no need to acknowledge the elephant in the room. No need to make it clearer than it already is. Not after what happened. Not after that day.
Not after the shooting.
Christopher knows, too. Eddie thought he had been discreet enough not to arise suspicion from his own son, but when this one asked him whether the reason he broke up with Ana was because he was in love with ‘his Bucky’, Eddie realized that he had read it all wrong once again. Christopher was just too damn smart for his own good.
Even his own family. Abuela, Tia Pepa, his sisters, all of them confronted him with the truth the day after his break-up with Ana.
“For the love of god Eds please tell him because we’re getting real tired to hear you whine about it every single time we have you on Skype.”
And in his defense, Eddie’s trying. He’s trying really hard to get the message through the thick brain of his best-friend but he may as well waste his breath.
“Yeah well.” Eddie starts and rubs his temples with his hands, holding back a yawn. “I’ve been trying, guys. Buck is just… Clueless.”
“Maybe it’s time you use a more direct approach?” Bobby dares asking after a few seconds.
“Clearer than making him the legal guardian of my own son?” Eddie asks, raising his eyebrows at him, unimpressed.
“Fair enough.” Hen admits quietly. “But you know, maybe you should just be m-”
The rest of the sentence dies in her throat as Buck makes his way upstairs. His steps are heavy with sleep, a steady beat that gives Eddie more comfort than he’d care to admit. His hair is completely disheveled, his face grizzled as he makes his way towards the couch. He takes a seat next to his best-friend, their thighs pressed together and that’s just another thing that drives Eddie crazy, the way Buck always seems to seek comfort in his arms, whether it be after a short nap inside the fire station, after a long shift or a hard call.
And who’s Eddie to deny him? He can’t.
So once again, he lifts his arm and his face softens when Buck instantly leans against him, shyly, discreetly, as if he’s still wondering if it’s allowed, as if he’s still wondering if that’s not crossing a line in their friendship. Eddie wraps his left arm around his shoulders and ignores the knowing looks of both Hen and Chimney, tracing small patterns on Buck’s chest instead.
“What were you guys talkin about?” He says, his voice still groggy from his nap.
“Eddie’s new crush.” Hen says so naturally Eddie almost misses it. But then Buck suddenly sits straight, whirling his head around until his eyes are fixed on him.
“Your… Your new crush?” Buck asks and his face scrunches up in the most adorable confusion Eddie has to physically refrain himself from cradling his chin and kiss him right there on this couch. “You… You didn’t tell me you were… Interested in someone.”
“Yeah well… That’s actually the reason I broke up with Ana.” Eddie tells him, looking at his best-friend without batting an eyelid. For a few seconds, Eddie thinks he can see a flash of hope and longing cross his best-friend’s eyes but it’s gone just as fast. Buck’s eyes still shuttle back and forth, though, as if performing an internal scan of his face and Eddie only wishes he could know what kind of thoughts invade his best-friend’s brain.
“Oh.” Buck only answers, looking away. His eyebrows are furrowed in confusion and there’s that faraway look plastered on his face, the one he gets when his brain is working too fast for his head to catch up. “I- I didn’t know.” He adds. “That’s cool, man.” He says, his tone so cheerful and it’s like a switch flipped in his brain. There’s no confusion, anymore. No hesitation. No hope either. Almost like he pushed these feelings far, far in the back of his brain and forced himself to adopt his good old careless, bright and sparkling attitude.
“Yeah. I’ve actually been dropping them the most insanely obvious hints for, like, six months now. No response.” Eddie says. Hen snorts next to him.
“Wow they sound stupid, Eds.” Buck answers.
“But they’re not.” Eddie contradicts him. “They’re really smart, actually. Just… dense.”
“Maybe you need to be more obvious? Like I don’t know… ‘Hey I love you.’”
Eddie raises his eyes until they fall on Chimney and Hen who’re both watching him with so much expectation and what the hell? Eddie thinks, the opportunity is right there and it’s too good to be true and he would be damned if he didn’t use it.
“Yeah I guess you’re right.” He says, and takes a deep breath before adding: “Hey Buck, I love you.”
“Yes exactly!” Buck answers, smiling big and Eddie raises his eyebrows in confusion. “Just say that!”
“Holy fucking shit.” Eddie whispers while pressing his hand on his forehead, disbelief clearly shown on his face. Hen dissolves in laughter and Chimney hits his head with his book, like he can’t quite believe he saw that scene with his own two eyes.
“If that flies over their head then sorry Eddie, but they’re too dumb for you.” Buck adds after a few seconds, and really, Eddie always prided himself for being a patient man but there’s only so much he can do. “What’s her name?” Buck goes on asking and Eddie sighs.
“She’s a he, Buck.” Eddie instantly answers, exasperated. “He. Masculine. A guy. I like dudes, alright?”
“Really?” Buck smiles. “Do I know him?”
“Oh for Christ’s sake.” Hen groans, rolling her eyes.
And just when Eddie thinks he got through to Buck-
The bell rings.
The call is not bad. Nothing too major. No fire. No major injuries. Just a small car accident, the people involved more frightened than injured. They still take a few minutes to make sure everyone is okay and Eddie’s honestly thankful for the distraction.
Buck is there with him and they’re working in sync just like they always do, but his friend seems to be in a faraway land, his face constantly scrunched up in confusion. Eddie can feel his gaze out of the corner of the eye and there’s nothing more he wants than to turn around and kiss him to finally remove any doubt from his best-friend’s head but they’re on a call and Eddie knows that this is probably the least suited place to have that kind of conversation.
They need to keep it professional.
The drive back is silent, filled with an uneasiness no-one dares to question. Buck is seated right next to him in the ambulance, their shoulders touching with every turns and jolts. No-one questions it anymore. They stopped doing that a long time ago. Hen and Chim are there as well, facing them, invading their safe space and so Eddie gently nudges Buck, making sure his best-friend knows he’s there and ready to talk as soon as they can have some form of privacy.
When they get back inside the fire station, Eddie is once again drawn to Buck. He takes a seat next to him on the couch and smiles to himself when Hen, Chim and Bobby all collectively decided to give them the room.
Eddie can sense the anxiety radiating from his friend’s body and so he decides to take the matter into his own hands and gently catches Buck’s wrist and regularly taps his soft skin with his index, until he can feel his best-friend’s body relaxing next to him.
“Eds, this… this guy.” Buck starts, his voice uncertain, filled with doubt. “Is he uh... a good friend of yours?” He asks and Eddie knows there’s more to it than Buck lets himself express.
“Yeah, Buck.” He answers, squeezing his wrist and looking up at him. “The best-friend I’ve ever had.” He says and Buck’s breath catches in his throat.
“Well for the record, I- I’m pretty sure he likes you too.” Buck says, glancing at him nervously but looking away just as fast.
“Oh, you think?” Eddie teases him and that brings a smile to Buck’s face.
“I know.” He corrects himself. “I know he does. He just- I guess he just didn’t know how to tell you, and- and he also needed to be 100% sure that this was the direction you two were taking to- to actually do something about it.”
When Buck looks up, Eddie smiles softly at him and runs his right hand through his hair, letting it on the back of his head afterwards, making sure he has his undivided attention before saying these next few words.
“Then maybe you should tell him he’s it for me.” He says, and then adds: “I’m all in, Buck.”
“I love you.” Buck blurts out but he doesn’t stop there. “And I love Christopher. So damn much.” He adds. “So damn much.” He repeats. That makes Eddie smile. “But- Eds, you- I’m a lot of hard-work and I- I’m so messed-up man you have no idea how messed-up I am.” Buck marks a pause, and adds. “I mean, who am I kidding, of course- of course you do because you’re you and you’re putting up with my shit all the damn time and I’m just-”
Eddie cuts him off by pressing their lips together.
His thumb rubs his cheek while the rest of his fingers play with the roots of his hair. Buck’s palm is pressed on his chest and the next second, Eddie can feel Buck’s fist hold his shirt tightly, creasing it.
“There’s nothing to put up with.” Eddie says against his lips, cupping his cheeks with his hands to make him look up. “Alright?” He adds.
“Alright.” Buck’s voice is still fragile.
“Good.” Eddie says. “Glad we got that cleared up.” He adds casually and Buck scoffs. “Next time though, maybe be a bit quicker on the uptake?”
“Oh fuck off.” Buck says, nudging him playfully. He stays silent for a while before adding: “Can we go back ho-” He closes his eyes and shakes his head, correcting himself. “Can I hang out at your place tonight?”
Eddie sighs and intertwines their fingers together.
“Course you can.” He only says. “This is your home too, Evan.”

Pairing: Evan “Buck” Buckley/Eddie Diaz Rated: General Summary: “I’ve recently found myself with a lot of time on my hands and since you don’t seem to have enough to romance someone,” Buck began, settling his drink on the table, “I think it only makes sense for someone to romance you.”
Eddie huffed out a laugh and shot back, “Yeah, and how are you going to find someone willing to put in that effort?”
“Oh, you’re lookin’ at him.”
Or… Eddie gets the romance he deserves in the form of fluff-filled dates with Buck.
For @911fluffweek - day six: “But you love me anyway” // In your lap
(read chapter six on ao3 or start from the beginning)
Eddie found himself to be just as nervous standing on the step to Maddie’s home as he had been those few months ago. Back then, he was terrified of meeting his team’s families and having to somehow keep himself at arm’s length. He glanced over at where Buck gripped his hand tightly and realized just how badly he had failed at that task.
“You know, you have to knock on the door, Eds,” Buck said, furrowing his eyebrows in equal parts confusion and concern.
“Deja vu,” Eddie muttered, raising his hand to do just that. Before he could, the door flung open and Maddie stood before them, a wide grin on her face.
“Little brother!” She shouted and Buck rolled his eyes at the name before wrapping his arms around his sister’s waist and hugging her tightly. Eddie loved the way Buck hugged. He always put his entire body into it, rocking from side to side with his arms enveloping every inch he could. He loved watching Buck hug others and the way their smiles lit up their faces almost as much as he enjoyed being on the receiving end of one of his embraces.
“Hey, Mads,” he muttered, kissing her hair as he pulled back. “Where’s my favorite goddaughter?” He asked excitedly. Before Eddie could even so much as say hello, he was already making his way into the living room and picking Jee-Yun out of her pack-and-play to blow raspberries into her neck.
“Has he always been like that?” Eddie asked, giving Maddie a one-armed hug and holding up the bottle of wine he had to insist Buck pick up. He never went to a home empty-handed and Buck never felt like a guest anywhere, so it was a miracle Eddie had convinced him to grab it in the first place.
“He loves kids. Babies, toddlers, eight-year-olds with cute dads,” Maddie teased, winking at Eddie when he tried to stifle a laugh. “Even when we were teenagers, he was always looking after younger kids. Saving them from bullies, playing with them when they had no friends, sitting with them at family gatherings. It’s probably cause he’s such a kid at heart,” Maddie said, watching her brother fondly as he set Jee-Yun back down and walked over.
He wrapped his arms around Eddie’s waist before he said, “She’s the cutest baby I’ve ever seen, Maddie. Are you sure she’s yours and Chimney’s?” Maddie smacked him with the towel she had over her shoulder and rolled her eyes.
