hello jamie! i stumbled upon your blog through the studyblr tag and started fangirling a little because a phd in anything medieval has been a dream of mine for awhile (and seeing that your research is in faerie lit is even cooler, i loved that subtopic in undergrad). i’d love to know more about your journey like how you chose your program or what were the best tactics you used to prepare—but ofc only if you’re comfortable sharing! thanks for reading all this and best wishes - 🥀 anon
Hello! It's lovely to hear from someone who's interested in pursing medieval studies!
(Caveat that my journey is just my own personal experience and that there are many ways to choose and prepare for an academic program) I actually prepared by taking some time away from academia first. I worked for two years as a paralegal while working on my applications for grad school, which helped me to (a) confirm that I wanted to go back to academia instead of entering the corporate world, (b) revise my BA thesis (which was frankly not well-written) into a reasonable writing sample for applications, and (c) digest some of the ideas I'd started thinking about in undergrad but had been way too stressed/sleep-deprived to really delve into. For me, those last two points were linked. One of the main reasons why my BA thesis was so rough was because I hadn't wanted to cut anything out, which meant that there were a lot of tangents that didn't really relate to my central argument. The positive side to this was that, after trimming things down for my writing sample, I was able to take one of those tangents and turn it into a question that I was interested in exploring further and that I could only find limited research on, and that became my statement of purpose.
During this entire process, I also stayed in contact with my undergrad advisor and another professor who knew my work very well. As I was revising and doing additional research for my applications, I made note of the professors who came up in my research regularly and which institutions they were at, and I'd bring the list to my advisor/the other professor, and we'd talk through what programs made sense. I also looked at medieval studies programs for their funding options, affiliations, libraries, and activities such as reading groups and course offerings, and I added or eliminated them from the list based off of that. If I happened to know anyone in those programs (or had a friend of a friend or anything like that), I also reached out to ask questions about what life as a grad student was like there--I honestly had a hard time finding information about, say, sexual harassment and racism, through other means, so talking with people who were current graduate students was extremely helpful. My current program was one that my professor suggested to me during this process, which I'm incredibly grateful for because, out of the programs I got into, it was also the one that offered me the best funding.
This is getting kind of long, but that's a bit of a run-down of my journey in broad strokes! I'd be happy to talk more if there's anything you'd like to hear more about, too!
#to be clear i had applied mostly for phd programs but got into MA programs with *kind of* the exception of the one im in#and i say kind of bc its not technically a continuous program but the expectation is that you continue on to a phd in this program#jam posts#🥀 anon

hey im kinda confused abt the hpsc and i feel like you could explain it pretty well. is the theory that they’re corrupt and the real villains based in canon or is it just fanon? bc from what i remember they were only mentioned pretty vaguely, so i feel like i might have missed a chapter or something...if it’s based in canon, could you tell me where? (if it’s not too much trouble ofc)
It’s not canon per se, but it’s a theory based on what we know about the HPSC thus far along with some other factors.
As for the HPSC, their job is basically to manage the interactions between heroes and society. In a way, they are the PR team for heroes as a whole. They are also responsible for coordinating the heroes teams with the police, high-profile cases, as well as the provisional hero license exams. We don’t know exactly how one obtains their license to be a Pro Hero but considering the HPSC hands out the provisional licenses, they most likely also take care of the real thing.
With that, they have a lot of control over everything, almost like someone playing chess, with the heroes, police, villains, and civilians being their pawns.
We got a better look at the HPSC once Hawks was introduced, specifically when we got the flashback of him being given his undercover job. There are two noteworthy points from that scene.
The first one being that the HPSC is okay with casualties, giving Hawks the permission to ignore the victims, while he befriends the villains. The HPSC places its importance on the greater good, rather than trying to save everyone.
The second part is about Hawks and his overall role for the HPSC. Though they call it a proposal, Hawks points out that he isn’t given a choice here.
Similar to Eri’s current appearance, people have different opinions on whether using children for the hero side is right or wrong, considering that Eri agreed to use her quirk on Mirio, and Hawks wanted to become a hero.
We don’t have the full picture of what this “special program” that Hawks was a part of entailed, and whether or not he was the only one in it. Although, concerning the last part, we don’t really see any heroes his age so it feels like Hawks was the only one part of this “program” and was always anticipated to be used as the HPSC’s secret weapon. Officially, he’s a hero, but in reality, the HPSC has a lot more control over him than any other hero. Part of that is also shown through his hero outfit, which features the HPSC logo on his shirt.
Keep in mind, Hawks was a kid when he got taken in by the commission. They saw a vulnerable child that happened to have a strong quirk that could be useful to them, so they took said child and turned it into the hero he is now for their own advantages.
Aside from Hawks and Eri, we also have U.A. and any other hero school. While this hasn’t really been addressed by society in the story aside from when Bakugou got kidnapped, this is a high school, which means the students are 15-18 years old. Although the story does tell us that hero students encountering actual villains is a new occurrence, they are still children who get put through very intense training. In the most recent arc, they are being put on the front lines, even though their role was just to evacuate the civilians, it’s obvious from their mindsets and their sense of duty that they are not going to leave it as just that. As mentioned at the start, the HPSC is responsible for coordinating these types of situations so it was their decision to put these kids there. Even if you don’t see an issue with hero high schools like U.A. existing, I think we can all agree that there is something very wrong about putting teenagers on the front lines against the biggest terrorist organization in the country. Funnily enough, the one person to address this is a villain, Dabi:
It makes sense for someone like Dabi, who was created and raised as a mere pawn himself instead of being allowed a normal childhood, to be able to point out that sending kids to a fight like this is not okay.
Speaking of villains, since the USJ arc, the League of Villains has been presented to us as the main antagonists of the series, specifically Shigaraki as the successor to All For One, since Deku, the protagonist, is the successor of One For All. But over time, the members of the League of Villains have been shown to us as being very layered, sympathetic people. Shigaraki has found his own reasons for doing what he does, but that doesn’t change the fact that he has always been and continues to be nothing but a vessel for All For One.
Despite the fact that All For One in his current state technically can’t do much, especially not without Shigaraki, him still being around and still saying that Shigaraki isn’t complete yet shows us that All For One is still the bigger threat and we haven’t seen the last of him. When it comes to the question of how can Shigaraki redeem himself, he would first need to realize that he is just being used by All For One. Because the main difference between him and Dabi is that the latter has recognized that he was only used and is now fighting back, whereas Shigaraki hasn’t become aware of that yet. To redeem himself, he not only has to realize this but also figure out how to break away from All For One. Unlike Dabi, he can’t just leave, since All For One can possess him from the comfort of his highly secured cell.
Speaking of Dabi, some people are also theorizing that the HPSC knew about Touya and helped cover up his death, but that this is unconfirmed so while I’m not ruling it out (according to Endeavor he did search for Touya instead of immediately accepting his death so they most likely do know about it but whether they knew the circumstances that have led to this is unknown), I wouldn’t count it as evidence for the time being.
