HAWK fails at a postapocalyptic future

I’m waiting for my copy of HAWK from the library, but from what I’ve heard from other readers, it sounds like it hasn’t changed much since the ARC. That’s frustrating. Partly because there were so many plot holes.

In Maximum Ride Forever, the world has been hit by a meteor, and then gone through not only that fallout but numerous weapons like a lab-created plague and nuclear bombs. Major cities are flooded, or cratered, or experiencing nuclear fallout. A significant part of the population is dead. We meet only a handful of adults. The vast majority of survivors who we see are children, and quite a few of those are mutants. The ending features a battle between child armies. 

In MRF, we are given to believe that these are the people on whom the rebuilt future rests. 

In HAWK, we get a completely different fallout.

Take all of that stuff from MRF and add in a four-year-long nuclear winter. The surviving child soldiers do have resources and can work on planning, but all the characters we know of go into underground bunkers to survive.

Eleven years after that – sixteen years total since the extinction-level event - there are multiple cities full of people of all ages. These cities feature skyscrapers, massive drug labs, evil science facilities, tanks, cars, guns with government chips in them, paved streets, plumbing. Film studios, movie cameras, animated cartoons! There is a hidden canyon city with houses carved into the walls, which one imagines would have taken a very long time, but which is apparently quite well-established. There are doctors and nurses. Where did they get their degrees? Are they all in their thirties and younger, or were they adults who we didn’t meet in MRF? 

It’s difficult to tell the ratio of mutants to humans, but from what we see, mutants are occasional but rare. (So much for Itex’s plan to have their mutants rule the world.)

On to the social status quo. Now, bear in mind that Hawk never got an education and has lived in one place for as long as she can remember. Okay: Hawk does not know what the ocean is. She does not know what a squirrel is. She believes that horses and pandas are mythical creatures, and she talks about “Crismins” instead of Christmas.

More widely, everyone, including Americans, has adopted the metric system, people talk about the “gods” and some worship statues. Okay. Fine, I guess. I can even sort of take Max’s inspirational speech reminding the citizens that they deserve to be treated like human beings.

But it’s difficult to tell how much of this is Hawk being clueless and growing up in a hellhole of a city, and how much is meant to be genuine worldbuilding of “See! See how different this dark, gritty future is! See how much has been forgotten! Our main character has heard only a garbled version of the word ‘Christmas!’”

Except that it has been only sixteen years since the world ended. It has only been eleven years since they really had the chance to start rebuilding.  I know we only see two cities and one prison island, and it’s hinted there’s more of a connection to the previous world in the free city of Tetra, but this is ridiculous.

Technology, infrastructure and population should be low. Connection to the previous world’s pop culture and society should be high. There are adults running around for whom sixteen years is only a fraction of their lives. There would still be teenagers who would have been born before the apocalypse.

Instead, the book treats things as if it has been much longer. High population, infrastructure and technology. Low connection to the previous world. 

After sixteen years, things have changed so much that a girl born at the pivotal point does not know the word Christmas. She does not know what the ocean is; she has never heard anyone talk about islands, or cruises, or going to the beach. In a world where TV is a constant presence, she thinks horses are made up. But Christmas is what really gets me. Look at how much Christmas takes over stores and media around December. Are you telling me that in under two decades, people forgot the word Christmas?! They have TV and cartoons, and in the past decade and a half, nobody has ever cranked up some old carols?? 

After all this, I want to try a quick worldbuilding of what the Maximum Ride future might look like. This is just spitballing; there are any number of directions it could go.

What HAWK could look like if the future followed a sensible pattern:

To begin: after natural disasters, plague, nuclear bombings, and a four-year nuclear winter, you’d have a vastly shrunken population. Most of the characters seen in Maximum Ride Forever are orphaned children. There will be huge gaps in the age population. I’ll hypothesize that most adults died in the plague. By the time of HAWK, you probably don’t see anyone over 65, and even that might be pushing it.

On the other hand, I expect there will be a huge emphasis on repopulating the planet. The survival of the human race is still in question. Let’s say there was a baby boom right after the nuclear winter ended and people started leaving their bunkers. You see a lot of kids around 10-11 years old. Hawk will hardly ever meet anyone her age; she was born in a patch of time when pretty much nobody was having babies. There are no abusive orphanages. Children are far too treasured. Even if death rates are high and orphans are common, there will be people anxiously collecting up those orphans and raising them in a safe place. Hawk’s orphanage could still be a weird place, but the kids wouldn’t be disappearing or taken off to evil laboratories. Although—more on that in a minute.

By the time of HAWK, the Apocalypse’s shadow still looms; anyone 20 or older can remember where they were and what they were doing That Day. They reminisce to each other or to their children about the old days. Hawk can be skeptical, as in canon, that some of these stories are true. Enough people that the world was struggling with overpopulation? How is that possible?

The survivors are people who went down into bunkers. Let’s say there were bunkers scattered all over the world. You’ll get a lot of wacky survivalist types, and also probably some of those scientists and major businessmen who were talking about the end of the world in the older MR books, and who could afford to build bunkers. Speaking of which: Himmel! This was the main villain’s bunker that the Flock and their army of child soldiers ended up moving into. Chock-full of advanced technology.

The groups in these bunkers would have lived together for four years in close quarters, relying on each other to survive (or maybe fighting to the death, I don’t know). Groups like the one in Himmel will probably be incredibly close-knit. Even after the nuclear winter is over, it will make sense for people to use those bunkers as bases. Towns, and one day cities, will grow up around them. Some people may still live primarily in underground apartments.

Maybe (I could be pushing it here) there are some people who stayed out of the bunkers and ended up in a hunter-gatherer caveman-type existence. If they survived, this could be an important allyship or a source of tension with the bunker-dwellers. Do they join up? Do they keep their distance?