“Here I was telling your boyfriend all about how great you are with kids, alluding to what a great dad you’ll be someday,” she said pointedly causing both of them to go wide-eyed, “and you insult me. Little brothers are always so ungrateful.”
“I’ll be sure to tell Christopher that,” Eddie chuckled. He froze when he realized what he had said and had never been more grateful for a doorbell in his life.
The rest of the team and their families arrived over the next few minutes and all of Eddie’s nerves washed away just like they had the first time. He was comfortable around his team, around the people he trusted every day with his life, and with much more than that if he was honest with himself. More importantly, Buck was a calming weight beside him that reminded him he wasn’t alone.
“Howie and I thought it would be fun to do our little version of The Newlywed Game,” Maddie said once everyone had their drink of choice in hand. “So, everyone have a seat…” She gestured around, frowning at what Eddie assumed was the shortage of chairs.
“I counted out before—”
“You forgot to include yourself, didn’t you?” Maddie guessed and Chim didn’t say she was wrong. Eddie shrugged and stood behind the comfortable recliner Buck had planted himself in, reaching around to rest his hands on Buck’s shoulders and massaging gently.
“Hey, that’s okay,” Eddie said quickly, not wanting to be the person that inconvenienced the rest of the party. “I’m totally good with standing and I’ll kick his lazy ass out of the chair if he gets too annoying,” Eddie added when Maddie stared worriedly in his direction. Eddie winked at her as Buck gasped dramatically, tugging on one of Eddie’s hands.
“You wouldn’t dare,” Buck challenged and Eddie wouldn’t admit he was right. “Besides, this chair is absolutely big enough to support the two of us, even if you’ve been eating extra bites of the desserts Christopher and I make when we’re not looking,” Buck accused.
“No, seriously, Buck, it’s—” He was already tumbling onto Buck’s lap before he could finish his sentence.
It was awkward at first as his hands flew out to try and grab onto the back of the chair and the armrest when he felt himself start falling. Eddie wasn’t a small guy, by any account. He was just under 200 pounds of muscle from years in the military and kept up with his physique with most mornings spent in the gym or hauling around 60 pounds of gear each day. Suddenly, though, he felt so small.
Buck wrapped his arms around Eddie’s waist and rested his chin comfortably in the crook between Eddie’s neck and shoulder. He let his legs fall open so that Eddie could slot between them and Eddie let himself form to Buck’s warm body. He leaned into Buck’s touch, resting his own arms on the ones secured around him, and ignored the incredibly pointed gazes of his team.
Chim tossed his hands up in the air and defeatedly said, “Oh, they’re totally going to win.”
He wasn’t wrong, but Eddie attributed that to the fact that out of all of the couples around them, they were the newest. Hen and Karen had been together the longest out of all of the couples, working on ten years of marriage by the time Eddie joined the team. Bobby and Athena had six years under their belt and were just as ‘disgustingly in love’ as the day they met—Chim’s words, not his. He didn’t have much room to talk, though, because he and Maddie were almost at three years and it would take a crowbar to pry them apart when they were together.
About an hour into the game, Hen made it clear that one of the happy couples would meet their bitter end while Maddie became increasingly more annoyed that Eddie seemed to know more about her brother than she did.
“Why would you possibly know when Eddie and I had our first kiss?” Buck seethed as Maddie rolled her eyes in frustration. “You didn’t even know when you and your husband had your first kiss!” It was the wrong thing to say and they both knew it as Buck hid his face behind Eddie’s neck.
Maddie didn’t care as she yelled, “He’s the one who didn’t know! I was right and I know it!” She grabbed a handful of popcorn from the neatly plated platter in between them and tossed it at Buck, effectively only coating Eddie in the snack. He held his hands up in defense just as Chim did.
“Hey, I was in a hospital bed and I thought we had kissed then. I was on a lot of pain medication, Maddie, you can’t blame me for that!”
“And you can’t throw food at me because your brother is a coward!” Eddie shot back, wriggling in Buck’s lap when he poked his fingers into Eddie’s sides in retaliation.
“Can someone read the next question, please?” Bobby said in that commanding tone that had all of them muffling their laughter and ongoing arguments.
“Alright, Bobby and Athena are up,” Chim said, clapping his hands together. “If you won the lottery, what’s the first thing you’d buy together?” Athena started to write down her answer and Buck attempted to it, leaning over a bit too far considering the space Eddie took up on his lap. Eddie elbowed Buck in the ribs and pulled a face he hoped clearly told him to stop cheating before the team got even angrier at them. Buck pressed a messy kiss to his cheek and pretended he wasn’t even trying to peek.
“What d’ya say, Cap?”
“Athena is too smart to let us spend money on anything. It’s going straight into a college fund for Harry and May,” Bobby answered, crossing his arms over his chest smugly. It was called for because Athena turned over her board to reveal the word COLLEGE spelled out in all caps. She cheered and pressed a big kiss to Bobby’s lips.
“Lucky round, we all knew the answer to that one,” Hen teased, patting Karen’s thigh as she turned toward Chim for their question. “Hit us up, Han. We’re kicking all of your asses,” she commented.
Buck chimed in, “Except for us!” It was a reminder that literally no one needed and they all glared daggers in Buck’s direction. Eddie didn’t mind the way Buck hid behind him that time. He laced their fingers together, bringing one up to his mouth for a soft kiss as Chim read out the next question.
“What was the last date that you went on?” Buck stifled his laughter in Eddie’s shoulder the second both Hen and Karen’s eyes widened in panic. Athena was brazen as always and allowed hers to ring loudly over everyone.
“Oh, c’mon ladies, really?” Athena shouted. Hen glared at her while Karen wrote down—and then crossed out and then wrote something else—on her board. She shook her head guiltily at her wife when the timer buzzed.
“The reason we’re kicking all of your asses is cause you know the answers to those ridiculous questions about your partner’s childhood pet but can’t even remember when you last got them flowers,” Buck pointed out. The looks on everyone’s faces told Eddie that while he shouldn’t have said it, he was absolutely right.
“Yeah, well, what was Eddie’s first job, then?” Maddie shot back to which Eddie sighed because Buck knew the answer to that. They had talked about it one night when Eddie was explaining why he enlisted in the army in the first place.
Buck smirked and answered, “Easy. Technically, he worked construction with his uncle before he turned 18 but he was paid under the table,” he paused for only a moment before finishing, “and he enlisted in the United States Army almost the second he was old enough to.” He held up his hand for a high five but Eddie gauged the looks around him and decided his team already hated him enough for one night.
“Hen, what’s your answer?” He asked, knowing that out of everyone in the room, Hen would be the one to get him out of the situation he found himself in. She took pity, if only so that they could get their round over with, and took a deep breath with her eyes closed.
“Alright, I had the day off three weeks ago but Denny was sick and the day off before that was spent getting the foster twins settled…” Hen looked up at the ceiling and let out the breath she was holding slowly. “We went to that Japanese steak house and sushi bar a few months ago?” Karen cheered and flipped her board over revealing what Eddie assumed was the name of the restaurant Hen had been talking about. Karen leaned over and kissed her wife soundly, both of them glaring over at Buck who waved his hand dismissively.
“Will you stop pissing off our friends, please?” Eddie whispered while Maddie and Chim prepared themselves for their round. Buck shook his head and hiked himself up a little in the chair causing Eddie to immediately panic. He had almost forgotten that the two of them were sharing a damn chair like teenagers who thought they were in love. Eddie made to get up as he said, “Do you need me to—”
Buck grabbed onto his arms and shook his head, smiling softly up at him. “I’m good, just had to reposition. Just let me…” As if Eddie weighed nothing, Buck moved him to a more comfortable position still on his lap and Eddie let out a very embarrassing yelp at the suddenness of the motion. He wasn’t used to being… manhandled, the way Buck had apparently been comfortable with doing.
“We have a spare bedroom if you two need some privacy,” Maddie offered, gesturing over her shoulder and down the hallway. The entire team groaned in displeasure while Buck flipped her off, but she shrugged and mouthed, The offer still stands, in Eddie’s direction.
“Babe, pay attention,” Chim began, earning an eyebrow raise from his wife. He grinned at her as he usually did, and asked, “Describe what you first thought of me in one word.”
“Maddie, now’s your chance to really let him know how you feel,” Buck teased, egging her on with an excited nod of his head. Maddie rolled her eyes in response and as she wrote her answer on the board, she gestured between her and Chim’s heads as if trying to somehow start some telepathic connection.
“I can’t believe Chim somehow found someone just as strange as he is,” Hen muttered much to the agreement of everyone around them. The couple in question didn’t care, though, because they were too busy staring at each other. Eddie thought it was cute, but apparently, everyone else was ready to get on with the game.
“Hey, weirdo, what’s your answer?” Bobby shouted and Buck let out a huff of laughter. It was always nice when Bobby let loose a little and he was seemingly at that point if the name he chose said anything.
“Cute. She thought I was cute,” he answered. Maddie turned her clipboard around slowly, beaming wider each second because she got the answer right. She cheered and pulled Chim into a very full kiss, both of them smiling into it.
“Alright, boys, we’re three for four this round. You get this right or wrong, you still win, so we’re gonna pick the toughest question,” Hen commented and before Buck could argue, Athena held up a hand and raised her eyebrows at him. It was the easiest way to shut him up and everyone there knew it.
“Oh, honey, this one. This is the one,” Athena said, laughter already brightening up her voice. Eddie winced even as Buck squeezed the arm still wrapped around his waist a little tighter in reassurance. Maddie let out a loud laugh before she read the next question out loud.
“Which one of you would Buck say is the most attractive in the relationship?”
“That is so not a fair question!” Buck whined immediately, grabbing the board from his sister to scribble his answer.
Eddie eyed him and at Buck’s inquisitive look, he said, “You answered that incredibly quickly.”
“Hey, no cheating. Eddie, what’s your answer? Who’s more attractive?” Chim asked and then let out a barely contained cackle. “Wait, oh my god, Eddie is either going to say himself which is going to sound extremely narcissistic or Buck is going to have his own name on that board which is the most egotistical answer and man, this question was genius. Athena, I would bow to you if I could.”
Eddie shook his head and glared at his captain’s wife, uncaring that he was there to witness it all. Bobby had a warm smile on his face that Eddie connected to the fact that he was there, with the family he said he wasn’t going to become a part of, laughing and teasing and cuddling up to his boyfriend of almost six months. It wasn’t where Eddie thought he’d be but where Bobby had assumed they’d end up.
He made a mental reminder to thank Bobby later.
“The answer is obviously Buck, but before you start with me,” he pointed at Chim accusingly before he continued, “it’s not because either of us are full of ourselves. It’s because he knows that I would never name myself in any situation. He knows we’re both equally attractive—”
“—And have tested it on many occasions!” Buck interjected but Eddie wasn’t about to explain to his team that they had competitions on who could get the most numbers when they went out together.
“He knows we’re both conventionally attractive men who would possibly fight someone for thinking otherwise but would never actually admit it about ourselves. He also knows that I would just argue with him if he said anything else. So,” he took a deep breath before he finished, “that board says Buck’s name.”
