Crush At First Sight
Pairing: Nishinoya X Reader
Words: 2K
Summary: Attending the boy's volleyball finals was a no brainer-you'd take any opportunity to ditch school. You didn't think you'd find yourself getting so attached to one of the players...
Notes: I don't believe that someone could watch Noya play and not instantly fall in love, so I did him right
Masterlist
The only time youâd heard about the boyâs volleyball team was when someone called them âflightless crowsâ in the hallway, which you assumed was a bad thing. However, when your friends mentioned they were skipping class to apparently watch them play in the Spring finals you were all for attending.
Youâd take any opportunity to ditch school-even if it was to watch some guys lose a volleyball game.
The stadium was more filled than you were expecting. As you slid through the crowd to find three open seats you realized perhaps this was a bigger deal than youâd anticipated. Once seated, Michimiya passed everyone noise makers sheâd picked up from some guys near the stadiumâs entrance. You tested the bright orange cone-shaped objects by lightly tapping them together.
âSo, they must have really improved this year, huh?â You said as your eyes wandered around the packed stands, apparently you werenât the only ones skipping school today.
âThey got a new coach,â Michimiya said, bouncing lightly from nerves and anticipation, âand a lot of talented first years.â
âNot hard on the eyes either,â Aihara nudged your shoulder and gestured towards the team congregated on the sidelines around their coaches. You nodded slowly as you scanned the group, lingering on the unfortunate boy who got stuck with the orange jersey.
At least he could pull it off.
The teams took the court, their anticipation radiating into the audience and extending even to you as you clutched your noise makers tightly. After the whistle was blown, and the first serve made, the game of Karasuno vs Shiratorizawa officially began.
A few minutes into the match you found your gaze latching onto the guy in the orange jersey. Shiratorizawa was terrifying, especially the big guy with his powerful spikes. You winced the first time you saw it because you couldnât imagine receiving something like that without breaking your arms, but the libero guy was doing it like it was nothing. He had adapted to the playstyle and for every ball that made your stomach drop he would appear from seemingly nowhere and make a save.
There was something about the way he could go from intensely focused on the court to relaxed on the sidelines within moments that had you mesmerized, as well. You couldnât help the weird fullness in your chest as he guzzled down water and smiled goofily to some of his teammates after their first set as if the pressure wasnât weighing on him.
âWhat are you so focused on?â Michimiya asked while bopping you on the head with her cone.
âNothing,â you said as the boys began to take the court again, preparing for the next serve. âHey, what was number fourâs name?â
Aiharaâs brow quirked. âNishinoya, why?â
âIâm just wondering...â You said, subconsciously smiling when he slid and barely saved the ball with one hand. âHeâs just pretty good is all.â
âDaichi said heâs their âGuardian Deityâ,â Michimiya wiggled her eyebrows at you.
âBoys are so dramatic.â Aihara scoffed.
You couldnât argue that one.
As the sets continued you found yourself growing increasingly attached to Nishinoya: heart dropping if he missed a ball, swelling with pride anytime he made a play, and youâd even find your cheeks warming whenever you caught sight of him smiling to himself or a teammate. It was becoming embarrassing, truthfully, considering youâd never even talked to him.
âAlright, at least pretend youâre not obsessively staring at him.â Aihara nudged you playfully as the fourth set wrapped up and the boys were switching sides on the court.
âIâm not.â
Michimiya giggled, bopping you on the nose. âYou geek out every time he touches the ball. Itâs not hard to notice.â
âYouâre one to talk. As if you havenât been fangirling over Daichi.â Aihara leaned back, sighing dramatically. âIâm trapped between a pair of lovesick fools.â
âI donât even know the guy,â you felt your cheeks warming. âEven if I did he probably wouldnât be interested in--â
âHave you ever met Nishinoya before?â Aihara interrupted you. âLike, at school or in any context? Heard about him or talked to him⊠anything?â
You shook your head and they both started laughing lightly before Michimiya put a hand on your shoulder. âTrust me, youâll be fine.â
You tilted your head in confusion, but before you could form a retort the refâs whistle signaled the start of the final set. Your grip on the noise makers were tight as both sides fought strongly, neither willing to lose a single point and give up their chance for nationals. It felt surreal when Karasuno pulled that final point. Everyone erupted into cheers as the three of you held onto each other, jumping and shouting, unable to contain your excitement while celebrating the boyâs well earned victory. Boys who were currently dogpiled in the center of the court while the third years had tears streaming down their faces in disbelief.
