If I were more technologically educated when it came to modern day video games I think the funniest thing to do would be to make mods for modern games that force them to run on 8GB of ram and 2GB graphics cards. Because it would be funny.
#first game on the list would be either dragons dogma 2 or FF16#this is all wishful thinking tho these games run on all different types of engines so yeah#id have to learn how to work with like 10 types of engines and also my computer isnt strong enough to run them as they are anyway#the only engines i have experience with finagling with are the creation engine and UE4 so shrugs#i did manage to get Oblivion with FCOM running on an integrated 128MB gpu tho. dont recommend it but i did it

Really annoyed that PC's aren't really made with optical disc drives anymore, support of old games and DVDs aside, what am I gonna do the next time I don't have a free flash drive?? I used to use a CD-RW as a makeshift USB when in a pinch and knew that every pc could read it even if it was a tad strange.
#dont get me started on the eventual phaseout of USB A; they better make USB C flash drives or im busting out the adapter#ive made it work on my phone when the sd was full and ill do it again#tetranynous.txt#i know the answer is just chuck it on onedrive (free terabyte from uni)#but i just cant come to terms with the death of physical media#and no im not going to carry around a usb cd drive#(i dont own one) since it sort of defeats the convinience of carrying just a disc that can be read anywhere#and at that point id just get a bulk pack of usbs (esp since i can turn them into bootable media nowadays)#anyways this rant was in part becaude i found 80% of a relatively modern pc thrown out that im gonna try to turn into a cad pc#and the motherboard doesnt have a spot for a cd drive#or multiple expansion slots :|#granted it is one of those itty bitty tiny boards (weird) but like do gamers not put multiple gpus (crossfire) in pcs anymore???#although i guess theres integrated now so they already usually have 2; BUT im gonna one up that with a mere thinkpad#(egpu; can put in the expresscard slot; literally just a desktop gpu and power supply)#anyways unpug-ifying that tiny thing and putting it a proper case with proper airflow and a sick paint job nature is healing

would like to make a note for mac users: if you can help it do not use avira. it's owned by the same parent company as avast (and avg. both are notorious for shit business ethics, shit customer privacy protection, and shit bloatware). gen digital is good at taking your money and bad at protecting you and it is on purpose lmao. please use malwarebytes it works on mac just fine. if you're broke like me and are fairly tech savvy (or willing to experience a learning curve) use clamAV
Things that will make your computer meaningfully faster:
Replacing a HDD with an SSD
Adding RAM
Graphics cards if you're nasty
Uninstalling resource hogs like Norton or McAfee (if you're using Windows then the built-in Windows Security is perfectly fine; if you're using a mac consider bitdefender as a free antivirus or eset as a less resource intensive paid option)
Customizing what runs on startup for your computer
Things that are likely to make internet browsing specifically meaningfully faster:
Installing firefox and setting it up with ublock origin
adding the Auto Tab Discard extension to firefox to sleep unused tabs so that they aren't constantly reloading
Closing some fucking tabs bud I'm sorry I know it hurts I'm guilty of this too
Things that will make your computer faster if you are actually having a problem:
Running malwarebytes and shutting down any malicious programs it finds.
Correcting disk utilization errors
Things that will make your computer superficially faster and may slightly improve your user experience temporarily:
Clearing cache and cookies on your browser
Restarting the computer
Changing your screen resolution
Uninstalling unused browser extensions
Things that do not actually make your computer faster:
Deleting files
Registry cleaners
Defragging your drive
Passively wishing that your computer was faster instead of actually just adding more fucking RAM.
This post is brought to you by the lady with the 7-year-old laptop that she refuses to leave overnight for us to run scans on or take apart so that we can put RAM in it and who insists on coming by for 30-minute visits hoping we can make her computer faster.