Circling back to the students of U.A., after the USJ arc the rumors of a possible traitor came up, and after Bakugou got kidnapped, we got this meeting between the HPSC and the police, where they first mention that they will need to make some changes.
Later on, Principal Nezu tells us that, though officially the dorm system is for the students’ safety, it’s also so that they (the HPSC and police) can investigate in secret, with both the teachers and the students being possible suspects.
The story hasn’t exactly mentioned this since or explained how exactly they investigate in secret. We do know that there are robots with motion detectors/cameras on campus that report any kind of movement to the teachers, like when Bakugou and Deku had their fight outside. But what about in the dorms? Are there hidden cameras? Maybe even in the rooms? We don’t know that yet, part it’s still a fact that the HPSC even suspects the kids and puts them in dorms under false pretense when in reality it’s easier for surveillance/control reasons.
So to sum it up, the HPSC has a lot of control and they make sure to keep it that way and get even more control. Of course, considering that it is their job to keep the country safe, it is more or less expected of them. But they more often than not show that they have no issue with using child soldiers, and they are also okay with casualties. Overall, they are a corrupt organization in many ways. With the current arc, especially Dabi calling out Endeavor and thus possibly (hopefully) making society question heroes a little more, it would then also make sense for the HPSC to be questioned, though probably at a later point in the story and not quite yet. However, in order for that to happen, people on the hero side first have to start recognizing these flaws and start questioning the current system that is in place.
#also thank you for thinking i can explain this well?!#hope this helped!!#bnha#ask#also reminds me of psycho pass#meta#i think before the story focuses on that it's going to focus on criticizing the heroes first though#and then eventually realizing how the hpsc plays into that#me-meta#Anonymous

Zukka Goes to a Ball
Hi, this was supposed to be a fluffy oneshot, but then i wrote out the bullet points, and if I write it later I will add a link to it here but for now it’s gonna be a bullet point fic lads, enjoy
(also I wrote this at like 2 am so I’m sorry for the inevitable spelling mistakes and slight rambling)
~~
AU where Iroh took the throne after Lu Ten died, Ozai was cast out for disrespecting Azulon, Zuko and Azula and Ursa had the option to stay and so they did and Zuko and Azula (especially) are better for it, and so Iroh did all the good shit, opening up trade routes and rebuilding the nations and removing the laws that outlawed homosexuality
Aang is still found when Katara and Sokka are out fishing, but the village is being rebuilt, the men are home, and with the Northern Water Tribe’s help, the two tribes have pooled their resources and customs together to preserve the customs they have/had, but also listened to people like Yue, Sokka, and Katara to see what should be done/changed to help make the future better
The customs mean that Sokka and Katara now have the labels of Prince and Princess of the Southern Water Tribe, just like Yue
But the customs of arranged marriage and waterbending teachings are looser, so Katara is taught by Pakku, who marries their grandmother and they grow up with him as a grandfather
Kya is still dead, the last raid happened right before Iroh took the throne
Aang and Katara spent some time together, fell in love, have been together ever since
Yue and Sokka were engaged (and in love), until the moon thing happened; it happened bc Zhao was a follower of Ozai, and Ozai has gained a group of supporters who prefer Sozin’s, Azulon’s, and Ozai’s ways to that of Iroh’s - and Zhao snuck into the Northern Water Tribe and killed the fish, and Yue gave her life to save it
Sokka is devastated, and the Water Tribes are ready for war, but still hope for peace after so much devastation
Iroh, Hakoda, and Arnook meet to try and solve these things without war, and Iroh explains what happened in the past with Azulon and Ozai, and why the Northern Water Tribe was attacked
The three leaders decide that an all nations ball should be held, and that a union between the Fire Nation and the Water Tribes would be the best way to smooth things over, and to show solidarity
So its decided that either Katara or Sokka must marry Zuko or Azula
Katara is in love with Aang, and so Sokka knows he must be the one to marry into the Fire Nation Royal Family
He talks about this to katara, who thanks him like hell for not separating her and Aang (not that she expected him to, but it’s a relief)
Aang finds out and thanks him too, and tells him that as the Avatar and as the only representative for the Air Nation, hes been invited and that bc sokka is his family too he will smite Azula or Zuko if they hurt him
He knows Aang wouldn't hurt a fly (seriously, how is he a vegetarian in the freaking South Pole), but he appreciates that Aang and Katara will be there to watch his back
he’s not too upset about being the one to marry bc he knows his sister will be happy, but honestly hates that this is happening at all bc Yue is dead
katara and aang distract him from these thoughts by asking him wether he think’s he’ll be drawn to the prince or the princess (bc sokka is bi and both have known that for ages)
he’s not sure, say’s he’ll see
In the fire nation, Iroh talks to Ursa, and they both talk to Zuko and Azula
They dont know about Aang and Katara, so Zuko and Azula talk about both Katara and Sokka
Azula is still a bit manipulative, but is working on it, and Zuko trusts her enough to tell her that he hopes that he doesn’t have to marry the Southern Princess
Azula asks why, and Zuko admits he likes boys
Azula is silent for a bit, and then says that she hopes she wont have to marry either one of them because she, Ty Lee, and Mai are dating
Zuko swears that she won’t have to stop dating them, that he will be the one to marry
azula and ty lee and mai are v grateful and vow to back him up and kick water tribe ass if whichever one he marries hurts him
in other news, Suki is at the ball as Earth King Kuei’s plus one/bodyguard, and she and azula hit it off so Suki ends up eventually dating Mai and ty Lee and azula as well
back to our regularly scheduled program
Before the ball, Sokka is getting ready with Chief Arnook (Hakoda is getting ready with Bato bc they dating bc I said so)
Sokka says “i loved her, you know. And I will do this for our tribes, and even if I do learn to love whichever of them I’m to marry, I’m not sure I can ever stop loving her, and I want you to know that I did.”
And hes awkward about it, but Arnook hugs him, and says “She loved you so much, Sokka. And she would want you to be happy, as I’m sure you know.” Then he pulls back.
“I know we are technically two separate tribes, but I want you to know, I still consider you a son.” Sokka cries a little, and nods, happy that he has the blessing of the man who was supposed to be his father in law. Sokkas just happy that he can still have that, and smiles at Yue as she rises to look over the ball
Shes smiling cause she knows whats about to happen, and does indeed wish sokka to be happy as he can and will be
Hakoda and Bato come to wish Sokka good luck, bc Sokka and Katara and Aang already talked to them about how Katara and Aang intend to stay together,
Hakoda mentions how proud he is and sokka has to wipe a few tears from his eyes
Iroh and Ursa know the same thing about Zuko and Azula and Mai and Ty Lee, and both wish Zuko luck as well
Iroh makes sure to say how proud he is, and that Zuko is an honorable man
zuko def isnt crying, nope, but he wipes his tears away and carries on
So Azula and Katara are both planning on pushing Zuko and Sokka towards each other, but honestly there doesnt need to be any pushing
The ball attendees, excluding the royals of each Nation (and the Avatar), get to the ballroom, and the doors open for the royals (who are all announced by name), and of course everyone knows what the ball is for (security is quadrupled, from all the nations)
First comes Fire Lord Iroh, followed by Lady Ursa
Next comes in King Kuei
Next is Chief Arnook
Then Hakoda and Bato
Then Zuko and Azula
Then Aang
And lastly, Sokka and Katara
Zuko and Azula are standing by Iroh’s throne, and as the water tribe royals walk in, Sokka and Zuko make eye contact
And both are so smitten with each other
And at some point, it is asked that at least one of the young fire nation and water tribe royals dance together
And Zuko and Sokka look at each other and grasp each others hands and dance
its a slow waltz
And they just look so right together, the two princes
And they go out on the balcony and talk
Zuko says he wants to get to know sokka better, and sokka agrees
But is hesitant still, and asks zuko if he knows why the ball was happening
Zuko kinda shrugs, and says “there was an attack on the NWT, by firebenders loyal to my father, whos a huge asshole and im glad hes not on the throne. Uncle wanted to prove that hes not his brother, which leads to me having to marry, well, you.”
