MY BIRTHDAY! I'm turning 31 today so flip that around and here's 13 of my favorite songs of all time (in random order)

"Passive" A Perfect Circle. Grief, rage, desperation... this song has it all and gave the world some great AMVs.

"Magician" Lexie Liu. Cunty electropop. Perfect motivator in a work out playlist or, well, great for a magic girl AMV, lmfao.

"What a Feeling" One Direction. Pop perfection. Argue with a wall if you disagree.

"Bloodsport" Raleigh Ritchie. Again, just what a perfect song for editing footage together in your head. Also, he sounds so beautiful here. Sometimes, he can get a bit cheesy but here it's perfect. Special mention that doesn't count towards the 13 songs, "Time in a Tree."

"Better off Alone" Alice Deejay. BEST DANCE SONG OF ALL TIME

"Dogfight" M.O.V.E. High octane, eurobeat infused J-Rock song for a racing show. It feels like injecting GOTTA GO FAST into your bloodstream

The entirety of the album Details by Frou Frou feels like dancing in the clouds, the dew drops of the sky dripping down your face in grief and love and hope. It's my birthday, so this counts as as one song. Also, shout out to her music under Imogen Heap, including, "Sweet Religion," "Glistening Clouds," "Bad Body Double," "Loose Ends," "Come Here Boy." And her collab "My Secret Friend"

"Capable of Love" + "Mosquito" being on the same Pinkpanthress project is insane!!! INSANE!!! MAGICAL MUSIC!

"Password" Shinee. IDK if this is their best song but it is their most powerful song. I have to play it a million times in a row every time I hear it. See also: "Odd Eye," "Symptoms," "Tell Me What To Do," "I Want You," "Kind," "Identity."

"BYOB" System of a Down. SOAD is why I can't take insults of nu metal seriously. This song is still relevant to this day.

"Atomic" and "Coloris" by She. Do you know how good the music has to be for me to ignore the white producer using an anime/Japanese girl as his avatar? God tier electronica.

"Veridis Quo" Daft Punk My Fave DP song changes daily but I'm feeling this song at 31. A song that feels like an ache, like a prayer.

"Welcome Home" Coheed & Cambria. The guitar alone... holy shit. HOLY SHIT. Love this entire album to pieces!!! TBH

move: REWIND ~singles collection+~ (2004.03.24)

One thing Avex Trax is really great at is sticking to its time-tested and timeworn approaches. The label started out with mega-popular co-ed, hi-nrg, eurodance groups like trf in the 90s, and every few years, banked on that popularity by trying the same thing, whether by forming more co-ed groups when everybody else had stopped doing that a long time ago, or continuing to explore and dabble in dance music and all of its various sub-genres, like super eurobeat and trance, long after they had ceased to capture the attention of the general public and disappeared from the charts. In the late 90s they did both with the group move.

move were the successors to globe, with a makeup very much like their godfathers: a trio featuring a woman on lead vocals as the general face of the group, and two men, one the MC/rapper, and the other the aloof, technical mastermind. The group began releasing music in 1997 with their debut single "ROCK IT DOWN," and coasted along with a pretty solid set of dance-pop hits before they began making music in the style of the Avex dance-genre-of-the-moment, trance. Their trance-pop phase lasted from about 2001 to 2003. These first two phases of the group's career were collected in their second greatest hits collection, REWIND ~singles collection+~, released in 2004, just before they went into a third, entirely different musical direction, unnecessarily changed their name by adding periods and using all-caps instead of all lowercase, and started declining in popularity anyway. The only thing that really sets this release apart from their previous greatest hits is that move super tune -BEST SELECTIONS- from 2002 was released as a non-stop megamix that shortened some songs and played around with their structure a bit to create a seamless, DJ-like club experience. This singles collection presents each song in its entirety, and also features two years worth of extra singles, in addition to the bonus track "T.R.A.P.," a B-side to "¡WAKE YOUR LOVE!"

Since I fell off the move fan wagon after they stopped releasing trance music, this collection is pretty perfect. It has their most well-known hits from the late 90s, and then the amazing run of 8+ minute-long trance singles from the SYNERGY album, like "come together" and "Romancing Train."

