Letter from our CEO

I would like to begin by saying thank you to the many people who have written in via email, through our DMs, or on social media expressing their support, understanding, and compassion as KnitCrate navigates this situation. Whenever we receive one of those messages, we share it internally with the rest of the team, and it helps boost morale and remind us why we enjoy being a part of this community. So again, THANK YOU.

The situation over the past year has been, well…to say it has been messy would be an understatement. The lack of inventory being in stock (particularly in the last 3 months), delayed shipments, and customers understandably being more budget-conscious with the uncertainties of the pandemic have all strongly impacted our sales as a company. We have been doing whatever we can to overcome it. One of the biggest challenges we’ve dealt with as a company during COVID-19 has been our supply chain, both with getting the yarn to our warehouse for kit assembly and for production of the yarn in the first place.

Issue 1: Logistics of receiving the yarn

There are two main problems affecting companies who rely on importing/exporting goods these days.

The first is that, due to COVID, there are less commercial flights. Almost all commercial flights carry the passengers up top and cargo down below. With less commercial flights, there is less opportunity to transport cargo. This causes a backlog of cargo sitting at the airports. For example, we paid our mill in mid-March to try to get what should have been the April yarn now in March (paying it a month ahead of what was planned in our budget), at which point they sent the cargo to the airport in Lima. The cargo sat there for over a week because of the backlog of other cargo waiting to be put on a plane. The airline finally delivered 3 pallets to the US on March 30th. The remaining 9 pallets arrived today on March 31st. Customs wouldn’t let us pick up the first 3 pallets until the other 9 arrived, because they wanted us to pick up the order in its entirety. We finally got clearance to pick it up earlier today.

The second issue companies are facing are capacity constraints at the ports, whether airports or ocean. All ports worldwide are working with far less employees than they were before the pandemic, which causes massive delays in being able to process shipments. This affects us with our large inbound orders but also with shipments to our international customers, as packages sometimes sit at customs in your countries for what may seem to be an eternity.

Issue 2: Production of yarn at the mills

Because of the volume of yarn we are now ordering monthly, we have to contract with our mills 12+ months in advance. For example, as of today, all yarn orders through March 2022 are already contracted. Why the long 12-month lead time? The mills need this amount of lead time to plan their own raw materials purchases and production schedules, not just for our orders, but the orders of all their clients. Every month, we pay our mill at the time of shipment, they proceed to ship the yarn to us. Under normal circumstances, it takes a shipment by air only 1-3 business days to arrive, clear customs, and be delivered to our warehouse. Outside of a worldwide pandemic, this is not usually an issue. The mills have plenty of time to produce yarn and deliver it the first week of each month when we need to assemble your kits and ship to you.

However, the COVID pandemic has complicated things. Both of our main mills in Peru and Italy have had periods of time where they outright closed due to government restrictions on non-essential businesses to help combat the spread of COVID in their respective countries. For example, in April/May of 2020, our Peruvian mill was closed for two months and that left us without yarn to send out in May. Due to the lead times required and the fact that most mills worldwide were (and still are) facing similar issues, looking for alternate yarn was nearly impossible. Thankfully, our team was quick on their feet and we put together a fun dye-it-yourself project using undyed yarn from our Dyer Supplier business.

During this first quarter of 2021, our Italian mill, who was originally supplying yarn from December through February, has been facing stringent lockdowns and closures in response to the recent increase in COVID cases in Italy. This disrupted their ability to produce yarn and has resulted in part of the January yarn and all of the planned February yarn not being delivered. We were horribly disappointed about this, but despite our best efforts as well as the mill’s, the production needs could not be met. Thankfully, our Peruvian mill has been able to come back online with a more regular schedule in the past few months, and we have been working with them to get yarn delivered now that was originally meant for a later month.

While this is a solution to the inventory needed for crate shipment, it presented the company with a new problem. We had to fund the purchase for this yarn outside of our budget and available funding, which has been difficult during a challenging and financially straining year. This is why we have been forced to issue a credit, as opposed to an outright refund, on those purchases. It would be impossible for the company to do both - issue a refund for all those orders at one time while allocating funds to pay for yarn ahead of time.

Does this situation absolutely suck? Yes. It absolutely sucks. Am I sorry that this is happening? Of course. Business owners who give a damn about their business, customers, and employees do not set out on a mission to disappoint customers or give a less-than-exceptional experience. It is more heartbreaking to me than I can explain. But we aren’t dealing with normal times. We are doing what we need to do to get the company through this temporary situation to keep delivering yarn each month, keep our team members employed, and continue to be the business so many of you have grown to love.

Unfortunately, this also means streamlining how we offer products to you as well as increasing prices. When we took over KnitCrate in mid-2016, the kits ranged in price between $45 to $65 USD. We lowered those prices significantly to $24.99, including shipping & handling, that same year. We have kept prices there since then, even though shipping costs and wool prices have skyrocketed over the past 4-5 year period. Keeping our prices that low could not continue indefinitely. We had plans to introduce these price increases later in the year, but this situation has forced us to accelerate those changes. However, even at the new prices, we still feel there is superb value for the yarn you are receiving. Moreover, you still have access to the member discounts in the shop which gives you even more value.