#basically anything owned by gen digital (avast and avg to name two) is guaranteed Shit#i really need to make an ''illusion of choice'' meme where all major antiviruses are just gen digital#most commercial antiviruses these days are either selling your info or have a shit ton of bloatware. or both#when theyre not purposefully selling it theyre experiencing security breaches#theyve even used your antivirus on your personal computer to cryptomine. with their whole chests. i am NEVER letting that shit go lmao#also they will straight up Lie to you about web security certificates if u are using them for that. so.#if your goal is security. uh. dont use that shit. is my advice.#anyways the rest of this is fairly solid info just for the love of god stay away from gen digital and look for other reputable antiviruses.#ky speaks#oh also since its not specified in the post:#dedicated gpu is better than integrated if ur gonna be using ur computer for anything graphics or processing heavy#games art design you name it#like theres nuance here as far as specific GPUs and generations and all but typically speaking. make sure n get a dedicated GPU#if you just want something for office/school work that is not going to heavily use your gpu or cpu then integrated is good and also cheaper

I know a bit about computers so heres how some of the specs work:
-RAM: 8 GB is good for most things, but if you have anything real intensive (High definiton games or rendering) you should get more (and you can probably add more later depending on how many slots there are for that)
-CPU: how many cores is how many different threads (think of each computer process as an embroidery and each thread as a thread) can be processed at once and GHZ is the speed at which threads are processed. I'm not quite sure about how many cores and how much speed you need, but you should definitely get a CPU with multiple cores
-long-term storage: more storage is better, especially if you're going to be creating and saving a bunch of files (I reccomend 1 TB), also SSDs (Solid State Drives) are better than HDDs (Hard Disk Drives) in terms of data integrity (magnets dont destroy data) and data retrieval but im not sure about how long each type lasts. HDDs have mechanical parts that can wear down or break, but SSDs technically have a limited amount of uses of each tiny place where data is written
-graphics card/GPU: a seperate processor (sometimes even some RAM too) for rendering images on the screen, make sure that the computer you're getting does NOT have "integrated graphics" (or at least has a graphics card in addition to integrated graphics) because that is a tiny card that isn't very powerful at all
-cooling: water cooling is better than fan cooling, but you probably won't need it
-make sure the computer comes with all the ports and drives you want for it (CD/DVD drive if you want it, legacy ports if you want those for older devices, enough USB ports for the USB devices you want to attach to it)
Hope I helped! Good luck with computer stuff
thank you anon I could kiss you
I know im not gonna get the best computer on the market with my mediocre budget, but this is definitely gonna help narrow things down!

hi bestie is this decent do u think (it says brand and name, cpu (with integrated gpu??), and the rest u can probably understand)
oh the specs look solid! 500gb ssd and 8gb ram is like muah love it. ryzen 7 too muah even tho 3700U is not bad i would say
(it goes like 7 (best) > 5 > 3 and 5000u >4000u >3000u)
('>' standing for better than so like ryzen 7 3700u is better than ryzen 5 3700u but ryzen 5 4000somethingu is more modern than ryzen 7 3700u if u get what i mean)
integrated graphics mean u cant do heavy duty gaming. but then again most laptop dont have a separate graphics card unless they're "gaming" laptops. and over here it says vega mobile..... 2? i'm assuming it says vega moblie and 2.3ghz clock speed which means u prob can run low resolution games
its looks like a very good solid student laptop with really good specs but its gonna have a really hard time if you're gonna play gta or fortnite
#its not the intel version but amd version which is like thank god thats better#and its fast. its gotta be with that 500gb ssd#if thats on budget thats a good deal i would buy it but then again i dont care for gaming#scentistmp3#i have like 5000 diff tags for u and i keep forgetting all of them jkdfllkjsdh

Opengl 3.3 driver amd
Posted on Friday evening was a patch to enable OpenGL 3. The complete list of all extensions is available in THIS ENTRY of the GPU database. Opengl 3 3 freeload - OpenGL, Photo Story 3 for Windows, Doom 3 demo, and many more program INTEL HD GRAPHICS 3000 OPENGL 3.3 DRIVER DOWNLOAD - The time now is Mrsoccer I have the same problem.
GL_ARB_texture_mirror_clamp_to_edge ( OpenGL 4.4).
v3960 adds 3 new extensions compared to v3652: V3960 is an OpenGL 4.3 driver ( GL_VERSION=4.3.0 – Build 10.) and exposes 206 OpenGL extensions (GL=187 and WGL=19).
This driver is compatible with the Intel® Integrated Native Developer Experience (INDE) 2015 – Media RAW Accelerator and INDE 2015 – Media SDK for Windows.
Ive tried this on Ubuntu 18.04LTS live disc but the output of glxinfo was identical and displayed OpenGL 3. From the glxinfo command it seems I dont have the newest version of mesa (19.0.2) while kisaks ppa for example shows 19.3.2 and oibaf shows some hash (as of writing).