Sokka nods. “So they didn't tell you.”
“Tell me what?” Zuko asked, confused
“The attack on the NWT. The mission was to kill the moon spirit.” Zuko gasped, quickly checking that the full moon was in the sky, which it was. He knew what it meant, what would have happened to the waterbenders.
“They didn’t succeed, though, clearly.” He says, trying for comforting. Sokka laughed, harshly, without humor.
“They did, actually. Zhao - former Commander, now Admiral of Ozai’s followers - he killed it. My fiance, Princess Yue of the Northern Water Tribe, had a little bit of life from the moon spirit in her. To save us all, she decided to, according to her father, give it back.”
Sokka looks over to Zuko, who’s horrified
“So they’re expecting you to marry me? That’s kinda fucked up, especially if you loved her as much as it sounds like you do.”
Sokka nods. “Look, Zuko, I like you. I can tell already, I do. But,” and here he looks up at the moon, at Yue, “I will never stop loving her.” Looks back to Zuko “She will always have a part of me, and I need you to understand that if we’re supposed to marry each other.”
Zuko nods, understanding entirely. “It wasnt fair, and I would never ask you to stop loving her. I also can tell that I like you too, Sokka, and I’m willing to follow your lead on this. You clearly did love her, and I completely understand that you will continue to. I’m not…” Zuko takes a deep breath.
“I’m not going to ask you to betray your customs, your family, or any past love. I don’t want you to stop loving her, especially not when you clearly love her so much. And I’m willing to wait as long as you need and/or want to.”
Zuko’s nearly out of breath and hes being so honest it hurts, and Sokka’s crying a little so Zuko freaks out and thinks he said the wrong thing but Sokka is quick to reassure him that he said and did everything right
And they go back inside, together, and everyone looks at them, clearly expecting some kind of announcement here
And Sokka steps up, no longer teary eyed (mostly) and says: “I, Prince Sokka of the Southern Water Tribe, with blessings from both Water Tribes, ask for permission from the Fire Lord to court Prince Zuko of the Fire Nation.”
Hakoda, Bato, Arnook, Ursa, and Iroh are all by Iroh’s throne, and all of them step up. The guests had already parted the way. Katara and Azula are standing slightly to the side, but still nearby.
“I, Fire Lord Iroh, give permission to Prince Sokka of the Southern Water Tribe to court Prince Zuko of the Fire Nation, but only if Prince Zuko agrees to it.”
Both sokka and Zuko sigh in relief, smile, and nod at each other in agreement. Its Zuko’s turn to step up.
“I, Prince Zuko of the Fire Nation, agree to be courted by Prince Sokka of the Southern Water Tribe, with blessings from Fire Lord Iroh. I ask for permission from the Chiefs of both the Northern and Southern Water Tribes to court Prince Sokka.”
Hakoda and Arnook step up. Arnook speaks first. “I give my permission for Prince Sokka to be courted by Prince Zuko.” Hakoda is next. “I also give my permission for Prince Sokka to be courted by Prince Zuko, as long as Prince Sokka agrees to it.”
Sokka smiles at Zuko, and they hold hands to show solidarity between nations. And maybe bc they wanted to
Their sisters and (partners of said sisters) come up to them, smiling
Katara and Aang hug sokka, saying theyre proud of him, but also still thanking him
Azula punches sokka and says to be good to her big brother or else
Sokka says yes ma’am
Katara threatens Zuko, who also responds with a yes ma’am
Azula and Katara shake hands, which scares the ever living fuck out of everyone except Toph who laughs
Shes here bc shes a fuckin beifong
Aang trained with Pakku already (and katara of course) but has been looking for an earthbending teacher, and so convinces Toph to teach him bc bumi gave him the same advice here as in the show
Her parents aren’t entirely convinced, but Iroh offers to have the Beifongs stay (for business reasons, of course, winking at Aang and Toph), and that Toph will be safe here and can make new friends and future alliances between nations, which convinces them enough to agree to stay for a while
Sokka and Katara had to stay anyway of course, and Aang stays with Katara (and hey, wouldnt it be good if he could learn earth and firebending while at the palace), but everyone else went home
Shenanigans ensue
Zuko and sokka get closer as friends
And still really, really, really like each other
And of course theyre courting each other but soon they start like, dating dating
And fall in love
And live happily
Maybe Ozai tries to ruin their happiness but Toph punches him in his stupid face so its all good

Introducing The Front ’s New Romance Advice Columnist: Miss Soju!
We all have an ideal: an ideal type, an ideal first date, an ideal relationship. The problem is love isn’t ideal at all. And sooner or later, we find ourselves sitting on that plastic chair in that tent on the side of the road with an ache in our chest. You’re hurt, confused, and kind of going crazy-- all the tell-tale symptoms of heartbreak are there. And the only cure? Soju, of course!
Finding a decent partner and maintaining a healthy, sustainable relationship is difficult enough as it is. Then layer it with the culture shock of university, where you’re experiencing actual adulthood for the first time without mommy and daddy to hold your hand. It’s enough to make anyone lose their minds! Sure, you could always turn to your friends for support and advice, but in all honesty, they’re even more of a mess than you are.
That’s why Mansae University’s affiliate newspaper, The Front, will be reviving our romance advice column this fall! Each week, Miss Soju will be answering all your burning questions, and that means all of them. Her expertise touches on topics as simple as explaining to that one guy that your love is fated because you passed each other at Yuhaeng Quad, like three times, and extends to more extreme situations that require an anonymous veil, like how to confess to your new boyfriend with the furry fetish that you’ve been severely allergic to animals since you were three and you have no idea how any animals act, let alone… Yikes.
It’s true, college is full of new and bizarre experiences, some we must go through and some we’d much rather avoid. Who knows? Maybe you’ll meet the love of your life here. But it’s okay to admit that you need a little guidance through the mystical and confusing world of college dating. Miss Soju has got your back, and she’s not afraid to hit you with that real shit. As she always says, good advice is like taking a shot: sweet on the lips but burns your throat as you swallow it down.