I am hoping that most customers know us well enough to understand that we aren’t trying to pull a fast one or go Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde on you. We would never turn into a completely different company who is out to take advantage of you. However, we recognize that these sudden changes and issues have understandably raised concerns. Among them, there have been concerns raised about the products and website that we would like to clarify:

Our Terms and Conditions have not changed since 2019 and our Privacy Policy hasn’t changed since 2017.

We will continue to include 2 skeins per crate for the traditional membership and 1 for the sock membership. The “1+ skeins” wording previously seen on the website was updated back in 2019 when we tested featuring 1 skein of ultra-luxury base in the months we featured Citrus Squeeze and Titmouse. We subsequently sent a survey to our customers asking how they would like us to approach this in the future. The answer was that the majority preferred two skeins, and so we have featured at least two skeins ever since and will continue to do so.

We had seen some comments regarding extras no longer being included in kits. Please rest assured that extras will continue being a part of your kits.

Member Central discounts, Double Down discounts, etc. will continue. These are some of the key benefits of being a member and will continue to be so.

I have come across some hard-to-read comments about how KnitCrate is going out of business or won’t be around in 2 months. Are we going through a tough situation? Yes. That is no secret. Are we disappearing in 2 months? No. Like I said above, the yarn is contracted out through March 2022 with our Peruvian mill. This mill has already come back online and is working with us to push every month contract up by 30 days. We are working overtime and making the necessary changes to get things back on track and get the shipping schedule normalized again.

Ultimately, whether KnitCrate, or any company for that matter, stays in business or not is always in the hands of the customers. Companies can die for many reasons, but there are two overarching reasons.

The company cannot deliver a product the customer wants. The company created a product the customer wants and is willing to pay for, but the company cannot access or deliver it to the customer.

The company cannot get customers. The company developed a product a customer doesn’t care for and isn’t willing to pay for and they go out of business.

As a company, we have predominantly been battling Reason #1 during the pandemic and are actively working on solutions within our team and with our partner mills to address the supply chain issues. Given that our Peruvian mill was able to finish the April yarn by mid-March and ship to us early, we are looking forward to working with them on the future orders already contracted as we bump up each of those months. Going forward, we will not be pre-selling yarn on the shop. Yarn will only be listed for sale once it has been received into our warehouse, quality controlled, and counted. We understand that this may upset some customers who liked the ability to reserve the yarn by pre-buying it, but it is a necessary action.

That leaves us with Reason #2, and this is entirely in your hands as a customer. We offer great products, great value, and fair prices not available in most places. In fact, I encourage anyone who has been a member with us for a long time to look at the yarn they have purchased through us over their lifetime as a customer, either through the kits or in Member Central, and tally up the savings they have earned. I don’t know many other places that can enable you to save on quality yarn as much as KnitCrate.

When it comes to business, the customer is always in charge. You vote with your dollars whether any company you buy from, including KnitCrate, stays in business or not. This is not new, though. This has always been the case, ever since we took over the company in 2016, and will always be the case. We have had to make some tough decisions during a temporarily very sh!tty situation. We made those decisions in order to stay alive and keep delivering yarn to you at affordable prices long into the future. If you will have us, we will be here working to bring you yarn with great projects at great prices.

It’s that time of year again! I, and possibly a good number of you reading this, just spent the whole of 2018 in the Gorillaz fandom. Congratulations! You made it! Because this year...kinda sucked. Not just for the Gorillaz fandom but, if this Washington Post article is any indication, for the rest of the world too. Maybe on an individual level there were moments of light. Maybe Gorillaz was your moment of light. If it was I’m genuinely happy because that means you probably found a way to avoid or ignore all the chaos that went down this year. But overall? Fandom was rife with disappointments, confusion and conflict with some good parts (for me, at least) sprinkled in here and there. Below is a personal reflection on the top 10 significant events in fandom of 2018.

1. Murdoc Goes to Prison

2018 started out peacefully for fandom. We were just finishing up sharing our scans of G-Magazine and theorizing over the next album when we’re treated with this - a nineteen second mocap of a frantic Murdoc accepting a Brit Award with an “oh by the way I’m going to prison.” We didn’t know why or for how long, and, though fans were confused and Murdoc going to prison is a tired, overplayed storyline at this point, it was cherished as any new Gorillaz content, especially animation, is cherished. Memes were made, most notably the #FreeMurdoc hashtag complete with a petition which was acknowledged by creators and caused the first big outburst in fandom for its messy tag. I did what I always do with Murdoc videos and went through the entire thing frame by frame to collect screenshots. Little did I know that this would be the only time I would get to indulge in this beloved past time. Little did I know that I would be wearing the same expression as Murdoc is in this screencap this entire phase.