“I don’t think all of that could fit on a whiteboard, Eds,” Buck teased, but he flipped over the board to reveal his own name. Scribbled underneath was one short sentence, squished in the small space. It said, Because Eddie won’t let me say it’s him.
He wasn’t sure what came over him, but all of a sudden, Eddie had his arms tossed around Buck’s neck and their lips pressed together passionately, uncaring that his entire team was watching him. He had never had a connection like the one he had with Buck and this stupid game had solidified to Eddie that the fact they knew each other so well wasn’t all in his head. It made every part of Eddie so incredibly happy.
“Next game night, Buddie stays at home,” Chim said begrudgingly and Eddie didn’t mind that everyone around him agreed. He felt like a teenager again; sitting in the lap of the man he really, really loved, with warm arms wrapped around him, and what felt like a permanent smile on his face.
“Eh, we’ll just take the guest bedroom next time,” Buck shot back. Eddie blushed darker than he had been already, but he didn’t say anything in return. He just let Maddie and Chim tease, Hen and Karen roll their eyes, and Bobby and Athena watch the people they considered their ‘kids’ enjoy the night together.
It was as perfect as perfect could get, Eddie thought. Even when he felt his eyes drooping shut at the end of it all, he knew he would wake up to Buck in his bed and the feeling of family and home etched into his heart. He was starting to believe it would never disappear and he held onto it tighter just to be sure.

The Blackout Arc - 9-1-1 Thoughts/Meta
I love the 9-1-1 structure of starting seasons with a big emergency/disaster and I didn’t want to write anything up until the whole arc was complete. I think they had a lot up in the air from the get go and that for the first two episodes the storylines were split in a way that gave nuance to the pace of the story and that allowed us to reconnect with all of the characters and everything they’ve been going through. They were well balanced so that even when some part of the story fell flat or wasn’t as interesting other parts picked it up. The blackout made for a good background for these three episodes, but I do think that by the third episode it doesn’t much matter that the lights are out.
We got a focus on Eddie in these three episodes. I found using panic attacks to introduce Eddie’s concern about his relationship with Ana fascinating because out of all the characters, Eddie is not the one that we would ever expect to panic and yet he does and it isn’t about the numerous things he’s been through. It brings us back to the root of all of Eddie’s difficulties. After all, it was the loss of Shannon that once put him onto street fighting. For Eddie who was in the Army, situations where he could get injured or where he does get injured do not phase him, but the emotional things (for someone as repressed as him) that’s where he can’t handle it.
The Ana/Eddie relationship has always been portrayed in a way that didn’t endear it to the viewer. Not enough interaction between them, them moving too fast, and Christopher’s involvement. Last season Eddie was already told by Carla that it shouldn’t all be about Chris. And I think that was the moment when Eddie started to really realize that his feelings for Ana were not as strong. But as for Ana, she was jumping right on in and look I didn’t like her because her character just wasn’t developed at all, but I think what the writers did manage to nail was her emotional investment both with Christopher and with Eddie and yet we also see that she’s smart and she can tell that Eddie isn’t all in.
I loved the focus that this also placed on Buck while Buck is trying to figure out what happened to Eddie. Their conversations have been so vital and important and I think Eddie needed Buck to say it for him to realize that things couldn’t keep going the way they were between him and Ana. Not just because Eddie is having so many issues with it, but because to continue it on would make it so much harder on everyone involved. Ana and Christopher included.
The other large storyline is of course Athena’s. And it is the weakest. The least interesting, and the most infuriating. The problem is that it works so hard to make cops the good guys. And as fun as it is to watch Athena be the boss ass bitch that she is, it rubs the wrong way all throughout 5.01 and 5.02. By the time that we arrive at 5.03 it’s already tiring and made worse by having most of the episode be dedicated to finishing that up. Using the autonomous zone and having Athena pretend to not be a cop to get in is all kinds of wrong too especially since this is all painted in a way that makes her actions alright because her son was kidnapped. On top of that there are parts of this storyline that are flimsy and hand-wavy such as a detective being missing for four days before anyone realized.
The third thing that comes into focus is Maddie and her postpartum depression. It plays a smaller role in the three episodes and yet every moment is heartbreaking. And it is just such a powerful and important arc because postpartum depression is real and it isn’t easy to handle and we’ve seen Maddie in the depths of that from the start of the season. How inefficient she feels as a mother and how tired she feels as a person is so palpable and while I was surprised at her decision to leave, I completely understand. She is not fully mentally there to make good choices and yet her choice is an act of love. Love for herself. Love for her baby. In her head she doesn’t believe that she is the best thing for Jee-Yun because of what happened with the tub and how out of it she is, and maybe she’s right in thinking that in her mental state she might make a fatal mistake. I cannot fault her for taking that step back for those reasons. And I hope she’s going somewhere to get help and get better and that when she returns Chim won’t be too hard on her despite how much this has hurt him. We have to remember that Maddie has had such a traumatic life from the way she was raised to her relationship with Doug and everything that came of that and who knows how much of that plays into her depression.
I want to lastly touch on Buck and Taylor. We didn’t see much of them together, which I guess makes sense because they’re both busy with their jobs, but in the one scene where they are together Taylor’s mind is not there with Buck. When Buck finally goes home once the blackout is over, he arrives to an empty apartment and Taylor is on his screen instead of with him. I just wonder at the investment that both Buck and Taylor are putting into it, if any.
Overall I really enjoyed the three episode arc. The blackout was a setting that worked really well both as a metaphor and as a way to make things more interesting for everyone involved. It forced all of the 118 to stay at the station, and it made the few calls we saw them go on all that more interesting. I do think there was too much focus on the rapist and Athena but I’m also glad to be past that as the season continues although I’m sure we might see Harry, Athena, and possibly even Bobby dealing with some trauma of that in the aftermath.

(my @911giftexchange contribution for @brcttshvghes!!) Relationships: Evan "Buck" Buckley/Eddie Diaz (9-1-1 TV) Characters: Evan "Buck" Buckley, Eddie Diaz (9-1-1 TV), Henrietta "Hen" Wilson, Howie "Chimney" Han, Bobby Nash, Athena Grant Additional Tags: First Kiss, Christmas, Secret Santa, Idiots in Love, Mutual Pining
Last Christmas, Eddie had—as Hen would put it—his ‘oh’ moment.
No, it wasn’t when Buck had thrown himself into action to help some random dad see his daughter sing for Christmas.
No, it wasn’t when Eddie caught Buck trying to sneak extra presents (for he and Christopher both) under the Diaz tree.
No, it wasn’t even when some random elf had complimented Buck on his “beautiful family”.
Eddie’s ‘oh’ moment came when Athena announced that she was saving them all from themselves, when he walked into the firehouse loft and saw his kid standing there, beaming like a megawatt spotlight, smiling not only up at his dad but at Buck; and suddenly things clicked into place. Buck had set all of this up, and sure, it was for the whole house... but it was also for him. Buck had done this all, for him. He had Chris in his arms, he had Buck by his side, and Eddie realized—not for the first time, but for the first time with this level of severity—that this was exactly what he wanted, for the rest of his life.
Forever.
Hence the ‘oh’ moment.
(Hen had suggested calling it his ‘no fucking shit, you clueless moron’ moment instead. Eddie had politely declined.)
--
The ‘oh’ moment was one thing. The ‘oh’ moment was great.
Afterward, though, afterward everything was kind of sucky.
Valentine’s Day was rough. Watching Athena lock up a newlywed couple together, that was fun, sure, but seeing Buck with Ali? That was... literal torture.
--
The tsunami sucked. The bomb sucked.
The lawsuit, that really fucking sucked.
But pulling Buck into his arms underneath some shitty Halloween decorations, being back together again, that... that was almost worth it.
Even if he had to watch Buck bat his eyes at Taylor Kelly a few days later.
--
“Why don’t you just tell him?” Hen had asked the next month, sprawled out over the couch in the loft, idly kicking Eddie’s thigh as he groaned, full of Bobby’s turkey and homemade cranberry sauce.
“And risk it all?” Eddie had asked, long since beyond the point where he wanted to even pretend that he didn’t know what Hen was talking about.
And when Abby reappeared in Buck’s life with a fiancée and two stepchildren, Eddie knew staying quiet was the right idea. He wouldn’t risk it. He couldn’t risk it.
--
“Hey, Eds, hand me another nail?”
So now here he was, almost a year later (“A full year of pining, Eddie, seriously, if you don’t say something by New Year’s—“ “I hate you, Hen.”), staring at Buck’s ass as he struggled to hang another loop of garland haphazardly throughout the station.
After a moment of hesitation, he did as he was asked, sighing as he held up another couple of tacks that Buck could push into the wall. “Why are you even doing all of this, Buck? I don’t know if you noticed, but the station was already decorated.” Eddie said with a hum, leaning back against the wall as he looked up to Buck, not-so-subtly admiring the way Buck’s entire body reacted as he laughed.
“Please, it looked like Pottery Barn threw up in here. We needed something other than stark white garland and red ornaments, Eds.” Buck descended down the step ladder and stepped back to admire his handiwork as Eddie looked around the station—as much as he hated to admit it, Buck was absolutely right. The station had been decorated by what looked like the night crew after one too many cups of coffee; too clean, too pristine, all glittering white garland neatly tacked up to every corner with a giant red bauble tacked at every intersection.
Needless to say, once Buck had gotten through with things, it was... definitely far from a professional looking decor job. Buck had rigged up huge wreaths made of fake garland and bows made out of giant, floppy, silver and gold ribbon, and hung them all over the station.
He had all but stapled his hand to the wall hanging up Christmas lights—the old, slowly blinking type, on the thick green cord, the type where if one light went out they all went out. There were twinkling, colorful lights all over the walls, mounds of fake snow around the staircase, big, fake poinsettias all over the kitchen.
At some point in time, while Hen and Chim were passing time upstairs in the loft and Bobby was stuck in his office doing paperwork, Buck had even rigged up his iPhone to play Christmas carols over the entirety of the station PA system (“Don’t worry, Eddie, calls will still come through and cut out over the alarm,” Buck had assured him, and Eddie was struck, not for the first time, with pride as he realized how much planning Buck really put into things like this).
The station was a mess, honestly. It was a jumbled, disorganized, chaotic explosion of Christmas. The station had gone from Pottery Barn to looking like a Yuletide grenade had gone off.
Eddie loved it.
“There! All finished. Back up, Eddie, I’m coming down.” Eddie blinked as he was jerked back into the present, standing back to admire the latest (and apparently the last) wreath that Buck had woven on the wall, acutely aware of the closeness that he and Buck shared as Buck beamed up at his handiwork.
He managed to look away from Buck’s smile—glowing didn’t even begin to cover it—right as Buck turned to look at him, clearing his throat. “Alright, Buck, what gives? Not that I’m mad about the extra decor you’ve doused the place with, but this is even bigger than what we did last year. There another surprise party that I’m supposed to be aware of?” Eddie asked, smiling as Buck threw his head back and laughed.
“No, no, nothing like that,” Buck started, looking over his shoulder as he folded up the ladder, heading back through the gym to the utility closet. “We’re still on for Christmas dinner at the station with everyone’s family, and unless Hen or Bobby has something else planned—because let’s face it, Chim would forget it was Christmas all in all if Maddie didn’t remind him—that’s all that we’re doing as a station. I just figured we needed as much holly-jolly as we could this year.”