“Jihoon, I don’t know if I can do this.”
Name: So Joohyun. Major: Journalism major with a minor in communications. Estimated graduation year: 2021. Desired position: World News Journalism Intern. That was what she had put on her application for The Front’s junior internship program. She had made sure to attach her published articles and to emphasize her interest in-- no, her passion for-- reporting compelling stories on an international scale. Not once in her application did she indicate that she was an expert in love or sex, let alone qualified to give others advice on the subjects! In fact, she was probably the least qualified person on campus for this position, which was probably the most perplexing aspect of the whole situation.
But despite all of that, there she was, sitting in Yuhaeng Quad with her best friend, reading the promo piece she had written for Miss Soju. Jihoon had been ecstatic when he had thought of the nickname back in high school. She had snuck bottles of the alcohol over to his house one night after finals week, and he had drunkenly claimed that the name was doubly clever since So-ju were also the first two syllables in her name. When the newspaper had told her she needed an anonymous pen name, it was the only thing she could think of, mostly because creating a secret identity had made her in desperate need of a drink. She changed her mind. Having a secret identity was equally as perplexing as pretending to know how to spice up people’s sex lives. It was like she was some kind of Love Spiderman. She was not ready for that kind of great power or the great responsibility that came with it!
“‘I don’t know if I can do this’?” Jihoon repeated her words slowly. “I don’t think I’ve ever heard you say those words in that order. Can I take your picture? I need to commemorate this moment.”
“Can’t you see that I am having a crisis?” she whined. “The integrity of my career is on the line because I’ve never bothered to go on a date!”
“When are you not having a crisis?” Jihoon laughed. He sat up from lying down on their picnic tarp to give her full view of his smug grin. Originally, he had dragged Joohyun outside in hopes that the perfect summer weather would help relieve some of her stress from the past week. He even found her favorite spot under the shade of an ancient tree that overlooked the stretch of green field. But Jihoon could not call himself a proper best friend if he passed on an opportunity to rub all of this in her face. “This is what you get for chickening out on all our group blind dates! I could have scored that hot bassist girl with the thigh tattoo, but nooo, you always had to put your career first.”
“Sue me for having priorities!” she huffed. Leave it to Jihoon to chalk this all up to karma. Now that he mentioned it though, she couldn’t help but feel like a higher power was taking a piss on her life. Or maybe it was just the shit-eating smile on Jihoon’s face that had her on edge. Joohyun tried to avert her focus to a couple of boys tossing a frisbee around instead, but somehow that irked her too. The idyllic weather, the carefree students, everything that was pleasant seemed to mock her sour mood. She pouted at the ground in defeat, and continued, “You are the first person to know that if I was told that dating and fucking around were going to be crucial to my journey to becoming South Korea’s top journalist by the time I turn 25, I would have become a hoe long ago.”
“Woah, are you gonna start your thot phase for this? Are we gonna have a hot girl summer?” The boy began to bounce excitedly. Joohyun felt it was high time to give him the finger, but she also felt a small smile tugging at her frown. “Easier said than done, though. Remember Jessi from high school?”
“Yeah I remember,” she said with a sigh. High school romance had lured so many of her friends into its clutches, with its enticing promises of sweet chocolates and stuffed animals, and she had helplessly watched from the top of the class as they forsook their grades for boys who didn’t even know what deodorant was. She only shuddered to think of the state of their grades after a nasty break up. It was then that Joohyun had decided that her future was not worth risking over a boy’s attention. “Which is exactly why I never got involved in all that mess in the first place.”
“This must be the gods telling you that it’s time to.”
“What kind of fucked up god sets up a virgin as a love advice columnist?” she asked the sky loudly. If she had known there was anyone listening, she would have insisted that her question was rhetorical and was not in need of any type of response! However, the gods cared not for grammar technicalities on the mortal plane. They just couldn’t resist the chance to respond to someone so openly questioning their decisions with some good ol’ spite. Honestly, with the way things were going for her lately, Joohyun probably should have expected the frisbee flying merrily towards her face, even if she hadn’t just challenge the universe.
“Oh fuck!” Joohyun jerked out of the way and felt the frisbee thunk against her shoulder instead. “Ow.” At this point, she didn’t even have the capacity to be annoyed; she just braced herself for whatever misfortune life threw at her next.
“Sorry about that!” A boy called out, jogging up to them. As he came into clearer view, she noted that he looked far from misfortunate, and also had to remind herself that staring was rude even if someone was unnaturally handsome. His features were soft yet striking, like he had been carefully sculpted from cotton candy. Or maybe a fluffy rain cloud? Joohyun shook her head a little as if that would get her to stop staring so shamelessly. She speculated whether it was the sun that made it look like his blond hair was a glowing halo. Okay seriously, stop staring! He gave Joohyun a sweet smile when he reached them. “My friend got a bit distracted. Now that I’m here, I can’t say that I blame him. Hope we didn’t do too much damage!”
“Uh,” was her captivating reply.
Jihoon, never one to miss such a ripe opportunity, piped up beside her. “She’ll be fine. This is Joohyun, by the way.”
His smile widened at Woozi’s introduction, and Joohyun could swear there was an actual twinkle in his eyes. “Nice to meet you both. I’m--”
“Yoon Jeonghan!” They all looked towards the call. The ethereal boy let out a startlingly loud cackle at the sight of his friend, who gave the two strangers a sheepish wave before continuing to gesture for Jeonghan to return. Joohyun must have been put in a staring mood, because she didn’t miss how his friend’s big ears were a shade of pink and how they bloomed into a cherry red when they briefly made eye contact. She caught herself wondering if all the boys at Mansae University were always this cute.
“I guess I better go,” the boy named Jeonghan shrugged. Joohyun felt his fingers brush against hers when he took the frisbee from her hand, his eyes glinting mischievously. Now she was sure she was seeing things. “See you two around!”
They both watched him retreat in an awestruck silence. That was certainly… unanticipated. Even long after Jeonghan and his friend were out of sight, the brief encounter left a blanket of fogginess lingering over them. Had she not felt his fingers on hers, Joohyun would have easily believed that it had all been in her head. At the same time, she was pretty sure that she wasn’t bold enough to conjure up someone that looked like that on her own. As she continued to fathom how a human being could glow, Joohyun felt the fog dissipate into the warm summer air. She felt like she was waking up from a disorienting dream, and she blinked to hasten the process. To her growing bewilderment, she found that her heartbeat was steady as she came back to her senses, her mind seemingly devoid of the panic and doubt that had plagued her all week. It was a gasp of fresh air.
Jihoon, on the other hand, had long broken free from the strong impression that the blond boy made. He noted the dazed look on his best friend’s face and rolled his eyes. Who knew that a pretty boy was all it took to make her shut up a bit? He nudged Joohyun impatiently, so that she could pay attention to him while he roasted her for totally flubbing her chances. “You thinking of risking it all for that guy?”