It was an honor to be a part of and you couldnât have been prouder to have them representing your school. When they lined up in front of you and bowed to thank you all for your attendance you clutched your hands against your chests. They really earned the win.
You were pulled out of your randomly emotional train of thought by Aiharaâs grip tugging you behind her as they shuffled out of the stands.
âWhere are we going?â You asked when they left the gym opposite the stadiumâs exit.
âWeâre going to congratulate the guys!â Michimiya sent a smile over her shoulder and your heart accelerated to an unhealthy pace.
âI donât know if Iâm mentally prepared for that scenario,â you pointed toward the opposite end of the hall. âMaybe I should just meet you guys outside and-â
âOh no you donât,â Aihara began pushing you forward by your shoulders and you started to whine in protest. âYou are strong and fearless and no boy shall knock you down.â
Michimiya giggled ahead of you where she remained completely useless in your time of need. You let Aihara guide you through groups of people finding their way toward the exit until you all spotted the boyâs team in their telling Karasuno volleyball club jackets.
You did a quick scan of everyone, but didnât see the spiked hair youâd been observing for so long. You werenât sure if it was relief or disappointment you felt.
âThere he is,â Aihara gave you a squeeze, pointing near the far wall where Nishinoya was digging through his duffel bag on the ground, eyebrows furrowed and tongue stuck out adorably in concentration. Your heart started pounding at the sight of him so close. The bizarre realization that he was in fact a real person finally hit which made your palms sweaty.
âAs it turns out. I have decided to denounce myself from boys and am going to live a life of celibacy.â You nodded confidently, trying to make a u-turn, but Aihara annoyingly spun you around.
âShut up,â she rolled her eyes. âJust talk to him. I promise it will work out.â She patted your shoulder. âTrust me.â
You glared at her, mumbling insults under your breath as you slowly walked over to where Nishinoya continued to dig through his mess of a bag. You took a deep breath and decided your best move was to just deep dive straight into your doom. What could possibly go wrong?
âUh, Nishinoya, right?â
He glanced at you briefly, looking you up and down before continuing to dig through his bag.âYep, do need you help finding someone?â He triumphantly pulled out some IcyHot before pointing toward where the rest of his team lounged. âMost of the guys are over there.â
âI was actually hoping to talk to you.â You winced as you noticed the bruises that decorated his arms when he started to peel off his jacket.
âWhy? Is something wrong? Do you have a message for me or something?â
âNo⊠I just wanted to tell you how amazing I thought you were today.â You quickly glanced away in embarrassment when he finally looked up at you with wide-eyes. You dug your toe into the ground as you urged yourself to continue, âI was watching you and just thought you were really cool and--â
âSorry,â he chuckled and put a hand up to stop you. âI was actually wearing the orange jersey. Number four.â He pointed to the others in the center of the hall again. âThe guy you're looking for is probably over there.â
You blinked. âNishinoya. Orange jersey. Number four. Libero. Guardian Deity or whatever.â Your embarrassment was dissolving into frustration. âIs that you?â
âYeah?â
âThen Iâm looking for you.â
He stared at his bag as his brain tried to process the situation youâd presented to him. Suddenly, his gaze whipped up at you. âHoly shit,â he pointed his finger at himself. âYouâre talking to me.â
âHave been.â
He tensed and locked his eyes on the IcyHot he was currently trying to rub on his back. He quickly threw it near his bag and you felt another fond smile growing on your face. âIâm Nishinoya,â he said, extending his hand toward you before shoving it down to his side. âWait, you know that. Shit, were you complimenting me? Did you just call me cool?â
âI did do that, yeah.â
His face turned a bright shade of red, âbut you canât do that it goes against all the rules.â
âWhat are you-â
âLook,â He pointed his finger between the two of you causing you to raise a brow. âIâm supposed to flirt with and compliment you, then you say something mean that hurts my feelings.â He smacked his shoes for finality. âItâs a strict formula.â
âWhatâs the formula for when I flirt with you then?â You asked, a sly smirk spreading across your lips. His shoulders went up to his ears and he stared at his hands longer than you felt necessary for such a simple question.