Major cities do not exist (so no “City of the Dead”). The older cities are uninhabitable and being reclaimed by nature, long stripped of resources even if they aren’t just piles of rubble. Most people are not concerned about rebuilding them right now, and there probably aren’t even enough surviving workers with the right knowledge; a lot of professions will have to be re-developed from the ground up. Suffice to say there are no new skyscrapers going up.

The immediate concern will be food. Agriculture will have suffered from the nuclear winter. Some people are working on traditional farms, but we do have that advanced technology from Himmel, and the surviving scientists will be in high demand for developing new food sources.

I’m thinking of lots of farming communities centered around the safety of the bunkers. They will spread outwards only gradually. And there was a large population of mutant “Aquatics”, so new towns may not necessarily be built on land. We could have towns built on or under the water, and farms focused on fish and seaweed.

Mutants make up a major percentage of the surviving population. There’s no more of scientists coming after mutants and picking them off. Mutants are the scientists now, in many cases; the mutant kids growing up in Himmel would have been studying the resources there and learning to build things necessary for the new world.

However, there’s a possibility of prejudice against mutants. Perhaps some of the human survivors, particularly from other bunkers, resent the mutants or see them as tied to the Apocalypse. The question of reproduction and having the human race survive? Maybe some people want humanity to be “pure.” They don’t want bird or fish DNA floating around in there. 

There will likely be a problem of ruffian bands who try to raid these settlements for food. Sometimes settlements raid each other. There may also be corrupt administrations, or gangs who offer “protection.”

There isn’t the same kind of worldwide connection. Although they certainly have the technology for long-distance communication, it will take a long time to rebuild the infrastructure and carry it all over the world. The postal system is gone. The transportation system is gone. Instead of booking a flight at the airport, you ask your buddy Susan if she can give you a ride in her crop duster to the next settlement. 

There are no huge, high-tech prisons, either. Nobody’s got the time or resources to devote to that, and there simply aren’t enough prisoners to fill up something like that. Prisons in this world? I’m picturing big old pits like in The Dark Knight Rises.

So here’s a shot at reworking the beginning of HAWK: Hawk’s parents leave her with a babysitter in a farming community, but while they’re away, it’s hit by raiders. In the destruction, along with food, the raiders also take kids to sell them. Hawk ends up in a weird orphanage obsessed with raising the new generation of the world and ensuring humanity’s survival. However, one of the administrators is bigoted against mutants, and when it’s discovered that Hawk is a mutant, she’s put aside with the other "non-ideal” kids, who are treated like servants. The orphanage might be under the “protection” of a gang - the Paters. Pietro can even still be around—except please less boring and maybe with a name that doesn’t sound like a tongue twister—and he might be a rare kid born around the same time as Hawk, maybe a year older, whose parents made it through the Apocalypse and kept their infant son alive because of their wealth.

That’s something I could have accepted. I can’t accept smacking Hawk in the middle of a generic dystopian city that seems a century or further into the future, when it should be only sixteen.

Feminism & Gender Equality

Did you know that eight out of the top ten countries have a larger female gender population compared to the male gender yet the percentage of women within the workforce was at 28% since 1959 up until 2020? That means for every 1 male, there are 7 females to that one male, making the population higher for women. It is sad to report considering I have been a part of that percentage since 2000.  To think that an entire race of extraordinary females for more than just one reason are not on the same working tier as man, even though woman represent a great deal larger within the population compared to men is astonishing. I know what you are thinking, it is due to our past ancestors that made the corporate world, “a man’s world” however, so much has changed in today's society to encourage women that they are just as equal to man in more than one way!

I, for one, grew up in a “both my parents work” home situation, which ultimately left my brother and I with a lot of babysitters. For many other people like me, that can be normal right? Well, what I didn’t know for the longest, was that my mom was working as a Merrill Lynch Financial Advisor managing over 500 million dollars in assets which ranks her in the top one half percent of all females and more importantly males in her industry. Ironically she has been doing this for over 34 years and the percentage of women who are at her level in the investment business has never moved past 15%. Making her one of only 200 other women in the entire industry at her level(which made her job an everyday event to consistently prove herself to the men around her.) She picked a career that was based on meritocracy, so there was very little subjectivity to her advancement. Basically, she was responsible for her own success, the harder she worked, the better she did. This inspired me at an early age because my mom never seemed to think that whatever she was searching for, shooting for or hoping for was unreachable. If anything it never even crossed her mind to not work as hard as she could to be within her industry and have the reputation she has built up to today. She has made it her mission to bring up other women to follow in her path. Okay, so you may ask well how does this even relate to our class? Well, part of the reason I was so interested in taking the class in the first place was the title, which is, “Woman’s Writing Worldwide”, which stood out to me because of the first word. It stood out because of that five letter & two syllable word that can make or break a human coming into the world. For others, within third world countries, like the ones we have been reading about, that word defined one from the jump and almost pre-decided that female's destiny. As much as I would like to say it is different in the United States, it is similar in the way that being a woman in today’s culture is a huge ever-growing adjustment because men are only making it harder for us to speak our truths and claim our spots within the working class. Trust me, I may sound like a hater on the male race, but I am eternally grateful to a lot of them for making me the person I am today, however if men truly understood woman, like we do them, the world would be a much fairer place because it is not a competition all the time like men tend to make it to be.