In an instant, Joohyun slammed herself back into reality just to shove Jihoon away from her. “That is so not happening,” she said a little too indignantly. Before Jihoon could reassure her that the guy seemed interested enough even though she had only said a single syllable to him, Joohyun suddenly turned to him very seriously. “Do you really think I can do it, Jihoon?”
“What, bang that guy? I can try calling him back here if you want,” he snickered.
“You know what I mean!”
“Okay sorry, I couldn’t resist,” Jihoon replied, his grin now melting into a familiar smile, the one that could put her at ease on her lowest days. “I just don’t know why you have to ask. You and I both know that you kick ass at writing. You’ve written about stuff like natural disasters and the student protests, no problem at all. It’s not like you have a PhD in environmental science or politics. How is this any different? ”
Joohyun scrunched her face as if Jihoon had just suggested that chocolate milk came from brown cows. “Dude, they’re completely different. Those articles were reporting on facts. I did research, I conducted interviews!”
“That’s what I’m saying, Joo!” Jihoon exclaimed suddenly. As smart as she was, he couldn’t help getting a little giddy whenever he thought of a good idea before her. “Why not treat Miss Soju like any other of your other projects? I mean, love is probably one of the most well-documented experiences throughout history, and people are still going through all the same shit. There’s probably thousands of resources for a man simping on a hot chick alone. You can even take your pick, like movies, songs, books, weird couples on Youtube? You don’t need to have experience, because you can just do the research! ”
“Research?” Joohyun repeated. If there was one thing that she was good at, it was doing the work. From the moment she had decided to become a journalist, everything she had done was a strategic move to get her closer to her end goal. She had spent sleepless nights perfecting the details of her writing, countless hours reading through endless archives of old articles. Hell, she even restricted herself from dating for years just so she could focus on keep her grades up. It was almost too easy of a solution. Maybe she was meant to do this after all.
Another couple of months of research would simply be another hurdle on her way to the finish line and she was getting closer and closer. Finally, she felt a smile spread across her cheeks, a real, genuine smile. “I… I can do that.”
“Now that,” Jihoon said as he took her hand in his, pulling her up to her feet, “sounds like So Joohyun. Or should I say Miss Soju?”
She laughed as she dusted the grass off of her butt. “You know, it’s probably not a good idea to include the first part of my name in my anonymous persona. It makes it so obvious that it’s me.”
“Yeah, I mean it would be obvious if people actually knew who you were in the first place,” Jihoon scoffed, narrowly dodging a kick from her. “That’s a good thing for you! Anyway, let’s get out of here, I have a couple of tweaks to make to my song before releasing it tonight. Could you listen to it by the way? I need to know if it’s too cheesy.”
“Oh, the song you’re writing about your mystery muse?” Joohyun hummed playfully while packing up their blanket. She followed after her best friend as he began the short climb uphill. “I don’t know if I want to, you’ve been pretty out of pocket today.”
“Hey!” he said defensively. “First: I don’t need a muse for my songs, I just have a very vivid imagination and my talent does the rest. Second: I literally just stopped you from giving up on your lifelong dream of becoming a journalist, so I think you owe me one. You’re just jealous I can write love songs without having an existential crisis.”
“See, that is what I mean by out of pocket,” she paused for a beat. “I may be willing to listen to your song. For a small price, of course.”
“Okay, deal,” he agreed without hesitation, missing the way Joohyun deviously smirked beside him. They reached the concrete pavement at top of the hill and headed in the direction of his nearby apartment. “What is it this time, Ms. So?”
“Well Mr. Lee, thanks to your lovely suggestion earlier, I have been inspired to begin work immediately. So we shall be watching Twilight on movie night,” she said all too gleefully, mostly for satisfaction that Jihoon’s twisted face of disgust gave her.
“Do we have to?” he groaned.
“It’s for my research!”

Autonomous Cars: When Are We Just Passengers?
For years, we’ve been talking about unbiased self-propelled automobiles. We can't see them on the streets. However just be affected person, one thing occurs.
We are – to put it mildly – in a small section of visitors. And we do not mean that there isn’t a jute within the evening, however future mobility: automotive sharing, electric automobiles and unbiased driving are presently the most important development sites for the automotive and transport industries. All of it is best to assist to make visitors as protected, environmentally friendly and congestion free.
For automotive sharing, which works fairly properly. The number of German clients has elevated to 2.46 million over the previous yr, a press release by the federal federation Carsharing (bcs), which is nearly 17 %. And electrical automobiles are additionally progressively talking on German roads. In accordance with Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt, each electric and hybrid automobiles have been vital by the beginning of the yr.
Dream of Uncontrolled Driving
What sounds just like the music of the longer term: Autonomous, self-driving automobiles – alone – by yourself, if crucial. Nevertheless, this isn’t a technical improvement that occurs at night time.
Furthermore, if not day-after-day, more improvement is introduced, autonomous driving continues to be at the prime of the automotive agenda. This just lately demonstrated the merger of VW and Ford, together with a three way partnership between Daimler and BMW, which have chosen to start out the development of computer-assisted automobiles in 2019.
However it's not just automotive producers, even search engine corporations like Google, mobile phone corporations, and numerous start-up machines with autonomous automobiles. For instance, the Swedish launch of Einride this yr sent the primary absolutely autonomous electronic truck.
The T-Pod electrical automotive passing the 2 warehouses of the Jönköping freighter DB Schenker delivers the products. Without the driving force and the identical with out the top of the home. In March 2019, the Swedish Transport Authority has acquired approval for the automotive load. It was then thought-about that T-Pod was capable of drive in accordance with Swedish visitors laws. After that, an autonomous truck has a public street in the industrial space.
Autonomous automobiles are usually not allowed on the street until there’s particular permission, as on this check subject in Karlsruhe, Germany
Nevertheless, when T-Pod does its job right now, the autonomous truck continues to be a pilot venture. His strategy to authorization is restricted till the top of 2020.
Unbiased driving: Where are we at the moment?
Technologically, the business has arrived in Autonomous Check Automobiles on its means worldwide.
Since 2017, Brief HAF or "Driven Driving is Allowed in Germany" is a "highly automated drive", "
This step corresponds to the third degree in the direction of a totally automated automotive. Automotive and Automotive Engineers Affiliation (brief: SAE, German "Automotive Engineers Association") has agreed to develop autonomous driving in a five-tier system (see information graphics).
Every degree and each degree represents a special degree of automation, the extent to which the car can carry the driving force's duties
The third stage signifies that the automotive is nearly complete, the duty remains with the driving force. In different words, he should be capable of intervene in any state of affairs. But: as soon as the driving force places his automotive in a really automated area, he can flip his consideration to the street.
The car is enough to cope with intelligent on a regular basis conditions alone – Control, braking and alarms in essential conditions are included. Nevertheless, the system is designed to permit the driving force to bypass the system at any time. Degree 3 is particularly designed to be used on motorways.