Up to 50% improvement with OpenCL benchmarking application *CompuBench and up to 10% improvement with Sandra 2014* Yet my OpenGL version reads 3.3 instead of the 4.1 I get on windows.
This driver brings performance on Dirt 3* back to parity with the last 15.33 driver.
This feature is used by Adobe* applications such Photoshop CC*
Added support for OpenCL extension cl_intel_simultaneous_sharing to allow sharing of memory buffers between OpenCL, OpenGL, and DirectX.
Not sure if this is a complement to download. Of course, it is accessible to download amd opengl or nvidia opengl driver on amd or nvidia site. In this explanation, we ran the command line on windows 10. Either your video card is unsupported, or your opengl driver needs to be updated.
The idea will be to check the status on mesa 10. Ati gfx using one of amd app sdk 3 or update. He represents AMD at the ARB and has contributed to many extensions and to the core OpenGL. TODO: make a nice array of the opengl extension. Currently, Graham is a manager on the OpenGL driver team at AMD. It is recommended to use proprietary drivers.
(ARB_texture_mirror_clamp, GL_EXT_TEXTURE_ARRAY, Reduced recompilation of shaders in multi-context scenarios) Nvidia and AMD proprietary driver have full support of opengl extensions. Whether you’re talking about AMD or Nvidia, though, neither firm seems to taken too long.
Added OpenGL support for:Graphics control panel setting for CMAA* (Conservative Morphological Anti-Aliasing) now works on OpenGL applications AMD’s preview driver also supports OpenGL 3.3 on cards as far back as the old Radeon HD 2000 series.Graphics control panel setting to force Anisotropic Filtering now works correctly on all DirectX9, DirectX10 and DirectX11 based applications.Reduced total file size of the driver on system storage.Improved video playback experience with enhanced Frame Rate Conversion based on global motion vectors.Intel has published few days ago a new graphics driver ( v10.) for its GPUs (4th Generation Intel Core Processors with Intel HD graphics, Intel Iris™graphics and Intel Iris Pro graphics and Intel Core M with Intel HD Graphics 5300).

im no expert but in my opinion something like this should do:
16GB ram (at least DDR4, DDR5 is cool but not necessary)
for the graphics card probably the minimum viable one is somewhere along the lines of a GTX 1060. If you don't need to do any video editing, 3d modelling or game development you can get a cheaper one or rely on a CPU with integrated graphics
intel i5 12600KF / intel i7 12700KF gets you a decent CPU that doesnt eat your savings your entire family and your soul. This is probably the most important part of your computer so make sure you pick a decent one
you can get an SSD for pretty cheap these days so if at all possible 1TB of storage is incredibly nice, but 500GB really should be more than enough unless you need to store a lot of video/image files. Do not get a HDD.
motherboards are also cheap, personally I would go with an Asrock B450M Steel Legend. BUT! make sure your CPU and GPU are compatible with the motherboard!!
If you have all your components dont forget to figure out how much power they all consume together and slap a PSU in there with enough wattage to sustain the whole thing
thats if you go for a PC, laptop idk
Hi hi, I have a very noob you're-probably-asked-this-all-the-time question. What is the most basic computer a regular student person can/ should have right now? I'm curious because computers are not cheap and since I needed one for college I'm using a really old borrowed refurbished pc that runs on i3 processor and windows 7.
