ALRIGHT ALRIGHT Actually I'm going to share my fresh, sleep-deprived thoughts that I wrote yesterday- or more like, this morning gfhhgf bear with me cause I was loosing it :>
⚠ Heavy spoilers under read more!
As a heads up as to why the formating is all weird, this was sent to a friendo who worked on PL :3 Did a list of things that stuck to me in those 4-5 first hours right before falling asleep! I stoped at the little hideout with Myers, didn't met Reed or Kurt or MrHands or Anybody elses yet really 👁👄👁✋ taking my sweet time with it!
The start : I LOVED the glitchy holocall with songbird, it set the tone immediately
God walking up to the gate and seeing all those cars and npcs waiting to enter- THE BIT with the cops who cant go in ?? omg loved it, again its such a tiny thing that set the tone right up
Songbird introduction oh my goddddddd…. HGJG I love HER SHE'S SO COOL… When she was like "were going to crash so I woobled into your relic" I was???? Ok so How and What and What and What UH… Also I can see why people won't like her, already just cause she mute Johnny and isnt a Samurai fan fhdjbqg BUT I PERSONALLY REALLY LIKE IT
Dogtown itself???? Holyshit. Like, I remember dev saying that Night City itself was a character, the main character even, and they nailed it hardcore with Dogtown too- all of the civilians are fucking so memorable too??? how good the random crowd npcs look as well!! Its a glowup from vanilla and it shows (special kudos to the netrunner kid vendor, and the flame thrower elbow guy and his little dance ghdjs)
I wheezed when trying the AR googles HGKHQ
The crash : God. Even tho I knew what was going to happen, the amount of chills I had during that scene!! It reminded me of one of my favorite DLC from Mass Effect 3, Citadel, there is a scene where Shepard eat shit and fall through a big aquarium / building and is truly alone, hurt and all- gave me the same vibes of "the world is too big, too Much and I'm just one Guy" ??? It got me so hookt, god. ALSO THE TITLE POPING??? UUUGGGHHH. GOD.
Rush to the crash, the sneaking to the ship and getting Myers got me Alert and excited
Escorting Myers feels nice cause she's not useless, she knows how to handle herself (DUH!) but I mean her A.I as a NPC, I like that she also sneak attack on ennemies when you do, like Jackie did
Part I had struggle with was the Driving Myers to the Garage bits, was getting frustrated- I love driving in FPP but with this car, in those streets and in this stressful situation YUOOOCK it wasnt IT FHFJJG switched to TPP and managed after a few tries UwU
OK GOD. The museum- amazing visuals and lore crumbs ofc BUT THE CHIMERA???? HELLO???????? THEY FUCKING POPPED OFF. I havent felt this stressed on a boss battle in FOREVER! Funny enough it reminded me of my first time against Nefarious from Ratchet and clank 3, and its positive HKGJ I was a wee kid back then and its my favorite game from the ratchet serie (which is my favorite console serie tbh) and it made me so nostalgic of that time??? REALLY Comf, really challenging, I shat myself.
District itself is FUCKING INSANE. Of course, it looks amazing, the sound design, the VIBES- I thought everything was already done in night city, how much different nuance of CyberPunk can you do when you already have such a big city with such different districts?? but dogtown is so different and yet fit perfectly
I LOVE. THE. NOMAD DIALOGUE OPTIONS… One of my big "fear" was being left out of the fun cause yeah Nomads really just have the badlands kinda hfjdjg but!!! I already been fed from the few choices I had, especially the one when cutting out the tracker from Myers neck, mentioning the uhh ritual thing, I was !!!!!!! AAAAAH FOOD FOR THOUGHTS AND ROTS I LOVE IT
talking about Nomads I LOVE THE DIVERSITY in the new garments!! Had a lot of corpo and barghest armor loot at the start, so I didnt expected to see some cool denim harnesses, practical jeans and worker gears OwO Excited to see more cause AZHHHGFH

Me, standing in a corner of the Philza Ao3 tag like a lonely Victorian orphan girl: hardcore lore? Can you spare any hardcore lore? Non-SBI stories, perhaps? Anything?