Automation: Degree 3 Rollers
Automobiles with this degree of automation, nevertheless, don’t seem on the roads. Theoretically, the visitors congestion assistant will meet at Audi A8 by 2018, as the requirements, because it screens the visitors jam on the motorway with out driver assistance to 60 km / h, nevertheless, this perform is
The introduction of the Visitors Congestion Pilot requires "clarity and legal frameworks for each country" Along with customizing and testing the system, "Audi says. As well as, there are totally different recruitment procedures around the globe and concentrate on deadlines. Subsequently, visitors congestion is controlled step by step relying on the authorized state of affairs of the nation concerned within the collection.
And the remaining? Mercedes-Benz plans to launch degree three efficiency next yr. BMW needs to catch up to 2021, Ford and Volvo then need to show even degree 4 independence.
The Largest Challenges
But once we journey, now unbiased? The complexity of this challenge is usually seen in a really brief time, writes Prognos Analysis into "introducing automation in the car fleet: impact on warehouses and security". Critical statements are solely potential in response to quite a few common assumptions.
Researchers have investigated unbiased four major limitations. It have to be recognized: authorized points, technological maturity, the second of inertia of the fleet and the enlargement of the infrastructure
This can be a entire vary of factors, comparable to present national and worldwide rights, know-how renewal durations, info networks, management and, particularly, ethical issues. Particularly, there’s in all probability no proper reply ever. In 2018, researchers on the Massachusetts Institute of Know-how (mit) made their first entrepreneurial and ethical machine for dialogue.
SEN-themed online recreation within the face of varied visitors conditions the place you must determine
Questions, questions
Scientists encounter subjects on-line in several conditions. That they had to decide on an inexpensive unintentional damage in their eyes: over the pensioner, crosses on the pink street, or do I’m going towards a concrete wall that compromises my automotive's residents, together with youngsters?
A lot of the respondents want to save youngsters than the aged. And most of it – by selection – more animals move via as humans.
With the assistance of the knowledge, UN scientists are trying to find out what automotive ethics could possibly be programmed for automobiles in the future. But to date there isn’t a answer, only an ethical dilemma
Forecast: half full or half empty
Nevertheless, Prognos researchers have a outcome, albeit very obscure. An Autonomous District research concludes that automated driving is just sluggish, perhaps as a surprise to anybody.
”In 2050, about half of the automobiles have automation. Usually, this is solely obtainable on highways, ”she says. Although it might have been potential to automate 40% of the automotive's driving characteristics, it may also be finished on roads, however less than four%.
Prognos gives two estimates: one pessimistic, one optimistic. In the most effective case, growing the proportion of latest automobiles, the place the driving force of all motorways is completely driving, can forestall from 2020 to 70% in 2050.
A automotive with urban pilots – that is, the power to drive both highway and metropolis alone – can be seen regularly on the streets. After 2040, extra automobiles shall be provided which can turn into utterly unbiased from door to door, together with the street, not the driving force's want.
"A significant number of vehicles that can travel across the automated network are expected only after 2050," researchers predict.
So, as I stated: endurance, it's happening.
The automotive thinks the automobiles are driving
Journey from Silicon Valley to Las Vegas
This Audi A7 is filled with sensors. Firstly of 2015, the automotive drove from Silicon Valley alone to Lag Vegas Know-how Truthful CES. 900 miles lengthy, street trip on the freeway. The taxpayer was only in an emergency – he didn't have to intervene, he was on this journey.
Automotive thinks that automotive drivers
Really cozy!
This prototype of Mercedes-Benz, named F015, and displayed in all Konequenzen, like an autonomous automotive, might appear to be: The driving force's seat is pointless. As an alternative, take a look at all the passengers during driving and entertaining. This research car was developed in Silicon Valley. It presently has a most velocity of 200 km / h.
The automotive thinks the drivers of the automotive
Nothing for impatient varieties
In truth, autonomous automobiles are very protected. They are programmed to decelerate in unclear instances, but to travel. You need to comply with a predetermined security distance and jeopardize other street customers, not because of aggressive drivers similar to this race.
Automotive thinks that automotive drivers
Snug all the time operating out
These two autonomous automobiles, that are situated on the University of Munich's Federal Armed Forces, are very relaxed, driving in front of the automotive, one all the time following faithfully. You can too discover your approach on tough terrain, the paths you had never recognized before. Apply exhibits in ELROB Robotic Competitors 2012.
Automotive thinks automotive drivers
This might not have been needed
For such a mass of billiards, if individuals drive too quick, poor visibility and a enough security distance. Correctly built robotic automobiles would not make such mistakes. Lots of them have been networked, you possibly can even send one kilometer prematurely to the next automobiles: cautious visitors jam!
Automotive thinks that automotive makers
Sensors for All Kinds of Hazards
Robotic automobiles that can use totally different eyes to determine their surroundings. For instance, an autonomous automotive designed by Google makes use of such a laser sensor. Spin and its setting are scanned with laser beam in three dimensions.
Automotive thinks that automotive drivers
The actual world of the laser view
And so it seems like: The Bundeswehr University wagons run by way of a rough terrain. Laser creates a three-dimensional map that he enters into the pc. You’ll be able to even take an outdoor and a automotive from the viewpoint that you simply see.
Automotive thinks automotive drivers
The development with the satellite tv for pc, the radar, and the eye
The robot can target many different players within the subject. For example, an optical eye as a normal USB digital camera or a small radar sensor. It’s also necessary to determine the situation of automobiles by way of satellite tv for pc – from GPS knowledge
Auto thinks that automotive workouts
Seeing Automobiles – Future Know-how from Germany
With optical cameras, researchers work at Daimler. For the purpose of inventing automobiles, was appointed in 2011 for the longer term German prize. This digital camera is mounted behind the windscreen of a mid-range automotive. Concentrate to what’s occurring on the street.
Automotive thinks about automotive drivers
From shifting pixels
The optical digital camera first detects hundreds of pixels referred to as a dot cloud. Within the movement of individual pixels, we calculated the vectors so that the arrows in the motion. Totally different vectors are of different lengths. This leads to the car's pc before planning the visitors image and the complicated movement next to the automotive.
Automotive thinks that automotive drivers
Sluggish or Dodge?
On the pc's pc, vectors filter out the velocity of the automotive whereas the automobiles are unusual, he can detect a harmful state of affairs: the pedestrian runs from the appropriate aspect of the automotive and is highlighted in orange. In the background one other automotive. Shifting points are green – no hazard. So the automotive can react if the driving force is unobtrusive.
Automotive thinks about automotive drivers
Who decides – Pc or human?
The know-how can be to date. However the query of whether robots ought to be unbiased in visitors is launched, giving politicians and legal professionals troublesome moral questions: who is accountable if the robotic automotive causes an accident: manufacturer, programmer, proprietor or driver? And the way does it look out of the atypical road visitors?
The automotive feels that automotive drivers are
If it is too harmful for individuals
For instance in struggle – if you want to transfer Materials from place to put. Or after a chemical or nuclear accident, if the contaminated area of individuals is just too harmful. Developers can build unbiased automobiles that can fulfill as we speak's practical tasks, as right here at the Polish Military Academy.