im really not the best person to ask this, but i probably have followers who can help u so im posting this anyways :3
#you can probably replace a bunch of these suggestions with cheaper components as well#i just quickly threw this list together i dont actually have anything to back up these claims

X plane world traffic
The new graphics setup only has few controls, but I think with more controls I could get better frame rates while still having the details Id like to see.ĪMD GPUs have historically had really bad OpenGL support, so frame rates have been poor. I dont have to tell you what happens when fog rolls in, clouds or rain come up: Fps drop to 12 or worse.īefore buying the Radeon I had Intel onboard graphics (Intel(R) HD Graphics 4600) which had about the same frame rates. What if AI traffic would follow some real flight plans, picked from a library of flight plans The AI would be required to pick a flight plan that starts or ends at an airport nearby, and the flight plan has to match the plane being used and the weather (not to start or land with the wind).īut my main concern is: Its very hard to get a decent frame rate without having a (climate) killer GPU: With a Radeon RX 560 I only get about 26 fps with a clear sky. Usually they circle around, going up and down (not touch-and-go, just changing altitude). So some dust clouds, and finally it was airborn AI traffic isnt very sophisticated: When you watch an AI pilots flight, ATC sends resume own navigation as soon as the plae is somewhat away from the airport, and the AI pilot dont seem to have a plan where to go. Once Ive seen an autogen Kingair or a Baron (hard to say from the distance) that was up to take off, but it hit the end of the runway without doing so. Should I delete my preferences folder I played last night on 1.34 and was 55-60 FPS.Īt my community, Bora Simular (facebook group) lots of people report it. So they updated the Steam Beta to the release for those who dont want to wait.Ĭheck the Bug Fix and tell me if you see something realted to the contrail problem. Please try the updater again later or contact Laminar research tech support etc The technical problem was: no such file or directory. Youll most likely see her answering bug reports or making video tutorials. In order for the lines to merge when they cross. My lines, like the default lines, use two layers X-Plane) and I really would hate to lose it to WT3's ATC (which may be brilliant as far as I know - I haven't tried it).X-Plane World Traffic Impact On Fps By candpackvaspa1974 Follow | Public I also hope that others who use PF3 would also appreciate it working as fully as possible in XP11 and its addons, 'cos if I am about the only one here who has switched to XP11 (surely not!) then things don't look too good for me! PF3 is like an old friend in a new environment (i.e. If there is currently a way to fix this latter issue that I am unaware of, I'd be grateful to know what it is. For instance, WT3 and PF3 do not 'speak to each other', so that PF3 clears me onto occupied runways, or AI traffic from WT3 lands and takes off oblivious to the fact that my aircraft is on the runway. WT3 does have its own ATC element, but since I am very keen to stick with PF3 (the loss of FDC when I moved to XP was enough!) I am hoping that some things are being worked on. Well, I would like to ask what steps (I understand there are some?) are being taken to integrate PF3 with World Traffic 3 (AI traffic programme in X-Plane). With the installation of the (third-party) PFEtoXplane plugin, many things in PF3 work just as they did in FS9 (although updating the PF3 database for XP is still not possible via PF3). I am sure that Dave M must share my views on X-Plane (at least I hope he does, to some extent at least!) and be looking for ways to further allow PF3 to work with that programme. The one programme that I very much want to keep from MSFS though is PF3 - another developing bit of software. I have flown nothing else for almost a year now and feel I have hardly scratched the surface of its possibilities. I don't think I can be the only one who, although very grateful for the years of pleasure I got from FS9 (and to a far lesser extent, FSX!), has realised that even FSX is now old technology and that the ever-developing X-Plane (now v.11.21) brings levels of sophistication undreamed of in the Microsoft sim.

Included default preset is not configured, download customized from other sites like Nexus or from the forum. We host 351,922 files for 1,563 games from 141,689 authors serving 30,903,439 members with over 3.5bn downloads to date. Enboost not working - posted in New Vegas Mod Troubleshooting: ok so first id like to mention im playing on a laptop that has integrated gpu AND an nvidia 850m and im also using the injector version (or trying to anyway) so basically i followed every step in every guide i could find without success every single time i run the game PEROID (nvse, falloutnv.exe, through MO, etc) i dont get the. Some versions are just patches without any changes to graphics, but in config files you may toggle patches too. This includes Steam overlay, EVGA, Afterburner, Avast antivirus, EMET, D3D Overrider, Razer and Logitek utils. Many software types have compatibility issues with the mod because they hook in to game process or graphics, so make sure you do not run anything like that. Almost all screenshots and videos are made with ENBSeries. Skyrim players right after game release also agressively reacted regarding ENBSeries and believed in artistic atmosphere of vanilla game as the only one good. ENBOOST NEXUS MODS MODS
But still require lot of work for polishing various aspects, as some of you know i ignored GTA 5 modding, because users where satisfied with visuals, but they are unable to make photorealistic look by using only modding tools and tweaking weather properties. We host 353,671 files for 1,579 games from 142,310 authors serving 31,066,205 members with 0 downloads to date. PROTEUS at Skyrim Special Edition Nexus - Mods and Community () PROTEUS will redefine how you play Skyrim. Most lights do not cast shadows and placed improperly just to lit scene, so level of realism is greatly reduced and only modders can fix that.įallout 4 seems don't need much changes like i did for Skyrim and not looks that bad.