One person that spoke volumes to this exact subject was Meghan Markle, in her speech that specifically dealt with her first encounter with being a woman’s right advocate at the early age of 11. In that speech, she essentially told the audience that she was watching a TV show in grade school, when a commercial came on for a dish liquid with the tagline, “woman all around America are fighting greasy pots and pans,” when two boys in her class quickly said after that commercial, “yeah that is where women belong, in the kitchen.” She was so bothered with this that she wrote to the first lady, then Hilary Clinton, Linder Elerby, Gloria Albred and the soap manufacturer, Proctor and Gamble to change the tagline to, “people all over America are fighting pots and pans.” When in fact, a month later they in fact did change the tagline and opened the doorways for Markle to really understand the magnitude of her actions within this topic. She then goes on to even say that, “women need a seat at the table, they need an invitation to be seated there, and in some cases when a seat is unavailable then they have to make their own. It is said that girls with dreams become women with vision. May we empower each other to carry out such a vision because it is not enough to simply talk about equality and it is not enough to simply believe in it, one must work at it. Let us work at it together, starting now.” I absolutely loved her entire story because it really hit home for me who was mesmerized by her willingness to stand up and say something. Without that willingness from women such as her, women as an entire race will never have a seat at the table. I am thankful to her and for the blessed opportunity to come across that story which inspired me to start a club chapter of CHAARG(changing health, attitude, actions to recreate girls) to encourage women to speak their truths, focus on themselves and be inspired by the powerful woman around them to step up and not only prioritize their mental health & wellness but their eating, their exercise, their self care, their mental health and overall happiness.

Another important factor to add, is that it has been observed in women's fight for equality in the workforce,  that there are a lot of women that fall into the category of being a part of the “sandwich generation.” This generation of professional working women have been tasked with both caregiving for their children and their aging parents. This has caused breaks within their career paths and deferred promotions. This is particularly felt within the wealth gap of income disparity between men and women. Recently, I have noticed a corporate trend towards improving this disparity. Corporations are offering more flexible work hours to accommodate these “sandwich generation” working mothers.

One speaker that really spoke volumes to this exact subject was the Msimang TED talk, where she described a time in her life where she had something taken from her by the opposite gender and felt for the first time the extreme difference between a boy’s perspective and a girl’s perspective. A great quote from our actual syllabus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie was, “The problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue but that they are incomplete. They make one story be the only story.” I enjoyed this quote because both the story by Msimang and the quote by Adichie, touch upon a common goal, equality in every form. Another element that really moved me within Msimang’s TED Talk was her inner passion for storytelling and really trying to capture what makes a good story. I also was really inspired by the TED Talk by Dalia Mogahed, a religious muslim that spoke heavily on the idea of Muslims within America. Although her topic wasn’t exactly about gender equality but more so about racism in general, she spoke about a time in her life when she felt embarrassed to not only be a muslim but also a female muslim. Her story about being scared for her life after the 9/11 attacks, was the first time in her life, she said, that she was afraid to be her true self. I felt for her in this way that I too, felt similar when walking down a city street by myself as a young adult female. Although the two are still very different, in the moment while watching her speak about her story, this was the first image that popped into my mind.

Most importantly, I enjoyed the TED Talk by Kavita Ramdas, with her extraordinary opener, which was: “ Given my TED profile, you might be expecting that I'm going to speak to you about the latest philanthropic trends -- the one that's currently got Wall Street and the World Bank buzzing -- how to invest in women, how to empower them, how to save them. Not me. I am interested in how women are saving us. They're saving us by redefining and re-imagining a future that defies and blurs accepted polarities, polarities we've taken for granted for a long time, like the ones between modernity and tradition, First World and Third World, oppression and opportunity.” This got me thinking more and more about gender equality as a whole and just how important and influential women are in society. Countries such as China, took a very long time to find this out, as many of new born baby girls were sold to the States for money because in their culture, “boys were the only ones that could work to bring the family up, girls are an embarrassment and are only here for one thing, reproduction.” However, after several years, they grew to know that they ended up needing more women because they were running out of women to bear children, hence the population drop in 2019 into 2020.

To combat that however, it has been proven through the last century that intellectually women are naturally more nurturing & emotionally smarter than men, just like the saying that “women develop maturity faster than men do”. So women tend to outshine men in industries such nursing.  However, men tend to rely more heavily on their physical strength in order to obtain certain jobs that are not typically where women fit into the picture such as construction and engineering. I, for one, have never viewed it like that because I have always believed that no matter the race or ethnicity, age, gender, religion, sexuality or financial standing, everyone deserves to work a job they love in any industry and that all judgement should be shoved out the window without reason.

In conclusion, I believe in the strength of women as a whole race to be able to one day never have to speak of women's rights. I envision a time within my life that women will have a seat at the table, they will be heard, understood and most importantly treated equal to men. I believe it starts with women empowering other women first and then men following that trend.

as far as im aware, everything up to the point where we beat the game happened without deviations from the alpha timeline? so this is what rose has talked about as a ‘terminal timeline’, or ‘post-canon’, or whatever the hell that is supposed to mean

we got to earth-c, and i settled in the troll kingdom because trolls are cool, dave and karkat were in the neighborhood, and the caverns are close by so i can visit rose and kanaya speedily as well! i still do have my old tower out on an island, with my workshop and garden, but i almost never sleep in it, too far away and isolated from everyone...

then one day i found this old active server in the furthest ring keeping tumblr active and i thought, hey, why not have some fun? ;D

as for the others...

my darling sis june egbert! she lives in the consort kingdom, but has been thinking about relocating elsewhere lately! she went through a rough patch right after the game, unsure of what to do and full of all sorts of doubts and questions, but shes doing a lot better nowadays! specially now that terezi is back, shes been a lot more peppy and hanging around with the lalondes particularly!

rose rose rose rose~ happily married to her wife kanaya, duh, but that doesnt make her any less of a flirty cutie! a while back she got really sick for a bit, and weve been keeping an eye on her just in case it happened again, but its been all good ever since! she helps kanaya at the caverns a bunch, which makes her schedule busy busy... and you didnt hear this from me, buuuut words out on the street that she and kanaya may be warming to the idea of having a kid! <3 well see how that goes!