Automotive thinks of automotive drives
Presentation of Unbiased Robots
The Polish Army Academy ELROB, a European robot competition, was organized in the summertime of 2014. 5 days have been capable of measure such autonomous automobiles. This Swiss RUAG driver was first introduced in 2012 in Thun, Switzerland.
Automotive thinks of automotive drives
Palms off the wheel!
The car drives and not using a driver in a storm lure, despite the fact that the know-how is broken, but a minimum of man isn’t broken. Nevertheless, within the ELROB train, someone had to sit within the cockpit by urgent the emergency stop button if one thing went improper.

bye 2017, hey 2018
I feel like I always get around to writing an end of the year post on tumblr even if i never really even get to use this site during the year.
well I guess it’s that time of the year (or new year I should say) where I try and look back as well as look forward.
let’s see what happened in 2017...
- let’s say, for one, ‘Murica as a whole kinda went through a lot of bullshit (still is honestly) - we’re getting rid of DACA, the tax cut bill was passed (holla @ the rich 10% and say bye to the other 90%), we’re slowly trying to get rid of/fuck up the EPA despite climate change being very real (if category 4-5 hurricanes occurring back to back is what we’d call “real”), and ya know just the firing of members of the HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention council in the government - to name a few (not to mention, continued police brutality, racial discrimination/injustice (tbh just racism as a whole), and dumb ass fucking people who - ugh
well, moving on to maybe more lighthearted moments...
- I tried to infiltrate the Asian community a little more with (mixed, mostly unsuccessful) efforts. Idk man I tried. I think I did make stronger relationships with the Asian friends I started out with so, I think that’s definitely a major plus. (*insert thumbs up here*)
- also, kinda along with that one, I think I dived into more adventurous food/hangout spots in terms of finding kinda Asian hubs and places I vibe with (an accomplishment of last year too that I think worked and flourished even more in 2017).
- Kind of cooled down with the whole going out scene. I still go out occasionally and have a pretty good time but it’s definitely dwindled down. We definitely started the year going out more but like I said, definitely calmed down a lot.
- Went to my first Terp Thon FTK! Started my TTPT journey with the 1 million dollar year - pretty crazy and amazing. It was truly and unreal experience for all those kids and wouldn’t have changed it for anything. Super sad I won’t be there for Terp Thon 2018 though.
- oh! successfully (kinda) resurrected my GPA from a sad 2.7 (result of getting a 1.7 from failing calc2 and getting a D in bio) to a nice and solid 3.23 which I am tbh very proud of. A 3.8 and 3.88 (technically straight As - woo hooooo) these last two semesters - yay! Just also improving in school as a whole. I’m really starting to enjoy what I’m doing. yeah, spring ‘17 sem was more chill and fall ‘17 sem was more like hell but, overall I’m pretty excited about the work and studies I get to do. (like hell as in 3 2900-3200-word papers in the span of like 2 weeks)
- Another academic thing, I added Art History (officially) as a Double Major which probably means a winter term here or there but still very exciting. I also feel like I’ve really learned a lot about the fundamentals of art history that I really felt like I was missing this whole time. Just like the basic timeline of movements and key artists from Burgundian Netherlands to Venice to Rococo to Realism to Cubism (and all its various forms) to Der Blauer Reiter to Contemporary and everything in between. All cool stuff - definitely makes you pay attention more to dates and stuff when visiting galleries and museums and just makes me feel more in the know if nothing else.
- Again, another academic thing, I’m officially in the English Honors Program - woo hoo! This does, however, mean I’ll be writing a 25-page thesis but honestly it’ll be fine, I’m fine, it’s all fine... I mean I don’t really know what I’m gonna write about and I have to skype my professor for like 2 months in the summer but hey, it’s all good and if it’s not I’ll just figure it out (*insert nervous sheepish grin here*)
- Kind of started the process of cutting off 아빠 which take that with a grain of salt. It’s a mess tbh, I don’t even know what to say honestly.
- Finally left Slaveway for good. It really tbh started becoming too much of a risk and just uncomfortable for me to stay. Not an awful job (despite the shit customers a lot of the time) but I just couldn’t stay longer.
- I feel like there was also definitely a more solidifying of sustained relationships and a distancing in others. I don’t know definitely still a lot just up in the air and a lot of familiar faces but a lot of new things and stronger bonds in 2017.
(now, post looking at my snapchat memories from the year and realizing how much shit I did this year... lol)
- I went to 2 concerts (kinda); one being 2 Chainz and all of the many acts that came before him at Art Attack 2017 and the other being Khalid’s bomb American Teen Tour concert at the Filmore that I initially just went to because Sam wanted to go and Anh had an extra ticket that ended up being real lit.
- Had like a little fame after writing an Odyssey Online article about Moco which was kinda cool and kinda ridiculous lol. I also just stopped writing for them all together after like less than one sem rip.
- Also realizing I went to a lot of really cool exhibits and art-related things this past year which I’m really happy about actually. Yayoi Kusama’s exhibit was crazy amazing and well worth the wait. Artec house was really cool and just visiting the NGA, the PMA, the Hirshorn, the Freer/Sackler with a fresh and more knowledgeable outlook was really nice. Also starting those solo museum trips during the sem was really nice no matter how short-lived they were.
Honestly this year was very different from 2016 in many many ways. I think there’s been a lot more growth in this past year but I and the community around me definitely went through a lot.
- Something I realized this past year in unfortunate circumstances, was the prevalence of loss and losing individuals close to your community. I never thought things like death, loss, grief, and suicide were things that I would ever come across (let alone, this often) at this age. We really did lose a lot of young lives that were filled with so much potential and hope this past year especially in this community, including an old classmate. Things that we always thought to be intangible and far away landed right in front of us and I don’t think a lot of us including myself still know how to grasp all of that. It’s hard to see the people around you, the ones you grew up with and always had by your side whether you knew them well or not, lead such a tragic fate. This year made us think about mental health more and more. You realize in the most unfortunate circumstances that everyone has there own demons that they’re fighting. No one is free from them. Even in regards to Jonghyun, it affects everyone in the darkest of ways.
This past year really made me think more about how fragile life truly is. I’ve dealt with and still deal with my own demons and the dark thoughts of my past and truly wonder especially in light of all the tragic events from this past year, what things would be like. It would be a lie if I said that they didn’t make me wonder about past thoughts of my own more.
I think it’s sad to think that even as I wonder about all this, I still feel empty about it in the midst of being unable to process it all. I feel like in a way, whether as a result from school distracting me and my own self protecting or shielding itself, I’ve grown numb. I feel like my own mind is trying to avoid emotions at all cost in a way that’s pushing away emotion and problems by just not dealing with them (which by no means is the right way to deal with things at all bc you’re not dealing with anything). I don’t know, I guess I’m getting by and I’m not as broody as I was in the past but I wouldn’t say I’ve improved, I’ve just kind of paused in a way I guess.
I want to end this post with a brighter look toward the future though. I think 2018 has a lot of potential waiting to happen with lots of things to look forward to that I think should be highlighted in this post. After all, a new year means moving forward, not burying your past necessarily but, using the past to cast light on the future.