ENBOOST NEXUS MODS PATCH
It's just a patch without any changes to graphics. Graphics looks poor by quality of other 2015 games, very similar to Skyrim, with flat non shadowed areas after certain distance. This is adaptation of code i did for TES Skyrim to reduce memory usage of the game and to fix most CTDs (crashes to desktop) because of 'out of memory' issue when many mods installed. Before game release most players mentioned cartoonish look of the game and bad texturing not fit to post apocaliptic game where everything must be broken.

As a linux person I love sharing my opinions, so to answer your questions in order:
1. the best beginner distro depends on what OS your coming from and how tech savvy you are. Since your coming off of windows and you seem like a beginner when it comes to linux, I would say mintos would work just fine for you.
2. Linux isnt a super large community in the desktop computer space, so viruses are a lot rarer than for windows desktop machines, so by virtue of that you are automatically safer than a windows user. You can still get viruses, but honestly you would have to go looking to get one, and even when browsing all my favorite sketchy sites, I have yet to be infected by one, but an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure as they say. Just dont download things from unnofficial channels if your worried.
3. Prebuilt computers from vendors like system76 come preinstalled with either a vendor specific distro like Pop_os from system76, or youll get the option to pick between a few like fedora, debian, ubuntu, mint, etc. The setup process for any of these distros in the modern day is fairly trivial and honestly less hassle than setting up windows at this point.
4. Sorry to hear about your old computer, but system76 isnt the only possible sourse for linux computers. There are a multitude of vendors, such as tuxedo computers, framework, and star labs. Although only system76 offers desktops of those 4 that I mentioned. Dell, HP, and Lenovo all also offer desktop workstations preloaded with ubuntu, though they are expensive and a hassle to find on their websites.
5. Since you seem to have a preference for system76, I would say the best option from them in your price range is the Thelio Spark Empowered, which clocks in at about 1100 dollars. It comes with pretty good specs, though it only has an integrated GPU instead of a dedicated graphics card, but any computer with a dgpu at this price point nowadays is gonna be either used or something from one of the big 3 (Dell, HP, Lenovo)
hey im planning to switch over to linux and need advice from the smart people of tumblr, please and thank you. my messages are open so if you need any info to help me out hmu.
General Questions:
im seeing everyone saying ubuntu, mint, and ziron are "the #1 go to versions for beginners" but like... which is it?
i also hear about security being the best with linux but nothing about it coming with antiviruses. does it come with one like how windows comes with defender or do you install that yourself, or is it something different entirely?
all the sources i look at talk about downloading and installing linux but i want to know what to expect when first getting a prebuilt pc with the OS, like the system 76 pcs. do you have to set it up like when you install it or is it as easy as getting any new computer?
i know nothing about coding and im planning to get a computer from system 76 since it seems like the best, and its by far the only source that only comes with linux, and since my current one was pretty much ruined by someone i thought could fix it after a faulty outlet fried its insides, he didnt and made it worse.
so yeah, which linux version do you suggest for a computer moron, any suggestions for computers would be nice (max price is $1,300), i'll put the specs and my uses under the read more.
Preferences:
It ONLY comes with Linux. I despise what Windows has become and don't want to even bother dual booting cause I feel with the switchovers happening they're gonna get salty and make something that'll turn your computer into a bomb if you use Linux with it.
Kinda beefy but not a supercomputer. I don't use AI stuff, I'm not a programmer, but I do frequently play modded Minecraft with my friends and run smps for my Discord servers. I recently switched to Modrinth cause ATLauncher had been giving me trouble. Curseforge is out of the question.
At the most, I'll be playing VRChat with friends while having Spotify or Youtube in the background for music and Discord open in case someone needs my help in one of my servers, similar goes for running one of my SMPs just minus the VR.
Gaming Questions:
I also play VR games often, especially BeatSaber (modded ofc im not insane), and I have Half Life Alyx that I haven't been able to finish cause my already dead and gutted PC struggles to run it anymore even with the lowest settings. My current headset is a two feet in the grave, barely hanging in there, held by tape Oculus Rift S thats as old as my current PC whos also dead. I plan to get a new headset soon and had the Quest 2 recommended to me by friends. If theres better alternatives that isn't Meta please let me know.