one cool dude~ daves a little bit of a shut-in honestly! and honestly i dont blame him? he must be tired after all the timeline and time travel shenanigans, so he spends a good chunk of his time hanging out in his and karkats house! hes kind of awkward about opening up with feelings and stuff, and ive been trying to nudge him to be more open for a while! but with all the craziness thats been going down lately, and more people coming and going and getting together, hes starting to consider things he hadnt before~ hopefully, some specific someones? ;)

janey! my uh... ecto-mom, technically, although we see each other more like cousins than anything else! she still owns crockercorp, but ever since jasprose has been around, she has been spending a lot more time at home and just hanging out with her friends, which really, sounds a lot healthier than the big business thing she had going on a while back! she enjoys teaching me baking stuff, but doesnt have much patience for my decorating skills ;p

grandpa! and grandson technically, hehe, jakes kind of a weird case, hes a mixture of a shut-in, a celebrity and an adventurer! he can spend up to weeks at a time without leaving his manor, but then hell have full weeks of interviews and hiking, and thats not to say anything of when he and dirk put out another episode or two of their dumb comedy talkshow... hes often busy with stuff, but hes still a good pal and can clear his schedule in seconds if we need him for something!

one sweet nb dude! rox really is... something else, really! fun to tag along at a party, fun to chill at home playing games, fun to talk about more serious stuff and open up with him, he really is just solid as they come! hes been hanging out a lot more with june since she got out of her depressive slump, but sometimes i wonder if junebug finds weird to get flirty with roxy, considering im pretty sure we made out in front of her at some point or two... hehehe

dirk! if daves a bit of a shut-in, hes a shut-in times two, which is weird because youd think someone stuck in post-apocalyptic earth for so long would want to hang out more? not to say he DOESNT, though! hes around jake often enough, and keeps close to jane, roxy and dave specially! we dont see each other too often, but we HAVE been messing around with robots and planning out to upgrade our respective self-bots for funsies!

aradia! we only met briefly in dreams for the longest time, but i knew already that she was a riot! she came with terezis group after she finally found vriska, and seems pretty happy just... kind of... being around and watching shenanigans ensue! i actually dont know where she lives, but she drops by occasionally, because im apparently pretty ‘fun’... cant say i disagree ;)

sollux is blind, and not dead, and WILL kick you in the shins if you keep prying about how exactly he ended up like that, which is fair enough! he spends a good chunk of his time with aradia, and im not sure if theyre dating or not...? but hes been around the other trolls a bunch! specially kanaya, apparently theyre good friends that go way back! i guess they both DO style their hair similarly, with the side spike thingies...

the other half of the dave-kat duo! swooooon~ really though, i cant remember the last time i said “dave” or “karkat” without talking about the other shortly after... buuut theyre just roomies, and hell get awkward and grumpy if you even so slightly IMPLY otherwise, despite the fact everyone knows they fall asleep leaning against each other during friday movie night! roooolling my eyes~ with the rest of the living trolls having arrived, hes been a lot more willing to go outside, which im glad for! its healthy to get some fresh air from time to time, and specially hang out with friends!

oh-la-la, miss maryam-lalonde herself! kanayas the matriarch of the caverns, and quite the busy gal, having taken it upon herself to supervise her entire species reproduction and well-being... in my opinion, she needs a good vacation from time to time, and to be less of a workaholic! >:o ive been helping her occasionally in the caverns, and as of late weve begun trying to mess around with ectobiology for some troll-human crossing experiments with... not good results so far... but hey, rome wasnt built in a day!

terezis back, yes! after spending YEARS out there looking for vriska, she managed to find her and come back, the madwoman! personally im not sure why anyone would go to such lengths for... her... but also, its not my bond, not my place to speak, she obviously really loves her a bunch! with vriska no longer lost in the middle of the furthest ring, shes started to catch up with everything going on with earth-c, and i think shes really going to like being around! specially with how much june and the rest have missed her ;)

troublemaker extraordinaire herself! shes... well, shes vriska, im pretty sure she stole that eyepatch from sollux? so you just know she up to no good already >:/ speaking of her eyepatch, im not sure WHY shes wearing it? whatever kinda wound she got, she doesnt like mentioning it, despite bragging about defeating english at every chance she gets! terezi says they found her popping in and out of consciousness in the furthest ring with some messy wounds, and that shed probably been hovering out there after the fight for years... doesnt seem to have humbled her in the slightest <.<

callieeeee! theyre super sweet and wonderful but also really shy and awkward! they live with roxy but manage to outdo dirk in terms of shut-in-ness... they also totally like roxy but is unsure about approaching those feelings considering the whole species thing and whatever, ive been trying to get them to open up for a while now! weve written fanfic together and drawn grids, so i can definitely tell theres some attraction there, even if theyre afraid of acting upon it just yet <3

jaspie is roses bane, and the one cat that made me get used to their smell enough that i dont bark at them instantly anymore! im pretty sure she crashes at janes often, and is just as outgoing and flirty as i am around earth-c parties and bars, which is saying something honestly! i wont let her dethrone me as the party god, though >:)

and finally davepeta! theyre staying with june for the time being until they can get settled around and see what they want to do here! theyve also dropped by dave and karkats a bunch, which i most certainly dont mind! i definitely appreciate some help in bringing a romantic vibe into those twos lives~ ;o

and thats about it! theres also the nannasprites and tavrosprite and arquius, but they pop by so sporadically and rarely that i dont know what theyre doing a majority of the time... we lost track of gamzee after the session so hopefully hes totally gone, and we havent heard any message from caliborn in years... and with the furthest ring broken and the black hole sealed, leaving a weird white empty space right in the middle of reality, im not sure what our chances of bringing back the other trolls are :( but still, we keep living on happily over here and having our fun slice of life ending together!

id say after everything weve gone through, we deserve a big break, dont we? hehehe <3

"She's just living in the world she made for every woman" I'm sorry, wtf? One person trying to alleviate their dysphoria and survive in a sexist world did not singlehandedly create patriarchy. He's another victim. He's not the fucking root of all evil. So much for pretending to be "MERFs, not TERFs," huh?

I’ve gotten very interesting pushback on the case of this transman’s desire to join a sorority at Northwestern.