His words were innocent enough, but Eddie had known Buck for years now, and the last year had been spent watching Buck a little more… closely than usual. So he knew that Buck’s innocent smile was just a shade on the wrong side of sneaky, how his words were carefully chosen so he wouldn’t be technically lying. Buck was smart—seriously, Eddie didn’t understand how people always forgot that—and they were the kind of things that Eddie would have missed if he wasn’t so… invested.
Sure. Invested. That was the right way to think about it.
“Hey, Eds,” and damn, a nickname shouldn’t bring him that much joy, “can you open the closet up for me?” Buck asked, the smile on his face seemingly innocent as Eddie rose a brow, stepping around him and just taking the ladder from his hands, pushing the door open behind him, not missing the look of surprise on Buck’s face.
“Wait, Eddie—no, I can—“
“Buck, it’s a step ladder, it’s no big deal. Did you take anything else out of the closet, or was it just this?”
“Well no, but it’s just that—“
Before Buck could continue his protest, the Christmas carols died out throughout the station, the siren blaring in its place, and for a split second, Buck looked absolutely crushed, which was weirder than anything else Eddie had witnessed that morning, because Buck loved going out on calls.
The moment was gone in a heartbeat, but it still made Eddie’s mind reel as they darted off to their lockers to suit up, mind racing with questions as Buck was all laughs with Hen as Chim got behind the wheel.
Something was up, and Eddie was going to find out what… even if the day had other plans.
--
There were two ways that shifts around the holidays were destined to go. Either the 118 would be dead quiet, or the crew would be completely dead on their feet.
Unfortunately, today seemed like it would be the latter.
No sooner than they had been cleared from their first call of the day did another roll in, and then another, and then another, to the point where the only time that Eddie had to text his kid was between calls, and the 118 was probably trapped in their turnout gear for a good five hours without a single break.
Buck, to the surprise of absolutely no one, only grew more and more alive with every save—he had an absolute knack for riding the rush that came with the job, and by the time they finally pulled back into the 118, Buck and Eddie couldn’t have been in a more different place in their lives.
“Alright, six calls in five hours. I think I’ve earned a fucking nap.” Eddie grumbled as he slid out of his designated spot next to Buck in the ladder truck, barely even waiting to get to the rack on the wall before he started pulling his turnout gear off, impatiently tugging at his sleeves and kicking his boots off before he bothered to even loosen anything.
While the sound of Buck’s laugh behind him certainly raised his spirit, he still pouted as Buck sauntered up beside him, easily removing his own jacket and boots and hanging them up with a certain sense of maturity that Eddie couldn’t muster at the moment. “Come on Eddie, a nap? Did you turn fifty while I wasn’t looking?” Buck asked, the teasing tone of his voice bringing a smile to Eddie’s face as he shoved Buck’s shoulder playfully.
“Just because you can keep up with Chris’ special blend of all night holiday nonsense doesn’t mean we all can, Buck.” Eddie started, rolling his shoulder as he hung his turnout coat back up. “Right now, he’s probably running Carla through literally every last strip mall in the state, trying to find a perfect present for our Buck, and… uh.” Eddie cut himself off, far too late, cheeks pinking up as he clamped his jaw shut.
He feared the worst for a moment when Buck looked at him with stars in his eyes, thinking that his slip hadn’t gone unnoticed, and he had to work to hide his sigh of relief when Buck grinned. “He’s getting me a gift? I mean, I know he doesn’t have to, and you know he doesn’t have to, but… fuck, Eds, I’m all excited now. Okay. Forget it. Anyway, come on. I want to completely obliterate you in Mario Kart.”
Eddie sighed softly, his smile big and dopey on his face as Buck got himself all excited, shaking his head as he kicked off his boots, finally leaving his gear behind. “Buck, if you think I’m going to add insult to injury and let you completely wipe the floor with me, you’re sorely mistaken.”
“Fine, then you don’t have to play. You can just hang around and bask in my awesome.” Buck said, his effort at being nonchalant almost going over Eddie’s head, just barely catching the sidelong glance that Buck shot him while he was re-lacing his work boots.
He narrowed his eyes for a moment as he watched Buck’s shoulders tighten, sighing as he shook his head. “Fine, but you better fucking dazzle me, Buckley.” he said as he started walking to the tiny corner of the bay they had set up as a miniature rec area (a fancy word for three couches and a big-ass television, courtesy of Chim’s baby brother), but not before he saw the abject joy that bloomed over Buck’s face.
As much as he wanted to believe that that much joy could simply come from Buck getting to spend time on a couch with Eddie, he had a sneaking suspicion, much as he did earlier, that something else was up.
“Who knows, maybe you’ll learn something by osmosis, and actually stand a chance against your kid the next time he—“
Buck was cut off by a bang as the firehouse door hit the wall, a panicked cry pulling Buck and Eddie’s attention as they both automatically started to move.
“Help! Please, please I need help, I don’t think she’s breathing!”
Eddie and Buck were both immediately moving, Chim and Bobby close on their trail as they came down the stairs from the loft, Hen already opening the back of the ambulance and yanking out one of her bags.
Eddie slowed himself down as he reached forward to take the body of a young girl from her clearly distraught mother, Buck already a step ahead of him as he put a braceboard down on the ground, placing her too-small body down on it.
(Eddie still hated situations that involved kids.)
The little girl was conscious, but only barely, wheezing along as Eddie laid her down, taking her pulse instinctively as he gave her a simple once over. “Signs of angioedema, breathing is shallow, pupils are tight, plenty of hives across the neck and chest. Ma’am, does she have any allergies, any—”
“No! I mean, I don’t think so, we tried a new recipe for our christmas cookies this year… uh, almond, maybe? I don’t know!”
“Okay, we’re gonna give her some epinephrine, you need to look into an epi-pen, Buck?”
Buck nodded, grabbing a pen from the ambulance, pressing it against the thickest part of her thigh (she was so tiny, Jesus) and plunging the needle into her skin. “Alright, now, we’re going to take her to the hospital, so hop in the ambulance—” Bobby started, nodding to the vehicle as Hen and Chim jumped into the drivers cab, “—and you can ride with or follow along, whatever you want.”
Eddie and Buck had the gurney popped up in a heartbeat, wheeling it in the back of the rig as mother and daughter were loaded up, doors slamming behind the pair of them as Hen practically burned rubber.
Eddie felt his heart rate start to slow back down to a regular, human level as the ambulance tore out of the bay, and even he couldn’t keep the small smile on his face as he turned back to Buck, expecting the expression to be mirrored on his partner’s face.
So, you could imagine his surprise when Buck just looked… tired.
“Buck? You good? You still wanna get a round of the… uh… whatever?”
He rose a brow as Buck hitched his smile back on, giving a half shrug as he shook his head. “Nah, Eddie, it’s good. I’m gonna get started on Bobby’s chore list.”
With that, he started up the stairs to the kitchen, and Eddie was left in the metaphorical dust, staring up to Buck’s retreating backside as he was left alone on the main floor of the 118.
The fuck was going on?
--
buck fifty: why do i have to clean the kitchen if bobby and athena are just going to be cooking in an hour anyway
sent: Because, Buck, normal people clean the areas where they’re going to be preparing food.
buck fifty: miss me with that logic i havent had food poisoning in weeks dont @ me bro
Eddie let out a breathy bark of a laugh as he pushed up on the leg press again, his back drenched in sweat as he read over Buck’s reply. As much as he hated doing anything even remotely close to leg day, he figured that now was the time to work it out—a workout did better than a nap to help him wind down from back-to-back calls (and a near poisoning, Hen and Chim weren’t even back from the hospital yet), but it was a great way to keep his hands free so he could text Buck.
It was kind of sad, honestly, how many decisions that he made in his day to day life that were focused on Buck.
Today, though, the mission was a little more ‘what the fuck is up with Buck’ than it was anything else—Buck was a weird dude, sure, but he was acting jumpy and weird all fucking day today. Even in the moments when they were out on call, and Buck was in the zone, he still felt a little… off.
It was like there was a fucking satellite delay between them, and there had been all day. Eddie usually prided himself on being able to read a room, but today, it was like Buck was intentionally throwing walls his way.
Not that he was that attuned to Buck’s everyday emotions and mood, anyway. Nope. Definitely not.
fuck.
sent: Why don’t you come down here and do a few reps with me? Burn off some of that energy.
sent: Oh, wait, that isn’t an option for you yet. How sad.
buck fifty: look its not my fault that you happened to finish your chores earlier and i didnt
sent: …Buck, that is 100% your own fault. Are you good today? You’re weirding me out.
“Hello, 118! Did someone order a chef?” Eddie looked up as he heard Athena’s voice echo throughout the station, a smile on his face as he waved over to her. He loved the way that she had fit together with the station so well, and how she and Bobby got along as well as they did (even if he felt like he had to pay for it whenever Hen shot him a knowing look, less and less subtle with each passing day… okay, month), but he loved even more that she usually brought food, especially now, in what Eddie sincerely hoped would be a new tradition — Christmas dinner with his work family.
Make no mistake, Bobby’s cooking was phenomenal, but there was something about Athena’s family style everything that settled right in Eddie’s soul.
Maybe it was because she had the uncanny knack at seeing through his bullshit and calling him on anything and everything that he tried to pull when she was around, in a way that was both kind and hilariously firm.
Or maybe it was because she actually understood how to make a decent tex-mex meal.
Either way.
“Eddie, where’s our boys?”
Eddie looked up as Athena closed the distance to his machine in the gym, smiling as he did another rep. “Hey Athena. Buck’s cleaning up the kitchen, getting ready for you and Bobby.” he said easily, his legs giving a little wobble as he realized what he had said, eyes snapping to her easily. “Uh, I mean—“
“Diaz, please, we both know that was who I was talking about.” Athena said, cutting him off before he could answer, the knowing smile on her face making Eddie wish the ground would open him up and swallow him whole, but apparently LA was fresh out of earthquakes for the moment. Thankfully, Athena took some pity on him, keeping the conversation moving easily as she looked around the station. “I see he got a hold of the decorations. Good, the place looked too… clean before.” she said, and Eddie laughed even as his face flushed red, swinging his legs off the machine, the familiar burn in his thighs anchoring him in the moment. “Yeah, it really did. Buck said it looked like a Pottery Barn threw up.”
Eddie shook his head as Athena laughed, that same smile on her face again, but it was different now—easy, familiar, like she was seeing the answer to a puzzle that Eddie only had half the pieces to. “He’s a good man, Eddie. Both of you are. It’s just such a shame neither of you would know what healthy communication was if it bit you in the ass.” She said, shaking her head dramatically as she started up the stairs, leaving a completely baffled Eddie to grab his phone off of the machine as it buzzed again.