#philza#please philza is a genuinely interesting character#and his hardcore lore especially in series 4 is so cool#please just give me philza content that isn’t tied into his status as a parent#please give me philza content that doesn’t turn him into a fatherly story prop

Was there ever a Sonic antagonist/rival that you wish SEGA gave more attention to? Maybe not making them a mainstay like Eggman, but at least bringing them back once in a while instead of having them appear in one game, then dipping?
Mostly? No. Let's look at who we're working with here:
Metal Sonic: He's constantly being brought back as the defacto subordinate of Eggman. This will upset some hardcore lore heads, but if you count all variants, Metal Sonic has appeared in Sonic CD, Sonic 2, Sonic & Knuckles, Knuckles Chaotix, Sonic R, Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Heroes, was intended to appear in Sonic 06 as DLC, Sonic 4, Sonic Generations, Sonic Boom, and Sonic Forces. That's also ignoring a lot of the portable games, where he showed up often. He will probably be in Sonic Rangers and is getting added to Sonic Colors Ultimate Edition. I love Metal Sonic though so it's cool.
Knuckles: Much like Metal Sonic, Knuckles is a mainstay of the series. He's probably been in more games than Metal, come to think of it.
Chaos: He got reformed at the end of Sonic Adventure so he's technically not a villain anymore. I'm sure there's more they could do with him, though, but his story is finished.
Shadow the Hedgehog: In the same category as Metal Sonic and Knuckles.
Mephiles/Iblis/Solaris: Good riddance, I say. Mephiles is basically just "The Evil Twin of an Evil Twin" and that's just bad storytelling in my book. Iblis is nothing more than just a big angry kaiju with zero personality, and Solaris is... too weird to be anything notable? Solaris barely even classifies as a monster, it's more just this shape that attacks. Which fits, given it's supposed to be this incomprehensible entity controlling all of space and time. It should probably look weird and unknowable. But it's also not something you can just bring back.
Erazor Djinn: Dude is not a major player. He exists exclusively in the realm of his book. What would he even want to do if he escaped? I'm not even sure he wanted to escape. He just wanted to rule the world of his story, didn't he? I guess I never finished Secret Rings. Point is, Sonic left that world and it seemed pretty wrapped up nice and neat.
Merlina: Her whole thing is that she was worried people would forget about her world's story. She wasn't ever really evil, just deeply afraid and maybe lonely. But, again, like Erazor Djinn, everything about her felt very self-contained and it would be weird bringing her out of that story and back for more.
Dark Gaia: They pretty explicitly say that Dark Gaia only comes once every epoch. More could be explored there, I guess, but fighting the creature of Dark Gaia itself doesn't seem like something worth revisiting.
Nega Mother Wisp: Along the lines of Iblis, this is less of a character to revisit and more just a monster. The circumstances of which don't really make sense revisiting. I know wisps are still around, but "oh no the nega mother wisp is back too!" seems weird and cheap to me.
The Time Eater: I don't know what this thing is and Sonic Generations doesn't explain it. Honestly? I'd be fine with a new game at least referencing The Time Eater. It could be related to Solaris. It could be a side effect of all of Sonic's time travel alterations, like The Dahaka or The Langoliers. The Time Eater feels important and they neglected to explain anything about it. They didn't even hint about it.
The Deadly Six: No.
Infinite: He's cut from the same cloth as Mephiles and feels like Dollar Store Shadow the Hedgehog. Oh here's this totally epic brooding rival with a mysterious magical power! Boring. We already have those. I'd be fine if he never comes back, because he's super generic and forgettable. At least Mephiles had "half of the devil's soul" as his character trait.
People like to say that Fang the Sniper needs to come back, but I eventually got sick of hearing that. Dude was all over the Archie comics for years and was in a fair few games: four or five, almost six if you count Sonic X-treme. He had his time and we don't need him coming back in every single game. Or even every other game.
But yeah. I dunno. I don't feel an especially strong connection with any of these guys where I feel like I want them to be returning characters.

Manda-Lore: 10 Things You Need To Know About Mandalorians Before Watching Disney’s The Mandalorian
Bounty hunters are cool no matter what fandom they belong to. However, among all these tough-as-nails guns and swords for hire, one stands out as the most stylish of them all, Boba Fett. Sadly, he got eaten by a Sarlacc and was defeated by a blind man... by accident. Thankfully, Disney was kind enough to do justice to their other Star Wars bounty hunters in the form of The Mandalorian.