He looked up at you defeated. âI donât know Iâm bad at math.â
You covered your mouth to hold back the laugh trying to force its way out. He was just so cute though. âWell, so am I, but mutual flirting seems like a good solution. If you were an interested party that is.â
âIâm a very interested partyâŠâ He murmured under his breath while narrowing his eyes at you. âDid Tanaka put you up to this?â
âI donât know who that is.â
He furrowed his brow in thought before pulling a flip phone out from his duffel and holding it out to you, âcan I have your number?â
Your cheeks dusted pink as you created your contact under Nishinoyaâs intense gaze. He hurriedly checked itâs existence when you returned the phone to him, staring at it skeptically while he cradled the phone in his hands.
âI promise itâs mine.â You reassured him and he embarrassingly snapped the phone closed.
âOkay,â he mumbled.
â(Y/N)!â Aihara yelled from where the rest of Karasunoâs team was grouped and not so subtly staring at you both. Your face slowly blossomed red and in your peripheral you saw Nishinoya flip off the ones waving at him. âWeâre heading out. Are you done or do you need more time with your-â
âIâll be right there.â You interrupted, glancing back to Nishinoya. âIâll, uh, talk to you soon?â
He shot you a double thumbs up and you couldnât stop from snorting at how adorable that was, especially when he started at them in shame. You waved a good-bye and narrowly dodged the small group already sprinting to Nishinoya while you werenât even a few steps away.
Aihara wrapped an arm around your shoulder as your eyes lingered on boys rubbing Nishinoyaâs head, bouncing around excitedly, or giving him suggestive looks. You felt your stomach rolling from embarrassment at all the attention he was receiving from such a small interaction.
âIgnore them. Theyâre just stupid boys.â
âI guessâŠâ
âBut one of themâs your stupid boy.â Michimiya said, poking you in the stomach. You swatted her hands away, and chewed your lip to keep down a smile when your phone vibrated. The âhello :)â from an unknown number made your heart flutter.
Yeah, one of them was your stupid boy.

Aww heck, I never posted about Marble Nest! Letâs talk about Marble Nest. We played it, we got all four endings, there were a couple things I maybe wanted to try but we didnât but thatâs okay, it would be pretty easy to replay. A couple thoughts.
As a player character, Daniil makes for a very very different playstyle than Artemy. Itâs wild how all the actual mechanics of the game can be the same and yet such slight tweaks can change the feeling of the game so much. Like how everyone talking to you but how almost no one trading with you makes the whole town seem completely different.
Daniil sees the town as a chessboard and Artemy sees it as a body. This Daniil seems to know a lot fewer people than Artemy knew.
The pacing is also very interesting. The whole âtime to make your nightly roundsâ thing, is that something Daniil does? Is that part of his gameplay loop?
Coming out of having just finished Pathologic 2, wherein everyoneâs constantly bitching at and/or trying to kill Artemy every four seconds, playing as Daniil felt like a fucking power trip. People are like âhey can you do this pleaseâ and Iâm like â...wait can I do this? I can just do this??âÂ
I think overall I prefer playing as Artemy, although maybe I was just more accustomed to it.
Daniil is a BITCH.
No seriously, when playing Pathologic, I felt kind of bad about continually dragging Daniil because deep down there was always this little part of me that was like âyou know heâs just trying his best, same as you, he doesnât deserve all this shit youâre throwing at himâ but now that Iâve gotten to walk a mile in his shoes I can definitively say that he absolutely deserved all of the shit I was throwing at him, and also I think Artemy deserved to punch him once. (After that they can go back to being friends/lovers/colleagues, however you interpret them, but he should get to punch him once.)
Okay enough about Artemy, heâs didnât even appear in this game.