One thing that really sticks out to me about this release is the track list. There are two discs, but rather than proceed chronologically so that the first disc contains singles from the group's first, more eurobeat musical phase, and the second the trance phase, they are split across the two in chronological order, so you get a progression of half of each of the phases on both discs. This really works if you like both of the genres, as it means you get a taste of both without being overwhelmed with just one of them all at once, though it might not work so well for somebody who just wants one of the genres on a single disc, or wants them strictly in the order that they were released.

The limited edition includes a DVD that contains music videos for many of the singles, for 17 in total (for comparison, there are 21 tracks on the two CDs). Just about all of them feature the members in front of green screens or other abstract settings, performing for the camera. motsu does all of the heavy-lifting re: energy and personality, yuri does the awkward, zombie avex-sway, and t-kimura is always too cool to be bothered, busy being surrounded by keyboards.

The limited edition also includes a mini cellphone cleaner that you could attach to the type of mobile phones people used back in 2004. There's nothing fancy here, but you get solid content, and if you like this era of the group, this compilation is recommended over the abridged and inferior m.o.v.e 10th Anniversary MEGA BEST or Best moves. ~and move goes on~.

I don’t have enough followers for an ask meme--let alone one for a niche fandom like Acceleracers--so I’m just gonna fill (most of) this out on my oWN. Credit goes to @tomiyeee​ for the meme and the post can be found here!

How did you first get into the series? It’s all @schnellicanth​‘s fault (and I love him for it) -- I think it was around 2019? We watched it for a group movie night, and MAN I thought for sure I’d be able to multitask during World Race... couldn’t. Didn’t. I was enthralled.

What do you like most about the series? I’m a character enjoyer & there are, in fact, many very lovely characters to enjoy. I just.. I love them, man. There’s really only one that I actively dislike, and that’s uhh. Vert’s dad. Sorry, dude. Do better.

Favorite & least favorite movie? I think World Race/Highway 35 is the weak link in the series as a whole? It’s still super enjoyable, don’t get me wrong! But it’s less imminently rewatchable for me (when all by myself, anyway).

I think my favourite is Breaking Point? Really enjoy the drama, aha. Also, in the (unlisted) Initial eDition put together by my aforementioned friend--he put m.o.v.e’s “Outsoar the Rainbow” over the Silencerz’ opening sequence. And it’s probably one of my most favourite things ever.

Favorite & least favorite character(s)? My ultimate fave is Wylde -- he’s my son. I won’t accept criticism. I know he’s a huge jerk in Acceleracers, but 8′) as a former Younger Sibling with a complicated relationship to my elder brother? Relatable. He’s really just a scared / traumatised kid, man... I care him. He needs to Do Better, but I care him so much. I also really Love/Hate Tezla, but that’s its own whole thing. Honourable mentions include: Shirako, Vert, Kurt, and Taro (really I love them all tho)

Least favourite! I think I already mentioned... it’s Major Wheeler. I sympathise with being a single parent & a widower, but also man. There’s a couple of things he says which REALLY bug me, y’know? ‘You don’t know how sorry I am’ isn’t an apology! Do better. Vert deserves better.

Favorite & least favorite car(s)? I may be biased, but I do really like Spinebuster, aha. Also, Bassline. I’m not sure I have a least fave? Tho the Deora II is sure silly lookin.

Thoughts on the redesigns? I think they’re fine! Taro takes a bit of a hit & I def prefer his WR look, but I think he’s mostly victim to art style rather than the design itself. (also I find Wylde’s Princess Peach lips v funny & good)

Favorite World Race team? Wave Rippers :p Probably for being more memorable than the others, since they have like. the highest number of prominent cast members.

Teku or Metal Maniacs? I love them equally. They both have really fun team dynamics <3

Silencerz or the Drones? Drones. They sure ain’t good guys, but I trust the Silencerz less...

What ships do you like (if any)? I’ve created my own Dinghy. >>;;

My OTP is Vert/Mark Wylde -- like post-canon, once they’ve had a chance to make up. Coz I think it’s a damn shame that the breakdown in their friendship was never addressed :< I wan them to... be friends.... and maybe more....

Tho I’ve seen a lot of Vert/Nolo & Vert/Shirako in the fandom tag. I think that’s also super valid and neat.