So let me do a bit of pushback of my own.

I didn’t say she was the root of all evil. But let me tell you a story about a young lesbian (me) in the 1990s. After many years of the usual drag and gender play of the gay community, there was a wave of transitions that swept across my butch friends. Suddenly, it seemed, I was the only lesbian in my social circle who still identified as a woman. My friends were all taking T, using male or neutral pronouns, and telling me they were men. (They also spent several years telling me I was a man too, but that’s another story).

But all these ‘transguys’ still hung around with and dated lesbians. Lesbians went along with it. Then they wanted their female partners to use male pronouns and pass as a straight couple. Some lesbians still went along with that. I even know one who used reproductive technology to transfer her donor fertilized eggs to their female partner so she could bear ‘his’ baby. Believe it or not, it’s apparently possible to find lesbians who will put up with almost anything. 

Anyway, there were several moralizing articles referencing ‘our shared history’ together, and warnings to be more inclusive, and so, events that were for lesbians specifically, or women in general, were put under enormous pressure to be open to transmen. And thus, the parade of those super-inclusive ‘women and trans’ events and groups was  born. It was only a few years later that the men who identified as women showed up - they were trans events now, right? - first in a trickle and then in a flood. And eventually the ‘transwomen’ arrived not under the category of ‘trans’ but as ‘women.’ A couple years after that, there was new pressure to get rid of the transmen, and have femme groups and women’s groups, except this time it included men and excluded women who identified as men.

And here I am a few years after that, where people openly ask ‘where are all the lesbians?’, as if it’s not totally clear that we are back in the closet and our communities have been colonized. We weakened our boundaries, and people rushed into to exploit it, but the trans and non-binary females should have realized that when that happens, the men will always end up in control. We can’t those lesbian spaces back, we are quite literally outnumbered within our own ‘community’.

Women have been fighting for public women-only space for centuries. When women cede ground, we don’t get it back without another fight. But we yield it with the best of intentions and finest female socialization. We want to be nice. And people who know that will always know to ask for whatever they want from us.

Trans-identified females are the scruffy, non-threatening mascots of trans activism. Whether it’s high school washrooms or military service, these legal precedents of ‘inclusiveness’ are almost always set by females. (It’s not accidental, by the way, that this transman doesn’t even come close to passing. That’s part of the ‘reason’ this is supposed to make sense. Passing, bearded transmen are used for arguments to access men’s facilities.) But even when the precedents are set by males, the space that is yielded is women’s - and that’s exactly what happened here (I’ll explain later).

Women do everyone these favors, but they are never returned. This woman, who can’t unbend enough to tick ‘female’ on a form, wants women to overlook her self-declared identity.

Also: Here are the services available to trans students at Northwestern. You’ll notice they include an All Gender Housing that “provides housing options that take into consideration varying identities and preferences”. This woman has all the amenities needed for university life. Why is it so important for a woman who identifies as a man, and is transitioning to become a man, to get into a sorority?

Why not address the supposed issue of transphobic violence in men’s sororities? I mean, anyone with eyes can look at the picture and see she’d be at risk being a female in an all-male residence. (Funny, these articles don’t mention the all-gender housing options, do they?)

Or why not start a trans chapter for Greek life? If her goals are “experience a candlelight ceremony, wear Greek letters or have a mentoring relationship with an older sorority member“   then she can get off her ass and start one, just like women had to wedge open the door to university life inch by painful inch.

Or better yet, why not say something about the transwomen who’ve already been down this road, hammered down these doors and already changed the international groups that govern these sororities and frats by rewriting their bylaws or guidelines, “which often state that recruits must be women or identify as women.” If radfems had been allowed to write the bylaws, yeah ABSOLUTELY - membership would have been defined to apply to females. Instead, her trans buddies got membership defined by gender identity. Isn’t trans activism great? These are the values she is upholding. These are her friends. This is the world she wanted to be made.

Take it up with them.