RELATED: Star Wars: 10 Things You Didn't Know About Boba Fett's Suit
It's pretty much the Boba Fett fan service show we Fett fanboys have been clamoring for over the years. Of course, it's not exactly about Fett but another strong, silent type badass who wears the same armor - the iconic armor of the Mandalorian race in Star Wars. So before the show officially lands, it's time to brush up on your Manda-lore. Here's what you need to know about Mandalorians.
10 A RACE OF WARLIKE SUPERCOMMANDOS
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/321235f1718cbba9e007443485c7027e/ebe36fd9ac60bacf-f3/s540x810/999e8ea2a7dad3c5b2118145aa7f05381200e52e.jpg)
These guys are pretty hardcore. They were born and bred to be conquerors and conquer they did. Mandalorians are human but they are of a different breed since they originated from warriors, bounty, hunters, and mercenaries. That is something they used to full effect. They even managed to have their own commendable pocket in the universe called The Mandalorian Space; it's their conquered domain.
Due to their reputation and expertise for war, they have become feared in the Outer Rim. Eventually, their aggressive expansion led them to the Jedi's area of jurisdiction in the Inner Rim. As you can imagine, the Jedi did not warm up to their arrival and quickly resisted the Mandalorians. All-out war between the two factions ensued.
9 THEY HATE THE JEDI
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/275e19aefe2d157df8965ed2d1879d9e/ebe36fd9ac60bacf-01/s540x810/37e4366c167f3de97ec04765dd4a49ba3e1b42ae.jpg)
The Jedi Order and the Old Republic that they were defending proved to be more than a match against the Mandalorians. The race of warrior humans soon became outmatched with the Force on the Jedi's side. Still, they quickly adapted and built new technologies in order to counteract the formidable Jedi knights.
RELATED: Star Wars: 10 Characters Underused Throughout The Whole Series
The Jedi were unyielding (they had to be) and the Mandalorians were stubborn, meaning their conflicts were long and drawn-out. One could even assume that the Mandalorians treated the Jedi as their sworn nemesis faction. Due to having several wars and victories against the Jedi Order, Mandalorian warriors soon became known for their capability to fight the Jedi; they are among the few (probably the only) non-Force users in the Galaxy who could go toe-to-toe with Jedi.
8 ONE OF THEM BECAME A JEDI
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/38250ef39e751de081dfbb2b285d6b06/ebe36fd9ac60bacf-63/s540x810/fa9d826cb0f3aa5f3982c12a6c7da768e9256680.jpg)
It wasn't until a Mandalorian named Tarre Vizsla took over that the Mandalorians shared a prolonged peace with the Jedi. Tarre was from a prominent house (royalty) in Mandalore and was somehow inducted into the Jedi Order. There, Tarre became a Jedi and was considered as the first Mandalorian to do so.
Eventually, Tarre would return to his home planet to set things straight; he became the ruler of Mandalore at one point. He was well-liked- even revered by the Mandalorians, despite being a Jedi. Tarre even had a statue of his own which the Mandalorians erected in his honor after he died. Likewise, the Jedi also respected him enough to recover his lightsaber after his death. Speaking of which...
7 THEY POSSESSED A REALLY COOL LIGHTSABER
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/1e0bad5adbb13d70d6a423dee39f3cc8/ebe36fd9ac60bacf-ff/s540x810/dbf967c89aed72fd846df5630a3eb12f0c3aa385.jpg)
Tarre, being a unique member of the Jedi Order, simply had to distinguish himself from his space-monk peers. So, after graduating from the Jedi Academy, Tarre built himself a special kind of lightsaber. It was neither green, blue, nor purple-- it was black.
RELATED: 10 Things We Know So Far About The Mandalorian Season 1
Tarre called it the Darksaber and its shape resembled an actual saber instead of the usual popsicle light-beams most Jedi used. The coolest part was that it had a white glow but a pitch-black blade. Move over Mace Windu, Mandalorians got more swag than you. Anyway, such a unique lightsaber became a symbol of leadership among the Mandalorians; they even stole it back from the Jedi after the space-monks recovered it.