Otherwise? I think I polycule’d Taro/Kurt/Karma/Lani together. Just. As ya do. Kadeem can also get in there if he wants. It’s not a super uniform relationship--some are closer to and/or more romantic with certain members more than others--but I can’t & shan’t be tamed.

I do enjoy Karma/Lani & Taro/Kadeem as individual ships. Maybe Taro/Lani with a little post-canon patching up. Though, Kurt I don’t really ship with anyone by himself. Sorry, man >u<

Random headcanon/theory about [insert character/faction/event/etc]? Gosh, I have so many. I am very pleased, though, with the random HC I have that Shirako lives with his grandparents (or, rather, they live with him). They’re both very supportive & interested in his hobbies.

Nothing happened to his parents, mind. They just decided to move to Japan not long after he became an adult, and he chose to stay. He loves his grandparents & his friends very much. :>

Any crossover/AU ideas? Uhhh, I think I tossed around the idea of an Oban Star-Racers crossover -- didn’t really come up with anything. I just think it would be neat to smash my two favourite racing series together.

If you could change anything about the story, what would it be? The only thing I can think of is like. :( Kadeem. I don’t mind so much what happens as much as I wish there had been time to truly resolve everything. Kadeem deserves to live and be happy.

Do you have any unpopular opinions about the series? Well, just based on what I’ve seen in the tags, I seem to be in the minority when I say I really love Mark Wylde. So, take that as you will.

What would you like to see/have seen in a continuation? See above.

Since I think there’s some really neat narrative parallels between Mark & Kurt’s relationship vs Vert and Major Wheeler’s relationship... Vert takes the other path. Instead of unconditional forgiveness, Vert decides that, while he still loves his father, doesn’t hate him... nothing like that. It’s just really complicated. Maybe it’s better right now if he takes time away from his father.

Denys Cowan on Milestone Comics and Characters

Karama Horne: What’s it like seeing all of the new love for your original Milestone characters now?

Denys Cowan: A little surreal. I didn't know until recently that people are [still] really into these characters like that. So it's extremely gratifying. It's awesome. What a feeling to know that you help create something that people really respond to and still love. That's quite a thing to have happen, and not many people get to experience that.

KH: You mentioned recently on DC Universe that Milestone’s "Bang Babies," who were targeted by the police, were inspired by the real-life bombing of the M.O.V.E. organization in Philadelphia. Can you expand on that?

DC: I remember discussing this with Dwayne and trying to figure out how our characters were going to have powers. We had to create this whole universe. Dwayne was the one who brought up the M.O.V.E. organization and what happened [in Philadelphia] and how the cops blew up an entire city block trying to get this one organization and they killed all these people.

We instantly thought, "Oh! There's the catalyst." This is what the cops [in the Dakotaverse] are going to do to these kids. Once these "so-called gangs" are gathered, they're going to just bomb everybody. Except these bombs will have the [agent that gives them their powers]. We just extrapolated from there. So it wasn't a revelation or a big discussion. We just used that as inspiration. It was a little shocking to us at the time [to learn] that it had really happened, but at that time, we were in all our 30s and there wasn't a whole lot that shocked us.

KH: Who was your favorite Milestone character?

DC:  Oh, they're all my favorite really. Probably the one I identify with the most is probably Hardware. Because that was the first thing that Dwayne and I did at Milestone together. I mean, we created everything, uh, you know, static, all the other characters. But the book that Dwayne and I decided to do together, we could've picked anything, um, was Hardware only because he best expressed how we felt about the comics industry and how we felt about things at that time. You know, it's like the, I think the first title in the first issue was "Angry Black Man," which should have told you everything about where we were. Not everyone's favorite cup of tea, but I certainly got a big kick out of doing Hardware. I really did.

It was also building on the success of what we explored [previously] in Deathlok: The Souls of Cyberfolk, which is basically the story of a black man trapped in a monster's body or a brain trapped in a body a metaphor for our experiences. How people perceive you and what you really are.

KH: So many people are excited about Milestone’s return. Can you give us any details as to if or when will happen?