What the hell was she talking about? He and Buck communicated all the time.
buck fifty: ok now you have to help me
buck fifty: if athena and bobby are going to be in the kitchen together im going to wind up drowning in mushy
sent: How is that my problem? And don’t think you got by avoiding my other question.
buck fifty: eddie plz
sent: Use your words, Buck.
buck fifty: u gotta get up here and save me
sent: Have you cleaned out the oven yet?
buck fifty: ………
buck fifty: save me by helping me clean the oven
Okay, Eddie may have already lost the fight, but—
buck fifty: pleeeeeeeeeease
—but that didn’t mean he had to admit how wrapped around Buck’s pinky he was. He could still whine about it, he could still complain about it, he could still bring this up the next time he and Buck argued about who’s turn it was to go and answer the door when they ordered takeout. Cleaning the oven, that was absolutely something he could hold over Buck forever.
He made a quick detour to the locker room to change out of his gym clothes as he heard Athena greet the boys upstairs, his own smile begrudgingly pasted on as he remembered what Athena had said.
His boy. She had called Buck his boy.
It was… well, it was nice to dream.
He was basically floating on air as he made his way up the stairs, to the point where he almost walked straight until Bobby’s chest from where he stood at the top of the stairs. He let out a very masculine noise as he jumped back, nearly dropping his phone as Bobby clucked his tongue.
“Nope, Eddie, you know the rules. You and your black thumb need to stay far from the kitchen while we’re cooking.”
Eddie tried to sputter out a protest even as Athena laughed from her position near the fridge, unloading what looked like an actual mountain of groceries. “Come on Bobby, I’m sure he can’t be that bad—“
“He’s burned pasta, Athena.”
“That was one time!”
Eddie felt his face heat up as Buck immediately came to his defense, equal parts pleased and perturbed, as Bobby shook his head. “Not taking that chance, kid. Especially not while Athena is armed with two whole hams. Come on, go downstairs, shower up, and then we can find a way for you to help get ready for dinner that keeps you far away from the kitchen.”
“Cmon, Bobby—“
“Buck, you can clean the oven on your own. Now let’s go, we all got work to do.”
Eddie felt his mouth snap shut as Bobby dismissed him—not unkindly, nothing that Eddie hadn’t heard before, but the way that Buck was looking over at them was nothing short of tragic. He hadn’t seen Buck look that defeated since their run in at the grocery store in the midst of the lawsuit-that-they-didn’t-talk-about-seriously-Buck-we-both-apologized-it’s-fine.
Eddie’s brain continued to churn as he showered, nearly drowning himself beneath the scalding hot water as he tried to understand what the fuck was going on.
Buck had been acting weird. Which, honestly, wasn’t that unusual for Buck. Buck was a good man. He had his heart on his sleeve, like, constantly. He was happy when he was happy, he was sad when he was sad, and there was no hiding it when he was down.
And now, somehow, Eddie was bringing him down.
Or… when Eddie really thought about it, the lack of Eddie was bringing him down…
Eddie didn’t get to spend time with Buck, and Buck looked like someone had just stamped out his dreams.
And that… that was interesting.
The last piece of the puzzle finally sank into place as he toweled off his hair and stepped out of the locker room, right in time to hear Athena’s laugh ring through the station. He looked up to the loft in time to see Bobby dipping her into a kiss, but that wasn’t where his eyes focused—no, they were instead focusing on something red and green. Something red and green and small and something that was definitely not there before Buck started his redecorations this morning, hanging in front of the oven.
The oven that he was supposed to help Buck clean.
Eddie felt his eyes narrow as he looked around the station, trying to retrace his steps throughout the station from the moment he walked in that morning. The utility closet… the recreation area… and back to the kitchen again.
He felt a small smile, in spite of himself, spread across his face, something dangerously close to hope blooming in his chest. Fate seemed to smile on him as Hen and Chim pulled back into the firehouse bay, and he took the opportunity to smack Hen’s arm as she walked past him.
“Ow, Eddie, what the f—“
“I’m gonna risk it, Hen.” Eddie said, effectively cutting her off, knowing that she would pick up on what he meant immediately. “But I need some help. You got a minute?”
--
“Buckaroo, will you take these plates down to the table? Here, bring Eddie some silverware.”
“Yeah, no problem Chim.”
Eddie elbowed Hen away from him as Buck started down the stairs, trying his best to act like he was doing anything but listening up the stairs. He and Hen had been busy setting up the table (and a few other things) while Chim was assigned on running interference upstairs, which turned out to be the easiest job of all while Buck… well, while Buck moped.
Eddie hated Buck moping. Almost as much as he hated how cute he thought it was, now that he knew what Buck was up to.
Or, at least, he thought he knew what Buck was up to. He was still painfully aware of how wrong this could all go—maybe it was the magic of the season, maybe it was a year in the making, maybe it was Hen egging him on, but Eddie…
Eddie actually felt like he could do this.
Even if it meant that he had to play completely oblivious in the meantime.
“Alright, Buck,” Eddie started, taking the stack of plates out of Buck’s hand, somehow fighting the smile as Buck handed them over, “what’s wrong? You’ve been acting weird all day.”
Buck grumbled as he tugged at the corner of the table cloth, straightening out a few placemats as he shrugged. “Nothing, Eds, I’m fine. Just a weird day, I guess. Dinner should be good, though!” Buck said, hiking a smile up onto his face. Eddie did his best to hide a little laugh as he nodded to Hen, who had slipped into the cab of the ladder truck.
“Buck, come on. I’ve known you for years, you’re not fine. Weird, yes. Fine, no.”
Buck stuck out his tongue as he started to dole out forks and knives, the little lighthearted gesture doing something to ease the worry that Eddie felt at the base of his spine, but he could still see the tension coiled through his best friends shoulders.
“Seriously, Buck, I—“
“It’s fine, Eddie! I just…” Buck’s shoulder slumped as he started to deflate, the harsh tone of his voice giving way as his face flushed. Setting the last fork down, he started to pace in earnest, speaking with his hands as much as he was with his voice. “I just had a certain thought about how things might go this year, and fate, or destiny, or whatever, has made it very clear that’s not going to be how it goes. I dunno, I thought I could make things… different, or special or whatever?” he started, and Eddie seriously had to swallow the words that were threatening to spill over his lips.
Buck wanted to make things special. Buck wanted to make things special. For him. Like Buck didn’t do that kind of thing every day simply by existing.
“Anyway, it doesn’t matter, you don’t have to worry about it.” Buck sighed as he put the last fork down and started pacing at the head of the table, and Eddie had to make sure his voice wasn’t going to waver when he spoke again.
“It still can be special, Buck—“
“Eds, it’s whatever. It was stupid anyway.”
“Buck.”
“No, Eddie, it’s okay, I shouldn’t have—“
“Buck. Stop. Breathe.”
Eddie grabbed both of Buck’s shoulders to stop him from pacing, raising his eyebrows as Buck finally made eye contact with him.
“Are you breathing? Okay. Great. Good. Now look up.”
“Eds, what are you talking about?”
“Buck, for the love of God, listen to me for once in your life and just look up.”
Eddie took a moment to savor the complete confusion written on Buck’s face as he finally comprehended what Eddie was asking (with a murmured complaint of “I always listen to you”), and Eddie let his eyes lock on to Buck’s face. Mostly because he wanted to see Buck’s reaction, but partially because he was afraid of what said reaction would be. Even if Buck was seeing the mistletoe above them for the first time, that Eddie had painstakingly tied to the top rung of the ladder that Hen had extended over the table from the truck, this was the moment of truth—and Eddie already knew what was up there.
Besides, Buck was a much better view than some green garnish.
“That’s, uhm.” Buck started, and Eddie finally gave up trying to keep the smile off his face. “That’s mistletoe.”
Eddie hummed thoughtfully as Buck looked back to him, “It is. I pulled some from the kitchen, found a sprig near the rec room, one from the utility closet…”
Buck actually had the decency to look surprised as he looked back to Eddie, literal stars in his eyes. “And you… put them together. And tied them to the ladder, and… got me to stand under it with you.” Buck continued, slowly, and Eddie gave a little chuckle as he nodded his head, taking a step closer. “I did. I mean, unless I’m misreading this entire situation, in which case I have no idea what you’re talking about, and if that’s the case, I’m going to go dig a hole out back and throw myself—mmhph.”
Eddie was more thankful than anything when Buck took the step forward to close the distance between them before he could start rambling, one hand on Eddie’s jaw to tilt it up (god he loved that Buck was taller than he was), the other warm and heavy on his hip (god, he loved Buck’s strong hands), lips slotting together with an ease that Eddie had never experienced with a first kiss before (god, he loved kissing Buck).
He also loved Hen and Chim, because no sooner did Chim hit the switch near the bay doors to dim the lights around the ladder truck did Hen manage to restart Buck’s Christmas playlist, Irving Berlin’s voice crooning about a white Christmas over the station speakers as Eddie’s arms wrapped around Buck’s neck.
When they finally pulled back to breathe, Eddie found himself tiptoeing up to chase Buck’s lips, his face flushing bright red afterward when he realized what he had done. They both started laughing as Buck’s hands dropped down to Eddie’s waist, Eddie following suit and letting his hands rest on Buck’s shoulders, fitting together in a way that Eddie had only imagined.
“So… I guess the mistletoe worked out for you in the end.” Eddie said with a smile, and Buck laughed, shaking his head, that beautiful ruddy color staining his cheeks again. “Eds, I, uh… I’ve kind of been working up the courage to do something like this for weeks.” He said sheepishly, and Eddie couldn’t help but laugh, smacking Buck’s shoulder.
“Weeks? To think, you still had months to go before you were anywhere close to my level.” Eddie said as he pulled away, sighing as he smoothed over Buck’s collar, a smile on his face as he turned and left a stunned Buck in his wake.
“Wait, Eddie, what?”
Eddie shook his head as he walked back into the locker room, Buck following suit shortly after.
“Eds, no, wait! How long did I pine without needing to?? Eddie!!”

Trying to escape from his bodyguards is becoming a full time job.
Lucky for Buck, he’s been doing it since he was a toddler. Bobby never learns, always puts bodyguards with too much spine on Buck duty, as if he doesn’t already know Buck hates those types.
“it’s for your protection,” Athena always says with raised eyebrows.
Buck gets crushed one time in a freak accident and suddenly everyone wants him kept in bubble wrap. Under wraps. Heh.
The pier is packed with people—Buck doesn’t pick his battles as well as he evades bodyguards and press—and Buck navigates them easily. Most people don’t pay him any notice, which works for him, and he manages to hover around a couple of stalls without getting his picture splashed onto social media.
Buck catches sight of a kid with crutches on his own, looking at the people around him. When he was a kid, fresh in the state, Buck remembers getting lost because his bodyguards have always sucked, and he knows how terrifying it can be. He can’t help himself; he jogs up to the kid. “Hey, you alright?”
The kid immediately looks up, face shifting between emotions quickly. “My dad says I shouldn’t talk to strangers.”
“And he is absolutely correct,” Buck says, trying to think of something that will help him get this kid found.
The boy’s eyes widened. “You’re the prince.”
“Ssh,” Buck says, pressing a finger to his lips and crouching down. He doesn’t think anyone around them has heard; nobody’s immediately stopping and demanding his attention. “Let’s keep that a secret for now, okay? Think we can catch up with your school?”
There’s a moment’s hesitation. “I’m not here with my school. Ms. Ingrid takes care of me when my Daddy works. She gets mad I can’t keep up.”