6 THEY DESTROYED THEIR OWN HOMEWORLD
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/4c097d98be19bb1ed3ab3ee39f9fc72f/ebe36fd9ac60bacf-b7/s540x810/fe57385e19a450a4a8579b29b5323c06a76fb010.jpg)
Soon after Tarre's death, the Mandalorians went back to their old ways. Warlords vied for power and waged a civil war against other warlords all the while waging another war against the Jedi. War after war on many fronts did not bode well for the Mandalorians' homeworld.
During their final struggle with the Jedi, the war caused a cataclysmic event of planetary proportion on Mandalore. This destroyed nearly half of Mandalore and turned the planet into a barren and uninhabitable white desert.
The Mandalorians only survived because they adapted and built dome cities to shield their civilizations off from the devastation. Only then did the Mandalorians gave up in their war and dreams of expansion.
5 THE SITH RULED THEM AT ONE POINT
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/c1d839f3acd256b4924ca0a1abddf25e/ebe36fd9ac60bacf-d3/s540x810/bc7eef43aebd41004ab0786c17f915ae27dd332a.jpg)
Because of their extreme capabilities of withstanding the Jedi, one would think that Mandalorians would've been a valuable asset to the Sith and they became one at one point. During the Clone Wars, Darth Maul, who was previously thought to be dead, turned out to be alive. He was then rescued and repaired by Pre Vizsla, a descendant of Tarre Vizsla himself who wanted to plunge Mandalore back to its warlike state.
RELATED: Star Wars: 10 Hysterical Palpatine Memes That Are Too Funny
Maul eventually killed Pre after the latter managed to unite the warmongering Mandalorian clans under his banner. Essentially this made Maul the effective ruler of Mandalore and the Sith managed to rule the Mandalorians. His rule was short-lived though; Maul was quickly deposed by peaceful Mandalorians who allied with the Jedi.
4 THEY ALSO HATE THE EMPIRE
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/ec6c0c1b2e23dde873ea44e5f3ad5cb8/ebe36fd9ac60bacf-c7/s540x810/51400cb7f4bff512a34cbbb1d07d116d80fbb272.jpg)
Maul did try to take Mandalore back but its current acting ruler, Bo-Katan along with the Republic's help, fought against him. The siege of Mandalore, however, was interrupted by Darth Sidious after he initiated Order 66. Maul managed to escape the carnage and his failed campaign.
Meanwhile, Bo-Katan was left as the ruler of Mandalore and refused to recognize the authority of the abruptly-formed Galactic Empire. She was momentarily replaced by the Emperor's puppet but came back to power again thanks to a young Mandalorian rebel who found the Tarre's Darksaber.
3 THEY DRESSED LIKE BOBA FETT
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/79dd9065e7fc7c082058970926283200/ebe36fd9ac60bacf-ae/s540x810/a4d86091bf86e7fa77e80ed1f726470751463108.jpg)
Now, let's talk about style. That Mandalorian uniform is simply too awe-inspiring yet mysterious at the same time to omit. Boba Fett wore it first and it was noticeably weathered and old in the original trilogy. Meanwhile, his father, Jango, wore a shinier version of the Mandalorian armor.
RELATED: Star Wars: George Lucas' 5 Best (& 5 Worst) Creative Decisions
It's arguably a more intimidating version of the Republic clone armor and the headpiece resembles the fearsome appearance of the Corinthian helmets in ancient Greece. This uniform is a staple Mandalorian armor too; it's what they use for war against the Jedi after years of adjusting their military technology and combat techniques to stand a chance against them.
2 JANGO AND BOBA ARE NOT MANDALORIANS
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/1535fd3634506a96bcf7371b047f1ece/ebe36fd9ac60bacf-d3/s540x810/1230e3ff3321ff18e8c8c1dc16e557ab561cf544.jpg)
If you haven't heard of this heartbreaking canon reveal already, then we're so sorry to tell you that it's official; both Jango Fett and his clone son Boba are not Mandalorians. That painful truth was okayed by George Lucas himself. It was revealed in episode 12, season 2 of Clone Wars where Prime Minister Almec from New Mandalore denies Jango Fett is a Mandalorian.