Wait one last thing, in the list of townsfolk it showed Artemy as having a name rather than being called âHaruspexâ, but in the main game Daniil was listed as âBachelorâ?Â
God, that list. Seeing so many dead kids. :( Daniil you did not protect my children. Oh, Mark Immortell was there and was in danger, in the Bachelor route am I allowed to let him die from the plague, is that a thing I can do, please? My besties Lara, Bad Grief, and Victor were also dead, but Stakh was alive! I tried to visit him but I couldnât, the game doesnât let you cross the river even if you go alllllll the way around it. I tried to find Aglaya too but couldnât.
Seeing the town map was so heartbreaking. Quarantining the stone yard and letting everyone else die is a pretty pragmatic decision bUT ALSO!!!!!! My KIDS.
The loop was neat, how everyone kept saying you were dead and how you didnât know why until the end, and I loved how the town kind of was your body. (Do the fires mean youâre feverish? Does the cold mean youâre dying?) This game has always been excellent about how it nests themes within themes and symbols within symbols, and Marble Nest was no exception.
Kind of hilarious tho how the ultimate theme is âif you donât want your favorite character to die, just stop reading the book, or maybe start over and reread the parts where theyâre still alive forever.â Turns out you really can beat death Daniil, good job. :)
(âBut wait! I may be a fictional character, but the disease which kills me is also fictional! AU in which itâs not real fuck youâ Honestly what did I expect coming from the same people who had a plot-critical messenger murdered offscreen by the understudy of the protagonist.)
This characterâs themes seem to be very lofty. Again, I think I vibed more with the more grounded side of things, but I love metafuckery so you know.
That time I was in that house and I was like âI might need to check out some roomsâ and the other guy was like âhere, I have the master keyâ and hands me a lockpick, I actually laughed. Incredible.
The PANTOMIME. God that was such a vibe. Compared to everything else in Pathologic, it was so animated! I do love the âyouâre heartless, come back to me when you have a heartâ and then in the next loop I hand them a human heart and theyâre like â.....dude, have you ever heard of a fucking metaphor, holy shit why are you giving me this.â
The CLOAK. The MASK. The S A N D A L S. Hhhhhhhhhhhhh.
Wearing the ensemble and literally being immune to the plague zone, I was like âwow this is fucking op how is this even allowedâ although I guess Marble Nest was also written so that you can last the whole game on literally one piece of toast.
It was so weird to go around places where I know twyre grows and not hear any bugs. I did take a nice incredibly long walk through the steppe just to see how far the game would let me go though, because it was nice and pretty and who the fuck has time for that while in Pathologic?Â
I didnât really talk much before with Georgiy Kain, but fuuuuuuck what is wrong with that guy? If Daniilâs been hanging out with him, I can fucking understand why he became obsessed with the polyhedron at the end.
And Aspity, oh god I have so many questions, what are you, I donât think we ever cleared that up.
And Shrew! Whatâs her deal?? There were actually a lot of very memorable NPCâs who didnât even have their own custom designs.
I donât know much about Pathologic 1 but I think Eva killed herself in the Bachelor route? Does that mean sheâs going to die in this Bachelor route if it ever comes out? I mean presumably Marble Nest already deviates from that game quite a bit since I donât think Artemy dies in it (and I donât think Daniil does either.)
Gee Daniil! How come your mom lets you have two funerals?
A little sad Changeling never came by to say hi, I would have liked to see her. Although I guess sheâs busy trying to save my ass irl. I know I remembered seeing the steam page for Marble Nest earlier and being like âhuh thatâs sort of a strange poster for the game, isnât Artemy supposed to be dead?â And then I played it and I just took a moment and turned to my sister and was like âhey look at thisâ and she was like â...yup thatâs literally the game.â
Overall it was a fun time. Very short comparatively, very clever.Â
#kj plays pathologic#i need a post-marble nest au where changeling and artemy cure daniil and he wakes up in his cold sweat#and daniil is reeling and the others are like ''are you okay'' and daniil looks at artemy and is like ''i had a dream where you were dead''#and artemy is deadpan ''that sounds horrible'' and daniil completely seriously says ''it was'' and artemy is like ''wow be less obvious''#man au where he just randomly gets sick and has the whole marble nest fever dream and spends the rest of the game talking about it#he goes to sticky like ''you were there you helped me'' and artemy is like ''dude we already cured you stop talking to my son and go away''#pathologic 2#marble nest#pathologic