Buck feels a momentary flash of anger but covers it with a grin. “Do you know if Ms. Ingrid has a phone number we can call?”
“No,” the boy says. “She doesn’t give it to me. She says I’m too stupid to remember but my dad says I’m smart.”
Buck’s chest tightens further with anger but he crouches down, gives Chris the brightest smile he can. “I think I believe your dad, buddy. Do you know if he has a number?”
“Yes,” the kid says brightly, then his face falls. “It’s in my coat and Ms. Ingrid left it in the car.”
Ms. Ingrid is definitely Buck’s least favourite person. “Well, I’m gonna call some people myself, alright? Wanna find somewhere to sit until they get here and help us find your dad?”
“Okay,” the kid says. “He’s a firefighter but I don’t know where.”
Filing the knowledge away where he’ll probably never use it, Buck finds a nearby bench and directs the kid to it. He doesn’t know the protocol for this kind of thing, and if anyone sees, they might think he’s kidnapping the kid or something. He’ll cross that bridge when he comes to it. “My name’s Buck.”
“I thought it was Evan,” the kid says, tilting his head back.
“My friends call me Buck,” Buck says carefully.
The boy’s smile is blinding. “My friends call me Chris! My name’s Chris. Except when my dad’s mad or worried.”
Buck laughs gently; yeah, he knows those kinds of problems. “My dad gets like that too.”
Chris nods. “My dad says King Bobby is awesome.”
“That he is,” Buck says. He can’t wait to use that particular adjective on Bobby. “Right, let me just call for help, okay?”
Chris seems content to sit next to him on the bench, watching people go by. Buck pulls out his phone and bypasses his bodyguards, going straight for Hen. She’s managed to dig him out of several scrapes and he kinda needs her advice.
“—Why I even bother!” Hen’s yelling decreases and Buck gives Chris a funny look. Chris giggles and Buck hears Hen’s sigh. “That the kid?”
“Yep,” Buck says. “I don’t know where his chaperone is and I know people are starting to notice me. Any chance we can find this kid’s parents?”
“Just dad,” Chris adds helpfully. “Eddie Diaz, and he’s a firefighter. Mom’s dead.”
Buck’s heart lurches painfully. “I’m sorry to hear that, buddy.”
“It’s okay a lot of the time,” Chris says, though he looks a little sad. “Dad makes it more okay.”
There’s clacking from the other end of the phone and Buck tunes back into the conversation, keeping a hand on Chris’ shoulders. “Found him. I’ll call him and the cops. Please stay where you are.”
That means bodyguards. Buck rolls his eyes, but does as he’s told and waits.
It takes about ten minutes for help to arrive in the form of Buck’s bodyguards. Bobby’s gonna be having people fired at the end of this, but Buck’s glad to have some friendly faces around. Thankfully, they don’t try to hustle him off the pier, and Buck assumes Hen’s contacted them and managed to get things under control.
Not long after, the cops arrive with an unimpressed Chim.
“What the hell?”
“Look,” Buck starts.
“No, I don’t wanna hear it,” Chim says, pinching the bridge of his nose. “Cops, Buck, really?”
“It’s fine,” Buck stresses. “Whoever’s chaperoning Chris—”
“That would be me,” an unimpressed voice says.
Chris shifts closer to Buck and whispers, “That’s Ms. Ingrid.”
“Christopher,” Ingrid says, and Buck hates her on sight. “What have I said about wandering off?”
“I didn’t,” Chris starts.
“And lying,” Ms. Ingrid stresses. She looks at Buck—and he sees the flicker that she recognizes him—but immediately turns to the cops. “This man is kidnapping!”
“Hey now,” Buck says.
“No he isn’t!” Chris cries.
“I highly doubt that,” a new voice puts in.
Buck looks up and fuck, that is one handsome man. He’s striding through the crowd, anger clear on his face, and Chris immediately perks up from behind Buck.
“Dad!”
The man sweeps in, hugs Christopher tightly, and Buck’s heart hammers against his chest for reasons he can’t explain. “Christopher.”
“Told you,” Chris says, looking up at Buck, and Buck can’t help laughing. He stops as soon as Chris’ dad stands, eyes narrowing. It takes a beat, two for him to realize who he’s staring at.
“Oh shit,” he says. “Uh, I mean, your Highness.”
“Oh god, don’t,” Buck groans. “Listen, it’s—”
“Dad,” Chris says, smiling widely, “this is Buck! He stopped me getting lost when Ms. Ingrid went ahead and—”
“I did not,” Ingrid stresses.
Chris’ dad—Eddie, apparently—looks thunderous. “This isn’t the first time.”
Ingrid bristles, and Buck ignores Chim’s warning look to interject. “Chris was by himself,” he says, quietly when Eddie turns the full force of his gaze on him. It sends a shiver up Buck’s spine and makes him want to do whatever it’ll take to get Eddie to stay. What. The fuck. Ignoring it, Buck continues. “I didn’t know what else to do but have someone call you.”
“I appreciate it,” Eddie says.
“Bo—your father is going to kill you,” Hen says, coming up behind Chim. Buck groans internally. Now that they’re both here, Buck’s in a world of trouble.
“It wasn’t Buck’s fault,” Chris says immediately. “He was helping me!”
Hen looks amused more than irritated, and Buck grins, knows Chris is winning her over already. Maybe she won’t eviscerate him once this is over. “Is that right?”
Chris nods. “Please don’t be mad, Ma’am. Dad says we should be grateful to people who help us.”
“Should we?” Hen says.
Chris’ dad flushes, hands on Christopher’s shoulders. “Buddy, I think we should—”
“Please don’t go,” Buck says immediately. He knows how it sounds and can feel his own cheeks heat up. “Let me sort things with the cops and then we can talk or something, I just want—”
“I don’t think that’s a good idea,” Hen and Christopher’s dad say at the same time.
Buck deflates, crouching down in front of Chris. “I’m glad we met, buddy.”
“Me too,” Chris says, looking sad. “Am I allowed to hug a prince?”
Though his bodyguards might throw a fit, Buck doesn’t give a fuck. “You absolutely are.”
Chris moves forward a step, wrapping his arms around Buck’s shoulders. Buck squeezes him gently, breathing in a scent that’s oddly familiar, though he can’t pinpoint how. When he pulls back, he gives Chris a bright smile.
“I’m glad I met you, Christopher.”
“Me too.” Chris says. “I wish we could be friends for longer.”
Buck feels something settle in his chest, an uncomfortably tight feeling. “Yeah. But you have to do something, alright? Make sure you always keep smiling and definitely make sure to take care of your dad.”
Chris nods and Buck doesn’t know what to make of the indecipherable look on Eddie’s face.
“This is ridiculous,” Ingrid snaps. “He doesn’t get accused of kidnapping because he’s a prince?”
“I didn’t kidnap him,” Buck puts in.
“Hey,” Eddie says, stepping between Buck and Ingrid. “I left Chris in your care and you abused it. I won’t be paying for today’s session and you can guarantee I won’t be sending Chris to you again.”
“We have a contract,” Ingrid starts.
“Voided,” Hen cuts in. “If you like, we can talk about it with the cops.” Placing a hand on Ingrid’s shoulder, Hen steers her away and Buck lets out a slow breath.
Eddie’s still standing in front of him looking angry and Buck wants to wipe the expression off his face.
“Thank you.”
“For what?” Eddie asks, genuinely surprised.
“You didn’t have to step in. For all you know, I could have kidnapped your kid.”
“You didn’t,” Eddie says immediately.
Buck doesn’t want to argue, he doesn’t, but his mouth is already saying, “how do you know,” before he can stop it.
There’s a strange expression on Eddie’s face, like he’s not sure himself, but he’s shaking it off. “Chris says you didn’t. I trust my son.”
“Then I’m glad I met Chris,” Buck says, smiling down at Chris, who grins. “You have a pretty awesome kid, Mr. Diaz.”
“Eddie.” Making a face, Eddie’s lips quirk up into a soft smile. “I’m only Mr. Diaz when I have to be.”
Buck laughs at that, though he doesn’t know why; it’s not particularly funny. Something about Eddie puts him instantly at ease. “Well, it was nice to meet you, Eddie.”
“You too,” Eddie says, holding his hand.
It’s easy enough for Buck to place his hand in Eddie’s with every intent to shake it. As soon as their palms touch, Buck feels hot, his body burning from head to foot. He can’t stop staring at Eddie, who’s watching him back, mouth open, eyes wide. Buck wants to get lost in them, can’t help but move forward. Eddie meets him halfway, free hand coming up to touch Buck’s cheek. Every place they touch has Buck tingling and he breathes out a soft noise.
Eddie moves forward, crashing his lips to Buck’s. It’s instantaneous, the build up of emotion and it rushes in, fills every part of Buck’s head until he’s dizzy with it. He’s accepting the bond, he knows, letting Eddie consume him, and Eddie’s doing the same otherwise it wouldn’t work and he—
“Uh,” he says when he wakes up.
“Idiot,” a familiar voice replies. Chim, Buck thinks, cracking open one eye. “Wake up, Princess.”
“Prince, actually,” Buck says, and his head is pounding. “What happened?”
There’s enough of a silence that Buck opens his eyes. He’s laying on the ground. Wood. Sounds of the pier rush in at the same time the memories do and he jerks up, frantically looking for Eddie.
“I’m right here,” Eddie assures him, and there’s a hand on the back of his head. “You passed out.”
“Oops,” Buck says, and closes his eyes again. “I think I’m gonna throw up.”
There’s a soft press of lips to his head. Buck tingles. Eddie breathes. “Is that normal?”
“I don’t know,” Chim says, sounding put-out. “Hen’s the soulbond expert.”
“Oh,” Buck says. “We bonded.”
Another silence.
“I don’t mind,” Buck says, groping around, satisfied when Eddie’s fingers tangle with his.
“I’m a widower,” Eddie says gently, his voice low. When Buck opens his eyes again, trying to ignore the swirl of anxiety deep in his chest that he knows doesn’t belong to him, he can see the fear on Eddie’s face. Eddie swallows, looks over to Chris, who’s being looked after by an attentive Hen. “I have a kid and a shit ton of baggage.”
Buck knows what this is and he doesn’t like it. He leans in, forehead against Eddie’s shoulder and thankfully, Chim leaves them to it. “I don’t care.”
“Evan—”
“Buck,” Buck says helplessly.
Eddie sounds worried, but Buck can feel his heart pounding beneath his cheek, an emotion strong in Eddie’s mind that Buck doesn’t dare name. “Buck.”
“I get it’s a lot,” Buck says quietly. “I’m a prince and I’m—well I’m sure you know.”
“I read things,” Eddie admits, hand resting on the back of Buck’s head. He starts stroking, gently, and Buck wants it forever. “I don’t know you.”
“We can learn.” Buck doesn’t want to pull back, but he needs to look Eddie in the eye. “If you want.”
Eddie’s smile could light a thousand dark days. “Alright.”
“Good,” Buck says and leans in, kisses Eddie again. It’ll never get old, he thinks, and then looks up as the clatter of crutches on wood drags his attention away from what Eddie tastes like.