Turns out Jango might have just acquired his armor from a hapless Mandalorian and then went on to dress the part. Now, since Boba is an exact replica of Jango himself, he's also no Mandalorian. This leads us to another questionable fact, courtesy of George Lucas' film/TV canon choices...
1 THE CLONES AREN'T MANDALORIANS
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/57711209cc9479643647597bf0dab319/ebe36fd9ac60bacf-19/s540x810/0b3a2729e02c464e6d661bb2216a176027b6f379.jpg)
We all know that Jango Fett was chosen to be cloned due to his exceptional bounty hunter and mercenary skills. He has certainly shown that he knows how to handle the Jedi in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, especially during the fight against Obi-Wan. In all respects, such a feat is so Mandalorian; back then when we thought Jango was a Mandalorian, it made sense why he was the perfect clone template.
Turns out, he wasn't Mandalorian, and neither was Boba. That means the clones are just clones of some random seasoned human. Granted, Jango is fearsome and dangerous but making him and Boba a uniform thief (basically a fake Mandalorian) somewhat reeks of injustice. Hopefully, The Mandalorian gives us the "Boba Fett" we all want and have been waiting for.

Allen Rambles about Ashen Wolves
To my followers, sorry for posting this a second time, but I need to test something. If it helps, I edited out some of the grammar issues.
I finished up the Ashen Wolves DLC for Fire Emblem Three Houses about a week ago and man, do I have some feelings about it.
There was honestly more I disliked about it than liked, but at the same time I don’t think it was a complete waste of my time either. The fact that you can only get this DLC if you had the season pass is also something I don’t like, even if I got the pass months ago. I don’t think I could recommend this DLC save for the bonus features and extra classes in the pack, but… Well, let me break down my thoughts a bit here.
The New Classes
Let’s start with something easy like the classes. Overall I think the new classes have their utility, but are in general pretty niche. Mind you, I say this as a casual player just looking at basic utility unit and effort it takes to get them, so it’s possible the more hardcore players will say that War Monk Raphael is the new meta, but to break things down a little…
War Monk
I’m glad we finally have a female-brawling class, or at least class for females to get into, but it comes at a cost. You need a a decent rank in brawling and white magic to use this class, and very few characters have the stats for the that. This has that Mortal Savant problem of a physical or magical character grinding in stat they’re weak in to become a middling hybrid class. Granted, unlike Mortal Savant you can get these classes at level 20, but would anyone really power-level your healer in brawling just to punch things? Or spam characters like Petra or Ingrid in Faith just to have weak heals? I mean, there’s meme-ing and New Game +, but realistically this class feels pointless. Balthus’s heals were pathetic in the DLC and didn’t sell me on this being a hybrid class, or at least not a good one. You’d either get a healer with weak punches, or a fighter with weak heals. (Edit: I’ve just made Lysithea a War Cleric and it’s absolutely hilarious how busted she is with Aura Knuckles. However, that’s one New Game+ so my point still stands.) And while I’ll admit Holy Knight Ferdinand’s weak heals honestly saved me a few times on my Crimson Flower campaign, statistically it’s kind of pointless.
Trickster
Trickster is actually pretty good since it’s a mid-game class that most magic and physical classes can reach, as most magic users also have a decent to high ability in swords as well for some odd reason. Manuela finally has a class to naturally spec into around mid-game that works for her default weapon line, you could also sneak Marianne and Lysithea in there too if you wanted, but overall this class is pretty good. It’s not too niche, it can be worked into during the early and mid game, and while you do have at least unlock thief, that’s not a difficult class to spec into at all. The only real downside is wasting a intermediate certificate to unlock the thief class, and that’s not much of an issue save for time. Overall a good class.
Valkyrie and Dark Flier
Valkyrie and Dark Flyer are female-only classes in a game where I’ve already complained about gender-locked classes. That said, they’re okay. Nice to have a mid-game caster that has more than four movement, but this is still gender-locked, so I can’t have Lindhart flying around spamming warp, canto, and the like. Valkyrie also gives Lysithea something that compliments her dark magic use, but nothing else I can say aside from that. They’re glass canons. Powerful, but can’t take much of a hit. Their canto abilities make keeping them safe a lot easier than most casters.