2. Murdoc hate

Murdoc hate has always existed. It’s also generally accepted. However, when it was confirmed that Murdoc was going to be in prison for an undetermined amount of time and that he may not even speak this phase (thanks a lot, phase 5 plot!) it reached unprecedented levels of viciousness. Some fans took every opportunity to drag him in the main tag, start debates with anyone who might mention one positive thing about him and expressed how they genuinely wanted him to die and/or never come back. It kinda reminded me of this season of MTV’s The Challenge when everyone ganged up on Johnny Bananas. Like, yes he’s an asshole and yes this was probably long overdue but also omg when is there and end point? Is there an end point? It was like some people hated Murdoc more than they liked Gorillaz. For some additional context - this tense environment was born out of an astoundingly severe conflict that happened in spring where three separate fandom storms that had been brewing since late 2017 collided into one huge mess. Discords were raided, friendships were lost, the police were called (I’m not even exaggerating). I won’t go into it more but if you were there, you know what i’m talking about. Murdoc wasn’t the cause of this, but his character was at the center of one of those storms and the canon sending him to prison only reignited the ire towards him. For awhile Murdoc fans weren’t sure were exactly they stood with the greater fandom, and new fans were confused as to why this one green character was the source of so much grief for haters and fans alike. This continued for most of the year (and still continues today), hence why it’s getting a mention now.

3. Ace

Believe it or not Murdoc and Ace are confirmed #friends. You wouldn’t know that from all the Murdoc vs Ace content that sprung out of this year but Ace was the one who joined Murdoc for hot chocolate after he got out of prison, “they go way back” etc etc. Ace was a big deal because it was probably the only time the fandom guessed something correctly this entire year. Jamie began posting cryptic pictures of Noodle with this unidentified man, then another with only the Ace card visible. “It a Powerpuff Girls crossover!” Some people claimed. But that seemed so random? Really? A B-list cartoon villain from a cartoon targeting an entirely different demographic? More likely than you think! Ace never spoke a word and he wasn’t allowed to smoke or have sex. People obsessed over him anyways. To this day I still have no idea who he is or what kind of personality he has or really anything. But he wasn’t a bad guy (more on that later) and he was Murdoc’s friend so he’s alright with me.

4. Messaging Denholm

By now the fandom was fraught with distress on so many levels. We were lost. We needed someone to guide us, to show us the way, to show us the #truth. I don’t know exactly who started this trend but it soon spread around Reddit and other social media sites that Jamie’s son Denholm was replying to dm’s on Instagram and soon, he was graced with a deluge of of inquiries from casual fans and Murdoc stans alike. The thing is though - he actually *did* answer them. Many of us had spoilers re: Murdoc and Ace’s friendship, Murdoc getting out of prison, etc. MONTHS before they happened. I believe he even told us that 2D was fine back in like, June or something. Denholm knew! Eventually we pissed him off but it didn’t stop him from answering. He just answered angrier. It also caused fans to argue more because people started accusing others of photoshopping his responses and nothing can ever be done peacefully here. I haven’t followed up on this story singe the end of summer but I think fans have finally scaled back on the messaging. But I hear he’s working on a Gorillaz documentary for 2019 so...I’m sure we’ll be talking again soon.

5. Noodle

I want to take a moment here to also acknowledge the struggle AMA Gorillaz hosted on, of all places, Youtube. Thankfully, diligent redditors compiled a google doc of all the answers otherwise they would lost thanks to Youtube’s confusing interface. ANYHOW. The answer that stirred up the biggest milieu of debate and confusion came from Noodle. This isn’t exactly my lane - I don’t wade into Noodle issues and I don’t id as part of the LGBT community - so I’m not going to say much here other than, at the very least, this was the second or third time she has officially denied any interest in dating her bandmates.

6. 2D’s journal/2Doc

Okay first of all: 2DOC...jk, jk...jk? But no, honestly, this actually did become a big story this year, much bigger than expected. The release of 2D’s journal was the catalyst here, revealing a number of drawings and images of Murdoc. “Souk Eye,” a song that came with visuals featuring close ups of Murdoc’s face and vaguely romantic lyrics was depicted in 2D’s journal next to yet another drawing of Murdoc. We were confused! 2D didn’t care that Murdoc was gone, right? 2Doc shippers were intrigued. I was hesitant. We were all called delusional. However, “Souk Eye” was later confirmed to be a love song by Damon Albarn, and Murdoc and 2D have both claimed their relationship is “better” since the end of phase 5 (hhMmMmM). Obvi, take this with a grain of salt because it’s Gorillaz but the journal was instrumental in confirming how closely The Now Now (and the entire plot of phase 5, really) was tied to Murdoc and 2D’s relationship, particularly what 2D thinks of Murdoc. Think of it as platonic if you want but they share a closeness on SOME level and the content of 2018, from interviews to the Murdoc chats to the album itself, supports this. I rest my case.