“A coup d’état is sanctioned as it were in the opinion of the people if it is repeated” – says Hegel in the “Introduction to The Philosophy of History”. This opinion is a serious stake, for with the sanction in question the history leaps forward. “Thus, Napoleon was defeated twice and twice the Bourbons were driven out. Through repetition, what at the beginning seemed to be merely accidental and possible, becomes real and established”. Then we see Marx opening his “Eighteenth Brumaire” with famous “Hegel remarks somewhere that all great world-historic facts and personages appear, so to speak, twice. He forgot to add: the first time as tragedy, the second time as farce”. There’s a strong drive, in other words, in the world of the mortals to “get real” by means of caricature. The event is not enough, nor is the myth. A debasement is needed, be it only through a remark – found passim, with dignity of at most a gossip – which nonetheless points at something that's, seemingly, grounded and, apparently, operative. Con-firmed. Now – could we perhaps, in a provisionary way, take the psychoanalytical endeavour as means to flesh out our exaggerations? swarming, yet not palpable? Like a cartoonist who picks on the recognizable and leads it to the constatation “that’s true!”, and one that is palatable at that? Here’s a pick from the very discourse. Bracha Ettinger remarks somewhere that the deep model revealed in Lacan’s exposition of the lamella myth is the libidinal model of subject versus object – since the maternal in it, for a subject, is an object, and her body a partial object – a setup Ettinger aims to “shake a bit” with the matrixial approach. Neologisms are among the means put to the task. But also questions: is the basic human erotic tendency towards the object? or is it towards linking with objects? or is it perhaps towards the linkage itself? „What we miss is not an object but a type of linking”. This resounds with Aaron Schuster’s remark, made elsewhere, that what we’re lacking is not an object of desire but the very ground from which we could, finally, desire. The surplus value of these remarks lies, paradoxically, in grounding the elusive nature of that weird concept which is lamella, rendering an organ whose function is to go further than the body’s limit (through collapsing the boundaries of the individual autonomy). A closer inspection reveals a question that’s still, in its core, Lacanian – that is Freudian – only that now it is pushed – and pushed again, mind – into the farcical dimension. For the sake of the argument we use the term “caricature" in a non-partisan, if benevolent, colouring. Exaggeration of a model’s features buttons up our understanding, prepares us to embody the concept; to face it really. Ettinger is careful enough to prepare the ground before making us face her own exaggerations, like, say, „borderlinking”, or „borderspacing”. She takes heed of Freud’s lines in „Beyond the Pleasure Principle”, based on Plato/Aristophanes caricature, which Lacan will then himself caricaturize in his delicious man-omelette myth. It’s where Freud arises the case of death instinct and, being troubled by its discovery, he asks how could we possibly postulate this. He points at the „life instincts already operating in the simpliest organism” – this amoeboid which we will later find turned into lamella – speaking of a “conjugation, which works counter to the course of life and makes the task of ceasing to live more difficult” and about death instincts “associated from the very first with life instincts”, admission of which forces us to work upon an equation “with two unknown quantities”, addressing, as Freud himself does, science, philosophy and poetry simultaneously. Here we’re groping in “darkness into which not so much as a ray of a hypothesis has penetrated”. The darkness is called sexuality. Nothing more than a split in the unified being. Like, we may finally pronounce it, literature. “In quite a different region, it is true, we do meet with such a hypothesis; but it is of so fantastic a kind, a myth rather than a scientific explanation, that I should not venture to produce it here, were it not that it fulfils precisely the one condition whose fulfilment we desire. For it traces the origin of an instinct to a need to restore an earlier state of things". That’s it. The stage is all set now. Enters Plato. In the “Symposium” we find the split between the male and female, and the union of the two. That theory “which Plato put into the mouth of Aristophanes (...) deals not only with the origin of the sexual instinct but also with the most important of its variations in relation to its object”. So much for Freud. From here onwards Ettinger will lead us towards her border, introducing, by the way, new characters, inviting us to follow the hint given us by the poet-philosopher, and [still Freud] “venture upon the hypothesis that living substance at the time of its coming to life was torn apart”, but [and now Ettinger] “not torn apart between male and female (and you see how lovely and Deleuzian this is)”, but [Freud again] “into small particles, which have ever since endeavoured to reunite through the sexual instincts”. What we have here are not two human beings trying to reunite, but the particles – and that’s very subrealistic, in Ettinger’s terms – those different underground particles – whose desire, moreover, to reunite, does not correspond to our desire to live our life in the world. “They’re doing their own thing and this is frightening – this lamella – you can find it everywhere doing its work, but it’s not my work”. And we’re finally in the psychoanalytical imperative, aren’t we. As Ettinger underscores, Freud doesn’t take it to the place where these particles would like to communicate between different figures. In his take the basic arrow would be the desire between different cells, of different amoeba, to become more amoeba, and then “create a border around them and, little by little, we have creatures that defend themselves through their boundaries; and we are the collection of these particles and so on”. The arrow that Ettinger offers is pointing to another level: “when I talk about the matrixial (...) these particles are sustaining their life instinct and so on, but [can the separate collections of these particles] be imagined [as not having to] fight one another in order to exist but already filtering the transconnectedness, the crossinscription”. But here, as Freud would put it, the moment has come for breaking off. Asking: was our primordial state a caricature of sex? We are repetition of amoeba and amoeba is tragedy of ours, forced to copulate. Let’s take a bypass here. „Real humanism”, says Marx, “has no more dangerous enemy in Germany than spiritualism or speculative idealism, which substitutes “self-consciousness” or the '”spirit” for the real individual man and with the evangelist teaches: “It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing.” Needless to say, this incorporeal spirit is spiritual only in its imagination. What we are combating in Bauer's criticism is precisely speculation reproducing itself as a caricature. We see in it the most complete expression of the Christian-Germanic principle, which makes its last effort by transforming "criticism" itself into a transcendent power”. This excerpt from “The Holy Family” seem to admit another property of the blunt reproduction/repetition – the need to fight it. But maybe in a way a sculptor struggles with the material at hand. Thus “the more completely Critical Criticism (the criticism of the “Literatur-Zeitung”) distorts reality into an obvious comedy through philosophy, the more instructive it is”. The problem however arises with a strange inversion that may be observed in the course of analysis, that we could term “who caricaturizes whom?”. There’s change of vectors occurring when the caricature, the set of pronouncements on the face of the object, reveals the vital obsessions of the caricaturist. Rebecca Comay in her lecture “Hegel remarks somewhere...” speaks of Marx “outhegelianizing” Hegel, i.e. doing an even fancier dialectical maneuver than one normally attributed to Hegel. Marx reminds Hegel that repetition is not simply repetition, it is a farcical one (in  Hegel it is repetition of Caesar by cesarism), but then it is through Hegel we get an explication of what would a parody in Marx be: a crisis caused by hypertrophy of signification – via representation – like when the second revolution, masquerading as first, is stalling the motor of history, which then stutters in the empty repetition of simulacra. Marx: “If any section of history has been painted grey on grey, it is this. Men and events appear as Schlemihls in reverse, as shadows that have lost their bodies”. But then – the regime of parody as pure excessive signification without any ground, the condition of stasis, seems nonetheless the occasion for overcoming this stasis. Repetition deepened, exaggerated and prolonged, becomes prolegomena for a radical novelty. There’s difference looming. The wager of psychoanalysis, its concern with the speaking being, its definition of the subject and of experience as bound to the realm of signs, comes to haunt us as the lamella-like blobs, that cannot be properly signified. And this in turn appears to be shaping the language in a way that is not without a caricatural charm – psychoanalysis the lacanian psychoanalysis just like the swiss font also carries an excess of beauty that cannot be attributed only to and analysed in terms of rationalisation, the right/wrong dong but one is not mistaken who say that it rests wholly in its content Aren’t, in their analytical aspect, Ettinger’s elaborate neologisms but a pronouncement of Lacan’s own structuralist elaborations of Freud? Which doesn’t mean, of course, that the Lacanian orthodoxy shouldn’t fight back. Marx did, being a good Hegelian, against the Holy Family of the Bauer brothers and their supporters. The Freudian orthodoxy didn’t make it easy for Lacan either, though it was only “back to Freud” at stake at the beginning and “be Lacanians if you wish: I’m a Freudian” in the end. Our point lies, however, elsewhere. And it is a literary one, coming from a Lacanian affinity rather than from the Lacanian field. Namely, a certain degree of liking. (We could observe such in the recent Žižek-Peterson debate, where Peterson started with “The Communist Manifesto” and was disappointed that Žižek didn’t talk about Marxism that much). There’s a big risk that comes with any liking; but this is nonetheless supportive of the libido model and the Lacanian take on the lamella. “Libido is this lamella that the organism's being takes to its true limit, which goes further than the body's limit. Its radical function in animals is materialized in a certain ethology by the sudden decline [chute] in an animal's ability to intimidate other animals at the boundaries of its “territory”. This lamella is an organ”, lest we forget, “since it is the instrument of an organism”. And yet there is something not unlike liking that seems to permeate the matter. Take the affinity itself. Firstly, it names a natural liking for and understanding of someone or something. But then, in biochemistry, affinity stands for the degree to which a substance tends to combine with another. Dictionary seems an unruly beast sometimes. “It is sometimes almost palpable [comme sensible], as when an hysteric plays at testing its elasticity to the hilt”. This caricatural liking we bring to the table.