“Buck!” Chris pauses. “Are you okay?”
“I am now, Chris,” Buck assures him.
Chris looks at Eddie, then Buck, then back to Eddie. “Is Buck your friend, Dad?”
“I think it’s a little more complicated than that,” Hen says, looking at Buck pointedly.
“Bobby’s going to kill me,” Buck groans.
“As in King Bobby?” Eddie says, going instantly pale.
Buck nods.
“Oh, shit, you’re a prince,” Eddie says.
“Yeah.” Buck speaks slowly. “You know this.”
“Does this make Dad a prince too?”
Oh. Oh shit, Buck’s going to die.
Chim raises his eyebrows. “Oh no, neither of you are going anywhere. We’re going back to the palace to explain this.”
“Yay,” Chris cheers.
“Awesome,” Buck says, heavy with sarcasm.
“I think I’m gonna throw up,” Eddie replies.
Buck stares at him, feels the thrum of fear from Eddie. Beneath it is a rush of warmth, pride, and adoration. Love, Buck thinks. It’s love. “We’re gonna be fine,” he blurts, hopeful.
It takes a moment, but Eddie nods, touching Buck’s face again. “Yeah. Yeah, we are.”

But to piggy back on your other anon, Christopher, Harry, or Denny brings home a bad grade on a report card and one of the parents are talking about it and Buck over hears and just freaks out because he doesn't want the kids to get the same punishments that he had growing up, queue horrified realization.
Good People. Bad Parents.
tw: abuse
Buck comes limping out of the lockers, freshly bathed, hair still wet and curly at the ends, a complete turnaround from earlier, when he’d jumped down into the sewers for a rescue mission.
“How’s the leg?” Bobby meets him halfway and despite Buck’s insistence that he’s just fine, the Captain helps him get over to the lounge, where he can sit and rest comfortably.
“I’m good.” It was just his ankle, after all, nothing too bad. Not as bad as falling face first into the filthy sewer water when the unmaintained ladder he was climbing down decided to snap in two. The drop hadn’t been too far down, thankfully, and Buck had come out of it relatively unscathed, save for a twisted ankle and some minor scrapes and bruises.
“Give it here.” Eddie gently raises Buck’s injured leg so that it’s resting atop his lap and places a cool ice pack over the inflamed ankle.
Buck hisses at the cold but doesn’t complain, letting Eddie take care of him.
Chim leans over with an alcohol swab and starts disinfecting all the little cuts and bruises on the side of Buck’s face and his elbows. “Stay still.”
Buck whines. “But it stings.”
Bobby rolls his eyes, smiling at the bickering. “Chim, be nice.”
Buck sticks his tongue out at Chim and Eddie laughs at the indignant look on his face. Hen joins the crew a few moments later, having hung up the phone with her wife, sighing as she sit down.
“Everything alright?” Bobby asks, tilting his head curiously at the sour look on her face.
“Denny stuck a piece of gum in his hair at school today.” she huffs out an irritated breath. “Karen’s pissed. She had to take him to get it cut out, it was so glued in there.”
Chim’s eyes go wide. “God, not the hair.”
“She’s gonna send me photos later, I don’t even want to see.” Hen shakes her head. “He’s in big trouble when I get home, though, you can be sure of that.”
Eddie grimaces in sympathy with her. “I don’t know what I’d do if Christopher did that. Abuela is obsessed with his hair---she’d be devastated.”
“Hey, Buck, you alright?” Bobby asks, noticing how stiff Buck has gone since the start of their conversation. Pale, too. Did he manage to catch something, trudging down there in the sewers today?
Buck blinks, “Huh?” he shakes his head. “Yeah, yeah, um,” he turns back to look at Hen, his brows knitted together in concern. “He’s just a kid, I’m sure he’s sorry.”
Hen scoffs. “He’s sure as hell gonna be; I’ve told that boy a million times to stop playing with gum, I don’t even know where he got some.”
“I mean, it’s just hair,” Buck gulps, “It’ll grow back.”
Chim shrugs. “Maybe it’s cause I don’t have kids of my own yet, but I gotta say, I agree with Buckaroo here. What’s the big deal?”
“We’re lucky he stuck that gum in his hair and not a classmates.” Hen groans. “If you let ‘em get away with the small stuff later on it’s mayhem, trust me.”
Eddie nods in agreement. “I remember I cut my sister’s hair into these ugly ass bangs when I was around Christopher’s age. It was right before picture day, too, I was grounded for like a month.”
Buck looks at him, surprised. “Just grounded? I would have gotten the hard side of the belt for something like that. Or at least made to sleep outside.”
Chim balks. “Wait, back up, your parents made you sleep outside?”
Eddie almost loses his grip on the ice pack. “And did you say the hard side of the belt?”
Buck stares at the both of them like they’re the ones who aren’t making any sense. “Well, yeah, duh.” he shrugs. “They were strict. It wasn’t that bad. Like, if I got a bad grade at school I had to sleep outside and skip dinner or something. It wasn’t always the belt.”
“They wouldn’t let you eat?” Bobby can feel his pulse skyrocketing, he’s so mad.
“No, but that’s only if I messed up in school.” Buck reasons, confused by the abject horror on everyone’s faces.
Hen is reeling. “Buck, that’s not---wait, even in the winter? They would make you sleep outside then?”
“No, of course not.” Buck denies. “They’d just make me sleep in the basement. It was still pretty cold and they’d get mad if I tried to turn on the lights, so it was kind of scary,” he admits, “But still way better than sleeping in the snow.” the way Buck says that, sounds like he’s talking from experience.
“Buck, is that why you don’t want me to punish Denny?” she asks, soft.
“Denny’s a good kid.” Buck insists, biting his bottom lip nervously. He was a rambunctious, loud and frankly, annoying kid, he deserved everything he got. “He doesn’t deserve to get punished.”
“Neither did you.” Bobby interrupts firmly. “Buck, I think Hen meant she was going to ground him, or maybe take away a toy he likes to play with, right?”
Hen nods. “Of course. Buck, I would never hurt Denny or punish him unfairly.” she reassures him. “What your parents did to you was not ok. You know that, don’t you?”
Buck shakes his head. “I wasn’t exactly the easiest kid to deal with.”
“No kid is.” Eddie retorts. He wants to take a plane to Hershey and have a talk with the Buckleys. “That doesn’t mean you put your hands on them or kick them out of your fucking house, Buck.”
Buck shakes his head again. “They didn’t actually kick me out, look, just forget I said anything.” He ignores the pain in his ankle and the chorus of people calling after him as he makes him way to the bunks, where he can rest in peace. They have no idea what they’re talking about.
His parents were good people. He was just a bad son.
That’s all there is to it.
---------------------------------------------------------
It’s quiet in the station when Bobby finds Buck in the kitchen, looking for leftovers. He’d fallen asleep and consequently missed dinner earlier.
“I saved you a plate, go sit, I’ll heat it up for you.” Bobby says.
“You don’t have to, I can---”
“I want to. Now go, let me do this for you.” Bobby leads an unsteady Buck to the stool and makes him sit and take pressure off of his swollen ankle.
Buck rests his elbows on the table and leans forward. “It wasn’t that bad.”
Bobby turns around, “I’m here if you ever want to talk. You know that, right?”
Buck huffs, frustrated. “You’re not listening. I don’t want to talk, I don’t need to talk, because it really wasn’t that bad. They were a little strict, it’s not a big deal.”
“Buck, if Harry got a bad grade at school, would it be ‘no big deal’ if I decided it was fine to let him sleep outside for the night, just to teach Harry a lesson? Would it be ok for me to hit him with my belt or make him go to bed hungry?”
“No, but that’s different, Harry’s not---” Buck stops, his fists clenched on the counter top. “He’s not a bad kid...” he finishes, in an almost whisper.
Bobby walks over and rests a hand on Buck’s shoulder. “Neither were you.”
“You don’t know that.” Buck argues, though the fight is gone.
“I do. Because I know the kind of man you are now, and that’s a good one. One I’m proud to have on my team.”
Buck bites his lip, looks up through suspiciously wet lashes at Bobby, unsure. “You are?”
“Buck, I know I don’t say it a lot, but you’re important to me and I love you.” he squeezes the shoulder under his palm. “And I’m here for you, son. We all need help sometimes, and according to what a very smart young man once told me, all you have to do is ask.”
Buck’s face crumbles and Bobby is there to wrap him in his arms before Buck can fully utter the word help.
He holds Buck tightly, one hand at the back of his head, pulling him in so that Buck’s cheek can rest on his shoulder. “You’re so good Buck. You deserve good things.”
Buck lets out a convulsive little gasp; he’s trying hard not to outright sob but Bobby’s not making this easy. He doesn’t want to risk waking everybody else up. Partly because he’s embarrassed, but mostly because he’d like just a few more minutes of this. Of being able to soak up the warmth of Bobby’s affection.
Eventually Buck forces himself to pull away, swiping at his eyes surreptitiously. “I’m ok.”
Bobby looks skeptical at best, but doesn’t say anything. Instead he takes the leftover food out from where it’s been warming in the oven and serves Buck a hearty plate. They sit together in companionable silence, Buck’s chewing the only sound. He only eats about half the plate, but it’s better than nothing, Bobby thinks, as he takes the rest and wraps it up to put it in the fridge.
“Thanks Cap.” Buck stands up, looking lost, torn between wanting to go back to bed and maybe hitting the gym. He doesn’t quite want to go to sleep just yet. But he knows if he makes too much noise this late at night he’ll risk waking up the rest of the 118.
Bobby sees right through him. “Come on, sit with me a while, I’m not tired yet.”
Buck limps over to the couch, huffing when he sits. “You don’t hafta stay up with me.”
Bobby turns on the TV, the volume low enough that they’d have to strain their ears to really hear anything. “How else am I supposed to figure out what types of forks I should be buying for the kitchen?” he nods at the infomercial playing.
Buck rolls his eyes, trying to hide his smile. “You can’t buy those. They’re so ugly.” he plays along.
“I don’t know,” Bobby counters. “The lime green really pops. Do you think Athena would let me get a set for the house?”
Buck laughs, softly. “I’d pay money to see you try.”
------------------------------------------------
Eddie wakes up before five in the morning and the first thing he does is check on Buck’s bunk, only for it to be empty.
He panics for a moment before realizing the Captain’s bed is empty too.
Eddie quietly makes his way to the lounge area. He finds Buck and Bobby on the couch, sound asleep. Buck’s head is on Bobby’s lap, and Bobby’s hand is resting right over his shoulder and forearm, fingers grazing Buck’s chest.
Eddie breathes out a sigh of relief.
Buck is going to be ok.
They’ll make sure of it.

Marry and be Merry ²

*Some n s f w implied
They talked about it more that night before going to get Chris in the morning.
They decided that they could work up to telling Christopher after a date or two. They already liked each other a lot and spent enough time together to know the other well enough so it wasn't that much of a change.
Eddie doubted Christopher would be against it but they would still ease into it. Buck was all for making sure he felt comfortable.
So that's how they ended up doing mini golf with Christopher.
"Dad."
"Yeah mijo."