I'm a DBD addict. Does it really run DBD or was that just the one guy from the one video I saw.
My friends also often drag me onto Roblox so I need to know if that'll be an option for Linux too.
I know I could probably look up all this myself but every source is outdated from years ago or they all say different things and it just confuses me.
Art Questions:
My current tablet is a Wacom, I got it before knowing how greedy the company actually is, and I plan to switch to a Huion after this tablet dies on me. If compatibility is an issue with it please let me know what to do about that.
I usually use Medibang but I don't think it runs on Linux from what I've seen, if I'm wrong lemme know. Am I going to have to switch all the files over to something else before getting a Linux or are there programs I can use that'll load them?
I also write and need to know if I need to switch all my files to something else before porting it all over to the Linux PC. I just used the default notepad and document programs on Windows.
But yeah, that's all my questions for now. If I think of any more I'll just edit this post. Sorry if I sound super dumb for all this, I tried finding information sources myself but like I said all of them weren't too moron friendly or had relevant information. Most sources I found were articles or reddit forums from years ago so I thought "Hey, why don't I just go ask the computer nerds directly?" so here I am.

Bioshock 2 steam crash
#Bioshock 2 steam crash serial number
Which card (gpu) you tried to use with it? This error, in my opinion, related to open gl, shows that your rig does not meet the req. Make sure you visit the official website. You might be not using an updated version of the game. Tomb Raider loads its launcher, but its the same issue when I try to run the actual game - starts to load and then. All of them start to run and then immediately stop and disappear from memory. Tomb Raider (2013) Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Have anyone here tried running the Linux version from Steam on Arch yet, with success? The developers of BioShock 2 constantly release updates to bugs. For whatever reason, some of my old Steam games refuse to run.

This same code acts as both the Serial Number for SecuROM activation, and the product key for Games for Windows Live activation. When launching Bioshock 2 for the first time, Steam will supply a small gray pop-up window with a code. When I try to sign in to WLive either the whole machine hangs up or Bioshock 2 crashes. The Steam version of Bioshock 2 requires a 2-part activation process. The game loads and plays if I dont sign in to Windows live. But i also found that another guy trying to use his ATI-card has similar problems: Bioshock 2 downloaded and installed from Gamefly through Steam. bioshockwindows10gamesSubscribe My Channel For More Awesome Videos, And Don't Forget To Click Button And Tap Bell Icon After Subscribe.Follow us on Faceb. Since Intel integrated graphics aren't supported, i figured that was the reason for the crash, and that this was purely related to me not getting it to work with bumblebee. Same message, referecing the Intel driver. I have tried setting the game launch-options to "primusrun %command%", since that is normally sufficient, but no go. The things that stands out to me here is the parts referencing the Intel Open Source driver, since i'm trying to run this with "primusrun" to get it to work with bumblebee. Random crashes: -Open steam -Right click on Bioshock 2 -Properties -Set Launch Options -Paste '-dx9' without the quotation marks Game wont look as fancy but hey, it works. Seems that there is some trouble though, since it crashes upon launch with a curious error log: Navigate to your My Documents folder and delete the BioShock 2 folder This wipes your saves so just be weary. I bought it immidiately and installed it. I was thrilled the other day when the Bioshock page on Facebook announced that they have released a Linux-version of the game.

i dont have any experience with modern gpus, hell ive only ever used integrated graphics, but honestly i dont see why people like ai frames. with dlss 4 coming out with the 50 series, gpus are gonna be around half ai frames and half real frames iirc, like i dont wanna look at visual slop, id rather have 120 real frames (or 60, i wouldnt even complain) at 1440p or 4k for higher end gpus than 200 real frames and 150 fake frames
I genuinely hate the way modern gaming graphics tech is going. No don't optimise your game so it actually runs well, just make everyone who wants to play it at more than 30 fps run it at 720p with "ai upscaling" that is incredibly blurry and noisy and also use "ai frame interpolation" that puts 300 ugly blurry fake frames in between the 30 real frames.
If i wanted to play all my games as a blurry mess I'd take my fucking glasses off and use a monitor from 2002. I didn't pay for a 1440p monitor to only view 720p gameplay thats been shittily upscaled to 1440, I paid for it to play my games in fucking 1440p.