7. Lost theories

Pour one out for all the lost theories. If you were a new fan this year you probably came up with a theory, or you got really invested in a theory. Some examples: HIM from PPG orchestrating the destruction of Gorillaz by possessing 2D and getting Murdoc framed with Ace as a double agent, or Murdoc’s imprisonment being tied to his trouble with EMI from phase 4, or phase 5 being about time travel, or Murdoc crashing Demon Dayz fest and fighting El Mierda on stage, or 2D being the one to frame Murdoc or Murdoc’s inmate number (24602) being a Les Mis reference implying that he’d get a character arc similar to Jean Valjean...you get the idea. But there are dreams that cannot beeee, and there are storms we cannot weather. You can argue about the budget or G-Shock or whatever but the truth is Gorillaz is just disorganized. This is their Brand™.

8. The Murdoc Chatbot

Gorillaz did an interesting thing this year - it let us talk to Murdoc! Sometime around June, he writers decided that the plot of phase 5 would be best spent, not on exploring the band’s dynamic with Murdoc gone or developing Ace’s personality, but on Murdoc! Fandom spent most of the summer following Murdoc’s experience in prison and helping to “free” him via a chatbot you could access through Kik, Instagram or Facebook. Basically, Murdoc was Paddington from Paddington 2, and we the fans were supposed to be the Browns trying to break him out and prove his innocence. Other fans begrudgingly used the chatbot to make fun of him or tell him to die and follow along with the story (it was the only place you could get plot updates). It was a neat idea as well as a funny experience to pretend to be talking to him, and the plot was very engaging at times. It was the chatbot that revealed the very dissatisfying (albeit happy) conclusion that Murdoc is no Paddington and had lied about everything - being framed, El Mierda etc. - but felt really bad about it. His apology was basically this. I’m going to also tag the #FreeMurdoc merchandise debacle, how overpriced it was and how it ended up being pointless anyways because Murdoc wasn’t framed and didn’t need to be “freed” onto this, because it all falls under the same event. Oh, and you got to talk to Noodle sometimes, too.

9. G-shock ends phase 5

I put “ends phase 5″ in strikethrough because G-Shock on its own is actually pretty cool, and made up for the lack of videos (2 in total) that were released this year. The now Murdoc inclusive band goes to space and starts an alien war! That’s fun! Completely removed from whatever phase 5 was, but fun! (And I say that genuinely) What was messy about G-shock was that it came out of nowhere. The final Murdoc chat, that was SUPPOSED to reveal the ending to the prison arc, hadn’t even happened but suddenly, Murdoc was back to sell watches to aliens with the rest of the band and Ace was gone. But the final chat was delayed by a month and G-Shock came out anyways. Out of this came memes about how phase 5 ended so Gorillaz could try to sell us watches.

10. Cass Browne Tells us the True Plastic Beach Ending

We ended 2018 with not one but two major interviews from the fancast, Hallelujah Monkeyz but I’m choosing to cover their latest interview with Cass Browne, writer of Rise of the Ogre. If you were new this year you probably heard older fans mention ad nauseam how much they missed this guy name Cass. Well, Cass came back and dropped actual bombs about the true ending of phase 3, Murdoc’s lost backstory and the Plastic Beach book he found AND that a sequel to ROTO was planned and dropped. Understandably, this sparked a lot of discussion and also revealed just how important Cass was to the continuity of the Gorillaz storyline. Back then, we had ROTO and Plastic Beach. Today, we have “Murdoc drowns in poop and reunites with the band offscreen”

And that’s the year! And look I’m not saying this because I’m a stan but this was a Murdoc year. He was at the center of like, at least 80% of the angst and joy of fandom and I could make separate “top 10 Murdoc moments” or “top 10 2Doc moments.” I guess for me, on an individual level, it was an alright year. For one, I actually talked to more people this year and met some really great friends (something I don’t typically do in fandom). I also get to check “write a fanfic” off my bucket list (it’s still a WIP but it’s the first WIP I’ve ever had so I’m counting it). And personally, my life has changed and without getting into too many details I’ve overcome a lot, grown professionally and...I think I can be kinda proud of myself for that. I expect 2019 to be a slower year than this one, and, I think the fandom needs that. Hopefully I’ll still see some of you around because I’m going to be here for at least the next few months while I finish up you know what.

Okay, so I wasn’t going to write this post but I decided do so anyways just to clear up an issue.

If you have reblogged the “Hogwarts Houses as the type of people the world gives you” text post from my account, I politely ask you all to remove it. The text is not mine, it’s from @petalya and I cited their writings, only associating it with the hogwarts houses. Even though I have properly credited their writing via permalink in the post back then, they were uncomfortable with their writings being used, thus I promptly removed it. I have also personally wrote an apology letter and resolved matters with the writer. The writer and I are in peaceful terms, they had been kind to forgive me and understood that my actions did not mean any harm in the first place.

It was wrong of me to cite the writer’s work, and for that I am sorry. Unlike what some people think, gaining notes was never on my mind when I used the writer’s text, although I do not treat any of their writing as my property at all. The lines can be blurry with credits on tumblr especially, just as how we quote and use JKR’s writings in making text posts or edits and such. I have seen other bloggers credit writers in the same way thus I didn’t think twice that it would have caused the writer so much trouble. Clearly it was inconsiderate of me to do so and there is no excuse for it. I take full responsibility and I deeply regret it ever having happened at all. I have taken all the necessary measures and I am willing to do whatever it takes to make sure that this type of mistake never happens again.