The Ashen Wolves themselves, as units in the DLC, were a little underwhelming outside of their utility. Like I said, Bathus has weak heals, but his self-healing made him a tank… but that’s a skill most brawlers can get naturally. Yuri was the most useful thanks to his Canto Ring and Foul Play, but Constance and Hapi just felt like more mobile Lysethias, and while Lysethia is great, these maps didn’t really let them one-shot anything like their class functions want them to.
But moving on.
Story
So… a story about the secret fourth house in Fire Emblem Three Houses…
Okay, to make it short, the story is bad.
It’s not terrible, it’s not Fire Emblem Conquest levels of dumb plotholes, but it’s still bad. This game jumped some hoops make the Ashen Wolves work into the lore and story, only to stumble and fall. But before I tackle all that, let’s at least open with something nice, so…
The Good
I’m doing the good in list form because, frankly, there isn’t a lot of good to begin with, but I do want to acknowledge the good that’s in here.
Having a side story involving all 3 house leaders is a good idea. The lack of interaction between them in the main game made it hard to believe the three were friends.
The designs and personalities of the Ashen Wolves themselves are great. Everyone feels unique and don’t bleed into another character, an amazing feat given the size of the cast.
I surprisingly like Yuri quite a bit as a character, if a little annoyed by his blatant secret-keeping and obvious heel-turn later throughout the story.
Abyss in general is an idea I can get behind. Garreg Mach already had secret underground tombs and sanctuaries, so I can buy it having a secret society of undesirables underneath too, as well as protectors in the form of the Wolves.
The final boss was actually pretty fun, both in terms of challenge and mechanics… not a story detail, but it’s also something good.
The Bad
Okay… where to begin?
The actual plot stuff… dear lord.
For context, Cindered Shadows revolves around three things: the Rite of Rising, a botched resurrection ritual during the early days of Garreg Mach. The Four Apostles, four mystics with special crests that conducted the Rite of Rising and were exiled after failing to resurrect Sothis. And Byleth’s mother Sitri, a nun of the church that died soon after having Byleth who also had a secret admirer in the form of Abyss’s benefactor. All three of these points feel tacked on for the sole purpose of having a fourth house exist. The descendants of the four apostles just happening to be in the same place? Byleth’s mom just happening to have a random admirer as the main villain? The fact that a second type of resurrection ritual existing that just happened to never to be mentioned? Now, I’ve only finished Crimson Flower, the route that did the least amount of world-building and setting explanation, but even I recognize that some hoops are being jumped here. It feels like there’s a lot of world-building either being ignored or retconned so that the Four Apostles make sense within the lore. Especially since all four Ashen Wolves just happen to be descendants of the them. That’s just poor writing to me.
Yuri pulling that double heel and face-turn at the end was also dumb. Yuri being a rouge and scoundrel with secret motives is fine, that’s basically his character at a glance. However, that makes the heel-turn obvious, especially when it happens within the last three chapters of the side story. Again, it just feels like bad writing to have the obvious rouge character turn on you at the last minute. Yes, there were some hints that he was playing both sides, but still. The shady guy being shady isn’t really much of a plot twist, and while that isn’t bad in itself the fact that the writers try to frame it as clever, or at least as an honest surprise just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
Overall, it feels like what was going to be a simple story about Abyss and the people there turned into something more complicated for the sake of giving it more importance, and that irritates me.
And the gameplay? The maps themselves? Let’s talk about that next.
The Maps and Gameplay
There’s a video by a Bismix that summarizes my feelings perfectly:
“So how was Cindered Shadows?”
“Foul Play was cool.”
And you know what? Foul Play was cool. A special movement skill that swaps places with a unit at decent range. Combined with the Canto ring it was a damn handy tool to move around Edelgard and Lindhart. But aside from that, I have a question for the Old Guard of Fire Emblem. The folks that have been playing this since that old GBA title that featured Eliwood.
Do you like getting kicked in the dick? Repeatedly?