Not to mention the fact that it means anyone who owns anything older than an RTX 20 series basically just cant play these newer games anymore cause they don't have ai upscalers and frame interpolation
I'm strictly in the camp that a well done rasterised game running native at 1440p will always look better than a ray traced game that will only run at double digit frame rates when you upscale from lower res and have ""AI"" guess what the inbetween frames look like

Grin and Beam: A Tale of Two Coins Being Built on Mimblewimble
Mimblewimble is about to go live – not in one, but in two distinct implementations.
On Dec. 25, and Jan. 15, respectively, two different networks – dubbed Beam and Grin – are expected to launch, each offering slightly different custom builds of the privacy-oriented protocol.
“So far, privacy has always been introduced at the detriment of scalability. We’re changing that,” the pseudonymous Grin developer, known as “Ignotus Peverell”, told CoinDesk.
First proposed in 2016 by an anonymous cryptographer called “Tom Elvis Jedusor” – loosely named after the Harry Potter book series’ arch-villain, Voldemort – the tech was designed to solve privacy and scalability on the world’s largest blockchain, bitcoin.
The first implementation of the tech, Grin, began being coded in late 2016. In March 2018, it was joined by Beam, an Israel-based startup that’s offering a slightly different interpretation of the technology.
An atmosphere of friendly competition between the two has taken shape since Beam’s announcement – though it’s occasionally tipped into outright resentment from each side.
Whereas Grin followed a highly principled, cypherpunk ideology – including no token premine or ICO, as well as volunteer-based development – Beam sought VC funding and hired a team of developers to work on the software full-time, allowing it to speed ahead of Grin in its implementation.
Subtle differences in the design choices hint that while Grin maintains an emphasis on community-driven decentralization, Beam stands out for its sharper business sense.
Still, developers are urging on each side that due to their differences, and the two implementations will continue to co-exist – and even complement one another other. And both expressed a will to overcome the community tribalism that exists in the industry.
Guy Corem, an advisor to Beam and the former CEO of Israeli-based bitcoin mining firm Spondoolies-Tech, told CoinDesk:
“We share a common goal which is to implement Mimblewimble in the most robust way possible.”
Harry Potter tech
What the designs have in common is their basis in the privacy-oriented protocol, Mimblewimble.
Stepping back, Mimblewimble was named after the Harry-Potter tongue-tying curse due to its ability to fuse transactions together such that they become indecipherable.
“It’s a privacy-centric chain in a new format without any of the baggage weighing down previous coins,” summarized Grin developer Yeastplume.
Yet while they’re alike in this respect, there’s a host of differences between Grin and Beam as well.
History
Grin, which prides itself on its large community, has been under active development since 2016.
According to the open-source code repository Github, its primary core developers are Antioch Peverell, Gary Yu, hashmap, Ignotus Peverell, Quentin Le Sceller, and Yeastplume.
It stemmed from a community that formed organically around the tech following the announcement of Mimblewimble throughout 2016, and became closely associated with the underlying technology.
Beam, on the other hand, came later into the industry, entering the space in March 2018.
Speaking to CoinDesk, CTO Alex Romanov said that while Mimblewimble seemed to be the best choice for a privacy-centric protocol at the time, the Grin development team was moving slowly.
“Grin is structured as a research project. They do not receive any outside funding except for donations, they do it part-time, they’re doing it very slowly,” Romanov said.
When it formed, Beam was treated with caution from the Grin community. And that’s in part because, on its early days, Beam was not open-source, leading suspicion to build surrounding the project.
“No one knew what we were doing and when there is something that is hidden there is speculation going on,” Romanov said.
Nowadays, though, Beam’s code is public, and the two projects are feeding back on each other as well. For example, Beam even partially funded Grin’s security audit.
“Our projects take different approaches, but we’re collaborating and exchanging ideas daily. [Mimblewimble] tech can only get stronger as a result,” Grin developer “Yeastplume” tweeted in late October.
Governance
One of the most significant differences between the two cryptocurrencies is their different approaches to governance.
For example, Beam takes its example from privacy-centric cryptocurrency zcash, maintaining a corporate structure, and funneling a portion of the block reward into a Foundation to support the blockchain’s development.