If, after reading this, you are disappointed in me, or feel uncomfortable and wish to unfollow me, go ahead and do so. I want you to feel comfortable with me/my blog, and I promise there is no hard feelings whatsoever. With this opportunity, I would also like to add that if anyone dislikes the way I run my blog (that I ‘self-reblog too much’, some have said), please, feel free to NOT follow, mute or stay away- do whatever it is- just do not waste precious time in your life getting bitter or sending hate/impolite comments. You are not in any way obligated to follow a blogger and support/like everything they do or post. Your happiness is more important than focusing and commenting on people and things that you don’t like. To those who can understand where I’m coming from, thank you.

Personally, I do not feel that I owe an explanation to anyone as this should have been a matter between me and the writer only, and should anyone deserves an explanation/apology, it would only be petalya, whom has resolved this with me. I would have liked to keep my blog negative drama and hate-free for my mutuals and followers, but because there have been people coming into my inbox/DMs berating me for “not owning up to my mistake” as they seemed to have the misunderstood impression that I am a “celebrity blogger” and questioned me for not publicizing my personal apology to petalya like “celebrities do”, which I am definitely not and have never felt so. Why is there a need to explain myself to other people, when I am just a regular, ordinary blogger like everyone else? Thus I am writing this only for the sake of @petalya and myself, and I kindly ask people to stop sending messages about it to the writer and to me. I only hope for peace in both of our lives as we have put this matter behind us and no longer wish to get hung up on it.

SpaceX Gwynne Shotwell email to employees about Demo-2, George Floyd

SpaceX launched humans into orbit on May 30 for the first time, sending NASA astronauts to the International Space Station.

The company’s milestone coincided with nationwide protests against racism and police brutality that erupted after video circulated showing white Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin placing his knee on the neck of George Floyd, a black man, for nearly nine minutes. Floyd died and Chauvin has been charged with murder.

On Wednesday, SpaceX President and COO Gwynne Shotwell congratulated employees on the launch in an internal email, while also acknowledging the tragedy of racism and police brutality.

“In speaking of trying to attain a better future, we must acknowledge the current reality. The death of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and so many more highlight the difficulties that communities of color face,” she wrote.

“I want to ensure that SpaceX is a place where these difficulties are recognized and certainly a place where bias and discrimination are not tolerated. I will be meeting with our African American employees this week so that we can have more in-depth conversations about their experiences at work and discuss what we can do to improve.”

Her internal memo follows a brief Monday note from SpaceX CEO and founder Elon Musk, which stated: “Your incredible work is now literally part of history! Words cannot express how proud I am of what you have achieved.”

On Twitter, where the SpaceX and Tesla CEO has around 35 million followers, Musk also briefly commented on the Floyd killing, calling for the police officers who stood by and watched to be arrested.

“Definitely not right that the other officers were charged with nothing. What message does this send in general to officers who stand by while another does wrong? #JusticeForGeorge.” (Those officers, Tou Thao, J. Alexander Kueng and Thomas Lane, were charged with aiding and abetting murder late on Wednesday.)

But by the end of June 1, Musk announced he was taking a break from Twitter.

By contrast, SpaceX COO and President Gwynne Shotwell said little on Twitter, where she has a more modest follower count of about 14,000. She reserved her thoughts about police brutality and racism in the US for the internal note.

Last night's #earthquake in #California certainly shook many (literally, sorry too soon for dork humor? it helps me 🤣 but honestly never taking anyone's plight lightly 🙏). 5 Social Media Metrics Musicians Think About All Wrong: via LANDR Blog

Metrics for musicians.

It’s a phrase that’s becoming more and more important these days. And for good reason too. In a recent poll, NME ranked social media (26%) just behind playing live (51%) as the most important channel for musicians looking to get their music heard.

Today you have all sorts of numbers flying at you: likes, shares, listens, plays, streams, royalties and mentions. It can all seem pretty hollow when you’re trying to stay inspired and dedicated to producing your best work.

This week we added the new LANDR Share to Social feature that lets you share your music directly to your social channels from your LANDR account and connect with your fans in many ways.

We added it because sharing your music to your fans is just as important as the creative process that led you to being finished in the first place. So it should all be part of the same workflow—creation to promotion in one simple step.

But it got me thinking, “After I share my music, what now? What metrics actually matter? And who’s really listening?”

To make sure you don’t get blinded by all the noise of social media—and the numbers that come with it, I decided to unpack the 5 most important metrics and find out what they really mean for independent music (hint: it’s not the numbers, it’s what’s behind them that counts).

Understand your metrics, track your following and make the connections that really matter for building a healthy and happy fanbase.

1. Likes

So your music is finally done! You take the plunge and share it to socials. Great, people start liking your track on social media! The thumb is getting sore from thumbing so much!