Because that’s what these levels felt like. A map full of Assassins with high Avoid, magic users with high damage, and every unit having Silver Weapons. Is there a reason for this aside from challenge? Is there a reason to be this disadvantaged after chapter 3? And the reinforcement, don’t even get me started on the reinforcements. Chapter 2, 3, and 4 were complete bullshit because of them. Three waves of reinforcements and the Death Knight? A 1-in-3 chance of summoning reinforcements with a stats debuff for pulling the wrong lever? An escape map that features an entire army of reinforcements at the very last section? There’s challenge, and then there’s this.
I’ll ask again Old Guard, do you like getting kicked in the dick repeatedly?
Because whenever I see nonsense like that I remember the complaints about current Fire Emblem games being too easy. And while I’ll admit to not being a hardcore fan of this series, I doubt that the game was meant to induce so many unfair advantages and rage-inducing moments toward the enemy for the sake of challenge. I had to set this game down at least five times while playing through this DLC. I don’t find it a challenge to face a mountain of enemies that only four characters on my team can realistically fight, and only 3 of them actual able to hit said enemies. I don’t see feeding half the map to Byleth, Dimitri, and Balthus because they’re the few units that can take the hits and get kills to be skillful. I don’t get how spamming reinforcements after a long and difficult map is adding challenge.
The only map that had an interesting gimmick was the final boss. Their map-wide attack displaced your entire army and summoned two phantoms that would be sacrificed to heal the boss at the end of your next turn if you didn’t kill them in time. However, the phantoms could be killed by most of your party in one or two rounds, and they dropped heal potions for your party to share and use to prep for the next phase. That map was a matter of prioritizing which units to tank the phantoms damage, trade blows, heal with the potions obtained, and get into position to do major damage to the boss when it was on cooldown. It was fun once I learned the pattern and a challenge as you couldn’t just spam the same units to take out the phantoms due to the party displacement. It was fun, interesting, and required on-the-fly strategy, the only map to really do so.
This… is leading me down something off-topic, so I’ll simply say that adding challenge in a turn-based RPG should always be based on gimmicks and special rules to keep the gameplay interesting, rarely should raising numbers be the main way of adding challenge.
With that out the way I’ll get to my last point, which is…
Small Nitpicks that Only Bug Allen
I’d usually state this portion first, but this DLC had so many bigger issues that I feel it’d be best to use my nitpicks as a cooldown rather than a warm-up. Thankfully my nitpicks are more so my preferences than actual nitpicks, as most small issues I have with this DLC are issues that came from the original. That said:
I feel like Ashe and Hilda should had been switched out for Mercedes and Raphael. We really needed at least one more decent healer in that group, and as I said before, Bathus and Yuri’s heals are pathetically weak. Either that or Lindhart should have had the Warp spell. Raph would had another decent tank that wasn’t as much of a glass canon as Hilda. Yes, we had Edelgard, but I would had preferred Raph do the tanking.
Jeralt and Sothis should had been involved in this DLC. I don’t care that they were trying to keep the canon point ambiguous, it should had happened. If Byleth wasn’t going to react to their mother’s dead corpse then I sure as hell would had liked to see either Sothis or Jeralt do so. Again, I don’t like Byleth, but that lack of emotion on their part really kills moments like this.
I would had liked it if they didn’t lock skills. Chapter 3 and 4 wouldn’t had been so suffering if Lindhart could warp Edelgard a few times. Again, getting kicked in the dick isn’t my idea of fun or challenging.
So, with all that out of the way I think I can move on to my last point, which is:
In the Future
Like I usually say, I find it pointless to try and “fix” a story that’s already been told, but I see nothing wrong with make suggestions for the future.
That said I’d like to see the next story DLC focus more on the culture and world of Fodlan. We only know about these places by name and their students, not much else. A DLC that covers the five-year gap would be nice, something that doesn’t have Byleth in it would be nice too. Fire Emblem Fates had a few Corrin-less DLC maps, and Fire Emblem Echoes had some side stories without Alm and Celica. I think it could work. A story DLC on the church and specifically Sothis would be great too. A story map that showed how Dimitri lost his eye. A prologue map showing all the houses meeting up before Byleth came into the picture. A playable map of the Battle of Red Cliffs, things like that.
If we get more classes in future DLC then please no more gender-locked classes is all I have to say. Anyway, that’s all I got for now. Maybe now I’ll actually finish the Gacha Rambling…
Or maybe I’ll do a thesis on Granbelm, which ever comes first.