“Beam is a professional effort to create a privacy coin, there is an alignment of incentives within the block rewards so that the project won’t die,” Romanov said.
In this regard, Grin takes a different approach, relying on a community funding model that is similar to the one utilized by the monero project.
And while it’s a less reliable income source, Grin sees this as an advantage that ultimately increases the security of the project.
“The project has a firm commitment to not engage in any ICO, pre-mine, founder’s rewards, or similar activities,” Yeastplume wrote in a statement, adding:
“We are not driven by profit or corporate interests. We’re open-source and community-driven by design.”
Audience
Beam has a heavy emphasis on usability, having built a simple wallet interface that is considered central to the project’s overall value-add.
“Having a GUI wallet and mobile wallet will increase adoption, increase number of transactions and usage and will thus increase the anonymity set,” Corem told CoinDesk.
In addition to being designed from a user-friendly perspective, the wallet boasts implementations in different operating systems, including MacOS, Windows, and Linux. Beam will also release a light client alongside its mainnet release, Coreum said.
Grin, however, currently only offers a command-line wallet, and is less accessible for non-technical users.
“We’ll have a fairly well-tested MimbleWimble chain and a relatively stable and tested command-line wallet out, with all sorts of features in varying states of development to assist the community in creating unique transaction exchange solutions and other crucial infrastructure,” Yeastplume told CoinDesk:
“It’s still very much aimed at a technical crowd, and will be very much ‘use at your own risk’, especially in the early days.”
Design
Additionally, Beam is coded in C++, whereas Grin relies on a more contemporary coding language named Rust.
And while there are slight architectural differences, perhaps the most notable difference between the two cryptocurrencies are their economic models. In particular, Beam sees itself as a “store of value” coin that has a fixed issuance schedule akin to bitcoin.
“We wanted to create a confidential store of value coin, the emission to be limited,” Romanov told CoinDesk.
By contrast, Grin’s monetary policy is unfixed. Currently, a new token is issued every second, though this will decrease periodically every ten years. This is due to the project’s belief that sustained issuance will stabilize the value of the currency.
“We want Grin to be a currency, not a ‘store of value’ (whatever that actually means in the ridiculously volatile crypto space),” Yeastplume said. “We want to encourage use, and we don’t want to unfairly reward early adopters with an arbitrary deflationary halving schedule.”
Mining
The projects also have slightly different attitudes to mining, or the process by which new transactions are added to the blockchain.
Each project deploys a slightly modified version of Equihash, and both have committed to changes in order to manage highly-optimized, application specific integrated chips, or ASICs.
Within the next two years, Grin intends to do regular software changes to block the use of ASICs. After this, it will swap to a more ASIC-friendly proof-of-work algorithm, with the belief that after two years, ASIC hardware will have become more affordable.
Beam has announced a similar strategy. However, it only intends to keep the ASICs at bay for a 12 month period, giving the GPU miners a “head start,” Corem said.
Going forward
For both cryptocurrencies, the launch of their mainnets represents only the first step.
“The long term vision is to be the best digital money there is, and with some more work I know we can get there,” Ignotus Peverell told CoinDesk.
Both cryptocurrency projects have plans to implement new and experimental features. For example, Beam cited its plans to integrate with BOLT, the privacy-centric lightning implementation, as well as adding atomic swaps and other features.
Yeastplume echoed this, telling CoinDesk:
“Launch is just another milestone in Grin’s lifecycle, and a relatively early one at that.”
Yeastplume cited “tentative plans for enhancements,” while Peverell said that “we have tons of improvements in usability, scalability and privacy in mind.”
For example, concerns that both implementations may potentially be vulnerable to machine-learning analysis – due to the design’s failure to conceal inputs and outputs – are also under discussion.
While both teams currently implement a privacy feature named Dandelion to better conceal these potential leaks, there may be other experimental efforts that can be concluded as well going forward.
To support such changes, both cryptocurrencies will undergo regular system-wide software upgrades, or hard forks, in their early days.
Peverell said that he hopes to see Mimblewimble implemented as trustless, privacy-centric sidechain for other cryptocurrencies, adding:
“Mimblewimble is putting the pressure on other cryptocurrencies to adapt and find the right tradeoffs, creating a net positive to the ecosystem.”
The headline of this article has been updated for clarity.