Likes are great. They’re a perfect starting point for tracking your success…

But the question you need to be asking is WHO liked your track and why?

Use your likes to get to know your audience, start a discussion in the comments about your process, discuss parts you weren’t feeling great about and parts that you were really happy with, link to your influences and inspirations and ask for feedback!

It all helps to build a story around your track and add value to the plays that you’re getting.

Nothing is better than a real honest exchange, digital, or real life. Likes should be a starting point for building a relationship with your fans, not the endgame that you obsess about too much.

Hot Tip: When you’re sharing your releases to social, ask a question in your post. It’s a great way to get your fans involved and encourage discussion around your tracks. It also shows that you care about your following’s opinion.

Explore who’s listening by checking your likes. You might even be surprised at who’s supporting your music. Are they also musicians? Why not listen to their track in exchange and give a like back. Or better yet, drop them a DM and connect. That way you build a relationship of mutual support, and you encourage people to continue following and liking you.

Nothing is better than a real honest exchange, digital, or real life. Likes should be a starting point for building a relationship with your fans, not the endgame that you obsess about too much. Build your likes, but use them once you have them for developing your fanbase.

2. Shares

Sharing is caring. The same goes for your music. If people share it, it means they’re doing more than scrolling through their feed and liking something distractedly or out of obligation.

When something comes from the heart, people see it and want to share it further. When you’re crafting your social post, tell some of your story. Why are you happy to share your release? Was it the product of months of hard work, with the precious help of many collaborators? Include some of that in your post.

Hot Tip: When you make a social post, tag everyone that is credited on your album—the vocalists, each band member, the mixing engineer, producer, the designer of the album art and anyone else involved. It’s a nice way to say thank you, and increase the chances of having them share your release too.

3. Streams

So you just distributed your track. You’re nervously checking your stats every hour in hoping your stream count go up.

Trust me, I’ve been there too. Whatever you do, don’t let it become an obsession! Stressing about stream stats can distract you from understanding the bigger picture.

Of course, if a song is made and you don’t let people know, you’ll miss out on most of your streams. Any release needs a promotional campaign on social media. Post about it on Facebook and Twitter. Make a fun Instagram story about it.

Stats aren’t the end game—they’re a starting point for discovering your audience. Use them to guide your decisions and connect better.

The total number of streams may seem like the only metric that matters but there are other important factors at play on streaming platforms.

Your track’s position in Spotify’s recommendation algorithms isn’t determined by number of plays alone.

Your ratio of plays to user library saves is important, as well as how many followers your artist profile has.

These two lesser known metrics can help evaluate how engaged your audience is with your music. They’re essential to working your way up to Spotify’s editorial playlists.

But think about what those streams tell you about the listeners behind them. Check in a day, a week, a month or even a year to get the full picture of your releases streams. Ask yourself: where do my streams come from, what countries and cities? How can I reach out to those areas? Here are some ideas:

Reach out to a blog from a region where your music is getting streamed to feature your music

Reach out to a local radio station

Write to fellow musicians you admire in those areas

Book an out of town show

Even though music has no boundaries these days, the humans who listen to it live in specific places. Those are the places where you’re gonna want to focus your resources. Stats aren’t the end game—they’re a starting point for discovering your audience. Use them to guide your decisions and connect better.

4. Subscriptions

Aside from your social media, there’s another fantastic tool to get in touch with your fans: a mailing list. Mailing lists let you turn one-time listeners into long time fans.

They’ve been around forever. Many bands used to post a form at their merch table at shows to give fans the option to stay in touch. Newsletters have since gone digital, but the benefit is still there for staying connected.

Services like Mailchimp or Bandzoogle let you capture and manage your contacts and send out quick and simple newsletters direct to your fans.

Your mailing list is an effective communication tool, especially at a time when social media feeds are overcrowded. Your newsletter is a space that’s all your own.

A casual fan on social media becomes a longterm supporter when you give them the option of signing up to your mailing list.

Subscriptions are a sign of trust. If someone gives you their email, they trust you to use it well. It means they’re paying attention and they want to stay updated about your music. So subscribers is one of the most important metrics to target. Every subscriber is not just a listener, but a true fan who is interested enough in your music to let you into their everyday lives—pretty powerful when you think about it…

It’s your chance to send personalized, honest, interesting content to a receptive audience—like a photo essay from your last tour, your upcoming shows, your radio appearances, your releases, press about you, your merch (also a great place to offer discounts), etc.

Add your newsletter signup link when you share newly released music or in your social media bios.

A casual fan on social media becomes a longterm supporter when you give them the option of signing up to your mailing list. So your subscriptions stats going up are a great sign that you’re doing it right.

5. Your Inbox

The most important connection you can make with your fans is meaningful one-on-one interactions. So messages in your inbox is another important metric. Treat each on like a connections that could open doors to opportunity.

Think about it: a direct message means that a fan, blogger, or booker:

Likes your project enough to take the time out of their busy schedule to message you directly.

Views you and your music as approachable and honest.