DC:  There were a couple of legal things that got in the way of Milestone launching originally. Unfortunately, you know, those are those the situations that people have to deal with and they happen in life. Those situations have been dealt with, successfully. We're all delighted with the results and now we're moving forward full steam ahead. I can't tell you exactly when you're going to see stuff, but I can tell you that you will see stuff and we'll be able to share some of the awesome things that we've been developing over the years and the new stuff that we're doing now. But we are unshackled, free and we're going to have stuff on the fans really soon and it's stuff that we're really excited about. I can't give you exact dates yet, but it's on and poppin' again.

Anime: My Favorite Anime OP/ED Songs From the 90s

I’ve already made a ‘favorite anime list’ before...but for me, music often stands out when I’ve already forgotten a series. I started watching anime in the early 90s when it was finally starting to gain a little traction in the US. This list is in no order whatsoever, and I will only pick a single song from each series (opening or ending). This list doesn’t necessarily mean that I loved the series or even liked it...but that I just really loved a song from it. I won’t be linking to the songs because Tumblr hates that, but I will give you all of the information needed to find it if you wish ^^

1. Cowboy Bebop “Tank!” by Seatbelts (1998)

Such a great series, and such an iconic theme song. Years later, I still love this jazz heavy theme song.

2. Trigun “H.T.” by Tsuneo Imahori (1998)

Again, an iconic theme to another iconic anime. This is a rare non-lyrical rock theme song in the days of heavy pop music.

3. Rurouni Kenshi “HEART OF SWORD 〜夜明け前〜” by T.M. Revolution (1996)

There are many amazing theme songs from Kenshin, but out of all of them, this one remains my favorite. Even though it was an ending song, it didn’t feel like it at all.

4. SLAYERS! “Risky Gamble” by Masami Okui (1996)

This was one of the first series I ever watched. It had amazing music all the way through but there’s just something about this song that makes me want to listen to it over and over again.

5. Ranma 1/2 “Little☆Date” (リトル☆デイト) by Ribbon (1989)

Okay, so, I’m going a little bit before the 90s. But I’m adding it here because I don’t have enough for an 80s list. But this series was one of my favorites back then, and this song had such a great beat to it that I can still remember it years later.

6. Cardcaptor Sakura “Tobira wo Akete” (扉をあけて) by ANZA (1999)

I would say this anime was one of my guilty pleasures back then, because even I didn’t really know why I loved it so much (still don’t). But It had the right amount of charm to keep me invested. This song was my absolute favorite of all the songs in that series.

7. Fushigi Yuugi “Itooshii Hito no Tame Ni” (いとおしい人のために) by Satou Akemi (1995)

Shock of all shocks, I did really like some of the shoujo series back in those days. This was the very definition of a reverse harem, but I remember staying up as late as I could to watch it on VHS (fansubbed). This was the main theme song of the series, and it fit it perfectly.

8. The Vision of Escaflowne “Yakusoku Wa Iranai” (約束はいらない) by Maaya Sakamoto (1996)

This was another shoujo series that I really loved (and the only one I’ve ever seen where Mecha wear capes). This was also the main theme of the series and it’s pretty unforgettable. “Sora” by Yokko Kano from the Escaflowne movie is another one that I really love...very haunting.

9. Serial Experiments Lain “Duvet” by Bôa (1998)

Even though I can’t really remember much about the series itself at this point, I remember this song very well. Very alternative rock but the song fit the mood of the animation very well.

10. Mobile Suit Gundam Wing “Just Communication” by Two-Mix (1995)

I really loved this anime I still think this is one of my favorite anime theme songs ever. It fits the action and the dark tone of the series very well. 

11. Outlaw Star “Through the Night” by Masahiko Arimachi (1998)

This is a toss up for me... because as much as I love this rocking opening theme song...I genuinely love the haunting ending “Daytime Moon” by Akino Arai, as well. But I will give the props to this song because because it’s fun, catchy and works well with the series.

12. Lost Universe “Extrication” by Megumi Hayashibara (1999)

This spiritual successor of “Slayers!” (with one of the most frustrating endings ever in an anime) also boasted the talents of the ever amazing Megumi Hayashibara. This song is so catchy that it’s hard to not love it. It almost made up for the ending. 