Yet, we remain careful. A self-debasement might be a power-move. Convictions? “(...) I am not convinced myself and (...) I do not seek to persuade other people to believe in them. Or, more precisely, (...) I do not know how far I believe in them. There is no reason, as it seems to me, why the emotional factor of conviction should enter into this question at all. It is surely possible to throw oneself into a line of thought and to follow it wherever it leads out of simple scientific curiosity, or, if the reader prefers, as an advocatus diaboli, who is not on that account himself sold to the devil”. One can’t resist it. Liking drives in. It’s perhaps far-fetched to offer caricature as means of analysis. Neither tragedy nor farce, as one might put it, but history (i.e. desiring subject) remains here the main focus. But as a method of sharpening the tools these exaggerations may prove good enough. In November 2017, German doctor Kristina Hänel was found guilty of breaking Paragraph 219a of the German Criminal Code and fined €6,000 by the Gießen District Court. Her crime? Listing abortion as a medical service on her practice’s website.

Dr. Hänel was charged under Nazi-era Paragraph 219a, which criminalizes advertising abortion services. The offense is punishable with up to two years in prison for anyone who publicly “offers, announces or recommends services for pregnancy termination.” In court, Hänel’s defense lawyer argued that her website remains informational and does not meet the definition of advertising. Nonetheless, the Gießen judge found Dr. Hänel guilty, justifying the ruling, “Lawmakers do not want to discuss abortion in public as if it were a normal thing.” Except, as Dr. Hänel and many women know, abortion is a normal thing. Over 100,000 individuals in Germany choose to terminate unwanted pregnancies each year.

Although abortion is a common procedure in Germany, it remains technically illegal under Paragraph 218, where it is listed next to murder and manslaughter. Only through a subsequent amendment is abortion permitted, granted specific requirements are met: pregnant people must obtain an abortion within the first twelve weeks of pregnancy, after completing mandatory counseling with a certified counselor, and waiting four days between counseling and procedure. Abortion is not covered by health insurance except for very low-income individuals or in the case of rape or crime. Kate Cahoon, a leading member of the Bündnis für sexuelle Selbstbestimmung (Alliance for Sexual Self-Determination) argues “the fact that abortion is still regulated by the criminal code in Germany shows that we still have a long way to go in the fight for sexual and reproductive rights.” She continues: “Paragraph 219a is only part of the problem, it’s Paragraph 218 that makes abortion a crime — feminists and socialists have been fighting for its abolition for over a century.”

Anti-abortion activists have been using Paragraph 219a to systematically target and intimidate abortion providers for years. Anti-abortion fundamentalist Klaus Günter Annen of “Nie Wieder e.V” — “Never Again,” equating abortion with the Holocaust —reports up to twenty-seven doctors to the authorities annually. Dr. Hänel has faced charges twice before, including in 2008. And she is not alone: in 2006 a Bayreuth doctor was fined for advertising abortion, while another was charged after her name was listed online as a provider. This year, gynecologists Nora Szász and Natascha Nicklaus of Kassel have been charged. Most reported doctors choose to remove factual information from their websites to comply with the law. That’s why Dr. Hänel is such a rallying point for reproductive-rights activists: by refusing to back down, she has galvanized the campaign to abolish the law.

When abortion is stigmatized and made taboo, there are negative consequences for those seeking abortion and within broader societal discourse. There is no comprehensive list of abortion providers readily available online, and websites like loveline.de — a sexual-health site for teens — don’t even mention the word. Individuals must go to pregnancy counselors in person to receive information, costing time and travel. This is compounded for individuals whose first language isn’t German, or those who travel from Poland to Germany and are required to wait the obligatory four days. Hospitals don’t have to offer abortion services, and many doctors do not study abortion during their medical training. In December 2016, chief physician of Capio Elbe-Jeetzel Clinic of Dannenberg, Dr. Thomas Börner, refused to perform or allow abortions to be performed in his clinic on “religious grounds.” That means there are areas of Germany where abortions are almost impossible to procure — either due to lack of information or a lack of practicing doctors.