Wants to dig deeper into your music and learn more about something that’s intrigued them.

It’s a very human response when so many things in music today can seem cold and lifeless.

Make yourself available to your fans and community by posting your artist email on your social profiles or when sharing a new release to your social media pages (fan mail starts with fans knowing where to send it!).

The most important connection you can make with your fans is meaningful one-on-one interactions.

Respond as quickly as you can and make every encounter as wholesome as possible. One genuine interaction with someone that’s interested in your music can make heaps of difference when most music industry emails or direct messages are forgotten. It’s the little things that add up over time.

Having your contact info out in the open shows that you are approachable and makes people more inclined to get in touch with you. Which means potential invites to make a guest mix, appear on a radio show, or even release on a label. You’ll never know unless you’re available.

If people write to you make a point of personally responding to each message. Set a good precedent by being a nice person (what a concept!). Make it what makes YOU stand out.

Metric system

Every social metric counts towards your big picture. Don’t obsess over specifics like boosting your plays or your likes.

Look at all your social sharing and platforms as part of a bigger goal: Building a following of dedicated and engaged fans that feel a personal connection with you and your music.

Behind every stream, like or play there’s a human being. Use your social sharing tools and platforms to do everything you can to be a human back.

Hey everyone! Before we get started, we here at kissfanxing would like to thank everyone that’s claimed prompts/self prompted so far! We’re excited to see so many people enthusiastic about kissfanxing round 3, and we really cannot thank all of you enough for participating. If you have yet to sign-up for kissfanxing, be sure to check our our claiming instructions to see how you can join in on the fun!

Now, onto the fun stuff…

New to kissfanxing this year, the mods are happy to introduce the buddy system as a part of our 2017-2018 round! You’ve probably seen heard bits and pieces regarding the buddy system throughout the info posts and emails that we’ve been sending out, but the time has come to provide full info on what exactly the buddy system is, what it entails, and how to join if you’re interested!

➵ So, what is the buddy system?

The buddy system is a way to connect kissfanxing participants with the mods to help ease some of the stress/pressure (stressure?) that comes with the creative process. Buddy system participants will have the opportunity to be paired up with one of the four kissfanxing mods (pinky, bubbles, bucky, egghead) to act as sort of a “mentor” throughout the kissfanxing journey.

➵ What is the purpose of the buddy system?

Our goal in introducing the buddy system is so that participants/potential participants don’t let the daunting nature of writing/drawing/creating work deter them from joining kissfanxing. As writers ourselves, we know how stressful creating fanwork can be, so that’s why we created the buddy system to provide support in any way we can. We’re hoping that the installation of the buddy system helps put first time participants at ease, as well as draw in people interested in joining kissfanxing but don’t know where to start with navigating fests. And even if this isn’t your first time doing kissfanxing, you’re still welcome to join in on the buddy system.

Overall, the buddy system fits in well with this year’s theme of “spreading the love” - we’re hoping that this way, everyone, whether new or old, will feel welcomed into the fanxing community.

➵ How does the buddy system work?

Once participants are assigned to their designated “squad” (my squad is with me, we’re the cream de la cre-me), they will be asked to make a Discord account (discordapp.com) so they can be added to the kissfanxing server and their specific “squad leader” (mod) channel (i.e. #pinky, #bubbles, #bucky, #egghead).

Think of Discord like a series of customized chatrooms. The kissfanxing server is open to all of our participants on Discord, while the individual mod channels are private to the mod and the members of their squad. From there, private chats can be opened between (groups of) people, and there are other channels that participants can join/be added to, all of which is outlined in the Discord guide that will be sent out.

Most of the communication between the mods and their squad members will (preferably) take place through Discord. Buddy system participants will be emailed a guide to Discord (written by our fellow mod bucky), and these instructions are also posted on the general kissfanxing server. If, for any reason, a participant is unable to use Discord, we are willing to make accommodations (see below). Please don’t let Discord deter you from signing up from the buddy system. The buddy system is fluid because we want to make work for everyone; as such, we’d be willing to offer assistance in any way that we can.

From there, the buddy system becomes pretty flexible. The role of the squad leader is to act as a companion throughout the kissfanxing journey, which can take many forms - being a beta, an advice-giver, an idea-bouncer, etc. It can really be anything the participant wants. The primary goal is just to provide a method of support whenever a participant needs it, as the mods are aware of how taxing it can be to produce fanwork. Additionally, the participant can choose to communicate with other members of their squad via the squad channel, as well as other kissfanxing participants via our general server! We’re really aiming to create a network of support for those who need or want it, and we hope participating in the buddy system will ultimately be a rewarding experience for everyone.

➵ How do I choose the mod that’s right for me?

Mod profiles will be posted below this section of the info post so that you can become better acquainted with the mods. As each of the four mods generally specialize in different genres/areas, we hope that, after reading those, you can choose the mod(s) that would be the best fit for you.