"Since some kids can have two moms can others have two dads? No one I know at school has some like that." Christopher asked atop buck's shoulders looking at the view of the place in the setting sun.
"Of course they can. There are plenty of parents that are both boys or both girls or one might not be a boy or a girl or both could be that way too." Eddie looked up at his son thinking.
"Hmm. That's cool. Hey Buck, do you have both your parents?" Christopher asked while pointing in the direction of the next hole.
"Well. Kinda. My first dad passed away but then I got a new dad. And my mom left him later on so me and maddie have only got a mom now." Buck said being honest with his favorite boy.
"Do you miss your dad, the first one?"
"Yeah, a little. My second dad was cool but he wasn't really nice." Buck said.
"Why?" Chris and Eddie asked.
"I think he didn't want to be our dad but he liked our mom so he just put up with us for her."
"you like me right buck?" Christopher asked.
"I love you buddy. I love your dad a lot too." Buck answered.
"I love you buck. Can you put me down so I can try this one now?" Christopher asked.
Christopher tried his shot while buck hung back with Eddie.
"I think he senses something's up." Eddie's whispered.
"He's a smart kid. Maybe he's just putting things together." Buck said.
"Hey Chris. What would you say if I wanted to spend more time with buck as a special friend, like a boyfriend." Eddie asked while squatting down to look him in the eye.
"You can do that? So you like Bucky a lot?" Christopher asked.
"I really like your dad too. Is that okay, if I spend more time with you both, more than I already do?"
"But daddy won't get all of your time though right?" He asked.
Buck looked taken aback. "No. I'd still be having fun with you too, I promise." He assured Christopher.
"Then yeah Buck, be daddy's boyfriend." Chris smiled.
"I'd love to." Buck smiled and kissed Eddie right there earning an "ew, cooties," and a laugh.
-
Buck had been staying over more now than before. He was sleeping in Eddie's bed but they hadn't gotten past making out and jerking each other off. Eddie was more than attractive but buck felt a little hesitant.
It was newer to Eddie and a welcome change for buck. Before he'd just as soon ditch the person once things were over but he wanted to spend every waking moment with Eddie.
It felt like a breath of fresh air and he felt bad that he'd done that in the past but he wasn't that buck anymore.
He could see himself cuddling up to Eddie at night till they fell asleep. Them waking lazy in the morning and staying in bed till they had to make breakfast with Christopher or take him.
All of this was things he never thought he could have before but a part of him always wanted.
Buck had gotten his simple band fitted for Eddie's finger and was looking to propose any day now. It had been only about under two months of them actually dating but it felt like forever with them dancing around it all before.
Today when Eddie came home with Christopher from school buck would be on his knee at the door with the box in his hand.
He felt nervous but happy too as he got ready with it being around the time they get back usually.
Eddie opened the door with Christopher to see him and they both smiled.
"Eddie, I know this might be seen sudden but i feel like I've known you for so long that it's the right time. Will you marry me, and make me the happiest person in the world."
Christopher's grin couldn't be bigger as Eddie was silent.
"Dad, are you gonna say yes?" Christopher asked while pulling his hand.
"I- of course. Yes. Buck."
He was suddenly pulling buck up to hug him and hold his face as he kissed him.
"I'll marry you. If you'll marry me." Eddie pulled out a box from his pocket.
It was his own ring that he'd worn and gotten from his grandfather.
"Eddie."
"No. It's yours. And I'll take this one, i hope it didn't set you back by much."
"I uh. Actually it's my dad's. Maddie never got it because he died after she left." Buck scratched his head.
"I'll keep it safe then."
"I promise to do the same."
"So is buck my other dad now?" Christopher asked.
"Not yet mijo."
"Oh. I just realized. What are we gonna tell Maddie and the others?"
"Shit. I guess- maybe we could say we were dating for a bit and it just felt right. It's close enough to the truth. But we'll only tell those really close about everything though." Eddie suggested.
"She'd flip if I just came to her place and had a ring on." Buck laughed.
"Then we'll tell them, tomorrow. But for tonight, we're celebrating with ice cream." Eddie said getting a cheer from both his boys.
-
Their shift was just ending as Buck asked the others to hang back while Maddie came to meet them.
"What's up?" Chim asked.
"Not yet. I've gotta make sure maddie's here." Buck said.
"Is it about your leg? You told Eddie first?" Chim guessed.
"No. She's here. Wait a sec." Eddie said seeing her walk in.
Hen and Bobby looked at each other then between buck and Eddie.
"So, what's going on. Are you moving in with Eddie?" Maddie joked while sitting with chim.
"Well-" buck looked at Eddie while gesturing with his hands openly.
"I guess technically yeah. But-"
"Are y'all wearing rings?" Hen asked bringing everyone's eyes to their hands. They'd just slid them on like buck said to.
"Oh my God. You're engaged? To each other?" Maddie said getting up.
"Yeah." Buck smiled and laughed.
"You've been dating?" Bobby asked with a smile.
"Kinda. I mean now we can actually call it that. But we've been doing stuff like a couple for a while." Buck said.
"How long?" Hen asked.
"A little over a month and a half now." Eddie supplied.
"No. Chim." Hen said looked at him.
"Holy shit." He smirked.
"What?" Eddie asked.
"He guessed spring." Bobby said.
"You bet on us, getting together?" Buck asked.
"Buck we did the same with Bobby and Athena you're fair game." Hen said.
"Yeah but, still." Buck shrugged.
"Does Christopher know?" Maddie asked.
"He was there when i proposed." Buck nodded.
"I'm happy for you buck. But if I don't get to help with the theme and other parts I will never forgive you." She joked.
"Actually, I talked with Eddie. I want to just do it small and have a little ceremony of our closest family and friends. He agreed."
"Well I'm still helping, so it'll be great either way." Maddie smiled while going to hug Eddie.
"Thanks Maddie. I hope my sisters don't drive you crazy." Eddie said.
"Bobby. We uh, wanted you to officiate, if you're okay with that."
"Of course. I'd be honored. But, when is the wedding date?" Bobby asked.
Eddie looked at buck. "We hadn't actually picked. But i was thinking maybe in two months on the 20th."
"That day sounds familiar." Buck said.
"It should. It's the anniversary of Eddie's first day here." Bobby said with a smile.
"Umm. That's, that's a good day. Yeah, we're doing it then." Buck laughed while kissing Eddie.

safe, better keep that thought to yourself
9-1-1 Week, Day 4: “Do you believe me?” + love
To most people, Chimney often came off as confident and self assured. He’s worked hard to get to where he was now and if achieving what he has didn’t bring him confidence, what would?
But lying to a girlfriend about things he’s never done and about places he’s never been isn’t something a person who was confident and self assured would do. It’s surely not something he ever thought he would do, but without the wall of stories, who he really was was just boring.
He supposes it stems from his father’s unbearable expectations of him. He was supposed to be this great man in medicine with scholar friends and a beautiful wife ten years younger than him. He was supposed to be like this father.
When he doesn’t turn out to be what his father wants, it’s like, nothing he ever does is right. It didn’t matter that he was doing so well at being a paramedic and had a gorgeous girlfriend he wanted to propose to. He wasn’t following his plan for him so he’s not worthy of being his son after forty years. Albert was his new son.
So really, how can someone be self assured or confident in themselves when they’ve got an absent father whose expectations you never met.
The low self-esteem just gets worse after the rebar incident. It should have made him feel great, he survived something not many would with no TBI. But Tatiana left him and even though he wakes up with Bobby on his one side, Hen and Buck on his other, having someone love him enough to stick around would have been nice.
He feels stuck.
His life isn’t going anywhere different than it was and Tatiana was married and pregnant. By the looks of it, she was probably conceiving it when he had the rebar stuck in his head.
Life finally changes when he meets Maddie Kendall, Buck’s sister from his elusive past that he never told anyone about until she showed up. He thinks she’s beautiful, funny, and can’t quite see the resemblance between her brother and her. He also can’t believe she thinks that he’s funny. And cute.
The dancing around each other brings up past insecurities, yeah, but he knows she has Doug she needs to fully leave in the past before she can let herself fully commit. Their friendship is powerful, too, so really he doesn’t mind.
He just wishes he hadn’t been so stupid. He unknowingly brought Doug to Maddie and almost got himself taken out in the crossfire. He feels like he should have known if it was Doug, but he believed in Jason Bailey and had actually come to appreciate a friendship completely outside of the one-eighteen.
He tries not to blame himself but really, it was his fault Maddie was beaten and bruised while he’s in that hospital bed. They’re both okay and Maddie doesn’t hate him, but he does. Hates himself.
Things heal as time goes on, though, and they’re stronger than ever.
When he tells her he loves her, and even though she can’t say it back, he believes her that the feeling isn’t one sided. That the love between them was mutual, especially after the night they’d spent together.
And he knows he shouldn’t be bothered by the “I love you, Howie” from her used as a clue to say that things were going down at dispatch. He knows it shouldn’t bother him because it got everyone out, safe and sound, and she was so smart to do so. But days after, he still can’t stop hearing it in his head, over and over.
I love you, Howie. I love you, Howie. I love you, Howie. I love you, Howie.
Before he really started dating Maddie, he’d never realized just how alike Buck and him were. He hates admitting that they’re at all similar, but he loves Buck like a brother, loves his kindness and compassion. He’s sad that Buck and him are so alike in some senses, but once he gets Buck to open up, having someone that understands exactly how he’s feeling is refreshing.
“But does she really love me? She wasn’t just saying it to drop a hint?”
Buck rolls his eyes.  “Maddie is in love with you, I know she is, I’m her brother. It’s just always been hard to say it for her. Our parents weren’t a great example of love and she ended up in a similar situation with Doug where she used it as her only defense sometimes. When she said it, it was an admission as much as it was a clue, Chim. You’re great, why wouldn’t she?”
Chimney smiles. “Thanks, Buckaroo. But you’re sure?”
Buck groans. “Talk to her about it if you don’t believe me. Tell her how you’re feeling like you should have done in the first place.”
“I don’t want a lecture from the king of not talking about how you’re feeling even though you should.”
“Don’t know what you’re talking about, man.”
“Mhm.”
Chimney does end up talking to Maddie about it. He’s just not the one to bring it up.
“Buck told me something interesting last night…” She’s trying so hard to be casual about it that it’s cute enough to distract him momentarily from the conversation in the air.
“Damn it, Buck.”
Maddie giggles. “To be fair, he was drunk and seriously deflecting, so don’t get too mad at him.”
“Mhm. I’ll just have to get him back later.”
“I’d love to see it when you do. Howie, what I said,” she pauses. “I meant it completely. It wasn’t just a clue, okay? I said it because I meant it and if anything bad happened, I didn’t want to never be able to let you know.”
Chimney’s quiet, too quiet, as he tries to take in Maddie’s words and let them soak in.
“Do you believe me?”
Maddie reaches for his hand and Chimney starts smiling, a small, soft smile he had reserved for Maddie and Maddie only.
He brings their intertwined hands to his mouth and places a gentle kiss on top of Maddie’s hand. “Yeah. Yeah, I believe you. I love you, too.”
They both huff out a laugh through the tears in their eyes. They’re both tearing up, but for the first time in a long time, he feels happy and self assured.