So with that, things to look forward to in 2018...
- First things first, STUDY ABROAD IN ROME for Spring ‘18 sem! I mean it doesn’t get more exciting and new than this honestly. Yes, I am super stressed and there’s so much stuff to do besides the fact that I’m paranoid and don’t know what to expect at all. I’ve never traveled abroad in my life, let alone lived away from home (ever) so this is just gonna be absolutely nuts tbh. I have lots of hopes though. Do I want a fairytale, movie-like experience? Lowkey, of course. But I also try to be a harsh realist when I can so, we’re staying generally tame about our study abroad fantasies lol. Still, I’m hoping this will be a chance to make new friends and hopefully make some of them in my art history classes as well as in the school in general. It’s been a hard few years in the whole making friends department seeing as how all my past roommates are very antisocial. Yes, I myself am also very much like this but that doesn’t mean my internal self doesn’t want a lot of friends lol. I’m excited to take a class with Evelyn and just experience the city while hopefully staying safe and smart. It’ll be a crazy and hopefully amazing semester with a lot of travel and just a lot of fun before my senior year. I could go on and on about all my thoughts and hopes for this coming semester but, I’ll just leave it at that (your girl really needs to sort her life out/figure out what to pack/pack/schedule the rest of my home excursions/get her documents together/everything else. Bottom line: we’re a mess lol.
- Hopefully a summer internship. Forreal forreal like actually. Your girl was stuck at safeway again this past year and we’re not having that shit again. Nope nuh-uh, not happening. Not this year mm mm, no. We’re gonna find one. We have to - it’s gonna happen. Trust and believe. Trust and believe!
- Also turning 21 this year (although, this probs won’t be exciting seeing as how I’ll be legal all semester while I’m abroad, then come home and be nonlegal for another like 2 months and then be legal again). Look, I’m just looking forward to getting mimosas and going to bars without memorizing random identity information from Illinois.
- Also 2018 is really gonna be a year for me to REALLY think about me. In all contexts, really. Academically; figuring out what it is I really want from my education and working toward making the most out of it, finding a real path for myself in terms of grad school and other things school-related. Lifewise; gauging how I’m going to continue my life. Graduation is coming faster than I can think and by this time next year, I’ll be gearing up for my last semester as an undergrad. That is so wild. 2018 is really gonna be me trying to buckle down, I suppose. Trying to cloud out my peers and their success/failures/paths and really try to hone in on myself. It’ll be a challenge but we’ve got to start somewhere, right?
All in all a lot was thrown onto the table in 2017 in a lot of different ways. It’s been a different kind of roller-coaster with much much more to come after this year (my favorite number year really, 2017). 2018 will be a test of time and one of the biggest challenges but, also hopefully a year with a lot of hope and potential for success. Wishing everyone the brightest new year with health, opportunities, growth, and burgeoning happiness! Cheers to all 2018 has to offer all of us and to all the things 2017 gave us!

Class 7:9: What I’ve Learned So Far
There has been much that I have been picking up in this course. Outside of technical jargon, there’s always the underlying factor that while I’m diving in and trying to learn something that the instructor hasn’t explained in-depth, I can rely on my peers and my own drive to succeed. Much like anyone who opens up an application on their phone or accesses the web on the computer. We’re all, in some shape or form, finding our voices and working together to shape what we want out of the technology that is created today. I’m certain that there is much more to learn, but what I have learned from Boston College’s Immersive Education in Collaborative Computing has been valuable. For those readers who find themselves particularly curious, check out http://ImmersiveEducation.org/@/bc. It’s worth the read!
When set with the decision to choose a pair of classes to take for my first semester at Boston College, I did not know what to expect out of Collaborative Computing. What new things would I learn, how well would I do, would I succeed in the challenge of this course? The latter question is up for debate, but at this point in time I can reflect on what I’ve learned so far and how this class is developing a better understanding of what to expect when applying what I’ve learned to the real world.
From the beginning, we were expected to interact with each other. Sometimes, with a class, you listen more to an instructor or teacher rather than communicating with one another and that wasn’t as apparent with this class as we were directed to turn to each other. Right out the gate, we were asked to express what was on our mind and communicate with one another, whilst being thrown into Google Groups, which was a new kind of collaborative forum I wasn’t aware existed. With Google Groups, it allows its users to keep pace with discussions and keep you updated through associated email. I didn’t know where simple discussions about our day was going, but in reflection it was the primary blocks that would lead us to build bonds to work together, because how can you really collaborate on a topic if you aren’t comfortable speaking with one another? It also reflects on the real world as in any situation whether it be in your personal life or especially in a work environment, you depend upon the people around you to get information and to create situations to provide a favorable outcome.
We were directed to become familiar with Tumblr, a blogging website, where we would post our assignments. A friend told me about this website at one point and I shrugged the site off, finding it to be time I would waste, but have found that submitting my thoughts and knowing that my peers will look over it or that others might find interest in my writing, has been an inspirational tool. We were then familiarized by the Learning Ladder, which was an introduction to Google Spreadsheets, where we would grow to collaborate on the completion of our assignments and be aware of those invested in the class.
As we built the foundation of how we would interact with each other, the computing part started to take shape as we were then introduced to Immersive Education. Immersive Education, in short summary, is a Collaboration of like-minded individuals, corporations and educational entities, like MIT, Harvard, The Smithsonian and NASA, to name a few, where they meet together on summits that feature break-out sessions, workshops and discussions that discuss the current advancements of technology. In class we were introduced to Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Stealth Learning that is featured in popular games like Minecraft! When we tackled each topic, we were expected to blog about it, reaffirming our goal to always collaborate on our topic as we would also be expected to offer peer review.
A few things that I have learned have been that by using virtual learning environments, people with Autism are being helped to develop socialization skills that work at their own pace without the fear and pressure that come with the real world. I’ve learned about the key players in who are working towards developing stronger technological advances like VR’s Oculus Rift and HTC or AR’s Magic Leap and Microsoft’s HoloLens. I’ve learned how video gaming has influenced a lot of people’s perspectives on how they want to tackle real life tasks and how it’s bringing us into the future.
We’ve continued to learn how to use tools like Bitmap GIMP and how to improve our followers using social media to connect and network and as a result the skills I now have under my belt is certainly valuable as I now have the knowledge of using Audio Whiteboard, a program that allows its users to meet in a collaborative “room” where we can voice chat, share presentations, video chat if desired, and interact in ways that maintains organization with hand raising as a feature!
I can confidently say that I’m a lot more familiar with collaborative outreaches and ways to approach them and how Social Media plays a large role and how technology is influencing those changes on a daily basis. An example, YouTube, where people can make a video about almost anything, collaborate with their peers and submit it to the world! It’s created its own culture and a vast response in shaping how people share news and communicate with one another. Marketing plays another large factor in this as well as over the span of social media, you can see how it is utilized as tools to bring attention to products, ideas and projects that might not have had as broad of an outreach in the past.