13. Record of Lodoss War “Kiseki no Umi” by Maaya Sakamoto (1998)

Told you you’d see her name again. I remember watching this series but I don’t remember much at all about it, to be honest. However, I do remember this song...and it’s beautiful. She was one of my favorite artists of that time. 

14. Initial D 1st Stage “Around The World” by m.o.v.e (1998)

I’ll be completely honest...I’ve never seen this anime before. However, I did download this song by accident and I ended up really liking it. Definitely dated, but a good song for the time.

15. Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team “Arashi no Naka de Kagayaite” by Chihiro Yonekura (1998)

This is a series that I didn’t like in the end, but I did love the opening theme song. Just goes to show that a show doesn’t have to be good to have good music.

Oooh, do you have any non-English music recs? I listen to J-rock and K-pop, but I'm trying to diversify. From widely spoken languages like Chinese, Russian, German, Spanish, and French to smaller languages like Romanian, Greek, or Navajo. Give me all you've got, new or old, fun or sad idc. I'd love that *chef's finger kiss* LGBT shit, but it isn't necessary ❤️

To preface, I do not understand how to classify most music genres, so I won't be able to be super specific besides like "dance music" or "sad music" or whatever.

Also, I rarely listen to full albums/discographies, so if I just recommend one song, you'd probably benefit from checking their other stuff!

Also, also, also because I don't really do deep dives a lot of my recs aren't very obscure lmao I'm gonna try to not rec too much J/Kpop on that basis because you've porbably heard it! If you want J/Kpop tell me what you already listen to and I can base it off that. I'll only do a bit more obscure groups not like... Twice.

Dance Music:

Ntozabantu by Lebo Mathosa. Pure dance anthem from South Africa.

赤伶 (DJ名龙 Remix) by 等什么君. Normally I can get English titles for songs but noope. Still, this is more vocal based and remixed to be dancier but I really enjoy it. Got it off a skateboarding tiktok?? 昭华情 is also by them and is just REALLY pretty but isn't dancy.. I'm assuming it's mandarin, sorry if I got that wrong!

Iskaba by Wande Coal is great Nigerian based house music. Primarily in English but not fully! I listen to this song once a week, it's so smooth.

More basic pop and not really dance:

Tourner la Page by Zaho. Kinda sad and piano based but still radio friendly. French!

Soul Lady by Yukika. Not basic pop, but it's city pop. I wouldn't quite call it dance music?? It's city pop. Her latest song is pretty and more vocal city kpop.

Thank U Sooooo Much" by Yubin, an ex member of Wonder Girls. Retro kpop! Has great synth. Maybe belongs under dance music? Again, I do not understand genres.

Yellow by Koh Kamiyama. IDK what genre to call this? Just like... Japanese... alt pop? I don't know genres. There's fake guitar happening. I wouldn't call it JRock tho

Also , it's because of VK that I've an absolute distaste for love triangle in any shape or form .It is indeed a shame the potential of the characters and the manga as a whole were ruined all for what ? the crappiest romance in shoujo history !!! and for the sake of one of the most bland and underwhelming shoujo heroine of all time .

and I’ve to add something regarding Zero who was always the faithful vampire puppy happy to get any scrap from Yuuki’s affection .If you aren’t somebody ’s first choice and said person isn’t completely committed to you M.O.V.E ON don’t be happy to be the second choice there are plenty of fish in the sea find someone who is worthy don’t settle for leftovers .

I’m not a fan of love triangles in general either. However, in a lot of cases it’s dealt with extremely well. Orange is a good example of that. I think the problem with VK’s love triangle is that Hino literally sacrificed everything for the sole reason of keeping it alive. The plot, Yuuki’s dignity, heck even Kaname’s and Zero’s dignity. Literally everything went down the drain in favour of the LT just because Hino was a giant coward and didn’t want to make Yuuki choose. It’s quite sad, because VK had an amazing potential. The atmosphere, the world it takes place in, the way vampires operate… it’s just really good and well-developed. The manga could have been amazing in the hands of a more capable writer. It’s a shame really.

I agree with what you said about Zero. But tbh the same could have been said about Kaname. These guys hang onto Yuuki way too much. They deserve so much better, someone who can give their entire heart to them. The difference between Kaname and Zero is that at least Kaname eventually left lol. Can’t blame him tbh. :”D
