We've entered the transgender stage of my writing class (it's focused on gender) and I'm just now realising how misinformed cis people are about trans issues and trans life in general. Like i knewww they weren't that informed but its honestly really annoying because you KNOW they all have opinions but half the time those opinions are poorly formed and are supported by bad data. Like if you want to be transphobic whatever. Im not going to try to change your mind in a university classroom. But don't try to justify it with strawmen and data thats taken out of context. Or refuse to actually think critically about the data presented.
Today I have to workshop someones beginning argument for a persuasive paper and it says, "studies show that only 2% of trans people are over 50 years old. This proves that it's a new phenomenon" and i was just. Floored. Because it ignored the intricacies of trans existence. It ignores queer and trans history. It's sooo annoying I want to smash this class to smitherins yesterday I had to play nice about JK Rowling
#this sort of goes in line with a book im reading regarding trauma informed education throughout preK#and how in trying to teach about societal issues we often inadvertantly subject students to microaggressions#and its definitely something that i feel is reflected in the current state of my writing course#and i realise that these conversations have to exist in academia but damn is it annoying#rambles