While we try to honor all requests as best as we can, please note that “squad” designation is ultimately up to the mods’ discretion; we want to try to make the numbers as even as possible across the four mods so that no mod has an unbalanced load of participants to be responsible for. As a result, we encourage you to list more than one mod that you’d be comfortable being paired up with on the sign-up form.

➵ This all sounds great! How do I join the buddy system?

You can start by checking out the mod profiles listed below this part of the info post so you can see which mods would be the best fit for you. After that, fill out the the buddy system sign-up form with all of the appropriate details. You will receive a confirmation email within a few days with further information regarding the squad you’ve been placed into and detailed instructions on how to sign up for Discord and be added to the kissfanxing server. From there, you will be added into a specific channel for your squad leader, and you can be added into other channels from there as well.

➵ Some final notes:

➺ There is no closing deadline to join the buddy system. Buddy system signups will be open all the way up to the submission deadline of February 7th, and participants can join at any point up until then.

➺ It is possible to join the buddy system/the kissfanxing Discord without being paired up with a specific mod - just let us know in the appropriate section on the form, and we can help you get set up with being added to the general kissfanxing server.

➺ The buddy system is entirely optional, you can still participate in kissfanxing without participating in the buddy system. However, it should be mentioned that those not participating in the buddy system will have to fill out a check-in form in early January - the idea is that buddy system participants are in somewhat constant contact with the mods, therefore forgoing the need for a formal check-in. (So, if you wanna kill two birds with one stone, all the more reason to sign up for the buddy system!)

➺ The mods reserve the right to remove anyone from any Discord server/channel at any time for any reason.

➺ The use of Discord is not mandatory to be a part of the buddy system. Though, for organizational purposes, we would prefer having everyone on the Discord server, we are willing to make accommodations for those who cannot access/figure out Discord (ex. through Twitter DMs, Tumblr, KKT/Line/WeChat, etc.) Again, please don’t let Discord deter you from signing up for the buddy system; we’re here to help you, not confuse you further.

5 Social Media Metrics That Musicians Think About All Wrong: via LANDR Blog

Metrics for musicians.

Today you have all sorts of numbers flying at you: likes, shares, listens, plays, streams, spins, royalties and mentions. It can all seem pretty hollow when you’re trying to stay inspired and dedicated to producing your best work.

This week we added the new LANDR Share to Social feature that lets you share your music directly to your social channels from your LANDR library and connect with your fans in many ways.

But it got me thinking, “After I share my music, what now? What metrics actually matter? And who’s really listening?”

Understand your metrics, track your following and make the connections that really matter for building a healthy and happy fanbase.

1. Likes

So your music is finally done! You take the plunge and share it to socials. Great, people start liking your track on social media! The thumb is getting sore from thumbing so much!

Likes are great. They’re a perfect starting point for tracking your success…

But the question you need to be asking is WHO liked your track and why?

It all helps to build a story around your track and add value to the plays that you’re getting.

Nothing is better than a real honest exchange, digital, or real life. Likes should be a starting point for building a relationship with your fans, not the endgame that you obsess about too much.

2. Shares

Sharing is caring. The same goes for your music. If people share it, it means they’re doing more than scrolling through their feed and liking something distractedly or out of obligation.

3. Streams

So you just distributed your track. You’re nervously checking your stats every hour in hope that your stream counts go up.

Trust me, I’ve been there too. Whatever you do, don’t let it become an obsession! Stressing about stream stats can distract you from understanding the bigger picture.

Stats aren’t the end game—they’re a starting point for discovering your audience. Use them to guide your decisions and connect better.

Reach out to a blog from a region where your music is getting streamed to feature your music

Reach out to a local radio station

Write to fellow musicians you admire in those areas

Book an out of town show

4. Subscriptions

Aside from your social media, there’s another fantastic tool to get in touch with your fans: a mailing list. Mailing lists let you turn one-time listeners into long time fans.

Services like Mailchimp or Bandzoogle let you capture and manage your contacts and send out quick and simple newsletters direct to your fans.

Your mailing list is an effective communication tool, especially at a time when social media feeds are overcrowded. Your newsletter is a space that’s all your own.

A casual fan on social media becomes a longterm supporter when you give them the option of signing up to your mailing list.

Add your newsletter signup link when you share newly released music or in your social media bios.

5. Your Inbox

Think about it: a direct message means that a fan, blogger, or booker:

Likes your project enough to take the time out of their busy schedule to message you directly.

Views you and your music as approachable and honest.

Wants to dig deeper into your music and learn more about something that’s intrigued them.

It’s a very human response when so many things in music today can seem cold and lifeless.

The most important connection you can make with your fans is meaningful one-on-one interactions.

If people write to you make a point of personally responding to each message. Set a good precedent by being a nice person (what a concept!). Make it what makes YOU stand out.

The Bigger Picture

Every social metric counts towards your big picture. Don’t obsess over specifics like boosting your plays or your likes.

Look at all your social sharing and platforms as part of a bigger goal: Building a following of dedicated and engaged fans that feel a personal connection with you and your music.

Behind every stream, like or play there’s a human being. Use your social sharing tools and platforms to do everything you can to be a human back.