Yet there’s one group that is not censored when it comes to abortion: anti-abortion fundamentalists. Filled with untruths and photoshopped images, babykaust.de is the only website that features a list of German abortion providers. “I don’t want women to have to go to the websites of anti-abortion activists to find a list of doctors who do pregnancy terminations,” Dr. Hänel argued after her court case. The fact that babykaust.de is able to spread lies about abortion while medical practitioners who offer factual information about the procedure are criminally charged, shows how the law privileges anti-abortionists over the lives of women.

The attack on Dr. Hänel in the autumn of 2017 has much to do with a right wing that feels emboldened in the wake of the September elections, in which the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) won ninety-four seats in the Bundestag, becoming Germany’s third-largest party. AfD opposes abortion, and “all attempts to downplay abortions, government support for abortions, or to declare abortions as a human right.” Prominent member Beatrix von Storch — granddaughter of Hitler’s finance minister Lutz Graf Schwerin von Krosigk — leads the annual anti-abortion march in Berlin. (She also made headlines when she argued that border police should have the right to shoot women and children refugees trying to enter Germany.)

AfD’s anti-abortion position is part of their xenophobic and pro-natalist ideology, which sees Germany’s (white) population threatened by falling birthrates and rising foreign immigration. Section 6.2 of their political program, “Larger Families instead of Mass Immigration” warns that immigrant families with higher birthrates than German families will “hasten the ethnic-cultural changes in society.” AfD’s answer to this “problem” is straight out of the fascist playbook: “Germany’s negative demographic trend has to be counteracted… The only mid- and long-term solution is to attain a higher birth rate by the native population by stimulating family policies.”

This is particularly chilling given the eugenicist origins of Paragraph 219a — part of the Nazis’ “racial hygiene” program that sought to forcibly increase the “Aryan” population and decrease that of the “destroyers of the culture,” such as Jews, foreigners, and “individuals unworthy of life.” Shortly after its introduction in 1933, the Berlin Council of Physicians argued that practice of abortion “shall be exterminated with a strong hand … proceedings will be taken against every evil-doer who dares to injure our sacred healthy race.” Meanwhile, Hitler awarded women with four or more children the Cross of Honor of the German Mother.

This invocation of “racial hygiene” is visible in Alternative for Germany’s election poster, which features a blond pregnant woman’s midsection and the caption, “New Germans? We make our own.”

Fighting Back

But while AfD has benefited by positioning itself as the anti-establishment party — in distinction to the new grand coalition of center-left Social Democrats and the conservative Christian Democratic Union — organizing against 219a helped shift the terms of the debate. A petition of support for Dr. Hänel garnered over 155,000 signatures and motivated dozens of solidarity events and actions. The Bündnis für sexuelle Selbstbestimmung’s social media campaign #WegMit219a continues to gain traction and presence in the media, and women are coming forward to talk about their abortions. Kate Cahoon explains, “A lot of people had no idea that this law existed before this campaign. I think that’s why it gained traction so quickly — people were shocked and wanted to take a stand.”

The debate has also moved into government. The federal states of Bremen, Berlin, Brandenburg, and Hamburg are attempting to remove the clause through an initiative in the upper house of parliament, while in the Bundestag the Social Democrats, the Greens, the Left Party, and even the neoliberal Free Democratic Party have all introduced legislation to remove or significantly reform 219a, sparking the first debate on the law in twenty years. And while the Social Democrats initially dropped their proposal as they moved into coalition with the Christian Democratic Union, activists have vowed to keep up pressure to remove the paragraph once and for all.

On International Women’s Day in Berlin, around 6,000 people demonstrated, many carrying banners and signs demanding the removal of the Nazi paragraph. Cahoon sees the momentum behind #WegMit219a as “a big step in the direction of breaking down the stigma and silence around abortion rights.” A victory on 219a would be an important move towards decriminalization and destigmatization. It would not only be a victory for women and doctors in Germany; it would also strike a blow against the racist pro-natalism of AfD and the fascist legacy upon which the paragraph is based.

The article recounts points made by a former Jehovah’s Witness on a Reddit post where users could ask him about his time in the religious group in Poland, which he describes as a cult that “tries to control emotions, thought, information and behaviour of a person.” He mentions the extreme lengths members will go to ostracise those who have choose to leave, with one man’s announcement that he’s losing his faith leading to so much pressure from the group that “he jumped into a river and killed himself.” Those who do manage to leave are “disfellowshipped”, whereupon members cannot talk or interact with them from that point on. From the perspective of my project I found this interesting as it is common practice in cults, particularly those based on religious or spiritual texts, that members who leave are banned from socialising with those within the group after. This makes it an extremely hard decision to leave; one that can tear apart families and friendships. Unfortunately, this also means that a lot of women suffering physical and sexual abuse within these cults will stay in them due to the social and religious pressures of the group. 

In regards to women, he states “she should be submissive to her husband, who is the head of their family and it is he who makes all the important decisions”, “women cannot teach in the congregation, they cannot deliver talks or say public prayers. When they conduct a private Bible study or say a prayer with another person, while a man is around, she has to wear a scarf on her head as a sign of being submissive.” The woman is “a complement for a man.”

In an interview with BBC Scotland, former member of the Children of God, Verity Carter, explains what it was like growing up in the cult in 1980s Scotland. The cult was founded by David Berg in the 60s, with one of his mantras being that “God was love and love was sex, so there should be no limits, regardless of age or relationship.” Verity says this this “actively encouraged sexual activities among minors as young as two or three years old.” A point I found interesting was that it was worst for those who had been born into it, as many of the adults didn’t see how extreme the behaviours had become due to it happening “a step at a time.” She also says “there was sexual abuse for myself from the age of four, not just from my dad who got convicted, but from various other members of the cult, some related, some not,” and that “I was punished a lot because I was never able to stop asking questions.” 

I definitely want to look further into the Children of God, now known as The Family International, as they are one of the cults that lead to me choosing this project. I have previously watched a documentary about them and remembered how it was essentially founded on sexual abuse and how the cult is still able to thrive today despite this.
